How do visitors find the places and events nearest to them?

An Events block that shows the layout switch or the Display dropdown has a ZIP code or address box and a Distance dropdown once at least one listing has a place. A Directory block does the same through its one search box, which also finds entries by name. A visitor types a ZIP code, a city and state such as Burbank, CA, or a street address. The list then shows the nearest places first, each with how many miles away it is. Distance keeps only what is within 10, 25, 50, 100, 250 or 500 miles. On a month calendar the dates stay in order and events farther away drop out.

Each listing is measured from its ZIP Code when it has one, otherwise from its City and State. On a Directory entry the state goes in State or Country; on an event it can follow the city, as in Burbank, CA. A place too small for the US Census list of cities and towns, such as Ulster Park, NY, needs its ZIP Code. The ZIP Code is not shown on the site.

Listings without a place, such as online shops and live streams, follow the others and drop out once a Distance is chosen. The search covers the United States. Street addresses are looked up with the US Census Bureau's address service, and nothing a visitor types is saved.
