Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 4, Episode 9 - Full Episode

May 22, 2019 / 49:53

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers three main cases: the bombing of televangelist Pat Robertson, the wrongful conviction of Patti Stallings, and the murder of Beverly McGowan.

The first segment discusses the 1990 bombing incident involving Pat Robertson, where a package containing a homemade bomb was sent to his office. Security guard Jeepers Scheepers opened the package, resulting in severe injuries. Authorities linked the bombing to previous attacks on other televangelists, raising concerns about the identity of the bomber.

The second segment focuses on Patti Stallings, who was wrongfully convicted of murdering her infant son, Brian. After serving time in prison, new evidence about a rare genetic disorder led to her exoneration and the return of her surviving son, DJ.

The final case details the mysterious disappearance and murder of Beverly McGowan. After placing an ad for a roommate, Beverly was found dead, and investigators struggled to uncover the motive behind her gruesome murder. The case remains unsolved, with questions about the identity of the killer.

This episode highlights the impact of violence, wrongful accusations, and the search for justice in these unsettling stories.

broadcast televangelist Pat Robertson's
00:00:22
outspoken opinions have often made him
00:00:24
the target of criticism but in 1990
00:00:26
Robertson was targeted for violence
00:00:28
delivered through the mail authorities
00:00:31
believe the bomber has struck before and
00:00:34
fear that he will strike again
00:00:35
as a teenager Kathy Williams suffered

years of physical and emotional abuse
00:00:40
inflicted by her stepfather a policeman
00:00:43
when Kathy went to the authorities she
00:00:45
found herself victimized again and
00:00:47
unjustly committed to reform school in
00:00:51
July of 1990 Beverly McGowan at Boca
00:00:54

00:01:00
week later
00:01:01
Beverly's mutilated body was found in a
00:01:03
drainage canal 100 miles away for every

00:02:11
televangelist Pat Robertson's daily
00:02:13
broadcast over CBN the Christian
00:02:16
Broadcasting Network are seen in nearly
00:02:18
a million households nationwide but his
00:02:21
outspoken stance on controversial issues
00:02:23
has often made him the target of hate
00:02:25
mail and death threats of what this does
00:02:28
to society
00:02:30
Robertson's broadcast originated from
00:02:32
his 693 acre headquarters in Virginia
00:02:35
Beach Virginia each day more than 6,000
00:02:39
letters and parcels pour into the CBN
00:02:41
mail room
00:02:42
most of them donations from devoted
00:02:44
viewers
00:02:47
because of the controversy generated by
00:02:49
Robertson's opinions any package which
00:02:51
appears even mildly suspicious has run
00:02:53
through an x-ray machine
00:03:00
on April 27th 1990s a CBN security guard
00:03:05
was called to the mailroom to check a
00:03:07
package address personally to Pat
00:03:09
Robertson
00:03:11
no one else was in the area at the time
00:03:14
[Music]
00:03:22
when I look at the package on the
00:03:24
monitor of the x-ray machine I didn't
00:03:28
see any anything that was that's led me
00:03:31
to believe that it was there was a
00:03:32
problem or it was really suspicious
00:03:46
Jeepers remained on guard and decided to
00:03:49
check the contents of the package he was
00:03:51
baffled by several strips of loose paper
00:03:54
sticking out of the box
00:03:55
[Music]
00:04:01
I was still somewhat skeptical about it
00:04:04
I'm sorry
00:04:05
step away from the box as far as I could
00:04:08
get and took my left hand and extended
00:04:11
it out and grabbed the lid of the box I
00:04:18
was immediately knocked to the floor I
00:04:22
had severe pain in the upper part of my
00:04:27
left leg in my abdomen over to my right
00:04:30
leg I made the determination that this
00:04:34
is it you know it's either lay here and
00:04:36
possibly die or get up and get help and
00:04:39
so that's when I made the determination
00:04:40
to help myself and pick myself off the
00:04:43
floor and try to get to the front of
00:04:45
building
00:04:50
Scheepers is rushed to a nearby hospital
00:04:52
where he underwent emergency surgery to
00:04:55
remove the shrapnel embedded in his leg
00:05:01
I'm very fortunate the trauma room
00:05:04
doctor said if I'd have been holding the
00:05:06
package and I had the same size hole in
00:05:08
my chest that I have in my leg I might
00:05:11
not even made it out of the room itself
00:05:12
so yeah I consider myself very very
00:05:16
fortunate that it wasn't any worse than
00:05:17
it was
00:05:23
[Applause]
00:05:27
postal inspectors and agents for the
00:05:29
Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms
00:05:32
determined that the package contain a
00:05:34
homemade pipe bomb they quickly linked
00:05:37
the bomb to an earlier attack aimed at
00:05:39
another televangelist in Texas
00:05:45
Jesus in 1960 Pastor John Osteen founded
00:05:49
the Lakewood Church in Houston with 8200
00:05:53
seats
00:05:53
Lakewood is one of the largest churches
00:05:55
in America Peter who is this he said to
00:06:00
Jesus thou art the Christ the Son I
00:06:03
cried bird see pastor Osteen uses
00:06:05
television to spread the gospel but
00:06:07
unlike Robertson he does not ask for
00:06:09
donations on the air the Lakewood Church
00:06:15
is a family-run organization Osteen's
00:06:18
wife Jody serves as co pastor and four
00:06:21
of the six children are involved in
00:06:22
church activities amen On January 30th
00:06:27
1993 months before the CBN bombing
00:06:30
Osteen's daughter Lisa arrived in her
00:06:33
office to open the day's mail I noticed
00:06:37
a box and I picked it up and it was very
00:06:40
heavy it's a little unusual I'm
00:06:43
different
00:06:48
I felt like it was safe to open the
00:06:51
package because I I've done a lot of
00:06:53
packages is we've never had any problems
00:06:55
and this looked like an ordinary package
00:06:57
it had a labelled address to my dad
00:07:00
typewritten to my dad and then it had a
00:07:02
return address and you know you don't
00:07:04
you're not really suspicious of things
00:07:06
like that
00:07:13
it was just a cardboard box I had a one
00:07:16
piece of tape on it
00:07:19
[Music]
00:07:28
when I open the package I remember this
00:07:32
great explosion and it shook my body and
00:07:35
I didn't lose consciousness but there
00:07:38
was a time I opened the box when I was
00:07:41
sitting down and really the next thing I
00:07:44
remember is I was standing about five
00:07:46
feet away from my chair and I was very
00:07:50
shaken as if I'd had an electrical shock
00:07:53
I'll never forget that feeling Lisa had
00:07:57
been the victim of a pipe bomb wrapped
00:07:59
in newspaper
00:08:00
she suffered third-degree burns and
00:08:01
lacerations on her right leg and abdomen
00:08:03
she recovered from her injuries and just
00:08:06
four weeks later returned to the pulpit
00:08:11
[Applause]
00:08:12
the box that was used to to mail this
00:08:17
this device was a box used by home home
00:08:22
sales distributors for the distribution
00:08:24
of candles and there was some printed
00:08:27
material on the outside of the box which
00:08:30
had been scratched out with the word
00:08:32
burgundy written on the box we found
00:08:38
that both of these packages were mailed
00:08:40
from small towns near Fayetteville North
00:08:43
Carolina the National Center for the
00:08:49
analysis of violent crimes researched
00:08:52
all the evidence in both the bombing
00:08:54
cases
00:08:55
company her husband they said number one
00:08:58
that this individual responsible for the
00:09:01
bombings had some type of stress or
00:09:04
turmoil in his life at the time of the
00:09:06
bombings secondly they felt that anyone
00:09:10
around during the presence of the bomber
00:09:13
would have known
00:09:14
a difference in this person's behavior
00:09:18
if I could talk to the man that sent the
00:09:21
bomb to me I think I would just say that
00:09:24
I wish you would give yourself up and
00:09:27
receive help because you know I was just
00:09:32
an innocent victim you sent that bomb to
00:09:34
me you hurt me I have scars on my body
00:09:37
you could have killed me and it's not
00:09:41
right for an innocent victim for that to
00:09:44
happen to an innocent victim I would
00:09:48
like to see him caught I don't have any
00:09:50
real tremendous amount of hate or
00:09:52
animosity for him he needs help he's
00:09:56
hurt
00:09:56
several people and now I'd like to see
00:09:59
him taken off the street you know before
00:10:01
he kills somebody or kill somebody these
00:10:05
two composites depict the men who were
00:10:07
seen mailing the bombs the drawings are
00:10:09
made 3 months apart by two different
00:10:11
police artists but authorities are
00:10:13
convinced they portray the same
00:10:14
individual he is described as a neatly
00:10:16
dressed white male with brown hair is
00:10:19
between 28 and 35 years old about 5 feet
00:10:21
11 inches tall with average build
00:10:24
he weighs between 160 and 175 pounds the
00:10:30
bombs are mailed from Bladen burrow and
00:10:31
Elizabethtown North Carolina both the
00:10:34
small towns within 25 miles of
00:10:36
Fayetteville fortunately they've been no
00:10:38
other incidents it's a CBN bombing in
00:10:40
1990 however authorities fear the bomber
00:10:43
may strike again
00:10:44

next a young mother convicted of murder
00:10:55
wins our final appeal
00:11:06
tonight a very special update thanks in
00:11:11
part to our broadcast a young mother
00:11:12
unjustly accused of murdering her child
00:11:15
has been freed
00:11:19
July 9th 1989 st. Louis Missouri
00:11:22
Patti Stallings rushed her critically
00:11:25
ill son to the hospital
00:11:27
Brian Stallings was three months old and
00:11:30
since birth he had suffered from chronic
00:11:31
gastric distress but this day the
00:11:34
diagnosis was shocking Brian had
00:11:37
apparently been poisoned with ethylene
00:11:39
glycol a substance found in antifreeze
00:11:43
just have to ask you a few questions if
00:11:45
you could come in for a moment police
00:11:47
were called as a hospital to interrogate
00:11:50
Ryan's parents and talk to by detectives
00:11:55
they were saying that they knew that
00:11:58
that baby had been poisoned by either me
00:12:00
or my husband and I was just I was
00:12:03
devastated I was blown away I just could
00:12:07
not believe that they could even think I
00:12:09
mean Ryan was my world
00:12:11
[Music]
00:12:14
while the investigation was in progress
00:12:16
Patti and David Stallings contact with
00:12:18
Ryan was restricted to a one-hour visit
00:12:20
each week during the sixth visit Patti
00:12:25
was left alone with Ryan for a short
00:12:26
time
00:12:29
four days later Ryan would suffer
00:12:31
another severe attack of vomiting the
00:12:34
diagnosis again was poisoning after just
00:12:37
72 hours
00:12:38
Ryan Stallings died
00:12:40
[Music]
00:12:43
on September 17th 1989 Patti Stallings
00:12:48
who did not yet know she was pregnant
00:12:49
again
00:12:50
was charged with first-degree murder and
00:12:52
held without bail she was not allowed to
00:12:55
attend her son's field on February 27th
00:13:02
1990 while Patti was in jail awaiting
00:13:04
trial her second son DJ was born when DJ
00:13:10
was two weeks old he began to exhibit
00:13:12
symptoms identical to the ones that had
00:13:14
plagued his brother Ryan this time the
00:13:17
ailment was diagnosed as a rare genetic
00:13:19
disorder methylmalonic acidemia or MMA
00:13:23
his symptoms are often confused with
00:13:25
ethylene glycol poisoning
00:13:29
despite DJ's diagnosis Patti stonings
00:13:32
was convicted and sentenced to life in
00:13:34
prison for the murder of her son Ryan DJ
00:13:37
was placed in the custody of the state
00:13:39
and Patti was allowed to see him only
00:13:41
three times
00:13:44
I've lost one child to MMA my second
00:13:51
child is stricken with him on me it may
00:13:54
not live
00:13:55
he's year old though and there was still
00:13:59
not sure how to treat him I lost my
00:14:03
freedom I've lost everything on the
00:14:13
night two story aired calls from
00:14:15
physicians familiar with MMA poured into
00:14:17
our telecentre patty starlings new
00:14:20
attorneys petitioned the court to grant
00:14:22
her another trial based on the fact that
00:14:24
she had previously received ineffectual
00:14:26
counsel on July 30th 1991 patty
00:14:29
Stallings was granted a new trial and
00:14:31
released from prison
00:14:33
[Music]
00:14:36
after the enzyme mr. is air people were
00:14:38
writing and calling and just want to
00:14:40
know how can we help and I can't think
00:14:43
those people enough because I mean
00:14:45
through all of that wheels started
00:14:49
turning and everything just started
00:14:51
pushing forward really fast
00:14:52
along with rhymes remaining serum the
00:14:56
September 20th 1991 a press conference
00:14:59
was held in st. Louis dr. Pierre Ronaldo
00:15:02
of Yale University revealed the
00:15:04
independent serum tests showed Ryan
00:15:06
Stallings had definitely died of MMA
00:15:10
consequently the prosecuting attorney
00:15:12
dropped all charges against patty
00:15:14
Stallings unfortunately we can't undo
00:15:18
the suffering that the starlings have
00:15:19
endured during this entire ordeal and I
00:15:23
apologize to them both personally and
00:15:26
for the state of Missouri during the
00:15:28
press conference Patti and David heard
00:15:30
for the first time the custody of their
00:15:32
son DJ had been returned to them
00:15:36
[Music]
00:15:40
in October of 1991 just over two years
00:15:44
after his brother's death DJ came home
00:15:47
for the first time
00:15:48
[Music]
00:15:50
just want to make up for the year and a
00:15:52
half that we didn't have him and it's
00:15:55
hard to make up that much time but I'm
00:15:57
doing the best I can
00:16:01
his condition was very scary but we've
00:16:04
checked with so many hard things that
00:16:07
we've just kind of said we'll beat this
00:16:10
too and with that attitude I know that
00:16:13
DJ would do alright and that will do
00:16:15
okay he is a miracle child and we're
00:16:18
lucky to have DJ and we have our whole
00:16:21
life back and it's like we're starting
00:16:23
over
00:16:24
it's undescribable wonderful
00:16:29
[Music]
00:16:35
we have all met people who have made
00:16:38
lasting impressions upon us sometimes
00:16:41
they are total strangers passed through
00:16:43
our lives without ever knowing they have
00:16:44
made a difference in the early 1960s a
00:16:48
young girl named Kathy Williams lived in
00:16:50
a horrifying world of emotional and
00:16:51
physical abuse but when all seemed lost
00:16:54
a man she had never met before and has
00:16:56
never seen since helped change her life
00:16:59
forever July 1961 the streets of Chicago
00:17:08
Southside echo with a carefree laughter
00:17:11
of children but far removed from the
00:17:13
delightful sounds of summer a hidden
00:17:15
crime has been committed one young girl
00:17:20
has been stripped of her innocence the
00:17:23
night before 14 year old Kathy Williams
00:17:25
was forced to participate in a drunken
00:17:27
party and then fell prey to the abusive
00:17:30
sexual advances of her stepfather
00:17:32
Clifford Starks
00:17:35
I woke in the middle of cliff is dead
00:17:39
with Clifford actually laying almost on
00:17:42
top of me he was naked I was totally
00:17:44
naked I remember his hands being all
00:17:46
over my breasts well I knew that that
00:17:49
was wrong and I didn't know what else
00:17:51
had happened I couldn't remember
00:17:52
and so that scared me too so and that's
00:17:54
why I took off I wrote the letter and I
00:17:57
thought that would be the end of it in a
00:17:59
child's mind I'm thinking well you know
00:18:00
this would take care of everything I can
00:18:02
get out of here I'll be saved the events
00:18:05
of the previous evening were the
00:18:06
culmination of months of horror for
00:18:08
Kathy Williams
00:18:09
she felt she had no choice but to run
00:18:12
away but with nowhere to go Kathy was
00:18:18
soon picked up off the streets by her
00:18:20
stepfather she was beaten and held
00:18:23
prisoner in a relative's apartment
00:18:24
locked into a small room for more than a
00:18:27
week Kathy Williams was trapped in a
00:18:33
horrible for all too familiar tragedy
00:18:36
compounding her dilemma was the fact
00:18:38
that her stepfather was a respected
00:18:40
detective in the Chicago Police
00:18:42
Department
00:18:43
in desperation Kathy reluctantly went to
00:18:46
the police what do you live Cathy
00:18:54
devised an elaborate scheme in which she
00:18:56
pretended to have amnesia if all what is
00:18:59
planned her stepfather would never learn
00:19:01
of her visit and Cathy would be sent
00:19:03
somewhere else to live so we just have
00:19:07
to put her down as a Jane Doe and I'm
00:19:09
thinking God good they'll put take me
00:19:11
someplace because anything was better
00:19:13
than going back to that hellhole that I
00:19:15
had run away from are you having
00:19:17
problems at home well if you are having
00:19:20
problems at home running away is not
00:19:22
gonna solve them do you have brothers
00:19:25
and sisters
00:19:27
if you have brothers and sisters and you
00:19:30
are having problems they could be going
00:19:32
through the same thing you're going
00:19:33
through so he'll finally Cathy decided
00:19:36
to tell the truth and hope for the best
00:19:40
my stepfather has been molesting me he
00:19:46
she said you poor child she still will
00:19:48
do anything and everything we can to
00:19:50
help you
00:19:51
everybody was sympathetic but for some
00:19:54
reason I felt like this was the police
00:19:56
maybe they really could help me and I
00:19:58
felt that I had two younger sisters
00:20:00
there that they didn't need to be there
00:20:02
and the same thing could happen to him
00:20:04
because I hadn't thought about that
00:20:07
Kathy's optimism was quickly shattered
00:20:09
just as she had feared her stepfather
00:20:12
was notified sergeant detective covered
00:20:16
Starks what brings you to the 7th come
00:20:19
to pick up my daughter your daughter
00:20:21
what's she doing here Kathy Williams get
00:20:25
her down here once Clifford came down to
00:20:29
the police station and flipped out his
00:20:31
badge that was the end of me Kathy
00:20:34
Williams she's detective Clifford
00:20:36
Stark's daughter and he's come to take
00:20:38
her home
00:20:38
he became omnipotent and I became a pile
00:20:42
of nothing doesn't want to go home with
00:20:44
him she doesn't want to go home with me
00:20:46
and lock her up I knew if I went home
00:20:50
with him I was dead meat lock her up and
00:20:52
I refused and upon refusal to go home
00:20:55
with them I was then shackled with
00:20:57
handcuffs and thrown into the back of a
00:20:59
paddy wagon like a common criminal and
00:21:00
taken off to the county jail
00:21:04
Kathy says that she was labeled
00:21:06
incorrigible according to existing
00:21:08
Illinois state law she spent one night
00:21:10
in jail and was then remanded to a city
00:21:13
home for delinquent minors crazy I'm so
00:21:19
scared I don't once later Kathy appeared
00:21:22
at a hearing and juveniles killed many
00:21:25
of her closest friends from the
00:21:26
neighborhood gathered prepared to
00:21:28
testify on her behalf I'm sorry this is
00:21:35
a juvenile court proceeding and is
00:21:36
limited to the immediate members of the
00:21:38
family you'll have to wait out here
00:21:44
Kathy Williams yes sir your honor please
00:21:46
take a seat
00:21:47
Kathy remembers that is a proceedings
00:21:49
began it was discovered that her case
00:21:51
file had conveniently disappeared
00:21:53
counselor the file contained affidavits
00:21:55
supporting her allegations of sexual
00:21:57
abuse once again it seemed that Clifford
00:22:00
Starks had stacked the deck against his
00:22:02
stepdaughter we seem to have a blank
00:22:04
file here your honor this is detective
00:22:06
Sergeant stars
00:22:07
this is Kathy's father the judge's
00:22:10
decision was based solely upon the
00:22:12
testimony of Clifford Starks that day
00:22:14
and that moment in the courtroom she
00:22:16
stays out late at night if she comes
00:22:18
home at all she runs with a bad group of
00:22:20
kids Clifford told them they had had all
00:22:23
kinds of trouble with me out that I was
00:22:25
quote-unquote incorrigible runaway
00:22:28
teenager prostitute with in fact said I
00:22:31
was into drugs miss Williams please rise
00:22:36
it's the order of this court that you be
00:22:38
confined to the Illinois state training
00:22:41
school for girls at Geneva until here
00:22:43
18th birthday my feelings were it was
00:22:47
the end of the world I was
00:22:50
and I didn't know I could feel that kind
00:22:52
of pain of it that much hurt each time
00:22:54
you think it's bad you just think you
00:22:56
just couldn't get worse but it gets
00:22:58
worse and when you look over at your
00:23:00
family and friends it's like now it's
00:23:03
this proven that I'm wrong you know
00:23:05
obviously this wouldn't happen if I
00:23:07
wasn't bad and maybe I did deserve this
00:23:10

00:23:15
Kathy was placed in the custody of a
00:23:17
Cook County deputy sheriff to be
00:23:19
transported to reform school she had no
00:23:21
idea that this ride would become a
00:23:24
remarkable turn of Fortune when they put
00:23:31
me in the back of the paddy wagon I just
00:23:33
started boo-hooing I just got to thing
00:23:34
it dawned on me then nobody knows when
00:23:36
I'm going I don't know where I'm going
00:23:38
you know this has to be hell alone and
00:23:46
scared to death
00:23:47
Kathy began to blurt out her story to
00:23:49
the deputy with me messing with you how
00:23:56
touching me the way a man touches a
00:23:58
woman by the time we arrived at the
00:24:00
reform school the deputy was convinced
00:24:03
that the system had made a terrible
00:24:04
mistake Kathy was obviously being
00:24:07
punished for being a victim
00:24:09
the deputy risked his own job by
00:24:12
offering to help that's all about what
00:24:15
you said and what you said it makes me
00:24:17
believe
00:24:17
and I'd like to check it out for the
00:24:20
ones that you said you wanted me to call
00:24:21
I didn't know if I could believe him
00:24:23
Annette I had believed everybody else
00:24:26
and that still was on my way to Geneva
00:24:28
so somebody something in my heart wasn't
00:24:32
needed believe me it was something kind
00:24:33
in his eyes I saw in that mirror maybe
00:24:36
he would be the one that could do
00:24:38
something I didn't know I just don't
00:24:40
have any idea the unknown deputy was
00:24:47
true to his word seven weeks later Kathy
00:24:50
was taken to the State Building in
00:24:51
downtown Chicago for an interview with a
00:24:53
social worker but Kathy I can't make any
00:24:56
promises we're gonna try and help you
00:24:58
and when you took that paddy wagon ride
00:25:00
down to Geneva you talked to the sheriff
00:25:03
who was driving again they gave him some
00:25:05
names I don't know what you said to him
00:25:07
but whatever it was it must have been
00:25:08
pretty convincing came over here he
00:25:10
talked in the end death the deputy had
00:25:12
contacted Kathy's friends and put them
00:25:14
in touch with our proper authorities
00:25:16
some had even signed affidavits
00:25:19
corroborating Kathy's accusations
00:25:21
against her stepfather look from
00:25:23
everything we've been able to find out
00:25:24
it looks like they're in the wrong place
00:25:26
you got a raw deal he looks to me like
00:25:29
you were railroaded
00:25:30
he said Anna cordon everything I have in
00:25:31
front of me you work he said someone
00:25:33
should go back there keep your nose
00:25:35
clean stay out of trouble and we'll be
00:25:38
back in touch and I thanked him but
00:25:41
knowing that yeah hey this is just
00:25:43
another bubble and it was gonna pop and
00:25:46
float on off into the sunset like the
00:25:48
rest but this time the system worked two
00:25:52
weeks later Kathy Williams was released
00:25:54
from the reformatory ultimately she was
00:25:56
declared an emancipated minor and went
00:25:59
to live with friends in the neighborhood
00:26:01
it was like New Year's you know counting
00:26:04
down for the clock you know it was just
00:26:06
very happy happy time I was finally
00:26:08
getting to go home with my new mother
00:26:10
and finally my new sister stuff joyous
00:26:13
occasion Kathie Williams was fortunate
00:26:19
she flourished in her new family and
00:26:22
started a church group which offers
00:26:23
counseling to abused children but Cathy
00:26:26
has never forgotten the unknown deputy
00:26:29
who led a helping hand every girl I
00:26:34
guess in fairy tales wants the prince on
00:26:37
a horse or a knight in shining armor and
00:26:39
he'd be my night in the paddy wagon and
00:26:41
if I if I could find him I just want to
00:26:44
say to him that many people reach out
00:26:48
for help and many are refused help but
00:26:51
because of the fact that I reached out
00:26:53
to him and he acknowledged me and gave
00:26:56
me the help that I needed
00:26:57
he gave me my life he gave now in my
00:27:00
life I have a healthy son who's here
00:27:03
I've touched other people's lives in
00:27:05
many ways and it had not been for him
00:27:09
none of that would have happened
00:27:10

00:27:33
when we return the bizarre disappearance
00:27:36
of a woman in Florida culminates in
00:27:38
murder on Thursday July 19th 1990 Jane
00:27:54
McGonigal caretta in Florida received a
00:27:56
disturbing letter from her 34 year old
00:27:58
sister Beverly the handwritten note had
00:28:01
been postmarked a day earlier I've got
00:28:05
to make some major changes in my life I
00:28:07
quit my job sold the condo and furniture
00:28:10
and I'm leaving for a while the
00:28:12
following day Jane and Beverly's brother
00:28:14
Steve received a similar letter from
00:28:17
Beverly something bothered me because
00:28:20
that's not the type of person that the
00:28:22
Bev was she was not the kind of person
00:28:24
after spending all her money to try to
00:28:26
get that condo and try to land a job at
00:28:29
the bank when she was seemed to be happy
00:28:31
with it was not her nature to just give
00:28:34
up give up on everything and just walk
00:28:36
away from it that evening Steve and Jane
00:28:40
went to Beverly's condo her car was gone
00:28:44
her phone had been disconnected
00:28:46
and she had not been seen at work for
00:28:48
two days there was her nightgown by in
00:28:53
next to the bed the bed wasn't made I
00:28:56
mean it just looked like you know she's
00:28:58
going out for the day and ever had every
00:28:59
intention of coming back that night
00:29:01
[Music]
00:29:04
it appeared as if Beverly had indeed
00:29:06
decided just to go off and start over
00:29:09
all she took with her were her two cats
00:29:12
her address book birth certificate and
00:29:14
passport
00:29:17
[Music]
00:29:18
Steve and Jane McGowan are completely
00:29:21
baffled by the sisters sudden decision
00:29:23
to walk away from her family and her
00:29:24
life the day after she was last seen
00:29:27
Beverly sent a telegram to her mortgage
00:29:29
company authorizing him to foreclose on
00:29:31
her condo and dispose of her personal
00:29:33
belongings in several letters to family
00:29:35
and friends
00:29:36
Beverly offered no explanations to her
00:29:39
brother Steve she wrote simply I just
00:29:41
want to say goodbye to you and the kids
00:29:43
and let you know that what I'm doing is
00:29:46
the right thing
00:29:51
the type of person that Bev was she had
00:29:54
two different sides to her first side
00:29:56
was her private side which I know she
00:30:00
enjoyed her privacy a tremendous amount
00:30:03
her second side was decided she showed
00:30:05
once she was with myself my sister and
00:30:08
my my family and that was just a
00:30:11
fun-loving person to somebody that's out
00:30:13
to enjoy themselves as much as I
00:30:14
possibly could
00:30:19
in 1987 Beverly McGowan began a
00:30:22
promising career in the loan department
00:30:24
of a Fort Lauderdale bank within two
00:30:27
years she was able to purchase a modest
00:30:29
condo nearby Pompano Beach the week
00:30:33
before her disappearance
00:30:34
Beverly began advertising for a roommate
00:30:38
Bev came in one morning and said that
00:30:41
she had advertised for a roommate and
00:30:45
that this woman Alice was going to be
00:30:47
moving in and approximately I think it
00:30:49
was the following Friday and she just
00:30:53
thought this woman was incredibly nice
00:30:55
it was gonna be great oh they clicked
00:30:58
that's the way she felt no as I was
00:31:02
explaining to you your Life Path number
00:31:04
is your birth date
00:31:06
Beverly told Cindy that Alice was
00:31:08
English she drove a nice car seemed to
00:31:10
be a successful career moreover she and
00:31:13
Beverly shared a common interest in the
00:31:15
New Age movement especially numerology
00:31:19
Oh that shows that you are at a
00:31:22
crossroads in your last beb's for some
00:31:25
numbers that pertain to her life so that
00:31:28
she could do a chart for her and gave
00:31:32
her some numbers not anything real
00:31:35
serious not real personal and she did an
00:31:38
initial chart and then came back and
00:31:40
said I need more information
00:31:41
at which point Bev volunteered her
00:31:43
passport numbers numbers on her birth
00:31:45
certificate well the first adjustment I
00:31:48
see is a long trip apparently I was told
00:31:52
Beverly that she would find true romance
00:31:54
and accumulate great wealth but she did
00:31:58
predict a dark cloud on the horizon but
00:32:01
there is a gray area that I must tell
00:32:03
you about Beverly it involves a couple
00:32:05
Amanda de woman they are related but I
00:32:09
don't know if they're married they're
00:32:11
very close to you and they're going to
00:32:13
deceive

00:32:24
Thursday July 19th two days after
00:32:27
Beverly was last seen at 5:30 p.m. the
00:32:32
mutilated body of a woman was found at
00:32:34
the edge of a drainage canal in st.
00:32:35
Lucie County 100 miles from Pompano
00:32:38
Beach the victims had had been crudely
00:32:45
decapitated only a portion of the lower
00:32:47
jaw and five teeth are lamed her hands
00:32:51
had been severed her throat slit and
00:32:53
Potter abdomen cut away apparently to
00:32:56
remove the tattoos we assume that
00:33:00
whoever committed the murder was trying
00:33:04
to conceal her identity it was probably
00:33:09
one of the most gruesome homicides that
00:33:12
our agency has investigated in recent
00:33:15
years the only solid clue to the
00:33:19
victim's identity had been overlooked by
00:33:21
the killer a small tattoo of a yellow
00:33:24
rose on her right ankle Beverly McGowan
00:33:27
had just such a tattoo four days later
00:33:33
dental records provided positive
00:33:35
identification the dead woman was
00:33:38
Beverly and McGowan we found nothing in
00:33:43
her background that would indicate that
00:33:45
she was anytime in any type of trouble
00:33:47
or was involved in anything illegal the
00:33:51
authorities and Beverly's family were
00:33:53
especially baffled by her letters they
00:33:56
were all in her handwriting and there
00:33:58
was no indication that she had been
00:33:59
coerced into sending them investigators
00:34:04
immediately searched Beverly's condo
00:34:06
looking for something anything tying
00:34:08
Beverly's apparent decision to leave
00:34:10
with her murder
00:34:12
they found a notepad with a list of
00:34:15
names and phone numbers of people who
00:34:16
had called about the ad for a roommate
00:34:18
only the last notation did not check out
00:34:21
it read Alice Tuesday 6:30 no last name
00:34:26
no phone number
00:34:28
Alice was supposed to be on loan to the
00:34:31
United States from England working for
00:34:34
IBM in in South Florida upon checking
00:34:37
with the IBM corporation we learned that
00:34:41
they had nobody on loan to South Florida
00:34:43
from England and at the office that
00:34:46
Alice said she worked for in Fort
00:34:48
Lauderdale that they didn't even have an
00:34:50
office in Fort Lauderdale it's going to
00:34:58
be a charge investigators soon
00:35:00
discovered that on the day Beverly's
00:35:02
body was found a woman fitting alice's
00:35:05
description used Beverly's Visa card to
00:35:07
make purchases at several shops in the
00:35:09
area the day before someone had used the
00:35:13
card to withdraw $300 from an automatic
00:35:15
teller machine on Friday July 20th the
00:35:19
day after the body was discovered the
00:35:21
case took another bizarre twist someone
00:35:25
used the same credit card in North Miami
00:35:27
to reserve a rental car at London's
00:35:29
Heathrow Airport yes I'd like to buy a
00:35:33
car rental voucher the travel agent
00:35:39
described this person as a very
00:35:42
masculine looking female that to them
00:35:45
appeared to be a male wearing a cheap
00:35:49
black Cleopatra wig taxis in London
00:35:53
these days just so expensive she also
00:35:56
described her as having a British accent
00:35:59
and a person who was appear to be very
00:36:01
familiar with the Heathrow area in
00:36:05
London England
00:36:07
the man told the travel agent that he
00:36:10
was flying to London on British Airways
00:36:11
flight 292 which was scheduled to depart
00:36:14
on Sunday evening a 6:30 p.m.
00:36:18
we check the manifests for that
00:36:20
particular flight and other airlines
00:36:23
that we're traveling to London on that
00:36:25
particular day nowhere on any of the
00:36:29
manifests did we see the name of Beverly
00:36:31
Ann McGowan on Monday July 23rd a person
00:36:38
wearing a cheap looking wig in posing as
00:36:40
Beverly McGowan did indeed pick up a car
00:36:43
at Heathrow Airport
00:36:47
two days later
00:36:49
Beverly's car was found at a motel near
00:36:51
Miami International Airport it had been
00:36:54
there for at least five days
00:36:57
investigators found only one significant
00:37:00
clue four strands of black synthetic wig
00:37:06
hair the mystery surrounding Beverly
00:37:12
McGowan's death reverberates with a
00:37:13
single word why it seems obvious that
00:37:17
Beverly was a victim of a scam but it
00:37:19
was a scam which only netted the
00:37:21
perpetrators $1000 why would anyone
00:37:24
commit such a vicious murder for so
00:37:26
little money why did they go to such
00:37:28
lengths to conceal the victim's identity
00:37:30
and why did they choose Beverly McGowan
00:37:37
the most puzzling part about it is the
00:37:40
lack of motive the savage nature in
00:37:44
which the body was decapitated and the
00:37:48
pains that they went through trying to
00:37:52
conceal her identity isn't that of your
00:37:56
normal everyday domestic killing I tried
00:38:02
to think about the people that they've
00:38:04
worked for her friends her relationships
00:38:09
what kind of person would would be
00:38:11
involved with it with a murder like this
00:38:13
why somebody would come in to to my

in 1985 Sally Garrity of San Francisco
00:39:24
California faced an all-too-common
00:39:26
dilemma she was looking to settle down
00:39:28
but had not yet found the man of her
00:39:30
dreams
00:39:32
excuse me then in February of that year
00:39:35
that a neighborhood tavern
00:39:36
Sally thought she had met the perfect
00:39:38
mate a young man named Sal guardado
00:39:41
all right can you break what's her name
00:39:43
anyway Sally what's yours Sal Sal
00:39:46
guardado Sal Sally that's neat she said
00:39:50
I think I met mr. right sherry so I was
00:39:53
very happy for her to have a good meet
00:39:56
someone that would make her happy and I
00:39:59
seen that in her face that Sal had made
00:40:02
her happy but just the short time that
00:40:05
she had met him and known him
00:40:07
[Music]
00:40:09
sallie gary was half Irish half Shoshone
00:40:12
Paiute Indian she and her sister sherry
00:40:17
were raised by their aunt Lydia in San
00:40:19
Francisco Sally had been trained as a
00:40:23
bookkeeper
00:40:24
but was making and selling Native
00:40:26
American handicrafts when she met Sal
00:40:30
Sal worked part-time in a local pizza
00:40:33
parlor where Sally brought her family to
00:40:35
meet him Sally was really glowing when
00:40:49
she introduced me she was so happy and
00:40:51
she said did you see his car do you see
00:40:54
him he has a job and her expression and
00:40:58
her glowing was so over just
00:41:01
overpowering that she was so happy
00:41:05
[Music]
00:41:07
the romance proceeded at a whirlwind
00:41:09
pace within a week Sal proposed and took
00:41:13
out a loan for a diamond ring but it
00:41:15
wasn't long before the relationship
00:41:17
began to change Sal lost his job on his
00:41:22
car
00:41:23
and the couple was forced to move in
00:41:25
with Sally's aunt Lydia it became
00:41:27
obvious that there was another side to
00:41:29
Sal that had been hidden until now this
00:41:32
place is a dump
00:41:35
he grew surly and refused to do anything
00:41:38
but watch television and go bowling with
00:41:40
his friends
00:41:48
three weeks later when they visited a
00:41:50
Native American festival 30 miles from
00:41:52
San Francisco
00:41:53
Sally's sister Cheri got a first-hand
00:41:56
look at Sal's darker side Sally didn't
00:42:05
seem very happy that day that was the
00:42:08
first indication to me that she wasn't
00:42:11
happy with him so do you want to tell
00:42:15
her just forget about it Sal not gonna
00:42:17
work out
00:42:17
what's the matter what are you talking
00:42:18
about Sal doesn't want to take the train
00:42:20
back to San Francisco he wants to borrow
00:42:22
your van instead oh I'm sorry Sal you
00:42:24
can't take it what is the problem we
00:42:26
need the van so we'll just take it so
00:42:28
it's not mine I just borrowed it for the
00:42:29
day I have to get it back don't give me
00:42:31
that bye where are the keys not a lie
00:42:33
you can't take it shut up and give me
00:42:34
the keys I don't listen all your lyin
00:42:36
excuses come on now leave it alone the
00:42:38
models on his he baby was a big change
00:42:40
from the pizza parlor she indicated to
00:42:44
me that she wish he would leave and that
00:42:49
he would move out
00:42:51
[Music]
00:42:53
on May 23rd 1985 three months after
00:42:56
meeting Sally Sal guardado waited for
00:42:59
her to come home
00:43:09
when he noticed that a young man had
00:43:11
given her a ride Sal became
00:43:13
uncontrollable just drop it well you say
00:43:17
nobody told you I didn't do anything I
00:43:20
do when I could see you in the car he's
00:43:22
afraid
00:43:24
Sally zap Lydia returned right in the
00:43:27
middle of the argument oh I just hate it
00:43:34
he was very aggressive
00:43:37
he might've got tell us yes but there's
00:43:41
nothing between the man and Sally she
00:43:44
just rode home with him lady I need you
00:43:48
to go to the store for me I need some
00:43:49
smokes
00:43:49
okay so here's some money leave him
00:43:52
right away
00:43:52
okay he never asked me to do anything it
00:43:57
was just what me I allows that name when
00:44:00
I think about it that's what I think
00:44:04
that's what he wanted me out
00:44:07
[Music]
00:44:08
I'm home Sal I got your cigarettes here
00:44:13
thirty minutes later
00:44:14
Lydia returned I didn't see anything
00:44:23
when I came back it was so quiet then
00:44:29
the TV was on so I just sat down on
00:44:31
their stay bed and thought well I better
00:44:34
watch some news as it was coming on I
00:44:41
heard the bedroom door open and I didn't
00:44:44
hear nothing else I just kept watching
00:44:46
the news
00:44:49
[Music]
00:44:52
he's tried to strangle me let's start
00:44:57
fighting email before I know I got the
00:45:00
hit on her head
00:45:01
I heard that bones crushing and the ball
00:45:05
roll over or something you know you can
00:45:09
hear that bowling ball roll in the lanes
00:45:13
how it sounds that's what I heard but
00:45:16
that was out after about 45 minutes
00:45:24
Lydia regained consciousness when I came
00:45:30
to I got up and I was so weak I was just
00:45:33
staggering around and then I went in the
00:45:36
bedroom
00:45:37
my niece was laying there I knew right
00:45:42
away she was dead
00:45:44
[Music]
00:45:48
and after that I just went to my
00:45:50
neighbor and told knocked on the window
00:45:52
and told her call the police I was hurt
00:45:58
Sally Garrity had been strangled to
00:46:00
death possibly with a cat leash or
00:46:02
telephone cord
00:46:04
Lydia Henry had suffered a concussion
00:46:06
and lacerations during the investigation
00:46:10
Sally's family discovered that Sal
00:46:11
guardado was a convicted felon with a
00:46:14
long criminal record it spent five years
00:46:17
in prison for arson and attempted murder
00:46:19
the intended victim was a former
00:46:21
girlfriend authorities immediately began
00:46:25
combing the San Francisco area they
00:46:27
received reports that cell might have
00:46:29
left the country and disappeared in
00:46:31
Mexico we thought we'd solved this case
00:46:35
right away we had the FBI involved we
00:46:38
had local law enforcement involved we
00:46:41
had all the tools and we just couldn't
00:46:44
find out where he'd going or where he
00:46:46
was
00:46:47
boggles the mind to understand how we
00:46:49
avoided this all this time some seven
00:46:51
