00:00:27
Isaac Peach welcome to my podcast thanks
00:00:29
for having me right it's so good this is
00:00:31
the first time we've actually met but I
00:00:32
I feel like I know you from seeing you
00:00:34
through different bits and pieces and
00:00:35
also hearing a lot about you through our
00:00:38
mutual friend
00:00:39
mamoto she's um she's actually said a
00:00:41
lot of uh a lot of quite offensive
00:00:43
things about you which we'll get to the
00:00:44
bottom bottom of today um first of all
00:00:47
before we um get into the the meat uh
00:00:49
Mike Tyson versus Jake
00:00:51
Paul I hate everything about
00:00:54
that um I hope Mike Tyson's right I
00:00:58
think he could get knocked out by Jake
00:01:00
Paul cuz he's 58 years old and I think
00:01:02
it's ridiculous and I think 58 you yeah
00:01:06
I just hope he doesn't I hope Mike tyon
00:01:08
knocks him out but I really worry that
00:01:10
he gets hurt in that fight to be honest
00:01:13
Jake Paul's an athlete now that's the
00:01:15
problem and he's
00:01:17
26
00:01:18
H does does experience count for
00:01:21
nothing experience counts for stuff but
00:01:24
I don't know I don't know I think age
00:01:26
does too man 58 come on I'm 42 and like
00:01:30
struggle 58 I know he's Mike Tyson but
00:01:33
Mike Tyson was quitting [ __ ] when he
00:01:35
was 42 he was done so 58 I I think it's
00:01:38
dumb yeah okay um who is Isaac
00:01:44
Peach [ __ ] I don't know if I know
00:01:47
that um I don't know man probably a guy
00:01:52
that loves his family and loves his kids
00:01:55
is more than anything and I do a
00:01:57
shitload of boxing there h yeah from
00:02:00
what I know about you which is um very
00:02:02
limited it's mainly through Word of
00:02:04
Mouth stuff from other people um a dude
00:02:06
with a big heart and a dude that's
00:02:08
fiercely loyal yeah I think so yeah so
00:02:13
he was a fighter now he's uh thought to
00:02:16
be the best boxing trainer in New
00:02:18
Zealand I don't know man you're only as
00:02:20
good as your last fighter you know like
00:02:22
yeah whatever the labels don't mean much
00:02:24
to me but I mean we're trying to our
00:02:28
Gym's trying to do something that hasn't
00:02:29
been done in that's to hit guys on the
00:02:31
world stage consistently and I think
00:02:33
we're getting there yeah so you were
00:02:36
quite figh of yourself 13 fights 12 wins
00:02:38
One n one loss by Split Decision yeah I
00:02:42
I fought as much for years and then I
00:02:44
fought those Pro fights but I
00:02:46
mean yeah I I'm not big on my fighting
00:02:50
my my kind of life is me being a trainer
00:02:53
now and I don't don't really to be
00:02:54
honest never go back to my days of a
00:02:56
fighter I mean yeah in terms of like
00:02:59
talking about it or yeah I just think
00:03:01
revisiting yeah when when I fought it
00:03:04
was I felt like it was different I mean
00:03:06
we just drunk piss it was just I was
00:03:09
terrible alcoholic I was tough as
00:03:10
mentally
00:03:12
and yeah I don't know if I was in my i'
00:03:15
would kick me out so I don't let any of
00:03:17
my guys do anything that I used to do
00:03:20
yeah yeah this is definitely um yeah we
00:03:23
we can get into that later this is
00:03:25
something that Mia and moto moto has
00:03:26
talked about you she said when she knew
00:03:28
in the early days You' turn up you you
00:03:30
know have you have a sigy out of your
00:03:31
mouth um wreaking of PSE um but it seems
00:03:35
like you are there there's that um Tim
00:03:37
that's throwing around functioning
00:03:39
alcoholic um but it seems like you never
00:03:41
you never missed training you never
00:03:42
missed a fight you know you you burnt
00:03:45
the candles at both ends I guess that's
00:03:46
another saying um was it a fair
00:03:48
assessment yeah I used to win everything
00:03:51
in the gym used to make sure I was
00:03:53
determined to I think because I was
00:03:54
probably frown upon for acting how I
00:03:57
used to just smoke 20 plus a day and
00:04:00
drink every day and still be relatively
00:04:04
successful um which I think is stupid
00:04:07
now but back then yeah and you are
00:04:09
functioning as a holic and mentally are
00:04:10
strong so you know you kind of get you
00:04:13
get [ __ ] done but nowhere near to where
00:04:15
you could have got [ __ ] down yeah yeah
00:04:17
so so who who was Isaac Peach as a young
00:04:20
guy what were you like were you were you
00:04:21
were you angry did you have like a chip
00:04:23
on your shoulder about something no no I
00:04:25
I had good parents I'm one or six six
00:04:28
kids um I'm the oldest I'm very I don't
00:04:32
know bit crazy when I was young I
00:04:34
suppose um was into a bit of everything
00:04:38
but just a normal kid yeah I love sport
00:04:40
played every sport I still do love sport
00:04:43
love rugby league love
00:04:45
rugby love I love every sport where did
00:04:48
the um where did the love of boxing come
00:04:49
from that came later I didn't start
00:04:52
boxing till I was
00:04:54
probably
00:04:55
18 and I think I always like I think
00:04:59
everyone's sort of likes boxing or
00:05:01
violence in a sense right and um yeah I
00:05:03
went and watched a fight and went to a
00:05:06
gym and that was the end of it yeah you
00:05:08
but I think most of us I don't know I
00:05:11
like I I really enjoy watching like
00:05:13
these Combat Sports but I couldn't think
00:05:15
of anything worse than getting in
00:05:16
getting in a
00:05:17
ring like it would just scare the [ __ ]
00:05:20
out of me like best case scenario you
00:05:22
win
00:05:24
um not a not a pleasant scenario you get
00:05:27
humiliated like knocked out early worst
00:05:29
case scenario something bad happens to
00:05:30
your like um you know to your physical
00:05:33
health like it's scares the [ __ ] out of
00:05:36
me there's nothing like it there's I
00:05:39
don't think there's anything in the
00:05:40
world like combat sport boxing I suppose
00:05:43
MMA that's the same thing now like
00:05:45
you're putting yourself in a very
00:05:46
vulnerable position by doing it so
00:05:48
that's why people people doing it
00:05:51
properly deserve respect and the sad
00:05:52
thing about the sport is that people
00:05:55
that are at the top get smoked when they
00:05:57
lose and people just treat white [ __ ]
00:06:00
and to go to that top and try and
00:06:04
perform in front of everyone is a
00:06:06
massive thing cuz like you say you've
00:06:07
got everything you by yourself and
00:06:09
there's all these variables that can
00:06:11
happen and I suppose the worst one you
00:06:14
can die so yeah I think every fighter
00:06:18
deserves respect every fighter that's
00:06:21
like doing it properly doing it for a
00:06:22
living really deserves respect yeah what
00:06:26
about your um love of tatos where did
00:06:28
that begin
00:06:31
[ __ ] out of control it's getting worse
00:06:35
is it you you're not you're not finished
00:06:37
yet you're still what's on did I see
00:06:40
some um some EBS on your on your right
00:06:43
hand what have you what have you got oh
00:06:44
no that was that was kind of silly that
00:06:46
was um I've got a little Muslim boy in
00:06:48
my gym and he used to put on his social
00:06:52
media with a fight with
00:06:54
fight train hard fight easy or something
00:06:57
and I hate that saying cuz you don't
00:06:59
fight easy or whatever the stupid saying
00:07:01
is so like you train hard you fight hard
00:07:03
and you be hard that everything has to
00:07:05
be hard I said show we a ttoo today I
00:07:08
want it tto on my hand and he's he's
00:07:10
like very conservative he's okay
00:07:12
so well is just like train hard Fight
00:07:16
Hard be [ __ ] hard when did you get
00:07:18
that done at what age no not a long ago
00:07:21
he's my four he's my 14y old Muslim in
00:07:24
the gym and he came and just yeah he he
00:07:27
looked at my head and just fing AR
00:07:30
attack but yeah did you um oh this is my
00:07:33
dog just coming in to join us hello
00:07:35
babba hey come here so did you when you
00:07:39
get a tattoo like that on your hand um
00:07:41
bear in mind you're a dad of four now do
00:07:44
you do you like do you do you run it
00:07:46
past your wife no I never run a tto past
00:07:48
my wife but my wife doesn't care like my
00:07:52
wife that's what they I about she
00:07:53
doesn't care she yeah and have you got a
00:07:56
peach um you're wearing a peach boxing
00:07:58
um hoodie have you a peach boxing tattoo
00:08:00
y have you where's yours I got a big one
00:08:04
I there oh [ __ ] wow that is that is huge
00:08:08
um yeah M and Moto she's got one on on
00:08:10
her neck neck yeah which she loves one
00:08:12
on my wrist too
00:08:13
yeah oh you got two did you forget you
00:08:16
had the first one no well that one was
00:08:18
covered so I thought I'd get one there
00:08:20
as
00:08:21
well so so um Peach boxing um where did
00:08:25
it begin humble beginnings right on the
00:08:27
on the the deck in your house I had a
00:08:30
what happened I had a deck in Sunnyville
00:08:33
and I started training my brother so my
00:08:35
brother was an amateur he kind of I kind
00:08:36
of gave it away and he wanted to keep
00:08:39
going so I kind of trained him a little
00:08:41
bit and we basically had a deck that was
00:08:43
on a slant and we put ropes around it we
00:08:45
a couple of bags so it was like a
00:08:47
makeshift sort of boxing ring yeah just
00:08:50
on a deck and then um Jerome was my next
00:08:53
neighborhood that's my your pamp one of
00:08:55
the best boxers in the country at the
00:08:56
moment yeah so he was my next door over
00:08:58
so when I know we probably had two or
00:09:00
three of us he came over and that was
00:09:03
the beginning we're fighting out of a um
00:09:05
deck and then we we moved house um not
00:09:10
too far away and we had a single garage
00:09:12
so we built like a Bola you know like a
00:09:15
clear light sort of Bola we just bought
00:09:17
that hung bags in it and had a single
00:09:19
garage with rope around it concrete
00:09:21
floor and that's when it started getting
00:09:23
more serious but we still [ __ ] we good
00:09:26
Fighters we had David light there Jerome
00:09:28
Andre was there
00:09:30
and we all just trained out of this
00:09:31
shitty little garage with kind of old
00:09:34
bags and when it rained you got wet so
00:09:37
the the deck scenario in Sunnyvale how
00:09:39
how long ago was that what are we
00:09:41
talking don't know 2013 right okay so
00:09:45
like 101 years yeah and that would have
00:09:46
been for probably three or four years
00:09:49
and then we had the other place for
00:09:50
probably same I guess was it called
00:09:53
Peach boxing in the beginning or you
00:09:54
didn't have a name or we didn't have a
00:09:56
name to start with I think was actually
00:09:57
we call it sunny boxing we didn't really
00:09:59
have a name I don't really know how they
00:10:02
it all came about that side of it yeah
00:10:05
so so the story about Jerome pimpan it's
00:10:07
um hilarious really so he's just a
00:10:09
neighbor he's a neighbor that can hear
00:10:11
us training so he comes over and asks to
00:10:14
train so he he wasn't a boxer at that
00:10:16
point never throwing a punch like he a
00:10:18
boxer in his life yeah
00:10:21
and yeah it's odd right that's odd yeah
00:10:25
so he just he just wanted to hang out
00:10:26
because he liked no he just wanted to
00:10:28
come over go he he was playing rugby
00:10:30
ricking and he want to get fit so
00:10:31
comeing to go I chucked him in a few
00:10:33
fights and it's addictive so yeah and
00:10:37
you I mean there's a big difference
00:10:39
between going to your neighbor's place
00:10:40
and you know hanging out with the
00:10:42
boys you know sparring a bit on the deck
00:10:44
to actually like getting in a ring and
00:10:46
having a having you know there's a
00:10:47
difference between like working you on
00:10:48
the on the pads yeah yeah to actually
00:10:50
getting in a ring I've never been one to
00:10:53
want to train people I hate that I don't
00:10:54
like training people for nothing like
00:10:57
and like I don't like if you're going to
00:10:58
come over let's have play boxing I don't
00:11:00
want to play boxing or rather do
00:11:01
something else you just send them to
00:11:03
mail as yeah so if you come to my house
00:11:05
you're going to be booked a fight real
00:11:07
quick and I've done it to everybody I
00:11:09
just make you fight well [ __ ] off yeah
00:11:13
you know that's um if I was your um
00:11:15
business development manager I'd say
00:11:17
that's a terrible business model and you
00:11:19
should be trying to get some of that
00:11:20
corporate money yeah yeah no I just hate
00:11:22
it I I really do I've never done you
00:11:24
know I've never done a one-on-one in my
00:11:25
life like a personal training thing ever
00:11:28
I just I don't know just doesn't do it
00:11:31
for me yeah this is the definite um
00:11:33
impression I get about you you care
00:11:35
you've got a big heart you're very loyal
00:11:36
you care about your Fighters you all
00:11:38
want them to reach their potential which
00:11:40
um in most cases is like world champion
00:11:42
level and you're just not driven by the
00:11:44
money at all I'm not my money helps we
00:11:47
get to a stage where we really need
00:11:49
money but my love for success for my
00:11:53
guys is massive and it's real rewarding
00:11:55
and that's why I don't I don't yeah I
00:11:59
just have no passion for getting people
00:12:01
foot and doing that sort of stuff I
00:12:03
really have a passion for the top level
00:12:05
it's such a it's a horrible it's a it's
00:12:08
a really rewarding place but it's such a
00:12:11
it's like a real high and lows you know
00:12:12
your Highs are huge and your lows are
00:12:14
really low in terms of the sport in the
00:12:17
sport when you the higher you get the
00:12:19
harder it gets and the bigger the highs
00:12:21
and the bigger the lows so I thrive off
00:12:24
that I think it's it's like a drug those
00:12:27
Highs are like a drug and then those
00:12:28
lows make the highs so much
00:12:31
more yeah cuz yeah it seems like there's
00:12:35
so so much um so so much importance in
00:12:38
boxing put on that win loss record he
00:12:40
like everything that's stupid I hate the
00:12:42
fact that they do that but it's
00:12:43
everything why why is that I don't know
00:12:46
I think the maywe the thing when he
00:12:47
started did his 50 and0 and it became a
00:12:49
thing I think before that it wasn't so
00:12:52
important I mean you need to build your
00:12:53
record and it's all part of it but there
00:12:56
is now if you lose it's a long way back
00:12:58
it makes Mak it really difficult and
00:13:00
expensive yeah yeah you just have to
00:13:03
look at like the the trajectory of
00:13:05
Joseph Parker's career right yeah yeah
00:13:07
but he's done amazing man he's he's he
00:13:11
looked like he was done a few years ago
00:13:12
he's on top of the world man he's doing
00:13:14
amazing stuff you what you what has
00:13:16
happened to Joseph Parker like from a
00:13:18
from someone that's got some good boxing
00:13:19
knowledge is is it just teaming up with
00:13:21
Andy Lee and George lockart is that what
00:13:23
made the difference yeah that would had
00:13:25
to have helped I mean his attitude and
00:13:28
he took big fight and he won he fought
00:13:31
Deontay W and he beat him every round I
00:13:34
thought pretty much so that's why I mean
00:13:36
he he he did amazing he had to win that
00:13:38
fight if he didn't if he had got knocked
00:13:40
out in that fight he's probably finished
00:13:42
but he took the risk and if you take the
00:13:43
risk the rewards are huge in there and
00:13:45
now he's beating that chinan and yeah
00:13:48
good luck to him yeah how good and so
00:13:51
what about you so when did the plumbing
00:13:53
come into your life cuz that's another
00:13:54
thing so Jerome Jerome pampalone the
00:13:57
neighbor who heard you fighting came
00:13:58
over to see what was going on and is now
00:14:00
one of the best fighters in the world he
00:14:01
also works with you as a plumber yeah
00:14:04
he's just quit on
00:14:06
me um yeah I've always been a plumber so
00:14:10
right through my boxing everything I
00:14:12
always work for people as a plumber and
00:14:13
probably I don't know around when I got
00:14:16
married which is probably 11 years ago
00:14:18
or something I started a business and it
00:14:20
was just me so I was a maintenance
00:14:22
plumber and then Jerome he was going to
00:14:25
be a mechanic which I thought was a dumb
00:14:27
idea because he'd be stuck under a
00:14:28
houseold sorry under a car all day and
00:14:31
said why don't you try Plumbing so I got
00:14:32
him a job with someone else but that
00:14:33
didn't really work out so I ended up
00:14:35
with them basically by default he was
00:14:38
terrible plumber he's a bit better
00:14:41
now so yeah it's just been me and Jerome
00:14:43
for like the last seven years plumbing
00:14:46
and he's just given it away to to focus
00:14:49
on to focus on boxing which it's time to
00:14:51
do that like he's till a couple of
00:14:53
months ago he was full-time plumber you
00:14:56
got his qualification the deal was you
00:14:57
got to get qualified and right yeah so
00:14:59
do you the impression I get is that you
00:15:01
sort of um you sort of have the plumbing
00:15:04
to basically fund your your your side
00:15:07
hustle or hobby whatever you want to
00:15:08
call it which is peach boxing yeah the
00:15:10
Plumbing's been awesome man Plumbing's
00:15:11
bought me everything I've ever you know
00:15:13
Plumbing's great you still enjoy it yeah
00:15:17
I've never liked it until now and now
00:15:20
the
00:15:20
boxing's getting so serious and stuff
00:15:24
and like I said you got big highs and
00:15:26
lows coming home and crawling under a
00:15:28
house and fixing a pipe quite nice M
00:15:30
sounds weird E I used to hate it but now
00:15:32
it's like Fu nothing to worry about man
00:15:35
just no one to talk to just go do a
00:15:37
little bit of Plumbing it's actually
00:15:38
quite nice to be honest has has that
00:15:41
changed since you've had kids like you
00:15:42
got four quite young kids so is it just
00:15:44
the peace in quiet and the serenity of
00:15:46
being under a house on your own nah N I
00:15:49
hate being by myself that's one thing
00:15:50
about me I do hate being by myself yeah
00:15:52
but I think the the plumbing things it's
00:15:55
just normal life sometimes sometimes you
00:15:58
go overse or you do like a big fight
00:16:00
there's so much plastic [ __ ] from
00:16:02
the outside things look really cool but
00:16:04
it's a lot of hard work and you deal
00:16:06
with a lot of [ __ ] and just coming
00:16:08
home and to normal life is nice I like
00:16:12
that yeah I do um get that impression
00:16:15
about you that you've you've got a
00:16:17
strong [ __ ] detector um but like
00:16:20
from a pluming perspective like how do
00:16:22
you um like how do you handle like the
00:16:25
invoicing and you're dealing with
00:16:27
clients and things like that I do mostly
00:16:29
real estate agents so right I deal with
00:16:31
them but I handr write all my invoices
00:16:34
take a photo and send it to my brother's
00:16:36
mrss who's my office lady cuz I I can't
00:16:39
even use a computer yeah I'm like in the
00:16:42
60s so seriously I can't type I can't do
00:16:45
anything so I yeah I write handw write
00:16:48
everything and I photo it so it works
00:16:50
and even my um even my books for when
00:16:54
people get paid in that I write like the
00:16:55
address and the amount of money and I
00:16:57
tick it off when they pay like old
00:16:58
school stuff
00:17:00
but that's what happens when you don't
00:17:02
do much to school I guess yeah when did
00:17:04
you leave school did you leave quite
00:17:05
early or no we just didn't do anything I
00:17:08
went to kelston which was a sports
00:17:10
oriented school so school was a boy
00:17:13
school but it was fun it was fun it was
00:17:15
HS of sport you know was a blowy kind of
00:17:18
school
00:17:19
and no one really did any work regarding
00:17:23
school work so yeah yeah were you so do
00:17:26
you think you were maybe quite smart but
00:17:28
you just never tapped into it or I'm
00:17:31
[ __ ] hopeless with that sort of thing
00:17:33
yeah yeah but you never sort of applied
00:17:35
yourself I never applied myself but I'd
00:17:37
be the sort of kid that would have to
00:17:38
work really hard to okay to pass stuff I
00:17:41
pass I failed my Plumbing exam like
00:17:42
seven times put it that
00:17:45
way no one can argue with your
00:17:47
persistence and
00:17:49
determination got no choice so um I had
00:17:52
you know Eugene Beerman very well not
00:17:54
well but I know yeah I had him on the
00:17:55
podcast a couple of weeks ago and um
00:17:57
with City kickboxing he described it as
00:17:59
um a gym for broken songs yeah how how
00:18:02
would you describe Peach boxing is is
00:18:04
that something you thought about yeah I
00:18:06
think
00:18:07
that I think good boxers come from a
00:18:10
place where they're looking for
00:18:12
something it's like a a what would you
00:18:15
call
00:18:16
it I'll give you some examples so you've
00:18:18
got you got someone like Mia who comes
00:18:21
from the from Hell getting bashed and
00:18:24
blah blah blah and you got a guy like
00:18:26
David light who comes from being
00:18:27
homeschooled
00:18:29
um his back is like homeschooled wealthy
00:18:33
parents so you got them but they're both
00:18:35
coming to find the same thing so David
00:18:38
was this kid that didn't how to relate
00:18:39
to people and that never really been in
00:18:41
the real world because he comes from
00:18:42
money and then May comes from [ __ ]
00:18:45
really and he so they find this medium
00:18:48
boxing gives people that Medium you know
00:18:50
that just this great leveler that they
00:18:52
have in common find what you need in
00:18:53
that middle Zone yeah don't explain it
00:18:56
but you know what I mean you you yeah no
00:18:58
you love it I can tell your eyes are
00:18:59
almost light up when you talk about it
00:19:00
it's almost quite poetic in a
00:19:02
way um so how do how do you make money
00:19:06
out of peach boxing like if you take the
00:19:08
boxers overseas and they have a fight
00:19:09
and you get a cut of the money that way
00:19:11
what do you charge do you charge them a
00:19:13
fee to train so I've got
00:19:16
um I never used to have any people
00:19:19
besides Fighters so pitch boxing
00:19:21
basically didn't earn any money but now
00:19:24
my fighs I take a fee off the pros which
00:19:26
isn't doesn't pay for much unless you're
00:19:29
winning world titles you ain't get any
00:19:30
[ __ ] we ain't winning yet um and we've
00:19:33
got like a corporate sort of class at
00:19:34
night now um that has about 40 to 50
00:19:37
members which is really cool it's like
00:19:38
another community that we've kind of got
00:19:40
so those people pay which helps um yeah
00:19:44
and it's it's a hell of the setup you
00:19:47
got now I haven't been there in person
00:19:48
but I've seen on YouTube but if you can
00:19:50
imagine so where is it like at the foot
00:19:51
of the white teries it yeah it's in
00:19:53
Henderson Valley so it's rural we've got
00:19:55
like an acre property but all the
00:19:56
neighbors is Bush yes you got your your
00:19:59
house there and then it's like a massive
00:20:00
sort of almost like a like a steel Farm
00:20:02
Barn yeah it's like a we just bought a
00:20:04
total span garage yeah so it's massive
00:20:07
right like the size of say half a dozen
00:20:09
garages yeah yeah it's
00:20:11
210 square
00:20:13
meters and I've heard you um describe
00:20:17
your style As Old School uh what does
00:20:19
that mean in a like a boxing gym
00:20:21
environment I just think Basics and that
00:20:23
are important I just hate flash stuff
00:20:26
and I think I don't know I I I feel I
00:20:29
might be wrong but I feel like I'm
00:20:30
disliked by a lot of boxing people
00:20:32
because of my kind of attitude but my
00:20:35
stuff is like we're winning you aren't
00:20:36
and a lot of it everyone wants to be
00:20:39
flash man everyone wants to be this new
00:20:41
age and I don't know they watch they
00:20:43
want to be Russians they want just be a
00:20:45
kiwi and be basic and get your [ __ ] done
00:20:47
and and you'll succeed and I think
00:20:49
boxing is basic and people are looking
00:20:53
for looking to complicate a pretty basic
00:20:56
thing and my my attitude is it's get the
00:20:58
the basics really [ __ ] right and the
00:21:00
higher up these guys get the more we
00:21:02
need these Basics right yeah where where
00:21:05
does that come from is that how you were
00:21:06
raised or is it your friend group
00:21:07
growing up or I don't know I don't know
00:21:10
I mean I had a lot of different training
00:21:11
I
00:21:12
don't I made my own way through boxing
00:21:16
um with my ideas and stuff I see a lot
00:21:18
of stuff I don't like I think in life
00:21:20
you learn more of what you don't like
00:21:23
the you know I wouldn't want to do that
00:21:25
I don't yeah um I've my sort of boxing
00:21:29
philosophies and how I want to do stuff
00:21:31
and I'm open to getting better and I
00:21:34
have been lately going overseason trying
00:21:35
to trying to get
00:21:37
better how do you mean get better get
00:21:39
better at more I did be be a better
00:21:41
Coach right um
00:21:45
yeah I think it's important for coaches
00:21:47
to to always be trying to get better so
00:21:50
as you're not you're kind of where
00:21:51
you're at so so do do you have to deal
00:21:54
with um like negotiations and stuff with
00:21:56
other promoters and yeah yeah yeah yeah
00:21:58
I deal with it cuz I managed me an elen
00:22:01
and my wife we managed them but yeah I
00:22:03
hate promoters I don't care if they
00:22:05
listen they just but there's a lot of
00:22:08
seems like there's a lot of snakes in
00:22:09
this sport eh have you it's it's I think
00:22:13
what's hard when it comes to remot is is
00:22:15
boxing is a real business and the way I
00:22:17
do it I don't think of it as a business
00:22:20
you know you do it because you love your
00:22:21
Fighters really and they're like family
00:22:23
and then but the promoters they're just
00:22:25
a piece of meat and if they don't when
00:22:27
they're gone you know it's pretty cut
00:22:28
throat so I struggle with that have you
00:22:31
had anything to do with Eddie Hearn do
00:22:32
you know Eddie Hearn I've only had one
00:22:34
dealing with Eddie Hearn it wasn't good
00:22:36
that was regarding Mia so we're dealing
00:22:37
with him
00:22:38
again soon um so Mia's got a big fight
00:22:42
coming up at the end of the year and
00:22:43
it's Eddie H's girl but they're making
00:22:45
it really difficult those gu I mean you
00:22:47
can't blame them because Mia is not
00:22:49
Eddie hn girl so he wants to fight his
00:22:50
own girls to keep it all in house kind
00:22:52
of so they kind of change dates and make
00:22:55
life difficult for me and I don't have
00:22:57
much of a say like if you're ringing the
00:22:59
prom
00:23:00
uh if you're ringing like the ibf or the
00:23:03
sanctioning bodies Eddie H's paying a
00:23:05
lot of money that don't care so much
00:23:07
about me if we have an argument yeah
00:23:09
well you look at the like David Higgins
00:23:11
had to work very hard to get Joseph
00:23:12
Parker in there didn't he it's uh yeah
00:23:15
let's okay let's talk about Mia for a
00:23:16
bit so um you've been
00:23:19
um instrumental not not just in her
00:23:22
career but in her life as well so MIA
00:23:25
starts boxing early on like this is
00:23:26
pre-marriage so you've known for how
00:23:30
long nearly 30 years 30 yeah you're
00:23:33
nearly 30 years so when so when you
00:23:36
first meet me and she starts boxing
00:23:38
she's like a in her 18s no she would
00:23:40
have been 14 14 okay so is this when you
00:23:42
just you've got a a rope section on your
00:23:44
back deck no [ __ ] no this is years
00:23:46
before that so I'm like 21 yeah I had a
00:23:49
rope section on my deck that's like I'm
00:23:51
32 okay you know yeah so so you just
00:23:54
happened to be at the same gym or
00:23:55
something okay we trained at the same
00:23:57
gym right
00:23:59
and uh yeah what are your memories of
00:24:00
her back then like a young Mia M was
00:24:02
Choice me is just a young Mary girl
00:24:05
we're in like a flash like the gym was
00:24:08
kind of flash all kind of flash people
00:24:10
so I didn't fit at all and she kind of
00:24:13
didn't fit I was like she don't she
00:24:16
either oh hang out with
00:24:19
there oh that's cool and then um would
00:24:22
does she seem like a good boxer back
00:24:24
then or she was she was she was a good
00:24:25
boxer 100% yeah yeah and then um so then
00:24:29
she just sort of falls off the radar and
00:24:30
she gets gets married and you um you you
00:24:33
don't you see each other and passing
00:24:35
over that time or you passing but not a
00:24:37
lot yeah yeah so there was those years I
00:24:39
didn't see her probably [ __ ] I don't
00:24:43
know I she I shouldn't say that but she
00:24:47
came to one of my engagement parties
00:24:49
which wasn't my
00:24:51
wife one of them how many were there
00:24:54
well there's a
00:24:55
few um
00:25:00
that has to be yeah she came to that um
00:25:04
I tell you I did I did see her but not
00:25:07
as much you saw her around so um yeah
00:25:10
and uh I mean it's been well documented
00:25:11
like I've I've had her on the podcast
00:25:13
and she did a piece with um Sunday the
00:25:15
TV show um she got married and it was
00:25:18
like a horrible decade like an
00:25:21
unimaginably horrible so did you see her
00:25:24
around or did she sort of like try and
00:25:25
avoid you over that time yeah I didn't
00:25:27
see her around I didn't know the extent
00:25:28
of anything that was going on I actually
00:25:30
saw her I still couldn't see it I saw
00:25:32
her I can't remember where it was but
00:25:33
she was with her mom and she had a neck
00:25:36
brace and that think was the last time
00:25:38
she' been bash really badly and she was
00:25:41
it wasn't good so that was that was
00:25:44
quite shocking um but that was that was
00:25:47
probably right at the end but yeah I
00:25:50
didn't I didn't know what was happening
00:25:52
so when you when you see with a neck
00:25:54
brace on like what's your what's your
00:25:56
interaction what do you what do you say
00:25:57
or do
00:25:59
oh [ __ ] me and here straight up who the
00:26:00
[ __ ] did that to
00:26:02
you they Bea him around the bush was he
00:26:05
truthful with you yeah 100% yeah and and
00:26:09
then what what do you you say [ __ ] girl
00:26:11
get you got to get out of there or yeah
00:26:13
I think was done I I I I
00:26:16
think I don't know I think
00:26:18
he I don't know what happened there he
00:26:21
might have been in jail I I don't I
00:26:23
don't know I don't yeah yeah so then is
00:26:25
that sort of how you reconnected no no
00:26:27
no no no
00:26:28
was ages again after that right yeah
00:26:31
like how much how much longer are we
00:26:32
talking couple years or yeah easy right
00:26:35
she came to my
00:26:38
house okay it would have been way way
00:26:41
after that she came to my house she
00:26:43
knocked on the door with her kids and
00:26:45
was just standing there my M was like
00:26:47
who the [ __ ] is this and I was like yeah
00:26:50
also Elena your wife and Mia had never
00:26:53
never met not not really and then um
00:26:56
yeah she that would have been probably
00:26:58
three or four years ago she had a brand
00:27:00
new baby and a one-year-old so we had
00:27:04
dinner was have feed and
00:27:06
then yeah she said she wants to get fit
00:27:09
so I gave her basically a training
00:27:11
session turned it pro and the rest is
00:27:14
history you you've accelerated past a
00:27:17
lot of the story in like that 8 seconds
00:27:20
there it's been um it's been a hell of a
00:27:22
partnership and um I mean you're you're
00:27:24
incredibly humble about it but like the
00:27:26
the impact you've had on your life is um
00:27:28
like I don't know almost like a North
00:27:29
star or whatever you want to call it
00:27:31
it's you know it's been incredible and
00:27:33
she definitely doesn't take that for
00:27:35
granted she even yeah yeah it's quite
00:27:38
funny I've done some public speaking
00:27:40
things with her we we do some Q&A events
00:27:41
and and every time I do it um she sort
00:27:44
of comes out with a new like surprise
00:27:46
detail about one of the beatings that
00:27:48
happened over that that decade it was
00:27:49
[ __ ] horrendous like just
00:27:52
unimaginable yeah unimaginable horror
00:27:54
and then she yeah last time I saw she
00:27:56
told me that um her her um attacker her
00:28:00
ex-husband he's he's out of jail now and
00:28:02
he like stalked her in a car one day and
00:28:05
I I said to him Mia that's did you did
00:28:07
you go to the the police or anything and
00:28:08
she was like oh no it was just sort of
00:28:09
funny and then I told Isaac about it and
00:28:11
Isaac was like meia that's not [ __ ]
00:28:13
cool you know we're deal with it now but
00:28:15
yeah it's not cool it's like the last
00:28:17
chapter of that story for her is now
00:28:19
because he is out of jail but but he
00:28:21
won't be going there again so when she
00:28:25
when she knocked on your door and came
00:28:28
to you with her kids and said I want to
00:28:29
get fit M um you said quite early on
00:28:32
that you think she haded on her to be a
00:28:34
world champion yeah I think that's the
00:28:35
first thing I said yeah well I don't
00:28:37
want to mck around like I said I have no
00:28:40
I just don't have any driver unless
00:28:41
they're going to be fighting so yeah and
00:28:44
I knew she would fight me as a fighter
00:28:47
so even though she said she's not going
00:28:48
to she's going to so yeah and then we we
00:28:52
made the plan I just start chucking them
00:28:54
in fights they don't have time to
00:28:55
think and yeah
00:28:59
you know she's a world Jan so it's
00:29:01
pretty cool it's a reward I mean that's
00:29:03
the cool part about coaching that shit's
00:29:04
rewarding like the life change and it is
00:29:08
a bit of a Cinderella story that one
00:29:10
like it's out of it how it's only been a
00:29:12
year man since she like won the world
00:29:14
title and the change like she's was on
00:29:17
the benefit a year ago and now she's
00:29:20
going real good she's public speaking
00:29:22
she's you know she's this Confident
00:29:24
Woman paying her own bills you know kids
00:29:27
have [ __ ] proud of her it's it's
00:29:29
pretty cool well she came here and sat
00:29:31
on the chair urine like um maybe 15
00:29:34
months ago and back then she she ended
00:29:37
up coming on oh maybe she came with um
00:29:39
Liam lonigan but she she we had to
00:29:41
reschedule a couple of times because she
00:29:43
wanted to come with either you or your
00:29:44
wife as like a support person now she's
00:29:46
fine like she doesn't need it yeah yeah
00:29:48
well because back then she was
00:29:49
vulnerable man
00:29:51
and oh yeah she couldn't and she was
00:29:55
really naive she just she was like an8
00:29:58
year old you know what I mean like she
00:29:59
just didn't have those life skills
00:30:02
to yeah but that's so recent that's it's
00:30:05
amazing the change in a yes what I'm
00:30:07
saying you just if we told like people
00:30:09
wouldn't believe it when they seeing now
00:30:11
like how it was m and she's she's doing
00:30:14
and she's been more amazing every day
00:30:16
you know like she's growing as a person
00:30:18
every day it's pretty cool yeah she's so
00:30:21
cool and just so um so unaffected by her
00:30:26
by her level of Fame and the money she's
00:30:27
got coming in like if you if you saw her
00:30:30
you'd still think she's got like zero
00:30:31
doar on the bank account like she's just
00:30:33
got no sort of um appreciation or want
00:30:37
for anything or care for the money that
00:30:39
she's BR enjoying her life but she
00:30:40
should you know I did was funny last um
00:30:44
last week it was the what are the woman
00:30:47
All Blacks called the S the black black
00:30:49
FS the black FS they asked me at to give
00:30:52
out the jumpers for the black fs and it
00:30:55
was about a year ago I think she won the
00:30:57
world title and we asked Ruby tu's
00:31:01
manager if Mia and Ruby Tui could do
00:31:03
some media together because it' be good
00:31:05
for Mia and they're like oh sorry but
00:31:07
she's not famous enough and then this
00:31:10
year a year later Mia's giving Ruby to
00:31:13
who Jersey as the special guest like
00:31:16
that's pretty cool like in one year that
00:31:18
is great you know what I mean yeah and
00:31:19
even a couple of weeks ago she did like
00:31:21
a like a hype up speech to the Chiefs at
00:31:24
one of their trainings mid week how how
00:31:26
are you how are you finding all the
00:31:27
stuff as um like a distraction in terms
00:31:29
of your training and things like that
00:31:31
like how you've managed to putting
00:31:32
everything in I'm just letting you
00:31:34
around with it and enjoy it um she's got
00:31:37
a fight in 10 weeks now so I'll start
00:31:39
clamping down a little bit but I just
00:31:41
want to see her smiling and enjoying
00:31:43
life man that's what's about with her is
00:31:45
just go go enjoy it go do everything
00:31:48
some people will be like [ __ ] she should
00:31:50
be doing who cares T boxing go enjoy it
00:31:53
you know sure win but she's she's one of
00:31:56
the one of the most um happy and
00:31:58
positive and grateful people that I
00:31:59
think I've ever met you know it's I me
00:32:02
be easy for her to have a chip on her
00:32:03
shoulder cuz she's been you know through
00:32:05
what what the adversity she's been
00:32:07
through but um I've just never seen her
00:32:09
anything but completely happy you do you
00:32:12
you yeah I think but also you I think
00:32:14
you got to be careful that because I
00:32:15
think people like that they definitely
00:32:17
have their cries and this stuff and like
00:32:19
you're saying with the ex partner
00:32:20
recently and getting out of jail and
00:32:23
stuff like that it's always there so
00:32:26
you've got to always kind of uh be there
00:32:29
if if needed in the sense that they can
00:32:31
talk to you or or you my way do I'm
00:32:34
always asking them questions do you
00:32:36
think you do you think she wears like a
00:32:38
good mask like she's like good at
00:32:39
pretending you don't go through all that
00:32:41
[ __ ] and it just disappears yeah yeah
00:32:42
yeah you don't it's impossible yeah so
00:32:45
but she's one of the most genuine people
00:32:47
around me you know
00:32:49
so yeah things will just get it I mean
00:32:52
look things get easier Time Heals yeah
00:32:54
so and it hasn't been that long so yeah
00:32:56
yeah this yeah I agree this B to be like
00:32:58
some P PTSD or scaring there what what
00:33:01
about um her relationship with your son
00:33:02
Zen how old how old is Zen Zen's nine
00:33:06
this is a hilarious hilarious
00:33:08
relationship because um You So you
00:33:12
you're sort of her head coach but I feel
00:33:14
like Zen is sort of like your understudy
00:33:17
yeah how would you I don't really know
00:33:20
like that's kind of weird but it's kind
00:33:22
of cool like Mir and Zen are just like
00:33:25
best mates so they have been for ages
00:33:27
and and he started sort of joining him
00:33:30
with the training and then he just kind
00:33:32
of got obsessed with it to be honest I
00:33:34
mean he loves boxing he's training
00:33:35
himself he's helping train their team
00:33:37
and so like that but he's got this real
00:33:39
thing for me he loves me and um he goes
00:33:43
to all the media stuff and I don't know
00:33:45
they're just like old buddies and yeah
00:33:46
he does coach her like he really helps
00:33:48
her and you got to make sure he's saying
00:33:50
the right stuff now cuz she she listens
00:33:52
to him so it's important but I think
00:33:54
he's just like a mate too he's someone
00:33:57
that
00:33:58
just hangs out with her with no baggage
00:34:01
CU he's so young and she likes that and
00:34:03
he just adores her yeah and he takes it
00:34:05
really seriously as well doesn't serious
00:34:08
like she told me he you know he calls
00:34:09
her in the evening for like a chat and
00:34:12
what sort of what sort of discussions
00:34:13
are they having what's he what's he what
00:34:15
what advice is he giving you I don't
00:34:17
know I don't even know I get left out
00:34:20
these days oh yeah I don't know it's
00:34:24
funny she she had a fight um God she she
00:34:27
said so many fights but one recently and
00:34:29
she won he was like sobbing
00:34:31
uncontrollably in the ring afterwards
00:34:32
what was that I think it just all got
00:34:34
too much for him he's quite sensitive as
00:34:36
in and it's a like it's a me and my wife
00:34:40
argue about it a lot like it's a lot for
00:34:42
a young kid to kind of do and he gets a
00:34:45
lot of cool [ __ ] out of it but it's it's
00:34:47
it's quite stressful and stuff you know
00:34:50
and he's in the corner and it's I think
00:34:52
he's just crying cuz it just all em
00:34:54
motioning was too much wasn't cuz she
00:34:56
didn't go well did great but yeah it's a
00:34:59
lot for a young kid and we still kind
00:35:02
of discuss it regularly and she yells at
00:35:05
me that it's my fault and I yell at it
00:35:07
it's her fault but I think it's a
00:35:08
wonderful thing at the same time it's
00:35:09
just making sure he's not getting too
00:35:13
old too quick I guess yeah but he get
00:35:15
some amazing things with is amazing with
00:35:17
him you know
00:35:18
me is Awesome with him so there's no
00:35:21
problem there oh yeah and it's not just
00:35:23
like a it's not just a petty thing like
00:35:25
it's not like it's the coach's son I
00:35:27
better humor him like she um she really
00:35:30
respects the the job that he does yeah
00:35:32
yeah yeah like I said they're just old
00:35:33
mates they really are they are
00:35:36
it's it's it's cool you see you you have
00:35:39
four kids is he the eldest of the four
00:35:41
yeah he's the oldest he's what's he nine
00:35:43
I got a seven-year-old boy a
00:35:45
six-year-old girl two and a half year
00:35:48
old boy I it makes sense that that um he
00:35:50
would have gravitated um towards this
00:35:52
because this through his entire life
00:35:55
like your dad's been boxing and training
00:35:57
boxers at but me it's like back to the
00:35:58
me and Zen thing is like Mia's been
00:36:02
around and in my house like Mia's at
00:36:05
home every day Mia has lived in my house
00:36:08
when she's needed to for periods of time
00:36:10
um so she is completely part of the
00:36:13
family Mia comes and goes as she wants
00:36:15
she's always a bed there for her or you
00:36:17
know what I mean so it she is family so
00:36:20
as much as I've got that bomb which is
00:36:22
great it's not just this random random
00:36:25
connection like she's you know what I
00:36:27
mean she's lived in our house and she
00:36:30
she's been in a house more than anyone
00:36:31
else yeah so all right let's talk about
00:36:34
the personal stuff for a second there
00:36:35
was um there's a woman's weekly story
00:36:38
that came out last November by the way
00:36:39
is this the first time you've been in
00:36:40
woman's weekly was that with my family
00:36:43
yeah no it was actually
00:36:45
not oh really you're regular no I did uh
00:36:49
but they brush your taros off or yeah
00:36:51
they they did that one now the other
00:36:53
ones they said they actually were nice
00:36:55
and they like messaged to mind if we
00:36:57
take
00:36:59
oh um now I was in the woman's I'm sure
00:37:02
was the woman's my brother who fought on
00:37:05
the fight for life oh that's right so
00:37:07
your brother JY so my brother's gay and
00:37:10
they did a thing on and The Way It Was
00:37:12
Written you couldn't have it like that
00:37:14
these days but yeah so my brother's gay
00:37:16
and it was kind of on his gay art
00:37:18
exhibition or something and me training
00:37:19
it was this I don't know story but that
00:37:22
was the first time was in there yeah so
00:37:24
um so your brother Jesse pit he's um I
00:37:26
think he works in Media in the UK at the
00:37:28
moment but he's big in the theater scene
00:37:30
he was on um news Hub for a while he
00:37:32
even had a p on Shand Street once true
00:37:35
and he did one of those fight for lives
00:37:36
and he fought um Shelton who was in the
00:37:37
B blind spot yeah so they did they
00:37:40
wanted to thr an article on that because
00:37:41
they were like I don't know they're
00:37:44
trying to work out how me and him my
00:37:45
brothers and how we're friends but
00:37:46
actually me and j a real good friends
00:37:47
he's he's a cool dude you very very
00:37:51
different they are you can see why they
00:37:53
were interested on the surface there's a
00:37:55
lot of differences but
00:37:57
I think we're quite similar in a lot of
00:37:58
ways as well yeah yeah you know what I
00:38:00
mean like we're into completely separate
00:38:02
stuff with the boxing and the art and
00:38:04
that but I
00:38:06
yeah yeah I really like him how um yeah
00:38:10
how did that fight go so he got smash
00:38:13
yeah hopeless it was never going to work
00:38:15
I don't want him to do it went exactly
00:38:17
how I thought it was going to go but I
00:38:20
paying him and he was going we'll take
00:38:22
the money off the to all right so so so
00:38:24
you sort of like trained him a little
00:38:26
bit I trained him for it I didn't want
00:38:28
him my mom said I had to I was like
00:38:29
there's no way like he's going to yeah
00:38:32
but yeah he got paid enough to go to
00:38:35
England and carry on so that was that
00:38:37
was fine he didn't get hurt okay so
00:38:39
there was your there was your you have
00:38:40
like big gloves don't they no oh yeah
00:38:43
yeah bigger than yeah yeah yeah I guess
00:38:45
that was your first time in um the
00:38:46
woman's magazine um second time came a
00:38:49
story last November um with your wife
00:38:52
Elena yeah um and she talks about how
00:38:55
you guys met and how she and her words
00:38:57
it was the opposite of love at first
00:38:59
sight yeah it was she was the she she
00:39:03
was a receptionist at my gym so she kind
00:39:06
of it was like I don't know it was on
00:39:07
the shore but it was like quite a tough
00:39:09
guys kind of CH I don't like it so I
00:39:11
came from West all the way to the shore
00:39:13
and they're all like bouncers and
00:39:15
they're all their
00:39:16
friends so I just walk in and look at
00:39:19
her like push a button let me in we
00:39:22
there was nothing for about 6 months
00:39:24
yeah she says you didn't even like sort
00:39:25
of talk to her or acknowledge her for
00:39:27
like months what are your Recollections
00:39:29
of that what's your of the story it was
00:39:31
pretty true but did you think she was
00:39:33
like attractive or no not really no no I
00:39:36
like they had bad attitude to people in
00:39:39
the gym so I was just sort of group
00:39:41
there of that was like [ __ ] it I'm
00:39:42
coming to do my training and I'm leaving
00:39:44
I probably had a bad at it too oh you
00:39:47
you were still you were still drinking
00:39:49
then yeah I was still drinking then yeah
00:39:52
yeah oh you mentioned before you're
00:39:53
numer how many engagements did you have
00:39:55
before you found the right one she was
00:39:56
my third third time
00:39:58
so what happened to the so you didn't
00:39:59
get married no none of them got married
00:40:01
so two engagements yeah how what
00:40:03
happened with those one was young that
00:40:07
didn't last long and then the next the
00:40:09
next one they lasted a few weeks I think
00:40:12
but I don't know I was Liv in for a
00:40:17
while it's good that good that you
00:40:19
waited because everything worked out
00:40:20
good so so after six months of um seeing
00:40:23
Elena every other day and not speaking
00:40:26
and her thinking you're an arrogant jerk
00:40:29
yeah um what happens then oh I think I
00:40:33
probably liked it a little bit
00:40:35
then um my coach was real John um John
00:40:40
mcco died recently actually Joel John
00:40:43
and he
00:40:44
um he used to yell out at me like don't
00:40:47
you go for near the woman in this gym
00:40:49
and blah because I'd always be being a
00:40:52
rap bag no matter what it
00:40:53
was and um he I think he went to Aussie
00:40:57
and I said to him and I asked her out on
00:40:59
the date I thought well I'm going to ask
00:41:01
her out it was more to get at him than
00:41:03
to take her
00:41:05
out and yeah and she said yes and I
00:41:08
remember taking her out and I wasn't
00:41:09
drinking I hadn't stopped drinking but I
00:41:11
didn't drink and I took her out I was
00:41:15
driving and she just got hammered she
00:41:18
just kept drinking oh it's cost me a
00:41:19
fortune I was like [ __ ]
00:41:22
this oh so you went you went drinking
00:41:24
that night cuz you were like sober dry
00:41:26
no I had like I tried to give up
00:41:27
drinking like had like 6 months off yeah
00:41:29
but then she made me fall back on I
00:41:31
blame her n and yeah so that's how we
00:41:34
met I took her and then we all been
00:41:36
together ever since yeah well how good
00:41:38
was it so like um when you started
00:41:41
started you know dating each other was
00:41:43
it so like love at first sight from that
00:41:45
moment like I don't know I it was weird
00:41:48
we um I had a fight I was on David Tua
00:41:52
versus Monty Barrett wow and I wasn't
00:41:54
meant to
00:41:55
win like I was was and they were paying
00:41:58
2 and a half Grand and she was going to
00:41:59
go to Japan we'd only been together a
00:42:01
couple of months I said if you if I W
00:42:04
I'll give you the money and I'll come to
00:42:05
Japan I'll meet you over there and I won
00:42:08
so that was it I flew to Japan four
00:42:10
months later and they already had like a
00:42:13
ring really for me to propose to it was
00:42:15
like a setup you I proposed to and then
00:42:17
a year later we got married and the rest
00:42:18
is history yeah well and it's incredible
00:42:21
what you guys have done so you got four
00:42:22
kids four kids under the age of 10 yeah
00:42:25
um you got the the plumbing business
00:42:27
and this um Peach boxing business which
00:42:29
you both run together she's got a big
00:42:31
part in that right yeah well she's full
00:42:32
she's more full-time than me now to be
00:42:34
honest so that's cool it's a cool
00:42:36
partnership was she so you said you had
00:42:39
like a an abstinence period with
00:42:40
drinking and then um she she got you
00:42:42
started again did she ultimately get you
00:42:45
stop or did you did you decide you had
00:42:47
to stop for yourself or things got
00:42:49
really bad so I gave up boxing and then
00:42:51
things were bad so but me and her were
00:42:53
like real good drinking buddies so I'd
00:42:55
go everywhere with her but we would get
00:42:56
ham would go out 5 days a week it was
00:42:59
fun we' fly overseas to drink but then
00:43:02
we had kids and I carried on and she
00:43:04
stopped
00:43:06
and yeah I drink every day and it was
00:43:09
just got worse and worse and then pretty
00:43:11
much she left and I decided to
00:43:14
stop and I haven't drunk now for seven
00:43:17
years now yeah how yeah how bad how bad
00:43:21
what's the were you drinking for a
00:43:22
reason you know how a lot of people are
00:43:23
drinking cuz they're trying to I think I
00:43:25
was bored I was always a bad Drinker get
00:43:29
but I always had something to maybe stop
00:43:30
for a bit for or not drink in the week
00:43:32
cuz you got a fight coming up or
00:43:33
suddenly you didn't have that so so you
00:43:35
you did have that sort of discipline
00:43:37
where if you had something on you could
00:43:39
stop but I think with the addiction it
00:43:41
got worse and worse as I got older so by
00:43:43
the end of my boxing career it was like
00:43:44
it would be like I won't drink for 10
00:43:45
weeks by the end it was like I won't
00:43:47
drink for 4 days was stupid
00:43:51
um but yes I think not having boxing is
00:43:56
a big hole so you just heaps of time to
00:43:57
drink like I said me and her did it
00:43:59
together but then she stopped and I just
00:44:01
couldn't stop so how bad was it so you
00:44:05
you'd go do plumbing for the day then
00:44:07
You' get home and yeah drinking
00:44:09
everything was around drinking so I'd
00:44:11
get up in the morning and I'd go
00:44:12
plumbing and I'd work really hard till
00:44:13
lunch time and then I'd be in the pub by
00:44:16
12:30 and then I'd come home by I don't
00:44:19
know anything between 3:30 and 5 try to
00:44:23
pretend I hadn't been Dr hadn't been
00:44:25
drinking all that time
00:44:27
but this was a daily occurrence it was
00:44:30
like maybe I wouldn't do it on Monday
00:44:32
how are you getting home are you driving
00:44:34
terrible yeah drink driving just yeah
00:44:37
drinking leads to all those other bad
00:44:39
habits um what other bad were you on
00:44:42
gear as well or n not so much um I'm not
00:44:45
say I didn't take drugs because I did
00:44:46
but during the day you didn't need to
00:44:48
the only time I was an alcoholic so if I
00:44:51
ever took drugs it was to enhance my
00:44:53
drinking I to keep you sober so you
00:44:55
could keep going long never whoever a
00:44:57
drug addict um but yeah I mean of course
00:45:01
I think drinking opens up up to all
00:45:03
sorts of stupid [ __ ] what was um what
00:45:07
was you were you a beer guy or wine guy
00:45:09
or I was a beer guy yeah and I used to
00:45:11
love it I love like I us I didn't used
00:45:13
to love it I I thought I loved it you
00:45:15
know I was a bender guard just carry on
00:45:19
I think I read somewhere or I heard in
00:45:20
another podcast you you had like a sday
00:45:23
bender yeah it was dumb how how how was
00:45:26
that even doable that's crazy you got HS
00:45:29
to do that like oh just die talk about
00:45:32
depression when you finish that [ __ ]
00:45:34
it's like go to H back yeah but I
00:45:39
think yeah I don't know man I don't I
00:45:41
don't miss it now at all ever ever ever
00:45:44
ever and I some of the
00:45:47
[ __ ] I mean nothing good comes out of
00:45:49
drinking nothing good and my life's been
00:45:53
so much better without it yeah has it no
00:45:55
matter of [ __ ] you get done now like I'm
00:45:57
so I couldn't fit in where the hell
00:45:59
would you fill in having a beer see so
00:46:01
35 when you quit did you did you try um
00:46:05
yeah how did you quit did you try rehab
00:46:06
or anything I tried rehab I'd been
00:46:08
trying to quit for ages so life was [ __ ]
00:46:09
for ages and I'd been trying I tried
00:46:12
little bit to rehab little bit of this
00:46:14
but do do it for me things would put me
00:46:17
off every time and then you just relapse
00:46:19
and I remember my wife had was it cads
00:46:21
or something thing I went to and then
00:46:22
they said I could drink they limited my
00:46:25
drinking I thought this is [ __ ] the
00:46:26
best thing I've ever
00:46:28
heard was one of the re things re things
00:46:31
I'll stay here trying to e you bring
00:46:33
your card back and say here you go bab
00:46:35
I've been at rehab but I'm allowed to
00:46:37
drink I'm allowed to have 12 Beers a
00:46:40
week so I'm going to have all 12 right
00:46:42
now it's just it's a strange disease
00:46:44
isn't it cuz it's like um you even said
00:46:46
before your life was [ __ ] but it's like
00:46:48
you think well if if your life's [ __ ]
00:46:50
why can't you just stop but it's not as
00:46:51
easy as that can't stop me that's
00:46:54
um people don't get that haven't got is
00:46:57
it's an addiction and it praises and
00:46:59
when you do try and stop that's when you
00:47:01
just I remember when I stopped I said
00:47:04
you make excuses I'll be like what about
00:47:05
if we just drink when we're on a holiday
00:47:07
because there's no way we could go on a
00:47:08
holiday without drinking you just in
00:47:10
your brain it's not possible so soon as
00:47:13
you start making those deals you're
00:47:14
looking at flights like it's a real dis
00:47:16
you know what I mean you want to go H I
00:47:18
got a [ __ ] drink but that it all gets
00:47:21
easier the first Year's hell and second
00:47:24
year I find you kind of you re vent
00:47:27
yourself into the world that's the hard
00:47:28
bit cuz you everything you've done for
00:47:32
20 years you've been drunk to a certain
00:47:34
point I used to referee boxing on TV and
00:47:36
I'd be drunk people would know that like
00:47:38
w that was great [ __ ] 8 nine be down
00:47:41
so it's just what you did but you could
00:47:43
function but try and do but then you
00:47:47
become sober you can't you feel like you
00:47:49
can't do anything cuz that's your false
00:47:51
confidence you have you know what I mean
00:47:53
so that second year you go through your
00:47:55
ship first year where your still want to
00:47:57
drink hard out the second year you got
00:47:59
to come back to the world and no one's
00:48:01
nice to you like it's crazy no one's
00:48:04
like Well Done everyone's like why the
00:48:06
[ __ ] aren't you drinking you want to you
00:48:07
know it's it's bizarre you don't get
00:48:10
supported you get people look at you
00:48:12
different like why are you not having a
00:48:13
beard oh yeah it is it is strange it is
00:48:16
still it's it's the only yeah cuz I
00:48:19
think they feel like um they've lost
00:48:21
they've lost one one of them and your
00:48:23
phone doesn't go so you phone goes
00:48:25
everyone Rings you cuz your life the
00:48:26
party suddenly no one Rings you so it's
00:48:29
quite lonely that first year is lonely
00:48:31
cuz you got no mats cuz your whole life
00:48:33
revolves around who you're meeting at
00:48:34
the P you know what I mean so how did
00:48:37
yeah how did you quit the did you just s
00:48:39
of White Knuckle it no I I was actually
00:48:42
at a boxing camp and I was always the
00:48:44
one that oh let's finish let's get some
00:48:45
beers was probably 11:00 in the
00:48:47
morning drunk for about 3 or 4 hours and
00:48:51
I remember we had like a rugby league
00:48:53
reunion or something and we had bought
00:48:55
tickets to it and I was taking my wife
00:48:56
and I spent to we had it all babysitters
00:48:58
and I turned up home and after my [ __ ]
00:49:00
was gone while I was drinking she'd left
00:49:03
so like
00:49:04
yeah so that was it and I thought I'm
00:49:08
going to have to give it up so I didn't
00:49:09
give it up I went on a serious Bender
00:49:11
thought let's have one last crack let's
00:49:13
have one last about three days do three
00:49:16
days and then I'm going to ring her and
00:49:18
cry for
00:49:19
help that's the truth so we had one last
00:49:22
crack in it and then
00:49:25
um yeah to I wouldn't drink which she
00:49:27
didn't believe obviously cuz we've done
00:49:28
that time and time again I gave up I
00:49:31
gave up every like I gave Well my two
00:49:33
addictions were cigarettes as well and I
00:49:35
gave up that at the same time so it was
00:49:36
pretty tough for a while so she came
00:49:39
back on the promise that I wasn't going
00:49:41
to drink and was just stay yeah I've
00:49:45
heard you say like the um the first year
00:49:47
was really tough from a mental
00:49:50
perspective or physical like did you
00:49:51
have like physical withdrawals or no
00:49:53
just yeah physically yes but mental way
00:49:57
worse like yeah I don't know I'm just
00:50:00
the boredom and the tediousness of well
00:50:01
that's where boxing came from cuz I
00:50:03
filled my time I went mad with boxing I
00:50:04
just filled my life with boxing and that
00:50:08
kept me sober cuz everyone goes I do it
00:50:10
for my kids I do it for this what a l of
00:50:12
[ __ ] if you've got an addiction and
00:50:14
you've got [ __ ] time on your hands
00:50:16
you you're going to struggle you need to
00:50:18
fill up that time and that's what boxing
00:50:20
did just threw myself head first into
00:50:24
boxing yeah so your old your old group
00:50:27
are you still did you maintain any of
00:50:28
those relationships you still see some
00:50:31
of those people or when you get sober do
00:50:33
you realize they were all sort of based
00:50:34
around
00:50:35
alcohol yeah I I do like I I I don't
00:50:39
think they were false friendships I like
00:50:41
those people it's just it's really hard
00:50:44
you don't have a lot in common with
00:50:45
those people because it's just different
00:50:46
right and a lot of them are still
00:50:48
drinking and stuff and that's cool
00:50:49
that's fine um and if I see them or I go
00:50:53
somewhere they're there that's cool but
00:50:55
I don't have a lot of friends now I
00:50:57
still have a couple of like basically
00:50:59
school friends which I see way not
00:51:02
enough just saw a couple in the weekend
00:51:04
first time in months but I think as you
00:51:07
get older and you have kid we have a lot
00:51:09
less friends and we got the gym at home
00:51:10
so we don't really have like couples
00:51:12
coming for dinner or any of that [ __ ]
00:51:14
like we've got our Fighters and that are
00:51:16
kind of our our friends and I guess you
00:51:19
know what I mean like we don't really
00:51:20
have time for that I don't know if
00:51:21
that's a good thing or not to be
00:51:23
honest but yeah we don't have this big
00:51:27
friend group that we go out with we just
00:51:29
it's it's not a thing and when we get
00:51:31
time to ourselves it's more we'll go out
00:51:33
for dinner with the kids or something
00:51:35
like that so so in the first year you
00:51:37
think about it like most most days or
00:51:40
yeah yeah first really for a whole year
00:51:43
yeah it's like I don't know how to
00:51:45
explain it [ __ ] it it's amazing that you
00:51:47
didn't that that you you hung tight and
00:51:49
you didn't relapse cuz you know yeah but
00:51:51
my wife's hard man she's [ __ ] okay so
00:51:54
you were really scared about losing
00:51:55
everything yeah massively like she was
00:51:57
going to leave so I think you need that
00:52:00
like I get a lot of people I can the
00:52:02
cool thing about it is you can help
00:52:03
people now I'm going a place where I can
00:52:05
help people and and there's a few people
00:52:07
I'm talking to like at the moment and
00:52:08
you can really make a difference because
00:52:10
you've been there and you're not a
00:52:12
person trying to support someone not not
00:52:15
knowing what the [ __ ] going on um but
00:52:19
you need you need to be in Fair or
00:52:20
something or or you need to do rehab but
00:52:23
my rehab was coming home to the kids
00:52:26
knowing I'm going to lose it every day
00:52:27
and then filling my time with boxing and
00:52:30
crossing my fingers it'll get easier and
00:52:32
it did and I think every day got easier
00:52:36
[ __ ] you've done you've done you've done
00:52:37
so much like you've achieved so much
00:52:39
since you've given
00:52:40
up so do you think about alcohol at all
00:52:42
now now no I I think um was some pretty
00:52:47
[ __ ] things happened in the last year
00:52:50
and get David yeah yeah yeah David that
00:52:53
was terrible I just had drone loss and
00:52:56
sound like nothing but that was a real
00:52:57
big thing to me um us not not winning
00:53:01
that fight um not on drone just it's
00:53:05
disappointing the highs and the lows and
00:53:07
um but alcohol wasn't the thing I went
00:53:09
for so that shows me that I'm I'm doing
00:53:14
all right yeah and so and when you reach
00:53:16
these tough times you're not even like
00:53:17
oh I could I could do with a drink right
00:53:19
now you're not even no cuz I know if I
00:53:21
do that I'm going to lose everything
00:53:24
yeah it won't take long what what what
00:53:26
was the the the drink or the
00:53:31
siggies initially initially the siggies
00:53:34
because that physically physically and
00:53:36
that [ __ ] you know you know like smoking
00:53:39
you dying for a cigarette um but long
00:53:42
term the drink yeah like you can get
00:53:44
over your siggies but your drink stays
00:53:47
with you for a longer deeper period of
00:53:49
time siggies that initial body your body
00:53:52
your body shutting down I've never been
00:53:55
I've never I love cigarettes
00:53:58
we should have one right now [ __ ] I
00:54:00
think cig I hate Vapors I re let's smoke
00:54:04
yeah still got a you've still got like a
00:54:07
smoker's
00:54:08
voice I Haven smoke for seven I think
00:54:12
it's my voice but I I I love cigarettes
00:54:16
I love going to an old lady's house for
00:54:17
work she's like 80 years old and all the
00:54:19
curtains are yellow she's still by like
00:54:21
good on you
00:54:24
girl should how's your mental health
00:54:27
been over the years yeah it's good has
00:54:30
it yeah has it got better since you
00:54:32
stopped
00:54:33
drinking like a noticeable Improvement
00:54:35
in your mood or your state I think I
00:54:39
think we're drinking well for me when I
00:54:42
was drinking you're kind of you're
00:54:44
drinking just to not feel [ __ ] and think
00:54:48
things are cool so you're kind of
00:54:49
blocking out everything by being
00:54:51
alcoholic I and then you feel [ __ ] the
00:54:53
next day you feel [ __ ] so you drink
00:54:54
again and you just you know and then you
00:54:57
feel good again yeah it's like a hamster
00:54:59
wheel yeah it's silly but moment H good
00:55:01
man I'm like you on us good days bad
00:55:04
days um I got you know I got cool [ __ ]
00:55:07
going on in my life
00:55:09
and I'm lucky with my kids my kids are
00:55:12
all well so I can't complain I'm yeah
00:55:15
and I think um I mean this year's been
00:55:18
tough regarding boxing boxing been real
00:55:21
tough
00:55:23
um but yeah I don't know I think you
00:55:26
just think of what you're grateful for
00:55:28
and you get through every day and and
00:55:30
yeah I don't know I'm not one of these
00:55:32
big ones on even with the people in the
00:55:34
gym like everyone let's check I'm into
00:55:36
Health now I'm all hard in the [ __ ] up
00:55:38
and if I see that you actually got
00:55:40
something going on I'll pull you aside
00:55:42
and and we look what's going on I don't
00:55:45
know don't know how that fits with
00:55:47
Society these days but I I think for me
00:55:49
that works more I I already do that
00:55:51
harden up thing I can be vulnerable and
00:55:54
I can speak up if I need to but I think
00:55:58
yeah yeah who who have you got you got
00:55:59
some good friends that you you can speak
00:56:01
to if you need to or is it Elena your
00:56:02
wife or actually my wife to yeah yeah
00:56:05
she she knows me inside that she knows
00:56:07
if she knows when something's up if
00:56:09
there's issues but there's not you
00:56:11
know my sort of thing I don't suck for
00:56:13
more than day get on with I'm real hard
00:56:16
on myself about just getting on with
00:56:18
stuff so last good yeah you mentioned
00:56:21
you mentioned the Gratitude thing before
00:56:22
that's that's a big thing he like if you
00:56:24
can um you think of what the things that
00:56:27
you're happy for rather than the things
00:56:29
that you're unhappy because you don't
00:56:30
have Life's a lot better yeah I think
00:56:33
the older you get like when you're young
00:56:36
it's hard to think like that and it's
00:56:38
hard to it's easy to be pissed off with
00:56:40
the world and I've been like I've been
00:56:41
pissed off the world a lot but now I'm
00:56:45
really try you try I think it's real
00:56:46
positive thing to try and think of
00:56:49
things you're grateful for and you know
00:56:52
there's a lot of people that have got
00:56:53
[ __ ] so much worse than you so you
00:56:55
should almost feel guilty by you you
00:56:57
absolutely oh mate when whenever I um do
00:57:00
do some work with Mia I always feel like
00:57:02
this when I leave it's like she's the
00:57:03
most the happy and grateful person you
00:57:05
could meet but then at the same time you
00:57:07
don't want
00:57:08
to it discre or or discredit or whatever
00:57:11
you say at someone else's issues because
00:57:13
they're St issues yes and everyone's got
00:57:15
their own sort of things but at the same
00:57:18
time I think you shouldn't suck on sh
00:57:20
like least get on with it that's my
00:57:22
attitude with a lot of stuff are you um
00:57:24
are you particularly emotional when was
00:57:25
the last time you do you cry much what
00:57:27
are you cry I am I think I am emotional
00:57:29
actually I am quite
00:57:31
emotional um I do a lot of neilly
00:57:35
CRI I get emotional when I walk out for
00:57:37
big fights do you I don't know why yeah
00:57:40
I don't know why only in that period of
00:57:41
walking out I often do just a sense of
00:57:44
occasion or yeah I think so I don't
00:57:47
really know I don't know not on every
00:57:51
fight or anything but just big ones I do
00:57:53
um
00:57:56
a lot of kids stuff makes me emotional
00:57:58
even rugby games and kids doing stuff I
00:58:01
don't know just Pride yeah but I I would
00:58:05
I am emotional yeah definitely that's
00:58:08
cool so you mentioned David light before
00:58:11
um yeah yeah let's talk about him so he
00:58:14
he's no longer boxing right yeah so he
00:58:16
had um you you went to Manchester
00:58:18
together he had a fight and then um not
00:58:21
long after that um was diagnosed with a
00:58:24
brain clot and a stroke yeah so he yeah
00:58:26
he came home from the world title fight
00:58:30
and 3 weeks later he's having episodes
00:58:32
so what what happened in the fight we
00:58:35
had a fight we had a fight three months
00:58:37
before the world title or three or four
00:58:38
months before and it was really tough
00:58:40
but and we won it and we were meant to
00:58:41
win and Dav was the man and it was a
00:58:44
brutal fight and then we got the world
00:58:47
title fight and we had to take it and we
00:58:49
all thought it was fine and he got
00:58:51
checked up and blah blah blah and then
00:58:53
we we get we go to Manchester we get
00:58:55
massive of scans which we passed all of
00:58:58
them and sorry we got into the ring and
00:59:02
I could see this thing wrong it was
00:59:03
weird cuz training camp was good but
00:59:05
then in the ring I don't know what I was
00:59:08
I [ __ ] is there something not right
00:59:09
today and then as the fight went we he
00:59:12
went the 12 rounds of this big punching
00:59:14
bloody Brit and we lost then we got we
00:59:18
got home and he turned up to training
00:59:20
late wonder what time it was just weird
00:59:23
[ __ ] he was doing weird [ __ ] out of
00:59:25
character out character like David's
00:59:27
weird anyway but I was even
00:59:29
weirder and
00:59:32
um yeah we go and then well he was
00:59:35
getting discharged from hospital we'
00:59:36
send him to hospital and not say now
00:59:37
he's got delayed concussion and stuff
00:59:39
like then he had some sort of episode at
00:59:42
night like 2: in the morning his head
00:59:43
was all throbbing and rushed to hospital
00:59:46
and they put D in his head and found
00:59:48
three bleeds and one of them was old so
00:59:50
he fought for the world title with a
00:59:52
brain wow which is crazy and went 12
00:59:54
rounds um
00:59:56
so these these injuries were were they
00:59:58
boxing related or they say you can't
01:00:01
tell but of course they were of course
01:00:03
they were so um they did an operation on
01:00:06
his head and they took the bleed out
01:00:09
well no no they they don't cut you open
01:00:11
in the head now they stick a tu up up
01:00:14
your up your ass or up your dick one of
01:00:16
the two and it come but they can do it
01:00:17
like that it's amazing so they take the
01:00:20
are you being serious I'm serious yeah
01:00:22
yeah yeah so they don't cut it's got to
01:00:23
be an easier way like through the ear or
01:00:25
the nose
01:00:26
they don't it's it's one of
01:00:28
the and he had a stroke when they took
01:00:31
it out so we came in and he was [ __ ]
01:00:34
like he was I don't know like wheelchair
01:00:37
bound like as bad as it gets yeah real
01:00:40
lucky not to die
01:00:42
um so that was a big one well how is he
01:00:45
now he's good he's in Australia with
01:00:47
Matt Mao as one of my cornermen at the
01:00:49
moment actually because I meant to be
01:00:50
with Andre but our sparing got canceled
01:00:53
this week so Boaz my brother Boaz he's a
01:00:54
big part of um
01:00:56
what we do as well he's my assistant
01:00:58
coach um are in Australia now we' met so
01:01:01
David is doing good like he's a big part
01:01:03
of the gym but he's still not right like
01:01:06
he's yeah like just like 80% 90% sort of
01:01:09
thing yeah yeah yeah he's still he's
01:01:11
still not working he's still not quite
01:01:12
capable but he he's [ __ ] He's luy to
01:01:15
be alive and he's of improvements man
01:01:18
it's been a long year for him but you
01:01:20
know and so he he can never like fight
01:01:23
again or box again no no no um that must
01:01:26
leave a hugee when when that's something
01:01:28
that defines you like it did him um it's
01:01:30
got to leave a huge hole in your life he
01:01:32
when Suddenly It's forcibly taken away
01:01:34
from you yeah I think for him I'd hate
01:01:38
to I'd hate to be like I think that's
01:01:41
what was so upsetting when it happen is
01:01:43
what's he thinking now he can't even
01:01:44
talk you know and it's like wow imagine
01:01:47
being that guy you're on top of the
01:01:48
world you're this athlete fighting for a
01:01:51
world title and then you're sitting in a
01:01:52
whe chair not being able to function
01:01:56
like we had to teach like we would go
01:01:57
into the RS we teach them to walk again
01:01:59
like help them and they you know like
01:02:01
they have those things you hold on to
01:02:02
like it was really bad to learn
01:02:04
everything again what sort of impact did
01:02:07
that have on you yeah it was big I think
01:02:09
it still is yeah um but he's Dave's my
01:02:14
old mate he's David's like he boxed with
01:02:17
me so I knew David I remember taking
01:02:20
David on his first
01:02:22
um what do you call it boxing New
01:02:25
Zealand camp he was 17 and I got ped and
01:02:28
we drove he's a
01:02:30
17-year-old private not private school
01:02:32
what do you call it homeschooled rich
01:02:33
boy and I'm his driver and I'm stopping
01:02:36
every Pub drinking all the way to this
01:02:38
Camp I end up getting kicked out of this
01:02:41
Camp um that was
01:02:43
[Applause]
01:02:45
David's we've been G ever since but
01:02:49
um yeah so he was I don't know we boxed
01:02:52
together for years and then when we
01:02:54
started the new gym he friends with my
01:02:55
wife wife cuz he met her there and I
01:02:58
don't know so he's just like family he's
01:02:59
like me was just and he's still there
01:03:02
he's at my house now four or five days a
01:03:03
week has dinner with us he's part of the
01:03:05
F which is important to me that now
01:03:09
boxing's finished that he's still there
01:03:11
you know does he he still like boxing
01:03:13
like in terms of yeah which is weird um
01:03:17
probably weird because what happened but
01:03:20
he's um he's was he now he came to
01:03:25
drumes for the other week he's I know
01:03:29
he's got he's going to America soon I
01:03:31
think to do something and he's got some
01:03:33
ideas of what he wants to do but he
01:03:35
still loves boxing he's still very much
01:03:37
a part of what we're doing oh speaking
01:03:39
of America you what you so you guys went
01:03:41
to Miami together for some fight with
01:03:42
some big Cuban dude what happened there
01:03:44
would you like run out of town yeah
01:03:46
wasn't there some some Scandal there
01:03:48
yeah we went uh we went to
01:03:52
Miami and it was just it was crazy the
01:03:55
promoter put us there but we had no
01:03:56
promoter with us and we just got ripped
01:03:58
off and treated like [ __ ] all week we're
01:04:00
having punch-ups at the floody weighin
01:04:03
and glove thing it was terrible and I
01:04:05
found my mom's Bing now but she was sick
01:04:07
I just found out so I found out on my
01:04:10
way over there so I wasn't feeling very
01:04:13
good so everything that was kind of bad
01:04:15
was real bad you know like I wasn't in
01:04:18
my behavior wasn't the best but it was
01:04:21
[ __ ] a hell of a week and then we
01:04:22
were in the stadium and it was all
01:04:24
Cubans and he's the Cuban in that chair
01:04:26
and then David knocks him out first
01:04:28
round car just like there's not a sound
01:04:31
in the place and then the father of the
01:04:33
GU like crying jumps in the ring to
01:04:35
attack us and he's getting held and but
01:04:38
we were smart we parked the
01:04:39
[Music]
01:04:40
car like ready to go get up pretty much
01:04:44
it was like yes get the belts get the
01:04:46
gear it was crazy it was like a movie it
01:04:48
was in like this old Casino
01:04:51
outdoor it was all um what do you call
01:04:53
this fing um
01:04:56
what do you call those B Boots my
01:04:57
favorite boots I can't think what they
01:04:59
called the ones that stand on one oh
01:05:00
flamingos flamingos like 100
01:05:04
flamingos oh yeah you got a flamingo T
01:05:06
yeah CU I said if you're knock him out
01:05:09
because there's like hundreds of
01:05:10
flamingos at this um outside sort of
01:05:12
Raceway Hotel then and I said if you
01:05:15
knock him out inside four rounds I'll
01:05:17
get a flamingo T behind my ear just
01:05:19
knock out
01:05:21
fish wow but yeah that was it was pretty
01:05:24
crazy experience that whole week like
01:05:27
it's fun they're looking back at it oh
01:05:28
it's [ __ ] so fun like people just
01:05:31
purely hate you and I don't know I feel
01:05:34
like you quite you to thrive on that a
01:05:36
little bit yeah it is it it was yeah it
01:05:39
was pretty amazing week so that when
01:05:42
when he's in hospital sort of fighting
01:05:44
for his life like do you like how do you
01:05:47
I mean it's a sport that's given you so
01:05:49
much and you've given the sport so much
01:05:51
but like does that sort of impact your
01:05:53
relationship at least at least in the
01:05:54
short term like to get do you start to
01:05:56
question what you're doing and oh you do
01:06:00
but we had we had fight for life on the
01:06:03
Thursday night and this was like the
01:06:04
Saturday or the Sunday that so I only
01:06:06
knew and then Mia got wind of it so I
01:06:09
took her to the hospital CU she ref she
01:06:11
was went for the world title for the
01:06:13
first time and I was like I don't think
01:06:15
you should see him CU you won't fight
01:06:16
he's like no she said no [ __ ] you I'm
01:06:18
not fighting unless I see him it's okay
01:06:20
well you can't tell Jerome and Russian
01:06:22
so everyone knew DAV wasn't well but not
01:06:25
to had to keep it quiet and then they
01:06:28
won and then I took them to see him and
01:06:29
it was just [ __ ]
01:06:31
horrendous and
01:06:34
then the media and that was that was it
01:06:36
was a [ __ ] it was just a real [ __ ] time
01:06:39
and then we had to like media conference
01:06:41
I to front them and I don't know it was
01:06:44
just [ __ ] yeah it doesn't get much worse
01:06:46
for me but I don't think that I had the
01:06:50
choice to quit I I wanted to
01:06:52
quit yeah to be honest when I had um
01:06:56
wonder what the [ __ ] the point is like
01:06:58
it's only a [ __ ] sport you know what
01:07:00
I mean like really you do so much and
01:07:02
it's so much invested in your heart and
01:07:05
your whole life's invested and that
01:07:07
happens what the [ __ ] do we even what's
01:07:10
the point when we just go to
01:07:11
Eng you know why we just be a plumber
01:07:15
and go there go there and not fight and
01:07:16
not fight and just go s I don't
01:07:19
know oh [ __ ] it yeah it's it's crazy
01:07:22
it's like is this even worth it like
01:07:25
what what is this stupid thing we're
01:07:27
doing but did it made you make you so
01:07:29
reassess the importance of what you do
01:07:31
in terms of looking after these people
01:07:33
and making sure they're going in there
01:07:34
like I mean I always did yeah but
01:07:37
there's only so much you can do it just
01:07:39
makes it harder and I had drone fight
01:07:42
the other week and we lost split
01:07:44
decision to go to the world title which
01:07:46
was a huge disappointment for all of us
01:07:49
and um but that was hard that was a real
01:07:51
hard fight he's taking big shots and
01:07:53
it's it's tough man it's tough Sport and
01:07:57
going through the David thing just makes
01:07:58
all that decision Mak it even tougher
01:08:00
and you you got to make the right
01:08:03
decisions how how did you get through
01:08:05
that that David stuff without like
01:08:07
turning to cies or alcohol again it
01:08:09
wasn't an option yeah it's not an
01:08:11
optional for me anymore so if that was
01:08:14
earlier but if I mean if there was ever
01:08:15
going to be a time where where you
01:08:17
relapse like that would be before like
01:08:21
I'm done with that [ __ ] now but if that
01:08:23
was four years ago M I don't think I
01:08:28
think I would have off the wagon
01:08:29
probably but that's not an optional for
01:08:31
me now like nothing's going to make me
01:08:33
drink again I made that that I'm I'm
01:08:36
determined that nothing can make me
01:08:37
drink again and like you say if anything
01:08:40
was going to that was going to yeah yeah
01:08:42
[ __ ] you've come a long way but also in
01:08:44
that situation for me to go drink in
01:08:46
that situation that would be selfish as
01:08:47
[ __ ] like that was a big deal and it
01:08:50
wasn't about me it was about David and
01:08:53
there's a whole lot of other people that
01:08:54
were broken about that you know you got
01:08:55
his family for [ __ ] sake you got to
01:08:58
explain it to them you got to face them
01:08:59
you got to face your own gym all those
01:09:02
Fighters that knew now have to fight
01:09:05
knowing you know it makes everything
01:09:06
pretty real what what do you mean you
01:09:08
have to face face these people it's not
01:09:10
like it was your fault yeah but still
01:09:12
still to face him still the coach you're
01:09:14
still the leader of of what you do it's
01:09:16
like the ship goes down you go down with
01:09:18
it you're still
01:09:19
responsible doesn't PE people will
01:09:21
always give you that it's not your
01:09:23
faults but
01:09:26
if you're a good coach you take
01:09:27
responsibility for [ __ ] man if you're a
01:09:29
[ __ ] coach you blame your fighter you
01:09:31
blame your stuff so it is what it is but
01:09:35
I definitely will always take
01:09:37
responsibility for that [ __ ] and you got
01:09:40
all your other Fighters and I've got to
01:09:41
see it and now they've got to get up and
01:09:43
they've got to figure out if they want
01:09:45
to do it but you got think about all
01:09:47
them that David trains next to them
01:09:48
every day and then suddenly this happens
01:09:51
like do you guys really want to do it
01:09:53
cuz I'm okay if they don't you know what
01:09:54
I mean don't blame you [ __ ] don't
01:09:57
[ __ ] that yeah like right now I'll be
01:09:59
happy for none of you that that's what
01:10:01
you go through a little
01:10:04
bit wellow you've come a long way
01:10:05
haven't you are you proud of
01:10:08
yourself um I feel like yeah no I am I
01:10:14
mean you built something you've built
01:10:16
and you're building something really
01:10:17
cool I think I I yeah I just don't feel
01:10:20
like I'm nearly there at all I just
01:10:22
don't feel satisfied I I feel like I'm
01:10:24
just starting now M I do and
01:10:27
I I don't know where I'm going with it
01:10:29
people always have PL I don't really
01:10:31
much of a plan I'm more of it I just
01:10:34
find myself there but I I do work hard
01:10:37
like that's one thing I do with whatever
01:10:40
I do I work really hard I try and outw
01:10:42
work the other person like I was saying
01:10:44
with school work and [ __ ] like that I've
01:10:45
never been good at any stuff like that
01:10:47
so I lack in a lot of areas so I
01:10:49
probably got to work twice as hard as
01:10:51
everyone else so that's one of my
01:10:53
strengths definitely is to work [ __ ]
01:10:56
hard to get what I want and I'm driven
01:10:58
ass so I feel like things are just
01:11:01
starting for us but I don't know where
01:11:04
it's going yeah I was going to yeah I
01:11:05
was going to say what's next but you
01:11:06
just don't know I want world champions
01:11:09
and
01:11:11
and people can say they want W it's a
01:11:13
[ __ ] hard thing to get and I haven't
01:11:15
got one I've got M but I haven't got a
01:11:17
male World Champ and I've got Andre it
01:11:20
isn't out it's out this week I think but
01:11:21
Andre is fighting for the world title
01:11:24
and to get these guys to win the World
01:11:26
title from my garage is [ __ ] super
01:11:28
hard we're fighting guys that are in
01:11:30
living in altitude camps with chefs and
01:11:34
you know what I mean it's it's it's
01:11:37
laughable that we would it's the most
01:11:40
it's the most wisy thing either you know
01:11:42
it's just crazy but we're knocking at
01:11:44
the door and we're going to do it and I
01:11:46
firmly believe Russian can win a world
01:11:47
title and he's going to win the World
01:11:49
title it's going to be so satisfying
01:11:51
when we when we get that done you know
01:11:53
[ __ ] the money who cares about any of
01:11:55
that [ __ ] [ __ ] like it'll be that will
01:11:57
really make me happy and look Eugene's
01:11:59
done it with Israel look at that that's
01:12:01
[ __ ] unbelievable so it's double yeah
01:12:04
different sport similar sort of [ __ ] and
01:12:06
those guys have done it
01:12:09
and and if you look at their Journey
01:12:11
like that wasn't all plain sailing
01:12:12
everyone sees it now and Israel's the
01:12:14
man he he he got knocked out a few times
01:12:16
that's hard dr's just been just lost you
01:12:19
know we we want those guys to got put on
01:12:22
boxing it's hard
01:12:25
yeah I reck you'll get there I mean
01:12:26
there's a lot of parallels as well uh
01:12:29
yeah when Eugene was on the podcast he
01:12:30
he talked about this he a made of his
01:12:32
like died in his arms in the in the ring
01:12:34
and after that he wanted to give up
01:12:36
coaching um and then a friend of his
01:12:38
came and had a word and basic basically
01:12:42
convince Eugene to see that he he cared
01:12:45
about these guys and would do what he
01:12:46
could to protect them more than anyone
01:12:48
else that's what kept Him in there yeah
01:12:50
for a safety thing I feel like um maybe
01:12:53
it's the same with you I think yeah I
01:12:57
think being a coach is the best job in
01:13:00
the world I think it's the most
01:13:01
satisfying job in the world but it's
01:13:02
tough being a coach is tough because you
01:13:04
got heaps of responsibility you've got
01:13:07
feels like got the world on your
01:13:08
shoulders a lot of the time and people
01:13:10
see the results of fighting and that but
01:13:11
there's a lot more to it than that and
01:13:14
you kind of you got to kind of look
01:13:16
after these guys lives you got to try
01:13:18
and you know you help a young people get
01:13:21
better in life as well as boxing it's
01:13:25
know it's a rewarding thing yeah well
01:13:28
I'm proud of the work you're doing it's
01:13:30
bloody bloody good and I appreciate you
01:13:32
coming on the you don't do many of these
01:13:33
he no I don't know yeah no not really
01:13:38
why why did you say used to this my wife
01:13:41
said I had
01:13:42
to did she oh that's amazing why why did
01:13:46
she say you had to I don't know you can
01:13:48
ask you I oh how good I'm pleased about
01:13:51
that I got your number off M I said oh I
01:13:53
think Isaac would be a great gift just
01:13:55
like yeah get them on get them on so I'm
01:13:57
pleased we made glad I did it man yeah
01:14:00
it's like anything once you do it it's
01:14:01
fine well it's cool I mean you're you're
01:14:04
um like you're incredibly humble and
01:14:05
very straightforward and black and white
01:14:08
but it's um it's a like a hell of a
01:14:09
thing that you're building and um Al
01:14:11
from a personal perspective like
01:14:13
everything you've been through in the
01:14:14
last 10 years it's really cool and I
01:14:15
think a lot of people can get a lot of
01:14:17
good from you know your story I hope so
01:14:20
yeah I think that's what life about is
01:14:23
trying
01:14:24
to trying to help people and have
01:14:26
experience and [ __ ] things up and try
01:14:29
to either get people out of the ditch
01:14:32
that have already got there or prevent
01:14:34
people from going there yeah 100% all
01:14:38
right Isaac paach thanks for coming on
01:14:39
the podcast mate thanks man appreciate
01:14:41

01:14:55
