Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 7, Episode 19

March 09, 2017 / 42:50

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers several intriguing cases, including the murder of a woman found on Interstate 70, the possibility of reincarnation related to Pearl Harbor, and the ability of dogs to detect illnesses.

The first case focuses on the unsolved murder of a woman whose body was discovered behind a truck stop in Licking County, Ohio. Reporter Michael Barons connects this case to a series of similar murders of known prostitutes found along major interstates. He uncovers a pattern linking eight victims, prompting local authorities to form a special task force.

The second segment features a woman under hypnosis who recalls detailed memories of the Pearl Harbor attack, despite being born years later. Her therapist, Frank Baronowski, records her sessions where she identifies as John Gillespie, a sailor during the attack. Investigations reveal some corroborating details, but questions remain about the validity of her memories.

Another case examines the tragic car accident of Aileen Conway, which her husband suspects was a murder rather than an accident. Conflicting evidence leads to an investigation that suggests foul play may have occurred.

The episode concludes with stories of two women, Nancy Best and Darlene Worm, whose dogs alerted them to serious health issues. Their experiences raise questions about the remarkable abilities of dogs to sense illnesses.

TL;DR

This episode features unsolved murders, possible reincarnation, and dogs detecting illnesses.

00:02:36
years and 100 miles apart murder cases
00:02:40
are often solved when a pattern becomes
00:02:42
apparent and in these Highway killings
00:02:45
the pattern was just waiting to be
00:02:49
discovered the man who made the
00:02:51
connection wasn't actually looking for
00:02:53
it reporter Michael Barons was starting
00:02:56
to research a newspaper article about
00:02:58
serial killers
00:03:00
I had remembered a statement that an FBI
00:03:02
agent had once said that prostitutes
00:03:04
make the ideal serial killer Victim
00:03:06
Because they're transient and often
00:03:08
their disappearances aren't reported
00:03:10
immediately so I started looking at
00:03:12
prostitute deaths all across Ohio
00:03:14
primarily using newspaper stories as the
00:03:17
way to track those
00:03:19
dust Barons began to cross reference
00:03:22
unsolved murder cases in Ohio to his
00:03:25
surprise a distinct pattern began to
00:03:27
emerge eight women in eight different
00:03:30
counties had been beaten or strangled to
00:03:32
death each was found alongside a major
00:03:35
Interstate each was a known or suspected
00:03:39
prostitute all these women who were
00:03:41
killed in Ohio also worked at truck
00:03:44
stops or were last believe to have been
00:03:46
working at a truck stop and that was the
00:03:47
third major factor that started tying
00:03:50
these dusts
00:03:51
together Barons began looking into the
00:03:54
little known subculture of Ohio's
00:03:57
Interstate Truck Stops you drive by them
00:04:01
and you see these these restaurants and
00:04:02
these trucks but until you sit there you
00:04:04
don't see what the underbelly the
00:04:06
underworld of these little Min cities
00:04:08
that form each night and then break
00:04:10
apart each morning and come
00:04:13
together see you next time sweetie yeah
00:04:15
you take care Baron's discovered a
00:04:17
flourishing sex for sale industry at
00:04:20
truck stops throughout the state the
00:04:23
prostitutes work off a CB radio and it's
00:04:26
all done anonymously the The Prostitute
00:04:29
will get on the radio and give her
00:04:30
handle in some little catchphrase that
00:04:32
she's developed as her trademark and the
00:04:34
truck will answer back and say yeah this
00:04:36
is the blue Peter built in Row 3 come
00:04:38
meet me and she goes off to the truck
00:04:40
and then usually when she gets in the
00:04:42
truck she'll use the trucker CB to radio
00:04:44
to her next
00:04:47
customer 27-year-old Anna Marie
00:04:50
Patterson was the sixth known victim in
00:04:53
Ohio in reviewing the investigation of
00:04:55
her murder Baron's uncovered several
00:04:58
possible Clues to the Killer's
00:05:01
identity hey there guys this is uh
00:05:03
Sleeping Beauty if you're looking for a
00:05:05
Good Time come back anamarie had been
00:05:08
working at a truck stop in Austin town
00:05:11
just south of Cleveland Witnesses said
00:05:14
her last call was from a driver of a
00:05:16
black or dark blue Peterbuilt truck the
00:05:20
man used the CB handle Dr no how you
00:05:23
doing sleeping beauty turn up come on up
00:05:27
how you doing tonight great my God it's
00:05:30
freezing out
00:05:31
[Music]
00:05:33
there 25 Days Later Anam Marie's body
00:05:36
was found alongside Interstate 71 north
00:05:40
of
00:05:41
Cincinnati anamarie was found about 250
00:05:45
mi from where she was last seen uh in a
00:05:48
field in a drainage uh ditch in about uh
00:05:52
4 to 6 Ines of
00:05:54
water her head had been bashed in and
00:05:57
she was brutally beaten she wasn't just
00:05:59
killed she was mutilated in
00:06:02
essence Anam Marie's autopsy revealed
00:06:04
that she had been killed within 48 Hours
00:06:07
of her disappearance the condition of
00:06:09
her body clearly indicated that the
00:06:12
killer had kept it refrigerated for
00:06:14
nearly a
00:06:16
month there has been some speculation
00:06:18
that some of these victims have been
00:06:20
driven many more miles than the actual
00:06:23
distance from last seen to found there
00:06:26
may be an indication that the Killer is
00:06:28
doing something with the these victims
00:06:30
after
00:06:34
death according to Barons The Killing
00:06:36
Spree began 9 years earlier with the
00:06:39
murder of a woman who has never been
00:06:41
identified since then the bodies of
00:06:44
seven other victims have been found
00:06:46
along interstates in different counties
00:06:49
each woman had been viciously beaten or
00:06:51
strangled to death each had jewelry and
00:06:54
clothing removed from her body a
00:06:57
newspaper in Columbus Ohio ran Michael
00:07:00
Baron's shocking story with its
00:07:02
compelling evidence that the murders of
00:07:05
the eight women were the work of one
00:07:08
killer 10 days later the Ohio attorney
00:07:11
general and the Buckeye state Sheriff's
00:07:14
Association formed a special task force
00:07:17
we were finding that uh what was
00:07:20
happening in one County was not
00:07:22
necessarily being told to another County
00:07:24
and a clue in one County that may have
00:07:26
meant nothing uh may have meant a great
00:07:28
deal in just the adjacent
00:07:30
County one of the clues in this case
00:07:33
suggests a disturbing possibility about
00:07:36
the Killer's
00:07:37
identity this killer scatters these
00:07:40
bodies and that's the big question why
00:07:42
there's even been speculation that the
00:07:45
killer could be a security guard or even
00:07:46
a former police officer who knows enough
00:07:49
about police investigative techniques to
00:07:51
do
00:07:55
that at least two of the victims were
00:07:58
last seen getting in to a black or dark
00:08:00
blue Peterbilt tractor possibly pulling
00:08:03
a refrigerated trailer the driver may
00:08:06
use the CB handles Dr No Stargazer or
00:08:10
Dragon I'd like to be able to say that
00:08:13
we know now whether it's one person and
00:08:15
whether it's a Serial murder the truth
00:08:17
is that we don't uh and while that is uh
00:08:20
certainly a plausible Theory at this
00:08:22
point it's nothing more than
00:08:24
that if you have any information about

next under hypnosis a woman has detailed
00:08:39
memories of a World War II battle even
00:08:42
though it was fought before she was
00:08:53
born Pearl Harbor
00:08:57
Hawaii for those who Sur surviv that the
00:09:00
surprise attack was a horrific battle
00:09:03
forever seared into memory but is it
00:09:06
possible that someone who wasn't there
00:09:09
can also remember the day of
00:09:16
infamy

00:10:01
Harbor and yet she remembers the attack
00:10:04
in startling
00:10:07
[Music]
00:10:09
detail can a living person have the
00:10:12
memories of someone who's been dead for
00:10:14
more than a decade it may seem
00:10:16
impossible but that is exactly what this
00:10:19
case seems to
00:10:22
suggest the waight the subject of this
00:10:24
story has asked to remain anonymous
00:10:27
we'll call her Sharon little
00:10:28
apprehensive she first visited
00:10:30
hypnotherapist Frank baronowski because
00:10:33
she wanted help losing weight ever been
00:10:36
hypnotized before no do you know
00:10:38
anything about it at all no not really
00:10:40
under hypnosis Sharon experienced a
00:10:42
terrifying scene of smoke and fire years
00:10:45
a recurring nightmare that had plagued
00:10:47
her since
00:10:52
childhood water's on
00:10:55
fire water's
00:10:58

all right Shar all right all right relax

00:11:05
now uh the dreams started when I was
00:11:08
very small I always remember having the
00:11:11
dreams about fires and
00:11:13
explosions through hypnosis Sharon did
00:11:16
lose 30 lb but the nightmares remained
00:11:20
unexplained 6 months later she visited
00:11:23
Hawaii for the first time on a group
00:11:24
tour with Frank baronowski and some of
00:11:28
his friends
00:11:29
it was strange when I was there because
00:11:31
there were places that I I went to when
00:11:34
I was there that it was like I've been
00:11:36
here before I've seen this I knew where
00:11:38
things were that I couldn't have known
00:11:43
about Sharon's visit to the Battleship
00:11:45
Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor
00:11:48
triggered the same anxiety as her
00:11:50
reoccurring nightmare she returned to
00:11:53
her hotel room and asked baronowski to
00:11:56
hypnotize her during the session Sharon
00:11:59
began to speak as never before and a new
00:12:03
identity emerged his name was John gpie
00:12:07
Brea very deep I said when I reach the
00:12:09
count of 12 you'll be in the 12th season
00:12:12
of your life and suddenly when she's
00:12:13
there uh she's talking like a
00:12:15
12-year-old what's your name John John
00:12:18
gby I'm a junior oh where you at on the
00:12:23
farm what farm I says where you at she
00:12:25
what this is
00:12:27
Omaha Omaha yeah W omo
00:12:31
Nebraska
00:12:33
toing as the session continued Sharon
00:12:36
related a chilling account of the attack
00:12:39
on Pearl
00:12:41
Harbor there bombs dropping everywhere
00:12:43
they're everywhere playing Super wild
00:12:46
bers with
00:12:50
it Sharon mentioned specific names and
00:12:53
ranks Captain scandin paym Cooper and
00:12:57
insen Robert tosac don't worry about me
00:13:01
take him forward take him for Ste the
00:13:03
main gun tosac was especially prominent
00:13:05
in Sharon's account because he was so
00:13:07
badly
00:13:09
injured a few minutes later Sharon's
00:13:12
story came to a sudden
00:13:15
end she realized that John Gillespie had
00:13:19
been
00:13:21
killed de relax for me up to that point
00:13:26
I had not had a past life regret ression
00:13:30
I wanted to know more about what had
00:13:32
happened and and who the person was that
00:13:34
I felt I was in this traumatic
00:13:37
experience I just had how about your
00:13:39
grandfather what's his name over the
00:13:41
next few months Sharon underwent
00:13:44
regressive hypnosis 20 more times
00:13:47
barowski recorded the details of each
00:13:50
session Sharon speaking as John
00:13:53
Gillespie listed the names of nine men
00:13:56
serving on his ship the USS Nevada
00:13:59
as well as Gillespie's serial number
00:14:02
Frank contacted the office of
00:14:04
congressman John rhods for help Bob
00:14:07
scanlin Senior Aid to the congressman
00:14:10
was assigned the case have a chair thank
00:14:12
you when he first asked for our help and
00:14:15
brief me on the problem I was pretty
00:14:17
skeptical I thought you know we get a
00:14:20
lot of strange requests and this has to
00:14:21
be one of the strangest I know it's
00:14:24
rather incredible but she gives me names
00:14:26
dates and places of people I have no way
00:14:29
checking here when I heard the story and
00:14:31
listened to the tapes I figured that our
00:14:34
office in Washington certainly should be
00:14:36
able to get into Naval archives and
00:14:38
either prove or disprove what this young
00:14:40
lady had
00:14:42
said using Congressional privileges
00:14:45
scanland obtained the ship's roster of
00:14:47
officers from the National
00:14:49
Archives amazingly eight of the nine men
00:14:52
Sharon mentioned were
00:14:55
listed I remember when I received that
00:14:58
and first read it
00:14:59
I told my secretary that I don't know
00:15:01
whether to point with pride or view with
00:15:03
alarm this was a a strange result that I
00:15:06
really didn't
00:15:07
expect the one missing name was Robert
00:15:10
tosac the man whose injury was so vivid
00:15:13
in Sharon's story Navy records showed
00:15:16
him to be in Long Beach California on
00:15:18
the day of the attack go go go but when
00:15:21
we contacted toic he confirmed that he
00:15:24
was on board the USS Nevada that day in
00:15:28
fact he had to have his leg amputated as
00:15:32
a result of his injuries however the
00:15:34
name John Gillespie does not appear on
00:15:36
any of the ship's rosters there may be a
00:15:39
practical reason for that
00:15:42
Omission the Navy admits the only
00:15:44
records that They Carried were the pay
00:15:46
Master's records on board that ship the
00:15:48
fires raged incessantly for two days all
00:15:51
of that was
00:15:53
destroyed another fire ended any attempt
00:15:56
to verify the serial number of John GL
00:16:00
in
00:16:00
1973 Flames ravaged the naval Warehouse
00:16:03
in St Louis destroying the service
00:16:06
records of thousands of seamen from
00:16:08
World War II uh how about your
00:16:11
grandmother Sharon's past life memory
00:16:13
also included information about John
00:16:16
glp's personal life under hypnosis she
00:16:20
stated that he was born in 1921 in Omaha
00:16:23
Nebraska he was the son of John
00:16:25
Gillespie senior the grandson of Harry
00:16:29
Gillespie in Census records from
00:16:32
1899 Frank found what he believes is
00:16:34
proof that John Gillespie did exist when
00:16:38
we came across this Frame we found it
00:16:40
Harry
00:16:41
Gillespie wife ID son Benjamin son John
00:16:46
and that John was John Gillespie's
00:16:48
father and he would have been 24 years
00:16:51
old when John was born exactly the right
00:16:54
age how valid are Sharon's so-called
00:16:57
past life experiences
00:16:59
at least one expert feels that this is
00:17:02
not a case of past life
00:17:05
memories well the information about
00:17:07
tosic is easily available to anyone who
00:17:11
looks for it in a book that tells a
00:17:14
story the events at Pearl Harbor have
00:17:19
probably been as written
00:17:22
about as any incident in this
00:17:25
Century no she never did any reading
00:17:28
about Pearl Harbor it was one of those
00:17:30
things that she just didn't care for
00:17:32
when somebody would mention she would
00:17:33
just shut her own and just walk away
00:17:35
does he have another name as head read
00:17:37
mm he asks leading questions of his
00:17:42
subjects he seems to take control of the
00:17:47
progression rather than
00:17:49
allowing the person involved to be in
00:17:53
control and to
00:17:54
volunteer
00:17:57
information to refute this suggestion
00:17:59
that they had secretly rehearsed their
00:18:01
story both Frank and Sharon took line
00:18:05
detector tests Glenn Whiteside a board
00:18:08
certified polygraph examiner for 20
00:18:11
years analyzed the results in my opinion
00:18:15
Sharon and Frank absolutely are not
00:18:19

evidence in this case under hypnosis

next a Grizzly traffic accident may
00:19:13
prove to be arson and a cover up for a

coldblooded

00:19:33
Oklahoma a farmer working his Fields
00:19:36
noticed smoke rising from a nearby
00:19:38
[Music]
00:19:39
Road he called the authorities and 20
00:19:42
minutes later the Oklahoma Highway
00:19:44
Patrol arrived at the
00:19:48
scene they found a burning car embedded
00:19:51
in a deserted Bridge the heat was so
00:19:54
intense that the car had actually melted
00:19:57
into the metal car
00:20:00
rail when the highway patol arrived a
00:20:03
body was inside the car at the time but
00:20:06
it was funeral exercise whatsoever to
00:20:08
try to get to the occupant in the car
00:20:11
due to the car had already burned so
00:20:15
bad the body behind the wheel was burned
00:20:18
beyond recognition skid marks indicated
00:20:21
that the car speed at impact was 50 to
00:20:24
60 mph to the highway patrol it seemed
00:20:28
like just another senseless
00:20:31
accident
00:20:33
100t a computer check revealed the car
00:20:36
belonged to Pat Conway who lived with
00:20:39
his family in lton 15 mil from the crash
00:20:42
site the next day the victim was
00:20:45
identified as aen Conway Pat's wife of
00:20:49
33
00:20:52
years authorities reported alien
00:20:55
Conway's death as an accident but soon
00:20:58
Pat noticed a number of conflicting
00:21:00
facts which led him to doubt the
00:21:02
official version he concluded that his
00:21:05
wife had been
00:21:08
murdered there's no doubt in my mind it
00:21:10
was
00:21:11
murder and if I live to be 100 years old
00:21:14
I'll still be pushing to try to find the
00:21:17
individual or possibly two individuals
00:21:19
whoever was
00:21:23
involved pat first became suspicious
00:21:26
when he returned home a few hours after
00:21:28
after his wife's
00:21:29
death he found the patio door wide
00:21:33
open aileen's purse which she always
00:21:36
carried with her have been left behind
00:21:39
her driver's license and her glasses
00:21:41
were
00:21:42
inside an ironing board was set up and
00:21:45
the iron left
00:21:47
on water from a garden hose was running
00:21:50
into the backyard swimming
00:21:52
pool in the master bathroom the tub was
00:21:55
still full of water and the phone was
00:21:58
off the hook the uh thing that really
00:22:01
got my attention was the phone being off
00:22:03
the hook as though she' attempted to
00:22:05
make a phone call possibly the police
00:22:08
department we have no way knowing who
00:22:10
between me and the kids one would see
00:22:13
one thing and one another and we start
00:22:15
putting it together and and right away
00:22:18
we find out well that was no accident at
00:22:22
all there was another disturbing detail
00:22:25
that nagged that Pat what was aen doing
00:22:28
out on that lonely Country Road neither
00:22:31
of them had ever been in the area
00:22:33
nothing about his wife's death made
00:22:35
sense Pat contacted Ray Anderson of the
00:22:39
District Attorney's
00:22:41
Office the first impression that I had
00:22:44
when I met with Mr Conway was that of a
00:22:46
spouse that was left alone and behind uh
00:22:50
not expecting the tragedy that happened
00:22:53
and looking for an excuse or looking for
00:22:55
some reason why this happened other than
00:22:58
than just being an accident however when
00:23:00
you start looking at the extenuating and
00:23:02
surrounding circumstances the way that
00:23:04
she left her house then it leads you to
00:23:06
believe that there is a possibility that
00:23:08
there could be foul
00:23:12
play a few days later Pat and Ray
00:23:14
Anderson went to the crash site looking
00:23:17
for
00:23:18
Clues Pat could you come over here a
00:23:20
minute Ray found the church bulletin in
00:23:23
the grass a considerable distance from
00:23:26
the bridge yeah this is the Buon out of
00:23:29
our car from the previous Sunday and it
00:23:31
was on the dash of the
00:23:33
car aen always drove with the windows
00:23:37
rolled up and the air conditioning
00:23:39
turned on the bulletin could not have
00:23:42
flown out of a moving car the car would
00:23:45
have to be
00:23:46
stopped someone else may have been with
00:23:48
her opened the door set the accelerator
00:23:51
and slammed it into drive hoping to run
00:23:53
Mrs Conway off into the creek and make
00:23:56
it appear as it was an accident
00:23:59
[Music]
00:24:01
as a result of Anderson's investigation
00:24:03
the lton district attorney changed the
00:24:05
official cause of death from accidental
00:24:08
to
00:24:09
unexplained the da then asked the
00:24:12
Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation
00:24:14
and the State Fire Marshal to evaluate
00:24:17
the possibility of
00:24:20
arson what made me suspicious at first
00:24:22
was looking at the photographs and
00:24:24
seeing how much burn that was in the
00:24:27
vehicle this thing was complet
00:24:28
burnt destroyed the burn was similar to
00:24:31
that where gasoline or something that
00:24:34
like that was used in it and another
00:24:36
thing that brought my curiosity up was
00:24:38
the fact that the gas cap was missing
00:24:41
and most arson cases and this is
00:24:44
documented of a vehicle the gas cap is
00:24:48
removed um and that was the case
00:24:52
here informal burn tests on dashboard an
00:24:56
a poolery samples from a car similar to
00:24:58
Al suggest the inside of her car may
00:25:02
have been DED with gasoline we took the
00:25:06
material and we applied a blowtorch to
00:25:08
it set the material on fire then removed
00:25:10
the blowtorch and the fire went out
00:25:13
which is consistent with a flame
00:25:14
[ __ ] type material and then we took
00:25:17
some gasoline and soak material and then
00:25:19
of course the thing was completely
00:25:21
destroyed and the point being without
00:25:22
some type of an exellant like gasoline
00:25:25
the fire would not burn that
00:25:27
bad
00:25:29
if aen Conway was murdered on that
00:25:31
bridge that day that raises two
00:25:34
questions who killed her and why we
00:25:38
don't really have an answer for what put
00:25:40
her out there a lot of theories floating
00:25:42
around perhaps she interrupted a
00:25:44
burglary we backtracked a little bit
00:25:46
into the neighborhood and apparently
00:25:48
there had been uh reports of burglaries
00:25:50
in the weeks and months preceding uh
00:25:52
this situation so the possibility of an
00:25:54
interrupted burglary is
00:25:57
there
00:26:03
even though you're discouraged you you
00:26:05
keep pushing it every day it's on your
00:26:07
mind all time but somehow it needs to be
00:26:11
solved I'll never quit as far as trying
00:26:14
to solve
00:26:15

next can a dog really diagnose a deadly
00:26:35
illness simply by using its
00:26:43
[Music]
00:26:46
nose dogs have been domesticated for
00:26:49
thousands of years and many breeds are
00:26:52
prized for their Keen sense of smell
00:26:55
whether finding someone who's lost track
00:26:58
a fugitive or sniffing out explosives
00:27:01
the strength and accuracy of a dog's
00:27:03
nose is
00:27:05
legendary if you were to take a gigantic
00:27:08
football stadium that NFL teams play in
00:27:11
and fill the entire stadium with yellow
00:27:13
tennis balls and had one white tennis
00:27:15
ball they can smell the one white tennis
00:27:17
ball in an entire
00:27:19
Stadium using this powerful sense of
00:27:21
smell is it possible that a dog can
00:27:25
actually diagnose life-threatening
00:27:32
illness you're about to meet two very
00:27:34
unusual pets it may seem hard to believe
00:27:38
but their owners say that they have
00:27:40
persuasive evidence that dogs can save
00:27:43
lives in mysterious
00:27:47
ways Garberville
00:27:51
California hey got your latte working
00:27:53
right now Nancy best seemed to have it
00:27:56
all she was the mother of three healthy
00:27:58
children and owned a successful coffee
00:28:01
shop called the Java joint in fact
00:28:04
business was going so well that she had
00:28:06
recently opened a second
00:28:09
store and coffee despite ny's hectic
00:28:13
lifestyle her yellow lab Mia was always
00:28:17
nearby Nancy had gotten Mia as a puppy
00:28:21
Mia was the first dog that ran up to me
00:28:22
at the time I didn't know if I wanted a
00:28:24
boy or a girl um until she came up to me
00:28:27
and I fell in love with her instantly
00:28:29
yes and you were such a good dog nany's
00:28:32
mornings were spent running the coffee
00:28:34
house you helped mommy oh thank you no
00:28:37
Mom's tired me but about 1:00 each
00:28:39
afternoon Nancy set aside time just for
00:28:43
herself and Mia I would drive home and
00:28:47
lay on the couch and take a nap before
00:28:48
I'd have to pick up my daughter from
00:28:50
school um so I can recharge my batteries
00:28:51
for the rest of the
00:28:53
day and then one afternoon out of the
00:28:56
blue Mia began to act
00:28:59
strangely she came up and started
00:29:02
sniffing and licking at my breast and um
00:29:04
because she was 8 months pregnant I
00:29:06
thought maybe she was kind of wigging
00:29:07
out um so I didn't pay any attention to
00:29:10
it I just went and told her to lay down
00:29:11
what do you want
00:29:14
down but Mia was persistent the
00:29:17
following evening as Nancy was
00:29:19
struggling to fall asleep Mia began
00:29:21
tugging at the bed covers she started
00:29:24
biting my shirt away like a dog bites
00:29:26
fleas little tiny nibbles and was trying
00:29:29
to pull my shirt away from my from my
00:29:31
body enough
00:29:33
enough I was starting to get upset with
00:29:35
it ouch desperate for her much needed
00:29:38
sleep Nancy banished Mia to the
00:29:44
backyard the following day during nany's
00:29:46
afternoon break Mia did the same thing
00:29:50
Mia jumped up on my lap while I was
00:29:52
sitting up and dove with her nose into
00:29:54
my chest and the force of the pressure
00:29:57
of her nose made rub it because it hurt
00:29:59
and when I rubbed it is when I felt the
00:30:02
lump Nancy was stunned to discover a
00:30:05
lump in one of her breasts I had had a
00:30:08
negative breast exam by a physician just
00:30:10
four months prior there was no cancer in
00:30:13
my family I was 39 not old enough for a
00:30:16
routine mamogram so I was thinking this
00:30:18
couldn't be cancer but the the lump felt
00:30:20
very odd it was quite large medical
00:30:24
tests showed that Nancy had a cancerous
00:30:26
tumor in her breast go Al lumpectomy
00:30:28
confirmed the worst she had a stage 2
00:30:32
invasive ductile carcinoma a very
00:30:35
aggressive form of breast cancer when I
00:30:38
first heard about Nancy best case I
00:30:41
talked to an oncologist at the Mayo
00:30:42
Clinic about that and one of the things
00:30:44
that we surmised there was that there
00:30:46
was a certain smell that was being
00:30:48
secreted the type of tumor that she had
00:30:50
in her breast may have had a certain
00:30:51
kind of an odor you have to remember
00:30:53
this kind of breed of dog is actually
00:30:54
used for hunting you know they have a
00:30:56
very sensitive nose
00:30:59
Nancy had a partial mastectomy months of
00:31:02
chemotherapy and radiation therapy
00:31:04
followed she has been cancer free ever
00:31:08
since the doctor believes that had this
00:31:10
cancer not been detected at this time
00:31:12
within 6 months it could have entered my
00:31:14
lymph nodes and I would have
00:31:17
died if it's possible for a dog to sniff
00:31:20
out cancer are there even more profound
00:31:23
life-saving powers that a pet can offer
00:31:27
Darlene worm of Spokane Washington says
00:31:31
yes she believes that her dog shadow is
00:31:34
a prime
00:31:36
example he was the best medicine that I
00:31:41
could have ever taken if it was in a
00:31:43
pill form he'd be a miracle
00:31:46
drug after Darlene was diagnosed with
00:31:50
diabetes she had a series of medical
00:31:53
setbacks while recovering from open
00:31:55
heart surgery she suffered a stroke
00:31:58
for a while she lost her ability to
00:32:02
speak after several years of therapy
00:32:05
Darlene recovered Her speech but had a
00:32:07
problem with stuttering at a family
00:32:10
reunion the anxiety of being in a crowd
00:32:13
made the stutter even worse I was so
00:32:17
nervous I couldn't talk again and this
00:32:21
little snower named Maggie came up to me
00:32:24
and started licking my hand I started
00:32:27
petting her she got in my lap
00:32:30
oh and I noticed as long as I sat and
00:32:33
started petting her I could
00:32:37
talk so much
00:32:39
easier it was
00:32:42
phenomenal so phenomenal that as soon as
00:32:44
she returned home Darlene had to tell
00:32:47
her
00:32:48
neurologist he's like yeah I I know
00:32:52
about dogs I know how they can help
00:32:55
there's been lots of studies done
00:32:58
so he wrote a written prescription for a
00:33:04
dog so on doctor's orders Darlene
00:33:07
adopted a snower of her
00:33:09
own come on come on boy the bond between
00:33:14
Darlene and Shadow quickly grew and
00:33:17
Darlene's speech
00:33:19
improved we don't fully understand why
00:33:22
dogs um have such an effect on people
00:33:26
but in Darlene's case uh she felt very
00:33:30
calmed by the dog perhaps you know
00:33:33
paying attention to the animal petting
00:33:35
and the sensory effects of that could be
00:33:38
actually just putting her more into a
00:33:40
meditative
00:33:43
trance soon after adopting Shadow
00:33:46
Darlene learned what an extraordinary
00:33:48
animal he really
00:33:50
was one afternoon Darlene lay down for a
00:33:54
nap and quickly dozed off but Shadow was
00:33:57
alarmed by something and would not allow
00:33:59
her to
00:34:02
sleep he starts pwing at me he wouldn't
00:34:05
leave me alone I sat up in the room just
00:34:11
spun uncertain why Shadow was so upset
00:34:15
Darlene checked the glucose level of her
00:34:17
blood it was dangerously low if a
00:34:20
diabetic's blood sugar level drops too
00:34:22
far it can trigger unconsciousness or
00:34:26
even a coma Shadow has helped Darlene in
00:34:30
in many different ways not only in her
00:34:33
safety as far as being able to detect
00:34:35
the low blood sugar but also just in her
00:34:38
General Life Darlene now is able to walk
00:34:40
without a cane she's able to function
00:34:43
and do the things that she wants to do
00:34:45
on a daily basis Darlene worm and Nancy
00:34:49
best have no doubt that they are alive
00:34:52
because of the mysterious Powers that's
00:34:54
right of their dogs you helped mommy oh
00:34:57
the ability of these dogs to detect a
00:34:59
seizure or detect cancer it's probably
00:35:01
equal parts their incredible sense of
00:35:04
smell their incredible ability to read
00:35:06
body language and then kind of what I
00:35:09
call not just a six sense but a six
00:35:11
sense and that's that ability to know
00:35:13
when something's just not qu quite right
00:35:16
and then the ability to draw near to
00:35:17
help them we shouldn't be so amazed that
00:35:21
pets are able to do this we should be
00:35:23
amazed on the amount that we don't know
00:35:25
that they're able to do
00:35:29
[Music]
00:35:30
next Carla Downing needs your help to
00:35:33
find a woman she has met only once in
00:35:35
her
00:35:36
life her
00:35:38
[Music]
00:35:46
mother Alexandria
00:35:50
Virginia shortly after their mother died
00:35:53
16-year-old Carla Downing and her
00:35:55
younger brother went to live with her
00:35:58
grandparents their father was in the
00:36:00
Army stationed
00:36:02
overseas shortly after my mother's
00:36:04
funeral a woman came to uh my
00:36:06
grandmother's house where I was
00:36:08
living yeah at that time I was 16 I had
00:36:11
a little bit of money in my pocket my
00:36:12
grandmother was going to turn me loose
00:36:14
that day to go do some
00:36:16
shopping
00:36:17
$20 I want you to get me a quart of milk
00:36:19
and you can use the rest for a dress or
00:36:21
anything else you thank you you're
00:36:23
welcome Carla oh Carla this is Mary Mary
00:36:26
was a friend of your mom's in high
00:36:28
school
00:36:29
hi you look very familiar I saw you when
00:36:33
you were just a little
00:36:35
baby and I do remember thinking well
00:36:38
gosh this woman needs to sit down you
00:36:40
know she just look kind of I know shook
00:36:42
up or something and you know I just kind
00:36:44
of assumed that it was over my mother's
00:36:47
[Music]
00:36:50
death Carla didn't know that she was
00:36:52
adopted so she had no way of knowing
00:36:55
that she had just been face to face with
00:36:57
her own birth
00:37:01
mother the whole time I was growing up I
00:37:03
always knew that you know there was just
00:37:05
something not right mainly because of
00:37:07
the difference between my brother and
00:37:09
I he had blue eyes and blonde hair and
00:37:13
it was Curly and you know I had straight
00:37:16
dark hair dark eyes Olive complexion and
00:37:19
it was just obvious to me even that we
00:37:22
just weren't
00:37:24
alike Carla's family didn't reveal The
00:37:27
Secret of her birth even after her
00:37:30
mother's death oh bye-bye it wasn't
00:37:34
until her father died that Carla would
00:37:36
get the first clues about her true
00:37:39
origin now
00:37:42
Carla this belonged to your dad and he
00:37:45
wanted you to have it all his military
00:37:48
papers are in here and a few more when I
00:37:51
got the briefcase I just wanted to go
00:37:54
over each and every paper you know and
00:37:57
remember all of the different places
00:37:58
that we live together and that sort of
00:38:00
thing and in the back of my mind I knew
00:38:02
there was something I was looking for I
00:38:04
just knew there was something in
00:38:06
there Carla's suspicions about being
00:38:09
different were finally explained her
00:38:12
mother Mildred had suffered a series of
00:38:15
miscarriages and then she met a woman
00:38:18
named Mary who was pregnant and
00:38:20
unmarried an immigrant who barely knew
00:38:23
any English Mary decided that she
00:38:26
couldn't keep her baby
00:38:28
she agreed to give the infant to Mildred
00:38:31
the two women made a plan to switch
00:38:33
identities at the hospital her name is
00:38:36
mild Graham okay she doesn't speak any
00:38:40
English the plan worked and Mild was
00:38:43
listed on the birth certificate as
00:38:46
Carla's mother the rest of the family
00:38:49
was sworn to
00:38:51
secrecy she's
00:38:54
beautiful beautiful may I hold her
00:38:59
it's my
00:39:00
thinking that this must have really been
00:39:02
hard on Mary cuz you know if that time
00:39:04
she felt like she could not have a child
00:39:07
for whatever reason I mean she was
00:39:09
concerned enough that she went to this
00:39:12
extreme with my mother to see that I was
00:39:15
in a good
00:39:19
family I just have this need to find
00:39:21
Mary I want to be in the same room with
00:39:23
someone I
00:39:24
resemble uh I I want my mother about
00:39:27
this I want somebody that I've been
00:39:29
looking for for a long
00:39:32
time and I just hope she's still here I
00:39:35
hope she's got a TV and she's still
00:39:38
alive oh Carla this is Mary Mary was a
00:39:41
friend of your mom's in high school
00:39:44
hi you look very
00:39:46
familiar you know I can remember what
00:39:48
she wore where she sat what I was doing
00:39:51
at the time what I had on and I really
00:39:55
wished I would have paid more attention
00:39:57
at that

00:40:14
also Overjoyed to discover that she had
00:40:17
two half
00:40:21

00:40:24
Tennessee to Maryland where she was
00:40:26

00:40:31
mother you know I see her come I knew it
00:40:35
was hurt I couldn't believe it and all I
00:40:39
could say was call oh
00:40:41
call and I ran out to door and she ran
00:40:44
almost fell out the car I think and
00:40:47
uh we couldn't do nothing else but hold
00:40:50
each other and
00:40:54
cry when I saw her for the first time I
00:40:57
just can't describe that feeling it's uh
00:41:00

00:41:03

life this is your grandfather and your
00:41:15
grandmother and this is your grandfather
00:41:17
and grandmother when they got married
00:41:20
it's like a miracle I couldn't believe
00:41:22
it I could I couldn't believe it for the
00:41:24
longest time I say this this is not
00:41:26
happening to us it only happens to other
00:41:28
people that they find somebody they're
00:41:30
looking for not us but yet it happened
00:41:32
to
00:41:33
us when I found out that my mom was
00:41:36
alive and healthy and okay that was just
00:41:41
the best news in the world but then the
00:41:44
extra bonus was I have two sisters and a
00:41:48
nephew so it's uh it's a happy ending
00:41:52
