00:00:10
well done thanks mate congrats how
00:00:14
Bloody good so we're we're recording
00:00:16
this on um Thursday 3rd of November and
00:00:18
it was last night that the final episode
00:00:19
went to here uh so the cat's out of the
00:00:21
bag when was that done when was finally
00:00:24
I've been sitting on a secret for like
00:00:26
eight months filmed back in back in
00:00:28
March so yeah it was a month month-long
00:00:31
filming
00:00:32
um been been bloody hard but as you
00:00:35
probably saw I was um really keeping a
00:00:37
few secrets on the show so I just kind
00:00:39
of like pulled that extracted that out
00:00:41
out into um into everyday life it comes
00:00:45
way too naturally down lies well I don't
00:00:49
know I feel like um you're not as good a
00:00:51
Secret Keeper as what you think you are
00:00:52
I I missed you earlier in the week and
00:00:54
saying hey um if you win this week I'll
00:00:56
get you on the podcast and you're like
00:00:57
well okay I'll come around on Thursday
00:00:59
yeah yeah I feel like you kind of
00:01:01
alluded to the fact yeah I was like all
00:01:03
right if I win I'll see you at about one
00:01:06
o'clock no guarantees um now you and I
00:01:09
have got history um we should front foot
00:01:11
that I've known you for years I've known
00:01:13
you since you were like a kid yeah I
00:01:15
think I was
00:01:16
six years old right um when when I first
00:01:19
met you yeah because so I I
00:01:23
um I was friends with um Christian
00:01:24
Callan who was um like a big deal all
00:01:27
black at the time so like Bowden bear it
00:01:28
now and myself Christian tanarumaga and
00:01:33
uh his wife Rochelle we we somehow ended
00:01:35
up at your place for like a New Year's
00:01:36
holiday family home yeah as a
00:01:38
six-year-old kid who's just like
00:01:40
fascinated with with the All Blacks um
00:01:44
it was a dream come true like how Bloody
00:01:46
cool is this so the connection there was
00:01:48
um so my parents good good friend Ian
00:01:50
Clinic
00:01:52
um was involved in Rugby Down in
00:01:53
Wellington and uh pretty much just teed
00:01:56
up the guys were looking for for a
00:01:59
holiday right to to go away and um my
00:02:02
mate's got a place up north um you're
00:02:03
gonna head to the far north for a
00:02:04
holiday so yeah we had Tana umanga
00:02:07
Christian Cullen knock on the door
00:02:09
um you were there too yeah I don't know
00:02:12
you were met like that was you know the
00:02:15
edge was um you know the radio
00:02:18
um station of choice for for the troop
00:02:20
family
00:02:21
um in the mornings at that time as well
00:02:22
so it was a big deal that that you were
00:02:24
there not really not with a couple of
00:02:26
like all black Superstars they were yeah
00:02:28
we were playing you've got a massive
00:02:29
lawn at your house in Kerry we were
00:02:31
playing like touch rugby on the lawn
00:02:32
those guys were tackling each other what
00:02:34
is full noise what a dream come true
00:02:35
literally like can't wait to go to
00:02:37
school and
00:02:39
um yeah tell everyone about it I won't
00:02:42
believe they won't believe you but go to
00:02:43
school go but it was always funny
00:02:45
because we had we had single beds at
00:02:47
that point and I remember you and
00:02:48
Christian were up in the single beds so
00:02:51
we'd been booted out to the garage or
00:02:52
something and we were fighting over like
00:02:54
we really wanted Christian Cullen to
00:02:56
sleep in our bed and I think he ended up
00:02:58
like sleeping in my in my bed and Blair
00:03:01
was real Gunner because he was like oh
00:03:02
yeah yeah I do and it was ah it's still
00:03:05
still Dom Harvey yeah yeah I don't think
00:03:07
I don't think I cleaned those sheets for
00:03:09
a good two months after yeah okay that's
00:03:10
disgusting okay so um so you won for
00:03:14
charity live ocean how much was a
00:03:16
hundred thousand dollars Yeah a hundred
00:03:17
thousand okay yeah so the way we'll do
00:03:18
this podcast I'm guessing there's a lot
00:03:20
of people that'll listen to this that
00:03:21
have been following the show and
00:03:22
watching it and a lot of people that
00:03:24
have got no idea what we're talking
00:03:25
about so we'll try and dump it down so
00:03:26
everyone feels included so a hundred
00:03:28
thousand dollars for live ocean which is
00:03:30
um the charity started by your brother
00:03:32
blairchuk and um his sailing buddy Pete
00:03:34
building yep so I mean the whole concept
00:03:37
of the show 21 celebs go on there fight
00:03:40
it out for a month and the winner wins a
00:03:42
hundred thousand for for their charity
00:03:44
and along the way you can win money for
00:03:45
your charity as well through charity
00:03:47
challenges so I won two of those charity
00:03:49
challenges too so 110 Grand just want to
00:03:52
make sure that you know hundred and ten
00:03:54
thousand dollars thank you very much
00:03:56
Blair that's a mess of Summer money yeah
00:03:58
so
00:03:58
um it was a no-brainer for me to to do
00:04:00
it for for live ocean
00:04:02
um one Blair
00:04:04
um started with Pete so got that
00:04:06
personal connection there but I I just
00:04:09
love the ocean you know I've got so many
00:04:10
good memories of of growing up around
00:04:13
the ocean spending time on the water and
00:04:15
now I've you know got a pretty special
00:04:17
connection that I commentate on sailing
00:04:20
and my careers there as well and I think
00:04:22
as kiwis we're pretty uniquely connected
00:04:24
to the ocean like I mean it's bloody all
00:04:27
around us so we don't really have a
00:04:29
choice but I think we love the ocean and
00:04:33
we've got a lot of it here in New
00:04:34
Zealand like we're a small country but
00:04:37
we've got so much but we've got the
00:04:39
fourth biggest ocean in the world so
00:04:42
um we could kind of sit back and be like
00:04:43
all right we'll just enjoy the ocean or
00:04:45
we could get out there and be like let's
00:04:46
let's show you know the world that we're
00:04:50
innovators down here um and we can be
00:04:52
world leaders in Ocean health and that's
00:04:54
what live Ocean's doing there
00:04:56
um you know doing some great stuff
00:04:58
around ocean Health Restoration
00:05:00
innovation of new projects to actually
00:05:02
be like cool let's let's make New
00:05:05
Zealand you know world leaders in Ocean
00:05:07
health and they're doing that and
00:05:08
they're making some really good change
00:05:09
so
00:05:10
um it was a no-brainer for me to do it
00:05:12
for them and and yeah yeah beautiful
00:05:15
thing I mean the ocean's been a huge
00:05:17
part of your brother's life like he's
00:05:18
won two America's Cup almost one around
00:05:20
the world yacht race had won a couple of
00:05:22
Olympic medals for sailing What's um it
00:05:25
must be nice in a way for for you to win
00:05:27
like Treasure Island sort of step out of
00:05:28
a what's it like like being in in the
00:05:30
shadow of
00:05:31
um such a big brother yeah it's funny
00:05:33
because because
00:05:34
um no jealousy no no we're not even I
00:05:38
mean no I think it's because I yeah
00:05:43
there's that proud Factor but also I
00:05:44
just like massive massive fan like of
00:05:47
Blair and pay like just I love I love
00:05:49
saline sailed myself so I follow follow
00:05:53
it you know it's like it's like the All
00:05:55
Blacks are people like that's my that's
00:05:57
my team so when you're fully entrenched
00:05:59
every time that they have a win it's a
00:06:01
win for you and you know it's more proud
00:06:04
than
00:06:04
um than anything else yeah yeah
00:06:06
um but yeah it is nice to get a one on
00:06:08
the board
00:06:09
um there's a massive Shadow he's created
00:06:12
and you're all I mean you're you're one
00:06:15
of uh four boys and you're all wildly
00:06:17
successful yeah you're doing very well
00:06:18
for yourself this Blair you've got a
00:06:20
brother that's a chiropractor a brother
00:06:22
that's a captain on super York yeah
00:06:24
everyone's done really well and until
00:06:26
now it was like and Jesse he does it
00:06:28
yeah he sells cherries at Christmas time
00:06:31
yes uh but it was a booming business it
00:06:35
was a booming business yeah so what are
00:06:37
you doing because I mean um you're a
00:06:39
yachting commentator we see you on uh TV
00:06:41
One news quite a bit Yeah but like
00:06:43
that's not an all year round sort of
00:06:44
thing no so yeah I um back on a on the
00:06:47
south GP circuit from from this month so
00:06:49
heading away to Dubai in a week or so
00:06:52
um and yeah when I'm when I'm not doing
00:06:54
that I'm back here I'm living down in uh
00:06:56
Tauranga Moana so my partner Jules she's
00:06:59
from down that way and um I'm pretty
00:07:01
lucky I think you know as people in the
00:07:04
media industry will know
00:07:06
um especially during covert
00:07:08
work can be few and far between
00:07:10
sometimes so I'm pretty lucky that I can
00:07:13
um you know swoop on in back home to
00:07:16
Tauranga and and Jules and um her
00:07:18
brother Dan have a have a Building
00:07:20
Company down there so check on the tools
00:07:22
now let's always get on the toes
00:07:24
um I'd mainly just drive around and
00:07:26
pretend like I'm doing stuff but yeah so
00:07:28
I do muck in a bit down there and um
00:07:31
yeah been
00:07:33
known to swing a hammer and you've been
00:07:35
together ages right you're in Jaws yeah
00:07:36
11 11 years how old are you 30 30 yeah
00:07:41
so you got together in your late teens
00:07:42
yeah so down in down in Wellington down
00:07:45
down at Uni yeah there was a moment on
00:07:47
um celebrity Treasure Island in the past
00:07:49
couple of weeks where you won a
00:07:50
challenge and uh the prize was like a a
00:07:52
FaceTime call back home yeah
00:07:55
um you you sort of teared up a little
00:07:56
bit that was quite an emotional moment
00:07:58
yeah it was uh and I didn't think I was
00:08:01
going to and it probably wasn't until
00:08:02
after that I was like
00:08:04
quite quite teary there
00:08:07
um but you're in you know we'd been away
00:08:08
for close to four weeks at that point
00:08:10
and I mean Charles and I had spent every
00:08:14
day together for for the last however
00:08:17
long and you know you talk to each other
00:08:19
every day for 11 years and then you
00:08:21
don't talk for four weeks it's very
00:08:23
weird so then to have that moment and
00:08:26
there's a lot of emotion there
00:08:29
um but I kind of thought as well it's
00:08:31
hard being on the show and been away
00:08:33
from people but I think it's harder for
00:08:34
the people on the outside not knowing
00:08:37
what's going on in the show like you
00:08:39
know we're in there playing playing a
00:08:41
game kind of just only concerned about
00:08:44
ourselves and and winning
00:08:46
um but on the outside people you know
00:08:48
still going through their day-to-day
00:08:50
lives being like people like you know
00:08:52
big family and kids
00:08:53
being away from that and not having that
00:08:55
person there it can be hard so yeah it
00:08:58
was just it was it was emotional
00:09:01
um and then just kind of jewels pretty
00:09:04
much like suck it up you're close don't
00:09:06
win
00:09:07
um you know don't screw this up get the
00:09:09
job done you big [ __ ] yeah pretty much
00:09:10
oh that's nice that is um that's so
00:09:13
you you hadn't like no sort of contact
00:09:16
with the outside world no what about so
00:09:18
you the phone's taken off you no devices
00:09:20
no yeah no idea of the news of what's
00:09:23
going on no you get you'd get the odd
00:09:26
bit of news that you'll maybe hear a
00:09:29
production person talking about someone
00:09:31
else but nah like it was they were on
00:09:34
some
00:09:35
um real strict protocol just not not the
00:09:38
crew we're just not giving you anything
00:09:40
yeah um so that was it was in the height
00:09:42
of Omicron as well so when we went into
00:09:45
it we had a lockdown before Hanks
00:09:46
there's a bit of Omicron scare and
00:09:49
um yeah so we knew the numbers when we
00:09:52
get way up there but we were just on a
00:09:54
deserted island in your own bubble but
00:09:56
there was the other weird thing because
00:09:57
all the production all the camera crew
00:10:00
um all the producers all were masked up
00:10:02
fully masked up the whole time so you
00:10:05
had you know the 15 20 people on the
00:10:08
island that you're around with and then
00:10:10
everyone else is just masked up and you
00:10:13
don't see anyone else's face you
00:10:14
literally are just in this very small
00:10:16
crew of people and especially when
00:10:19
they're not smiling at you um you can't
00:10:21
get anyone's reaction anyone's reaction
00:10:23
and and um
00:10:24
um Inger the Winger he was he was
00:10:26
supposed to be on the show yeah I didn't
00:10:27
end up on the show but so so what
00:10:29
happened there yeah it was um it was
00:10:32
pretty
00:10:33
um you know had made the journey North
00:10:35
to film the show with us and and had
00:10:38
um had to leave prior prior to filming
00:10:41
and and unfortunately
00:10:43
um passed away ahead of um
00:10:45
filming was it was he unwell yeah yeah
00:10:48
so he started getting unwell and um and
00:10:51
yeah had had left where we were back
00:10:53
back to back to Auckland and and yeah we
00:10:56
kind of learned a bit
00:10:57
um just before we headed into the show
00:10:59
so that was
00:11:00
um
00:11:01
incredibly incredibly hard to process in
00:11:05
that situation
00:11:08
just such an incredible guy like I I
00:11:11
visit your first time yeah first time
00:11:12
meeting him and I met him for a week and
00:11:15
um had some you know had some awesome
00:11:17
times with him and listened to his
00:11:20
stories and making jokes and he just
00:11:23
it's just a very kind and and
00:11:26
nice nice human do you see him unwell or
00:11:29
anything no no he was happy he was he
00:11:32
was in great spirits he was excited for
00:11:33
the show and
00:11:34
um just one of those you know one of
00:11:36
those things that no one no one knew and
00:11:40
um
00:11:41
yeah it made a massive impact on on the
00:11:43
show and I think how the show played out
00:11:45
as well um having that tragedy before I
00:11:47
think it made us really really close I
00:11:50
reckon it explains probably some of the
00:11:52
the sacrifices that that went on and
00:11:54
just how emotional everyone was
00:11:57
um in the show I think you know you have
00:12:00
a tragedy like that it brings people
00:12:01
together it doesn't matter how long
00:12:02
you've known a person it's a pretty
00:12:04
heavy thing so it really is and not to
00:12:06
mention kind of bizarre that you know
00:12:08
you guys were some of the last people to
00:12:10
see him alive yeah happy and well yeah
00:12:12
yeah and it is
00:12:14
um it is a hard winter process you know
00:12:16
we did the did a fundraising event for
00:12:18
putting his family uh uh um a couple of
00:12:22
weeks ago
00:12:23
and
00:12:24
um
00:12:26
sorry
00:12:28
um
00:12:30
and his wife said that where we did the
00:12:32
bowling was uh was the last place that
00:12:35
his family had gone
00:12:37
um together before they before he went
00:12:39
north
00:12:40
um
00:12:41
and we didn't know that
00:12:43
um
00:12:43
and yeah it was really hard that that at
00:12:46
that moment kind of dawned on me that
00:12:48
that we were that you know the last
00:12:50
people yeah um to see him but to have
00:12:53
that to have that moment with withing
00:12:55
his family to
00:12:57
um to celebrate his life and it was a
00:12:59
mess of Celebration
00:13:00
um you know it's sharing stories and and
00:13:03
bowling thing
00:13:04
um was was really special yeah that was
00:13:06
a really cool thing to do that was um an
00:13:07
initiative done by Ron cripp uh former
00:13:09
black who was on the show with you and
00:13:10
yourself and your bold uh for 12 hours
00:13:12
uh for two consecutive days yeah my
00:13:15
fingers are actually still sore from
00:13:17
doing it it's uh they're like some
00:13:19
serious bone bruising but no like it was
00:13:21
a nice thing whose idea was it was that
00:13:23
Ron's idea yeah like Ronald and I are
00:13:26
super close
00:13:27
um now since the show and um yeah we
00:13:30
kind of just
00:13:31
um
00:13:32
thought would like to do something we'd
00:13:34
always plan to do something we're like
00:13:36
Let's do let's do some bowling it's nice
00:13:38
intimate we can get as you know rain or
00:13:40
shine we can we can do it and
00:13:42
um
00:13:43
you know since the show and talking
00:13:44
about angling with Ron the one thing I
00:13:46
started to learn was just that you know
00:13:48
he was a very kind person his whole life
00:13:51
he put others first his whole life and
00:13:53
and did everything for our and anyone
00:13:56
you talk to anger the Winger had this
00:13:58
Mass smile just always so lovely and as
00:14:02
devastating as he was on the field as as
00:14:04
a Winger he was just the most gentle
00:14:06
giant offer yeah
00:14:08
um so it was a no-brainer Ron just said
00:14:10
if
00:14:11
if the situation was any different this
00:14:14
is what anger would be doing for someone
00:14:15
else so yeah it really just made sense
00:14:19
for us to do that yeah that was a really
00:14:20
nice thing to do and it was really cool
00:14:21
I came down to see you on the first day
00:14:23
yeah there was um you were really good
00:14:24
okay at least I'll get into that
00:14:28
um it's obviously you mentioned you and
00:14:29
Ron kripper real close who who else from
00:14:31
the cast do you think you'll be friends
00:14:32
with for life um oh to be to be honest
00:14:34
like I'm very lucky that
00:14:37
um I've met some really great friends on
00:14:39
there
00:14:40
um and yeah Ron Ron's one of them uh
00:14:43
Dylan and I um yeah
00:14:47
um guy Montgomery we've kind of got a uh
00:14:49
the four of us got a golf golf chat
00:14:51
that's right you forget about the people
00:14:52
that um get eliminated
00:14:54
that feels like a lifetime ago yeah it
00:14:56
does it would have been would have been
00:14:58
great to have him um on there a bit
00:15:00
longer but you know Courtney and Alves
00:15:02
the the two are in the final with me
00:15:04
um what a special thing yeah yeah and
00:15:08
they they came along last night to to
00:15:10
celebrate with me which was which was
00:15:11
really special and
00:15:13
um yeah got the got the curse words out
00:15:15
of the way earlier and then we um had a
00:15:18
fun night so yeah it was um
00:15:21
the whole show was great and and there's
00:15:24
no there's genuinely no one on there
00:15:25
that are damn not
00:15:28
catch up with
00:15:29
um what about people on the show that
00:15:30
wouldn't want to catch up with you
00:15:31
different story yeah oh really different
00:15:34
story because you I don't know if you
00:15:36
want to get into this but um when I came
00:15:37
to see at the bowl-a-thon you uh
00:15:39
mentioned a couple of people who it's
00:15:41
still Frosty with now yeah yeah I think
00:15:43
like it's um it's a funny one like there
00:15:46
was a cut you know
00:15:48
I made a couple of phone calls after and
00:15:50
said like look sorry and I know I you
00:15:52
know threw you under the bus there and
00:15:55
um I hope you understand I hope you
00:15:57
understand why but yeah it is a tricky
00:15:59
one because it is a game and you talk
00:16:01
about it being a game a lot when you're
00:16:02
in there but it's also
00:16:05
pretty real life you know you are and
00:16:07
you are making connections and you do
00:16:09
have friends yeah on there and
00:16:11
um and especially when you know people
00:16:13
from the outside world as well it kind
00:16:14
of brings a whole nother element to it
00:16:16
how do you mean um like if you you know
00:16:18
if you've got a pre-existing
00:16:19
relationships in relationships and then
00:16:21
you go into it and
00:16:23
um oh because they think they can trust
00:16:24
you and yeah yeah so it's a very weird
00:16:27
it's a very weird thing and to be honest
00:16:30
I would have been Frosty at me as well
00:16:32
just you know go coming out of the show
00:16:36
I think all right I mean my whole game
00:16:38
was pretty much I I told the biggest lie
00:16:41
in Celebrity Treasure Island history
00:16:44
like I I want an advantage to bury the
00:16:47
bloody treasure and and lied about that
00:16:50
for three weeks so so all yeah for the
00:16:53
benefit of anyone that's not watching
00:16:54
this so all you really had to do is make
00:16:57
it to the end and then you were almost
00:16:58
guaranteed to win well I can't take a
00:17:00
free pass that's kind of what I thought
00:17:02
but
00:17:03
um as time went on they really were like
00:17:06
these clothes are important so I knew I
00:17:07
still had to get the clothes and there
00:17:09
were still three pretty gnarly
00:17:10
challenges to to get to that final part
00:17:13
and I knew at that point Courtney was
00:17:15
going to be right on me Elvis wasn't far
00:17:17
behind as well so I needed a good enough
00:17:19
Gap to still be able to get there find
00:17:22
it work it out so it probably wasn't as
00:17:24
much of an advantages
00:17:26
um I would have liked liked it was a
00:17:28
massive Advantage obviously burying the
00:17:30
bloody treasure but also like I still
00:17:32
had to get there and Stewart did all the
00:17:35
stuff on the day still had to have all
00:17:36
the clothes
00:17:38
um or I would have been you know I would
00:17:40
have been the last serum when I turned
00:17:42
up they would have just followed me to
00:17:43
wherever I I was going and it would have
00:17:45
been an absolute lottery so yeah I don't
00:17:48
think it was a and I was I said to them
00:17:50
before I was like this isn't a dead hate
00:17:52
like it's
00:17:54
it's still to play for and I genuinely
00:17:56
thought that was the case how much of
00:17:58
winning it is luck and how much is skill
00:18:00
I reckon the main part of luck is just
00:18:02
where the narrative goes with
00:18:06
who people Target you know if you can
00:18:08
keep your head down and if the story
00:18:10
starts getting talked about about
00:18:12
another person that's where you can get
00:18:13
lucky or if the you know the wind change
00:18:15
and it's like on the heat might be on
00:18:17
you but then you get lucky because
00:18:18
something happens and then Spotlight
00:18:20
gets put on someone else because I feel
00:18:22
like you say you get put up for
00:18:23
elimination there's an elimination
00:18:25
challenge it seems like a certain amount
00:18:27
of luck goes into those some of them
00:18:28
yeah yeah but at the end of the day
00:18:30
still though you unlike say the show
00:18:34
Survivor where you're you're voted out
00:18:36
you always have the opportunity to
00:18:39
seal your own you know Destiny and and
00:18:43
compete for that final it might be
00:18:45
slightly lucky but
00:18:47
um I'd say like 80 of them are more
00:18:49
skill based than than like and if you're
00:18:54
if you're going through on your winning
00:18:55
challenges and you're getting immunity
00:18:57
as well throughout I think that I got
00:18:59
quite
00:19:00
um
00:19:01
a good you know two good opportunities
00:19:03
in that final wear
00:19:05
um and the final 10 so where I was
00:19:08
winning challenges that gave me immunity
00:19:10
otherwise my head would have been on the
00:19:11
chopping block if I hadn't won those
00:19:13
those challenges so yeah I think I don't
00:19:17
know I reckon
00:19:18
um there is an element of luck for sure
00:19:21
um
00:19:22
like diamond Montgomery was very unlucky
00:19:25
that just instantly heads were turned on
00:19:27
him and he was almost too funny from the
00:19:30
outset because everyone was like oh guy
00:19:32
guy he's hilarious and then as soon as
00:19:34
people were talking about that it's like
00:19:35
who we pulled it up well we've talked
00:19:37
about guy a lot today why don't we just
00:19:39
put him up so
00:19:40
um so he was what what do you mean he
00:19:42
was put up like he's funny well just say
00:19:45
standing out too much stood out you know
00:19:47
and then so when you know when that's
00:19:49
happening as well from like you know
00:19:51
when the hosts are talking and asking
00:19:53
questions they're like guy you did
00:19:54
really well on that challenge today
00:19:57
um so as soon as the host said as well
00:19:58
people start looking so it would make
00:20:00
more sense to put up with someone that
00:20:01
you don't know much about you think oh
00:20:03
I've had some good chats with a guy he
00:20:04
made me laugh let's not put him yeah but
00:20:06
it's the other teams that are putting
00:20:08
people up so yeah it's kind of like who
00:20:10
are you putting up you want to put up
00:20:11
strong people to try to get them get
00:20:13
them going and that was I think what
00:20:14
that was you know another team's
00:20:16
decision yeah would you if you um were
00:20:19
to do it again would you do anything
00:20:20
different uh yeah I
00:20:22
I would do it again
00:20:24
um and I would do it I would do it no so
00:20:28
I would
00:20:29
um which yeah and I'd hopefully do that
00:20:31
again
00:20:32
um but like my game plan and how I ended
00:20:35
up playing the game was very much like
00:20:36
low profile trying to keep secrets and
00:20:39
kind of be pretty Coy and not stick your
00:20:42
head out I'd love to go into it next
00:20:44
time be like
00:20:45
you know I won I'm I'm a champ coming
00:20:48
into this thing and just be like
00:20:50
carefree and be put me up in elimination
00:20:52
challenges you know I'm happy to be that
00:20:54
person and just kind of go into it a
00:20:57
little bit more carefree and not care so
00:20:59
much about
00:21:00
um
00:21:01
about winning because yeah I've done it
00:21:03
been there done it
00:21:06
um and how's your conscience with it now
00:21:08
in the way you the way you behaved and
00:21:10
the way you acted yeah are you
00:21:12
comfortable with it yeah I am
00:21:13
comfortable with that I
00:21:15
um but it's a reality show you have
00:21:16
those worrying times like watching it
00:21:19
back it's definitely harder than than
00:21:20
doing it and you kind of just have to
00:21:23
remove yourself and take yourself back
00:21:25
to back to the moment and be be happy
00:21:28
with how you were in the moment and
00:21:30
during the show there were times that
00:21:31
were super hard where
00:21:33
you're lying to people or or you've got
00:21:36
an alliance that you've kind of you've
00:21:38
got a fractured relationship there
00:21:40
um and at the time you're like this is
00:21:43
[ __ ] but I'm happy to be a bit of a dick
00:21:46
to win a hundred thousand dollars for my
00:21:49
charity yeah that's kind of where my it
00:21:52
took a while for my head to get into
00:21:53
that space of like okay there's no way
00:21:55
you can keep everyone happy and the more
00:21:57
you keep trying to make everyone happy
00:21:59
it's actually just making people more
00:22:02
pissed off
00:22:03
um so it comes a time where you just
00:22:05
kind of got to put yourself in your
00:22:06
charity first and go okay well
00:22:08
I'm here for May I'm here for my charity
00:22:11
and
00:22:12
I'm gonna do whatever it takes to to win
00:22:14
oh if anyone holds along to him Grudge
00:22:16
about anything it's on them right yeah
00:22:18
and and that's that you know what
00:22:20
especially people that
00:22:21
um
00:22:22
you know you consider um you know good
00:22:25
friends or that you're close to
00:22:28
um but also watching it back the hardest
00:22:30
part is when you do see people trusting
00:22:32
you like when you're lying through your
00:22:34
teeth and then it cuts to them and
00:22:35
they're like I don't you know I don't
00:22:38
think you'd be lying to me like I trust
00:22:39
him and you're like ah don't trust me
00:22:42
yelling at the TV are you watching it
00:22:45
thinking I'm a piece of [ __ ] I'm a bad
00:22:47
person yeah oh [ __ ] but I I think I you
00:22:50
know I feel like I played the game in a
00:22:53
way where I wasn't you know I'd I
00:22:55
probably had a couple of slimeball moves
00:22:57
and and did things but I like to think
00:22:59
that I played the game in a way that
00:23:01
was raised you know was kind and I think
00:23:03
most people did as well yeah
00:23:05
um just trying not to be
00:23:08
not to be a massive at all pretty much
00:23:11
that's that's the goal so you end up
00:23:13
with the nickname The Traitor is that
00:23:14
gonna stick yeah oh gosh I hope so such
00:23:18
a goodie
00:23:19
yeah
00:23:21
um traitor what was um so what was the
00:23:24
anxiety levels like during the series so
00:23:26
it was on Monday Tuesday Wednesday
00:23:27
nights
00:23:29
um hi yeah anxious every evening yeah
00:23:31
and I I
00:23:33
I don't think I was a massively anxious
00:23:35
person but you start like it starts
00:23:37
eating you up and
00:23:39
um I'm like okay I'm not gonna read any
00:23:40
comments not going to listen to anything
00:23:41
and then you end up reading bloody every
00:23:43
article and every comment on Facebook
00:23:45
that people have been writing I'm like
00:23:47
what am I doing I need a little bit
00:23:49
myself away Mary from Fielding is
00:23:52
unhappy with what I did in there you
00:23:54
don't even know
00:23:55
and you feel like send her a message be
00:23:58
like excuse me I do
00:24:00
um so yeah it's hard to remove yourself
00:24:03
from that isn't it yeah and I didn't and
00:24:05
I did have to take a step back and I
00:24:07
think collectively there are a few of us
00:24:08
that were kind of all in the same boat
00:24:10
and I had a few chats to Courtney we
00:24:12
were both like reeling with stuff that
00:24:14
was going on and kind of were like okay
00:24:16
we need to just you know take a step
00:24:17
back and
00:24:19
um stop caring so much about what other
00:24:21
people what other people think yeah it
00:24:23
can be all consuming yeah but yeah it is
00:24:26
it is because you don't see any of the
00:24:27
edit until it goes to air like same time
00:24:30
we're watching the same time as everyone
00:24:31
else so um you know moments that were
00:24:35
maybe kind of like borderline on the
00:24:38
show and then you're are they gonna is
00:24:40
it gonna be him is it going to make the
00:24:41
cat it's gonna make the cat and then it
00:24:43
doesn't you're just like mess I'm sorry
00:24:44
relief or it does and you're like okay I
00:24:46
should probably text that person
00:24:48
um oh my God was it like that no I don't
00:24:51
I mean more in a more in a fun way yeah
00:24:53
yeah right like Ron misses me like every
00:24:56
every night oh you're being a weasel
00:24:58
again yeah
00:25:03
yeah what was your biggest surprise
00:25:06
about watching it back uh
00:25:09
probably biggest surprise probably was
00:25:12
um how how upset a couple of people got
00:25:16
or like how
00:25:18
um
00:25:18
Keen a couple of people were to get get
00:25:21
me gone or you know were pissed off at
00:25:23
there
00:25:24
um at the time I knew people you know
00:25:25
kind of were in that camp but not so die
00:25:29
hard like
00:25:30
he has to go and just how collectively
00:25:32
the whole group had decided and
00:25:35
conspired that it was it was towards the
00:25:37
year day like the last couple yeah there
00:25:39
was about even when there was about
00:25:40
eight people I could kind of really
00:25:42
start feeling that that he'd start
00:25:44
turning to me in there and I just didn't
00:25:46
realize
00:25:48
you know I was pretty all consumed in
00:25:50
the game at that point and had tunnel
00:25:52
vision for the for the final and was
00:25:54
just
00:25:55
um I guess blocking it out because it's
00:25:57
not not nice when you kind of feel you
00:26:00
know like we're almost bullied no I'd
00:26:02
like definitely I don't know like a
00:26:04
massive Target on your back yeah yeah
00:26:06
just spectated on your back so
00:26:08
um
00:26:09
but also like I said like gosh do not
00:26:13
feel sorry for me like I put myself in
00:26:15
that position and deserved every little
00:26:17
bit of
00:26:18
um that I got like I deserved a tagging
00:26:20
on my back and I deserve to have the
00:26:21
daggers out
00:26:23
um well it seems like they had a right
00:26:24
to be fearful of you because you were
00:26:26
bloody good yeah and but I just it's
00:26:28
funny I just that was the most um
00:26:30
interesting thing for me was just how
00:26:32
intense that um
00:26:35
that gang was that were
00:26:37
um trying to take me down and how intent
00:26:39
and how how bent they were on doing it
00:26:41
yeah so this is like um a a girl group
00:26:44
towards the end like they were just um
00:26:46
adamant that they wanted a female to win
00:26:49
um
00:26:51
reverse reverse sexism in a way yeah
00:26:54
it's a it's a hard one because I I was
00:26:57
very honest with a couple of um the
00:26:59
woman on the show that I was Keen to
00:27:00
kind of understand you know the woman's
00:27:03
lights and what it meant and like I had
00:27:05
some really great chats with Cassie
00:27:07
um about it before she left and then
00:27:09
Karen late on and and
00:27:12
yeah it I can see people looking from
00:27:15
the outside and I've had a few comments
00:27:17
saying you know they didn't think it was
00:27:18
very fair that you know that it was
00:27:20
happening but when you're on there and
00:27:22
you're seeing and hearing about why it's
00:27:25
so important to them
00:27:27
um I kind of had a you know greater
00:27:31
understanding for it and
00:27:33
if someone like Karen o'lear is who's so
00:27:35
connected to her charity is happy to
00:27:38
step away from the game you know to help
00:27:40
promote another woman going into the
00:27:42
final
00:27:43
um you don't have to agree with it but I
00:27:45
think
00:27:46
we could all take a step back and go
00:27:48
well why is why is she doing that this
00:27:50
is obviously pretty powerful move maybe
00:27:53
we should start taking notice naturally
00:27:55
listening and that was probably the
00:27:56
biggest thing that I learned on it it
00:27:58
was like people don't have to agree with
00:28:00
it but at least just listen and be
00:28:03
willing to kind of hear the other side
00:28:05
and understand why
00:28:07
um yeah
00:28:08
so it's a I didn't I
00:28:11
obviously wasn't part of the woman's
00:28:14
Alliance but obviously yeah but I
00:28:17
I was you know I was all for it and I
00:28:20
understood that you know what what they
00:28:22
were doing was was very powerful and I
00:28:25
think watching the show back I'm sure
00:28:27
there are thousands of of young females
00:28:30
that were watching the show and inspired
00:28:33
by Courtney Siobhan Mao you know Karen
00:28:36
Cassie all these really all these really
00:28:39
strong wahine that
00:28:42
that were great in the game and they
00:28:44
were very powerful and you know they
00:28:45
pushed they pushed me right to the end
00:28:50
yeah
00:28:51
um a few people have said to me they
00:28:53
thought Courtney likes
00:28:55
a lot of the stuff she said on camera
00:28:57
like she really had it in for you it's
00:28:58
like she she she she didn't she seemed
00:29:01
to loathe you but then a few people said
00:29:04
to me I think she kind of liked them
00:29:05
like a primary school sort of thing you
00:29:07
know you're mean to the people that you
00:29:09
crash on yeah no we we just said I think
00:29:11
because it was probably just Amplified
00:29:14
because she loved me so much anytime she
00:29:16
was slightly nice to me it was probably
00:29:17
just Amplified
00:29:19
um but no we we had a really
00:29:21
um really nice relationship it did feel
00:29:22
like that kind of
00:29:24
um you know you're at school again and
00:29:26
and just joking around like the more
00:29:28
like she'll call me the trader and the
00:29:30
more I deny it like I had no reason to
00:29:32
keep denying it apart from the fact that
00:29:34
it was that it was just fun to fun to
00:29:36
wind her up
00:29:37
um but yeah she she was an absolute
00:29:40
weapon on that show like she played the
00:29:43
game harder and more Fierce than than
00:29:45
anyone out there and she was so driven
00:29:47
to win
00:29:49
um it was it was pretty cool to say and
00:29:51
yeah I'm lucky I came out of there alive
00:29:54
yeah
00:29:55
here being called a boring winner no I
00:29:58
mean yeah I don't care a Winner's a
00:30:00
Winner's a winner yeah yeah and from
00:30:03
that final three hundred percent I'm way
00:30:05
way more boring what do you mean then
00:30:07
then Courtney and
00:30:09
um and Elvis but I think I'm just more
00:30:12
flamboyant
00:30:15
as well like at the end they'll like I
00:30:17
remember they're like this sounds like a
00:30:19
funeral you know like you can be be
00:30:21
happy but I didn't want to you know
00:30:23
we're just toiled for four weeks on that
00:30:25
Bloody Island like it didn't feel right
00:30:27
that I was going to be completely like
00:30:29
jumping for joy when
00:30:31
um Courtney and Elvis were sitting you
00:30:33
know sitting there because I I knew they
00:30:35
would be gutted um and it didn't feel
00:30:38
right to
00:30:39
to do that rub it on their faces so yeah
00:30:41
oh that's last night was the first time
00:30:43
that I really kind of had the chance to
00:30:45
celebrate um properly and kind of relive
00:30:47
that one again yeah oh amazing
00:30:51
so good
00:30:52
um oh one thing we haven't even
00:30:53
discussed yet you're quite a handy
00:30:55
Runner like we saw you running a bit on
00:30:56
the final episode you're running from
00:30:58
challenge to challenge to the chest but
00:31:00
you um you you can run 800 meters in
00:31:03
under two minutes which is uh it's
00:31:05
[ __ ] fast yeah
00:31:07
um yeah I love it absolutely love
00:31:09
running like and it's I I was so late to
00:31:12
the party with it as well like growing
00:31:13
up I
00:31:14
I played rugby played Cricket never
00:31:16
never
00:31:18
got into the running so I've never did
00:31:20
Athletics and then
00:31:21
um I worked for a hydration company SOS
00:31:24
hydration
00:31:25
um for I worked for them for like five
00:31:27
years after I left uni and
00:31:30
um kind of threw that met some met some
00:31:32
Runners down in in Wellington to you
00:31:34
know did some stuff with
00:31:36
um Nick Willis who was one of our
00:31:38
ambassadors
00:31:39
um people like Julian Matthews Hamish
00:31:42
Carson so we did a lot of work with
00:31:44
those guys and every now and then
00:31:45
they'll come for a run Simon Rogers
00:31:47
another one and
00:31:49
um yeah they they'll like come for a run
00:31:52
have a job as well this is quite fun and
00:31:54
then it kind of started doing it more
00:31:56
and more to the point where I was
00:31:57
running every day down there and then
00:31:59
um yeah Simon Rogers
00:32:01
um was like why don't you why don't you
00:32:03
actually tried do you want to do it 800
00:32:05
so started training didn't 800 and
00:32:09
on my first time got bloody close to
00:32:10
Breaking two minutes and then yeah later
00:32:13
that season
00:32:14
um I did so yeah and I just fell in love
00:32:17
with it I thought it was and I was
00:32:18
kicking myself as well that I didn't get
00:32:20
into it earlier so why was I wasting my
00:32:22
time bloody playing rugby look at me
00:32:24
like what a stupid idea like what like I
00:32:27
have a you know oh so all the people
00:32:30
that have been telling me that I've had
00:32:31
a runner's frame for the last 25 years
00:32:33
were saying it for for a reason no
00:32:35
reason yeah and you still run a bit
00:32:36
these days um you were telling me before
00:32:38
you ran a bit during the Treasure Island
00:32:39
Series yeah yeah so yeah get in get him
00:32:42
back into it kind of feel like I'm
00:32:44
getting older and and
00:32:46
injured um every time I try and pick up
00:32:48
the mileage
00:32:50
um something starts hurting or you're
00:32:52
getting tweaked so no want to get into
00:32:54
it um into it some more because yeah
00:32:57
like I said I do think it I do think it
00:32:58
is greater I don't think I'll get back
00:33:00
on the track necessarily and do anything
00:33:03
um super super fast probably can't
00:33:06
anymore we'll just go a bit longer you
00:33:07
think yeah just do stuff that you know
00:33:09
do some halves to to make I'd like to
00:33:12
store Marathon at some point yeah
00:33:14
um
00:33:15
yeah although there is one
00:33:18
um there is one title that I would like
00:33:20
to get and that's the Beer Mile
00:33:22
um
00:33:23
yeah you have it have a beer do a lap
00:33:26
yeah so four labs and you do a beer each
00:33:29
lamp yeah yeah and if you vomit extra
00:33:32
lap yeah so we did it that was like one
00:33:36
of the first times I ever ran was we're
00:33:38
over in Kona um I was working for SOS
00:33:41
and we had activations over there and
00:33:43
they do it every night before the Big
00:33:46
Race athletes and like that aren't
00:33:48
racing
00:33:49
um and sponsors and stuff all all made
00:33:51
out of the bloody abandons
00:33:54
um airport and do a BMI race and I was
00:33:57
like okay I'll go to this be a good
00:33:58
promo checked on the the T-shirt the SOS
00:34:01
top and then did it and I got third in
00:34:03
this bloody BMR race I was like okay
00:34:05
probably put it down to maybe be better
00:34:07
at these guys and uh at knocking a pint
00:34:10
back but
00:34:11
um I was like oh this is this is really
00:34:13
good and then a couple of years ago they
00:34:14
did one down in total and I got bloody
00:34:16
popped I got second but that was so
00:34:18
deader than like under six minutes five
00:34:20
minutes
00:34:22
so I'm out for I'm out for Revenge
00:34:26
um I want to put that I want to put the
00:34:27
BMR trophy next to the Treasure Island
00:34:29
one yeah do you find the running quite
00:34:32
um quite cathartic like good to clear
00:34:33
your mind and yeah yeah massively
00:34:36
um and that's been like the last couple
00:34:37
of weeks I've got back into it for for
00:34:40
that purpose just take a jog around the
00:34:42
block just to process your thoughts yeah
00:34:44
just to literally remind yourself that
00:34:47
you are a good person blow the steam off
00:34:49
a little bit yeah yeah yeah how's your
00:34:52
um how's your mental health been over
00:34:53
the years have you been good yeah pretty
00:34:54
good um you're pretty chill doing that
00:34:57
and I feel feel very lucky
00:35:00
um that I have been good you know and
00:35:02
there's there's been times like everyone
00:35:04
goes through where you kind of
00:35:06
um know you're maybe not in the best
00:35:07
spot and need to make some make some
00:35:09
change for the positive and
00:35:11
um I've been very lucky that I've been
00:35:13
able to identify that and um and myself
00:35:16
and and and do that before you know
00:35:19
before you get yourself into a hole but
00:35:22
um yeah I think running plays a big a
00:35:24
big part in that like for me there's a
00:35:26
direct correlation between
00:35:28
um
00:35:29
just not being pent up or frustrated or
00:35:32
anxious or angry
00:35:35
um
00:35:36
and and run you know running and yeah I
00:35:39
find if I haven't been doing it for a
00:35:41
while I need to I need to get out there
00:35:43
and blow some steam off um because when
00:35:45
you're running you're generally healthy
00:35:47
when you're healthy you know it's a lot
00:35:49
easier to be happy
00:35:50
oh they go hand in hand hey it's it's
00:35:52
quite funny how just sort of in recent
00:35:54
years like the last 10 or 20 years it's
00:35:56
became apparent just what um just how
00:35:58
closely your mental health and your
00:35:59
physical health are related yeah
00:36:01
and I I mean I think like it's a
00:36:05
even when
00:36:07
even when you are good it's still
00:36:09
important to to talk about it and and
00:36:12
acknowledge the fact that
00:36:14
um
00:36:15
yeah acknowledge the fact that that
00:36:17
you're doing well and I think that that
00:36:19
helps the whole scenario as well to you
00:36:22
know give people hope that you can turn
00:36:24
a corner and
00:36:25
um and not be afraid to to be okay as
00:36:29
well you know it's
00:36:31
um it's absolutely okay to not be okay
00:36:33
but it's also okay to be okay as well um
00:36:36
and I think the more we just talk about
00:36:38
it in general whether you're good bad or
00:36:40
otherwise it's just talk about it like
00:36:42
put make it part of everyday life
00:36:44
absolutely and be honest about it so if
00:36:46
you're not a yeah you're right if you're
00:36:48
not if you're not okay don't say you are
00:36:49
okay yeah none of us yeah yeah exactly I
00:36:53
like it and I think the more we
00:36:55
normalize it and for everyone it's you
00:36:58
know it's going to help the people that
00:36:59
that aren't okay be confident to to ask
00:37:02
for that help
00:37:03
um because yeah it's an easy
00:37:05
conversation to have if we're having it
00:37:07
regular it was a very hard conversation
00:37:11
to just have off the bat because
00:37:14
it feels hard to start it's a hard
00:37:17
conversation to start yeah are you are
00:37:18
you and your um Three Brothers quite
00:37:20
quite close and quite good at talking
00:37:22
about that stuff no I think I think we
00:37:24
we could be better I think in general
00:37:27
like we could we could be better
00:37:29
um
00:37:30
yeah right we my school friends
00:37:34
um we've remained really close
00:37:36
um throughout the years and we've got a
00:37:37
really really great group of friends
00:37:40
um like 20 odd of us that that all still
00:37:42
keep in touch and we do a really cool
00:37:44
thing every year where we catch up at
00:37:46
Christmas time
00:37:48
um do Secret Santa
00:37:49
um and and chat and we it's a really
00:37:53
special time people you know take a seat
00:37:55
on it on a stool
00:37:57
um
00:37:58
talk about the good things from the Year
00:38:00
talk about the bad things and it is
00:38:02
literally a you know a moment just as a
00:38:06
group of friends to sit down and have a
00:38:08
Roundtable chat about how how we are and
00:38:10
I think oh that's cool um how many of
00:38:12
you yes you've got 20 right you know so
00:38:15
yeah and we that's that's borderline
00:38:17
public speaking Yeah it's like wow yeah
00:38:19
yeah and how to say how long do you talk
00:38:21
for
00:38:22
some people are like sweet I'm I'm fine
00:38:25
that's it and then others will go and
00:38:27
you know talk for a bit longer but so
00:38:29
there's some there that aren't obviously
00:38:31
aren't as comfortable as others but I
00:38:32
suppose if um if if a few people start
00:38:35
to show that sort of vulnerability and
00:38:36
be honest it lets everyone know that
00:38:38
it's a real safe space yeah that's a
00:38:39
cool thing to do yeah and
00:38:42
um but yeah like going back to
00:38:44
um I think like
00:38:46
kiwis in here like
00:38:48
we keep things bottled up and we could
00:38:51
all talk a bit more and
00:38:53
um yeah you kind of
00:38:55
you can always do better doesn't matter
00:38:57
what you're doing you can always you can
00:38:58
always do better but we're a super close
00:39:00
family
00:39:01
um and uh yeah we we all get on with you
00:39:06
know very fortunate that we've got a
00:39:08
real you know I've got a relationship
00:39:09
with all of them where
00:39:11
um we're we're mates and and that's
00:39:13
that's really special
00:39:15
um and I know it's something to be you
00:39:17
know it's a privilege as well because I
00:39:19
know a lot of people don't have that
00:39:20
yeah how um
00:39:23
your mum and dad are they're both
00:39:25
amazing people as individuals and they
00:39:27
were great as a couple as well how old
00:39:28
were you when they when they split up uh
00:39:30
I think it was
00:39:31
um early early 20s right yeah early 20s
00:39:34
how was that they're a bit rough for a
00:39:35
while yeah I mean I remember when I when
00:39:38
I when I came to stay at your house when
00:39:39
you were a kid
00:39:40
um your mum put me onto a book called
00:39:42
The Road Less Traveled which is like a
00:39:43
self-help box I think they were going
00:39:45
through yeah way back yeah I think um
00:39:47
like it's a I mean relationships are
00:39:50
hard and
00:39:53
um
00:39:54
yeah at that age as well I don't know I
00:39:57
don't know if there's ever a good time
00:39:58
to to have that happen to you um but
00:40:01
it's a weird one
00:40:02
um when you're away as well and that's
00:40:04
probably the hard thing you know you
00:40:05
want to be around your family and
00:40:06
support them through whatever they're
00:40:07
going through and I was in Wellington at
00:40:09
the time and um yeah I did find that
00:40:11
quite hard just not being able to
00:40:13
um to be around and have that time but
00:40:15
you know we're
00:40:17
we're a close family that
00:40:20
you know
00:40:21
support each other and and we're you
00:40:24
know we're still super close and
00:40:26
um yeah like my mum and dad have been
00:40:29
super awesome during the show they've
00:40:30
absolutely
00:40:32
um loved it and you know get messages
00:40:34
every every night for full down you know
00:40:37
full debrief and
00:40:38
um talk about the next episode and they
00:40:40
had no idea so they were both nervous
00:40:42
wrecks
00:40:43
um yeah watching watching the show they
00:40:45
didn't have an inkling no I didn't so
00:40:47
because you sign a contract that's got
00:40:48
like an NDA on a non-disclosure
00:40:50
agreement and they've I remember seeing
00:40:52
one a few years ago for Next Top Model
00:40:53
or something and the fine was like five
00:40:55
million dollars yeah but so who did you
00:40:58
tell
00:40:59
um I told Jules right that was that yeah
00:41:01
yeah because I mean I was like
00:41:03
do I tell people I don't know that
00:41:05
people want to live this in in real time
00:41:08
and I was like and I was kind of also
00:41:10
like I've just spent [ __ ] four weeks
00:41:13
on this bloody Island going through
00:41:14
absolute hour like you can sit on a
00:41:16
comfy couch and watch it bloody from
00:41:18
your living room for for however long so
00:41:21
um yeah and I don't know I think I think
00:41:25
me not telling people
00:41:27
it probably gave people an idea that I
00:41:29
did good and just generally for the mere
00:41:32
fact that I was away for six weeks
00:41:36
um with you know all the with all the
00:41:37
lockdowns and stuff right
00:41:40
um people know you get to the to the
00:41:42
pointy end but just just where that what
00:41:45
just where that fell no one really no
00:41:48
one really knew because I was um I was
00:41:51
to work at the edge a couple of years
00:41:52
ago when uh filming was going on and um
00:41:54
Tammy who works on George FM and Tegan
00:41:57
who works on my FM they both went away
00:41:58
yeah and uh Tegan was back like five
00:42:00
days later on a moon boot then Timmy was
00:42:02
back the next week and you're like okay
00:42:03
you guys really didn't do that good yeah
00:42:05
how bad how bad was it you said six
00:42:07
weeks of Hell or whatever was it no I
00:42:09
mean the weather was atrocious like the
00:42:12
we had we had these easterlies that were
00:42:14
just gnarly like really really gnarly is
00:42:17
that was that towards the end when Susan
00:42:19
devoy had like a she almost had like a
00:42:20
tantrum like she had a break down on
00:42:22
screen it just like it was like
00:42:23
unprecedented wind so like when it
00:42:26
wasn't raining it was one day so even on
00:42:28
the nice sunny days it was just
00:42:29
Relentless and when you're on the beach
00:42:32
sleeping on the beach and it's windy
00:42:34
it's loud like the waves are crashing it
00:42:36
was just Relentless wind and wind grinds
00:42:39
you down like I've grown up on and
00:42:41
around the water so I definitely felt
00:42:44
more comfortable but even for me like I
00:42:46
was like this is this is really grinding
00:42:49
me down and it was grinding others down
00:42:51
as well because it's just
00:42:53
when like you know when it's one day
00:42:54
it's just bloody annoying you can't you
00:42:56
can't it's loud and it just like
00:43:00
physically as well you know you get wind
00:43:01
burn and
00:43:02
um and then the rain the rain started
00:43:05
and and that was we had like two pretty
00:43:07
gnarly cycle you know extraopable
00:43:09
Cyclones that came through
00:43:11
um one of them towards the back end of
00:43:13
the show was
00:43:14
um
00:43:14
was the one that
00:43:17
um the boating accident around North
00:43:19
Cape happened in where that you know the
00:43:21
Five Five Guys lost their yeah lost
00:43:23
their lives and I remember that night
00:43:25
and it was it was horrible and we were
00:43:27
only
00:43:28
you know
00:43:30
just so it felt like a stone's throw
00:43:31
away from where that you know where that
00:43:33
happened and that was a crazy crazy
00:43:35
night
00:43:37
um just so windy so wet and
00:43:41
so it was like the weather was horrible
00:43:44
and there's no like there's no luxury
00:43:47
it's like they don't whisk us away and
00:43:49
go to a hotel room or you know give us
00:43:51
showers or clean clothes or anything
00:43:53
like that it's like what you've got
00:43:54
you've got if the if the Camp starts
00:43:57
falling apart maybe here's some rope and
00:44:00
you can fix that
00:44:01
um
00:44:03
you're there and essentially like they
00:44:05
don't show more of that I think like
00:44:07
they don't show how brutal it gets
00:44:09
um
00:44:10
maybe they don't want to show put in the
00:44:12
celebrities through through that kind of
00:44:14
thing but it is like survival like you
00:44:16
know yeah is it yeah it is yeah they
00:44:18
don't really show that is yeah it looks
00:44:19
like you're having fun to be honest yeah
00:44:21
and you know if your brother listens to
00:44:23
this he's going to think you're a little
00:44:24
[ __ ] he's done like the around the
00:44:26
world yacht race where you're way harder
00:44:27
than that yeah
00:44:29
if you combine the America's Cup Volvo
00:44:33
Ocean Race and an Olympics yeah now we
00:44:37
were joking about this the other day
00:44:38
because someone asked me they're like oh
00:44:40
did you draw anything from from you know
00:44:43
your brother's success and I was like
00:44:45
now Matt wait
00:44:48
not comparable not comparable at all
00:44:51
because
00:44:52
um I was like it'd be like them going
00:44:54
and doing you know going sailing the
00:44:57
mirrors cup doing really well out of the
00:44:58
water and then you come back to the boat
00:45:00
park and if if Jimmy spill doesn't like
00:45:02
you and it you know he's going to put
00:45:05
you up for eliminate it doesn't care if
00:45:06
you've got a fast boat yeah yeah if your
00:45:08
mates don't like you you're up you're up
00:45:10
[ __ ] correct it's
00:45:13
um no you are right though like that
00:45:14
stuff there is stuff that's way harder
00:45:16
and when you strip it back the game
00:45:19
itself
00:45:20
yeah it might be a bit hard but at the
00:45:22
end of the day
00:45:23
you're on a beach in the far north plain
00:45:25
silly Beach Games trying to win money
00:45:28
for your charity life's pretty easy in
00:45:31
the grand scheme of things yeah and I'm
00:45:32
I'm
00:45:33
um yeah I'm taking the piss a little bit
00:45:35
I've got no doubt it's tough and uh that
00:45:37
was evident from the amount of people
00:45:38
that sort of self-eliminated like tanked
00:45:40
out yeah so many this year right like my
00:45:43
king Tapped Out yeah um Karen O'Leary
00:45:45
yeah uh the Doctor Joel guy yeah Cassie
00:45:49
um yeah so yeah they were there were
00:45:52
lots and I think even I think even like
00:45:55
with people
00:45:56
that didn't necessarily tap out
00:45:59
um
00:46:00
they were they were tapping out you know
00:46:02
just from being grounded by the show
00:46:04
yeah yeah
00:46:06
um but yeah I think there was a couple
00:46:07
of you know there are a few reasons to
00:46:09
that there was obviously
00:46:11
um the loss of anger which I think kind
00:46:13
of
00:46:13
oh that's mentally just to heighten the
00:46:16
emotions of of everyone
00:46:18
um and then you know
00:46:20
yeah I do think that you know just the
00:46:24
show itself is is it it's a it's a hard
00:46:26
show you know you are on the whole time
00:46:28
with cameras and you are running on this
00:46:31
massive High the whole time
00:46:33
um so yeah
00:46:36
the sacrifices kind of comes in because
00:46:38
you just you just are wrecked and it's
00:46:41
that's that's by Design I suppose they
00:46:43
want to grind you down they want that
00:46:45
tension they want that friction they
00:46:46
want that uncomfortableness that
00:46:48
awkwardness yeah
00:46:49
um what about food
00:46:50
rice and beans yeah just just that was
00:46:53
it and if you want a challenge
00:46:55
um if you want a challenge you might get
00:46:57
some nachos or McDonald's and tim tams
00:47:00
and stuff and those were great but there
00:47:03
was also like there was way too much
00:47:04
food like you'd want nachos and then you
00:47:07
have way too much nachos and then oh you
00:47:10
didn't see
00:47:14
and then was throwing up in the bush
00:47:17
um
00:47:18
yeah did you know her before this season
00:47:21
to voice she was um like one of the
00:47:22
greatest squash players to ever walk the
00:47:25
earth
00:47:26
um I I want to get here on the podcast
00:47:27
she's amazing yeah well I I didn't know
00:47:30
Susan but I know um Susan's son Julian
00:47:33
and through through running you know and
00:47:36
absolutely incredible Runner one of our
00:47:38
one of our best
00:47:39
um
00:47:40
and
00:47:41
so I knew her through through Julian but
00:47:45
I was weird because I didn't know if she
00:47:47
knew that I knew Julian like and we were
00:47:49
on different teams for a while so
00:47:51
um it wasn't until we had that merge
00:47:53
that we were like okay like you know we
00:47:56
we know each other and
00:47:58
um we she's just like an absolute
00:48:00
absolute
00:48:01
Powerhouse comedian like she just
00:48:03
dropping zinger's left right and she's
00:48:05
hilarious right and cause a spade a
00:48:07
spade She's Not Afraid or intimidated by
00:48:09
anyone yeah pretty
00:48:11
um yeah pretty respectful to
00:48:13
um I've just I've heard as a person and
00:48:16
her achievements but for digging to them
00:48:18
for so long on that on that island like
00:48:20
it wasn't easy and you know it really
00:48:23
got to her but she she's stuck in there
00:48:25
yeah she's a tough cookie right yeah
00:48:27
real tough cookie right and um what
00:48:30
about you you told me you've got like 50
00:48:31
minutes so our time is just about up
00:48:33
you're heading up North yeah um actually
00:48:35
we talked before about um you know your
00:48:37
parents breaking up and the tightness of
00:48:39
your family and I think this is a good
00:48:40
example of this like um the place that
00:48:42
you're going to is the the family home
00:48:44
and that's where I came and stayed with
00:48:46
um Christian and Tanner all those years
00:48:47
ago and uh when when your parents split
00:48:49
up and they sold the property like you
00:48:51
you guys you and your Three Brothers
00:48:52
didn't want to see it go so you guys
00:48:54
yeah just bought it yeah it's a really
00:48:56
really cool yeah it's a special special
00:48:59
place to us and um spent spent so much
00:49:02
time there over the years and and you
00:49:04
know it's where we want to
00:49:07
um you know see our kids and spend time
00:49:09
with them in the future and I I just
00:49:12
love I love the far north and in general
00:49:14
like as a as a place I don't think
00:49:17
there's anywhere in New Zealand that's
00:49:18
more beautiful than than the far north
00:49:20
and we're very lucky to to grow up there
00:49:23
and it's you know why we all love the
00:49:25
water so much because we're out always
00:49:27
out on the water and playing in the
00:49:28
ocean
00:49:30
um it's a very special place up north
00:49:33
and
00:49:34
I reckon it just keeps getting better
00:49:36
and better the further north you the
00:49:38
further north you go so yeah heading up
00:49:40
to
00:49:40
um heading up to kitty kitty for
00:49:43
for a long weekend it was yeah it's
00:49:45
gonna be nice just to unwind from the
00:49:48
craziness of this week and it's my
00:49:49
partner jules's 30th birthday this week
00:49:53
so I've kind of been overshadowing it
00:49:55
this week it's gonna be nice so um nice
00:49:57
to take her away and go out with some
00:49:59
mates and just um settle them and and
00:50:01
yeah have a cruisy weekend yeah will you
00:50:04
talk about the um the stress of this
00:50:05
week but it's actually I suppose the
00:50:07
compounding expressive this year like
00:50:08
you've been hanging on to the secret for
00:50:10
months and months and months that's a
00:50:12
lot yeah and when you don't know as well
00:50:15
how it's gonna come across or how you're
00:50:18
going to be
00:50:20
um perceived like you can you know you
00:50:22
kind of try and tell yourself oh who
00:50:23
cares what what people think about you
00:50:25
but you can say that yeah but it's not
00:50:28
true like of course you care what people
00:50:30
think about you like
00:50:32
um you can disregard it but like you
00:50:34
don't want to be the person that comes
00:50:36
across as as a massive villain or or
00:50:40
someone that's hated like you know I you
00:50:42
know I
00:50:43
I do want to have a career and and TV
00:50:46
like I'd love to be in that space going
00:50:49
forward and
00:50:50
um yeah to
00:50:53
that's a massive worry it's like [ __ ] is
00:50:56
this what if I'm an absolute you know
00:50:58
dbag on there and
00:51:01
um everyone you just you just always
00:51:03
think of the worst case scenario
00:51:06
I think it's just what we human nature
00:51:08
human nature to do and yeah man I have
00:51:12
some sleepless sleepless nights thinking
00:51:14
about that show really oh yeah while it
00:51:16
was on or before it was on but like just
00:51:18
both like straight after the show it's
00:51:20
like what just running through in your
00:51:21
mind all the things that you did or just
00:51:23
just re like just going through it
00:51:25
because when you're on it it's like when
00:51:28
you don't have a phone and you don't
00:51:29
have the news you don't have you know
00:51:31
your morning coffee run or you know any
00:51:34
you know all those little nice perks but
00:51:36
all the [ __ ] that you have in life as
00:51:38
well when you're only focused on a silly
00:51:41
game
00:51:43
it really and you're thinking about that
00:51:45
for four weeks straight like playing the
00:51:47
game during the day and then you're
00:51:49
talking about it with your brand and
00:51:50
then you're thinking about it when
00:51:51
you're in bed and then you're dreaming
00:51:52
about it and you come out of it it's
00:51:54
four weeks straight of thinking about
00:51:55
one thing and one thing only it takes a
00:51:58
while for that to
00:51:59
get out of the head yeah
00:52:02
yeah it must have been I'm just thinking
00:52:03
about something weird for the people
00:52:04
that were kicked off before you I
00:52:06
suppose there's a period of time where
00:52:07
they go back to their normal life but
00:52:09
they're still thinking about what's
00:52:10
going on and who's there and yeah it
00:52:12
must be yeah was it weird after that
00:52:15
length of time to return to sort of
00:52:16
normal life it was weird yeah um and it
00:52:20
did take me it did take me a couple of
00:52:23
wait you can see that you know you can't
00:52:25
digest it at the time like you have you
00:52:27
won't yet have a little you know
00:52:28
celebration but then you're straight
00:52:30
back into it you're on a plane the next
00:52:31
day back home had a small set like cool
00:52:35
this is great with with jewels and then
00:52:37
it's like bottle this thing up and don't
00:52:40
sell it and that's not human nature like
00:52:42
you you normally not anytime you want or
00:52:44
get a promotion or you know you have
00:52:46
those successes and you can kind of say
00:52:48
to someone cool I did this and then
00:52:50
they're like oh well done that's awesome
00:52:51
but this was like bottled up don't tell
00:52:54
anyone and then
00:52:56
yeah you kind of sit on this sit on this
00:52:58
thing that kind of you wanna you wanna
00:53:01
scream it from the rooftops yeah because
00:53:03
you're so happy but but you can't yeah I
00:53:06
suppose you're thinking about it you had
00:53:07
to tell like jewels that you won because
00:53:09
you needed to tell someone not for the
00:53:10
fact that you won but the fact that you
00:53:12
can tell her all the other [ __ ] that
00:53:13
went on yeah on the on the way to that
00:53:15
web yeah yeah and that's I think
00:53:17
um
00:53:19
why I I did it as well as you know chin
00:53:22
you that I made it to the point here I
00:53:24
mean I got the phone call as well
00:53:26
um so got got to call her which is which
00:53:28
is really nice
00:53:29
um when you're proposing yeah you guys
00:53:31
been together like 10 11 years you know
00:53:33
I've been asked that question twice now
00:53:34
you and Woman's Day
00:53:36
[Laughter]
00:53:45
for year 21st yeah yeah all those years
00:53:48
ago yeah you were fairly early into the
00:53:50
relationship then yeah um but no we
00:53:53
we've got a really good relationship
00:53:54
with super
00:53:56
um happy down in in Tauranga and and you
00:53:59
know
00:54:00
it's a great place I absolutely I was
00:54:02
reluctant to move there did the long
00:54:04
distance for a bit but once I finally
00:54:06
moved down there I was like why didn't I
00:54:07
come here we've got a we've got a nice
00:54:10
thing going on we're we're happy with
00:54:12
where we're at um just to see what does
00:54:14
I mean like marriage marriage but just
00:54:16
does she want to get married Wednesday
00:54:17
yeah I think we both so one thing that's
00:54:19
probably one of the things we agree on I
00:54:22
think we both you know
00:54:24
uh happy with the concept of of marriage
00:54:28
um and yeah we'll see we'll see Dom yeah
00:54:31
yeah okay still young man yeah
00:54:35
it's only been 11 years
00:54:38
