The first case focuses on Donald Smith, who was found dead after a traffic accident in Denver, Colorado. His daughter Brenda recounts their complicated relationship and the tragic events leading to his murder, including a hitchhiker who may have been involved.

The second case involves 16-year-old Kathy Hobbs, who vanished while walking to a supermarket in Las Vegas. Her mother, Vivien, shares her fears and the haunting premonitions Kathy had about her life. Tragically, Kathy's body was discovered in the desert, and the investigation into her abduction remains unsolved.

The episode also features Linda Tellington-Jones, a therapist known for her unique touch therapy, which she uses to help animals like tigers and whales. Her methods show remarkable results, calming aggressive animals and aiding in their recovery.

Finally, the episode highlights the emotional reunion of Nikki Crowder and her childhood friend Sharita, whom she promised to name her daughter after, fulfilling a promise made during their hospital stay.

00:02:28
to a man named Donald Smith from hemid
00:02:31
California donal's wife hadn't heard
00:02:34
from him for 12 days what started out as
00:02:37
a simple traffic accident would soon
00:02:39
turn into a bizarre case of
00:02:48
murder when Don left hemt he was headed
00:02:51
to Idaho to visit his daughter Brenda
00:02:54
except for his two dogs Don was
00:02:56
traveling alone Brenda was the only
00:02:59
child from Don's first marriage for most
00:03:02
of her life she and her father have been
00:03:04
kept
00:03:06
apart my mother kept me away from my
00:03:08
father they didn't get along real well
00:03:11
after the divorce and I think I only saw
00:03:14
him like once um up until the time my
00:03:16
mother died and then I started searching
00:03:17
for him uh he was searching for me as
00:03:20
well when Brenda was 26 years old she
00:03:24
and her father were finally
00:03:26
reunited you know he was very protective
00:03:28
of me and if any one ever you know if I
00:03:31
ever had a problem he said you know just
00:03:32
let me know I'll take care of it for you
00:03:34
you know he was kind of a macho man I
00:03:35
guess basically it was a real good
00:03:38
relationship my father drank um which he
00:03:41
didn't do very often you know thank God
00:03:44
he turned into kind of a different
00:03:46
person when he was
00:03:49
drunk the day after Don Smith left home
00:03:52
he and another man pulled up in front of
00:03:54
the hospital where Brenda worked as a
00:03:56
nurse Don stayed in the truck while His
00:03:59
companion
00:04:00
went in hi I'm looking for Brenda Walker
00:04:02
she's not working today the receptionist
00:04:04
referred the man to Brenda's supervisor
00:04:07
John slain yeah this is
00:04:09
John slain went outside to talk to Don
00:04:12
he you're branda's dad yeah where's my
00:04:16
baby girl Brenda yeah he was obviously
00:04:18
had been drinking and he said where's
00:04:22
Brenda at and I said well she's on
00:04:24
fishing with her girlfriend the guy that
00:04:27
was driving leaned over you know to get
00:04:29
the
00:04:34
directions 15 mil away Brenda and her
00:04:37
two friends had given up fishing and
00:04:39
stopped by a Tavern near the
00:04:42
lake the door opened and everyone in the
00:04:45
bar turned around there was a a black
00:04:48
man that had come in and he closed the
00:04:49
door he had sunglasses on took the
00:04:51
sunglasses off and uh looked around for
00:04:54
a few minutes I think he was probably
00:04:55
allowing his eyes to adjust to the
00:04:57
darkness then he walked into the the
00:05:00
restroom
00:05:01
and about probably a minute later um
00:05:05
this man came in with wild hair and his
00:05:07
shirt was untucked hi is there a Brenda
00:05:10
Walker in
00:05:11
here I want
00:05:13
D it took me a minute to really realize
00:05:16
who he was it was my father he looked so
00:05:19
different from the last time I saw him
00:05:22
and he hugged me and sat at the bar with
00:05:25
me for a minute and I realized that he
00:05:27
was drunk and I went into the restroom I
00:05:30
was a little upset because he had showed
00:05:31
up drunk and it kind of embarrassed me
00:05:33
in front of my friends she's such a
00:05:35
sweetheart I sure missed her I went into
00:05:37
the restroom I came back out you okay
00:05:39
uhhuh how about you I want to be with
00:05:41
you so much he starts crying immediately
00:05:43
and he's babbling and he's talking about
00:05:45
how he doesn't want to be alive anymore
00:05:47
and how he's got cancer and he was going
00:05:49
to be with my mother in heaven and then
00:05:52
His companion came out of the restroom
00:05:56
hey the black man just kept on walking
00:05:58
you know he kind of looked looked over
00:05:59
at my father and then just kept walking
00:06:01
like he didn't really know who he was
00:06:03
and went out and got into the truck and
00:06:04
got into the driver's seat of my
00:06:06
father's truck I don't know he looked
00:06:08
real impatient looked disgusted with
00:06:10
being
00:06:11
there yeah I don't want to hear you cry
00:06:14
I don't want to hear this why don't you
00:06:15
just go get a motel room sober at and
00:06:18
then come back and talk to me tomorrow
00:06:19
about
00:06:21
it anyone want to fight in here let go I
00:06:26
can FP anyone in here when her father
00:06:28
became belligerent Brenda Walked Out Of
00:06:30
The
00:06:33
Saloon after a few minutes Don followed
00:06:36
Brenda outside but she left without
00:06:38
speaking to
00:06:40
him I wish that I would have had more
00:06:43
patience with him I wish I would have
00:06:45
understood his situation I wish I would
00:06:47
have you know tried to be more
00:06:49
compassionate with him it was the last
00:06:51
time I saw him he he opened up the the
00:06:54
camper and let the dogs out and let them
00:06:55
run around and I just drove away
00:07:01
two weeks later in the high desert
00:07:03
outside Twin Falls a couple out for
00:07:05
their morning walk made a horrifying
00:07:08
Discovery think better follow the
00:07:12
police police were called in to remove
00:07:14
and identify the dead
00:07:17
body we observed a body that appeared to
00:07:21
have been thrown over the guard rail
00:07:23
laying down uh the body was decaying for
00:07:27
approximately 2 weeks we could not
00:07:29
recognize him at that point there was no
00:07:32
identification found around him or on
00:07:35
him at this time we had no idea who we
00:07:37
had we just had another John do an
00:07:40
autopsy was done and we found a blung in
00:07:43
marks on the back of the head indicating
00:07:46
cause of death was by
00:07:50
blent also outside of the guard rail
00:07:52
where possibly the victim was thrown
00:07:54
from uh we found a sack with a bottle of
00:07:57
wine in it it was just taken as
00:08:01
evidence the twinfalls sheriff's
00:08:03
department had no idea who the body was
00:08:06
until they heard about the truck that
00:08:08
had been abandoned about 700 mil away in
00:08:11
Denver Denver Police had sent out a
00:08:14
teletype indicating that they had a
00:08:17
vehicle involved in an accident that
00:08:20
possibly was involved in a homicide so I
00:08:23
called the Denver uh police department
00:08:25
and they gave me the name of a
00:08:27
subject Donald Smith
00:08:30
fingerprints positively identified the
00:08:32
dead man as Donald
00:08:35
Smith police began to piece together the
00:08:38
events that led up to Don's
00:08:40
murder on the day he left home he ran
00:08:43
into trouble with a trailer that he was
00:08:45
Towing just outside Las Vegas he
00:08:48
arranged to leave it with a local
00:08:51
man one theory is that soon after Don
00:08:54
left Las Vegas he picked up a hitchhiker
00:08:58
at some point along the away they
00:09:00
started
00:09:10
drinking the day after he saw his
00:09:13
daughter Don turned up in Park City
00:09:17
Utah he called his sister and Vancouver
00:09:20
asking her to wire him
00:09:23
[Music]
00:09:25
$200 when Dan picked up the money he was
00:09:28
with someone who looked exactly like the
00:09:30
man Brenda had seen with her father in
00:09:33
the
00:09:35
bar police believe that the hitchhiker
00:09:38
murdered Don for the money when he
00:09:40
stopped to let his dogs out for a
00:09:46
run on boy come Bo the murder weapon was
00:09:51
probably the Jack handle grabbed from
00:09:54
the rear of the
00:09:58
truck
00:10:01
I want to know why he killed my father I
00:10:03
want to know why he took my my father
00:10:05
away from me and away from my children
00:10:08
my father was the only family I
00:10:11
had this composite of Don Smith's
00:10:14
mysterious companion was made from
00:10:16
various eyewitness accounts he is black
00:10:19
but with relatively light skin he's
00:10:22
about 6 ft tall and weighs around 180 lb
00:10:27
today he would probably be in his 50s he
00:10:30
may use the name Larry Monroe and might
00:10:33
once have lived in Blackfoot
00:10:37
Idaho if you have any information about

00:11:25
America 16-year-old Kathy Hobbs is
00:11:27
reading a romance novel in her bedroom
00:11:30
at 11:00 p.m. she decides to walk to the
00:11:33
local supermarket just 1 and 1/2 blocks
00:11:35
away to buy another
00:11:38
book she came out to me and she said Mom
00:11:40
I'm going down to the store and buy a
00:11:42
book and she said give me a kiss before
00:11:45
I go and I said right I'll be up when
00:11:48
you get back and she says well she says
00:11:50
I probably will stop and talk to the
00:11:52
kids so you might be in bed when I get
00:11:54
back so I gave her a kiss and that was
00:11:58
the last I saw of
00:12:01
her Kathy often walked to the store late
00:12:03
at night usually her friends hung out at
00:12:06
the apartment swimming pool so Cathy's
00:12:09
mother Vivien wasn't worried about
00:12:13
her assuming that Kathy would be with
00:12:15
her friends viven went to
00:12:20
sleep then at 3:00 a.m. a strange dream
00:12:24
woke her up I woke up at a sound sleep I
00:12:29
felt like I had been hit on the head and
00:12:32
all of a sudden I got a very peaceful
00:12:33
feeling and it was well it's over
00:12:37
now and I fell back to
00:12:40
sleep the next morning Vivian discovered
00:12:43
that Kathy's bedroom was
00:12:47
empty within the first day we had track
00:12:50
down friends uh relatives and done a
00:12:54
very extensive media campaign on the
00:12:57
television with Cather 's picture all
00:13:00
day long at the end of the second day we
00:13:02
were pretty much convinced that
00:13:03
Catherine was probably
00:13:06
abducted Kathy's family had been
00:13:08
terribly worried about her as a child
00:13:11
she had frightening premonitions several
00:13:14
of them that she would die at an early
00:13:16
age when she was eight she became even
00:13:19
more specific telling her friends that
00:13:21
she would not live past the age of
00:13:26
16 she did not have a happy
00:13:29
childhood her father and I went through
00:13:31
a divorce when she was 8 years old she
00:13:34
and her father were extremely close when
00:13:37
she was in the seventh grade a very good
00:13:39
friend of hers died of a heart disease
00:13:42
that affected Kathy very
00:13:45
much and that's one of the main reasons
00:13:47
we moved to Las Vegas was to give Kathy
00:13:50
another chance to get away from that
00:13:53
atmosphere and the environment that she
00:13:55
grew up
00:13:56
in after the move Kathy BL blossomed and
00:13:59
made new friends but as her 16th
00:14:02
birthday approached her old fear of
00:14:05
dying
00:14:07
returned she got very teared one night
00:14:10
and told me Mom I don't want to get any
00:14:12
older I want to be a little
00:14:15
girl and I told her I said Cathy we all
00:14:18
have to grow up and you know it's it's
00:14:20
not the easiest thing in the world to do
00:14:21
but we all do it she told me I'm not
00:14:24
going to she didn't think she'd make her
00:14:27
16th birthday
00:14:29
Kathy spent all of her time in her room
00:14:32
and would not leave the
00:14:34
house and then on the morning of her
00:14:37
16th birthday she was surprised and
00:14:40
relieved to find that she was still
00:14:42
alive and she came out of her bedroom
00:14:46
and she said Mom I did it I did it I
00:14:48
made it and I said what and she said I
00:14:49
made 16 I didn't think I'd live to be
00:14:53
16 Kathy now seemed to have a new
00:14:56
enthusiasm for life she began to go out
00:14:59
again and started making plans for her
00:15:02
future she was ecstatic she came out she
00:15:05
goes I made it Mom I made it I'm
00:15:07
16 I did it I'm
00:15:15
alive after Kathy vanished police
00:15:18
assumed that she had been abducted and
00:15:20
issued photos to the media eventually
00:15:24
one crucial clue
00:15:26
surfaced a clerk remembered seeing Kathy
00:15:29
in the supermarket the night she
00:15:30
vanished store receipts confirmed that
00:15:33
someone did purchase a paperback novel
00:15:36
at
00:15:37
11:17 that night apparently Kathy had
00:15:40
made it to the store but not
00:15:45
home this intersection is a large
00:15:48
intersection widely traveled and the
00:15:50
store is a 24-hour major store and to
00:15:54
have people coming and going from the
00:15:55
store and nobody seeing anything with
00:15:58
was very very
00:16:01
surprising 9 days after Kathy vanished a
00:16:04
hiker was searching for rock crystals
00:16:06
out in the desert near Lake me was
00:16:09
walking back to the car and was probably
00:16:11
150 ft 200 ft from the road and was
00:16:15
stopped by a very strong odor decided to
00:16:19
see where it was coming from or what it
00:16:21
was and that's when I found Catherine's
00:16:26
body it was the most horrible thing I'd
00:16:29
ever seen in my life I had to sit down
00:16:31
and and gather my thoughts and and make
00:16:34
sure that what I was looking at was
00:16:37
real within probably 20 minutes of our
00:16:39
arrival we knew it was Catherine there
00:16:41
was no doubt in our own minds that it
00:16:43
was going to be
00:16:45
Catherine and it does get very quiet and
00:16:49
uh you can't help but look at it and see
00:16:51
your own children and say for the grace
00:16:53
of God there goes one of
00:16:55
mine you want to run home grab your
00:16:59
daughter by the arm and bring her to the
00:17:01
scene and say this is why I say no you
00:17:04
can't go out late at
00:17:07
night Tire prints at the scene showed
00:17:09
where a vehicle had pulled in turned
00:17:12
around and left investigators also found
00:17:15
two rocks spattered with Cathy's blood
00:17:19
the coroner concluded that she died from
00:17:21
repeated blows to the
00:17:24
Head she was 16 years 3 months and 3
00:17:27
days old when she was killed so she made
00:17:30
it to
00:17:31
16 but uh not much after that but she
00:17:34
was right you know she did have this
00:17:37
premonition that she wasn't going to
00:17:39
live to be an
00:17:41
adult after Kathy's death letters were
00:17:44
found in her room addressed to each
00:17:47
member of the family they were dated 1
00:17:50
month before her 16th
00:17:52
birthday dear Mother in event of my
00:17:56
death you shall get this letter
00:17:59
I hope you live happily and I don't want
00:18:01
you or anyone else to dwell on my death
00:18:06
I love you all very dearly you are good
00:18:09
to me and nobody else could have been a
00:18:11
better mother keep me alive in your
00:18:14
heart and don't ever forget me love
00:18:17
always
00:18:19
Kathy exactly 3 months after Kathy
00:18:22
vanished A call came in to the Las Vegas
00:18:25
Police Department their answering
00:18:27
machine recorded this message from a man
00:18:30
who may have witnessed her
00:18:32
abduction grabbed this girl in front of
00:18:35
the uh uh store on Desert in in
00:18:38
Maryland this is a few months ago I've
00:18:40
been out of town for a few months and I
00:18:41
wrote this down because she was
00:18:43
screaming and they pull her in the car
00:18:44
she's a very young girl wearing a white
00:18:47
uh jacket and pink pants and the guy's
00:18:50
name he holler to him push you in the
00:18:51
car her his name was
00:18:55
Robbie the theory that we have is is
00:18:58
that she was abducted uh between the
00:19:00
store and her apartment uh by one or
00:19:03
more suspects uh we think she was driven
00:19:06
to the lake that night I believe that
00:19:09
she was abducted and killed that
00:19:16
evening the caller reported the license
00:19:19
number of the car but did not leave his
00:19:21
name or phone number the police checked
00:19:24
the license number and discovered it did
00:19:27
not exist
00:19:29
and the witness still has not called
00:19:33
back today the murder of Kathy Hobs
00:19:36
remains unsolved her mother and the Las
00:19:39
Vegas Police hope that the witness will
00:19:42
call back and give more details or that
00:19:44
someone watching May recognize the voice
00:19:47
of the mysterious
00:19:49
caller update there are new developments
00:19:53
in this case here's one of our staff
00:19:55
with
00:19:56
details while the the witness never
00:19:59
contacted authorities and was never
00:20:00
located this case has been closed an
00:20:04
alleged serial killer named Michael Lee
00:20:06
lockheart was a key suspect in Cathy's
00:20:08
murder after his arrest for another
00:20:10
murder he was put on trial convicted and
00:20:13
has since been
00:20:15
executed next how can the touch of a
00:20:18
human hand ease the pain of a suffering
00:20:21
tiger this woman has the
00:20:27
answer
00:20:30
[Music]
00:20:35
KO the killer whale escaped to the open
00:20:37
sea in the film free Willie but in real
00:20:41
life Koo suffered from a strange wlike
00:20:44
growth called the papala beneath his
00:20:46
pectoral
00:20:48
fins for 10 years no one was able to
00:20:52
cure it then Linda tellington Jones came
00:20:55
along with a technique she calls the tea
00:21:00
touch when I was asked to work with k
00:21:03
with the touches I really didn't know if
00:21:05
it would help him or not what I was
00:21:07
hoping is that these little circular
00:21:10
touches would actually affect the cells
00:21:12
and help to reduce the effects of this
00:21:14
virus like
00:21:16
papala koo's handlers saw results almost
00:21:21
immediately the day after Linda was with
00:21:25
Koo we we saw big changes on the
00:21:29
papiloma um it was very thin and it it
00:21:34
wasn't broken as always
00:21:37
is so he was active also he was like
00:21:41
kind of very
00:21:48
happy Linda next tried her hand at the
00:21:51
Out of Africa Wildlife Park in Phoenix
00:21:55
Arizona a 400 lb Bengal t tiger named
00:21:58
Kipling had joints that were inflamed
00:22:01
and very painful Linda was convinced
00:22:04
that she would be able to help by the
00:22:06
tea touch her own system of therapeutic
00:22:10
touching they're a collection of
00:22:13
circular touches done all over the body
00:22:17
with the idea with the intent of waking
00:22:20
up the functioning of the
00:22:22
cells jumping more than he
00:22:25
we to make the connection I did big
00:22:28
circles and say feel you feel you and
00:22:30
then when I really went into the joints
00:22:32
it's this very directed connection so
00:22:35
that he really feels the intent of
00:22:38
waking up those cells it's like turning
00:22:40
on the electric lights of the
00:22:41
body it seemed to calm him down and his
00:22:45
body relaxed and his breathing came
00:22:47
heavier um so he was going into a a deep
00:22:50
uh relaxed state by her touch when she
00:22:53
got to a point where it was obvious he
00:22:55
his joints hurt him he reacted but not
00:22:57
violent in any way so now we know where
00:22:59
to touch and where he really needs it
00:23:00
just from from what she did with that
00:23:02
that session with
00:23:03
him the Siberian tiger named Genesis
00:23:07
offered the most dangerous test for
00:23:09
Linda's tea touch therapy Genesis had
00:23:12
been known to attack anyone within reach
00:23:15
even the handlers he had known for
00:23:18
years he has attacked me I have a
00:23:20
personal experience with Genesis where
00:23:22
he actually went through my arm and uh
00:23:25
way into my
00:23:26
arm
00:23:29
it was much too risky for Linda to go
00:23:31
inside the Tiger's
00:23:33
enclosure from outside she got it Bobby
00:23:36
in performing The Tea touch while
00:23:38
another Handler kept Genesis calm by
00:23:41
letting him lick her
00:23:43
fingers if there's a way you can keep
00:23:45
him sucking and you reach back and you
00:23:48
can get to the neck and shoulders and at
00:23:50
least te touched seemed to be working
00:23:53
Genesis hadn't attacked anyone yet keep
00:23:58
the primary contact with the hand where
00:24:00
he feels safe up on the shoulder and the
00:24:02
other one just kind of moves
00:24:04
back and up there what we find is that
00:24:07
the touches override fear or
00:24:11
aggression those are instinctive
00:24:13
responses and that when we do these
00:24:16
little circular touches all over the
00:24:18
body you can take an animal who is very
00:24:21
fearful or an animal who is aggressive
00:24:23
and suddenly you change them at a core
00:24:25
level at the level of the brain as
00:24:28
skeptic you know I don't I don't
00:24:29
understand part of her philosophy of Dr
00:24:32
Irvin Ingram a phoenix veterinarian had
00:24:35
treated jesis several times though he
00:24:38
had doubts about touch therapy Ingram
00:24:41
watched with an open mind in the end he
00:24:44
concluded that Linda had made an impact
00:24:47
quietly around the base of the something
00:24:50
certainly made a difference and she's
00:24:52
the primary difference I guess today but
00:24:55
there's no question from this morning to
00:24:56
this afternoon much calmer seems almost
00:24:59
aware of what's around him instead of
00:25:00
being in his own little world I don't
00:25:02
know why it works I don't really know
00:25:04
how it works we only know from
00:25:06
experience in six continents with
00:25:09
Incredible numbers of animals and people
00:25:12
that it does work but it's a
00:25:15
mystery there are more than 1,300
00:25:18
practitioners of the tellington method
00:25:20
in 26 countries lenda has written over a
00:25:24
dozen books that have been published in
00:25:26
different languages
00:25:28
She was recently inducted into the
00:25:30
massage therapy Hall of
00:25:35
Fame next it was only a childhood
00:25:38
promise made during a brief Hospital
00:25:40
stay decades later the girl who made
00:25:44
that promise was finally able to keep
00:25:56
it
00:25:59
mommy when she was just 7 years old
00:26:02
Nikki Crowder was in a hospital in Los
00:26:05
Angeles to have several tumors removed
00:26:07
from her throat that's where she met
00:26:10
8-year-old Sharita Lyn Harding who had a
00:26:13
very rare and a very dangerous form of
00:26:17
cancer I looked up to Sharita because
00:26:20
when she was older and she was there
00:26:23
first so she kind of initiated me of
00:26:25
what you know being in a new place new
00:26:29
atmosphere the two girls became close
00:26:31
friends
00:26:34
overnight there was a bond there because
00:26:37
we mattered to one another we looked out
00:26:39
for what went you know went on and we
00:26:42
had something in common and that was our
00:26:44
illnesses
00:26:47
itself a few weeks after they met
00:26:50
Sharita went through several hours of
00:26:52
grueling surgery mommy is this going to
00:26:56
happen to me no honey this isn't going
00:26:58
to happen so that's when my mother
00:27:00
explained to me that charita had had a
00:27:04
very very delicate surgery and that she
00:27:07
wouldn't be able to have
00:27:10
kids and I remember feeling like oh that
00:27:13
you know was just the worst thing in the
00:27:16
world that night Nikki did her best to
00:27:20
comfort her
00:27:21
friend I'm sorry you're feeling so
00:27:24
bad does it hurt
00:27:28
I said you don't have to cry
00:27:31
because if I ever have a baby I said you
00:27:35
can share it with me and we can both be
00:27:38
its mommy I said and I'll even name it
00:27:41
Sharita after you don't worry after 5
00:27:44
weeks Nikki was released from the
00:27:46
hospital the two friends never saw each
00:27:50
other
00:27:53
again more than 20 years later Nikki
00:27:57
wanted to find her old friend so she
00:27:59
could be godmother for the christening
00:28:01
of Nikki's three-year-old daughter who
00:28:03
she named Sharita in honor of her friend
00:28:08
I
00:28:10
promise
00:28:12
update a few minutes after we first
00:28:14
broadcast Nikki story we learned that
00:28:17
Sharita Lin Harding was alive and well
00:28:20
and living in
00:28:22
Oklahoma 21 years after they said
00:28:25
goodbye the two friends were reunited at
00:28:28
Nikki's home in Los
00:28:31
Angeles oh my God I can't believe a long
00:28:35
time I'm so glad to see you hi I'm so
00:28:39
glad you're alive I don't think Nikki
00:28:42
has changed that much she was always
00:28:44
caring giving person seems like she's
00:28:47
still the same she would have to be to
00:28:50
try to find me and you know all these
00:28:52
years and be so persistent about
00:28:55
it Nikki was finally able to keep her
00:28:59
promise protect her all the child of her
00:29:03
life it's a gift you can't buy it's the
00:29:05
most perfect gift in the world and it
00:29:07
comes from God and nobody should be
00:29:09
deprived of that whether they have it
00:29:11
naturally or can share it with somebody
00:29:14
and that's something that I wanted to
00:29:15
share with Sharita because of all the
00:29:18
joy and strength she you know she gave
00:29:20
me I could give her back something that
00:29:23
she missed Lord bless them even as God
00:29:26
Parents
00:29:28
being a godmother is special to me
00:29:29
because I don't have any kids and and
00:29:32
it's giving me like a child of my own
00:29:34
that I you know can
00:29:38
share I'm just honored and so I try to
00:29:41
live up to it best as I
00:29:44
can I Christ the

Crowder near nearly 400,000 Americans
00:29:59
are victims of gang violence each year
00:30:02
many are innocent bystanders caught in
00:30:05
the crossfire who don't even belong to a
00:30:07
gang victims like Kevin
00:30:12
[Music]
00:30:14
wheel Hawaiian Gardens California just
00:30:17
south of Los
00:30:19
Angeles it was here that Teresa wheel's
00:30:22
only son Kevin was Gunn downed by four
00:30:25
suspected gang members
00:30:28
Kevin was what you might say a typical
00:30:32
teenager he loved his music really loud
00:30:34
he was a little bit on the shy side he
00:30:38
had a sense of humor you wouldn't
00:30:40
believe and he always always had a smile
00:30:43
on his
00:30:45
face Hawaiian Gardens had its share of
00:30:48
gang activity and Kevin knew several
00:30:50
gang members it was a casual Association
00:30:55
that proved
00:30:56
fatal
00:30:59
on the night that he was killed Kevin
00:31:01
spent the evening at a friend's house he
00:31:03
was driving home around 11:30 p.m. when
00:31:07
according to eyewitnesses a car began to
00:31:10
follow
00:31:26
him
00:31:31
[Music]
00:31:38
Kevin was struck twice in the head and
00:31:40
three times in the back an hour later he
00:31:43
was dead police immediately suspected it
00:31:46
was a gang
00:31:48
shooting some of Kevin's friends were
00:31:51
Hawaiian Gardens gang members but that
00:31:54
doesn't mean that Kevin was a gang
00:31:56
member he just associated with them and
00:31:59
I feel the other gang recognized the car
00:32:03
and they just keyed on the car and not
00:32:05
the occupants of the
00:32:08
vehicle I didn't want Kevin's case to be
00:32:11
just another gang related shooting I
00:32:13
didn't want it to be another shooting
00:32:15
that went unsolved I made a promise that
00:32:18
I would do everything in my power to
00:32:20
catch these guys who murdered him
00:32:23
Kevin's parents would not sit still they
00:32:26
posted thousands of Flyers around the
00:32:28
area where he was shot when the
00:32:30
investigation first started I thought
00:32:32
you know there was so much information
00:32:34
at first that this probably wouldn't be
00:32:35
no problem and being that Kevin wasn't a
00:32:38
gang member you know people would talk
00:32:41
but I was really
00:32:43
wrong gang shooting investigations are
00:32:47
very frustrating within the gang culture
00:32:50
the reason the uh Witnesses are not
00:32:54
coming forward is because they feel that
00:32:57
that being a snitch is worse than death
00:33:00
itself get I hope so the hardest part
00:33:04
for Stan and I right now is I think
00:33:06
dealing with the anger the anger that
00:33:09
our son is dead and buried in a grave at
00:33:12
19 there was no Rhyme or Reason Why
00:33:16
anybody would want to shoot Kevin he's
00:33:17
never been any fights or disagreements
00:33:20
with anybody I mean he was just you know
00:33:23
19-year-old out having
00:33:25
fun it was just so senseless it's so
00:33:28
stupid it was and still is such a shock
00:33:31
that something like this could
00:33:34
[Music]
00:33:37
happen police believe Kevin killers were
00:33:40
four males possibly Hispanic they were
00:33:43
driving a white compact car and may have
00:33:45
been members of a gang based in nearby

00:34:02
coming up a woman is convinced that
00:34:05
she's been contacted from Beyond the
00:34:07
Grave by the spirit of her
00:34:18
daughter the death of a family member is
00:34:20
one of the most difficult experiences
00:34:23
any of us will ever face so it's not
00:34:26
surprising that many people wish that
00:34:28
they could somehow speak with a lost
00:34:30
loved one in our next story we'll meet a
00:34:33
woman who believes that she got that
00:34:35
chance after the death of her
00:34:40
daughter Karen Walker was the only child
00:34:43
of Jean and Tom Walker Karen was very
00:34:47
bright read extensively uh from the time
00:34:50
she was about three I no longer had to
00:34:52
read to her she would read the stories
00:34:54
to me instead which was wonderful there
00:34:57
was one story that symbolized the
00:34:59
closeness Karen and her parents felt for
00:35:02
each other the Three
00:35:05
Musketeers The Familiar phrase all for
00:35:08
one one for all became the Walker family
00:35:12
Motel when Karen was 17 the Family
00:35:15
Circle expanded to include her new
00:35:18
boyfriend Jim
00:35:20
Alvarado Karen and Jim seemed an
00:35:22
unlikely match Jim came from a large
00:35:25
workingclass family he was a poor
00:35:28
student who had been told that he would
00:35:30
never amount to much but Karen knew
00:35:33
better she saw something in me in terms
00:35:35
of of potential as far as my intellect
00:35:37
was concerned she didn't know you know
00:35:40
what I lacked necessarily in academic
00:35:42
skills although over that period of time
00:35:43
in study hall she began to to learn and
00:35:46
she began to help me even then the
00:35:48
Clause may be renaming the subject when
00:35:50
Jim's mind would wander Karen had her
00:35:53
own special way of getting him back on
00:35:56
track
00:35:57
pay attention you're not going to get
00:35:59
into college this way and she would get
00:36:01
my attention and and I would straighten
00:36:03
up and and and get back to work and and
00:36:06
do what I had to do she was my tutor she
00:36:09
was my helper she was my friend and
00:36:13
somebody who I love very very
00:36:15
much Karen was only 20 when tragedy
00:36:18
struck the cause of a lingering pain in
00:36:21
her right leg was finally
00:36:23
diagnosed Karen had Ying SAR coma a rare
00:36:28
and usually fatal form of
00:36:31
cancer we reacted with horror but with
00:36:35
determination we were going to see to it
00:36:37
that she got well the Three Musketeers
00:36:39
were going to stay
00:36:40
together Karen began an exhaustive
00:36:43
series of radiation and chemotherapy
00:36:46
treatments oh hello hello after two
00:36:49
months of treatment how you feeling
00:36:50
Karen suffered a painful
00:36:55
setback o
00:36:57
Karen woke up about 5:00 in the morning
00:37:00
Mom pain in her leg for the first time
00:37:03
in a long time she had been going
00:37:04
through Cobalt therapy and the pain had
00:37:07
disappeared and suddenly the pain was
00:37:10
excruciating my leg it hurts it
00:37:13
hurt okay can't moving the cancer had
00:37:16
eaten the bone completely through the
00:37:18
bone was no longer
00:37:21
there through it all karen Spirits
00:37:24
remained strong and hopeful
00:37:27
in March Jim proposed and they started
00:37:30
to plan their
00:37:32
wedding but only 12 days before the
00:37:35
ceremony Karen lapsed into a coma minute
00:37:39
but I think we're losing
00:37:41
her remember what we used to say about
00:37:44
the Three Musketeers how we'd always
00:37:47
stick together huh one for all and all
00:37:51
for
00:37:53
one I learned that the tumor had gone
00:37:56
into into the
00:37:57
brain I knew we had reached the
00:38:01
end she woke up in the middle of the
00:38:04
night and I held her hand and asked
00:38:07
her how she was because that was the
00:38:09
first time she had talked to me in 9
00:38:14
days Mom it's
00:38:17
time I can't go on like this anymore I
00:38:21
can't think anymore I
00:38:25
understand is it okay
00:38:27
okay of course please tell Dad and tell
00:38:32
Jim that it was my decision that I was
00:38:35
ready to go I will I
00:38:40
promise and as I was
00:38:42
watching something went out of the top
00:38:45
of her head it just lifted and it was
00:38:48
like a whsp of smoke or or fog or
00:38:51
something and as I saw that happen I
00:38:53
said goodbye
00:38:55
Karen
00:38:59
Karen died on December 17th two days
00:39:02
before she would have been
00:39:05
married the night after Karen died Jim
00:39:08
stayed at her parents house he tried to
00:39:11
study and keep from thinking about his
00:39:13
enormous loss but Jim was about to get
00:39:16
his first hint that Karen's Spirit had
00:39:20
survive
00:39:25
death it was more than a kick it was
00:39:27
really an Awakening on my part that got
00:39:29
my
00:39:30
attention and I realized that at that
00:39:33
point that you
00:39:34
know Karen was was with me at that
00:39:39
point Karen's parents Tom and Jean were
00:39:42
also searching for Comfort over the next
00:39:45
few days they went to psychics and
00:39:47
mediums hoping they might contact Karen
00:39:50
Spirit three times they tried and three
00:39:53
times the Walkers went away disappointed
00:39:57
then they went to see a medium Jean had
00:40:00
read about the Reverend George daisley
00:40:03
Jean and Tom agreed to limit the
00:40:05
information they gave the Reverend they
00:40:08
only told him that their daughter had
00:40:10
recently died but they did not give him
00:40:13
Karen's name please take a seat I knew
00:40:16
they were graving parents I knew nothing
00:40:18
about them whatsoever otherwise nothing
00:40:23
whatsoever Daisy's first comments amaz
00:40:26
da I will tell you everything that she
00:40:30
says your daughter is here she is safe
00:40:34
she is
00:40:36
well she says she doesn't hurt
00:40:40
anymore she wants me to tell you that
00:40:42
you were the Three Musketeers and you
00:40:44
still
00:40:45
are she says we are the Three Musketeers
00:40:49
and we'll always be
00:40:53
together I was just flabbergast Ed that
00:40:57
he could come up with the one piece of
00:41:00
information that was so specific to
00:41:03
us I think if he had said nothing else
00:41:06
that day I would always always know that
00:41:10
Karen was still
00:41:13
alive I'm hearing the name Karen yes yes
00:41:17
it's
00:41:18
Karen it's her birthday soon I believe
00:41:22
yes the details literally Spilled Out of
00:41:24
Reverend daisley the Three Musketeers
00:41:27
Karen's name her birth date even
00:41:30
detailed descriptions of two photographs
00:41:32
taken when Karen was just a
00:41:36
child we went home
00:41:40
smiling and crying but there was always
00:41:44
from then on there was that underlying
00:41:46
current of I know she's
00:41:51
okay according to Jean Karen eventually
00:41:54
began to communicate without the help of
00:41:56
a medium and later guided her to write
00:41:59
this book always Karen it describes
00:42:03
Karen's struggle with cancer her death
00:42:05
and her firsthand views of Life Beyond
