America's Dumbest Criminals - Season 1, Episode 4 - Pull Over and Wake Up - Full Episode

December 02, 2021 / 20:23

This episode of America's Dumbest Criminals features stories about inept criminals, including a man who falls asleep in his car, a car thief who is easily identified, and a burglar who breaks into the wrong house.

Daniel Butler introduces the episode, highlighting various dumb criminal antics. One story involves a man from Birmingham who chased a burglar who kept running into bushes, making it easy for the officer to catch him.

Another segment discusses Larry Johnston from New York, who accumulated 2,800 parking tickets over several years while trying to evade fines. His story illustrates the lengths some will go to avoid consequences.

In a humorous twist, a man is pulled over for speeding but jumps into the back seat to pretend he was not driving. The police find this excuse unconvincing, leading to his arrest.

The episode also showcases a series of actual footage clips of criminals making foolish decisions, reinforcing the theme of ineptitude among those who break the law.

00:01:00
welcome to america's dumbest criminals
00:01:02
i'm daniel butler it doesn't matter who
00:01:05
you are or what your education is when
00:01:07
you decide to break the law everything
00:01:09
goes wrong true some criminals are born
00:01:12
to dumbness some achieve it but most
00:01:15
have dumbness thrust upon them you're
00:01:17
about to meet the least wanted of the
00:01:19
most inept as we open the files on
00:01:22
america's dumbest criminals
00:01:25
mcintosh of birmingham tells us about a
00:01:27
dumb criminal who could run fast but he
00:01:29
just couldn't run far
00:01:32
we had
00:01:35
a burglary
00:01:37
call go out
00:01:39
and it was one of the old mom-and-pop
00:01:40
type grocery stores
00:01:42
and they said there was a couple of guys
00:01:43
breaking in the back of the store so my
00:01:44
partner and i eased up with their lights
00:01:46
off they spotted us and they just bolted
00:01:48
out the front door shattered the front
00:01:49
door and ran
00:01:51
one went south and one went north my
00:01:53
partner being smart he went after the
00:01:54
shorter fatter guy
00:01:56
so i took off after my guy
00:01:58
this guy had a 40-yard head start and i
00:02:00
thought well no chance but i'll put on
00:02:01
the show
00:02:02
but as he crossed the street like i said
00:02:05
this residential section this man all
00:02:06
the way down his yard had like eight to
00:02:09
ten foot high uh
00:02:11
spruce type bushes that were real wide
00:02:14
and as he crossed the street he was
00:02:15
looking back at me and he ran right into
00:02:17
one fell down on the other side you know
00:02:19
and so
00:02:20
i kind of gave a little chuckle and
00:02:21
thought well i'll gain a little bit well
00:02:22
he jumped up and i mean each one spaced
00:02:24
like 15 feet apart
00:02:26
he jumped up ran looked back at me and
00:02:28
ran into the second one
00:02:30
tumbled through the other side well but
00:02:31
now i'm gained on him and he ran through
00:02:33
the third and ran through the fourth and
00:02:34
i would have caught him by the third one
00:02:36
but i was laughing so hard by the time i
00:02:38
got to him
00:02:42
so he
00:02:43
snatched him up
00:02:46
mr larry johnston of new york was issued
00:02:49
2 800 parking tickets between 1985 and
00:02:52
1988 he used 19 addresses and 36 license
00:02:56
plates to evade paying the 150 000 in
00:02:59
fines he began parking without his car
00:03:01
but the street sweeping was brutal while
00:03:04
running radar one afternoon an
00:03:06
undercover narcotics officer pulled over
00:03:08
a speeding car with snooze control
00:03:11
let's watch
00:03:13
i had a man
00:03:15
i clocked him speeding
00:03:18
and
00:03:19
he was going
00:03:21
probably 65 and a 40.
00:03:25
so i pulled him over
00:03:27
and as i pulled him over he put the
00:03:29
his car in
00:03:31
in park and jumped into the back seat
00:03:33
and laid down
00:03:34
i didn't know if he was going after a
00:03:36
weapon
00:03:37
or what he was doing so i called for a
00:03:39
backup unit
00:03:40
when my backup unit got there we
00:03:42
approached the vehicle and there was a
00:03:44
female sitting in the front seat
00:03:50
what's he doing i don't know i don't
00:03:52
know what he's doing sir
00:03:54
sir what are you doing
00:03:55
sir
00:03:56
what are you doing
00:03:59
sir get up
00:04:00
get up he tried to tell me that
00:04:03
he wasn't driving the car
00:04:06
that i had the wrong car that he had
00:04:07
been in the back seat of sleep
00:04:09
[Laughter]
00:04:11
he also had warrants out on and i
00:04:14
arrested him for dui
00:04:18
that little nap got our backseat driver
00:04:20
a nice long stretch in jail
00:04:24
and now actual footage of our
00:04:26
extravaganza we call dung criminals on
00:04:29
ice
00:04:31
the roads are closed the police have
00:04:33
asked people not to drive it's icy out
00:04:37
but drive they must
00:04:40
and crash they will
00:04:43
now a young car thief who knows too much
00:04:44
about something he knew nothing about a
00:04:47
four-wheel suspicion
00:04:50
patrolling a strip of fast food
00:04:51
restaurants in memphis two officers
00:04:53
spotted a known car thief pulling out
00:04:55
from a drive-through window in a car
00:04:57
they suspected didn't belong to him at
00:04:59
about the same time he spotted the
00:05:01
patrol unit
00:05:04
the car thief kid took off the cops hit
00:05:06
their lights and sirens and started the
00:05:08
pursuit the officers had dealt with this
00:05:10
kardnapper on numerous occasions in the
00:05:12
past but he was still a minor then so
00:05:14
whenever he'd steal a car the cocky kid
00:05:16
would always go for broke when chased by
00:05:18
the police
00:05:20
this was the first time the officers had
00:05:21
chased him since he turned 18.
00:05:24
now he was an adult and could be tried
00:05:27
as one
00:05:28
the next day the new adult was taken to
00:05:30
the detective's office for questioning
00:05:37
man you got the wrong guy
00:05:42
oh really
00:05:44
you were identified in a car that didn't
00:05:45
belong to you chased for seven miles and
00:05:48
then arrested right after you exited the
00:05:50
vehicle of course it was you there's no
00:05:53
way they could identify me
00:05:56
and why is that
00:05:58
man
00:05:59
i learned a ball cap and the windows of
00:06:01
the car pretended
00:06:03
oh yes he was smart he just identified
00:06:06
himself and confessed all at one time
00:06:09
[Music]
00:06:14
imitating animals is against the law in
00:06:17
miami florida but you can imitate
00:06:19
insects using balloons and glasses
00:06:22
breaking the law is the first step taken
00:06:24
on the road to becoming a dumb criminal
00:06:26
the second step is believing that the
00:06:28
police are as dumb as you are
00:06:30
here's captain rick biliu of the las
00:06:32
vegas police department to tell us about
00:06:34
two men he met on the second step of
00:06:37
that road it was about two o'clock and
00:06:40
we had passed we were driving down
00:06:42
eastern
00:06:43
avenue and we had passed a car that was
00:06:45
alongside the road and we noticed that
00:06:47
it was jacked up and one of the tires
00:06:49
were off of it
00:06:51
or flat i don't recall but we continued
00:06:53
down eastern
00:06:55
and we noticed these two
00:06:57
males
00:06:58
pushing a tire down the street
00:07:01
and they were pushing the tire along
00:07:03
well we knew that further down the
00:07:05
street was a gas station that closed at
00:07:07
11 o'clock
00:07:09
and we thought surmised that possibly
00:07:12
these two
00:07:13
had committed a burglary on the gas
00:07:15
station to get a tire to fix the the
00:07:18
the car that was broken down so we
00:07:20
stopped them got in front and they were
00:07:22
they were latinos they were uh
00:07:25
i believe from mexico but they were
00:07:28
latin males
00:07:29
and i asked the one
00:07:31
where did you get the tire get that tire
00:07:34
not blowing glass
00:07:35
no i playing glaze
00:07:37
which meaning i don't speak english
00:07:40
and i said oh okay and i turned to the
00:07:42
other and i said where did you get the
00:07:44
tire
00:07:45
and he said
00:07:47
i don't know he said it was his tire i
00:07:49
just walked with him for about the last
00:07:51
block i don't know where he got it
00:07:54
and i said oh you're not together and he
00:07:55
said no we've just been walking for
00:07:57
about a block
00:07:58
and i said oh yeah well could you ask
00:08:00
him where he got the tire
00:08:02
so he turned to him and said where oh
00:08:04
you get all the tyro
00:08:08
i don't speak spanish
00:08:10
his partner mumbled something back to
00:08:12
him because it distracted me
00:08:14
and he turned back to me as if to answer
00:08:16
me
00:08:17
and i looked at him and i think my mouth
00:08:19
dropped open and i said where are you
00:08:20
ghetto de tyro he speaks a different
00:08:22
dialect
00:08:24
i said you've got to be kidding me
00:08:27
i said i'm not spanish i don't speak
00:08:29
spanish but i know that's not spanish
00:08:32
and as it turned out
00:08:34
they were both of latin descent
00:08:36
but they were born and raised in the
00:08:38
united states had lived there all of
00:08:40
their lives their parents too and
00:08:41
neither one of them spoke spanish
00:08:43
and
00:08:44
as luck would have it we had another
00:08:46
unit go down and the and the gas station
00:08:48
had been burglarized and they committed
00:08:50
the burglary
00:08:52
so the stolen tyro led to their allesto
00:08:56
coming up a dumb criminal who escaped 46
00:08:59
years too late

welcome back
00:09:16
if you're going to break out of prison
00:09:17
after 28 years a getaway car is a good
00:09:20
place to start that is if you can start
00:09:22
it
00:09:23
back in 1918 victor mitchum was
00:09:25
sentenced to life in prison after 28
00:09:28
years of incarceration he managed to
00:09:29
escape with the help of a lifelong
00:09:31
friend the friend was instructed to
00:09:33
leave a getaway car on an old abandoned
00:09:35
farm near the prison the criminal's
00:09:37
escape went like clockwork as he reached
00:09:40
the old farm there set the car as
00:09:41
planned things were going good but they
00:09:44
weren't going good for long you see when
00:09:46
victor was sentenced way back in 1918
00:09:48
the cars that he knew were all started
00:09:51
by a large crank on the front of the car
00:09:53
this new modern baby didn't have a crack
00:09:55
it was started with a key from the
00:09:57
dashboard a slight engineering
00:09:59
advancement that our fossilized felon
00:10:01
was unable to grasp
00:10:03
he was still sitting in the car
00:10:05
trying to figure it out when the state
00:10:07
police picked him up and gave him a ride
00:10:09
back to prison
00:10:12
[Music]
00:10:18
it is illegal to wrestle an untrained
00:10:20
bull in new mexico but an untrained bull
00:10:23
can beat the living daylights out of you
00:10:28
when now retired officer frank walmer
00:10:30
got the call about a man trying to kick
00:10:32
in a basement door of a woman's home he
00:10:34
didn't expect to find him still there
00:10:37
walmer and his partner were dispatched
00:10:38
to a burglary and progress call in a
00:10:40
residential neighborhood the officers
00:10:42
arrived and the homeowner was very
00:10:44
frightened
00:10:47
as the officer stood in the living room
00:10:48
they could plainly hear all sorts of
00:10:50
thumping and bumping coming from the
00:10:51
basement
00:10:56
the two officers went into the kitchen
00:10:58
and found that someone on the other side
00:11:00
of the basement door was methodically
00:11:02
kicking it in
00:11:09
once he broke through the thick-headed
00:11:10
thief never looked around he twisted
00:11:12
wiggled and with a great deal of effort
00:11:13
family managed to squeeze through the
00:11:15
hole he had made my house
00:11:17
no it wasn't his house
00:11:19
his house is now the big house
00:11:22
and now the more actual footage of dumb

00:11:43
how often would you think a car is
00:11:45
stolen in the united states is it
00:11:48
a
00:11:48
one car every 20 seconds
00:11:51
b
00:11:52
every time you turn around
00:11:54
or c 180 cars per hour
00:11:58
the correct answers were a and c there's
00:12:01
one car stolen every 20 seconds or 180
00:12:03
cars stolen per hour in the united
00:12:05
states
00:12:06
so my question is if they steal them as
00:12:09
fast as we make them then do we ever own
00:12:11
them

00:12:15
officer timothy walker of birmingham is
00:12:17
about to tell us a good story about a
00:12:19
bad excuse we had
00:12:20
we stopped the white female and a white
00:12:23
male in a drug area we know well-known
00:12:26
drug area
00:12:27
and uh
00:12:28
somebody told them that we were in an
00:12:30
unmarked car and somebody said
00:12:32
it's 5-0 you know and 5-0 is you know
00:12:35
they alert everybody in the in the area
00:12:37
that 5-0 is the police so everybody
00:12:39
knows the police is in the area when
00:12:40
they say 5-0
00:12:42
so uh upon them saying that the white
00:12:45
male and the white female
00:12:47
after they'd parked they backed up and
00:12:49
left the area anyway we called up to
00:12:51
them and they said the reason that they
00:12:53
were in the areas they didn't know the
00:12:55
area
00:12:56
and that she had just got off of the
00:12:58
expressway and she was lost so i said
00:13:00
was that the reason you parked in the
00:13:02
project
00:13:03
because you were lost and she was like
00:13:05
she didn't have an excuse for that but
00:13:07
the reason she was in the area in the
00:13:08
first place was she was lost
00:13:11
coming up a bafflingly dumb counterfeit

00:13:39
about to provide an interesting piece of
00:13:40
evidence to get his conviction your
00:13:42
honor
00:13:43
while my client is suspected in numerous
00:13:46
thefts in town
00:13:47
there's very little evidence to support
00:13:49
these charges your honor i beg to differ
00:13:52
with my colleague
00:13:53
my house was broken into recently and it
00:13:56

it used to be against the law to travel
00:14:07
on the streets of brewton alabama in a
00:14:09
motor boat which of course forced all
00:14:11
the bass fishermen to the air
00:14:15
once in a while when stopped by the
00:14:16
police we open our mouths and we say the
00:14:19
right thing and somehow managed to talk
00:14:21
our way out of a ticket
00:14:22
well you're about to meet a guy who said
00:14:24
all the wrong things and talked himself
00:14:27
right into jail
00:14:28
well i was still a young jailer
00:14:31
a highway patrol officer brought in a
00:14:33
fella
00:14:34
he'd stopped him on a minor traffic
00:14:36
violation
00:14:37
tail light out or or something of the
00:14:39
sort
00:14:41
since the man would not sign the
00:14:42
citation the officer was forced to take
00:14:44
him into custody
00:14:47
and when they got to the jail he still
00:14:49
pleaded with the man to sign the
00:14:51
citation so that he could so the trooper
00:14:53
could go on home at the end of the shift
00:14:55
if you don't sign the ticket i'm going
00:14:56
gonna have to go outside and tow your
00:14:58
car and inventory your car well if you
00:15:00
didn't have to be super cop this
00:15:01
wouldn't have happened so go out there
00:15:03
take care of this guy i don't care
00:15:05
we'll all sleep
00:15:08
so the trooper left
00:15:10
and um
00:15:12
as i booked the man in he said when can
00:15:13
i make bail
00:15:16
i said well just as soon as you can get
00:15:17
somebody here
00:15:19
and he said where are my car keys
00:15:22
we give them to the trooper why'd you
00:15:23
give them to the trooper
00:15:25
when he told your vehicle
00:15:27
we do a complete inventory of the car
00:15:30
the whole car
00:15:32
yes sir
00:15:33
the whole car
00:15:37
when the trooper came in again a half
00:15:38
hour later he was smiling
00:15:40
when he opened the trunk to do the
00:15:42
inventory he ran across the burglary
00:15:43
tools and the cocaine
00:15:46
man could this day get any worse well we
00:15:48
also have a felony warrant for your
00:15:49
arrest in georgia
00:15:53
can you believe that guy all he had to
00:15:55
do was sign the ticket he just opened
00:15:57
his mouth to switch feet
00:16:00
and now the great finale of dumb
00:16:02
criminals on ice
00:16:05
[Music]
00:16:19
counterfeiting is a difficult crime to
00:16:21
pull off that's why this dumb criminal
00:16:23
didn't i was in the office and one of
00:16:25
our uniformed officers gave me a call
00:16:27
from on the field and he says we have
00:16:29
this guy at the 7-eleven store that was
00:16:32
detained for trying to cash a bill that
00:16:34
had been altered it's a common practice
00:16:36
of taking a corner off of a
00:16:39
100 and then placing that on the end of
00:16:41
a one and then
00:16:43
i take another 100
00:16:45
and and cutting off the corner of that
00:16:47
100 and placed it on the other side well
00:16:48
this guy cut off part of a one and put
00:16:51
it on the end of a 20 and was trying to
00:16:53
pass it as one dollar bill and get
00:16:54
changed he had the thing reversed he was
00:16:56
losing money not gaining money
00:16:59
can i get my change
00:17:01
so my team was so dumb i told the cause
00:17:03
just take the money impound it and kick
00:17:06
them loose
00:17:07
the man got shortchanged on brain
00:17:11
[Music]
00:17:16
and now sean chadwick of wilton manor's
00:17:18
florida tells us about the dumb criminal
00:17:20
dating game
00:17:22
we have this guy around here this this
00:17:24
is quick and you kind of had to be there
00:17:25
but this is hysterical this guy uh he's
00:17:27
he's not he's not all there and um
00:17:30
he's really pretty harmless and you see
00:17:33
him all the time and he always acts like
00:17:35
he's like a spy or or fbi or cia or
00:17:38
something and we got a call one day that
00:17:41
a guy was walking down the road with a
00:17:43
mask
00:17:45
fully down to his neck i mean his head
00:17:46
was totally covered so that's you know
00:17:49
you get a little suspicious over stuff
00:17:50
like that especially being a cop
00:17:52
so so we drive over there and around the
00:17:56
corner walks this guy with a a paper bag
00:18:00
over his head with two little eyes cut
00:18:01
out you know and just from seeing him
00:18:04
walk i knew exactly who it was you know
00:18:07
and
00:18:08
i'm like why is he doing that you know
00:18:10
now you got to understand this is not
00:18:11
the most attractive individual in the
00:18:13
world to begin with
00:18:14
and so
00:18:15
he comes walking up and i said
00:18:17
i said joey i said why do you have a bag
00:18:19
over your head he goes
00:18:21
trying to get a date
00:18:27
[Music]
00:18:32

00:18:34
