America's Dumbest Criminals - Season 2, Episode 15 - Lights, Camera, Busted - Full Episode

February 17, 2022 / 18:59

This episode of America's Dumbest Criminals covers various ridiculous criminal acts, including a fake film production to catch graffiti taggers, a woman robbing a coffee shop after applying for a job, and a bank robber who took a taxi.

In San Jose, California, police set up a fake film production to lure graffiti taggers, resulting in 31 arrests when the taggers began painting on camera. The clever ruse turned into a chaotic scene.

A woman in Cary, North Carolina, filled out a job application at a coffee shop, then returned to rob the place, leaving her personal information behind. She was arrested shortly after.

In another story, two men tried to rob a bank in Fort Lauderdale but ended up being caught when the taxi driver alerted the police about the robbery.

Throughout the episode, various other dumb criminal antics are highlighted, including a man attempting to pay for a meal with stolen gift certificates and a driver getting arrested twice in one day.

TL;DR

usually graffiti taggers work under the
00:01:17
cover of night defacing public property
00:01:19
as discreetly as possible however some
00:01:22
clever cops in san jose california
00:01:24
figured out a way to lure these taggers
00:01:26
into the light in the spotlight actually
00:01:30
police set up a fake film production
00:01:32
company and sent out flyers which
00:01:33
invited the taggers to appear in a
00:01:35
documentary on their illegal art form
00:01:38
a trip to hollywood was even offered as
00:01:40
a bonus
00:01:41
avoiding entrapment by asking their
00:01:43
subjects not to paint and just show them
00:01:45
their previous works the officers slash
00:01:48
cameramen were quite surprised when many
00:01:51
of their stars began spraying the wall
00:01:53
anyway the on-camera ad-libbing resulted
00:01:56
in 31 arrests as the documentary turned

into a giant game of kick the can

our next story comes to us from the
00:02:15
kerry north carolina police department a
00:02:18
woman had come into the shop earlier and
00:02:20
filled out a job application she
00:02:22
returned a short while later but not to
00:02:24
see if the job had been filled but
00:02:25
rather to empty the till
00:02:28
as soon as the woman left with her
00:02:29
unearned wages the counterman called the
00:02:31
cops i'm calling from the coffee shop
00:02:33
down at the mall here listen we just got
00:02:35
robbed some gal came in she filled out
00:02:37
an application here she's uh she
00:02:39
actually left her dress on it with all
00:02:41
the vital information in the hands of
00:02:43
the police the woman was soon
00:02:44
apprehended and charged with attempted
00:02:46
robbery
00:02:47
as it turned out the woman needed the
00:02:49
money to bail her husband out of jail
00:02:52

officer carl traber recounts how he was
00:03:05
able to get two dumb criminals to call
00:03:07
the kettle black
00:03:09
my partner and i we work in wheelchair
00:03:11
division traffic and of course
00:03:13
friday night you look for drunk drivers
00:03:16
we got out there about 11 o'clock that's
00:03:17
when we started our shift and we were
00:03:19
going northbound on pico and we spotted
00:03:22
a car pulled him over said my goodness
00:03:24
we got hardly out of the station already
00:03:26
got a drunk driver and he was pretty
00:03:28
pretty breeze house put the cops on put
00:03:31
him in the back seat and while we were
00:03:34
checking out the car and everything
00:03:35
another car came by almost hit us so we
00:03:38
chased after him
00:03:40
not a drunk driver so we put him in the
00:03:42
back seat
00:03:43
while we were in route to the station is
00:03:45
one drunk looked at the other and said
00:03:47
you mean to tell me you were driving as
00:03:49
drunk as you are
00:03:51
so the other guy said you you have to
00:03:53
talk i mean i wouldn't be driving it
00:03:54
might be as drunk as you are and the one
00:03:57
guy said if i would be as strong as you
00:03:58
i would have to drive i couldn't even
00:04:00
walk and we actually used them on the
00:04:04
police report
00:04:06
as witnesses
00:04:07
against each other
00:04:09
this dumb criminal decided to pick up a
00:04:11
few things at a local hardware store
00:04:13
after it closed unfortunately he forgot
00:04:16
to grab one last item before he left the
00:04:18
building you can see our sneaky snatcher
00:04:21
as he casually carries items in and out
00:04:23
of the back door of the business they
00:04:25
probably would have made a clean getaway
00:04:27
except for one little hitch
00:04:29
when police arrived on the scene they
00:04:31
immediately noticed a piece of paper
00:04:33
that had been used to jam the door open
00:04:35
during the robbery ah look at this
00:04:39
can you believe that let me let me call
00:04:41
it in
00:04:42
it turned out to be a traffic ticket
00:04:45
issued to the american bungalow earlier
00:04:47
that day complete with his name address
00:04:50
and car tag

what will you do if your new vcr breaks
00:04:57
down after a year or so well it's no
00:04:59
problem if you have the good sense to
00:05:01
get an extended warranty
00:05:03
however in this case good sense turned
00:05:05
out to be just plain nonsense it all
00:05:08
started in a pittsburgh electronics
00:05:09
store after two men presented credit
00:05:11
cards to buy over two thousand dollars
00:05:14
worth of high-grade goods well why not
00:05:16
enjoy the comfort of extended warranty
00:05:18
coverage you only have to fill out a
00:05:20
simple form
00:05:22
and our two clever consumers proceeded
00:05:24
to do just that however there were only
00:05:27
a couple of glitches in the transaction
00:05:29
number one the credit card they had just
00:05:32
used to make their purchase was hot uh
00:05:34
can i get you to fill out a couple of
00:05:36
warranties for the uh
00:05:38
yeah yeah number two they filled in
00:05:41
their real names and addresses on the
00:05:43
warranty forms the credit card had been
00:05:45
reported stolen just that morning to
00:05:47
quote a police officer on the scene
00:05:49
somewhere in this world two villages are
00:05:52
missing their idiots
00:05:55
i'm daniel butler and this is the lovely
00:05:57
the luminous beaumont bacon thank you
00:05:59
daniel you're welcome in new hampshire
00:06:01
two guys stole the safe from a friend's
00:06:03
house and made off with it in a
00:06:04
wheelbarrow for safekeeping not very
00:06:06
their little plan hit a bump tipping it
00:06:08
over and sending the safe crashing to
00:06:11
the ground
00:06:12
yeah they panicked when they were
00:06:13
spotted by a woman across the street so
00:06:15
they quickly picked the safe up carried
00:06:16
it behind the wall and buried it how far
00:06:19
six feet under how far close
00:06:21
under a pile of leaves actually
00:06:24
it must have taken the police hours to
00:06:26
really dig and blow away all those leaks
00:06:28
oh i'm sure it did with the woman's help
00:06:30
though the police caught them quickly
00:06:31
and piled the rakish rogues into a cell
00:06:34
for questioning well why didn't they
00:06:35
just hide the safe in a fog bank
00:06:38
speaking of banks this crafty criminal
00:06:41
in fort lauderdale decided to take a
00:06:43
taxi to rob a bank however the bank was
00:06:46
closed so he told the driver to take him
00:06:48
to another one and wait for him to cash
00:06:50
a check and come back out
00:06:52
the driver figured that this was the
00:06:55
goons way of sneaking out on paying his
00:06:57
fare so he called into the bank on his
00:06:59
cell phone and told him to let him know
00:07:01
if the guy tried to slip out yeah bank
00:07:03
robbers have been known to be slippery
00:07:04
in the past this robber though he
00:07:06
returned to the cabin instructed him to
00:07:08
drive quickly to his next destination as
00:07:11
they were pulling away the bank called
00:07:13
the cab driver on his cell phone and let
00:07:15
him know about the robbery and that the
00:07:17
police would be stopping by to pay his
00:07:19
fare a little visit which they did a few
00:07:21
minutes later wait so the cabbie ended
00:07:23
up not getting paid anyway well i'm sure
00:07:25
that he was able to do a little shopping
00:07:27
with the reward money that he got oh
00:07:29
good for him which brings us to our
00:07:31
favorite part of this segment
00:07:34
of the week from all of the stories we
00:07:36
received this one is our favorite an
00:07:39
officer made a routine traffic stop and
00:07:41
noticed a strong smell of wacky tobaccy
00:07:44
as the driver rolled down his window a
00:07:46
quick search of the car produced a bag
00:07:48
of marijuana and the goof was put in the
00:07:49
back of the cruiser for the long ride
00:07:51
downtown well crook kept himself busy
00:07:54
during the trip when the officer took
00:07:55
the guy out of the cruiser he noticed a
00:07:57
wadded up piece of paper left behind on
00:07:59
the back seat where the guy had been
00:08:01
sitting when they also removed the
00:08:03
little bundle of joy there was white
00:08:05
powder on the seat and powder spilling
00:08:07
out of the wadded up paper i bet it
00:08:09
wasn't baby powder well it was just big
00:08:12
baby powder the crook tried to deny that
00:08:14
it was his until the officer pointed out
00:08:16
that the powder was wrapped in a traffic
00:08:18
citation that the goon had gotten a week
00:08:20
earlier why pay those citations when you
00:08:22
can carry them around to wrap your drugs
00:08:24
at them yeah really probably even keep
00:08:26
my vitamins fresh you know
00:08:28
i have to get a lot of parking tickets
00:08:30
though
00:08:30
[Music]
00:08:34
there are certain things that you don't
00:08:36
want to wake up from a nap a bear an
00:08:39
ex-girlfriend or a cop
00:08:42
two burglars were busy as bees filling
00:08:44
the back of their car and didn't seem to
00:08:45
notice the police cruiser parked right
00:08:48
across the street
00:08:49
our napping night shift officer heard
00:08:51
the commotion looked out of his window
00:08:53
and witnessed the stupidity going on
00:08:55
right in front of him
00:08:57
so he did the neighborly thing he got
00:08:59
himself all gussied up and gave his new
00:09:01
neighbors a little housewarming present
00:09:03
right there huh you guys do them
00:09:06
neighbors house give me that camera
00:09:09
a free ride down to the station
00:09:13
dumb criminals know a lot about putting
00:09:15
their foot in their mouths but this next
00:09:17
buffoon topped them all by putting his
00:09:19
foot in his mouth and then practically
00:09:22
swallowing it in a court of law no less
00:09:25
in oklahoma city a man on trial for
00:09:27
armed robbery had fired his lawyer and
00:09:30
was doing a pretty decent job of
00:09:31
defending himself until he came up
00:09:34
against a hostile witness can you tell
00:09:36
me exactly where you were on the night
00:09:38
of july 17th you know where i was and
00:09:41
you know and i know that you did that's
00:09:43
a lie that's a lot i should have shot
00:09:45
you that night when i was there
00:09:49
if your honor i was there of course if
00:09:53
he didn't win the case
00:09:57
a man walked into this palm beach
00:09:59
restaurant one afternoon and ordered a
00:10:01
vodka a plate of lemon slices and sugar
00:10:04
this sounded strange but not as unusual
00:10:06
as his next request do you mind if i cut
00:10:09
my money yeah i guess okay thanks man
00:10:14
[Music]
00:10:19
the counting crow then pulled out about
00:10:21
ten thousand dollars and began arranging
00:10:24
it neatly on the table in front of him
00:10:27
the waiter got the drink in lemons and
00:10:28
then made a quick call to the local
00:10:30
police yeah yeah that'll be amazing
00:10:32
officers arrived and arrested the sour
00:10:34
purse who it turned out had just
00:10:36
finished robbing two small banks a few
00:10:38
blocks away
00:10:40
needless to say the waiter didn't get a
00:10:42
tip
00:10:43
[Music]
00:10:47
people go to the movies to be
00:10:48
entertained even dumb criminals but
00:10:51
sometimes you'll find a really dim bulb
00:10:54
who wants to light up the marquee and
00:10:55
get into the action himself give me the
00:10:57
money in lebanon indiana an ex-con went
00:11:00
to the local theater and perhaps
00:11:02
depressed by the coming attractions
00:11:04
demanded a jumbo bucket of hot money
00:11:07
from employees
00:11:08
police think he asked for extra butter
00:11:11
because the sap tried to give them the
00:11:13
slip before he even left the building
00:11:15
cursing a blue streak out the door it
00:11:18
didn't take long for the authorities to
00:11:19
track down colonel slanders and arrest
00:11:22
him
00:11:23
is this the guy that you uh call about
00:11:25
with the money in the popcorn bag yes
00:11:27
yeah is this uh does that look like the
00:11:30
amount of money exactly like yes all
00:11:32
right great anyway let me take him
00:11:34
outside i'll put him in the car i'll be
00:11:35
right thank you
00:11:37
some of you may have heard of the
00:11:38
five-fingered discount or in layman's
00:11:41
terms shoplifting
00:11:43
well let's take a look at this
00:11:44
gift-giving grifter who decided to try
00:11:47
her luck and go for 10.
00:11:50
a victorville woman had stolen a part
00:11:52
for her husband's car to give to him as
00:11:54
a birthday present
00:11:56
unfortunately she stole the wrong model
00:11:58
but told him that she'd exchange it the
00:12:00
next day for the correct one
00:12:01
opting to bypass customer service she
00:12:04
sneaked gift number one back to its
00:12:06
shelf
00:12:07
snatched its replacement and that's when
00:12:09
she was snagged by store security missed
00:12:12
you see that camera right there we
00:12:13
watched everything you've done
00:12:15
that should teach your husband to always
00:12:17
look a gift horse in the mouth
00:12:23
there's an old adage that a criminal
00:12:25
always returns to the scene of the crime
00:12:28
but usually not the way these two did
00:12:31
it happened in meridian mississippi late
00:12:33
one sunday night two yen broke into a
00:12:36
restaurant made off with all the cash
00:12:38
and books of gift certificates the
00:12:41
ambience at the restaurant must have
00:12:42
been quite compelling because two days
00:12:45
later the same two knuckleheads came
00:12:47
back for dinner
00:12:49
and to add insult to injury they tried
00:12:51
to pay for the meal with some of the
00:12:53
stolen gift certificates
00:12:55
they were easily recognized and arrested
00:12:58
now like their crustacean counterparts
00:13:00
the guys are in a tank of their own
00:13:03
downtown
00:13:05
some people just won't take no for an
00:13:08
answer
00:13:09
like this dumb driver in los angeles
00:13:12
officers pulled over a guy after he ran
00:13:14
a red light and found out that he was
00:13:16
driving without a valid license after
00:13:19
his arrest he and his car were picked up
00:13:21
down at the station by a relative
00:13:23
less than half an hour later the same
00:13:26
officers were out on patrol and noticed
00:13:28
a car pull up beside them at the light i
00:13:30
can't believe this guy
00:13:32
the same guy who they had just arrested
00:13:34
was driving the same car he was just as
00:13:38
surprised as the officers beside him and
00:13:40
was arrested again
00:13:41
this time he was in double trouble his
00:13:44
car was impounded and he was
00:13:46
incarcerated
00:13:48
[Music]
00:13:51
sometimes in life when you do a good
00:13:53
deed you're rewarded in some positive
00:13:56
way in the future
00:13:57
this officer must have been in the
00:13:59
karmic express lane an officer from
00:14:02
portsmouth virginia decided to be a good
00:14:04
samaritan when he encountered a drunk
00:14:06
and opted to give the guy a lift home
00:14:08
rather than a trip down to the station
00:14:11
however as he was about to pull away
00:14:13
another man jumped into the passenger
00:14:15
seat hey man come on buy some crack yeah
00:14:17
get in although the officer was in plain
00:14:20
clothes his badge was clearly in sight
00:14:22
and his gun was on his belt even his
00:14:24
radio was broadcasting police call and
00:14:26
there you are oh come on man
00:14:28
come on the officer then took the
00:14:30
confused crackhead for a little wheeling
00:14:32
and dealing down at the station
00:14:36
the footage we are about to see is from
00:14:38
an in-store closed-circuit security
00:14:40
camera now what makes this footage stand
00:14:42
out from the average caught on tape fare
00:14:45
well it's not just that we see our
00:14:47
stupid suspects in plain sight no it's
00:14:50
not even the fact that they thought
00:14:51
destroying the camera would also destroy
00:14:53
the tape machine located in another room
00:14:56
it's the fact that the very next day one
00:14:58
of these morons showed up at the police
00:15:00
station for an unrelated charge wearing
00:15:02
the same chicago bulls jacket and cap he
00:15:05
wore in the robbery
00:15:07
the officer who had taken the initial
00:15:09
police report and watched the
00:15:10
surveillance tape was working that day
00:15:13
and instantly recognized the perp
00:15:15
arresting him on the spot and that's no
00:15:18
bull
00:15:19

00:15:22
we hope you've learned one thing this
00:15:24
week for every dumb crime there's an
00:15:26
even dumber criminal just waiting to
00:15:28
bungle right here on america's dumbest
00:15:31
criminals
00:15:32
[Music]
00:15:33
huh wake up
00:15:35
oh man on the next episode of america's
00:15:37
dumbest criminal open
00:15:41
the video debut of roller bullies a
00:15:44
motorhome mad man takes a short trip
00:15:48
a drunk driver tries breaking a habit
00:15:52
a dumb doper in monkey nazi monkey doom
00:15:55
all this and more on the next episode of
00:15:58
america's dumbest criminal hey give me
00:15:59
your money
00:16:03
we have a lot of traffic warrants in los
00:16:05
angeles uh
00:16:07
thousands and thousands of traffic wars
00:16:09
and of course the suspects the violators
00:16:11
they realize that
00:16:13
if you come to the house and you say are
00:16:15
you mr wilson all they have to say is no
00:16:18
and unless the police officer has
00:16:20
independent knowledge that this is mr
00:16:22
wilson we can't arrest him and when we
00:16:24
ask him for id he says i don't have any
00:16:26
so what are you gonna do so i devised
00:16:28
something with my partner what we did is
00:16:30
i said that we had a warrant for example
00:16:33
for roy wilson
00:16:34
went to the address knocked on the door
00:16:36
and said police officer mr uh are you mr
00:16:40
bill johnson he says no oh wait a minute
00:16:42
now it says here 52 fourth avenue
00:16:45
uh he says no i'm not bill johnson i
00:16:47
said the physical description you fit
00:16:48
the description he says no i'm not bill
00:16:51
johnson
00:16:52
so i said can you prove that you're not
00:16:53
bill josh i said of course i have a
00:16:55
driver's license let's see of course the
00:16:57
driver license said roy wilson i said oh
00:17:00
roy wilson you know we happen to have a
00:17:02
warrant for roy wilson also and so
00:17:05
it worked pretty good uh we got him on
00:17:08
that one so it was it was kind of fun
00:17:10
you didn't have to fight the guy you
00:17:11
know and he did go to jail and obviously
00:17:14
that's our job to
00:17:16
arrest the violators
00:17:18
as i told you i retired from the los
00:17:20
angeles police department in 84 and i
00:17:22
joined the los angeles community college
00:17:24
district
00:17:25
as a police officer
00:17:27
and
00:17:29
we had kind of a interesting experience
00:17:31
there unfortunately we had a lot of
00:17:33
break-ins in the men's locker room
00:17:36
and the victims were mostly the football
00:17:38
players who when they go practice which
00:17:40
they did every day they put their stuff
00:17:42
in their their wallets and their stuff
00:17:44
in the lockers lock them up and then
00:17:46
went out to practice field so we did we
00:17:48
had a little stakeout and one of our
00:17:50
cadets uh
00:17:52
observed a big
00:17:54
tall six foot three
00:17:56
uh
00:17:59
size african-american
00:17:59
about at least 200 pounds or heavier
00:18:02
break into one of the lockers so he
00:18:03
called us so we came running out and of
00:18:05
course the guy spotted us and took off
00:18:08
unfortunately he went the wrong
00:18:10
direction he went right across the
00:18:12
football practice field and we couldn't
00:18:14
catch him because we had all our gear on
00:18:16
and of course he was free
00:18:18
and so i call it out to the football
00:18:20
players there's the guy who is breaking
00:18:22
into your lockers and the whole 30 40
00:18:25
men team were after him
00:18:26
and they have some good runners
00:18:28
especially the wide receiver
00:18:30
and to make a long story short they
00:18:32
caught up with him on coldwater uh
00:18:34
coldwater canyon
00:18:35
and my job basically was to keep the
00:18:38
football players from
00:18:39
killing him
00:18:40
they really got a hold of that guy
00:18:46

00:18:57
