Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 3, Episode 5

March 09, 2017 / 42:49

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the murder case of Dan Monty Calvo, the legend of the Cadborosaurus, the disappearance of David Stone, and the capture of meth manufacturer Jonathan "Thumper" Brown.

The first segment focuses on Dan Monty Calvo, who is serving 27 years to life for the murder of his wife, Carol. Despite his conviction, Dan maintains his innocence, claiming intruders were responsible for the shooting. Witnesses and evidence suggest a more complex scenario, including a potential confession from a neighbor.

The episode then shifts to the legend of the Cadborosaurus, a sea monster reported in Cadboro Bay, Canada. Eyewitness accounts describe its serpent-like appearance and unusual behavior, with some claiming to have seen the creature firsthand.

Next, the story of David Stone, a successful stock broker who disappeared while on a spiritual journey in the New Mexico desert, is presented. His abandoned car and mysterious clues left behind lead to speculation about his fate, culminating in the discovery of his remains years later.

Finally, the episode concludes with the capture of Jonathan "Thumper" Brown, a notorious meth manufacturer. After evading law enforcement for years, he was arrested following a tip-off, leading to his conviction and a lengthy prison sentence.

TL;DR

Dan Monty Calvo claims innocence in wife's murder, Cadborosaurus sightings, David Stone's mysterious disappearance, and the capture of meth manufacturer Thumper Brown.

shot my wife please hurry police
00:01:38
received a frantic 911 call from a man
00:01:41
who said he and his wife had been shot
00:01:44
by
00:01:45
Intruders I'm on the
00:01:47
way moments later Patrol units
00:01:50
surrounded the home of Dan and Carol
00:01:52
Monty
00:01:54
Cala Dan had been shot once in the lower
00:01:57
back but was able to leave the house
00:01:59
house on his
00:02:01
own inside officers found his wife Carol
00:02:04
mortally wounded shot twice in the neck
00:02:07
at first police believed that it was a
00:02:09
clear case of a burglary that had ended
00:02:12
in
00:02:14
violence however within 24 hours they
00:02:17
began to think that Dan Monty Cavo had
00:02:20
staged the entire episode they suspected
00:02:24
he murdered his
00:02:27
wife Mon caval was for L charged with
00:02:30
murder today he is serving 27 years to
00:02:33
life for a crime that he swears he did
00:02:37
not
00:02:38
commit did you kill your wife
00:02:41
no could you have
00:02:45
never why
00:02:47
not I mean I love it I love it I mean
00:02:51
the bond we had was not just a an
00:02:53
emotional bond and a physical Bond a
00:02:55
spiritual
00:02:57
bond to the police Dan m alvo was a
00:03:00
murder suspect with an obvious motive he
00:03:03
was an alcoholic ex-convict with huge
00:03:07
gandling deaths and his wife was worth
00:03:09
more than a half a million dollars in
00:03:11
life
00:03:12
insurance Dan has always insisted that
00:03:15
Carol was murdered by Intruders and now
00:03:18
a witness has come forward to confirm
00:03:21
his
00:03:23
story Dan Monty cell met Carol in the
00:03:26
state penitentiary in Oxford Wisconsin
00:03:29
she was a prison Minister he was serving
00:03:32
20 years for bank
00:03:35
robbery she had so much so much goodness
00:03:38
such a joy such a peace about it that
00:03:41
she would let up light up a room anytime
00:03:43
she walked in the smile the eyes would
00:03:45
just capture you so in a period about a
00:03:48
year and a half we we fell in love it's
00:03:51
a difficult place to fall in love but we
00:03:54
did Dan and Carol married Dan received
00:03:57
an early parole and eventually the the
00:03:59
couple moved to
00:04:02
California a few years later Dan was
00:04:05
diagnosed with a bleeding ulcer unable
00:04:08
to work he drank heavily and gambled
00:04:11
another one when Carol won a trip to
00:04:14
Hawaii through her job both of them
00:04:16
hoped that it would be like a second
00:04:18
honeymoon so what else did you do today
00:04:21
know what you are about to see is Dan
00:04:23
Monty C's version of what happened the
00:04:26
night before their departure at about
00:04:29
10:30 Dan and Carol went for a walk as
00:04:32
they did almost every night car and I
00:04:35
had did some shopping that night to pick
00:04:37
up some last minute items and then as
00:04:39
was our habit changed clothes and took a
00:04:42
walk this is a night we're happy we're
00:04:44
going away tomorrow just looking forward
00:04:46
to it because we were taking Carol's car
00:04:49
the next morning we had decided to
00:04:50
change the registration tag on Carol's
00:04:52
car her registration expired that night
00:04:55
at midnight well honey give me your keys
00:04:56
and I'll go get a paper towel to clean
00:04:58
that oh that's a good idea
00:05:00
and with that she went into the
00:05:05
house and I was thinking about putting
00:05:07
the water sprinkler on cuz we're going
00:05:09
to be gone for a week I heard her say
00:05:11
something and it got my
00:05:15
[Music]
00:05:18
attention as soon as I ran inside I was
00:05:21
grabbed from
00:05:23
behind El pressed him to my back knew
00:05:26
was a gun as I twisted I saw a mustache
00:05:31
remember going down I remember a voice
00:05:33
saying let's get out of here because I
00:05:36
was laying right there by the front
00:05:38
door you know you just got the sense of
00:05:40
people going out the front
00:05:41
door so um I was able to get up look out
00:05:45
the front door to see if I can see I
00:05:47
couldn't see
00:05:48
nothing Dan had been shot once in the
00:05:51
lower
00:05:52
back no vial organs were hit and there
00:05:54
was almost no bleeding when he saw Carol
00:05:58
lying in the hallway
00:06:00
he ran the call
00:06:05
911 the office phone was broken so Monte
00:06:08
calvo ran to the living room it was
00:06:11
11:01
00:06:17
p.m. what's your
00:06:21
emergency
00:06:23
sh what shot I can't understand you were
00:06:27
you shot yeah my wife don't please Hur
00:06:33
me I'm on the way we're on the
00:06:39
way Patrol unit soon began to
00:06:43
arrive the officers proceeded cautiously
00:06:46
thinking that the gunman may still be
00:06:49
inside the
00:06:50
house Dan says that he stayed with his
00:06:53
wife still no one entered the home
00:06:58
door fire finally Dan Monty calvo came
00:07:01
to the front door calling to the police
00:07:03
to help his wife the police could not
00:07:06
hear what he was saying they yelled for
00:07:09
him to come out with his hands
00:07:12
up Dan claims at first he could not hear
00:07:15
the
00:07:20
police at least 10 minutes after Dan
00:07:22
Monty C called 911 the police finally
00:07:26
entered his
00:07:27
house Carol m calvo was pronounced dead
00:07:31
at the
00:07:33
scene Police Department is about 2
00:07:35
minutes from my
00:07:36
home St Joseph's Hospital is 1 minute
00:07:39
from my home if my wife could have got
00:07:41
help at the trauma center it was a
00:07:43
certified Trauma Center she might be
00:07:45
alive
00:07:47
to that night the bullet was removed
00:07:50
from Dan's back for the next 4 days
00:07:54
detectives searched his
00:07:56
house at first they found evidence EV to
00:07:59
support Monty Calo story there was a
00:08:02
small slit in the rear screen door a
00:08:05
cash box in the filing cabinet
00:08:07
containing it had been jimmied open Dan
00:08:10
Clan $800 was missing hry bring me one
00:08:13
of those baggies here police also found
00:08:16
a shell casing from the bullet that hit
00:08:20
Dan yet other things didn't make sense
00:08:24
Carol's purse was left untouched and the
00:08:27
police didn't think that a burglar would
00:08:29
break into a house with all the lights
00:08:31
on and two cars in the
00:08:34
driveway and then they learned that Dan
00:08:37
Monty calvo was a convicted bank robber
00:08:40
I think once they ran the WAP sheet on
00:08:42
Dan and saw some of his paranoid
00:08:45
Tendencies and his fear of the police
00:08:49
that they eliminated any other option
00:08:54
and everything began being put into a
00:08:56
pretty much scene through the tunnel
00:08:58
vision of this guy had to have done it
00:09:00
now let's prove
00:09:03
it according to Monte Cal's lawyers the
00:09:06
bur Bank police secretly tape recorded
00:09:08
conversations with
00:09:10
him I'd like to ask you some questions
00:09:12
about what happened that night how
00:09:14
already told you everything that
00:09:15
happened that night I told you already
00:09:16
well you don't mind you Danny I mean you
00:09:18
don't have anything to hide do
00:09:20
you no I have anything to hide in one
00:09:22
conversation Dan revealed that Carol had
00:09:25
been heavily insured and that he owed
00:09:27
more than $20,000
00:09:29
in gambling
00:09:31
debts it gave them all they needed to
00:09:34
believe there was a
00:09:35
motive it was very simple if if he
00:09:38
killed Carol he walked with a h more
00:09:40
than half a million dollars that coupled
00:09:42
with the fact that I have a record that
00:09:45
coupled with the fact that in their
00:09:46
minds nobody else was
00:09:49
there I was guilty and they were never
00:09:52
going to look any other way anywhere
00:09:54
else the investigation dragged on for
00:09:57
over a year Dan sold his house and put
00:10:00
most of his belongings in storage 14
00:10:03
months after Carol's death he filed a
00:10:06
negligence suit against the Burbank
00:10:08
Police Department alleging that his wife
00:10:11
might have survived if the police had
00:10:13
responded more quickly some thought that
00:10:16
Dan was trying to capitalize on his
00:10:19
wife's
00:10:20
death around the same time detectives
00:10:23
obtained a warrant to search his storage
00:10:25
locker they found what they believed had
00:10:28
been The Hiding Place for the murder
00:10:29
weapon a hollowed out
00:10:33
book The hollowed out book was the most
00:10:36
compelling piece of evidence against Dan
00:10:39
it was the exact size of the two guns
00:10:41
and if you work the two guns in the
00:10:44
right direction it exactly fit the same
00:10:46
guns that were used in this
00:10:49
crime the case against Mony calvo was
00:10:52
getting
00:10:55
stronger when we return a witness says
00:10:58
that she knows who committed the murder
00:11:01
and that it wasn't Dan Monty
00:11:13
C in the months after Carol Monty
00:11:16
calvo's murder police began to build a
00:11:19
case against her
00:11:22
husband excuse me Dan Monty caval was a
00:11:25
known heavy drinker and his character
00:11:27
had become a major issue and when I go
00:11:30
to Vegas they treat me like a king
00:11:32
detectives found Witnesses who said that
00:11:35
while Carol was still alive Dan had a
00:11:37
reputation for coming on to women in
00:11:40
local bars I would like you to go to
00:11:42
Vegas with
00:11:44
me the image of the da painting me as
00:11:46
some sort of character you know that was
00:11:48
out there drinking and and and carousing
00:11:50
and whatever it's not
00:11:52
factual I challenged the prosecutor from
00:11:55
the stand to bring one woman into court
00:11:57
that said I cheated on my wife with her
00:11:59
one but they couldn't I was no angel I
00:12:02
was a jerk many times okay but what they
00:12:05
tainted me as now
00:12:08
[Music]
00:12:10
now nearly 2 years after Carol's death
00:12:14
Dan Mony calal was forly charged with
00:12:18
murder at the trial Monty calal and his
00:12:21
attorney hop to prove that other people
00:12:23
beside Dan and Carol had been at the
00:12:26
crime scene the police investigation
00:12:28
uncovered a number of fingerprints which
00:12:31
they could never identify also partial
00:12:34
Footprints lifted from their kitchen
00:12:35
floor could not be tied to Dan or Carol
00:12:39
this evidence seemed to back up Dan
00:12:44
story in addition police had questioned
00:12:47
neighbors who said they heard people
00:12:49
running from Dan and Carol's house on
00:12:51
the night of the murder one man said
00:12:54
they knocked over the ladder in his
00:12:56
backyard Police Department sorry to you
00:13:00
named Susan Brown who lived two doors
00:13:02
away said her wood pile had been knocked
00:13:05
down when someone jumped over her fence
00:13:08
I have a pile of wood back in the
00:13:10
backyard I heard it fall down she didn't
00:13:12
think nothing of it you know at the
00:13:13
trial Brown testified on Monty Cav's
00:13:16
behalf but her testimony had no effect
00:13:19
on the
00:13:21
outcome then Monty Cal was convicted and
00:13:24
given the maximum sentence 27 years to
00:13:28
life
00:13:30
but his court appointed investigator
00:13:32
continued to believe that Dan was
00:13:36
innocent before that trial came to an
00:13:38
end I knew Dan was innocent that was
00:13:41
when I first contacted Susan Brown and
00:13:44
began talking to
00:13:47
her after Dan's conviction Jean Brisco
00:13:50
worked on his own time and without pay
00:13:53
he continued pressing Brown for details
00:13:57
um if I guess what happened in that
00:14:00
house would you tell
00:14:02
me finally Susan Brown made a stunning
00:14:06
admission okay you were in that house
00:14:08
and you shot Carol is that right I
00:14:10
didn't shoot
00:14:12
Carol I shot Dan but I didn't shoot
00:14:17
Carol people keep saying Dan's R's
00:14:23
wife Dan didn't shoot his wife cuz I'm
00:14:25
the one to shot
00:14:27
Dan
00:14:33
and my partner shot
00:14:36
Carol Susan says that she and her
00:14:40
friends were
00:14:42
partying they ran out of drugs and they
00:14:44
needed some quick cash they knew that
00:14:48
Dan and Carol were going to be in Hawaii
00:14:50
they thought they had already gone and
00:14:52
that's when Dan and Carol came home from
00:14:53
their walk because indeed they were not
00:14:55
gone they're here no get that come on go
00:15:00
scare the next thing I can only remember
00:15:02
was here when Carol says what are you
00:15:04
doing
00:15:05
here and then two shots
00:15:12
fired I didn't deliberately shoot Dan I
00:15:15
ended up wrestling with him and gun
00:15:18
going off now that fits Dan store
00:15:22
perfectly so in that sense it definitely
00:15:24
lends a lot of credibility to Dan Dan a
00:15:29
Cal's version of events differs from
00:15:31
Susan Brown's in only one crucial detail
00:15:34
Dan still insists that his as salent had
00:15:37
a
00:15:38
mustache I know when I was grabbed I
00:15:40
twisted and I saw that mustache right
00:15:43
and I thought the person that grab me
00:15:44
was strong I know was taller I don't
00:15:47
know how Susan and brown thinks she's
00:15:49
that
00:15:49
tall um there's one other possibility
00:15:52
that Susan cannot admit that she shot my
00:15:56
life I believe Beyond any doubt
00:15:59
whatsoever that she's telling the truth
00:16:01
that she was in fact there and she did
00:16:05
in fact shoot someone she told me that
00:16:08
Carol had lost one of her flip-flops and
00:16:11
uh that can only be verified by a police
00:16:14
report which was taken by Burbank she
00:16:16
gave me the color of the cash box uh
00:16:19
taking of $800 she mentioned a slit in
00:16:22
the screen that was never made public
00:16:24
she's consistent with the type of weapon
00:16:26
that was used both weapons a 38 a
00:16:30
25 I'm convinced Beyond any doubt
00:16:33
whatsoever that she was inside that
00:16:34
house and took part of
00:16:37
that Susan Brown's confession prompted a
00:16:40
month-long investigation by the DA's
00:16:44
office however he refused to reopen the
00:16:47
case Susan Brown allegedly had a history
00:16:51
of mental illness and some believe that
00:16:53
she made up the entire story simply to
00:16:56
get attention when they right mind would
00:16:58
sit and say they had something to do
00:17:00
with a murder Knowing damn well it could
00:17:02
put them
00:17:03
away when there's already someone
00:17:06
sitting paying for a crime who would be
00:17:10
stupid enough to come forward and say
00:17:11
that unless they're going through what
00:17:14
I'm going
00:17:16
through because they did do
00:17:20
it Dan Monty caval is convinced Susan
00:17:23
Brown was involved in his wife's murder
00:17:26
he believes he was convicted not because
00:17:28
of anything that happened that night but
00:17:31
because of his criminal past I have a
00:17:33
record does that make me a murderer I'm
00:17:35
a gambler that makes me a murderer my
00:17:37
wife has insurance that makes me a
00:17:39
murderer forget in the emotional part in
00:17:41
how much I love Carol okay you think I'm
00:17:43
going to sit there shoot myself in the
00:17:45
back I mean it's it's so absurd it's
00:17:50
pathetic just 17 days after he was
00:17:53
sentenced Dan mon calvo remarried his
00:17:56
new wife was one of Carol's close
00:17:58
friends from church Monty Cavo is
00:18:01
currently incarcerated at Vacaville
00:18:03
prison where he is serving his sentence
00:18:06
of 27 years to
00:18:10
Life Next the hunt for evidence of a
00:18:14
legendary sea
00:18:26
monster in Scotland it's the lock Nest
00:18:30
monster in New York's Lake Champlain
00:18:33
it's
00:18:34
champ there's Ogo Pogo in British
00:18:39
Columbia and finally in cadboro Bay
00:18:42
Canada it's the
00:18:44
legendary
00:18:46
caddy the thing I noticed most about it
00:18:49
was its eyes that they were big and they
00:18:51
were serpent-like
00:18:53
the odor from it was just incredible it
00:18:57
permeated it made you want to vomit it
00:19:00
went down and a hump came up and then it
00:19:03
went down and another hump came up and
00:19:05
it was like it was
00:19:07
moving cadborosaurus caddy for short is
00:19:11
the sea monster of cadb bay many people
00:19:14
believe that this is the carcass of just
00:19:17
such a creature computer enhancement
00:19:20
gives us an idea of what it might have
00:19:22
looked like before it was eaten by a
00:19:27
whale and 1937 there was a whaling
00:19:30
station in the north part of British
00:19:32
Columbia and one of the whaleboats
00:19:35
harpooned this big sperm whale about 6
00:19:37
hours run from the Wailing station towed
00:19:40
back and the fers got to it fairly
00:19:44
quickly fencers are the workers who
00:19:46
butcher the whales once they're brought
00:19:48
to the shore inside the stomach of this
00:19:50
one they made an astonishing
00:19:54
find they came across this incredible
00:19:57
snake like thing none of them had ever
00:19:59
seen it before in years of wailing and
00:20:01
fansing they knew it was something
00:20:03
different James Wakeland then a
00:20:05
24-year-old blacksmith saw the creature
00:20:09
with his own
00:20:10
eyes I don't know I got no idea what it
00:20:14
is I going to never send anything like
00:20:17
it and I guess somebody thought well
00:20:19
that's a queer looking Affair there we
00:20:21
better get the vager and he got it
00:20:23
brought down and he took the
00:20:25
pictures the creature was about 12 ft
00:20:28
long it had a head shaped like a horse
00:20:30
or a camel and a thin snake-like body
00:20:34
approximately 16 in around it has a pair
00:20:37
of hind flippers that were webbed
00:20:41
together with the tail to form this
00:20:43
whike fluke which undoubtedly provided
00:20:46
the main driving force for this
00:20:49
animal the Whalers sent part of the
00:20:51
specimen to a
00:20:53
museum there the director Francis kerm
00:20:57
dismissed it as the fetus of a baline
00:20:59
whale and tossed it
00:21:02
out but even to untrained eyes a baline
00:21:06
whale fetus looks unlike the carcass
00:21:09
that they found in the whale if he just
00:21:12
stopped and thought would these men send
00:21:14
down a fetal baline whale they dissected
00:21:17
hundreds of these things out of dead
00:21:19
whale uteruses every week they they knew
00:21:22
what a fetal bailine whale so that was
00:21:25
really not complimentary to these
00:21:28
professional
00:21:29
Whalers Skeptics claim the photo may be
00:21:32
a hoax but that hardly explains the
00:21:34
people who insist they've seen
00:21:37
[Music]
00:21:39
caddy William hageland was sailing in a
00:21:42
remote Cove when he and his sons caught
00:21:45
what he now believes was a baby
00:21:50
caddy looked like a little gter snake
00:21:52
about 16 in long maybe the thickness of
00:21:55
my thumb but it had a little shoulders
00:21:58
with little flippers on its
00:22:01
shoulders and uh a bit of a neck not
00:22:04
much but and a head on it with two
00:22:06
bright brown eyes looking at
00:22:08
us heglin sketched the animal in detail
00:22:11
he wanted to take it to the nearest
00:22:13
biology station but he was at least a
00:22:16
day
00:22:17
away through the evening I could hear
00:22:20
this little thing making quite a fuss in
00:22:21
the bucket that we' put it into you
00:22:24
could see that he was quite terrified
00:22:25
and quite put out with all of this so I
00:22:27
felt that maybe if we try to H him over
00:22:30
night that he might perish I just uh
00:22:33
after a great deal of soul searching
00:22:35
decided to put it back in the water and
00:22:37
leave it
00:22:39
be for the second time what was thought
00:22:42
to be a caddy was thrown back in the
00:22:46
bay with the help of a paleontologist we
00:22:49
applied computer animation to the
00:22:51
photographs of
00:22:53
cadborosaurus a caddy 7 m long would
00:22:56
probably have at least 360 vertebrae
00:23:00
that would give it enough flexibility to
00:23:02
form the Hoops so often seen by
00:23:06
eyewitnesses but unlike a snake which
00:23:09
can only Wiggle from side to side a
00:23:12
cadborosaurus could move itself forward
00:23:14
using its tail flute and steering with
00:23:17
its for Fins like a sea
00:23:19
lion at least six times a year there are
00:23:22
sightings of this exact creature I was
00:23:26
walking my dog lady and as we were
00:23:28
coming down the path to the beach uh she
00:23:31
was struggling to get away from me she
00:23:32
just didn't want to go to the
00:23:35
beach finally I pulled her and pulled
00:23:37
her and she got closer and as I turned
00:23:39
to look down I saw this face looking at
00:23:42
me and it was shaped like a horse face
00:23:46
and there were eyes that were like a
00:23:48
snake and as I I looked at it it looked
00:23:51
at me and then it dropped his head below
00:23:53
the cliff I sort of took my breath away
00:23:56
when I saw it heard a sound thought it
00:23:58
was probably a whale or something looked
00:23:59
out didn't see much and heard it again
00:24:02
and saw like a strange head out of the
00:24:05
water about 50 60 ft
00:24:08
away it had the definite snout with a
00:24:11
big uh large head um really Rocky
00:24:16
looking really greeny black color almost
00:24:19
like a garbage bag
00:24:21
color it was a very odd looking uh
00:24:25
looking thing it had two itical Hoops uh
00:24:29
as we are on approach we could uh see
00:24:32
that it was moving very quickly through
00:24:33
the water and I would estimate to be
00:24:35
about 40 mph and we could actually see
00:24:39
through the two Hoops we could see uh
00:24:42
you know what was on the other side of
00:24:44
the hoop so that was very
00:24:47
strange it was the uh most unique thing
00:24:50
I've ever seen in the waters around here
00:24:52
I've seen uh know lots of different
00:24:54
things uh but I've never seen something
00:24:56
like that
00:24:59
it's just a question of time until
00:25:02
somebody viewing one of the six or eight
00:25:05
people who see it every year is going to
00:25:07
luck in with either a still camera or a
00:25:11
video but it's it's it's such a rare
00:25:13
occasion that at the moment we can only
00:25:16
say the animal is rare but it's
00:25:21
there Skeptics claim caddy eyewitnesses
00:25:24
are mistaken they believe they're
00:25:27
probably seeing humpback whales elephant
00:25:29
seals basking sharks or maybe a herd of
00:25:33
sea
00:25:34
lions hopefully the next person to get a
00:25:37
hold of the Caddy will resist the urge
00:25:40
to dump it back in the bay maybe then
00:25:43
this unol mystery will finally be
00:25:51
soled next a successful stock analyst
00:25:55
sets out on a journey of self-discovery
00:25:58
and
00:26:03
[Music]
00:26:09
disappears many believe the desert that
00:26:12
stretches across Arizona and New Mexico
00:26:14
is a source of mystical
00:26:20
power here in this beautiful but
00:26:22
unforgiving Wilderness a strange and
00:26:25
intriguing mystery began one Halloween
00:26:32
Dawn local farmer Larry Rivers speaks
00:26:36
with an unusual young man The Stranger
00:26:39
claims to be searching for the
00:26:43
Beast it was pretty cold that morning I
00:26:45
come driving out my road and this guy is
00:26:47
walking down here in a short sleeve
00:26:49
shirt a pair of shorts on carrying a
00:26:51
stick in his
00:26:52
hand hello you lost no I'm not lost what
00:26:56
are you doing out here yeah I'm looking
00:26:58
for the
00:27:00
Beast I told him he wasn't going to find
00:27:02
the Beast out here and he told me he'd
00:27:04
find him well I'm I'm going to keep
00:27:07
looking was weird
00:27:10
no The Stranger was 29-year-old David
00:27:13
Stone and Larry Rivers was the last
00:27:16
person to ever see
00:27:19
him David Stone was a highly successful
00:27:22
stock broker then he decided to change
00:27:25
his life and became involved with a New
00:27:27
Age movement his obsession with
00:27:30
spirituality may have sent him on a
00:27:32
journey from which there was no
00:27:36
return well I think he could best be
00:27:38
described as um overachiever in just
00:27:42
about every way you've never met a
00:27:45
Kinder gentler young man than him but
00:27:48
then on the other hand you put him in a
00:27:51
football uniform and he was like a
00:27:53
proverbial
00:27:56
Commando for years David struggled with
00:27:58
his dual
00:28:02
nature one day he temporarily lost
00:28:04
control during a party at his own
00:28:07
apartment what going on David started
00:28:11
hitting him he said he might have hit
00:28:13
him all 20 25 times and he didn't really
00:28:16
hurt him but felt he had to do
00:28:23
that hey Dave yeah uh where you going
00:28:28
the next morning David told John that he
00:28:30
needed to get away he said that he would
00:28:32
be back in just a few
00:28:38
days David's abandoned car was
00:28:40
discovered many days later on New
00:28:42
Mexico's desolate Highway
00:28:49
80 police interviewed local residents
00:28:52
and several said they had seen
00:28:54
David we had left our home in coton city
00:28:56
and we're driving up to the ranch as we
00:28:59
went by we saw this young man and we
00:29:02
thought perhaps he'd had car trouble so
00:29:04
we
00:29:05
stopped trouble no I'm okay and so we
00:29:09
just went
00:29:11
[Music]
00:29:14
on I heard this voice and I seen this
00:29:18
man walking across the way there are
00:29:22
thought it was uh unusual that he'd be
00:29:24
going out across the desert at that time
00:29:26
of the year in
00:29:29
[Music]
00:29:32
shorts David's car was found near the
00:29:35
pyramid mountain range pyramids are a
00:29:38
key part of New Age
00:29:40
philosophy each year many Believers come
00:29:43
here to experience what is known as
00:29:45
Vision Quest a journey to find one's
00:29:47
inner self it is believed that through
00:29:49
isolation and meditation a person can
00:29:52
experience a vision that reveals their
00:29:55
true identity
00:29:58
I am convinced once he arrived at that
00:30:01
location that he felt like this would be
00:30:04
the perfect starting point for whatever
00:30:06
Vision Quest he personally felt that he
00:30:09
had to embark
00:30:11
on in that process you have to face what
00:30:15
they term as being the Beast this Beast
00:30:18
is that evil or negativism which is in
00:30:24
you 4 days after David's abandoned car
00:30:27
was found a fullscale Manhunt was
00:30:30
launched for 3 Days planes and trackers
00:30:34
scoured the
00:30:35
desert David's Trail headed Northwest
00:30:39
from his car in the direction of Granite
00:30:42
Peak we thought was interesting because
00:30:44
that mountain from the south looks kind
00:30:45
of pyramid shaped it has an interesting
00:30:48
look to it that might have meant
00:30:49
something to his religion it might not
00:30:51
have just 1 half mile from the highway
00:30:54
Searchers discovered the first in a
00:30:56
series of biz B clues that David Left
00:31:00
[Music]
00:31:02
Behind that's when they found a large
00:31:04
pyramid up in that wash it had been made
00:31:06
out of sand mounded up and rocks on the
00:31:08
corner that was the first thing we
00:31:11
found after I got further down the
00:31:14
canyon it seemed like the tracks were
00:31:16
real fresh I had a a real strange
00:31:19
feeling the hair stood up on my arms and
00:31:22
I had an intense feeling that he was
00:31:23
sitting watching me come here
00:31:28
trackers discovered another puzzling
00:31:30
clue on the second day once again David
00:31:34
had built a small pyramid this time he
00:31:37
left behind his gold Rolex watch and two
00:31:40
quarters I don't know what that means
00:31:43
must be something to do with this
00:31:44
religion the coins and David's watch
00:31:47
were found here about 1/4 Mile from the
00:31:50
first pyramid approximately 3 m to the
00:31:53
north another clue was
00:31:56
discovered
00:31:58
Searchers Came Upon a strange sequence
00:32:00
of numbers written in the sand these
00:32:03
numbers called the Fibonacci series are
00:32:06
used by stock market analysts the last
00:32:09
number in the sequence should have been
00:32:11
21 oddly David wrote
00:32:15
18 he knew better than that so it's one
00:32:18
of the Mysteries is why would he write
00:32:20
18 instead of
00:32:22
21 David's family believes the number 18
00:32:25
may have been David's way of telling
00:32:27
them that he was in
00:32:29
trouble in fact his car was found at
00:32:32
mile marker 18 and during his senior
00:32:35
year in college 18 was David's uniform
00:32:40
number on the final day of the search
00:32:43
blood hounds tracked David sent over the
00:32:45
rocky desert back to Highway 80 at the
00:32:49
intersection of Highway 80 and
00:32:51
Interstate 10 David's Trail suddenly
00:32:55
ended this was about 13 Mi north of
00:32:58
where's car had been found we took it to
00:33:01
be a hopeful sign that he had hitchhiked
00:33:04
out or that somebody given him a ride
00:33:05
and that was the only thing we could
00:33:07
understand that would mean why the scent
00:33:09
disappeared like it
00:33:12
did well I just kept feeling that
00:33:15
everything was there to let us know what
00:33:18
had happened but we just weren't seeing
00:33:24
it what could they have been missing
00:33:27
Carol and Harry Stone went through the
00:33:29
items David left in his car one of the
00:33:32
things they found was a very strange
00:33:35
note the note said they think the word
00:33:39
is in the safe six knives in Rob's room
00:33:44
you buys your tea and you takes your
00:33:46
chances
00:33:49
Halloween and that was the day he
00:33:50
disappeared which was October 31st
00:33:55
Halloween
00:33:57
what was the meaning behind the strange
00:33:59
clues that David left across the desert
00:34:03
and what became of him after he reached
00:34:05
the intersection of Highway 80 and
00:34:07
Interstate
00:34:15

there were no signs of Foul

what happened to David remains a

00:35:12
laap on a previous program We examined
00:35:16
the case of a Florida Widow we called
00:35:17
Mrs K she claimed that she was romanced
00:35:21
and then swindled by a man named Arthur
00:35:25
Frankford after a 4-we courtship
00:35:28
Frankfurt convinced Mrs K to let him
00:35:30
move
00:35:32
in never once was I suspicious of any
00:35:35
move that he made as far as to question
00:35:37
his character who he was and he was that
00:35:41
he was a liar and a
00:35:42
thief but one day while Mrs K was at
00:35:46
work Frankford disappeared and allegedly
00:35:49
stole jewelry worth over
00:35:52
$4,000 as well as many personal items
00:35:55
belonging to Mrs K's late
00:35:58
husband Arthur Frankford was wanted by
00:36:01

00:36:20
two viewers called to report that they
00:36:22
recognized Arthur
00:36:24
Frankford the individual said I know
00:36:27
where Arthur Frankfurt is I'm his ex-
00:36:29
brother-in-law we received another call
00:36:32
about 20 minutes later from a white
00:36:33
female says Arthur Frankford lives next
00:36:36
door to me in Whitley Kentucky this was
00:36:39
the confirmation call that I was looking
00:36:41
for at that time uh I knew we had our
00:36:46
man just 2 hours later Frankfurt was
00:36:49
arrested at his home in Kentucky he was
00:36:52
living under the assumed name James
00:36:54
Ferguson with his brand new wife of two
00:36:57
months during his search at frankfurt's
00:37:00
home police found identification and
00:37:02
credit cards with different names they
00:37:05
also found a handgun that may have been
00:37:07
stolen from Mrs K's Home Police
00:37:11
ultimately determined that Arthur
00:37:12
frankfurt's real name was Harry Fielding

00:37:43
Brown also known as
00:37:47
Thumper according to investigators he
00:37:50
operated meth labs across the
00:37:53
country there normal mode of operation
00:37:57
would be to have any one of his cronies
00:37:59
set up the lab for him just basically
00:38:01
have all the chemicals and U all the
00:38:03
Necessities on hand so when he shows up
00:38:05
he would not have to do any manual labor
00:38:07
type operations he just gets right to
00:38:09
the Cook gets it done and gets out of
00:38:10
the area and takes his rewards with
00:38:13
him Thumper was a charter member of a
00:38:16
motorcycle gang known as the hessin he
00:38:19
was a federal fugitive with outstanding
00:38:22
warrants in California Tennessee and
00:38:25
Oregon
00:38:29
Thumper managed to elude detection but
00:38:33
after a long Stakeout he was tracked to
00:38:35
a lab near Lancaster
00:38:38
California we observed Jonathan John
00:38:40
Brown carrying 6 five gallon containers
00:38:43
of acetone he had about 30 gallons of
00:38:45
acetone which is quite a sizable amount
00:38:48
and by the fact that he had such a
00:38:50
sizable quantity would indicate to us
00:38:52
that this was a uh sizable meth lab
00:38:57
as Brown pulled away in his truck the
00:39:00
police closed in out the car hands to
00:39:03
the roof Thumper was
00:39:07
arrested he was charged with possession
00:39:09
of meth and cited for outstanding
00:39:12
traffic
00:39:16
citations police later discovered that
00:39:18
Thumper had a large secret drug lab but
00:39:22
by then Thumper was free on Bond and
00:39:25
vanished methamphetamine on a street
00:39:28
coming directly from a lab would sell
00:39:31
for approximately $10,000 a
00:39:35
pound for photographs let's start with
00:39:37
overall police estimated that this crude
00:39:40
lab could have manufactured and
00:39:42
fetamines with a street value of more
00:39:44
than $1
00:39:49
million a few months later an informant
00:39:51
told investigators that Thumper was
00:39:54
hiding out at a remote drug lab
00:39:56
in Medford
00:39:59
Oregon forcing the door open with the
00:40:01
the door Ram the enter team received
00:40:04
gunfire from
00:40:06
[Applause]
00:40:09
inside two police officers were wounded
00:40:12
and one gang member was
00:40:14
killed we're about to introduce chemical
00:40:17
weapons into the house come out slowly
00:40:19
the gun that will end it when police
00:40:20
used tear gas and the people in the
00:40:23
house finally
00:40:25
surrender
00:40:27
when officers searched the property they
00:40:29
found a crude lab but no Thumper Thumper
00:40:33
was a regor on the premises that stayed
00:40:36
there quite often and uh normally for
00:40:38
long periods of time and was there as
00:40:40
early as one day prior to the raid and
00:40:42
if the raid would have been done one day
00:40:43
earlier we'd have captured him
00:40:46
too
00:40:48

00:41:13
