This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers several intriguing cases including the murder of undercover officer Lester Garnier, the abduction of six-year-old Morgan Nick, and the mysterious messages from deceased loved ones.

In Walnut Creek, California, undercover Vice officer Lester Garnier is found dead in his Corvette, shot twice. Witnesses report seeing two women near the scene, but no suspects have been identified. The investigation reveals Garnier's complex life, including his work against a brothel linked to local officials.

In Elma, Arkansas, a mother, Colleen Nick, recounts the night her daughter Morgan went missing at a baseball game. Despite extensive searches and media coverage, Morgan remains missing. Colleen later establishes the Morgan Nick Foundation to help families of missing children.

The episode also features stories of individuals who claim to have received signs from deceased loved ones, including Michael Landon's daughter, Cheryl, who shares her experiences of feeling her father's presence after his death.

Finally, the episode discusses a series of violent robberies in Vallejo, California, attributed to the Roer Room gang, and the tragic murder of cab driver Lucy Terrell in Banff, Alberta, whose case was eventually solved.

00:01:30
Francisco on a quiet morning a shopping

00:01:35
sitting alone in the parking lot a man
00:01:38
seems to be napping behind the wheel but
00:01:41
the man isn't asleep he's
00:01:44
dead the cause of death was determined
00:01:47
to be two bullet
00:01:49
wounds this was an extremely cold
00:01:52
blooded deliberate killing the sort of
00:01:56
person that would do something like this
00:01:59
is extremely dangerous expain the victim
00:02:02
is identified as Lester Garnier an
00:02:05
undercover Vice officer with the San
00:02:08
Francisco Police Department who lived in
00:02:10
nearby
00:02:12
conquer there was very little evidence
00:02:15
left at the crime scene that would give
00:02:16
us much help in identifying the criminal
00:02:20
we do have a few fingerprints that have
00:02:22
not been identified but we've been
00:02:25
unable to find any motive at all for the
00:02:28
killing of Lesar
00:02:31
there were many sides to Lester G on the
00:02:34
job he was a dedicated police officer
00:02:38
but after work he lived Life in the Fast
00:02:40
Lane why was Lester murdered well the
00:02:43
reason may lie somewhere in these
00:02:47
contradictions if he was off duty Lester
00:02:49
was usually behind the wheel of his
00:02:51
prized 1984
00:02:54
Corvette he enjoyed the good life but
00:02:57
was also devoted to his parents
00:03:00
leester was a wonderful son he always
00:03:04
was there for us he gave us
00:03:09
security knowing that if
00:03:12
anything happens he's always there for
00:03:17
us those who knew him said that Lester
00:03:19
had a reputation as a ladies man hi
00:03:23
that's a beautiful car his natural triy
00:03:25
with women also came in handy on the job
00:03:30
his beat was San Francisco's Mission
00:03:32
District the neighborhood he was born
00:03:34
and raised in and an area with its share
00:03:37
of Street Walkers Wester often duped
00:03:40
prostitutes by posing as a
00:03:43
customer we found that he had made
00:03:45
numerous arrests for
00:03:47
prostitution we certainly examined that
00:03:50
aspect of his life and we weren't able
00:03:53
to find any connection with our case we
00:03:57
interviewed several of the prostitutes
00:03:59
that that Lester had arrested and found
00:04:02
that many of them spoke highly of him uh
00:04:06
even though he had arrested them
00:04:09
he wanted to do a good job and the type
00:04:12
of job that he had he had to make sure
00:04:15
he made All the Right
00:04:16
Moves before his murder one of Lester's
00:04:19
final assignments was to stake out of
00:04:21
brothel said to be patronized by Civic
00:04:23
leaders and police officers after it was
00:04:26
raided Roger Boaz a local mayor
00:04:29
candidate pleaded guilty to charges of
00:04:32
having sex there with underage
00:04:34
prostitutes several police officers were
00:04:37
also investigated but only one was
00:04:39
charged and later fired rumors
00:04:42
circulated that corrupt members of the
00:04:44
police force had Lester murdered in
00:04:46
retaliation for his work in busting the
00:04:50
ring we did address those issues and did
00:04:54
a very thorough investigation but we
00:04:56
found no connection at all uh between
00:04:58
Lester Garnier death and um the Roger
00:05:02
boas case or any other matter for that
00:05:08
matter the evening of his death Lester
00:05:11
left his home to meet a friend in San
00:05:14
Francisco yes Steve less than 20 minutes
00:05:17
later he called from his car with a
00:05:20
message no during this conversation he
00:05:23
cancel the meeting with his friend
00:05:24
saying it was getting late yeah maybe
00:05:26
some other time okay after that we don't
00:05:27
know what happened to him until his
00:05:29
vehicle showed up in the parking lot
00:05:32
shortly before 11:30
00:05:34
p.m. that time period is very
00:05:37
critical as a portion of our
00:05:39
investigation naturally we searched for
00:05:41
Witnesses and uh we discovered that uh
00:05:45
there was a carpet layer working in one
00:05:47
of the stores late that evening as he
00:05:51
went out to his truck he heard what uh
00:05:54
sounded to him like
00:05:57
firecrackers it was around the 4th of
00:05:59
July so he discounted those sounds as
00:06:02
firecrackers shortly after he looked up
00:06:05
and saw two women walking across the
00:06:07
parking lot the women entered two
00:06:11
different vehicles and
00:06:14
left the witness described one of the
00:06:16
women as being in her late 20s about 56
00:06:20
and said she weighed about 110 lb the
00:06:23
other was described as being in her
00:06:25
mid-30s tall with a slender
00:06:28
bill
00:06:29
we also located one witness who was
00:06:32
actually driving through the lot as he
00:06:34
drove past the Corvette he saw a woman
00:06:37
open the passenger door and exit the
00:06:40
vehicle he saw her walk around the
00:06:43
vehicle and appear to look in the
00:06:44
driver's side of the
00:06:47
Corvette it's possible that these were
00:06:50
just two separate sightings not
00:06:53
associated with each other however it's
00:06:55
also possible that they are somehow
00:06:58
related under hypnosis the second
00:07:01
witness helped police create a composite
00:07:03
drawing of the blond-haired woman her
00:07:06
appearance was similar to the other
00:07:08
eyewitness the scription when we showed
00:07:11
this to the carpet layer he felt that
00:07:13
this sketch closely resembled the
00:07:15
shorter of the two women that he saw
00:07:17
walking across the parking
00:07:19
lot there is one other clue suggesting
00:07:23
this woman might be involved in the
00:07:26
murder police used the fingerprint found
00:07:29
in Lester's car to identify the
00:07:31
blond-haired woman seen by the witness
00:07:34
she is a Scottish national who's lived
00:07:36
in the United States since
00:07:39
1985 although she's been named as a
00:07:41
suspect authorities don't have enough
00:07:44
evidence to file charges the mayor's
00:07:47
office in San Francisco is offering A4
00:07:50
million reward for information leading
00:07:53
to an arrest in this

00:07:56
case next a night out at a baseball game
00:07:59
game turns tragic when a parent
00:08:01
discovers that her 99-year-old daughter
00:08:03
has been
00:08:15
abducted Elma
00:08:18
Arkansas on a summer night Colleen Nick
00:08:20
took her six-year-old daughter Morgan to
00:08:23
a little league baseball
00:08:25
game we'd made the choice to go just
00:08:27
Morgan and I just to have girls night
00:08:29
out and it was just such a um a warm
00:08:33
close um fun night want to come with us
00:08:37
to catch some fireflies well I don't
00:08:39
know if my mom will let me two local
00:08:41
girls asked Morgan to come play with
00:08:43
them mom can me and my friends go catch
00:08:46
fireflies oh I don't think so
00:08:49
honey that should be are you sure it's
00:08:52
safe sure finally against my better
00:08:54
judgment I told her that she could go
00:08:56
and play and she threw her arms around
00:08:58
my neck neeg gave me a big hug stay
00:09:01
where I can see
00:09:03
you she's nak we could see them very
00:09:06
clearly and in the last time that I
00:09:08
turned to look Morgan was running back
00:09:10
and forth
00:09:13
plan but when the game ended the two
00:09:16
girls returned to the field without
00:09:19
Morgan girls girls where where's Morgan
00:09:23
bi a car getting the sand out of her
00:09:24
shoe which car I don't know yours I
00:09:27
guess I'll be right back okay Morgan
00:09:31
Morgan I went over to the car looked
00:09:34
around the outside of the car um opened
00:09:36
the doors looked inside the car thinking
00:09:38
she had gotten in even at one point
00:09:40
looked under the car just thinking she
00:09:42
has to be here somewhere and within a
00:09:45
couple of minutes all the people and
00:09:47
most of the cars were gone and it was
00:09:49
very clear that Morgan wasn't there I
00:09:52
can't find my little girl calm down
00:09:54
where was the last place of saw her one
00:09:55
of the coaches question the with these
00:09:58
little girls girls look at me when you
00:10:00
were in the field were you there alone
00:10:02
they remembered seeing a man whom they
00:10:04
describe as creepy talking to Morgan out
00:10:06
in the field I'm going to go call 911
00:10:09
thank you one of the coaches had a cell
00:10:11
phone and made the initial 911 call to
00:10:14
law enforcement they arrived within 6
00:10:16
minutes and began um an immediate and
00:10:18
massive search for Morgan that
00:10:21
night but they found no trace of Morgan
00:10:24
the media was alerted and flyers were
00:10:26
posted weeks stretched into months
00:10:29
and finally years with no sign of Morgan
00:10:33
Nick it's the worst Terror that any
00:10:35
parent can ever feel there's such um a
00:10:38
sense of it it not being real somehow it
00:10:41
does not seem possible that your child
00:10:43
could be missing that someone could have
00:10:44
taken your
00:10:46
child Colleen Nick turned her personal
00:10:49
tragedy into a public Crusade she
00:10:52
created the Morgan Nick Foundation a
00:10:55
nonprofit organization that assists
00:10:57
families with missing children
00:11:00
yes yes come down we really need your
00:11:01
help Colleen has become involved in the
00:11:03
search for a missing girl named
00:11:05
Jacqueline castan kidnapped when she was
00:11:08
just a newborn by now Jacqueline would
00:11:11
be a young girl her mother still hopes
00:11:13
to find Jacqueline who disappeared on an
00:11:16
otherwise ordinary spring
00:11:19
[Music]
00:11:21
day outside Phoenix
00:11:24
Arizona Olivia Castaneda arrived at a
00:11:27
swap meet with her baby
00:11:31
my husband dropped me off there
00:11:33
with my two babies nelli my 2-year-old
00:11:37
and Jacqueline my 4month old baby I took
00:11:41
Jacqueline out of the car with her car
00:11:43
seat and N I took her
00:11:47
walking before meeting her mother inside
00:11:50
Olivia needed to use the restroom she
00:11:53
finally found a portable bathroom
00:11:55
finding you get too cramped and dirty
00:11:57
she made a decision that would lead to
00:12:00
tragedy Jacqueline couldn't fit inside
00:12:03
so I just took my T roll i y inside
00:12:06
restrooms cuz she could have walked away
00:12:08
if I left her
00:12:10
outside I was in the restroom like for a
00:12:12
minute when I came
00:12:14
outc jacine wasn't there anymore jacine
00:12:18
jacine hoping that her mother had taken
00:12:21
the baby Olivia rushed into the SWAT
00:12:23
beat mom mom do you have jacine do you
00:12:26
have the baby my God I lost the baby we
00:12:28
got I go find her but I felt more upset
00:12:32
and more nervous when I saw my mom that
00:12:34
she was by herself she didn't have the
00:12:36
baby and that's when I felt I was going
00:12:39
to
00:12:41
die I just didn't know what to do hi
00:12:45
baby have you seen my baby after 20
00:12:46
minutes of searching Booth to Booth the
00:12:49
police were called what my baby is
00:12:52
missing police immediately sealed off
00:12:55
the swap meat there was an officer
00:12:57
stationed at all the exits and along the
00:12:59
fence line and as cars were leaving we
00:13:03
would check the vehicles as they left as
00:13:05
people were leaving the side exits
00:13:06
through the gates we would go ahead and
00:13:08
check them make sure they weren't
00:13:09
carrying an infant or had a car
00:13:12
carrier Jackin was not
00:13:16
found hi this is Colleen Nick from the
00:13:19
Morgan Nick Foundation Colleen heard
00:13:21
from a national missing children's
00:13:23
agency that a baby girl had been
00:13:25
abducted in
00:13:27
Arizona yeah hold on second let me see
00:13:29
if I have that we're able to do um
00:13:31
posters we're able to email Jaclyn's
00:13:34
information out to people who might not
00:13:35
otherwise get it and then to also
00:13:37
counsel her family over the phone if
00:13:39
they would like to talk to us colen
00:13:42
traveled to Avendale Arizona to meet
00:13:45
Olivia she had her daughter stolen too
00:13:48
and she knows what you're feeling and
00:13:51
it's it's um nicer to talk to someone
00:13:54
that knows what you're going
00:13:55
through but it wasn't your fault
00:14:00
is that
00:14:02
okay
00:14:04
oops I find that the greatest need that
00:14:07
a family has just to be able to look
00:14:09
someone in the eye and to know that
00:14:12
there are other people who haven't given
00:14:13
up hope to know that you're going to
00:14:15
survive this that you're going to come
00:14:17
through this and that hopefully your
00:14:20
child is going to come home and I think
00:14:21
that is what I try to bring to families
00:14:24
the most is that hope and that
00:14:27
reassurance the search for jacn castan
00:14:30
continues she can be identified by a
00:14:33
unique heart-shaped birth mark on her
00:14:36
upper right arm Jacqueline would now be
00:14:39
a young girl this computer AED photo
00:14:42
shows what she might look like
00:14:44
today the service that Colleen provides
00:14:47
for families with missing children has
00:14:49
not detracted from her primary goal to
00:14:52
find her own daughter Morgan I believe
00:14:55
and I I hope every single day that I get
00:14:58
up that that today is the day that
00:14:59
Morgan comes home and every night when I
00:15:01
go to bed and she's not back yet I know
00:15:03
that I'm one day closer to getting her
00:15:06
back this is a computerage photo of
00:15:09
Morgan Nick who would now be in her
00:15:11
early 20s she has blonde hair and blue
00:15:14
eyes this is a drawing of the man scen
00:15:17
talking with Morgan police would like to
00:15:20
speak with him in connection with her
00:15:24
disappearance next did television star
00:15:27
Michael Landon send a gift to his
00:15:29
daughter from Beyond the
00:15:39
Grave what do a Christmas ornament $300
00:15:43
in cash and the fragile red rose all
00:15:46
have in common some would say they were
00:15:49
all signs from Heaven gifts sent from
00:15:52
Beyond the Grave one by television star
00:15:55
Michael Landon one by grandfather Herman
00:15:59
stos and another by a college student
00:16:02
named Joe
00:16:04
McCarthy a student at Notre Dame Joe had
00:16:07
just returned home after his freshman
00:16:09
year when he was killed in a car
00:16:11
accident he was just 18 years old when
00:16:15
Joe died there's number one there's
00:16:18
emptiness in your heart and in your mind
00:16:22
it's like where is he is he okay I kept
00:16:25
thinking at the time if he could only
00:16:26
just talk to me
00:16:30
just one time
00:16:32
and everyone's grieving around you and
00:16:34
so you're thinking I wish I knew it's
00:16:38
just that thought is he
00:16:41
okay the McCarthy didn't actually expect
00:16:44
an answer and then 3 days after the
00:16:47
funeral I was uh going through the
00:16:50
through the basement out into the into
00:16:51
the garage
00:16:53
and um I saw the angel that tops our
00:16:56
Christmas tree laying there
00:17:02
since Joe died in June and we had the
00:17:05
Christmas ornaments stored in an
00:17:06
upstairs closet I thought it was kind of
00:17:08
strange but didn't really think a whole
00:17:09
lot of it that same day Joe's mother
00:17:13
also found something as she was
00:17:15
vacuuming and I picked it up and I just
00:17:18
thought it an ornament and I just looked
00:17:21
at I thought this is one of the
00:17:22
ornaments from the Christmas tree why is
00:17:23
it here and I just set it aside I set it
00:17:26
on a shelf we had there
00:17:30
that evening Dennis told Kathleen about
00:17:32
the angel that he had found it was right
00:17:35
there in the middle of the floor I
00:17:37
almost stepped on
00:17:39
it you know I found an angel today
00:17:43
too and I went and got it and showed it
00:17:45
to him and it said it said Joseph on he
00:17:50
said it's a sign he's okay the McCarthy
00:17:53
had four angel ornaments each engraved
00:17:56
with one of their children's names
00:17:59
this one had been
00:18:01
Joe's I looked at it and and saw Joe's
00:18:04
name on there it was it was really an
00:18:06
incredible feeling the fact that he that
00:18:08
he gave his his mother an angel and I an
00:18:10
angel on on the same day to me was was
00:18:13
pretty
00:18:14
powerful it may seem amazing but the
00:18:17
McCarthy's experience is not that
00:18:19
unusual Dr Lewis LR reports more than 50
00:18:23
similar experiences in his book
00:18:26
afterdeath communication this happens
00:18:29
just an innumerable amount of times we
00:18:33
can't explain it science will never be
00:18:35
able to explain it uh it's a gift to the
00:18:38
heart and that's what explains
00:18:41
it Herman stegos was 69 when he died
00:18:45
just 3 weeks before Christmas he was
00:18:48
especially close to his oldest grandson
00:18:50
Anthony Herman's apparent message
00:18:53
arrived with the holiday mail kids
00:18:57
presid from Aunt Terry when this package
00:18:59
came it was kind of like it was exciting
00:19:01
for the kids because it took their mind
00:19:03
off of you know The Grieving they opened
00:19:06
up the packages the wrapping paper was
00:19:07
all over the shipping stuff was all over
00:19:09
my mother's living room floor so I asked
00:19:12
Anthony if he could clean it up and take
00:19:14
the box out of the
00:19:15
garbage Anthony was on his way out when
00:19:18
he was suddenly stopped in his tracks he
00:19:21
says that his grandfather spoke to him
00:19:25
when I heard his voice it it did freak
00:19:27
me out it it was scary he said Mom Pop
00:19:31
just told me I should look under the
00:19:32
flap of the Box she just
00:19:34
said quit playing around she thought I
00:19:38
was playing a game but I wasn't I said
00:19:41
Anthony throw the box out and I thought
00:19:43
he was playing with me he said no Mom
00:19:45
you don't understand I heard him twice
00:19:46
he said look onto the flap look under
00:19:48
the
00:19:48
flap wedged in the bottom flaps of the
00:19:51
box was an envelope look it's it's a
00:19:54
card inside were three $100 bills one
00:19:58
each for Anthony his brother and his
00:20:01
sister Beth is convinced this gift would
00:20:04
have been lost if her father had not
00:20:06
spoken from Beyond the Grave I think
00:20:09
that was the biggest message in the
00:20:11
whole thing that you know Grandpa's
00:20:12
still here and Grandpa's still watching
00:20:14
you and Grandpa spending the holidays
00:20:15
with you and I didn't leave and I didn't
00:20:18
abandon you and this is the way that he
00:20:20
could tell them you know that I'm still
00:20:22
here and this was a sure way of getting
00:20:24
out his message that you're not alone
00:20:25
that I'm still here with you and I still
00:20:27
love you
00:20:29
to have had an experience of this nature
00:20:32
uh when love is rekindled the person is
00:20:35
able to reconnect with life again uh to
00:20:39
get some energy back to be able to look
00:20:43
at themselves and their mirror and say
00:20:45
maybe there is some meaning to what has
00:20:49
happened were the experiences of Joe's
00:20:52
family and Herman's Family just
00:20:55
coincidences not if you ask Cheryl
00:20:57
Landon
00:20:58
daughter of actor Michael
00:21:01
Landon in 1991 Michael Landon was at the
00:21:05
height of his career he was the star of
00:21:07
Highway to Heaven in which he played an
00:21:10
angel sent to Earth to help people there
00:21:13
was a warmth about him there was this
00:21:16
love the spontaneity it was like he was
00:21:18
my my angel from heaven my father from
00:21:22
heaven when Michael died of cancer at
00:21:24
age 54 Cheryl was devastated
00:21:29
was the greatest loss of my life my best
00:21:33
friend my mentor my
00:21:36
protector
00:21:38
my guidance everything my security it it
00:21:43
was all
00:21:44
gone and I started
00:21:48
hearing my dad's voice my father would
00:21:51
come to me in
00:21:53
dreams and I thought boy I must be
00:21:56
really grieving cuz I'm hearing in my
00:21:58
dad's voice I'm seeing him in my dreams
00:22:02
Cheryl made a promise to carry on her
00:22:04
father's Legacy of emphasizing good
00:22:06
deeds and
00:22:07
good-heartedness her first step was
00:22:09
writing a book called I promised my dad
00:22:13
but as the publishing deadline
00:22:15
approached Cheryl felt more and more
00:22:17
nervous about the public appearances
00:22:20
necessary to promote the
00:22:22
book I remember going through so much of
00:22:26
the emotions and I really thought how
00:22:28
could I go on and do these television
00:22:30
shows successfully and I very clearly
00:22:33
heard my father during the day say when
00:22:36
you go to do your first show I'm going
00:22:38
to leave you a long stem red
00:22:42
rose finally the day arrived Cheryl was
00:22:45
in New York City nervously preparing for
00:22:48
her first talk show appearance she says
00:22:51
that's when she heard her father's voice
00:22:54
again I heard his voice again I he was
00:22:57
right
00:22:58
there and this time he told me to find
00:23:01
the fountain in Central Park the strange
00:23:04
part is that I knew exactly where this
00:23:06
Fountain was never being there before it
00:23:08
was like I was
00:23:09
guided exactly to this Fountain maybe it
00:23:13
is let's go check it
00:23:14
out when I had gone down to the bottom
00:23:16
of the stairwell there at my feet
00:23:19
exactly where I had stopped was a long
00:23:22
stamp red
00:23:23
rose this is just the way my father said
00:23:26
it would be it was like I had discovered
00:23:29
a treasure of
00:23:31
gold I was so happy I was so full of
00:23:37
encouragement that it was just like a a
00:23:40
a
00:23:41
boost of of love a boost of
00:23:46
encouragement Cheryl's friend who
00:23:48
witnessed the moment snapped this
00:23:50
picture to commemorate
00:23:52
it are the grief stricken understandably
00:23:56
willing to clutch at anything that that
00:23:58
might bring them Comfort or is there
00:24:00
really something going on that is beyond
00:24:03
explanation for the families we've just
00:24:06
met their answer is simple they held the
00:24:09
proof in their
00:24:12
hands next a rash of robberies by
00:24:15
heavily armed thugs plagues of
00:24:17
California
00:24:26
town
00:24:29
Vallejo California North of San
00:24:34
Francisco During the 6mon period 29
00:24:37
local restaurants were robbed at
00:24:42
gunpoint police believe the Takeover
00:24:44
style robberies were committed by
00:24:46
violent street thugs known as the roer
00:24:50
room
00:24:51
gang nobody move nobody breath shut up
00:24:54
when the two robbers came in there just
00:24:57
ordering us around telling us to open
00:24:59
things if we weren't fast enough they'd
00:25:01
curse you know and tell us to do it
00:25:02
quicker so we just gave them this stuff
00:25:05
and hope they'd hurry up and leave what
00:25:06
you looking at from the time they came
00:25:09
in to the time they left it probably
00:25:10
took about 2 minutes all right man I got
00:25:12
it come on let's go man it was
00:25:14
frightening the fact that I mean they
00:25:16
have guns right there they could just
00:25:18
kill you if they wanted to some of the
00:25:21
language they've used uh during the
00:25:22
commission of these has been very
00:25:24
specific uh they've used uh terms such
00:25:26
as don't make this a 87 which in
00:25:29
California is the penal code section for
00:25:31
murder the pattern was fairly consistent
00:25:33
throughout in that it involved uh
00:25:36
generally two black males that would
00:25:37
enter an
00:25:39
establishment they always wear masks
00:25:41
they're generally of the knit cotton ski
00:25:43
mask type uh weapons have varied from
00:25:46
handguns uh revolvers semi-automatics to
00:25:49
more recently Uzi type weapons they've
00:25:52
gone so far as to strike people on the
00:25:54
side of the head with the handguns uh
00:25:56
kick them when they're down uh whether
00:25:57
or not they're going to get more
00:25:58
aggressive uh we always fear that and we
00:26:01
don't want to encourage uh any giving
00:26:03
them any opportunity to escalate that we
00:26:05
don't want to see anyone acting as a
00:26:06
hero or taking them on I've got it man
00:26:09
come on let's go let's go Robert seemed
00:26:11
familiar with the layout of each
00:26:12
restaurant and went about their business
00:26:14
with a cold efficiency within minutes
00:26:18
the thieves vanished leaving police with
00:26:20
almost no clues only terrified
00:26:26
victims update
00:26:29
this case appears to have been solved
00:26:32
several key members of the Romer room
00:26:34
gang were sent to prison on other
00:26:36
charges once they were behind bars the
00:26:39
rash of assault style restaurant
00:26:41
robberies came to an abrupt
00:26:48
end the resort town of B in Alberta
00:26:51
Canada is nestled in the snowcapped
00:26:53
Rocky
00:26:55
Mountains 21-year-old Lucy Terell moved
00:26:58
to bamp for its peaceful friendly
00:27:01
atmosphere she soon found work as a
00:27:03
part-time cab
00:27:05
driver Lucy came here for paradise and B
00:27:08
was known as The Paradise town
00:27:11
everything was great for uh the people
00:27:13
the place uh the way of life uh
00:27:16
everything was Greatful
00:27:20
Lucy on May 17th Lucy spent much of the
00:27:23
evening working the downtown tourist
00:27:25
trade near the end of her ship she had
00:27:28
taken in just over
00:27:30
$100 Lucy arrived at The Works nightclub
00:27:33
on spray Avenue hoping to pick up one
00:27:36
last Fair there she talked to another C
00:27:40
driver hi Larry how you doing hi Lucy
00:27:43
how bad yourself uh not too bad had a
00:27:46
little conversation at which time I had
00:27:48
looked out my window to take a look at
00:27:50
them it was a gentleman and two girls
00:27:54
cgar please just seemed
00:27:56
normal yeah I got a
00:27:58
34600 cougar from The Works Lucy called
00:28:02
in her destination to the dispatcher and
00:28:04
drove
00:28:06
[Applause]
00:28:07
away I'd done a few more affairs at
00:28:10
which time I had asked Bruce if Lucy had
00:28:14
phoned in and he said no I haven't heard
00:28:17
from her and this was about 12 minutes
00:28:19
later we started asking for her on the
00:28:22
radio at which time she did not answer
00:28:24
and after about 20 minutes finally
00:28:26
decided to look for her calling your
00:28:28
location Larry drove to Lucy's last
00:28:30
reported destination and then passed her
00:28:33
house less than a block away he spotted
00:28:35
her cat but Lucy was not
00:28:39
driving and I'd asked Bruce right away I
00:28:41
said are you in front of me Bruce he
00:28:43
said
00:28:44
no and right away he replied while the
00:28:46
guy stole in the cab but at the same
00:28:49
time I had the bad feeling you know
00:28:50
where was Lucy how come she hasn't
00:28:52
phoned us and said her cab has been
00:28:54
stolen and I told him I said well I got
00:28:56
the guy
00:28:58
Larry tale was stolen cab for 2 miles
00:29:00
and cornered it on a dead end
00:29:04
Street he caught a brief glimpse of the
00:29:06
driver who then disappeared Into the
00:29:09
[Applause]
00:29:11
Woods at virtually the same time police
00:29:14
were responding to the report of a body
00:29:16
lying in the middle of a street 2 miles
00:29:19
away Lucy Terell was dead she had been
00:29:23
stabbed repeatedly in the neck it was
00:29:27
the first murder that had occurred here
00:29:29
in 20 years uh there hasn't been
00:29:31
anything like it since and uh it's it's
00:29:34
a shock to the people that live here our
00:29:36
best information is that robbery was the
00:29:39
motive for this Murder She had probably
00:29:42
about $100 in taxi fars in the cab when
00:29:45
the killing occurred and that money is
00:29:48
missing when police examined Lucy's cab
00:29:51
they found Blood spattered on the
00:29:53
dashboard seat and steering wheel but
00:29:56
lab test came up with a surprising
00:29:58
result the blood wasn't
00:30:01
Lucy's we're surmising that the attack
00:30:04
on her took place outside the taxi and
00:30:06
that the attacker somehow cut himself
00:30:09
during the attack and bled inside the
00:30:11
taxi while he occupied it for the 20 or
00:30:14
25 minutes after the offense occurred
00:30:17
what we don't know is whether the person
00:30:19
who killed her was her last Fair may
00:30:21
have been in the taxi with her and
00:30:23
forced her to get out or it also could
00:30:25
have been somebody who flagged her down
00:30:27
and dragged her out of the taxi and then
00:30:29
stabbed
00:30:33
her 18 hours after Lucy was killed a
00:30:36
local resident found the murder weapon
00:30:38
in her driveway police learned that it
00:30:41
had been stolen from a hotel employee
00:30:44
leading them to believe that the killer
00:30:46
may have been from out of
00:30:48
town we've interviewed a lot of people
00:30:51
we did neighborhood inquiries we were
00:30:53
unable to find anybody who had seen or
00:30:55
heard anything at the time of Lucy's
00:30:58
death uh that is kind of unusual because
00:31:02
at that time of morning there's usually
00:31:03
people out on the street but it's
00:31:06
unfortunate but that's what we're stuck
00:31:10
with
00:31:11
update the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
00:31:15
have arrested Ryan Jason love for the
00:31:18
murder of Lucy Turell When Love first
00:31:21
became a suspect he refused to give
00:31:23
police a DNA sample two policemen then
00:31:26
went under undercover befriended love
00:31:29
and obtained a sample of his DNA without
00:31:32
his knowledge when it match blood found
00:31:34
in the taxi he was
00:31:37
arrested love was convicted of second
00:31:39
degree murder for killing Lucy Turell he
00:31:42
served his time and has been
00:31:45
[Music]
00:31:47
released next the story of a young woman
00:31:50
who overcame a traumatic past thanks to
00:31:53
the help of a total
00:31:56
stranger
00:32:04
Chicago Illinois July
00:32:09
1961 hidden from The Busy streets of the
00:32:11
city's South Side is the scene of a
00:32:14
crime and a family betrayal 14-year-old
00:32:18
Kathy Williams had been forced to take
00:32:20
part in a drunken party where she was
00:32:23
raped by her stepfather Clifford Starks
00:32:28
I awoke in the middle of Clifford's bed
00:32:31
with Clifford actually laying almost on
00:32:34
top of me he was naked I was totally
00:32:36
naked I remembered his hands being all
00:32:39
over my breast well I knew that that was
00:32:41
wrong and I didn't know what else had
00:32:43
happened I couldn't remember and so that
00:32:45
scared me too so and that's why I took
00:32:47
off I wrote the letter and I thought
00:32:49
that would be the end of it in a child's
00:32:51
mind I'm thinking well you know this
00:32:53
will take care of everything I can get
00:32:54
out of here I'll be
00:32:56
saved
00:32:59
the sexual assaults continued but Kathy
00:33:02
Williams was faced with even more than
00:33:04
the abusive situation at home when she
00:33:07
tried to get help Kathy ran up against
00:33:10
the influence and credibility of her
00:33:13
stepfather he was a detective in the
00:33:16
Chicago Police
00:33:18
Department Kathy Williams ran away from
00:33:20
home but her stepfather easily found her
00:33:23
she was beaten and locked in a room for
00:33:25
more than a week
00:33:27
Li I hate you you're such a l when she
00:33:31
was finally let out Kathy went to the
00:33:34
police what is your name I don't know
00:33:38
where do you live Kathy decided to
00:33:41
pretend that she had Amnesia is if all
00:33:43
went as planned her stepfather would
00:33:46
never know of her visit and she would be
00:33:48
sent somewhere else to live so we just
00:33:51
had to put her down as Jane do and I'm
00:33:53
thinking God good they'll put take me
00:33:55
someplace because anything was better
00:33:57
than going back to that hell hole that I
00:33:58
had run away from are you having
00:34:01
problems at home well if you are having
00:34:03
problems at home running away is not
00:34:05
going to solve them do you have brothers
00:34:08
and
00:34:10
sisters if you have brothers and sisters
00:34:13
and you are having problems they could
00:34:15
be going through the same thing you're
00:34:17
going through so finally Kathy chose to
00:34:19
tell the truth talk to me and hope for
00:34:21
the
00:34:23
best my stepfather has been molesting me
00:34:29
he moved she said you poor child she
00:34:31
said we'll do anything and everything we
00:34:33
can to help you everybody was empathetic
00:34:37
but for some reason I felt like this was
00:34:38
the police maybe they really could help
00:34:40
me and I felt that I had two younger
00:34:43
sisters there that they didn't need to
00:34:45
be there and and the same thing could
00:34:47
happen to them cuz I hadn't thought
00:34:48
about that but Kathy's hopes were
00:34:51
quickly shattered when her stepfather
00:34:53
was notified Sergeant detective Clifford
00:34:56
star
00:34:57
what brings you to the seventh come to
00:34:59
pick up my
00:35:01
daughter once Clifford came down to the
00:35:03
police station and flipped out his badge
00:35:06
that was the end of me Kathy Williams
00:35:09
she's detective Clifford Stark's
00:35:11
daughter and he's come to take her home
00:35:13
he became omnipotent and I became a pile
00:35:16
of nothing he doesn't want to go home
00:35:18
with you she doesn't want to go home
00:35:20
with me and lock her up I knew if I went
00:35:23
home with them I was dead me lock and I
00:35:26
refus refused and upon refusal to go
00:35:28
home with them I was then Shackled with
00:35:31
handcuffs and thrown into the back of a
00:35:32
Patty wagon like a common criminal and
00:35:34
taken off to the county
00:35:37
jail Kathy says that she spent one night
00:35:39
in jail and was then sent to a city home
00:35:42
for delinquent
00:35:47
miners I don't want to go in there by
00:35:49
myself four months later Kathy's Hearing
00:35:52
in juvenile court many of her friends
00:35:55
from the neighborhood came to testify on
00:35:58
her behalf hey Williams would you come
00:36:00
with me
00:36:01
please I'm sorry this is a juvenile
00:36:04
court proceeding and is limited to the
00:36:05
immediate members of the family you'll
00:36:07
have to wait out
00:36:12
here Kathy Williams Kathy discovered
00:36:15
that her case File had somehow
00:36:17
disappeared it had contained affidavits
00:36:20
supporting her allegations of sexual
00:36:22
abuse Kathy suspected her stepfather had
00:36:26
once again sabotaged the investigation
00:36:29
we seem to have a blank file here your
00:36:31
honor this is detective Sergeant Starks
00:36:34
this is Cathy's father the judge's
00:36:36
decision was based solely upon the
00:36:38
testimony of Clifford Starks that day
00:36:41
that moment in the courtroom she stays
00:36:43
out late at night if she comes home at
00:36:44
all she runs with a bad group of kids
00:36:48
Clifford told them that they had had all
00:36:50
kinds of trouble with me that I was
00:36:52
quote unquote an encourageable runaway
00:36:54
teenager prostitute in fact said I was
00:36:57
into drugs M Williams please
00:37:02
rise is the order of this court that you
00:37:05
be confined to the Illinois State
00:37:07
training school for girls at Geneva
00:37:09
until your 18th
00:37:10
birthday my feelings were it was the end
00:37:13
of the world I I was I I didn't know I
00:37:17
could feel that kind of pain or that
00:37:19
that much hurt each time you think it's
00:37:22
bad you just think it just couldn't get
00:37:23
worse but it gets worse and when you
00:37:26
look over over at your family and
00:37:27
friends it's like now it's it's proven
00:37:30
that I'm I'm wrong you know obviously
00:37:32
this wouldn't happened if I wasn't bad
00:37:35
and maybe I did deserve
00:37:37
this Kathy was placed in the custody of
00:37:40
a Cook County deputy sheriff to be
00:37:42
transported to reform school I didn't do
00:37:45
anything wrong yeah I've heard that
00:37:47
story before alone and frightened she
00:37:50
told her story to the deputy I'm here
00:37:52
because my stepfather was messing with
00:37:54
me your stepfather yes messing with me
00:37:57
by the time they arrived at the reform
00:37:59
school the deputy was convinced that the
00:38:01
system had made a mistake he risked his
00:38:05
own job by offering to help but
00:38:08
something about what you said and the
00:38:09
way you said it makes me believe and I'd
00:38:11
like to check it out for you who was
00:38:13
that you said you wanted me to call or I
00:38:15
didn't know if I could believe him my me
00:38:18
I had believed everybody else and I
00:38:19
still was on my way to
00:38:22
Geneva so some but something in my heart
00:38:25
wanted me to believe in the it was
00:38:26
something kind in his eyes I saw in that
00:38:28
mirror and I said maybe he would be the
00:38:30
one that could do something I didn't
00:38:32
know I just didn't have any
00:38:35
[Music]
00:38:36
idea the unknown Deputy was true to his
00:38:40
word 7 weeks later Kathy was taken to
00:38:43
the state building in Downtown Chicago
00:38:45
for an interview with a social
00:38:48
worker but Kathy I can't make any
00:38:50
promises but we're going to try and help
00:38:51
you now when you took that Patty wagon
00:38:54
ride down to Geneva you talked to the
00:38:56
Sheriff who was driving in you he gave
00:38:58
him some names I don't know what you
00:39:00
said to him but whatever it was it must
00:39:01
have been pretty convincing came over
00:39:03
here and he talked to me in addition the
00:39:05
deputy had contacted Kathy's friends and
00:39:08
the ones who had signed affidavits
00:39:10
supporting Kathy's accusations against
00:39:13
her stepfather the deputy put them in
00:39:15
touch with the proper authorities look
00:39:18
from everything we've been able to find
00:39:20
out it looks like you're in the wrong
00:39:22
place you got a raw deal he says looks
00:39:24
to me like you were railroaded he said
00:39:25
in accordin everything I have in front
00:39:27
of me you were he says I want you to go
00:39:29
back there keep your nose clean stay out
00:39:32
of trouble and we'll be back in touch
00:39:35
and I thanked him but knowing that hey
00:39:38
this is just another bubble and it was
00:39:41
going to pop and Float On off into the
00:39:43
sunset like the rest but this time the
00:39:46
system worked 2 weeks later Kathy was
00:39:49
released from the Reformatory ultimately
00:39:52
she was declared an emancipated minor
00:39:55
and went to live with friends in the
00:39:57
neighborhood it was just like New Year's
00:40:00
you know counting down for the clock you
00:40:02
know it was just a very happy happy time
00:40:04
I was finally getting to go home with my
00:40:06
new mother and father and my new sister
00:40:08
so it was a joyous occasion Kathy
00:40:12
thrived in her new family and started a
00:40:15
church group which offers counseling to
00:40:17
abuse children but she has never
00:40:20
forgotten the unknown Deputy who l a
00:40:23
helping hand when no one else would
00:40:26
every girl I guess in the fairy tales
00:40:27
wants a prince on a horse or a night and
00:40:29
Shining Armor and he'd be my KN in the
00:40:31
Patty wagon and if I if I could find him
00:40:34
I just want to say to him that many
00:40:38
people reach out for help and many are
00:40:40
refused help but because of the fact
00:40:43
that I reached out to him and he
00:40:45
acknowledged me and gave me the help
00:40:47
that I needed he gave me my life he gave
00:40:50
not only my life my I have a healthy son
00:40:53
who's here I've touched other people's
00:40:56
Liv in many ways and if had not been for
00:40:59
him none of that would have
00:41:03
happened
00:41:05
update when this story aired Cook County
00:41:08
deputy sheriff Fred Lyle was watching he
00:41:12
recalled meeting the desperate young
00:41:14
girl 30 years
00:41:16
[Music]
00:41:22
earlier I just wanted to see her and
00:41:24
tell her thank you for finding me cuz it
00:41:26
did something to me inside to know that
00:41:28
somebody somewhere down the line
00:41:29
appreciated some of the things I did for
00:41:31
them at their reunion Kathy was finally
00:41:34
able to thank the man that she credits
00:41:37
with saving her life I can't say it
00:41:39
enough times he was my hero I reached
00:41:42
out one more time I thought and he
00:41:46
reached back and here's my light and
00:41:50
here's my rainbow that's what I've been
00:41:53
waiting another years
