Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 6, Episode 11 - Updated Full Episode

July 18, 2022 / 42:59

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers three contract killings in Tulsa, Boston, and Fort Lauderdale, the Boston Strangler case, UFO sightings in Canada, and a murder investigation in Texas.

In the Boston Strangler segment, the episode discusses Albert DeSalvo's confession to the murders of several women in the early 1960s. New DNA evidence suggests he may not have killed Mary Sullivan, the last known victim. The families of both DeSalvo and Sullivan seek justice and clarity in the case.

The episode also features a Canadian woman, Dorothy Isaac, who claims to have communicated with UFOs. She filmed strange lights in the sky and believes they are intelligent beings. Experts evaluate her footage, but skepticism remains.

In the Texas murder case, Latricia White is found shot in her home, and her boyfriend, Dub Walker Hogan, goes missing. Investigators suspect Dub of the murder, while his family believes he and his son are also victims.

Finally, the episode tells the story of Walter Rice, a reclusive man whose body went undiscovered for a year. After his death, it was revealed he had a significant fortune, but no relatives came forward to claim it.

TL;DR

This episode covers contract killings, the Boston Strangler, UFO sightings, and a mysterious murder case in Texas.

00:02:39
over the next two years eight more women
00:02:42
fell victim to the psychopath
00:02:44
all but one were choked to death in
00:02:47
their own homes their bodies posed in
00:02:49
hideous positions
00:02:51
the city was gripped by fear and
00:02:54
paranoia
00:02:57
then albert de sal facing a prison term
00:03:00
for a series of other rapes confessed
00:03:02
that he was the boston strangler
00:03:06
some believe however that disavow had
00:03:08
reason
00:03:09
to falsely confess
00:03:12
first i
00:03:14
put my arm around backwards right right
00:03:16
the first thing that albert hoped to get
00:03:19
out of
00:03:20
being known as the boston strangler was
00:03:22
the fame of it
00:03:23
because he desperately wanted to be
00:03:25
famous
00:03:26
even if it were something terrible
00:03:28
his second goal was to avoid
00:03:31
a prison sentence
00:03:33
he had apparently been convinced that if
00:03:36
he confessed to the stranglings he would
00:03:37
be sent not to prison
00:03:39
but to
00:03:41
a very fancy private institution
00:03:44
where doctors would study him
00:03:47
do you remember tying any knots in it
00:03:50
yeah many detectives were convinced that
00:03:52
he had to be the killer if he was lying
00:03:55
disalvo's confession was incredibly
00:03:58
accurate that makes two
00:04:01
if you had heard him go into detail
00:04:05
and tell you exactly how the furniture
00:04:07
was
00:04:08
and
00:04:09
what it was adjacent to and so forth
00:04:12
you know nobody could tell you that
00:04:14
unless they were there
00:04:16
[Applause]
00:04:17
after eight years of research on this
00:04:20
case
00:04:21
one thing i'm certain of and that is
00:04:23
that albert de salvo was not the boston
00:04:25
strangler
00:04:27
there are a number of very good suspects
00:04:30
none of them happen to be albert de
00:04:32
salvo
00:04:36
in november of 1973 albert de salvo
00:04:39
called his former psychiatrist from
00:04:41
prison
00:04:42
he said that now he was ready to tell
00:04:45
the truth about the boston strangler but
00:04:48
that same night de salva was murdered
00:04:51
and now dramatic new evidence suggests
00:04:54
that the salvo was not the notorious
00:04:58
serial killer

on january 4 1964
00:05:08
mary sullivan was found by her roommate
00:05:11
strangled to death and sexually
00:05:13
assaulted
00:05:14
in a final morbid gesture placed at her
00:05:17
feet was a happy new year card
00:05:22
the police collected semen left on
00:05:24
mary's body by the killer
00:05:26
but in 1964 there was no way to match it
00:05:30
to a suspect
00:05:31
albert desalvo later admitted he killed
00:05:34
mary but two families have formed a
00:05:37
surprising alliance to challenge his
00:05:40
confession
00:05:41
the family of mary sullivan
00:05:43
and the family of albert de salva
00:05:47

00:05:59
albert was not perfect albert did some
00:06:02
bad things
00:06:03
albert was not a murderer
00:06:07
mary sullivan's sister diane also
00:06:09
believes that de salvo was not the
00:06:12
killer
00:06:12

00:06:14
i
00:06:15
mainly come here to say hi to mary and
00:06:18
i'm gonna try to do my
00:06:21
what i can
00:06:22
i'm gonna do everything i can
00:06:24
to find her murderer
00:06:29
to the disalvo and sullivan families
00:06:32
there was a clear solution to the
00:06:33
controversy
00:06:35
dna profiling
00:06:37
i made several inquiries to the boston
00:06:39
police department and they told me flat
00:06:41
out that they did not have any physical
00:06:43
evidence left in the boston strangler
00:06:45
case to test for dna evidence
00:06:48
so mary sullivan's family turned to the
00:06:50
only evidence available to them
00:06:53
mary's remains
00:06:56
we had to do the examination of my
00:06:58
aunt's body
00:06:59
it was a horrible experience we didn't
00:07:01
want to do it but it was
00:07:03
our last and only recourse we thought
00:07:06
and it was the only chance to find her
00:07:08
killer
00:07:11
the sullivan's got help from a team of
00:07:13
forensic experts
00:07:17
we were obviously looking for any
00:07:19
seminal fluid
00:07:21
and we do know that seminal fluid will
00:07:23
fluoresce under uv light so we look and
00:07:27
seminal fluid for us
00:07:29
and it also was in the right location
00:07:30
for cellular fluid it's on pubic hair
00:07:35
so we examined that and went after that
00:07:37
as far as could we get any dna from it
00:07:40
we had to be extra careful because
00:07:41
obviously her hair is going to have her
00:07:42
dna in it so one of the tricky parts
00:07:45
becomes isolating dna only from this
00:07:47
material that's stuck in the pubic hair
00:07:49
and not from the hair itself
00:07:53
dr ferrand successfully isolated a dna
00:07:56
sequence and compared it to albert de
00:07:58
salvo's genes by using dna taken from
00:08:01
his brother richard
00:08:04
the results were virtually indisputable
00:08:07
the seamen was not albert de
00:08:10
salvos when he said that there was dna
00:08:14
they believed from mary's killer on her
00:08:16
body
00:08:17
and that dna didn't match albert de
00:08:19
salvo it was just complete vindication
00:08:21
as far as i was concerned for those who
00:08:23
say that albert de salvo did do it it
00:08:26
the shoe is on their foot now it's for
00:08:28
them to come forward and show the
00:08:30
evidence to prove that albert de salvo
00:08:32
did do it
00:08:34
but if disalvo did not kill mary
00:08:36
sullivan
00:08:37
then who
00:08:38
did
00:08:40
the detectives who first investigated
00:08:42
the killing found a strange piece of
00:08:44
evidence in her bathroom and it
00:08:46
implicated mary's abusive ex-boyfriend
00:08:50
they found an ascot
00:08:53
caught up in the toilet
00:08:55
when my sister dated this person that's
00:08:57
all she bought him for presents with he
00:09:00
loved ascots
00:09:02
so i could see him definitely cutting
00:09:04
that mascot up in the bathroom and i
00:09:08
could absolutely see him killing mary
00:09:12
another suspect emerged based on an
00:09:15
eyewitness account
00:09:16
a neighbor saw a man in mary's apartment
00:09:19
at the approximate time of the murder
00:09:23
mary's roommate had a boyfriend who
00:09:25
matched the neighbor's description
00:09:28
he may have had access to mary's
00:09:30
apartment explaining why there were no
00:09:32
signs of forced entry
00:09:35
what are these for they're the keys to
00:09:37
the apartment an extra set
00:09:40
i'm gonna go pat on my nose
00:09:43
her apartment key had gone missing the
00:09:44
day before she was killed now this key
00:09:46
hadn't fallen off the key chain it was
00:09:49
taken off
00:09:51
you live in vermont the suspect was
00:09:53
brought in for a polygraph test
00:09:55
according to the police his responses
00:09:58
were deemed untruthful
00:10:00
once deselvo had confessed however
00:10:02
investigations into the suspect and
00:10:04
mary's ex-boyfriend were closed
00:10:07
did you kill mary sullivan no face front
00:10:10
please
00:10:13
the police also had strong suspects in
00:10:16
several of the other murders
00:10:17
[Music]
00:10:19
if albert wasn't the boston strangler
00:10:21
who was the boston strangler
00:10:26
from what my research
00:10:28
indicates
00:10:29
there wasn't one
00:10:31
there were many
00:10:35
on june 14 1962 the strangler claimed
00:10:39
his first victim 56 year old anna
00:10:42
schlessers
00:10:45
earlier that day a painting crew was
00:10:47
working at her apartment
00:10:49
sixteen days later the same painting
00:10:52
crew arrived at the apartment building
00:10:54
of helen blake
00:10:56
she became victim number two
00:11:00
two of the members of the painting crew
00:11:02
their alibis couldn't be corroborated by
00:11:05
their boss or by their fellow workers
00:11:07
and that's an unusual connection
00:11:10
victim number seven was 23 year old
00:11:13
patricia bessette
00:11:16
in this case police also had a strong
00:11:19
suspect
00:11:20
patricia
00:11:21
patricia's boss
00:11:23
the man who discovered her body
00:11:26
detectives found out that patricia
00:11:28
bessette was having an affair with her
00:11:30
happily married boss at the time she was
00:11:32
killed
00:11:34
while i found her autopsy report it
00:11:36
shows that she was one month pregnant
00:11:38
when she was murdered
00:11:40
not only do you have motive but you have
00:11:41
a suspect there
00:11:44
but investigation of all the other
00:11:46
suspects stopped cold when albert de
00:11:48
salvo confessed
00:11:50
but many still believed the confession
00:11:53
was bogus
00:11:56
there's a possibility that some of the
00:11:59
older women
00:12:00
died at the hands of the same person
00:12:03
each of the young women
00:12:05
who died
00:12:07
was murdered by a different individual
00:12:10
who had his own motives
00:12:13
if you hated a woman back in the early
00:12:15
1960s you could kill her loosely wrap a
00:12:18
stocking around her neck and hope that
00:12:20
the police would think it was the boston
00:12:22
strangler all the grizzly details were
00:12:24
printed in the papers at the time
00:12:27
[Music]
00:12:28
if you wanted to commit a murder here
00:12:30
was your diagram
00:12:33
the sullivan family continues to hope
00:12:35
that mary's killer will one day be
00:12:38
identified and prosecuted
00:12:41
i want closure from my mother
00:12:44
my mother has had to live without any
00:12:45
answers in this case
00:12:47
we want to publicly identify mary's
00:12:49
killer look him in the eye and and tell
00:12:52
him what what he stole from us
00:12:56
when albert de selva was murdered in
00:12:58
prison the truth about the boston
00:13:00
strangler may have died with him
00:13:02
he had told his psychiatrist that he
00:13:05
would tell the real story the next day
00:13:09
but the families of some of the victims
00:13:11
are still searching for the truth
00:13:13
they do not believe that the real story
00:13:17
has ever been told
00:13:22
update
00:13:23
there are new developments in this case
00:13:25
and here's one of our staff with details
00:13:28
in 2013 albert de salvo's body was
00:13:31
exhumed recent developments in dna
00:13:34
testing have shown an indisputable link
00:13:36
of de salvo to the death of mary
00:13:37
sullivan believed to be the strangler's
00:13:40
last victim
00:13:41
authorities said that the odds that a
00:13:43
white male other than desalvo
00:13:45
contributed to the crime scene are 220
00:13:48
billion to one
00:13:50
and that this is definite proof that
00:13:52
albert desalvo was indeed the boston
00:13:54
strangler in the case of mary sullivan
00:13:58
coming up a woman claims that she
00:14:01
communicated with bizarre lights in the
00:14:04
canadian sky
00:14:05
could they be
00:14:07
ufos
00:14:18
vancouver british columbia
00:14:21
for many years this city has had a high
00:14:23
number of ufo sightings
00:14:27
the most frequent and well documented
00:14:29
have been attributed to one woman
00:14:33
i had a sensation that something was
00:14:35
watching me
00:14:37
so i went over to the window and here
00:14:39
was this enormous object sitting up in
00:14:42
the sky
00:14:43
it was so beautiful to look at
00:14:47
i wasn't afraid at all you know i was i
00:14:49
felt really privileged to be able to see
00:14:51
something like that
00:14:53
dorothy's husband and children did not
00:14:55
take her seriously she was determined to
00:14:58
prove that what she had seen was not
00:15:00
simply a star or an airplane
00:15:05
i said i must find some way of
00:15:07
communicating with this thing up there
00:15:10
so i picked up a flashlight and flashed
00:15:12
the light three times to the left and
00:15:15
this object went three times to the left
00:15:19
then i flushed it three times to the
00:15:20
right and the object went three times to
00:15:22
the right
00:15:23
so i say i'm not imagining this i said
00:15:24
this is really happening so it's
00:15:26
intelligent
00:15:29
dorothy decided to try to capture the
00:15:31
ufos and film
00:15:33
the results were startling
00:15:36
what i saw in the sky was just round
00:15:38
objects of light
00:15:40
round balls of light
00:15:43
but what was on the film
00:15:45
you see the balls of light but after a
00:15:47
couple of frames there will be this
00:15:49
enormous blast of light
00:15:52
dorothy moved the film back and forth
00:15:54
until she isolated a single bright frame
00:15:58
but what had first appeared to be a
00:16:00
simple flash of light was actually a
00:16:02
maze of colored streaks
00:16:05
strangely the light did not spill over
00:16:08
onto any other frames
00:16:11
i noticed that
00:16:12
while i'm filming these objects they'll
00:16:15
suddenly stop and then i'll notice one
00:16:17
object like
00:16:19
shooting out a little beam at the other
00:16:21
object and and that object was shooting
00:16:23
a little beam back at it and sort of i
00:16:25
guess it must be messages or something
00:16:27
that they're passing back and forth on
00:16:28
these beams of light
00:16:30
dorothy had the single frames of film
00:16:32
blown up into photographs
00:16:35
bright kinetic beams shot out in all
00:16:37
directions she also blew up frames of
00:16:40
the mysterious balls of light
00:16:43
these photographs began to show more and
00:16:46
more
00:16:47
amazing details
00:16:49
sometimes they'll beam the light down at
00:16:51
me
00:16:52
and i'll be all lit up with this light
00:16:57
i used to ask them to come closer and
00:16:58
closer because i wanted better shots
00:17:01
and they did you know like come closer
00:17:02
and closer
00:17:05
i don't think she's lying about what
00:17:07
she's doing i feel that she's quite
00:17:10
sincere
00:17:11
on the other hand i'm not able to assess
00:17:14
her her photographs professionally
00:17:16
because that's not part of my
00:17:18
expertise
00:17:20
but
00:17:21
her personality makeup would make me
00:17:23
believe that she's not making things up
00:17:26
bottom line
00:17:28
what is the truth about dorothy's
00:17:30
photographs
00:17:32
[Music]
00:17:35
like as in most ufo cases dorothy's
00:17:38
sightings and her photographs seem to
00:17:40
defy conventional logic she says that
00:17:43
she used three different cameras and
00:17:45
each one yielded similar results we
00:17:48
asked the photography expert to evaluate
00:17:51
dorothy's film
00:17:54
i have seen several similar examples of
00:17:56
photography like this
00:17:58
light sources in the sky with dark
00:18:01
backgrounds are quite easy to manipulate
00:18:04
but these are more extraordinary in the
00:18:06
sense that they were done with a eight
00:18:08
millimeter camera a motion picture
00:18:10
camera rather than a still camera and
00:18:12
they have so many different types of
00:18:14
effects
00:18:18
dorothy isaac became well known in the
00:18:21
ufo community
00:18:22
one day a businessman named jerry mackay
00:18:25
came to visit hoping to learn more about
00:18:28
her sightings
00:18:31
these are like daytime type shots
00:18:34
try and get some pictures in the daytime
00:18:35
as well and that's where i got these i
00:18:37
was listening very intently to what she
00:18:39
was saying at which time i noticed that
00:18:42
i was hearing some kind of audible
00:18:44
sensing thing that was happening only in
00:18:47
my right ear so that they know it's
00:18:48
solid and it's not just uh excuse me
00:18:50
dorothy i i don't mean to interrupt you
00:18:52
but i'm getting a strange sensation in
00:18:54
my ear here you can hear that
00:18:56
and i looked at her and i said yes i can
00:18:58
what is it
00:19:00
and this brilliant beam of
00:19:03
smile went from ear to ear on her face
00:19:06
and i remember the look that she gave me
00:19:08
and she said
00:19:10
they're here
00:19:13
jerry mackay was the first person to say
00:19:15
that he actually heard the same thing
00:19:18
that dorthy heard
00:19:20
to my complete shock and amazement
00:19:24
what appeared to be sitting right out in
00:19:26
front of the window just to our left
00:19:28
was a hard metallic object
00:19:33
and as soon as it disappeared dorothy
00:19:35
let out a giggle that
00:19:37
was like there you go
00:19:40
what do you think of that
00:19:42
jerry commissioned an artist to draw
00:19:44
what he and dorothy had seen
00:19:48
i feel there is some sort of message in
00:19:50
there for us
00:19:51
they're trying to tell us something from
00:19:53
these pictures
00:19:55
my mission is to
00:19:57
just keep filming i guess and receiving
00:20:00
these pictures for as long as i am able
00:20:03
to
00:20:04
and hope that one day someone somewhere
00:20:07
will be able to understand what it's all
00:20:09
about
00:20:17
next
00:20:18
in tulsa oklahoma a wealthy businessman
00:20:21
is gunned down in the parking lot of
00:20:22
this country club
00:20:24
why are authorities calling it the
00:20:26
highlight hit
00:20:37
our next story is about three murders in
00:20:39
three different cities thousands of
00:20:41
miles apart
00:20:43
most would say they were unrelated but
00:20:45
authorities were convinced that the
00:20:47
killings were all connected to gambling
00:20:50
on the sport
00:20:51
of highline
00:20:55
in the early 80s highlight was big
00:20:57
business and big betting
00:21:00
now played only in florida it was once
00:21:02
legal in four states where 700 million
00:21:05
dollars was bet on the sport each year
00:21:09
three years before his death oklahoma
00:21:11
businessman roger wheeler purchased
00:21:14
world highlight which operated arenas in
00:21:17
florida and connecticut
00:21:19
on a spring afternoon two men drove into
00:21:22
the southern hills country club parked
00:21:24
near wheeler's cadillac and waited for
00:21:26
him to finish his golf game
00:21:32
my father never expressed concern to me
00:21:34
that
00:21:35
his life might be in danger
00:21:40
i've often wondered what he might have
00:21:42
known if anything but
00:21:44
no one knows
00:21:45
if there was any words said at all
00:21:51
one of the men walked up to wheeler's
00:21:52
car and shot him point blank in the face
00:21:56
witnesses said the assailant concealed
00:21:58
his handgun in a towel and paper bag as
00:22:00
he calmly walked across the parking lot
00:22:04
[Applause]
00:22:08
at the crime scene detectives found four
00:22:11
unspent bullets from the killer's gun
00:22:13
near wheeler's body
00:22:15
they may have been left behind as a
00:22:17
signature or a warning from wheeler's
00:22:20
killers
00:22:22
i feel the people that murdered my
00:22:24
father
00:22:25
are obviously very intelligent
00:22:27
they're very cunning
00:22:29
very calculating
00:22:31
the one thing that they cannot stand
00:22:33
is publicity
00:22:35
they cannot stand the pressure of people
00:22:37
knowing
00:22:39
who they are and what they are
00:22:41
and the thought that somebody
00:22:44
might talk
00:22:47
a year later a second execution-style
00:22:50
murder this time in boston
00:22:52
the target was brian halloran a reputed
00:22:55
underworld figure
00:22:57
before he died halloran told the fbi
00:23:00
that he had been offered the contract on
00:23:03
roger wheeler but he had turned it
00:23:06
down claimed that a man named john
00:23:09
callahan ordered the hit on wheeler
00:23:12
callahan had been the president of world
00:23:15
highlight before it was purchased by
00:23:17
wheeler however callahan was forced to
00:23:20
resign because of reported links to
00:23:22
organized crime
00:23:24
callahan indicated that he was going to
00:23:27
lose a lot of money
00:23:29
if wheeler wasn't eliminated
00:23:32
implying that he still had some
00:23:34
connection to highline
00:23:37
one evening brian halloran and a friend
00:23:40
left the boston restaurant for a six
00:23:41
o'clock meeting
00:23:44
outside three men waited in a
00:23:46
dark-colored sedan
00:23:55
[Music]
00:23:57
the driver of the car was killed
00:23:59
instantly
00:24:01
the car rolled across the street and
00:24:03
halloran still alive tried to make it
00:24:06
back to the restaurant
00:24:15
brian halleran had substantial
00:24:16
information
00:24:18
truthful information
00:24:20
that
00:24:21
was in line with the way mr wheeler was
00:24:24
killed
00:24:25
it's too big of a coincidence
00:24:27
to lay it off as only a coincidence we
00:24:30
feel that the two are definitely
00:24:32
connected
00:24:36
south florida three months later
00:24:39
john callahan flew to fort lauderdale
00:24:42
though he lived in boston he kept a
00:24:44
condominium and at least cadillac in the
00:24:46
area
00:24:48
eight hours after he arrived callahan's
00:24:51
car was parked at the miami airport
00:24:54
three days later a foul odor coming from
00:24:57
the trunk caused the parking attendant
00:24:59
to call the police
00:25:03
inside the trunk
00:25:04
was callahan's body
00:25:07
by no means wasn't an amateur job it was
00:25:09
extremely professional
00:25:12
it's very easy for these people to
00:25:13
commit murder and get away with it they
00:25:15
know every step of the way what they're
00:25:17
going to do how they're going to do it
00:25:20
it just becomes second nature to them
00:25:22
they do it and they walk away no
00:25:23
problems
00:25:26
callahan died of multiple gunshot wounds
00:25:29
his car had been washed vacuumed and
00:25:31
wiped clean so the only evidence on the
00:25:34
scene was the body itself and several
00:25:36
unspent bullets found in the trunk
00:25:42
it is our belief that all three
00:25:44
homicides are connected the homicide of
00:25:46
mr wheeler in tulsa the homicide of mr
00:25:49
howler in boston and the homicide of mr
00:25:51
callahan here in miami
00:25:53
there are little bits and pieces of
00:25:55
information evidence that linked the
00:25:57
three together and it all seems to tie
00:26:00
back to their dealings with world
00:26:02
highlight
00:26:04
john callahan had been forced to resign
00:26:06
as president the world highlight because
00:26:08
of his links to known underworld figures
00:26:13
roger wheeler purchased the company two
00:26:15
years later
00:26:17
at the time he received a letter warning
00:26:19
him
00:26:21
if you knew what was going on behind the
00:26:22
scenes you would not be involved if i
00:26:26
were you i would get out quick
00:26:30
wheeler
00:26:31
ignored that warning
00:26:34
when my father was shot one of his
00:26:36
friends said this type of murder is
00:26:38
never solved and i just can't accept
00:26:40
that
00:26:42
i cannot bury my father until his
00:26:45
killers are brought to justice
00:26:47
all i would take
00:26:50
is just one person to come forward
00:26:54
with a little bit more information
00:26:57
and we can break this case
00:26:58
[Music]
00:27:02
update
00:27:04
there have been several important
00:27:06
developments in this case
00:27:08
a government informant identified john
00:27:11
vincent martirano as a suspect martino
00:27:15
pleaded guilty to being the trigger man
00:27:16
in the killing of both roger mueller and
00:27:19
john callahan
00:27:21
john martirano ultimately pleaded guilty
00:27:24
to ten murders but because he helped the
00:27:26
fbi prosecute other mafia members
00:27:29
he was given a reduced sentence he was
00:27:32
released from prison after serving only
00:27:35
12 years
00:27:38
[Applause]
00:27:40
two leaders of boston's winter hill gang
00:27:44
james whitey bulger
00:27:46
and stephen the rifleman flemmi were
00:27:49
also charged in the wheeler and callahan
00:27:51
hits
00:27:52
in addition a former fbi agent named
00:27:56
paul rico was linked to the wheeler
00:27:58
killing case but died before he could be
00:28:01
put on trial flemmi is in prison for
00:28:04
life
00:28:05
bulger was also wanted in the murder of
00:28:08
brian halloran
00:28:10
and since we broadcast this case after
00:28:12
years on the run james whitey bulger has
00:28:16
been captured he was later convicted and
00:28:19
sent to prison
00:28:21
[Music]
00:28:24
next a texas man accused of killing his
00:28:27
girlfriend
00:28:28
takes off with his nine-year-old son
00:28:41
lockhart texas
00:28:45
jack white is worried when he arrives at
00:28:48
his daughter's house
00:28:49
[Music]
00:28:51
latricia white a 38 year old nurse
00:28:54
hasn't been seen or hurt from in almost
00:28:57
24 hours
00:28:58
[Music]
00:29:01
everyone was concerned about electrician
00:29:03
because
00:29:04
she just hadn't gone to work monday
00:29:07
and she never
00:29:10
never fails to go to work
00:29:12
or at least call
00:29:17
fresh
00:29:18
i just called her and then then i went
00:29:20
over and felt her
00:29:24
i knew that she was dead
00:29:27
[Music]
00:29:28
latricia white had been shot six times
00:29:31
in the head with a 22-caliber weapon
00:29:34
her death stunned her friends and
00:29:36
neighbors she left behind two children
00:29:39
and a lot of unanswered questions
00:29:46
investigators were puzzled
00:29:48
despite the violent nature of the crime
00:29:50
there were no signs of a struggle and
00:29:52
nothing in her house had been disturbed
00:29:55
got some blood here looks like it's
00:29:56
going into the kitchen area paul just as
00:29:58
puzzling was the disappearance of
00:30:00
latricia's live-in boyfriend lee walker
00:30:03
hogan a local trucker nicknamed dub
00:30:07
also missing was dub's nine-year-old son
00:30:10
chance who had been visiting for the
00:30:13
holidays
00:30:15
the fact that her boyfriend dub walker
00:30:18
hagin could not be found led us to
00:30:20
to several different areas to
00:30:22
investigate number one
00:30:24
uh is he a suspect
00:30:27
could he have committed this crime the
00:30:29
other one is or is he a victim
00:30:32
has he also been injured
00:30:37
three days later dubs pickup truck was
00:30:39
found abandoned in austin texas about 30
00:30:42
miles from the crime scene
00:30:44
in the truck investigators found dub's
00:30:47
hunting rifle which had not been fired
00:30:49
his checkbook and his wallet
00:30:52
in back a toolbox a spare tire and
00:30:55
christmas gifts still unopened but all
00:30:58
streaked
00:30:59
with blood
00:31:02
initially in the investigation we felt
00:31:04
that this blood could have come from our
00:31:06
victim that was later ruled out
00:31:08
the blood type was not the same as our
00:31:10
victims so we feel like that someone
00:31:12
else was injured
00:31:15
not seriously but someone else was
00:31:17
injured
00:31:17
[Music]
00:31:19
could that someone else have been dub or
00:31:21
chance
00:31:22
the question could not be answered all
00:31:25
of the blood tests were inconclusive
00:31:27
[Music]
00:31:30
the police and the white family believe
00:31:33
that dub murdered latricia in a jealous
00:31:36
rage
00:31:36
but dubb's family and friends are
00:31:38
convinced that he and chance
00:31:41
also met with foul play
00:31:46
it's been
00:31:48
going on 11 months now and we haven't
00:31:50
heard anything from him at all and that
00:31:53
tells me if if we haven't heard from him
00:31:55
then he's got to be dead
00:31:59
i don't know who did it
00:32:01
i just know that he
00:32:02
that he couldn't have couldn't have done
00:32:04
it
00:32:05
and then just disappeared off the face
00:32:07
of the earth
00:32:10
to the police however dub was the
00:32:13
obvious suspect especially after they
00:32:15
began to take a close look at his
00:32:17
relationship with latricia hi guys hi
00:32:20
trish
00:32:22
who the hell were you last night
00:32:24
according to latricia's family double
00:32:26
was extremely jealous
00:32:28
and suspicious i wish that in the future
00:32:31
if you're gonna be late would you please
00:32:32
give me a call let me know or try to be
00:32:34
home on time
00:32:37
i saw that he was a good man when i met
00:32:39
him and when i left him i was scared to
00:32:41
death of him
00:32:43
he had a temper
00:32:45
he treated my oldest boy terribly
00:32:47
and i was scared
00:32:51
dub son chance was often the focus of
00:32:54
their arguments he's only nine years old
00:32:56
what do you expect excuse me chance it's
00:32:59
not your fault your father raised you to
00:33:01
be a spoiled brat brat he's my son he's
00:33:04
not yours and you have no right you
00:33:06
understand me well it's my house
00:33:10
dub packed his bags and threatened to
00:33:12
leave i'm tired of your threats you
00:33:14
don't have the guts to leave
00:33:18
just three nights later dub chance and
00:33:20
latricia were seen enjoying themselves
00:33:23
at a local restaurant the incident was
00:33:26
apparently forgotten
00:33:28
but late the very next day latricia's
00:33:31
father found her shot to death in her
00:33:33
bedroom
00:33:35
dub and chance
00:33:36
had disappeared
00:33:39
three days later dub was formally
00:33:41
charged with first-degree murder
00:33:45
four months passed with no sign of dub
00:33:48
or chance
00:33:50
and then at the house of chance's
00:33:53
maternal grandfather
00:33:58
all he said was help me
00:34:00
and then the phone was jerked out of his
00:34:02
hand
00:34:04
slammed down
00:34:06
and
00:34:07
i looked over my wife and i said that
00:34:09
was chance
00:34:12
could the plea for help actually have
00:34:14
been from chance
00:34:16
dubb's family is convinced that the
00:34:18
answer is no
00:34:20
they believed that the phone call was a
00:34:22
hoax and that dub and chance were
00:34:24
murdered
00:34:25
patricia's family and the police believe
00:34:28
that dub is a killer and that he is
00:34:30
still very much alive
00:34:35
update
00:34:37
there are new developments in this case
00:34:39
and here's one of our staff with details
00:34:42
the texas state department of public
00:34:44
safety announced recently that
00:34:46
investigators now have evidence that dub
00:34:48
walker hogan and his son chance were
00:34:51
also victims of foul play
00:34:54
it is now believed that this was a crime
00:34:56
of passion by someone closely associated
00:34:58
with the family
00:35:00
we will bring you more information as
00:35:02
the investigation proceeds

00:35:40
walter rice lived alone in a modest
00:35:42
trailer he was a reclusive man no one
00:35:45
came calling and he liked it that way
00:35:50
walter rice was quite a mystery man
00:35:53
he kept to himself he didn't he didn't
00:35:55
have anything to do with his neighbors
00:35:57
he never ventured out to meet any of his
00:35:59
neighbors
00:36:02
walter took a cab home one day after his
00:36:05
own car had been wrecked in a traffic
00:36:06
accident
00:36:07
[Music]
00:36:10
sometime during the next week he
00:36:12
suffered a heart attack and died before
00:36:14
he could call for help
00:36:19
incredibly a full year passed before
00:36:22
walter's body was even discovered
00:36:25
the power company and the cable tv
00:36:27
company turned off service to his
00:36:29
trailer
00:36:30
eventually the post office stamped his
00:36:33
mail returned to sender
00:36:35
it was two strangers who finally found
00:36:38
walters body
00:36:39
two strangers who weren't exactly making
00:36:42
a social call
00:36:45
two people
00:36:46
attempted to break into the trailer
00:36:48
they broke in the front window
00:36:51
and then went around to the back door
00:36:53
and his body was laying right at the
00:36:55
back door
00:36:56
they were frightened away after finding
00:36:57
his body and sometime later this could
00:37:00
be a month or two later they got a
00:37:03
girlfriend of one of the people who
00:37:04
attempted to break in to call
00:37:07
the police department to notify them
00:37:08
that there was a dead body in the trail
00:37:10
on oak street
00:37:14
walter rice was 73 when he passed away
00:37:18
probate judge ronnie kidd took on the
00:37:20
task of sorting through his possessions
00:37:23
i started looking through his papers all
00:37:26
of his effects in his trailer
00:37:29
initially i didn't expect to find any
00:37:31
anything of value but after searching
00:37:33
through walter rice's
00:37:35
personal effects papers bank papers i
00:37:38
found him to have an estate of
00:37:39
approximately a hundred and forty
00:37:41
thousand dollars
00:37:44
one hundred and forty thousand dollars
00:37:47
the judge began to piece together the
00:37:50
few known facts of walter's life
00:37:53
paystubs showed that for 10 years he
00:37:55
worked as a cook at the griswold inn
00:37:58
near essex connecticut
00:38:01
walter rice also had a passport it
00:38:04
stamped with visas from curacao jamaica
00:38:06
belize trinidad and tobago guyana and
00:38:10
guatemala but nothing is known about
00:38:12
walter's travels outside of the united
00:38:14
states
00:38:18
[Music]
00:38:22
after three years of searching no errors
00:38:25
were found and walter rice's assets were
00:38:28
liquidated the money went to the state
00:38:30
of south carolina
00:38:32
if there had been any surviving
00:38:34
relatives they waited too long to make a
00:38:36
claim
00:38:37
but
00:38:38
if any of them is watching
00:38:40
at least they'll know what happened
00:38:42
to mr walter rice

00:38:49
on a recent broadcast we profiled a
00:38:52
fugitive named jim burnside
00:38:56
he was wanted for the vicious murder of
00:38:58
his wife annette shoplocker
00:39:03
you getting off work now
00:39:04
yeah i'm gonna go home in a few minutes
00:39:06
it didn't look like trouble at the start
00:39:08
they worked together at a grocery store
00:39:10
she was a checker and he was a butcher
00:39:13
however
00:39:14
she was only 18 years old when she
00:39:16
married jim
00:39:19
when the honeymoon ended
00:39:21
the abuse began
00:39:23
she became afraid of him almost
00:39:26
immediately because he was jealous of
00:39:29
her and he started telling her right
00:39:31
from the beginning that he would kill
00:39:32
her if she ever tried to leave him
00:39:35
it took five years but annette finally
00:39:38
worked up the courage to walk out
00:39:42
two months later jim bernstein struck
00:39:45
back
00:39:48
he found the net
00:39:50
alone
00:39:51
with one of her co-workers
00:39:53
hey
00:39:54
get over here what are you doing
00:40:07
[Applause]
00:40:08
and that's co-worker survived the attack
00:40:11
annette
00:40:13
died at the scene
00:40:15
she had been stabbed 15 times with a
00:40:18
butcher knife
00:40:22
by that afternoon burnside was on the
00:40:24
run
00:40:26
it's bad enough knowing that annette had
00:40:29
to die but to know that he is still out
00:40:32
there
00:40:33
it's horrible
00:40:35
we just want him
00:40:36
caught update
00:40:39
the night this story aired we received
00:40:41
calls from two viewers from shelby
00:40:44
county alabama
00:40:45
they recognized jim burnside but they
00:40:48
knew him as al wilson
00:40:51
when i saw his actual picture
00:40:53
i just looked at my husband and i just
00:40:55
started pointing and i'm going
00:40:57
you know tell me my eyes aren't
00:40:59
deceiving me you know that is al
00:41:02
and he goes yes that's al
00:41:04
the next morning fbi agents and
00:41:07
sheriff's deputies converged on a flea
00:41:09
market where burnside worked
00:41:13
when burnside saw them he took off
00:41:22
the fugitive pulled out a gun
00:41:24
and took aim down
00:41:32
[Music]
00:41:36
was shot twice
00:41:37
he was arrested
00:41:39
and then hospitalized
00:41:41
from what we've been able to determine
00:41:44
talking to his co-workers that he had
00:41:45
made a statement on thursday morning
00:41:48
that he had anticipated having problems
00:41:50
that day so apparently he had viewed the
00:41:53
unsolved mysteries himself wednesday
00:41:55
night
00:41:56
james burnside recovered from his wounds
00:41:58
he pleaded no contest to first-degree
00:42:00
murder and attempted first-degree murder
