Why do quizzes improve engagement and memory?

Because retrieving an answer strengthens memory more than re-exposure does. Roediger and Karpicke found that prior testing produced greater long-term retention than restudying, even though restudying made people feel more confident. A listener who answers even one question about an episode remembers more of it and has a reason to come back, which is engagement and retention from the same act.
