dumbest criminals daniel butler and
00:01:05
debbie allen
00:01:07
hi there hey debbie david debbie yes sir
00:01:10
what is your dream car
00:01:12
oh dream car i rode in a limo once that
00:01:14
was fun oh you want dream car and driver
00:01:17
of course i shouldn't know
00:01:19
oh i'd want a hummer you know like
00:01:21
schwarzenegger something scary yeah
00:01:22
don't you think most people would choose
00:01:24
something like sporty like a porsche or
00:01:26
classic like a 57 chevy maybe yeah most
00:01:28
people yeah but the guy we're going to
00:01:30
meet a little later knew
00:01:31
he thought it'd be great to ride around
00:01:33
town in a bread truck but first up is a
00:01:35
story that involves bootlegged compact
00:01:37
discs you're about to meet a man who
00:01:39
multiplied his miseries by duplicating
00:01:41
record albums let's join him for his
00:01:44
swine song
00:01:44
[Music]
00:01:49
we entered into a transaction with a guy
00:01:51
that was selling counterfeit microsoft
00:01:54
windows 98
00:01:56
cds
00:01:57
i bought sperm several times made an
00:02:00
arrangement to buy another 850. when he
00:02:02
arrived he was 45 minutes late
00:02:05
always happens that way he parks in the
00:02:07
wrong place he's completely out of view
00:02:09
from my her my surveillance team my
00:02:12
cameras and everything so i have to ask
00:02:14
him to come over
00:02:16
just like an idiot or a dummy that he
00:02:17
was he just pulls it over there right
00:02:20
next to my car work where it's in view
00:02:22
of everything
00:02:23
during the purchase itself basically i
00:02:26
gave him eight thousand five hundred
00:02:27
dollars he had it in his hand for about
00:02:29
five seconds
00:02:30
until my takedown team took him off
00:02:33
it's really funny
00:02:34
because he
00:02:36
questioned me so many times about being
00:02:37
a policeman and i reassured him the
00:02:39
whole time that i wasn't a policeman
00:02:42
and he was just so dumb that he believed
00:02:44
me the whole time i wasn't the cop
00:02:47
and
00:02:48
i was at the end
00:02:51
he was scared to death at that time
00:02:54
he basically didn't know what to do
00:02:56
and uh
00:02:58
after knowing or asking i was thinking i
00:03:00
was a policeman the whole time he
00:03:02
basically
00:03:03
just sat there and
00:03:06
[Music]
00:03:08
[Applause]
00:03:10
didn't believe he was good
00:03:11
after all that
00:03:13
debbie you remember those old episodes
00:03:15
of lassie you know when lastly would get
00:03:17
separated from her family and then she
00:03:19
she seemed lost and then finally she
00:03:21
came home you know oh sure i remember
00:03:24
him i can tear up just thinking about
00:03:25
him you know me too but our next dork is
00:03:28
almost exactly like that except the part
00:03:30
of lassie is played by a sport utility
00:03:32
vehicle
00:03:33
here's this week's heart-rending
00:03:35
installment of something to remember me
00:03:38
by here's for you
00:03:42
all right well one of the hardest cases
00:03:44
we've had to work here is a guy stole
00:03:46
the mayor's suburban
00:03:49
he brought it back and parked it in his
00:03:51
driveway pretty convenient he called us
00:03:54
said somebody's been gone in my suburban
00:03:56
went out there had been driven several
00:03:58
hundred miles it's pretty obvious that
00:03:59
whoever had it had partied hardy beer
00:04:01
cans everywhere in it trashed out pretty
00:04:03
bad a guy thrown up in the in the front
00:04:06
seat
00:04:07
he said well i don't guess there's
00:04:08
anything much we can do about this i
00:04:10
told him i said i think i can solve this
00:04:12
for you pretty quick and he said no
00:04:13
there's no way you'll ever figure it out
00:04:16
i've looked in the back seat and found
00:04:17
the uh guys texas department corrections
00:04:19
inmate card his name picture
00:04:22
where he lives and all the information
00:04:24
that we need to to find him
00:04:26
laying in the back seat along with
00:04:28
the contents of his stomach
00:04:30
[Music]
00:04:31
well he looked like a dentist he acted
00:04:33
like a dentist he caused untold misery
00:04:36
like a dentist but when authorities took
00:04:37
a closer look they found a whole set of
00:04:39
false teeth claims yep for the
00:04:41
nitty-gritty let's conduct a little
00:04:43
cavity search in the mouth
00:04:46
even his name is a mouthful
00:04:49
italia a treadway hathorne
00:04:52
everyone here knew him as a decent
00:04:54
dentist who treated prisoners in marion
00:04:56
county florida he prescribed a
00:04:58
antibiotic which was
00:05:01
okay
00:05:02
and
00:05:02
he did a pretty good job
00:05:04
but when he was arrested at this
00:05:06
department store for shoplifting a jaw
00:05:08
jaw-dropping truth came to light
00:05:11
he wasn't a dentist at all not only had
00:05:14
he pulled teeth he'd pulled the wool
00:05:16
over authorities eyes i don't care if
00:05:18
he's licensed or not he was better
00:05:19
dentist than anybody else i've had he
00:05:22
seemed legit even had a private practice
00:05:24
but his license was bogus and instead of
00:05:27
this being a place of business
00:05:29
it became a place of residence
00:05:31
as you might expect having an imposter
00:05:33
tooling around in their mouths has
00:05:35
become a sore spot that the inmates
00:05:38
don't want brush to sign it's the
00:05:40
sheriff's fault it's their negligence
00:05:42
because they didn't run a criminal check
00:05:44
on this man to who like you said seen
00:05:46
one thousand people we have are in a
00:05:48
process now conducting an internal
00:05:50
investigation into the hiring process of
00:05:52
this individual to find out what
00:05:54
happened where he fell through the
00:05:55
cracks
00:05:56
[Music]
00:05:57
[Applause]
00:05:57
[Music]
00:06:04
in seattle it is illegal to carry a
00:06:06
concealed weapon that is over six feet
00:06:08
in length
00:06:10
for the doper you're about to meet the
00:06:11
problem wasn't concealing drugs it was
00:06:13
getting rid of this stuff if possession
00:06:15
is nine tenths of the law this guy was
00:06:17
trying hard to be in that one tenth
00:06:19
minority nice try no sale he weaseled
00:06:23
his way into the feature we call
00:06:25
america's dumbest excuses
00:06:30
we were working an area high crime area
00:06:33
for narcotics trafficking
00:06:36
and i was driving back to the station
00:06:39
and i saw a guy standing on the street
00:06:41
corner obviously selling some narcotics
00:06:43
he looked at me and i could tell he knew
00:06:45
i was a cop and i could tell he was a
00:06:47
bad guy
00:06:49
so i pulled into the convenience store
00:06:50
parking lot and as i did he had a
00:06:54
small bag in his hand
00:06:57
like it would hold a bottle
00:06:59
he ran back towards the store and threw
00:07:01
the bag
00:07:02
inside a garbage can
00:07:04
and then took off running down the
00:07:06
street caught him about half a block
00:07:08
away
00:07:08
handcuffed and brought him back to the
00:07:10
store
00:07:11
and of course he's denying that he did
00:07:12
anything wrong he was just jogging when
00:07:16
i brought him back to the store i
00:07:18
reached into the garbage can and removed
00:07:20
the bag that he had thrown away
00:07:22
when i looked inside it i could see it
00:07:24
was full of rock cocaine
00:07:26
i didn't say anything to him but the
00:07:28
second i looked inside the bag he yelled
00:07:30
at me that's not my dope
00:07:32
i threw that away i just looked at the
00:07:34
backup officer and said did you hear him
00:07:36
say that
00:07:37
he said yes and obviously we had a
00:07:40
conviction
00:07:43
well why do you think we call them dopes
00:07:45
debbie what do you have to follow that
00:07:47
oh a good one here's what we were
00:07:49
talking about earlier the saga of the
00:07:51
bread truck bandit and as we follow this
00:07:53
trail of crumbs a much bigger story
00:07:55
rises here's tonight's blue light
00:07:57
special
00:08:02
it's not your typical crime scene but
00:08:04
this is not your typical crime it is
00:08:06
unusual we don't haven't had too many
00:08:09
thefts of
00:08:10
items like this such as bread trucks
00:08:12
while making a delivery to a store the
00:08:15
driver came out to find his bread truck
00:08:17
and rolled on without him that was a
00:08:19
joke but it was no joke a thief had
00:08:21
gotten his buns out of there in a hurry
00:08:24
leading police on a chase that ended
00:08:25
with the truck became mired in the mud
00:08:28
there investigators learned the bad guy
00:08:30
with the baked goods may have been
00:08:32
involved in another illegal activity
00:08:34
dog fights
00:08:36
police found these cages in the backyard
00:08:38
of the home where he had dropped off 500
00:08:41
worth of bread possibly to feed dogs
00:08:43
used in fights
00:08:45
with evidence mounting the police had
00:08:47
plenty of information to move on while
00:08:49
the delivery man moved out after all
00:08:52
fresh bread is fresh bread for only so
00:08:54
long
00:08:55
[Applause]
00:08:55
[Music]
00:09:02
coming up later a perpetrator nearly
00:09:04
becomes a popsicle but first with news
00:09:07
confirmed by low-ranking white house
00:09:09
officials here's daniel with adc
00:09:12
headlines
00:09:13
[Music]
00:09:14
[Applause]
00:09:18
when an intoxicated patron was ignored
00:09:21
by the clerk at an anchorage adult
00:09:23
bookstore the customer picked up the
00:09:25
cash register and ran out of the door ah
00:09:28
but this sudden soul left a paper trail
00:09:32
literally the cash register tape
00:09:34
unfurled as he ran
00:09:36
leading police directly to the man
00:09:39
okay
00:09:40
get the tape obviously this next crook
00:09:43
failed to read the book the seven habits
00:09:45
of highly effective pilferers he broke
00:09:48
into a bank after hours but found the
00:09:50
vault just too hard to crack hating to
00:09:53
leave empty-handed he climbed onto a
00:09:55
chair and yanked the surveillance video
00:09:57
camera from the wall
00:09:59
slight oversight okay the video recorder
00:10:02
in the back of the bank captured a great
00:10:04
close-up of this highly recognizable
00:10:06
fellow indian thievery
00:10:08
should have gone for the camera and
00:10:10
finally an escapee from fairbanks
00:10:12
correctional center made a choice that
00:10:14
made it hard for him to blend into the
00:10:16
general populace some years ago it seems
00:10:19
he had had an expletive tattooed in inch
00:10:22
high letters on his left cheek
00:10:25
all right
00:10:26
because he was unable to turn the other
00:10:28
cheek to everyone he met he was soon
00:10:31
located and recaptured no doubt he's
00:10:34
muttering a word that's right on the tip
00:10:35
of his tongue and the side of his face
00:10:38
well on that low note we'll close the
00:10:40
file on abc headlines news ripped from
00:10:43
somewhere near the back of your local
00:10:45
newspaper debbie
00:10:51
now we're going to look at a duo of
00:10:53
criminals in florida who were anything
00:10:54
but dynamic in pulling off two separate
00:10:57
capers both bad guys used cabs to pull
00:11:00
off bank jobs but each adds his own
00:11:02
unique touch of stupidity
00:11:06
no question about it this guy was gutsy
00:11:09
or very very dumb he holds up a bank
00:11:12
wearing no disguise using a taxi as his
00:11:15
getaway car
00:11:16
he was practically begging to get caught
00:11:19
comes back out gets in the cab right
00:11:21
from everybody
00:11:22
half the cab take him over to fort myers
00:11:24
and drops him off the burger king on
00:11:26
college parkway he took the stolen money
00:11:28
right out of the bag and he gave it to
00:11:29
the uh
00:11:30
cab driver gave her a 20 bill and said
00:11:33
keep the change ah but the meter was up
00:11:36
on you buddy
00:11:36
[Music]
00:11:39
another day another robber another taxi
00:11:41
another bank another dumb criminal
00:11:43
[Applause]
00:11:48
this robber followed the same dumb modus
00:11:51
operandi but added his own special twist
00:11:54
note the note on the counter he used his
00:11:56
own uh check his paycheck stub that had
00:11:58
his name what boat he was on the whole
00:12:00
work so screw the number he left it all
00:12:02
on there he just turned it over and used
00:12:03
that i guess he didn't have anything
00:12:05
perhaps he can use the back of his
00:12:07
conviction papers to write himself a
00:12:09
pardon
00:12:11
[Music]
00:12:15
you know it's a nice gesture to give a
00:12:17
friend a ride when he needs one but when
00:12:19
you pick him up in a stolen car and you
00:12:21
both get arrested the gesture you give
00:12:23
him might not be so nice you know
00:12:25
meet a good samaritan who really wasn't
00:12:27
all that good
00:12:30
i was working investigations when we're
00:12:33
investigating this guy that was
00:12:34
committing a series of robberies
00:12:38
[Music]
00:12:57
he committed 20 and later admitted to
00:12:59
doing about 50
00:13:01
and after we arrested him
00:13:04
he was in jail in our jail
00:13:06
and we had put out a flyer to all the
00:13:08
local departments describing the car
00:13:10
that was used
00:13:11
and
00:13:12
his friend drives into the parking lot
00:13:19
he matched the description of the other
00:13:21
suspect and he was arrested
00:13:25
[Applause]
00:13:27
what are you doing
00:13:28
what are you doing driving the truck
00:13:30
here
00:13:37
it's a lot easier on us when they drive
00:13:40
themselves in
00:13:48
ex-friends helping friends get arrested
00:13:51
here's the scenario you're a crook and
00:13:53
you know that police are looking for you
00:13:54
you have to hide someplace pronto where
00:13:56
do you hmm needs to be bigger than a
00:13:58
bread box but small enough that no one
00:14:01
would think of looking for you there so
00:14:03
here's how the first of two fugitives
00:14:05
solved his problem
00:14:08
i'm chief dan pukach with the cuyahoga
00:14:10
county sheriff's office
00:14:12
in cleveland ohio
00:14:14
one day we were going to serve a warrant
00:14:16
on an individual
00:14:18
and two detectives went to his house
00:14:20
[Music]
00:14:24
sheriff's office open up
00:14:26
get out of here
00:14:27
the man came to the front door seeing
00:14:30
that they were detectives and ran back
00:14:32
into the house
00:14:34
the detectives called for backup and
00:14:36
when backup units arrived and we've got
00:14:38
a guy in the house on a warrant mike's
00:14:40
been watching the back paul you go to
00:14:41
the back with mike tom you come with me
00:14:44
to the front
00:14:46
entry was gained into the house
00:14:49
sheriff's office come on out
00:14:56
they searched in the closets they
00:14:58
searched under the sink they looked in
00:15:00
the beds
00:15:01
they looked in the attic and they looked
00:15:02
in the basement
00:15:03
they looked everywhere where a person
00:15:05
could normally hide and they couldn't
00:15:06
find them
00:15:07
they proceeded to search the house for
00:15:09
the second time checking behind the
00:15:11
couches underneath the couches and
00:15:13
chairs
00:15:14
they still couldn't find the subject
00:15:17
there was no way the man could have got
00:15:18
out of the house without the officers
00:15:20
saying he had to be in the house
00:15:22
on the third search of the house one of
00:15:24
the officers discovered that there was
00:15:26
food in the sink frozen turkey hamburger
00:15:29
patties stuff that normally belonged in
00:15:31
the freezer when they opened the freezer
00:15:34
there was the suspect turning blue from
00:15:36
the cold in the freezer about 40 minutes
00:15:39
by this time
00:15:40
he gave a whole new meaning to a police
00:15:42
officer telling a suspect to freeze he
00:15:44
was one of the dumbest criminals of all
00:15:46
time
00:15:48
okay so the freezer hideout wasn't such
00:15:51
a good idea but now here's the crook who
00:15:53
tries a different spin on things
00:15:57
several years ago when i was a warrant
00:15:59
officer uniform i was serving criminal
00:16:02
warrants
00:16:03
we had a subject that we'd been trying
00:16:05
to locate on several felony warrants he
00:16:08
had a history of running from officers
00:16:09
[Music]
00:16:10
there was an occasion where i received a
00:16:12
telephone call from an informant one
00:16:14
morning telling me that this
00:16:16
subject was at a house
00:16:19
i talked to the
00:16:20
person that answered the door for about
00:16:22
45 minutes before he allowed us to
00:16:24
search the house
00:16:25
during the time i was talking to this
00:16:27
guy we kept hearing a door slam inside
00:16:29
the residence
00:16:31
every time the door would slam we would
00:16:33
all get kind of nervous if the guy was
00:16:35
trying to run out of the house
00:16:37
we kept looking and looking and never
00:16:39
did see him come out or movement
00:16:42
so finally the guy that i was talking to
00:16:44
at the front door decided
00:16:46
i could come in and look
00:16:48
we searched the house we searched the
00:16:50
attic we looked in every closet under
00:16:52
beds
00:16:53
and didn't locate him but we kept
00:16:55
hearing the door slam
00:16:57
we had all the doors
00:16:59
watched by an officer and still couldn't
00:17:01
find the guy
00:17:02
finally i was looking around in the
00:17:05
laundry type room
00:17:07
and there was a dryer sitting there and
00:17:09
this guy was curled up inside this
00:17:11
household dryer
00:17:14
what the door sound was we kept trying
00:17:16
to hear was him
00:17:18
slamming the door trying to get it shut
00:17:21
with his weight in the dryer it wouldn't
00:17:23
close up
00:17:25
the only regret i have about this arrest
00:17:27
is we didn't turn the dryer on first
00:17:29
[Music]
00:17:31
the guy that uh i was looking for had a
00:17:33
history of every time he got arrested we
00:17:36
had about seven pictures of him wearing
00:17:37
the same t-shirt
00:17:39
and he had it on when we arrested him
00:17:41
that day i told him he should throw that
00:17:43
shirt away
00:17:45
bad luck

00:18:02
you know some people say that the secret
00:18:04
to success in life is to say hungry now
00:18:07
that's just what brought down our final
00:18:09
criminal of the night we found the idea
00:18:11
of a little late night snack
00:18:13
irresistible and that's what made this
00:18:15
guy so arrestable we serve up his story
00:18:18
for tonight's entry and we're not making
00:18:20
this up
00:18:20
[Music]
00:18:24
the story that comes to mind was of a
00:18:26
criminal case that we had was uh was
00:18:29
this guy who broke into a uh
00:18:31
local deli store here in cernak lake and
00:18:33
that was done we got a call of an alarm
00:18:35
going off was asylum alarm
00:18:37
once we got this door we looked through
00:18:38
the front window we noticed there was an
00:18:40
individual behind the counter making
00:18:42
what appeared to be a sandwich and that
00:18:43
was done
00:18:44
and at the time we thought it was just
00:18:46
an employee so our quantum investigating
00:18:47
a little bit further we found that there
00:18:49
was forced entry to one of the back
00:18:51
doors of the building and that was dumb
00:18:54
we went in and uh apprehended the person
00:18:56
who was hiding underneath the deli
00:18:58
counter
00:18:59
at the time and that was dumb if uh he
00:19:02
would have just taken the cash and left
00:19:03
the store
00:19:04
he would probably gotten away with it
00:19:06
however he decided he was a little
00:19:07
hungry he stopped to make himself a
00:19:09
sandwich before he left but that was
00:19:10
done
00:19:16
well we've run out of time and stories
00:19:18
for tonight so i think i'll go home and
00:19:20
make a sandwich i'm hungry
00:19:22
good idea i think i'll check references
00:19:24
on my dentist after this show too maybe
00:19:27
make sure there's nobody in my freezer
00:19:28
or my dryer yeah you're paranoid now man
00:19:31
but you folks at home do whatever seems
00:19:32

00:19:57
stupidity of would-be criminals as
00:20:00
