Apple Changes Course on Right to Repair

November 19, 2021 / 52:44

This episode covers EV news, Apple's right to repair announcement, and the rebranding of Staples Center to Crypto.com Arena. Hosts Marquez Brownlee and Andrew Edwards discuss the implications of these topics.

Marquez expresses confusion over the rebranding of Staples Center to Crypto.com Arena, highlighting the $700 million deal and questioning the name's catchiness. He reflects on how iconic names like Staples have shaped memories in sports.

The hosts then shift to Apple's announcement of a self-service repair program, allowing customers to access genuine parts for iPhone 12 and 13 models. They discuss the significance of this move in the context of right to repair legislation and Apple's previous stance on repairs.

They also talk about the Lucid Air winning Motor Trend's Car of the Year, expressing skepticism about its delivery and performance claims. The conversation includes comparisons to other EVs like the Rivian and Tesla.

Finally, they touch on the Mustang Mach-E GT's performance limitations and the upcoming Subaru Solterra and Nissan Ariya EVs, analyzing their features and pricing in the current market.

TL;DR

Marquez and Andrew discuss EV news, Apple's repair program, and the Staples Center rebranding to Crypto.com Arena.

all right what is up fellow tech timber
00:00:08
sailors hope your seas are smooth
00:00:11
september
00:00:13
there we go what's up uh tech member
00:00:16
crusaders how's it going
00:00:18
welcome to the wayform podcast uh we're
00:00:20
your hosts i'm marquez and i'm andrew
00:00:22
and today's episode we have like a whole
00:00:25
lot of eevee news we've got some
00:00:26
announcements some disasters some just
00:00:28
pure head scratchers uh we kind of guy
00:00:31
have it all and then apple officially
00:00:33
announcing some right to repair steps
00:00:35
they're taking which kind of blew all of
00:00:37
our heads off really interesting yeah
00:00:39
but but but first
00:00:40
marquez is big mad
00:00:43
why are you mad marquez i am uh i don't
00:00:46
know if i'd say i'm mad as much as i'm
00:00:47
just a little bit uh
00:00:51
confused i don't know i just so okay we
00:00:53
got the news this week that
00:00:55
staples center
00:00:57
the iconic
00:00:58
you know middle of la arena host the
00:01:01
lakers and the clippers and i'm sure
00:01:02
like four or five other teams
00:01:04
will be rebranded
00:01:07
i believe starting next year
00:01:09
as
00:01:09
crypto.com arena so this crypto.com
00:01:13
company
00:01:14
inked a deal they'll be the the name of
00:01:17
the arena for the next 20 years and i
00:01:19
was like i was looking it up i was like
00:01:20
wow that's a that's a long time
00:01:22
obviously staples center is probably one
00:01:24
of the most iconic in the states
00:01:26
and uh
00:01:27
i was so curious how much that cost and
00:01:29
it's 700 million dollars the only reason
00:01:32
i'm confused is like
00:01:34
i don't know crypto.com doesn't seem
00:01:36
like a great name for an arena it's the
00:01:37
crypto.com arena yeah like in terms of
00:01:40
just catchiness and rolling off the
00:01:42
tongue staple center is way easier way
00:01:45
more iconic i mean yeah you mentioned
00:01:47
it's it's built to the iconic-ness of it
00:01:49
yeah i was thinking about this i was
00:01:50
like
00:01:51
here's my slightly lukewarm take all
00:01:54
arena names are pretty bad
00:01:56
but we've gotten used to them over time
00:01:58
because we say them so often like i've
00:02:00
seen i've pulled up right now just a
00:02:01
list of a bunch of them in the us just
00:02:03
for nba teams
00:02:04
the milwaukee bucks play at pfizer forum
00:02:10
forum uh we've got smoothie king arena
00:02:13
that's in the nba we've got
00:02:15
the cavs play at rocket mortgage field
00:02:17
house like nobody really wants to say
00:02:19
the company names out loud but staples
00:02:22
is a company and they've paid for their
00:02:24
name to be on the side of the arena and
00:02:26
tons of memories have been made with
00:02:28
iconic lakers teams especially in
00:02:30
staples center and i still think people
00:02:32
are going to call it staples center
00:02:34
that's the funny
00:02:35
but
00:02:36
there is going to be like you know
00:02:37
there's a i think someone's already
00:02:38
tweeted like a render of like that
00:02:40
helicopter shot at the beginning of an
00:02:41
mba broadcast where like
00:02:43
it it's going to be on the on the front
00:02:45
on the top on the sides like i i was
00:02:47
saying i went to crypto.com today for
00:02:49
the first time ever i didn't know about
00:02:50
them so it's working and i'm kind of
00:02:53
surprised this is the first
00:02:55
crypto company because oh i bet a lot of
00:02:57
them have 700 million dollars this is
00:02:59
the first time we've seen a crypto
00:03:00
company put their name on an arena like
00:03:02
this yeah i was kind of talking to david
00:03:04
about how crypto.com we didn't know it
00:03:07
was a website and i think it's one of
00:03:09
those sites that suffers from having too
00:03:11
good of a domain name it's like too
00:03:13
general it's too broad that crypto.com
00:03:16
just feels like
00:03:19
too easy like it doesn't it's not catchy
00:03:21
it's good i guess it's only it's it
00:03:23
feels generic but it's kind of what they
00:03:25
are it's like they're a crypto wallet
00:03:26
and a crypto trading service like
00:03:28
coinbase is kind of similar
00:03:30
but it's a coinbase is like a unique
00:03:32
name it's a little more specific yeah
00:03:34
crypto is just now this all-encompassing
00:03:37
internet currency that they just like
00:03:39
crypto.com just feels and you have to
00:03:41
put dot com because if it was just
00:03:42
crypto arena that sounds better but
00:03:44
that's not going to send anybody to your
00:03:46
website right which is the biggest issue
00:03:48
in terms of
00:03:49
like advertising it which is what
00:03:51
they're paying for i think they won the
00:03:53
seo battle i just yeah it's a weird name
00:03:56
also one of my favorite hot takes was
00:03:58
like a lot of urls aren't around for a
00:04:00
very long time like they expire
00:04:02
companies are born and die quickly do we
00:04:04
think crypto.com will still work in 20
00:04:07
years i can only and i imagine i don't
00:04:11
you know crypto's pretty young we'll see
00:04:12
but this is uh that's i'm not mad i'm
00:04:15
just like yeah a little thrown off by
00:04:17
that i think crypto will be around there
00:04:19
whether crypto.com is one of the places
00:04:20
doing it in 20 years although i'm sure
00:04:22
all these places try and lock up
00:04:24
something so long to get somewhat of a
00:04:25
discount and then oh yeah uber i'm sure
00:04:28
plenty of people break contracts at a
00:04:30
certain point if it goes to funky i
00:04:32
wonder if they pay in advance to 700
00:04:33
million or if they pay it like every
00:04:35
year they exist or if they'll be in debt
00:04:37
who knows i don't know how these deals
00:04:39
work i don't know how it works i i think
00:04:40
the biggest thing here that you
00:04:42
mentioned was that it is still the same
00:04:44
building which people just have known as
00:04:46
the staples center for so long like i've
00:04:48
seen nhl arenas switch but it's usually
00:04:50
when a building goes down and becomes
00:04:53
a whole new
00:04:54
arena much easier because you're not
00:04:56
referencing specifically that staples
00:04:58
center will be called staples center for
00:05:00
the rest of its life until it's a new
00:05:02
arena yeah until everyone who who knew
00:05:04
about staples center is dead
00:05:07
uh
00:05:08
apple right to repair we got to talk
00:05:10
about this this one caught us by
00:05:11
surprise this morning it definitely did
00:05:13
i i am fascinated by this and i've been
00:05:16
as we record this which is on a
00:05:17
wednesday which you know you listen to
00:05:19
the podcast on friday i've been sort of
00:05:21
organizing my thoughts into a potential
00:05:22
video so that may be up by the time you
00:05:24
see this um but yeah we can sort of
00:05:26
summarize the announcement and then our
00:05:28
thoughts about it sure we get this apple
00:05:30
newsroom press release titled apple
00:05:32
announces self-service repair program
00:05:34
which is well okay apple's notoriously
00:05:37
been against right to repair so what is
00:05:39
this program so apple will allow
00:05:41
customers like you and me customers who
00:05:44
are comfortable with completing their
00:05:45
own repairs access to apple genuine
00:05:48
parts and tools available first to
00:05:50
iphone 12 and iphone 13 lineups and soon
00:05:52
to be followed by mac computers
00:05:54
featuring m1 ships
00:05:56
and self-service repair will be
00:05:57
available early next year in the us and
00:05:59
then expand to additional countries
00:06:00
throughout 2022
00:06:03
the initial phase of the program will
00:06:04
mostly be focused on
00:06:06
commonly serviced modules such as
00:06:08
iphone's display battery and camera the
00:06:11
ability for additional repairs will be
00:06:12
available later next year
00:06:15
so it goes on to explain all these
00:06:16
different details but there's a lot in
00:06:20
those first two paragraphs there that is
00:06:22
for sure quickly being digested but i
00:06:24
want to go through each of them because
00:06:26
i think there's a lot yeah first of all
00:06:27
we did a video already on write to
00:06:29
repair if you haven't seen it i
00:06:31
recommend watching it i'm pretty biased
00:06:32
but i think it's pretty good we have
00:06:34
some interviews we talked to louis
00:06:35
rossman we have a whole breakdown on a
00:06:37
bunch of different companies including
00:06:38
apple but apple's one of the biggest
00:06:40
companies in the world one of the most
00:06:42
uh influential consumer-facing so when
00:06:44
apple changes a stance and makes a pro
00:06:48
right to repair move like this not only
00:06:50
is it big for apple but it's big for the
00:06:52
ripples it sends through the industry
00:06:54
so the first detail is
00:06:57
they're starting with iphone 12 and
00:06:58
iphone 13 lineups soon to be followed by
00:07:01
m1 max yeah so you know a lot of people
00:07:04
who are probably hoping to get repairs
00:07:05
done are probably on older iphones and
00:07:07
older macs fine i imagine those were not
00:07:10
built with
00:07:11
uh
00:07:12
commonly accessed repairs by normal
00:07:14
people in mind yeah not in mind not that
00:07:17
they couldn't be done but clearly not
00:07:21
when apple was thinking of doing this
00:07:22
because this has clearly been something
00:07:23
they've thought of doing for a little
00:07:25
bit which is probably showing in the
00:07:26
internals yeah to me this says we've
00:07:29
been thinking about this since at least
00:07:30
iphone 12 and m1 max so that's good
00:07:34
um and actually if you look at
00:07:36
some of the tear downs of like this 60
00:07:38
inch macbook pro or the 14 inch
00:07:40
they look a little more friendly at
00:07:42
least for battery repairs there's like
00:07:43
tabs under the batteries now and there's
00:07:44
a couple less screws involved to get in
00:07:47
yeah which is nice i mean we opened our
00:07:49
first in that right to repair video we
00:07:51
opened an iphone 12 i believe it was
00:07:53
right which is the first iphone i've
00:07:55
ever opened and and opening that on the
00:07:57
inside felt like a render it was just so
00:07:59
neat and everything and i mean i've only
00:08:02
opened up a couple phones
00:08:03
none of them i've successfully repaired
00:08:05
so i'm not claiming to be an expert here
00:08:07
but like
00:08:08
that internal looked like
00:08:10
almost inviting almost like it would be
00:08:12
fun to play with yeah and i mean you got
00:08:14
to know what you're getting yourself
00:08:15
into for sure so basically what's
00:08:17
happening is individuals like you and me
00:08:19
paying customers are being added to the
00:08:22
group of people including uh repair
00:08:24
shops that have access to these
00:08:27
documents and parts
00:08:28
so if your screen breaks for example on
00:08:31
your phone you have the choice
00:08:33
to go to an apple store and have them
00:08:35
repair it however much that costs or to
00:08:38
go to an independent repair shop and
00:08:40
have them repair it however much that
00:08:42
costs
00:08:43
or your new option is go look online at
00:08:47
the guides yourself and decide you want
00:08:49
to do it yourself order those parts and
00:08:51
the guides straight from apple repair it
00:08:53
yourself send the parts back to apple
00:08:56
maybe even get a little bit of credit i
00:08:57
believe back on your account for the
00:08:59
stuff you send back for them to recycle
00:09:00
that's what they said and then you did
00:09:02
it yourself on your own time on your own
00:09:04
dime which is a very new option it is
00:09:07
and it does say in there that they
00:09:08
provide some sort of a like service a
00:09:10
repair kit manual that i think they want
00:09:12
you to read first and and decide if
00:09:14
you're comfortable doing this before you
00:09:16
enter in for the
00:09:18
the parts like get the parts mailed to
00:09:19
you and to actually do it yourself
00:09:21
and like you said there it does say that
00:09:23
they're offering some sort of credit for
00:09:25
returning the parts now i'm assuming
00:09:28
that means tools that they send i'm
00:09:29
assuming it means any parts that you
00:09:31
replace so that they can properly
00:09:32
recycle them yeah and that's great
00:09:34
because apple has been this company that
00:09:36
has talked a lot about the environment
00:09:38
lately but it always felt
00:09:40
super hypocritical when
00:09:43
you're so stingent on right to repair
00:09:45
and reusing phones and refurbishing
00:09:47
phones and basically using phones as
00:09:49
long as possible and buying new products
00:09:51
because that's kind of the worst thing
00:09:53
that can happen like cool your boxes are
00:09:54
half the size and you don't include a
00:09:56
charging brick anymore but
00:09:57
really the phones being able to use as
00:09:59
long as possible and recycling them is
00:10:01
what's the biggest impact we can see
00:10:03
yeah so overall i think a good change on
00:10:06
the surface but there's still more
00:10:07
details right so
00:10:09
um
00:10:10
the other thing i want to look at the
00:10:11
initial phase of the program will focus
00:10:13
on the most commonly serviced modules
00:10:15
such as the iphone's display battery and
00:10:17
camera yeah now on one hand that's most
00:10:20
iphone repairs yeah i'm pretty sure like
00:10:22
screen and battery are probably top one
00:10:24
and two right i bet that's like almost
00:10:27
eighty percent of repairs yeah so that
00:10:29
makes sense yeah in theory sure
00:10:31
but this also like if you talk to louis
00:10:33
rossman which we did in our video or if
00:10:35
you ask independent repair shops like
00:10:36
what their biggest problem with the
00:10:37
program is a lot of them will say like
00:10:40
they're so strict about what you
00:10:42
actually have certified access to repair
00:10:44
versus all the other stuff
00:10:46
so you know ports
00:10:48
buttons storage storage face id
00:10:52
notoriously if you repaired or if you
00:10:53
replaced a display with a non-apple
00:10:57
a genuine part yeah and it was like old
00:11:00
touch id too yeah they would disable
00:11:01
face id or touch id they recently
00:11:03
rectified that which is nice but like
00:11:05
now if you want to replace like your
00:11:07
port gets loose or water damaged or
00:11:09
something you just want to replace that
00:11:11
that's not one of the things covered by
00:11:13
apple they don't have manuals or parts
00:11:15
or anything for that you're still got to
00:11:16
go back to the apple store in apple's
00:11:18
world so that hasn't really changed
00:11:22
so again i think it's great that if my
00:11:24
display cracks or if my battery is
00:11:26
getting old i can do that myself but
00:11:28
that's a that's a pretty important note
00:11:30
which is like this isn't changing for
00:11:32
independent repair shops it's still true
00:11:35
yeah and like i think there's clearly an
00:11:37
optimistic side of reading this and a
00:11:38
pessimistic side of reading this and i
00:11:40
think taking a little from both is
00:11:42
really good like if we're talking pure
00:11:45
optimism like this is a step in the
00:11:47
right direction the fact that apple's
00:11:48
even even
00:11:49
using the term like repairability and
00:11:51
stuff like that it's just huge and
00:11:53
something like i said none of us
00:11:54
expected we came in this morning we were
00:11:56
going to record the bottles of april
00:11:58
fool's yeah this article pops up and
00:12:00
we're like okay this is now the number
00:12:01
one thing we're talking about today yeah
00:12:02
so it's interesting the pessimistic side
00:12:04
is
00:12:05
this still feels a little bit like this
00:12:08
is a small first step because how many
00:12:10
people in the the world of one of the
00:12:13
most popular phones in the us at least
00:12:16
how many of those people want to make
00:12:17
these repairs themselves and that's
00:12:19
essentially what this is opening up that
00:12:20
is
00:12:21
very very little but that's always been
00:12:23
the argument so the fact that this step
00:12:25
happened at all is really interesting
00:12:27
yeah and i think that i think i was just
00:12:29
gonna say the question i had right away
00:12:31
was okay why is apple doing this like
00:12:33
they didn't have to they never looked
00:12:35
like they were going to so why are they
00:12:36
suddenly doing this and uh you know
00:12:39
david made a lot of good points about
00:12:40
all the impending legislation around
00:12:43
right to repair the presidential order
00:12:45
there's some local orders in new york uh
00:12:47
a lot of stuff in europe happening where
00:12:49
it like seems like there's a lot of
00:12:51
momentum behind the movement yeah for
00:12:52
sure and apple's squarely in the middle
00:12:55
of that like target like they're the
00:12:57
notorious ones everyone mentions so
00:12:59
they're kind of getting out ahead of
00:13:01
that a little bit by saying look we let
00:13:03
you we let you repair phones we give you
00:13:05
the genuine parts
00:13:06
but we're not going to let you do too
00:13:08
much i think it's pretty clear this is a
00:13:10
like you said a step ahead this is not
00:13:13
listening to the customers this is uh
00:13:15
yeah it's not apparent
00:13:16
this is purely apple focus it's not tim
00:13:19
cook going oh you'd like to repair it
00:13:21
yes okay
00:13:22
this is the first time i'm hearing that
00:13:23
yeah we should do that what great
00:13:25
feedback you have um yeah no so i think
00:13:28
it's a lot of that but it's also and i
00:13:30
think i'll make this point near the end
00:13:31
of the video is like it's a great
00:13:33
headline it's great pr yeah for apple to
00:13:36
have a right to repair positive headline
00:13:38
which goes back into the whole like
00:13:40
getting ahead of legislation thing
00:13:43
but also i still think it makes ripples
00:13:45
in a sort of a positive way i still
00:13:47
think there are the john deeres of the
00:13:49
world there's all kinds of other
00:13:50
companies that don't have anything near
00:13:52
this friendly for like let's say you're
00:13:54
a farmer and you want to repair your
00:13:56
tractor like even if it's only the top
00:13:57
three most replaced parts that's better
00:13:59
than nothing yeah so we're still going
00:14:01
to want to see those ripples through the
00:14:03
industry for other companies to actually
00:14:05
take a bit more of a positive stance on
00:14:07
right to repair even just in our own
00:14:08
tech industry like we're seeing all the
00:14:11
more and more gadgets getting smaller
00:14:13
and smarter smaller and harder and
00:14:14
harder to repair and harder and harder
00:14:16
to find things because they're realizing
00:14:17
that apple's done this so well makes so
00:14:19
much money off of it
00:14:21
they like to do what apple does yeah and
00:14:23
it works so seeing apple go this way
00:14:25
it's gonna make a lot of other
00:14:27
tech companies go the same way yeah
00:14:29
that's awesome the uh the note in the
00:14:32
newsroom thing i want to hit one last
00:14:34
time is they've said that this
00:14:37
program will be expanding to more than
00:14:39
just cameras batteries and screens
00:14:42
they haven't provided any details on
00:14:44
what more things that will be maybe it
00:14:46
will be ports yeah and camera or face id
00:14:48
or maybe not i don't know
00:14:50
and the other thing that we don't know
00:14:52
because it's not anywhere in the article
00:14:53
is
00:14:54
what qualifications will there be to get
00:14:57
these parts and what will the prices be
00:14:59
prices are huge i think and and what the
00:15:02
um rebater
00:15:04
credits are when you return it as well
00:15:06
yeah so
00:15:07
that we'll have to see i mean we'll get
00:15:09
the details early next year when they
00:15:11
like start the program i'm hoping it's
00:15:14
not ridiculous prices there's already
00:15:15
memes on twitter about like oh you'd
00:15:17
like to repair yourself that'll be like
00:15:18
a hundred dollars a pop like
00:15:20
it should be ideally reasonable yeah um
00:15:23
but we all know how expensive it is for
00:15:24
a player like a to go to the apple store
00:15:26
and get a new screen if you don't have
00:15:28
album care it's it's very expensive so
00:15:30
we'll see all that is yet to be seen but
00:15:33
hey it's a positive right to repair
00:15:35
apple headline who would have thought
00:15:37
who would have thought that's not on my
00:15:39
2021 yeah my bingo card did not have
00:15:42
that on on the square well i'll i'll
00:15:44
leave that we'll go to a break on a
00:15:46
happy note there that's a pretty solid
00:15:48
spot to take a quick enjoy so we'll take
00:15:50
a quick quick break we'll come back we

00:16:55
all right we're back
00:16:56
we're welcome to welcome to the car
00:16:58
section of the episode we have a bunch
00:17:00
of random stuff
00:17:02
in the ether that all happened to be
00:17:04
related to cars in some way yeah but i
00:17:06
think they're all really interesting so
00:17:08
they're all like kind of fun yeah let's
00:17:10
go through them you'll understand why
00:17:11
we're talking about these they're all
00:17:12
talking to tech stuffs but uh first up
00:17:16
lucid air
00:17:17
becomes motor trend's car of the year
00:17:21
okay cool now
00:17:23
i think uh
00:17:25
we've had a there's a large variety of
00:17:27
cars that have one car of the year for
00:17:28
motor trend like i'm not this doesn't
00:17:31
shock me but it is interesting
00:17:33
that uh that this particular one won i
00:17:36
think tesla model s won a couple years
00:17:38
ago it has its early years and i think
00:17:40
there was one other ev that one um i
00:17:42
mean listen i don't follow motor trend
00:17:45
that much from after this happened
00:17:47
there's a lot of people saying that they
00:17:48
haven't made some of the best choices in
00:17:50
the past oh yes motor trend in general
00:17:52
but like this is just one where
00:17:55
the lucid air
00:17:56
in both of our eyes as far as i know has
00:17:58
just kind of been
00:18:01
we've been wondering is this a fair day
00:18:03
or is this an actual real thing that's
00:18:05
going to come to market so to me we i
00:18:08
did a video on the lucid air riding in
00:18:10
it very close to fully functioning
00:18:12
prototype i think like air conditioning
00:18:14
didn't work which was like yeah
00:18:16
we were the first people to do that this
00:18:17
is yeah i was on the job for like four
00:18:19
months and we went over and did that and
00:18:20
i was so amped it was so cool yeah so
00:18:23
we've seen the rolling lucid air
00:18:26
happen many years ago right and i this
00:18:29
has happened before where companies are
00:18:30
like hey marquez come back check out our
00:18:32
factory hey marquez come back check out
00:18:35
like this new update to our interiors
00:18:36
and i'm like i've seen the car i've
00:18:39
covered the basic idea
00:18:41
please start shipping them yeah because
00:18:43
i want to see if they can actually
00:18:44
deliver on a couple really key things
00:18:46
which include 500 plus 520 miles of
00:18:50
range yeah now okay i saw that they had
00:18:52
like an initial delivery event but that
00:18:55
got me really amped because i was like
00:18:56
oh my god there's really evs out there
00:18:58
in the wild today with 500 miles of
00:19:01
range please somebody tell me there's
00:19:03
like a video on youtube or some test or
00:19:04
something where i can go watch that
00:19:06
happen haven't seen them yet i'm gonna
00:19:08
keep looking but
00:19:10
uh i would really like to see
00:19:12
like somebody go do the road trip test
00:19:15
or like actually get the 500 miles of
00:19:16
range because that if that's real that
00:19:18
no one's talking about it enough that's
00:19:20
a huge deal if
00:19:21
it only gets 80 of that it is still by
00:19:24
far the best range out of any ev that's
00:19:27
out there it's like ash astronomical
00:19:29
like range yeah compared to everything
00:19:31
else you know plaid plus got cancelled
00:19:33
and part of the reason why is it's like
00:19:34
that car would have had like a 500 plus
00:19:37
mile range also and i think elon had a
00:19:39
quote on twitter after it got canceled
00:19:41
saying you know what 400 miles is enough
00:19:43
like we just don't need more than we rip
00:19:45
that apart yeah we're like okay but like
00:19:46
if you could do 500 you would people
00:19:48
would buy it over the 400. um so the
00:19:51
fact that lucid is doing it allegedly i
00:19:54
want to see it but i think that would be
00:19:55
super cool so the lucid air is out there
00:19:58
i don't really honestly care who wins
00:20:00
motor trend car of the year but i think
00:20:01
it's interesting that it's so brand new
00:20:04
and barely shipping and we're giving it
00:20:06
these awards it's like all right well
00:20:08
motor trend you do you but i want to see
00:20:11
more of them like in that i want to see
00:20:12
them i mean it's something where i i
00:20:14
followed them on twitter from the day
00:20:16
that we went to visit them and i
00:20:18
remember like two years ago them
00:20:20
tweeting
00:20:21
and i was like i forgot i followed these
00:20:22
guys this is just like i think when we
00:20:24
first went their original
00:20:26
release date was supposed to be 2019
00:20:28
we're now end of 2021 and i think
00:20:31
i just cannot find somebody who has this
00:20:34
as an owner including in the lucid
00:20:36
motors subreddit
00:20:37
where people are really excited about it
00:20:39
people have reservations for it there's
00:20:40
a whole thread that says who has theirs
00:20:42
yet there's probably like 50 comments
00:20:44
and the closest you can get to it is i
00:20:46
met somebody with vin number zero zero
00:20:48
six and they really love it
00:20:51
and that's the closest i can get to
00:20:52
really seeing this thing in the wild
00:20:55
interesting yeah and you know i think a
00:20:57
lot of the the early delivery stuff from
00:20:58
all these companies are probably like
00:21:00
super fans or like employees and things
00:21:02
like that so we don't know where those
00:21:03
deliveries went but uh i want to bring
00:21:05
up two things one uh tesla model s got a
00:21:09
motor trend car of the year also very
00:21:11
early in its life cycle i think it was
00:21:13
like before range was proven to the
00:21:15
public yet probably very few deliveries
00:21:17
as well so i have actually no problem
00:21:19
with it winning the award i just think
00:21:21
well i want to see more of these in the
00:21:22
wild um but number two
00:21:24
the lucid air seems awesome
00:21:27
it seems really good it's very expensive
00:21:29
that should just it is say that right
00:21:31
off the top it's like 140 000. we've
00:21:33
always kind of known that because like
00:21:35
it was very
00:21:36
they very specifically told us like that
00:21:38
top end model with the bucket seats in
00:21:40
the back that like that was like a
00:21:42
luxury
00:21:43
like
00:21:44
rideshare car that wasn't really
00:21:47
somewhere between that and like a
00:21:48
maybach yeah like you want to be in the
00:21:50
back seat of the yes
00:21:52
exactly and for that it is awesome and
00:21:54
for that 160 000 is probably not that
00:21:57
crazy if you're looking towards like
00:21:58
bentleys and stuff like that yeah
00:22:01
with the
00:22:02
the specs that this thing has
00:22:05
it's crazy i think it's a good-looking
00:22:07
car it kind of looks like a like
00:22:09
updated lincoln which i don't
00:22:12
know but again
00:22:14
yeah yeah um
00:22:15
there's some really really cool things
00:22:18
1111 horsepower
00:22:20
1390 pound foot of torque like imagine a
00:22:24
maybach 2 thousand horsepower what
00:22:27
there's just like
00:22:28
some really really crazy numbers about
00:22:30
this and my issue with it winning though
00:22:33
is like
00:22:35
i get that they're trying to do things
00:22:36
that are like
00:22:38
breaking trends or like these big new
00:22:40
things in the category
00:22:41
we
00:22:42
are starting to see rivien
00:22:45
be delivered right now and to me rivian
00:22:47
like hits this a little better and it
00:22:49
wasn't even in the finalists yeah yeah i
00:22:51
think if lucid actually does
00:22:53
is delivering and delivers a little more
00:22:55
like it could have been next year's
00:22:56
where rivian seems a couple steps ahead
00:22:59
right and is also this pickup truck
00:23:01
that's coming out evie
00:23:03
really really great stuff on it
00:23:06
i'm somewhere between giving them credit
00:23:08
for not being faraday and just like
00:23:10
never delivering anything
00:23:12
and wanting to see more like maybe i
00:23:16
mean rivian's also barely starting
00:23:18
deliveries but just a little bit more i
00:23:19
want to see them in public hands youtube
00:23:21
tests yeah like we see like maybe plaid
00:23:24
model s is like barely out now
00:23:26
to that level maybe um so i'm sort of
00:23:28
stuck in between them but at the end of
00:23:30
the day i would love to drive like a
00:23:32
finished version i'm excited for lucid
00:23:33
and i think why i've always been so
00:23:35
excited for lucid is because
00:23:37
when i started was right when you got
00:23:39
back from ces where you test drove the
00:23:40
faraday and it was like the completely
00:23:42
gutted interior you know like
00:23:45
absolutely nothing and then we directly
00:23:48
went to lucid where i was like wow
00:23:49
they're so far ahead of faraday here and
00:23:52
it felt so much more promising and it
00:23:54
felt like something that was right
00:23:55
around the corner an hour four years
00:23:57
later and
00:23:58
waiting yeah so i hope this doesn't
00:24:00
sound mean against lucid i'm really
00:24:02
excited to try it but it just felt weird
00:24:05
i think there's more
00:24:06
remax in the wild probably right if
00:24:08
we're talking about that guy saying vin
00:24:10
number zero zero six uh-huh
00:24:13
i can almost imagine there's more rimacs
00:24:15
out in the wild so technically so the
00:24:17
rimac concept one had i think let me
00:24:20
look at it it was a single digit number
00:24:22
i thought it was double digit but in the
00:24:24
teens
00:24:25
uh they made student hammond crash like
00:24:28
one of them
00:24:29
the what
00:24:30
he crashed
00:24:32
oh oh one of them okay yeah yeah so the
00:24:34
rimac concept one they only ever made
00:24:36
eight
00:24:37
wow okay six have been probably wrong
00:24:40
about that six have been sold
00:24:42
the one that wasn't sold is the one we
00:24:44
drew
00:24:45
and the eighth one is the one that was
00:24:47
crashed okay so there is only
00:24:49
uh
00:24:51
yeah only eight ever made uh and then
00:24:53
the concept two or the navera that's
00:24:56
gonna be like 18 right or something yeah
00:24:58
i don't believe there's any deliveries
00:25:00
yet but they're doing a lot of tours
00:25:02
with it and it's coming soon
00:25:04
nevertheless not only that was a pure
00:25:06
yeah i thought i was being smart i mean
00:25:08
like
00:25:08
the closest i've seen is
00:25:10
vin number 006
00:25:12
so there could actually be more concept
00:25:14
ones out there but i feel like there's
00:25:16
probably more lucids out there and we
00:25:17
just haven't seen them i think uh john
00:25:19
rettinger said he's on a reserve list
00:25:21
he's in california and they've been
00:25:23
getting them sooner because it's a
00:25:24
california-based company so if you're
00:25:26
listening to this or if you're watching
00:25:27
this and you have one please get in
00:25:30
touch please get in touch
00:25:32
all right we also want to talk about uh
00:25:35
another kind of quirky story with the
00:25:37
mustang mock egt
00:25:39
i spent a couple days with it here
00:25:40
actually i didn't have a ton of time to
00:25:42
like really push it because it's just
00:25:44
sort of driving it around yeah observing
00:25:46
how new it feels it is the fastest
00:25:48
version of the mustang machi
00:25:50
um but there was an edmonds review of
00:25:53
the maki gt that discovered
00:25:56
that it is only able to ever put down
00:25:59
five consecutive seconds of full power
00:26:02
full power yeah and so they discovered
00:26:04
this because they're doing track tests
00:26:06
on it yeah versus the model y
00:26:08
performance because
00:26:09
similar sized cars both the like higher
00:26:12
end sportier performance models love
00:26:14
them a lot of praise for the maki like
00:26:16
in general like it's a very well selling
00:26:18
car
00:26:19
despite some weird quality control
00:26:21
issues which like every new car kind of
00:26:23
has at this point like
00:26:24
better suspension by a lot of people's
00:26:26
standards i think it drives just as well
00:26:28
if not better than the performance model
00:26:29
y the the guy in edmond said the overall
00:26:32
package
00:26:33
until he discovered that felt like a way
00:26:35
more cohesive track car right then the
00:26:38
model y now
00:26:39
it's a whole other debate about whether
00:26:41
people buying these cars are taking them
00:26:42
to traffic it's a crossover it's it's
00:26:44
whatever i don't even wanna it's fine
00:26:47
but
00:26:48
five consecutive seconds of power was
00:26:50
the limit according to ford because they
00:26:52
wanted to preserve battery life
00:26:54
how did they not build a button into the
00:26:56
software that lets you disable yeah like
00:26:58
track mode tracks that away yeah i don't
00:27:00
care about preserving battery life if
00:27:02
i'm on a track even if you are a track
00:27:05
like if you're someone who brings it to
00:27:06
the track you're probably still only on
00:27:07
the track
00:27:08
at most 10 of the total time you're ever
00:27:11
driving this car and that's probably
00:27:12
even being super conservative like
00:27:15
it's not going to like vastly
00:27:17
deteriorate this battery um yeah and you
00:27:20
know you're saying if there's a big
00:27:21
debate on how many people bring these to
00:27:22
the track i would argue more people
00:27:24
bring the g this the mustang
00:27:27
maki gt
00:27:29
to a track like you're probably buying
00:27:31
this because you want to bring it to a
00:27:32
track mustang already has the legacy
00:27:34
whether you want to put this in the
00:27:36
mustang family or not i know that's
00:27:38
super controversial
00:27:39
but if you are talking about a mustang
00:27:42
a car that is just known for performance
00:27:45
and known for people wanting to get the
00:27:46
most performance out of it and then you
00:27:48
also had a gt model like this is meant
00:27:50
for a track this is meant to get the
00:27:51
most power and then you just
00:27:53
cut it at five seconds just feels like a
00:27:56
slap in the face it was odd it was like
00:27:58
they were driving it and they would come
00:27:59
out of a straightaway and they'd get
00:28:00
five seconds straight and then they
00:28:02
would out of the next straightaway not
00:28:03
have to turn part and they'd wonder why
00:28:05
and then they'd wait a bit and then
00:28:07
they'd give it full power again but then
00:28:09
on the next straightaway they'd have
00:28:10
only like one second of power left out
00:28:12
of the straight and it was like what is
00:28:14
going on with this car so props to
00:28:16
edmund for like putting the car on a
00:28:18
track and actually finding that but yeah
00:28:19
ford just confirmed like oh yeah we're
00:28:20
just we're just doing that to save
00:28:21
battery life yeah ford if you're
00:28:23
listening you can push ota updates to
00:28:24
the ford machi i know you can
00:28:26
just add a button for track mode so that
00:28:28
you can not have your power nuked on
00:28:30
this fun car you've made that's my only
00:28:32
advice uh i dug the yellow that they
00:28:34
gave us it was like a papaya i
00:28:37
i think it's mclaren orange basically i
00:28:40
thought it was more yellow i felt like
00:28:41
it was more yellow a little brighter
00:28:43
yeah i think adam will put something up
00:28:45
on the screen and if i'm wrong you
00:28:47
better color correct it to look like i'm
00:28:48
right it's a good-looking car i kind of
00:28:51
dug it i liked it more than some of the
00:28:52
other colors we've had because the gt
00:28:54
also they put like the black grille on
00:28:55
the front even though it's plastic it
00:28:57
does look sportier it's got a little
00:28:58
more like finish just make it mac
00:29:00
matte not mac yeah make it matte make it
00:29:02
matte that would have been nice i mean
00:29:03
it's going to catch bugs no matter what
00:29:05
yes but it looks good cool maki gt's in
00:29:07
the wild by the way random fun fact i
00:29:10
think i said this on the last episode
00:29:11
the rivian is
00:29:13
faster
00:29:15
is just actually what is the maki gt
00:29:18
is your 0-60 and 3.5 that's what the
00:29:21
f-150 does right the riffian does in 3.0
00:29:25
what wait it's a truck ford make
00:29:28
even going past that how can ford make
00:29:30
an f-150 go 3.5 and not make the car
00:29:32
that's probably half the weight gord
00:29:34
makes both yeah i guess they just put
00:29:36
more power bigger bigger motors in the
00:29:38
f-150 yeah i mean i'm sure you're not
00:29:40
sport driving an f-150 it's just
00:29:42
hilarious that it goes that fast now i
00:29:43
want to put like f-150 motors in like
00:29:45
the mini cooper ev and watch it just
00:29:48
take like that's like the future of
00:29:50
that's the future of mods i think like
00:29:52
before because everyone would be like oh
00:29:54
i have a custom built engine in this
00:29:55
like sleeper chassis like you have no
00:29:57
idea how fast this like 68 mustang goes
00:29:59
now it's like yeah i put quad motors and
00:30:01
a huge battery in the hummer eevee
00:30:03
regular looking ev and it crushes what
00:30:06
was the hummer ev 0 to 60. too fast it
00:30:08
was awesome
00:30:10
under 10 seconds i think that's a safety
00:30:13
hazard that thing is it's already a
00:30:15
safety hazard that yeah i honestly think
00:30:17
that's going to cause more accidents
00:30:20
than any other car i just looked it up
00:30:22
and it's quoted at three seconds flat
00:30:26
that's faster than the arch audi e-tron
00:30:28
rs if i'm ever driving and i see a
00:30:30
hummer ev i'm taking an alternate route
00:30:33
i need my ways to direct me to avoid
00:30:35
hummer evs because nope
00:30:37
at no point will i trust that thing
00:30:39
anyone driving that on the road when
00:30:41
they deliver that i can't wait to see it
00:30:43
it's going to be wild
00:30:44
okay here's another weird weird one yeah
00:30:47
tesla model 3s and model ys right now
00:30:51
have been spotted being delivered
00:30:53
without wireless charging or the usbc
00:30:56
ports but not just like gone from the
00:30:58
car
00:30:59
the cutouts for the ports are still
00:31:01
there they're just delivering the car
00:31:03
without the ports and they're blaming
00:31:05
the chip shortage for not having the
00:31:07
part ready yet and they'll retrofit it
00:31:09
for free in the future but they're not
00:31:12
telling people
00:31:13
they're just giving you the car hey
00:31:15
here's your car would you like to accept
00:31:16
delivery uh it's missing the usb ports
00:31:20
which is like i have a picture here in
00:31:22
the dock which adam can put on the thing
00:31:24
but it's like
00:31:25
it's a usb-c port it's small
00:31:27
no one's like peering into it to make
00:31:29
sure the actual connector's there like
00:31:31
i'm sure people i would not doubt if
00:31:33
there are people who have this car that
00:31:34
have their their phone plugged in like
00:31:37
right now no idea and like not paying
00:31:39
attention and wondering like oh i must
00:31:41
have not connected it all the way after
00:31:42
my drive i mean wireless charging not
00:31:44
working i think that's one of my
00:31:45
favorite features of the car it just
00:31:46
sits right up in the front where the gps
00:31:48
would be and it just wireless charges
00:31:50
the phone so that's how the first big
00:31:52
post i saw about this happened was
00:31:53
somebody had it on the wireless charging
00:31:55
mat and i mean like we're at the point
00:31:57
where most people throw it down on
00:31:58
wireless charger and don't really
00:32:00
look to see if it's charging and then
00:32:02
they'll notice later so the guy in the
00:32:04
post
00:32:05
noticed that
00:32:06
noticed it again and then went to go
00:32:08
plug it in and i'm assuming just didn't
00:32:10
feel the snap or anything and then
00:32:12
realize it was just straight up missing
00:32:14
it yeah and then when they went to the
00:32:15
tesla service center the people there
00:32:17
said that
00:32:18
they will retrofit it in december it
00:32:20
will be free
00:32:22
but the fact that he had to go back to a
00:32:24
service center to guess that and then
00:32:26
there's a ton of comments in that reddit
00:32:28
thread and there's multiple people
00:32:30
reporting this that they're just and
00:32:32
like sure there is a chip shortage
00:32:34
it just seems insane to me to one even
00:32:37
deliver these
00:32:38
and to to
00:32:39
not say anything yeah if i was tesla
00:32:42
like okay put yourself in their shoes i
00:32:44
don't think you stop delivering the cars
00:32:46
but you have to tell people i think the
00:32:49
best way they could have done it while
00:32:50
still delivering is
00:32:52
hey you know we're having an issue with
00:32:53
the chip shortage you can still take
00:32:55
your delivery now you can wait to take
00:32:56
your delivery later if you do take it
00:32:58
now free supercharging for three months
00:33:00
and will retrofit in december well
00:33:02
here's the thing about you know keeping
00:33:04
cars around they don't have a lot of
00:33:06
space like they're building cars as fast
00:33:08
as they can and they're flying off the
00:33:11
shelves or however you want to phrase it
00:33:13
and so if they offer people the option
00:33:16
to refuse delivery because of it which i
00:33:17
guess they do
00:33:19
they're just going to sell the car to
00:33:19
someone else who will take it without
00:33:21
the ports so they're just like
00:33:22
they're just making the car without the
00:33:24
ports and it's like here do you want it
00:33:25
yes or no and if you say yes here you go
00:33:27
we'll retrofit it later if you say no
00:33:29
someone else will probably take it
00:33:30
without the ports it's really hard to
00:33:32
get these right now but
00:33:34
tell people tell people that they don't
00:33:35
have the
00:33:36
ports yeah so i just can't like
00:33:39
i know tesla gets a lot of
00:33:42
a lot of flack for a lot of things that
00:33:43
happens and they clearly like people try
00:33:45
and make stories out of things and
00:33:47
usually they're blown up this one feels
00:33:49
kind of like the opposite where i'm just
00:33:51
i can't imagine
00:33:52
a legacy car manufacturer doing this and
00:33:55
not having like
00:33:57
what is going on you're the like a lot
00:34:00
of weird queries i think if the f150
00:34:01
came out with this people would go
00:34:04
bananas it's really it's it's like uh
00:34:07
yeah no i it's it's weird it's really
00:34:09
strange a weird issue it's i feel like
00:34:11
you gotta at least offer like a little
00:34:13
something yeah tesla's tesla's also been
00:34:15
one of the companies that's like
00:34:16
been somewhat unaffected by these
00:34:19
shortages like they seem to be
00:34:21
delivering cars just fine like there's
00:34:22
lots of cars that need ships that are
00:34:24
just like oh we can't make as many
00:34:26
hyundai launchers as we thought we could
00:34:27
this year they all need the same chip
00:34:29
and there's a million of them yeah so
00:34:31
tesla's been like sort of cruising along
00:34:34
seemingly unaffected but it's like this
00:34:35
is a big deal like ports simple things
00:34:38
hard to get so that was sort of a wacky
00:34:41
story but yeah hopefully if you
00:34:43
if you have a model 3 or model y
00:34:45
pull over and check out whether your
00:34:47
ports work or not and if they don't
00:34:49
definitely uh
00:34:50
definitely get in touch with your
00:34:51
service center yeah get those ports for
00:34:53
sure okay so that's that's some of the
00:34:55
weirdest stories
00:34:56
let's get into
00:34:58
some new ev announcements that have come
00:35:00
out there's one from
00:35:02
let's see subaru subaru and nissan which
00:35:05
one do you want yes sir so both of them
00:35:06
are like their cars have been announced
00:35:08
but we didn't see much of them these are
00:35:09
like almost the full announcements for
00:35:11
it um i mean i'm going to pick subaru
00:35:14
let's talk super a little subaru fanboy
00:35:16
so bias warning although um
00:35:20
2023 subaru sultera yeah suv
00:35:23
yeah like crossover ish
00:35:26
to be honest i think it looks so
00:35:28
do i like it man you really just are uh
00:35:31
asking the the hard question right off
00:35:33
the bat
00:35:34
i don't think i can just say yes or no
00:35:36
on this interesting what do you want to
00:35:37
say so like right off the bat do you
00:35:39
like it
00:35:40
normally means design right yeah i like
00:35:42
how this looks
00:35:44
it's fine it's fine and then you gotta
00:35:46
look at like specs and price yeah so the
00:35:48
design i don't hate it but i don't love
00:35:50
it it's like pretty typical i feel like
00:35:53
the crosstrek and the impreza has kind
00:35:55
of been going this a little harder line
00:35:58
route my biggest complaint about it is
00:36:00
i've always loved
00:36:01
how much of a hatchback you get with
00:36:03
like an impreza or crosstrek as it goes
00:36:05
all the way to the trunk of the car
00:36:06
where this has that really really hard
00:36:08
slant kind of like a honda cross tour i
00:36:10
think it's called right don't love that
00:36:12
i think you're kind of losing space
00:36:14
um i wish you were a tad bigger but
00:36:17
again i don't hate it there's some
00:36:19
design things that aren't my favorite
00:36:21
but i kind of think the color was kind
00:36:23
of weird they announced it and also i
00:36:24
think maybe in a black or a gray or a
00:36:26
white it might look a lot better
00:36:28
um i don't mind it yeah that's fine at
00:36:31
all yeah it's there it's not a head
00:36:33
turner so then then the specs
00:36:36
we've got a starting price of 37 000.
00:36:39
where do you see that did i write that i
00:36:42
have that on car and driver
00:36:43
2023 subaru sotera starting at 37 000
00:36:46
wait what
00:36:47
hold on hold on this is
00:36:49
i did not have a price in here and i
00:36:51
have a lot of price speculation and is
00:36:53
this real this is estimated wait hold on
00:36:56
it says est let me let me see what they
00:36:58
mean by est so they think it'll start in
00:37:00
the high 30 000 this is not official
00:37:02
from subaru okay subaru hasn't announced
00:37:04
pricing yet okay so let's go with that's
00:37:07
fluttering let's go with that no pricing
00:37:09
but estimated somewhere in the high 30s
00:37:12
there's a spec we know is range right
00:37:14
let's yeah let's talk range let's talk
00:37:15
specs first and then uh
00:37:17
pricing i think i have like a lot of
00:37:19
thoughts on okay let's let's do that
00:37:21
okay so yeah
00:37:22
range i've been super pessimistic about
00:37:24
it i think in a previous episode i guess
00:37:27
240 miles
00:37:28
and i even thought that may have been on
00:37:31
the high side instead
00:37:33
we have a single motor and a dual motor
00:37:36
the
00:37:37
single motor has 329 miles of range and
00:37:40
the dual motor has 286 miles of range
00:37:44
now just to be clear here this is wltc
00:37:46
standard which is a standard in japan
00:37:48
and generally is
00:37:50
a little overrated versus an epa rating
00:37:53
so the epa rating will probably knock
00:37:54
that down a bit but we're still talking
00:37:57
at least three 300 miles of range okay
00:38:00
on the single motor single motor like
00:38:02
lower performance okay yeah yeah which
00:38:05
blue blew my expectations out of the
00:38:07
water i mean we've seen way too many
00:38:09
legacy car manufacturers come in making
00:38:12
a v with a
00:38:14
abysmal range
00:38:16
i usually will see here's a new ev it's
00:38:18
available now it has 210 miles of range
00:38:20
or i'll say i'll see here's a new ev
00:38:23
it'll have 315 miles of range it's
00:38:25
coming out in 2024 which is like oh
00:38:28
that's a good number but it's gonna be
00:38:30
three years too late which is when we'll
00:38:31
all expect even higher numbers yeah so
00:38:34
to have a new solterra assumingly coming
00:38:36
out somewhat soon and with 300 miles of
00:38:39
range is pretty good i'm very very
00:38:41
excited for that i think that's awesome
00:38:43
awesome
00:38:44
um let's see it says it supports dc fast
00:38:47
charging up to 150 kilowatts they didn't
00:38:50
say about how long it would take to
00:38:51
charge your battery but
00:38:53
we're lucky here and this is built on
00:38:54
the same platform as the bz4x which is
00:38:57
from toyota because they partnered with
00:38:58
this got it they look very similar bz4x
00:39:01
and toyota claim
00:39:02
that will charge 30 minutes to 80
00:39:05
capacity so i mean we're looking at
00:39:06
pretty standard about a 70 kilowatt hour
00:39:08
battery if if you know the network
00:39:10
actually turns on so that's always
00:39:12
something yeah
00:39:13
question yes um we have subaru talking
00:39:15
about their x mode which is a pretty
00:39:16
standard company-wide thing it's an
00:39:18
all-wheel drive control system and you
00:39:20
know subaru is known for their all-wheel
00:39:21
drive that'll only be in the dual motor
00:39:24
i'm assuming so i mean right it didn't
00:39:26
specifically say that but i can only
00:39:27
imagine okay um
00:39:29
so when it comes to
00:39:30
i have like two main gripes or questions
00:39:33
i guess that aren't answered quite here
00:39:35
um
00:39:36
number one is price
00:39:38
if we're pricing this out
00:39:42
40 000 feels like kind of the sweet spot
00:39:45
of
00:39:46
now that we're seeing the model 3 creep
00:39:47
up in price to like 46
00:39:49
if we're talking about a car
00:39:52
kind of
00:39:53
similar to it i think the sole terra is
00:39:54
a little bigger clearly does not have
00:39:56
the performance that the model 3 does
00:39:59
but
00:40:00
six thousand dollars cheaper
00:40:02
and most likely we'll have the tax break
00:40:03
because it's a new company doing evs
00:40:05
that seems pretty awesome and similar
00:40:07
range i mean like the main thing we're
00:40:08
talking here is range right when we're
00:40:10
comparing
00:40:11
i think forty thousand could get quite a
00:40:14
few people to make the choice if they're
00:40:16
between
00:40:17
a model three and a soul terra okay
00:40:19
if some the thing is is like subaru is
00:40:22
very well priced for a lot of their cars
00:40:24
um at least i think so and i do think a
00:40:26
lot of people think so i bought my
00:40:28
impreza in 2013 for 21 all-wheel drive
00:40:31
great car crosstreks enforcers and stuff
00:40:34
kind of start around like 26 which is
00:40:36
great great pricing so 40 000 is a big
00:40:39
jump there if this could somehow be at
00:40:40
35 000 i i'll buy it i will 100 buy it
00:40:44
if this is at 35 000.35 you're in i
00:40:46
don't think it will that would be the
00:40:48
starting base price probably at best yes
00:40:50
and i kind of have wonder price wise on
00:40:53
which model will be which but um
00:40:55
i'm worried though that this will be
00:40:56
closer to like 45 and then i think it's
00:41:00
they will only get sales for subaru fans
00:41:03
you are not gonna have the person going
00:41:05
to it over the model 3 when you're at
00:41:07
the same price yeah and maybe this is
00:41:09
people cross-shopping i don't know if
00:41:11
it'll be model 3 or model y more i guess
00:41:12
crossovers model y which is a little
00:41:14
more pricey but when you're at the same
00:41:17
price as model y you have to offer
00:41:20
somewhat the same stuff to be considered
00:41:22
if you're priced above model y you have
00:41:24
to be better at something yeah which
00:41:27
seems like just the subaru things and
00:41:30
being a subaru and having like maybe
00:41:32
more range or sorry maybe more storage
00:41:34
or uh crosstrek type features model y
00:41:37
well the hard thing is if you compare it
00:41:39
to model y because it's a crossover this
00:41:41
is like a weird this feels like the at
00:41:43
least by the pictures i haven't seen
00:41:45
full size but it looks like the lower
00:41:46
end of like a size of a crossover
00:41:49
whereas like model y feels like it's
00:41:51
closer to like compact suv and it's this
00:41:53
really really confusing but model y is
00:41:57
58 starting i think
00:41:59
so like
00:42:00
i
00:42:01
no way sultaira's
00:42:03
that so i like kind of want to compare
00:42:05
it to model three more but yeah you do
00:42:06
get some more room probably than a model
00:42:08
three yeah it's in a weird spot so if
00:42:10
you undercut if you undercut it you just
00:42:12
got to do a couple things as well
00:42:13
obviously it doesn't have a supercharger
00:42:15
network but that's an advantage that
00:42:17
they can take if you're cross-shopping
00:42:18
model y and soltera i think zoltara is
00:42:20
going to have a great chance even at 45
00:42:23
to you know if you are not a tesla fan
00:42:25
or you're not a subaru fan you are just
00:42:27
looking for an ev around that size i
00:42:30
think it will split it pretty well which
00:42:31
is all all
00:42:33
companies need to do now is split the
00:42:35
price split the difference for a tesla
00:42:37
to that um if you're looking for a model
00:42:39
three or soltera i think the sole terror
00:42:41
has to be
00:42:42
35 to 40 to really sway the model 3
00:42:45
buyer over
00:42:46
to that for saving enough money let's
00:42:48
let's make a bet over under
00:42:51
would you take over under
00:42:53
or sorry would you guess that the
00:42:54
solterra's announced price for the base
00:42:56
model will be over under 39
00:43:00
over
00:43:01
okay i'll take that bet you'll go under
00:43:03
i'm hoping i'm wrong or i'm hoping i'm
00:43:05
right and it is under but now see if we
00:43:07
really want to make this bet interesting
00:43:09
if i win you buy me a solterra and if i
00:43:12
lose i'll buy myself a soul terror
00:43:14
because that sounds like a good that
00:43:15
sounds like a good bet i don't know if
00:43:16
i'm gonna agree to it right now but it's
00:43:18
a solid um but so now my next big thing
00:43:21
kind of loops into pricing and that is
00:43:24
i'm confused at what is going to be the
00:43:27
more expensive version of this what is
00:43:29
going to be the base because
00:43:31
in every single eevee
00:43:34
range is like the number one priority
00:43:36
right yep now
00:43:38
subaru is known for all-wheel drive
00:43:40
their thing is that essentially every
00:43:42
car comes with all-wheel drive super
00:43:44
great price point for it
00:43:46
you go to colorado and like 90 of the
00:43:48
cars in the shopping the shopping mall
00:43:50
parking lot are going to be a subaru
00:43:51
because of the all-wheel drive yeah
00:43:53
driving snow all that stuff yeah
00:43:55
so if you are now buying a subaru ev
00:43:58
what is your choice are you prioritizing
00:44:00
all-wheel drive or are you prioritizing
00:44:02
range because the all-wheel drive is
00:44:04
about 50 miles less range according to
00:44:06
wltc standard the single motor will be
00:44:08
cheaper the single motor with longer
00:44:10
range will be cheaper and the extra
00:44:12
motor which costs a lot more which has
00:44:14
better performance but has all-wheel
00:44:16
drive will be more expensive despite
00:44:17
lower range
00:44:19
real quick
00:44:20
what you're saying is correct but like
00:44:23
the
00:44:23
the single motor has a higher horsepower
00:44:26
per motor
00:44:27
whereas the dual motor yeah there's they
00:44:30
are technically each motor is less
00:44:32
performance but the total is larger
00:44:34
exactly definitely i believe that that
00:44:37
base model will be the single motor
00:44:39
front wheel drive with a longer range
00:44:41
because that gets you longer range the
00:44:44
all-wheel drive one will cost more it
00:44:46
will have better performance because of
00:44:47
the higher overall power and all-wheel
00:44:49
drive but
00:44:50
it will have slightly less range
00:44:52
interest um
00:44:54
man if the if single motor could be 35
00:44:56
and dual motor could be 40 that would be
00:44:58
really awesome yeah also dual motor
00:45:00
performance though is not going to be
00:45:02
anything close to a model three no no no
00:45:04
no like we're all i think i hope we're
00:45:06
all on the same page that we're not
00:45:07
comparing it like that yeah um but yeah
00:45:10
i'm excited well the other one that i'm
00:45:12
less excited about
00:45:14
but it exists so i'm happy about it i
00:45:16
think it's important still yeah is
00:45:17
nissan's upcoming electric suv
00:45:20
so nissan is able to claim that they are
00:45:22
a leader in the ev space because of how
00:45:24
long the leaf has been around sure i'll
00:45:27
give you that so now in 2023 they're
00:45:29
going to drop what's called the aria
00:45:31
a-r-i-y-a it'll start at 47
00:45:35
and it will have
00:45:37
did they say the range you can see
00:45:40
about 300 miles of range so yeah 300
00:45:42
miles of range for 47k you can go up in
00:45:45
performance and also up in price there's
00:45:47
a 60k option yeah with 265 miles of
00:45:50
range but a little more power
00:45:52
it looks
00:45:54
uh fine okay if you were already buying
00:45:56
a nissan rogue this this looks like a
00:45:58
nissan yeah you know what this looks
00:46:00
like it looks like an eevee nissan which
00:46:02
is fine it's i don't like it you've
00:46:04
brought up a pricing of subarus in the
00:46:06
past this is an expensive nissan
00:46:09
60k for a nissan is a big ass yeah can i
00:46:12
look up what a nissan rogue is sure yeah
00:46:14
like a nissan rogue starts at 26. yeah
00:46:18
and i'm i believe
00:46:20
i just want to make sure i'm on the
00:46:21
murano's 32 the rogue is 26.
00:46:25
it's not is there 24 to 26 like there's
00:46:28
not a lot of brand new 60 000 nissans
00:46:31
yeah this will start at 47 which is you
00:46:33
know still pretty premium for a nissan
00:46:36
yeah the leaf if i talk about the leaf
00:46:38
anymore i'm getting sad but like they
00:46:40
did they did hop on that early and lots
00:46:43
of people have leafs because they don't
00:46:44
have long commutes it had like a
00:46:46
100 mile range at best and it was like
00:46:48
all right you can drive this as your
00:46:49
commuter car back and forth and like
00:46:50
have a totally good time never pay for
00:46:52
gas again great but when we talk about
00:46:54
like the inspiring like let's replace
00:46:56
every car on the road with an electric
00:46:58
version you need a couple more versions
00:47:00
than just a leaf so this is something
00:47:02
else i do they're accepting deposits i
00:47:05
don't know if this is going to start
00:47:06
getting cross shopped with model y it's
00:47:08
47 so it's cheaper yeah there are two
00:47:10
main things i have out of this one's
00:47:12
good ones makes no sense okay 47 000
00:47:16
for
00:47:16
this
00:47:17
buy pictures this looks bigger than like
00:47:19
a sole tara so i think this is a direct
00:47:20
competitor yeah the model y yeah 300
00:47:23
miles of range is also meant at 10 000
00:47:25
cheaper
00:47:26
there's def they're gonna sway some
00:47:28
people okay
00:47:29
yeah i think that's really cool again
00:47:32
really happy that we see another 300
00:47:34
mile range i'm so glad we're actually
00:47:35
seeing these legacy car manufacturers
00:47:37
like
00:47:38
putting real miles on their range the
00:47:40
thing i don't get is who on earth wants
00:47:43
a performance
00:47:45
nissan rogue ev essentially i don't get
00:47:48
why you'd spend an extra like 15k yeah
00:47:51
the performance version interesting it
00:47:52
doesn't look like a sporty car it
00:47:54
doesn't look like something that you're
00:47:56
going to go
00:47:57
drag race or even just like i guess
00:48:00
that's the thing about evs is they all
00:48:03
naturally are able to offer performance
00:48:05
and instant torque and the base model
00:48:07
will have that
00:48:08
yeah
00:48:09
true like enough for what you need so in
00:48:12
main in normal everyday driving like the
00:48:15
cv thing the best thing about it is
00:48:16
merging onto a highway like you don't
00:48:18
feel stuck yeah but the base model will
00:48:20
have that like it'll feel better than a
00:48:22
regular nissan rogue which i by the way
00:48:24
if you haven't noticed i'm comparing the
00:48:26
rogue to this thing because they look
00:48:27
very similar i just don't get why you'd
00:48:29
pay an extra 15 000 for this like
00:48:31
performance version of this there's a
00:48:32
lot of questions that we didn't think
00:48:34
had there were like solutions without a
00:48:36
problem like who wants a crossover
00:48:39
mustang ev but here we are and like this
00:48:42
might be another one of those where
00:48:44
we're like looking over the obvious
00:48:46
answer of like oh yeah i've always
00:48:47
wanted like a faster like i love my
00:48:49
nissan and i love this the ui for some
00:48:52
reason but i really wanted an ev version
00:48:54
with more storage like here we are yeah
00:48:56
i don't know
00:48:57
there are nissans that people mod and
00:48:59
like to do stuff it's just
00:49:01
as far as i know it's not the rook it's
00:49:02
a smaller group if you have a modded
00:49:03
nissan rogue
00:49:05
show send us some videos or pictures
00:49:07
because i'd love to see it but i'm i'm
00:49:09
not really sure that those really exist
00:49:11
but like you know good point here
00:49:13
ten thousand dollars cheaper than a
00:49:15
model y
00:49:16
for the people who don't care about the
00:49:17
model y performance and who are are able
00:49:20
to
00:49:21
you know
00:49:22
not have to use the tesla supercharging
00:49:24
network right ten thousand dollars is a
00:49:26
big big price jump price difference so
00:49:28
yeah so we'll see next to your car so
00:49:30
that's that's it for evs thanks for
00:49:33
sticking along with our rambling i i
00:49:34
thought all of those were pretty fun
00:49:36
pretty interesting even pretty important
00:49:38
yeah tv podcast exactly
00:49:40
wave can we label this one where the ve
00:49:43
and wave is switched
00:49:45
yeah switch the ev now it's the waveform
00:49:48
the waveform we can do that for april
00:49:50
fools or something but um i just have
00:49:51
like one psa i want to end this on every
00:49:54
year we talk about black friday a little
00:49:56
bit but we always talk about it on
00:49:57
friday
00:49:58
where it's too late so we're just gonna
00:50:00
do our little psa if we're looking
00:50:02
forward to anything but like
00:50:04
i think the main thing i always tell
00:50:06
people on black friday is
00:50:08
go into it with a plan we all are tech
00:50:10
heads here we all want to get tech
00:50:12
cheaper we all know tech gets cheaper on
00:50:14
black friday
00:50:15
but stop going on amazon or best buy and
00:50:18
just like buying things because they're
00:50:20
on sale do your research
00:50:22
pick something that you really want hope
00:50:24
that that goes on sale
00:50:26
buy it on sale yeah going to whatever
00:50:28
retailer and buying what's on sale is
00:50:30
how it's designed for you you should go
00:50:33
in with your own plan and then buy
00:50:34
things also i'll give a little psa if
00:50:37
you're holiday shopping the chip
00:50:38
shortage and supply shortages are very
00:50:40
real so if you are not yet getting stuff
00:50:43
for gifts for family or whatever think
00:50:45
about that earlier than usual
00:50:47
as in like right use your pride pauses
00:50:52
yeah that's it that's it for my psa
00:50:54
but yeah i uh
00:50:56
i actually with a new house and stuff i
00:50:59
do have some i
00:51:00
i'm ready for black friday i haven't
00:51:02
bought anything for a really long time
00:51:03
so you're gonna be part of the like the
00:51:05
crowd running for the tv section no no
00:51:08
no online
00:51:10
on my couch in my slippers under a
00:51:12
blanket i don't do this i'm looking for
00:51:14
a new gaming monitor because i haven't
00:51:15
upgraded since probably black friday
00:51:18
like five years ago okay really excited
00:51:20
about that i was ready to look for the
00:51:22
logitech g pro super light but now they
00:51:24
just came out with the logitech g303
00:51:27
wireless which i ordered already that's
00:51:28
the collab with shroud
00:51:30
i'm so excited that was like my favorite
00:51:32
that was my first gaming mouse i had two
00:51:35
or three of them then they discontinued
00:51:36
them and i was
00:51:38
very very sad
00:51:40
whatever that won't come up and just
00:51:41
like some smart home stuff there's this
00:51:43
really good tp uh
