is now 27 years old perhaps tonight
00:02:29
she'll be able to understand the agony
00:02:31
her birth mother went through on a
00:02:40
chilly spring evening in 1964 Delia
00:02:43
Faison II sat in her favorite London pub
00:02:45
waiting for her boyfriend
00:02:47
even though Delia was only 18 her life
00:02:50
was at a crossroads she was three months
00:02:54
pregnant and felt that her boyfriend was
00:02:56
the only person she could turn to love

00:03:08
but something important I need to talk
00:03:09
about you I don't but I need to talk to
00:03:13
you it's important
00:03:18
I can't even bring myself to say it
00:03:22
I'm pregnant kidding me
00:03:28
sure it's been three months
00:03:33
I don't need elite if they know I
00:03:38
haven't told them
00:03:42
it's no fun what do you mean I won't
00:03:48
have it
00:03:48
it's definitely not mine it's yours what
00:03:51
do you think I need Europe don't to do
00:03:56
with it if you say it's mine
00:04:00
would you say all my friends told me
00:04:01
dealing with you what my man leg to
00:04:04
stand on
00:04:07
and I see it yes I was devastated
00:04:12
I mean I wanted to marry him I mean I
00:04:15
loved him but he just didn't want the
00:04:18
responsibility of it that was just the
00:04:21
way they did things then they just left
00:04:24
the responsibility with the girl
00:04:28
[Music]
00:04:33
after that the first fear obviously was
00:04:36
to tell my dad that I was pregnant I
00:04:38
mean I thought well I'm either gonna
00:04:41
tell him and he's gonna kill me on the
00:04:43
spot or I don't know what's gonna happen
00:04:47
Delia's father an Italian immigrant ran
00:04:50
a highly successful restaurant in London
00:04:52
he was a strict Roman Catholic who ruled
00:04:55
his business and his family with an iron
00:04:58
hand he was a sort of man it was always
00:05:02
on a short fuse everybody was frightened
00:05:04
of him
00:05:05
and I was absolutely petrified to tell
00:05:07
him
00:05:10
for seven agonizing months Delia hid her
00:05:13
pregnancy with corsets and loose clothes
00:05:16
finally wish you could hide it no longer
00:05:18
she begged a friend to break the news to
00:05:21
her parents
00:05:38
lots
00:05:43
you are so common you disgust me
00:05:51
who was it tell you you can do what you
00:05:57
like but I'm not gonna tell you you've
00:06:02
done the worst thing possible you will
00:06:07
tell no one and you'll have nothing to
00:06:10
say about this I'll take care of this
00:06:13
problem can't we keep the baby we could
00:06:17
raise it like it was our own solo
00:06:19
daughter just like it was one of our own
00:06:21
I'd rather jump off a bridge then take
00:06:24
care of this baby I don't even want to
00:06:26
smell it
00:06:33
nothing really after that day was
00:06:35
discussed with me but obviously my dad
00:06:40
was discussed it with my mum
00:06:42
as regards to what to do with me and
00:06:44
then I think it was only a matter of
00:06:46
about maybe a week couple of weeks and
00:06:49
he just came home and announced that I
00:06:52
was going to this place wherever it was
00:06:55
we will tell our friends that you were
00:06:58
going up north to the country for a few
00:06:59
months to spend some time with your
00:07:01
friend iris
00:07:06
say goodbye tomorrow
00:07:13
I know
00:07:19
I wanted to keep my baby you know even
00:07:23
though he was sending me off to this
00:07:25
wherever I thought well maybe once I
00:07:28
have the baby he's gonna feel different
00:07:36
Delia's father banished her to the
00:07:38
Loreto convent 30 miles north of London
00:07:40
the convent served as a home for unwed
00:07:43
mothers and facilitated adoptions as
00:07:46
well
00:07:48
when we drove up to the convent I just
00:07:50
felt the I couldn't believe it they just
00:07:54
he just put me there
00:07:56
we've been expecting you Delia we're
00:07:58
glad every witness
00:07:59
you know you've you Cringer taking your
00:08:01
dog to the pound because you don't wanna
00:08:03
leave him there and yet you just easily
00:08:06
just took me there and and left me and
00:08:10
that was my father
00:08:11
[Music]
00:08:15
in my eyes it was like a prison really
00:08:17
you were there for a certain time and
00:08:20
you couldn't go home until that time
00:08:23
having completed all the expectant
00:08:28
mothers were signed chores those closest
00:08:32
to term are given the most strenuous
00:08:33
work because the nuns believed it helped
00:08:36
the girls deliver on time
00:08:42
I suppose they see is there they're
00:08:46
doing the job and you're there for a
00:08:48
certain purpose that is to have your
00:08:50
baby and then goodbye and then the next
00:08:52
one comes in
00:08:56
[Music]
00:09:01
on November 2nd 1964 Delia gave birth to
00:09:05
a daughter named her Michelle Delia was
00:09:09
allowed to see the baby only four times
00:09:11
a day and then for only half an hour
00:09:15
they didn't like you to see a baby other
00:09:18
than the feeding times and the change in
00:09:20
times because the more you saw the baby
00:09:23
the more you held it you are more likely
00:09:25
to bond to the baby so when it came for
00:09:28
adoption that you could just hand it
00:09:31
over so they thought a zone nothing had
00:09:33
happened but you do make that bond even
00:09:37
though you're only seeing him for
00:09:38
certain times you've still given birth
00:09:41
to her so the bond is there
00:09:44
automatically when Michelle was four
00:09:53
weeks old
00:09:54
Delia's parents visited the convent it
00:09:57
was a moment Delia had been waiting for
00:09:59
I was just hoping that my father was
00:10:02
disabled you know okay
00:10:05
you know you come back home and and you
00:10:08
bring your baby up and that's fine
00:10:09
that's what I wanted I know my dad was
00:10:17
yearning to take a peek but didn't want
00:10:21
anyone to see him doing it and I thought
00:10:25
well at least he's looking
00:10:28
I watched thinking that the next move
00:10:31
was gonna be was gonna pick her out
00:10:38
I knew as soon as he walked away from
00:10:40
the pram that that was that there's no
00:10:43
way that I'm gonna change his mind
00:10:48
[Music]
00:10:52
have a seat Delia
00:10:56
it's been six weeks since Michelle was
00:10:58
born here sister we found a couple for
00:11:03
her I can't tell you anything about them
00:11:05
except that they have your coloring and
00:11:07
they're American he's in the Air Force
00:11:11
pilot stationed at North Hampton you'll
00:11:15
need to sign some papers for Michelle to
00:11:17
be taken out of the country that won't
00:11:20
be a problem will it
00:11:22
no sister
00:11:23
[Music]
00:11:36
this is our waiting room you can sit
00:11:38
here two weeks later at the Westminster
00:11:41
Offices of the Catholic Children's
00:11:43
Society Delia was allowed a final visit
00:11:46
with Michele you'll have a nice long
00:11:48
time to say your goodbyes
00:11:50
such a beautiful baby
00:11:54
you've been very brave
00:11:56
[Music]
00:12:05
when Delia was alone she slipped a note
00:12:08
into Michelle's blanket the note begged
00:12:15
the adoptive parents to tell Michel that
00:12:17
Delia had loved her and had given her up
00:12:19
unwillingly you've only got 30 minutes
00:12:25
or whatever it is to say goodbye so what
00:12:29
you try to do is try to look at a face
00:12:35
to burn the impression into your mind
00:12:40
because you you there and then you get
00:12:42
that feeling that I'm gonna forget the
00:12:45
face and then that's the last thing you
00:12:50
want so you feel the - all and what
00:12:57
maybe because it's wall but you're
00:13:00
feeling her body because that was the
00:13:03
last time you're gonna see her
00:13:04
[Music]
00:13:13
I'm sorry dude yeah it's time
00:13:15
[Music]
00:13:17
[Applause]
00:13:20
[Music]
00:13:22
she came over and and and she took her
00:13:27
when she took her out of the room and
00:13:32
locked the door behind her
00:13:37
and that was it
00:13:38
[Music]
00:13:42
that was the last time I saw her I can't
00:13:47
explain one minute I had a baby
00:13:49
Knicks mini it was gone
00:13:53
[Music]
00:13:59
Delia and her parents never spoke of the
00:14:01
adoption again
00:14:04
delia eventually married twice but had
00:14:07
no other children in 1977 her father
00:14:12
died and she began to search for
00:14:14
Michelle but Delia's mother Rosalinda
00:14:17
honored her late husband's wished that
00:14:19
the details of the adoption will be kept
00:14:21
secret
00:14:25
then in 1991 Rosalinda was hospitalized
00:14:29
with a terminal illness
00:14:31
a family friend Sonya Filkins urged
00:14:35
Rosalinda to tell Delia everything she
00:14:37
knew about Michele and the adoption the
00:14:50
people who got Michele the name of the
00:14:53
people you want is Walters
00:15:08
I'll buy the mom let me see her picture
00:15:15
[Music]
00:15:26
my darling Michele people come to see me
00:15:39
to ask me who that is oh-ho tell them
00:15:44
it's my granddaughter
00:15:47
[Music]
00:15:53
two weeks later Rosalinda Pazhani died
00:15:56
having at last given Delia the precious
00:15:59
gift of Michelle's adopted Lea I can
00:16:04
honestly say that not one day has passed
00:16:08
not one solitary day where I haven't
00:16:12
thought about her or thought what she
00:16:15
might be doing she's there all the time
00:16:20
you just you just can't can't rest you
00:16:23
can't leave it alone I've got to find
00:16:26
her
00:16:30
two photographs for all the Delia had to
00:16:33
remember Michel and she never stopped
00:16:35
trying to locate her
00:16:36
finally after 15 years of frustrated
00:16:39
research
00:16:40
Delia's efforts began to pay off last
00:16:44
July Edina learned that her daughter had
00:16:46
been renamed Laura and adoptions
00:16:49
official agree to send a letter to Laura
00:16:50
that Delia had written in the brief note
00:16:53
Delia said that she would soon appear in
00:16:55
unsolved mysteries and asked her
00:16:57
daughter to view the broadcast 1964 in
00:17:03
New York Mills New York on the evening
00:17:05
our program was aired Delia's daughter
00:17:07
Laura Frankland experienced firsthand
00:17:09
the heartbreaking events leading up to
00:17:11
her adoption when I found out my birth
00:17:26
mother was searching for me that was
00:17:29
pretty touching to know that she had
00:17:31
looked that far to try to find me
00:17:35
[Music]
00:17:41
after the broadcast Laura contacted art
00:17:44
Ellison and asked to be put in touch
00:17:46
with her birth mother against nearly
00:17:49
impossible odds Delia had at last found
00:17:51
her daughter a continent away amidst a
00:17:54
population of millions on September 19th
00:17:59
1992
00:18:00
Laura her husband their two children and
00:18:03
Laura's closest friends assembled a
00:18:05
Syracuse International Airport the
00:18:08
separation of birth mother and daughter
00:18:10
that had lasted more than a quarter of a
00:18:12
century was about to end it was a lot of
00:18:16
anticipation a lot of what's she gonna
00:18:19
think when she sees me and what is she
00:18:22
going through right now
00:18:24
[Music]
00:18:32
[Applause]
00:18:34
[Music]
00:18:47
she was everything and more that I'd
00:18:51
expected absolutely everything she's a
00:18:54
she's beautiful girl proud of her
00:19:00
before Laura's adoptive mother died in
00:19:03
1989 she had shared all she knew of
00:19:05
Laura's background Delia and Laura could
00:19:08
now fill in the remaining gaps in nearly
00:19:10
30 years of family history
00:19:14
fighting my birthmother now I don't
00:19:17
think has really changed my life as much
00:19:19
as it has probably enhanced it because
00:19:22
now I can find out some about my past
00:19:24
and my history and things that I never
00:19:25
thought that I would ever find out about
00:19:27
I can't replace her mother but I'd like
00:19:33
to think that I could be pretty close
00:19:37
the September reunion is only a
00:19:39
beginning at Christmas Laura and her
00:19:42
family plan to travel to England where
00:19:44
they will spend time with Delia and the
00:19:46
many relatives looking forward to
00:19:48
meeting them for the first time next a
00:19:52
baffling case of amnesia his son thanks
00:19:55
to our viewers On January 28th 1991 a
00:20:17
young man is rushed to a hospital in
00:20:19
Nevada he had been found dehydrated and
00:20:22
disoriented in the desert outside Las
00:20:23
Vegas he carried no identification and
00:20:27
was suffering from complete and total
00:20:29
amnesia the hospital staff named him
00:20:32
Tyler all efforts to jog Tyler's memory
00:20:37
failed authorities found no one reported
00:20:40
missing who matched his description his
00:20:44
fingerprints were not found on file with
00:20:46
the FBI and the CIA or the Department of
00:20:48
Defense for more than eight months Tyler
00:20:52
remained a man without a past and
00:20:54
possibly without a future and really
00:20:58
kind of a difficult point in my life
00:21:00
right now I can't do anything really I'm
00:21:03
almost like an illegal alien here I I
00:21:05
have no identification of any of any
00:21:09
form now I can't go to work because I
00:21:12
I'm not eligible for a Social Security
00:21:13
number I can't drive a car because I
00:21:16
don't have a social security number or a
00:21:18
date of birth and I'm starting to feel
00:21:21
more frustrated as the days go by
00:21:24
because I really feel this needs to come
00:21:26
to an
00:21:27
do need to find out who I am a County
00:21:32
psychiatrist diagnosed titres a genuine
00:21:34
victim of amnesia last month is case
00:21:37
took on added urgency when the state
00:21:39
funding which provided his job an
00:21:41
apartment was abruptly cut off then on
00:21:44
the night of our broadcast
00:21:45
Tyler searched for his identity came to
00:21:47
a poignant but unsettling conclusion
00:21:48
within minutes
00:21:50
Tyler was reunited with his mother by
00:21:52
phone but as more details emerged some
00:21:55
began to believe that title may not have
00:21:57
lost his memory at all that evening
00:22:02
Tyler gathered with friends to watch the
00:22:04
show before his segment even aired in
00:22:07
Las Vegas a man from Boise Idaho called
00:22:09
our telecenter and identified Tyler as
00:22:12

00:22:31
February of 1990 and she they've
00:22:36
informed me that you also have two
00:22:37
children and your wife lives in Iowa
00:22:42
okay that his real name is arthur paul
00:22:47
beal but he goes by paul he is 23 years
00:22:51
old before he was stricken with amnesia
00:22:53
he lived in Boise Idaho a few minutes
00:22:56
later a nervous Paul Beal called the
00:22:59
mother and stepfather he could not
00:23:00
remember hello may I speak with mrs.
00:23:04
Beal this is your son how are you you
00:23:13
smell great I've waited so long to hear
00:23:18
you
00:23:23
I'm scared I bet you are remember you I
00:23:34
don't remember you I'll help you Paul
00:23:38
the emotional phone call lasted nearly
00:23:41
20 minutes okay short time later the
00:23:55
case of Paul Beale aka Tyler doe took a
00:23:59
stunning and unexpected twist North Las
00:24:08
Vegas police arrived and placed Paul
00:24:10
under arrest for grand larceny he was
00:24:13
wanted by Boise police in connection
00:24:15
with a stolen shipment of frozen food
00:24:25
I've come to get my son
00:24:27
the next night Paul's mother Lynn Beale
00:24:30
arrived from Iowa to post bail for him
00:24:40
Oh
00:24:42
[Music]
00:24:45
the reunion was both emotional and
00:24:48
awkward
00:24:49
Paul Beale still did not recognize his
00:24:52
own mother it's strange being with Paul
00:25:02
and has not remembering anything about
00:25:04
me not knowing who I am
00:25:05
I just I want to push everything into
00:25:08
his head we can remember everything I
00:25:10
want to make sure I can do things to
00:25:13
help him I'm scared I don't want to do
00:25:15
something to push it back farther I want
00:25:17
to reinforce happy thoughts good
00:25:23
memories no I just want and I'm relieved
00:25:31
that he's safe he's alive
00:25:34
the reunion was tempered not only by
00:25:36
Paul's amnesia but by the criminal
00:25:38
charge against him
00:25:41
in Boise Paul was a salesman for a food
00:25:44
supply company January 5th 1991 he left
00:25:48
for Las Vegas to sell a shipment of
00:25:50
frozen food he never returned to Boise
00:25:53
on January 25th
00:25:56
Paul surfaced with the empty truck in
00:25:57
Boulder City Nevada where he was
00:25:59
questioned but not arrested by local
00:26:01
police at that particular time my
00:26:06
impression of mr. Beal was that he was
00:26:09
very intelligent very well-versed very
00:26:14
possibly well educated very clean-cut
00:26:18
and extremely talkative
00:26:20
it just wasn't Paul that isn't something
00:26:23
he would do
00:26:24
he's done silly stupid things like
00:26:27
anybody else has made mistakes but
00:26:30
nothing to the degree that this was
00:26:32
where he was actually breaking the law I
00:26:34
told him when he left Isis boys are
00:26:38
gonna get a warrant for you you know
00:26:40
they're gonna do it it's gonna be grand
00:26:41
larceny felony so it's just a matter of
00:26:44
time you better get up there go back up
00:26:46
there he said yeah I'm going back now
00:26:47
I'm going right back up there and take
00:26:49
care of the situation it'll be fine
00:26:53
three days after he was detained Paul
00:26:56
Beale who came to be known as Tyler was
00:26:58
found wandering in the desert detective
00:27:01
Bowman raises the obvious and disturbing
00:27:03
question is Paul Beale faking amnesia is
00:27:07
easy I don't know who are you I don't
00:27:10
know where are you from I don't know do
00:27:12
you know anything I don't know that's
00:27:14
just easy and we guy like him he's
00:27:17
convincing is this the four of you this
00:27:25
still isn't my son in in the fact that
00:27:28
this isn't how he would react to me we
00:27:30
were very close I could tell by his eyes
00:27:33
when I first saw him tonight that he
00:27:35
really didn't recognize me he was he
00:27:38
wanted to I could see it in his face he
00:27:41
wanted to if he was faking it there was
00:27:45
no way he could have faked that I am NOT
00:27:48
and have not throughout this entire
00:27:50
ordeal faked anything this is probably
00:27:54
the most horrifying nightmare that
00:27:58
anybody could go through losing an
00:28:00
identity losing every ounce and fiber of
00:28:06
a person's life having it pulled away
00:28:09
and then nine months later I haven't
00:28:15
given back to you I have it presented to
00:28:18
you but you still don't don't have it
00:28:24
and I give anything in the world to
00:28:27
remember right now when we return a
00:28:41
nightmare of love gone wrong and murder
00:28:55
when a net shot Bakker was 16 her family
00:28:59
moved from Cincinnati Ohio to Manatee
00:29:01
County Florida a net was on the shy side
00:29:03
and had trouble adjusting to a new high
00:29:06
school net discovered that it was very
00:29:10
hard to fit in with the clique of
00:29:12
friends and she missed that terribly
00:29:15
because she was so much a part of high
00:29:17
school in Ohio so she ended up dropping
00:29:20
out of high school and got a job as a
00:29:22
checkout girl at one of our local
00:29:24
grocery stores here Annette finally made
00:29:31
a friend
00:29:31
the butcher Jim Burnside 28 years her
00:29:34
senior thank you listen I just wanted to
00:29:41
ask it's a little restaurant down
00:29:42
working my boat and there's wonder if
00:29:44
she might join me for dinner tomorrow
00:29:45
night at that time she was only 17 and
00:29:48
this man was almost as old as her dad
00:29:51
thank you about eight o'clock tomorrow
00:29:52
night we really hoped that she would
00:29:56
meet somebody more her age but she was
00:29:59
so much in love with him that we finally
00:30:01
agreed to meet him but I didn't like him
00:30:05
from the first time I met him I just
00:30:07
there was just something about him that
00:30:09
I really don't know how to put into
00:30:13
words I just did not feel comfortable
00:30:15
with him at all but in that was really
00:30:19
very much in love with him in 1981
00:30:23
Annette shot Bakker and Jim Burnside
00:30:25
were married the bride was just 18 the
00:30:29
groom 46 it was a beginning of six years
00:30:32
of torment for Annette
00:30:36
the sobering fact is that here in the
00:30:39
United States
00:30:40
wife-beating accounts are more
00:30:41
significant injuries and rape auto
00:30:43
accidents and muggings combined and at
00:30:47
Burnside like millions of women entered
00:30:49
the private tear of a home which is a
00:30:50
living hell of physical and emotional
00:30:52
abuse like so many others and it became
00:30:55
trapped in a desperate charade
00:30:57
maintaining the facade of a happy
00:30:59
marriage to cover up an escalating cycle
00:31:02
of violence within a month of his
00:31:06
marriage to Annette Jim Burnside began
00:31:09
to drink and to reveal a frightening
00:31:11
sight of himself that his young wife had
00:31:13
never seen she became afraid of him
00:31:16
almost immediately because he was
00:31:19
jealous of her and when he was drinking
00:31:21
he was violent and and made remarks to
00:31:25
her all the time that she would never
00:31:28
ever leave him that hey well he started
00:31:32
telling her right from the beginning
00:31:33
that he would kill her if she ever tried
00:31:35
to leave him
00:31:40
hello Annette
00:31:43
where are you just before her first
00:31:50
wedding anniversary Annette took refuge
00:31:52
in a local shelter for battered women
00:31:56
with you he told her over and over again
00:32:02
if he couldn't find her she would suffer
00:32:06
heal your family she would absolutely
00:32:08
suffer because he would kill her family
00:32:10
and Annette felt like she didn't have
00:32:13
any choice right I told her don't stay
00:32:18
with him because of us
00:32:20
if Jim if he does anything to us then I
00:32:26
I don't know I just suppose that it's
00:32:28
God's will that things happen the way
00:32:30
they do but don't live with him the way
00:32:33
you have to live with him I would rather
00:32:36
that I would rather be dead than to have
00:32:39
you live a life like this
00:32:43
good thing you're here I have something
00:32:46
for you
00:32:47
[Music]
00:32:49
welcome home against her parents wishes
00:32:52
Annette went back to Jim she acted out
00:32:55
her happy homecoming with a sinking
00:32:57
heart
00:33:00
over the next few years Annette and Jim
00:33:02
had two daughters for a while it seemed
00:33:05
that things were improving Annette
00:33:07
wanted to take a job as a receptionist
00:33:09
at a local car dealership and Jim said
00:33:12
yes Jim had lost his job and he agreed
00:33:18
to let a network which amazed everybody
00:33:21
because he'd been so possessive and so
00:33:24
jealous of her we just never dreamt that
00:33:26
he would let her get a job and that was
00:33:28
absolutely thrilled with this job she
00:33:31
was so happy and she did so well they
00:33:34
all really liked Annette one of
00:33:37
Annette's co-workers was a salesman who
00:33:39
we will call Dave and that actually
00:33:43
asked my advice and said what would you
00:33:45
think about an automobile I want to buy
00:33:47
a car kind of told me that she just
00:33:49
wanted a little bit more freedom because
00:33:51
he always dropped her off and picked her
00:33:53
up and so she really had very little
00:33:55
freedom other than work she took the car
00:34:00
home and that more than gosh I don't
00:34:02
know three days a week he tried to wreck
00:34:07
it
00:34:21
we're just gonna get you back to bed
00:34:23
okay it's alright we're just
00:34:27
now let's see you tried me can't you get
00:34:30
it through your head she said if you
00:34:33
ever try to leave me I'll kill you
00:34:35
I will kill this whole family and Stacey
00:34:38
was only five years old at the time and
00:34:41
she looked up in him and she said daddy
00:34:43
you wouldn't kill me and he looked her
00:34:46
right in the face and said yes I would
00:34:48
kill you and it's just upsetting that so
00:34:51
bad she would would tell me you know the
00:34:55
way she was being treated and all
00:34:59
mothers you know you if your kids happy
00:35:03
you're happy and if they're sad you're
00:35:05
sad and it was just tearing me up to see
00:35:09
what she was going through the next day
00:35:15
with Jim at work and that called the
00:35:17
police to escort her and her daughters
00:35:19
to safety
00:35:20
[Applause]
00:35:25
she said that she'd made up her mind
00:35:27
that this is it she's not gonna stay
00:35:30
with him another day if he kills her
00:35:32
then he's gonna have to kill her because
00:35:33
she could not live this way anymore by
00:35:37
the time Jim came home Annette would be
00:35:39
on a plane to Ohio taking her daughter's
00:35:42
to stay with relatives five days later
00:35:45
she would secretly return to Florida and
00:35:48
to her job he had no idea where she was
00:35:52
but in the meantime Jim was calling us
00:35:55
with these threats and telling us that
00:35:58
this divorce was never going to be final
00:36:00
it would never see its final day
00:36:04
eventually Jim discovered that Annette
00:36:06
was back in town he began to spy on her
00:36:09
and was often spotted near the
00:36:11
dealership
00:36:13
could not get any help from anybody even
00:36:16
the Sheriff's Department when we went
00:36:19
there it was like Jim has to do
00:36:22
something we just cannot arrest the man
00:36:24
he's got to do something before we can
00:36:26
do anything with him unless you have
00:36:28
somebody guarding you 24 hours a day the
00:36:32
chances of somebody getting into it
00:36:34
stalking and they're gonna get you and
00:36:37
that's what he did he stalked her
00:36:39
[Music]
00:36:41
February 17 1988 three days before
00:36:45
Annette was scheduled to appear in court
00:36:46
for a divorce hearing at noon a net
00:36:49
matter co-worker Dave for lunch she was
00:36:56
smiling and happy and all of a sudden
00:36:59
your smile turned to his hole and fear
00:37:05
I got out of the automobile cuz I knew
00:37:09
if I didn't do something this could be
00:37:11
the end front end he looked at me like
00:37:14
he was just about to enjoy a large steak
00:37:17
I watched the fire come out of the gun
00:37:22
and it was like slow motion you could
00:37:25
feel each one to win just like a hot
00:37:27
poker
00:37:32
[Music]
00:37:42
by the time devar gained consciousness
00:37:44
and that was dead
00:37:46
Gemma stabbed her 15 times of the 10
00:37:48
inch butcher knife an autopsy would
00:37:53
reveal that a net probably died before
00:37:55
most of the wounds were inflicted
00:38:00
amazingly Jim Burnside had escaped on
00:38:02
foot in broad daylight after the murder
00:38:05
he purchased a bicycle and army
00:38:07
camouflage fatigues at a sporting goods
00:38:09
store he then withdrew $500 from an
00:38:12
automated teller machine and disappeared
00:38:17
Annette Burnside was laid to rest in a
00:38:20
manatee County Cemetery two and a half
00:38:23
years later a stranger appeared at her
00:38:25
grave when our groundskeeper approached
00:38:30
him a man quickly turned and walked away
00:38:32
without a word the groundskeeper later
00:38:36
identified the visitor as Jim Burnside
00:38:40
and what I'd like to see is James
00:38:43
Burnside off the streets
00:38:44
not because of what he has done to me
00:38:48
don't see what he has done to us his own
00:38:51
children his wife this is why he has to
00:38:57
be taken off the streets because he's
00:38:59
gonna do it again you know the world
00:39:02
will never get over in that death and
00:39:05
there's a person that had so much to
00:39:08
give she knew in her heart she was not
00:39:12
gonna make it I knew in my heart she was
00:39:14
not gonna make it and I just hope and
00:39:17
pray that somebody spots him we never
00:39:21
will feel safe until we know Jim has
00:39:24
been caught it's bad enough knowing that
00:39:28
a net had to die but to know that he is
00:39:31
still out there it is horrible we just
00:39:35
want him caught we want to be able to
00:39:39
close it out and go on with our life
00:39:44
update the night 2 story air to viewers
00:39:47
contacted our telecenter to report the
00:39:50
Jim Burnside was living in Shelby County
00:39:52
Alabama under the assumed name L Wilson
00:39:56
when I saw his actual picture I just
00:39:59
looked at my husband and I just started
00:40:01
pointing and I'm going you know tell me
00:40:03
my eyes aren't deceiving me you know
00:40:06
that is al and he goes yes that's al
00:40:09
first thing I thought to say well they
00:40:12
you know let's call up the authorities
00:40:15
and get this guy off the street
00:40:18
Burnside was employed as a carpenter at
00:40:20
the 280 flea market just outside of
00:40:22
Chelsea Alabama we hadn't received a
00:40:26
call from that they our office in
00:40:28
Birmingham stating that they felt pretty
00:40:32
sure that James Burnside would be at
00:40:34
this flea market on highway 280 located
00:40:37
in Shelby County the morning after our
00:40:40
broadcast FBI agents and sheriff's
00:40:43
deputies checked out the flea market
00:40:48
right there on the roof and apparently
00:40:51
Burnside saw them and went towards his
00:40:55
truck the fugitive drew a 357 magnum and
00:41:04
pointed it at the officers
00:41:08
[Music]
00:41:16
Burnside was struck by two bullets he
00:41:18
was placed under arrest and taken to a
00:41:20
birmingham hospital but what we've been
00:41:24
able to determine and again talking to
00:41:26
his co-workers he hadn't made a
00:41:28
statement on Thursday morning that he
00:41:30
had anticipated having problems that day
00:41:33
so apparently he had viewed the unsolved
00:41:36
mysteries himself wins tonight
00:41:38
[Music]
00:41:51
next a young man's poignant search with
00:41:54
a big brother who changed his life
00:41:56
[Music]
00:42:08
yeah in 1969 when Jeff Fisher was 5
00:42:15
years old his father left home
00:42:18
forcing Jeff's mother to raise her young
00:42:19
son and daughter alone shouldn't make
00:42:29
any difference I'm not a guy I know
00:42:36
you'd like to be in there with Daddy ok
00:42:38
but daddy's gonna be gone for a little
00:42:40
while it was very hard on Jeff after his
00:42:44
dad left because he had been very close
00:42:46
to him and suddenly he was gone and Jeff
00:42:50
went through the feelings that that a
00:42:52
lot of children have that maybe this was
00:42:55
my fault maybe I said something maybe I
00:42:57
did something that made my dad leave
00:43:00
Jeff was a very sensitive shy little boy
00:43:03
so things like that bothered him a lot I
00:43:06
would always ask my mom you know where's
00:43:09
daddy you know where's daddy and she'd
00:43:10
say oh you know he's gone away and you
00:43:13
know I don't know when he's gonna be
00:43:14
back and you know it was just the fact
00:43:16
that he just wasn't there anymore and I
00:43:18
just felt a real loss you know cuz I had
00:43:21
been so close to him and now he just
00:43:23
wasn't there anymore two years after his
00:43:27
father left Jeff Fisher met a man who
00:43:29
profoundly changed his life a man he's
00:43:32
not seen or heard from in more than 20
00:43:34
years Jeff is one of the thousands of
00:43:36
boys whose lives have been enriched by
00:43:38
big brothers of America an organization
00:43:41
that provides young boys with strong
00:43:42
adult male role models
00:43:46
[Music]
00:43:49
in 1971 Big Brothers of America opened a
00:43:53
chapter in Jeff's hometown of Elkhart
00:43:55
Indiana Jeff was a first little brother
00:43:58
so what kind of sports deal act his big
00:44:01
brother was John Novotny a local
00:44:03
salesman and father of a two-year-old
00:44:05
daughter it is he's a big guy he was
00:44:09
over six feet jet-black hair last time
00:44:12
just a really solidly built guy a very
00:44:15
commanding type of guy but really easy
00:44:20
to get along with you ever put a pin out
00:44:23
before yeah you're about to learn over
00:44:27
the next 10 months Jeff and John spent
00:44:29
many weekends together okay
00:44:33
John gave me the companionship that I
00:44:35
really needed at that time he would take
00:44:38
me out and do things you know that you
00:44:40
know mom wasn't able to either afford to
00:44:42
take us to do or just didn't have the
00:44:44
time because she was working so much
00:44:46
just the fact that this was you know an
00:44:49
older guy that I could hang around with
00:44:51
and not you know not having told me to
00:44:53
go away and you know come back later and
00:44:55
stuff something you know a guy that
00:44:57
wanted to spend some time with me you
00:44:59
know made me feel it really good I was
00:45:03
pretty good I think it's ready to light
00:45:05
okay give it a spin after Jeff and John
00:45:10
started seeing each other
00:45:11
I noticed that Jeff had a lot more
00:45:14
confidence in himself and he was very
00:45:17
proud of the fact that he had a big
00:45:19
brother and he would tell the other kids
00:45:21
well well John and I are going to go do
00:45:24
this or my big brother and I are
00:45:26
because he was very proud of the fact
00:45:28
that that he had a million in his life
00:45:30
that was just his that just belong to
00:45:34
Jeff a year and a half after they met
00:45:39
John's company transferred him to
00:45:41
another state Jeff and John were no
00:45:44
longer able to spend time together but
00:45:46
they did stay in touch in September of
00:45:51
1972 Jeff underwent open-heart surgery
00:45:55
to correct a congenital defect it is a
00:45:58
terrifying experience but a phone call
00:46:00
from John who himself suffered heart
00:46:02
problems helped to ease Jeff's fears
00:46:04
yeah
00:46:09
it's real me I got this bed it moves up
00:46:11
and down sideways I think it helped Jeff
00:46:14
to see that that John was this big
00:46:18
strong guy and and he had a bad heart
00:46:20
and so if if John can be big and strong
00:46:24
then maybe this heart condition is at
00:46:26
the end of the world and I think that
00:46:29
was a big help to Jeff Jeff never heard
00:46:33
from John again but feels a John's
00:46:36
support and understanding were a key to
00:46:38
his complete recovery
00:46:40
Jeff won all to graduate from high
00:46:42
school he now works in the construction
00:46:45
field and has a family of his own tell
00:46:51
me a story he just introduced me to a
00:46:53
world that I had never seen before that
00:46:56
was really beautiful and really just so
00:47:00
different from what I was used to if I
00:47:03
finally see him again I just want to
00:47:05
thank him this what say God yeah thank
00:47:07
you cuz you just you know I still think
00:47:10
about you he made a lasting impression
00:47:13
it's been 20 years and he's still a
00:47:16
really vivid part of my memory
00:47:20

thanks to our viewers Jeff Fisher search
00:47:30
for his Big Brother ended the night of
00:47:32
our broadcast nine days later Jeff and
00:47:35
his mother traveled at John novotny's
00:47:36
home in Tacoma Washington for an
00:47:38
emotional reunion it's unbelievable I
00:48:01
was absolutely stunned I had absolutely
00:48:04
no idea that Jeff was looking for me and
00:48:08
then as the show aired people from
00:48:12
Elkhart and from Michigan started
00:48:14
calling me on the phone telling me that
00:48:16
I was on television and Jeff Fisher was
00:48:20
looking for me and we must have got 35
00:48:22
calls that night and at least that many
00:48:24
the next night you know I wanted to say
00:48:27
thanks to this guy for 18 years and you
00:48:30
know whatever it took to come out and
00:48:32
say that you know I was willing to do
00:48:35
this is one we were dialects in Kentucky
00:48:37
for a John Mellencamp show
00:48:40
when I first started being a big brother
00:48:43
the question was would I really have
00:48:45
enough time to do it right and then 20
00:48:48
years later to find out that I really
00:48:51
did make a difference I mean it brings
00:48:53
the whole thing to reality
