Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 1, Episode 7 - Full Episode

March 09, 2017 / 42:54

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the mysterious death of drug runner Wallace Thrasher, the discovery of a mummified remains in Wyoming, and the unsolved murder of Martha Moxley.

Wallace Thrasher, known as the "squirrel," was a drug pilot who died in a plane crash in Virginia. Authorities suspect he faked his death to escape law enforcement. His wife produced a fraudulent death certificate, claiming he died in Jamaica, but investigators found no evidence to support this. Thrasher's associates believe he may still be alive.

In Wyoming, two prospectors discovered a tiny mummified body in a cave, sparking debates about its origins. Some speculate it could be evidence of a new species of miniature humans, while others believe it was an anencephalic infant. The mummy's fate remains uncertain, with calls for further scientific analysis.

The episode also revisits the unsolved murder of Martha Moxley, a teenager found dead in Connecticut. Investigators focus on the Skakel family, who have connections to the Kennedy family. Despite various suspects and evidence, the case remains unresolved, though new information has emerged implicating Michael Skakel.

Finally, an update on Clayton Wagner, a violent fugitive who was captured after escaping from prison and committing further crimes.

TL;DR

Wallace Thrasher's suspicious death, a tiny mummy discovery, and Martha Moxley's murder are featured in this episode of Unsolved Mysteries.

00:01:25
we're in Western Virginia's remote
00:01:27
Mountain Wilderness
00:01:30
state troopers arrive on the scene of a
00:01:32
small airplane crash still strapped in
00:01:35
the cockpit is a body charred beyond
00:01:39
recognition but it's the plane's cargo
00:01:42
that catches the attention of
00:01:45
police 1,200 lb of high-grade marijuana
00:01:49
worth more than $1
00:01:52
million for authorities the crash was
00:01:55
something of a godsend eventually they
00:01:58
would connect both the plane and the
00:02:01
dead pilot to Wallace Thrasher of Bland
00:02:04
County Virginia back in high school he
00:02:08
was your allaround kid a member of the
00:02:11
Key Club and Latin club Thrashers seemed
00:02:13
to be going somewhere he played on the
00:02:15
football team and earned the nickname
00:02:18
squirrel for his ability to outrun
00:02:21
trouble Thrasher didn't seem the type to
00:02:23
end up pedling drugs but somewhere along
00:02:26
the way his life took a wrong turn and
00:02:29
while his buddies claim that Thrasher
00:02:31
died in Central America authorities
00:02:34
suspect the squirrel is very much alive
00:02:37
and once again on the
00:02:43
Run Thrasher built an organization that
00:02:46
flew tons of marijuana and cocaine into
00:02:48
the western region of
00:02:53
Virginia Distributors then smuggled the
00:02:55
drugs north to Chicago Detroit and other
00:02:59
big cities
00:03:02
Thrasher often piloted the plane himself
00:03:04
and to many of his neighbors he was kind
00:03:06
of a local hero here in Western Virginia
00:03:10
dope Pilots are the modern day
00:03:11
Moonshiners takes the same kind of
00:03:14
talents to uh to smuggle dope in by air
00:03:17
as it does to run a load of moonshine he
00:03:19
was tight person he wasn't afraid to let
00:03:22
everybody know what he was doing
00:03:23
basically everybody had contact with him
00:03:25
at the airport and the areas where he
00:03:28
was doing his drug business knew he was
00:03:29
trying transporting
00:03:33
drugs Thrasher used the drug money to
00:03:35
live the good life he and his wife owned
00:03:38
a 10 acre country estate and bassed in
00:03:41
opulence and luxury w-e uh Thrasher was
00:03:46
uh a very Charming fellow uh very
00:03:48
generous to his associates and the
00:03:50
people who lived around him he spent
00:03:53
money very freely so they're a great
00:03:55
many people will tell you kind things
00:03:57
about him
00:03:59
for 10 years the squirrel stayed two
00:04:01
steps ahead of the
00:04:03
law until the night one of his Pilots
00:04:06
slammed an airplane full of marijuana
00:04:08
into a mountain
00:04:09
[Music]
00:04:11
side after two painstaking weeks
00:04:14
investigators could finally prove that
00:04:16
Thrasher owned the plane detectives were
00:04:19
planning to move in but then this
00:04:21
article appeared in the local newspaper
00:04:24
it said that Wallace had died in another
00:04:26
plane crash this one in Jamaica
00:04:29
Virginia authorities tried to interview
00:04:32
Thrasher's grieving Widow now I'm afraid
00:04:34
now is not a good
00:04:35
time Mrs Thrasher remained in seclusion
00:04:39
but produced a death certificate
00:04:41
documenting her husband's fatal crash in
00:04:45
Jamaica the investigation revealed that
00:04:47
uh the death certificate was
00:04:50
fraudulent there was no evidence from
00:04:53
any Witnesses or
00:04:55
anyone in Jamaica that knew of any such
00:04:59
crash
00:05:02
the police were sure that Thrasher was
00:05:04
still alive they filed charges against
00:05:07
him eventually his wife agreed to tell
00:05:10
investigators all she
00:05:14
knew talking about the crash in Virginia
00:05:17
she told them there had been a second
00:05:19
pilot on board the
00:05:21
aircraft the pilot was injured badly
00:05:24
even so he dragged himself to a pay
00:05:27
phone Thrasher picked him up at the very
00:05:29
every moment police were racing to the
00:05:32
crash
00:05:33
scene Thrasher knew that the plane would
00:05:36
be traced back to him what happen we
00:05:37
were trying to come in low under the
00:05:38
cloud cover it was just a matter of time
00:05:41
before the authorities would be knocking
00:05:43
at his door I think we got real problems
00:05:45
threr took the injured pilot to an out
00:05:47
ofate hospital then dropped from
00:05:51
sight but his wife continued to talk she
00:05:56
said her husband then stuffed a quarter
00:05:58
of a million dollars in cash into a
00:06:00
travel bag and left Virginia for B in
00:06:03
Central
00:06:05
America she thought her husband would
00:06:07
buy a load of marijuana and returned to
00:06:08
the United States but some think that
00:06:11
the squirrel never intended to come home
00:06:14
and that the
00:06:15
$250,000 was a down payment on a new
00:06:21
life hello about a week later uh Mrs
00:06:25
Thrasher received a call from two of
00:06:27
their Confederates down in bise at
00:06:29
advising her that Mr Thrasher had been
00:06:31
killed on takeoff in a in a massive
00:06:33
crash my
00:06:35
God the fire had been so intense that
00:06:37
literally the plane was burned down to
00:06:39
the outline of a plane on the ground and
00:06:41
that there would be very little for for
00:06:43
them to send back and no reason for her
00:06:44
to come down Thrasher's wife finally
00:06:47
owned up that she bought a fake death
00:06:50
certificate and she concocted the tale
00:06:52
of a Jamaican plane crash she was
00:06:55
worried that her property would be
00:06:57
confiscated if authorities found out her
00:06:59
husband was on a drug run when he
00:07:02
died I did get some proof though and
00:07:04
then one of thrash's former Associates
00:07:06
showed up he had something he claimed
00:07:08
was recovered in the crash Wallace
00:07:11
Thrashers wedding ring I got that from
00:07:13
one of the guys that was there when he
00:07:16
crashed the ring was in perfect
00:07:18
condition the inscription as sharp as
00:07:20
the day it had been
00:07:22
engraved Mrs Thrasher did advise me it
00:07:24
was definitely Wally Thrasher's wedding
00:07:26
ring we find it kind of tough to believe
00:07:29
that an air craft could cause that
00:07:30
amount of Destruction to the point where
00:07:31
literally the the uh substructure of the
00:07:34
plane was melted and the p and the uh
00:07:36
ring itself would still uh be in that
00:07:38
kind of
00:07:41
condition did Thrasher really die in a
00:07:44
fiery crash in the jungles of Central
00:07:47
America or did the squirrel once again
00:07:51
bash to freedom I think that uh at the
00:07:54
time that Mr Thrasher disappeared he was
00:07:56
facing a lot of different problems and
00:07:58
it may have been an opportune for him to
00:08:00
as they say exit stage
00:08:04
left this is what Wallace Thrasher look
00:08:07
like when he was 36 he has blue eyes and
00:08:10
athletic build and stands 5' 10 in tall

00:08:24
in a Wyoming cave proof of an extinct
00:08:27
human species and now next after
00:08:30
escaping from a prison a violent
00:08:32
criminal is brought to
00:08:40
Justice we recently told you the story
00:08:43
of Clayton Wagner on the back roads of
00:08:46
Kentucky Wagner LED police on a
00:08:48
highspeed chase after he and a buddy
00:08:51
robbed the gas station the chase ended
00:08:54
when the two suspects took off on foot
00:08:57
police captured one of the men but
00:08:59
Clayton Wagner Got Away authorities were
00:09:02
shocked by what they found in Wagner's
00:09:05
truck in the vehicle was gas cans half
00:09:09
filled with gasoline a dummy hand
00:09:12
grenade and
00:09:14
firearms and a list of uh abortion
00:09:17
clinics Clayton Wagner is a very complex
00:09:20
and intelligent individual he's an car
00:09:24
thief he's an armed robber and at some
00:09:26
point in his life uh uh Clayton Wagner
00:09:29
became involved in the anti-abortion
00:09:33
movement the papers that were found in
00:09:35
Wagner's truck read like a hit list of
00:09:38
abortion clinics and their employees
00:09:41
police feared that if he wasn't caught
00:09:43
he would start on a killing
00:09:47
spre Wagner lived life on the run in a
00:09:50
motor home with his wife and eight
00:09:53
children but his luck ran out when the
00:09:55
motor home broke down in Illinois when a
00:09:58
licensed plate check was done it
00:10:01
revealed that the motor home was stolen
00:10:03
this thing was stolen no I Wagner
00:10:06
immediately volunteered that the vehicle
00:10:08
was stolen that he was wanted and he did
00:10:11
not want his family to get involved
00:10:13
Wagner was arrested and convicted of
00:10:15
federal weapons charges and auto theft
00:10:18
and sentenced to 27 years and 3 months
00:10:21
in
00:10:23
prison Wagner had no intention of
00:10:26
remaining Behind Bars
00:10:29
lucky for him he was put in a cell that
00:10:32
had an access door for plumbing police
00:10:35
say that he picked the lock on the door
00:10:37
squeezed through the small opening into
00:10:39
a crawl space got on the roof and was
00:10:43
gone 2 months after his Escape Wagner
00:10:46
robbed a bank in Pennsylvania and stayed
00:10:49
one step ahead of the
00:10:51
police
00:10:53
update Clayton Wagner has been captured
00:10:56
by the US Marshals in Cincinnati early
00:10:58
on US Marshals had made a decision to
00:11:01
post a Wagner wanted poster in every
00:11:03
kingko store in the United States we
00:11:06
knew that he was frequenting the kingko
00:11:08
stores and uh he walked into a Kinko
00:11:11
store on December 5th and began to work
00:11:14
on a computer there an alert employee
00:11:17
spotted Wagner and made the call to the
00:11:20
marshals Wagner was arrested without
00:11:23
incident he later pled guilty to
00:11:26
possession of a firearm by a felon and
00:11:28
Interstate trans transportation of a
00:11:30
stolen vehicle he is currently serving a

00:11:50
the bones are proof that a new species

[Music]
00:12:19
mystery for Generations several Native
00:12:22
American tribes have told stories of a
00:12:25
race of supernatural beings able to
00:12:28
perform feets of amazing physical
00:12:31
strength according to Legend these
00:12:34
people stood less than 2T high for
00:12:37
centuries few believe that these little
00:12:39
people actually
00:12:43
existed but all of that changed in
00:12:46
1932 when two Prospectors Cecil M and
00:12:50
Frank Carr explored a cave in wyomings
00:12:53
Pedro mountains what's that what right
00:12:57
here on a rocky ledge they found a small
00:12:59
figure just 6 in high mummified in a
00:13:03
sitting position they' never seen
00:13:05
anything like that before and would have
00:13:07
no idea what it was except that they
00:13:09
knew it was probably worth taking
00:13:13
out several days later Cecil M returned
00:13:16
to the cave alone and snatched the
00:13:19
mysterious
00:13:21
money the discovery made headlines it
00:13:24
prompted people to speculate that it had
00:13:26
been placed in the cave by one of the na
00:13:29
Native American tribes many believe the
00:13:32
mummy was cursed that whoever possessed
00:13:34
it would die a mysterious death but such
00:13:36
rumors didn't really concern Cecil
00:13:39
M he wanted to sell
00:13:42
it in 1934 an insurance salesman named
00:13:46
Homer Cheryl bought the mummy for a
00:13:49
grand total of
00:13:50
$25 and took it on the roof whyoming two
00:13:54
bits one of the first people who paid to
00:13:56
see it was a curious 10-year-old boy
00:13:59
named Eugene bash mummies of course
00:14:02
you'll see it you will have a great mmy
00:14:05
what I remember most about that was what
00:14:07
a hard time I had talking my dad didn't
00:14:10
giving me 25 cents so I could see the
00:14:13
mummy there was a guard there and then
00:14:16
out another door and they moved you
00:14:17
right by you didn't get to look at it
00:14:19
very
00:14:20
well it was about uh 6 and 1/2 in high
00:14:25
seated and standing it would have been
00:14:27
about 17 in high
00:14:30
The Mummy had brown skin and a flat
00:14:32
skull whsp of gray hair protruded from
00:14:35
the back of its head hundreds of people
00:14:38
saw the mummy over the next 10 years but
00:14:41
no serious scientific analysis was done
00:14:44
until 1950 Mr Goodman Ivan Goodman by
00:14:48
then the mummy had fallen into the hands
00:14:50
of a used car dealer named Ivan Goodman
00:14:53
what do you have to show me well Goodman
00:14:55
took the Relic to Dr Paul Martin at the
00:14:58
Chicago mum Museum of Natural
00:15:00
History some serious efforts were made
00:15:03
in the early 1950s to get this uh uh
00:15:06
little mummy documented and it was done
00:15:08
rather well I think for the Times there
00:15:10
were x-rays
00:15:13
taken uh really a surprising amount of
00:15:15
very uh effective documentation was
00:15:20
made x-rays reveal that the mummy had a
00:15:23
complete skeleton and a full set of
00:15:26
teeth at first it appeared to be the
00:15:28
mummify remains of a fully developed
00:15:31
human being one that was only 17 in
00:15:36
tall but after reviewing all of the
00:15:39
material Dr Martin believes that the
00:15:41
mummy was not a mature adult but an
00:15:45
infant who had suffered from a birth
00:15:47
effect known as an
00:15:49
inphy anilic infants are born without a
00:15:52
brain and lack a complete skull they are
00:15:55
either delivered stillborn or die soon
00:15:58
after birth
00:15:59
however Eugene Basher says that a severe
00:16:03
Blow To The Head could have caused a
00:16:05
malform skull there are pieces of skull
00:16:08
in the scalp that's hanging down like it
00:16:11
was beat down and it's result of
00:16:14
trauma Basher also contends that the
00:16:17
initial x-ray showed that the mummy had
00:16:20
the characteristics of an adult not an
00:16:24
infant it also has a full set of teeth
00:16:27
infants would show two sets of
00:16:29
undeveloped teeth still up in the Jaws
00:16:32
these have descended and there's no
00:16:34
other teeth above them like a baby or a
00:16:37
young person would have all the
00:16:40
Physicians and physical anthropologists
00:16:42
that I know of who have ever looked at
00:16:43
that I've been able to verify to
00:16:45
actually talk to them um have said that
00:16:47
it's some type of infant and and it
00:16:49
looks to them to be an anencephalic
00:16:52
human
00:16:53
infant in October of 1950 Ivan Goodman
00:16:56
loaned The Mummy to Dr Leonard Walder
00:16:58
curator of a New York museum take good
00:17:01
care of him oh don't worry he's in good
00:17:04
hands Goodman felt he could have made a
00:17:06
fortune if wadler could prove that the
00:17:08
mummy was a North American relative of a
00:17:11
rare population of African
00:17:15
pygmies but fate
00:17:17
intervened Ivan Goodman died of a sudden
00:17:20
stroke before the theory was proven and
00:17:22
Dr wadler kept the
00:17:24
mummy both have disappeared
00:17:29
what was the mysterious artifact and
00:17:32
where is it now was it one of those
00:17:35
legendary little people or an anapol
00:17:38
infant born in primitive
00:17:42
times so much more could be done today
00:17:44
in the way of analysis on this small
00:17:46
Mumy um DNA analysis could be done we
00:17:50
have methods now that uh could allow
00:17:53
dating to be done without being that
00:17:55
destructive so it's really important
00:17:58

00:18:15
New York is currently offering a $10,000

a lone Hunter cautiously makes his way
00:19:03
through the woods stalking waiting for
00:19:06
just the right moment to strike the
00:19:09
hunter is not your everyday Outdoorsman
00:19:11
his Target is not an elk or a deer but a
00:19:15
Missouri state highway patrolman
00:19:17
according to the police his name is
00:19:19
Timothy Colmes and he's a member of a
00:19:21
religious group known as the
00:19:27
Freeman the the freemen exist on the
00:19:30
farthest right Fringe of the political
00:19:32
spectrum they believe they are the true
00:19:35
Americans but others including the
00:19:37
police call them domestic
00:19:41
terrorists Mr Thomas in late November of
00:19:44
last year did a couple from Kansas City
00:19:46
call on you at your home or place of
00:19:48
business yes they did what was the
00:19:49
purpose the Freeman believe that the
00:19:52
constitution is a divinely inspired
00:19:54
document along with the Bill of
00:19:56
Rights that gives them preeminent rights
00:19:59
in American
00:20:01
society that they do not have to do
00:20:04
things like pay income taxes or have
00:20:06
driers licenses and so forth because
00:20:08
that's all part of the laws that were
00:20:10
passed after the Constitution and the
00:20:12
Bill of Rights they see these is
00:20:14
man-made laws that don't apply to
00:20:15
them what was it the sheriff wanted to
00:20:18
talk to you
00:20:19
about in the case of Robert Joe a self
00:20:22
style Freeman Minister that philosophy
00:20:25
apparently led him to issue fake legal
00:20:27
documents Jose was convicted of drafting
00:20:30
a fake court order for a parishioner who
00:20:32
had been arrested for a minor traffic
00:20:37
offense for 9 years Joe's remained free
00:20:40
while he contested the conviction until
00:20:42
a new prosecuting attorney ordered the
00:20:44
highway patrol to bring him
00:20:47
in Mr joose has a history of resisting
00:20:51
arrest and to avoid an armed
00:20:53
confrontation on his property where he's
00:20:55
believed to have a large number of
00:20:57
weapons decision was made to arrest him
00:20:59
on a county road where he's by
00:21:02
himself Sergeant Steve dorsy and
00:21:04
Corporal Bob Harper made the arrest
00:21:06
Robert get out of the
00:21:08
van I walked up the van him screaming
00:21:11
all you think you're dealing with
00:21:13
someone that had a mental
00:21:15
problem he's screaming hollering and
00:21:18
just throwing his hands up and saying
00:21:20
who are you who are you Robert if you
00:21:22
don't calm down I'll make you Robert I'm
00:21:24
going to make you
00:21:32
I knew if they were going to kill me
00:21:33
they were going to kill me there wasn't
00:21:33
anything I can do except pray to
00:21:35
God and that's what I was doing Robert
00:21:38
Joe's asked to be filmed in silhouette
00:21:41
due to his religious convictions and I
00:21:43
knew they had no rightful cause of
00:21:44
arrest and they and as it turns out they
00:21:46
didn't have any that's why they had to
00:21:48
make up the story so they had some
00:21:49
reason to hold me
00:21:51
see Robert Jose was arrested on charges
00:21:54
of carrying a concealed weapon and
00:21:56
resisting arrest
00:22:01
[Music]
00:22:03
then 3 months later one of the arresting
00:22:05
officers Corporal Bob Harper became the
00:22:08
target of a
00:22:10
[Music]
00:22:18
sniper I heard this loud shot and I ran
00:22:22
up the hallway and Bob was laying next
00:22:25
to the cabinets and he was trying to
00:22:28
tell me that the can had exploded and I
00:22:31
explained to him that he had been
00:22:33
shot it was a miracle that Bob Harper
00:22:36
survived get a helicopter the bullet
00:22:38
missed his heart by just 116th of an
00:22:44
inch the next day investigators
00:22:46
recovered a vital piece of
00:22:49
evidence uh looks like 716 maybe Bob
00:22:53
Harper was not known to have any enemies
00:22:55
it looks like miles and because of his
00:22:57
recent involvement and the arrest of
00:22:59
Robert Joe's we felt that it was
00:23:02
probably
00:23:03
connected when officers went to the
00:23:06
Joe's Farm to speak with his girlfriend
00:23:08
they were confronted by an armed
00:23:12
stranger Ro gun what do you boys want
00:23:16
this is private land the after a brief
00:23:19
standoff the man agreed to speak to
00:23:22
police right here with the citizen he
00:23:24
identified himself as James Wilson a
00:23:26
resident of Arkansas according to police
00:23:29
Wilson said that church Elders were
00:23:31
training snipers to avenge violations
00:23:34
against their religion St it's the law
00:23:36
it says it in the Bible it's God's law
00:23:39
right there in Colossians 1:13 you can
00:23:41
read about it for yourself we didn't
00:23:42
feel comfortable with what we had heard
00:23:44
from him so the following morning calls
00:23:47
were made to Arkansas and we received a
00:23:50
large amount of information about James
00:23:52
Wilson found out at that time that his
00:23:54
real name was Timothy
00:23:56
comes by the time police got us search
00:23:58
warnant for the Joe's Farm Timothy comes
00:24:01
was gone but investigators did find a
00:24:05
huge Arsenal pistols rifles and more
00:24:08
than 40 sticks of
00:24:11
dynamite police also learned that Colmes
00:24:13
had previously served time on weapons
00:24:17
charges that same day investigators went
00:24:20
to Timothy colm's own Farm in wit
00:24:22
Springs
00:24:23
Arkansas they talked to col's nextdoor
00:24:26
neighbor he told him that his horse had
00:24:28
been shot and gave them the bullet he
00:24:30
recovered can you show me the location
00:24:32
of the shooter sure is my neighbor he's
00:24:34
up this
00:24:36
direction the neighbors suspected that
00:24:38
coms fired it during target practice you
00:24:41
see the Machine Shed there and the tree
00:24:43
to the right he's about Midway in
00:24:44
between back in that brush
00:24:48
line according to authorities a search
00:24:51
of comes' property turned up shell
00:24:53
casings that reportedly match the
00:24:55
casings found outside Bob Harper's
00:24:58
kitchen
00:24:59
window we believe that the weapon used
00:25:02
to shoot Bob Harper was actually an SKS
00:25:05
rifle that had been purchased by Robert
00:25:07
Joe about 3 weeks prior to his arrest
00:25:09
for resisting arrest you will now not
00:25:12
talk about that
00:25:14
weapon Joe said he had nothing to do
00:25:17
with the attack on Bob
00:25:19
Harper didn't know anything about it
00:25:21
till after it happened still don't know
00:25:23
that he's actually shot I've never seen
00:25:24
any medical evidence never heard a
00:25:25
doctor testify a man was shot as far as
00:25:27
I know he had another heart attack and I
00:25:29
had to crack his chest to emergency open
00:25:30
heart on him they'll lie about anything
00:25:32
and everything to try to frame somebody
00:25:33
and and the people that are helping
00:25:35
him so far only Timothy Colmes has been
00:25:38
charged in the shooting of Corporal Bob
00:25:40
Harper authorities believe he has gone
00:25:43
underground and is probably harbored by
00:25:46
members of a right-wing militia
00:25:48
group if you have any information about
00:25:51
Timothy Colmes please log on to our
00:25:53
website at unsolved.com or contact the
00:25:57
FBI
00:25:59
a $100,000 reward is being offered for
00:26:02
information in this
00:26:05
case coming up police suspect the killer
00:26:08
of a teenage girl might be her friend
00:26:11
and neighbor and next the still unsolved
00:26:15
murder of legendary mob boss Bugsy seag
00:26:23
[Music]
00:26:29
life was brutal for Mobsters in the
00:26:31
1940s Mafia bosses took pride in killing
00:26:34
and getting away with
00:26:36
it but there was one famous hit for
00:26:39
which no one has ever taken credit the
00:26:42
murder of Bugsy
00:26:46
seagull late one evening seagull rested
00:26:49
in his girlfriend's Beverly Hills Home
00:26:51
the mob's top assassin was completely
00:26:54
unaware that he himself was a Target
00:27:01
nine shots were fired four found their
00:27:06
Mark Bugsy died
00:27:13
instantly a list of suspects in Bugsy's
00:27:16
murder reads like a classic who done it
00:27:18
business associates a girlfriend even a
00:27:21
bodyguard but police investigating
00:27:23
seagull's murder came up against the
00:27:25
mafia's Code of Silence a w that still
00:27:28
exists
00:27:32
today the main frustration I have in the
00:27:35
case is all my Witnesses are either gone
00:27:38
or still won't
00:27:40
talk so the frustration is is that I'm
00:27:43
running out of time if I haven't lost
00:27:45
that time already and I'm just still not
00:27:47
getting any
00:27:49
information his real name was Benjamin
00:27:52
seagull and he was the mob's most feared
00:27:56
Hitman but the smile the handsome New
00:28:00
Yorker was a coldblooded killer seagull
00:28:03
began a partnership with Meer Lansky in
00:28:06
New York they formed an organized crime
00:28:08
syndicate with its hands in gambling
00:28:10
prostitution and murder for hir Ben
00:28:14
seagull and Maya Lansky were a great
00:28:16
combination they complimented each other
00:28:19
Lansky did the
00:28:20
dinking it was Bugsy who did the
00:28:25
whacking in the early 40s seagull and
00:28:28
Lansky teamed up with another East Coast
00:28:30
mafia boss lucky
00:28:33
luchiano when the team of seagull Lansky
00:28:36
and luchiano decided to expand their
00:28:38
territory it was the beginning of the
00:28:40
end for
00:28:41
Bugsy Bugsy was sent to take control of
00:28:44
gambling in California and there he
00:28:46
faced a major problem suspect number one
00:28:50
Jack
00:28:51
dragman and there ain't no one going to
00:28:55
stand in my way right Jay
00:28:58
dragna controlled a lucrative wire
00:29:00
service used by bookies across the
00:29:02
country and Bugsy wanted it he met him
00:29:05
an offer he couldn't refuse either give
00:29:08
up the wire or give up your
00:29:11
life dragna chose to live which gave him
00:29:14
two reasons to kill Bugsy jealousy and
00:29:19
revenge after Bugsy died Jack dragna got
00:29:23
his wire service back
00:29:31
Bugsy ran the mob's Los Angeles business
00:29:33
with the Showmanship of the Hollywood
00:29:35
Superstar he began an affair with
00:29:38
suspect number two Virginia Hill an
00:29:41
alleged cash Courier for the
00:29:43
M but Hill may have had her own reasons
00:29:46
for wanting Bugsy Deb she was leading a
00:29:49
double
00:29:51
life Virginia Hill was definitely
00:29:55
connected some way with Chicago mob she
00:29:59
was out there keeping an eye on Bugsy
00:30:02
and feeding the Chicago mob information
00:30:05
on Bugsy's
00:30:08
activities Bugsy was killed in
00:30:10
Virginia's home while she was out of
00:30:12
town coincidence or not suspect number
00:30:16
three Mickey Cohen Mickey was a
00:30:19
Cleveland gangster newly transplanted to
00:30:21
La seagull could have had him killed but
00:30:24
instead he put him on his payroll then
00:30:28
like that that this guy stood up to he
00:30:32
liked it so much that he made him his
00:30:34
personal bodyguard
00:30:36
really after Bugsy's death Cohen was
00:30:39
given control of West Coast gambling
00:30:41
which would never have occurred unless
00:30:43
Bugsy was
00:30:45
dead when gambling became legal in
00:30:47
Nevada seagull laid out plans for a
00:30:50
luxurious Casino called The Flamingo
00:30:54
Lansky and luchano put up the $1 million
00:30:56
he needed to build it
00:30:58
but 1 million became two two became four
00:31:01
and four became
00:31:04
six Bugsy was financially out of control
00:31:07
giving Lansky and
00:31:08
luchano a motive for his murder it has
00:31:12
to stop Lans did go out and visit
00:31:16
seagull in Nevada and I think he
00:31:18
cautioned him and he warned him pay
00:31:21
attention the business don't let the
00:31:23
cost get too high your investors are not
00:31:26
happy the there were also rumors that
00:31:28
seagull was pocketing some of his
00:31:30
investors money to support Virginia
00:31:34
Hill she was a very very expensive
00:31:37
Playmate they probably had a feeling
00:31:39
that he was spending some of their money
00:31:41
on
00:31:42
Virginia 20 minutes after seagull's
00:31:45
death two members of the Lansky luchano
00:31:48
mob took control of the Flamingo
00:31:51
Hotel new boss Mr seagull's no longer in
00:31:54
the picture nobody believed that the
00:31:56
timing of the Takeover was
00:31:59
coincidental there are five suspects
00:32:02
that could have been involved in Bugsy's
00:32:03
death some feel the most likely scenario
00:32:06
involves them
00:32:08
all Virginia Hill she provided the
00:32:12
location for the murder and possibly was
00:32:14
given a reward she had $23 million in a
00:32:18
in a Swiss bank account seagull's
00:32:21
bodyguard Mickey Cohen knew his boss's
00:32:23
schedule for the evening but at the time
00:32:25
of the killing he was not doing his job
00:32:29
Micky Cohen even came into the station
00:32:31
and said uh what happened what happened
00:32:34
I was supposed to be watching him and
00:32:37
Jack
00:32:38
dragna but he may have ordered the hit
00:32:40
with the approval of Lansky and luchano
00:32:44
he would not have dared to do it on his
00:32:46
own he would have asked permission from
00:32:49
people he regarded in in the New York
00:32:51
area uh it's a possibility because they
00:32:53
were thinking of killing seagull anyway
00:32:55
so all right let Jack dragna handle it
00:32:59
today none of the key suspects in the
00:33:01
SEAL murder are alive but Beverly Hills
00:33:04
police still hope that someday the mafia
00:33:07
Code of Silence will be broken murder
00:33:10
has no statute of limitations so until
00:33:13
the case is solved the case remains
00:33:21
open when we return clues in the murder
00:33:24
of a teenage girl lead police to the
00:33:26
home of a very Prime minent
00:33:38
family on October 31st in Greenwich
00:33:41
Connecticut a teenager discovers the
00:33:43
body of her missing friend Martha
00:33:47
Moxley I found Martha it appeared she
00:33:51
had been blooding to death her jeans and
00:33:53
her Underpants were pulled down around
00:33:55
her knees but there was no evidence of
00:33:58
sexual assault the night before Martha
00:34:02
had vanished while out with her friends
00:34:05
Martha was struck with a uh golf club
00:34:08
she received uh several blows to the
00:34:10
Head uh the head of the club was found
00:34:13
50 ft from the portion of her driveway
00:34:16
where she we believe she was accosted
00:34:18
it's believed that the a portion of the
00:34:21
shaft of the golf club that was used was
00:34:24
later used as a as a weapon to stab her
00:34:27
with
00:34:29
everyone just assumed that Martha's
00:34:31
killer had to be an outsider until Clues
00:34:35
found that the scene LED investigators
00:34:37
to a prominent local
00:34:39
family here are the clubs you requested
00:34:42
from that set the broken Golf Club found
00:34:45
by the police turned out to be part of a
00:34:47
set belonging to the skel family they
00:34:49
lived across the street from the Moxley
00:34:52
Ron's Cel is the brother of Ethel
00:34:54
Kennedy Robert Kennedy's Widow the that
00:34:58
the club now was determined to have come
00:35:00
from that from the sko resin I think it
00:35:02
was a significant piece of evidence and
00:35:04
and made us obviously focus our
00:35:06
investigation in that household and uh
00:35:09
within that
00:35:10
family the police estimated that Martha
00:35:13
had been murdered between
00:35:14
9:45 and 10
00:35:17
p.m. 15-year-old Michael skel told
00:35:20
police that he had been hanging out with
00:35:22
Martha that night and that he said he
00:35:24
last saw her a little after 900 p.m.
00:35:28
17-year-old Thomas skel said that he was
00:35:30
with her as well Brian Wilson and uh
00:35:34
Alexander Nelson Thomas in fact was the
00:35:37
last person known to have seen Martha
00:35:40
alive I had a paper duw on Abraham
00:35:43
Lincoln so I went back inside the house
00:35:45
and up into my room and what time was
00:35:49
it say about
00:35:52
9:30 when police checked with Thomas's
00:35:54
school they found no such report had
00:35:57
been assigned
00:35:59
investigators found another potential
00:36:01
suspect also in the skel
00:36:04
household till about 12
00:36:08
12:30 24-year-old Kenneth Littleton had
00:36:11
just been hired as a Livin tutor for the
00:36:13
skle children he told police that he
00:36:16
heard noises outside the house sometime
00:36:18
between 9:30 and 10 p.m. could you go
00:36:22
and take a look please sure Mrs Watson
00:36:25
before he went outside Littleton said he
00:36:27
checked and the seven skle
00:36:29
children the four oldest boys including
00:36:31
Michael and Thomas were not at
00:36:34
home Littleton also said he didn't see
00:36:37
Thomas until 10:25 when Thomas joined
00:36:41
him in front of the TV the other skagle
00:36:44
boys came home within a half an
00:36:47
hour over the next several months
00:36:50
detectives interviewed more than 200
00:36:52
people and gave several polygraph exams
00:36:55
according to police Thomas skel was
00:36:58
given two polygraph tests the first was
00:37:01
inconclusive but Thomas passed the
00:37:03
second and then after months of
00:37:06
cooperating with authorities the skakel
00:37:09
on the advice of their attorney refus to
00:37:11
answer any more
00:37:13
questions no one has to an obligation to
00:37:16
cooperate with police but most instances
00:37:19
individuals who may have some knowledge
00:37:22
that may lead to the identification of a
00:37:24
individual who has committed a violent
00:37:25
crime are more than pleased to to
00:37:27
contribute that information to the
00:37:29
police so it's most unusual when an
00:37:31
individual possessing information
00:37:33
decides that he does not want to give
00:37:35
that information to in investigators do
00:37:38
you know who killed Martha Moxley no
00:37:41
attention then shifted to Kenneth
00:37:43
Littleton who had been Let Go by the
00:37:44
skakel after 6 months according to
00:37:48
police he was given a polygraph
00:37:50
regarding the Moxley murder and failed
00:37:52
still authorities felt there wasn't
00:37:54
enough evidence to make an arrest the
00:37:56
case became
00:37:58
inactive do you have any information
00:38:01
about who killed Martha
00:38:02
Moxley no if you're implying that my
00:38:05
family is lying to protect me you're
00:38:07
dead wrong 16 years later the rape trial
00:38:11
of William Kennedy Smith brought the
00:38:13
Moxley case back to
00:38:15
life the connection between the skagle
00:38:18
and Kennedy families was the
00:38:22
Catalyst within weeks the Greenwich
00:38:24
Police had reopened their investigation
00:38:29
they brought in noted forensic
00:38:30
pathologist Henry
00:38:32
Lee Dr Lee was able to use technology
00:38:35
unavailable at the time the crime was
00:38:38
committed we was able to re-exam certain
00:38:42
evidence we was able on some newer
00:38:46
evidence among the items examined by Dr
00:38:49
Lee were clothes found discarded in the
00:38:51
skakel's garbage shortly after the
00:38:53
murder this included a pair of pants and
00:38:55
sneakers which reportedly belong to
00:38:58
Michael
00:38:59
sker yeah we found some hairs and
00:39:03
fibers some of the hair michos
00:39:05
scopically similar to
00:39:08
hers other hair dissimilar to
00:39:12
her doct Le determined that the hair
00:39:14
belonged to a male caucasian the problem
00:39:17
was that he didn't have a hair sample
00:39:19
from any of the possible suspects and
00:39:21
was unable to make a match however after
00:39:24
studying the crime scene photographs Dr
00:39:27
was able to provide a possible motive
00:39:30
for Martha's
00:39:31
murder the blood smar on her body
00:39:34
indicates somebody tried to use
00:39:38
force it suggest could be a sexual
00:39:41
motivated
00:39:44
homicide there were no defense wounds
00:39:47
which indicates that she knew her
00:39:50
attacker merely the fact that she was
00:39:53
hit repeatedly with a golf club
00:39:54
indicates some kind of Rage which
00:39:56
personalized is this thing which
00:39:58
indicates that there was anger that the
00:40:02
two had to have known each other that it
00:40:04
was a crime of
00:40:08
passion time and again the trail LED
00:40:11
right back to the skel family it's
00:40:14
frustrating to know that for 20 years um
00:40:18
they've known that they lied and they
00:40:19
know something that's going on um and
00:40:21
I'm not saying that they did it but they
00:40:24
know something uh that could help us and
00:40:27
that we've actually had some little
00:40:29
breaking down in their story and one
00:40:34
thing breaks down maybe other things
00:40:36
will break down and it's bound to happen
00:40:39
anytime I can do anything to help it I'm
00:40:41
going to do it and I won't give up and I
00:40:44
have to do that for
00:40:48
Martha
00:40:50
