Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 3, Episode 7

March 09, 2017 / 42:54

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers five intriguing stories: the double murder of Michael Johnston and Rochelle Robinson, the lightning-struck Olsen family, the disappearance of Carolyn Kilby, the escapades of the Thelma and Louise bandits, and the hostage situation involving corrections officer Kay Beeman.

The first story details the tragic double murder of Michael Johnston and Rochelle Robinson in Tacoma, Washington. After a night of playing a game involving mystical creatures, the couple was found dead, leading detectives to suspect jealousy and occult involvement. Private investigator Jim Wright and psychic Nancy Meyer were brought in to help solve the case.

Next, the episode highlights the Olsen family from Elgin, Illinois, who have a bizarre history of being struck by lightning. Over four generations, multiple family members have had close encounters, with two fatalities. The family discusses their fears and the strange occurrences surrounding them.

The story of Carolyn Kilby unfolds as she disappears after leaving a bar with Dennis Keith Smith, a man with a violent past. After a series of events, including a viewer recognizing Smith during the broadcast, he is arrested and convicted for her murder.

Lastly, the episode features Kay Beeman, a corrections officer who becomes involved with inmate Edgar Kars. After a prison break, she is taken hostage, but later it is revealed that she may have been complicit in the escape. The episode concludes with updates on the fates of those involved.

TL;DR

00:01:33

00:01:39
that one night four young people were
00:01:42
playing a game that involves mystical
00:01:45
creatures fantasy and Magic you know I'm
00:01:48
getting kind of tired I think we should
00:01:51
call it a night you got to go yeah what
00:01:53
time is it what you got it's it's like
00:01:55
11: is it it's early I got to
00:01:58
go the next night two of them were
00:02:03
dead the victims of a hideous devil
00:02:08
murder 25-year-old Michael Johnston was
00:02:11
married with two
00:02:13
children Melle Robinson 19 was studying
00:02:17
to be a teacher a detective soon
00:02:20
discovered that Michael and relle had
00:02:22
been
00:02:25
lovers detectives think the motive for
00:02:28
the double murder was jealousy over the
00:02:30
affair others believe that the couple
00:02:32
was lured by a charismatic killer into
00:02:35
the dangerous world of the
00:02:40
occult Michael Johnston's body was found
00:02:42
near Rochelle's car less than 6 hours
00:02:45
after they left the card
00:02:49
game his throat had been cut and he had
00:02:52
been shot once in the head at Point
00:02:54
Blank
00:02:57
Range Michelle's body was was found
00:03:00
later that day on a remote Road 5 miles
00:03:03
from where Michael's body had been found
00:03:05
she had been stabbed repeatedly and her
00:03:08
throat was slashed to the Bone a large
00:03:12
cardboard box covered Michelle's
00:03:16
body police believe that sometime after
00:03:19
1:00 a.m. Michael and Michelle parked
00:03:21
their car on a quiet Road near a popular
00:03:24
shooting range called the Tacoma
00:03:26
Sportsman's
00:03:27
Club they were alone for a
00:03:41
while they were forced to dress hastily
00:03:45
uh relle Robinson had Michael Johnson's
00:03:48
t-shirt on inside out when her body was
00:03:51
found and uh they were removed uh from
00:03:54
her vehicle probably at gunpoint all
00:03:57
right look look evidence suggest that
00:03:59
that Michael was handcuffed then forced
00:04:01
to kneel near the front of Rochelle's
00:04:03
car don't need to do this no please law
00:04:07
enforcement believes that Michael
00:04:08
Johnson was a passive victim the real
00:04:11
Target was relle Robinson there were
00:04:14
several knife Pricks in her neck which
00:04:16
would indicate to me that somebody held
00:04:18
a knife to her throat to force her to
00:04:21
accompany
00:04:23
him detective ranicki believes the
00:04:26
killer then drove relle to an isolated
00:04:28
Road and brutally murdered
00:04:31
her he also believes that it was a crime
00:04:35
of passion you just killed my what did I
00:04:37
just do for you just killed my I did it
00:04:40
for you I did it for you
00:04:50
no investigators believe that the
00:04:53
perpetrator of this crime knew Rochelle
00:04:55
well and probably wanted to have a
00:04:58
boyfriend girlfriend relationship ship
00:05:00
with her or was an ex-boyfriend of hers
00:05:03
relle felt that she was being stalked by
00:05:06
a guy that came into her work
00:05:08
approximately 3 or 4 months before they
00:05:11
found her
00:05:13
um she felt that that he had followed
00:05:16
her home several times that he'd came to
00:05:18
work and just stared at her until she
00:05:19
left
00:05:20
work this sketch of the stalker is based
00:05:24
on eyewitness descriptions his
00:05:26
connection to the crime is unknown

00:05:33
after a year with no new leads Michael's
00:05:35
wife Janet hired private investigator
00:05:38
Jim Wright Janet uh as part of this
00:05:41
investigation I'm going to have to ask
00:05:42
you some uncomfortable questions first
00:05:45
Jim had de cleare the victim's family
00:05:47
starting with Michael's wife Janet he
00:05:49
asked her about life insurance policies
00:05:51
what type of an insurance policy did you
00:05:53
have on Michael and we both had very
00:05:56
large life insurance policies on each
00:05:57
other and that was at my insistence
00:05:59
because I was felt if something happened
00:06:01
to me I wanted to make sure that Mike
00:06:04
had the financial stability so that he
00:06:06
wouldn't have to work so that he could
00:06:07
take care of the kids were you ever
00:06:09
aware of any uh extramarital
00:06:12
relationships that Michael's
00:06:15
had he and Michelle were seeing each
00:06:18
other I don't know how long it had been
00:06:20
going on I don't know if they were going
00:06:23
to stop soon or if he was going to leave
00:06:25
me or what a case like Janet passed a
00:06:29
polygraph test Jim Wright concluded that
00:06:32
she wasn't involved in the
00:06:36
crime but he did discover that Michael
00:06:38
loved the world of Fantasy games black
00:06:41
magic and the
00:06:43
Occult Jim believes that's how Michael
00:06:46
and Rochelle met their
00:06:48
killer because of the nature of this
00:06:50
crime we believe that people who are
00:06:52
involved in possible occult type
00:06:55
activities could be the kind of people
00:06:57
that would commit this type of a Murder
00:07:01
[Music]
00:07:03
another year passed and still no leads
00:07:07
Jim decided to employ an unorthodox
00:07:10
approach Wright turned to Nancy Meyer a
00:07:13
well-known psychic who has helped police
00:07:15
on more than 300
00:07:18
homicides it was very hard on Jim
00:07:21
because I said you will not tell me
00:07:24
anything because it has no validity if
00:07:27
you tell me things ahead of time
00:07:30
I don't want someone else's theories
00:07:32
because to me if you're going to work
00:07:34
psychically and do it purely you should
00:07:36
not pre-read you should go out there and
00:07:39
work at
00:07:40
Cole without telling her where they were
00:07:42
going Jim took Nancy to the road near
00:07:45
the Sportsman's Club where Michael had
00:07:47
been
00:07:49
murdered I Can
00:07:52
Feel Michael
00:07:54
here I can feel his pain I can feel the
00:07:57
fear I can feel him bleeding we don't
00:08:00
need to do this no no
00:08:03
please I can also get images of what's
00:08:06
just happened to relle so I feel he must
00:08:08
have died
00:08:12
second because I can feel
00:08:14
that the awful images in his mind of
00:08:17
what Melle has gone
00:08:20
through
00:08:21
please I would not be able to agree with
00:08:24
the theory that would have Michael as an
00:08:27
innocent bystander not the object of
00:08:30
this killing to me from what I can sense
00:08:34
it's the other way around Michael was
00:08:36
the actual object man don't do this come
00:08:39
on Nancy felt that Michael and the
00:08:41
murderer knew each other from their
00:08:43
involvement in Black
00:08:46
Magic as she saw the crime Michael and
00:08:48
Michelle were parked on an isolated Road
00:08:51
the killer a man in his late 30s and two
00:08:54
young accomplices crept up on the
00:08:56
unsuspecting lovers
00:09:03
come on out Mikey I need to talk to you
00:09:04
man no I need to talk
00:09:08
coming they seem to be accusing him of
00:09:11
violating some kind of
00:09:13
regulations it almost felt like a cult
00:09:16
type of
00:09:18
situation Nancy said that after the
00:09:20
killer stabbed relle he and his
00:09:23
accomplices drove Michael to the
00:09:24
sportsman's club shut up shut up
00:09:29
feeling of of a Nancy was able to
00:09:32
vividly picture all three
00:09:34
asants and artists sketched her
00:09:36
impressions she believes the killer
00:09:38
might teach at a local college and has
00:09:41
probably killed
00:09:42
before these are nany's impressions of
00:09:45
the two accomplices both in their early
00:09:47
to mid
00:09:49
20s Nancy also saw this dragonwing
00:09:52
Medallion she feels the symbol somehow
00:09:55
links Michael and the killers
00:10:00
the authorities however do not agree
00:10:02
with nany's Theory they remain convinced
00:10:05
that the killer knew relle and was a
00:10:07
friend or
00:10:09
acquaintance meanwhile relle and
00:10:11
Michael's families can only hope that
00:10:13
the mystery will someday be solved it's
00:10:17
a horrible horrible feeling it's almost
00:10:19
like a marry go around and some days you
00:10:21
just want to say let me off I can't take
00:10:23
it and you can't you'll never never get
00:10:28
off of it I know these people whoever
00:10:30
did it they're going to pay either in
00:10:31
this life or the next and I have
00:10:33
complete faith that that's going to take
00:10:35
place authorities believe a key clue in
00:10:38
this case is the cardboard box that
00:10:41
covered Michelle's body originally the
00:10:44
Box held large sheets of professional
00:10:46
printing paper forensics revealed that
00:10:49
the killer brought the box to the scene
00:10:51
after storing it in his home or office
00:10:53
for several
00:10:56
years perhaps someone watching tonight
00:10:58
has seen the Box
00:11:00
before a $166,000 reward has been
00:11:04
offered in this case if you have any

00:11:16
next an entire family seems to attract
00:11:19
bolts of
00:11:21
lightning only a lucky few have lived to
00:11:24
tell their story
00:11:33
it's a force of nature so powerful that
00:11:36
it's been called The Finger of God no
00:11:39
one knows where or when it will strike
00:11:42
but one Illinois family seems to have
00:11:44
been targeted time and time again for
00:11:47
them every thunderstorm means possible
00:11:55
death I think the lightning likes us
00:11:58
once in a while would get a bolt that
00:12:00
strikes you know real real close and uh
00:12:04
start thinking about
00:12:05
it since I've told you know co-workers
00:12:08
and friends this they tend to they tend
00:12:10
to kid me a lot and uh you know nobody
00:12:13
wants to give me a ride home when it's
00:12:14
raining
00:12:15
out I think it'll strike me again and
00:12:18
that someday is going to get me and kill
00:12:23
me 1941 I stayed with her El in the
00:12:26
country meet the Olen family of Elgen
00:12:28
Illinois
00:12:30
was there anybody else early on they um
00:12:33
over the last four generations at least
00:12:36
10 members of the Olsen family have had
00:12:38
close encounters with
00:12:41
lightning two of them have
00:12:44
died the first person that was um killed
00:12:47
by lightning was chryst Olson and he
00:12:49
died in
00:12:54
1899 that day in May of 1899 it was very
00:12:58
very St Army drct Chris is here come in
00:13:02
Chris come in Chris Dolson was just 23
00:13:05
years old that afternoon he visited his
00:13:08
fiance and her father rain I hear you
00:13:12
having trouble on the farm yeah yeah the
00:13:14
north fence
00:13:18
shifted hi
00:13:23
hello
00:13:25
Chris Christ Olsson died instantly
00:13:30
the lightning never touched the others
00:13:33
oh
00:13:34
CHR more than two decades later Chris's
00:13:37
older brother oie went out to feed the
00:13:39
animals during a summer
00:13:43
storm lightning struck him dead at the
00:13:46
barn door it was then that the Olsen
00:13:49
began to wonder if death by lightning
00:13:51
was a fate they all
00:13:54
shared Christine Olsen Chris and oie's
00:13:57
sister lived her life terrified of
00:14:00
lightning I came out for the summer my
00:14:03
summer visit and uh had a day that was
00:14:06
very cloudy outside and it uh was dark
00:14:09
early and so she put me to bed and I was
00:14:12
laying there probably a half hour and
00:14:14
then could hear thunder in the
00:14:16
background and the lightning start bolts
00:14:19
of it coming
00:14:22
down come Billy quickly we've got to go
00:14:26
outside but why well because we we' got
00:14:29
to get away from the lightning we'll go
00:14:30
out to the old car more got out the
00:14:34
bedroom door and his Bat of lightning
00:14:35
hit blew a hole in the
00:14:38
wall across the metal
00:14:41
ceiling and the ceiling lit up like a
00:14:43
neon
00:14:46
sign but I think after that we didn't
00:14:48
stop too long we just tore out the back
00:14:51
door and ran out to the
00:14:54
car bill and his grandmother stayed in
00:14:57
the car for the rest of the night
00:14:59
but Against All Odds this wasn't Bill's
00:15:02
last brush with death by
00:15:06
lightning ball lightning was shot in
00:15:08
through the window hit the toaster blew
00:15:10
the toaster off the table went over
00:15:12
missed the little girl in the he chair
00:15:14
this one buyer his ball hit the phone on
00:15:16
the wall and knocked the phone off the
00:15:18
wall and went out through the phone
00:15:21
area during the summerstorm 5 years
00:15:24
later lightning struck yet again this
00:15:28
time it was Bill's Cousin Connie she was
00:15:31
waiting to be picked up from work by her
00:15:33
sister Karen as is often the case with
00:15:36
lightning the charge actually shot up
00:15:38
from the ground there was a different
00:15:41
kind of feeling about the
00:15:43
atmosphere it felt like it was full of
00:15:46
um electrical charges and it was like an
00:15:49
eerie kind of
00:15:52
feeling
00:15:54
Connie every single joint in my body
00:15:56
violently jerked
00:16:00
Connie I don't remember anything after
00:16:03
that because I was knocked
00:16:05
unconscious Connie's boss helped her to
00:16:08
Karen's
00:16:10
car to everyone's complete surprise
00:16:12
Connie was
00:16:15
unharmed when I came to in the car my
00:16:19
body had a tingling sensation um my arms
00:16:23
in my chest area were
00:16:25
numb when my sister told me that um I
00:16:27
was struck by lightning I was just
00:16:29
really surprised I had absolutely no
00:16:32
idea that that's what happened but then
00:16:35
I thought well that's what lightning
00:16:36
feels
00:16:38
like lightning has always kind of scared
00:16:40
me and I'm sure some of it's due to that
00:16:42
when when that occurrence that happened
00:16:44
when I was
00:16:45
young Bradley hample is a fourth
00:16:48
generation Olen when he was 15 he
00:16:51
visited his grandmother's Farm in
00:16:53
Burlington
00:16:55
Illinois he didn't know anything about
00:16:58
the family's
00:16:59
with
00:17:02
lightning the light was so bright that I
00:17:05
couldn't see for a second finally when
00:17:07
it kind of shook off and I realized what
00:17:09
had happened you know lightning hit
00:17:12
somewhere and there was a probably a
00:17:14
10-in diameter charred circle on the
00:17:16
door that was
00:17:18
[Music]
00:17:19
smoking since that time I have been very
00:17:22
scared of lightning it wasn't
00:17:24
necessarily A life-changing experience I
00:17:26
didn't turn good or anything because of
00:17:28
it but it it was something that uh it
00:17:30
was probably the first time in my life
00:17:31
that realization is wow you could have
00:17:33
just you could have just been
00:17:36
killed do you have being struck by
00:17:38
lightning next to your name no I don't
00:17:40
probably should add that we should put a
00:17:42
little lightning bolt
00:17:44
on what is the link between this family
00:17:48
and
00:17:49
lightning I've never heard of another
00:17:51
family where two family members had been
00:17:54
killed by lightning whether the whole
00:17:56
Olsen family has a genetic predis
00:17:58
disposition to be struck by lightning I
00:18:01
would answer no because from a
00:18:03
scientific point of view the lightning
00:18:04
starts in the cloud has no idea what's
00:18:06
going on in the ground uh just works its
00:18:09
way down randomly and then hits what's
00:18:11
under uh wherever it gets
00:18:14
to I believe that um there's an organic
00:18:18
reason why lightning strikes my family
00:18:24
Connie and I also feel that what you
00:18:27
fear most
00:18:29
is what you attract and many members of
00:18:32
my family fear lightning and therefore
00:18:35
they attract lightning to them everybody
00:18:38
squeeze together so we can get a good
00:18:40
family picture here given their family
00:18:43
history the Olen can't help but wonder
00:18:46
who's next one more let's say lightning
00:18:49
this time for the
00:18:51
[Music]
00:18:55
occasion next a woman leaves a bar with
00:18:58
with a man and disappears he claims he's
00:19:02
innocent the trouble is he's killed
00:19:13
before when we first heard this story
00:19:16
millions of viewers watched our profile
00:19:18
of accused killer Dennis Keith Smith who
00:19:21
knew that one of those viewers was Smith
00:19:26
himself at the age of 22
00:19:29
Dennis Keith Smith brutally murdered his
00:19:32
own
00:19:33
sister he was sentenced to life in
00:19:35
prison but served only 10 years shortly
00:19:39
after his release Smith then became a
00:19:41
suspect and The Disappearance of Carolyn
00:19:44
Kilby of Vancouver
00:19:49
Washington eyewitnesses saw Smith leave
00:19:52
a Vancouver bar with Carolyn she had had
00:19:54
several
00:19:56
drinks and that was the last time she
00:19:58
was seen
00:20:00
[Music]
00:20:02
alive what happened when he was
00:20:04
questioned by police Smith said he had
00:20:06
nothing to do with her disappearance
00:20:08
what's going on like what happened
00:20:10
detectives didn't believe
00:20:13
him especially after they impounded his
00:20:16
pickup truck oh man that's more than a
00:20:18
cigarette Burn yeah it looks like he
00:20:20
took a torch to
00:20:22
it there was a huge hole on his front
00:20:25
seat and the seat cover was gone also
00:20:29
every inch of carpeting had been
00:20:31
stripped off the
00:20:33
floor at that point basically I knew
00:20:36
that Dennis was hiding something from us
00:20:39
maybe any evidence that Carolyn was in
00:20:42
his truck or that something bad happened
00:20:45
to her in the
00:20:47
truck but suspicions alone were not
00:20:50
enough to keep Smith locked
00:20:52
up by the time authorities had enough
00:20:54
evidence to charge him with murder Smith
00:20:57
had already left town

00:21:03
update on the night of our broadcast two
00:21:06
viewers Tracy hodman and John Cummings
00:21:09
had gotten together with a new friend to
00:21:11
watch Unsolved Mysteries the friend said
00:21:14
his name was Dave sandborne he kind of
00:21:17
started getting nervous and I said oh my
00:21:20
gosh Johnny I said look who that looks
00:21:21
like and he was sitting right next to me
00:21:24
and um they started describing the color
00:21:26
of his tattoos that were on his arm
00:21:29
and I said I looked over and I said you
00:21:31
have those color tattoos you know and he
00:21:34
asked me is there anything else on he
00:21:35
didn't want to watch the show and I said
00:21:37
no I like this show I'll watch it and he
00:21:39
you know got up and went in the kitchen
00:21:41
he started pacing
00:21:42
around their new friend Dave sandborn
00:21:46
turned out to be Dennis Keith
00:21:49
Smith Smith asked to borrow their car
00:21:52
but he never returned John and Tracy
00:21:55
called the police
00:21:59
authorities caught up with Smith two
00:22:01
days later at this intersection he did
00:22:04
not give up easily he turned and charged
00:22:08
the officers in a fight ensued during
00:22:10
the course of that fight he attempted to
00:22:13
remove the firearm from one of the
00:22:15
officers the Second Officer fired a
00:22:17
single shot striking Mr Smith in the
00:22:20
neck Smith was also shot in the
00:22:23
wrist after 2 weeks in the hospital he
00:22:26
appeared in a Florida court and was then
00:22:28
and extradited to Washington
00:22:33
State Dennis Keith Smith was charged
00:22:37
with the murder of Carolyn kbby because
00:22:40
police never found Carolyn's body they
00:22:42
turned to a new form of DNA testing they
00:22:46
compared her mother's and daughter's DNA
00:22:49
with blood found in Smith's
00:22:52
truck the samples were indeed related
00:22:56
and it was enough for a conviction
00:22:59
Smith was sentenced to 70 years in
00:23:01
prison for the murder and an additional
00:23:04
99 years for violating Pearl after 6
00:23:08
years behind bars he committed suicide
00:23:11
by hanging himself with a bed sheet
00:23:13
attached to an air vent in his
00:23:21
cell
00:23:23
Carolyn yeah okay we're running a little
00:23:25
late they met while working as nurses at
00:23:28
a psychiatric hospital in Houston
00:23:33
Texas almost immediately the two women
00:23:37
were up to no good eventually the police
00:23:40
would come to know them as thalma and
00:23:45
Louise by day Rose turford was a loving
00:23:49
wife devoted mother and dedicated
00:23:51
professional but by night here we are
00:23:55
got the Y the key the Rim's right here
00:23:58
oh good rose began meeting men through
00:24:01
personal ad and then she would lure her
00:24:05
dates to out of the way motel
00:24:10
rooms a little soft music a good bottle
00:24:13
of wine and it was time for her friend
00:24:15
Carolyn Stevens to

bed the Felman Lou Bandits moved quickly
00:24:25
and methodically now take off your
00:24:27
clothes
00:24:34
I'm going to the bank Carolyn would
00:24:36
stand guard while Rose ran out to use
00:24:39
the victim's credit
00:24:41
[Music]
00:24:46
cards Rose and Carolyn from the onset
00:24:49
wanted to be the real life th Lou that
00:24:52
they wanted to experience that thrill
00:24:55
and the spontaneity and only thing is I
00:24:58
don't believe they ever considered what
00:25:00
they were going to do to their
00:25:04
families in 3 months Rose and Carolyn
00:25:07
robbed at least 10 men of more than a
00:25:10
quar of a million dollar but eventually
00:25:14
their luck ran out Carolyn and Rose were
00:25:17
caught and arrested bail was set at
00:25:21
$250,000
00:25:23
each it seems as though prior to both
00:25:27
Rose and Carol and going to jail and
00:25:29
being arrested they had this pack that
00:25:32
if one got out they both got out look
00:25:35
I'm sorry I have to keep calling you but
00:25:38
Avery is putting pressure on me Carolyn
00:25:41
repeatedly begged Rose's parents to bail
00:25:44
them both out she claimed that a
00:25:46
mysterious private investigator named
00:25:48
Avery was threatening Rose's
00:25:51
children but Rose and I know what he's
00:25:53
capable of and we should all take him
00:25:55
seriously probably the weirdest part
00:25:58
part of this whole scenario was the man
00:26:01
named Avery I never bought that he was
00:26:05
real it was just
00:26:08
too far-fetched
00:26:10
but Rose's Family believed Avery was
00:26:14
real and so did her husband's family
00:26:17
they even put up their house and
00:26:19
restaurant for
00:26:20
bail I tried to convince the parents
00:26:23
don't make both
00:26:25
bonds and um it's not often that you sit
00:26:29
and try to speak to someone about not
00:26:31
giving you
00:26:32
$25,000 but I I just knew it was a
00:26:35
problem and I knew it wasn't going to
00:26:37
work and it
00:26:39
didn't sure enough after posting bail
00:26:43
Rose and Carolyn took off
00:26:46
again this time they left a letter
00:26:49
behind which claimed they had been
00:26:50
kidnapped by the mysterious
00:26:55
Avery in reality the Thelma and Louis
00:26:58
Bandits were on the run and now Rose's
00:27:01
in-laws were in danger of losing their
00:27:03
home and their business we wanted to
00:27:07
help in any way we could I never once
00:27:10
once entered my
00:27:12
mind
00:27:15
that they would disappear
00:27:19
never I really hope that Rose and
00:27:22
Carolyn just stop and think they're
00:27:25
going to basically throw really really
00:27:28
good honest hardworking people out in
00:27:30
the
00:27:30
streets and if they have to go to jail
00:27:34
well that's just kind of the price you
00:27:36
pay for making a mistake but it's a lot
00:27:38
better to pay price once than to pay it
00:27:40
all your
00:27:44
life
00:27:47
update a few months later the Royal
00:27:50
Canadian Mounted Police received a tip
00:27:53
and arrested Carolyn Stevens and Rose
00:27:56
turford both women were extradited to
00:27:59
use them there they were charged with
00:28:02
aggravated robbery and kidnapping Rose
00:28:05
turford was convicted of robbery and
00:28:07
given 30 years she served her time and
00:28:12
has been released Carolyn Stevens was
00:28:15
also convicted of robbery but because of
00:28:17
a plea bargain arrangement she was given
00:28:20
10
00:28:21
years she served nine of those years and
00:28:24
was released
00:28:28

00:28:53
an ordinary weekend at a neighborhood
00:28:55
biker bar what's that
00:28:59
but bartender Gloria Brown would soon
00:29:01
become a key witness in a bizarre
00:29:04
missing person's
00:29:07
[Music]

00:29:12
thanks I'm sorry if you're going to sit
00:29:14
here if you have to order
00:29:16
something I don't have any
00:29:19
money do you want a
00:29:22
soda she seemed very depressed she
00:29:25
didn't smile she didn't hard they
00:29:29
speak and very strange very
00:29:33
strange several days later Gloria saw
00:29:37
this missing person's flyer it was a
00:29:39
girl who looked just like the stranger
00:29:41
she had seen in the
00:29:44
bar her name was Dei Rosenthal and she
00:29:48
had vanished a week
00:29:51
earlier Gloria's encounter was the first
00:29:54
clue that Dee might still be alive
00:29:58
Gloria called the police but they were
00:30:00
never able to track down the young woman
00:30:02
from the bar and since then there have
00:30:04
been conflicting Clues unexplained phone
00:30:07
calls and not one but two possible
00:30:10
sightings of
00:30:14
Dei 32-year-old D Rosenthal was a
00:30:17
well-respected therapist who worked with
00:30:20
autistic
00:30:22
children one of her co-workers reported
00:30:24
her missing one day when she didn't show
00:30:26
up for work police met at DD's
00:30:32
apartment it was immediately clear that
00:30:35
something was wrong the front door was
00:30:38
unlocked the Sunday paper was
00:30:41
untouched inside everything seemed to be
00:30:44
in order there were no signs of
00:30:46
ransacking or a struggle but
00:30:49
investigators soon learned that Dei was
00:30:52
being evicted from her
00:30:56
apartment the missing girl had been
00:30:58
having some financial difficulties
00:31:01
though it gave rise to the belief maybe
00:31:05
uh became overwhelming and she left of
00:31:07
her own
00:31:09
valtion Dei just would not be the person
00:31:12
just to take off if she was going to
00:31:14
take off or was going to go away she
00:31:16
would either call her mom or she would
00:31:19
call
00:31:21
me curiously dei's purse had been left
00:31:24
behind with her keys identification and
00:31:27
credit cards
00:31:30
inside there's a cat out here John and
00:31:33
she had abandoned her cat Dei took her
00:31:37
cat everywhere Where She Went she would
00:31:39
never have let it let alone alone in the
00:31:41
apartment but let it alone sitting out
00:31:43
on a balcony she would not have put it
00:31:45
out the door and say all right goodbye
00:31:47
I'm leaving that that's not that's
00:31:49
totally out of D's
00:31:53
character police found de's car parked
00:31:56
in its usual spot but oddly her
00:31:59
briefcase with all her clients records
00:32:01
had been left in the car if dii were to
00:32:06
take off on her own why wouldn't she
00:32:09
take her
00:32:10
car I knew
00:32:13
something was horribly wrong with this
00:32:19
scenario investigators worried that Dei
00:32:22
had been kidnapped and perhaps murdered
00:32:25
sometime between 10 p.m. Friday and
00:32:28
early Sunday
00:32:29
morning that conclusion was supported by
00:32:32
one of dei's neighbors she said that she
00:32:34
was awakened around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday
00:32:38
by strange sounds coming from Diddy's
00:32:45
apartment she heard what it sounded like
00:32:47
a scream followed by a thud and she
00:32:51
likened it to uh someone falling out of
00:32:54
bed and being startled
00:32:58
5 hours later the same neighbor heard
00:33:00
the balcony door open she just assumed
00:33:04
it was Dei but it could have been her
00:33:09
kidnapper but a week later unexpected
00:33:12
evidence surfaced that Dei was still
00:33:14
alive when the young woman visited the
00:33:17
biker
00:33:19
[Music]

00:33:28
you go she she looked so much like the
00:33:32
picture if she had only smiled I I would
00:33:36
have known definitely but it looked like
00:33:40
her
00:33:42
hi hi you're uh not from around here are
00:33:46
you she said her name was Lori and that
00:33:49
she was trying to get to Florida she
00:33:51
left with one of the bikers he told
00:33:54
police that he dropped her off the next
00:33:56
day at a liquor store near a major
00:33:59
[Music]
00:34:04
highway just one week later de's Aunt
00:34:08
Celia received a mysterious phone call
00:34:11
Mama who is this mama mama Didi I'm okay
00:34:18
didy is that
00:34:20
you sheilia called me she was very
00:34:25
excited uh she told me that she just
00:34:28
received a phone call from someone that
00:34:31
she swore was my sister
00:34:35
Dei 5 weeks went by with no more news
00:34:39
then dei's brother received the tip that
00:34:41
his sister was in
00:34:43
Florida they said we've seen Dei in the
00:34:46
Fort Lauderdale
00:34:48
area as I started talking the phone
00:34:55
disconnected a year passed and the woman
00:34:58
who called herself Lori returns to the
00:35:00
biker
00:35:02
bark she had dyed her hair blonde and
00:35:05
claim to have been in
00:35:08
Florida my impression was that she had
00:35:10
had a nervous
00:35:12
breakdown excuse me is your name
00:35:15
deei no it's
00:35:17
La well if you are deei you better get
00:35:20
in touch with your mother she's pretty
00:35:23
upset she just turned away from me
00:35:26
because she didn't want want to have
00:35:29
anything to do with what I was saying
00:35:32
because I
00:35:33
knew and she knew that I
00:35:38
knew a customer from the biker bar
00:35:40
dropped her off at a nearby Tavern it
00:35:43
was the last time the woman known as
00:35:45
Lori was ever seen once again she
00:35:48
disappeared before she could be
00:35:50
interviewed by authorities many people
00:35:53
including the police are skeptical that
00:35:55
Dei and Lori are the same
00:36:02
person
00:36:05
update almost 5 years after Dei
00:36:08
Rosenthal disappeared Charles reddish
00:36:11
the maintenance man in her apartment
00:36:12
complex confessed to killing her he said
00:36:16
he entered de's apartment and smothered
00:36:19
her he returned 2 Days Later picked up
00:36:22
her body and dumped it in a field of
00:36:25
weeds her remains were never
00:36:28
found reddish admitted killing DD after
00:36:32
police charged them with killing his
00:36:34
former girlfriend and raping her
00:36:37
14-year-old daughter reddish is now
00:36:39
serving two life sentences plus 60 years
00:36:43

00:38:19
routine check of the cell block all the
00:38:22
inmates were behind bars except one low
00:38:25
security prisoner who was working in a
00:38:27

00:38:29

TR and somebody's I didn't know what
00:38:51
they were going to do and I saw the
00:38:53
bathroom door was standing a jar so I
00:38:56
just darted out out and
00:38:59
ran at first I felt a relief that I was
00:39:02
at least for the moment
00:39:04
safe but then I was thinking but my God
00:39:07
you know what are you going to do here
00:39:09
and they have K what are they going to
00:39:11
do to
00:39:12
her it appeared that Kay had been taken
00:39:15
hostage by James Barnes kar's
00:39:19
cellmate that a it which one I heard the
00:39:22
buttons click and the controls and so I
00:39:26
I thought well they're
00:39:31
gone a couple of days later Kay called
00:39:34
her daughter
00:39:35
Lesley it was about4 after 5: in the
00:39:39
morning and she called
00:39:40
collect and she told me she was all
00:39:42
right and that she loved me and she
00:39:44
missed me and not to worry about her
00:39:47
that she was all
00:39:49
right and she said she told me she goes
00:39:52
I went with
00:39:54
them 3 days after the Breakout Barnes
00:39:58
was captured he served his time and was
00:40:01
released he told authorities that Kay's
00:40:03
car was used in the getaway he said that
00:40:06
she helped plan the Escape because Kay
00:40:09
was in love with Edgar
00:40:13
Kars Edgar Kars had been convicted of a
00:40:16
theft and forgery in West Virginia he
00:40:18
was awaiting sentencing in Maryland for
00:40:20
passing bad
00:40:23
checks Barnes said that Kay and Kars had
00:40:26
been Roman atically involved for 3
00:40:30
months I haven't complained have I Mr
00:40:33
bnes told us that she would spend
00:40:35
sometimes a half an hour 40 minutes in
00:40:38
the maximum security area just talking
00:40:40
to Curr so there definitely was a
00:40:42
relationship there sleeping as usual I
00:40:46
guess you maybe fall in love with
00:40:48
somebody and you do some strange things
00:40:51
but uh Kay's pretty well lost about
00:40:54
everything that she ever had over this
00:40:56
one incident
00:40:58
once there was almost a certainty in my
00:41:01
mind of what had happened I felt so
00:41:04
betrayed I
00:41:06
felt I just couldn't believe she could
00:41:09
do
00:41:10
that I want to know why she did it and I
00:41:14
like to have her home so she can explain
00:41:17
it to
00:41:19
me and um it just hurts a lot
