March 09, 2017 / 42:53

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers a young Marine's brutal beating, a UFO encounter in Texas, the murder of a college athlete, and a con artist's scams.

In Koga Park, California, 20-year-old Marine Joffrey Ramos is attacked by gang members after a party. Despite severe injuries, he survives after emergency brain surgery, but suffers permanent damage. The ringleader, Louie Quesada, is later arrested and convicted of attempted murder.

In Texas, Betty Cash, Vicky Landrum, and Vicky's grandson encounter a UFO that leaves them with mysterious illnesses. Betty is hospitalized for acute radiation poisoning, and they suspect military involvement after seeing helicopters at the scene.

The murder of Amy Willard in Philadelphia is investigated, with three eyewitnesses providing conflicting accounts. Ultimately, Arthur Jerome Buar Jr. is identified through DNA evidence and convicted of her murder.

Josephine White, a master con artist, scams elderly victims out of their savings through a pigeon drop scheme. She is arrested and sentenced to prison after defrauding many individuals.

TL;DR

A Marine is beaten, a UFO encounter leads to illness, a college athlete is murdered, and a con artist scams the elderly.

00:01:42
rival gang member an innocent
00:01:46
victim here is 20-year-old Joffrey Ramos
00:01:51
handsome good-natured and a dedicated
00:01:55
Marine right boys come on let's go Joff
00:01:59
r and some other Marines had been
00:02:01
invited to a party that was supposed to
00:02:03
be innocent fun come plenty more of that
00:02:06
come on hey guys you made
00:02:09
it what did you bring this JY the Clean
00:02:13
Cut Marines mingled easily with the
00:02:15
crowd of party goers according to one of
00:02:18
joffre's friends this included some gang
00:02:22
members they didn't say nothing to us
00:02:24
you know didn't pay no mind to us you
00:02:26
know didn't start no trouble with us we
00:02:28
just we did our thing and they did
00:02:30
theirs you know and then without warning
00:02:33
you think you were doing with
00:02:36
Pablo then that's when the whole fight
00:02:38
broke out just everybody was
00:02:41
fighting Joff Frey and his friends
00:02:43
decided not to get
00:02:45
involved it was time to
00:02:50
go when they reached the Jeep Joff FR
00:02:53
remembered that he had left his wallet
00:02:55
in the
00:02:57
backyard his friend did not not see him
00:03:00
turn back and they drove off without
00:03:03
him jofra didn't know that he was
00:03:05
heading straight for a fight some gangs
00:03:09
considered destroying a marine a badge
00:03:12
of
00:03:13
honor yo
00:03:15
Marine what's up man get nothing let's
00:03:20
take this fool out homes the ring leader
00:03:23
of the group was a known gang member
00:03:25
named Louie
00:03:27
quesada what's up you know how to kill
00:03:30
yeah we can show you you're going down
00:03:33
man jofre sized up the odds there was
00:03:37
only one way
00:03:39
out let's get him get him get him get
00:03:41
him get him hurry up get
00:03:46
him Joffrey never had a chance he was
00:03:49
beaten and kicked over and over
00:03:57
again the vicious attack lasted at a
00:03:59
full 5 minutes ain't so tough huh it was
00:04:03
long enough for Joffrey's friends to
00:04:06
return they went inside to look for him
00:04:10
meanwhile a car happened to drive up the
00:04:12
street quesada assumed that it was
00:04:15
filled with Marines and took
00:04:19
aim by the grace of God there was nobody
00:04:22
hit and we very much could have had five
00:04:24
additional people laying out there dead
00:04:27
believe a neighbor or somebody was
00:04:29
yelling as a dead kid in the
00:04:31
street so then we ran over there grab
00:04:35
some ready ready 1 3 go you could say it
00:04:39
was like a nightmare Ramos I don't know
00:04:41
the way he looked bloody his face was
00:04:43
swollen he was breathing but he looked
00:04:46
like he was just dead you know this guy
00:04:49
needs help
00:04:50
man beding in all that commotion the
00:04:53
police
00:04:54
arrested the Marines we're Marines man
00:04:57
we didn't our initial belief because of
00:05:00
the injuries that Joffrey incurred in
00:05:02
the beating was that he was going to die
00:05:04
and even though he hadn't died yet we
00:05:06
were handling it as if he had died cuz
00:05:09
it was that
00:05:10
serious it was awful just to see him
00:05:13
laying there like that I remember
00:05:15
looking through these glass wall that
00:05:18
they had in the room and I could see him
00:05:20
laying
00:05:22
there his head was bandaged and it had
00:05:25
tubes coming out of his head his face
00:05:29
always whole face was swollen his nose
00:05:32
his
00:05:34
lip and uh I thought it was going to
00:05:38
die one side of Joffrey's head had been
00:05:41
crushed he underwent emergency brain
00:05:44
surgery and spent 3 weeks in a coma
00:05:47
doctors did not think he would
00:05:50
survive I was
00:05:53
unconscious for a long time and um when
00:05:58
I came up
00:06:00
I I didn't know
00:06:03
anything there's some um now some things
00:06:07
are coming but some are still
00:06:10
gone Joffrey suffered some permanent
00:06:13
brain damage it's remarkable that he's
00:06:16
even alive much less functioning he
00:06:19
spent 8 months learning to walk and talk
00:06:22
again it's very unfair that Joffrey has
00:06:26
to go to life facing all of these
00:06:29
challenges that he has now while Lou
00:06:32
Casada is out there having a good time
00:06:35
and doesn't even
00:06:37
have any idea of what he's
00:06:39
done to Joffrey or any of you know or
00:06:43
any of
00:06:45
us Joffrey had hoped to make the
00:06:47
military a career instead he had to
00:06:50
accept an honorable discharge from the
00:06:54
Marines I'll think about this till I get
00:06:57
old and the number one question is why
00:07:01
why would they why would they do
00:07:06
that
00:07:08
update Louie kesana has been
00:07:12
captured Los Angeles police received the
00:07:14
tip that quesada had fled to
00:07:16
Mexico he was arrested and brought to
00:07:19
the United States to stand trial quesada
00:07:22
was convicted of attempted murder and
00:07:25
sentenced to 21 years in
00:07:28
prison

00:07:32
next three people in Texas develop a
00:07:35
mysterious illness within hours of their
00:07:38
encounter with a
00:07:50
UFO State Road 1485 near Dayton Texas on
00:07:55
the outskirts of
00:07:57
Houston that sure was a good dinner at
00:07:59
around 900 p.m. Betty cash Vicky landram
00:08:02
and Vicky's 7-year-old grandson kby were
00:08:05
returning home after dinner grandma
00:08:08
what's that
00:08:09
like what is that like we were just
00:08:12
driving along talking and all of a
00:08:14
sudden we seen this bright light we
00:08:17
didn't know what it
00:08:19
was but we knew that there was something
00:08:22
that was lighting up the sky it seems to
00:08:25
be moving closer think you're right
00:08:27
Vicky it is you can see through the
00:08:30
trees and it started to get real close
00:08:33
then I knew it wasn't a plane mama what
00:08:36
is that I don't know I don't know we had
00:08:39
began to feel the heat and all of a
00:08:42
sudden Vicky screamed for me to stop
00:08:45
stop stop and when I stopped she went
00:08:50
forward and her
00:08:52
handprint was embedded into the dash of
00:08:55
the
00:08:56
car and I thought well I've got to see
00:08:58
what this is so I walked toward the
00:09:01
front of the
00:09:03
automobile and I stood there looking up
00:09:07
to try to figure out what this object
00:09:11
was it was a diamond shaped object then
00:09:15
at the bottom Flames were shooting out
00:09:19
the heat was tremendous it just felt
00:09:22
like I was burning from the inside out I
00:09:25
was actually afraid really to move Benny
00:09:29
let's get out of
00:09:31
here when I reached for the door handle
00:09:34
the door handle was so hot I couldn't
00:09:37
even began to hold on to
00:09:39
it I was more than
00:09:41
scared the only thing I was thinking was
00:09:45
are we going to get out of here
00:09:47
alive it's moving
00:09:53
away just moments later a large Squadron
00:09:57
of helicopters descended on in the area
00:10:00
they were the large helicopters that has
00:10:04
the double rotaries on them I counted
00:10:07
22 and uh I knew had to belong to the
00:10:13
Army for years Betty Vicki and Colby
00:10:17
have battled with the government trying
00:10:19
to get clear answers to what actually
00:10:21
took place that night they've also
00:10:23
fought against mysterious illnesses
00:10:26
illnesses whose symptoms appeared just
00:10:28
ours after the
00:10:33
encounter
00:10:34
[Music]
00:10:36
emmae at 1:00 Kobe woke me up crying and
00:10:40
he was begging me for water he had a
00:10:43
fever and he had vomited all over the
00:10:46
bed does your tummy
00:10:49
hurt yeah the next morning Vicky and
00:10:52
kobby were still suffering from nausea
00:10:55
and what appeared to be severe cases of
00:11:00
sunburn Betty Betty was in even worse
00:11:04
shape you wake her temperature was
00:11:08
dangerously high and large red welts had
00:11:11
appeared on her face and
00:11:15
hands hi bet over the next 4 days
00:11:19
Betty's condition grew more serious
00:11:22
Vicky finally convinced her to see a
00:11:24
doctor in Houston Betty was immediately
00:11:26
admitted to the hospital been on the
00:11:29
sound a little much maybe no 3 weeks
00:11:31
later she underwent treatment for acute
00:11:34
radiation poisoning what I'd like to do
00:11:36
is admit her to the hospital and run
00:11:37
some more test Betty was in the hospital
00:11:39
for 6 weeks she lost more than 50% of
00:11:42
her hair and patches of skin on her face
00:11:46
have somebody from admitting there's
00:11:47
absolutely no doubt in my mind that
00:11:48
Betty was exposed to high doses of
00:11:52
radiation as to what the source was I
00:11:55
can't exactly
00:11:56
say after her release from the Hospital
00:11:59
Betty asked for help from UFO
00:12:02
investigator John schusler a former NASA
00:12:05
project
00:12:07
manager we had done several interviews
00:12:09
with Betty and Vicki and then we went
00:12:11
out to the location where this happened
00:12:13
they were very very clear on where it
00:12:16
happened and how it happened yes sir
00:12:18
came right over those trees right there
00:12:21
sir they were able to tell us exactly
00:12:23
where along the road that they stopped
00:12:26
because there were certain markers that
00:12:27
identified the spot they were able to
00:12:29
point out exactly what they saw the
00:12:31
object coming down out of the sky over
00:12:33
the road and hovering there they were
00:12:36
able to point out a spot on the road
00:12:38
that indicated that it had been heated
00:12:40
to an extreme level of heating it was
00:12:43
burned and it was very clear to the
00:12:46
naked eye several weeks after we went to
00:12:48
the spot and saw this burned area
00:12:50
someone came along dug up the road and
00:12:53
haul it away and replace it with new
00:12:55
asphalt some of the witnesses that
00:12:57
watched this happen said that people
00:12:59
brought in unmarked trucks dug up the
00:13:01
road put the material on the trucks
00:13:03
covered it with a tarpoon and drove away
00:13:06
and what did it do when it hovered over
00:13:07
the trees in addition to taking Betty
00:13:10
and Vicky's testimony we went to every
00:13:12
individual living within 5 miles of this
00:13:15
area at least 10 other people had seen
00:13:17
the object and seven or eight other
00:13:19
people had seen the helicopters and the
00:13:21
descriptions were all very similar to to
00:13:23
what Betty and Vicki
00:13:25
described one eyewitness was police
00:13:28
officer L Walker who was in the area on
00:13:31
the night that Betty and Vicki
00:13:33
encountered the
00:13:35
object the wife Marie and I was
00:13:37
returning back from my mother and Dad's
00:13:40
and as we was coming out of some tree
00:13:41
lines I saw a
00:13:44
helicopter it was shining a spotlight at
00:13:47
the
00:13:48
ground and then I heard other noise of
00:13:51
other helicopters behind it and I
00:13:54
stopped the car cuz I didn't know what
00:13:56
was going on the helicopters were
00:13:58
military and they was all flying fairly
00:14:01
low to the ground and all of them had
00:14:03
search beams on I thought maybe there
00:14:05
was an airplane down but uh they didn't
00:14:07
hesitate they just kept on in the same
00:14:09
direction they was going which would
00:14:12
probably intersect the area where Vicki
00:14:14
said at her encounter
00:14:17
was convinced that the military was
00:14:20
somehow involved Betty and Vicki
00:14:22
appealed to their Senators see ladies
00:14:25
the Air Force agreed to a meeting at
00:14:27
burkstrom Air Force for
00:14:29
space as they entered the room Vicky
00:14:32
noticed a large map the exact spot where
00:14:36
the encounter
00:14:37
occurred was clearly
00:14:40
marked well sir we were coming home from
00:14:43
dinner and as we were going down this
00:14:45
road we saw this large object according
00:14:47
to Betty and Vicki they were questioned
00:14:49
for more than 2 hours the interview was
00:14:52
recorded by a military stenographer then
00:14:55
what happened well as I got in the car
00:14:57
then the helicopter started approaching
00:14:59
what helicopters the military
00:15:01
helicopters you say military yes how do
00:15:03
you know they were military in the end
00:15:05
the two men denied that any military or
00:15:08
government operation had been conducted
00:15:10
at that time and at that place the women
00:15:13
were told that they were entitled to
00:15:15
file a claim and that the Air Force
00:15:17
would review their case get them to your
00:15:19
lawyers and get them back to
00:15:21
us four weeks later Betty and Vicky's
00:15:25
claims for medical damages were denied
00:15:28
come on Co
00:15:30
what did Betty cash and Vicky and Kobe
00:15:33
Landrum see in the Texas sky on that
00:15:37
winter night there are two possible
00:15:39
explanations in this case one is it was
00:15:42
an experimental craft of some kind by
00:15:44
probably our
00:15:45
government the other it was a un
00:15:48
unidentified flying object possibly
00:15:51
extraterrestrial I don't believe in the
00:15:52
little green men and
00:15:55
uh it had to be an object
00:15:59
it could have been a spacecraft that the
00:16:01
government was carrying but our
00:16:03
government was carrying
00:16:06
it Betty Vicky and Kobe continue to
00:16:09
battle illnesses that doctors say could
00:16:12
be the result of massive radiation
00:16:14
exposure Betty has been diagnosed with
00:16:17
several types of cancer she Vicki and
00:16:20
Kobe all have white blood cell counts
00:16:22
that are far below
00:16:25
normal their immune systems now have
00:16:28
difficulty fighting off even minor
00:16:31
infections is's having visual problems
00:16:34
and there are lots of suggestions that
00:16:36
that may be related to radiation as well
00:16:39
but depends on the kind of exposure and
00:16:40
someone needs to tell us what the
00:16:41
exposure was so we can figure it out if
00:16:45
it's a top secret object that's protect
00:16:48
in the United States then I could say I
00:16:50
could I could forgive them for
00:16:54
that but at least they owe us to tell us
00:16:58
exactly why we were burned and what type
00:17:01
of radiation that we were exposed to and
00:17:04
how
00:17:07
much
00:17:10
update after the UFO incident Betty cash
00:17:13
was hospitalized for Cancer Treatments

00:17:19
year she died 18 years later at the age
00:17:23
of
00:17:24
69 the Air Force declined to be
00:17:27
interviewed for this
00:17:29
their official position is that no
00:17:32
military or government
00:17:33
operation had taken place if you have

00:18:30
worse than that the person that hurt Amy
00:18:33
and took Amy has no idea what they've
00:18:36
done I mean uh she was such an integral
00:18:39
vital part of life it's very hard very
00:18:43
very
00:18:44
hard I guess the biggest question in
00:18:46
anybody's mind is why did the person

Amy the victim was Amy Willard home from

number 20 Amy
00:19:02
will at school she was a star athlete
00:19:06
Amy had been ranked among the top 25
00:19:08
female lacrosse players in the United
00:19:11
States Patriots number aim always said
00:19:15
whether they won or lost she had a good
00:19:17
day she felt good it didn't matter what
00:19:19
the outcome was they didn't have to win
00:19:21
all the time as long as everybody
00:19:22
enjoyed what they were doing as much as
00:19:24
she
00:19:26
did Amy had no enemies no secret habits
00:19:29
or taste for danger there was no
00:19:32
apparent reason for her to
00:19:36
Die the police focused on Amy's
00:19:39
movements the night that she was killed
00:19:41
they eventually heard from three
00:19:43
different men claiming to have been at
00:19:45
the scene of the crime each one had a
00:19:48
different story to tell and each one
00:19:51
would become a
00:19:53
suspect on the night she was killed Amy
00:19:56
met friends at Smokey Joe's Tavern
00:19:59
a well-known College hangout she stayed
00:20:02
for about 3 hours are you seeing anyone
00:20:05
yeah I've got on a couple of dates
00:20:06
lately her friends say that she drank
00:20:09
less than one beer and left the bar
00:20:11
somewhere between 130 and 140 a.m.
00:20:16
[Music]
00:20:19
bye at 2:03 a.m. Amy's car was
00:20:23
discovered by off-duty
00:20:26
paramedics it was pull over on the
00:20:28
shoulder of a highway transition Road
00:20:31
engine running headlights on and the car
00:20:34
radio was playing Amy however was
00:20:38
gone and there were fresh blood stains
00:20:41
on the
00:20:43
pavement within an hour State Police
00:20:46
were scouring the area for
00:20:48
Clues they found some blood along the
00:20:51
right side of the car on the guard rail
00:20:53
they found a pal print on the car and
00:20:55
the next morning about 10:00 a.m. at the
00:20:57
top of the ramp they found uh her
00:21:00
underwear and her tennis
00:21:02
shoes with daylight the search expanded
00:21:05
to include helicopters K9 teams and
00:21:08
hundreds of
00:21:09
volunteers around noon a guy showed up
00:21:12
at the ramp and told him he had been on
00:21:14
the ramp the night before and had seen a
00:21:16
car did you see anyone near the car no I
00:21:19
just saw the car they took his name and
00:21:21
address and said they'd get back in
00:21:22
touch with him and in the interim they
00:21:24
checked him out and found out that he
00:21:25
used to work in the area of 16th and
00:21:27
Indian an where Amy's body was
00:21:30
found Amy's body was dumped 20 mil from
00:21:33
her car and just five blocks from where
00:21:36
the young man had once
00:21:39
worked the investigation quickly focused
00:21:42
on this self-proclaimed
00:21:44
iwitness at first he seemed
00:21:48
Cooperative police searched his car and
00:21:51
they found handcuffs they found a
00:21:53
flashlight that is the type used by
00:21:55
police and when they searched his house
00:21:57
they found some police paraphernalia and
00:21:59
they also found a magazine that you
00:22:01
could be used to order police
00:22:04
equipment before the search
00:22:06
investigators learned that the man had
00:22:07
once been charged with impersonating a
00:22:09
police officer and then without warning
00:22:12
he suddenly stopped cooperating and
00:22:15
hired a
00:22:16
lawyer he says through his lawyer he
00:22:18
didn't do it but he also denies coming
00:22:21
to the ramp that day and police are
00:22:23
steadfast saying he did come to the ramp
00:22:25
no just the eyewitness remained a PO
00:22:28
poal suspect but police were unable to
00:22:30
find any evidence to link him directly
00:22:33
to the
00:22:34
murder meanwhile a second witness came
00:22:37
forward to say that he too drove by
00:22:39
Amy's car the night she was killed
00:22:43
help the second witness an off-duty
00:22:45
Pennsylvania state trooper claimed that
00:22:48
he saw Amy's car and spoke to a uniform
00:22:50
policeman sitting in a squad car that
00:22:53
was parked behind
00:22:54
it the trooper would later resign
00:22:58
the police are very adamant that this
00:23:00
Trooper was elsewhere when he said he
00:23:02
was on the ramp but the trooper is just
00:23:04
as adamant that he saw what he saw and
00:23:06
he has always stood by his story that he
00:23:08
saw this cop car behind Amy and then a
00:23:12
third witness came
00:23:13
forward it was a local policeman he
00:23:16
claimed to have driven by Amy's car you
00:23:19
okay here yeah already called the local
00:23:21
PD they're on their way he also reported
00:23:24
that he had talked to the ambulance
00:23:26
crew the Poli police reinterviewed the
00:23:28
ambulance crew and they said that
00:23:30
absolutely they had not talked to this
00:23:31
officer that night he agreed to resign
00:23:34
from the force and cooperate fully with
00:23:36
them and in exchange he would not be
00:23:38
prosecuted for lying to them one alleged
00:23:42
police impersonator and two
00:23:46
officers each had thrust himself into
00:23:49
the Limelight with an eyewitness account
00:23:52
and each in turn was viewed as a
00:23:55
potential suspect there a lot of
00:23:58
coincidences here um the first suspect
00:24:00
worked in the area of where Amy's body
00:24:02
was
00:24:03
found the trooper lived around the
00:24:05
corner very near where Amy lived with
00:24:07
her
00:24:08
mom the officer used to take his drunk
00:24:11
drivers for blood test to the hospital
00:24:13
where Amy's mom
00:24:15
works are they coincidences or are they
00:24:18
all linked I mean that's for the police
00:24:20
to find
00:24:23
out a woman like Amy would not have
00:24:25
stopped for just anyone it's nearly 2:00
00:24:28
a.m. in the morning she's in a car she's
00:24:30
alone so a police impersonator or a
00:24:32
police officer seems to be the most
00:24:35
likely reason she would have pulled
00:24:38
[Music]
00:24:43
over take a step out of the car
00:24:48
please I don't understand what the take
00:24:50
a step over
00:24:51
[Music]
00:24:52
here I don't understand what the problem
00:24:55
is listen we been on the road
00:24:57
[Music]
00:24:59
I think Amy realized she was in trouble
00:25:01
and was going to run and took off and
00:25:03
that she was moving they hit her and aim
00:25:05
was
00:25:09
gone that's what I would like to think
00:25:12
happened that she only had fear for a
00:25:15
couple seconds and that she didn't know
00:25:16
anything else that happened to
00:25:18
her we loved Amy we loved her more than
00:25:21
anything in this world and we are
00:25:23
thankful to God for giving her to us and
00:25:26
the way that he chose to enter life
00:25:28
that's something that we try to deal
00:25:30
with but we're not going to dwell on our
00:25:32
job is making sure that Amy is
00:25:34
remembered for the wonderful person that
00:25:36
she was instead of the way that her life
00:25:37
was ended that's for the police to
00:25:43
handle update Amy willage murder has
00:25:48
been solved and none of the three
00:25:50
original suspects were
00:25:52
involved almost a year after Amy died a
00:25:56
woman reported that her her car was
00:25:58
intentionally bumped by a driver who
00:26:00
tried to get her to pull
00:26:02
over she gave the man's license plate to
00:26:05
the
00:26:06
police the car was traced to Arthur
00:26:09
Jerome bmer Jr who was on Parole after
00:26:13
killing a man over a parking
00:26:16
spot DNA test showed a match between
00:26:19
buar and a sample found on Amy's body I
00:26:22
ain't done nothing Arthur Drome balar Jr
00:26:25
was convicted of rape murder
00:26:28
and kidnapping he was sentenced to death
00:26:31
by a lethal
00:26:34
injection next the police track a female
00:26:38
con artist a criminal with a thousand
00:26:46
[Music]
00:26:51
faces Norwood
00:26:55
Massachusetts an El woman who will call
00:26:58
Barbara is approached by an excited and
00:27:01
nervous stranger right by that newspaper
00:27:04
I found this bag let me show you what I
00:27:07
found I found this I think there's about
00:27:11
$70,000 in there what what do you think
00:27:14
we should
00:27:15
do I says you better go to police to
00:27:18
find
00:27:19
out oh she says no I don't go to police
00:27:23
maybe they take money and I don't want
00:27:26
that inside I found this note and look
00:27:30
look this is all it says it says dear
00:27:32
brother we've done it again this time at
00:27:35
the RAC track I've enclosed the money
00:27:37
and sent this way to avoid paying income
00:27:39
tax and then it signed Jose excuse me
00:27:42
ladies but is is that something wrong
00:27:44
may I be of any help to you Barbara is
00:27:47
retired and living on a small
00:27:49
tension she is about to fall victim to a
00:27:52
well-rehearsed scam known as the pigeon
00:27:55
drop the water of money she has been
00:27:58
shown is
00:27:59
worthless wae the woman is a con artist
00:28:02
and the man is her accomplice it is a
00:28:05
good idea come on it's a great idea let
00:28:08
just go go Barbara is the perfect Target
00:28:11
for con artist Josephine white a master
00:28:15
of the pigeon drop white has allegedly
00:28:17
scanned nearly a million dollars from
00:28:20
her innocent victims all of them living
00:28:22
on small fixed
00:28:26
incomes once I pinned down that the
00:28:28
person I was looking for was Josephine
00:28:30
white I was surprised to see how many
00:28:32
different appearances that she had she
00:28:34
changes like a chameleon she puts on
00:28:36
weight she loses weight she was
00:28:38
described in a number of different
00:28:39
Fashions and in addition to her own
00:28:41
appearance changing she'll use wigs
00:28:43
sunglasses quite a bit of jewelry and
00:28:46
very often this will grab a woman's
00:28:47
attention away from the actual physical
00:28:50
appearance you know my my boss is like
00:28:53
he's like a tax specialist I mean he's a
00:28:55
wizard with finances why don't we just
00:28:57
talk White and her accomplice are about
00:29:00
to begin phase two of the pigeon drop
00:29:03
they persuade Barbara to go with them to
00:29:05
get advice from Josephine's
00:29:08
boss and then my wife oh God God bless
00:29:11
us well well she's got a cancer in a
00:29:13
stomach or something to lure Barbara
00:29:15
further into their trap the accomplice
00:29:17
tells a hard luck story emphasizing how
00:29:20
desperately he needs the
00:29:23
money they arrive at an office building
00:29:26
where Joseph claims her boss Works don't
00:29:30
worry everything's going to be fine are
00:29:32
you sure
00:29:36
yes I don't know U maybe we should tell
00:29:39
police ma'am don't worry about it please
00:29:41
the older woman actually wants to do the
00:29:43
right thing even though the victim may
00:29:45
make mention of backing out of the
00:29:46
situation the third party puts the
00:29:48
pressure on them so she has a motion
00:29:50
playing on one side and pressure of the
00:29:52
money being given to her on the other
00:29:54
side she's really caught in a
00:29:56
vice
00:29:58
white tells them that her boss says that
00:30:00
they can legally keep the money
00:30:03
$222,000 each but she claims that a
00:30:07
$55,000 goodfaith deposit for income tax
00:30:11
purposes is required do you have a
00:30:13
credit card on
00:30:15
you phase three of the scam now begins
00:30:19
convince Barbara to put up the
00:30:22
$5,000 oh no I don't use credit card
00:30:26
well do you have $5,000 the bank oh
00:30:28
maybe maybe I have 5,000 let's get going
00:30:31
let's go right Remember by the end of
00:30:34
the day you'll have the $5,000 back in
00:30:36
the bank plus
00:30:40
$222,000 more and you're sure you want
00:30:43
to take it all 1 2 $5,000 is nearly all
00:30:48
of Barbara's
00:30:52
savings white returns to the same office
00:30:56
building I'll go give him this she tells
00:30:59
Barbara that she'll show the $55,000 to
00:31:02
her
00:31:03
boss a few minutes later white returns
00:31:06
and triggers the final phase of the
00:31:09
pigeon drop you can go in and get your
00:31:11
money now room 204 Barbara is instructed
00:31:14
to meet the boss herself we'll be right
00:31:18
here waiting for
00:31:26
you
00:31:30
there was nobody there then I come back
00:31:34
again to the place where they was
00:31:38
parked Barbara finds the parking lot
00:31:43
empty Josephine white the car the man
00:31:47
and Barbara's
00:31:49
$5,000 have
00:31:51
vanished the scam has taken less than 2
00:31:55
hours at this point the victim is
00:31:58
devastated the victim doesn't know what
00:32:00
to do their trust has been betrayed they
00:32:03
mull it over in their mind jeez if I
00:32:05
tell my family they're going to think
00:32:07
I'm a stupid old woman if I tell my son
00:32:09
he may put me in a nursing home and all
00:32:12
these terrible thoughts go through their
00:32:13
mind in conjunction with the
00:32:15
embarrassment and the problems of losing
00:32:17
large sums of
00:32:20
money Josephine white is said to have
00:32:22
victimized more than 100 elderly men and
00:32:26
women just like
00:32:30
barara
00:32:32
update Josephine white was arrested as
00:32:35
she was running one of her
00:32:38
scams she pleaded guilty to three larsy
00:32:41
charges and was sentenced to 15 years in
00:32:45
[Music]
00:32:49
prison coming up a young man's second
00:32:52
chance at life and his search for the
00:32:55
mystery woman who's safe
00:33:06
him we recently told you about a con man
00:33:09
named Edward Chase mayard he prayed on
00:33:12
middle-aged women stealing their hearts
00:33:15
and then their
00:33:16
money I meaning business one of
00:33:18
Maynard's alleged victims was a woman
00:33:21
from Michigan she claims that he
00:33:23
romanced her and then he made off with
00:33:25
her money more than one
00:33:28
$100,000 he's got to be stopped he
00:33:31
cannot manipulate other women like he
00:33:33
did
00:33:34
me authorities were certain that mayor
00:33:37
was somewhere in the US stalking his
00:33:40
next
00:33:42
victim
00:33:44
update the night of our broadcast
00:33:47
viewers called to report that mayor had
00:33:49
recently been in Naples Florida using
00:33:52
the Alias Eric Kelly he had been
00:33:56
romantically involved with a woman will
00:33:58
call Anne and had persuaded her to lend
00:34:01
him
00:34:03
$115,000 he then disappeared with the
00:34:06
money a few months later mayor showed up
00:34:09
in San Antonio Texas using the same
00:34:13
Alias he began whining and dining yet
00:34:17
another
00:34:18
woman he kept talking about how that he
00:34:21
could really do a lot for me but of
00:34:23
course it would take a lot of money and
00:34:26
he started asking me if I had money how
00:34:28
much I had and so I started feeling very
00:34:32
strongly that something was wrong I've
00:34:35
asked you for a simple favor a loan of
00:34:39
$300 until tomorrow morning M he said I
00:34:42
need you to loan me some money and I
00:34:43
indicated that I didn't want to and at
00:34:45
that point he got very loud a violent
00:34:48
temper but I need $300 and I need it now
00:34:51
do you understand and to be very honest
00:34:54
he frightened me so I gave him the money
00:34:56
and and I did not see him again after
00:34:58
that
00:35:00
evening Barbara notified the local
00:35:02
sheriff's department about her runin
00:35:04
with Eric
00:35:06
Kelly Wednesday evening I got a phone
00:35:09
call from someone in the sheriff's
00:35:10
department he had said hey are you
00:35:12
watching Unsolved Mysteries on TV our
00:35:15
boy was just on there I said Eric Kelly
00:35:18
he said yes bigger than life I'm getting
00:35:20
ready to call the FBI and give them all
00:35:22
the information that I
00:35:24
have 4 days later another viewer tip
00:35:27
plac mayard in Houston Texas he was
00:35:30
registered in this Motel using the same
00:35:33
Alias the FBI closed in we immediately
00:35:37
dispatched a number of Agents out there
00:35:40
in fact there was up to eight agents
00:35:41
that were on the scene and within 45
00:35:43
minutes he was
00:35:45
apprehended while waiting to be brought
00:35:48
back to Wisconsin to face charges manard
00:35:51
was released on bail and promptly
00:35:53
fled when we aired the story again 3
00:35:56
years years later mayard was recaptured
00:35:59
this time in Toledo Ohio he was
00:36:02
eventually convicted of theft and was
00:36:05
sentenced to 7 and 1/2 years in
00:36:13
prison Philip Macker was a high school
00:36:16
basketball star whose life was turned
00:36:18
upside down in a split second it all
00:36:21
happened during an ordinary trip to the
00:36:25
beach
00:36:28
Virginia Beach
00:36:31
Virginia you we went to the beach a day
00:36:35
before the softball tournament try to
00:36:38
get a nice tan and Che out the babes on
00:36:40
the beach and I dove into the water with
00:36:45
my hands out forward breaking the
00:36:48
wave that was the last movement I had
00:36:52
because when I drove into the wave I uh
00:36:54
broke my neck instantly and couldn't
00:36:57
feel anything I opened up my eyes under
00:37:00
water and it was real dark and black and
00:37:03
all I heard was the ocean
00:37:07
going I didn't I didn't know why I
00:37:10
wasn't moving you know in my mind I felt
00:37:13
like I was moving my arms and swimming
00:37:16
but I wasn't getting nowhere and I just
00:37:18
kept remembering
00:37:20
that I was going to go way out into the
00:37:23
ocean I was going to be eaten by sharks
00:37:26
my life was going to be over my
00:37:28
basketball career was going to be over
00:37:31
cuz that's all I love to do is play
00:37:35
basketball the previous season Philip
00:37:37
MRE had led his high school team into
00:37:40
the state playoffs he seemed destined to
00:37:42
win a college basketball scholarship and
00:37:45
Philip's most glorious moment came
00:37:47
during a matchup with his team's arch
00:37:49
rvel with the score tied and only
00:37:52
seconds remaining Phillip stole the ball
00:37:56
by three 5 Seconds Philip for cour with
00:37:59
three dribbles to the hoop castle liard
00:38:02
at the buer it's
00:38:03
[Applause]
00:38:06
over but 8 months after that Victory
00:38:09
Philip wasn't even able to move his arms
00:38:11
or legs he was buffeted by waves not
00:38:15
knowing whether he would live or
00:38:17
die I do remember when I was underwater
00:38:21
I was saying help somebody help me help
00:38:24
I was screaming
00:38:27
from out of
00:38:29
nowhere Phillip got the help he
00:38:34
needed I saw some lady pulling Philip
00:38:37
out of the water but the only reason I
00:38:39
knew it was him was from his swimming
00:38:42
trunks that he had been wearing and when
00:38:45
I saw the swimming trunks I just
00:38:47
ran what happened
00:38:50
here step back can you your toes move
00:38:54
something I heard my sister saying
00:38:56
philli philli move something move your
00:38:58
arms move your legs and I was gasping
00:39:01
for air and I responded by
00:39:04
saying I can't I can't move
00:39:08
anything and that was
00:39:11
it what's wrong with him with everyone's
00:39:14
attention on Phillip the quiet rescuer
00:39:17
was all but forgotten she slipped away
00:39:19
before anyone could ask her
00:39:22
name I've often thought about the woman
00:39:25
that saved Phillip now I regret that I
00:39:27
didn't thank her at that time but my
00:39:30
mind and my my thoughts were just all
00:39:33
for
00:39:37
Phillip years have passed since the
00:39:39
mysterious stranger gave Phillip a
00:39:41
second shot at life his injuries have
00:39:44
forced him to redefine his goals but he
00:39:47
pursues them with the same determination
00:39:50
that he once brought to the basketball
00:39:54
court when I was in the hospital and
00:39:56
Virginia I had like three or four goals
00:40:00
first goal was to uh get off the
00:40:02
respirator my second goal was to get in
00:40:06
a wheelchair and don't be so depressed
00:40:09
knowing that you know it's all right to
00:40:10
be in a wheelchair and my last goal was
00:40:13
to go to college and get a degree and
00:40:16
get a
00:40:17
job this is Phil McCree coming from the
00:40:19
campus of Westminster College and here
00:40:21
are today's sports headlines Chicago
00:40:24
Bears of can Philip was able to return
00:40:26
to the sport that he loves this time as
00:40:29
a play-by-play
00:40:30
announcer he has made the most of his
00:40:32
gift of life but still has one very
00:40:35
important goal he would like to
00:40:38
personally thank the woman who saved
00:40:42
him it's very important to find this
00:40:45
lady who pulled me out of the water
00:40:47
because I wouldn't be able to fulfill my
00:40:49
goals of being a sports
00:40:51
broadcaster I wouldn't be able to be
00:40:54
here with my family today I wouldn't be
00:40:56
able to do the things that I always
00:40:59
wanted to do in life if she wouldn't
00:41:01
have save my
00:41:04
