Q: How do I make a clip?

Open Clips and Thumbs Maker and, on the Clips tab, tick a suggested clip (Use in a clip). A bar rises at the bottom of the screen: press Make clip. Tick several and the button reads Make one clip from them, which joins them into one clip. The clip editor opens as its own screen with five tabs: Trim (click the transcript to set the start, drag the timeline, set the length), Format (video clip, audiogram, or mp3, and the shape), Captions, Logo, and Finish. The preview on the right shows the result on every tab. Press Make clip under it. Finished clips land in My Outputs, ready to download and post. Your first 3 clips each month are free; past that they come in packs of 25.

Before you start

Choose an episode with a usable moment and decide where the clip will be shown. The shape, captions and branding should fit that destination.

Step 1

Choose the episode moment

Open Clips & Thumbs Maker and choose an episode moment. In clip ideas, tick Use in a clip on the moment you want, then use the Make clip button below the selections. The checkbox selects a moment; it does not open the editor by itself.

Listen before and after your selection so the opening has enough context and the ending does not cut off the point.

Step 2

Trim the actual beginning and ending

In Trim, use the transcript to choose the start, then adjust the waveform range and duration. Play the selection with a little surrounding context. Keep This Length preserves the duration while moving the range; do not cut the first or last word in half.

Choose a moment that makes sense without the whole episode. Keep the speaker’s qualification or explanation when removing it would change the meaning. A suggested moment is a starting range, not an instruction to keep an awkward cut.

Step 3

Choose format, captions and logo

In Format, choose Video, Audiogram or MP3 and a shape: 9:16, 4:5, 1:1 or 16:9. For video, choose Fill frame or Show whole. In Captions and Logo, set the style, word count, size, position and branding. MP3 does not have visual captions or a logo.

Captions offers Clean, Outline, Box, Spoken, Headline and Word Box. Choose one to six words at a time or a whole line, then use More options for font, case, colors, active-word treatment, outline, box or shadow. Play the preview to check names and readability.

Logo placement uses a nine-position grid. Channel Preferences supplies reusable defaults and logos, including for virtual channels. Show whole preserves the video with a blurred background; Fill frame crops to fill the chosen shape.

Review the trim in the editor and choose the output format. Check the caption wording, the caption appearance and your logo placement.

Watch the whole preview. Pay attention to names, caption timing and whether text overlaps a face or an important part of the picture.

Step 4

Save a draft or render the clip

Open Finish and play the preview. Save as Draft keeps an unfinished composition for later; Make Clip starts rendering the finished output. Wait for the job to complete, then open My Outputs, play the finished file and download it.

Make the clip and wait for the output. Open My Outputs and review the rendered file, not only the editor preview.

Play it from beginning to end, then download the version you want to share. Check sound, captions and framing on the device where your audience will watch.

Review checklist

The moment makes sense on its own.
Caption text and timing are accurate.
The completed output has clear sound and suitable framing.

If you get stuck

The clip starts mid-thought

Extend the trim or choose a moment with a clearer opening.

The preview is good but the finished clip is wrong

Review the rendered output in My Outputs and return to the editor to correct the affected setting.
