Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 5, Episode 16

March 09, 2017 / 42:54

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the mysterious drowning of Debbie Wolf, the search for Vietnam vet Jim Bowski's Army nurse, and the murders of two teenage girls linked to Joe Shepard.

Debbie Wolf went missing after her shift at a hospital in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Her body was found in a pond, but the circumstances surrounding her death raised suspicions of foul play. Eyewitness accounts and a cryptic phone call suggested she may have been murdered, despite authorities ruling it an accidental drowning.

Jim Bowski, a Vietnam veteran, sought to find Captain Linda Sharp, the Army nurse who helped him recover from severe injuries and PTSD. Their emotional reunion highlighted the impact she had on his life, as he credited her with giving him the will to live after his traumatic experiences in the war.

The episode also features the chilling story of Joe Shepard, who was linked to the disappearances and murders of two teenage girls, Roxan Woodson and Kathy Clowers. After being apprehended, Shepard led authorities to the locations of their bodies, revealing a pattern of violence and evasion.

Each case illustrates the complexities of unresolved mysteries and the ongoing search for justice, with viewer involvement playing a crucial role in solving some of these cases.

TL;DR

Debbie Wolf's suspicious drowning, Jim Bowski's search for his Army nurse, and Joe Shepard's murders of two teenage girls are featured in this episode.

he
00:01:34
fville North
00:01:37
Carolina the day after
00:01:39
Christmas after completing her shift at
00:01:42
the hospital Debbie Wolf left work
00:01:44
presumably heading
00:01:47
home the next morning Debbie should have
00:01:50
been at work uh she had to be at work at
00:01:52
8 Debbie did not go to work Debbie did
00:01:54
not answer her telephone uh it wasn't
00:01:57
like Debbie at all she never missed work
00:01:59
she would call in if she was even going
00:02:01
to be a few minutes
00:02:04
late Debbie's parents and a family
00:02:06
friend named Kevin Gorton hurried over
00:02:09
to her house an isolated cabin 4 miles
00:02:12
outside of fville wonder why Deb's car
00:02:15
is not Debbie's car was not parked where
00:02:17
she always parked it but look at the
00:02:20
seat that seat's pushed way back we
00:02:23
looked around and we saw beer cans
00:02:25
laying in the yard she never drank that
00:02:27
kind anyway dogs were running loose but
00:02:30
they had not been
00:02:32
fed it's been a while since
00:02:35
Debbie there were small things that were
00:02:37
out of place that Debbie would not have
00:02:39
put where they were
00:02:41
placed there was a uniform laying on the
00:02:43
floor in the kitchen uh things thrown in
00:02:47
in the kitchen on the floor like maybe
00:02:48
she took them off Debbie's purse was not
00:02:51
in its usual place Kevin found it shoved
00:02:54
under the
00:02:56
bed first it is hey Dad miss you here at
00:02:59
work
00:03:00
there was also an odd message on
00:03:02
Debbie's answering machine recorded
00:03:04
earlier that
00:03:06
day you been out a lot of days you make
00:03:09
me worry when you miss another
00:03:11
one just want to what concerned me about
00:03:13
his message was that he said that she
00:03:16
had missed a lot of days at work and she
00:03:19
hadn't in fact she had only missed a few
00:03:21
hours at work at the time that he put
00:03:23
the message on the answering
00:03:27
machine the search continued out inside
00:03:30
the cabin and around a nearby Pond but
00:03:32
there was no sign of Debbie
00:03:35
Wolf Debbie's mother called the
00:03:37
Sheriff's Office and was told they would
00:03:39
investigate only after Debbie had been
00:03:41
missing for 3
00:03:44
days but 5 days would pass before
00:03:46
authorities began a fullscale
00:03:49
search they searched the cabin later
00:03:52
that afternoon they brought the blood
00:03:54
hounds out which they could find nothing
00:03:56
at all they then walked around the edge
00:03:59
of the pond I was there for that Friends
00:04:03
of the family had been there a couple of
00:04:04
days prior had done some searching on
00:04:06
their own they had already looked in the
00:04:09
pond there was no use for us to look in
00:04:10
the pond so I don't think we did a dive
00:04:13
of the pond or a complete search of the
00:04:15
pond on that day no we did not at that
00:04:17
time I asked him if it would be all
00:04:20
right then if I got my own divers to go
00:04:23
into the pond and he said
00:04:28
certainly Kevin Gordon and another
00:04:31
friend Gordon chis returned to the pond
00:04:34
both men were familiar with rescue
00:04:38
work childrenis dragged the pond looking
00:04:40
for evidence Kevin I found what looks
00:04:42
like a set of tracks he was in the water
00:04:45
approximately 2 minutes when he called
00:04:47
out to me and told me that he had found
00:04:49
what looked like a set of footprints and
00:04:50
a drag
00:04:52
Mark in fact Gordon childr says that he
00:04:55
found two sets of footprints pressed
00:04:57
into the thick mud along with drag
00:05:03
marks I went out and went under and
00:05:06
following the trail I was maybe 6 in
00:05:08
from the
00:05:10
bottom I hit something my mask

00:05:24
flooded looks like a body down here are
00:05:27
you sure let me double check
00:05:31
so I went back down confirmed the hole
00:05:34
spent more time looking didn't touch or
00:05:37
disturb anything I couldn't see above
00:05:39
mid drift cuz it was inside of a looked
00:05:42
like a burn
00:05:44
barrel there's a rusty 55g oil drum type
00:05:48
thing with holes in police were called
00:05:51
to the scene the dead woman was
00:05:53
identified as Debbie
00:05:58
Wolf the corner concluded that Debbie
00:06:00
Wolf had drowned an autopsy revealed no
00:06:03
trace of drugs no alcohol in her system
00:06:07
no obvious signs of Foul Play but
00:06:10
evidence at the scene and a mysterious
00:06:12
phone call LED Debbie's family and
00:06:14
friends to believe that she was
00:06:25
murdered Kevin want you to come over
00:06:27
here and identify the body hey typical
00:06:30
cold water drowning will be eyes open
00:06:32
mouth open hands and arms in a very
00:06:35
clawed State you know just a fight for
00:06:37
life which was quite on contrary to the
00:06:40
way that the Debbie was the eyes were
00:06:43
closed the mouth was closed arms were in
00:06:45
a relaxed State just her whole body was
00:06:47
relaxed she looked like she was
00:06:51
asleep we theorized that um if it was an
00:06:55
accidental drowning she may have been
00:06:58
out around the pond possibly she was
00:07:00
playing with the dogs and fell
00:07:02
in as the investigation continued police
00:07:06
began to deny that Debbie's body had
00:07:08
been found inside of a
00:07:11
barrel I asked do they have the barrel
00:07:14
and they said no they decided to leave
00:07:16
it there they'll get it in the morning
00:07:19
the next day they went back to get the
00:07:21
barrel it seems that the barrel was gone
00:07:24
all of a sudden it didn't exist the same
00:07:27
Barrel that had been there the night
00:07:28
before
00:07:31
in my opinion and opinions of some of
00:07:33
the investigators um what appeared to be
00:07:36
a barrel to some of the
00:07:39
divers could have been the field jacket
00:07:42
which may have ballooned out as she was
00:07:45
laying at that angle at the bottom of
00:07:46
the
00:07:48
pond there was no doubt my mind 100%
00:07:52
positive that it was an old burn barrel
00:07:54
or something of that nature you know
00:07:56
metal rusted 55 gallon type drum
00:08:00
now that the body was
00:08:03
in there was an oil barrel it was
00:08:05
sitting by de's
00:08:07
cabin we used it for target practice
00:08:11
after I had called law enforcement that
00:08:13
we had located a body I went over to the
00:08:16
spot where the barrel
00:08:18
was the barrel was no longer
00:08:22
there a few months later Jenny
00:08:25
discovered another
00:08:27
inconsistency when I got a chance to
00:08:29
examine the clothes that were on
00:08:31
Debbie's body I realized that those were
00:08:34
not Debbie's clothes the bra was uh cup
00:08:37
size three sizes too large for her the
00:08:40
pants were very very much too long the
00:08:43
shoes Debbie were a lady's size seven
00:08:47
and these were a men's size
00:08:50
six the tennis shoes she had on were her
00:08:53
tennis shoes we have photographs of her
00:08:55
with those tennis shoes on prior to her
00:08:57
death that's as much as I want to
00:08:59
comment on
00:09:01
col Debbie's family remained convinced
00:09:04
that she had been
00:09:08
murdered among Debbie's responsibilities
00:09:10
at work was coordinating the hospital's
00:09:14
volunteers come on I want to go out with
00:09:16
you I don't want to go out with you I
00:09:17
told you one volunteer in particular
00:09:20
seemed to bother her quite a bit because
00:09:22
he had a history of psychiatric
00:09:23
illnesses you wait here wait here wait a
00:09:27
minute according to Debbie's mother one
00:09:30
volunteer had obtained Debbie's Home
00:09:32
phone number hello he was investigated
00:09:36
by the sheriff's department uh the night
00:09:39
that the body was brought to the surface
00:09:42
however he provided an alibi and refused
00:09:45
to take a
00:09:46
polygraph so he wasn't questioned any
00:09:49
longer he left several days after that
00:09:51
to go out of
00:09:53
[Music]
00:09:56
state he did there was another volunteer
00:09:59
at the hospital at the same time that
00:10:01
wanted to become romantically involved
00:10:03
with Debbie Debbie discussed this with
00:10:05
everyone including him and told him that
00:10:07
she would be his friend but nothing else
00:10:09
she was interested in someone else
00:10:10
totally away from the hospital you know
00:10:13
I've got a
00:10:14
boyfriend Jenny is convinced that this
00:10:17
was the man who called Debbie the day
00:10:19
after she disappeared expressing concern
00:10:22
that she had been missing from work for
00:10:24
days Days make me worry when you miss
00:10:27
another one there was nothing there that
00:10:29
we could uh uh use in any criminal
00:10:34
prosecution or there was nothing there
00:10:37
that to indicate to us that this was a
00:10:42
homicide what really happened to Debbie
00:10:44
Wolf her mother believes that she was
00:10:47
taken
00:10:48
hostage and then
00:10:50
murdered she believes that later someone
00:10:53
returned to the pond to remove the
00:10:55
barrel so that the death would seem
00:10:58
accidentally
00:11:00
and there are people out there who know
00:11:02
what happened to
00:11:04
Debbie and I'm hoping that they will
00:11:06
come forward and finally say
00:11:10
something she was loved by very very
00:11:14
many people and I think that she has a
00:11:19
right to be put to rest finally and I'd
00:11:23
like to do
00:11:26
that if you have any information about
00:11:29

00:12:33
best to forget them but he did preserve
00:12:36
one memory a nurse named Linda sharp who
00:12:40
gave him the will to
00:12:42
live Captain sharp was the only good
00:12:45
memory I
00:12:46
had she had something about
00:12:50
her that made you feel comfortable
00:12:54
warm want to
00:12:57
live and go back home
00:13:00
when you were
00:13:04
dying just two days before he was to be
00:13:07
reunited with his new bride in Hawaii
00:13:10
Jim platoon was attacked by a group of
00:13:13
North
00:13:16
Vietnamese they blew us to
00:13:19
Smither we didn't even have a
00:13:22
chance there were 60 of us somewhere
00:13:25
between 250 and 300
00:13:29
and it wiped out my whole company at the
00:13:32
time I was operating the radio for
00:13:34
lieutenant because we were two people
00:13:36
side by
00:13:38
side he was
00:13:43
[Applause]
00:13:52
dead and then the next thing I knew I
00:13:56
went flying through the air I landed 30
00:13:59
ft down the
00:14:00
hill I picked up my leg that was blown
00:14:03
off and I crawled back up the
00:14:08
hill coming through we got a patience
00:14:10
coming through I don't know he he's
00:14:13
coming in and out I don't
00:14:15
know looks bad my first conscious memory
00:14:19
was looking up and
00:14:22
seeing this blonde lady in
00:14:26
fatigues helping me you'll be fine
00:14:28
Soldier
00:14:30
you'll be fine Captain Linda
00:14:34
sharp I just woke up and M my eyes and
00:14:37
she was looking over me we need a doctor
00:14:39
back over here I heard people talking
00:14:43
and he ain't going to make
00:14:45
it and all I saw was her looking down at
00:14:49
me Tak care
00:14:51
of she gave me the encouragement to live
00:14:59
because of extreme infection what was
00:15:02
left of Jim's leg was amputated at the
00:15:04
hip this was followed by frigid baths to
00:15:08
lower his body
00:15:10
temperature hi Jim how you
00:15:14
doing going for a little swim the lady
00:15:17
was phenomenal hey you know we need a
00:15:19
hurry up but every time I open my eyes
00:15:21
that lady's blue eyes would be looking
00:15:24
down at me looks like you're feeling
00:15:27
better hey I promise if you get your
00:15:29
down I can take you out and go get a
00:15:31
couple
00:15:33
beers sounds
00:15:35
good I promise that's what I'm going to
00:15:37
do if you weren't cold
00:15:40
before with her help Jim regained his
00:15:42
former spirit and his will to
00:15:46
live want to go dancing when we get back
00:15:49
home oh you know it I'm dancing night
00:15:53
away what are you doing you'll see be
00:15:56
quiet late one night just two days
00:15:59
before Jim was scheduled to leave
00:16:01
Captain sharp kept her
00:16:03
word do I keep my promises
00:16:06
wow stars were out beautiful night my
00:16:11
own and she brought two cans of beer
00:16:14
popped them both sat on the edge of the
00:16:17
bed and
00:16:19
smiled so you going to write your wife
00:16:21
about your leg I don't know
00:16:25
how you started with one word at a time
00:16:30
I just don't know what to say to her you
00:16:34
were not allowed to leave the mash unit
00:16:38
until you wrote a letter to your wife I
00:16:41
didn't have the courage to write it she
00:16:46
forced me to do
00:16:47
it and then I didn't know she had sent a
00:16:52
letter and a picture to my wife with it
00:16:56
telling my wife what to expect Dear Mrs
00:17:00
Bowski it truly is not possible for me a
00:17:03
poor letter writer to tell you how very
00:17:06
much Jim loves you there will be days
00:17:09
when Jim will be discouraged but don't
00:17:11
you or any of your families ever feel
00:17:13
sorry for him he needs understanding
00:17:16
love and help not pity a missing limb
00:17:19
doesn't make Jim less of a person and it
00:17:22
certainly doesn't lessen his love for
00:17:23
you take care Jim God bless you both
00:17:27
sincerely Captain Linda
00:17:31
[Music]
00:17:36
sharp I just think about
00:17:39
her I've thought about her since the day
00:17:42
I left Vietnam I don't think that I
00:17:45
would have came back to my wife without
00:17:47
Captain
00:17:49
[Music]
00:17:51
sharp she just gave me all the
00:17:56
encouragement and the strength
00:17:59
and the motivation to
00:18:02
Live Jim was awarded two purple hearts
00:18:04
for wounds sustained in combat and a
00:18:07
silver star for his bravery Under
00:18:10
Fire but Jim's War raged on
00:18:14
silently he didn't want people to know
00:18:17
he was a Vietnam
00:18:18
veteran he would just assume people
00:18:20
thought his leg was lost in a car
00:18:22
accident or something for 20 years Jim
00:18:25
suffered from post-traumatic stress
00:18:27
disorder but the memory of Captain Linda
00:18:30
Sharp's kindness helped him to
00:18:33
heal he's ready to look for her now
00:18:36
because now he's well enough mentally to
00:18:39
look for and I think if he could meet
00:18:41
her it might help him to
00:18:43
heal I would very much like to get in
00:18:46
touch with Captain Linda sharp if it's
00:18:48
at all possible and thank
00:18:52
her for what she did for me
00:19:00
and all the other
00:19:06
guys
00:19:08
update Linda sharp saw Jim's story on
00:19:11
Unsolved Mysteries and she immediately
00:19:14
called us two weeks later she and Jim
00:19:17
were
00:19:22
reunited Hi how are you are you come
00:19:27
here
00:19:30
I believe it you look so good you really
00:19:34
do when I opened the door I was elated
00:19:38
all I wanted to do is give her a great
00:19:39
big hug and just hug her and thank her
00:19:43
and kiss her on the cheek and
00:19:45
just uh just try to show my appreciation
00:19:48
I feel very blessed to be here and to
00:19:51
actually see him and talk with him
00:19:54
because sometimes nurses don't we don't
00:19:56
realize that we have an impact on
00:19:57
patients lives and uh I certainly didn't
00:20:00
realize the impact I had on his life at
00:20:02
all Jim Bowski remained in contact with
00:20:06
Linda sharp Caldwell until his death 9
00:20:10
years after the
00:20:13
[Music]
00:20:18
reunion coming up police hunt for a
00:20:21
coldblooded killer of a frail elderly
00:20:23
man
00:20:35
in wasburn Texas Bill Henderson says
00:20:38
goodbye to his wife granddaughter and
00:20:41
great granddaughter take care of you
00:20:42
until Saturday when I see you again okay
00:20:45
I'll be fine I love you they were
00:20:47
heading off to visit relatives several
00:20:49
hundred miles
00:20:51
away over the next 3 days Bill stayed in
00:20:54
touch and then a day went by with no
00:20:57
word from Bill
00:21:01
every time I called it was just a busy
00:21:03
signal so I didn't really know if the
00:21:05
phones were just off the hook or what
00:21:09
happened we afraid that maybe it may
00:21:12
have had a heart attack or some health
00:21:15
problem and was sick in the house and
00:21:16
couldn't get to the telephone or maybe
00:21:19
had been trying to call for help and dro
00:21:21
the telephone or something like that
00:21:23
that's what we was afraid of Bill's son
00:21:25
Gary and two other family members were
00:21:28
worried about Bill they immediately
00:21:31
drove to his house his truck's not out
00:21:32
front I don't know where he
00:21:36
is Dad when we arrived at my dad's house
00:21:40
the phone in the kitchen was off the
00:21:42
hook my brother-in-law Frank went over
00:21:45
and hung that phone
00:21:48
up I was walking down the hall saw my
00:21:51
dad's glasses broken glasses laying in
00:21:54
the
00:21:56
floor there was a picture laying in the
00:21:58
floor
00:22:00
floor and that's when I saw my father
00:22:04
laying in the floor and the room all
00:22:07
tore
00:22:09
up
00:22:12
Frank he was cold he'd been there for a
00:22:15
while and Frank told me that he didn't
00:22:17
think my dad died of a heart attack that
00:22:20
it looked like he was
00:22:22
murdered Bill Henderson had been
00:22:25
strangled and beaten to death with an
00:22:27
electric iron 8 to 10 hours before he
00:22:30
was
00:22:31
found this was a extremely violent
00:22:34
murder the man was beaten time and time
00:22:39
again and it was extremely obvious to us
00:22:44
also that uh Mr Henderson had put up a
00:22:47
fight for his
00:22:49
life Bill's Truck and wallet were
00:22:52
missing and yet police weren't convinced
00:22:54
that robbery could be the motivation for
00:22:56
such a brutal crime
00:23:01
5 days after the murder a man walking
00:23:03
along an interstate highway some 50 mil
00:23:06
from wasburn came across Henderson's
00:23:09
wallet and then more evidence turned
00:23:13
up the next day Bill Henderson's pickup
00:23:16
truck was discovered just outside of
00:23:18
Chicago more than a th000 miles from
00:23:21
wasburn Texas police found no clues in
00:23:24
the pickup but they did learn about two
00:23:26
important eyewitnesses who not only met
00:23:29
the killer but actually spent the day
00:23:32
riding with him in Henderson's
00:23:36
truck on the day of the murder 265 Mi
00:23:40
east of wasburn three young men arrived
00:23:43
at a truck
00:23:44
stop to the attendant it was soon
00:23:48
obvious that something was wrong excuse
00:23:51
me you going to do something that guy
00:23:53
stole a pickup truck what that guy they
00:23:56
uh started telling him that the truck
00:23:58
they were brand that the man had sto
00:24:00
truck out there the brown one you got to
00:24:02
do something so
00:24:04
Zu
00:24:05
8861
00:24:10
Texas it's not reported
00:24:12
stolen okay
00:24:15
thanks sorry guys I said it's not stolen
00:24:19
it's got to be stolen I said no the
00:24:22
problem we had was that uh when they ran
00:24:27
the uh license plate number on the truck
00:24:30
we had yet to find Mr Henderson's body
00:24:34
15 minutes later the driver of the
00:24:36
pickup truck left the hitch hackers
00:24:39
refused to go with
00:24:40
them after the suspect drove off they
00:24:44
were still so insistent on trying to get
00:24:46
this man picked up so scared of him that
00:24:49
they went and dial 911 themselves trying
00:24:53
to get someone to stop the suspect in
00:24:55
the truck yeah I'd like to report a
00:24:57
stolen vehicle again sheriff's deputies
00:24:59
said that no such vehicle had been
00:25:01
reported
00:25:03
missing according to the attendant the
00:25:05
two hitchhikers then headed towards the
00:25:07
highway they never gave authorities
00:25:09
their names or their
00:25:14
addresses the suspect continued North he
00:25:17
abandoned the pickup truck 24 hours
00:25:19
later in Hazel Crest Illinois just south
00:25:23
of Chicago I think it's extremely
00:25:26
important that we catch this man anybody
00:25:30
that will attack an elderly man that is
00:25:33
nerly defenseless because of natural
00:25:36
disease and
00:25:38
illnesses will attack and kill
00:25:40
[Music]
00:25:44
anybody it hurts to know what Bill had
00:25:47
to go through the pain and suffering he
00:25:49
had to go through out there
00:25:51
before he took his last breath and
00:25:55
uh I would just like to see this person
00:25:59
caught and tried
00:26:02
convicted and
00:26:04
sentenced I don't feel like my Dad
00:26:07
should have had
00:26:08
to see something like that leaning over
00:26:12
him you know as the last thing he ever
00:26:18
saw just one
00:26:22
fire who murdered Bill Henderson Police
00:26:26
had only one clue that could provide an
00:26:29
answer there was a palm print in blood
00:26:34
inside the room it was on a uh art type
00:26:37
tablet if we can find the person that
00:26:41
matches up to that Bloody palm print
00:26:44
then we have our murder
00:26:48
suspect
00:26:49
update as a result of our broadcast the
00:26:53
two hitchhikers came
00:26:55
forward under hypnosis they recall
00:26:58
details about the suspect including his
00:27:01
hometown and his first
00:27:03
name that information LED police to
00:27:06
Lawrence Tut who by that time was
00:27:08
serving time in Ohio for an unrelated
00:27:12
crime DNA evidence linked Tut to the
00:27:15
murder of Bill Henderson and Tut pleaded
00:27:18
guilty he was sentenced to 45 years in a
00:27:22
Texas
00:27:26
prison next te AG girls who spent time
00:27:29
with Joe Shepard kept turning up dead
00:27:32
but before police could get a straight
00:27:34
answer from him Joe Shepard was on the
00:27:47
Run Telo planes
00:27:51
Tennessee in a park car 16-year-old
00:27:54
roxand Woodson fights off the advances
00:27:57
of a man named Joe Shephard two friends
00:28:00
watch from the back seat roxan escapes
00:28:04
and runs off into the darkness Shepherd
00:28:07
chases after her roxan Woodson doesn't
00:28:10
return that night or during the ensuing
00:28:13
days we just fell on our knees and said
00:28:16
oh God no oh God no not
00:28:21
her Roxanne's disappearance was
00:28:24
traumatic not only for her family but
00:28:26
also for investigators on on the case
00:28:29
they suspected that Joe Shepard the last
00:28:31
person seen with roxan might be able to
00:28:34
explain how she
00:28:38
vanished shortly after roxan was
00:28:41
reported missing police went to the
00:28:43
house where Joe Shephard lived with his
00:28:46
parents the officers waited while
00:28:48
Shephard went into his bedroom to put on
00:28:51
his
00:28:52
boots suddenly Shephard reached for a
00:28:55
shotgun
00:28:58
the officers wrestled the gun away from
00:29:00
Shephard and took him in for
00:29:03
questioning when was the last time you
00:29:05
saw roxan Woodson Joe's initial story
00:29:09
was that he had attempted to seduce
00:29:11
roxan and she had gotten mad at him at
00:29:15
his persistent efforts and had jumped
00:29:18
from the car and run into the woods that
00:29:19
he went running after her and finally
00:29:23
Joe came back telling the two boys that
00:29:26
he'd tried to get her back and that he
00:29:28
didn't know where she'd
00:29:29
gone Joe Shepard was booked for
00:29:32
assaulting a police officer but he made
00:29:34
bond and was
00:29:36
released for several days following Rox
00:29:39
San's disappearance over 60 people
00:29:41
searched the woods looking for her
00:29:43
Shephard voluntarily joined them the
00:29:46
police brought in dogs to follow roxan
00:29:49
scent into the woods they tracked her
00:29:51
only a few yards and then the trail
00:29:54
abruptly stopped Roan's family feared
00:29:58
the
00:29:59
worst there's no
00:30:01
relief because you haven't got her she's
00:30:03
gone you don't know what's happened to
00:30:05
her and she's out there and you can't
00:30:07
reach her and you can't help
00:30:10
her after a few frustrating days the
00:30:14
search was called
00:30:16
off but an unexpected Discovery would
00:30:19
soon bring authorities back to Joe
00:30:22
Shepard's
00:30:23
house Joe's mother was standing at the
00:30:25
window in the kitchen looking out and
00:30:27
she noticed the dogs were digging and
00:30:30
going on at one specific location
00:30:33
there and she walked up on what proved
00:30:37
to be two hands sticking out of the
00:30:41
ground she notified the authorities at
00:30:43
that time and uh they came to the
00:30:46
shepher home and did remove the body of
00:30:49
roxan Woodson from Joe Shephard's mother
00:30:51
and father's
00:30:53
yard roxan had been buried in a shallow
00:30:56
grave some of her clothes were missing
00:30:59
and her pants had been wrapped around
00:31:02
her
00:31:03
head at that point the monal county
00:31:06
sheriff's deputy took out a warrant
00:31:08
charging the suspect Joe shepherd with
00:31:12
first deegree murder look here Joe found
00:31:16
her barri in your front yard look at him
00:31:17
Joe we found her barri in your yard
00:31:19
during Shephard's second interrogation
00:31:22
his story began to change tell us the
00:31:24
truth what happened to her
00:31:27
[Music]
00:31:28
I come up on her and she'd hit her head
00:31:31
or something I tried to revive her I
00:31:32
thought maybe she was just knocked out
00:31:34
you know something could happen to her
00:31:35
have there animal or something so I
00:31:37
thought I'll bury her that's what I'll
00:31:38
do so I did I took her uh I took her
00:31:42
back the house
00:31:43
bu according to Joe Shepard not knowing
00:31:46
what to do with in his previous
00:31:47
encounters with the law he was afraid to
00:31:49
contact any law enforcements so then he
00:31:52
decided to bury
00:31:55
her he never did actually admit to being
00:31:59
responsible for her
00:32:01
death I find prob Shephard's explanation
00:32:05
was not convincing he was arraigned on a
00:32:07
charge of murder authorities believed
00:32:10
that they were on track to close the
00:32:12
Woodson
00:32:13
murder then they received an anonymous
00:32:16
phone call blinking shepher to yet
00:32:19
another
00:32:20
disappearance Kathy Clowers a local
00:32:23
14-year-old girl had vanished 2 years
00:32:26
earlier
00:32:28
I need you to take us and show us where
00:32:29
she is now can you do
00:32:35
that yeah I can take you
00:32:37
there Shephard LED investigators to the
00:32:40
body of Kathy Clowers just as he had
00:32:45
promised we went into the woods uh
00:32:48
probably a couple hundred yards off the
00:32:50
highway Joe had designate a spot where
00:32:53
we ought to
00:32:56
dig I'll never forget Joe Shephard was
00:32:59
hunkered down beside the hole we were
00:33:01
digging and he looked up with this cold
00:33:04
smile on his face and said see I told
00:33:06
you so he was proud I think of of the
00:33:10
fact that he had produced a body for us
00:33:12
and and showed no emotion at
00:33:15
all a pants leg had been wrapped around
00:33:18
her head very similar to the manner in
00:33:22
which the Woodson child had been buried
00:33:26
there had been pants leg wrapped around
00:33:27
on her head Joe Shepard was formerly
00:33:31
indicted for the murder of Kathy
00:33:34
Clowers while he awaited trial one of
00:33:37
the jailers was summoned to a cell near
00:33:39
Shepherds what's matter with you boy the
00:33:41
Jailer was lured into the cell by a
00:33:44
prisoner pretending to be sick what's
00:33:47
your problem I don't know I'm
00:33:50
sick after locking up the Jailer the two
00:33:53
men went to Shepherd's cell they
00:33:55
released him and the three fled the
00:33:57
prison go let go come
00:34:01
on the other two escapes were recaptured
00:34:04
the following week but Shephard remained

at

00:34:17
viewer tip a 10year search for Joe
00:34:20
Shepard has ended after the Unsolved
00:34:23
Mystery Show October the 5th we received
00:34:25
a phone call from a local resid
00:34:27
president saying that he believed the
00:34:30
guy called Shephard was in fact living
00:34:32
in London under the name Joseph trip we
00:34:35
began an
00:34:36
investigation and when we had identified
00:34:39
him to our satisfaction as shepher he
00:34:42
was
00:34:43
arrested Shephard was later extradited
00:34:46
and convicted of involuntary
00:34:47
manslaughter in the death of Kathy
00:34:49
Clowers and felony murder and the death
00:34:52
of roxan Woodson Joe Shepard was
00:34:55
sentenced to life in prison for the
00:35:02
murders next can a deceased love one
00:35:06
communicate from Beyond the
00:35:19
Grave Portsmith
00:35:22
Virginia it was 3 months after the birth
00:35:25
of Michelle om Al's son Benjamin
00:35:28
that evening Michelle had a haunting
00:35:30
dream about a conversation with her
00:35:33
deceased
00:35:34
[Music]
00:35:36
grandfather he appeared with a message
00:35:38
for his son Greg Michelle's
00:35:42
father
00:35:44
Michelle tell Greg to get a pil of water
00:35:46
and meet me at the railroad
00:35:49
track at first I thought it was just one
00:35:51
of those things where I must have had
00:35:53
him on my mind and you know thinking it
00:35:57
was just a a dream and I asked my dad I
00:35:59
said what did he mean by this and I was
00:36:01
just stunned I didn't say anything she
00:36:04
says does that make any
00:36:05
sense I says it makes perfect sense now
00:36:09
Greg one of the one things we got to
00:36:10
watch out for and I remembered back when
00:36:13
I was a child he had asked me on Labor
00:36:16
Day to go fishing with him let's take a
00:36:19
look at this and I remember taking the
00:36:21
pale and caught an eel yes we got
00:36:25
another one great fantastic and my job
00:36:27
was to carry it back in the pale and it
00:36:29
was kind of a scary scary thought I mean
00:36:31
this thing squirming around in this pale
00:36:33
walking back with
00:36:35
it Michelle had no way of knowing that I
00:36:39
became a Believer at that point one of
00:36:42
the most fascinating evidences of life
00:36:45
after death contained in direct contacts
00:36:49
is the fact that the loved ones who have
00:36:51
passed on will often through
00:36:54
particularly vivid dreams tell us little
00:36:57
bits of information tell us things that
00:36:59
we could not possibly know oh Michelle
00:37:02
I'm so happy you named him Benjamin over
00:37:05
time Michelle's dreams began to feel
00:37:07
more and more real Michelle actually
00:37:11
appeared in some dreams herself talking
00:37:13
with her
00:37:15
grandfather Michelle ask Greg if he
00:37:18
knows where your uncle's purple heart is
00:37:21
what Purple Heart Grandpa when I asked
00:37:24
my father about the Purple Heart my dad
00:37:27
was like
00:37:28
no Michelle you know none of my uncles
00:37:29
not that I know of had a purple heart
00:37:32
and one day I happened to be speaking to
00:37:34
my mother and I asked her about it and
00:37:36
she says oh yeah she says your uncle had
00:37:39
gotten a purple heart and she had
00:37:42
it come on the dreams began to take
00:37:44
Michelle to places she had never been
00:37:47
before places where her grandfather had
00:37:50
spent some of the happiest days of his
00:37:52
life
00:37:55
Grandpa Grandpa
00:37:58
we're late for the track would you would
00:38:00
you go through I'm sorry honey you have
00:38:02
to go back now go on home but tell Greg
00:38:05
I got his lucky pencil I thought now I'm
00:38:08
really losing it this did not make sense
00:38:10
whatsoever so I called Dad when I told
00:38:14
him about the lucky pencil dad just sat
00:38:16
there again on the phone and he was real
00:38:19
quiet and he told me that um when he was
00:38:22
a little boy they used to all go the
00:38:25
racetrack lucky pads get your lucky
00:38:28
pencils my mom had a box of pencils
00:38:31
little stubs and full length ones and I
00:38:34
took that down off the shelf and I stood
00:38:36
at the Gate of the racetrack and sold
00:38:38
lucky pencils lucky pencils get your
00:38:40
lucky pencils I can buy lucky pencil I
00:38:42
couldn't imagine how she was picking
00:38:44
these things up uh cuz we had never
00:38:46
talked about it and there would be no
00:38:48
way for her to know these
00:38:49
things Michelle had named her baby
00:38:52
Benjamin after her
00:38:53
grandfather I believe that's the reason
00:38:55
Grandpa came back to her it was a way of
00:38:57
of affirming that he's there it was a
00:38:59
way also of saying thank you hey that's
00:39:01
nice just the way if somebody here on
00:39:03
Earth named a child after you'd say well
00:39:05
thank you how flattering he's such a
00:39:07
good
00:39:08
baby he said he will always watch over
00:39:11
me and Benjamin so in a way I look at as
00:39:14
a guardian
00:39:17
angel more than 100 dreams later
00:39:21
michalow mie still looks forward to each
00:39:24
encounter with her
00:39:26
grandfather I just kind of look at it as
00:39:28
a blessing a
00:39:30
gift one thing he did tell me was that I
00:39:34
was going to help a lot of people with
00:39:36
my story and I don't know how I'll know
00:39:39
that but I believe him because when
00:39:42
Grandpa speaks I
00:39:46
listen Michelle is not alone many people
00:39:49
say they've had some form of
00:39:51
communication with a dead often through
00:39:53
dreams it's the kind of experience that
00:39:56
is unbelievable
00:39:58
until it happens to
00:40:02
you previously on our show we profiled
00:40:06
the case of Elmer dor an oil company
00:40:08
Courier who was
00:40:11
murdered execution
00:40:15
style the two key suspects were Jerry
00:40:18
Strickland and his 16-year-old
00:40:20
girlfriend Missy
00:40:23
Monday police believ the couple
00:40:25

00:40:35
the

00:40:39
update within minutes of our broadcast
00:40:42
20 viewers in the small community of
00:40:45
Moses Lake Washington called police to
00:40:48
say that they recognized Jerry
00:40:50
Strickland and Missy Monday police later
00:40:53
arrested The Fugitive couple at a
00:40:55
friend's house they had watched the
00:40:57
broadcast and were waiting for the
00:41:00
police all all he say is I'm the guy
00:41:03
you're looking for uh and he
00:41:07
was just real calm and collect uh no
00:41:11
violence at all I figured the time was
00:41:13
about 7 hours and 15 minutes from the
00:41:16
time the Unsolved Mysteries aired and he
00:41:19
was in
00:41:20
custody I this felt super about
00:41:23
it Strickland insisted that he and Missy
00:41:26
Monday we're innocent they got Circle
00:41:30
Stan of evidence all
00:41:32
hearsay it's people talking but no
00:41:36
Witnesses I mean okay that's why you
00:41:40
know I say they're going to learn that
00:41:42
we didn't do this we have enough
00:41:45
evidence circumstantial evidence and
00:41:47
physical
00:41:48
evidence uh that we feel he's guilty all
00:41:51
they want is a conviction and they don't
00:41:53
care if they burn me or not Jerry
00:41:56
Strickland was convicted of kidnapping
00:41:58
and murder his sentence was two life
00:42:01
terms without the possibility of parole
00:42:04
Strickland's girlfriend Missy Mundy
00:42:06
testified against Strickland and was
00:42:09
released after 7 months in juvenile
00:42:11
detention
