May 22, 2019 / 47:29

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers drug smuggling operations, family secrets, and unsolved murders. Key stories include the drug smuggling tunnel in Douglas, Arizona, the search for a father, and the murder of Hilda Roche.

In May 1990, federal drug agents raided a concrete business in Douglas, Arizona, uncovering a sophisticated drug smuggling operation led by Rafael Camarena. The operation included a secret tunnel used to transport cocaine from Mexico into the U.S. Despite being under surveillance, Camarena managed to smuggle over a ton of cocaine, valued at over 100 million dollars, through a hidden compartment in his trucks.

The episode also features Jeannie Wagner, who seeks to find her biological father, Duncan, after discovering her mother, Patsy Summers, had kept the truth about her parentage hidden. Jeannie’s emotional journey reveals her mother's struggles and the impact of family secrets.

Another segment discusses the murder of Hilda Roche, who was killed shortly after meeting a mysterious man at a singles bar. Investigators believe this man may be a serial killer, as they connect him to multiple unsolved cases.

The episode concludes with a heartbreaking story about a baby boy, JJ, suffering from a mysterious illness. His mother, Jerry Graves, searches for her biological parents in hopes of uncovering medical history that could help her son.

for the past several years the United
00:02:19
States government is embarked on a
00:02:20
highly publicized war on drugs
00:02:23
sadly some experts and politicians
00:02:25
believe we might be losing that war due
00:02:27
in part to the extraordinary lengths
00:02:29
drug smugglers are willing to go they're
00:02:32
about to take you inside one of the most

00:02:45
97 miles south of Phoenix just a stone's

00:02:59
the Douglas have appeared the area in
00:03:00
one of the main conduits for cocaine
00:03:03
coming into the United States and for
00:03:05
that reason it's known as the cocaine
00:03:08
alley in the fall of 1988 a Mexican
00:03:14
national named Rafael Camarena began to
00:03:16
cross the border daily from Agua Prieta
00:03:18
entered Douglas her marina had purchased
00:03:22
a concrete mixing company and Douglas
00:03:25
was struggling to make a go of his new
00:03:26
business when he first bought the
00:03:32
business things weren't going that well
00:03:35
it wasn't successful we were paid on
00:03:42
Fridays and at times on Thursday she'd
00:03:47
be saying something to the effect of I
00:03:50
have no money what am I gonna do for
00:03:52
payroll tomorrow later mr. comedy and I
00:03:57
will come in and send hey I took care of
00:03:59
it
00:04:00
you know here's your paycheck he seemed
00:04:02
too relieved like you know I took a load
00:04:04
off within a few months karma Reyna had
00:04:09
secured agreements to supply concrete
00:04:11
for many of the municipal construction
00:04:13
projects and Douglas and I have spoken
00:04:18
to mr. camreta he he had told me that he
00:04:20
planned to be here for a number of years
00:04:23
[Applause]
00:04:25
he would check in on the business once
00:04:28
or twice a day he spent a lot of time in
00:04:30
Mexico I see him pursuing contracts over
00:04:33
in our Prieta but yes he was an on hands
00:04:36
type of business owner he could have
00:04:40
opened up a business anywhere in the
00:04:41
United States of America

00:04:46
in 1989 Camarena constructed a large
00:04:49
warehouse in Douglas at the same time
00:04:52
just 200 feet away in Agua Prieta he
00:04:55
built a four-bedroom ranch style home
00:04:57
the home located in a wealthy area of
00:05:00
Agua Prieta and all the amenities that
00:05:02
come with success
00:05:09
mr. Camarena seemed to be a good husband
00:05:13
and a good father this gentleman was a
00:05:17
type of person that you would ask to
00:05:19
join your local Lions Club he's a type
00:05:21
of person that that you would want to be
00:05:23
as your friend he was a type of person
00:05:26
that you would enjoy inviting over to
00:05:29
your house in reality Camarena's entire
00:05:38
life was nothing but a devious facade
00:05:41
created to cover up a very lucrative and
00:05:44
very illegal enterprise
00:05:49
u.s. customs officials received
00:05:51
information that Camarena was smuggling
00:05:53
drugs miss Holman Agua Prieta across the
00:05:56
border to his warehouse in Douglas
00:05:59
incredibly Camarena's business was
00:06:02
located one block away from the u.s.
00:06:04
customs headquarters early 1990 we
00:06:08
initiated 24-hour surveillance of the
00:06:11
Douglas ready-mix company I think we've
00:06:15
got something
00:06:16
agents staked out Camarena's business
00:06:18
for over two months
00:06:19
yes company all right
00:06:24
they became suspicious of a flatbed
00:06:27
truck that arrived and departed from a
00:06:29
new warehouse nearly every day on one
00:06:34
occasion we followed the tractor-trailer
00:06:36
rig from Douglas ready-mix to a rural
00:06:40
area outside of Phoenix Arizona
00:06:44
[Applause]
00:06:46
a special testicles comprised of us
00:06:48
customers and other law enforcement
00:06:50
officers raided a farm or Camarena's
00:06:52
truck had been seen agent seized over a
00:06:59
ton of nearly pure cocaine street value
00:07:02
over 100 million dollars the cocaine had
00:07:06
been transported inside a hidden
00:07:08
compartment beneath the trucks bed the
00:07:11
raid confirmed that the drugs had come
00:07:13
from Camarena's warehouse but agents
00:07:16
were baffled
00:07:17
Howard Camarena managed to smuggle drugs
00:07:20
into his warehouse which was being
00:07:21
watched around-the-clock by federal
00:07:23
agents just a block away we began
00:07:28
receiving bits and pieces of information
00:07:31
from a variety of sources
00:07:32
concerning a the existence of a tunnel
00:07:35
in the Douglas area
00:07:40
two days later ages from the United
00:07:43
States and Mexico launched simultaneous
00:07:45
raids on Camarena's warehouse in Douglas
00:07:47
and his new home in Agua Prieta
00:07:51
[Music]
00:07:54
Mexican authorities arrested two men who
00:07:56
claim to be gardeners Camarena and his
00:07:59
family had fled there was no visible
00:08:04
evidence of a tunnel at the Douglas
00:08:09
warehouse US agents at first found
00:08:11
nothing unusual then they came upon a
00:08:14
large floor drain
00:08:24
[Music]
00:08:29
we found out about a five and a half
00:08:32
diameter shaft that went 30 feet into
00:08:34
the ground and at the bottom of the
00:08:37
shaft we found the tunnel itself
00:08:39
[Music]
00:08:44
this is the actual tunnel through which
00:08:46
between 15 and 25 tons of cocaine may
00:08:50
have been smuggled the execution was
00:08:53
really very good floor the side walls
00:08:56
and the roof were all concrete the
00:09:01
tunnel itself extended 200 plus feet
00:09:04
into Mexico when authorities uncovered
00:09:08
the tunnels entrance beneath Camarena's
00:09:09
home it became clear that this was no
00:09:12
ordinary drug smuggling operation it was
00:09:17
something right out of a James Bond
00:09:19
movie
00:09:20
[Music]
00:09:32
hydraulic pedestals lifted the pool
00:09:34
table at a 2-ton section of concrete
00:09:36
floor to expose the entrance huge
00:09:40
amounts of drugs could be stored below
00:09:42
until they were ready to be moved across
00:09:44
the border
00:09:46
[Music]
00:09:47
the drugs were transported on a
00:09:50
specially designed cart at the Douglas
00:09:54
and the custom-made hoist lifted the
00:09:56
illegal cargo into the warehouse
00:09:58
[Music]
00:10:05
workers packed the cocaine bricks into
00:10:07
the false bottom of the truck
00:10:12
the contraband was driven out right
00:10:14
under the noses of US customs officials
00:10:18
come on his choice of a building supply
00:10:21
company in a cement company was very
00:10:23
good in that it gave him access to
00:10:25
trucks and could be used to transport
00:10:27
the narcotics from the border area to
00:10:30
distribution points in the United States
00:10:32
in my 18 years with the Customs Service
00:10:36
is one of the most amazing
00:10:38
investigations I've ever encountered the
00:10:41
sophistication of the of the smugglers
00:10:44
the the construction of this tunnel
00:10:46
itself just demonstrates to what
00:10:48
extremes these organizations will go to
00:10:51
it just totally surprised me because
00:10:54
here's a man that moved a hundred
00:10:56
million dollars of cocaine illegally
00:11:00
into the United States and yet he was
00:11:02
fine for every penny that he made at
00:11:04
Douglas ready-mix mr. Camarena didn't
00:11:07
seem at all like a drug dealer he didn't
00:11:10
dress like a drug dealer he didn't come
00:11:13
across
00:11:14
personality-wise as a drug dealer he
00:11:17
just seemed like a good family man

00:11:49
recently we featured the case of 46 year
00:11:52
old Dennis - pew lauded by Michigan
00:11:54
authorities for the brutal murder of his
00:11:56
ex-wife Maryland Depew was last seen on
00:11:59
the day of the murder driving his
00:12:01
customized van at around 8:30 on the
00:12:06
night of our broadcast a woman who asked
00:12:08
that we call her Mary arrived at her
00:12:10
home outside Dallas Texas Mary's
00:12:13
boyfriend Hank queen was already home
00:12:16
his van was parked in the driveway
00:12:20
which was out of the ordinary because he
00:12:23
usually kept it inside the garage he
00:12:32
told me that his mother was very ill and
00:12:36
then he nae needed to make an emergency
00:12:38
I'm gonna drive up here could you make
00:12:40
me some sandwiches that I could take on
00:12:42
it's a really long drive I was sure that
00:12:44
something else must really be going on
00:12:47
but I didn't know what he was getting
00:12:54
clothes out of the closet clothes out of
00:12:56
some drawers gathering up some of his
00:12:59
personal items it's same time giving me
00:13:02
instructions on preparing some food for
00:13:06
him to take on the long trip me hug he
00:13:26
just gave me a little peck of a kiss and
00:13:31
I gave you the big hug
00:13:32
and said goodbye to him I realized that
00:13:39
something was troubling him and I knew I
00:13:42
would never see him again
00:13:45
[Music]
00:13:47
later that night Barry was shocked to
00:13:50
learn that her boyfriend had Queen was
00:13:52
really Dennis de PUE and that he had
00:13:54
just been featured on unsolved mysteries
00:13:58
on Easter Sunday of last year
00:14:01
Dennis tip you ride that his ex-wife
00:14:03
Marilyn's home to pick up their children
00:14:05
for a scheduled visit Dennis erupted in
00:14:10
a violent rage he accused Maryland of
00:14:13
destroying his life and turning their
00:14:15
children against him the next day
00:14:22
Maryland depew's body was discovered in
00:14:24
a roadside ditch nine miles from her
00:14:26
home she had been shot once in the back
00:14:28
of the head
00:14:31
it was so brutal and premeditated that
00:14:35
makes you so angry if she had been
00:14:38
killed in an automobile accident you
00:14:41
could get over that but not this
00:14:47
for nearly a year Denis Tipu's
00:14:49
whereabouts remained a mystery until the
00:14:51
night of our broadcast
00:14:54
looking back on it now I'm sure he was
00:14:57
watching and I think that he was
00:15:01
deliberately keeping
00:15:04
attention distracted in the kitchen so
00:15:07
that I wouldn't see the same and so that
00:15:09
he could leave
00:15:12
a friend of Mary's called our telecenter
00:15:14
and provided authorities with a Texas
00:15:16
license plate number of Dennis two pews
00:15:18
van four hours later the pews life came
00:15:22
to a violent end just across the
00:15:24
louisiana mississippi state border a
00:15:29
louisiana state trooper spotted depew's
00:15:31
van they attempted to pull him over he
00:15:34
led police on a 15 mile high speed chase
00:15:38
and broke through police barricades I
00:15:43
told the David agency if the van refused
00:15:47
to stop to shoot a tire over the front
00:15:49
time and they missed the front tire but
00:15:53
to get both back won he traveled about
00:15:55
half a mile and just went going to
00:15:58
felony stop after firing two shots
00:16:01
through his windshield at deputies and
00:16:03
another through an open window the pew
00:16:05
turned his gun on himself and took his
00:16:08
own life it was it was a funny feeling
00:16:11
to to realize that the night before that
00:16:14
you'd been watching this man that he was
00:16:16
wanted for murder someplace and then
00:16:20
you walk up to the van and you recognize
00:16:21
him as being the person that was on
00:16:23
unsolved mysteries did it's a funny
00:16:25
feeling but I think he intended to die
00:16:27
whether he had to do it by his own hands
00:16:30
or where he can get us to kill him
00:16:31
otherwise he would have stopped and we
00:16:34
forgot command of the van alive and
00:16:36
there never been the shots fired while
00:16:40
living as a fugitive Dennis de PUE sent
00:16:42
a chilling letter to several friends
00:16:44
tried to justify his ex-wife's death he
00:16:47
wrote an eye for an eye a tooth for a
00:16:50
tooth alive for a lie a life for a life
00:16:54
at the time Dennis de PUE had no idea
00:16:57
just how prophetic those words would be
00:17:02

00:17:10
Jeanne Wagner was born in 1959 into a
00:17:14
typical blue-collar household her father
00:17:17
was a construction worker her mother a
00:17:19
secretary and a doctor's office
00:17:22
jeanne was a first of three children and
00:17:25
enjoyed a healthy normal childhood at
00:17:28
least by outward appearances from a very
00:17:32
early age I felt very different and
00:17:36
[Music]
00:17:37
separated from my family I felt like I
00:17:41
didn't look like anybody and for a while
00:17:44
there I thought well you know maybe I
00:17:45
was adopted
00:17:47
and no one intentionally made me feel
00:17:49
that way I don't think that it was just
00:17:51
a knowledge I had that was I guess in my
00:17:54
subconscious consciously you know it was
00:17:58
you know a family a normal family but
00:18:00
there was something different
00:18:02
[Music]
00:18:05
many families seem to have their share
00:18:07
of untold tales dark disturbing secrets
00:18:11
that are hidden away buried and
00:18:12
hopefully forgotten but occasionally
00:18:15
these unpleasant ghosts will rise once
00:18:17
again with far-reaching consequences in
00:18:20
El Paso Texas Jeanne Wagner recently
00:18:22
discovered her family's tragic secret a
00:18:25
secret which has led Jeanne on an
00:18:27
emotional journey through her mother's
00:18:29
painful past Jeannie's mother
00:18:34
Patsy summers was just 17 years old when
00:18:36
she married she was shy private had been
00:18:40
raised in a strict home my mother was a
00:18:45
very devoutly religious Catholic I had
00:18:51
perfect dedicate and was very concerned
00:18:55
about her image to other people but
00:18:58
there was something within my mother
00:19:00
that prevented her from being a whole
00:19:04
person
00:19:04
there were times my mother was very
00:19:07
happy very carefree and so much fun to
00:19:13
be with but then there were times where
00:19:15
she was very very sad
00:19:20
even as a child
00:19:21
jeanny suspected that her mother was
00:19:23
tormented by some private demon in 1973
00:19:27
when Jeannie was 13
00:19:29
Patsy summers attempted to commit
00:19:31
suicide by slitting her wrists eight
00:19:35
years later
00:19:36
Patsy entered a highway against traffic
00:19:38
and smashed head-on into an approaching
00:19:41
car she died 10 days later
00:19:54
hello shortly after her mother's death
00:19:58
Jeanne called her younger sister and was
00:20:00
dealt another startling blow her sister
00:20:04
had found a diary which revealed the
00:20:05
source of their mother's inner pain
00:20:07
think you better come over the Mangini
00:20:09
knew as her father was not her father at
00:20:12
all there's a diary of mothers I want
00:20:14
you to read when I read the diary It was
00:20:18
as if all of us said and all the things
00:20:21
that had transpired in my life and in my
00:20:24
mother's life and in my life the family
00:20:27
life that I had known everything all of
00:20:31
a sudden made sense in the diary Patsy
00:20:36
had described the incredible predicament
00:20:38
she had gotten into when she was 17 in
00:20:43
1958
00:20:44
Patsy summers was living at home with
00:20:46
her mother and younger brother
00:20:47
[Music]
00:20:49
she was an obedient daughter who
00:20:51
excelled in school and attended church
00:20:53
regularly our mother had very high
00:21:03
standards she came from a Catholic
00:21:06
background and we had a very Catholic
00:21:09
upbringing we went to parochial schools
00:21:12
and our home was one where we went to
00:21:14
church every Sunday and that was very
00:21:17
very important to our mother she set a
00:21:21
good example and and she did expect you
00:21:25
know she expected us to follow the
00:21:27
things that were right
00:21:31
my mother had been going with a boy off
00:21:34
and on for about a year her mother and
00:21:37
her brothers and sister liked him a lot
00:21:40
they thought he was very responsible and
00:21:44
very polite and he drove a nice car back
00:21:49
then that was real important and they
00:21:53
had fought off and on through their
00:21:56
relationship the dinery detail how pets
00:22:01
he had gone to a local park one day
00:22:02
after an argument with her boyfriend
00:22:05
there she met a young enlisted man
00:22:07
stationed at nearby Fort Bliss
00:22:09
his name was Duncan hello do you mind if
00:22:18
I sit down
00:22:25
I'm Duncan Patricia Patsy was
00:22:30
immediately smitten by this handsome
00:22:32
soldier who seemed so gentle and
00:22:34
understanding it's pretty come here to
00:22:39
think soon they were seeing each other
00:22:42
on a regular basis
00:22:46
my mother talked to him a lot and
00:22:48
confided in him and she thought of
00:22:51
Duncan as a very kind person and even
00:22:56
stated that of all the people that she
00:22:59
had known that he was the kindest person
00:23:03
she had ever met I'll see you tomorrow
00:23:10
by
00:23:16
[Music]
00:23:24
in August of 1958
00:23:26
Patsy summers turned 17 Duncan threw her
00:23:30
a surprise birthday party inviting a
00:23:32
small select group of friends by now
00:23:41
Patsy was living a lie keeping her
00:23:44
relationship with Duncan hidden from her
00:23:46
boyfriend and her family what happened
00:23:57
I'm sorry the bus the bus must have got
00:23:59
there a little bit early I was just a
00:24:01
little bit late I won't let it happen
00:24:03
again
00:24:04
hi you were right Patsy and Duncan
00:24:08
continued their secret liaisons
00:24:09
throughout the summer and into the fall
00:24:16
in October
00:24:17
Patsy panicked when she discovered that
00:24:19
she was pregnant her boyfriend believed
00:24:23
that he was the father I think she was
00:24:28
concerned with fear fear that her family
00:24:32
would think badly of her it was her
00:24:35
belief that it was just unforgivable and
00:24:38
she never wanted to disappoint her
00:24:40
mother her mother was very important to
00:24:42
her and she did she says there was no
00:24:46
way I could ever tell my mother in a
00:24:48
million years my problem
00:24:54
Patsey was forced to make an
00:24:56
excruciating decision Duncan had
00:24:58
accepted full responsibility for the
00:25:00
pregnancy ordered to marry her but Patsy
00:25:04
opted for pleasing her family let's see
00:25:21
what is it don't be upset but we can see
00:25:24
children
00:25:26
she didn't feel that she could change
00:25:30
some things that were already set in
00:25:33
motion which were that that she was to
00:25:35
be married and she was to be married to
00:25:37
someone that was known and accepted by
00:25:40
her family
00:25:43
given the times and also given the kind
00:25:47
of religious training that we had I can
00:25:50
see how she made the choice yes the pain
00:25:55
of Patsy's dilemma was exposed in a
00:25:57
diary entry I had to do it I had to
00:26:02
please my mother that was the most
00:26:05
important thing in the world there was
00:26:09
no other way you Patricia and summers
00:26:15
take this man to be your lawfully wedded
00:26:18
husband to have and to hold to love and
00:26:22
to honor on November 11th 1958 the Patsy
00:26:26
and her boyfriend were married for as
00:26:28
long as you both shall live
00:26:29
only the tool will do that Patsy was
00:26:31
pregnant
00:26:33
only Patsy knew who the real father was
00:26:36
you may kiss the bride no one suspected
00:26:41
a pregnancy no one it was just a wedding
00:26:45
and and it was lovely
00:26:48
the knife at my sister went into labor
00:26:51
she said to me tell mother I'm sorry and
00:27:02
what I realized was that she had been
00:27:05
pregnant before she was married but I
00:27:10
certainly didn't realize that it went
00:27:12
any further than that Jeannie was born
00:27:18
seven months after the wedding in her
00:27:21
diary
00:27:21
Patsy had described how she prayed for a
00:27:23
child with blue eyes like those of her
00:27:25
new husband
00:27:26
Patsy received her wish my firm belief
00:27:32
is that secrets only cause people harm
00:27:34
and caused a lot of suffering and that's
00:27:39
why for me the truth has to come out and
00:27:42
I have to know who Duncan is the night
00:27:47
the genies story aired a woman named
00:27:50
Suzanne Gilmore was watching our
00:27:51
broadcast at her home in Lake Wylie
00:27:53
South Carolina at the time Susan's
00:27:56
husband Duncan was fast asleep Jeannie's
00:27:59
mother had written in her diary that he
00:28:02
was the sweetest kindest person that she
00:28:05
had ever met I just said that's my
00:28:07
Duncan I knew that it was my Duncan and
00:28:10
the next thing I know my wife woke me up
00:28:13
and she said were you ever stationed in
00:28:17
El Paso Texas at Fort Bliss when you
00:28:19
were in the Army and I said yeah she
00:28:22
said were you there in 1958 and I said
00:28:25
yeah I was there in 1958 and she said
00:28:28
did you ever know Patsy Somers and I
00:28:32
said yeah I know
00:28:32
I knew Patsy Somers did you sleep with
00:28:35
her and he said what what what he just
00:28:38
kind of came awake and I said it's very
00:28:41
important did you sleep with her and he
00:28:43
said oh yeah
00:28:45
she said congratulations you have a
00:28:48
daughter and she's looking for you and
00:28:50
he just came awake like it shot it was
00:28:53
like she's looking for me and I said yes
00:28:56
as soon as I heard some of the details I
00:29:00
knew me they she's my daughter and they
00:29:02
don't want to say it was matter-of-fact
00:29:05
but I just know that she was my daughter
00:29:08
and that we had to be together and we
00:29:10
had to see her and I had to respond nine
00:29:15
days and dozens of phone calls later
00:29:18
Duncan Gilmore and his wife Suzanne
00:29:20
arrived in Houston Texas
00:29:21
on May 3rd 1991 father and daughter met
00:29:25
for the first time in their lives
00:29:28
[Music]
00:29:33
when I hiked my dad it was a combination
00:29:36
of being really really happy but also
00:29:41
there was a little sadness there that so
00:29:46
many years have gone by and that we've
00:29:49
missed out on each other's lives I will
00:29:56
always remember
00:29:58
Ginny coming to the door and for the
00:30:00
first time seeing my daughter and I'm
00:30:02
holding her the day was made even more
00:30:06
special when Duncan met his only
00:30:08
grandchildren Joshua and Justin for the
00:30:11
first time when I saw my boys playing
00:30:16
catch with their grandpa it it just felt
00:30:21
right
00:30:22
they needed a grandpa and I can't think
00:30:26
of a better grandpa for them to have
00:30:30
[Music]
00:30:31
never could I have hoped in a million
00:30:36
years or prayed a thousand prayers for
00:30:39
this to turn out as well as it has
00:30:42
and he's turned out to be everything
00:30:44
that I thought he was going to be now
00:30:46
you doing tomorrow and the day after her
00:30:50
I'll now have a dad who loves me and
00:30:53
wants to be a part of my life when we
00:31:01
return a chance meeting at a singles bar
00:31:03
leads to murder
00:31:05
[Music]
00:31:20
excuse me say on March 25th 1982 43
00:31:29
year-old divorcee Hilda Roche met a man
00:31:32
at a fashionable singles bar at
00:31:33
Alexandria Virginia crowded here tonight
00:31:39
it's Friday night it's always crowded
00:31:40
night
00:31:41
I haven't seen you in here you work
00:31:44
around here I work for the military
00:31:48
intelligence I'd do some contract work
00:31:53
for the government do you really yeah
00:31:56
Hildur later told friends that she had
00:31:58
dinner with a man and planned on seeing
00:32:00
him again
00:32:01
but oddly she never told anyone his name
00:32:06
Hilda had said that the guy was single
00:32:10
he was attractive he had a lot of money
00:32:13
and she was impressed but he was driving
00:32:16
this beautiful car I started to tell her
00:32:23
don't believe everything this guy's
00:32:25
telling him the car is probably rented
00:32:29
anybody can make up a big story you
00:32:32
don't know anything about him
00:32:34
watch out one week later the nude body
00:32:39
of a woman was found in a wooded area
00:32:41
near an elementary school she had been
00:32:43
murdered execution-style there were
00:32:46
signs of sexual assault police had no
00:32:48
idea who the victim was
00:32:52
[Music]
00:32:55
hello everybody here County police there
00:33:00
anyone here
00:33:04
four days later investigators searched
00:33:07
Hilda rachets townhouse after co-workers
00:33:09
have reported her missing
00:33:16
I got a wallet here in the living
00:33:19
officers found Hilda's wallet
00:33:23
hey Lenny yeah hold on just a second
00:33:26
we've just identified our victim got her
00:33:28
picture on her driver's license right
00:33:30
here authorities now knew that Hilda
00:33:32
Roche was a woman who had been found
00:33:37
I'd like you to go ahead and do a 360 of
00:33:40
the room get the bed evidence and
00:33:43
Hilda's bedroom to confirm her she had
00:33:45
been sexually molested for here and he's
00:33:48
a faith air flows over the bed and the
00:33:51
whole bedroom was in disarray and we
00:33:53
found her blouse and a pair of slacks
00:33:55
and some pantyhose and some adhesive
00:33:58
tape in that's indicative of a struggle
00:34:03
going on there and other evidence that
00:34:06
we located in the room also indicated
00:34:09
that some type of sexual activity took
00:34:11
place
00:34:14
because there were no signs of forced
00:34:16
entry at the apartment detectives
00:34:18
concluded that Hilda Roche was murdered
00:34:21
by someone she knew most homicide
00:34:26
detectives agree that the first 48 hours
00:34:28
of a murder investigation of the most
00:34:30
crucial beyond that point leaves grow
00:34:33
cold and suspects disappear in this case
00:34:36
it took four days just to identify Hilda
00:34:38
Roche and more than three months to zero
00:34:41
in on a suspect a man authorities now
00:34:43
believe may be a serial killer on
00:34:50
detectives interviewed Hilda Rowe Shay's
00:34:51
friends they learned about the
00:34:53
mysterious man she had met at the
00:34:55
singles bar just one week before her
00:34:57
death hell they had told her friends
00:35:00
that fellow was from Florida
00:35:03
I drove a nice car he was a consultant
00:35:06
for the government and that he lived in
00:35:08
these apartments over and Aleksandra as
00:35:10
a matter of fact she told her that she
00:35:12
even went over to the apartment that
00:35:15
evening the 1400 unit apartment complex
00:35:20
was the only clue to the man's identity
00:35:24
investigators searched through files and
00:35:26
files of lease agreements dating back
00:35:28
three years they were looking for any
00:35:30
resident pastor present who matched the
00:35:33
description of the man Hilda had met we
00:35:37
went through a processing 25 to 30
00:35:38
thousand files and out of that 25 30
00:35:42
thousand we come up with 32 possible
00:35:44
names that fit the profile of the person
00:35:48
that Hilda
00:35:49
had described to her friend detective
00:35:53
Cahill was confident that his team was
00:35:55
closing in all they needed was one piece
00:35:58
of evidence that could link any of the
00:36:00
32 suspects with Hilda Roche
00:36:04
three months into the investigation they
00:36:06
got the break they needed my wallets
00:36:10
missing excuse me
00:36:11
my wallets God it's its authorities
00:36:15
learned that Hilda had lost her wallet
00:36:17
on the very night she had met the man
00:36:29
some unknown reason
00:36:31
Hilda's mysterious suitor insisted that
00:36:33
he be contacted if the wallet was found
00:36:38
[Music]
00:36:41
a few days later the restaurant found
00:36:46
Hilda rachets wallet
00:36:47
yes sir may I help you yeah I called
00:36:50
before you found the lady's wallet
00:36:51
Tim blowing the hell door O'Shea we're
00:36:54
here to pick him up okay let me check in
00:36:56
lost and found she had called and said
00:37:00
that he was gonna bring the wallet back
00:37:02
and I was saying something wrong I'm
00:37:04
here why did he go to the management to
00:37:07
find out about the wallet why did
00:37:11
management call him when they found the
00:37:14
wallet my first impression was the guy's
00:37:17
putting you on sir I did find Hilda
00:37:21
rachets Blanca
00:37:22
could I see your driver's license the
00:37:25
restaurant manager remembered little
00:37:26
about the man then she agreed to undergo
00:37:29
hypnosis it paid off she recalled a
00:37:32
phone number
00:37:33
[Music]
00:37:35
the hypnotist told us that this would
00:37:39
not be the exact phone number he said
00:37:41
now the most of the numbers are gonna be
00:37:43
the same they're gonna be right he says
00:37:45
but they might be transposed or
00:37:47
something you're gonna have to work with
00:37:48
it on detectives compared the phone
00:37:51
number with those of the 32 apartment
00:37:54
residents they came up with a nearly
00:37:55
exact match the number belonged to 38
00:38:00
year-old Gregory Barker Barker had moved
00:38:02
out of the apartment complex a short
00:38:04
time after Hilda's murder
00:38:08
so we immediately began to do a
00:38:11
background investigation on mr. Barker
00:38:14
we were not able to find any particular
00:38:18
company or government agency that he had
00:38:22
applied to or even worked for as a
00:38:24
matter of fact we don't believe that he
00:38:25
worked for any agency up here we believe
00:38:28
that what he told the people at the
00:38:33
apartment and what he was telling people
00:38:34
he met was all a scam made up in his own
00:38:38
mind
00:38:40
Gregory Barker is a decorated Vietnam
00:38:42
veteran he served two tours the second
00:38:45
as an army intelligence officer he is a
00:38:47
voracious reader of spy novels police
00:38:50
theorized at Barker's mental state may
00:38:52
have deteriorated to a point where he
00:38:54
now believes that he himself is a master
00:38:57
spy
00:38:57
[Music]
00:39:03
based on lockers psychological profile
00:39:06
and crime scene evidence detective Cal
00:39:08
has developed a chilling scenario of
00:39:10
what happened the night Hilda Roche was
00:39:12
murdered
00:39:15
Gregg oh I thought you were gonna come
00:39:20
tomorrow my wallet thank you I believe
00:39:24
that the Gregg's Margaret came over to
00:39:27
the house and the intention of returning
00:39:30
the wallet to Hilda and possibly
00:39:32
something else in mind
00:39:34
fine yes coming I'm coming I'm sorry
00:39:40
[Music]
00:39:42
during his visit withheld that he had an
00:39:46
altercation a violent altercation with
00:39:48
her down in the living room and sometime
00:39:51
later up in the bedroom
00:39:52
her clothes were taken off and a sexual
00:39:56
activity occurred there he at that time
00:40:01
I took her against her will out of the
00:40:04
house down to the school which is
00:40:06
located about nine and a half miles away
00:40:08
from the house
00:40:11
[Music]
00:40:20
get out she was taken out of the vehicle
00:40:27
and she was naked and led up the path
00:40:30
about a hundred and fifty feet to a
00:40:32
wooded area between a housing
00:40:34
development and school at which time he
00:40:43
just brutally murdered her with the
00:40:47
gunshot to the head
00:40:57
from during a background investigation
00:40:59
on mr. Parker we don't believe that this
00:41:01
is the first murder that he committed we
00:41:05
don't believe that this was the last
00:41:06
murder he committed we believe that he
00:41:09
could be responsible for numerous
00:41:11
murders we feel that possibly he could
00:41:14
even be a serial murderer we're very
00:41:18
sure of the fact that he's smart and
00:41:21
he's very dangerous
00:41:31
[Music]
00:41:44
next the heartbreaking story of a 10
00:41:47
month old boy who was fighting for his
00:41:48
life perhaps you can help in the past we
00:42:01
have brought you many stories of lost
00:42:03
love often about adopted children
00:42:05
looking for their biological parents
00:42:07
this is a very different kind of lost
00:42:10
love story a young woman in Idaho was
00:42:13
searching for her birth parents not for
00:42:15
herself alone but also for her son Jerry
00:42:19
graves clings to the fragile hope that
00:42:21
her background holds a key to a
00:42:22
mysterious illness that threatens her
00:42:25
baby's life Jerry and John Gray is
00:42:30
married a 1989 together they are raising
00:42:33
Jerry's two daughters from a previous
00:42:35
marriage in 1990 Jerry and John had a
00:42:39
son JJ when we brought JJ home from the
00:42:43
hospital I noticed he was convulsing
00:42:46
which scared me really bad because I
00:42:49
thought he was gonna die
00:42:49
I really thought that was my first
00:42:51
thought that he was dying Jerry and John
00:42:55
took JJ to specialists after a
00:42:57
specialist no one could pinpoint the
00:42:59
cause of JJ's problems but he continued
00:43:02
to have as many as 50 seizures a day
00:43:05
throughout JJ's first six months of life
00:43:09
he would get to where he would have so
00:43:12
many seizures in the day he wouldn't eat
00:43:14
we're talking he would he would eat
00:43:17
maybe two ounces a day his body couldn't
00:43:19
keep keep up on just that he would
00:43:22
dehydrate very easily we were down to I
00:43:24
was feeding JJ with a medicine dropper
00:43:26
and it wouldn't it wouldn't work and
00:43:29
when he would get dehydrated or anything
00:43:31
like that we were back in the hospital I
00:43:33
would say that the initial guarded
00:43:36
optimism we had when he did have fairly
00:43:38
normal tone and initial muscle activity
00:43:41
in the first few months of life has
00:43:43
become much more pessimistic each time
00:43:45
the doctors give me a little bit of bad
00:43:47
news they still tell me there's hope
00:43:51
he has voluntary movement when he's
00:43:53
laying down and you'll tickle his foot
00:43:55
he will move his foot so that you no
00:43:57
longer can tickle it and that is
00:43:59
something that every parent with a
00:44:01
normal healthy baby takes for granted
00:44:03
they don't know how thrilled I was when
00:44:07
my son kicked his covers off of himself
00:44:10
I I was ready to throw a party
00:44:13
when JJ was eight none seen his muscular
00:44:16
development stalled at the level of a
00:44:18
newborns even after a myriad of tests
00:44:21
doctors could not determine what was
00:44:23
causing JJ seizures or his slow
00:44:26
development Jerry and John began to
00:44:32
consider the remote possibility that
00:44:34
JJ's illness might be genetic Jerry had
00:44:37
been adopted as an infant but had never
00:44:39
before thought about tracking down her
00:44:41
birth parents I am searching to find my
00:44:46
biological parents there is a slim
00:44:49
chance that by knowing my medical
00:44:53
history maybe they could possibly put
00:44:57
something together as to what is
00:44:58
happening with JJ Jerry has few clues
00:45:02
about her past she was born Kelly Marie
00:45:05
Macmillan on November 7th 1963 in
00:45:08
Ventura County California her parents
00:45:11
were not married her mother hoped to
00:45:14
become a nurse her father was of Irish
00:45:16
descent Gerry's adoption records are
00:45:19
legally sealed so she knows little else
00:45:21
about her biological parents and remains
00:45:23
apprehensive about the prospect of
00:45:25
meeting them
00:45:27
I know things might be devastating to me
00:45:31
I know some things might affect me wrong
00:45:34
but I'm going to forgo that it's if
00:45:37
there's a chance for JJ I can go through
00:45:40
anything

I have had a doctor coming in Tommy that
00:45:55
my son wasn't going to live but in the
00:45:57
same breath that doctor told me that my
00:46:01
son has a chance
00:46:04
and even though he may have problems and
00:46:08
he may not be normal
00:46:10
he is my baby and he's my son there is
00:46:16
an answer out there yeah we will find it
