Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 7, Episode 13

March 09, 2017 / 42:51

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the murder of Ethel Kid in Virginia, the mysterious disappearance of Judith Heims, a supposed miracle at a Pennsylvania church, and the search for Bonnie Potter's half-sister.

The investigation into Ethel Kid's murder reveals that she was found bound to a tree after disappearing for over a week. Detective Robin Talton discusses the evidence, including a road atlas and a list of items that suggest a calculated crime. Edward Wayne Beverly was later convicted for her murder.

Judith Heims, a medical technician, vanished after seeking an illegal abortion in Florida. Her case remained cold for 25 years until mysterious phone calls suggested she might still be alive. The investigation faced challenges, including a fraudulent doctor who disappeared.

In Ambridge, Pennsylvania, a crucifix at Holy Trinity Church reportedly displayed a miracle when its eyes appeared to close during a Good Friday service. The church's bishop investigated but found no convincing evidence of a miracle.

Lastly, Bonnie Potter and her twin sister search for their half-sister, the daughter of their father Oscar Norton, who had a secret interracial relationship during World War II. They hope to connect with her despite the challenges posed by lost military records.

TL;DR

This episode features Ethel Kid's murder, Judith Heims' disappearance, a church miracle, and Bonnie Potter's search for her half-sister.

burhill Virginia is less than 70 M from
00:01:39
Washington DC but it's like a different
00:01:42
world the community consists of little
00:01:45
more than a post office and a few homes
00:01:48
to Ethel kid and her husband Gilbert it
00:01:51
seemed like the perfect escape from the
00:01:53
big city they bought a piece of land and
00:01:56
began building a retirement home the
00:02:00
move was a dream come true for Ethel her
00:02:03
children and grandchildren lived in the
00:02:05
area and much of her life centered
00:02:08
around her
00:02:10
family she was a good person she was
00:02:13
liked by
00:02:14
everybody she liked to cook she lik to
00:02:18
have cookouts and picnics
00:02:21
and she just enjoyed
00:02:25
life one Wednesday after visiting her
00:02:27
daughter who lived nearby was seen
00:02:30
checking her mailbox around 2:00
00:02:38
p.m. Thursday the next morning my wife
00:02:42
called her mother about 7:30 and the
00:02:44
answer machine answered and she said
00:02:47
that's funny mom must have left early
00:02:49
either she's on her way here to have a
00:02:50
cup of
00:02:51
coffee but 9:30 I rode by and I saw the
00:02:56
car there something hit me that
00:02:59
something wrong if she didn't answer the
00:03:04
phone I saw this book and I saw that it
00:03:08
was a an atlas a map and I just picked
00:03:12
it up and carried it with me I thought
00:03:13
maybe e may have dropped
00:03:17
it when I open the door that's when my
00:03:21
heart come up in my throat Al I knew
00:03:24
something was wrong she would never
00:03:26
leave the door unlocked she always had
00:03:28
the door locked even during the day
00:03:31
Ethel are you
00:03:33
here but there was no sign of Ethel and
00:03:36
there was no sign of a burglary or Foul
00:03:38
Play everything in the house was in its
00:03:41
place it was as if Ethel had been there
00:03:44
one moment and then simply vanished to
00:03:47
the
00:03:49
next the police mobilized a large Task
00:03:52
Force officers fann out from methyl's
00:03:54
home and searched the woods and Fields
00:03:57
acre by acre they found no sign of Ethel
00:04:02
[Music]
00:04:04
kid then 8 Days Later 3 miles from
00:04:08
Ethel's home a hunter Came Upon A
00:04:11
shocking
00:04:15
sight it was Ethel's body bound to a
00:04:18
tree facing a Logging Road less than 50
00:04:21
ft
00:04:24
away investigators determined that Ethel
00:04:27
had been strangled they also found found
00:04:29
evidence of sexual assault and estimated
00:04:32
that she had been dead for about 7
00:04:35
days this area had been searched by land
00:04:39
and air she was definitely not at that
00:04:42
location earlier in the week the Killer
00:04:46
is extremely Brazen to bring a body back
00:04:49
to the area where it was kidnapped from
00:04:52
and place it in a position so it would
00:04:55
be found facing a road just off of a
00:04:59
state road and just off of a Logan Road
00:05:02
um it's even as if he may have been
00:05:05
tonning the police uh saying Catch Me If
00:05:08
You
00:05:10
Can police noted that the body showed no
00:05:13
signs of
00:05:14
decomposition it seemed that Ethel had
00:05:17
been kept in Cold Storage after she was
00:05:20
killed who the medical examiner stated
00:05:23
that in his opinion that she had been
00:05:26
kept in an insect free climate
00:05:29
controlled condition which could mean
00:05:33
Refrigeration uh either stationary or
00:05:36
mobile the authorities thought that the
00:05:38
body could have been kept in a
00:05:39
refrigerated truck or a walk-in
00:05:43
freezer Ethel had been tied up with a
00:05:46
type of drapery cord used in hotels and
00:05:49
hospitals car upholstery fibers were
00:05:51
recovered from her clothes but the
00:05:54
investigation centered on items tucked
00:05:57
inside the road atlas that was found in
00:05:59
Ethel's front
00:06:01
yard these two sheets of paper from a
00:06:04
National Motel chain contain sexually
00:06:07
suggestive
00:06:08
messages however the most chilling
00:06:11
Discovery was a handwritten list of
00:06:14
seven items police suspected that this
00:06:18
was a meticulous blueprint for
00:06:22
murder line to listed clothing and
00:06:24
accessories which may have been used for
00:06:27
a
00:06:28
disguise 3 R ID
00:06:32
ASAP paper trip book authorities were
00:06:36
aware of a book called The Paper trip
00:06:39
which described how a person could
00:06:41
obtain a new identity item four simply
00:06:44
read choose
00:06:46
location item five listed the
00:06:49
abbreviations HC TP and SG the best that
00:06:55
we can come up with would be handcuffs
00:06:59
tape and either surgical gloves or stun
00:07:03
gun this individual is a methodical
00:07:07
cunning individual he is a loner he is a
00:07:11
white male probably between 35 and 45
00:07:14
years
00:07:16
old he has not had successful
00:07:19
relationships with females we have to
00:07:22
assume that this individual does
00:07:25
traveling and stays in motels which
00:07:28
could be considered assistant with an
00:07:30
interstate trucker or a
00:07:35
salesperson Ethel was extremely security
00:07:38
conscious authorities believe that the
00:07:40
as salant may have used the road atlas
00:07:43
to trick her into thinking that he
00:07:45
needed directions H excuse me I'm lost
00:07:49
can you show me where Co pepper is this
00:07:52
was a very cunning devious calculated
00:07:56
murder because of leaving clu
00:08:00
bringing the body back just the way that
00:08:02
he did everything in this case and
00:08:05
hasn't been caught yes it's my opinion
00:08:07
that he will kill again hopefully if he
00:08:10
gets put away for doing this that it
00:08:12
won't be done to anybody
00:08:14
else cuz nobody deserves to be done like
00:08:19
this nobody deserves to die like
00:08:25
this
00:08:27
update investigators are always believed
00:08:30
that their best clue was the road atlas
00:08:32
found in Ethel's yard forensic
00:08:34
technicians lifted fingerprints from
00:08:36
several pieces of paper that were tucked
00:08:39
into the atlas but without a known
00:08:41
suspect the prints are useless but after
00:08:45
watching our broadcast one person
00:08:48
thought that the handwriting looked very
00:08:51
familiar the tipster provided a name
00:08:54
Edward Wayne Beverly he had lived in
00:08:57
burill Virginia just a few miles from
00:09:00
Ethel
00:09:01
kid shortly after her murder he had
00:09:04
suddenly left town Virginia authorities
00:09:08
located Beverly in a Tennessee prison
00:09:11
where he was serving time for armed
00:09:14
robbery we compared fingerprints and
00:09:17
they matched to Mr Bev's prints and on
00:09:20
the victim's body there was evidence
00:09:22
there indicating uh uh sexual contact
00:09:26
and we compared Mr bevy's blood through
00:09:29
DNA testing and that matches up
00:09:32
also I'm convinced that we have the
00:09:34
right guy that did this crime based on
00:09:36
the evidence that's
00:09:39
available Beverly was identified just
00:09:42
months before his scheduled
00:09:45
release he was tried for the rape and
00:09:47
murder of ethal kid found guilty and
00:09:50
given three life
00:09:52
sentences Edward Wayne Beverly died in
00:09:58
prison
00:10:00
when we come back mysterious phone calls
00:10:02
may be Clues to the fate of a young
00:10:04
woman who has been missing for 25
00:10:15
years in the days before abortion was
00:10:18
legal some pregnant women turned to
00:10:20
bogus doctors to perform the procedure
00:10:23
many women died at least one young woman
00:10:26
went in for the operation and simply
00:10:28
disappear
00:10:31
appeared in Coral Gables Florida a
00:10:34
22-year-old medical technician named
00:10:36
Judith heims learned that she was
00:10:39
pregnant here test all right if you'll
00:10:43
just sign your name and address here the
00:10:45
name she gave for her pregnancy test was
00:10:48
a false one B Kenny an indication that
00:10:51
she may have been trying to keep her
00:10:53
condition a
00:10:55
secret Judy never said anything to me
00:10:58
that she might have been pregnant she
00:11:00
never even told me that she went to have
00:11:03
a test a pregnancy test um she called
00:11:08
me I guess the day that she was going to
00:11:10
have the abortion if that is what
00:11:12
happened uh to tell me that she was
00:11:15
going shopping she was leaving work
00:11:17
early and going
00:11:20
shopping that day Judith went to her
00:11:22
bank in with Drew
00:11:24
$300 she told her friends that she was
00:11:27
going to buy a watch police believe that
00:11:29
Judith used the money for an illegal
00:11:35
abortion uh we were able to determine
00:11:37
that she contacted a close friend of
00:11:39
hers who uh helped arrange an abortion
00:11:42
through the suspect uh Dr George haju
00:11:47
and uh through that a date and time and
00:11:49
a price were set for it Judith made the
00:11:51
arrangements to get the uh money the
00:11:54
last time she was seen we feel that she
00:11:55
was on her way to get this
00:11:58
abortion
00:12:00
get plenty of rest you'll be fine in
00:12:03
your huh George haju was a Hungarian
00:12:06
immigrant who posed as a doctor police
00:12:09
say that he operated an illegal abortion
00:12:11
clinic in Coral Gables
00:12:15
Judy having an abortion I don't think
00:12:18
she really had any other choice because
00:12:21
nobody in those days would have a child
00:12:23
and keep it it just wasn't done judie
00:12:26
Judy
00:12:28
Judy
00:12:30
right through here huh a lot of people
00:12:33
have said that what happened to her was
00:12:35
that she died having an abortion Judy
00:12:38
was a lab technician she had a lot of
00:12:41
medical knowledge I find it hard to
00:12:43
believe that she could have died having
00:12:45
an abortion uh I mean surely she would
00:12:48
have known she was intelligent enough to
00:12:50
know to go for help
00:12:52
someplace wherever she had gone that day
00:12:55
Judith heimes never came
00:12:58
home
00:13:01
3 weeks later a rental car registered in
00:13:04
Judith's name was found 650 Mi away in
00:13:08
Atlanta Georgia on the back seat were
00:13:11
traces of
00:13:13
blood unfortunately the car had sat
00:13:16
there for two or 3 days before it was
00:13:18
found and then by the time we were able
00:13:20
to conduct any crime scene on it the car
00:13:22
had been handled by other people other
00:13:24
police agencies and by the time it got
00:13:26
back to D County to be processed
00:13:28
whatever crime seemen resist it was
00:13:29
totally
00:13:31
ruined a local resident had seen a man
00:13:33
in his 30s parking the vehicle he
00:13:36
removed what appeared to be a duffel bag
00:13:38
from the trunk and then left the area
00:13:41
this man has never been
00:13:46
identified 3 months later George haju
00:13:49
was arrested for impersonating a doctor
00:13:52
yes G police are under arrest police
00:13:54
suspected Hau might know about Judith
00:13:56
heim's disappearance however haju jump
00:13:59
Bond and was never seen
00:14:01
[Music]
00:14:03
again shortly after he fled the
00:14:06
investigation into Judith's
00:14:08
disappearance ground to a
00:14:10
halt a quarter of a century past and
00:14:14
then a bizarre series of events caused
00:14:17
the case to be reopened it began with a
00:14:21
routine law enforcement seminar Captain
00:14:24
Chuck Shear of the Coral Gable Police
00:14:27
Department lectured at a poli Police
00:14:29
Academy near Omaha Nebraska when Sher
00:14:32
returned to Florida he received a
00:14:35
mysterious phone
00:14:37
[Music]
00:14:39
call hello hello is this Captain Sher
00:14:42
yes it is what can I do for you the
00:14:45
caller claimed to be the host of a radio
00:14:48
program in Omaha he said that he had
00:14:51
received a phone call about The
00:14:53
Disappearance of Judith
00:14:55
heims but when Captain Shear called the
00:14:58
station the f following day the radio
00:15:00
host said that he had never heard of
00:15:02
Judith heims nor had he called Captain
00:15:05
Shear a woman in well now I'm confused I
00:15:09
don't know what to think why would a
00:15:11
25-year-old case surface all of a sudden
00:15:13
out of Omaha Nebraska when in fact I've
00:15:15
never been to omahoma Nebraska in my
00:15:17
life prior to this time uh and had no
00:15:20
knowledge or anything about the case I
00:15:22
never mentioned the case whatsoever the
00:15:24
whole time we were out there for the
00:15:26
simple reason I really didn't even know
00:15:27
about the case uh to give anybody any
00:15:29
information or
00:15:32
anything good evening coab's Police
00:15:34
Department Captain Shear one moment two
00:15:37
days later sheer received another
00:15:40
strange phone call hello Captain sheer
00:15:43
Judy heims is alive and she lives in
00:15:46
Omaha who is this please Judy HS is
00:15:49
alive and she lives in Omaha who is this
00:15:52
hello who is
00:15:55
this my gut feeling is that something is
00:15:59
going on to bring this case back up 25
00:16:01
years later and it very possibly is that
00:16:04
Judy is in fact living in in the Omaha
00:16:07
area then a story on a heimes Case
00:16:09
appeared in a local newspaper and
00:16:12
Captain Sher received a third mysterious
00:16:15
phone call this one mentioning the
00:16:18
fraudulent doctor george hatu hello
00:16:21
Captain sheer the third phone call that
00:16:24
I received was from a man that
00:16:25
identified himself as an informant for
00:16:27
the FBI yeah would you give me your name
00:16:29
please he refused to give me his name
00:16:32
but he said that he had just spent
00:16:34
several weeks with haju over in Budapest
00:16:37
Hungary and he gave me the phone number
00:16:39
I contacted interpole and interpole
00:16:42
determined that the phone number that he
00:16:44
gave me indeed comes back to the same
00:16:45
name of the suspect at that time the
00:16:47
doctor that supposedly performed the
00:16:50
abortion police couldn't locate George
00:16:53
haju in Hungary but they felt that it
00:16:55
was highly unlikely that he was
00:16:57
responsible for the phone calls Judy
00:17:01
heims is alive and she lives in Omaha
00:17:04
the only real evidence that Judith was
00:17:07
alive came from the mysterious phone
00:17:09
calls if they were telling the truth
00:17:12
then where is Judith Hees today could
00:17:15
Judith herself had made the calls or if
00:17:18
Judith had died during a botched
00:17:20
abortion who was making the calls and
00:17:24
why the only possible scenario that I
00:17:27
can see is that she didn't want the
00:17:29
family to know about the supposed
00:17:30
abortion at the time and she just
00:17:32
disappeared and in fact has been missing
00:17:34
for 25 years not wanting her family to
00:17:36
know about it who I'd like to believe
00:17:40
that she's someplace and that she could
00:17:42
be found or that she'd come back or that
00:17:44
we'd know that she's all
00:17:45
right um I I guess my personal theory is
00:17:49
is it's hard to believe that she that
00:17:50
she would be
00:17:52
dead but I can't understand if she's
00:17:55
alive why she wouldn't contact somebody
00:17:57
after all this time
00:17:59
[Music]
00:18:00
after all there's no more stigmas left
00:18:02
why wouldn't she come
00:18:06
back
00:18:08
update 4 days after our broadcast an
00:18:12
unsigned letter arrived at the Coral
00:18:14
Gables Police Department the typewritten
00:18:16
note said that Judith heimes died from
00:18:19
complications during an illegal abortion
00:18:22
and that her body was dumped in bis Gan
00:18:25
Bay near
00:18:27
Miami Police field that the letter is
00:18:29
legitimate and have no explanation for
00:18:32
the mysterious phone calls from
00:18:35
Nebraska we would like the author of the
00:18:38
letter to come forward and to contact us
00:18:39
at the Carl Gable Police Department we

coming up parishioners in Pennsylvania
00:19:12
believe that they see a miracle in the
00:19:15
eyes of a
00:19:25
crucifix Ambridge Pennsylvania
00:19:30
abandoned steel mills line the banks of
00:19:32
the Ohio River a grim reminder of the
00:19:35
Region's lost Prosperity but many
00:19:38
residents of Ambridge refuse to move out
00:19:41
of town some of these people gather at
00:19:43
the Holy Trinity Church to gain strength
00:19:46
from their Catholic faith and from each
00:19:52
other the congregation is proud of the
00:19:55
beautiful crucifix which has been at the
00:19:57
church since 19
00:19:59
1931 it was refurbished by a local
00:20:02
artist Dominic
00:20:05
Leo I became really deeply involved for
00:20:10
2 weeks with the crucifix it had been
00:20:12
here at this church possibly over 60
00:20:15
years so now it was time to restore and
00:20:18
when I completed everything and finally
00:20:21
got to the face I actually worked on all
00:20:23
of the face and the eyes last of all and
00:20:27
when I got to the eyes and I just
00:20:29
painted them and put the color of the
00:20:31
blue gray into the retina and then I
00:20:33
started to put some accents into the
00:20:35
sockets of the eye to show the the the
00:20:39
the color of
00:20:41
[Music]
00:20:43
death after Dominic finished his work on
00:20:46
the crucifix the church held a special
00:20:48
3-hour mass to celebrate Good
00:20:54
Friday Jim sukovic was the nephew of the
00:20:58
parish priest and that night he was
00:21:00
serving as an altar
00:21:02
boy everything was normal you know we
00:21:05
had our readings and sang the songs and
00:21:07
veneration of the cross I got communion
00:21:10
and I went down on the side of the altar
00:21:12
um just waiting for everyone else to get
00:21:14
done that's when my brother Tom came up
00:21:16
next to me and I was looking up and I
00:21:19
was
00:21:20
praying as Jim looked upward into the
00:21:22
face of Christ he had a stunning
00:21:25
surprise the eyes that were once open
00:21:28
now appeared to be closed I was shocked
00:21:33
I didn't know what to believe at first I
00:21:35
was happy but I was scared at the same
00:21:38
time because you know you figure that
00:21:41
God you know he did this right there
00:21:43
while I was kneeling right there Tom
00:21:46
what and I turned to tell my brother Tom
00:21:49
what just look and he looked up and
00:21:52
verified what I saw his eyes are closed
00:21:56
go to the other side and check maybe the
00:21:58
we thought maybe it was just the lights
00:21:59
or something just to make sure that you
00:22:02
know we just weren't seeing things I had
00:22:04
to go to the other
00:22:06
side I looked up and noticed that the
00:22:08
eyes were still
00:22:10
closed it didn't hit me until we went
00:22:12
into the back and I had time to think
00:22:15
about it for a few minutes and that's
00:22:17
when I I started crying because you know
00:22:20
you don't expect something like that to
00:22:21
happen and you know it was something I
00:22:23
was a part of they were crying and I
00:22:26
asked him what happened and they says
00:22:27
the eyes on the cross are closed so I
00:22:31
went back out with another priest who
00:22:33
was helping me that evening and we
00:22:36
looked and there was a change and I
00:22:39
started look around in church at the
00:22:40
people going out the doors and on the
00:22:43
back was the artist who had refurbished
00:22:46
a cross and I called out his name two or
00:22:48
three times and asked him to come to the
00:22:50
altar area and I just simply said to him
00:22:53
would you look at the cross and tell me
00:22:55
what you
00:22:56
see first when he told I was wondering
00:22:59
what could possibly be wrong you know I
00:23:00
says is it falling
00:23:03
down and the second thing I says it
00:23:05
don't look like it's falling down I says
00:23:07
is it a defect some of the plasters
00:23:10
falling down or something you know and
00:23:12
it wasn't
00:23:14
that and my eyes just went straight up
00:23:16
to the crucifix and I couldn't believe
00:23:19
what I saw because not only were the
00:23:21
eyes closed but there was like all kinds
00:23:23
of Tears underneath it and they were
00:23:24
fleshy like there
00:23:27
were the the eyelids were were moving
00:23:30
and moving like this and all the tears
00:23:33
were in there and it was just like as if
00:23:35
crucifixion had just started again from
00:23:38
2,000 years it looked just like that
00:23:39
they were all on her knees and
00:23:41
everything it was just I could never
00:23:42
forget that never
00:23:46
never Dominic go ahead up you go up
00:23:48
first you know the crucifix better than
00:23:50
anybody the crucifix was suspended 22 ft
00:23:53
in the air so a ladder was brought in to
00:23:56
allow for a closer look do domic was the
00:23:59
first to make the
00:24:02
climb I went up to the tip top of the a
00:24:05
ladder I straddled the ladder the top of
00:24:06
it and I had a very close look at the
00:24:09
eyes the uh the left eye is closed and
00:24:13
the right eye is slightly slightly open
00:24:17
it was just unbelievable what I saw this
00:24:19
eye here this eye here was close
00:24:22
completely except for a little sliver of
00:24:25
gray but this eye here was open slightly
00:24:29
and you could just see the bottom the
00:24:31
bottom of the retina and this is what
00:24:33
really did it because when I seen that I
00:24:35
it looked like it was burned that it had
00:24:37
been burned from energy of some
00:24:40
sort another parishioner who had to see
00:24:42
for himself was Pennsylvania state
00:24:45
trooper Chris
00:24:47
Marion I wanted to make sure nobody had
00:24:50
tampered with it and I got real close
00:24:52
like a three-year-old would look into
00:24:53
its father's face and as I looked at it
00:24:56
I realized there's no way it was too
00:24:58
high I I knew no one could have tampered
00:25:00
with it and it was fine and I felt good
00:25:01
about it I've been trained to look at
00:25:04
things a little differently than Norm
00:25:06
the normal I just like I knew the
00:25:08
crucifix a lot better than
00:25:10
everybody this wasn't some hoax this
00:25:12
wasn't a bunch of people just making
00:25:13
this up and everything had happened here
00:25:16
it was for a reason and was definitely
00:25:18
the most religious experience that I've
00:25:19
ever heard of in my
00:25:23
lifetime Sue Tula was another member of
00:25:26
the church familiar with the cross
00:25:29
the cross used to be in an Al Cove area
00:25:33
where anyone could come and light the
00:25:35
big candles and I've done that lots of
00:25:39
times and anybody that has ever lit a
00:25:41
candle when you look up Jesus is looking
00:25:44
at you I remember the eyes were opened
00:25:49
very clearly the eyeballs the white the
00:25:52
bluish gray he was alive Christ dying on
00:25:58
the cross and his eyes were still
00:26:01
opened and that on Good Friday they
00:26:06
closed before church officials will
00:26:08
pronounce a miracle authentic they will
00:26:11
thoroughly investigate every aspect of
00:26:13
the event in this case the bishop of
00:26:16
Pittsburgh was in charge of reviewing
00:26:19
the mysterious crucifix in Holy Trinity
00:26:23
Church there is always value when people
00:26:26
return to their faith but you would want
00:26:28
them to return for the right reasons for
00:26:31
what if they found out later that there
00:26:34
was some deception here or some defraud
00:26:37
that could be very harmful to their
00:26:39
faith and that's what the church is
00:26:41
always concerned about and in an invest
00:26:43
in investigation like this that we are
00:26:46
very objective we are very careful
00:26:49
because of the harm that can come to
00:26:52
Faith since that Good Friday Ambridge
00:26:55
has been visited by thousands of people
00:26:57
who wanted to see the crucifix for
00:27:00
themselves but what really happened in
00:27:02
the Holy Trinity Church was it a miracle
00:27:06
or
00:27:08
hallucination at times I sit here I
00:27:10
wonder if you know is this of God is
00:27:13
this of something evil but I know the
00:27:15
people who are coming here were praying
00:27:17
they come from all over the place and
00:27:18
when they leave they have peace so there
00:27:21
to me this is all
00:27:26
positive The Bishop's Commission
00:27:28
reviewed videotape and photographs
00:27:30
showing the crucifix before and after
00:27:33
the alleged Miracle of Good Friday its
00:27:37
conclusion there was no convincing
00:27:39
evidence that a miracle properly defined
00:27:42
occurred at Holy Trinity
00:27:45
Church this decision meant that the
00:27:47
Vatican will take no further action on
00:27:50
the
00:27:52
case but to many people in Ambridge
00:27:55
Pennsylvania this will always be one
00:27:57
miror
00:27:59
that cannot be dismissed I think my
00:28:02
little nephew summed it up best for me
00:28:04
he said to me Uncle Chris I know what
00:28:05
happened he's 5 years old and I said
00:28:07
what happened he said well God closed
00:28:09
his eyes so everybody else would open
00:28:11
[Music]
00:28:15
theirs next a remarkable detective with
00:28:18
more than 400 cold cases solved maybe
00:28:22
you can help her find the killer who has
00:28:25
stayed just out of her reach
00:28:37
Houston Texas 8:00 a.m. 64-year-old Opel
00:28:41
Zacharias leaves her home for
00:28:45
work she has no idea that two men are
00:28:49
lying in weight in her
00:28:56
garage who are you take it easy lady
00:28:58
what do you
00:29:00
want yes give us
00:29:03
a give us a p their plan may have been
00:29:07
to Simply Rob her but there was a
00:29:13
struggle opal Zacharias died at the
00:29:16
scene and authorities could not identify
00:29:18
either suspect The Killing remained
00:29:21
unsolved for over a decade and then it
00:29:23
was assigned to one of the most
00:29:25
successful c-case investigators in in
00:29:29
America her name is Robin
00:29:32
Talton over the years she's repeatedly
00:29:36
proven herself with amazing
00:29:39
results detective tton found her career
00:29:43
by accident literally she and her
00:29:46
partner were closing in on a wanted
00:29:48
felon at a Texas machine
00:29:51
shop we were told he had escaped three
00:29:54
different times so he was a known rabbit
00:29:57
and we fig figured that he would run
00:29:58
from us the manager there was very
00:30:02
Cooperative he he actually agreed to
00:30:04
point the guy
00:30:07
out detective Toton here's County you're
00:30:09
under ARR let him go I got
00:30:16
him the detective that was with me kept
00:30:19
after the defendant and he did get him
00:30:22
and I did not want this crook to know
00:30:24
that I was
00:30:26
hurt
00:30:30
we walked it down to where the unit
00:30:35
was are you okay yeah man I'm hurt I'm
00:30:39
hurt bad can you make it back to the car
00:30:41
yeah detective Talton chipped her left
00:30:44
kneecap and fractured the lower leg in
00:30:46
two
00:30:47
places this arrest would change her
00:30:51
life feeling okay yeah all right while
00:30:55
Talton recovered from her broken leg she
00:30:58
is assigned to the newly created cold
00:31:00
warrant unit what we'd like to do is get
00:31:04
you to working on a computer and see if
00:31:07
you can find some new sources of
00:31:08
information where we can find these guys
00:31:11
the unit was set up to trace and
00:31:12
apprehend Harris County's Most Wanted
00:31:15
felons many of these criminals had been
00:31:17
on the lamb for more than a decade hey
00:31:21
I'm in I'm in okay can we start tomorrow
00:31:23
we can do that
00:31:25
okay after 10 years working the street
00:31:28
detective Talton found herself armed
00:31:30
with faded warrants and outdated
00:31:33
information but she proved to have a
00:31:36
talent for tracking down
00:31:38
fugitives the C- warrant unit is a
00:31:41
little bit deceptive it's not a a band
00:31:44
of of detectives it's one detective
00:31:46
Robin Talton and U after she does her
00:31:49
research we have about an 80% rate of
00:31:53
arrest by the time I get the warrant
00:31:55
it's old enough that I feel like these
00:31:58
guys have settled down and they think
00:32:00
they're
00:32:02
safe sometimes I start with just a name
00:32:04
an age range and an old Landress and I
00:32:08
put together past acquaintances family
00:32:11
members trying to find somebody that
00:32:13
could fit it's like putting the pieces
00:32:16
together to see if it's going to make
00:32:18
sense Jerry yeah sure am it's kind of
00:32:21
like a game of Catch Me If You
00:32:24
Can usually she can detective talton's
00:32:29
work has led to the arrest of more than
00:32:31
400 fugitives but despite her legendary
00:32:34
success Talton is troubled by the cases
00:32:38
that she has not yet cracked cases like
00:32:41
the ruthless killing of opal
00:32:45
Zacharias from what I remember the
00:32:47
gunshot wound apparently entered the
00:32:50
thigh and came out the back of the hip
00:32:52
so the the shot itself was not a fatal
00:32:56
shot but they had her purse and car keys
00:33:00
and ended up stealing the the car and
00:33:02
backing over and that's actually what
00:33:04
killed
00:33:09
her a witness reported seeing one of the
00:33:12
suspects flee the scene by climbing over
00:33:14
a
00:33:18
fence later that day authorities found
00:33:21
opal's abandoned car however it yielded
00:33:24
no clues that would lead to the
00:33:26
killers
00:33:28
a year later a police informant
00:33:30
identified the trigger man as Lance bedg
00:33:35
good he was still at large when Robin
00:33:38
tolton got the case while trying to
00:33:41
locate Lance bedg good I came across
00:33:43
some post office boxes three in fact
00:33:46
that are still being looked at today
00:33:49
what we're assuming is that he's using
00:33:52
three different post offices basically
00:33:54
is a mail drop so he can keep in contact
00:33:58
detective tton discovered the mailboxes
00:34:00
were registered to three of bedg Good's
00:34:03
relatives and paid for by a
00:34:06
fourth but that's as close as she could
00:34:08
get bedg good remains a
00:34:12
fugitive Lance bedg good is 5' 8 in tall
00:34:16
he has tattoos on his arms and legs and
00:34:18
a scar over his left eye he is wanted
00:34:21
for the murder of Opel Zacharias bedg
00:34:24
good should be considered armed and
00:34:27
dangerous
00:34:29
well I'm glad that the investigation
00:34:31
hasn't been
00:34:32
forgotten the sad part is my aunt's life
00:34:35
was taken and she didn't get to see the
00:34:38
the family grow up and mature and that
00:34:42
said if you have any information about

coming up a mysterious phone call lead
00:34:57
two women on a search for a secret half
00:35:01
[Music]
00:35:11
sister Nukem New York was the home of
00:35:14
Oscar Norton for most of his 72 years he
00:35:17
was a well-respected member of the
00:35:19
community and with his wife he raised a
00:35:22
large family no one suspected that for
00:35:25
more than 40 years Oscar had kept a
00:35:29
stunning secret his daughter Bonnie
00:35:31
first learned about it 8 years after he
00:35:37
died hello yes may I please speak to
00:35:41
Oscar Norton oh my goodness my father's
00:35:44
been deceased for 8
00:35:46
years may I ask why you're calling why I
00:35:50
was informed that he's my
00:35:53
father I was taken back by the phone
00:35:56
call because this is something you never
00:35:58
expect in your life and she preceded
00:36:01
with her conversation asking uh if she
00:36:04
could ask a few questions and I said
00:36:06
well sure was his mother name Eleanor no
00:36:11
her name was
00:36:13
Nelly oh as the conversation kept going
00:36:16
on it didn't connect that this was
00:36:19
anything feasible and I said well may I
00:36:21
ask you a question would I be speaking
00:36:23
to a black woman or someone from the
00:36:25
south well yes you are do you know
00:36:28
you're speaking to a white woman well
00:36:30
yes I do and I'm thinking then there's
00:36:33
been a mistake here and uh I said Gee
00:36:36
it's such a beautiful Sunday it's too
00:36:38
bad that um I couldn't have found a half
00:36:41
black sister and then the conversation
00:36:44
you know um
00:36:45
ended goodbye Bonnie just assumed that
00:36:49
it was a case of mistaken identity but
00:36:51
she could not get the call out of her
00:36:53
mind she immediately phoned her twin
00:36:56
sister phone call I just got what this
00:37:00
woman called and said I asked Bonnie did
00:37:02
you get her name or phone number or what
00:37:05
part of the country she was from and she
00:37:06
said no she hadn't and then when she
00:37:08
said she was uh of mixed race I thought
00:37:11
no that really can't be possible because
00:37:14
uh where would dad have ever met a woman
00:37:16
of mixed race because we live in the
00:37:17
northern part of New York State and it's
00:37:20
primarily Caucasian and my father was
00:37:23
always very busy raising a family and
00:37:25
where could he have been to meet this
00:37:26
woman
00:37:30
before he was married Oscar had enlisted
00:37:32
in the Army one of his favorite War
00:37:35
Stories was about a motorcycle crash he
00:37:38
had in the summer of
00:37:40
1942 while training at Fort Hood in
00:37:43
Colleen Texas but there was a part of
00:37:46
the story that he kept secret hey you
00:37:48
hear the good news what's that you
00:37:51
getting
00:37:52
up oh I guess that is good news you
00:37:55
don't have to eat this Army hospital
00:37:56
food anymore
00:37:59
hey come
00:38:00
[Music]
00:38:04
here what's what's that I'm going to
00:38:06
miss
00:38:07
you what why don't you let me give you a
00:38:10
call oh I don't think that's such a good
00:38:13
idea no come on please I'll think about
00:38:17
it I have to tell you Oscar and his
00:38:20
former nurse were soon dating you look
00:38:23
so beautiful but interracial
00:38:25
relationships were not tolerated by
00:38:27
local residents at the time looks like
00:38:30
it's some menu excuse me sir I'm the
00:38:33
manager and I'm terribly sorry but this
00:38:35
table is reserved for some other folks
00:38:37
well I had a reservation your name
00:38:41
sir Oscar Norton well we have no
00:38:44
reservation in that name and I'm afraid
00:38:46
it's going to be some time before we
00:38:47
have another table available might I
00:38:50
suggest y'all be more comfortable in an
00:38:53
establishment across town we aren't
00:38:55
going anywhere Oscar it's okay we can go
00:38:57
go to another restaurant
00:39:03
okay your hat
00:39:09
sir take care okay we
00:39:13
will got to go Oscar and his girlfriend
00:39:16
eventually had a
00:39:18
baby they lived together off base for
00:39:21
more than a year but in the fall of
00:39:24
1943 Oscar was transferred overseas he
00:39:27
never saw either of them
00:39:31
again Dad wanted the information to be
00:39:33
given out to all of us ironically the
00:39:37
one family member that my father
00:39:38
conveyed this story to was to a family
00:39:41
member that is is having a difficult
00:39:44
time dealing with his own um Prejudice
00:39:47
he didn't tell the rest of the family
00:39:49
after my father passed away and then
00:39:52
when we got the phone call from the lady
00:39:55
he felt apparently some twinge of
00:39:57
conscience that he should come forward
00:40:00
and tell us was his mother's name
00:40:03
Eleanor no her name was Nelly oh my
00:40:07
goodness when Connie thought back to the
00:40:09
conversation she realized that the woman
00:40:11
referred to as Elanor could have been
00:40:14
her grandmother Nelly and I said Bonnie
00:40:17
Nelly and Nelly are nicknames for elanar
00:40:20
and Bonnie goes oh my God she goes maybe
00:40:22
we had the right
00:40:25
woman I've talked about it several times
00:40:27
s the phone call with family members and
00:40:29
we're just hoping that she's not ill
00:40:32
we're actually hoping her mother's
00:40:34
alive we' we'd like to meet her
00:40:37
mother why don't she let me give you a
00:40:39
call oh I don't think this was a woman
00:40:42
he had feelings for and that was too bad
00:40:46
if someone else couldn't deal with it
00:40:49
you look so
00:40:50
beautiful thank you
00:40:52
Oscar it was an ongoing relationship it
00:40:55
wasn't a army weekend out with the boy's
00:40:58
relationship he stuck with her he stayed
00:41:00
with her he had a child that he didn't
00:41:02
deny with her granted the denial has
00:41:04
been for many years to our family
00:41:08
because he was protecting his children
00:41:10
from Prejudice that Society instills on
00:41:12
all of us there's times when people
00:41:14
still find that kind of uh Prejudice now
00:41:19
but hopefully our family's gotten beyond
00:41:22
that the majority of our family at least
00:41:23
has gotten have gotten beyond
00:41:26
that she's going to be received with
00:41:28
open arms and a whole lot of
00:41:32
love Bonnie Potter and Connie fontain
00:41:35
are still looking for their half sister
00:41:38
they want her to know that they care
00:41:40
about her and hope that she contacts
00:41:42
them
00:41:43
again their sister was born in 1943 in
00:41:47
Colleen
00:41:49
Texas her mother worked at a hospital
00:41:51
near Fort Hood when she met Oscar Norton
00:41:54
oh I don't think that's such a good idea
00:41:56
no come on un fortunately all military
00:41:59
records from that time were destroyed in
00:42:01
a fire if you have any information about
