Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 5, Episode 22

March 09, 2017 / 42:49

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers five cases: the disappearance of John Chek, the murders of Jay Cook and Tanya Van Kenborg, the ghost blimp incident, the search for Jim Bomgarden's twin, and a serial killer in New Orleans.

John Chek, a successful CFO from Memphis, vanished without a trace after a stressful period at work. His abandoned car was found, but theories of suicide were dismissed by family and friends. A truck driver named Ron Jackson later recognized Chek's face on a missing persons flyer after having breakfast with a drifter who resembled him.

Jay Cook and Tanya Van Kenborg, two young lovers from Canada, went missing during their romantic getaway in Washington State. Their bodies were later discovered, and disturbing greeting cards were sent to their families, taunting them about the murders.

The ghost blimp incident involved a Navy blimp that crashed in San Francisco during World War II, with its crew mysteriously disappearing. Investigators found no signs of the pilots, leading to various theories about their fate.

Jim Bomgarden has been haunted by sightings of a man who looks just like him. After discovering he has a twin brother, Jim sought to find him but passed away before they could meet.

TL;DR

Five mysterious cases include a missing CFO, murdered lovers, a ghost blimp, a search for a twin, and a serial killer in New Orleans.

Memphis
00:01:36
Tennessee 26-year-old John Chek seemed
00:01:40
destined for Success fresh out of
00:01:42
business school he had been hired as the
00:01:44
Chief Financial Officer for one of
00:01:47
Tennessee's largest real estate
00:01:50
companies never in their wildest dreams
00:01:54
that John cheek's family and friends
00:01:56
imagined that he would wind up the focus
00:01:59
of an endless missing person search his
00:02:02
face peering out from thousands of
00:02:04
Flyers plastered all over their
00:02:08
hometown by the age of 28 John had
00:02:12
bought this house in East Memphis and
00:02:14
was hard at work putting together the
00:02:17
deal of a lifetime for months Jan had
00:02:20
helped lay the groundwork to take his
00:02:22
company public he was working 18 hours a
00:02:25
day and flying all over the world to
00:02:27
meet with
00:02:28
investors finally the deal was on the
00:02:32
verge of closing millions of dollars
00:02:34
were on the line the company was about
00:02:38
to be thrust into the national Spotlight
00:02:40
literally
00:02:42
overnight John was very proud of his
00:02:46
accomplishment of getting this job and
00:02:48
he worked very hard non-stop almost to
00:02:52
see that his duties were fulfilled and
00:02:55
that every eye was dotted and every tea
00:02:57
was
00:02:58
crossed but one winter day John didn't
00:03:01
show up for work and surprise quickly
00:03:04
turned to concern at company
00:03:08
headquarters it was out of character and
00:03:10
then as the day went on and then that
00:03:14
night uh when no one had heard from John
00:03:17
we began to know that something terribly
00:03:20
was
00:03:21
wrong early the next morning John's car
00:03:24
was found abandoned on Interstate 55
00:03:27
where the highway crosses over the
00:03:29
Mississippi River it was about 12 mi
00:03:32
from John's
00:03:34
home there was no signs of Foul Play on
00:03:36
the car the car was checked uh
00:03:38
everything appeared to be intact the
00:03:40
cheek family examined a car also and it
00:03:43
appeared to be just the way John would
00:03:45
have left
00:03:47
it police theorized that John had
00:03:49
committed suicide by jumping into the
00:03:52
rapid Waters of the Mississippi River
00:03:55
however Searchers of the river and its
00:03:57
banks failed to locate his body and to
00:04:00
those who knew him best suicide seemed
00:04:02
to be out of the
00:04:05
[Applause]
00:04:06
question we didn't believe that he could
00:04:09
be normal right up until 11:00 p.m. one
00:04:12
night and then all of a sudden jump off
00:04:14
the bridge the next day we were just
00:04:17
left with the same position we are right
00:04:19
now that it was just some big mystery
00:04:20
had happened to him and we didn't know
00:04:23
what two months passed with no leads no
00:04:26
word from John and no reason to believe
00:04:28
that he was EV been
00:04:31
alive until a trucker named Ron Jackson
00:04:35
rolled into
00:04:37
town over the years Ron had seen
00:04:39
hundreds of missing persons Flyers at
00:04:42
truck stops all across the country so he
00:04:45
was stunned when he saw the face of
00:04:47
someone that he actually
00:04:51
recognized the young man that he had met
00:04:54
just the day
00:04:56
before you never really expected to jump
00:04:59
right out and say hey I know this person
00:05:01
I had breakfast with this person the
00:05:03
other morning so that was added to my
00:05:05
surprise of seeing this poster and this
00:05:07
identity was so strong and it just kind
00:05:09
of grabbed a hold of me and shook me
00:05:10
like this is the individual
00:05:17
period do you have breakfast yet no I
00:05:21
have no money Brown found the young
00:05:23
Drifter sleeping at a Virginia Truck
00:05:25
Stop 700 mil from John chek's hometown
00:05:29
this morning my first impression of this
00:05:31
man when I saw him is that he was not
00:05:33
homeless people he was clean and the
00:05:36
white shirt was so white it looked like
00:05:38
had just come out of the laundry okay
00:05:41
Help Yourself he didn't tell Ron his
00:05:43
name but the man did say that he had
00:05:46
spent some time in an Arkansas homeless
00:05:48
shelter there for a while I didn't press
00:05:51
him he just was rambling on in cafeteria
00:05:54
line I would have to say that he was
00:05:57
definitely not 100% in all mental
00:06:02
capabilities you have a good breakfast
00:06:04
yeah where you
00:06:06
headed Richmond Richmond Ron and The
00:06:09
Drifter were headed in opposite
00:06:12
directions good
00:06:15
luck outside the cafeteria they said
00:06:20
goodbye well there were several things
00:06:22
about the encounter that made us feel
00:06:24
optimistic that it was a positive
00:06:26
identification for John the first was
00:06:29
the white shirt and tie because that
00:06:31
would be typical for him to be wearing
00:06:33
that because that's what he wore every
00:06:35
day he also mentioned the fact that he
00:06:37
used very correct English and sounded
00:06:39
like he was well educated person which
00:06:41
was obviously correct for John's parents
00:06:45
the most promising detail was Ron's
00:06:47
description of the young man's shoes
00:06:50
slipon moccasins John had a pair that
00:06:53
was identical and his parents believed
00:06:55
that he might be wearing them we knew
00:06:58
that John had a pair of shoes like this
00:07:01
we had not mentioned that to anyone up
00:07:04
until this point in time immediately my
00:07:06
thought was we've got to find him quick
00:07:08
and get him home he's uh wandering
00:07:11
around and not knowing who he
00:07:13
is no one could be sure why John
00:07:16
vanished his father believes that he
00:07:19
suffered a sudden episode of stress
00:07:22
induced Amnesia it's sort of a
00:07:25
self-preservation mechanism if something
00:07:27
in their past has become so stressful
00:07:29
that they can't stand it any longer then
00:07:31
that's how they deal with it they just
00:07:33
block it all out and you're no longer
00:07:35
John Chek and you're no longer a
00:07:36
financial officer and you no longer
00:07:38
putting together a big
00:07:40
deal since Ron Jackson's sighting there
00:07:44
has been no other sign of John
00:07:47
cheek he has brown hair blue eyes and
00:07:50
stands 6 feet tall at the time of his
00:07:53
disappearance John weighed 150 lb
00:07:57
there's a hole in my heart and I'm
00:07:59
hoping that all of this publicity will
00:08:01
find someone that can um feel that void
00:08:05
and a mother never gives
00:08:09
up if you have any information that can
00:08:11

next two young lovers are murdered while
00:08:24
on vacation the killer then PPS the
00:08:27
family with vicious
00:08:38
our next story is about a young couple
00:08:40
who had been dating for 6 months Jay
00:08:42
cook and his high school sweetheart T
00:08:45
van kenborg took the ferry from Victoria
00:08:48
Canada to Washington State to go camping
00:08:52
Jay was 20 years old Tanya was 17 and
00:08:56
they were in
00:08:58
love the couple's Journey began in
00:09:00
Victoria where they took a late
00:09:02
afternoon car furry headed to Port
00:09:05
Angeles Washington it was their first
00:09:07
trip together and they planned on a
00:09:10
romantic
00:09:12
getaway Jay and T had been going out for
00:09:15
about 6 months I think I think she was
00:09:18
quite special to them they certainly
00:09:21
seemed to be good for each other from
00:09:22
everything that I could gather uh I
00:09:24
certainly had no apprehension about
00:09:26
Tanya being with Jay I I felt very
00:09:28
comfortable with
00:09:30
that it's
00:09:35
windy but sometime during their Journey
00:09:38
Jay and Tanya's peaceful vacation turned
00:09:43
into a violent
00:09:46
nightmare Jay was driving his father's
00:09:49
van Witnesses reported seeing a drive
00:09:52
off the ferry and heading south on
00:09:54
Highway 101 authorities believe they
00:09:57
were headed towards a second car ferry
00:09:59
from Bremerton to
00:10:02
Seattle it was just an overnight trip
00:10:05
Jay and Tanya were expected home the
00:10:07
next
00:10:08
day if Tanya was late for anything she
00:10:11
would always phone so when Tanya did not
00:10:14
phone the next evening when they were
00:10:16
supposed to be returning my wife became
00:10:19
apprehensive the following day when she
00:10:21
didn't call we knew there was something
00:10:24
wrong Tanya's body was found partially
00:10:28
clothed she had been uh raped and
00:10:32
murdered we found some wire ties but you
00:10:35
would bundle wires together with laying
00:10:38
alongside the road we assume that they
00:10:41
were used to secure Tanya in the
00:10:45
van well we didn't know what to think
00:10:47
then because they hadn't found Jay and
00:10:50
for a while it looked like Jay might
00:10:53
even be a suspect they told us to be
00:10:56
prepared for
00:10:58
that
00:10:59
soon after Jay's van was found 90 Mi
00:11:02
away in the city of
00:11:05
Bellingham there's one of the ties was
00:11:07
just like with t down the scene there's
00:11:10
another one oh we got some blood over
00:11:12
here it looks like two blocks away
00:11:15
police found more plastic ties the keys
00:11:17
to Jay's van Tanya's driver's license
00:11:20
and a half empty box of ammunition they
00:11:23
also found a pair of surgical gloves
00:11:27
together these Clues comprised an
00:11:30
outright taunt he leaves Those Behind as
00:11:33
basically a sign to the police that you
00:11:35
needn't look for fingerprints because I
00:11:36
wore these gloves and uh he has
00:11:39
confidence that there's nothing that's
00:11:40
going to connect him with these
00:11:43
crimes a short time later Jay's body was
00:11:46
found he had been beaten and strangled
00:11:49
to
00:11:50
death his hands have been bound with
00:11:53
some plastic tie wraps and the things we
00:11:56
found on Jade certainly raised this as
00:11:58
suspicion that the person or people who
00:12:01
did this have been in the prison system
00:12:02
before without telling you anything else
00:12:05
uh that's definitely a
00:12:09
possibility police believe that it's
00:12:11
most likely that Jay and Tanya met their
00:12:13
killer on the 1020 PM ferry from
00:12:16
brierton to
00:12:20
Seattle we don't know the Killer's
00:12:22
intentions when he first met these two
00:12:25
we feel that he was out to do some harm
00:12:27
and certainly to assault both Jay and
00:12:30
Tanya and from what we have found I
00:12:32
think we can say that he had set his
00:12:34
sights on Tanya and Jay was in the way
00:12:37
few lights how you doing hi hey what's
00:12:40
up not much you guys going to Seattle
00:12:44
mhm yeah how about you friendly Young on
00:12:47
their first trip and I think easily
00:12:51
fooled an easy Mark say I wonder if you
00:12:54
could do me a favor it's pretty cold out
00:12:56
there and I only live a couple miles M
00:12:59
fery deck can you get me right I think
00:13:01
it's safe to say that by the time they
00:13:02
exited the ferry in downtown Seattle
00:13:05
they probably were in the company of the
00:13:06
man that killed
00:13:09
them it would seem to me that it's
00:13:11
logical that the person has committed
00:13:13
crimes like this in the past and been
00:13:15
successful at them and having been
00:13:17
successful I would certainly say that
00:13:19
it's likely that they'll continue to do
00:13:21
them good how's the holidays great
00:13:24
thanks good see you tomorrow yeah
00:13:26
bye-bye then over the Christmas holidays
00:13:28
Just 4 weeks after the murder of their
00:13:31
children Jay and Tanya's families each
00:13:34
received a series of disturbing greeting
00:13:37
cards they were filled with taunting
00:13:39
descriptions of the murders and the
00:13:42
author claimed to be the killer
00:13:44
postmarked from New York Los Angeles and
00:13:47
Seattle all of these cards had been
00:13:49
written by the same person so far at
00:13:52
least six of these greeting cards have
00:13:55
been mailed over three different
00:13:56
holidays and authorities still have no
00:13:59
idea who sent
00:14:01
them perhaps surprisingly DNA found on
00:14:05
the victim and DNA on the envelopes do
00:14:08
not
00:14:11
match the handwriting in these letters
00:14:14
and the cards is very
00:14:17
distinctive and there are some phrases
00:14:20
that are very distinctive also
00:14:23
Hallelujah bloody Jesus is a favorite
00:14:26
phrase of his he just continues to make
00:14:29
life miserable for these parents who
00:14:31
have lost their
00:14:33
children it's important that this
00:14:35
individual be
00:14:36
caught police are convinced the murderer
00:14:40
is an ex-convict familiar with the
00:14:42
Washington area they hope that he may
00:14:45
have talked about the crime and that
00:14:47
someone watching might be able to
00:14:49
identify him authorities are also
00:14:52
interested in finding out who wrote The
00:14:54

coming up the Fateful Flight of the
00:15:11
ghost blimp whose crew vanished without
00:15:14

troops along the Pacific coast The Hunt
00:15:26
is on for the [ __ ] submarine that brought
00:15:28
the to us soil in 1942 the final outcome
00:15:32
of World War II was still very much in
00:15:34
doubt the United States had every reason
00:15:37
to fear that the Japanese would launch
00:15:39
an allout attack on the west
00:15:43
coast they were known to be Japanese
00:15:45
submarines operating off the coast there
00:15:48
had been an attack on an oil refinery
00:15:51
down in near Santa
00:15:53
Monica there was a great fear that there
00:15:55
would be uh more
00:15:57
attacks
00:15:59
the Navy responded to the threat by
00:16:01
putting together a fleet of 12 blimps to
00:16:03
patrol the California coast the mission
00:16:06
of Airship Squadron 32 as they were
00:16:09
called was largely
00:16:12
[Music]
00:16:14
uneventful until August of
00:16:18
1942 that's when one of the blimps
00:16:20
crashed on a city street with no one on
00:16:24
board it was almost impossible for them
00:16:27
him not to have been seen by somebody
00:16:30
but nobody saw him go nobody saw him
00:16:33
jump and there's no relics of them at
00:16:37
all a real
00:16:40
puzzle it was perhaps one of the
00:16:42
strangest events that happen here in the
00:16:44
United States during World War II
00:16:47
incredibly Airship Squadron 32 only lost
00:16:51
two men during the entire War the two
00:16:54
men who disappeared that day decades
00:16:58
later
00:16:59
their exact fate remains a
00:17:04
mystery San
00:17:06
Francisco August 16th
00:17:09
1942 it was early on a Sunday morning
00:17:12
when Flight 101 prepared to take
00:17:16
off the pilots were 27-year-old
00:17:20
Lieutenant Ernest dwit Cody and
00:17:22
34-year-old insen Charles Ellis Adams
00:17:26
both were experienced and reliable
00:17:29
which made the events of the next 5
00:17:31
hours even more
00:17:33
mysterious Aviation machinist mate Riley
00:17:36
Hill was supposed to go with Adams and
00:17:38
Cody that
00:17:40
morning Adams had flown in the large
00:17:44
durables and was thoroughly checked out
00:17:46
but he had never flown in the small
00:17:49
blimps and this was an indoctrination
00:17:51
flight for him that Sunday morning just
00:17:53
before departure Riley Hill was ordered
00:17:56
off the blimp for some unknown
00:17:58
reason no need for you to go Riley Adams
00:18:02
and I will take it yes sir hill now
00:18:04
believes that the heavy moisture in the
00:18:06
air was weighing the blimp down making
00:18:08
it unsafe to take off with three men on
00:18:11
board I got out shut the door and locked
00:18:16
it and they took
00:18:20
off the Flight Plan called for the Blimp
00:18:23
to leave Treasure Island pass over the
00:18:25
Golden Gate Bridge then head to the
00:18:27
Falon Island
00:18:29
25 M off the coast from there Flight 101
00:18:33
would continue North to point Rays then
00:18:36
South along the
00:18:37
coastline the first leg of the patrol
00:18:40
went smoothly but then an hour and a
00:18:43
half after takeoff Lieutenant Cody
00:18:45
radioed Squadron headquarters and said
00:18:48
investigating suspicious oil
00:18:52
standby go
00:18:54
101 those were the last words ever
00:18:56
received from flight
00:19:00
101 when it came time for further
00:19:04
explanation and we didn't get it we just
00:19:07
assumed well it was negative and they
00:19:10
went on their way but when 3 hours
00:19:12
passed and still no one had heard from
00:19:14
the crew flight commanders became
00:19:17
alarmed frantic attempts to contact the
00:19:19
blimp went unanswered no sir no
00:19:22
Communications from the crew since they
00:19:23
report at
00:19:25
7:42 I'm investigating suspicious oil s
00:19:28
yes sir finally a message was received
00:19:31
but it was not from Flight
00:19:34
101 San Francisco sh Patrol one blimp
00:19:37
cross Beach to play crashed into the
00:19:39
golf course and dropped the dev charge
00:19:42
peeled it off let's get a team over
00:19:44
there right away the blimp had somehow
00:19:47
drifted 8 Miles off course and came
00:19:49
ashore just south of San
00:19:52
Francisco there was a swimmer there a
00:19:55
man called Mr capala who was standing
00:19:58
ready to go into the water and all of a
00:20:01
sudden he saw this huge gray Mass just
00:20:03
coming right at him remember this thing
00:20:06
is 47 ft wide and it wasn't too high off
00:20:09
the water and he watched it come in it
00:20:12
dragged a wheel along the sand at the
00:20:14
water's edge then hit a little sand null
00:20:17
it bounced up into the air and then slid
00:20:19
up a little bit of a canyon and then hit
00:20:22
rather heavily on the side of the canyon
00:20:25
and this knocked off a depth charg
00:20:30
the collapsing blimp was seen by
00:20:31
hundreds of people bunny gpie was 16
00:20:35
years old at the
00:20:36
time I was on the way home from Sunday
00:20:39
school and I saw this big gray thing
00:20:43
coming in over what I thought was going
00:20:45
to be right over Templeton Avenue when I
00:20:48
saw this thing coming in through the sky
00:20:50
I was very surprised as were a lot of
00:20:52
other people because things like that
00:20:54
just didn't happen in Daily City Flight
00:20:57
101 quickly lost altitude and headed
00:21:00
straight for the homes in the hills of
00:21:02
Daily City one woman's house almost
00:21:05
became the point of
00:21:08
impact it was a Mrs Appleton she said
00:21:11
that all of a sudden this huge Behemoth
00:21:14
had settled and scraped across the the
00:21:17
top of her roof and she said it sounded
00:21:19
like chains
00:21:22
dragging but the entire house was
00:21:24
blacked out because of the the size of
00:21:27
this thing and she raced to the front
00:21:29
window Wonder wondering what in the
00:21:30
world was going on and she saw the rest
00:21:32
of it the gondola hit the crossarm break
00:21:35
off part of the uh uh mechanism there
00:21:39
and gradually settled down to the ground
00:21:42
I missed the actual Landing of the thing
00:21:45
but when I got there it was just like
00:21:46
great big gray monster with the gondola
00:21:49
jutting up towards the tops of the
00:21:50
houses it was
00:21:52
huge miraculously no one was injured
00:21:55
when the blimp landed in the middle of
00:21:57
the street Street almost immediately
00:22:00
Daily City officials were on the scene
00:22:02
when Navy personnel arrived they were
00:22:05
shocked to discover that there was no
00:22:07
sign of Lieutenant Cody or inen Adams
00:22:11
apparently the blimp had pilot itself
00:22:15
straight into
00:22:17
downtown the legend of the ghost blimp
00:22:20
was
00:22:22
born investigators were puzzled by what
00:22:25
they found the door was latched open a
00:22:28
highly unusual inlight position the
00:22:31
safety bar normally used to block the
00:22:33
doorway was no longer in place and a
00:22:37
microphone hooked to an outside
00:22:39
loudspeaker dangled from the
00:22:43
gondle the ignition switches were still
00:22:47
on the uh radio was still on and working
00:22:51
nobody had touched my uh fuel valves
00:22:55
they were set up just exactly the way
00:22:57
that I'd left them we still had another
00:23:01
6 hours of
00:23:03
fuel Lieutenant Cody's cap rested on the
00:23:06
insulin panel and two of three life
00:23:09
jackets on board were missing suggesting
00:23:11
the crew had put them on before takeoff
00:23:14
as regulations required a locked
00:23:17
briefcase containing top secret codes
00:23:19
was still in its place it was as if Cody
00:23:23
and Adams had opened the door and simply
00:23:26
stepped out Into Thin Air
00:23:30
the machine gun was still there the
00:23:33
expandable life raft was there uh and
00:23:36
one more life jacket there was nothing
00:23:40
missing the Navy investigation revealed
00:23:42
that Flight 101 was seen by several
00:23:45
ships and planes between 7 and 11: a.m.
00:23:49
some of the eyewitnesses said they were
00:23:52
close enough to see Cody and Adams in
00:23:54
the gondola and everything seemed normal
00:23:59
theories emerged almost immediately
00:24:02
about what happened to the two men some
00:24:05
believe that Cody and Adams spotted an
00:24:07
enemy submarine when they descended to
00:24:10
investigate they were taken
00:24:13
prisoner according to one rumor the
00:24:16
pilots were involved in a lovers
00:24:18
triangle with an unknown woman
00:24:21
supposedly one killed the other during
00:24:23
the flight and then fled when the blimp
00:24:26
crashed Naval investigators came up with
00:24:29
their own Theory they believe that one
00:24:32
of the officers climbed out of the
00:24:34
gondola to fix a mechanical problem and
00:24:37
had some kind of trouble the second
00:24:40
pilot came to his Aid and then both men
00:24:43
fell
00:24:44
[Music]
00:24:45
overboard a year later Lieutenant Ernest
00:24:48
Cody and inston Charles Adams were
00:24:51
officially declared
00:24:53
dead the blimp itself was repaired after
00:24:57
the war it became this Goodyear blimp
00:25:00
seen by millions at sporting events
00:25:02
across the country few were aware that
00:25:05
the Airship circling overhead was the
00:25:08
infamous ghost
00:25:12
blimp coming up there's someone in town
00:25:15
who looks just like Jim boom Garden
00:25:18
could he have a
00:25:26
twin
00:25:31
imagine that there's someone who looks
00:25:33
walks and talks just like you well
00:25:36
that's been a bizarre fact of life for
00:25:38
Jim bomgarden Jim has been haunted for
00:25:41
years by a mysterious double a man who
00:25:44
seems to be everywhere or at least
00:25:46
everywhere Jim is
00:25:49
not baby the place is Rockford Illinois
00:25:53
and the event is a regular Saturday
00:25:54
morning company softball game
00:25:58
third baseman Rick holder is coming up
00:26:00
to bat when suddenly his brother-in-law
00:26:03
Jim boomgarden who should be 20 miles
00:26:06
away at home enters the game to pitch
00:26:08
for the other
00:26:11
team hey
00:26:12
Jim Jim I would say hi Jim hello Jim and
00:26:17
I wasn't getting no response from the
00:26:19
guy so I just thought you know after the
00:26:20
game was over I'd go up and I'd talk to
00:26:22
the guy hey
00:26:26
Jim how Cindy and the kids he said the
00:26:29
guy just kind of looked at him weird
00:26:31
give him a funny look and turned around
00:26:32
walked away from
00:26:35
[Music]
00:26:39
him 5 years later and just a few miles
00:26:42
away Jim's father Ernie was leaving the
00:26:45
doctor's office when he saw his son
00:26:49
Jim my dad came after this guy and was
00:26:53
yelling at him
00:26:56
Jim
00:26:58
this guy ignored him got into a car
00:27:01
which he said was very similar to mine
00:27:03
drove off and didn't even acknowledge
00:27:05
Him now we had two people who knew me
00:27:09
very well and they were both fooled
00:27:12
especially my dad who reared me this guy
00:27:16
fooled my
00:27:18
dad he has to look almost identical to
00:27:23
me Jim had been adopted when he was an
00:27:26
infant by a loving family in Illinois
00:27:29
his childhood was happy and uneventful
00:27:32
except for one strange
00:27:35
incident when Jim was 11 and visiting
00:27:38
his adoptive grandparents he was
00:27:41
approached by a group of neighborhood
00:27:43
boys
00:27:45
Billy you talking to me yeah do you want
00:27:48
to play basketball with us my name isn't
00:27:50
Billy what are you talking about it's
00:27:52
not Billy my name is Jimmy it's Billy
00:27:56
look if you don't call me by my right
00:27:58
name I won't play basketball with
00:28:01
you I couldn't understand if why they
00:28:03
want me to play basketball so much and
00:28:06
they wouldn't call me my by my name and
00:28:08
why they were making this name up I
00:28:09
could not understand that Jim didn't
00:28:12
think much of it after high school he
00:28:15
joined the army returned home got
00:28:17
married and had two
00:28:19
children Jim says that many times people
00:28:22
that he didn't know seem to know him
00:28:25
how's it going man I've Haven seen a
00:28:27
long time what's going on not
00:28:29
much I'll see you around okay and I've
00:28:33
met a lot of people and there's no way
00:28:35
that you can remember every face you see
00:28:38
so I kind of brushed off as as nothing
00:28:41
until some people would see me in places
00:28:45
that I I never was or I wasn't at that
00:28:49
time finally the strangest of all the
00:28:52
encounters took place at a mini Mark
00:28:54
just five blocks from Jim's home Shirley
00:28:58
hurling was behind the cash register
00:29:01
pump number three I was working and this
00:29:05
gentleman came in I assumed it was Jim
00:29:08
no not today he looked like him he
00:29:10
walked the same talked the same same
00:29:13
mannerisms I assumed it was
00:29:16
Jim within minutes Jim and Cindy walk in
00:29:20
do you forget something no why well you
00:29:22
were just here a few minutes ago oh
00:29:24
first time I've been here today and I
00:29:26
looked over at said I said he's kidding
00:29:28
right and she said no this is first time
00:29:31
he'd been out today and I said well then
00:29:34
my god there was somebody that came and
00:29:35
look just like
00:29:37
you if i' had been just 15 minutes
00:29:40
earlier just maybe we could have ran
00:29:43
into each other as he was coming out and
00:29:45
I was going in and met face to
00:29:48
face the lady who was there said she saw
00:29:51
a man who looked exactly like Jim and
00:29:54
they're not 15 minutes ago she said it
00:29:56
could have been Jim twin 3 weeks later
00:29:59
Jim's wife Cindy was visiting his
00:30:01
adoptive grandmother Sophie she became
00:30:04
noticeably silent when Cindy told her
00:30:07
about the odd case of mistaken identity
00:30:10
at the mini Mark what's wrong Sophie
00:30:12
then revealed a family secret about
00:30:14
Jim's
00:30:15
adoption Jim's father Ernie who had
00:30:18
since passed away told her that
00:30:21
Jim had a twin brother Jim had a twin
00:30:25
she said that Ernie didn't like keeping
00:30:28
it a secret but yet he figured that you
00:30:30
know if Jim had never known his brother
00:30:33
he would never miss him I
00:30:36
was
00:30:38
excited you know all the
00:30:40
speculations are now true I am looking
00:30:45
for a twin
00:30:46
brother Jim obtained a family history
00:30:49
from the adoption agency and learned
00:30:51
that his birth mother had a nephew who
00:30:53
drowned at the age of 14 desperate for
00:30:57
the details Jim spent hours in the
00:30:59
library until he found the newspaper
00:31:01
story about the tragedy finally Jim had
00:31:05
a family name
00:31:09
heronimus Jim found a woman with that
00:31:11
last name living just 20 miles
00:31:15
away may I help you is your last name
00:31:17
aonomus oh yes I think we might be
00:31:21
related you don't have to tell me we're
00:31:23
related you look exactly like my brother
00:31:26
bud she was his aunt Myrtle his birth
00:31:30
mother's sister the mother of the boy
00:31:32
who had
00:31:33
drowned for the first time Jim saw a
00:31:36
picture of his mother Hazel and learned
00:31:39
that she had died just 3 years
00:31:42
earlier Myrtle told Jim that his mother
00:31:45
had cut herself off from the family and
00:31:47
that they had never known anything about
00:31:50
the birth of the
00:31:53
twins Hazel never told you about me and
00:31:56
my brother no she never said anything
00:32:00
about having had twin boys of course I I
00:32:03
knew about the little girl she had
00:32:05
little girl another bombshell not only
00:32:08
did Jim have a twin brother but he also
00:32:11
had an older sister now the mystery is
00:32:14
even harder now I got two to find
00:32:16
instead of one but I'm bound determin
00:32:18
I'm want to find him one way or the
00:32:26
other
00:32:28
update after we aired this story Jim
00:32:31
tried to access his adoption
00:32:33
files a sympathetic judge agreed to
00:32:37
contact his sister's adoptive family and
00:32:40
tell them of Jim's search 47-year-old
00:32:43
Judy Sullivan learned for the first time
00:32:46
that she had a
00:32:48
brother Judy and Jim met the very next
00:32:51
day however Jim died a little more than
00:32:55
a year after their reunion
00:32:57
he had never met his twin
00:33:00
brother Jim's son James and Jim's sister
00:33:03
Judy would still like to find Jim's twin
00:33:06
or any other family
00:33:09
relatives Jim's twin brother whose first
00:33:11
name might be Billy was born in the
00:33:14
Salvation Army hospital Cook County
00:33:16
Illinois on March 29th
00:33:20
[Music]
00:33:21
1947 his brother was adopted by a family
00:33:24
in Rochelle

coming up police in New Orleans hunt for
00:33:42
a brutal serial killer their best lead
00:33:45
is the woman that he left for
00:33:55
dead LA centa
00:33:59
California we recently told you about
00:34:02
Diane hanline since her mid-40s Diane
00:34:06
has battled a rare and often fatal blood
00:34:08
disease Diane needed a bone marrow
00:34:11
transplant and only one person was a
00:34:14
potential
00:34:15
donor her younger sister Marilyn but
00:34:19
Diane had no idea where to find her bye
00:34:25
by years before when their parents
00:34:28
separated Marilyn went to live with
00:34:30
their father Diane stayed with their
00:34:33
mother over the next few years they saw
00:34:36
each other just a few times and then for
00:34:39
reasons long since forgotten the sisters
00:34:42
became
00:34:43
estranged I feel I'm asking a lot of my
00:34:46
sister to do this bone marrow for me but
00:34:49
even if she doesn't agree to a
00:34:51
transplant if she doesn't says I don't
00:34:53
want to do this I would still like to
00:34:55
make peace with her
00:35:00
update when we aired Diane Story a
00:35:03
private investigator named Robin Lee was
00:35:06
watching Robin was touched by Diane's
00:35:09
search and volunteered to help find
00:35:12
Marilyn I contacted the show got a
00:35:15
little more information started out with
00:35:18
the sister's name Marilyn Jones was her
00:35:20
ma name started with that and a date of
00:35:22
birth and went on from there and it took
00:35:26
me about days to find her Marilyn and
00:35:29
Diane finally met face to face for the
00:35:31
first time in 30
00:35:36
years it's so good to see
00:35:39
you once we hugged it was like it hadn't
00:35:43
been 30 years it had been just short
00:35:47
time I guess maybe that's why I feel
00:35:49
comfortable is because I can feel the
00:35:52
love and when you feel that love you
00:35:54
feel comfortable over you haven't
00:35:55
changed a bit know
00:35:58
you I think I'm still in shock you know
00:36:00
it's still like I don't you know I'm not
00:36:02
here yet it's just it's just a dream you
00:36:05
know but it's it's a great dream and we
00:36:07
have a lot of catching up to do and
00:36:09
we're going to have a lot of fun
00:36:10
together enjoy the time we have isn't
00:36:13
that
00:36:15
beautiful the day of the reunion just
00:36:18
happened to be Diane's birthday and
00:36:20
Marilyn had not
00:36:22
forgotten this is the best gift I've
00:36:24
ever had in my whole life is to have my
00:36:26
sister and to have my family for my
00:36:31
birthday it'll be the best birthday I've
00:36:33
ever had in my whole
00:36:36
life Marilyn hoped that she could be a
00:36:39
bone marrow donor for her sister but as
00:36:42
it turned out she was not a match sadly
00:36:45
a little more than a year after their
00:36:48
reunion Diane passed
00:36:54
away New Orleans
00:36:57
Louisiana one summer day across the
00:37:00
Mississippi River from the French quar a
00:37:02
lone recycler was collecting trash along
00:37:05
a deserted Road often used illegally as
00:37:07
a dump he was about to set off one of
00:37:10
the city's most complex murder
00:37:17
investigations the body was identified
00:37:20
as 17-year-old Danielle Brittain who
00:37:23
lived nearby with her mother she had
00:37:25
been strangled
00:37:27
and possibly
00:37:29
raped just 10 minutes into the
00:37:32
investigation detective Elizabeth wion's
00:37:35
instincts told her that she was dealing
00:37:37
with a serial killer I don't know if it
00:37:39
means anything or not a man approached
00:37:41
me regarding an attack of a woman which
00:37:43
had occurred approximately 2 weeks
00:37:48
earlier at this time I realized that
00:37:50
there was a possibility that this attack
00:37:52
and the murder of Danielle Britain could
00:37:54
be connected somehow with one strike
00:37:56
making difference that this victim has
00:37:59
survived her
00:38:02
attack assumed that I was dead in order
00:38:05
to leave me there the surviving victim
00:38:07
will'll call Brenda had her voice
00:38:09
permanently damaged in the strangulation
00:38:13
attempt police believe that she was
00:38:15
attacked by the same man who killed
00:38:17
Danielle Brittain Bren I need for you to
00:38:20
tell me as in as detail as possible what
00:38:22
happened that night Brenda was able to
00:38:25
clearly recall the attack in specific
00:38:28
detail started following me in his
00:38:31
car I was at my house and I decided that
00:38:34
I wanted to go and visit a friend of
00:38:37
mine say you need a ride no I'm okay I'm
00:38:39
just going so the man in the car got
00:38:42
side by side with me as I was walking
00:38:44
and ask me where I was going okay and I
00:38:47
kept on walking and he kept on insisting
00:38:49
that he could get me a ride to wherever
00:38:51
I was going and the car stopped and
00:38:54
before I knew it the man grabbed me and
00:38:55
put me into the the
00:39:00
car despite Brenda's protest the man
00:39:03
drove about a half a mile past her
00:39:05
friend's house to the same deserted Road
00:39:08
where Danielle's body would be found 2
00:39:10
weeks
00:39:12
later what are you
00:39:14
doing he on top me and began to choke
00:39:18
me he looked at me and I looked at him
00:39:21
and I realized this man was trying to
00:39:22
kill me I tried to fight him off but I I
00:39:26
couldn't I didn't have any
00:39:31
strength the killer strangled Brenda
00:39:33
with his bare hands stripped off her
00:39:35
clothes and dumped her body by the side
00:39:37
of the
00:39:40
road 6 hours later Brenda woke up and
00:39:44
found herself covered with garbage
00:39:47
finding Brenda had certainly been a
00:39:49
lucky break in this case we had now a
00:39:51
live victim who could identify an
00:39:53
attacker who could be responsible for
00:39:55
the murder of Daniel Britain I knew this
00:39:58
guy was out there stalking his victims I
00:40:00
had no idea it was going to get
00:40:03
worse about a month later the killer
00:40:06
attacked his third victim Charlene price
00:40:09
her body was dumped within one mile of
00:40:12
where Danielle was
00:40:14
found after another 3 months a fourth
00:40:17
victim was found in the same
00:40:20
area this is a sketch of that woman who
00:40:23
is still unidentified she was 5' 2 in
00:40:27
tall weighed 125 lb and had protruding
00:40:31
front
00:40:33
teeth only 2 and 1/2 Weeks passed before
00:40:36
the killer struck again the nude body of
00:40:40
29-year-old Lydia Madison was found in a
00:40:43
different dumb site this one only eight
00:40:46
blocks from Police
00:40:48
Headquarters detective soon learned that
00:40:51
three other bodies had been found in a
00:40:53
nearby Town bringing the total number of
00:40:55
victims
00:40:59
to8 these bodies closely resembled
00:41:03
bodies found in our investigation in
00:41:05
previous months leading me to believe
00:41:08
that the same killer may be responsible
00:41:11
for all these victims the killer always
00:41:14
strangled his victims and always left
00:41:16
them nude face down in or near illegal
00:41:19
dump sites seven of the eight women were
00:41:22
found within a 3M
00:41:25
radius I'm still afraid because I still
00:41:28
don't know where this man is and I know
00:41:31
he knows me just like as well as I know
00:41:33
him with me it's more now like
00:41:37
I'm living in fear every minute or every
00:41:40
second of the day on the night that she
00:41:42
was murdered Danielle Britain was seen
00:41:44
with a man resembling Brenda's attacker
00:41:47
outside a local bar police are convinced
00:41:51
that he is the
00:41:53
killer the man was driving a blue late
00:41:55
model Buick Regal or Monte
