00:00:10
in such a hurry we don't think he's
00:00:12
getting off on good behavior
00:00:14
if you were dressed like this wouldn't
00:00:16
you be inclined to be in a hurry
00:00:18
and what do you need for a stakeout to
00:00:21
catch sticky-fingered donut thieves
00:00:23
there's a whole lot of laughs right
00:00:25
under your nose as we track down

00:01:50

00:01:54
story daniel
00:01:56

00:02:11
would you
00:02:12
all right while i'm vacuuming daniel i
00:02:15
want you to take a look at an amazing
00:02:16
story a nashville tv news crew was in a
00:02:19
perfect position to observe an inmate
00:02:21
releasing himself from a work detail the
00:02:24
tape was rolling and it was caught on
00:02:26
camera
00:02:27
[Music]
00:02:30
we were down there doing a story on some
00:02:33
sort of mysterious sonic boom so they
00:02:35
got a lot of phone calls to the 9-1-1
00:02:37
center so we go down to the 9-1-1 center
00:02:39
well my buddy my cameraman al devine
00:02:41
always rolling videotape we're walking
00:02:43
out into the parking lot going to our
00:02:45
car and suddenly i look up and i see
00:02:46
this jail suit running across the field
00:02:48
i go i'll roll on this guy he's already
00:02:50
rolling he's on it just caught you know
00:02:52
the last 10 or 11 seconds of it and
00:02:53
we're going what was that about over at
00:02:55
the 9-1-1 center so we can tell a cop
00:02:57
who's right there going you better get
00:02:59
right on this man you got an escapee and
00:03:01
we helped catch him basically i said
00:03:03
well what were you thinking he goes man
00:03:04
it was just christmas time and i wanted
00:03:06
to see grandma get home and and you know
00:03:08
it was like andy williams episode or
00:03:10
something so it was really kind of
00:03:12
amazing
00:03:14
[Applause]
00:03:22
all right stop me if you've heard this
00:03:23
one a guy goes into a bar and steals the
00:03:26
tip jar
00:03:27
wins in your pocket and and and what
00:03:30
well what's the punchline
00:03:32
oh it's right here and something to
00:03:34
remember me by
00:03:36
[Music]
00:03:38
we were dispatched to a theft at a local
00:03:40
restaurant we talked to the owner and he
00:03:42
said somebody had stolen a tip jar off
00:03:45
of his counter he said that a subject
00:03:47
had come in
00:03:48
ask for an application
00:03:50
and that was his reason for being there
00:03:52
while he was filling out the application
00:03:54
the owner was walking around doing the
00:03:55
work in the store and when he went in
00:03:57
the back the guy grabbed the tip jar off
00:03:59
the counter and ran out the front door
00:04:01
we got there we looked at the
00:04:03
application he was filling out
00:04:05
it had the name of one of our local
00:04:07
people that we always arrest for petty
00:04:08
thefts and things like that
00:04:10
so come to find out he put all his
00:04:12
correct information on the application
00:04:14
so we just went to his house picked him
00:04:17
up got him in a photo id lined up
00:04:19
owner picked him out right away
00:04:22
and we arrested him saying now we got a
00:04:24
new occupation he makes license plates
00:04:32
you know if your heating and cooling
00:04:33
system isn't working as well as it
00:04:35
should try checking the filter
00:04:38
and if that isn't the problem see if
00:04:39
you've got a burglar caught in the duck
00:04:42
hey it happens see for yourself
00:04:45
we were working at night watch it was
00:04:46
near the end of the watch and we got a
00:04:49
call for burglars in the building at a
00:04:51
store so we go over there
00:04:53
and we have four cars on it two on the
00:04:55
perimeter and two to go inside and
00:04:56
search the building a short time later
00:04:59
get a call on the radio that
00:05:02
they have the situation secure so i walk
00:05:06
on up there and i'm dumbfounded i look
00:05:09
at everybody
00:05:10
what is this
00:05:11
and as it turns out it's this burglar
00:05:14
who
00:05:15
was
00:05:16
hanging upside down encumbered on the
00:05:20
air duct grating for six hours prior to
00:05:24
our arrival he was so
00:05:27
hung up
00:05:28
in the ceiling there that we had to call
00:05:30
the fire department to get the jaws of
00:05:32
life and cut him out of there so
00:05:35
we get him out and so he's telling us
00:05:38
that uh he decided to climb up a tree
00:05:41
which was about five feet away from the
00:05:43
building and he's about twenty feet off
00:05:45
the ground and he jumps onto the roof
00:05:48
pulls the grate off
00:05:50
to the air duct and his story is he
00:05:52
heard some music and he was leaning in
00:05:54
to
00:05:55
listen to the music and he fell in he
00:05:58
had no intention of committing a
00:05:59
burglary when it was all said and done
00:06:01
he had two other burglary charges
00:06:03
pending and the state of missouri gave
00:06:05
them a nice warm place to stay for five
00:06:07
years
00:06:08
[Applause]
00:06:10
[Music]
00:06:13
in carmel california women are not
00:06:16
allowed to wear high heels while in the
00:06:18
city limits
00:06:20
does that mean that men are
00:06:22
but if so that leads right to our next
00:06:23
story a man in a dress is by nature a
00:06:26
funny idea it works for milton berle
00:06:28
flip wilson and mom's mabely but it's a
00:06:30
real drag for a guy hoping to get off
00:06:32
the hook with police here's another of
00:06:34
america's dumbest excuses
00:06:37
[Applause]
00:06:40
i stopped a car in a local park
00:06:42
and it was occupied by one person one
00:06:44
guy and i thought it was suspicious he
00:06:46
would kept leaning over to the front of
00:06:48
the seat looked like he was putting
00:06:50
something underneath the seat so i
00:06:51
pulled up behind him got out started
00:06:53
talking to him a little bit noticed
00:06:55
right away that he was wearing a dress
00:06:57
a pink flower dress drawstrings and had
00:07:00
a slip-on underneath even
00:07:02
so i got a little little suspicious
00:07:04
so after i got him out of the car i saw
00:07:06
some empty beer cans in the car and
00:07:08
placed him under a rest for the the open
00:07:09
liquor in a park and i found 11 bags of
00:07:12
rock cocaine underneath the front seat
00:07:14
and from there i started to ask him
00:07:16
about
00:07:17
you know hey why are you wearing a dress
00:07:19
he said that he was robbed
00:07:22
and since he didn't have any money they
00:07:24
made him put a dress on and so he just
00:07:25
kept it on when i asked him why he
00:07:27
didn't put his clothes back on which was
00:07:28
sitting right on the front seat he said
00:07:30
that his car overheated and he lived
00:07:33
about a half a block away and he was
00:07:34
just about to put the clothes on when i
00:07:35
pulled up based on his dirty feet we
00:07:38
thought he was out dancing in the park
00:07:40
[Applause]
00:07:44
if you are disturbed by senseless acts
00:07:47
of violence against electronic equipment
00:07:49
i suggest you turn away now but if
00:07:52
you're one of those people who wish your
00:07:54
uncle lou would get the camcorder out of
00:07:56
your face at thanksgiving dinner you may
00:07:58
take a certain devious pleasure in what
00:08:00
you're about to see it's a blink of the
00:08:02
eye blue light special
00:08:04
[Music]
00:08:08
if you think the food here is fast watch
00:08:10
the speedy moves of these robbers this
00:08:13
one's a little camera shy ouch
00:08:16
ah but the videotape is even faster than
00:08:18
they are recording unfavorable
00:08:20
impressions of these guys before lights
00:08:22
out just what the police officers order
00:08:25
salad bar no crowbar unfortunately yes
00:08:29
behind bars definitely because remember
00:08:32
not only does the camera never lie it
00:08:34
always has the last laugh
00:08:41
when old yobes robbers really scoped out
00:08:43
their targets they had blueprints they
00:08:45
drew diagrams they carried stopwatches
00:08:47
to practice their schemes well clearly
00:08:50
the crook you're about to see put very
00:08:52
little planning into his heist and it
00:08:54
shows
00:08:56
i normally work the day shift and early
00:08:58
one morning
00:08:59
i left the station a little bit late
00:09:01
went down to the coffee shop to get
00:09:03
myself a coffee because i was a little
00:09:04
tired got my coffee all set to sit down
00:09:06
to finish up paperwork from the night
00:09:07
before and we had a bank alarm come in i
00:09:10
started heading the area like every
00:09:12
other cruiser normally does when we have
00:09:13
a bank alarm and on the way to the bank
00:09:16
we got a description of the vehicle as
00:09:18
i'm driving down one of the streets i
00:09:20
spot a car coming from that direction
00:09:22
about the right amount of time it would
00:09:23
take when you get there i look at him he
00:09:26
looks at me
00:09:27
i figure it's got to be him the way he
00:09:29
looked at me i pulled him over
00:09:30
he gave me an explanation that he just
00:09:32
dropped his daughter off at school and
00:09:34
he was headed home i detained him at the
00:09:36
bank employees who said they saw this
00:09:38
guy
00:09:39
came up and they identified him as the
00:09:40
guy who tried to rob the bank is that
00:09:42
the guy
00:09:45
that's the guy
00:09:47
the kicker is the thing that makes these
00:09:49
things so interesting is the fact that
00:09:51
he entered the bank
00:09:53
through the first set of doors
00:09:55
looked at the tellers all lined up and
00:09:57
ready to go for the morning step to the
00:09:59
left put a mask over his head step back
00:10:02
to the right and tried to go into the
00:10:03
bank
00:10:04
the problem is it was ten to nine
00:10:06
bank doesn't open until nine o'clock
00:10:08
he hauled on the doors until he broke
00:10:10
him but by that time so much time had
00:10:12
gone by the tellers had pushed the alarm
00:10:15
he figured it out
00:10:16
took his mask off and ran out the door
00:10:19
he ran out to his car which was parked
00:10:21
inside the bank right next to the window
00:10:22
so all the tellers could see him get in
00:10:24
his car and leave in the direction that
00:10:26
i was actually coming from he apparently
00:10:28
looked at the clock to the bank right
00:10:30
next to this one and the clock was ten
00:10:32
minutes fast
00:10:33
so four times on this part
00:10:36
[Music]
00:10:41
and now with the news here's a guy who
00:10:43
could add charm to any police lineup
00:10:44
here's daniel with abc headlines
00:10:47
[Applause]
00:10:49
[Music]
00:10:52
while paying for his meal at a barbecue
00:10:54
restaurant in shreveport louisiana a man
00:10:56
decided to place a to-go order for all
00:10:58
the cash in the register the clerk did
00:11:01
as instructed and the robber was out of
00:11:03
the door faster than you could say hot
00:11:04
sauce in fact he left so fast that he
00:11:08
left his wallet containing among other
00:11:10
items his prison id card
00:11:14
now here's a thought that'll launch you
00:11:15
towards the stratosphere of stupidity
00:11:18
hey i'm drunk i think i'll go steal an
00:11:21
airplane
00:11:22
a california man took to the sky on a
00:11:25
not so natural high barely missing a
00:11:27
hospital before he surged through power
00:11:30
lines and took a nosedive into the
00:11:32
median of a freeway cheap thrills hardly
00:11:35
the utility company billed him for one
00:11:37
hundred and eighteen thousand dollars
00:11:40
for damages
00:11:41
plus he's being sued by the owner of the
00:11:43
plane and a man injured by his kamikaze
00:11:46
caper so much for the friendly skies
00:11:49
almost clever drug smugglers thought
00:11:52
they'd come up with a devious way to
00:11:54
transport over six thousand pounds of
00:11:56
marijuana into the us from mexico they
00:11:58
rigged a propane tanker trunk with a
00:12:01
secret compartment yet it was able to
00:12:04
produce propane gas from all of its
00:12:06
valves impressive yes but there was one
00:12:09
unsightly little oversight they
00:12:11
misspelled the name of the well-known
00:12:13
gas company outside of the truck
00:12:17
and that closes the files on adc
00:12:19
headlines news rips from somewhere near
00:12:21
the back of your local newspaper debbie
00:12:23
[Music]
00:12:28
you've seen the bumper sticker that
00:12:29
reads hugs not drugs well here's the
00:12:31
story of a mother who couldn't choose
00:12:33
between the two so she offered her son
00:12:35
both it's our special delivery
00:12:41
the
00:12:42
matter that
00:12:43
we're presenting today is a
00:12:45
case we call the family affair because
00:12:46
it involves the arrest of both an 18
00:12:48
year old son and his mother the 18 year
00:12:51
old defendant was in police custody for
00:12:53
a theft charge and during processing he
00:12:56
requested to make a phone call it's not
00:12:57
uncommon that defendants will ask to
00:12:59
call somebody before they're transported
00:13:01
to the county jail in this instance we
00:13:03
we certainly allowed him to call
00:13:04
somebody and he called his mother we
00:13:06
were happy about that because we had an
00:13:08
arrest warrant for the mother as well
00:13:10
mom arrives a short time later at the
00:13:12
police department
00:13:14
well she requests the opportunity to
00:13:16
give her son a hug before he's
00:13:17
transported to the local prison so we
00:13:19
certainly allowed and they had they
00:13:21
embraced for a short time
00:13:22
the embrace was in such a manner that
00:13:24
they were trying to uh conceal their
00:13:26
bodies away from the officers who were
00:13:28
also present and it just looked unusual
00:13:31
to the officers and they knew something
00:13:32
was up the problem is mom is slipping
00:13:35
him some narcotics during the hug during
00:13:39
the embrace
00:13:40
well of course there is a constable
00:13:41
present there are police officers
00:13:42
present they view this transaction not
00:13:45
only is mother arrested for the
00:13:46
outstanding warrant but also of delivery
00:13:49
of a controlled substance that being the
00:13:50
narcotics to her son who was in police
00:13:52
custody at the time of course the police
00:13:54
officers would never stand in the way of
00:13:56
a mother's love for her son especially a
00:13:58
son who she wouldn't see for a while
00:13:59
because it was being incarcerated so we
00:14:01
were more than happy to allow them to
00:14:04
embrace
00:14:05
[Applause]
00:14:08
colors twists old-fashioned bear claws
00:14:11
honey buns cream filled chocolate
00:14:12
covered or rolled in sprinkles
00:14:15
i practically glaze over just thinking
00:14:17
about them and to think that anyone
00:14:19
would pull a doughnut heist is downright
00:14:21
repugnant they should be dunked in oil
00:14:24
kind of like doughnuts
00:14:26
for the story we go to delray beach
00:14:27
florida
00:14:28
we were out checking out a local grocery
00:14:30
store because they were
00:14:32
having some burglaries that took took
00:14:34
place they were losing some bakery goods
00:14:36
so we decided to put one of our offices
00:14:38
under cover
00:14:39
i was sort of put in charge of taking
00:14:41
care of it so they stuck me in an
00:14:42
undercover vehicle unmarked
00:14:45
and i sat and watched and
00:14:49
i happened to see one of the cleaning
00:14:50
crew members who cleaned the parking lot
00:14:52
throughout the night
00:14:53
grabbing the donuts
00:14:55
and sort of stashed in the bushes for a
00:14:57
later time to snack on and i happened to
00:15:00
catch him in the act
00:15:03
he wasn't too happy with that he said i
00:15:05
can't believe i'm going to jail over a
00:15:06
box of donuts i said well
00:15:09
stealing stealing whether it's a box of
00:15:10
donuts or a car the evidence never got
00:15:12
emptied
00:15:14
nobody takes my donuts
00:15:16
despite the media and public's opinion
00:15:18
all the donuts recovered and returned to
00:15:20
the store
00:15:21
we did not eat them
00:15:23
[Music]
00:15:25
[Applause]
00:15:29
now let's look back at one of abc's
00:15:32
greatest hits
00:15:34
on christmas morning in chevy chase
00:15:35
maryland a couple called the police to
00:15:37
report a burglar in their home who was
00:15:39
downstairs attempting to stuff their
00:15:41
presents into his pants and sneak out
00:15:45
police quietly entered the house and
00:15:46
arrested the little elf who must have
00:15:48
been looking for a pair of suspenders
00:15:50
that he obviously misplaced before
00:15:52
leaving the north pole he was last seen
00:15:55
decking the halls at the local chain
00:15:59
[Applause]
00:16:02
in georgia you have the right to commit
00:16:04
simple battery if provoked by fighting
00:16:07
words
00:16:08
a lady had called the police department
00:16:10
reporting that she had called her stolen
00:16:13
cell phone number hello you have my
00:16:15
phone
00:16:16
and it was
00:16:18
answered by a guy named skip this is
00:16:20
skip
00:16:21
who they just stated he had just paid 50
00:16:23
for the cell phone and he wanted 50
00:16:25
dollars to
00:16:26
basically break even on it they decided
00:16:29
to meet up at the local burger king
00:16:31
where i was able to
00:16:34
be with the victim inside her vehicle
00:16:36
laying down on the floor of the sport
00:16:37
utility vehicle he circles
00:16:39
our vehicle and stops i tell the driver
00:16:43
to have the suspect get out of his
00:16:45
vehicle
00:16:47
at that point
00:16:48
as they're talking i'd get out of our
00:16:50
vehicle
00:16:51
and approach him and place him under
00:16:52
arrest for trafficking's on property and
00:16:55
i searched his vehicle incident to
00:16:56
arrest where i found
00:16:59
some methamphetamine and some marijuana
00:17:01
this guy should have quit while he was
00:17:02
ahead
00:17:05
[Music]
00:17:07
when you need to settle an argument and
00:17:09
judge judy is busy who are you gonna
00:17:10

00:17:13
need to get out more often okay that
00:17:15
movie's 20 years old okay a less exotic
00:17:17
though more timely response would be to
00:17:19
call the police which is just what
00:17:21
happens in this story here's we're not
00:17:23
making this up
00:17:24
[Music]
00:17:29
i got a call to go to a family dispute
00:17:33
and i walk up and there's this old lady
00:17:36
on the front porch i said man what's
00:17:37

00:17:38

00:17:41

00:17:43

00:17:45

00:17:48

00:17:49

00:18:15

00:18:18
on the radio officer may go back there
00:18:21

00:18:22
and when i get back
00:18:24
biscuit's mama's there
00:18:26
and she has her hands underneath her
00:18:29
arms going
00:18:32
walking in a circle
00:18:35
and biscuit was on the front porch
00:18:43
all right i'm going y'all are acting
00:18:45
like children i'm gonna have to treat
00:18:46

00:18:49

00:18:50

00:18:53
