America's Dumbest Criminals - Season 3, Episode 15 - Meter-Maid Rescue - Full Episode

March 03, 2022 / 20:25

This episode of America's Dumbest Criminals covers various humorous crime stories, including a bank robbery foiled by a meter maid, a pizza theft leading to severe consequences, and a man caught in a bizarre situation after attempting to steal a safe.

In the first story, a bank robbery at the Orange County Federal Credit Union in 1997 involved four armed suspects who tried to erase their trail but were caught due to their poor fashion choices and a large amount of cash found in their vehicle.

The second story highlights a bank robber who left his truck running with an expired meter, leading a meter maid to issue a ticket. This ultimately helped police track him down after the robbery.

Another segment discusses a repeat offender who stole a slice of pizza from a child, which under California's three strikes law, could result in a 25-year sentence.

The episode also features a humorous encounter with police responding to a loud party, where they were mistaken for strippers by a group of women, showcasing the absurdity of some criminal situations.

TL;DR

A meter maid helps catch a bank robber, and a pizza theft leads to a harsh sentence under California law.

the guys in our first story they thought
00:01:56
they'd erased every trace of their trail
00:01:58
but their attempt left an indelible

image here's this week's unforgettable
00:02:03
chapter of caught on camera

[Music]
00:02:11
what happened was on november 24th 1997
00:02:14
we had a bank robbery at the orange
00:02:16
county federal credit union
00:02:18
it was late in the afternoon business
00:02:20
was about ready to close when
00:02:22
four armed subjects came into the bank
00:02:24
and basically terrorized everybody they
00:02:26
got a substantial amount of currency
00:02:28
they escaped from the location and got
00:02:31
into a waiting ford explorer
00:02:34
this vehicle was tracked by our
00:02:36
helicopter approximately 25 miles away
00:02:39
into an uh suburban area of los angeles
00:02:41
in the city of paramount
00:02:44
officers closed in on the area while the
00:02:46
vehicle was followed into the garage
00:02:48
area of this rather large apartment
00:02:50
complex
00:02:52
and
00:02:53
it appears that they were in the middle
00:02:55
of what is called a vehicle switch where
00:02:57
they'll switch the money and suspects
00:02:59
from one car to another when the
00:03:01
officers got on scene they found both
00:03:03
vehicles but none of the suspects
00:03:05
we found a large a waste basket full of
00:03:08
water where the money had been dunked
00:03:10
apparently in an attempt to try to avoid
00:03:12
any type of dye bombs or other devices
00:03:14
that might be in there we immediately
00:03:16
surrounded the place with a number of
00:03:17
armed officers with shotguns and dogs
00:03:19
and went on to do a basically an
00:03:21
apartment to apartment search
00:03:24
and lo and behold one of our officers
00:03:26
notices a couple coming out of the
00:03:27
complex
00:03:28
and what attracted his attention to him
00:03:30
was the gentleman who was with them was
00:03:33
a rather large guy wearing a too small
00:03:36
coat jacket a red football type jersey
00:03:39
some baggy pants and some pink fuzzy
00:03:42
woman's bedroom slippers even for
00:03:44
california this is kind of a real
00:03:46
fashion risk that he's taking he
00:03:49
basically questioned him and uh stories
00:03:51
didn't match they were detained and it
00:03:54
was when we switched him from one car to
00:03:55
another that we knew we had our people
00:03:58
when the officers found approximately
00:03:59
twenty thousand dollars in cash stuffed
00:04:02
under the back seat of the car they of
00:04:04
course said we had the wrong suspects
00:04:06
and the young lady who was with them uh
00:04:08
accused us of planting twenty thousand
00:04:10
dollars in the back seat which is
00:04:12
something the typical officer carries
00:04:14
around with him every day just to throw
00:04:16
down and incriminate innocent people
00:04:18
and luckily
00:04:20
our officers are really in tune with the
00:04:22
styles and we're able to pick the up on
00:04:24
this rather quickly they're going to get
00:04:25
a lot of time for this
00:04:28
i like that a real fashion risk
00:04:30
when our next story the crime's the same
00:04:33
bank robbery but what happens is a whole
00:04:35
nother matter
00:04:36
this guy doesn't just encounter a
00:04:38
department of detectives new
00:04:40
this man comes under the scrupulous
00:04:42
scrutiny of someone who is easily and
00:04:45
wrongly underestimated
00:04:47
the meter maid
00:04:48
[Music]
00:04:53
back about a year ago we had a bank
00:04:55
robbery that
00:04:56
caught our attention because it was kind
00:04:58
of unusual i'm a member of the johnson
00:05:00
county sheriff's office and sometime
00:05:02
last year i assisted the cleveland
00:05:04
police department in an investigation of
00:05:06
a bank robbery they had there in a city
00:05:11
i was making my rounds and i came upon
00:05:14
this expired meter and i thought
00:05:17
something was strange about this because
00:05:19
the truck sitting beside it
00:05:21
was running not only did he leave his
00:05:23
truck running he forgot to feed the
00:05:25
meter so while he's inside robbing the
00:05:27
bank the meter maid comes along and i
00:05:30
thought to myself before issuing the
00:05:32
ticket that someone could possibly steal
00:05:35
this truck because it's abandoned and
00:05:36
running at the time
00:05:38
so after 12 minutes of waiting i went
00:05:40
ahead and issued it the citation then
00:05:43
proceeded to go inside the bank and when
00:05:46
i went inside the back door waiting on
00:05:49
the elevator several ladies walked
00:05:51
outside the bank that was employees
00:05:53
there saying that the bank had just been
00:05:55
robbed
00:05:56
i put two and two together
00:05:58
and realized that the ticket that i had
00:06:01
wrote to the truck in the front that was
00:06:03
running could have been the robbers i
00:06:06
waited for the first officer on the
00:06:08
scene to present the ticket to him with
00:06:11
the license plate number so he was able
00:06:13
to check the license plate on there and
00:06:14
then we ran it down was able to find his
00:06:17
residence and go out there and when he
00:06:18
come home he was waiting on it i went to
00:06:21
the suspect's house and i waited to see
00:06:23
if he would return
00:06:24
and several hours later he did
00:06:31
could happen
00:06:36
when i apprehended him he had money
00:06:38
voting out of
00:06:39
all his pockets i think robert i know
00:06:41
what you're talking about what are you
00:06:43
talking about man and i advised him of
00:06:45
his rights and that he was under arrest
00:06:47
for bank robbery
00:06:48
he said what bank what robbery quit
00:06:50
harassing me man what's this right here
00:06:53
that's my welfare money man what about
00:06:55
this that's a dang ticket that
00:06:57
mentormate gave me at that time he was
00:07:00
placed into custody and thanks to the
00:07:02
good works of the media made the subject
00:07:04
was apprehended
00:07:05
even though he was arrested for robbing
00:07:07
the bank he still had to pay my parking
00:07:09
fine what a dumb criminal
00:07:12
she said personally
00:07:16
don't mess with that woman hey maybe in
00:07:18
school you read the victor hugo novel
00:07:20
les miserables
00:07:21
french whoa we're getting a little
00:07:23
eyebrow here aren't you well our next
00:07:25
story updates that plot with a piece of
00:07:27
pizza a two-time offender makes the huge
00:07:30
mistake of pilfering some pepperoni and
00:07:33
is about to pay dearly for it see how a
00:07:35
petty theft can add up to huge
00:07:37
consequences
00:07:39
[Music]
00:07:41
what this man did had everyone talking
00:07:45
normal people
00:07:46
of
00:07:47
good will
00:07:48
don't pick on kids i mean he's a 27 year
00:07:51
old six foot five man and he's picking
00:07:53
on a seven-year-old child
00:07:55
my book that's a mean-spirited boy he
00:07:57
was a repeat offender who grabbed a
00:07:59
slice of pizza from a little girl even
00:08:02
though he had 30 bucks in his pocket
00:08:04
under california's tough three strikes
00:08:07
law that slice of pizza could cost him
00:08:09
25 years to life behind bars
00:08:12
it just seems to me that for what would
00:08:15
be a misdemeanor
00:08:17
if a person with no record did it that
00:08:19
uh to send somebody to 25 years to life
00:08:21
because of his record
00:08:23
under any circumstances is excessive
00:08:25
maybe so but to take that kind of risk
00:08:28
that must have been some kind of pizza
00:08:32
[Music]
00:08:35
[Applause]
00:08:38
in norman oklahoma it is illegal to read
00:08:40
comic books while driving an automobile
00:08:44
[Music]
00:08:48
the lady in our next story didn't think
00:08:50
there was anything comical when an
00:08:52
officer in chesapeake virginia pulled
00:08:53
her over after all she was just
00:08:55
following a law that she knew by heart
00:08:58
see what we mean in tonight's
00:08:59
installment of america's dumbest excuses
00:09:06
one day i'm monitoring uh
00:09:09
traffic watching a stop sign
00:09:11
and uh i see this lady she just blows
00:09:14
the stop sign goes right through the
00:09:15
stop sign right around the corner
00:09:17
so i pull in after activate the lights
00:09:19
pull her over and everything and i go up
00:09:21
and i asked her i said man you know the
00:09:23
reason why i stopped and she was like
00:09:24
nah and i have no idea
00:09:26
that's what you
00:09:27
you ran right through that stop sign
00:09:28
blew that stop time she said it's right
00:09:30
on red
00:09:31
i said right on red i said man first of
00:09:34
all that only applies to traffic lights
00:09:36
and second of all you still have to come
00:09:37
to complete stop so i'm sitting there
00:09:39
arguing with her and i find it's just
00:09:41
yeah i see it's pointless but she keeps
00:09:43
she keeps arguing a point she's like
00:09:45
it's right on red i can she's like i've
00:09:47
been doing this for 20 years i said man
00:09:48
you've been driving through stop signs
00:09:50
for 20 years and she's like yeah i gave
00:09:52
her a ticket but i have a feeling she's
00:09:53
still turning right on red
00:09:56
you follow that turn right on red rule
00:09:58
don't you daniel
00:10:00
yeah no if i see a police car around i
00:10:02
usually just sit petrified assuming i
00:10:04
look guilty even though i haven't done
00:10:05
anything but our next crook did
00:10:07
something all right it brings together
00:10:10
some of the most obtuse elements i could
00:10:12
imagine a jilted lover a house on fire
00:10:15
and professional wrestling
00:10:17
follow closely
00:10:22
yo fellas up here
00:10:25
if burning passion causes you to set
00:10:27
your lover's house aflame
00:10:29
get off the roof first
00:10:31
when a former wrestler exploded a few
00:10:33
molotov cocktails to set fire to his
00:10:35
ex-girlfriend's house she almost became
00:10:37
a hunka hunk of burn in love
00:10:40
luckily she was smart enough to be out
00:10:42
of the house but he may have been in one
00:10:45
too many headlocks
00:10:47
in the end he saw the error of his ways
00:10:55
okay
00:10:56
sometimes it doesn't take much to
00:10:58
outsmart a criminal other times however
00:11:00
we have to take our hats off to the law
00:11:02
enforcement officers who come up with
00:11:04
the amazing stories to get suspects to
00:11:06
come clean here's one that would even
00:11:08
pass a white glove test
00:11:10
we had received a call to a uh
00:11:14
a burglary at a
00:11:15
gas station located at 6th and main when
00:11:17
we arrived at the
00:11:20
gas station it was quite obvious that
00:11:22
whoever committed the offense was
00:11:25
a former employee because they had
00:11:27
shimmied in got inside and found the
00:11:29
money where it had been hidden
00:11:30
underneath some
00:11:32
shop towels in the back of the gas
00:11:33
station so only somebody with intimate
00:11:35
knowledge of the premises would have
00:11:36
been able to find that
00:11:37
we also found a pair of cotton work
00:11:39
gloves laying on the floor that hadn't
00:11:41
been there the night before
00:11:43
when we picked up the gloves and looked
00:11:45
at them they they just literally wreaked
00:11:47
just like a
00:11:48
garbage container or a trash dumpster
00:11:52
when we were talking to the manager of
00:11:54
the
00:11:55
the service station we asked him if
00:11:56
there had been any disgruntled employees
00:11:58
or customers or what have you
00:12:00
he told us that he had just let a guy go
00:12:02
that had left his gas station gotten a
00:12:04
job working on the sanitation trucks
00:12:07
here in stillwater well putting two and
00:12:09
two together we got the former employee
00:12:11
to drop by after his tour of duty with
00:12:13
the sanitation department
00:12:16
we laid the gloves out in front of him
00:12:17
in a
00:12:18
plastic bag he continually denied the
00:12:23
allegations that we were making at him
00:12:24
for burglary and
00:12:26
running out of every idea that i could
00:12:27
think of to try to get this guy to crack
00:12:29
i finally said i've got fingerprints
00:12:32
and the individual said
00:12:34
well that's impossible i was wearing
00:12:36
gloves at the time
00:12:40
and i said that's okay i got
00:12:41
fingerprints on the inside of your cloth
00:12:43
gloves that you dropped at the scene
00:12:45
bruce looked him right square in the eye
00:12:46
and with the most sincere expression
00:12:48
he'd ever given anybody he said
00:12:51
we're going to take those gloves
00:12:53
we're going to send them to the fbi and
00:12:56
they could turn them inside out and
00:12:57
remove fingerprints off the glove
00:12:58
they're going to put fingerprint dust on
00:13:00
them
00:13:01
raise your fingerprints
00:13:03
turn the gloves inside out and
00:13:04
photograph those fingerprints
00:13:06
my new uh spectro gas chromatograph
00:13:09
method he believed it
00:13:11
which has nothing to do with
00:13:12
fingerprinting by the way
00:13:14
and the guy literally rolled over and
00:13:16
started telling us the the whole story
00:13:18
about how he broke in how he took the
00:13:19
money
00:13:20
and had all of the cash in his apartment
00:13:22
still
00:13:24
all in all
00:13:26
pretty dumb
00:13:30
[Music]
00:13:33
here's daniel with adc headlines
00:13:39
[Applause]
00:13:41
a man attempted to steal a 600 pound
00:13:44
safe from an insurance office he
00:13:46
discovered much too late that it's
00:13:48
unwise to stand on a staircase below
00:13:51
such a large unwieldy object
00:13:54
and i'm gonna spare you the wily
00:13:56
coyote-like details but suffice it to
00:13:59
say that the man understood the gravity
00:14:01
of the situation much too late
00:14:03
[Applause]
00:14:05
now something for people who believe
00:14:06
that star trek is based on a real
00:14:08
captain's log
00:14:10
burglars in larch barons maryland tried
00:14:13
to cut their way into a safe using a
00:14:16
laser tag gun
00:14:19
okay truth is stranger than science
00:14:22
fiction folks
00:14:23
a man stole a car but being in an
00:14:25
unfamiliar neighborhood he lost his
00:14:27
bearings and stopped someone to ask
00:14:29
directions ah but the odds were against
00:14:32
him the person he happened to select was
00:14:35
the car's owner
00:14:38
oh yeah the police who responded were
00:14:40
very helpful in getting the thief where
00:14:41
he needed to go
00:14:43
and that closes the file on adc
00:14:45
headlines news rips from somewhere near
00:14:48
the back of your local newspaper debbie
00:14:55
we're off to ogden utah to hear about a
00:14:57
guy who is so desperate to make a drug
00:14:59
deal that he's willing to ignore blatant
00:15:01
warning signs that he's dealing with
00:15:03
police once again why do you think we
00:15:06
call him dopes
00:15:08
i was working undercover me and my
00:15:10
partner were out doing undercover
00:15:12
narcotics buys
00:15:14
i made a transaction over the cb radio
00:15:16
with a truck driver
00:15:18
i walked over to his truck and climbed
00:15:19
in i was wearing a body wire
00:15:22
transmitting device on the dashboard of
00:15:24
his truck is sitting a real fancy radar
00:15:26
detector the kind that has the lights
00:15:28
that go up and down to measure
00:15:30
for the meter
00:15:31
and as we're sat there making this
00:15:33
negotiation
00:15:34
i'm watching the meter and it is just
00:15:36
bouncing up and down to my voice
00:15:39
so i'm kind of panicking the guy who
00:15:41
looks around he says there must be some
00:15:42
cops around here
00:15:44
so i tell him yeah the cops are always
00:15:45
driving through here
00:15:47
but as the deal progressed he was really
00:15:49
worried about that watching that and so
00:15:51
was i
00:15:52
and he kept looking around for the cops
00:15:54
the cops have got to be around here
00:15:55
somewhere close i told him yeah the plot
00:15:58
cops are around here closer than you
00:15:59
think
00:16:00
and then we completed the transaction i
00:16:02
arrested him hey you're under arrest
00:16:04
police officers
00:16:08
see i told you they were closer than you
00:16:10
thought
00:16:13
hey in the segment we call i'm where
00:16:16
you're who
00:16:17
we like to honor those criminals who've
00:16:20
distinguished themselves in forms of
00:16:22
self-capture
00:16:23
that go beyond the call of duty now this
00:16:25
man in orem utah learns the hard way
00:16:28
that when you blurt out the truth you
00:16:30
hurt your alibi
00:16:32
[Music]
00:16:38
i'd got a call of a
00:16:39
guy trying to pass a fraudulent
00:16:41
prescription so i went up to arrest him
00:16:43
and
00:16:44
he ran from us so after a short chase we
00:16:46
caught him and took him to jail
00:16:48
the case went to court and
00:16:51
he decided that he was going to act as
00:16:52
his own attorney
00:16:53
and i was up on the stand testifying he
00:16:56
was cross-examining me
00:16:57
and as i was
00:16:59
telling my story as to what had happened
00:17:01
all this time he'd been saying that we
00:17:02
had the wrong guy he wasn't involved or
00:17:04
anything like this he wasn't even there
00:17:06
as i was telling the story as to what
00:17:08
had happened he suddenly blurted out
00:17:12
well that's not the way i remember it
00:17:14
i remember looking over the judge and he
00:17:15
was sniffering the county attorney was
00:17:17
laughing
00:17:18
and it pretty much made our case for us
00:17:20
because he had just admitted that he was
00:17:21
there
00:17:23
that was a real dumb thing to do he not
00:17:25
only made a dumb criminal but he made a
00:17:26
dumb attorney too
00:17:29
[Applause]
00:17:33
[Music]
00:17:37
well
00:17:38
as promised we've come to the wild women
00:17:42
portion of our show and i can't think of
00:17:44
anyone more appropriate to introduce it
00:17:45
than you do oh yeah right me a wild
00:17:48
woman child
00:17:50
i don't compare with the naked truth
00:17:52
hiding behind a badge in this story and
00:17:55
as the title says we're not making this
00:17:57
one up
00:18:00
[Music]
00:18:03
oftentimes officers get called on loud
00:18:05
party calls another officer and i
00:18:07
responded to a home one night that was
00:18:09
quite unusual
00:18:10
and we walked up to the door knocked as
00:18:12
we normally do we were greeted by a
00:18:14
young lady
00:18:15
invited us into the house and we
00:18:17
then faced about a half a dozen
00:18:19
middle-aged women sitting around
00:18:21
listening to music
00:18:22
one of the women asked first of all
00:18:25
why we were there and why there were two
00:18:27
of us and we responded that we always
00:18:29
have two officers on the lab party call
00:18:32
and one lady spoke up and said well
00:18:34
officer we we don't bite and then
00:18:37
another woman spoke up real quick and
00:18:38
said speak for yourself susan
00:18:40
and uh we started looking at each other
00:18:42
thinking something's not right here
00:18:44
uh then one of the ladies asked what
00:18:46
kind of music we wanted to dance to we
00:18:48
noticed a
00:18:49
little old boat so i can pull up outside
00:18:50
and this
00:18:51
very well-built
00:18:53
tight uniform cop got out of the car and
00:18:55
seen us and dove underneath the car and
00:18:56
started climbing away and they looked
00:18:58
out and they seen the cops are out there
00:19:00
and then they looked at us they said
00:19:01
well
00:19:01
aren't you the stripper and we said uh
00:19:04
no you guys aren't the real strippers
00:19:08
[Laughter]
00:19:10
we said it was okay you know but ask
00:19:13
them how much they're charging the
00:19:14
stripper
00:19:17
but we don't know the end of the story
00:19:18
did they dance for him or not
00:19:22
you know you know what happened to those
00:19:23
officers happens to me all the time you
00:19:25
know dozens yeah you're right
00:19:28
and if you folks at home were thinking
00:19:30
we were about out of time you're right
00:19:31
too if you think we'll be back with more
00:19:33

00:19:36

00:19:49

00:19:51
show possible they're doing more than
00:19:53
just doing a job when they go to work
00:19:55
each day and we appreciate them for it
00:19:58
