Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 2, Episode 17

March 09, 2017 / 42:54

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers four intriguing cases: the mysterious death of Charles Morgan, the disappearance of Claudia Kers, the treasure of Dutch Schultz, and a voodoo ritual performed by doctors.

The first case focuses on Charles Morgan, a businessman who returned home after three days missing, only to die mysteriously in the Arizona desert. Journalist Don Deo investigates, revealing Morgan's involvement in money laundering and suggesting that his death may have been a murder disguised as suicide.

Next, the episode discusses Claudia Kers, a travel writer who vanished in Jamaica after being stranded. Her belongings were found intact at the resort, leading her family to suspect foul play. Investigators track her scent to a bartender, Anthony Grant, but he is not considered a suspect.

The episode then shifts to the legendary treasure of gangster Dutch Schultz, who supposedly buried a fortune in Upstate New York. Despite numerous attempts to locate the treasure, it remains undiscovered, with many believing it could still be hidden.

Finally, the show presents a case where doctors performed a voodoo ritual to save a dying patient. The patient made a miraculous recovery, raising questions about the power of belief and the effectiveness of the ritual.

TL;DR

Four cases: Charles Morgan's mysterious death, Claudia Kers' disappearance, Dutch Schultz's buried treasure, and a voodoo ritual that saved a patient.

00:01:56
later but he was staggering weak and
00:01:59
unable to to

00:02:04
by writing notes he said that a drug had
00:02:07
been painted on the back of his throat
00:02:09
I'm going to call the police he was

00:02:23
to his bizarre account he said that he

was secretly working for the federal
00:02:28
government in his abduct
00:02:30
had taken his official
00:02:33

00:02:36
again 11 days later his body was found
00:02:40
in the Arizona
00:02:42
desert he had been shot once in the back
00:02:44
of the head curiously he was wearing a
00:02:47
bulletproof vest when Morgan's death was
00:02:50
ruled a suicide journalist Don Deo
00:02:54
became interested in the
00:02:56
story bear in mind he's wearing a
00:02:58
bulletproof vest at the time um I've
00:03:02
never seen in all my years as a
00:03:04
journalist uh a fell taking himself out
00:03:06
in the desert wearing a bulletproof vest

00:03:15

house but no one knows what they were

00:03:28
found when we this story our team
00:03:31
received more than 600 calls Don Deo
00:03:35
followed up on every lead and what he
00:03:37
learned was
00:03:40
incredible Morgan it turns out was
00:03:42
extensively involved in moneya
00:03:44
laundering activities through his escro
00:03:46
company he was doing well in excess of a
00:03:48
billion with a bee a billion dollars a
00:03:50
year in Gold alone over that period Well
00:03:53
in
00:03:56
excess and that much of it in fact uh
00:03:59
seems to have been coming out of
00:04:00
Southeast Asia uh at the end of the
00:04:02
Vietnam
00:04:05
War Charles
00:04:07
Morgan a lot of people seem to have been
00:04:09
involved including uh Renegade folks
00:04:12
from the US intelligence Community some
00:04:14
some CIA people who were doing stuff
00:04:16
perhaps undercover of the agency but
00:04:19
probably most likely to line their own
00:04:22
Pockets Charles Morgan kept a set of
00:04:25
duplicate records of all the illicit
00:04:27
transactions evidently he thought that
00:04:29
duplicates would be his life insurance
00:04:32
policy go there instead they became his
00:04:36
death
00:04:37
warrant Don Deo was convinced that
00:04:40
somebody wanted Morgan's silence
00:04:45
forever 3 months after we heard this
00:04:47
story another unusual death occurred

00:05:05
p.m. a man named Doug Johnston left for
00:05:08
work as usual he was assigned to the
00:05:10
night shift at a local computer Graphics
00:05:16
Company hi John hi you were the first
00:05:19
one on the scene an hour later Johnston
00:05:21
was found dead in the company parking
00:05:23
lot he had been shot once behind his
00:05:25
left ear from a distance of about 12 in
00:05:29
there was no gun found at the scene and
00:05:31
there was no Powder residue on Johnson's
00:05:34
hands as far as evidence the only thing
00:05:36
we found was a 25 caliber bullet casing
00:05:39
we can't classify it either a murder or
00:05:41
a suicide and it's being maintained in
00:05:44
our homicide files Doug would never
00:05:46
commit suicide he had just finished a
00:05:48
year of computerated drafting he
00:05:51
graduated with honors we had a future
00:05:53
starting all over again for us and
00:05:55
there's no way he would have committed
00:05:57
suicide
00:06:00
Don Deo lived across the street from the
00:06:03
parking lot where Doug Johnston was
00:06:05
killed his car was an old Toyota station
00:06:08
wagon that looked a lot like
00:06:13
Johnston's I contacted Phoenix PD uh
00:06:17
within a few days of the Johnston
00:06:18
shooting and told them that I was across
00:06:21
the street had a similar car and was in
00:06:23
fact working on a homicide case and the
00:06:26
initial read I got from Phoenix PD was
00:06:29
one of not really thinking that that had
00:06:31
any bearing on the Johnston shooting and
00:06:34
so although I continued to track it for
00:06:36
a while over a period of time I just
00:06:38
sort of put it out of my
00:06:41
mind the year after Doug Johnston was
00:06:43
shot Deo was contacted by Dan Castello a
00:06:47
writer from Washington
00:06:49
DC Deo agreed to share the information
00:06:52
he had uncovered concerning Charles
00:06:54
Morgan but before Deo can even mail his
00:06:57
research Casto was dead
00:07:03
head found in a hotel room his wrist cut
00:07:06
with a dozen deep
00:07:08
slashes police ruled the death a suicide
00:07:12
but to Deo and others it just didn't
00:07:15
make
00:07:17
sense Dan castello's brother is a doctor
00:07:20
the doctor tells us the Dan calero was
00:07:24
so squeamish that he was reluctant to
00:07:26
allow his brother to prick his finger it
00:07:28
up here quiash ing his wrists a dozen
00:07:30
times in a
00:07:32
bathtub and dying in that manner seems
00:07:35
to me the least likely of anything he
00:07:38
could possibly have
00:07:41
done these guys don't offer much they
00:07:44
don't volunteer
00:07:46
information okay 6 months after Dan
00:07:49
calero's death another journalist warned
00:07:52
Deo that his own life was in danger and
00:07:55
the word I got back was that they did
00:07:57
think they were getting you when they
00:07:58
got that guy
00:07:59
[Music]
00:08:01
these are the exact words there have
00:08:03
been and there still are contracts out
00:08:05
to kill you it's a shocker when somebody
00:08:08
calls you up and says uh you're about to
00:08:10
be killed that doesn't mean it's going
00:08:11
to happen tomorrow my colleague told me
00:08:13
that uh looked like I had a problem uh
00:08:16
that he understood from his CIA contact
00:08:18
that whatever it was it involved
00:08:20
something I was looking at that had both
00:08:22
CIA and organized crime
00:08:25
dimensions and uh that I could be in in
00:08:29
some trouble and to get my head down
00:08:30
maybe even get out of there for a while
00:08:32
until he could figure out what was uh
00:08:34
what was happening it's on the street
00:08:36
and alter my later two other sources one
00:08:39
from the CIA and one from Israeli
00:08:42
intelligence confirmed the that
00:08:45
threats Deo believed that he was
00:08:48
targeted because of his work on the
00:08:50
Charles Morgan case if so Doug Johnston
00:08:53
may have been an innocent victim of a
00:08:56
contract that meant for Deo
00:09:01
his parking lot is right across the
00:09:02
street from my parking
00:09:04
lot he was driving a car much like my
00:09:08
car and this was not just some random
00:09:10
shooting this was a a shooting that had
00:09:12
all the characteristics of a very
00:09:13
professional killing this was a a single
00:09:16
shot 25 caliber back of the left ear um

very slick uh murder

that was intended for me I feel terrible
00:09:35
about it and uh I feel very awful for
00:09:39
his wife and and
00:09:42
family there's so much evidence that
00:09:45
these people were After Dawn instead of
00:09:48
my husband it wasn't a gang related
00:09:51
shooting or suicide or anything and it
00:09:55
all kind of fits together that they were
00:09:57
After Dawn and my husband just happened
00:09:59
to be in the wrong
00:10:01
place uh I am not thrilled to think that
00:10:05
there could be quote a highlevel CIA
00:10:07
official close quote who knows about
00:10:10
this uh who is not himself taking
00:10:12
official actions to correct it and
00:10:15
clearly if there are people in the US
00:10:17
government who know and disapprove of
00:10:19
this sort of thing then they damn well
00:10:22
should get off their butts and do

00:10:58
business trip to Havana Cuba was
00:11:01
suddenly canceled when we found out that
00:11:03
we weren't going to Cuba we were really
00:11:05
really upset I had assignments Claud was
00:11:09
there on work we were also concerned
00:11:12
because when they told us we couldn't go
00:11:13
they also told us we couldn't get back
00:11:15
to New
00:11:17
York just prior to her trip Claudia had
00:11:20
landed her dream job with Frommer's
00:11:22
travel guides although she was stranded
00:11:25
in Jamaica Claudia decided to make the
00:11:27
best of it and then get back to New York
00:11:29
as soon as possible of the location so L
00:11:32
where you come from We're from New York
00:11:35
New York you're from New York clo made
00:11:37
friends with Anthony Grant one of the
00:11:39
Resort's
00:11:42
bartenders she was a big fan of reg
00:11:45
music and Grant reportedly offered to
00:11:47
take her to a nearby
00:11:50
club she told me that she had gone out
00:11:53
with one of the bartenders who turns out
00:11:54
to be Anthony Grant well okay so you
00:11:57
remember the bartend Tanya managed to
00:11:59
book a flight back to New York and
00:12:01
Claudia was supposed to catch a later
00:12:03
flight they agreed to meet up once
00:12:05
Claudia
00:12:07
returned you think I'm going to be able
00:12:09
to find somebody that can braid my hair
00:12:10
just up the way there a little Claudia
00:12:12
was reportedly GL seen by a lifeguard on
00:12:14
a local Beach away from the resort then
00:12:18
she
00:12:22
disappeared she didn't when her parents
00:12:25
found out that she hadn't show up for
00:12:27
work in New York they called the resort
00:12:30
call her
00:12:32
mother hotel maids had reported Claudia
00:12:34
missing after noticing that she hadn't
00:12:36
slept in her bed for several days but
00:12:39
everything in her room seemed normal all
00:12:42
her clothes except one bathing suit were
00:12:44
neatly packed away in her suitcase her
00:12:47
passport credit card cell phone and $180
00:12:51
cash were recovered from the hotel
00:12:54
safe probably the most devastating piece
00:12:56
of news initially was that all of her
00:12:58
belong longings were in her room I mean
00:13:01
we would rather have heard that some of
00:13:03
her things were missing and then we
00:13:04
would have thought maybe she went
00:13:05
somewhere else when we heard the news
00:13:07
that Claudia's things were all in her
00:13:09
room and they didn't know where she was
00:13:11
it's not that's not Claudia Claudia's
00:13:14
really organized orderly person if she
00:13:18
was planning to go off somewhere she
00:13:20
would have made a phone call she would
00:13:21
have let us know we felt ear very early
00:13:25
on that something happened to her that
00:13:27
something just was not right
00:13:30
Claudia's parents were on the next plane
00:13:32
to
00:13:34
Jamaica I wonder if you could tell me if
00:13:37
you've seen my daughter they hit one
00:13:39
dead end after another beginning at the
00:13:42
resort where Claudia had been
00:13:45
staying as a security precaution the
00:13:47
license plates of all vehicles entering
00:13:49
and leaving the resort are carefully
00:13:52
recorded in a log book but the log book
00:13:55
for the month that Claudia disappeared
00:13:57
cannot be found
00:13:59
the videotape from a surveillance camera
00:14:01
mounted near Claudia's room had been
00:14:04
recorded
00:14:05
over room 621 the room where Claudia
00:14:09
stayed was cleared by housekeeping and
00:14:12
hotel security before it could be
00:14:14
processed for Clues Z that
00:14:16
up authorities had no evidence of file
00:14:20
play so they began to investigate the
00:14:22
possibility that Claudia had drowned
00:14:25
it's not impossible but I would say it's
00:14:27
highly unlikely
00:14:29
uh that area it's not deep and uh the
00:14:34
current is not very strong and if
00:14:36
something should go wrong with someone
00:14:38
there the body would be found
00:14:41
easily news of Claudia's disappearance
00:14:44
spread through Jamaica many sightings of
00:14:46
a woman fitting her description began to
00:14:49
suggest another
00:14:51
possibility many local residents believe
00:14:54
that Claudia may have chosen to run away
00:14:57
to live in the Hills with a Jamaican
00:14:59
lover we know she wouldn't do that she
00:15:03
had no reason to escape as as has been
00:15:06
said she loved her life you know her
00:15:08
family her friends her new apartment
00:15:10
everything was going right for her so
00:15:12
there was nothing to escape we got a
00:15:14
call that Claudia went off with r man in
00:15:17
some hills in
00:15:20
Jamaica we have checked several areas we
00:15:23
have spoken to a number of rest
00:15:25
ofans everything cool all righty we just
00:15:28
want some help from my in fact we have
00:15:29
gone to an area where the report said
00:15:31
she was take a look and there's no
00:15:34
information to suggest that Claudia kers
00:15:38
was ever seen in that area if you ever
00:15:41
see her or hear anybody say anything
00:15:43
about her you know youever find

00:16:12
a pair of gloves and a knife
00:16:16

00:16:24
trunk the Articles found Boots knife
00:16:28
material that made up the trunk of the
00:16:30
car was removed by the evidence the FBI
00:16:33

00:16:36
the FBI forensic laboratory in the
00:16:38
states it was checked for signs of human
00:16:42
blood nothing was
00:16:45
found Anthony Grant was investigated and
00:16:48
polygraphed but the results were
00:16:50
inconclusive at this time Grant is not
00:16:53
considered a suspect in Claudia kok's
00:16:55
disappearance yes or
00:16:57
no we
00:16:59
interviewed him for several
00:17:01
weeks we just don't find enough evidence
00:17:06

00:17:13
her disappearance other than that he was
00:17:16

her no one disappears from the face of
00:17:20
the Earth in a town of 3,000 people
00:17:23
without one other person knowing it we
00:17:25
do believe that Anthony Grant the
00:17:27
bartender introduced her to someone who
00:17:30
has a much better idea of what happened
00:17:32
we believe Anthony Grant probably knows
00:17:34
something as
00:17:36
well you know she could be
00:17:38
anywhere the kers shocks are still
00:17:41
looking for their daughter and have
00:17:42
offered a $50,000 reward in this

the legendary treasure of Dutch
00:18:02
Schultz it might be in Upstate New York
00:18:05
just waiting to be
00:18:10
[Music]
00:18:15
found 100 Mil north of New York
00:18:20
City two shadowy figures dig along the
00:18:23
banks of a creek on a moonless
00:18:25
night the man doing all the work is
00:18:28
Bernard frosen CR nicknamed Lulu his
00:18:32
boss is Dutch
00:18:34
Schultz King of the New York
00:18:38
underworld according to the legend the
00:18:41
Dutchman buried a strong box that night
00:18:43
it contained cash bonds diamonds and
00:18:46
gold coins today it would be worth more
00:18:50
than $50
00:18:52
million it's a lot of
00:18:56
loot it all started when prohibition was
00:18:59
passed in
00:19:03
[Music]
00:19:05
1919 the manufacturer and distribution
00:19:08
of boot late liquor made Millions for
00:19:11
gangsters like Legs Diamond lucky
00:19:14
luchano Al Capone and Dutch
00:19:20
Schultz Schultz whose real name was
00:19:23
Arthur flegenheimer was one of the
00:19:26
toughest
00:19:29
Dutch Schultz was a very successful and
00:19:31
widespread Bootlegger uh owned a string
00:19:34
of speak easys and then quickly branched
00:19:36
out into narcotics the numbers Racket
00:19:39
and the protection
00:19:40
racket Schulz was an extremely dangerous
00:19:43
gangster he was reported to have had 136
00:19:47
people
00:19:48
killed and that's over a criminal career
00:19:51
of less than 10
00:19:53
years at the end of The Roaring 20s
00:19:56
Dutch Schultz's criminal Empire was
00:19:58
making more than $20 million a year and
00:20:00
the IRS knew it he was indicted by a
00:20:03
grand jury for income tax evasion and
00:20:06
that's when the Dutchman took steps to
00:20:09
protect his
00:20:10
money at the time Dutch Schultz was
00:20:13
facing long prison sentence and he
00:20:16
decided that he needed a nest EG to fall
00:20:19
back on in case he was sent to
00:20:22
prison so he had his top lieutenants
00:20:26
clean out his safety deposit boxes and G
00:20:28
GA together whatever cash they could
00:20:30
from his available bank accounts
00:20:31
beautiful looks good
00:20:33
boss at a Hideway in Connecticut Dutch
00:20:37
Lulu Rosen CR and a man named Marty
00:20:40
Kroner packed bundles of1 th000 bills
00:20:44
negotiable liberty bonds gold coins
00:20:46
diamonds and other gems into a
00:20:49
steel-plated strong
00:20:51
box hey
00:20:53
M don't give me something to drink Dutch
00:20:56
Schultz had the only key
00:21:02
that night Dutch and Lulu traveled to
00:21:05
Phoenicia New York a town Dutch knew
00:21:07
from his bootlegging
00:21:11
days the Dutchman swore Lulu to secrecy
00:21:14
and then supposedly marked the site by
00:21:16
carving an X into the trunk of a nearby
00:21:18
[Music]
00:21:20
tree but Lulu couldn't keep his mouth
00:21:24
shut he told his friend Marty kampir
00:21:27
where the treasure was married I
00:21:29
shouldn't tell you this but I think it'd
00:21:30
be good for somebody else to know know
00:21:33
what remember that strong box some say
00:21:36
that Lulu even Drew Marty a map what
00:21:38
about
00:21:44
it I ain't got to worry about you doing
00:21:46
anything stupid do I me and the Dutchman
00:21:49
were like this and he's going to take
00:21:51
care of me listen rumors of Dutch's
00:21:53
secret treasure filtered through New
00:21:55
York I'll be back in just a minute but
00:21:56
the Dutchmen had other problems
00:22:00
baby Manhattan da Thomas E dwey was
00:22:03
determined to further his political
00:22:05
career by destroying Dutch Schultz and
00:22:08
his illegal
00:22:10
Empire Schultz finally surrendered to
00:22:13
authorities in Aly New York his first
00:22:16
trial ended with a hung
00:22:18
jury at his second trial he was
00:22:21
acquitted of all charges some suspected
00:22:25
jury tampering
00:22:29
after the AC quiddle Dutch Schultz moved
00:22:31
his headquarters to a Tavern he owned in
00:22:33
Newark New Jersey the palace Chop House
00:22:37
and then he went on a bloody Killing
00:22:39
Spree to regain control of his
00:22:42
Empire and that angered the powerful New
00:22:45
York crime
00:22:47
syndicate The Syndicate was a
00:22:49
confederation of of New York City
00:22:51
Mobsters who controll virtually all the
00:22:53
crime in the Manhattan area and they
00:22:56
were very afraid that he was bringing
00:22:58
additional heat upon them with these
00:23:01
killings The Syndicate took steps to
00:23:04
turn down the heat
00:23:14
[Music]
00:23:33
Dutch Schultz died at 8:35 p.m. on
00:23:36
October 24th
00:23:38
1935 almost 22 hours after he had been
00:23:41
shot he was just 33 years old his
00:23:44
bodyguard Lulu Rosen cratz died hours
00:23:47
earlier and that left only one man who
00:23:50
knew where the treasure was buried Marty
00:23:55
cromier the night of the Chop House
00:23:57
murders two henchman caught up with
00:23:59
Marty at a barber shop in New York
00:24:02
City gunned him down and took the map
00:24:04
Kier survived the attack but he was
00:24:07
never able to locate the treasure
00:24:08
without the map Jake Shapiro made
00:24:11
several attempts at Finding the Treasure
00:24:13
from the map uh as did several other
00:24:15
gangsters of the year but none were
00:24:17
successful if people knew about it
00:24:19
Schultz is as close as associates they
00:24:22
told other people I would suspect
00:24:24
strongly that it been retrieved long
00:24:26
before now I personally I believe The
00:24:28
Treasure of Dutch Schultz was
00:24:30
buried and there's a good possibility
00:24:33
that it still exists
00:24:36
today because uh even though the liberty
00:24:39
bonds have long since matured in the
00:24:41
last 60 plus years none have ever been
00:24:46
redeemed perhaps the Dutchman's treasure
00:24:48
is still buried in Upstate New York if
00:24:52
so someone who finds a tree with an ax
00:24:54
carved into it might just hit the
00:24:56
jackpot

00:25:02
next Voodoo at a modern-day Hospital in
00:25:05
a last ditch attempt to save a dying
00:25:13
[Music]
00:25:16
patient the word voodoo brings to mind
00:25:18
dark rituals and mysterious spells but
00:25:22
in the story you were about to see two
00:25:24
medical doctors create their own Voodoo
00:25:27
ceremony in a last Stitch effort to save
00:25:30
a dying
00:25:33
man Dallas
00:25:35
Texas Dr Larry dossy was a young intern
00:25:39
when a patient came to him with a
00:25:40
mysterious illness you say you've been
00:25:42
uh losing weight right it's any pain
00:25:47
anywhere not really sometimes when I
00:25:50
cough okay we're going to run some tests
00:25:53
we're going to do some blood tests and
00:25:54
some x-rays that sort of thing we're
00:25:56
going to find out what your problem is
00:25:57
okay
00:25:58
thank you I embarked on a an elaborate
00:26:02
evaluation a medical workup to uncover
00:26:04
the cause of the problem and this man's
00:26:07
chart just began to get thicker and
00:26:09
thicker with normal tests Mr Bennett I
00:26:12
don't understand it I've run every test
00:26:15
I know how I've performed every exam I
00:26:17
know how and they all come up normal how
00:26:19
do you feel not good at all you don't
00:26:22
you don't look
00:26:23
good I just don't know what to do Dr
00:26:27
dossy called in a colleague Dr William
00:26:29
Hensley for a consultation and I wanted
00:26:32
to come see you to find out possibly if
00:26:33
anything that you know of unusual has
00:26:36
happened to you such as an insect bite
00:26:38
or anything of that
00:26:42
sort L do you believe and
00:26:46
whoo it was a strange question but the
00:26:49
patient had asked the right
00:26:53
doctor as a child Dr Hensley lived at
00:26:57
his grandmother's sprawling South Texas
00:26:59
[Music]
00:27:02
ranch there he got to know a woman named
00:27:05
Mary reputed to be a voodoo queen The
00:27:08
Experience convinced him that Voodoo had
00:27:11
a dramatic effect on those who believe
00:27:13
in its power a while back I went to see
00:27:17
aita the patient then told Dr Hensley
00:27:20
that he recently refused to pay a
00:27:22
fortune teller who had given him a
00:27:26
reading he thought she had cursed with a
00:27:28
death hex I start feeling bad feeling
00:27:31
real bad you really believe this I
00:27:34
believe she put a dying hex on me after
00:27:36
when he started talking about the
00:27:38
fortune teller he became very
00:27:40
emotional frightened there really was a
00:27:44
possibility that someone with with that
00:27:45
strong a belief system could actually be
00:27:48
frightened to death you're not going to
00:27:50
believe what he told
00:27:53
me let's go talk over here you know I
00:27:57
consider myself a fair thoro physician
00:27:59
but yet I was blind to the possibility
00:28:02
that anything like a hexing or a cursing
00:28:04
had taken place so this just didn't have
00:28:06
a place in the way I thought the world
00:28:09
[Music]
00:28:10
worked but Dr Hensley had seen enough as
00:28:13
a child to perform a ritual that
00:28:15
incorporated elements of
00:28:17
voodoo well I don't know that sounds
00:28:19
pretty far out the thing is if I was
00:28:21
confronted with something for me that
00:28:24
was very very strange I realized though
00:28:27
that with better do something because
00:28:29
this man was
00:28:31
dying we were fearful and we were
00:28:34
convinced at the time that we could be
00:28:37
severely reprimanded if not fired
00:28:40
therefore we did this at the slow time
00:28:43
of the week which was late Saturday
00:28:45
night so no one would witness this
00:28:48
Ceremony this dexing
00:28:50
[Music]
00:28:54
ritual I knew that there had to be a
00:28:56
fire
00:28:58
I knew that we had to have a body
00:29:00
part and I knew that we had to convince
00:29:02
him that we were
00:29:05
Superior and could overcome the uh the
00:29:09
hex that been put on
00:29:10
him what he didn't know was how
00:29:13
convincing it would be to a True
00:29:17
Believer the doctors needed fire they
00:29:20
lit a drug called
00:29:23
mandelamine This Magic is more powerful
00:29:26
than any that has come before it they
00:29:27
needed a lock of
00:29:31
hair and finally the incantation as your
00:29:35
hair burns the hex is
00:29:38
[Music]
00:29:41
removed Harold if you breathe word of
00:29:43
this to anyone the hex will return
00:29:50
twofold good morning something for you
00:29:53
oh and let me get this overnight the
00:29:55
patient made an incredible recovery can
00:29:59
I have some ham and eggs too sure that's
00:30:01
what you want
00:30:03
Harold hi doctor hi how you feeling
00:30:06
today much much much better yeah it
00:30:08
looks like your appetite's back huh it
00:30:10
was genuine it was a cure overnight
00:30:13
literally overnight this man turned the
00:30:16
corner uh from death into life this was
00:30:19
your basic dramatic Miracle kind of cure
00:30:23
I don't believe that anything medically
00:30:24
cured
00:30:25
him uh and I don't know what did I I
00:30:28
know that that uh he believed so
00:30:31
strongly uh in in both uh what was
00:30:35
happening to him and what we were doing
00:30:37
to change what what was happening to him
00:30:39
that we were able
00:30:41
to
00:30:46
Prevail is it possible the voodoo worked
00:30:50
if not what actually did cure the
00:30:53
patient in order to understand why this
00:30:55
man lived we have to understand that
00:30:58
that belief is biology your belief
00:31:00
becomes your biology there's not the
00:31:03
Mind here and the body over here they're
00:31:04
not
00:31:05
separate so if you wanted to cure this
00:31:08
man you need not just work on the body
00:31:10
you could work with the belief system
00:31:12
this is what all Shaman do this is what
00:31:15
Dr Hensley
00:31:24
did coming up the body of a businessman
00:31:27
is found charred and riddled with
00:31:29
bullets and his only employee is nowhere
00:31:32
to be
00:31:34
[Music]
00:31:42
found on a previous broadcast we
00:31:46
profiled an Oklahoma couple Teresa and
00:31:48
Paul Stamper when they got married
00:31:51
Teresa thought he was a successful
00:31:54
businessman she had no idea Stamper was
00:31:57
also a victed felon with a violent
00:31:59
criminal past now I want to know who you
00:32:02
were with and I want to know it now
00:32:03
within 6 months Teresa's marriage became
00:32:05
a living nightmare Stamper accused her
00:32:08
of cheating on him and would often have
00:32:10
violent and uncontrollable rages you're
00:32:13
running around this crazy I don't know
00:32:15
you shut
00:32:20
up he was jealous and you had better be
00:32:23
here when I get
00:32:25
back I mean I could be sitting at we
00:32:28
could be sitting at a red light and I
00:32:29
could just turn and look at someone and
00:32:31
it could be a guy sitting in his car and
00:32:34
he would just double his fist up and
00:32:35
just hit me right in the
00:32:38
mouth I mean it was just it was Unreal
00:32:41
to the abuse that he did to
00:32:44
me after 2 years of almost constant
00:32:48
emotional and physical abuse Teresa
00:32:50
Found the courage to leave her
00:32:53
husband for the next 6 months he stalked
00:32:56
Teresa
00:32:58
night and
00:32:59
day and then one night Teresa and a
00:33:02
friend Chris Butler were heading home
00:33:05
after an evening out they were fooled
00:33:07
over by what they thought was the
00:33:10
highway
00:33:11
[Music]
00:33:16
[Music]
00:33:21
patrol Teresa honey you get out of the
00:33:23
car hey man she's not taking orders hey
00:33:25
you shut up what are you doing to my
00:33:26
wife anyway huh in your business put
00:33:29
down the gun get out of the car now come
00:33:32
no Chris oh my oh my God what are you
00:33:38
doing open the door I'll shoot you
00:33:40
through the window come on finally you
00:33:44
know he I was so scared that I just I
00:33:46
unlocked the door and he just grabbed me
00:33:48
around my neck and just forced me out of
00:33:51
the
00:33:54
car Chris had C too and he had yelled
00:33:58
don't leave me here you know Teresa
00:34:01
don't leave me here you know and there
00:34:03
was there wasn't anything I could
00:34:06
do Chris Butler survived the attack but
00:34:09
Paul stampler held Teresa hostage for 2
00:34:12
days before she managed to
00:34:15
escape Stamper was arrested at a bus
00:34:18
station but just 6 months later he broke
00:34:21
out of jail and
00:34:25
disappeared update
00:34:28
just minutes after this story aired the
00:34:30
FBI received information from several of
00:34:33
our viewers that Paul Snapper was living
00:34:35
in a suburb of Denver
00:34:38
Colorado one phone call was very
00:34:40
specific it had uh his Alias it had his
00:34:43
location his address his employment that
00:34:46
he was driving a semi TR Overland and
00:34:49
that brought an immediate response from
00:34:50
the Denver FBI so that we moved out
00:34:52
within the
00:34:55
hour just 3 hours later Stamper was
00:34:59
arrested as he left his home he had been
00:35:01
living in the Denver area for
00:35:03
approximately 4
00:35:08
years this is one of the more efficient
00:35:10
uh cost effective Speedy apprehensions
00:35:13
that we've ever made for us to uh not
00:35:15
have any idea early evening that this
00:35:18
individual is in the Denver area and by
00:35:21
11:30 he is captured he's off the
00:35:24
streets and he's on his way to Denver
00:35:26
City Jail that uh I think maybe close to
00:35:29
a record for
00:35:31
us Paul staer was returned to Oklahoma
00:35:34
and pled guilty to kidnapping attempted
00:35:36
murder and prison escape he received a
00:35:39
35-year
00:35:47
sentence in Odessa
00:35:50
Texas firefighters responding to a
00:35:53
routine call arrived to find a charred
00:35:56
corpse riddled with bullets The Remains
00:35:59
are later identified as Neil Jennings a
00:36:02
classic car buff from Dallas believe got
00:36:06
someone burned up
00:36:09
and
00:36:11
get two days earlier Jennings had
00:36:14
dropped by his brother's
00:36:16
house Neil this car looks great yeah
00:36:19
Bill helped me restore it did a pretty
00:36:21
good job pretty good job a man named
00:36:23
Bill Roberts was with him Neil had hired
00:36:26
Roberts to do the details on his latest
00:36:29
project a 1959 Ford
00:36:32
Thunderbird in private Neil L on that he
00:36:35
was having financial problems in fact he
00:36:38
could not even pay Roberts for his work
00:36:40
on the car Bye Bill glad to met you yeah
00:36:51
bye after the visit Neil Jennings and
00:36:54
Bill Roberts drove 300 mil to Odessa and
00:36:57
checked into a motel that was the last
00:37:00
time Neil was known to be
00:37:05
alive however Roberts was seen all over
00:37:09
Odessa engaged in a number of suspicious
00:37:13
activities an hour after arriving in
00:37:15
town he showed up at the home of a
00:37:17
friend named Jack hey Bill come on in
00:37:20
Roberts was sweating and acting nervous
00:37:23
he asked Jack if he could park the truck
00:37:26
in the back and go to to sleep oh sure
00:37:29
you can
00:37:31
bill the next morning Jack noticed that
00:37:34
Roberts was walking around the truck and
00:37:36
staring at the cargo bed which was
00:37:38
covered by a
00:37:40
tarp how doing after Roberts left Jack's
00:37:44
house he stopped at a rundown Motel
00:37:47
where he tried to sell Neil's truck for
00:37:50
$1,200 when he couldn't sell the truck
00:37:53
Roberts asked if he could park it in the
00:37:55
back of the motel hidden from view all
00:37:58
right well I appreciate that all right
00:38:00
yeah about 6 hours later bill Roberts
00:38:03
asked for another
00:38:05
favor listen I wonder if uh you might
00:38:07
have a pick and a shovel I could borrow
00:38:09
I need to fix a broken water line for an
00:38:11
old
00:38:12
lady sorry about that bill I don't think
00:38:14
we have a pick or a shovel around here
00:38:17
wish I could help you though that's okay
00:38:21
look I'll just going to see y a little
00:38:22
later
00:38:23
then then Roberts drove the truck to a
00:38:26
convenience store about a mile
00:38:28
away I was sitting on the store behind
00:38:31
the counter and uh bill came in and
00:38:34
asked me if he could park the truck
00:38:35
behind cuz he's uh the truck was
00:38:37
overheated thank you I'm just going to I
00:38:39
said go ahead no
00:38:41
problem that be
00:38:43
[Music]
00:38:49
all 15 minutes later Saul heard two
00:38:52
gunshots in the
00:38:54
distance 45 minutes passed then then
00:38:57
Roberts came back this time with a large
00:39:00
watt of cash
00:39:02
[Music]
00:39:04
night Robert spent the night in Neil's
00:39:07
truck behind the
00:39:09
motel Saturday night he came back and uh
00:39:13
he said he' done done the
00:39:15
job he acted real
00:39:18
nervous you Bill all right the next
00:39:21
morning he asked for yet another favor
00:39:24
would it be okay if I did some laundry
00:39:27
and I noticed that blood was on his
00:39:29
shirt well I didn't think anything about
00:39:31
it because you know it just looked like
00:39:32
maybe he cut his and wiped it off on his
00:39:35
shirt once you follow me and I'll show
00:39:36
you how to use this washer so I told him
00:39:39
okay you know yeah you can use the
00:39:43
laundry a few minutes later another
00:39:45
Resident of the motel noticed blood on
00:39:48
the back bumper of Neil's
00:39:52
pickup around noon Roberts left the
00:39:55
motel and never reached
00:40:00
turned 8 hours later the police were at
00:40:03
the scene of the fire
00:40:07
burned our investigation at the scene
00:40:09
showed there was two pools of
00:40:13
blood we found shotgun shell casings and
00:40:17
wading there at the
00:40:20
scene there was drag marks leading
00:40:24
from uh the parking lot over to through
00:40:27
the concrete slab where Neil was was
00:40:31
actually found on
00:40:33
fire there's no doubt in her mind that
00:40:36
the Fatal shots happened in that parking
00:40:42
lot sheriff's deputies believe that bill
00:40:45
Roberts shot Neil Jennings on Saturday
00:40:47
night and hid the body in a trash Heap
00:40:50
for some reason he waited 24 hours to
00:40:53
set Neil's body on fire
00:41:03
Robert's apparent motive was to murder
00:41:05
Neil Jennings so that he could steal his
00:41:08
truck and sell
00:41:10
it police later learned that bill
00:41:13
Roberts was actually Bill
00:41:15
Blackwell who had served time for Larsen
00:41:18
and theft Blackwell was wed by the Texas
00:41:21
Department of Corrections on a parole
00:41:26
violation Blackwell had apparently left
00:41:28
Odessa within 24 hours of setting the
00:41:33
fire he then drove to alberquerque New
00:41:35
Mexico where he sold Jennings truck at a
00:41:39
flea
00:41:40
market
00:41:43
update Bill Blackwell was using an alias
00:41:46
when he was jailed briefly on a weapons
00:41:48
charge in North
00:41:51
Carolina by the time a fingerprint check
00:41:53
revealed his true identity Blackwell was
00:41:56
on the Run
00:41:59
run authorities tracked him a thousand
00:42:02
miles to Texas where he was finally
00:42:04
arrested Blackwell pleaded guilty to the
00:42:07
murder of Neil Jennings and was
