welcome to america's dumbest criminals
00:01:02
i'm daniel butler our constant study of
00:01:05
the criminal mind has led us to
00:01:06
formulate several truisms regarding the
00:01:09
criminal mind such as the buses don't go
00:01:12
out that far and the lights are on but
00:01:14
nobody's home
00:01:16
join us now in scraping the poop from

the shoes of justice as we open the
00:01:19
files on america's dumbest criminals
00:01:23
first up retired captain don parker
00:01:25
starts a trilogy on a dipstick bad luck
00:01:27
brown
00:01:29
we called him bad luck brown which of
00:01:30
course was a made-up name but i'm
00:01:31
telling you it was one of the most
00:01:32
accurate descriptions that you could
00:01:34
find for someone because the guy had
00:01:36
terrible luck most of it self-created
00:01:39
the first time that i had any occasion
00:01:41
to deal with him came when he decided he
00:01:42
was going to knock over a liquor store
00:01:44
it's going to rob a liquor store he
00:01:46
walks into the liquor store place is
00:01:48
really busy doesn't want to create a
00:01:49
commotion so he takes out an envelope
00:01:51
and writes a hold up note give me all
00:01:53
your money this is a stick up i've got a
00:01:55
gun slides the note across the counter
00:01:57
to the clerk who reads it her eyes get
00:01:59
wide she takes all the money out of the
00:02:00
cash register stuffs it in a paper sack
00:02:03
hands it across the counter he takes the
00:02:05
money feeling very proud of himself runs
00:02:07
out of the store
00:02:08
the problem was that he wrote the hold
00:02:10
up note on the back of an envelope he
00:02:12
had just received the day before from
00:02:14
his probation officer so he had his name
00:02:16
address and zip code
00:02:18
a relatively simple matter to run over
00:02:20
to his house and pick him up within a
00:02:22
half hour of that robbery a major
00:02:24
setback for some but bad luck brown
00:02:26
doesn't give up easily i was an
00:02:28
investigator in those days we got some
00:02:30
information that some people were going
00:02:31
to knock off a motel gonna rob the motel
00:02:34
so we had the place staked out we had
00:02:35
deputies inside the motel we had people
00:02:37
at either end of the parking lot myself
00:02:39
and three or four others were lined up
00:02:40
in the woods facing the front of the
00:02:42
motel right in the middle of the
00:02:44
stakeout comes this raggedy old station
00:02:46
wagon driving across the parking lot and
00:02:48
stops we wonder if this is our guys he
00:02:51
gets out walks over under a street light
00:02:54
we recognize him it's the guy that we
00:02:55
call bad luck brown what is he doing he
00:02:58
walks over to an unattended lawnmower
00:03:01
that some maintenance guy had left out
00:03:03
on the side of the building grabs the
00:03:05
lawnmower takes it back to the station
00:03:07
wagon lowers the tailgate throws the
00:03:10
lawnmower it's stealing a lawnmower in
00:03:12
front of about 18 cops jumps back in the
00:03:15
car and of course the supervisor said we
00:03:17
you know we can't let them drop off with
00:03:19
a lawnmower so the other two deputies
00:03:21
pull up we're chasing him as we're
00:03:23
running we can't catch him i decide
00:03:25
enough is enough i'm going to fire that
00:03:27
proverbial warning shot to slow him down
00:03:29
i pull my gun out pow i fire a shot into
00:03:31
the ground
00:03:32
it didn't exactly do what i hoped it
00:03:34
would do because it scared all the other
00:03:35
cops all the deputies hit the ground but
00:03:38
it did work because badlock tripped over
00:03:40
one of the deputies sprains his ankle
00:03:43
and that's how he caught him some people
00:03:45
learn from their mistakes bad luck brown
00:03:47
learns to make dumber mistakes
00:03:49
by far his most successful
00:03:51
way of earning his title came some years
00:03:54
after that he decided to break into an
00:03:56
auto parts store and steal a bunch of
00:03:59
batteries car batteries this is the
00:04:00
middle of the summer time down here in
00:04:02
florida it gets warm i mean it's
00:04:04
probably 90 degrees even though it's
00:04:06
nighttime car batteries are not the
00:04:09
lightest things in the world they weigh
00:04:10
what 20 30 pounds each the guy is
00:04:12
absolutely drained loads the whole back
00:04:14
seat of his car up by time he gets
00:04:16
finished he's exhausted collapses in the
00:04:19
front seat car won't start he's got a
00:04:21
dead battery
00:04:23
and the guy is about half drunk he goes
00:04:25
nuts he's out there screaming and
00:04:27
cursing and pounding on the hood of the
00:04:29
car we'll guess what the lady hears all
00:04:32
this young calls the cops i'm the first
00:04:33
one on the scene and i see this drunk
00:04:35
out there screaming pounding and cursing
00:04:38
trying to get his car to start
00:04:39
with batteries with a back seat load of
00:04:42
car batteries that's bad luck brown

00:05:28

00:05:33
first words out of their mouth is

00:05:46

00:05:48
they're my cousins
00:05:50
so whose jacket are you
00:05:53

00:05:56
don't care that look this isn't even my
00:05:57
jack that's my brother's jacket
00:06:00
he let me borrow it this is not my
00:06:01
jacket it's not my britches it's not my
00:06:04
underwear
00:06:06
wherever it's found it's not mine
00:06:09
i don't care it's not my back
00:06:14
now from the adc security cam vaults a
00:06:16
story we call
00:06:18
dipstick the woman posing as a
00:06:21
prostitute is an undercover officer the
00:06:23
man in the truck well he's a dumb
00:06:25
criminal
00:06:26
after he propositions the undercover
00:06:27
officer he realizes he doesn't have any
00:06:30
money
00:06:31
then he gives his best excuse
00:06:34
my mechanics
00:06:37
yes this dumb criminal just said he
00:06:39
can't go with the woman right now
00:06:41
because he has to get his oil changed
00:06:44
at least his priorities are in order
00:06:47
you know i'd always heard that there was
00:06:48
something women like about a pickup man
00:06:51
now we know
00:06:54
he had to get his oil changed
00:06:56
clean oil
00:06:59
daryl price of charlotte recounts the
00:07:01
story of a knothead who was faking it
00:07:05
we had a guy file a police report that
00:07:07
he had been beaten up and robbed
00:07:10
and when we did the interviews his
00:07:11
robbery that he was describing to us at
00:07:14
that time didn't match what he had
00:07:15
described in the report
00:07:17
and
00:07:18
you know as
00:07:19
we catch on to those things pretty quick
00:07:21
because there's a lot of fake robbery
00:07:23
reports out there i started questioning
00:07:25
him harder and harder basically becoming
00:07:27
an interrogation and finally he broke
00:07:29
down and admitted that he was off with a
00:07:31
girl another girl other than his wife
00:07:35
when her husband had caught him and
00:07:38
given him quite a bump
00:07:48
that wasn't the problem problem was how
00:07:49
was he going to explain to his wife how
00:07:51
he had been beaten to you know
00:07:52
practically to death
00:07:54
so he made up this whole robbery thing
00:07:56
just to
00:07:57
appease his wife

in new york it used to be against the
00:10:00
law for a man to flirt with a woman but
00:10:03
it was okay for men in uniform to harass
00:10:05
cameramen
00:10:07
now two guys with a wet nap for a brain
00:10:09

00:10:11
i was working the midnight shift
00:10:15
up in the north nashville area
00:10:18
and we received a
00:10:20
silent robbery alarm and i proceeded to
00:10:23
the scene and when i pulled into the
00:10:25
parking lot
00:10:26
i noticed this subject come out the door
00:10:29
and with a cash drawer in his hand and
00:10:31
he fell in the parking lot
00:10:33
and his pants were down around his
00:10:35
ankles
00:10:37
so i
00:10:38
i approached the man and arrested him
00:10:42
and i went in to ask him what happened
00:10:43
and there was cash drawers and money
00:10:45
laying all over inside and they said
00:10:47
that these two subjects came in
00:10:49
the one man that i had
00:10:52
his pants kept falling off and he kept
00:10:54
pulling them back up
00:10:55
and he got the cash drawers
00:10:58
and when they went to go out the door
00:11:01
the one with the gun went through the
00:11:02
door first and as the door came to it
00:11:05
hit the cash drawers and all the money
00:11:07
went everywhere in his pants he let go
00:11:09
of him and they fell down around his
00:11:10
ankles and he fell in the parking lot
00:11:13
and he was arrested for armed robbery
00:11:16

00:14:07
next up paul muller gives us the naked
00:14:09
truth about the men who were gone in a
00:14:12
flash well this uh tale goes back to the
00:14:15
early 70s when streaking was in vogue a
00:14:18
lot of college kids were
00:14:20
involved in that sort of thing
00:14:23
and one night i was working
00:14:26
plain clothes
00:14:27
and i went to a restaurant downtown and
00:14:31
i was sitting there eating
00:14:33
and there was quite a few people in the
00:14:35
restaurant
00:14:36
and all of a sudden some people were
00:14:39
i could see they were jumping and
00:14:41
hollering about something that was going
00:14:42
on when i looked up from my
00:14:44
food
00:14:45
and the two guys ran right past my table
00:14:49
the only thing they had on were their
00:14:50
shoes and their underwear over their
00:14:52
head and i was shocked
00:14:54
i hadn't seen anything like this before
00:14:56
of course i heard i'd heard about it
00:14:58
well they had a getaway car in the
00:15:00
parking lot the first guy got to the car
00:15:03
and was able to open the door
00:15:05
he put his foot in the door and hollered
00:15:07
go so
00:15:09
she floored it
00:15:10
the guy the second guy
00:15:12
hadn't made it to the car yet and he's
00:15:14
running this fella just ran on across
00:15:17
the street up into the bushes
00:15:19
and uh luckily we had a police car
00:15:21
several blocks away
00:15:23
the uh the car was stopped and
00:15:26
we we made the arrest on that particular
00:15:29
individual the other one had made it up
00:15:31
in the block and although we did look
00:15:33
for him for a while
00:15:35
we never did find him but the first guy
00:15:38
was able to tell us who it was with him
00:15:41
and the man that got away walked along
