March 09, 2017 / 42:52

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the disappearance of college student Kristen Modery, the murder of June Maloney, and the mysterious life of Walter Green.

Kristen Modery, an 18-year-old honors student from North Carolina, vanished in San Francisco after her shift at a coffee shop. Authorities found clues, including a blonde woman seen with her, but no leads materialized. Her parents fought for answers, suspecting foul play.

June Maloney suffered a brutal attack by her estranged husband, Joe Maloney, who was later arrested for her murder. After escaping from a mental hospital, he evaded capture for years until his fingerprints matched in Ireland, but he was released due to legal technicalities.

Walter Green, known as Curley, lived a frugal life and amassed over $200,000 without any known heirs. His mysterious past includes a childhood in Montana and a love for a woman named Jessemine, who married another man. Investigators are still searching for any relatives who may claim his estate.

Each case highlights the complexities of unresolved mysteries, leaving families searching for closure.

Rochester New York J will you come back
00:01:48
here I have to go to work with have this
00:01:50
conversation after 5 years of emotional
00:01:52
and physical abuse 27-year-old June
00:01:55
Maloney was done she finally walked out
00:01:58
on her husband Joseph of course what
00:02:00
about the kids Joe and June agreed on an
00:02:03
informal separation June would take
00:02:05
custody of their two young children Joe
00:02:08
was allowed to visit whenever he wanted
00:02:11
June confided in me that Joe had roughed
00:02:13
her up a couple of times he didn't hit
00:02:15
her she wasn't bruised but he wasn't
00:02:17
above jumping around hollering and
00:02:20
yelling and looking very dangerous and
00:02:21
perhaps grabbing hold of you and shaking
00:02:24
you Neil suppose I wanted to kill a dog
00:02:28
what kind of poison could I use that
00:02:29
could several weeks after June moved out
00:02:32
Joe paid Neil dunberg a visit Neil
00:02:35
experimented with chemistry as a hobby
00:02:38
and had a lab in the basement of his
00:02:39
mother's home trouble is they're very
00:02:41
difficult to calibrate he told me that
00:02:44
there was a dog who was continuously
00:02:46
tipping over his garbage cans and giving
00:02:48
him fits and he would like to poison the
00:02:50
dog but he was a little shaky about
00:02:52
doing this because it belonged to a
00:02:55
policeman that lived in his
00:02:57
neighborhood Joe showed interest in one
00:03:00
particular chemical a clear liquid which
00:03:03
is odorless tasteless and
00:03:06
lethal immediately afterward I would
00:03:09
started thinking why did he want to know
00:03:11
that and I I got cautious I went up and
00:03:15
I double locked the side door that led
00:03:17
into my
00:03:18
laboratory and I informed the members of
00:03:21
my family that no one was to go into my
00:03:23
lab to keep everybody out and especially
00:03:26
to keep Joe out I don't know Joe I hope
00:03:29
this is okay fortunately it didn't work
00:03:31
my younger sister was at home a week two
00:03:34
weeks later perhaps and Joe showed up at
00:03:37
the house and sweet talked her into
00:03:41
letting him into my laboratory because
00:03:43
he had to sterilize some instruments to
00:03:45
clean up some instruments
00:03:48
here two weeks later June arrived at
00:03:51
Joe's house for their son's fifth
00:03:53
birthday party he offered her a drink
00:03:56
and she stayed for about 2 hours
00:03:59
here you are oh thank you during the
00:04:03
time that she was at Joe's for the party
00:04:05
she had called up and she was kind of
00:04:09
like wound up different than when she
00:04:12
left and I had asked her how many drinks
00:04:16
did you have and she says Wanda I only
00:04:18
had two so she went to her apartment and
00:04:21
a a while later I went over to check on
00:04:23
her and I asked her she wanted me to
00:04:25
stay with her she said no she said she
00:04:28
that was not necessary you know she was
00:04:31
didn't feel quite well and she was going
00:04:33
to go to bed food
00:04:35
poisoning the next morning Wanda was
00:04:38
surprised to find Joe and a doctor in
00:04:40
the hall outside of jun's
00:04:43
apartment is everything all right here
00:04:46
uh June isn't feeling too well so I
00:04:48
called the doctor over she's going to be
00:04:49
fine I think I'll go check on her when I
00:04:52
went in to check on June hi June she was
00:04:56
there and we were in the bedroom talking
00:04:59
and and she didn't want me to leave her
00:05:01
alone with Joe she wanted me to stay
00:05:03
with her that was quite definite she
00:05:05
wanted me to stay with her so I did so
00:05:08
what did the doctor say he said he
00:05:12
thought it was food poisoning but I
00:05:14
think it's something
00:05:17
else all of sudden she stabed and it was
00:05:20
like a um almost a I would almost have
00:05:25
to say a fear look in her eyes and I
00:05:27
looked over and Joe was standing in the
00:05:33
doorway the next day June lapsed into a
00:05:36
coma and was immediately
00:05:39
hospitalized despite a series of tests
00:05:42
doctors found no cause for her rapid
00:05:44
decline you don't think she's going to
00:05:46
make it Joe Maloney seemed unconcerned
00:05:48
about his wife's condition he suggested
00:05:51
that she might have tried to commit
00:05:52
suicide over their
00:05:55
separation I didn't think she would
00:05:56
commit suicide but I was afraid that
00:05:59
some how they would make it look like
00:06:02
that June never regained Consciousness
00:06:06
her autopsy revealed that she had
00:06:08
ingested a lethal dose of the same type
00:06:10
of chemical that Joe had taken from
00:06:13
Neil's
00:06:15
lab 4 hours after his wife's death Joe
00:06:19
Maloney was arrested and charged with
00:06:21
first-degree
00:06:23
murder Maloney asked to be committed to
00:06:26
the Rochester state mental hospital for
00:06:28
psychiatric evaluation the court granted
00:06:32
his
00:06:35
request what the judge didn't know was
00:06:37
that Maloney had once worked at the
00:06:39
hospital and was familiar with the
00:06:42
[Music]
00:06:44
layout less than 2 weeks after being
00:06:47
admitted Joe Maloney escaped and
00:06:51
disappeared 5 years later and more than
00:06:54
3,000 M away in Dublin Ireland
00:06:57
authorities were called to investigate a
00:06:59
burglary at the home of Mr Michael
00:07:04
OA the police apparently already knew uh
00:07:07
Michael OA he didn't have any criminal
00:07:10
record in Ireland there was no
00:07:11
allegation of of criminal wrongdoing on
00:07:13
his part they were looking for the
00:07:15
burglar's prince all the people who were
00:07:17
in the house obviously weren't the
00:07:18
burglar um so they wanted to be able to
00:07:21
eliminate uh those Prince from the
00:07:23
prince taken you mind if we checked the
00:07:26
mantle piece and the desk for
00:07:27
fingerprint he allowed him to take a
00:07:29
fingerprints well this detective went
00:07:33
right into his office and sent it into
00:07:36
interpool and he had a hit Michael
00:07:39
O'Shea's fingerprints matched Joseph
00:07:43
Malone's Joseph Maloney could not be
00:07:46
arrested because Ireland and the United
00:07:48
States had no extradition agreement but
00:07:51
after 13 years that law was changed
00:07:54
Maloney was finally taken into custody
00:07:56
but he was still denying his true
00:08:02
identity while in jail the suspect
00:08:04
refused to cooperate with the
00:08:06
authorities and did not allow himself to
00:08:08
be
00:08:10
photographed 2 years after his arrest
00:08:13
the Irish American extradition treaty
00:08:15
was voided because of illegal
00:08:18
technicality Maloney walked out of
00:08:20
prison and disappeared perhaps
00:08:26
forever Joseph Maloney was born in 1934
00:08:29
5 this is a sketch of what he might look
00:08:32
like today he is 6' 2 in tall with a
00:08:35
slender build Maloney has reddish
00:08:38
colored hair and blue eyes with a scar
00:08:40
over the right eyebrow authorities
00:08:42
believe he may have fled to

Canada if you have any information

00:09:17
abduction 18-year-old Kristen modery was
00:09:21
a college honors student from North
00:09:23
Carolina spending the summer in San
00:09:25
Francisco
00:09:29
on Monday June 23rd she arrived for work
00:09:32
at the crocker Galleria Mall she had
00:09:35
taken a job at a coffee shop to pay for
00:09:37
a photography course at UC
00:09:40
Berkeley hey how's it going good morning
00:09:42
how are you she wanted to come to the
00:09:45
big city and find some
00:09:47
excitement but it seemed to be coupled
00:09:51
with
00:09:53
a a na or not a real understanding of
00:09:59
how the big city
00:10:02
works at the end of her shift Kristen
00:10:05
left the coffee shop then disappeared
00:10:08
Without a
00:10:10
Trace from the start authorities were
00:10:13
frustrated by intriguing clues that went
00:10:15
nowhere in a trail that led directly
00:10:17
into the ocean the mystery was a
00:10:20
nightmare not only for police but also
00:10:23
for her parents got to the hotel yeah
00:10:26
we're here the day after Kristen
00:10:28
vanished her her parents flew
00:10:30
immediately to San
00:10:32
Francisco when we found out that she had
00:10:35
disappeared we were just
00:10:37
shocked we couldn't eat we we barely
00:10:40
spoke uh we just
00:10:43
were just even having trouble
00:10:46
breathing when you uh are faced with a
00:10:50
situation like this you really don't
00:10:53
know how strong you can be you can
00:10:57
either crawl in a hole and die and give
00:10:59
up or you can fight there was no choice
00:11:03
for us we were going to fight for our
00:11:05
daughter as in many missing persons
00:11:08
cases police had few leads to work
00:11:11
with you don't have a crime scene you
00:11:15
have no Witnesses you can't even
00:11:17
establish that a crime has occurred and
00:11:20
you just kind of build on little pieces
00:11:23
of information hunches whatever you can
00:11:26
come up with and see if you can uh put
00:11:29
the puzzle
00:11:31
together one of the first pieces of the
00:11:33
puzzle was identifying a blonde woman
00:11:35
seen with Kristen the day she
00:11:37
disappeared 45 minutes after Kristen's
00:11:40
shift ended a man who worked with her
00:11:42
noticed them at the mall together she
00:11:45
thought that was kind of strange because
00:11:46
she never really stuck around after work
00:11:49
as soon as she checked out she was gone
00:11:52
they were hanging out together talking
00:11:54
together definitely with each other so
00:11:57
we've made a lot of effort to try try to
00:11:59
get the blonde woman to come forward
00:12:02
identify herself and we appealed a
00:12:04
number of times through the media but
00:12:07
never got a
00:12:09
response police used a blood hound to
00:12:11
try to retrace Kristen's route the day
00:12:14
she
00:12:15
vanished when we were downtown I could
00:12:17
tell he was on a trail he knew exactly
00:12:20
where he was going every turn was
00:12:21
perfect but police weren't sure if this
00:12:24
was a route Kristen took the day that
00:12:26
she disappeared or some other day he
00:12:29
then led us up to gir Street heading out
00:12:32
towards Len
00:12:34
Beach Kristen's co-workers said that on
00:12:37
the day she vanished she talked about
00:12:39
visiting L end
00:12:42
Beach we then got down to the beach area
00:12:45
and came to a point where the trail
00:12:47
seemed to have
00:12:50
stopped that's a very treacherous part
00:12:53
of the San Francisco water line numerous
00:12:56
people each year are washing off the
00:12:59
rocks and uh are never seen again so
00:13:03
that was a distinct possibility that she
00:13:05
had in fact uh fallen into the ocean we
00:13:09
really don't believe that's what
00:13:10
happened to
00:13:12
Kristen it's a very tourist oriented
00:13:15
area there's always people around if she
00:13:18
had fallen into the water uh somebody
00:13:21
would have seen something if Kristen
00:13:24
didn't drown then what happened to
00:13:27
her maybe she
00:13:30
17 days after Kristen vanished a man
00:13:33
called a local news station he said
00:13:36
Kristen had been murdered how do you
00:13:38
know these two women he went into a very
00:13:41
long description of who he said killed
00:13:43
her and he told me that there were two
00:13:46
women and he named them and he said that
00:13:49
Kristen had been killed as a result of a
00:13:51
lesbian love affair that went
00:13:53
wrong detectives tracked down to two
00:13:56
women named by the CER but determined
00:13:58
that they didn't know Kristen and had
00:14:00
nothing to do with her
00:14:03
disappearance we then asked these people
00:14:06
who has a grudge against you who would
00:14:09
want to see you go through
00:14:12
this both women named the same person a
00:14:15
man will call
00:14:17
Ryan all right so I made the phone call
00:14:20
so what Ryan told police the two women
00:14:23
were his girlfriend's employers he
00:14:26
claimed that they were harassing her at
00:14:27
work to get back back at them he said
00:14:30
that he phoned in the false tip but the
00:14:33
police suspected that there was more to
00:14:35
Ryan's
00:14:36
story they investigated his background
00:14:38
and found allegations that he had Abused
00:14:41
Women in the past the next step was to
00:14:44
see if he had any connection to Kristen
00:14:47
police say that Ryan met women mostly
00:14:50
through personal ads there it is right
00:14:52
here I bet you this one's it check it
00:14:54
out earlier they had found an ad in
00:14:56
Kristen's apartment they think she might
00:14:59
have placed if you read it sounds like
00:15:02
it could be Kristen it's it's all the
00:15:04
kind of things she was interested in
00:15:06
photography walking the city music art
00:15:10
it was all the kind of things that uh
00:15:12
Kristen was there to
00:15:15
do another clue was found at the home of
00:15:18
Ryan's girlfriend her diary was missing
00:15:21
several Pages Pages covering the same
00:15:24
time period Kristen had been in San
00:15:27
Francisco she told police Ryan had torn
00:15:30
out the pages we asked her why is this
00:15:34
the way it is and she'd said that some
00:15:38
of the stuff that was in there could
00:15:41
come back to hurt him still police say
00:15:44
they have no clear evidence that Ryan
00:15:46
was involved in Kristen's disappearance
00:15:50
Ryan says that he passed a polygraph
00:15:52
test given by a reputable expert he
00:15:56
agreed to be interviewed on the
00:15:57
condition that we would not show his
00:15:59
face and that we change his voice I
00:16:03
never met Kiren I never saw her there's
00:16:06
absolutely no connection to Kristen and
00:16:08
I in any way and what I did was wrong I
00:16:12
wish I never made that
00:16:14
call police have completely cleared Ryan
00:16:18
as a Suspect with no new leads the case
00:16:21
is now back at square one for Kristen's
00:16:24
parents the search for answers
00:16:27
continues we owe this to her we owe this
00:16:30
to ourselves and we owe this to her
00:16:33
sisters someone stole Kristen's dreams
00:16:37
and uh that's not
00:16:40
fair Kristen Mora fery is 5' 8 in tall
00:16:44
and weighs 140 lb she has brown hair and
00:16:48
brown eyes there is a $50,000 reward
00:16:51
being offered in this
00:16:54

with an unusual weapon a heavy Bo 6 and
00:18:29
1/2 ft long police believe the asants
00:18:32
were local teenagers and Jenny's parents
00:18:35
hope that someone will finally find the
00:18:37
courage to step forward and identify her
00:18:43
attackers on the night of the attack
00:18:45
Jenny's parents received a call that
00:18:47
their daughter had been airlifted to a
00:18:49
nearby
00:18:50
hospital they said your daughter's been
00:18:52
in an accident I said is she okay they
00:18:55
wouldn't tell me anything and they said
00:18:56
you know you'll have to come down
00:19:00
scrips Medical Center in La HOA
00:19:02
California takes only the most severe
00:19:05
cases can we see
00:19:07
here Jenny's parents were given the
00:19:10
worst possible news your daughter is
00:19:12
brain
00:19:14
dead and we don't expect her to live but
00:19:17
to the blow from the board that struck
00:19:20
her was great enough to actually crush
00:19:22
the skull and that caused an immediate
00:19:25
shutdown of her
00:19:26
brain and then they said I I could see
00:19:29
her and what I saw was
00:19:32
horrible her hair was red from all the
00:19:35
blood she was bleeding out of her nose
00:19:38
her ears and mouth she had tubes all
00:19:40
over
00:19:41
her and it was like her whole body was
00:19:44
just
00:19:46
distorted Jenny survived but she lapsed
00:19:48
into a deep
00:19:51
coma our first uh involvement in the
00:19:54
case was to examine the evidence that
00:19:56
was found at the crime scene which
00:19:57
consisted of the 2x4 that was used to to
00:20:01
hit Jenny and Curtis So We examined that
00:20:03
for physical evidence and didn't find
00:20:05
any fingerprints there were some blood
00:20:07
stains on it which uh were determined to
00:20:09
be Jenny's Curtis was interviewed that
00:20:11
same day at the Carl bed police station
00:20:14
his account of what happened basically
00:20:16
is that he was giving Jennifer a ride
00:20:18
home they were driving down Rancho Santa
00:20:21
Fe Road getting to ready to make a left
00:20:23
turn it's just like going just
00:20:26
approaching the intersection going real
00:20:27
pretty slow all of a sudden something
00:20:29
struck me and I was go ow what was that
00:20:31
it's like just kind of hurt really bad
00:20:34
and then the car the car went zooming by
00:20:36
and I went I turn around tell Jenny go
00:20:38
someone threw something at me or
00:20:39
something you know I don't know what
00:20:40
happened something hit me I'm you know I
00:20:42
couldn't believe it hurt and she was out
00:20:44
of it and so I just go oh my God what's
00:20:46
happening we believed it was a case
00:20:49
where a carload or a truckload of
00:20:50
juveniles had committed this crime
00:20:53
Curtis was giving Jennifer a ride home
00:20:56
they had almost come to a complete stop
00:20:58
when and he realized that he had been
00:21:00
struck by a board and realized that
00:21:02
Jenny had been struck by a board and had
00:21:04
slumped against him at the same time as
00:21:06
a white pickup truck went by them at a
00:21:08
high rate of speed he had the impression
00:21:11
that there was a large group of
00:21:12
juveniles in the back of the pickup
00:21:14
truck that they were laughing as they
00:21:16
went by and his impression was that the
00:21:18
board came flying from the pickup truck
00:21:20
quite frankly we expected it to be a
00:21:22
crime that would have been solved just
00:21:24
by the nature of juveniles have a
00:21:26
tendency to talk but to this date we
00:21:30
have yet to have anybody come up and
00:21:32
Supply us with any direct knowledge of
00:21:34
what happened that
00:21:36
night I understand you were a friend of
00:21:38
Jennifer prep Jenny's parents hired a
00:21:40
private investigator who interviewed
00:21:42
students at Jenny's High
00:21:44
School basically all I can tell you is
00:21:47
at that night that happened it was not
00:21:49
aimed for Denny it was aimed for Curtis
00:21:51
nobody know really knows who did it I
00:21:53
have a feeling I know who did it but no
00:21:55
one's really willing to say there's no
00:21:57
doubt that there were people because of
00:21:59
Curtis's background that didn't like him
00:22:02
he was not a popular
00:22:04
person two years before the attack
00:22:07
Curtis had been convicted of dealing
00:22:09
Cocaine by cooperating with the police
00:22:12
he served less than half of his SS he
00:22:16
developed a reputation as a snitch when
00:22:18
he got himself in
00:22:20
trouble and young people particularly
00:22:23
young people involved in drugs tend to
00:22:25
look down on somebody Who develops that
00:22:27
reputation
00:22:29
police investigated several people who
00:22:32
might have had a grudge against Curtis
00:22:35
hey get out here they learned that he
00:22:37
had confronted one of his enemies on the
00:22:40
night before stop my apartment the other
00:22:42
night IED from your apartment yeah he
00:22:44
did he know exactly what I'm talking
00:22:45
about too Jenny's parents believe that
00:22:48
that boy might have attacked Curtis and
00:22:50
Jenny because of the argument to get you
00:22:53
good according to Curtis the white
00:22:56
pickup truck was traveling too fast for
00:22:58
him to see the attackers he said it went
00:23:01
by at about 55 M an
00:23:06
hour private investigator Louie chafi
00:23:09
didn't believe Curtis chafi
00:23:12
reconstructed the incident at two
00:23:15
different speeds and we use the
00:23:17
identical pickups as far as the model
00:23:19
year and the size and the same type of
00:23:22
motorcycle and we use the same
00:23:23
conditions the first reconstruction was
00:23:26
done at 50 mph
00:23:31
at that speed it seems almost certain
00:23:34
that both Curtis and Jenny would been
00:23:36
killed they were traveling exactly at 50
00:23:38
there is no way it could have happened
00:23:40
the way he says in this reconstruction
00:23:43
the board fell about 50 ft from the
00:23:45
scene of the crime but after the
00:23:47
accident police found the board only a
00:23:49
few feet from the spot where Jenny was
00:23:53
attacked the second reconstruction
00:23:55
played out at only 10 mph it inflicted
00:23:59
injuries very similar to the ones that
00:24:01
Curtis and Jenny actually received
00:24:04
exactly what happened and this time the
00:24:07
board fell right next to the
00:24:09
motorcycle we had reason to believe that
00:24:12
Curtis was not telling the whole truth
00:24:14
we went back to Curtis's apartment and
00:24:16
visited with him chafi felt that Curtis
00:24:19
did see the people in the pickup track
00:24:21
chafi pressed them for more information
00:24:24
were you in a fight that evening in the
00:24:25
restaurant finally Curtis named names
00:24:28
one of them was the same boy that he had
00:24:30
fought with on the night before the
00:24:33
[Music]
00:24:37
attack they like forced me to tell they
00:24:40
like it's like threatening someone you
00:24:42
know and they like scared me into saying
00:24:44
that and that wasn't right what those
00:24:46
statements were later on Curtis recanted
00:24:49
telling police that he had given them
00:24:51
the names because he felt pressured the
00:24:54
truck went by really fast you know
00:24:55
people try to say oh maybe saw someone
00:24:57
but I really did and we've done lion
00:25:00
detector tests on me I've passed
00:25:01
everything you know I've told the truth
00:25:03
I've always been there to help I've
00:25:05
never you know not came around I've
00:25:07
always came to everything he's wanted me
00:25:08
to do and cooperated with everything we
00:25:11
do believe that Curtis didn't in fact
00:25:12
see those people Curtis continuously
00:25:14
told us that he has been threatened that
00:25:18
uh he has uh basically informed on
00:25:21
people before and was very very
00:25:23
frightened that he would be killed and
00:25:26
he was already being threatened not to
00:25:28
talk in this case and we have reason to
00:25:30
believe that what he's saying to that
00:25:33
effect is
00:25:34
true hi Jen mommy how you doing 3 months
00:25:39
after the attack Jenny Pratt came out of
00:25:41
her coma At first she seemed incapable
00:25:44
of thought or action but after 12 weeks
00:25:48
she started physical
00:25:50
therapy 7 months later Jenny began to
00:25:53
speak a year later she walked
00:25:58
why was somebody mad at me what did I do
00:26:02
to them to hurt
00:26:04
them we need somebody in the community
00:26:07
with half the courage of Jennifer Pratt
00:26:10
somebody who just knows the one missing
00:26:12
link the one thing that'll tie this
00:26:14
whole case together because I really
00:26:16
think that's all we're missing is a one
00:26:18
small link and someone out there has
00:26:22
it if you have any information about

next a boy separated from his foster
00:26:36
mother is reunited with her after 30
00:26:39
years and a man dreams that his mother
00:26:42
is in a life or death struggle with a
00:26:44
prison inmate and then the struggle
00:26:47
really
00:26:55
happens May 7th 1964 for Queens New York
00:27:00
Jean and Don Warren greet the newest
00:27:03
member of their family a 2-year-old
00:27:06
foster child named Roger Lindsley hello
00:27:09
Roger hello hello Roger I fell in love
00:27:13
with him
00:27:15
immediately there was something about
00:27:17
him that Drew me to him and I said to
00:27:21
myself this is going to be my
00:27:24
son I think adjusting in our family was
00:27:28
best thing for Roger whatever we did he
00:27:32
was there with us and each day I was
00:27:36
loving this child more and more and
00:27:38
more 3 years after Roger arrived Jean
00:27:42
and her husband had to move to Ohio they
00:27:45
were heartbroken to learn that they
00:27:46
could not take Roger with
00:27:48
[Music]
00:27:52
them when she took him to the car he
00:27:55
looked at us and looked at me and I
00:27:57
remember putting out his
00:27:59
hand and crying I don't want to go I
00:28:03
don't want to go you be a good boy Roger
00:28:06
I could only say Roger be good take care
00:28:09
of yourself and I love you and I'll
00:28:12
always remember
00:28:15
you Jee Warren always remembered Roger
00:28:18
and never gave up hope that she would
00:28:20
see him
00:28:23
again
00:28:25
update on the night of our broadcast we
00:28:28
received a call from a very excited
00:28:31
Roger Lindley and then another surprise
00:28:34
we heard from a man named James Lindsley
00:28:37
who turned out to be Roger's long lost
00:28:41
brother 30 years after they were
00:28:44
separated Roger finally came home to the
00:28:47
woman he still calls
00:28:49
Mom
00:28:51
hi oh you are handsome how are you fine
00:28:58
I was
00:28:59
ecstatic so
00:29:01
beautiful my heart started
00:29:04
pounding I would like him and his wife
00:29:07
to be a part of our family and uh it's
00:29:11
so nice to hear him call me Mom that
00:29:14
makes it all
00:29:16
worthwhile vendy I'm fine I feel so much
00:29:20
love for that woman Carol she has
00:29:22
changed my life
00:29:25
old I got a family overnight overnight I
00:29:30
got a family and uh I'm a I'm a happy
00:29:34
man these are the pictures of your life
00:29:38
of the three years that you spent with
00:29:40
us three beautiful next Roger's brother
00:29:43
James arrived they were separated as
00:29:46
infants and hadn't seen each other in
00:29:48
nearly three decades hey hey R how
00:29:52
[Music]
00:29:54
you where you been
00:29:56
huh that's unbelievable
00:29:59
there's no feeling in the world you
00:30:01
could imagine is not to have a family
00:30:04
and then 30 years later in your life you
00:30:06
see somebody that's like you is
00:30:08
[Music]
00:30:10
Indescribable I'm overwhelmed I really
00:30:13
am I found my forer mother I found my
00:30:18
brother I I couldn't see leave in this
00:30:20
world without knowing where I came from
00:30:23
and now I know
00:30:30
when a man named Thomas Wright awoke
00:30:32
from a disturbing dream two questions
00:30:35
weighed on his mind do Nightmares come
00:30:38
true can prayer be answered Thomas would
00:30:42
soon learn that in his case the
00:30:44
surprising answer to both questions was
00:30:53
yes I can see my mother's squad
00:30:56
car there was a
00:30:59
struggle I saw the person take my
00:31:03
mother's
00:31:04
gun was a
00:31:07
[Music]
00:31:08
woman I remember the
00:31:11
gun moving back and forth it looked like
00:31:14
my mother really wasn't winning the
00:31:18
struggle she needed
00:31:25
help and that was the most disturbing
00:31:28
thing about the whole dream was the fact
00:31:30
that I didn't know who was
00:31:33
shot and
00:31:35
why the only thing I could think of at
00:31:37
that point was
00:31:39
that there was a possibility that my
00:31:41
mother might have been taken away from
00:31:44
me on a September night Thomas Wright
00:31:48
had a nightmare about his mother who
00:31:49
worked as a deputy sheriff it was so
00:31:52
troubling that he sat in bed and prayed
00:31:55
for
00:31:56
her the bond Thomas shared with his
00:31:59
mother had always been especially strong
00:32:03
a lot of different things have just
00:32:04
really brought us close to where we're
00:32:08
just best friends really and we can feel
00:32:12
each other's hurts
00:32:14
anytime and I didn't know until later
00:32:16
why I had the
00:32:19
dream the day after Thomas's nightmare
00:32:23
his mother was transferring a prisoner
00:32:25
to a facility 2 hours away way the
00:32:29
inmate was serving a one-year sentence
00:32:30
for writing bad
00:32:32
checks as they traveled near Leonia
00:32:35
Missouri events took place just as they
00:32:38
had in the nightmare as the car was
00:32:42
driving on the highway I could see my
00:32:44
mother talking to the woman who was in
00:32:46
in
00:32:47
back it was almost as if I was sitting
00:32:50
in the front seat but I really wasn't
00:32:52
there at 600 p.m. the squad car stopped
00:32:58
oh what are you doing the convict had
00:33:01
small hands which she managed to slip
00:33:03
out of the
00:33:08
[Music]
00:33:15
handcuffs Doris had to fight for her gun
00:33:18
and her
00:33:21
life and I could
00:33:23
see my mother's
00:33:26
expression it was almost as if
00:33:29
the the life had just gone from her
00:33:33
face she needed
00:33:36
help constrained by her seat belt Doris
00:33:39
was
00:33:41
losing and that's when the events began
00:33:44
to differ from Thomas's Dream Out of
00:33:47
Nowhere two men suddenly
00:33:50
[Music]
00:33:52
appeared they managed to distract
00:33:55
Doris's attacker she let go of her whole
00:33:58
on the
00:34:01
gun was it just coincidence that the
00:34:04
Good Samaritans came by or was some
00:34:07
mysterious Force at
00:34:10
work if I wouldn't afraid what would
00:34:12
have been the outcome of the
00:34:14
events with those two men would they
00:34:17
have been there to help
00:34:20
her I really think they're really
00:34:22
responsible for saving my mother's
00:34:26
life by the time Doris regained her
00:34:28
composure the two men had driven off she
00:34:32
never had a chance to thank them for
00:34:34
their help I was absolutely convinced
00:34:37
that I would die that day I looked for
00:34:40
the men that were there I wanted to talk
00:34:42
to them wanted to get their names wanted
00:34:43
to thank them for what they had done for
00:34:46
me I want them to know because of their
00:34:50
courage and their willingness to help
00:34:53
another person I'm still here today
00:34:58
Thomas and his mother would like to
00:34:59
thank the people who came to Doris's
00:35:01
rescue but there are few Clues a person
00:35:05
who stopped at the scene took this photo
00:35:07
of the men's vehicle a dark blue Chevy
00:35:10
CK pickup truck with tinted windows and
00:35:13
an extended cab it was towing a blue and
00:35:16
white
00:35:17
boat the two men were driving near
00:35:20
Leonia in Northeast Missouri when they
00:35:22
jumped out of their truck to help it was
00:35:25
on Highway 19 about 50 m from Mark Twain

Walter green nicknamed Curley lived a
00:36:06
quiet Frugal life alone in a small
00:36:08
apartment near
00:36:09
downtown how you
00:36:12
doing he was friendly to his neighbors
00:36:15
but kept mostly to
00:36:18
himself one spring day Curley had a
00:36:21
heart attack and died while working in
00:36:23
his
00:36:25
yard everyone who knew Curley was
00:36:27

00:36:29
an inheritance of more than
00:36:32
$200,000 worth over half a million
00:36:34
dollar today but Curley didn't leave
00:36:37
will and his relatives could not be

shocked I can't imagine how he amassed
00:36:53
that amount they found stock
00:36:54
certificates I understand they found a
00:36:56
coin collection
00:36:58
and they found much to everyone's
00:36:59
surprise that Curley actually owned the
00:37:01
apartment building where he was
00:37:02
living it is extraordinary that a man
00:37:05
who lived as simply as curly green could
00:37:07
have accured such a large sum of money
00:37:10
it is even more extraordinary that the
00:37:13
money
00:37:14
remains
00:37:16
[Music]
00:37:18
unclaimed much of Curley's early life is
00:37:20
a mystery but we do know that when he
00:37:23
was only 16 he hopped the train heading
00:37:26
for Omaha
00:37:28
[Music]
00:37:29
Curley jumped off outside the city near
00:37:32
a small farming town named
00:37:35
Skyler he began looking for work Al
00:37:39
ringer a Local Tavern keeper offered him
00:37:42
a ride in a homecook meal with his
00:37:46
family Catherine the younger of the two
00:37:49
roing J girls was only 9 years
00:37:52
old I don't know why dad brought him
00:37:55
home we supposed he came from Denver we
00:37:59
were curious when he set at the table
00:38:01
cuz we'd never seen him before but he
00:38:03
was a nice looking young
00:38:05
man at dinner Curley didn't say much
00:38:08
about his family or his birthplace in
00:38:12
Montana He had a very nice way of
00:38:14
evading see when Mama asked him said
00:38:17
didn't you have some cousins or
00:38:18
something he just said well I did once
00:38:23
and he changed the subject and that's
00:38:26
the way curly was
00:38:28
and we respected him for it do you have
00:38:31
any brothers or
00:38:33
sisters well none as pretty as your
00:38:36
daughter's ma'am from the moment Curley
00:38:39
first saw Catherine's older sister
00:38:42
jessemine he was in love he would never
00:38:45
feel the same way about anyone
00:38:48
else Al ringer found curly a job working
00:38:52
at the local garage he earned enough to
00:38:54
move into a boarding house
00:38:58
now that he was a working man Curley
00:39:00
began to court jessemine Curley thought
00:39:03
quite a bit of jessemine because he
00:39:06
never went with other girls only jasine
00:39:10
when the United States entered the first
00:39:12
world war Curley enlisted in the Army
00:39:16
after serving on the European front he
00:39:19
returned home to Skyler and to
00:39:22
jessemine is jessemine
00:39:24
here no curly I'm sorry he's gone to
00:39:29
Omaha Jasmine liked him and he was a
00:39:32
gentleman always but she wanted other
00:39:35
things out of life and he didn't appear
00:39:38
to be
00:39:39
educated and his earning capacity wasn't
00:39:42
great I
00:39:43
suppose Curley followed Jess to Omaha
00:39:46
but she ended up marrying another man
00:39:50
Curley never married or had a family of
00:39:53
his own he spent the next 60 years alone
00:39:58
and that time he never talked about his
00:40:02
family over the years Curley saved a
00:40:05
considerable Fortune some suspect that
00:40:08
the money came from the sale of his rare
00:40:10
coin collection but Catherine thought he
00:40:13
just saved every penny he ever made well
00:40:17
he said he would get up in the morning
00:40:19
and after he'd eat breakfast he' put a
00:40:21
can on the pilot light and by the time
00:40:23
he'd come back and ready for lunch or
00:40:25
the evening meal it was just right to
00:40:28
eat he was that saving maybe that's how
00:40:31
he got the money when he died Curley
00:40:34
Left Behind more than
00:40:36
$200,000 in real estate stocks and bonds
00:40:40
and cash so far no legitimate heirs have
00:40:44
claimed the estate investigator Josh
00:40:47
Butler tracks down missing heirs
00:40:49
professionally he has researched the
00:40:51
case of curly grain but hasn't found
00:40:54
anyone yet
00:40:57
it's very strange that a man would
00:40:58
accumulate $200,000 in his lifetime and
00:41:02
that he would have no known relatives so
00:41:04
that anybody knew about and not leave
00:41:06
some sort of a written document
00:41:08
concerning the disposition of this money
00:41:11
somewhere there's somebody who has
00:41:13
enough information in their own family
00:41:15
that they're going to be able to come
00:41:16
forward and prove their entitlement to
00:41:18
this these are five of the few known
00:41:21
photographs of curly green showing him
00:41:24
as a young man in middle age
00:41:28
and before he died he said that he was
00:41:30
born in Kendall Montana and lived in
00:41:33
Denver he was known to have a collection
00:41:35
of gold coins some of which he might
00:41:38
have obtained in Mexico apparently he
00:41:41
once received postcards from someone in
00:41:44
Brooklyn New York Curley claimed he had
00:41:48
a brother who was killed in a shootout
00:41:50
he stated that his father Albert Harry
00:41:53
Green was born in England his mother an
00:41:56
Moren green was born in lvia neither of
00:41:59
Curley's parents have been
00:42:03
found if you have any information about
