Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 8, Episode 12

March 09, 2017 / 42:51

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the murder of Perman Gilbert, the case of teacher Frank Montenegro accused of sexual assault, and the mysterious fate of Airman Silven Lazarus during World War II.

Perman Gilbert's body was found in Hamersville, Ohio, leading to speculation about a drug-related killing, a mafia hit, or a crime of passion. His wife, Joanne Gilbert, recalls his last day and the frantic search for him, which ended tragically when his body was discovered with signs of foul play.

Frank Montenegro, a respected teacher in Hayward, California, faces allegations of molestation. Detective Teresa Martinez investigates the claims, which initially seem dubious. However, further evidence leads to Montenegro's arrest after he goes missing, raising concerns about the safety of other children.

The episode also recounts the story of Silven Lazarus, an Airman whose plane crashed in North Africa during World War II. A photograph surfaced years later, suggesting he may have survived and been captured, but conflicting reports leave his fate uncertain.

Each case highlights the complexities of unresolved mysteries and the ongoing search for truth, with appeals for public assistance in solving these cases.

Hamersville
00:01:43
Ohio a teenager is riding his lawnmower
00:01:46
back home from a job when he makes a
00:01:48
shocking
00:01:50
Discovery a man's body nuded and beaten
00:01:53
dumped on the side of the road he is
00:01:56
identified as Perman Gilbert a repair
00:01:59
man who Liv lived just 7 miles from
00:02:01
where the body was
00:02:04
found the murder of Perman Gilbert
00:02:07
shocked everyone in Hamersville he was
00:02:10
easygoing and well-liked but in this
00:02:12
small Ohio Town it wasn't long before
00:02:15
words like drug dealers execution
00:02:18
killing and crime of passion began to be
00:02:22
heard Perman Gilbert was a loving
00:02:24
husband and father of four his passion
00:02:27
was flying his small plane but he made
00:02:30
his living fixing household appliances
00:02:33
like washing machines and
00:02:35
refrigerators during the week Perman
00:02:37
worked for a large company but on
00:02:39
Saturdays he worked for himself and
00:02:41
scheduled his own house
00:02:44
calls when he left that Saturday morning
00:02:47
it was probably
00:02:48
8:30 and he said he didn't want to
00:02:51
go and it just sna bothers me I uh
00:02:55
that's what I remember about him leaving
00:02:57
that
00:02:57
morning Perman service call calls that
00:03:00
Saturday morning took him to Mount Orab
00:03:03
Georgetown and Aberdine Ohio all small
00:03:06
towns within a few miles of his home my
00:03:09
pilot when his work was done Perman
00:03:12
crossed the bridge into mazille Kentucky
00:03:14
he stopped at a market where a woman
00:03:16
named Anne Breeze worked as a
00:03:19
cashier she remembers peron's visit that
00:03:22
day he
00:03:24
disappeared he was always very
00:03:26
neat greeted you you know very friendly
00:03:30
every time you saw him I never saw the
00:03:32
man down or act like he had a care in
00:03:34
the
00:03:35
world when Perman left the market he
00:03:38
walked into the flower shop next door
00:03:41
there was nothing unusual about him he
00:03:43
was just a normal customer he wasn't
00:03:45
nervous or anything when I when I met
00:03:49
him no one knows what happened next
00:03:52
Perman told his wife that he would be
00:03:54
back home around 3:00 that afternoon but
00:03:57
he never showed up
00:04:00
then it got to be dark and he wasn't
00:04:02
here it got to be midnight and I was
00:04:07
scared and I was afraid to go out
00:04:11
even uh I had a small child and I was
00:04:13
afraid to put her in the car and go out
00:04:15
looking and um then I think about 3:00
00:04:19
in the morning I called one of our
00:04:20
friends you know do you have you seen
00:04:23
Perman uh do you know where he's at
00:04:25
anything like that and they
00:04:27
didn't Joanne Gilbert called the police
00:04:30
but they couldn't turn up any leads her
00:04:33
husband's body was found the next
00:04:35
day Perman had been shot twice in the
00:04:38
chest because no cloth fibers were found
00:04:41
into two bullet wounds police believed
00:04:44
that Perman was not wearing a shirt when
00:04:46
he was killed his wallet was missing
00:04:49
along with his clothes and his belt
00:04:52
although Perman clothes were never found
00:04:54
his van was located the next day 22 mi
00:04:58
from the spot where his body
00:05:00
had been
00:05:01
discovered Perman Gilbert's watch was
00:05:04
still hanging on the gear shift lever
00:05:06
his uh tool box was in there parts and
00:05:11
supplies was in place in the
00:05:14
van we did uh do an inspection of the
00:05:17
van and recover fingerprints and hair
00:05:20
samples and at this time we've not uh
00:05:23
been able to match the fingerprints and
00:05:25
hair samples to anyone
00:05:30
the investigation into Perman murder
00:05:32
presented three possible
00:05:35
scenarios I think that that whatever
00:05:37
happened to him had something to do with
00:05:41
drugs Perman often flew his small plane
00:05:44
from a rough Landing Strip on his
00:05:48
farm uh Perman told me that um he had
00:05:52
been approached to fly
00:05:55
drugs how's it going okay what's
00:05:58
happening well we have a little favor
00:06:00
we'd like to do for us we don't mind
00:06:02
it's just a little trip and all we had
00:06:03
to do was to uh take the airplane and
00:06:06
fly it to a certain airport go in have a
00:06:10
cup of coffee come back out and there
00:06:12
would be money laying on the seat or
00:06:14
under the
00:06:15
seat forget it it's good money you guys
00:06:18
don't quit bugging me I'm going to call
00:06:19
these ories and it would have been easy
00:06:21
money but U that's against the law and
00:06:25
it was against everything that we
00:06:26
believed
00:06:28
in the second Theory involves peron's
00:06:31
brother
00:06:33
Vernon 3 months before Perman was killed
00:06:36
Vernon Gilbert had agreed to appear
00:06:38
before a grand jury Vernon planned to
00:06:42
testify in a case against organized
00:06:44
crime it should be about an hour or so
00:06:46
okay about an hour
00:06:49
okay Perman waited in town while his
00:06:52
brother testified he began to suspect he
00:06:56
had been followed that
00:06:57
day I don't know of any person that
00:07:01
might have been following Perman Gilbert
00:07:02
and it was not any of our
00:07:05
Personnel however Perman wife believes
00:07:08
that he may have been the target of a
00:07:10
hired
00:07:12
Killer maybe my husband Knew Too
00:07:15
Much maybe uh Perman was killed to lure
00:07:19
his brother back to the funeral and
00:07:21
because they were after him
00:07:23
really and uh but then his brother
00:07:25
didn't come to the funeral
00:07:29
police also thought that Perman might
00:07:32
have been the victim of a crime of
00:07:34
passion per thanks for coming over right
00:07:36
away the very nature of Perman Gilbert's
00:07:39
home appliance repair business placed
00:07:42
him into many many households alone with
00:07:45
a family
00:07:47
member uh yes I thought it was very
00:07:49
attractive and uh I know other women
00:07:51
were very attracted to him
00:07:53
too I feel that the crime of passion
00:07:55
Theory doesn't hold up because uh that's
00:07:59
supposed to be something that's very
00:08:01
Swift and they U beat around on him like
00:08:04
someone was trying to get information
00:08:06
out of him or
00:08:08
something what we need now is for
00:08:10
someone to come forward and help us
00:08:13
Trace Perman Gilbert from that flower
00:08:15
shop anyone that has seen him around the
00:08:19
flower shop or in the parking lot with
00:08:22
his cream and brown vanand at that time
00:08:25
or later in the day we'd like to hear
00:08:27
from
00:08:29
I feel like there are people out there
00:08:30
in the community that know what happened
00:08:32
to my father and for fear of their own
00:08:35
lives or other people they're afraid to
00:08:37
speak up I wish that they would come
00:08:39
forward and fill in those bits and
00:08:41
pieces for us to help us find out what
00:08:43
happened to my
00:08:45
father a reward of $20,000 is being
00:08:49
offered in this case if you have any

next a school teacher and Local Hero is
00:09:04
wanted by police for sexually assaulting
00:09:07
his
00:09:18
students Hayward
00:09:20
[Music]
00:09:21
California by any measure Frank
00:09:24
Montenegro was a hero both of his
00:09:27
parents died suddenly when he was 20
00:09:29
before leaving behind Frank and five
00:09:31
siblings who were all under the age of
00:09:34
18 frank immediately gave up his
00:09:38
Carefree life in San Diego and moved
00:09:40
back to Hayward to raise his orphaned
00:09:42
brothers and sisters with that because
00:09:44
in the first room on the left he
00:09:46
basically was kind of like an angel that
00:09:48
came in there and said you know it's
00:09:49
going to be all right you'll stay
00:09:51
together and and you don't have to worry
00:09:54
about being different places and you
00:09:57
know not being taken care
00:10:01
of it wasn't long before the story of
00:10:03
Frank's sacrifice became national news
00:10:07
did a good job on that book report today
00:10:09
to support his family Frank taught
00:10:12
special education at the local
00:10:14
elementary school good morning gentlemen
00:10:16
known affectionately as Mr Monty Frank
00:10:19
Montenegro was admired and trusted by
00:10:21
virtually
00:10:24
everyone then a mother of a boy in
00:10:26
mono's class made a strange Discovery I
00:10:31
noticed in his clothes a new pair of
00:10:34
underwear
00:10:36
Billy who are these the're mine and I
00:10:40
asked him where did you get these and he
00:10:42
said my teacher Mr Monty bought them for
00:10:45
me I thought that was strange why would
00:10:48
a teacher at school be buying a student
00:10:52
um underwear just because I couldn't
00:10:55
really come up with a sensible reason
00:10:57
but I just kind of kept it in the back
00:10:59
of my head and a year after this had
00:11:02
happened my son said um he goes I forgot
00:11:05
to tell you something and I go what and
00:11:07
he goes remember my teacher Mr Monty the
00:11:10
one that bought me those underwear and
00:11:11
stuff and I said yeah what about him he
00:11:15
said
00:11:16
well he raped
00:11:20
me Frank Montenegro seemed to car deeply
00:11:24
about children so police were faced with
00:11:26
a troubling dilemma was Montenegro the
00:11:29
standing citizen that he appeared to be
00:11:31
or did he Prey Upon innocent
00:11:35
children morning
00:11:37
messages the complaint against
00:11:39
Montenegro landed on the desk of
00:11:41
detective Teresa Martinez she had joined
00:11:44
the Freemont Police Department at the
00:11:46
age of 22 and 3 years later was a
00:11:49
detective assigned to the sexual assault
00:11:53
unit Frank Montenegro was seen as this
00:11:56
huge icon in the community and you can't
00:11:59
ruin somebody's career because one child
00:12:02
says it happened and you can't go into
00:12:05
court and convict a guy for child molas
00:12:08
or sexual assault when there's nothing
00:12:10
to cooperate it do you know why you're
00:12:12
here today yeah so you know about good
00:12:15
touch and you know about Bad Touch yeah
00:12:18
detective Martinez had enough experience
00:12:20
with children to know that their
00:12:22
accounts are not always accurate so she
00:12:25
had to dig deeper into the boy's story
00:12:28
she brought him to child specialist who
00:12:30
questioned the boy further Martinez
00:12:33
watched the interview on a video monitor
00:12:36
you want to show me on a picture where
00:12:38
he touched
00:12:40
you right here and where do you call
00:12:44
that spot my private
00:12:48
parts what came out of that interview is
00:12:50
the victim said that all the students in
00:12:52
his class had seen what had
00:12:55
occurred when we heard that everybody's
00:12:58
opinion was okay okay we know that's not
00:13:00
true okay I really appreciate despite
00:13:03
her doubts Martinez interviewed all the
00:13:05
children in the boys class they all
00:13:08
denied seeing
00:13:09
anything she decided to interview the
00:13:12
boy again well I talked to the kids and
00:13:16
not one of them said they saw what
00:13:18
happened I want you to tell me the truth
00:13:20
did any of those kids see what
00:13:24
happened this time the boy admitted that
00:13:26
he had lied about the other students
00:13:28
seeing the assault
00:13:29
he said that he was scared during the
00:13:32
first interview and thought his lie
00:13:34
would end the questioning but he
00:13:36
insisted that everything else he said
00:13:39
was true Frank Montenegro had attacked
00:13:42
him you don't have to believe me but he
00:13:45
did it this kid was so believable his
00:13:48
demeanor wasn't one of being untruthful
00:13:51
and you know he just wasn't lying and I
00:13:54
believed him
00:14:00
so this is Mr montenegro's classroom
00:14:02
detective Martinez searched montenegro's
00:14:05
classroom where the victim said the
00:14:06
incident took place she found something
00:14:09
that she didn't expect to find at any
00:14:12
Elementary
00:14:14
School through a nondescript door were
00:14:17
two hidden rooms separating them a
00:14:20
two-way
00:14:22
mirror there should be no reason for a
00:14:24
two-way mirror between those two rooms
00:14:27
I'm thinking why would he need that and
00:14:30
in my mind as an investigator I'm
00:14:32
thinking this guy's probably filming a
00:14:35
this is the computer that I was telling
00:14:37
you about it's pretty nice isn't it the
00:14:39
way the two rooms are set up in the back
00:14:41
if Frank wants to do this with this
00:14:43
child he can shut those doors and even
00:14:46
if somebody walked into the classroom
00:14:48
they wouldn't be able to see what was
00:14:50
going
00:14:51
on when martinus returned the next day
00:14:55
the two-way mirror had been replaced
00:14:57
with a regular pane of glass
00:15:01
fearing that Montenegro might suddenly
00:15:03
have become aware of her investigation
00:15:05
Martinez shifted into high gear she had
00:15:08
a search Warr sworn out for montenegro's
00:15:11
home and when we searched his room we
00:15:14
found gifts for smaller kids and books
00:15:17
about sex with younger kids now we're
00:15:20
starting to get some things that are
00:15:22
going to help me cooperate the profile
00:15:24
of a child molester over here so we can
00:15:26
talk Montenegro wasn't home during the
00:15:29
but a female relative was detective
00:15:32
Martinez says the relative made a
00:15:34
disturbing statement are you here about
00:15:37
the little boy in Frankie's room I don't
00:15:39
know anything about that little boy can
00:15:41
you tell me more like she told me of an
00:15:43
incident involving another victim that
00:15:46
was found in Frank's bedroom naked I
00:15:48
went to the police about 2 weeks ago
00:15:51
after hearing about the possibility of a
00:15:53
second incident Martinez brought
00:15:55
Montenegro in for questioning it's Billy
00:15:58
you're talking about is there any reason
00:16:00
why Billy would say you're the one that
00:16:01
molested him I know Billy he's he's he's
00:16:04
he's a liar he he's always telling
00:16:06
stories you why would he lie about
00:16:07
something like this we talked to him for
00:16:10
close to 4 hours and in that whole time
00:16:13
he never denied that he did anything
00:16:15
that was always you know it couldn't
00:16:17
have been me not no I didn't do it it
00:16:20
was more very passive
00:16:23
very very clear to us that he wasn't
00:16:25
being truthful you're the one that did
00:16:27
this but it was still the word of a
00:16:29
little boy who had already lied against
00:16:31
that of a well-respected teacher for
00:16:34
charges as serious as child abuse it
00:16:37
wasn't enough for an arrest warrant to
00:16:39
seal her case detective Martinez needed
00:16:42
the testimony from a second victim she
00:16:45
discovered that a neighboring Police
00:16:47
Department held an outstanding complaint
00:16:50
against Montenegro involving another boy
00:16:54
fearing that Montenegro might take off
00:16:56
Martinez raced to the school and pull
00:16:59
the boy out of class for an interview so
00:17:01
I'm just going to talk to you about
00:17:02
Frank a little bit okay so why don't we
00:17:03
come out over here to the car his eyes
00:17:05
started tearing up and he looked as if
00:17:08
oh my gosh I am caught I need to talk I
00:17:11
knew that something had happened to that
00:17:13
kid I want you to be real truthful about
00:17:15
what happened detective Martinez said
00:17:17
that after gentle questioning the boy
00:17:20
Finally Revealed the unsettling details
00:17:23
of montenegro's assault the stories he
00:17:26
told me were probably some of the most
00:17:28
horrific stories I'd ever heard and to
00:17:31
even picture in my mind how this guy did
00:17:34
these things to this little boy it made
00:17:36
me
00:17:37
sick am I in trouble no you're not in
00:17:40
trouble at all and it broke my heart to
00:17:43
see this little kid who's a a great
00:17:46
little boy think that he was bad when he
00:17:48
wasn't bad at all Mr Monty Martinez now
00:17:52
had enough testimony to swear out a
00:17:53
warrant for the arrest of Frank
00:17:55
Montenegro but Montenegro was already
00:17:58
gone 6 days after he was interviewed by
00:18:01
police a car rented in his name was
00:18:03
found abandoned More Than a, Miles Away
00:18:07
in laaz Mexico montenegro's whereabouts
00:18:10
are currently unknown but police believe
00:18:13
that he has likely return to the United
00:18:17
States it was hard for me to believe
00:18:19
that he did this I still had the
00:18:22
tendency like everybody else did to look
00:18:24
up to my heart has to go out to these
00:18:28
children
00:18:29
that this has been done to because their
00:18:33
innocence has been taken away from
00:18:36
them I don't think just because he had a
00:18:39
close running with the law that that
00:18:41
would motivate him or Scare him to stop
00:18:44
his
00:18:45
actions that obsession is still with him
00:18:47
wherever he goes and I hate to think
00:18:51
that other kids are going through what
00:18:52
my son went through
00:18:59
update an arrest has been made in this
00:19:02
case here's one of our staff with
00:19:04
details after 14 years on the Run FBI
00:19:08
agents from The bureau's Fugitive task
00:19:10
force acted on a tip from the Los
00:19:12
Angeles Police Department and tracked
00:19:14
Montenegro to Los Angeles about 450 mi
00:19:17
from Hayward after a foot pursuit and
00:19:19
struggle with FBI agents Montenegro Now
00:19:22
52 was taken into custody he faces
00:19:25
multiple counts of child abuse with a
00:19:27
minor
00:19:30
next was Charles Lindberg the first
00:19:32
pilot to fly across the Atlantic well
00:19:35
some say that two French Pilots made it
00:19:47
first Paris France May 21st
00:19:52
1927 Charles Lindberg electrified the
00:19:55
World by being the first pilot to fly
00:19:57
nonstop Ross the Atlantic Ocean from New
00:20:00
York to
00:20:02
Paris few people realized that roughly 2
00:20:05
weeks before Lindberg completed his
00:20:08
historic flight two French Pilots
00:20:11
Charles nungesser and Francois Ki tried
00:20:14
to upstage Lindberg by flying across the
00:20:17
Atlantic their plane was called the
00:20:20
white
00:20:22
bird the white bird took off from an
00:20:24
Airfield near Paris on May 8th 1927 and
00:20:28
headed for New York it was last seen by
00:20:31
escort planes as it crossed the coast of
00:20:33
France and headed out over the vast
00:20:38
Atlantic it was never seen
00:20:41
again most experts assumed the plane
00:20:45
simply crashed that sea then almost 50
00:20:49
years later Jim Reed a local Hunter was
00:20:53
deep in the main Woods when he came
00:20:55
across something strange
00:20:59
I saw something that just didn't look
00:21:01
right I thought it was a boulder at
00:21:02
first and then shortly thereafter I went
00:21:04
up and I probed around and it was a
00:21:06
engine an aircraft
00:21:09
engine I was a mechanic and uh was
00:21:12
definitely not a diesel engine or an
00:21:14
automobile
00:21:16
engine the cooling elements the way it
00:21:19
was built indicated to me it was an
00:21:22
aircraft
00:21:24
engine although Jim was never able to
00:21:27
relocate the engine some believe that he
00:21:30
may have stumbled upon the last remains
00:21:32
of the white bird perhaps he had found
00:21:34
the elusive proof that the French Pilots
00:21:37
actually did cross the Atlantic two
00:21:39
weeks before Charles
00:21:42
Lindberg it's very much like trying to
00:21:45
assemble a jigsaw
00:21:46
puzzle little bit by little bit the
00:21:49
Pieces come together and make a picture
00:21:52
and we have enough of a picture now to
00:21:53
convince us that we're on to the trail
00:21:59
Rick Gillespie and his wife Pat Thrasher
00:22:02
are aircraft archaeologists who have
00:22:04
been searching for the white bird for
00:22:06
years using an infrared scanner they
00:22:09
flew over the main Woods where the
00:22:11
engine had been SED they were looking
00:22:14
for traces of metal that might indicate
00:22:16
the white Bird's crash site but most of
00:22:19
their leads came from talking to
00:22:23
people Rick and Pat interviewed longtime
00:22:25
main residents who claim to have seen or
00:22:28
heard the white bird back in
00:22:32
1927 I was outside and all of a sudden
00:22:36
this plane was overhead you heard the
00:22:39
aircraft I heard the
00:22:41
airplane Harold Vining believes that he
00:22:44
heard the white bird on its final flight
00:22:47
at that time we was all keyed up
00:22:50
listening for
00:22:53
Lindberg due to the fact that this plane
00:22:55
was traveling in the wrong direction it
00:22:58
couldn't have been
00:23:02
Lindberg I out chopping
00:23:05
wood when I heard this plane go
00:23:08
over and I honestly believe that that's
00:23:11
the first plane that I ever heard in my
00:23:14
life that's why it is so outstanding in
00:23:18
my
00:23:20
mind not knowing that it was these
00:23:23
French people trying and make history I
00:23:27
just paid no attention do
00:23:29
it it was real foggy for several days I
00:23:34
remember the day well Maurice Barry's
00:23:37
cousin Anon was fishing when he too
00:23:40
heard a plane fly over and then heard
00:23:43
its engine
00:23:49
stop Anon said that he heard a ripping
00:23:54
cve I believe the man I believe what he
00:23:57
said and and uh I fully
00:24:01
believe that that airplane is down there
00:24:05
somewhere you just haven't stumbled on
00:24:10
it the team searched one of the possible
00:24:13
crash sites where the old-timers said
00:24:16
they heard the plane there they
00:24:18
Unearthed a strange fragment of wood hey
00:24:23
Pat eventually Rick and his team found
00:24:26
23 more fragments of the same strip
00:24:30
together they formed a length of 2 m the
00:24:33
exact width of the white Bird's
00:24:36
Wing we will continue on the project as
00:24:39
long as it seems reasonable to do it
00:24:42
what has kept us going in the past has
00:24:44
been that new information keeps coming
00:24:46
out that corroborates what's come before
00:24:51
and there's very much a feeling of
00:24:52
getting closer and closer closer
00:25:00
since this story aired the search for
00:25:02
the white bird has shifted to the Avalon
00:25:05
Peninsula in newfinland Canada
00:25:08
researchers have found some promising
00:25:09
leads but have yet to come up with the
00:25:11
Smoking Gun the engine from the white
00:25:16
bird coming up a lonely widower finally
00:25:19
meets the perfect woman now he's dead
00:25:23
and she's wanted for murder

00:25:35
Boer City
00:25:37
Louisiana
00:25:39
hello yeah um I'd like to put an ad in
00:25:42
the personals on an ordinary summer day
00:25:45
A Woman calling herself Diana Ray places
00:25:48
an ad in the personal section of a
00:25:50
Louisiana newspaper honest and
00:25:52
hardworking and seeking a compatible
00:25:55
single white male for 45 to
00:26:00
55 to enjoy life
00:26:04
together the woman using the name Diana
00:26:07
Ray certainly wasn't the first person to
00:26:09
lie in a personal ad a bit of
00:26:12
exaggeration a few omissions they're all
00:26:14
part of the game but miss Ray had
00:26:17
something more than romance in mind and
00:26:19
she soon found a
00:26:22
Target Charles Barker was lonely and
00:26:25
distraught he was still grieving the
00:26:27
sudden death of his wife of 10 years she
00:26:31
was killed by a drunk driver it was a
00:26:33
settlement out of court and uh he came
00:26:36
into a lot of money but after she died
00:26:39
it just seemed like he kind of fell
00:26:42
apart um he didn't know what to do with
00:26:44
himself I
00:26:46
think he was depressed but then later on
00:26:50
he it's like he snapped out of it and
00:26:51
wanted to do things go fishing and
00:26:53
travel he bought a Winnebago a
00:26:56
boat I guess that's when when the
00:26:58
loneliness set in you know he didn't
00:27:00
like doing them by
00:27:02
himself come on a casino on the Red
00:27:05
River in Louisiana became Charles
00:27:08
Barker's latest diversion he probably
00:27:11
believed that he met Diana by chance but
00:27:14
given her track record it's likely that
00:27:16
it was all a setup is this seat taken
00:27:20
well it is now isn't it is I just took
00:27:23
it Charles Parker carried pretty large
00:27:26
amounts of cash with him she was would
00:27:28
have almost certainly noticed that
00:27:30
because she'd be looking for those kinds
00:27:32
of things you look like you're doing
00:27:33
pretty good over there and so he would
00:27:35
have become a target for her you know
00:27:38
what I might ask you to help me cuz I'm
00:27:40
not doing too good here well your hand
00:27:42
looks pretty good right now let's see
00:27:44
less than a year after the death of his
00:27:46
wife Charles was swept up in a whirlwind
00:27:49
romance with Diana she moved into his
00:27:52
house just days after they met for the
00:27:55
first time here we are oh it's so
00:27:57
adorable I love love it well Dad told me
00:28:00
he had met a woman in a
00:28:02
casino you know I didn't think anything
00:28:04
of it you know I just I hope he was
00:28:07
happy and I don't want to see him alone
00:28:09
you know I thought maybe she uh would be
00:28:12
a good companion for him and evidently
00:28:15
he was happy with her for a while cuz he
00:28:17
would call me and say he liked her you
00:28:20
going carry me over the thresold well
00:28:22
I'm going to give it one good old try
00:28:24
I'll tell you that much he needed
00:28:26
someone some companionship ship he
00:28:28
didn't like to be
00:28:30
alone so you're looking really good dad
00:28:32
tell me about this one weekend Jennifer
00:28:34
made the 9-hour drive from her Austin
00:28:36
Texas home to meet her father's new
00:28:39
girlfriend hey sugar I'm all out of ammo
00:28:42
oh hun Dan I want you to meet my my
00:28:44
daughter Jennifer oh hi Jennifer Deana
00:28:46
nice to meet you so are you from around
00:28:49
here I'm from all around she was a very
00:28:51
you know a real presentable woman you
00:28:53
know um just no class okay it's nice to
00:28:55
meet you it's nice to meting you she
00:28:57
look like a bar fly you know I was
00:28:59
suspicious of her I knew she she wasn't
00:29:02
right for
00:29:04
him daddy what's going on a short time
00:29:06
later even Charles apparently began to
00:29:09
think the same thing one big old messy
00:29:11
situation here according to his daughter
00:29:13
Cindy Charles admitted he was having
00:29:15
trouble with Diana but refused to
00:29:18
provide any
00:29:19
details next week we'll get together I
00:29:22
promise you and I'll sit down with you
00:29:24
and I'll tell you everything when my dad
00:29:25
called me he just sounded so different
00:29:28
and um he started crying and I've never
00:29:30
you know heard my uh dad cry or anything
00:29:34
I I can help but he told me he called me
00:29:35
in 2 3 days everything would be okay and
00:29:37
let me know what was going
00:29:39
on but that call never came Jennifer
00:29:43
tried to get in touch with her father to
00:29:45
arrange another
00:29:46
visit I'd been trying to phone him for
00:29:49
the whole
00:29:51
week and um no answer and I finally
00:29:55
called my aunt and she said we'll go by
00:29:57
there and check on
00:29:59
Charles sister June and her husband
00:30:02
drove over to see if there was a problem
00:30:05
Charlie
00:30:08
Charlie Jun Stringer and her husband
00:30:11
notice that the front door of the
00:30:13
residence is open so they proceed
00:30:16
further the husband looks in and sees Mr
00:30:20
Barker slumped Over the
00:30:23
Bar Charles had been dead for 5 days
00:30:26
killed by a single gunshot wound to the
00:30:30
head as police worked the crime scene
00:30:33
they made several
00:30:35
observations our detectives found no
00:30:37
sign of a struggle they did not find a
00:30:40
house that had been
00:30:42
ransacked Mr Barker had a 25 caliber
00:30:45
Raven arms pistol that he kept in his
00:30:48
residence there were no prints found on
00:30:51
the gun but the ballistics evidence uh
00:30:55
indicates that that was the weapon that
00:30:57
was used
00:30:59
Mr Barker had a safe that he kept in his
00:31:01
bedroom uh the safe was opened when
00:31:04
investigators
00:31:06
arrived except for a few stocks and
00:31:08
bonds the safe was
00:31:11
empty I know for a fact that my dad
00:31:14
always kept money in there and at that
00:31:17
time I believe he probably had
00:31:20
$45,000 at least and that
00:31:23
safe Charles Barker's Lincoln Town Car
00:31:26
was missing and so was his girlfriend
00:31:28
who authorities soon identified as a con
00:31:31
artist named Hazel head Mr Barker's
00:31:35
vehicle was found the next day after his
00:31:38
body was discovered it was found uh near
00:31:42
the airport inside the car were pieces
00:31:46
of clothing uh that belonged to Hazel
00:31:49
also found in the car was DNA evidence
00:31:52
physical evidence that we believe
00:31:55
definitely links her to the car we
00:31:58
believe she is the one that took the car
00:32:00
from his residence and drove it to that
00:32:02
spot near the
00:32:03
airport a background check on Hazel head
00:32:06
revealed that she'd married as many as
00:32:08
10 times and was known to use more than
00:32:11
a dozen aliases there was also an
00:32:14
outstanding warrant for her arrest in
00:32:16
Lincoln
00:32:17
Nebraska there she had allegedly burned
00:32:20
down her boyfriend's home and then fled
00:32:22
before standing
00:32:24
trial did hazelhead murder Charles bar
00:32:28
and escape with all of his cash had this
00:32:31
been her plan from the very
00:32:33
beginning our investigators theorized
00:32:36
that Mr Barker was probably at the bar
00:32:38
reading the
00:32:40
newspaper Hazel came out of the bedroom
00:32:44
with the gun the 25 caliber he didn't
00:32:47
realize that she was behind
00:32:52
him we believe that Mr Barker probably
00:32:55
never knew what hit him
00:32:58
hazelhead is known to frequent truck
00:33:00
stops often hitching rides from town to
00:33:03
town I heard you say he going to Dallas
00:33:06
she is 5' 2 in and has a scar near her
00:33:10
right eye and a gap in her front teeth
00:33:13
she is wanted for the first-degree
00:33:15
murder of Charles Barker and should be
00:33:17
considered dangerous if you have any
00:33:21
information about this case please log

00:33:31
coming up a family search for a young
00:33:33
Airman lost during World War
00:33:44
I Greenville
00:33:46
Tennessee in the summer of 1924
00:33:49
sharecropper Rufus hle was forced to
00:33:52
make an agonizing
00:33:54
decision his wife had died after giving
00:33:57
birth to twin girls Mary and Martha with
00:34:00
little money and nine other Ms to feed
00:34:03
Rufus was forced to put the twins up for
00:34:09
adoption within a few months Mary and
00:34:12
Martha were adopted by separate families
00:34:15
Rufus never saw his daughters again he
00:34:18
died in 1950 we call him mared later on
00:34:21
I heard that they would not tell us
00:34:24
where they were at until my father died
00:34:28
so shortly after he died we started
00:34:31
looking for the Twins and we found
00:34:35
Mary in September of
00:34:37
1955 shorty and Mary were reunited at
00:34:41
her home in Bluefield West
00:34:43
Virginia that afternoon Mary received a
00:34:47
special surprise Mary I've got some news
00:34:49
for
00:34:50
you you have a twin sister named
00:34:53
Martha really
00:34:56
really I just don't can't explain how I
00:34:58
did feel not knowing that I had a a twin
00:35:02
sister AP part of
00:35:05
me however Martha's whereabouts remained
00:35:09
a
00:35:10
mystery I've often wondered if it's been
00:35:12
good or if Martha's life has been
00:35:16
bad you wonder about them
00:35:18
[Music]
00:35:21
things
00:35:22
update shortly after we broadcast this
00:35:25
story one of our viewers came forward
00:35:28
with information about Mary's twin
00:35:30
sister Martha hle Martha had been raised
00:35:33
by the Dan Jackson Family of Johnson
00:35:36
County Georgia in 1940 she married James
00:35:40
tonis these are their four Sons but
00:35:43
Martha herself passed away weeks before
00:35:46
this story went on the
00:35:49
air I'm glad that that I found her we
00:35:52
won't have to do no more
00:35:55
searching but it's so sad that I
00:35:57
couldn't met her that that I couldn't be
00:35:59
with her just to talk to her just for
00:36:02
just for air or two and tell her that I
00:36:05
Lov
00:36:09
her although Mary Carter never met her
00:36:12
twin sister she did find Martha's
00:36:15
extended family at a Bittersweet reunion
00:36:18
the two families finally came together
00:36:21
as
00:36:25
one as world I raged in Europe an
00:36:29
American B24 took off from Morocco in
00:36:32
North Africa on a non-combat mission for
00:36:35
reasons that have still not been
00:36:37
explained it crashed into a msde the
00:36:40
entire crew was lost among the victims
00:36:43
were three Airmen silven Lazarus Carl
00:36:46
Cobb and Bernard Brady for more than 50
00:36:50
years they have been the center of a
00:36:52
perplexing
00:36:53
mystery 3 months after the crash a
00:36:56
Baltimore News paper ran this photograph
00:36:59
of a German officer interrogating four
00:37:02
American
00:37:03
PS three of them were identified by
00:37:06
their families as Lazarus Cobb and
00:37:11
Brady the winter of 1943 was an anxious
00:37:14
time for the Lazarus family on December
00:37:17
14th they learned that their oldest son
00:37:20
silvin was missing an action 3 weeks
00:37:24
later their worst nightmare became
00:37:26
reality
00:37:30
Dad it's your
00:37:33
brother he's dead at the time sven's
00:37:37
brother Arnold was 17 years old and we
00:37:40
were devastated absolutely devastated I
00:37:44
mean my brother was such a great guy
00:37:47
he's he was loved by everybody very very
00:37:49
outgoing family
00:37:51
oriented and to lose somebody like that
00:37:54
is it's
00:37:56
devastating there's no other word I
00:37:58
could
00:38:00
use according to the official report on
00:38:04
December 8th 1943 silvin and 13 other
00:38:07
men boarded the B24 on the east coast of
00:38:11
Africa the plane was bound for
00:38:13
Casablanca in Morocco it went down in
00:38:16
the rugged Atlas
00:38:19
Mountains the report concluded that
00:38:21
Lazarus Cobb and Brady were all buried
00:38:24
with the rest of the crew in a mass
00:38:26
grave
00:38:28
as the months went by the Lazarus family
00:38:30
tried to cope with the loss of svin and
00:38:33
then on March 17th
00:38:36
1944 the mysterious photograph appeared
00:38:39
in the Baltimore mirror
00:38:42
ana ana their grief turned to confusion
00:38:46
then to Hope prisoners of Germany
00:38:49
captured after their planes were shot
00:38:50
down over the we were shocked uh I mean
00:38:53
there was no question about it that one
00:38:55
of the Airmen was definitely my brother
00:38:58
his eyes his
00:39:01
posture the way he stood at a certain
00:39:04
certain way uh was definitely him
00:39:09
definitely the family began to wonder if
00:39:12
silven had survived but the photo was
00:39:15
confusing the prisoners were supposedly
00:39:18
being interrogated by a Nazi officer in
00:39:21
North Africa but the Germans had been
00:39:23
driven from Morocco 7 months before the
00:39:26
crash
00:39:28
sven's father was convinced that there
00:39:30
was much more to the story he got the
00:39:32
names of the 13 other Airmen killed in
00:39:35
the crash and sent a copy of the photo
00:39:37
to each family Bernard Brady of New York
00:39:40
and Carl Cobb of Cynthiana Kentucky were
00:39:43
identified in the photo by their
00:39:46
families my father wanted more answers
00:39:51
and he uh he wrote back and forth to the
00:39:55
government my father even contacted the
00:39:58
Red Cross trying to get
00:40:01
answers but it was all in
00:40:05
vain the Lazarus family now believes
00:40:08
that sven's plane may have been shot
00:40:10
down during a secret mission behind
00:40:12
German lines in Europe not in Africa
00:40:16
they also believe that some of the
00:40:18
crewmen managed to parachute the safety
00:40:21
only to be taken prisoner by the Nazis
00:40:24
silven Cobb and Brady could have been
00:40:26
photog phed while being interrogated
00:40:29
about their mission the Lazarus family
00:40:32
fears that silven may have been singled
00:40:34
out because of his ethnic
00:40:37
Heritage my theory is the Germans found
00:40:42
out that my brother was
00:40:44
Jewish and I believe that they violated
00:40:47
the
00:40:49
Geneva
00:40:51
Convention by rights he should have been
00:40:54
put into a p camp
00:40:58
but I don't believe that that happened I
00:41:00
I believe that he was put into a
00:41:02
concentration camp
00:41:04
instead although it has been more than
00:41:07
60 years since silven Lazarus was last
00:41:10
seen alive his family continues to
00:41:12
search for Clues to his
00:41:16
fate having seen the
00:41:18
photograph we cannot help but wonder
00:41:22
what really happened to him couldn't
00:41:24
have been killed in a
00:41:26
crash so what happened to him that's
00:41:28
what we want to find
00:41:30

00:41:32
out update shortly after this story
00:41:36
aired a viewer called to report that he
00:41:39
was one of the rescue workers who
00:41:41
responded to the crash of the B24 in the
00:41:43
Atlas Mountains of North Africa he spoke
00:41:47
by telephone to the missing airman's
00:41:49
brother Arnold Lazarus and told him that
00:41:52
the plane had struck the mountain with
00:41:54
such force that no one could have
00:41:56
survived the impact before he passed
00:41:59
away Arnold Lazarus realized that the
00:42:02
man in the photo was not his brother SV
00:42:06
it was in fact a case of mistaken
00:42:09
identity
