March 09, 2017 / 42:49

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the disappearance of Michael Hughes, the kidnapping of Alicia Showalter Reynolds, and the mysterious death of Kurt Sova.

Michael Hughes was kidnapped by Franklin Floyd, who falsely claimed to be his father. Floyd was convicted of kidnapping and sentenced to over 50 years in prison, yet he refuses to reveal Michael's whereabouts. The case is complicated by revelations that Floyd's alleged daughter, Suzanne, was also kidnapped as a child.

Alicia Showalter Reynolds disappeared while driving to a mall in Virginia. Her abandoned car was found with no mechanical issues, and witnesses reported seeing a man trying to lure women with car trouble. Alicia's body was discovered two months later, and Kenneth McDuff was convicted of her murder.

Kurt Sova, a 17-year-old, went missing after attending a party. His body was found in a ravine days later, but the cause of death remains undetermined. His mother, Dorothy, believes there are unanswered questions surrounding his death.

The episode also features two mothers, Donna and Sharon, who believe they have received messages from their deceased children, providing them with comfort and hope.

TL;DR

The episode discusses Michael Hughes' kidnapping, Alicia Reynolds' murder, and Kurt Sova's mysterious death, along with mothers receiving messages from their deceased children.

00:01:29
this is Michael Hughes he is 6 years old
00:01:32
in this picture and he's missing Michael
00:01:35
was living with foster parents when he
00:01:37
was kidnapped by Franklin Floyd who
00:01:40
claims to be his father you're acting
00:01:43
like I walked up to a McDonald's and
00:01:45
took a strange boy and walked off with
00:01:47
him and that's where you're
00:01:49
wrong actually Franklin delanor Floyd is
00:01:53
not the father of Michael Hughes in fact
00:01:57
Floyd was convicted of kidnapping
00:01:59
Michael and was sentenced to more than
00:02:01
5050 years in prison Floyd insists the
00:02:04
boy is alive and safe but he refuses to
00:02:08
tell anyone where Michael is or who is
00:02:11
taking care of
00:02:13
him this case against Franklin Floyd and
00:02:16
Michael Hughes is one of the most
00:02:18
bizarre we have ever profiled it's a
00:02:21
twisted tale of Cruelty and self-d
00:02:23
delusion that defies
00:02:27
belief one fall morning
00:02:30
Franklin Floyd walked into principal
00:02:32
James Davis's office at an elementary
00:02:35
school in Oklahoma City he claimed to be
00:02:38
the father of six-year-old Michael
00:02:40
Hughes he came in he was acting rather
00:02:43
nervous he said what I'm doing is very
00:02:46
difficult he said I'm ready to die if
00:02:49
you don't help me you won't live either
00:02:52
Floyd pulled out a gun he threatened to
00:02:55
kill principal James Davis if he didn't
00:02:57
take Floyd to see Michael immediately
00:03:00
Floyd followed the principal down this
00:03:02
hallway to Michael's classroom he then
00:03:05
forced them both into the principal's
00:03:07
pickup truck Floyd ordered James to
00:03:09
drive out to the country then when we
00:03:12
got down here a ways he told me to to
00:03:16
stop and he had me to get out of the
00:03:19
truck and go into the woods he left
00:03:21
Michael in in the truck and he followed
00:03:24
me into the
00:03:25
woods Floyd handcuffed James to a tree
00:03:28
and left James was rescued several hours
00:03:31
later but for the next 2 months there
00:03:33
was no sign of either Franklin Floyd or
00:03:36
Michael Hughes Floyd was finally
00:03:39
arrested in Louisville Kentucky but
00:03:41
Michael was nowhere to be found when
00:03:44
authorities dug into Floyd's background
00:03:47
they discovered a trail of pathological
00:03:49
behavior that began long before
00:03:54
Michael some 20 years earlier Floyd had
00:03:58
settled in Oklahoma City using the name
00:04:01
Trenton B Davis Floyd had a young girl
00:04:04
and so he told everyone that she was his
00:04:08
daughter Suzanne Floyd moved away 3
00:04:11
years later and for the next decade took
00:04:14
Suzanne from town to town often using an
00:04:18
alias when Suzanne turned 17 she gave
00:04:21
birth to Michael Floyd claimed to be the
00:04:25
boy's father he then married Suzanne the
00:04:28
girl he had been presenting
00:04:30
as his daughter when Michael was two
00:04:33
Suzanne was killed in a mysterious hit
00:04:35
and run accident though he was never
00:04:38
charged the prime suspect was none other
00:04:41
than Franklin Floyd after Suzanne's
00:04:44
death Floyd left Michael in foster care
00:04:47
and disappeared Michael's foster parents
00:04:49
remember him as a child with many
00:04:52
difficulties he was not up to grade for
00:04:55
his age he he was he didn't have muscle
00:04:57
control like he should have uh he did
00:04:59
not talk at all he was very hysterical
00:05:03
he was delayed so severely that he was
00:05:06
in an infant stem class and he tested
00:05:08
out at 9 months Floyd was arrested on a
00:05:12
parole violation 6 months after leaving
00:05:14
Michael a routine blood test revealed
00:05:17
that Floyd was not Michael's biological
00:05:20
father I want to plead for the return of
00:05:23
my son who I love with all my heart I've
00:05:25
never harmed my son and the case has
00:05:27
been reversed by the Supreme Court when
00:05:29
Floyd got out of jail he asked that
00:05:32
Michael be given back to him but his
00:05:35
request was denied I don't need the stes
00:05:37
money for these errors as 6 months later
00:05:40
Floyd kidnapped Michael from his first
00:05:42
grade classroom and Michael has not been
00:05:45
seen sense we would like to have some
00:05:48
information from the public indicating
00:05:49
that this child has either has been seen
00:05:51
out there or is out there somewhere or
00:05:52
they may know something about him being
00:05:54
assaulted or possibly murdered that's
00:05:56
what our interest is but Floyd would not
00:05:59
reveal Michael's location it's none of
00:06:02
your damn business where he's at you
00:06:04
don't have a right to love him care for
00:06:06
him and cherish him cuz he ain't yours
00:06:09
from the start the case of Michael
00:06:11
Hughes has been full of disturbing
00:06:13
twists and turns now there is one
00:06:17
more authorities learn that Michael's
00:06:19
mother Suzanne was not Floyd's
00:06:22
biological daughter after all in fact
00:06:25
she too may have been kidnapped by Floyd
00:06:28
when she was a child that's one of the
00:06:31
biggest mysteries that we have in this
00:06:32
case as to who this girl is we have
00:06:34
absolutely no idea we know that she is
00:06:36
not the biological daughter of Mr Floyd
00:06:39
and we feel that there's a very good
00:06:41
possibility that this young girl may
00:06:42
have been abducted or kidnapped when she
00:06:44
was probably 3 four years of age and we
00:06:46
would like to find out her true identity
00:06:48
we don't know that I'm going to tell you
00:06:50
right
00:06:51
now I did her a
00:06:53
favor she was abandoned to me and I
00:06:55
raised her if I actually told you and
00:06:58
you believed it or I could prove it to
00:06:59
you you know what you do you try to pin
00:07:01
a medal on me for taking
00:07:02
her authorities were able to pin a
00:07:06
murder charge on Franklin Floyd in a
00:07:08
separate case the killing of a
00:07:10
19-year-old named Cheryl keso Floyd was
00:07:14
sentenced to death for that crime but
00:07:16
the fate of Michael Yu remains a
00:07:19
mystery nor have investigators been able
00:07:22
to determine the real identity of the
00:07:25
young woman known as Suzanne Davis
00:07:32
update there are new developments in
00:07:34
this case here's one of our staff with
00:07:37
details when she was just shy of her
00:07:40
21st birthday Suzanne was tragically
00:07:42
struck and killed by a hit- and- run
00:07:44
driver in Oklahoma City in
00:07:46
1990 the investigation into her death
00:07:48
revealed that her real name was Suzanne
00:07:50
Maurice seus and that she had indeed
00:07:52
been kidnapped by Franklin Floyd as a
00:07:55
child the FBI reopened Michael's missing
00:07:58
person case in
00:08:00
2013 eventually Floyd told investigators
00:08:03
what happened to Michael Hughes Floyd
00:08:05
murdered the first grader on the very
00:08:07
same day he had kidnapped him the case
00:08:10
has now been closed by the
00:08:14
FBI next a killer claiming to be a Good
00:08:18
Samaritan targets unsuspecting female
00:08:21
drivers stop
00:08:27
it as children were taught never to get
00:08:31
into a car with a stranger as adults we
00:08:35
sometimes forget that lesson even though
00:08:37
it's a lesson that might mean the
00:08:39
difference between life and
00:08:46
death Baltimore
00:08:49
Maryland I'm going right to the mall
00:08:51
I'll call you when I get there all right
00:08:52
how you getting there 495 to 66 to 29
00:08:56
straight to Charlottesville all right
00:08:57
you got a full tank of gas I filled it
00:08:58
last night good love you I love you
00:09:01
early one spring morning Alysia shalter
00:09:04
Reynolds said goodbye to her husband and
00:09:07
left home it was a Saturday around 7:30
00:09:11
a.m.
00:09:13
byee Alicia planed to drive more than
00:09:16
150 M to spend the day shopping with her
00:09:19
mother in Charlottesville Virginia she
00:09:22
left early giving herself plenty of time
00:09:24
to be at the mall by 10:30
00:09:29
alysia's mother arrived on time
00:09:32
expecting her daughter at any moment but
00:09:35
when Alicia was late s show Walter
00:09:38
became worried right about 11:00 she
00:09:41
wasn't there and I said this is not like
00:09:44
Alisia I wonder what's going on but I
00:09:48
made myself wait till
00:09:50
11:15 and I then finally called her
00:09:53
husband called Mark have you heard from
00:09:56
Alicia no I've been waiting it's over a
00:09:58
half hour
00:10:00
at that point I said you know the
00:10:02
weather is kind of bad this morning you
00:10:03
know there was a little fog there was a
00:10:05
little drizzle could have been some
00:10:06
slick roads maybe she just slowed down a
00:10:08
little bit or you know give her a little
00:10:10
while and give me a call
00:10:14
back s continued to wait an hour passed
00:10:18
then two but Alicia never showed
00:10:23
up at 6:00 that evening a Virginia state
00:10:27
trooper found Alicia's car abandoned
00:10:29
along a highway near cul pepper Virginia
00:10:32
50 m from the shopping mall a white
00:10:36
paper napkin had been tuck under the
00:10:37
windshield wiper a commonly used signal
00:10:40
for car trouble when the car was
00:10:43
examined however there were no
00:10:45
mechanical problems my gut reaction that
00:10:49
immediately was that she was gone that
00:10:52
somebody had abducted her and taken her
00:10:55
I feared the worst but we were told by
00:10:58
many many folks to hope for the best now
00:11:02
we have an update on our top story
00:11:03
tonight as we told you 25-year-old
00:11:06
Alicia Reynolds disappeared this weekend
00:11:08
her abandoned car was the next day the
00:11:11
local news began broadcasting reports of
00:11:13
Alicia's
00:11:14
disappearance you didn't come through
00:11:16
here Saturday morning no not until
00:11:18
afternoon till okay thank you police set
00:11:21
up a roadblock where Alicia's car was
00:11:23
found hoping to track down people who
00:11:26
may have seen something at least three
00:11:29
people claimed they saw Alysia talking
00:11:32
to a cleancut white man with a dark
00:11:35
colored pickup truck and close to 20
00:11:38
women called to say that they had
00:11:40
recently been approached on the same
00:11:43
Highway by a man fitting that exact
00:11:46
description police began to realize that
00:11:49
whatever had happened to Alysia might
00:11:52
have been a nightmarish plot that had
00:11:54
been evolving for weeks
00:12:00
most of the witnesses talked about a man
00:12:02
who would come up behind them or beside
00:12:05
them in a dark small pickup truck
00:12:07
flashing his headlights honking his horn
00:12:10
looking in any way he could to attract
00:12:12
their attention hey lady pull over
00:12:15
there's something wrong with your car
00:12:17
most of the women that did have some
00:12:19
concern for their vehicle did manage to
00:12:22
pull off to the side of the road he
00:12:24
immediately jumps underneath the vehicle
00:12:26
conducts an examination comes out and
00:12:29
then engages them in a conversation a
00:12:30
very polite conversation about the
00:12:33
mechanical uh difficulties that he has
00:12:35
allegedly
00:12:36
uncovered at that point The Helpful
00:12:39
stranger usually offered to drive the
00:12:41
woman to the nearest phone this is it
00:12:44
there's a phone right inside okay great
00:12:47
at least two women accepted his offer
00:12:50
and nothing happened to them bye other
00:12:53
women found the stranger to be anything
00:12:55
but kind and courteous
00:13:00
some of the women would not pull over
00:13:02
for him but merely went to the next exit
00:13:05
or to their destination and had someone
00:13:06
else look at their vehicle no no pull
00:13:08
over lady your car the only instances
00:13:12
where we have found that the individual
00:13:15
became agitated were those instances
00:13:17
where women either refused his
00:13:19
Assistance or refused to pull over for
00:13:21
him and in those instances there was a
00:13:24
display of anger by him such as pounding
00:13:26
his fist on a steering wheel or
00:13:28
murmuring things under his
00:13:30
breath looking at all of the stops I
00:13:33
think we pretty much all agree that he
00:13:35
was getting his courage up if you will
00:13:37
he was practicing getting comfortable in
00:13:40
what he was doing with stopping these
00:13:41
ladies until he found someone that
00:13:43
trusted him enough for him to carry
00:13:45
forward what he intended to
00:13:49
do one week before Alicia disappeared a
00:13:53
woman driving in the neighboring County
00:13:55
apparently fell for the same trick
00:13:59
I didn't mean to scare you but there's
00:14:01
something wrong with your car there's
00:14:02
Sparks coming out of the back of your
00:14:03
car so Sparks yes she said from the
00:14:07
first moment she met him he was
00:14:08
softspoken he seemed to be trustworthy
00:14:11
she had no problem with it at all and uh
00:14:13
she knew that she needed a ride home she
00:14:14
didn't know how to get home so she she
00:14:16
accepted the ride you know I really
00:14:19
appreciate your taking me to the gas
00:14:20
station I don't know what I would have
00:14:22
done hey no problem glad to help out why
00:14:25
are we slowing down I just can't see
00:14:27
anything out of this windshield at Frost
00:14:29
as they were going along the road he
00:14:30
would slow down and make the excuse that
00:14:33
he couldn't see because of the vehicles
00:14:34
behind him and he pulled off the road he
00:14:36
did this three times we beli that he was
00:14:39
trying to establish a place to do
00:14:41
something look if you could just take me
00:14:43
to a phone I can just make a phone call
00:14:48
get stop it what are you doing she
00:14:51
became very frightened she fought him
00:14:54
and he decided he didn't want to fight
00:14:55
with her so he pushed her away get out
00:14:57
of here
00:15:04
the woman broke her ankle but she got
00:15:07
away 7 Days Later Alicia Reynolds was
00:15:12
not so
00:15:14
lucky 2 months after that her body was
00:15:17
found in a wooded area 15 Mi southeast
00:15:20
of C pepper she had been murdered
00:15:23
perhaps on the same day that she had
00:15:26
disappeared I don't want it to happen to
00:15:28
somebody else
00:15:29
that's really my main concern for the
00:15:33
capture of the guy I don't want to hear
00:15:35
about another husband who lost his wife
00:15:37
or another father and mother who lost
00:15:39
their daughter
00:15:41
um that's that's too much there is a
00:15:45
likelihood that the individual has fled
00:15:47
this area possibly the state and may be
00:15:50
in another Community now where he may be
00:15:53
preparing to start the same type of
00:15:55
behavior again authorities were able to
00:15:58
create this composite of the suspect he
00:16:01
is 5' 10 in to 6t tall with a medium
00:16:04
build his hair is reddish brown and he
00:16:07
tends to brush it back frequently with
00:16:10
his left hand he sometimes uses the name
00:16:13
Larry

he die and where was he killed for
00:17:46
Kurt's parents these lingering questions
00:17:48
make his tragic death even more
00:17:53
painful Kurt lived with his parents in
00:17:56
this quiet neighborhood he was the
00:17:58
youngest of four boys and the closest to
00:18:01
his parents he never had any trouble
00:18:04
with the neighbors I never had any
00:18:05
trouble with him in school I never had
00:18:07
any trouble with him with the police
00:18:10
that's why I can't understand what
00:18:14
happened Kurt left home for the last
00:18:17
time late on a Friday afternoon one
00:18:20
block from his house he met up with a
00:18:22
friend how you doing hey nothing much
00:18:25
how about you hey party tonight yeah
00:18:27
where at Su house
00:18:29
did tonight it was not like him to be
00:18:32
gone overnight it was not like him to
00:18:35
stay out after 10 10:30 11:00 the latest
00:18:38
and that was only when we knew where he
00:18:40
was this night he just never came
00:18:43
home when Kurt wasn't home by Saturday
00:18:46
morning his parents began calling his
00:18:48
friends Kurt's father Ken searched for
00:18:51
him around the neighborhood there was no
00:18:54
sign of Kurt Sova
00:18:58
on Sunday the sovas registered Kurt as a
00:19:01
missing person with the police meanwhile
00:19:04
his mother Dorothy covered the
00:19:06
neighborhood with missing person's
00:19:09
Flyers we searched The Ravines searched
00:19:12
the schoolyards I even went so far as to
00:19:14
search dumpsters looking for him on
00:19:18
Sunday afternoon Dorothy learned that
00:19:20
Kurt had been at a party on Friday night
00:19:23
at a duplex less than 2 mil from where
00:19:25
the SAS lived the party was given by a
00:19:28
girl named Susan yeah are you Susan no
00:19:32
Susan isn't here right now when I went
00:19:35
there the girl who had the party was not
00:19:38
there it was another girl could you
00:19:40
possibly have Susan call me when she
00:19:42
gets home tell her it's real
00:19:45
important when the girl returned home
00:19:48
she called me and she said she never saw
00:19:50
my son and she had no
00:19:53
party but a pizza delivery man
00:19:56
contradicted Susan he stated that there
00:19:58
had been a party at the duplex on Friday
00:20:01
night Dorothy contacted Susan again and
00:20:04
this time she admitted that Kurt had
00:20:07
been there Susan also said that more
00:20:10
than a dozen people had stopped by some
00:20:13
of them were older than Kurt and most of
00:20:15
them were people he had never met Susan
00:20:19
also told Dorothy that Kurt had been
00:20:21
drinking heavily those who knew him say
00:20:25
that Kurt was not much of a drinker
00:20:29
come on the fell that Kurt went to the
00:20:31
party with told us that Kurt had become
00:20:34
ill he took him outside for some air and
00:20:37
because it was a chilly night he said he
00:20:39
went upstairs to get Kurt's jacket and
00:20:41
he left him hanging on the
00:20:45
fence he said he went up to get his
00:20:47
jacket and came back down and Kurt was
00:20:50
gone Kurt that's when I think I became
00:20:54
hysterical I thought my God something to
00:20:56
happen to him at that party or in
00:20:58
between the party and home only I didn't
00:21:02
in my wildest dreams expect him to turn
00:21:05
up
00:21:07
Deb 5 days after the party Kurt's body
00:21:11
was found in a ravine just 500 yd from
00:21:14
Susan's duplex we have a young male
00:21:17
probably about 16 or 17 he looks like
00:21:20
it's our belief that his body was dumped
00:21:23
out there and whoever the person or
00:21:26
persons were knew the the area and they
00:21:30
knew that people go back there and kids
00:21:32
play back there So eventually within a
00:21:36
certain amount of time that he would be
00:21:40
found the police searched the area for
00:21:43
Clues they found Kurt's left shoe wedged
00:21:45
in some nearby rocks but they never
00:21:48
found his right
00:21:50
shoe Kurt's body was taken to the
00:21:52
coroner's office for an autopsy it was
00:21:55
determined that he had died only 24 to
00:21:58
30 6 hours before his body was found
00:22:01
which meant that he had been alive for
00:22:04
at least 3 days after he left the party
00:22:07
however the coroner could not determine
00:22:10
the exact cause of death the manner of
00:22:13
death in this particular case was signed
00:22:15
out as probable accidental he hadn't
00:22:18
been beaten in any way he hadn't been
00:22:19
traumatized in any way he didn't have
00:22:21
enough alcohol to end his life he had no
00:22:24
pre-existing natural disease and as
00:22:26
Sherlock Holmes said you eliminate all
00:22:28
other possibilities and that which
00:22:29
remains is the truth this was a
00:22:31
diagnosis by
00:22:33
exclusion I didn't believe that they
00:22:36
couldn't tell me how Kurt died which is
00:22:39
inmaterial to me what they put on that
00:22:41
piece of paper for my peace of mind I
00:22:43
want to know what happened to my
00:22:46
boy Dorothy began to piece together a
00:22:48
series of strange events that occurred
00:22:50
during the 5 days her son was
00:22:53
missing a friend of kurts named David
00:22:56
trusnik claimed that he saw Kurt 3 days
00:22:59
after he
00:23:00
disappeared Kurt and another boy were
00:23:03
walking along a busy street less than a
00:23:05
mile from the S
00:23:07
home I pulled over to offer Kurt a ride
00:23:11
at this point A van pulled up and Kurt
00:23:14
yelled out Franco they both ran over to
00:23:16
the van and they got in the
00:23:19
van I didn't know Kurt was missing if I
00:23:22
would have knew he was missing there
00:23:23
would probably been something I could
00:23:24
have done I could have followed the van
00:23:26
but I didn't know and
00:23:28
two days later he was found dead so that
00:23:31
was the last time I seen
00:23:35
him that same day a stranger who had
00:23:38
been seen around the sova's neighborhood
00:23:41
noticed Kurt's missing poster in the
00:23:43
window of a local record
00:23:45
star there you go thank you okay see you
00:23:48
later all right
00:23:51
bye-bye can I help you with something
00:23:53
see that picture of that boy over there
00:23:56
yeah what about it h you might as well
00:23:58
take it down going to find him dead in 2
00:24:01
days no he's going to know why he
00:24:05
died the manager was skeptical however
00:24:09
she soon had a reason to be afraid the
00:24:13
next day before the Record Shop had open
00:24:15
he left flowers in a note and the note
00:24:19
said roses are red sky is blue they
00:24:22
found him dead and they'll find you
00:24:25
too police briefly questioned the a man
00:24:28
who seemed to be mentally unstable but
00:24:31
there was no evidence he'd committed a
00:24:33
crime and he was released by the time
00:24:36
Kurt was found dead the man had
00:24:39
disappeared but there would be another
00:24:42
lead on the very day Kurt's body was
00:24:44
found Dorothy got an early morning phone
00:24:47
call from Susan the woman who had the
00:24:50
party she told me that someone was
00:24:52
sleeping in her basement and perhaps it
00:24:55
was Kurt and I thought why are you
00:24:57
calling me now after lying to me so many
00:25:00
times I didn't know whether to believe
00:25:02
her or not believe
00:25:04
her I proceeded to go over the house
00:25:06
there and I went down to the basement
00:25:09
and I thought maybe he was sick or he
00:25:13
was hurt and I figured if I got down
00:25:15
there and found them then maybe I can do
00:25:18
something for him there I found a cot
00:25:22
that it looked like somebody had slept
00:25:24
in there but after searching the whole
00:25:26
basement I didn't find any anybody in
00:25:29
there I have no idea if it was Kurt or
00:25:32
not all I know is somebody did sleep in
00:25:34
that c that night and when I got there
00:25:36
they were
00:25:38
gone I think Kurt was there I think he
00:25:42
was already dead in that
00:25:45
c but I think they panicked and got rid
00:25:48
of his body in that
00:25:50
Ravine Dorothy and Ken are certain of
00:25:53
one thing 24 hours before his body was
00:25:57
found Kurt was not in the Ravine Ken had
00:26:01
already carefully searched there and
00:26:04
found nothing I knew it wasn't there the
00:26:07
day that I was searching so they must
00:26:09
have dumped it off that evening I looked
00:26:12
around and I'm sure that if Kurt was
00:26:14
down there I would have noticed that
00:26:15
bright yellow t-shirt that he had on
00:26:18
against any of Terin 3 months after Kurt
00:26:21
died the mystery of his death
00:26:24
intensified the body of Eugene cavette a
00:26:27
boy Kurt used to know was found in
00:26:29
another Ravine on the same street just 2
00:26:32
and 1/2 miles from where Kurt's body was
00:26:35
discovered both boys have been missing
00:26:38
for a few days before they died and
00:26:40
Eugene's right shoe was also never found
00:26:45
the mysterious death of Kurt and Eugene
00:26:47
leave a trail of disturbing questions
00:26:50
and years later Dorothy and Ken are
00:26:53
still searching for answers we still
00:26:56
don't know any more than the day we went
00:26:58
out out looking for him but I believe
00:27:00
that somebody out there knows exactly
00:27:03
what happened to Kurt and they're just
00:27:05
being quiet about it I don't think I
00:27:08
will ever come to peace with myself
00:27:12
until I find my
00:27:13
answers and if I don't find out through
00:27:16
this program I'll keep on searching I'll
00:27:19
search to the day I'm buried
00:27:22
[Music]
00:27:24
myself this case is still open and
00:27:26
classified as a probable accident new
00:27:30
investigators assigned to the case are
00:27:32
hopeful they can determine how Kurt died
00:27:36
if you know anything about the death of
00:27:38
Kurt Sova or Eugene cavette please log

00:28:07
crime Oklahoma City
00:28:11
Oklahoma recently we told you the story
00:28:14
of Meredith Atkinson who was looking for
00:28:16
her birth mother Rosemarie
00:28:19
lutmer in 1938 Rosemary found herself
00:28:23
pregnant and unmarried she looked for
00:28:26
help at a local shelter for unwed
00:28:28
mothers in Oklahoma City it was there
00:28:31
that Meredith was born Meredith I'd like
00:28:34
for you to keep in mind that with
00:28:35
adoption confidential 53 years later
00:28:38
Meredith returned to search for clues
00:28:40
about her past I found out that my
00:28:43
mother had uh one sister and four
00:28:47
brothers they were field workers I would
00:28:50
like to be able to look at her and tell
00:28:54
her mother I understand after watching
00:28:58
our program a private investigator named
00:29:01
Glenda Allen contacted Meredith and
00:29:04
volunteered to help with her
00:29:06
search just 1 month later Merith and her
00:29:09
two children traveled from Arizona to
00:29:11
Oklahoma after Meredith's mother
00:29:14
78-year-old Rosemary lutner was
00:29:19
found hi there Walter Walter glad to
00:29:22
know you Walter Mer's Uncle Walter
00:29:26
rosemarie's brother answered the door
00:29:29
and I at this is this
00:29:32
Rose hi Rose I think that finding my
00:29:36
mother and seeing her and her family has
00:29:39
brought closure to my life you know
00:29:42
Maran
00:29:44
yeah I needed
00:29:47
this you even you were even a great
00:29:49
grandma do you know that
00:29:52
sure I'm just tickled to death she's
00:29:55
here yeah I just wish we was closer
00:29:57
together we could visit visit more often
00:29:59
you know but I plan to go through there
00:30:00
and visit her in Arizona when I go to
00:30:03
see my
00:30:05
brothers it's like gaining a new family
00:30:08
and it's like gaining new friends too
00:30:11
you care care if I call you
00:30:14
mother no
00:30:19
[Music]
00:30:21
no most of us can never imagine that we
00:30:24
will hear a scream in the night and find
00:30:26
ourselves involved in a criminal
00:30:29
investigation and yet that's exactly
00:30:31
what happened to three young men one
00:30:32
night in Austin
00:30:36
Texas at 8:55 p.m. Steve Marx was on his
00:30:42
way to meet his two brothers-in-law at a
00:30:44
friend's house less than a block away he
00:30:47
pulled behind a beige car which was
00:30:50
moving very slowly I followed it down
00:30:54
the street and I pulled in front of my
00:30:56
friend's house
00:30:59
the car in the meantime had pulled up
00:31:01
into the parking garage ahead of my
00:31:03
friend's house and my brother-in-laws
00:31:06
arrived about a minute
00:31:10
later Mike and Bill goens had seen the
00:31:13
same car just two blocks from the house
00:31:16
going the wrong way on a oneway street
00:31:20
and when they stopped and we stopped
00:31:22
they looked at us like what do we do
00:31:23
next and we looked at them like okay you
00:31:26
fools get out of the way
00:31:28
and that gave us an opportunity to see
00:31:30
them but unfortunately there was no
00:31:33
reason for us to try to memorize their
00:31:35
faces or anything there was just two
00:31:36
people passing in the
00:31:39
night 5 minutes later Mike and Bill met
00:31:43
up with Steve the house was just 200 ft
00:31:46
from a 24hour do it yourself car wash
00:31:50
about going out to e go over to my house
00:31:52
for some spaghetti
00:31:54
[Music]
00:31:57
when we were on the porch all we could
00:31:59
see was the side of the car wash so when
00:32:02
we heard the scream and the car door or
00:32:05
trunk slam all we saw was the car pull
00:32:10
out as we saw the car pull out the wrong
00:32:14
way on Fifth Street I realized that that
00:32:16
was the same car that I had pulled
00:32:19
behind on pal Street and that had made
00:32:22
the U-turn in the parking garage
00:32:29
a few seconds later Steve and Bill got
00:32:31
to the car wash and noticed it was
00:32:34
unusually deserted we walked up to the
00:32:37
car we saw a purse the keys and then
00:32:42
Bill suggested I go back to the house
00:32:45
and call the police cuz we figured
00:32:47
something was
00:32:48
wrong the owner of the abandoned car was
00:32:51
identified as 28-year-old Colleen Reed a
00:32:55
certified public accountant who had
00:32:58
lived in Austin for 4 years police
00:33:01
traced Colleen's movements on the day of
00:33:03
the crime she had started her day by
00:33:05
going to church and doing some volunteer
00:33:08
work next she stopped by the bank and
00:33:11
the market she didn't arrive at the car
00:33:13
wash until 9:10 p.m. and that's when
00:33:17
Colleen was kidnapped by two men in the
00:33:20
tan colored car
00:33:35
I'm almost convinced myself that we will
00:33:37
someday see her again that she's being
00:33:39
held somewhere and the reality is that's
00:33:41
probably not true
00:33:43
but there is a
00:33:47
possibility
00:33:49
update the investigation LED police to
00:33:52
Alva Hank warley and Kenneth McDuff
00:33:56
warley admitted his involvement in
00:33:58
Colleen's abduction and pleaded guilty
00:34:00
to a charge of aggravated sexual assault
00:34:03
he was sentenced to 40 years in prison
00:34:07
however warley insisted he did not kill
00:34:10
Colleen Reed Kenneth McDuff was
00:34:13
eventually convicted of murdering
00:34:14
Colleen and was sentenced to death
00:34:18
finally one month before his execution
00:34:21
McDuff LED police to the remains of
00:34:24
Colleen Reed at long last Colleen family
00:34:29
could lay her to
00:34:33
rest next two mothers believe their
00:34:36
children have spoken with them from
00:34:40
Beyond the
00:34:51
Grave fairborne
00:34:54
Ohio at the age of 34 Michael was a
00:34:58
recovering alcoholic his mother Dona was
00:35:01
grateful he was attending AA meetings
00:35:04
and holding down a steady job but after
00:35:08
6 months of Being Sober Michael fell off
00:35:11
the wagon and ran into a park truck
00:35:14
going 65 M
00:35:16
[Applause]
00:35:20
hour he basically died instantly it's
00:35:23
like a part of you gone and it's like
00:35:27
there's a big hole in your
00:35:29
heart it was just 2 months later in a
00:35:32
gift shop that Donna believed she felt
00:35:34
Michael's presence in the middle was a
00:35:37
huge rack of the little porcelain cups
00:35:40
that have your names on them from A to Z
00:35:43
setting off to one side wor two cups and
00:35:45
one said I love you Mom and the other
00:35:47
one said Michael and I felt like Michael
00:35:52
was there with me and he was telling me
00:35:54
it was
00:35:56
okay Weeks Later while in a market
00:35:59
another incident Donna was surprised
00:36:02
when she found an Out ofpl book that
00:36:04
seemed destined for her and I thought
00:36:07
this strange this book why is it sitting
00:36:10
here and there was no writing on the
00:36:12
cover and I opened it
00:36:17
up I am the Ancient Mariner who had a
00:36:20
tale in his heart to be told to all to
00:36:23
someone I am always saying someday you
00:36:26
must meet my mother
00:36:29
it mentioned the Ancient Mariner and
00:36:32
Michael used to refer to himself as the
00:36:34
Ancient
00:36:35
Mariner I started crying when I read it
00:36:39
Donna says the most dramatic
00:36:41
Communications involve both the time of
00:36:43
Michael's accident 620 and the time of
00:36:47
his death
00:36:48
633 while working at home Donna claims
00:36:51
her digital clock was flashing 620 even
00:36:55
though that wasn't the real real time
00:36:58
that was the time of the accident and
00:37:00
all the other digital clocks in the
00:37:02
house were fine he was just letting me
00:37:04
know that he was there Donna says that
00:37:07
14 months after Michael's death she
00:37:10
heard his voice on her answering machine
00:37:14
the message was recorded at
00:37:17
6:33 it was only two words follow me
00:37:21
Saturday 6:33
00:37:24
p.m. end of message
00:37:28
and I was
00:37:30
dumbfounded I had his friends come over
00:37:32
and listen to it his sisters listen to
00:37:36
it and it is Michael's voice Donna is
00:37:40
convinced that the messages from Michael
00:37:42
are meant to bring her Comfort but
00:37:44
others have a different explanation
00:37:48
there's no greater loss than the loss of
00:37:50
a child emotionally um driven people in
00:37:54
a state of grief tend to to see things
00:37:58
in their
00:37:59
environment that connect them to their
00:38:02
lost loved ones Donna's experience is
00:38:05
not an isolated incident there have been
00:38:08
other similar
00:38:10
stories Sharon troop believes that her
00:38:12
daughter Wendy has appeared to her
00:38:15
several times Wendy was a freshman in
00:38:18
college when she was the victim of a
00:38:20
date rape shortly after she became
00:38:23
depressed and committed suicide Wendy
00:38:26
was only 19 years old her mother was
00:38:29
devastated and spent the days after her
00:38:32
daughter's death in an emotional Fog she
00:38:36
says it was then that Wendy paid her a
00:38:39
visit I was looking down a hallway and
00:38:42
it was very bright and she looked at me
00:38:46
as if to say I am so
00:38:48
sorry I made the hugest
00:38:51
mistake and I can't take it back and she
00:38:55
turned around and she walked through the
00:38:57
door door and that was it she was
00:39:01
[Music]
00:39:03
gone a few months later Sharon
00:39:06
experienced a second
00:39:08
sighting a friend of Wendy's named Owen
00:39:11
rented a movie to try to lift Sharon in
00:39:13
her husband Bill's Spirits something
00:39:16
caught my eye looked over by the door
00:39:18
and Wendy was standing there she was
00:39:20
dressed in a real comfortable girl type
00:39:23
flannel shirt and she smiled at me and
00:39:26
she looked over at all
00:39:28
one and then she was
00:39:30
gone this time I didn't cry so I
00:39:33
honestly felt that she was letting me
00:39:35
know that she was so pleased that Owen
00:39:38
was spending time with us and we were
00:39:40
together so that we could help one
00:39:42
another it was the following Christmas
00:39:45
that Sharon received what she calls
00:39:47
definitive proof that Wendy is still
00:39:50
with her doing okay I just really miss
00:39:53
her I know sweetie we all do we all miss
00:39:56
her so much at a holiday party across
00:39:58
the street from their home Sharon and
00:40:01
Bill were visiting with friends but then
00:40:03
Sharon became upset and went home are
00:40:06
you sure I'm fine I'm fine I wasn't home
00:40:09
about 10 minutes and Bill called me from
00:40:12
across the street and he said I have
00:40:14
something to tell you and it's really
00:40:16
important and I want you to stay up when
00:40:19
Bill returned home he told Sharon that a
00:40:21
friend of their neighbor claimed to have
00:40:24
had an unusual experience involving
00:40:26
Wendy just weeks after she died she saw
00:40:31
Wendy she just saw her face and there
00:40:35
weren't any words but she was absolutely
00:40:39
positive that it was
00:40:42
windy it was probably about a month
00:40:45
after Wendy had
00:40:48
died I saw a girl and it was kind of
00:40:51
just a head shot it just kind of zoomed
00:40:53
in on me and I felt this tremendous
00:40:56
energy it kind of like if you've ever
00:40:58
been shocked by Electrical Fence you
00:41:01
know the little warm surge of current
00:41:04
that you feel through your body but I
00:41:05
could just sense that she wanted to tell
00:41:07
her parents that she was okay now and
00:41:10
she was finally at
00:41:13
peace she saw her I think it was a gift
00:41:16
from God so to let her come back for us
00:41:19
to see because somebody could tell you
00:41:22
that you wouldn't believe
00:41:24
him seeing something is totally
00:41:26
different
00:41:28
the real question is is there actually
00:41:31
an afterlife that people who die go to
00:41:35
and that they're actually not gone and
00:41:37
if we're going to look at this question
00:41:39
objectively and scientifically and not
00:41:41
emotionally then we have to answer
00:41:44
nobody knows Sharon and Donna will
00:41:48
continue to find comfort in the messages
00:41:50
they believe are left for them by their
00:41:54
children some people say to me do you
00:41:56
believe in the after your life do you
00:41:57
believe that there's something Beyond
00:41:59
yes I do if you choose not to believe
00:42:02
that that is your privilege me I'm going
00:42:06
to believe it
