00:00:00
hey Runners only with dime Harley
00:00:03
sitting here in an office
00:00:05
at the back of his gym
00:00:07
shame Cameron the box there morning mate
00:00:10
morning brother morning thank you bloody
00:00:12
good to see you bloody good to see you
00:00:13
I'll tell you what um something that
00:00:15
cracked me up about you you and me we
00:00:16
sort of know each other I suppose
00:00:18
reasonably well through interviews over
00:00:19
the years we're boxing and dancing with
00:00:20
the stars and whatever yeah
00:00:22
um I think you've got no idea what my
00:00:24
podcast is about do you yeah no no no so
00:00:26
I just message you and you said you said
00:00:28
yes no extra questions no what's it
00:00:31
about what's the angle yeah okay so the
00:00:33
podcast is called Runners only with dom
00:00:35
Harvey okay and it's um because you know
00:00:37
I'm passionate about my running you are
00:00:38
so that's um yeah this sort of got a
00:00:40
running theme to it and uh I I don't
00:00:42
know what your relationship with running
00:00:44
is like now but I'm guessing as a
00:00:46
professional boxer
00:00:47
um it's definitely like you know part of
00:00:49
your part of your makeup as part of
00:00:50
training for that yeah it is it is um
00:00:53
we're getting nice get it nice and
00:00:54
closer with um you know with the boxing
00:00:57
um and with the running it's you know
00:00:59
and I was a bit heavier too when I when
00:01:01
I when I was boxing I was sort of around
00:01:02
105 kilos so I still struggle with shin
00:01:04
splints and stuff like that because he's
00:01:06
just got to push through and and it is
00:01:08
what is so I never really liked the
00:01:10
running you know because all I could
00:01:12
just imagine was shin splints every day
00:01:14
I run her you know or I used to love
00:01:15
doing you know oh I do change it you
00:01:18
know otherwise I do Sprints wind Sprints
00:01:20
and stuff like that you know but you
00:01:21
just had to be done because it was
00:01:22
really the running you know obviously
00:01:23
got the wind Sprints that's really good
00:01:24
for your
00:01:26
um you know so your your anaerobic
00:01:27
thresholders so to speak and then you've
00:01:29
got your aerobic running which is well
00:01:31
for me running for running five to ten
00:01:33
cases a big run for me yeah I've been
00:01:34
being that way but but now I do a lot
00:01:37
more running now you know well you do
00:01:38
I'm a bit lighter yeah I'm a bit lighter
00:01:40
and I actually I don't mind just you
00:01:42
know like I said I'm not not a buddy
00:01:44
running like you man like so 5Ks I'm
00:01:46
pretty happy with a 5K run you know and
00:01:47
I don't get any shin splints and I'm and
00:01:49
I'm happy you know but it's just good
00:01:51
for um good for your head I do a lot of
00:01:53
thinking when I'm running to be honest
00:01:55
mate like um I think you know my brain
00:01:58
doesn't stop anyway but it's just good
00:01:59
when I run and I think about things like
00:02:01
man you know that'd be good to talk
00:02:03
about this you know because I'm doing my
00:02:04
little Yarns and stuff like that with my
00:02:05
cool cups at home and
00:02:07
and just all sorts you know think about
00:02:08
the business and what I want to do and
00:02:09
what I want to create and you know um so
00:02:12
yeah there's so many benefits for me for
00:02:14
running too oh yeah clears the head over
00:02:16
there the um I bang on about the yeah
00:02:18
the mental health benefits as much as
00:02:20
the physical it's um really really good
00:02:21
for that and um yeah so much of you
00:02:23
mentioned there we want to talk about
00:02:25
because um uh I I find what you've done
00:02:28
post boxing inspirational like you're um
00:02:30
you're a businessman you're an
00:02:31
entrepreneur
00:02:33
um you've got your gem Shan Cameron Jim
00:02:34
which is a ballsy move setting up your
00:02:36
own gym especially when there's like a
00:02:38
gym on every corner in Auckland
00:02:40
um you've got you you counter punch
00:02:41
label which does boxing gear and things
00:02:43
yeah I mean um a lot of boxes they they
00:02:46
end the game and then they don't do
00:02:48
smart stuff with their money but it
00:02:49
seems like um you're doing okay yeah
00:02:52
thank you mate I appreciate that it's
00:02:54
it's like um I'm I'm one of those guys
00:02:57
and it probably it hinders me sometimes
00:02:58
because I'm I'm never content I'm never
00:03:01
never happy you know um in some ways um
00:03:04
but but at the same time I drive I'm a
00:03:05
driver I know I know what I'm after I
00:03:08
know where I want to get to you know I
00:03:09
do whatever it takes to get there you
00:03:11
know and like you pointed out and you
00:03:12
know I've got the gym I've heard the gym
00:03:13
for a while now and Jim's like I said
00:03:15
Jim's like the areas there on every kill
00:03:17
every corner you know so yeah and you're
00:03:19
up against this one just over the road
00:03:20
from where you are like a Snap Fitness
00:03:21
or a jet or whatever it is that's right
00:03:23
yeah you're up against those franchises
00:03:24
shut up against it exactly so um but but
00:03:26
you know hey we've been in the game for
00:03:28
a long time you know so we know we're up
00:03:29
against
00:03:31
um but yeah yeah counter punch the
00:03:33
boxing product that's that that's
00:03:35
something that I started up probably
00:03:36
about five years ago uh and off
00:03:38
counterpunch then I run counter punch
00:03:40
coaching courses which an accredited
00:03:42
accredited coaching courses that I
00:03:43
designed up you know obviously my
00:03:44
background in boxing and coaching and
00:03:46
understanding that and I really enjoy
00:03:47
that I travel around the country with um
00:03:50
delivering that course you know so I can
00:03:52
pass people or fail People based on
00:03:53
their ability
00:03:55
um but it's about it's around growing
00:03:56
their growing the sport in terms of the
00:03:58
knowledge yeah I always say knowledge is
00:04:00
power so the more knowledgeable we are
00:04:01
as a personal trainer because those are
00:04:03
the people that I'm targeting personal
00:04:04
trainers they want to understand how to
00:04:06
hold Pairs and different comedies
00:04:08
combinations that flow that don't you
00:04:10
know there's combinations that don't
00:04:11
work and just everything from the
00:04:12
footwork and the knowledge that I've
00:04:13
learned over the years yeah I'm not
00:04:15
saying I know everything but I know a
00:04:16
little bit you know I've been in the
00:04:17
game so I do love that aspect of um of
00:04:20
the coaching side you know so um and uh
00:04:23
I've got so many bloody things on uh
00:04:25
sometimes that that are too many but
00:04:27
anyway you know I've just just launched
00:04:29
uh my app uh counterpunch fitness app so
00:04:32
um that was launched before Christmas
00:04:33
and um
00:04:36
it's like this interview is just me just
00:04:38
talking about the things the things I've
00:04:40
got going on but maybe you just start
00:04:41
talking no that's right no but it seems
00:04:43
it seems to me like um even though it's
00:04:45
a completely different skills to being a
00:04:47
good boxer to being a good businessman
00:04:48
but the uh like the drive and um I
00:04:51
suppose the energy and the passion that
00:04:52
you had in sport uh you've sort of
00:04:54
transferred those skills to outside of
00:04:56
the Ring yeah yeah yeah yeah I have you
00:04:58
know like say um
00:05:00
yeah you only get I'm a big believer I
00:05:03
always say this always say you only get
00:05:05
out what you put in right you know so if
00:05:07
you only put five minutes in you can't
00:05:08
expect to get 30 20 minutes out you know
00:05:10
like it's just it is what it is you know
00:05:12
and I'm pretty real with a lot of the
00:05:14
people that I that I train and want to
00:05:15
get results with in terms of health and
00:05:17
fitness
00:05:17
you know have you stuck to your meal
00:05:19
plan oh oh well clearly yeah you're not
00:05:21
getting the results because you're
00:05:22
putting the hard work you know it's
00:05:24
simple there's no there's no sugar
00:05:25
coating hey you know you either put the
00:05:26
work in you get the results and you get
00:05:28
the results and that's the same with
00:05:29
your boxing or in business you know you
00:05:31
can't expect to have a thriving business
00:05:33
that's going to generate all this money
00:05:34
if you don't put any working you know so
00:05:36
simple you know so um but I tell you
00:05:39
what man I tell you what I like boxing
00:05:41
is much easier than running a business
00:05:43
much easier than running a business oh
00:05:46
heck yeah take me back to boxing any day
00:05:48
all right we we yeah listen there's so
00:05:50
much I want to unpack with you there's
00:05:52
so much so much to chat about first of
00:05:53
all um like what what's what sports did
00:05:56
you play growing up yeah yeah uh when I
00:05:59
grew up in a little place called tiny
00:06:00
little which is 50 minute driving then
00:06:02
from Gisborne
00:06:03
Country Town uh mum and dad live in the
00:06:06
country they worked on a few Farms
00:06:09
um my my goals and drives and
00:06:11
aspirations from a young boy was to be a
00:06:13
Shepherd to be a Shepherd ride a horse
00:06:14
to work every day and that's what I did
00:06:16
so I left the school uh as soon as I
00:06:18
turned 15 because you're allowed to
00:06:20
leave at 15 of their time and I had a
00:06:22
full-time job offered a full-time job
00:06:24
before so I knew where I was going so I
00:06:25
worked on a farm just up the road it was
00:06:27
7 000 Acre Farm
00:06:28
I just loved it loved everything about
00:06:31
it and already had five sheep dogs I had
00:06:33
three horses and that's all I did that
00:06:34
worked every day from 15 you know the
00:06:36
the more work love working love
00:06:38
everything and everything I do always
00:06:40
want to be the best at it yeah well I
00:06:41
become the best at it it doesn't matter
00:06:43
but like in my head I want to be the
00:06:44
best yeah I'm very competitive and that
00:06:46
way you know and at 15 I want to be to
00:06:48
be the best at everything I did without
00:06:50
without you know big shoulders or
00:06:52
anything like that just me I just just I
00:06:53
just grind just said nothing very quiet
00:06:55
very observed but I just I just did my
00:06:57
thing you know uh and then then I I
00:06:59
didn't place so I played rugby just
00:07:01
nipple at school
00:07:03
and then um I went to England so so I
00:07:05
worked on three sheep stations then I
00:07:07
was 19. I had a bad run run with my
00:07:09
Sheepdogs where one had died another
00:07:11
woman to nearly died they must eating
00:07:13
some rat poison and that was the turning
00:07:14
point so if you're thinking about
00:07:15
turning points in your life because if
00:07:17
that hadn't happened I would not be here
00:07:18
sitting with you talking about my career
00:07:20
unboxing there's no way yeah I'd still
00:07:23
be farming because if those dogs hadn't
00:07:25
have died I wouldn't have gone how old
00:07:26
am I going to England for to do an OE
00:07:28
because I knew about my you know people
00:07:30
that I knew that went to England to do
00:07:32
the OE yeah you know um and so within a
00:07:35
month I handed my notice I said well so
00:07:37
I'm going away I'll be back in six
00:07:39
months you know and I found some of my
00:07:40
dogs out and I plan to come back and
00:07:42
carry on farming I'm in England I'm
00:07:44
playing rugby
00:07:45
and I was watching some boxing on TV one
00:07:47
day I wouldn't mind giving that sport a
00:07:49
go my grandfather used the box back in
00:07:50
the 1920s in Wellington always inspired
00:07:52
by his boxing stories
00:07:54
talking about another Turning Point
00:07:55
another turning point was that watching
00:07:57
a fighter in the UK Prince Naseem
00:07:58
Hammond is watching my final game man I
00:08:00
want to give that sport to go why did
00:08:01
you what because I I I like watching
00:08:04
boxing on TV but I never think um yeah
00:08:06
Tyson Fury looks good I might get ready
00:08:08
though why well what makes you think
00:08:10
yeah that you'd be um good at it yeah
00:08:12
I'm I'm I don't I'm one of those guys I
00:08:15
don't know I so deep down I always
00:08:17
thought I was a bit of a tough guy you
00:08:18
know but I was really really quiet but
00:08:21
really quite really observed never spoke
00:08:22
to anyone I never spoke just one thing
00:08:24
but I knew I was suffer because I always
00:08:25
back myself but I never you know and
00:08:27
saying that the fights I did have was
00:08:28
all around
00:08:29
um alcohol oh yeah Pub rules just drunk
00:08:32
you know and just you know I never have
00:08:34
a fight of October right you know but it
00:08:36
was just I just back myself and they
00:08:38
always loved listening to my
00:08:39
grandfather's boxing stories so I was
00:08:40
watching some boxes on TV like I said
00:08:42
and then within a few days I found
00:08:43
boxing so my first fight of the week my
00:08:45
20th birthday
00:08:51
yeah so so um well you must have been
00:08:54
quite good because um it was 2002 that
00:08:56
you were at the Commonwealth Games yeah
00:08:58
four years after taking up the sport
00:09:00
yeah and it is some 20 quite a late age
00:09:03
to be starting oh very yeah very yeah
00:09:05
yeah very yeah so I trained for three
00:09:06
months and then I had my first fight and
00:09:08
then you know within a year and a half I
00:09:10
was ranked number three in England and
00:09:11
then a few more what two more years
00:09:13
after that or whatever it was then I
00:09:14
come home to New Zealand to qualify for
00:09:16
the Commonwealth Games team went to went
00:09:18
back to Manchester once I qualified and
00:09:20
and won a bronze medal at the
00:09:21
Commonwealth Games that seems like quite
00:09:23
a fast um apprenticeship uh to me were
00:09:25
you naturally good or did you just like
00:09:27
work your ass off in those four years
00:09:29
um I think a bit of both right but one
00:09:31
thing I did do I worked my ass off yeah
00:09:33
yeah I'm all about it I'm an extras man
00:09:35
yeah like like if coach says do this
00:09:37
I'll go eat whatever I'll do it double
00:09:38
that right you know so
00:09:40
um and I still do that now you know um
00:09:42
it's always looking for those little
00:09:43
marginal game yeah yeah yeah because
00:09:45
because I started late and and and when
00:09:48
I started late so a lot of coaches were
00:09:49
going oh he's a good boy I can hear them
00:09:51
over talking you know he's a good boy
00:09:53
but he won't make it he started too late
00:09:54
oh he's a good boy he goes right you
00:09:57
know he's put some good talent but but
00:09:59
he's um he started a bit late I'm
00:10:01
thinking of my head I'll show you I'll
00:10:03
show you what I can do you know and that
00:10:04
was just like I went from like I said
00:10:06
around the drinking I was drinking in
00:10:08
the UK because they'd love to drink over
00:10:09
there you know five six nights a week
00:10:11
you know but socially meet down down the
00:10:13
corner for a few drinks and I went from
00:10:15
drinking like five six nights a week to
00:10:16
not drinking for three four six months
00:10:18
at a time and just fully focused just
00:10:20
trained every single day and like I say
00:10:22
from from starting the week of my 20th
00:10:24
birthday to a year and a half later
00:10:26
ranked number three in England and it
00:10:27
just it just it just even when I get
00:10:29
ranked in and win titles and stuff like
00:10:31
that I just you know there's nothing I
00:10:33
haven't achieved nothing I haven't
00:10:34
achieved nothing and then just keep I
00:10:36
just keep going like that because I'm
00:10:37
never content I'm never can hear you
00:10:39
know finally finally get a world title
00:10:41
shot ah I need to win it I need a winner
00:10:43
you know so but and that's the same for
00:10:45
me with business yeah if I've certain
00:10:47
goals that I want to hit financially I
00:10:48
hit it and I'm gonna say I'm not happy
00:10:49
I'm not happy I want more yeah I don't
00:10:51
know why it's bad you know in some ways
00:10:53
it's bad because my partner at home just
00:10:55
goes man you're such a buddy sometimes
00:10:58
you're a negative bastard do you
00:10:59
sometimes take a moment to like like
00:11:00
pause and reflect on what you've done
00:11:02
like um I don't know this is your
00:11:04
workplace that I'm in but I walk in the
00:11:06
I walked in the door for the first time
00:11:07
and there's a boxing ring there and
00:11:09
there's loud music and there's people
00:11:10
doing classes and your name's up on the
00:11:12
wall yeah and I think [ __ ] that's pretty
00:11:14
cool yeah I mean I'm sure you had that
00:11:16
moment when you opened the doors for the
00:11:17
first time but do you ever walk in and
00:11:19
think I'm I'm doing okay the kid's doing
00:11:21
all right yeah
00:11:23
yeah I I don't I think I think about the
00:11:26
things that need to be done you know
00:11:27
other things that need to be done
00:11:30
someone didn't bloody clean that or you
00:11:32
know nah nah nah I I'd like to and I'm
00:11:36
not saying no because I want to be some
00:11:37
hero or anything like that it's just
00:11:39
like
00:11:40
no that's not really in my vocabulary
00:11:41
around it I wish I wish I did and I need
00:11:44
to take a moment and I I'm working on
00:11:46
that in terms of you know personal
00:11:47
growth and and that like
00:11:49
um being content with some of the things
00:11:51
that I've got you know because I've got
00:11:52
some cool things
00:11:54
um going on and
00:11:56
I I can talk to my my partner and I
00:11:59
talked to my brother and I just go I
00:12:00
need to be happy with what I've got you
00:12:02
know
00:12:02
um so so that's personal growth yeah
00:12:04
from short my stuff I'm working on now
00:12:06
anyway you know so never stop learning
00:12:08
it's one thing absolutely and um so so
00:12:10
the Commonwealth Games where's that
00:12:12
middle now does that something that
00:12:13
means a lot yeah yes yes it remains a
00:12:15
lot to me it's framed up it's at home
00:12:16
it's in yeah in a room where there's
00:12:19
other stuff and that in there that's
00:12:21
pretty I've seen stuff yeah it's pretty
00:12:23
cool so what happened there were you
00:12:24
were you it was 20 years ago so I can't
00:12:26
remember were you were you lucky to get
00:12:28
the bronze or were you unlucky not to
00:12:30
get a gold or silver yeah yeah so that's
00:12:33
a good that's a good story so my first
00:12:35
fight I thought the Nigerian champ and
00:12:36
then I uh I beat him I stopped them in
00:12:38
round two and then the second fight I
00:12:41
fought the
00:12:42
Jamaican champ and I stop them in round
00:12:46
four
00:12:47
and then I come up against the Canadian
00:12:49
in the semi-finals so so by the time I
00:12:51
was guaranteed a bronze medal you know
00:12:53
just because the way the draw goes you
00:12:55
get two drones just because you get one
00:12:56
you get two sides of the drawer and then
00:12:58
they meet so you end up having two
00:12:59
bronze medalists
00:13:00
so um so the winner was gonna get the
00:13:02
silver and the loser gets the bronze is
00:13:04
that that's right right yeah yeah and
00:13:06
there's so there's two bronze medalists
00:13:07
and then the silver in the LeBron so I
00:13:09
was going into the semi-finals so if I'd
00:13:10
have won that I would have um I would
00:13:12
have been in the finals uh and just oh
00:13:15
the nerves got to me the news got to me
00:13:17
you know and I had the same routine
00:13:19
going to the going to the um the venue
00:13:22
you know there was a take you know
00:13:24
everybody CD recorder you know I had
00:13:26
listened to the same music I think and
00:13:28
I'm thinking
00:13:29
I was new to the sports yeah I feel
00:13:31
really heavy I feel really heavy and I
00:13:33
thought I know back now I think I was
00:13:34
just so nervous yeah I was just so
00:13:36
nervous I didn't I didn't you know get
00:13:37
into the stadium there's like 10 000
00:13:39
people I'm thinking oh just I'm used to
00:13:40
fighting around like in a club of a
00:13:42
couple hundred people it might be the
00:13:43
best but anyway it was just the
00:13:45
psychological Society got to me on that
00:13:46
day and I just yeah I just always got
00:13:49
outbox just got out boxed and
00:13:51
I just put that and put put that in my
00:13:54
head and and as it was a massive
00:13:55
learning curve so I never because I
00:13:57
never so I never had that moment ever
00:13:58
again in my career even though you know
00:14:00
I thought Mike Tyson and bad deals so I
00:14:03
thought they have a tour and all that
00:14:04
you know just like um you know there's
00:14:07
there's yeah yeah so that was a moment
00:14:09
where I was just so nervous so nervous
00:14:12
and I was just drained I don't know if
00:14:13
you get nervous before your runs and
00:14:15
stuff where where we you you you you
00:14:17
just can't get going you're jumping up
00:14:18
and down I'm so and I was so fit so fat
00:14:21
I'm jumping up and down I'm throwing a
00:14:22
few Punch or something oh why am I
00:14:24
getting so tired so early you know but
00:14:26
anyway I'll put that down just just
00:14:27
nervous I just the psychological side of
00:14:29
boxing just just got to me oh mate I I
00:14:31
am in no way comparing like what I do
00:14:33
with essentially fun runs to what you do
00:14:35
because I'm not even at that Elite level
00:14:36
but I'll be on the the start line for a
00:14:38
marathon or a half marathon and I'll
00:14:40
just there's been occasions where I'm
00:14:42
like I just want to get in the car and
00:14:43
drive home yeah I don't even want to be
00:14:45
here yeah yeah and then it gets the end
00:14:46
of the run and you you know whether you
00:14:48
get the result you want or not yeah you
00:14:49
feel amazing you feel amazing um but
00:14:51
just the nerves the anxiety it's a
00:14:53
terrible thing but I I would think
00:14:54
something like boxing where it's such a
00:14:56
lonely Sport and yeah when all you you
00:14:58
Corner men get out and you're just in
00:15:00
there alone with your opponent yeah
00:15:01
that's going to be the most
00:15:02
nerve-wracking thing in the world yeah
00:15:04
yeah but if I can come if you come back
00:15:05
to like what you when you asked me
00:15:07
before like I I you know I I back myself
00:15:10
you know I back myself as a bit of a
00:15:12
macho sort of you know you know within
00:15:15
with them or the way how how I conduct
00:15:16
myself but like um yeah yeah I'm just
00:15:18
like yeah you think you can beat me
00:15:20
because I'll get in the ring I think you
00:15:22
think you can beat me hey how dare you
00:15:24
get in the wrong thing you beat me
00:15:25
that's my that's what's going in my head
00:15:26
yeah I'll let you know what you're up to
00:15:28
is that essential I feel like you
00:15:29
probably need everyone that goes into a
00:15:31
boxing ring probably needs that right
00:15:32
yeah you need to yeah I don't know if
00:15:33
everyone thinks that but yeah that's
00:15:35
what I think you know and um
00:15:37
you have to you because if you don't
00:15:40
think that what's going to be a hard
00:15:41
night for you
00:15:45
it's gonna be a hard night for you yeah
00:15:47
you know I'm not in the boxing Rings a
00:15:50
hard day on a marathon Marathon course
00:15:52
where you might get a cramp
00:15:54
wow yeah okay so um so that's 2002. we
00:15:58
attempted to stick around for another
00:15:59
couple of years and maybe go to the
00:16:01
Olympics yeah yeah because no one around
00:16:04
in the Oceania region uh could beat me
00:16:07
you know so it was it was pretty much a
00:16:09
given that I'd make the Olympics 2000
00:16:11
Sydney Olympics
00:16:13
um
00:16:14
but uh I was 24 I think man my style
00:16:18
would suit the pro game a bit better and
00:16:20
I was just like man I want to try and
00:16:21
make some money so um yeah uh so yeah I
00:16:25
went against uh so I retired from
00:16:27
amateur boxing and and to him can you
00:16:30
remember how much your first paycheck
00:16:31
was this is probably 400.
00:16:32
[Laughter]
00:16:35
400 mate yeah you gave up your Olympic
00:16:38
dream performance yeah wow you won that
00:16:41
fight yeah yeah yeah what Did the lose
00:16:43
again yeah yeah I don't know
00:16:46
why why why so small yeah oh just
00:16:50
just just what it was you know like
00:16:53
um
00:16:54
uh you know you think about I suppose
00:16:57
you know you need you're behind even
00:16:59
good fighter it's important to have a
00:17:00
good team in terms of marketing all that
00:17:02
sort of stuff right how the times are
00:17:04
now like say for example if I've signed
00:17:07
by you know a big time promoter you know
00:17:09
yeah I went to you know you look at what
00:17:11
park has done you know and he didn't
00:17:12
even go the commonwealth games
00:17:14
um but it's just it's just you know tell
00:17:17
anything he got picked up by Duco and
00:17:19
they just they just
00:17:22
but at the same time he's got some
00:17:24
ability you know so it's probably yeah
00:17:25
on the other side is that's probably
00:17:27
what handed me so so everything I I I I
00:17:29
I earned uh yeah from from grassroot
00:17:33
yeah so okay so then you turn pro you
00:17:36
get 500 for that first fight and then
00:17:37
it's um yeah you're on a one hell of a
00:17:40
your career trajectory like yeah you're
00:17:42
winning fight after fight I remember a
00:17:44
couple of times there like you called
00:17:46
David tour out yeah not in a not a trash
00:17:48
talk way but just in a respectful sort
00:17:50
of boxing way and he just sort of
00:17:52
ignored that yeah yeah that's right yep
00:17:54
yeah so I was maybe 16 17-0 then I was a
00:17:58
fight in Christchurch I remember that I
00:18:00
said I wish everything all right because
00:18:02
I knew you know calling them out and for
00:18:05
that fight to actually happen would be a
00:18:06
long way down the track yeah there was
00:18:08
no response from him so I just carried
00:18:10
on doing my thing and then all of a
00:18:11
sudden I was ranked number six
00:18:12
heavyweight in the world with the WBO
00:18:14
and then it flips around he calls me out
00:18:17
you know he called me out because uh you
00:18:19
know I was I was ranked number six
00:18:21
everybody in the world and and
00:18:23
obviously he was wanting to make a make
00:18:25
a return back to the ring so at the time
00:18:28
I needed him
00:18:29
to build myself up and uh you know and
00:18:32
then but then it flipped itself around
00:18:33
where he needed me more than I needed
00:18:35
him you know um and obviously the then
00:18:39
the talking got going and then then it
00:18:41
finally happened yeah so what year was
00:18:43
that I remember the fight of the century
00:18:44
fight of the century 2009 2009 man that
00:18:47
was um yeah the hype the build up you
00:18:49
and you guys both got half a million
00:18:51
each yeah yeah and it how does that work
00:18:53
because it sounds like a lot of money
00:18:54
but I'm guessing you know once you pay
00:18:56
your trainer fees and whoever else and
00:18:58
taxes or whatever yeah what do you
00:19:00
actually end up with yeah
00:19:02
um well not 500 anyway
00:19:04
but it's not still a good chunk yeah
00:19:06
yeah it starts yeah still still a good
00:19:08
chunk there like and in 2009 that was
00:19:10
there was a there was there was a good
00:19:12
chunk of though and you know you think
00:19:14
about that one thing I want to say
00:19:15
around that one that fight that there
00:19:16
was a big learning thing for me it was a
00:19:18
big learning because I'm a humble dude I
00:19:20
just do my thing and
00:19:21
you know I got wrapped up in it you know
00:19:23
I got wrapped up in the hype wrapped up
00:19:25
and and and and and and in the moment
00:19:27
you know
00:19:29
um yeah I remember that so there was a
00:19:31
there was a TV show called um what was
00:19:34
it close up at seven with uh Mark
00:19:35
sainsbury that's right yeah and um I I
00:19:38
remember it clearly and you and you and
00:19:39
David tour were on there and it was it
00:19:41
was almost like you'd been prepped to
00:19:43
like build up the fire and trash talking
00:19:45
each other and I I knew you a little bit
00:19:47
and I knew David a little bit and I knew
00:19:49
it didn't really sit comfortably with
00:19:50
either of you two as as as humans but
00:19:52
yeah well you sort of forced to try and
00:19:55
I wouldn't say fourth yeah just put in
00:19:57
my head and and like I just yeah like
00:20:00
just talk it up talk whatever good the
00:20:02
thing and but I think back now I think
00:20:04
why the hell did I do that because
00:20:06
if there said to me you talk it up you
00:20:09
know I'll give you more money give you
00:20:10
more percentage over a certain amount of
00:20:12
pay-per-views and stuff but I'd say oh
00:20:15
yeah I just talk it up talk it up and
00:20:16
then started talking up then he started
00:20:18
talking back at me and then all of a
00:20:19
sudden it was promoted as strictly
00:20:21
business yeah I remember the poster
00:20:24
strictly business then all of a sudden
00:20:25
it got personal it got personal where
00:20:27
where I I regret some of the things that
00:20:30
I said and did and conducted it's just
00:20:32
like what can you remember anything
00:20:34
specific
00:20:36
um no not really I just think I just the
00:20:38
way I held myself and like at the press
00:20:40
conference and I'm thinking oh come on
00:20:42
I'm not that person yeah you know you
00:20:44
know I built up and then um
00:20:46
then yeah yeah like and just put so much
00:20:48
pressure
00:20:49
I was going to say put pressure on
00:20:51
myself but not really because on the
00:20:53
night
00:20:53
the flip side from being that the
00:20:55
Commonwealth Games semi semi-finals I
00:20:57
was so nervous fighting David too one of
00:21:00
the biggest punches in the on the globe
00:21:01
I wasn't even nervous so what does that
00:21:03
say I don't respect the man yeah I
00:21:06
didn't respect the man
00:21:08
totally respect them you know before and
00:21:11
after but like um just built myself
00:21:13
right up and then I was in this moment
00:21:15
and then I didn't respect them so I
00:21:17
wasn't nervous before that fight your
00:21:18
paths must have crossed right like were
00:21:20
you were your friends or acquaintances
00:21:22
oh mate we lived together in Las Vegas
00:21:24
when I first turned Pro right so my
00:21:26
first fight at 400 bucks and then my
00:21:27
second fight I fought in um and and Reno
00:21:29
and then Lake Tahoe and then in Nevada
00:21:31
so I lived with David in this in his
00:21:33
house he had a big house in Las Vegas so
00:21:35
we all lived together you know for like
00:21:37
a year and a half so
00:21:39
and and then this is a flight game too
00:21:41
in some ways you know I still get
00:21:42
[ __ ] hammered on excuse my language I
00:21:44
I still I still get hammered on on
00:21:46
social with some of some obviously his
00:21:48
supporters and this guy oh your big
00:21:49
mouth and you know you're good that you
00:21:51
got knocked out that uh not now still
00:21:53
yeah we're 13 years old on a weekly
00:21:55
basis yeah on a weekly basis I'm doing
00:21:58
my top tips [ __ ] you're a bum mate one
00:21:59
known listen to you you're a bum and I
00:22:01
think oh yeah like just say that to me
00:22:02
in my face but um but you know it's just
00:22:05
it just yeah
00:22:07
um I don't want that result to happen
00:22:09
and I was so confident but like um yeah
00:22:11
it is what it is and Dave is a good man
00:22:13
we've caught up and we've had some
00:22:14
Tequilas yeah I've had some tequila
00:22:16
since then and I was just like [ __ ] you
00:22:18
bugger you got me yeah yeah because um I
00:22:20
I'm sure you don't really want to want
00:22:22
to dwell on this but for anyone that
00:22:23
doesn't remember uh it's I I didn't
00:22:26
remember the full extent of it I watched
00:22:27
on YouTube yesterday knowing I was
00:22:28
coming to see you today yeah
00:22:30
um so the fight starts look look you
00:22:33
look comfortable it looks like you're
00:22:34
getting a couple of punches in yeah and
00:22:35
then but he knocks you out in the first
00:22:37
round yeah a second second yeah so he
00:22:40
rocked me in the first round yeah so I
00:22:41
was moving around
00:22:43
um I don't really remember that much but
00:22:44
I remember moving around just [ __ ] my
00:22:46
Jab
00:22:47
and I've always got a bad habit of
00:22:49
dropping my right hand you know and
00:22:51
obviously with the moment the occasion
00:22:53
I'm flicking around I'm moving around
00:22:54
all right
00:22:55
and then
00:22:57
um
00:22:57
yeah well I didn't really know what
00:22:59
happened I lost the replay and then I
00:23:01
watched the replay and then he sort of
00:23:02
just slipped and then jumped him with
00:23:03
his with his famous left hook and boom
00:23:05
just caught me on the I don't know
00:23:06
somewhere on my head and then I just
00:23:08
wobbled into my memory but he gone and
00:23:11
then then he jumped on me obviously he
00:23:13
jumped on me I'm only you know jumped on
00:23:14
me and he's a good finisher and then he
00:23:17
dropped me I'll pick up and then ding
00:23:20
ding ding Saved by the Bell
00:23:21
went to the corner come back out he just
00:23:24
jumped on me again and just but he
00:23:25
finished me off yeah so it was just like
00:23:27
yeah so how long how long do you get for
00:23:29
the break was it a minute a minute yeah
00:23:31
so did you do you remember much about
00:23:33
that about coming back out in the second
00:23:34
round or were you in la la land
00:23:36
um no I don't remember anything and
00:23:38
there's a lot of fights so I I don't
00:23:40
really remember what you know because in
00:23:42
the moment what's happening but I know
00:23:44
exactly what the fight plan is and stuff
00:23:45
like that and just
00:23:47
yeah yeah like I've been hit you know
00:23:49
throughout my career you know but
00:23:51
sometimes there's one punch there but he
00:23:53
gets you and you don't really know and
00:23:55
you know and I've done it to many other
00:23:57
people and I finally had it done to me
00:23:58
you know it's not it's not a good
00:24:00
feeling
00:24:01
um especially with the hype that was
00:24:02
built up and all that sort of stuff and
00:24:04
and it is what it is man this is this is
00:24:06
the sport you know like um this is
00:24:08
boxing but we're not playing marbles
00:24:10
yeah this is a serious business you know
00:24:12
but at that point where you get hurt are
00:24:14
you thinking oh [ __ ] I'm in trouble now
00:24:16
or are you just are you away with it and
00:24:17
you're
00:24:18
um um yeah yeah it's yeah I don't really
00:24:22
know like it's more of a
00:24:25
survive but I'm not really thinking it
00:24:27
but I'll tell you this now I wasn't
00:24:29
thinking about what I need to do you
00:24:31
know so it was quite a quite a quite a
00:24:32
quite a gray area where I just
00:24:34
like I say I didn't know what I did till
00:24:36
I watched the replay I think oh that's
00:24:38
all I did just put my hands up what I
00:24:39
should have done was moved but I wasn't
00:24:41
thinking clearly enough give me five
00:24:42
minutes mate hey Dave just stop budget
00:24:44
Dave stop punching just give me five
00:24:46
minutes to clear my head and then um and
00:24:48
then I'll come back to you it doesn't
00:24:50
work like that
00:24:51
um so when you get hit with a big with a
00:24:53
big punch like that does it does it hurt
00:24:54
or does yeah yeah no it doesn't no I'm
00:24:57
asking from the position of someone
00:24:58
that's never been hurt oh yeah and I get
00:25:00
asked that quite a lot you know like if
00:25:01
I grabbed your hand and pinched it that
00:25:03
hurts more than getting punched right
00:25:04
yeah yeah I sent it with two or whatever
00:25:06
it's just more of a shock it's like a
00:25:08
thud boom
00:25:09
um but yeah that's not like oh that
00:25:11
hurts don't hurt me again it's more of a
00:25:13
I don't want to get with that again
00:25:14
punch you know so you still get your
00:25:17
wits about you yeah but like pinching
00:25:19
someone's arm yeah that's more annoying
00:25:21
than slam that nobody eat or the body
00:25:23
yeah have you ever watched a replay of
00:25:25
the fight oh no yeah yeah yeah it's a
00:25:27
hard to watch yeah yeah it took me it
00:25:28
took me probably seven or eight years to
00:25:30
obviously I've seen the replay when it
00:25:31
first happened yeah because it was on
00:25:33
the news and all this bloody everywhere
00:25:34
you know
00:25:37
but I was just so just yeah I just
00:25:40
yeah just yeah still things yeah do you
00:25:43
like so so when you watch it do you
00:25:45
watch it from the perspective of oh damn
00:25:47
I should have done that or I could have
00:25:48
done that or is it deeper than that yeah
00:25:51
yeah it's deep in there it's just like
00:25:53
just like
00:25:55
just like I just don't watch it yeah I
00:25:56
just don't watch it yeah you go to
00:25:58
YouTubers buddy
00:26:00
you know so
00:26:02
the the second round where it looks
00:26:04
looks like it gets you with maybe 15 or
00:26:06
20 punches yeah yeah oh yeah yeah you're
00:26:08
just not not defending yourself or
00:26:09
anything yeah it's it's it's hard to
00:26:12
watch and I'm not you yeah yeah yeah
00:26:13
yeah yeah yeah it is it is it's um
00:26:17
uh yeah that's very brutal what do you
00:26:20
mean it took yeah it is it's the the
00:26:22
most brutal thing ever it's like it's
00:26:24
yeah awful
00:26:26
um but so um what do you mean it took
00:26:29
seven years to get over it what do you
00:26:30
mean because your career carried on like
00:26:31
yeah it does oh 100 yeah I keep coming
00:26:34
back but just probably mentally you know
00:26:36
just I don't know just hindered me like
00:26:37
I think about it every day you know just
00:26:39
thinking like man I just it's so gutted
00:26:41
that I lost I was just so good and then
00:26:43
I lost you know because it's a big fight
00:26:45
for New Zealand and I don't even asked
00:26:47
David like you know spending some time
00:26:50
together and I just said man what's
00:26:51
what's the most fight what's the biggest
00:26:54
fight because he's fought me next to us
00:26:55
man I believe Lenox Lewis is probably
00:26:56
one of the greatest fighters
00:26:58
on this planet you know um but are you
00:27:01
talking about the tour Linux Lewis fight
00:27:03
yeah no I'm just talking about Linux
00:27:04
Lewis as a writer as a fighter he's you
00:27:06
know
00:27:13
what's been the most for the year the
00:27:16
fight that you've been you know
00:27:17
psychologically it's got you you know
00:27:18
you know this really you're gonna drop
00:27:20
here fighting you you know and I just
00:27:22
thinking about oh I didn't think I think
00:27:23
of that when I when I sort of asked a
00:27:25
question yeah
00:27:26
man I couldn't lose you because I might
00:27:28
have lost you man you know so that was
00:27:31
just such the hype you know and I didn't
00:27:32
think about any of that sort of stuff
00:27:34
like me I'm just training I'm just going
00:27:36
to beat you I'm going to do this I'm
00:27:37
gonna do that but I didn't think about
00:27:39
all the stuff that you know hey if I
00:27:41
lost man well what happened but I
00:27:42
suppose
00:27:43
yeah I suppose you just can't entertain
00:27:45
the thought of losing no no exactly yeah
00:27:47
and that's what I mean so it doesn't
00:27:48
entertain it so because I didn't think
00:27:50
I'd lose you know because I just knew
00:27:51
you know if and I've had what 34
00:27:53
professional fights and it's not once
00:27:55
I've gone into a ring thinking I was
00:27:57
going to lose you know not one two so
00:27:59
boxing is all about psychological side
00:28:01
you know it doesn't matter how big your
00:28:02
muscles are your arms are any of that
00:28:04
sort of stuff what's your head saying to
00:28:06
you when you're walking to the ring how
00:28:07
confident are you yeah that's fine you
00:28:09
know and um so so what happens after
00:28:11
that fight were you did you go back to
00:28:13
your dressing room or you're taking
00:28:15
taken away to Hospital for an evaluation
00:28:17
or yeah I I went to went to hospital
00:28:20
yeah yeah I don't know it was it wasn't
00:28:22
a good it was a good night yeah it was a
00:28:24
bit of a glaze for a few days to be
00:28:25
honest yeah just yeah okay we just went
00:28:28
away yeah I just went away and but then
00:28:30
I just got back until you know my my
00:28:31
mentality just wanted to claw my way
00:28:34
back you know I went from rank number 60
00:28:36
where in the world to like probably
00:28:37
number 200 in the world yeah it's just
00:28:39
yeah just how the sport goes and then I
00:28:41
thought I don't know how long later I
00:28:43
thought John bloody My ultimate goal was
00:28:45
to fight for a world title you know when
00:28:47
I started boxing at the age of 20. you
00:28:49
know so so you you were the same sort of
00:28:51
age as um like uh Joseph Parker now how
00:28:53
do you think you'd get on again someone
00:28:55
like him do you feel like you're in the
00:28:57
same league your prime minister
00:29:00
yeah different styles uh yeah but he
00:29:02
he's I reckon he always get better
00:29:04
especially with um the connection with
00:29:06
him with Tyson Fury and being amongst
00:29:12
you know like
00:29:15
um yeah I would have been a good scrap
00:29:16
him and I and both in our Heyday you
00:29:19
know but it's not to be even thing
00:29:21
that's that's it man I just support them
00:29:22
and yeah and that's all we do do you
00:29:25
think um did you leave the sport at the
00:29:26
right time I mean we've talked about
00:29:27
your business stuff and you you like
00:29:29
you're very very smart like you you know
00:29:31
there's a lot going on so it doesn't you
00:29:33
know you you see some boxes and you go
00:29:35
oh they took they took one hit to me
00:29:37
yeah I don't feel like you're in that
00:29:38
sort of position yeah or some days I
00:29:40
think that is when I'm trying to
00:29:42
remember something
00:29:44
what's that called oh darling what's
00:29:48
your name again
00:29:50
no no it's just uh no I was I I was
00:29:54
content with retiring
00:29:56
um because I had the gym so I had stuff
00:29:58
to you know um sometimes I get thinking
00:30:01
man I wish I wish I could no no I
00:30:04
wouldn't say I wish I could get back in
00:30:05
the boxing but it was more like
00:30:07
you need that drive you need that hunger
00:30:08
you need that that determination you
00:30:10
need to do whatever it takes to get the
00:30:13
training daughter says I don't have that
00:30:14
no more I have I have that in business
00:30:15
but I don't have that in in boxing like
00:30:18
um and I know I could like
00:30:20
you know a couple of years ago I've got
00:30:22
to train my ass off before like um
00:30:23
what's his name Paul Gallen or something
00:30:25
like that right and got a big payday you
00:30:26
know and I can still do that now but
00:30:28
like
00:30:29
I'm just not driven to I'm not driven to
00:30:31
not for the money you're not for the um
00:30:33
just I'm just I know what it's like and
00:30:35
I'm just not yeah I just don't have the
00:30:37
drive for it you need to drive the
00:30:38
hunger the determination to do whatever
00:30:40
it takes so when you're in that ring
00:30:42
you'll do whatever it takes to win you
00:30:44
know you die in the ring if you have to
00:30:45
you just get the win you know yeah so I
00:30:48
don't have that no more and you
00:30:49
mentioned before that you um you did
00:30:51
some aspiring with uh Mike Tyson yeah
00:30:53
yeah yeah when was that yeah there was
00:30:55
um if we're talking years that was in
00:30:56
2005 right yeah I went over there
00:30:59
Phoenix Arizona
00:31:01
um that was on my connection yeah so so
00:31:04
um yeah so I was there for two three
00:31:06
weeks three weeks there was there was an
00:31:07
eye opener and Tyson he's actually a
00:31:11
really nice guy he's a nice guy yeah
00:31:12
yeah yeah just really yeah but I can see
00:31:15
he's one of those guys you either like
00:31:16
you or he doesn't like you you know so
00:31:18
he's fired um most days and very
00:31:21
ferocious he's you know he's got that
00:31:23
high-pitched voice
00:31:27
[Laughter]
00:31:31
it's a bit of podcast here say what you
00:31:34
want yeah crazy [ __ ] man I
00:31:36
didn't I didn't realize they're bringing
00:31:38
crazy white guys like you down in New
00:31:40
Zealand you're crazy but I remember we
00:31:41
were aspiring
00:31:43
it was fine yeah and then um we're um
00:31:47
yeah we'll go and like sparring's really
00:31:49
heated you know like so when you when
00:31:52
you say sparring um it's not like gentle
00:31:54
punching no no you go 80 90 100 right
00:31:58
right yeah yeah like he's trying to
00:31:59
knock me out you know he's trying to
00:32:00
think who's this who's this white kid
00:32:02
man coming out of New Zealand I want to
00:32:03
try and inspire me right that's probably
00:32:04
the mentality I have when I spy anyway
00:32:06
you know who you think you are you know
00:32:08
so you come across the ring man he's
00:32:09
just trying to take yeah and take take
00:32:11
my head off you know uh and then the
00:32:13
next bar next day he hit me in the groin
00:32:16
area so he's throwing some heavy shots
00:32:18
to hit me in the groin area I said hey
00:32:19
Mike watch the low shot to go sorry
00:32:21
Shane I'm thinking oh my God how did the
00:32:23
baddest man baddest man on the planet go
00:32:26
sorry Shane well but he's uh you know
00:32:29
[ __ ] man he's um he's he's a trooper all
00:32:32
right he's he's the man what a claim to
00:32:34
phone being punched in the dick
00:32:36
how good is that oh yeah so so when did
00:32:41
you when did you decide to retire when
00:32:42
did you decide the answer I've had
00:32:43
enough uh so my last fight I had I had a
00:32:48
fight where
00:32:50
um
00:32:51
there's no way I should I lost but I but
00:32:53
I lost it I lost by a guy that I
00:32:55
shouldn't have lost to but he got me on
00:32:57
that nine I think man there's no way you
00:32:59
know but uh so I lost two fights in a
00:33:02
row and I hadn't lost two fights in a
00:33:04
row as a pro so it was coming up to my
00:33:06
third fight so I think I I said
00:33:09
um yes publicly that if I lose this
00:33:11
fight I'll retire
00:33:33
oh that guy that guy that sees his
00:33:36
retired and doesn't retire you know so
00:33:39
but I think the timing's right you know
00:33:40
like it's strange the way because it's a
00:33:42
like in terms of professional sports
00:33:44
people so you get rugby players and
00:33:46
someone will come up and be better than
00:33:47
them and they'll be knocked aside yeah
00:33:48
or they'll be injured and they can no
00:33:50
longer play yeah um but boxing it's it's
00:33:52
a it's a different sort of thing like
00:33:54
you're sort of you're sort of in charge
00:33:55
of yourself and yes I suppose for a lot
00:33:57
of people it's the fear of the Unknown
00:33:58
about what comes next that keeps you
00:34:00
there yes but did you do you have like a
00:34:03
plan in mind you're like I'm gonna set
00:34:04
up a gym I'm gonna yeah the gym was
00:34:06
already going oh okay yeah I had the gym
00:34:08
already going so if you think about like
00:34:09
fully focusing on your career and no
00:34:12
distractions I had all of that I had all
00:34:14
the distractions you know I just got
00:34:15
married and you know a young boy and I
00:34:18
had the gym so I'm running the gym
00:34:19
running classes and hey man Shane you're
00:34:21
a professional fighter you know and then
00:34:23
when you think about the things that I I
00:34:24
generated and and achieved in my earlier
00:34:28
days it's because I was fully focused I
00:34:30
was fully focused I didn't lose anything
00:34:31
I was just win win win because I know
00:34:34
distractions it's when you start
00:34:36
bringing in distractions and you know
00:34:37
which which I had distractions which
00:34:39
could be good distractions or bad
00:34:41
distractions there were distractions
00:34:42
because it takes you off track to where
00:34:44
you're fully focusing on which is to win
00:34:46
your next fight so um yeah at hindsight
00:34:50
it's hindsight a yeah then you can look
00:34:52
back oh yeah I understand you know how
00:34:53
things work you know and those things
00:34:55
here and in boxing you learn the hard
00:34:57
way well everything I mean everything
00:34:59
works out for a reason in life doesn't
00:35:01
matter yes yeah everything happens for a
00:35:02
reason and um it seems like you're in a
00:35:04
good place now yeah um now what about um
00:35:06
say I'm guessing most people listening
00:35:08
to this like the the worst fear would be
00:35:11
like getting in a getting in a boxing
00:35:12
ring and just that that loneliness and
00:35:14
you know the the fear of like you know
00:35:16
being heard or being humiliated or
00:35:17
whatever but I'm guessing for you like
00:35:20
um you were probably more petrified
00:35:21
doing Like Dancing with the Stars
00:35:24
you did that the same year as my um as
00:35:26
my ex-wife JJ right yeah that's right
00:35:29
yeah yeah yeah yeah we're around the
00:35:31
same time yeah I asked you about that on
00:35:33
the way here I said I said did you
00:35:35
manage to do with Shane and he said she
00:35:36
said no Shannon Nero to just sort of
00:35:37
keeping themselves a little bit and yeah
00:35:39
yeah yeah yeah
00:35:41
um yeah so so you get asked to do it do
00:35:43
you say no straight away or do you say
00:35:45
yes straight away uh well I said I said
00:35:48
I actually asked my wife at the time I
00:35:50
said what do you think about dancing
00:35:51
with the association yeah give it a go
00:35:53
hey cool so I love a challenge in life
00:35:55
you know and I can't dance I couldn't
00:35:56
dance in sorry I couldn't dance before
00:35:58
and I couldn't dance afterwards and but
00:36:01
whatever I do I just I put everything
00:36:03
into it like I said so so I was training
00:36:06
with nerita like I'd come here in the
00:36:08
morning I'd train a couple of people and
00:36:09
I'd be with her by nine o'clock and then
00:36:12
I'd leave her leave her place at four
00:36:14
and then I'll come here and then you
00:36:16
know so but like yeah it was it was a
00:36:18
challenge but I I loved it but I'd never
00:36:20
do it again yeah but in terms of the
00:36:22
psychological side of things it was
00:36:24
boxing gave me uh
00:36:26
because I think about you know people
00:36:27
have said like is it harder going out
00:36:28
for Dancing With the Stars or hard of
00:36:30
going out for a fight I go oh no I've
00:36:32
got to put boxing in front of that
00:36:33
because 100 yeah yeah yeah yeah but but
00:36:37
I remember like um
00:36:39
uh yeah and James would would agree it's
00:36:42
like you're out backstage and everything
00:36:43
is live you know live you know you train
00:36:45
all week Monday to Friday then you go
00:36:47
into the studio Saturday and Sunday for
00:36:49
the rehearsal rehearsal rehearsal and
00:36:51
then you're live on a Sunday night so it
00:36:53
was it was daunting but um but that's
00:36:57
it was a great chapter in my life did
00:37:00
you because she's um JoJo's been in
00:37:02
radio for like 30 years uh but she still
00:37:04
gets people coming up to her now like
00:37:05
five six seven years whatever it was
00:37:07
later uh talking about Dancing with the
00:37:09
Stars all right yeah yeah you get that
00:37:11
quite a bit you get like just as many
00:37:12
people uh talking to you about that than
00:37:15
the boxing yeah not so much now it still
00:37:17
comes back to the boxing but like um but
00:37:19
around that time it's interesting
00:37:21
because my fan base was was not big
00:37:23
blokey guys it was more um 13 year old
00:37:27
girls yeah and and and and sort of uh
00:37:30
yeah Housewives and older yeah so I
00:37:32
would go to the North Coast 74 B and
00:37:34
some of the all the old all the old
00:37:35
girls how can I get a photo oh my god
00:37:37
I've never had that before but
00:37:39
yeah
00:37:40
um yes I changed my fan base here but it
00:37:42
was um
00:37:43
that was good everything's good it's
00:37:45
good how long did you last you did okay
00:37:48
didn't you uh yeah eight weeks eight
00:37:50
weeks yeah I said eight weeks yeah yeah
00:37:52
oh that's good going that's good going
00:37:54
um can I ask you a few a few quick run
00:37:56
questions yeah yeah okay what do you
00:37:58
listen to when you run
00:37:59
oh my old school my old school music
00:38:01
like Seven Spanish Angels Willie Nelson
00:38:04
with my girlfriend she's just like oh
00:38:07
mate I want to slip my wrist yeah please
00:38:09
tell me please tell me that wasn't your
00:38:10
Hype music before a fight or mate when I
00:38:12
come out I come out to Kenny Rogers
00:38:13
again but yeah yeah yeah
00:38:16
um
00:38:24
what's your favorite place to run a
00:38:26
favorite place to run uh just just
00:38:28
around the block well I love you yeah
00:38:30
just ran home yeah
00:38:31
um do you have a favorite show favorite
00:38:33
shoe um I used to love Puma because I
00:38:36
should be sponsored by them but I gotta
00:38:37
buy my own shoes now so um anything that
00:38:39
is available just whatever whatever's on
00:38:42
sale
00:38:43
um one thing um one thing I'd like to
00:38:45
talk about with guests on this um
00:38:45
podcast is what I call the three ifs
00:38:47
like fails [ __ ] ups and flaws because I
00:38:49
I'm a firm believer that um I mean you
00:38:52
learn more from those things than what
00:38:53
you do from your successes in life yes
00:38:55
as long as you take them in and digest
00:38:57
them and learn from them they can be the
00:38:58
best lessons ever yes um what is it for
00:39:00
you what's the what's the big one in
00:39:01
your life I think your biggest flaws
00:39:03
probably being like two driven
00:39:05
never being satisfied yeah yeah yeah
00:39:07
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah and that's what
00:39:11
I've been talking about over the last
00:39:12
couple of days just not been I wish I
00:39:14
was more content yeah yeah I mean the
00:39:17
one that's like it stands out for every
00:39:18
New Zealander that knows you and follows
00:39:20
boxing the the tour fight yeah they
00:39:22
would I mean that could be seen as a
00:39:23
fail do you see it yeah right now did
00:39:25
you learn a lot from that um
00:39:27
I learned a lot in terms of like I say I
00:39:30
I fight happened again
00:39:33
um I would um I'd certainly conduct
00:39:35
myself in a different way you know
00:39:37
um like in the lead up to it you mean or
00:39:39
during the fight yeah yeah no in the
00:39:41
lead up yeah lead up you know I just got
00:39:43
too personal you know whereas I don't do
00:39:45
that I never did it before that fight
00:39:46
and I never did it after that fight you
00:39:47
know all of a sudden I did it in that
00:39:49
fight you know so
00:39:51
um it's hard it's just it seems like
00:39:52
it's such an important part of the game
00:39:53
now but it's just it doesn't necessarily
00:39:55
sit well with um with with new
00:39:57
zealanders yeah I see I see I see Joseph
00:39:59
Parker do it sometimes and you can tell
00:40:00
he's been asked to do it to support the
00:40:03
fight but it's uh yeah it doesn't
00:40:04
necessarily sit naturally nah no it
00:40:07
doesn't like I'm confident within my
00:40:08
thing but I don't have to voice it you
00:40:10
know I don't have to voice that I can go
00:40:11
because I just I can do it without you
00:40:13
know actually speaking louder than words
00:40:14
eh you know so
00:40:17
um but you know buddy bugger David he
00:40:20
got me over there there's one thing I
00:40:22
don't know if uh if there's one fight
00:40:24
that I get up for would be but if it
00:40:26
would be him but he's but he's a good
00:40:28
man and yeah you know much love to the
00:40:29
man well it's good that you've got that
00:40:31
relationship now yeah you mentioned
00:40:32
before that you guys have sat down and
00:40:34
had some tequila yeah yeah what was the
00:40:36
circumstance of that oh I just I it was
00:40:38
seven years later yeah I got a seven
00:40:40
year thing I said man I need to connect
00:40:42
with with David you know just like man
00:40:44
whatever it was to come and come around
00:40:46
for dinner
00:40:48
um my place and we you know just just
00:40:51
just just yawned it was it was awesome
00:40:53
you know so sometimes from his area or
00:40:56
calling and he's bought some
00:40:57
counterpunch gear off me before too
00:40:59
boxing gear so um
00:41:01
so so now he he's a good he's a good
00:41:04
amazing genuine man he's there's there's
00:41:06
no faking with him yeah there's no
00:41:08
there's no [ __ ] hey like um he's
00:41:10
just genuine just a genuine good bugger
00:41:12
yeah that's so nice and he's had some
00:41:15
like it's funny you look at you know
00:41:16
both your careers post boxing like he's
00:41:18
had some terrible luck yeah in terms of
00:41:20
like management and being ripped off
00:41:22
yeah he must he must look at you and
00:41:24
think [ __ ] Shane's done good um yeah
00:41:26
yeah he's very positive like yeah he
00:41:29
does he does the say Shane you've done
00:41:31
well and it's very nice to to hear that
00:41:33
and
00:41:35
um yeah I I do feel from you know for
00:41:38
for the man and what he's done yeah he
00:41:39
the things he's done though the guys
00:41:41
that he's beaten oh my God you know like
00:41:43
he's probably a guy the only guy that I
00:41:45
know that shouldn't you know shouldn't
00:41:46
should have been a world champion over
00:41:47
and over again but just you know and the
00:41:51
things he had to go through
00:41:52
um you know all that Financial stuff and
00:41:55
lawyers and all that sort of stuff for
00:41:57
the battles I wouldn't wish that on
00:41:59
anyone but that seems to happen a lot of
00:42:01
unboxing it seems like there's a lot of
00:42:02
like shady sharks around yeah but you
00:42:04
got through unscape yeah yeah he's done
00:42:06
so well yeah thank you yeah I had a good
00:42:09
team you know a good manager Ken
00:42:10
rangefield you know
00:42:12
one thing I I you know I trusted the man
00:42:14
and uh we're still really good friends
00:42:16
now uh I I didn't have a big team you
00:42:19
know just just some and what about um
00:42:21
like plans for like the next are you
00:42:22
much of a like a goal set or a planet
00:42:24
like where do you see yourself in five
00:42:26
years ten years yeah um yeah do you sort
00:42:28
of go with the flow oil yeah I I need to
00:42:30
work on my my goals um but not work on
00:42:33
my goals but like um
00:42:34
but supposedly comes down to the content
00:42:36
thing you know I get to a goal and I
00:42:38
achieve a goal um but I'm still not
00:42:40
happy it's probably just make another
00:42:42
one my goal is not to be in Auckland in
00:42:43
five years yeah where would you like to
00:42:45
be uh Tauranga really Tauranga yeah yeah
00:42:47
well I'm from Gisborne you know so I
00:42:49
want to be closer to my mum and dad
00:42:51
um my son lives there so I want to be
00:42:53
close to him uh yeah and and yeah I
00:42:56
guess you said you earlier I I launched
00:42:58
my um counter punch Fitness training app
00:43:01
so I'm really want to really focus on
00:43:03
that and focus on counter punch those
00:43:04
are two things I really want to focus on
00:43:06
um and just wanna yeah I I don't
00:43:09
lifestyle a bit of Lifestyle I don't
00:43:10
want to keep grinding every day like I
00:43:12
have done I just bought a bike the other
00:43:13
day a motorbike dirt bikes just so I can
00:43:16
because I just work every day otherwise
00:43:18
just work every day and I just want to
00:43:19
ever have a Time on on a weekend and
00:43:21
just do my own thing and if you lived in
00:43:23
total you could become the mount Warrior
00:43:25
yeah
00:43:32
yeah I am you're a brilliant man you've
00:43:35
done so so well and uh yeah thank you
00:43:37
very much for your time today really
00:43:38
appreciate it appreciate it yeah
