Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 1, Episode 16 - Full Episode

May 16, 2019 / 48:29

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the murders and disappearances of several individuals, including undercover cop Lester Gagne, businessman Angelo Desiderio, and schoolgirl Cathy Hobbs. It also features the search for lost siblings, Bill Puritan and his sister Jackie.

Lester Gagne was found shot dead in his Corvette in Walnut Creek, California, in 1988. Eyewitnesses reported seeing two unidentified women with him shortly before his death. The investigation revealed little evidence, and the motive for his murder remains unclear.

Angelo Desiderio vanished from his Phoenix home in 1988, with his burned-out car discovered 400 miles away in San Diego. Investigators suspect foul play, and a local resident was charged with conspiracy related to his disappearance, but his body has never been found.

Cathy Hobbs disappeared at 16 while walking to a supermarket in Las Vegas. Her body was discovered nine days later, and evidence suggested she had been abducted. A witness reported seeing her abduction but has since disappeared.

Bill Puritan, separated from his siblings in 1934, continues to search for his sister Jackie. The episode highlights the emotional toll of these unsolved cases and the hope that viewers may provide crucial information.

00:02:31
July 11th 1988 it was a quiet morning in
00:02:36
Walnut Creek California an affluent
00:02:38
suburb of San Francisco a groundskeeper
00:02:41
noticed a Corvette sitting in a
00:02:43
shopping-center parking lot his
00:02:45
attention was drawn by the car's driver
00:02:47
apparently napping behind the wheel the
00:02:51
man was not asleep he was dead the cause
00:02:56
of death was determined to be two bullet
00:02:59
wounds this was an extremely
00:03:02
cold-blooded deliberate killing the sort
00:03:06
of person that would do something like
00:03:09
this is extremely dangerous the victim
00:03:13
was identified as Lester Gagne an
00:03:15
undercover vice cop with a San Francisco
00:03:17
police department who lived a nearby
00:03:19
Concord after the revelation that Lester
00:03:25
was an undercover cop the investigation
00:03:27
took on a new dimension for this reason
00:03:31
a search for Lester's killer was
00:03:32
undertaken by both the Walnut Creek and
00:03:35
San Francisco police departments
00:03:38
there was very little evidence left at
00:03:40
the crime scene that would give us much
00:03:42
help in identifying the criminal we do
00:03:45
have a few fingerprints that have not
00:03:47
been identified but we've been unable to
00:03:50
find any motive at all for the killing

00:03:59
Lester Garnier's death touched off a
00:04:01
firestorm of controversy when the case
00:04:03
became a mesh tin a local political
00:04:05
skeptic but through all of this Westar
00:04:08
Garnier's killer remains at large to
00:04:15
those who knew him best
00:04:16
Lester Garnier was a walking
00:04:17
contradiction to his parents he was a
00:04:20
devoted son who lived with him in the
00:04:22
home that he provided to his friends
00:04:25
Lester was a man who lived and loved in
00:04:26
the fast lane but to his partners on the
00:04:29
police force
00:04:30
Lester Gagne was first and foremost a
00:04:32
dedicated cop went the distance for his
00:04:34
job somewhere between the lines of these
00:04:37
contradictions may lie the reason why
00:04:39
Lester Gagne was murdered if you wanted
00:04:44
to find Lester Gagne off duty the
00:04:46
chances are he would be behind the wheel
00:04:47
of his prized 1984 Corvette Lester enjoy
00:04:52
the good life but he was not blind of
00:04:54
the responsibilities of being a good son
00:04:57
Lester was a wonderful son he always was
00:05:02
there for us he gave us security knowing
00:05:08
that if anything happens he's always
00:05:12
there for us
00:05:18
but there was another side to Lester
00:05:20
Gagne off duty he enjoyed a reputation
00:05:23
as a ladies man according to friends
00:05:29
this reputation was well-deserved lester
00:05:34
used his charm on the job as well his
00:05:39
beat was the Mission District once a
00:05:41
quiet residential neighborhood today a
00:05:44
low-income area frequented by
00:05:46
prostitutes Lester had worked vice for
00:05:49
four and a half years and was at home on
00:05:51
the mean streets of the mission where he
00:05:53
would often do prostitutes by posing as
00:05:55
a customer we found that he had made
00:05:58
numerous arrests for prostitution
00:06:01
we certainly examined that aspect of his
00:06:04
life and we weren't able to find any
00:06:07
connection with our case we interviewed
00:06:11
several of the prostitutes that Lester
00:06:13
had arrested and found that many of them
00:06:16
spoke highly of him even though he had
00:06:20
arrested them he wanted to do a good job
00:06:24
and the type of job that he had he had
00:06:27
to make sure he made all the right moves
00:06:29
[Music]
00:06:31
he enjoyed his job to a certain degree
00:06:34
it was a challenge for him every day
00:06:37
different people different situations
00:06:39
all the time
00:06:40
those were the streets that we grew up
00:06:42
in and he felt that he wanted to make
00:06:46
the city a better place and by being a
00:06:48
police officer he was doing that one of
00:06:53
Lester's final assignments would throw
00:06:55
the murder investigation in a turmoil in
00:06:58
the fall of 1988
00:07:00
Roger boys local mayoral candidate pled
00:07:04
guilty to charges of having sex with
00:07:06
underage prostitutes Lester had been on
00:07:09
stakeout duty at one of the houses in
00:07:11
this prostitution ring just prior to his
00:07:13
death the local media attempted to tie
00:07:17
the two events together in addition
00:07:20
there were rumors that some san
00:07:21
francisco police may have been involved
00:07:23
in Westers death but so far these rumors
00:07:27
are uncorroborated we did address those
00:07:31
issues and did a very thorough
00:07:33
investigation but we found no connection
00:07:35
at all between Lester Garnier's death
00:07:38
and the roger boas case or any other
00:07:42
matter for that matter
00:07:47
July 10th 1988 approximately 12 hours
00:07:51
before his body would be discovered
00:07:53
Lester left his Concord home to meet
00:07:55
friends in San Francisco less than 20
00:07:59
minutes later Lester called from his car
00:08:01
phone and cancelled the evening he gave
00:08:04
no explanation during this conversation
00:08:12
he cancelled the meeting with his
00:08:14
friends saying it was getting late after
00:08:17
that we don't know what happened to him
00:08:18
until his vehicle showed up in the
00:08:20
parking lot
00:08:22
shortly before 11:30 p.m.
00:08:24
that time period is very critical as a
00:08:29
portion of our investigation naturally
00:08:32
we searched for witnesses and we
00:08:34
discovered that there was a carpet layer
00:08:37
working in one of the stores late that
00:08:40
evening as he went out to his truck he
00:08:44
heard what sounded to him like
00:08:46
firecrackers it was around the 4th of
00:08:50
July so he discounted those sounds as
00:08:52
firecrackers shortly after he looked up
00:08:56
and saw two women walking across the
00:08:58
parking lot
00:08:59
the women entered two different vehicles
00:09:03
and left the workman described one of
00:09:07
the women as being in her late twenties
00:09:09
about five feet six inches tall said
00:09:12
that she weighed about a hundred and ten
00:09:13
pounds the other was described as being
00:09:16
in her mid-30s tall the slender build we
00:09:21
also located one witness who was
00:09:23
actually driving through the lot as he
00:09:26
drove past the Corvette he saw a woman
00:09:28
opened the passenger door and exit the
00:09:31
vehicle
00:09:32
he saw her walk around the vehicle and
00:09:34
appear to look in the driver's side of
00:09:36
the Corvette
00:09:38
it's possible that these were just two
00:09:42
separate sightings not associated with
00:09:45
each other however it's also possible
00:09:47
that they are somehow related under
00:09:51
hypnosis the second witness helped
00:09:53
police to create a composite drawing of
00:09:55
the woman her appearance was similar to
00:09:57
the other eyewitness description when we
00:10:00
showed this to the carpet layer he felt
00:10:03
that this sketch closely resembled the
00:10:05
shorter of the two women that he saw
00:10:07
walking across the parking lot who was a
00:10:13
blonde woman seen with Lester that night
00:10:15
but a casual pickup have turned into
00:10:18
something deadly or was Lester killed as
00:10:21
a result of his undercover life
00:10:24
[Music]
00:10:40
next the story of schoolgirl Cathy Hobbs
00:10:43
who vanished on her way back to Las
00:10:45
Vegas Supermarket anonymous tipster may
00:10:47
have seen her abductors now he too has
00:10:50
disappeared someone out there is walking
00:10:52
the streets killing kids and they killed
00:10:58
my daughter and before they could kill
00:11:01
someone else's dog on a recent broadcast
00:11:14
we examine the case of a Florida Widow
00:11:16
when we called mrs. K she claims that
00:11:19
she was romanced and then swindled by a
00:11:21
man named Arthur Frankfort after a four
00:11:24
week whirlwind romance
00:11:26
Arthur Frankfort convinced mrs. K to let
00:11:28
him move in with her never once was I
00:11:31
suspicious of any move that he made as
00:11:33
far as to question his character who he
00:11:36
was and he was that he was a liar and a
00:11:38
thief on July 29th 1988 or mrs. K was at
00:11:43
work Arthur Frankfort disappeared after
00:11:46
allegedly stealing jewelry worth over
00:11:48
four thousand dollars as well as many
00:11:50
personal items belonging to mrs. Kay's
00:11:52
late husband Arthur Frankfort is wanted
00:11:55
by Florida police for burglary grand
00:11:57
theft auto and check forging authorities
00:12:00
believe that he may have victimized over
00:12:02
40 women by stealing their hearts and
00:12:04
then taking their cash update within
00:12:09
minutes of our broadcast two viewers
00:12:11
called our 800 number to report that
00:12:13
they recognized arthur frankfort the
00:12:16
individual said I'd know where Arthur
00:12:18
Frankfort is I'm his ex brother-in-law
00:12:20
my name is Floyd meadows I asked him if
00:12:24
he had ever seen this Arthur Frankfort
00:12:26
do magic he said yes he did and he does
00:12:29
it very well this is one of the keys
00:12:31
that I never released to the press or
00:12:33
any other medium that Arthur Frankford
00:12:36
does magic we received another call
00:12:39
about 20 minutes later from a white
00:12:41
female says Arthur Frankfort lives next
00:12:44
door to me and Whitley Kentucky the
00:12:47
was the confirmation call that I was
00:12:49
looking for at that time I knew we had
00:12:52
our man
00:12:53
[Music]
00:12:55
two hours later Frankfurt was arrested
00:12:58
at his home in Kentucky by the McCreary
00:13:00
County Sheriff and Kentucky State
00:13:01
Troopers he was living under the assumed
00:13:04
name James Ferguson with his new wife of
00:13:07
two months during a search of
00:13:09
Frankfurt's house police uncovered
00:13:11
several identification and credit cards
00:13:13
with different aliases they also found a
00:13:15
handgun that may have been stolen from
00:13:17
mrs. Kay's home we got other calls from
00:13:21
women that say yes I've been married to
00:13:23
this man
00:13:23
I've divorced him he's left me holding
00:13:26
the bag and what I need is for the
00:13:30
people that have been victimized by
00:13:32
Arthur Frankfort to come forward it's
00:13:36
time for the public to stand up and say
00:13:38
hey we've had enough of Arthur Frankfort
00:13:40
this man has preyed on the public long
00:13:42
enough
00:13:43
[Music]
00:13:56
Las Vegas a glamorous capital and slot
00:13:59
machines blackjack high-stakes gambler
00:14:01
an adult amusement park but just one
00:14:06
mile off the strip is another side of
00:14:08
Las Vegas the real world that tourists
00:14:11
never see an ordinary part of suburban
00:14:14
America on the evening of July 23rd 1987
00:14:20
16 year-old Cathy Hobbs was reading a
00:14:23
romance novel in her bedroom at 11:00
00:14:27
p.m. she decided to walk to the local
00:14:29
supermarket to buy another book just one
00:14:32
and a half blocks away she came out to
00:14:36
me and she said mom I'm going down to
00:14:37
the store and buy a book and she said
00:14:40
give me a kiss before I go and I said
00:14:43
why I'll be up when you get back and she
00:14:45
says well she says I probably will stop
00:14:47
and talk to the kids so you might be a
00:14:50
good when I get back so I gave her a
00:14:52
kiss
00:14:53
and that was the last I saw of her Cathy
00:14:58
had walked to the store late at night
00:14:59
many times usually her friends were
00:15:02
gathered at the apartment complex
00:15:03
swimming pool chatting and gossiping so
00:15:06
Cathy's mother wasn't concerned for her
00:15:07
safety
00:15:10
one of the kids would walk down to the
00:15:12
store with her there was no one at the
00:15:15
Stormville that night
00:15:17
so instead of coming home she decided to
00:15:21
go on to the store by herself
00:15:27
assuming the Kathi would be with her
00:15:29
friends Vivian went to sleep at 3 a.m.
00:15:33
she awoke from a strange dream that at
00:15:35
the time seemed innocent but would later
00:15:38
come back to haunt her I woke up at her
00:15:42
sound sleep I felt like I had been hit
00:15:45
on the head and all of a sudden I got a
00:15:48
very peaceful feeling and it was well
00:15:51
it's over now and I fell back to sleep
00:15:55
the next morning Vivian discovered that
00:15:58
Cathy's bedroom was empty she still did
00:16:00
not come home within the first day we
00:16:03
had tracked down friends relatives and
00:16:07
done a very extensive media campaign on
00:16:11
the television with Catherine's picture
00:16:13
all day long at the end of the second
00:16:16
day we were pretty much convinced that
00:16:18
Kathryn was probably abducted Kathy's
00:16:21
disappearance was a culmination of years
00:16:23
of worry for her family her as a child
00:16:26
Kathy had eerie premonitions that she
00:16:28
would die at nearly age she was an
00:16:30
isolated introverted girl when Kathy was
00:16:33
aged she began telling her friends she
00:16:35
would not live to the age of 16 she did
00:16:40
not have a happy childhood her father
00:16:43
and I went through a divorce when she
00:16:44
was 8 years old
00:16:45
she and her father were extremely close
00:16:48
when she was in the seventh grade a very
00:16:51
good friend of hers died of a heart
00:16:54
disease that affected Kathy very much
00:16:56
and that's one of the main reasons we
00:16:59
moved to Las Vegas was to give Kathy
00:17:01
another chance to get away from that
00:17:04
atmosphere and the environment that she
00:17:06
grew up in at first it seemed that the
00:17:10
move to Las Vegas had been the right
00:17:11
decision
00:17:12
even though Kathy remained withdrawn she
00:17:15
did blossom and made some new friends
00:17:18
however as her 16th birthday drew closer
00:17:21
Kathy's old fears of dying returned
00:17:25
about 2 months before her 16th birthday
00:17:27
she got very teary-eyed one night and
00:17:29
told me mom I don't want to get any
00:17:32
older I want to be a little girl and I
00:17:36
told her I said Kathy we all have to
00:17:38
grow up and you know it's it's not the
00:17:40
easiest thing
00:17:41
the world to do what we all do it she's
00:17:43
told me I'm not going to she didn't
00:17:46
think she'd make her 16th birthday just
00:17:51
before her 16th birthday
00:17:53
Kathy became despondent again she spent
00:17:55
all her time in her room and would not
00:17:57
leave the house on the morning of her
00:17:59
birthday though Kathy was surprised and
00:18:01
relieved to find she was still alive and
00:18:04
she came out of her bedroom and she said
00:18:07
mom I did it I did it I made it and I
00:18:09
said what she said I made 16 I didn't
00:18:12
think I'd live to be 16 now Kathy had a
00:18:16
new enthusiasm for life and began making
00:18:18
plans for her future she began to go out
00:18:22
again wanted to continue her education
00:18:23
and started to wear makeup she plan to
00:18:27
train as a hair stylist and open her own
00:18:29
beauty shop called cats cuts she was
00:18:34
ecstatic she came out guys I made it mom
00:18:36
I mean it I'm 16 is it it arrived after
00:18:43
Kathy vanished the authorities assumed
00:18:46
that she had been abducted and issued
00:18:47
photos to the entire police department
00:18:51
the local media were encouraged to
00:18:53
publicize Kathy's disappearance and
00:18:55
volunteer organizations were mobilized
00:18:57
to search for the missing girl
00:19:00
eventually one crucial clue surfaced a
00:19:03
clerk remembered seeing Kathy in the
00:19:06
supermarket that night she vanished
00:19:07
store receipts confirm that someone did
00:19:10
purchase a paperback novel at 11:17 that
00:19:13
night apparently Kathy had made it to
00:19:16
the store on Desert Inn Road and
00:19:17
Maryland Parkway but she never made it
00:19:20
home it was late at night but Las Vegas
00:19:26
as you all know is a 24-hour town and
00:19:28
people are coming and going to work
00:19:30
constantly in this town this
00:19:32
intersection is a large intersection
00:19:34
widely traveled and the store is a
00:19:37
24-hour major store and to have people
00:19:40
coming and going from the store and
00:19:42
nobody's seeing anything was very very
00:19:45
surprising
00:19:49
nine days after Cathy vanished hiker
00:19:52
Rick pakad was searching for unusual
00:19:55
rock crystals out in the desert near
00:19:56
Lake Mead
00:19:57
about an hour from Las Vegas was walking
00:20:01
back to the car and was probably 150
00:20:04
feet 200 feet from the road and was
00:20:07
stopped by a very strong odor decided to
00:20:10
see where it was coming from or what it
00:20:12
was and that's when I found Catherine's
00:20:16
body it was the most horrible thing I'd
00:20:22
ever seen in my life I had to sit down
00:20:23
and gather my thoughts and make sure
00:20:26
that what I was looking at was real when
00:20:31
I realized that it was a human body went
00:20:35
back to the car back to Colville Bay
00:20:37
ranger station and got the Rangers and
00:20:39
brought them back out to the site
00:20:41
[Music]
00:20:43
within probably 20 minutes of our
00:20:45
arrival we knew it was Catherine there
00:20:47
was no doubt in our own minds that it
00:20:48
was going to be Catherine and it does
00:20:52
get very quiet and you you can't help
00:20:56
but look at it and see your own children
00:20:58
and say for the grace of God there goes
00:21:00
one of mine
00:21:03
your immediate feeling at the time is to
00:21:09
want to run home grab your daughter by
00:21:12
the arm and bring her to the scene and
00:21:15
say this is why I say no you can't go
00:21:17
out late at night the investigators
00:21:21
found tire imprints at the scene showing
00:21:24
where a vehicle had pulled in turned
00:21:26
around and left
00:21:27
they also found two rocks spattered with
00:21:30
blood near Kathy's body tests
00:21:33
established that the stains matched
00:21:34
Kathy's blood type the coroner concluded
00:21:37
that Cathy Hobbs had died from repeated
00:21:40
blows to the head she was 16 years three
00:21:44
months and three days old when she was
00:21:47
killed
00:21:48
so she made it 16 but after that but she
00:21:54
was right you know she did have a
00:21:55
premonition um that she wasn't going to
00:22:00
live to be an adult after Kathy's death
00:22:04
letters were found in her room addressed
00:22:06
to each member of the family the letters
00:22:09
were dated one month before Kathy 16th
00:22:12
birthday dear mother an event of my
00:22:15
death you shall get this letter I hope
00:22:19
you live happily and I don't want you or
00:22:22
anybody else to dwell on my death I love
00:22:25
you all very dearly you were good to me
00:22:28
and nobody else could have been a better
00:22:31
brother keep me alive in your heart and
00:22:34
don't ever forget me love always Cathy
00:22:38
[Applause]
00:22:40
but she was a very good friend as well
00:22:44
it's paid by doctor for the most direct
00:22:48
route to where she was found would be
00:22:50
straight down Desert Inn on October 24th
00:22:55
exactly three months after Kathy
00:22:57
vanished an answering machine at the Las
00:22:59
Vegas police department recorded a
00:23:01
startling call from a man who may have
00:23:03
been a witness to Kathy's abduction the
00:23:29
theory that we have is that she was
00:23:31
abducted between the store and her
00:23:34
apartment by one or more suspects we
00:23:38
think she was driven to the lake that
00:23:41
night I believe that she was abducted
00:23:44
and killed that evening the caller
00:23:48
reported the license plate number of a
00:23:50
car he saw a girl being forced into but
00:23:52
he did not leave his name or phone
00:23:54
number the police checked the license
00:23:57
number and discovered it did not exist
00:23:59
the crucial tip came over a year ago and
00:24:02
despite repeated Appeals the witness
00:24:05
still hasn't called back and we need to
00:24:08
find out if he possesses any more
00:24:10
information and if he doesn't wish to
00:24:13
give a name that's fine but we do need
00:24:15
to talk to him someone out there is
00:24:17
walking the streets killing kids and
00:24:23
they killed my daughter and before they
00:24:26
can kill someone else's daughter I want
00:24:28
the car

00:24:59
last December we brought you a story
00:25:02
that began over 40 years ago war-torn
00:25:04
Eastern Europe 1945 is Hitler's Third
00:25:07
Reich crumbled refugees choked the
00:25:10
highways and rural roads Carl dente and
00:25:13
his family fled their home in Budapest
00:25:15
Hungary across the border into Austria
00:25:18
as winter found on the weather turned
00:25:20
bitter cold the daddies were forced to
00:25:22
live in a boxcar life was particularly
00:25:25
hard for Carl's five-year-old daughter
00:25:27
Vegeta a few days before Christmas all
00:25:31
had changed in an American soldier known
00:25:33
only as Philip past the daddies if he
00:25:35
could take Brigitte to a Christmas party
00:25:37
given for the refugee children by the
00:25:40
Americans yes yes yes the over forty
00:25:45
years have passed since that night
00:25:47
Vegeta remembers it as if it were
00:25:49
yesterday
00:25:50
girl it made me feel very very special
00:25:53
instead of making me feel safe and happy
00:25:56
he made me feel like a big girl but I
00:25:59
felt like a princess
00:26:01
it's like someone opened a magic door
00:26:06
I felt like I was in a dream I never
00:26:11
wanted to dream to end
00:26:13
[Music]
00:26:18
over the next few months a deep and
00:26:20
caring friendship grew between Philip
00:26:22
and the den tease
00:26:23
then one day Philip came to the camp of
00:26:26
bad news his unit had been recalled back
00:26:29
to the United States and we'd be leaving
00:26:31
immediately
00:26:32
he gave Carl a photograph to remember
00:26:34
him by
00:26:35
though the daddy's never saw Philip
00:26:37
again they will never forget the warmth
00:26:40
and kindness he brought their family on
00:26:42
that Christmas Day so long ago he
00:26:45
brought the big change in our life
00:26:47
little happiness you know give us me a
00:26:50
cleric confidence of the human race
00:26:55
after 11 years of struggle and hardship
00:26:58
the daddy's finally made it to America
00:27:00
for 30 years Carl and Brigitte our
00:27:03
search for Philip their only clue was
00:27:06
the photograph he left them 43 years ago
00:27:09
[Music]
00:27:14
within an hour of our broadcast mrs.
00:27:16
Pauline Dottie of Augusta Maine called
00:27:18
our 800 number to say that the man named
00:27:20
Philip and our story is her cousin
00:27:22
Philip Pelletier he's a retired postal
00:27:25
worker lives in Hammond Indiana we
00:27:27
immediately called Carl and Brigitte
00:27:29
identity helped to arrange a real on
00:27:34
Wednesday December 28th 1988
00:27:37
Conn and Vegeta's 30 years search for
00:27:39
Philip came to an emotional end really
00:28:01
pretty hard to tell you just how I feel
00:28:03
after so many years and trying to
00:28:06
recollect everything that we went
00:28:08
through together you know it's very hard
00:28:11
it's very exciting it's almost
00:28:15
unbelievable it's something like a
00:28:21
Christmas miracle because when he left I
00:28:24
was thinking about it I ever see him
00:28:27
again
00:28:27
and here we go after 43 years be back
00:28:30
together again it's just like a dream
00:28:33
came too hard to believe it sometimes I
00:28:36
had a feeling I gonna wake up the minute
00:28:43
that I saw him I could see the warmth
00:28:45
and happy look on his face smiling like
00:28:53
we really never had lost touch in a way
00:28:57
caryl Brigitte and Philip spent the
00:28:59
afternoon looking through photographs
00:29:01
that brought back memories of that
00:29:03
special time they spent together we're
00:29:07
gonna stay with touch we're gonna try to
00:29:08
visit each other as much as possible
00:29:11
we're gonna bring you the friendship
00:29:14
what we had before you know it's it's a
00:29:17
friendship forever bill puritan a 62
00:29:29
year old retired New Hampshire
00:29:31
businessman was separated from his
00:29:33
family in 1934 when he was 8 years old
00:29:36
back then his last name was Harrington
00:29:39
and his family was struggling to survive
00:29:41
the depression bill was one of six
00:29:44
children who stayed at home while his
00:29:46
parents were away working on August the
00:29:51
3rd 1934 the Harrington children were
00:29:54
preparing a birthday party for Bill and
00:29:56
his little sister Jackie the children
00:30:00
were unaware that four of them would
00:30:02
soon be torn from their family in the
00:30:04
space of a few moments all of their
00:30:07
lives would change forever
00:30:10
[Music]
00:30:12
the Harrington family lived in the small
00:30:14
upstate town of Hartford New York
00:30:18
the neighbors felt that the four
00:30:19
youngest children were being neglected
00:30:22
they reported the herring goes to the
00:30:24
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
00:30:26
Children the society took action on the
00:30:30
very day a Bill and Jackie's birthday
00:30:33
celebration
00:30:35
[Music]
00:30:37
the social workers arrived when both
00:30:39
parents are out working
00:30:42
despite the parents absence the
00:30:45
Harrington children's modest birthday
00:30:46
celebration was already in progress as
00:31:04
soon as a party was finished the social
00:31:07
workers took the four youngest children
00:31:09
away
00:31:09

00:31:13
bill any years of age was the oldest of
00:31:16
the four I didn't know who they were and
00:31:19
they told me that I was going to take a
00:31:21
trip and I was excited I was gonna go on
00:31:26
a train I was gonna go on my car I was
00:31:29
gonna see things that I hadn't seen
00:31:31
before and it was exciting until I
00:31:33
realized that I wasn't going home and I
00:31:36
became angry
00:31:38
[Music]
00:31:40
I was upset and that's when I realized
00:31:45
that I was not gonna see my family again
00:31:47
[Music]
00:31:58
bill and his three younger siblings were
00:32:01
put up for adoption
00:32:02
they went to four different families in
00:32:04
the state of New York they would not see
00:32:07
one another again for nearly 50 years in
00:32:13
1948 when bill was 22 and just out of
00:32:16
the army he began the search for his
00:32:18
lost brothers and sisters he made no
00:32:22
headway at all until 1976 when he wrote
00:32:25
to the records clerk in hartwig New York
00:32:28
just as the clerk was replying to Bill's
00:32:31
letter a chess visitor dropped by bill
00:32:42
immediately wrote to the San Francisco
00:32:44
address and received a cautious reply
00:32:46
from Wanda his older sister Wanda just
00:32:50
said I'm Wanda Harrington and if you
00:32:54
want any information about the family
00:32:56
just call me and she gave me a phone
00:32:58
number and I called her and she answered
00:33:02
the phone and I said hiya Wanda and she
00:33:06
said yes are you red or you bill
00:33:09
and I said I'm bill and she started to
00:33:12
cry by 1976 bill to track down all of
00:33:17
his brothers and sisters except to
00:33:20
Jackie the sister would shared his
00:33:22
birthday an end his baby brother
00:33:26
the feeling of knowing that you have a
00:33:28
brother or a sister somewhere that you
00:33:31
can't locate is the driving force it
00:33:36
just makes you want to keep on looking
00:33:39
you don't give up in 1980 Bill's search
00:33:46
got another unexpected boost Ellen
00:33:49
Steinman the New York Children's Aid
00:33:51
Society found a phone number for Edie
00:33:56
on a Christmas Eve bill spoke to his
00:33:59
brother
00:34:00
Edie for the first time in 47 years when
00:34:05
I got the call from my brother and I
00:34:07
just couldn't believe that it actually
00:34:08
happened thank you and it's been just
00:34:10
been a great experience to have all of a
00:34:13
sudden with one phone call
00:34:14
I have 42 new relatives and being at
00:34:18
Christmas time I was a greatest
00:34:19
Christmas gift like again finally two
00:34:24
months ago the Harrington family
00:34:25
reunited for the first time all five
00:34:28

00:35:21

00:35:23
family but their joy is tempered their
00:35:25
sister Jackie remains missing when we
00:35:30
find Jackie and it'll be a completed
00:35:32
circle everything will be in its place
00:35:35
everybody will be where they belong I've
00:35:39
been looking for my sister for the last
00:35:41

00:35:57
one Sunday afternoon in Phoenix Arizona
00:35:59
a businessman named Angelo desiderio
00:36:02
paired a solitary lunch before he could
00:36:05
sit down to enjoy it he vanished 30
00:36:08
hours later and 400 miles away his
00:36:10
burned-out car was discovered no other
00:36:13
trace of Angelo desert areas ever been
00:36:16
found on the afternoon of June the 5th
00:36:26
1988 a prosperous businessman named
00:36:29
Angelo desert dari banished from his
00:36:30
Phoenix home nobody knows why or to
00:36:34
where he disappeared his friends and
00:36:36
family believed he met with foul play
00:36:38
some investigators think Angelo wanted
00:36:40
to disappear there is no conclusive
00:36:42
evidence either way only questions fifty
00:36:52
seven-year-old Angelo desiderio was a
00:36:54
devout Catholic who had once studied for
00:36:56
the priesthood he lived a quiet routine
00:36:58
existence with his parents and a Phoenix
00:37:00
suburb and there was a very ordered neat
00:37:04
individual very very meticulous and very
00:37:09
very neat individual a perfectionist in
00:37:12
its true sense of the word of
00:37:14
perfectionist angelo killed a small
00:37:18
fortune out of hard work he had several
00:37:20
close friends but never married
00:37:22
Angelo loved the finer things in life
00:37:24
and he supported this affluent lifestyle
00:37:27
by owning a shopping center and an
00:37:29
import store on the morning of Monday
00:37:33
June 6th a neighboring shop owner
00:37:35
discovered that Angelo store was closed
00:37:37
and no one was inside
00:37:42
one of Angelo's friends drove out to his
00:37:45
home to see if anything was wrong after
00:37:50
seeing certain things that disturbed me
00:37:53
like the alarm that was not on and other
00:37:57
things of that nature he went next door
00:38:00
and made the decision the phone 9-1-1
00:38:03
and get out of the house
00:38:10
[Music]
00:38:18
[Music]
00:38:20
inside Angela was nowhere to be found
00:38:24
the house was undisturbed apparently he
00:38:28
had been interrupted while preparing
00:38:30
lunch on the kitchen table Angelo had
00:38:40
laid out piles of bills as if preparing
00:38:42
to pay them
00:38:46
in the living room two new pairs of
00:38:49
pants were found near a shopping bag a
00:38:51
receipt inside the bag showed Angelo had
00:38:53
bought the pants at 12:47 the previous
00:38:56
afternoon
00:38:59
[Music]
00:39:06
when my brother disappeared on that
00:39:08
Sunday afternoon he left the house with
00:39:10
absolutely nothing didn't take a
00:39:11
toothbrush pair of slippers nothing
00:39:14
absolutely nothing the only thing that
00:39:16
we discovered that was missing was his
00:39:17
attache case some jewelry and money was
00:39:21
missing from the home but as far as any
00:39:23
other personal items everything was left
00:39:25
behind if we could find out why he left
00:39:28
in that hurry it might to give us a clue
00:39:30
as to where Angelo is in the garage
00:39:35
investigators discovered a telling clue
00:39:38
Angelo's car cover lay crumpled on the
00:39:41
floor Angelo was compulsively neat and
00:39:44
always folded the cover after removing
00:39:46
it a neighbor fueled police suspicion
00:39:51
when he said he had seen Angelo's
00:39:52
Cadillac speed off the Sunday he
00:39:54
disappeared it was very difficult to see
00:39:58
of course I couldn't see any facial
00:40:00
characteristics and it just appeared to
00:40:02
be a person taller than Angelo it wasn't
00:40:06
like Angelo to pull out without
00:40:08
acknowledging me he'd returned from out
00:40:12
of town just a few days before I'd given
00:40:14
him his mail and we spoke briefly Friday
00:40:16
night which was prior to this was on a
00:40:19
Sunday and it just all kinds of
00:40:22
questions you wonder why there is a
00:40:24
missing link and I wish I knew what it
00:40:26
was and I'm sure a lot of other people
00:40:28
do too

at 6:30 - on Monday evening only 30
00:40:37
hours after Angela disappeared
00:40:39
400 miles for Phoenix a 1985 Cadillac
00:40:43
was found a place in a San Diego parking
00:40:46
lot an accelerant had been used to set
00:40:48
the fire investigators traced the old
00:40:53
it was registered to Angelo desi dairy
00:40:59
when San Diego authorities examine the
00:41:01
car there were no personal belongings
00:41:03
inside they found no signs of forcible
00:41:06
entry the ignition was untampered with
00:41:09
there were no signs or indications of
00:41:11
any hot-wiring of any types the vehicle
00:41:14
was very very meticulously cleaned no
00:41:16
bugs no dirt anywhere on the front of
00:41:18
the vehicle as if it had just come from
00:41:20
a long journey from another state
00:41:22
washing a car and then burning it is
00:41:24
something that is a first for me in my
00:41:25
career I cannot conceive that he would
00:41:29
burn the car
00:41:30
it just seems incredible that this is
00:41:32
possible of my brother he's just it just
00:41:37
doesn't seem possible to me I just can't
00:41:39
I can't comprehend something like this
00:41:40
we looked in the trunk and found
00:41:42
absolutely nothing in that trunk that
00:41:44
would have been there other than the
00:41:45
jack no carpet no padding no spare tire
00:41:48
we processed that vehicle there were no
00:41:51
fibers there were no hairs there was
00:41:52
nothing in that trunk or anything that
00:41:54
we could discover that had been in that
00:41:56
trunk basically this tells us that there
00:41:58
could have been something in the vehicle
00:42:00
that was transported in a vehicle and
00:42:02
when it was taken out they took the
00:42:04
carpet in the padding and wrapped it all
00:42:05
in one unit and took everything out of
00:42:06
the vehicle including the spare tire
00:42:09

00:42:10
Phoenix Police retraced the drive to San
00:42:13
Diego stopping at gas stations along the
00:42:15
way nobody matching Angelo's description
00:42:19
had been seen and none of his credit
00:42:21
cards had been used in San Diego car
00:42:26
washes were checked on the slim chance
00:42:28
that someone would remember having seen
00:42:29
Angela or no one had but authorities did
00:42:34
find two witnesses who had seen the car
00:42:36
minutes before was torched
00:42:39
one saw a man resembling Angelo in front
00:42:42
of the Cadillac at the same time a woman
00:42:45
passing by also saw the man however
00:42:48
neither witness could conclusively
00:42:50
identify him as Angela we can narrow
00:42:55
that down to about five minutes prior to
00:42:58
the fire the results of our case rest on
00:43:02
who that person was it could possibly
00:43:07
close our case if it was Angelo standing
00:43:10
by that car in the disappearance of
00:43:13
Angelo desi Derry there are still many
00:43:15
perplexing questions
00:43:16
why would Angelo leave his home in such
00:43:19
a hurry without a visible struggle who
00:43:22
was it standing next to Angelo's car in
00:43:24
San Diego and why was his set on fire
00:43:27
and perhaps most importantly what was
00:43:30
the motive for his disappearance there
00:43:33
is no way knowing this man like I did
00:43:37
that I can even remotely tie him into
00:43:42
any illegal activity with any underworld
00:43:45
or anything criminal and he being
00:43:48
involved anything of this nature they
00:43:50
would cause him they have to possibly
00:43:52
leave or disappear no way at all there's
00:43:58
another life or there's another
00:43:59
dimension - Angelo that we've never been
00:44:03
able to find we have a gentleman who
00:44:05
would go out of his way for people
00:44:07
someone who was devoted to his family
00:44:09
and yet we have this whole case and all
00:44:15
do all the pieces they just don't fit
00:44:19
there's a piece missing somewhere and I
00:44:22
think that if if I could ever find that
00:44:25
piece I'd find Angela for over eight
00:44:29
months investigators and friends were
00:44:31
baffled as to the moody for Angelo's
00:44:33
disappearance
00:44:37
update on March 16th Phoenix police
00:44:40
charged a local resident Joe Camel with
00:44:42
conspiracy to commit armed robbery and
00:44:44
burglary on Angelo desiderio they
00:44:48
learned that Keller was a friend and
00:44:50
business associate of Angela and had
00:44:52
detailed information concerning his
00:44:54
disappearance joe callow told us that
00:44:58
all the information he had was told to
00:45:01
him by James majors James majors have
00:45:05
worked with Calhoun construction he is
00:45:07
currently in a California jail facing
00:45:09
several counts of murder
00:45:11
during the interview of of Joe gallo
00:45:14
he stated that majors went to the house
00:45:19
got into the house by ringing the
00:45:21
doorbell and asking for a glass of water
00:45:24
then took Angelo at gunpoint and robbed
00:45:29
the house he was taken out of the house
00:45:34
at that time by majors and driven out
00:45:37
into the desert
00:45:41
callow claims it's somewhere between
00:45:43
Phoenix and San Diego majors murdered
00:45:45
Angela and then placed the body in the
00:45:48
trunk of the Cadillac and continued on
00:45:50
toward San Diego the following morning
00:45:56
majors goes to a hardware store we're
00:46:01
not sure where we believe it's in some
00:46:03
small town between here in California
00:46:07
where he purchased a pick and a shovel
00:46:09
[Music]
00:46:14
Cannell claims that after buying a tools
00:46:16
majors told him that he had driven down
00:46:18
a desert back road to an area adjacent
00:46:20
to a rundown house he then buried Angelo
00:46:24
near a large tree
00:46:27
according to kal-el majors did a real
00:46:30
unique thing and that is as he's leaving
00:46:35
the gravesite he stopped and gave the
00:46:40
shoveling in the pit to the poor people
00:46:43
that lived and then that Shack the exit
00:46:48
the highway and drove him to California
00:46:52
[Music]
00:46:54
Joe Cala also told investigators that
00:46:57
majors had a storage locker
00:46:59
police searched the locker and recovered
00:47:01
property belonging to Angelo these items
00:47:04
were traced back to the desiderio
