September 11, 202450:07
00:00:00
we finally got the the update guys which is incredible the Saturday Night Live
00:00:07
current update Stars yeah listen we've had Colin Jo
00:00:13
akroy who's a big update guy we had Tina Fay we've had Colin Quinn we've had
00:00:21
Kevin nean update guy Dennis Den Miller love update it's such a fun part
00:00:27
of the show and we get to get Jimmy F too sorry oh yeah some of the inner
00:00:32
workings of update and what it's like being on update versus uh hosting update
00:00:39
and uh Michael Chay has a Eddie Murphy pillow in the background we do joke
00:00:44
about right and I told it Eddie Murphy's story and I didn't even know we had the Eddie Murphy pillow I saw the pillow was
00:00:51
in the background it was like uh they they couldn't have be a nicer couple of
00:00:57
fellas and and they're really really um humble I mean I I think
00:01:03
they're still earning their way they feel they are and I think uh their chemistry is great um and they're
00:01:11
killing it on us and now yeah these done a great job uh they have a big following
00:01:17
and they have a big show coming out on peacock we're going to talk about um that's going to be tomorrow night looks
00:01:22
like so uh that would be September 12th correct yes yes Michael Chay and Colin
00:01:30
Jo New York after dark and PE do a live show it's going to be a lot of fun and
00:01:36
uh we get into all the ins and outs of the show so let's get right to it here they
00:01:41
[Music] are you do not wake up with that hair do
00:01:48
you like that this I just got a haircut but I I I go to sleep with it and don't
00:01:53
do anything so I kind of Dana and I are gonna spend a half hour after angry about this I tried to get Heights CU I
00:02:01
knew col was going to bring it I got a lot of product here I wanted to get Heights because I knew you're going to
00:02:06
bring it so I have 18 different sprays and lotions and ointments and there's fillers lotions sprays do you wash it
00:02:14
every night like do you wash it every night at how do you do it I did I don't anymore I wash it every four nights
00:02:20
thank you that's a good question thank you are you because because I'd strip it down and they didn't they Michel
00:02:26
relating to this at all next day hair is the best hair we just
00:02:33
had to talk to wardrobe about like what we're wearing for this thing we're doing this week and I was like what's Michael wearing and she was like you know what
00:02:40
Michael's wearing he's wearing a hat and he's wearing a hoodie met him I was like all right yes
00:02:46
is that black t-shirt for 150 podcast episodes yeah I like having a uniform I
00:02:53
don't want to think too much there's uh there's certain there's some kind of magic with a black T-shirt and a white
00:03:00
comedian I don't know what it is but I don't know if it's a Carlin thing but it's like a yeah it is it is isn't it
00:03:08
there was a comedian who had a joke that he was like I have I'm on a I'm on a diet it's called wearing a black
00:03:14
T-shirt that's exposed now d uh it's a little bit Carin
00:03:22
early Carlin he did some specials in a black T-shirt um I don't know I have no brand
00:03:28
and I don't have much of personality our guests today are col let's do the thing about the show up
00:03:35
front first we won't and then we can Circle about to it around okay so is it
00:03:42
September 12th because I thought you said this weekend that's Thursday Thursday yeah is that that's not a
00:03:47
weekend right just a day yeah so Thursday
00:03:52
September 12th Friday these guys are GNA be live because they can only do live it's
00:03:58
in their contract yeah right is it going to be and Michael Chay present New York after dark first question 900 p.m. is it
00:04:07
Twilight or is it dark I'm not saying it really matters but is it after dark at
00:04:12
900 PM in in September is it a lie in the title already uh misinformation is
00:04:18
the word of the day okay uh 900 P PM Eastern be dark I'm gonna predict it's dark yeah I think so too 6 PM Pacific
00:04:27
what time will it be on in Hawaii by the way that was a real gotcha question about the
00:04:34
title we're really drilling you it's going to be live I guess live at 3 3M
00:04:41
Hawaii okay those we got six viewers over there that want to know American
00:04:46
the American Samoans watching it's a breakfast show have to get pretty early
00:04:52
pretty early in americ okay so here's what i' want to know honestly what is the show
00:05:00
really is it is it an hourong update or no what is it oh my God no I I didn't
00:05:05
think so okay it's it's really a it's just a
00:05:10
evolving event it's not written yet
00:05:16
evolving it's very Saturday Night Live it's like six months away in your guys heads even though it's like in 24 hours
00:05:24
right SNL is all about just a month is like 10 years away so you'll get down to
00:05:31
it after this podcast it is weird that ever right ahead because you're just
00:05:37
putting out fires the week you're at SNL so you're never like everyone's like
00:05:42
well you must write ahead a little bit if you know someone's coming and you kind of even process anyone that's coming beyond that week no anything you
00:05:50
think of in August uh would never possibly make it to the show Even though
00:05:56
two weeks before anything you think of will never ever make make it to the show I don't know why that I would always
00:06:02
take a sketch idea and go I'm saving this for Michael Keaton and they're like dumb idea anything good get it out but we had
00:06:10
like 200 white male hosts in a row that was like our problem was like there was no every host was like the next guy so
00:06:17
if you have a generic sketch you're like we just wrote it for Jeff Daniels then Tom Hanks then Alec bald you know what I
00:06:23
mean so it's very hard to go and then you have a female host but you try to mix it up but it was hard to write
00:06:29
different things every week that was my excuse by the way check that
00:06:35
hair I don't think it's much different now though is it yeah you've got you got a pretty
00:06:42
pretty mixed bag but it's still it was more just about bad writing on my part self I in the pitch in the pitch
00:06:50
meeting Lauren goes David anything this week I go uh nothing for you Tom Hank sorry I'm saving a couple of winners for
00:06:57
Alec Baldwin in three weeks oh that's nice okay David and I two are together and he was my opener one of my best
00:07:04
openers oh yeah and he wrote some jokes for me or added onto the grumpy old man
00:07:10
sketch so he's self-deprecating who's the more humble between you two who's the more
00:07:17
Hannah more humble true or false has any of you ever
00:07:22
said to any the other one after update if you ever do that again I'm going to kick your
00:07:28
ass oh something toward that yeah I think jalapeno business I was pretty
00:07:33
Furious about that one you just upet that it worked so well the punch well I
00:07:39
remember in like in like run through when you did it because I never heard it before the I don't remember what the set
00:07:45
the setup was but the punchline was jalapeno business and I was like if you
00:07:51
tell that joke on air I'm I'm I'm leaving I'm quitting this show and he did it on air and it destroyed and I was
00:07:59
so frustrated I was so frustrated like I don't even know what we do anymore if that I would have honestly I would have
00:08:06
honestly cut it if it wasn't so upsetting to you and then I was like I'm definitely doing this can we know what
00:08:12
the setup was or is it rather not I'd rather not know but
00:08:19
you do not have to don't remember at all but um but it
00:08:24
crushed it was a funny punchline no matter what yeah it doesn't need it
00:08:29
almost you could say it without context have you ever have you guys ever hugged each other and said love you
00:08:37
bro okay yes well one says yes one says no well yeah I was it was definitely um
00:08:44
no it was definitely a one-sided hug if it ever happened have you ever said oh no here
00:08:51
comes Sarah Sherman sliding in
00:08:56
again yeah maybe once or twice week yeah it's a Sherman week it's so funny when
00:09:02
people people like oh my God it's so she's really like going after you you know you're like I mean she is but it's
00:09:09
so clearly it's like is everything okay
00:09:14
between you and Sarah you're like yeah if it wasn't it would be crazy they're like but she said you Le you're leading
00:09:21
the new Nazi party and you're like well that was sort of a joke I think yeah why are they looking for someone where's
00:09:28
where's it coming from I like every everything I'm hearing so
00:09:33
far is that your one sponsors one thing I find interesting just watching you guys casually uh and wondering because I
00:09:41
feel like when I stepped off after seven years my final sketch was the best I ever was as far as just being out of my
00:09:48
head mentally and it seems like you guys at some point the last few years got so
00:09:53
loose and it's it's really fun to watch I don't know the way you're in playay and the way you make of each other or
00:10:00
when you surprise each other with jokes yeah do you think the 10 years just kind of wears you down into such a relaxed
00:10:07
State and confidence right that's my overarching question I'll be quiet now
00:10:13
but no first of all thank you but also like um I think everything that could
00:10:18
possibly go wrong has gone wrong so there kind of Nothing Left to be afraid
00:10:23
of in that way like it's kind of like the confidence of being so bad that how
00:10:29
much worse can it get kind of thing you know what I mean but it's still it still gets like you know it's it's still SNL
00:10:36
so it's still nerve-wracking but it's it's a lot more fun when you realize
00:10:41
there'll be another show next week and and we're just having fun you know we
00:10:47
were there were at least a good three years of feeling like it was bad or not
00:10:53
working or work I I certainly like personally feeling like I was trying to
00:10:59
find it or figure it out and everyone's seemingly not into it and and you know
00:11:04
feeling like like and not knowing if you're going to get fired every summer for at least three years so
00:11:10
um once we got past that existential dread of doing it and whatever then it
00:11:15
started to get more fun for certainly for me I felt that way is there something when uh you are replacing
00:11:22
someone that there's you feel like the audience is mad that you're there or they're just not ready yet and they gota
00:11:27
you got to sort of win them over after a while yeah totally I always feel like it's like the the stepdad effect it's always
00:11:33
like it doesn't matter how good you are you're not dad to them you know and then it's you kind of stick around for long
00:11:40
enough that they start to kind of just know you as the job they call you dad there's always two
00:11:49
kids G remember the Gilbert Godfrey thing about the coming in because he came in in 80 right like First cast left
00:11:58
that he was like mhm imagine at the height of beetle Mania that they were like we're
00:12:04
replacing the Beatles with and he's like that's what it felt
00:12:10
coming in as the second after that first SNL cast that was that was pretty grim
00:12:15
and then they got uh Eddie Eddie right right yeah was Eddie with
00:12:23
Gilbert he came in a little bit later there the show was going on and then Eddie kind of came in as a feature I was
00:12:30
in New York at the time and I knew a guy had seen he said you got to see this kid Eddie Murphy at Comic Strip you know
00:12:38
he's crushing he's a baby he's in a crib come see I go really how good is he I mean come on he's no Dan arroy or
00:12:45
something he goes no you got to see this kid and then boom let's ask Michael's
00:12:52
pillow is can't I turn to the right side too kind I've never turned to the right
00:12:58
side in a Zuma life no I'm always like or on update when there's a graphic I'm always
00:13:04
like
00:13:09
[Music] no I'm curious to you guys like do you have an overriding sort of producer
00:13:16
that's helping you uh with everything because or do you actually produ like
00:13:21
because cast will come up throughout the week right and kind of go I got an up idea and who are they who do you blame
00:13:27
when you kill a bit you know I mean everyone loves to slide in and be front and center with you guys
00:13:35
at this point they got hats on they got props I mean some really really they got hats well they got yeah they're playing
00:13:41
esos I don't know you know they hiding guard and they're doing some very creative potent stuff and so and you
00:13:48
guys are very good at playing straight to them at um but do you have is there a
00:13:54
political environment about that the closer to the I feel like the closer to the end of the season the the office
00:14:01
gets more and more crowded you know like when when when The Season's about to end but yeah I think it's pretty I don't
00:14:07
know sometimes we're like looking for them sometimes like there's times where like we don't have features and we don't
00:14:13
understand why like there's like two or three options at the we have to like send a reminder like hey if you guys got
00:14:18
like features let us know but yeah it's always kind of tricky you got to Ping them have you ever had no update uh
00:14:25
features we did last last year remember we had an oops oops all oops no features
00:14:31
whatever it oops no Fe but that's because it got cut not because we didn't
00:14:36
have yeah cut dress so it was just we went straight through for whatever it was like eight to 10 minutes or
00:14:42
something and it was kind of a fun different energy to to because we' never
00:14:47
done it before it was kind of fun to feel out you're like I've never worked 12 minutes straight in a row but but I
00:14:54
did it uh you know um when I would do features and if if there was no Adam doing a song there was
00:15:02
no Farley going I says I says and I'm like oh I'm the only one oh thank God
00:15:08
and then you get cut you're like what the [ __ ] this is the only time I thought I was the only I was the only option you
00:15:15
went with nothing yeah it's horrifying yeah because you guys I guess have never been a guest on update he Jay did one
00:15:23
feature there where he rolled around to the other side that's right basically endorsed
00:15:29
Japanese style toilets if I remember correctly yeah I got a I got a a day I was really excited to talk about it but
00:15:35
I couldn't find a new setup to get into it so I was like can I just do a feature where I just talk about it for two
00:15:40
minutes and I got to do it it blew my mind lar I mean it is interesting
00:15:46
because a little bit like Rodeo because you're in there in your chair maybe Chris Rock's ahead of me or something or
00:15:52
someone else and then they go out of the shoot that you make a left turn and then it's 20 million people you know all that
00:15:58
and then you come back around so it's the last time I did church lady I think is with you guys and Colin it's where
00:16:06
I'm in the shoot and then you roll out the chair is actually rolling and uh
00:16:12
then you hear then the Crowd Goes you wait for
00:16:18
all the you know all the the love and then and then and then you deconstruct
00:16:24
all the all the Goodwill but it's NW wracking coming out there um is it more
00:16:29
was it even when you were on the show more nerve-wracking to come on update than to be in another like a regular
00:16:36
sketch kind of only because of that waiting and then Dennis Miller's out there Christ s who invented the lemonade
00:16:43
picture all right you know and he's crushing uh and you follow it on the
00:16:49
cards and then they wait and they push you out and so the audience doesn't see you
00:16:55
I think at home if it's still this way where they go to one shop but you're still out there and so the crowd starts
00:17:00
to get something's happening and it kind of throws their does it throw that last joke because they're looking at
00:17:06
sometimes it especially if it's like Bowen coming by in a giant like moth
00:17:13
costume wait what's this going to be and they're half listening you're like no no no hear this one last thing I have to say about Hillary you know you're like
00:17:20
this bone bone hang on hang on okay bring them out I have to say that if the update's not going slow it's a little
00:17:26
less nerve-wracking if update is crushing and maybe the first guest is
00:17:31
crushing it's a little more okay but if it's if it's a bad night it's less
00:17:38
nerve-racking Dennis Miller I think said get him next time to me or something on air I'm like God damn dude oh
00:17:45
my [ __ ] broken bat single saw my cards being you know cuz
00:17:52
they flipped through the cards during the break or whatever he looked at my cards and he thought Christ sakes scy I
00:17:58
thought you going to go down in a heap of dog de there's one not one joke in the bunch you
00:18:04
know cuz he's he's a great joke writer and mine's more rhythmic but so
00:18:10
um how many like how many like Spade in Americas did you do do you think Spade in America thank
00:18:17
you for bringing that up um you know thought it was called the Hollywood minute but no after after I left yeah
00:18:24
well after my whatever did you do it did you first do it on
00:18:30
SNL yeah no it was just I when I was leaving Lauren was was missing me Adam
00:18:37
and Chris everyone kind of left at the same time so Lauren said why don't you stay why don't you stay and do uh he was
00:18:45
petting me like this and then he goes um you can just do a five minute segment a
00:18:51
week and it won't be update you just do whatever you want I don't know why I never tried to update but I said uh okay
00:18:57
so he goes you can do field bits you can do anything you want so we just named it something stupid and then they gave me
00:19:02
one writer and I was sort of separate from the show so I did a Hollywood
00:19:07
minute once twice but I went to the World Series I did feel bits which are [ __ ] way harder than I thought and
00:19:13
you know eight hours of shooting for a two and a half minute bit maybe and then
00:19:18
came back and then that was Will frell came in and those guys so I sort of overlap with them but I didn't
00:19:24
really get the same Bond I had with the other guys cuz I wasn't really doing sketches I was just on the road and do
00:19:30
stuff okay good question in my memory I'm trying to remember like what because I remember watching those and but I
00:19:37
don't remember when what the timeline was that it felt like it was I saw you know I knew it for years really well it
00:19:43
may have only been for like a year right it was just one year and uh other than that it was just fighting for update
00:19:49
bits and uh we did love doing update like you were saying it's funny that I'm you're on the other side of it and uh
00:19:57
Dana and I did a lot of update it's it's so fun but it is scary that last few seconds when you're in the dark and then
00:20:02
you go if I just go there it's 20 million people I'm just I'm I just I'm going to get there soon but or you could
00:20:08
just walk out and go Tada and you'd be on camera but it's hard not to do that it's like a psychological thing does it
00:20:14
ever matter like whether it's something that you've done a bunch of times or it's something that you're trying like the feeling is it is it more or less
00:20:21
nerve-wracking either way well I think if Dana was doing Church light I think he'd be more
00:20:27
confident but if you're doing a new bit it's scary cuz you have to sort of get them to bite within one or two lines and
00:20:33
run with it like if you come out in a costume they kind of know what you're doing I think I got pushed out I was Jeff Foxworthy and they kind of were think
00:20:40
it's already funny because you got a little look and I have an accent and then I think I was saying how do you
00:20:47
know if you're a tornado or something at first it was an AIDS joke this sounds
00:20:52
horrible but I was like if you have it you might be the AIDS virus and so I
00:20:58
Chang it to Ebola that was a big discussion corre yeah because Downey and of course Downey
00:21:05
was probably the one going just do it I'm like Downey you're always the one pushing us out there and daring us and
00:21:11
then guess who gets fired it was not you they're like he's a year later going Spade was a good kid he was a little too
00:21:17
rough around the edges I'm like that's one you told me no one no one at home is like I bet that was a
00:21:23
Downey it's only writers later that go was that Jack Handy or Downey so overall
00:21:29
it it's fun not to take over that was it was fun and it was it's very scary and you want it to work La Lauren's thing is
00:21:36
I don't know if he always said this or not but he's his view I guess now is like that you you can't be a star on the
00:21:44
show if you if you can't be a star on update like coming out and doing a feature like you that if you know that's
00:21:51
it's really rare for someone to become a star if they if they don't score in a feature on update but I don't know if
00:21:57
that's always been the that's interesting I didn't hear that he just told me where you live is important
00:22:04
so it was and he also said about stars that are in too many movies well what
00:22:11
I've learned is they can't miss you if you don't go away right the minute the minute you get hot
00:22:17
you can feel yourself getting less hot that was a good one also following
00:22:25
his following his rules there's like no way to actually live a life everything there's so if we wrote down
00:22:32
all 200 rules oh there's so many they're brilliant some of them are just make you
00:22:37
have you heard this one and I've said this before but I thought it was I can't even believe it's Lawrence he says a
00:22:43
marriage is a prison that everyone's trying to escape
00:22:49
into he just has all these things I don't know where they come from but my dad said marriage is the only game that
00:22:55
two can play and both can lose I was like Jesus right after divorce thanks absente Dad
00:23:02
he also said the [ __ ] you're getting isn't worth the [ __ ] you're getting I'm like thanks Dad it's my fourth
00:23:09
birthday can we just eat the cake but I think that's a great thing to say about about update like they have to
00:23:16
buy you on your own not in a sketch you know what I mean like just we like you
00:23:21
or we don't yeah and that's kind of a that's kind of a interesting thing to say I agree and people I've never heard
00:23:27
that before actually that's that's a good one even if you made it up I like it I had a reverse thing because church
00:23:34
lady had her own set and was in home base and then yeah sooner or later it's where characters when they have less
00:23:40
heat then they pop out they go to die Church doesn't have a set or a show all of a sudden she's just rolling out you
00:23:48
know so they go weren't you the cold opening guy and you're like a giant said
00:23:53
he had a theme song he had movie star guest now he's just next to call he's got one
00:23:59
minute the wi the wig is not like the original wig no matter how hard and how
00:24:04
great that staff is it is never you never get back to the original um but I I just want to clarify
00:24:12
this one thing the you guys do literally surprise each other during the live show
00:24:19
yes you play practical jokes yes and that when did that start because that's
00:24:24
the I think that really creates a lot of big hook yeah it's it's huge because it goes to your relationship all I think
00:24:32
the first version of it was we had a lot of jokes that were like way too harsh
00:24:38
like the audience just wouldn't laugh at it was just way too yeah yeah they just wouldn't like we were doing we would
00:24:44
think they were funny and we but just the audience just would it would just die so we were like well one Christmas
00:24:50
we like well let's do a grab bag where for Christmas we give each other a joke
00:24:55
that was too harsh for air but and since it's Christmas we get to tell it anyway
00:25:00
I think we did that and it the jokes that bomb killed for some reason just because we off that so great life yeah
00:25:08
so then Colin was like oh wouldn't it be funny if we just did like a joke swap where we wrote jokes for each other kind
00:25:14
of just heighten in the game and that's kind of how it started and so I'm thinking he's trying to set me up and
00:25:20
he's trying to write jokes you know get me to write like soft jokes so he could write harsh jokes so I wrote really
00:25:27
harsh jokes and he did not write harsh jokes the first one I kind of just like
00:25:33
overshot it and then it just became what it is yeah I think it's really interesting
00:25:39
that the idea of clarity you know that when you did that little setup for it then the crowd went crazy it's very it's
00:25:47
sketch right it's standup anytime I watch Young standups doesn't go over I go they're just not quite sure what you
00:25:54
were going for so it's very yeah I mean even like standup we could talk about a
00:26:00
sketch idea that bombed at dress rehearsal and it can be really funny
00:26:06
when you're hearing it and people like how's that not on the show and you're like well we definitely tried and it was
00:26:11
a pretty clear non-response yeah you guys have that lane you're on
00:26:16
you're currently on SNL and so yeah you can talk all about and that the audience is obvious going to lean forward about
00:26:23
that inside baseball it's the greatest joke I ever got for update and they wouldn't let do it and you're like okay
00:26:29
what is exactly and it's also too like the that version of the sketch is like
00:26:35
15 seconds that's opposed to four minutes of of yeah script so it makes it
00:26:41
a lot cleaner and faster a lot of times it's just one joke and then we kind of stay in there too long but for for joke
00:26:47
swap we once we kind of figured out that if we just offer up the context of a
00:26:53
situation then almost anything could work then it just became like well how far can we go just have fun with
00:26:59
it Dan I don't know if you remember I had I had a dirty dirty bit on update
00:27:05
and I was so sure it was going to work this is so horrifying I don't know if you guys go I don't know if you guys go
00:27:11
to read through but um at read through I uh I do it it's basically it's dirty so
00:27:16
it's like different ways of of uh masturbation so I'm like oh who was it
00:27:22
buddy wacket I did all these ones about the Yankees and then we did Tommy that
00:27:28
some it didn't even get past read through yeah that was in Tommy Boy yeah so Ca Cameron Diaz what the jokes were about her maybe
00:27:35
she was the host or something and it didn't work and I was like [ __ ] and then in Tommy Boy I go hey can I cram these
00:27:41
in here I'll just I'll give them to Farley and it made no sense in the scene but the movie's about break pads so
00:27:47
we're like let's just let's take a break from talking about riveting break pads
00:27:53
yeah and so we put those kind of things in and then it's so rare to a new home
00:27:58
for it but like you were saying with your joke made me think of that like you you just look at it from a different angle and you go oh maybe this will
00:28:05
work by the way both both Tommy Boy and Trading Places I would argue and also
00:28:11
both Dan arroy um maybe but both have plots that you would in no way like
00:28:19
third acts third acts that you would never think are going to land in a
00:28:24
comedy one is orange Futures right in
00:28:29
and break pad merging schemes in timey and they both work really well
00:28:36
you're like whoa how did those go get pulled off yeah even a pitch would not have been green lit I think it was green
00:28:42
lit first and then they're like a movie about break pads are like say no more in
00:28:47
Ohio you're right usually broad comedies are really straining in the third act
00:28:53
like just get this [ __ ] done man because we've done all the joke they're kind of smarter plots than you would
00:29:00
expect and I feel like you it's a good example of the audience will go with you for if it's actually well thought out
00:29:08
yeah some movies that are good and funny I don't remember the plot you know what I mean I just go like what was that I
00:29:15
what was the pitch I don't know I just thought those guys were funny and the movie is funny and I'm like it's got to be something
00:29:23
[Music] wispy how do you guys deal with um like sort
00:29:30
of where the edge is like you know you can't make Tropic Thunder today
00:29:36
right I mean maybe maybe today today I think you can you find the audience is
00:29:42
looser recently in a way as far as jokes that are a little outside the lanes is there kind of a I think it's
00:29:50
sort of like um I think a lot of times it's us like
00:29:56
like just people in the indust industry kind of fear what is possible by
00:30:02
backlash but so we kind of like pull back and then blame the audience for what we think the audience is going to
00:30:08
react but I think I think people are the same as they've always been they they
00:30:14
just want to laugh if it's funny and they trust that you're you're you're being fun I think like you could get
00:30:20
away with a lot if you meanwhile yeah where it's coming from like what is
00:30:26
a you know yeah whether whe the intent is rarely what they think it is like most Comics are just saying even if it
00:30:32
sounds horrible you're just trying to get a surprise laugh or get something you don't really mean anything you're just like this is a curveball joke and
00:30:39
then yeah blow back what's that maybe out of desperation who knows it could be
00:30:45
anything of course that's most my bit of that yeah I think you do get exhausted
00:30:51
um trying to second guess yourself and you know I don't know I don't know the first person to say oh you can't say
00:30:57
that you know or we can't well we couldn't do that it's so funny you know but I do think you get exhausted by that
00:31:03
notion and then you just start just saying whatever you want you know wait by way go ahead made me think of because
00:31:11
uh when I went when I went home to s island like a little while ago I saw
00:31:16
that I had DVD compil I sorry VHS compilations of SNL from the period you
00:31:24
guys were there and that it's so crazy you were in there was a called the bad boys of SNL do you remember a spade the
00:31:34
bad boys of SNL and iade rock Spade Rock Schneider Sandler
00:31:41
Farley Farley I think the like my first memory of SNL was my family I think I
00:31:48
don't know if it was the 20 20th anniversary 20 something it was like some compilation show that was on and
00:31:56
they was showing Cho and broccoli and every like I could not understand what
00:32:02
was happening at all I was like what I don't get it just sounded funny like and
00:32:08
everyone was laughing so hard I was like oh it must be great because all the older people people ask me about they
00:32:15
send me broccoli meem show Dana I'm like mention to me more than anything
00:32:22
else and I have no idea why I only did it never seen my family laugh that was
00:32:27
your first show yeah that's crazy really he came out of the gate B had church lady too uh church lady was the last
00:32:35
sketch during dress and because everyone thought it was going to bomb including me you know then it killed it moved up
00:32:41
to the and then that came out yeah I got a freaky lucky for show but we only had like six cast members then you know
00:32:48
everyone got to do a lot chopping for just a second because
00:32:55
everyone listening to our podcast just how did did you guys I know you've been asked this a lot get on SNL you know
00:33:02
your little path there and I this is the final time you'll be ask this so just we'll never ask you again you can make
00:33:08
it you can make it I did stand up they saw me boom it doesn't have to be but in
00:33:14
our office but we're in I'm in my dressing room and Chay in his office on 17 have you guys done have a lot of people done it from the offices here or
00:33:20
is that a rare I thought you were on 17th but the dressing room looks it's kind of like have you had it painted
00:33:26
that's your dressing room fancy got a little round window or is that a prop what is that what's that termite doing
00:33:32
back some kind of some kind of lot of a lot of woodwork the size of his dresser room is
00:33:40
is disgusting you don't have a big one do you I have a f we we share a dressing
00:33:46
room for I don't know the first five years but then Co happened we couldn't
00:33:52
you see that deep deep Corner in his dressing he's not at the other end of his dressing room you see that deep
00:33:57
corner he has kindly [ __ ] he's in a huge he's in a sweet look at this a look at
00:34:05
this I've never never seen that where like Will Smith's trailer or something it's [ __ ] you have your own bathroom you
00:34:13
he has his own bathroom in his dressing room that's it yeah it's always flooded it's
00:34:23
literally call Jo has Will Smith's trailer on Hancock yeah I was like what are you doing in
00:34:30
there he had a double decker I think on that one on Hancock that's a good isn't that one I like that movie
00:34:37
it's a great movie it's very underrated it is very underrated so where where's your
00:34:44
we as we had Bowen on recently where is your guy's headp space right now just you're still like ah the premiere is so
00:34:53
so cares now not even going to think about it are thought about this live
00:34:59
special we're doing on Thursday how okay how long is the live special is it a hour hour and a half that sounds right
00:35:05
right sounds oh is oh it's live okay and um they give you a chunk of time and they say you got obviously it sounds
00:35:11
funny and you guys can put together a squadron of it's going to be you guys plus guests surprise dropin Jerry
00:35:19
seld surprise dropin Chris Rock no we don't know yet no I'm just saying wish
00:35:25
helping you guys low lower very soble kidding
00:35:31
Barry maybe you've seen this next on TV even though he hasn't been on TV yet he's not that good this up and CER has
00:35:39
making been making some noise at the comedy seller it's his first time Onision you're gonna break some people
00:35:46
for their debut yeah hopefully yeah oh that's interesting okay I would I would
00:35:52
love when you go to the comedy seller and they clearly didn't know who you were and they'd just be like half hour
00:35:57
comedy Central you've seen him around you're like
00:36:02
wait up but they I feel like someone still says it like half hour comic I don't think they've done half1 standup
00:36:09
Spotlight no one's ever seen it he's young Comics even clubs and colleges all
00:36:15
over the country that's clubs and colle it's open for Heidi Gartner at the
00:36:20
Wilshire comedy Playhouse Dana would be bad at this when you go I was at the comedy store the other night they're
00:36:26
like hey right before I walk out I I always think there's like an MC and they go oh no by the way and I'm walking up
00:36:33
they go you bring up Bill squank Meer and I'm like who what and then I go up
00:36:38
and I'm like all the whole time I'm stressing going what was his name yeah and I have no credit so I'm like this
00:36:44
guy what are you gonna say about this [ __ ] guy always killing right and
00:36:49
left of the town he's the Talk of the Town I'm not even going to say his name you're going to freak out here he comes
00:36:55
he'll tell that happen that happens to me during like warmup like I got to do warmup for the show yeah and sometimes I
00:37:02
don't know the music guest or I don't know I don't really remember what their
00:37:07
names is I'm like what the [ __ ] is the name of that band some band I've never heard of and i' probably will never hear
00:37:14
him again Hot House Flowers we would go through the bands and we' guess ahead of time who's going to stick around I'm
00:37:21
like Nirvana no pearl gem no Eagle ey Cherry yes
00:37:29
eagley Cherry that was when I hosted eagley Cherry it took me so long to realize
00:37:35
that eag cherry was just a person like a b because I never kind of KN I just thought it was a band not oh
00:37:41
Colin you gotta have a cool name man eite Cher is a cool name wasn't quite enough and it's a birth name
00:37:50
right American Indian I don't know I don't remember enough during the band I
00:37:55
I go here comes Eli Cher and then I run off and they RI my velcro suit off hey we should say this is on peacock
00:38:03
yeah oh we should yeah yeah yeah peacock and uh peacock we only have a few more
00:38:09
questions a great name for a streaming platform the gentlemen from peacock are on ready why why don't we just call it
00:38:16
big [ __ ] and get more and then you go Lauren where will we do this fun special and he
00:38:22
goes peacock maybe peacock we have a deal with peacock I to say I love it
00:38:28
because I I can't stay up that late but I love watching SNL at
00:38:34
8:30 in the yeah that's right I mean that's been what like the last four or
00:38:39
five years that's for the oldies that's us it hurts it hurts what we're allowed to get away with too cuz a lot of times
00:38:45
we'll have like dirty stuff and they like well we can't do it because we're on at 8:30 you're like ah oh really that
00:38:51
is 8 o' we're like we didn't choose that yeah our standards is like way worse now
00:38:57
even a live streaming platform has standards that not no no not not for SNL
00:39:02
SNL SNL it's at 8:30 by yeah it goes by the standards that are on the west coast
00:39:09
but but it's only on peacock it's not on NBC at 8:30 right no no no the SNL like
00:39:15
the regular SNL is on NBC at 8 oh at 8:30 oh okay I'm just doing it I'm
00:39:21
getting on peacock I didn't know it was actually on Dan thinks his laptop
00:39:27
I'm always on live streaming I gotta say I got what application do I
00:39:34
push I don't like all these channels we didn't have a channel we didn't have a
00:39:40
TV we didn't even have a life dude try watching football you I have 85 man24
00:39:47
I'm gonna do that you're GNA do a lot Dana's gonna drop by this year and just run around do
00:39:52
like a do like the uh hat trick he's going to run into update he's going to monologue he's to be with the music
00:39:59
guest music that's exciting as H are you guys excited about 50th 50th is going to be fun yeah just
00:40:05
to watch I'm a little I'm slly anxious for the show because the 40th was so fly
00:40:12
by to see your pants and it actually worked out that I feel like the fear is
00:40:17
like it's going to be you know it was the band part will be good
00:40:25
well the and then how big it is right like gigantic car uh concert at Radio City Music Hall on Thursday when we'd
00:40:31
all want to be writing and doing stuff no when is the concert I thought it was sun on Thursday and then the show's
00:40:37
Saturday then oh it's Thursday I don't know what it might be it might be Thursday or Friday and then I think the
00:40:43
show is Sunday which I kind of oh think it's actually Sunday Sunday how much
00:40:48
have you written of that Colin oh oh yeah like just like 30 sketches so far for that I remember I saw Higgins when I
00:40:54
was at the 40th and I go I like the people like I I know some SNL people that call me and they go who would I
00:40:59
call about what sketch I I want to pitch them for the 50th I go it won't be on don't worry you don't have to call I
00:41:05
said I don't think they're going to accommodate every 700 cast members and say well what do you want to do I think
00:41:12
you get the biggies and then yeah I want to do Wayne's World and we finally acknowledge our
00:41:17
[Laughter] age wig hey Wayne We Don't look the same
00:41:25
like we did before I'm 80 just
00:41:31
dream I just got pubes they're gray look Wayne cutting to at the 40th cutting to
00:41:39
love its during the in memorium so yeah you know what he said the other day he
00:41:44
goes he goes they want they want to do that joke again I said once is
00:41:50
enough I go I would do it dude it I said it it might and will be the only air
00:41:56
time just take it it's going and it gets a [ __ ] laugh again he L it every time
00:42:02
they cut to him it was a laugh I'm alive hello
00:42:09
jealous yeah all right we gotta let these guys go go ask him some one more question then yeah I feel like we've
00:42:16
answered zero of your questions but not really you guys are um I don't know I
00:42:21
mean I kind of when I'm on these shows I I always feel like artistic people have a a thing in their head that they don't
00:42:29
they're impostor syndrome or they're not that good and I just want to say you guys are incredible on
00:42:35
update um and really else really great and I don't know I I maybe I'm corny
00:42:41
maybe I'm Mike Douglas maybe I'm M Griffin but I do like telling people that when I'm and it's always sincere
00:42:47
but do you guys have you know when you come on to SNL it's been 50 years and there's there was nor McDonald brilliant
00:42:54
There Was You Know Tina and you know and so there is this Giant Cannon of brilliant people and you guys are right
00:43:01
up there now so I mean I put you in in with anybody oh man I really even if you're lying I mean
00:43:09
I'm not saying the first year I thought that but I'm saying as you guys progressed you wouldn't have made it
00:43:15
this long if you weren't good and a progressed now you're we saw some when we were there and we saw some before we
00:43:20
were there so yeah I mean everyone has their opinions but 10 years is a great run and they would they wouldn't be
00:43:25
doing if it wasn't killing I'm just when you you guys come on I'm happy I'm mean I'm intensely relaxed you
00:43:31
know because I just feel like this is going to be good that means the world from you guys it's that's that's that's
00:43:38
insane part why we're doing it now why we even thought of it a thing to do so really appreciate it we don't mean to
00:43:45
embarrass you but I don't say that to every guest right David I don't say that to everybody you do not we haven't had
00:43:50
an update team on in a while but you have not seen I just want I just was a casual Observer and then I'm like damn
00:43:57
these guys are getting [ __ ] good you know it's like really good listen we're mad about it too now if you guys yeah
00:44:05
we're actually kind of angry [Music]
00:44:11
too what about Colin's foot is it okay because I yes it's totally fine kites
00:44:17
yeah had a bunch of antibiotics and then it's I mean there's probably a bunch of scars but it's totally fine in terms of
00:44:23
I have toes and stuff did you walk on is that what it was when you surfed and hit coral and then I Barefoot
00:44:30
for the next five days in dirt and sand which was a bad combo it was funny that the Olympics were that far away from the
00:44:36
other Olympics if I know we now go to Tahiti it was stunning you actually needed to know the
00:44:43
time zone difference and when it was a can I ask you a surfer question for the
00:44:48
final final with the two dudes out there on the surfboards talking and there's just no waves I mean there was a wave
00:44:54
and then it's like 15 minutes it's the Olympic final we're going to Crown a champion they're on their boards in the
00:45:00
water chatting for it's there were a couple people I thought who really got
00:45:05
screwed like I thought John John Florence kind of got screwed like uh Jack Robinson beat him who was great and
00:45:12
obviously a very deserving uh you know deserving that he moved on but like John John kind of was waiting because the
00:45:18
waves were so good and then there was they just died for 10 minutes and he never got a chance at another wave which
00:45:23
sucked and also Medina a little bit Gabriel Medina he got one great wave and
00:45:28
then never had a chance so I feel like those guys both kind of got screwed that's right I noticed that he got one great wave and then that's all you just
00:45:35
wanted to be monster waves but it just doesn't always happen that way but it was crazy to see be out there in a boat
00:45:42
and watch one day it went in the morning from being like four to six feet high to
00:45:48
18 feet within you know six hours it was nuts what's the biggest wave you've ever
00:45:55
surfed cuz Staten Island doesn't have a big surf scene Big Scene It has a great
00:46:01
if you're looking for hypodermic needles in the surf it's got a great um I I would go to I would I go to
00:46:09
mon talk around here if I go I mean I've been probably 10 I've surfed like a 10
00:46:14
foot wave is probably the most I've ever done I'm not are you ripped I mean are
00:46:19
you most Surfers I find are just ripped because they're just constant out their paddling I'm not I don't get to I mean
00:46:27
you don't get to do it but Michael's nodding that you're he's
00:46:35
definitely he's in that chair he's got his abs on the whole time you know I S one of those balls
00:46:42
those Swiss you're like this welcome to eat we
00:46:48
know you're relaxed if you do that on one of those Swiss exercise we'll know you guys are okay how much longer can we
00:46:56
have you guys on update you're just you got outside projects you're doing game
00:47:01
shows you're doing standup specials you're doing so now there's no reason to leave right you can just kind of come
00:47:07
and go there's no reason to stay either I don't know if you can you're of it never I'm
00:47:17
trying to do I just want to leave okay you're gonna I just wouldn't leave all
00:47:22
right let's give a last plug to this gig we got last plug peacock peacock September 12th Thursday Colin Jo
00:47:31
which I think present New York after dark while it's twilight 900 PM Eastern
00:47:37
on peacock and on NBC or just peacock oh
00:47:42
we think it's just peacock we think it's just you guys are gonna be saying what
00:47:48
the [ __ ] and this next [ __ ] guy right yeah this [ __ ] this [ __ ] some
00:47:54
people think he's good I don't [ __ ] [ __ ] know bring him up didn't you get bad intros in the day
00:48:02
I mean I used to get the worst intros some guy some guys think this guy's funny I don't I don't know maybe you get
00:48:09
