Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 5, Episode 4

March 09, 2017 / 42:53

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the tragic stories of several victims, including DJ Lee Selwin, college student Bonnie Craig, and Army officer Matt Flores. It also highlights the case of the sweetheart swindler, Alfred Barett, who conned women out of their savings.

Lee Selwin, a 26-year-old DJ in Los Angeles, was murdered during a high-speed chase initiated by an enraged driver. Witnesses described the chase as lasting approximately five miles before Lee crashed into a telephone pole, resulting in his death. Nearly five years later, Franklin Legrand Perkins was indicted for the murder.

In Anchorage, Alaska, 18-year-old Bonnie Craig was found dead in a creek, initially thought to be an accident. However, her mother, Karen, uncovered evidence suggesting Bonnie had been murdered, leading to a long and complicated investigation. After 13 years, Kenneth Dion was arrested and convicted for the crime.

The episode also features the story of Matt Flores, a young Army officer who was shot in a parking lot in Georgia. Despite being surrounded by witnesses, no one saw the shooter. The investigation remains open as authorities seek new leads.

Lastly, the episode discusses Alfred Barett, the sweetheart swindler who used various aliases to con women out of their money. After being arrested in Wisconsin, he was identified and convicted of multiple fraud charges.

TL;DR

The episode covers the murders of Lee Selwin and Bonnie Craig, the shooting of Matt Flores, and the capture of conman Alfred Barett.

California 26-year-old DJ Lee selwin was
00:01:44
a familiar face at trendy rock and roll
00:01:46
nightclubs in Los
00:01:48
Angeles Lee was close friends with many
00:01:51
rock stars he also hung out with
00:01:54
motorcycle riders who Cruise the LA
00:01:56
streets after hours
00:02:03
but late one night Lee would fight for
00:02:06
his life the victim of a bizarre
00:02:08
encounter with a crazed
00:02:11
killer Lee San was a man who just loved
00:02:14
the nightlife of Los Angeles however
00:02:17
simply because he looked different Lee
00:02:19
and his friends were targeted for murder
00:02:21
the sad irony of Lee's death is that he
00:02:24
was only an innocent
00:02:27
bystander when he first got his
00:02:29
motorcycle I guess I was probably a
00:02:31
little bit nervous about it but I knew
00:02:33
that he was careful and I knew that he
00:02:36
wouldn't take unnecessary chances he
00:02:38
wasn't a crazy kind of person and so I
00:02:42
really didn't worry about
00:02:46
him early one morning Lee and three
00:02:49
friends left the Hollywood nightclub
00:02:51
unaware of the danger that waited for
00:02:53
them on the street they rode two by two
00:02:56
Lee and a friend trailing Bob caot and
00:02:59
another another friend who rode in
00:03:03
front driving along and all of a sudden
00:03:06
out of nowhere this truck comes flying
00:03:08
by me as he comes by he Dives in on me
00:03:11
laughing Dives in on me I look over mic
00:03:14
and in La this happens every day every
00:03:18
day but not so
00:03:21
blatant the [ __ ] you going what are you
00:03:24
trying to do I got infuriated cuz he was
00:03:27
trying to kill me and I'm really close
00:03:29
to the guy and he starts screaming at me
00:03:32
and look like a nut drug spear whatever
00:03:36
psycho then he rolls his window down and
00:03:38
spits in my
00:03:40
face anybody get spit in their face CU I
00:03:45
rate so I punched out his mirror and he
00:03:47
still spitting at me growling and
00:03:49
screaming and then he starts reaching
00:03:51
down like he's got a gun I put my fist
00:03:54
through his uh driver's window
00:04:00
as soon as I broke his window he shot
00:04:02
out of the intersection and he's doing a
00:04:04
U-turn and mik gu look at you this guy's
00:04:06
going to kill us he's coming after
00:04:09
[Applause]
00:04:11
us he just wanted to kill
00:04:15
me we're flying down the street and I
00:04:18
see his headlights bearing down on us so
00:04:20
we choose to go right and as I look back
00:04:23
he comes flying through the intersection
00:04:25
screeching bouncing and comes to a
00:04:27
slightest stop when Lee got to the the
00:04:29
intersection he turned left the truck
00:04:32
followed him now Lee was the target of
00:04:36
the driver's
00:04:38
rage according to the witnesses they
00:04:40
were both going anywhere from 60 to 90 M
00:04:43
hour here you have a young man who is
00:04:46
known by his friends known by his family
00:04:48
as a very Peaceable man who purposely
00:04:52
avoids
00:04:54
fights and all sudden he's in a
00:04:56
situation where he's terrorized by
00:04:58
someone in a car and this ha lasted
00:05:00
approximately about a 5 Mile Chase with
00:05:02
this man right on his rear
00:05:05
end and he chased him until the time
00:05:08
they actually hit him and drove him into

00:05:24
flew close to 180 ft before he came to

arrest
00:05:32
this is a murder it's a homicide someone
00:05:34
intentionally took the life of another
00:05:36
person it's a
00:05:39
homicide Lee received a massive skull
00:05:42
fracture in the Collision which led to
00:05:45
his death I received a call from Cedars
00:05:49
they said that he was in the intensive
00:05:52
care and I knew I just
00:05:56
knew but I don't believe it yet
00:06:00
it's real but it isn't
00:06:02
real he was such a big part of my life

00:07:19

lennin the proceeds from the concert
00:07:26
went to a fund offering a reward to
00:07:29
anyone who can bring Le's murderer to
00:07:33
Justice a lot of people take the opinion
00:07:36
that these guys are motorcycle gang
00:07:39
members when in fact there was four guys
00:07:42
out having a good time they happen to
00:07:43
like to ride motorcycles these people
00:07:45
weren't doing anything wrong that night
00:07:47
and they had a right to be out there
00:07:48
riding their motorcycles and dressed the
00:07:50
way they were Lee SN wasn't even the man
00:07:53
who gave him the problem but it didn't
00:07:55
matter to him who was on the motorcycle
00:07:57
he had to catch that motorcycle and he
00:08:00
had to run him
00:08:04
over it's incomprehensible to me to
00:08:07
think that we could never find this man
00:08:09
I can't even imagine that I could live
00:08:12
the rest of my
00:08:13
life not
00:08:15
knowing who did
00:08:20
this
00:08:21
update nearly 5 years after Lee Salan
00:08:25
was murdered authorities were finally
00:08:27
able to file charges in the case
00:08:30
one of our viewers provided the
00:08:32
information that led to the indictment
00:08:34
of Franklin Legrand
00:08:37
Perkins already serving time for
00:08:39
violating his probation Perkins was
00:08:42
convicted of first-degree murder and was
00:08:44
sentenced to life in
00:08:49
prison next when the daughter of an
00:08:52
undercover officer is found dead it
00:08:54
looks like a tragic accident but it's
00:08:57
not
00:09:07
Anchorage Alaska Just Before
00:09:11
Dawn 18-year-old Bonnie Craig is on her
00:09:14
way to school 2 days a week she walks 45
00:09:17
minutes through the early morning
00:09:19
Darkness to catch a bus to the
00:09:21
University of
00:09:23
Alaska Bonnie Prides herself on always
00:09:26
arriving early for her 7 a.m. class but
00:09:29
today she won't make it to
00:09:34
school later in the afternoon another
00:09:37
college student is out shooting
00:09:39
photographs on a hiking trail and she
00:09:41
makes a sickening Discovery the lifeless
00:09:45
body of a young woman is floating in a
00:09:48
creek her remains were located at the
00:09:51
bottom of a 33t cliff in Fairly shallow
00:09:54
water it wasn't a place that you would
00:09:56
normally uh hike along the the Stream to
00:09:59
get to where she was so she could have
00:10:02
been hiking and taken a Miss step
00:10:05
somewhere and slipped and fallen off of
00:10:07
the
00:10:08
cliff the following day the victim was
00:10:11
identified as Bonnie Craig the medical
00:10:14
examiner said she had drowned but Bonnie
00:10:17
had also suffered severe head injuries
00:10:20
probably from falling off a
00:10:24
cliff they told me Bonnie had died in a
00:10:26
hiking accident and I was wouldn't
00:10:29
believe it I still expected Bonnie to be
00:10:34
coming up to me and apologizing and
00:10:36
saying I'm sorry Mom it wasn't
00:10:41
me viewing her daughter's body was
00:10:45
devastating however when Karen took a
00:10:47
closer look she was alarmed by what she
00:10:50
saw her knuckles were bruised and broken
00:10:54
this is no hiking
00:10:55
accident there was Defensive wounds on
00:10:58
her body and I knew that she had been
00:11:03
attacked it was
00:11:06
murder authorities however were slow to
00:11:09
conclude that Bonnie had been murdered
00:11:12
what few leads they had they kept to
00:11:14
themselves but Bonnie's mother Karen
00:11:17
would finally get some help from a local
00:11:19
television reporter so you can tell me
00:11:22
anything about cause of death anything
00:11:23
like that not at this time it was really
00:11:25
tough for the community to take because
00:11:26
Bonnie was a well-liked well-known young
00:11:29
lady I get an official statement we
00:11:31
talked with Karen several days after
00:11:33
Bonnie's body was found and at that time
00:11:35
Troopers still were not releasing much
00:11:38
information in fact it wasn't until 6
00:11:41
months later that Karen finally got the
00:11:43
results of the sexual assault exam I had
00:11:47
originally asked if she had been raped
00:11:49
and they told me
00:11:51
no after fighting to get information
00:11:55
from them they revealed to me that yes
00:11:58
Bonnie was was brutally raped and
00:12:00
murdered the results of the autopsy
00:12:02
showed that there was evidence of sexual
00:12:04
activity we can't confirm whether it was
00:12:08
a sexual assault or whether it was
00:12:09
consensual
00:12:11
sex my daughter was recently killed over
00:12:13
here at mchu Creek kin soon began her
00:12:16
own search for information about
00:12:18
Bonnie's death everybody here in town
00:12:21
put up signs Flyers bumper
00:12:24
stickers we wanted to make sure that
00:12:27
until the crime was solved nobody was
00:12:30
going to forget about
00:12:31
it Karen was no stranger to
00:12:34
investigations or criminals she had
00:12:36
worked undercover as a Reserve officer
00:12:39
with the Anchorage police wearing a hood
00:12:41
and mask to conceal her identity Karen
00:12:44
would nod silently to identify those who
00:12:47
had sold her
00:12:49
drugs I was involved in what I thought
00:12:52
was minor drug buys I had gone out five
00:12:56
or six times and bought crack for the
00:12:59
anguage police
00:13:00
department Karen you got a sec a few
00:13:04
months after Bonnie's death Karen
00:13:06
learned that her undercover work may
00:13:08
have jeopardized her daughter's
00:13:11
life Karen was approached by an
00:13:13
acquaintance who claimed to have
00:13:15
information about Bonnie's murder these
00:13:17
guys at the other table according to
00:13:18
Karen the man said that her family had
00:13:21
been targeted on the orders of a local
00:13:24
drug
00:13:25
La he told me that her murder was
00:13:28
ordered by this this drug lord because
00:13:31
it was a message to the Anchorage Police
00:13:33
Department to back
00:13:35
off habon was murdered the day after the
00:13:39
people that I identified as drug
00:13:43
dealers were released from jail right
00:13:47
thanks for see me detective thanks have
00:13:49
a seat Karen gave this information to
00:13:51
the lead investigator of Bonnie's murder
00:13:54
but she was not satisfied with his
00:13:56
response just say it's a call he said
00:13:58
this was a retribution killing for the
00:13:59
undercover work I did with the Anchorage
00:14:01
Police Department wait wa who's his
00:14:02
Source when I gave him all the details
00:14:05
he just kept asking where you getting
00:14:07
this information I said it was from
00:14:09
somebody who did not want to be
00:14:10
identified are you going to help me here
00:14:12
who's your Source I'm not going to
00:14:13
reveal my source to you and I told him I
00:14:15
wouldn't reveal my source he told me
00:14:18
well then you're hindering your
00:14:19
daughter's investigation and I'm not
00:14:21
going to investigate this lead and to
00:14:24
this day I don't know what they've done
00:14:26
and probably will never know what
00:14:28
they've done as far is investigating
00:14:29
that lead the fact that she feels that
00:14:32
we may not have uh investigated uh
00:14:35
thoroughly enough or followed up on her
00:14:38
confidential informance lead I don't
00:14:41
believe to be true we followed up all
00:14:43
the leads and if she believes that we
00:14:45
haven't it might just be that we haven't
00:14:48
filled her in on every single thing that
00:14:50
we've
00:14:51
[Music]
00:14:54
done a full year after Bonnie's murder
00:14:57
the case took an unexpected turn when
00:14:59
Karen was contacted by one of Bonnie's
00:15:02
teachers
00:15:04
hello yes she really felt that there was
00:15:08
this one particular student that may
00:15:10
have been involved in the
00:15:12
murder what kid according to Karen the
00:15:16
teacher became suspicious when she read
00:15:18
the students class Journal which made
00:15:21
references to the date of Bonnie's
00:15:23
murder September
00:15:26
28th his journal was incredibly violent
00:15:30
filled with anger and he specifically
00:15:33
said that September 28th was going to be
00:15:36
a very tough day that he was going to be
00:15:38
put to a
00:15:39
test the teacher also told Karen that on
00:15:42
the morning Bonnie was murdered the
00:15:44
student in question was absent in was
00:15:48
class this morning I'm sorry I just
00:15:50
overslept he was wet like he had just
00:15:53
gotten out of a shower and she said it
00:15:56
smelled like he had just poured a whole
00:15:58
body botle of cologne on
00:16:02
himself after the murder his journal
00:16:06
became more peaceful there wasn't the
00:16:07
anger yet he knew that there was a
00:16:10
student that had just died and there was
00:16:12
no references to Bonnie's murder
00:16:15
detectives investigated the student but
00:16:18
quickly ruled him out as a suspect DNA
00:16:21
evidence recovered from a Bonnie at the
00:16:23
scene did not match uh DNA evidence
00:16:26
collected from the student at the
00:16:27
college I immediately told them that
00:16:31
didn't seem right to rule him out
00:16:33
because of DNA because there could have
00:16:35
been more than one person there was two
00:16:37
people it didn't have to be his DNA
00:16:40
Karen then uncovered more disturbing
00:16:43
information that particular student did
00:16:46
have a assault charge against him and he
00:16:50
had been bailed out of jail by a young
00:16:54
man who had been involved in another
00:16:56
murder I found it very surprising when I
00:16:59
when I saw the bail slip who bailed um
00:17:01
this student this potential suspect out
00:17:04
of jail the student and several other of
00:17:07
his friends were involved in a fatal
00:17:09
shooting here several years
00:17:11
ago it doesn't sound like the type of
00:17:13
group that a student who was up and up
00:17:16
would have been involved with I do
00:17:19
believe that he could have been the
00:17:22
murderer despite their disagreements
00:17:25
both Karen and investigators do agree on
00:17:28
one thing
00:17:29
the key to this mystery might rest with
00:17:31
Bonnie's morning
00:17:34
routine a young lady who was a neighbor
00:17:36
of hers who was a paper delivery type
00:17:38
person saw her around 520 walking down
00:17:42
her street another gentleman who had
00:17:45
seen Bonnie a couple of days prior in
00:17:47
the area of the bus stop saw her again
00:17:49
that morning and that was about the last
00:17:52
time that we have a confirmation of
00:17:54
anybody definitively uh seeing Bonnie
00:17:57
alive was around 620 20 that morning one
00:18:00
neighbor reported seeing an unknown car
00:18:02
in front of Bonnie's house early that
00:18:04
morning and someone called the police
00:18:06
tip line claiming to have seen Bonnie
00:18:09
that same morning talking to two men in
00:18:12
a
00:18:14
vehicle could someone have been lying in
00:18:16
wait for Bonnie Craig Karen intends to
00:18:19

00:18:48
Craig's death police finally made an
00:18:51
arrest a DNA match LED them to Kenneth
00:18:54
Dion who was on probation for robbery at
00:18:57
the time of the murder he was later
00:19:00
convicted and sentenced to life in
00:19:03
prison no one knows exactly what
00:19:05
happened to Bonnie between the time she
00:19:08
left home and the time that her body was
00:19:10
found later that day but as a result of
00:19:15
Bonnie's case Alaska lawmakers have
00:19:18
passed a bill making DNA samples

mandatory for all felons in

the small town of laurenburg North

00:21:45
dreams that would vanish in an instant
00:21:48
when Matt was gunned down in Cold Blood
00:21:51
he was just
00:21:55
26 Fort Stewart Georgia
00:21:59
when Matt married Denise leage their
00:22:01
friends called it the wedding of the
00:22:04
century Matt was a second lieutenant in
00:22:06
the Army who later served with honor in
00:22:09
Operation Desert
00:22:11
Storm Once Matt came home to Fort
00:22:13
Stewart in Georgia he and Denise started
00:22:16
a
00:22:17
family few months after his daughter
00:22:19
Danielle was born Matt began a promising
00:22:22
career with a computer company based in
00:22:25
California's Silicon Valley he traveled
00:22:28
there for a brief training
00:22:30
program it was our our new start in life
00:22:33
as a family us making decisions instead
00:22:35
of the military this was his dream come
00:22:38
true he he finished with the military
00:22:41
he' done everything right and now he had
00:22:43
landed the per the job of his
00:22:45
dreams it was Matt's ninth day of
00:22:48
training for his new
00:22:50
job that morning he arrived at work and
00:22:53
parked in a space in the middle of the
00:22:55
lot nearby another employee sat
00:22:58
listening to a talk show on her car
00:23:03
radio Chris Chris
00:23:06
taking when a gunshot rang out she moved
00:23:10
to
00:23:13
investigate oh
00:23:16
God the female witness realized that
00:23:19
he'd been shot and then ran to another
00:23:22
person for help and then also ran to a
00:23:24
shuttle bus to try and get somebody to
00:23:27
call 911 and ask for more help help me
00:23:31
approximately four or five uniformed
00:23:33
officers responded immediately including
00:23:34
a field supervisor paramedics and fire
00:23:38
also responded immediately but they were
00:23:40
not able to revive him and he was
00:23:42
pronounced dead at the scene Matt had
00:23:44
been shot once in the back of the head
00:23:46
at Point Blank Range he probably never
00:23:49
even saw his killer and Incredibly no
00:23:52
one else did either even though there
00:23:55
were more than 20 people in the parking
00:23:57
lot at the time
00:23:59
they said that he was assassinated
00:24:02
basically I couldn't believe what I was
00:24:06
hearing thinking this this is not
00:24:08
happening this is not happening he was
00:24:12
never involved in anything in terms of
00:24:15
drugs gambling uh fooling around any of
00:24:18
the things that you would think would
00:24:20
lead to being murdered nothing we
00:24:23
couldn't find anybody that didn't like
00:24:25
Matt everybody we met he was somebody
00:24:29
you'd be proud to have as a son or a
00:24:31
brother this does not make
00:24:33
sense there were several security
00:24:35
cameras covering the parking lot but the
00:24:37
killing took place just out of their
00:24:39
view in a blind spot one of the cameras
00:24:43
did however give the police their best
00:24:46
lead what you're about to see is a
00:24:48
precise Recreation of what the tape
00:24:52
reveals about 20 minutes before the
00:24:54
shooting there was a two-door sport
00:24:57
model Ford Explorer
00:24:59
that came into the parking lot and
00:25:01
parked in one of the parking stalls
00:25:03
facing directly into the camera lens a
00:25:06
few seconds later a two-door white Ford
00:25:09
Probe came in the same Lane that Matt
00:25:12
would take later the Explorer backed up
00:25:16
followed the white probe the Ford Probe
00:25:20
could look something like Matt's renle
00:25:22
which was a white Chevy
00:25:25
Corsica about 4 minutes before the shoot
00:25:28
shoting we see that same Explorer
00:25:30
exiting the parking lot and then about 3
00:25:33
minutes before the shooting we see the
00:25:35
vehicle come back into the parking lot
00:25:38
and go in the direction of where the
00:25:40
shooting
00:25:41
occurred at 8:12 a.m. 2 minutes before
00:25:45
the shooting two cars enter the lot one
00:25:48
is driven by the female eyewitness the
00:25:51
other by Matt Flores at 8:14 the murder
00:25:54
takes place just out of camera range 20
00:25:58
seconds later the Ford Explorer is seen
00:26:00
leaving the parking lot for the last
00:26:04
time if somebody were to watch the
00:26:06
videotape and see the activities of the
00:26:08
vehicle that morning and to see it leave
00:26:11
right after Matt was shot they certainly
00:26:13
could say that the vehicle was stalking
00:26:15
Matt that
00:26:16
morning the Explorer initially followed
00:26:18
a car that looked just like Matt's
00:26:21
Sergeant teal believes that the murder
00:26:23
may have been a case of mistaken
00:26:26
identity perhaps somebody to that
00:26:28
parking lot that morning
00:26:30
to do harm to somebody else and they got
00:26:33
the wrong person look at the flowers
00:26:37
this whoever did this to him I want them
00:26:41
to know what they've
00:26:43
taken hi Grandpa one minute life was
00:26:46
great we had everything and the next
00:26:48
minute I was
00:26:52
shattered I don't think she remembers
00:26:54
them anymore she was too
00:26:56
little I plan on showing her all the
00:27:00
videos that we have so she knows what
00:27:02
kind of a daddy that she had but at the
00:27:04
same time she won't know what it feels
00:27:06
like for Daddy to hug
00:27:09
her hi are you wa I lost everything that
00:27:14
day this case is still open and
00:27:16
authorities hope that someone will come
00:27:18
forward with a new lead so far the best
00:27:22
clue is still the Ford Explorer
00:27:24
videotaped in the parking lot the
00:27:27
vehicle is a twodo sport model
00:27:29
manufactured between 1991 and
00:27:32
1994 it has a distinctive black trim on
00:27:35
its lower

panels if you have any information about

next a mysterious cancer outbreak
00:27:53
targets children in a small Nevada town
00:28:01
[Music]
00:28:06
Fallon
00:28:08
Nevada population
00:28:11
8,000 for many who live here it seemed
00:28:14
like the perfect place to raise a
00:28:18
family but there was something terrible
00:28:22
happening to some of the children in
00:28:24
this small town you goof
00:28:27
bger all began with Dustin gross where'd
00:28:30
you get this bruise I fall off of my
00:28:34
back when I was giving him a bath I
00:28:36
noticed bruises on his back and his arms
00:28:39
and I asked him what was he doing um why
00:28:42
did he have these bruises and he told me
00:28:43
he was playing uh with his friend on the
00:28:46
big wheels and I thought okay that makes
00:28:48
sense that's where the bruises come
00:28:50
from any what you doing home uh well
00:28:53
he's been tired all day but then the
00:28:55
next day my husband had noticed a lot
00:28:57
more bruises and brought it up to my
00:28:59
attention I saw he had bruises all over
00:29:02
his body his arms his legs his stomach
00:29:04
his back and little red blood specks on
00:29:08
the surface of his skin and I knew that
00:29:11
um something was wrong at that point
00:29:14
you're going to feel all better Brenda
00:29:17
took Dustin to the local hospital and he
00:29:19
was immediately transferred to UC Davis
00:29:23
Medical Center the doctor told us that
00:29:26
Dustin had leukemia
00:29:28
I knew what leukemia was I knew it was a
00:29:30
cancer but I didn't actually realize how
00:29:34
severe the type of childhood leukemia
00:29:37
Dustin had can be fatal he was given
00:29:40
aggressive chemotherapy you want to take
00:29:43
your pills seeing him lie there so
00:29:46
lethargic and so
00:29:50
lifeless I think that that's probably
00:29:52
the hardest thing that I've ever had to
00:29:53
deal with it was not easy
00:29:58
within weeks of Dustin gross's diagnosis
00:30:01
two more local children were also found
00:30:04
to have
00:30:05
leukemia even at that point I was just
00:30:07
thinking it's just coincidence it's just
00:30:10
a terrible coincidence but it's a
00:30:12
coincidence but then shortly after the
00:30:14
third then we got a referral for a
00:30:17
fourth Barbara de Braga feared she was
00:30:20
looking at an epidemic it appeared to be
00:30:23
what experts call a cancer cluster she
00:30:27
requested a State
00:30:29
investigation as the state launched an
00:30:32
inquiry the disease struck victims
00:30:34
number five and
00:30:36
six a couple of days after there was a
00:30:39
seventh case
00:30:41
diagnosed this started to to kind of
00:30:43
make the hair on the back of my neck
00:30:44
stand up a little bit it was it was a
00:30:46
frightening time we have a series of
00:30:48
questions we want to go over with you Dr
00:30:51
Todd began looking for a common
00:30:52
denominator shared by all the victims
00:30:55
how is the water supplied to that house
00:30:57
as it
00:30:58
it's a well well okay but interviews
00:31:01
with the parents produced no answers and
00:31:04
new cases continued to
00:31:06
appear Zack beerley was the ninth child
00:31:10
diagnosed with
00:31:12
leukemia when I heard I was number nine
00:31:15
in a cancer cluster at that time my
00:31:19
child was so ill that all I could think
00:31:21
about was how do I get out of this mess
00:31:23
with a healthy
00:31:25
child Tammy Beardsley opened her house
00:31:27
house to Scientific
00:31:30
investigators there was a team of people
00:31:33
that came into our home and vacuumed
00:31:35
took death samples air quality samples
00:31:38
water samples biological testing blood
00:31:42
tests they found no answers inside the
00:31:45
homes and turn next to the environment
00:31:48
starting with the water
00:31:51
supply the one thing that makes this
00:31:54
community sort of Stand Out is that they
00:31:56
have one of the highest rate
00:31:58
of naturally occurring arsenic in their
00:32:01
water supply of any place in the
00:32:04
nation researchers also found mercury in
00:32:07
a nearby lake and several canals places
00:32:10
where children were known to play there
00:32:13
were other
00:32:14
possibilities pesticides had
00:32:16
contaminated nearby Farms underground
00:32:20
Atomic Testing during the 60s had left
00:32:23
traces of
00:32:26
radiation but scientists failed to leak
00:32:28
any of these factors to the cancer
00:32:33
cluster working on this really is like
00:32:35
trying to do a gigantic jigsaw
00:32:39
puzzle what we can say is that in fact
00:32:42
we likely will not have the complete
00:32:45
puzzle put together at the end of this
00:32:48
investigation there was one other
00:32:50
possibility Fallon is located 10 mi from
00:32:53
a naval air station used to train
00:32:56
fighter pilots the jet fuel contains
00:32:59
Benzene which is known to cause
00:33:03
cancer there is a pipeline which
00:33:05
transports jet fuel the pipe comes right
00:33:08
through and underneath Fallon and and
00:33:09
winds up at the Fallon Naval Air Station
00:33:12
we wondered was there fuel getting into
00:33:15
the water supply but we didn't find any
00:33:18
evidence that the water had been
00:33:20
contaminated with jet
00:33:22
fuel there's a a fear inside of me and
00:33:27
I'd like to find out what's making
00:33:29
children become diagnosed with leukemia
00:33:31
here before I bring another child into
00:33:33
the
00:33:36
world after 2 years of intensive
00:33:39
chemotherapy Dustin gross had his end of
00:33:42
treatment party his cancer was finally
00:33:45
in
00:33:47
remission I am worried for my family and
00:33:50
my other children and for Dustin still I
00:33:53
will never give up on pushing the
00:33:55
research to find what has caused
00:33:57
childhood leukemia and a cluster in this
00:34:00
community obviously the more research
00:34:03
and continued research is going to get
00:34:05
us closer and closer and I feel that we
00:34:07
will find it um but we cannot let
00:34:11
up all told 16 children developed
00:34:15
leukemia in a span of 5 years then for
00:34:18
the next 5 years not a single new case
00:34:21
was reported but a cluster of 10
00:34:24
childhood leukemia cases was reported in
00:34:27
in Sierra Vista
00:34:29
Arizona experts believe that ground
00:34:32
deposits of cobalt and tungsten may have
00:34:35
caused the outbreak in Fallon they've
00:34:38
asked for our help in locating other

00:35:08
savings police have nicknamed him the
00:35:11
sweetheart swindler why well because he
00:35:15
victimizes middle-aged divorcees and
00:35:18
widows one victim a woman from Missouri
00:35:21
will call Sarah has agreed to describe
00:35:24
her short 5-day encounter with the
00:35:26
sweetheart swindler
00:35:28
it all began with a phone
00:35:35
call hello oh hi this is Jerry gamble
00:35:40
calling you remember me uh no uh we we
00:35:43
met last year in a restaurant you were
00:35:45
two friends this gentleman called me and
00:35:48
he said that he had met me and that he
00:35:52
was calling to see if I would go out and
00:35:54
have dinner with him how would that be I
00:35:56
was divorced at this time
00:35:58
and I wasn't in the habit of dating so
00:36:01
it sounded kind of pleasant and this is
00:36:03
one reason why I agreed to go have
00:36:05
brunch the next morning I've been
00:36:07
divorced for a long time and I raised my
00:36:09
children myself so I work very hard
00:36:11
Sarah didn't remember where she had met
00:36:13
Jerry before she simply enjoyed the
00:36:16
conversation and soon he had completely
00:36:19
won her over I didn't think you were
00:36:21
interested at all I'm glad we were
00:36:22
finally able to get together well I
00:36:25
didn't know anything about you or who
00:36:26
you were I enjoyed the brunch and we
00:36:30
decided to kind of spend the day
00:36:32
together Jerry told Sarah that he was in
00:36:34
the jewelry business and did a lot of
00:36:37
traveling he said that he was a widower
00:36:39
and very lonely he needed someone to
00:36:42
share his life with traveling from one
00:36:45
luxury hotel to another and dining at
00:36:47
the best restaurants he confessed to
00:36:50
Sarah that she was just the type of
00:36:53
woman that he was looking
00:36:56
for I want wanted to believe him in all
00:36:59
these bright beautiful pictures that he
00:37:01
painted life really hasn't been easy for
00:37:04
me you know was really nice to think
00:37:06
that I'm maybe would be able to relax to
00:37:09
travel to have all these nice things and
00:37:12
I wouldn't have to work to me this was
00:37:14
very appealing one of the goals I made
00:37:16
for myself before I die is to visit all
00:37:18
50 Jerry took Sarah and her daughter
00:37:21
Ellen out to dinner Ellen was skeptical
00:37:24
but Jerry soon won her over too
00:37:28
look at those rings and those stones
00:37:30
aren't those gorgeous Ellen here just
00:37:32
try on that little cocktail
00:37:36

00:37:40
have it is may I try one more well sure
00:37:43
go ahead that's what jul for it's to be
00:37:44
worn look at that that's a real diamond
00:37:47
don't break it you can't hurt it it's
00:37:49
indestructible it's a
00:37:51
diamond Jerry made no sexual
00:37:54
advances but the day after he and Sarah
00:37:57
met
00:37:57
he was already making their marriage
00:38:00
plans he asked her to go with him on a
00:38:02
road trip which would be followed up by
00:38:04
their wedding something I need to ask a
00:38:06
favor of you I've got some checks coming
00:38:09
from the East Coast they should be Jerry
00:38:11
told Sarah that he would soon be
00:38:13
receiving several checks and that one
00:38:15
would be made out to her so that she
00:38:17
could pay her bills before they left
00:38:20
Sarah had no way of knowing that Jerry
00:38:22
had stolen the checks from one of his
00:38:24
former girlfriends and then made it out
00:38:27
to sah
00:38:29
himself late the next afternoon Jerry
00:38:33
rushed Sarah to the bank telling her the
00:38:35
check had just arrived at the last
00:38:38
minute he asked her to take out some
00:38:40
cash for him yes I'd like to deposit
00:38:43
this and I'd like to withdraw
00:38:45
$3,000 ma'am this is an out ofate Check
00:38:49
Yes I'm going to have to get my
00:38:51
supervisor's approval coming in at that
00:38:53
time East Coast banks are closed I uh
00:38:57
look to the check saw that it was made
00:38:59
the Sarah she was a good customer and
00:39:02
she was insistent the check was good so
00:39:05
I went ahead and okay the check for her
00:39:07
you have a good day thank you we were
00:39:09
going to Nashville and he was going to
00:39:12
get my engagement ring there then we
00:39:13
were going to go on forther East and
00:39:17

00:39:22
[Music]
00:39:26
married that same afternoon just 4 days
00:39:29
after they had met Jerry and Sarah were
00:39:32
on the road to Tennessee in Sarah's car
00:39:36
Jerry had invited Sarah's daughter Ellen
00:39:38
to go with them M were 5 minutes early
00:39:42
don't worry about in mice Jerry said
00:39:44
that he had a business meeting and asked
00:39:46
Sarah and Ellen to meet him in a hotel
00:39:48
lobby
00:39:50
afterwards he never showed up right
00:39:53
there we waited around the hotel and
00:39:56
after a couple hours
00:39:58
I realized that we had been
00:40:01
taken I was angry truly I was
00:40:05
angry I really didn't know what to
00:40:09
do back in Missouri Sarah found out that
00:40:12
the check Jerry had given her was no
00:40:14
good she had been conned out of
00:40:17
$3,000 after she went to the local
00:40:19
police to file a report they discovered
00:40:22
that Jerry had been using the same scam
00:40:25
all over the country
00:40:28
since I started my case I believe he's a
00:40:31
suspect in at least 22 other cases in as
00:40:34
many as 15 different states
00:40:37
unfortunately probably only a third of
00:40:39
the cases get reported due to the to the
00:40:41
victims being embarrassed we think he
00:40:43
locates victims primarily through
00:40:45
newspaper articles or
00:40:49
advertisements we've known that on
00:40:51
occasion he has access Lonely Hearts
00:40:53
clubs or mailers you have to understand
00:40:57
that that is all he does he's very very
00:41:00
good at it that's how he makes his
00:41:01
living and one shouldn't particularly be
00:41:04
embarrassed by being pulled in by this
00:41:06
type of scam and and I mean a lot of
00:41:08
women in my line of work but I never
00:41:10
know whether they're interested in me or
00:41:12
they're just after my jewelry well I'm
00:41:14
an attorney and I'd like to see him
00:41:16
stopped I'd like to see him pay for it I
00:41:19
mean I know how I feel from all
00:41:22
this it's a very devastating feeling
00:41:29
