00:02:12
Saturday September 12 1987 began as a
00:02:16
typical workday for Dale Kirsten the 50
00:02:19
year old security guard and maintenance
00:02:21
worked for 27 years the corning grass
00:02:24
roots part of Bradford Pennsylvania
00:02:32
at eleven pm Kerstetter began his shift
00:02:35
as a weekend security guard that night a
00:02:39
quarter of a million dollars worth of
00:02:40
platinum pipe vanished from the plant
00:02:43
they'll Kerstetter was never seen again
00:02:49
pound for pound Platinum's one of the
00:02:52
most precious commodities in the world
00:02:53
it is even more expensive than gold in
00:02:57
addition to his beauteous jewelry
00:02:58
platinum was widely used manufacturing
00:03:01
after Dale cursed enter and a fortune
00:03:03
and platinum pipe disappeared from the
00:03:05
Corning Factory authorities were
00:03:07
mystified was Kerstetter the unwitting
00:03:09
victim of a robbery or had he engineered
00:03:12
the heist himself Dale Kerstetter grew
00:03:16
up in Bradford and except for his years
00:03:18
in the Air Force lived there all his
00:03:20
life Kerstetter had been divorced for
00:03:22
ten years and his teenage son still
00:03:24
lived with four of his five daughters
00:03:26
also lived in Pennsylvania he was very
00:03:31
compassionate honest liked to have fun
00:03:37
loved the outdoors he was very faithful
00:03:40
to everybody and he hated a lie he never
00:03:46
believed in lying he's just a great
00:03:48
father I mean there wasn't a kid in the
00:03:52
world that wouldn't want to have him as
00:03:53
their dad
00:03:59
Dale was a marginal employee yeah he was
00:04:04
a slow worker and yeah we had some
00:04:06
problems with occasionally but at the
00:04:08
same time we're looking at an employee
00:04:10
who at the risk of his own life probably
00:04:12
saved half a dozen lives and hundreds of
00:04:14
thousands of dollars of property value
00:04:16
we had an incident several years ago
00:04:18
where a forklift that accidentally
00:04:20
rolled underneath a stream of hot molten
00:04:23
glass and the glass is actually pouring
00:04:26
down on to the propane tank in the back
00:04:28
of the forklift Dale immediately jumped
00:04:31
onto the forklift and drove it off and
00:04:32
underneath the hot stream of glass so
00:04:35
you can look at in one side and see
00:04:37
where you might get involved in
00:04:38
something on this at the same time maybe
00:04:40
you wouldn't
00:04:44
Sunday morning September 13th when
00:04:48
security guard john lindquist arrived at
00:04:50
7:00 a.m. he expected to find Dale
00:04:52
Kerstetter waiting to be relieved the
00:04:56
jewsĂ setting right inside the door he
00:05:02
wasn't there so I walked in the
00:05:04
cafeteria and I see his lunch pail
00:05:08
sitting on the table I happen to pick up
00:05:11
the newspaper and there the keys were so
00:05:15
I looked up lunch pail and I see alcohol
00:05:17
everything there he had made later
00:05:22
Sunday morning Kerstetter snoop pickup
00:05:25
truck was discovered in the parking lot
00:05:26
and the police were called to
00:05:28
investigate the truck yielded number of
00:05:32
clues as suggested Kerstetter had not
00:05:34
disappeared voluntarily his keys were in
00:05:37
the ignition he had left behind a full
00:05:39
carton of cigarettes an empty holster
00:05:41
from his 22 caliber pistol and his
00:05:44
daypack
00:05:47
[Music]
00:05:53
on Sunday afternoon the chairs came that
00:05:57
was brought in to track Kerstetter in
00:05:59
the 112 thousand square foot Factory
00:06:04
police were concerned that Kerstetter
00:06:06
might have suffered a heart attack or
00:06:07
fallen injured himself somewhere in the
00:06:10
vast building the dog led police to the
00:06:18
second floor this was a sight of the
00:06:20
plants glass kill also known as the tank
00:06:26
although a tank contained valuable
00:06:29
platinum pipe it was not normally on
00:06:31
Kerstetter security rounds Kerstetter
00:06:34
said was found at the tank he was
00:06:36
nowhere in the building the
00:06:45
investigation next focused on the three
00:06:47
security cameras that monitored the
00:06:49
factory around-the-clock personnel
00:06:52
manager Patrick Foley was surprised and
00:06:55
disturbed by what the cameras have
00:06:56
recorded we have recreated the key
00:07:00
sequences found on the tapes
00:07:01
[Music]
00:07:06
the first thing I saw was a masked man
00:07:10
in the back of the plant in the one area
00:07:13
but I saw the masked man on a tape I was
00:07:17
very alarmed at first I thought well
00:07:20
obviously this person there's been some
00:07:22
some foul play deals involved and foul
00:07:24
play and he and he probably is missing
00:07:26
and then Dale Kerstetter came back and
00:07:30
met this masked person in the back of
00:07:33
the plant I I guess I would say I had a
00:07:36
very empty feeling in my stomach he said
00:07:38
what on earth and then as I continued to
00:07:40
review the tapes and I saw the masked
00:07:42
person come back out and go up to the
00:07:44
tank area then I was extremely anxious
00:07:48
because at that time I realized that not
00:07:50
only do we have a missing employee we
00:07:52
also there was a good possibility that
00:07:53
we had missing platinum in the plant
00:07:58
whoever removed the platinum from the
00:08:01
tank was extremely familiar with the
00:08:04
plant everything in the plant they knew
00:08:06
exactly where to go you have to remember
00:08:07
that this transpired late at night there
00:08:09
were very few lights on in the plant but
00:08:12
yet this person knew exactly where to go
00:08:14
where to find bags that they needed
00:08:15
tools that they needed how to go up to
00:08:17
the tank and move back out of the tank
00:08:19
area
00:08:23
the most perplexing moment in the tapes
00:08:25
is this interaction between the God and
00:08:27
the intruder his Kerstetter being
00:08:30
coerced or simply pretending to be
00:08:32
caused at one point he looks directly
00:08:35
into the camera was cursed at her
00:08:38
secretly signaling for help or was he
00:08:41
coolly flaunting his crime if he was
00:08:44
involved why would he willingly walk in
00:08:47
front of a camera knowing that it was
00:08:49
there he knew the camera was there
00:08:51
why wouldn't an attempt have been made
00:08:53
to cover the camera it just doesn't make
00:08:55
sense I think the fact that he did
00:08:59
everything in front of the cameras was
00:09:00
once again just Dale Kerstetter
00:09:02
to say to us look hey Here I am I'm
00:09:04
taking your platinum and there isn't a
00:09:06
thing you can do about it
00:09:07
if he had planned on taking off anywhere
00:09:10
why would he bother packing lunch I mean
00:09:12
just little things like that and a whole
00:09:15
carton of cigarettes and he smoked all
00:09:17
the time I mean he would have taken his
00:09:19
cigarettes
00:09:23
her stutters daughter's believe he was
00:09:25
an innocent victim according to their
00:09:28
Theory first enter heard or saw the
00:09:30
masked intruder and went to investigate
00:09:33
[Music]
00:09:38
the intruder fearing discovered and
00:09:41
intend on his robbery may have murdered
00:09:43
Dale Kirsten
00:09:50
one camera showed the intruder wheeling
00:09:52
out a heavy bag on a manual forklift
00:09:55
there's a very good possibility that bag
00:09:58
could contain the Platinum or there's a
00:10:00
very good possibility to that bag could
00:10:02
contain the body of Dale Kerstetter
00:10:05
everybody says oh keep up hope but if he
00:10:11
it was ever in on any of this this thing
00:10:15
that happened he's out of his mind
00:10:18
[Music]
00:10:24
a second thing places Kerstetter at the
00:10:26
center of a bold and premeditated
00:10:28
robberies Dale who was happy as a trades
00:10:33
worker unfortunate prior to this
00:10:35
incident he had just been cut out of the
00:10:36
trade shop which entailed about a
00:10:39
probably a five to seven thousand dollar
00:10:41
cut for him he was not a happy person at
00:10:43
the time of this theft through our
00:10:46
investigation we determined that Dale
00:10:48
Kerstetter was approximately thirty to
00:10:50
forty thousand dollars in arrears on
00:10:52
various payments trailer payments
00:10:55
vehicle payments and different bills
00:10:58
which he had owed throughout the area he
00:11:01
had children that could take care of him
00:11:04
I was in a financial position to take
00:11:06
care of him
00:11:07
he had stock in Corning he had money
00:11:09
invested if it got to the point where he
00:11:12
really needed money there was too many
00:11:14
ways he could have obtained the money
00:11:16
legally I think that Dale Kerstetter was
00:11:20
a very intelligent man in a crafty sort
00:11:23
of way I think that if he did not plan
00:11:27
this thing by himself and do it with an
00:11:29
accomplice I think he was indirectly
00:11:32
involved
00:11:35
Dail curse debtors family is anxious to
00:11:38
know if he is alive whether he committed
00:11:40
the crime or not his family wants to
00:11:42
know the truth I don't care whether he
00:11:46
was involved it's not gonna make me
00:11:47
think any less of him or love him any
00:11:50
less what I want to know is what
00:11:51
happened was he involved did he get away
00:11:54
with it
00:11:55
is he dead somewhere was he abducted I
00:11:58
don't think he'd do it unless he planned
00:12:01
on coming back someday he's alive which
00:12:04
i think he is he's either in Canada or
00:12:07
I'd say in Australia and I figure in
00:12:11
seven years when his statue limitations
00:12:12
up he'll come back scot-free and he
00:12:15
won't be able to touch him I can't
00:12:18
believe that I can't believe he was in
00:12:19
on that at all no way shape or form
00:12:27
[Music]
00:12:29
he had six kids two grandkids gonna do
00:12:34
something like that and take off and not
00:12:37
call any of them you know just take off
00:12:40
and you never talk to your kids again I
00:12:44
just know I just can't believe it in the
00:12:50
months that followed the theft Corning
00:12:52
sodas bradford operation and the new
00:12:54
owners of informed us of platinum is no
00:12:55
longer used at the facility they'll
00:12:58
curse debtors family continues to hope
00:13:00
that he is safe and if he is alive
00:13:02
Pennsylvania State Police want to
00:13:04
question him about his involvement in
00:13:06
the events of September 12 1987
00:13:11
[Music]
00:13:18
last August we featured a story about
00:13:20
New York City orphans who between 1854
00:13:23
1929 were put on trains and taken to the
00:13:25
South and Midwest in search of adoptive
00:13:27
families one of the orphan train riders
00:13:33
profiled in our story was silvia wim hof
00:13:37
in 1921 at the age of three Sylvia got
00:13:40
off an orphan train in Columbus Nebraska
00:13:42
where she was adopted by the John Nick
00:13:44
family when I was about 17 18 years old
00:13:50
then I began to question my mother Mick
00:13:53
whether I had any brothers or sisters
00:13:57
and if so I wonder if we could ever get
00:14:01
together when Sylvia located her pursuit
00:14:06
she heard that she was born Stephanie
00:14:08
Volk and that she had an older sibling
00:14:11
for the next 52 years she searched for
00:14:14
the brother or sisters she never knew
00:14:17
[Music]
00:14:19
the day after our broadcast Sylvia
00:14:21
search came to an end she learned that
00:14:23
her brother 72 year-old Joseph Volk was
00:14:25
living in New York City
00:14:26
Bouck stepdaughter had seen our
00:14:28
broadcast and recognized the names on
00:14:30
Sylvia's birth certificate on September
00:14:32
25th Sylvia flew to New York and met her
00:14:34
brother Joseph for the first time
00:14:46
[Music]
00:14:57
we hugged each other and we were just
00:15:00
really thrilled and happy that we
00:15:04
finally finally got together I had heard
00:15:08
I had assisted anybody I was luckily
00:15:11
pleased when I saw it and thankful
00:15:14
thankful to God most brothers and
00:15:20
sisters grow up sharing their lives
00:15:22
together but for Sylvia and Joe she
00:15:24
loved and memories are just beginning
00:15:28
the next man we will meet as Francis
00:15:31
Murphy in 1928 when he was 11 he too
00:15:35
rode the Orphan Train his baby sister
00:15:39
Margaret and his mother who was too poor
00:15:41
to take care of him were both left
00:15:43
behind when I got on the train I didn't
00:15:48
really feel that I was being wrenched
00:15:52
away from somebody I didn't know that
00:15:54
much about my mother so that it wasn't a
00:15:57
matter of tearing me away from her
00:16:01
because I was away from her all the time
00:16:02
anyway it was a big adventure more than
00:16:05
anything else as a kid in New York you
00:16:09
have to remember that we didn't know the
00:16:13
west's and what we knew was from the
00:16:15
picture shows we saw of cowboys and
00:16:18
Indians and maybe engineers and go in
00:16:21
that direction when I was the biggest
00:16:23
thrill that a kid in my time could
00:16:26
really expect
00:16:28
[Music]
00:16:36
Francis's excitment soon turned to
00:16:38
sadness stop after stop potential
00:16:47
adoptive parents would be waiting to
00:16:48
pick their child from the crowd but not
00:16:51
all the children found new parents
00:16:56
Frances who had boarded the train in New
00:16:58
York with such high hopes began to
00:17:00
realize that none of the families alone
00:17:02
the trains route wanted him 14 or 15
00:17:08
children that were leaving and he got
00:17:13
off the train with their belongings and
00:17:15
they told Frances you should stay on the
00:17:17
train and he would say the crowd can get
00:17:19
smaller and smaller until finally he was
00:17:21
the only child left on the train
00:17:31
[Music]
00:17:37
Francis never was adopted he went from
00:17:40
family to family as a foster child in
00:17:47
spite of his early hardships Francis's
00:17:49
life turned out well he became a high
00:17:52
school teacher married and had five
00:17:55
children and six grandchildren Francis
00:18:00
Murphy drove the Orphan Train 60 years
00:18:03
ago developed heart disease in 1987
00:18:05
sadly he died soon after we filmed his
00:18:08
interview in November Francis's wife and
00:18:11
family have continued his search and
00:18:13
they asked that we present his story
00:18:14
despite the fact that he is gone they
00:18:17
hoped to unite the family who still
00:18:18
loves Francis the family he never knew I
00:18:21
had wanted so desperately to find it was
00:18:25
extremely important to Francis to go
00:18:28
ahead with this interview he'd been
00:18:30
looking forward to it for literally
00:18:32
months and just the hope that he would
00:18:37
find somebody particularly his sister
00:18:42
was important and know much about love
00:18:48
growing up and he found out as he got
00:18:52
older and had a family of his own
00:18:55
I think his finding Margaret would be an
00:18:59
extension of it look
00:19:03
it's still very important to us that we
00:19:08
finish what he tried to do

00:19:29
1883 plains of central Texas near the
00:19:32
town of Marfa a hundred years ago cattle
00:19:36
by the thousands were herded by Cowboys
00:19:38
across this arid country one evening
00:19:42
during a roundup a cowhand named Robert
00:19:45
Ellis noticed a strange glow off in the
00:19:47
distance he saw a ghostly light
00:19:57
shimmering in the darkness it appeared
00:20:00
to be a few miles away and it hovered
00:20:02
just a few feet above the ground
00:20:04
they thought there were probably a
00:20:06
campfire Indians or other travelers but
00:20:11
they just kept sitting on the next night
00:20:13
they were there the next night and the
00:20:15
next week and year and I'm sure they
00:20:18
began to wonder what on earth were those
00:20:20
lights
00:20:23
in 1916 Hallie Stilwell was 18 years old
00:20:27
when she witnessed the same phenomenon
00:20:29
[Music]
00:20:31
we had decided to come to Marfa to
00:20:34
attend to a little business
00:20:36
we were just visiting and talking and
00:20:40
all of a sudden we saw lights over on
00:20:43
the shahadat mountains look how it
00:20:47
couldn't be any kind of car lights and
00:20:50
we first thought probably it was a
00:20:53
campfire of Indians or Mexicans or
00:20:58
ranchers but it didn't act like a
00:21:01
campfire at all do you think their
00:21:04
campfires it can't be a fire
00:21:07
they were peculiar and I've never seen
00:21:09
anything like them before and of course
00:21:12
none of us knew anything about it we
00:21:15
were not scientists or anything like
00:21:17
that so we said well it couldn't be
00:21:20
anything but a ghost it's just ghost
00:21:22
lights and from then on we mentioned
00:21:25
them is ghost lights
00:21:29
in 1943 the mysterious lights were seen
00:21:32
again near Martha's Army Air Base when
00:21:37
we saw the Marfa lights the first time
00:21:39
there was no vehicular traffic at night
00:21:42
fuel was rationed lights were a
00:21:45
phenomena in themselves in those days
00:21:48
because there were no lights in the one
00:21:50
on the moon is out it's beautiful when
00:21:52
the moon is not out it's so dark it's
00:21:54
awesome what's that we saw something
00:21:57
that was totally foreign to anything in
00:21:59
and around the air haze when we did see
00:22:03
the lights we were very curious and we
00:22:06
inquired in the village of Marfa about
00:22:09
the strange things yeah sure
00:22:12
we've got little lights so what else
00:22:17
over the years explanations for these
00:22:19
mysterious lights have raised ball
00:22:21
lightning to st. Elmo's fire to
00:22:23
Jackrabbits with glow worms attached to
00:22:25
their tails they knew superstition even
00:22:28
has it that the lights of the ghost of
00:22:30
an Apache chief who refuses to give up
00:22:32
his desert home
00:22:36
the lights have been continually seen
00:22:39
near the small town of Marfa but
00:22:41
surprising if the witnesses aren't
00:22:42
frightened of these ghost lights in fact
00:22:45
most seem to regard them with affection
00:22:47
I know they exist I've seen them several
00:22:51
times two of the four of us saw the
00:22:55
lights too did not and we were looking
00:22:58
in exactly the same spot now I can't
00:23:00
explain that I know they're there
00:23:02
there's no doubt about it
00:23:04
some nights I see them better than other
00:23:06
nights though when I was a child of
00:23:09
course if you have a lot of childlike
00:23:10
curiosity and my first thing was I want
00:23:13
to find out what those are I mean this
00:23:15
is my Loch Ness monster I'm gonna catch
00:23:17
it and find out what it is and so I just
00:23:19
in that moment I decided I was gonna try
00:23:21
to solve the mystery looks like we need
00:23:24
to head south east toward the sanity's
00:23:26
years ago my brother and I I got the
00:23:28
idea the reason no one had ever gotten
00:23:30
close to the lights was because they're
00:23:31
using motor vehicles like airplanes or
00:23:33
jeeps or cars so we thought if we took
00:23:35
out on foot across the desert we could
00:23:37
sneak up on them
00:23:41
so we got our gear together in a camera
00:23:44
and just took out walking across the
00:23:46
desert been tried for about four hours
00:23:47
to walk up close to them and we never
00:23:50
could get real close to them it was
00:23:51
almost like a mirage it just kept moving
00:23:53
a little further and further away from
00:23:54
you says almost like they knew what we
00:23:57
were doing and we're just gonna tease us
00:23:59
and stay a little bit ahead of us but
00:24:01
distance is so deceiving out here we
00:24:03
couldn't tell if we were looking at a
00:24:04
light as big as a tire or if we were
00:24:07
seeing a light as big as just a
00:24:08
cantaloupe and so we couldn't get closer
00:24:11
how to really get a good idea of how big
00:24:12
they were in July of 1989 we asked three
00:24:18
scientists from a local observatory and
00:24:20
university to conduct a formal
00:24:22
investigation into the lights
00:24:24
one investigator was a professor of
00:24:26
chemistry and other a geologist from the
00:24:29
third in astronomy if we're not pushing
00:24:33
just troughs of hot air up on either
00:24:35
side of janati down here live there are
00:24:39
11 other technicians and observers
00:24:41
almost actually you're calling three the
00:24:47
lights have been seen near the shonali
00:24:49
mountain range the radio beacon is also
00:24:51
a symbol in front of the peaks a highway
00:24:54
winds its way through these mountains in
00:24:56
order to prevent misidentification with
00:24:58
headlights - marker lights replaced at
00:25:01
the borders of the road the Veni lights
00:25:04
are spotted outside these markers the
00:25:06
scientists cannot explain their source
00:25:08
then investigators can be searching at
00:25:10
the observing a ghostly phenomenon
00:25:13
weather was it was a light on horizon
00:25:18
the investigators are using special
00:25:21
night time view equipment in this
00:25:26
instance the camera films two headlights
00:25:28
moving slowly from left to right past
00:25:30
the radio beacon
00:25:42
11:59 p.m.
00:25:44
an unknown light appears doctor look up
00:25:47
there on the hill to the right of marker
00:25:49
three I see it it's off to the right
00:25:52
it's about the same distance camera pans
00:25:54
past the radial centerline is from three
00:25:57
you know three can you verify if you
00:25:59
have any traffic lights off to the west
00:26:01
or Northwest who continues to past the
00:26:04
right marker light yes in the middle of
00:26:08
an empty planet a brighter
00:26:09
ghostly gold can be seen a video camera
00:26:12
also recorded the same light this is
00:26:16
gonna verify a lot we're saying off to
00:26:18
the west
00:26:19
observers were certain that the light
00:26:21
did not come from a man-made source gone
00:26:30
way down
00:26:32
it's gone completely out now it's almost
00:26:34
like it imploded like a unit one could
00:26:39
you also verify there it comes did you
00:26:44
see it
00:26:44
yeah I'm just coming back just as bright
00:26:47
as it was before same place
00:26:52
[Music]
00:26:55
you need to fade out again there it goes
00:26:56
this extremely broad thought he was
00:26:58
shoulder what was it that the cameras
00:27:00
recorded we know the life stare we know
00:27:03
it is something of natural origin it is
00:27:06
not man-made now the next question is
00:27:10
how do you explain them there is
00:27:12
something in addition to car lights
00:27:14
people are seeing real activity in the
00:27:17
atmosphere one scientists thought the
00:27:21
lights might be refracted starlight
00:27:23
another luminous gases produced by small
00:27:25
earthquakes but they are not sure and
00:27:28
all they could say for certain that it
00:27:30
was a natural phenomenon has yet
00:27:32
unexplained by science
00:27:35
what's that over there I don't know most
00:27:38
of the people in Marvin's grown up and
00:27:40
little lights don't really need any
00:27:42
explanation as to what they are the fact
00:27:45
they exist at all bringing a touch of
00:27:47
magic into their day-to-day lives is all
00:27:49
they need to know it's a phenomena
00:27:52
that's not explained and so let's play
00:27:57
that game all I know is they're there
00:28:00
let's go find out what they are let's
00:28:03
just leave them a mystery I'm not gonna
00:28:05
try to solve it I'm gonna I'm gonna be
00:28:08
content with ghosts
00:28:10
and let the ghosts take care of them
00:28:20
next the story of an innocent young
00:28:23
couple whose romantic weekend was
00:28:24
shattered by a sadistic and lucid killer
00:28:27
[Music]
00:28:42
remember 18th 1987 Jay Cooke and his
00:28:45
high school sweetheart
00:28:47
Tanya van Kyle over took the ferry from
00:28:49
Victoria Canada to Washington State
00:28:52
Jay was 20 years old Tanya was 17 we
00:28:56
were in love this was to be their first
00:29:00
trip together and they had planned on a
00:29:02
romantic weekend
00:29:06
Jay and Tanya had been going out
00:29:08
together for about six months I think he
00:29:14
was either there or she was here I think
00:29:17
she was quite special to him they
00:29:20
certainly seemed to be good for each
00:29:21
other from everything that I could
00:29:22
gather I certainly had no apprehension
00:29:25
about Tanya being with Jay I feel very
00:29:28
comfortable with that
00:29:29
[Applause]
00:29:34
sometime during their journey Jan
00:29:36
Tania's peaceful vacation turned into a
00:29:38
violent nightmare the couples trip began
00:29:44
in Victoria Canada where they took the 4
00:29:46
p.m. car ferry to Port Angeles
00:29:47
Washington Jay had borrowed his father's
00:29:52
van and after they disembarked from the
00:29:54
ferry they were seen twice heading south
00:29:56
on highway 101 once in the Washington
00:30:00
town of Hood sport at approximately 8:00
00:30:01
p.m. an hour later at alland it is
00:30:05
believed they were headed towards a
00:30:06
second car ferry from Bremerton to
00:30:08
Seattle Jay and Tanya were expected home
00:30:14
the following day but when they hadn't
00:30:16
returned or called by the next evening
00:30:18
their families began to worry if tanya
00:30:22
was late for anything which was not
00:30:24
unusual but she would phone she would
00:30:25
always phone so when Tanya did not phone
00:30:28
the next evening when they were supposed
00:30:30
to be returning my wife we came out the
00:30:32
answer so I tried to downplay it for my
00:30:35
wife's sake and probably to reassure
00:30:38
myself that everything would be okay
00:30:40
however in the following day when she
00:30:42
didn't call we knew there was something
00:30:44
wrong
00:30:50
Tania's body was found partially clothed
00:30:54
she had been raped and murdered
00:30:58
we found some wire ties but you would
00:31:02
bundle wires together with laying
00:31:04
alongside the road we assumed that they
00:31:09
were used to secure Tonya in the band
00:31:12
well we didn't know what to think then
00:31:14
because they hadn't found Jay and for a
00:31:19
while it looked like Jay might even be a
00:31:22
suspect they told us to be prepared for
00:31:26
that
00:31:27
[Music]
00:31:30
the next day Jays van was found ninety
00:31:34
miles away in the city of Delano there
00:31:38
we go
00:31:39
[Applause]
00:31:44
there's one of the ties it was just like
00:31:46
leave Kenya alfonsĂn there's another one
00:31:50
puffle got some blood over here it looks
00:31:52
like
00:31:53
at the time nobody was certainly exactly
00:31:56
what had happened but our concern was
00:32:00
heightened a couple more notches once
00:32:02
the van was found two blocks away from
00:32:07
the van under the ports of Italian
00:32:09
police found more plastic ties the keys
00:32:12
to Jays van Tonya's driver's license and
00:32:15
a half empty box of ammunition
00:32:17
significantly they also found a pair of
00:32:19
plastic surgical gloves he leaves those
00:32:22
behind as basically a sign to the police
00:32:25
that you needn't look for fingerprints
00:32:27
because I wore these gloves and he has
00:32:30
confidence that there's nothing that's
00:32:31
gonna connect him with these crimes even
00:32:35
after they found tan yeah yeah we hoped
00:32:38
against hope that maybe they were gonna
00:32:40
find Jani I mean alive
00:32:45
I guess you know what's not very likely
00:32:48
but you have to keep opening
00:32:54
Jays body was found on Thanksgiving Day
00:33:01
he had been definitely murdered it was
00:33:04
very obvious
00:33:05
we found that Jaya died due to
00:33:08
strangulation he'd been beaten his hands
00:33:12
had been bound with some electrical tie
00:33:14
wraps plastic tie wraps we think the way
00:33:17
that Jay died was indicative of things
00:33:20
that we've seen before inside the prison
00:33:23
walls and the things we found on Jay
00:33:26
certainly raised a suspicion that the
00:33:30
person or people who did this have been
00:33:32
in the prison system before without
00:33:34
telling you anything else that's
00:33:36
definitely a possibility
00:33:40
police believe it most likely that Jay
00:33:42
and Tanya made their fatal round oval
00:33:44
with a killer on the 10:20 p.m. ferry
00:33:47
from Bremerton to Seattle
00:33:50
we don't know the killer's intentions
00:33:52
when he first met these two we feel that
00:33:57
he was out to do some harm and certainly
00:34:00
to assault both Jay and Tanya and from
00:34:03
what we have found I think we can say
00:34:05
that he had set his sights on Tanya and
00:34:08
Jay was in the way yeah how about you
00:34:22
Hebert friendly young on their first
00:34:28
trip and I think easily fooled an easy
00:34:33
mark yeah what if you could do me a
00:34:35
favor it's pretty cold out there I want
00:34:38
to live a couple miles from ferry dock
00:34:40
can you give me right
00:34:40
a person could make contact with him in
00:34:44
the lounge on the on the ferry boat just
00:34:47
asking for a ride across the Puget Sound
00:34:49
I think it's safe to say that by the
00:34:51
time they exited the ferry in downtown
00:34:53
Seattle they probably were in the
00:34:55
company of the man that killed him
00:34:59
it would seem to me that it's logical
00:35:01
that the person has committed crimes
00:35:03
like this in the past and been
00:35:05
successful at them and having been
00:35:08
successful I would certainly say that
00:35:10
it's likely they don't continue to do
00:35:12
them she does not want to be caught he
00:35:15
uses gloves for example to not leave an
00:35:18
obvious forensic fingerprints that makes
00:35:22
him very dangerous in my view
00:35:28
[Music]
00:35:30
but the killer might have made one
00:35:33
mistake he may have taken Jays black
00:35:35
waist blank ski jacket red piping on the
00:35:37
sleeves Tonya's olive-drab de pack when
00:35:41
there is a chance of someone may have
00:35:43
noticed him with these incriminating
00:35:44
items one final note on this sad story
00:35:53
over the Christmas holidays just four
00:35:56
weeks after the murder of their children
00:35:58
Jay and Tanya's families each received a
00:36:01
morbid greeting card these cars were
00:36:03
filled with taunting descriptions of the
00:36:05
murders and there Arthur claimed
00:36:07
responsibility for the killings to date
00:36:11
19 of these greeting cards have been
00:36:13
mailed over three different holidays the
00:36:15
writer remains a complete mystery
00:36:18
postmark from New York Los Angeles and
00:36:21
Seattle all of these cars were written
00:36:23
by the same author the handwriting in
00:36:28
these letters and the cards is very
00:36:32
distinctive and there are some phrases
00:36:34
that are very distinctive also
00:36:39
hallelujah bloody Jesus is a favorite
00:36:41
phrase of his we have not found
00:36:46
something as of yet in these greeting
00:36:49
cards that would tell us absolutely for
00:36:51
sure that the person who sent them is
00:36:54
sending them names to kill her we don't
00:36:57
know he just continues to to make life
00:37:01
miserable for these parents who have
00:37:03
lost her children
00:37:04
[Music]
00:37:13
next the search for salvatore michael
00:37:16

00:37:18
masterminded a multi-million dollar drug
00:37:20

[Applause]
00:38:02
when they entered the room the man they
00:38:04
were looking for had vanished
00:38:07
Salvatore Michael Cara Juana is a
00:38:09
suspected narcotics smuggler who
00:38:11
allegedly has ties to organized crime
00:38:13
since 1984 he has been the object of one
00:38:16
of the most intensive manhunt of the
00:38:18
history of US law enforcement
00:38:21
Cara Juana is currently on the US
00:38:23
Marshall's top 15 fugitives list they
00:38:26
also believe he is being sought by the
00:38:28
New England mob when the federal agents
00:38:31
found Carolina's room at the Motor Inn
00:38:32
empty they had first suspected that he
00:38:34
might have been the victim of a contract
00:38:35
hit however the authorities also believe
00:38:38
it is possible that Cara Juana stages
00:38:40
own disappearance to look like a
00:38:42
contract killing so we could throw a law
00:38:44
enforcement office trail heroin is
00:38:49
criminal history dates back to 1954 when
00:38:52
he was charged with armed robbery and
00:38:54
possession of firearms by the late 70s
00:38:57
he had moved into narcotics as a mob
00:38:59
soldier with Raymond Patriarca family in
00:39:01
New England
00:39:03
mr. Cara Juana was involved in the
00:39:05
distribution approximately 40 million
00:39:07
dollars worth of marijuana we have
00:39:10
testimony from just one distributor that
00:39:12
in one particular operation in 1979 he
00:39:15
himself brought four million dollars to
00:39:17
mr. Carolina
00:39:18
he's Sparky let me see what we got going
00:39:20
here in these marijuana operations with
00:39:23
cotton ball he was with the supervisor
00:39:26
Carroll Juana would show up on the scene
00:39:27
himself at the stash house before the
00:39:29
marijuana was sent out and talk to his
00:39:31
piece we gotta make sure it was weighed
00:39:33
correctly make sure the quality was good
00:39:35
he would then tell his distributor that
00:39:38
I want X amount of dollars for each
00:39:39
pound of marijuana the tooth I think
00:39:42
would be good do you think
00:39:44
250-pound right Freddie don't keep me
00:39:48
waiting
00:39:49
be there carry guns big with guns he was
00:39:52
big with threats he would threaten to
00:39:54
kill you
00:39:55
there was no question if you messed up
00:39:56
he threatened to kill you kara Juana was
00:40:01
finally arrested on November 27th 1983
00:40:03
his smuggling operation had begun to
00:40:06
collapse with the arrest of several key
00:40:08
associates whose testimony led to an 11
00:40:10
count secret grand jury indictment
00:40:12
against him
00:40:15
kara Juana was charged with drug
00:40:17
trafficking under the kingpin statute
00:40:19
the federal law which could have meant
00:40:21
life imprisonment bail was set at
00:40:25
$500,000 marijuana easily raised $50,000
00:40:29
to post bond at least the same day
00:40:33

00:40:36
grapples second 1984 two days before his
00:40:40
trial was to begin
00:40:41
Salvatore Michael Cara Juana disappeared
00:40:45
two of his close associates signed
00:40:49
agreements with the government to
00:40:50
cooperate and testify I think he felt
00:40:52
that our case was much stronger with
00:40:54
these two witnesses coming into the case
00:40:56
to testify against him and I believe he
00:40:58
just didn't want to come in and face
00:41:00
them because I think he felt that he
00:41:02
would face some serious time in jail in
00:41:06
1980 firing a multi-agency task force
00:41:09
was established by the Drug Enforcement
00:41:10
Administration the IRS the FBI and the
00:41:14
US Marshal Service exclusively to
00:41:16
investigate the Cara Juana case they
00:41:19
confirmed her smuggling drugs was only
00:41:20
the facade for a vast criminal labyrinth
00:41:23
kara Juana was laundering enormous
00:41:25
amounts of money and was himself a
00:41:26
multimillionaire On February 6 1987
00:41:32
federal agents of local police raided
00:41:34
Carolina's home in Peabody Massachusetts
00:41:36
a house is like a fortress elaborate
00:41:39
security systems and several hidden
00:41:41
vaults crammed full of weapons and
00:41:43
financial papers
00:41:44
agents found evidence that Cara Juana
00:41:47
was using the alias of John Michael
00:41:48
Hurley armed with this information
00:41:51
investigators were able within days the
00:41:53
trakcare Awana to East Hampton
00:41:55
Connecticut condominium by the time they
00:41:58
arrived Arowana had cleaned the place
00:41:59
out and vanished for the next three
00:42:02
months
00:42:02
he continued to elude the law he's very
00:42:06
smart guy he's probably wanting the most
00:42:08
cunning and sly fugitives that we've
00:42:11
come across in a very long time he knows
00:42:14
what he's doing he keeps himself up to
00:42:16
date on all the new things that are
00:42:18
coming out he's a very smart individual
00:42:23
Asians discovered that while Cara Juana
00:42:25
was in hiding he used computer
00:42:27
technology to launder money and
00:42:29
communicate with his business associates
00:42:31
and his wife he used things like
00:42:33
computer bulletin board systems then he
00:42:35
knew it was very difficult for us to get
00:42:37
into he would talk to his wife up in
00:42:39
Massachusetts from Connecticut and they
00:42:41
would go through these computer bulletin
00:42:43
board systems and she would take the
00:42:45
message decode it and then it would be
00:42:47
wiped off that bulletin board system
00:42:51
finally in May of 1987 an anonymous tip
00:42:54
led authorities to the motor in and
00:42:56
Groton Connecticut we had determined he
00:43:00
was using the alias Vincent spirito and
00:43:03
based upon the information we received
00:43:04
from the manager and the fact that the
00:43:07
alias name was registered there at that
00:43:09
Motor Inn we used that as probable cause
00:43:13
to get a search warrant to enter the
00:43:14
apartment
00:43:32
[Music]
00:43:45
when we first got into the room it
00:43:48
appeared like GZ you just got up to get
00:43:51
a newspaper that he could be coming back
00:43:52
any minute
00:43:55
all secure but once we started looking
00:43:58
at specific items in the room such as
00:44:00
the newspaper and spoiled food it looked
00:44:03
like he hadn't been there for a couple
00:44:04
of weeks
00:44:05
look at this newspapers dated May 9
00:44:08
we found clothes in the closet we found
00:44:11
the John Michael Hurley identification
00:44:13
we also found a sawed-off shotgun with
00:44:16
four shells up in the barrel so it was
00:44:18
ready to be what we call combat loaded
00:44:20
we also located a briefcase in the
00:44:24
briefcase
00:44:25
was a semi-automatic 22 and cash from
00:44:31
what we found at the motor and you could
00:44:33
assume that he had been killed by
00:44:35
organized crime people who thought that
00:44:37
if he was caught he might talk or he had
00:44:40
all these records that could implicate
00:44:41
them in different illegal transactions
00:44:44
but we don't have the body and if it was
00:44:47
an organized crime hit I would think
00:44:49
that they would want to leave the body
00:44:50
behind so that we wouldn't keep poking
00:44:53
our noses into his business which
00:44:55
eventually would lead back to them kara
00:44:59
Juana's van was missing so were the keys
00:45:02
to the van his wallet and a camera case
00:45:04
he was known to carry with him at all
00:45:06
times in the camera case reportedly he
00:45:09
carried an Uzi submachine gun a month
00:45:13
later kara Juana's van turned up at a
00:45:15
police impound leblanc it had been
00:45:17
abandoned at a connecticut truck stop
00:45:19
when marshals dusted for fingerprints
00:45:22
they found the van had been wiped clean
00:45:24
he could very well have been killed in
00:45:27
May of 87 but we really don't have
00:45:30
anything to point to that we don't have
00:45:31
anybody coming forward and saying yes I
00:45:33
saw him abducted from the truck stop
00:45:36
when you chase fugitives that are this
00:45:39
complex
00:45:40
one of the things they like to do is
00:45:42
leak the word out to you that hey this
00:45:44
guy's dead
00:45:45
so that you don't continue looking for
00:45:47
him as hard as you were if you knew he
00:45:48
was alive it appears that he's done the
00:45:52
very smart thing
00:45:53
he hasn't maintained contact with the
00:45:55
people that he knew before we were
00:45:56
chasing him what we're looking for
00:46:00
somebody to come forward and tell us
00:46:01
that they have seen Salvatore Carolina
00:46:04
alive after May of 87
00:46:08
Salvatore Michael Cara Juana is 51 years
00:46:10
old six feet tall and 175 pounds he has
00:46:14
brown eyes and graying black hair have
00:46:16
been treated for a hyper thyroid
00:46:18
condition he's used the alias as John
00:46:21
Michael Hurley
00:46:22
Vincent's burrito and face Cara Juana is
00:46:25
a licensed airplane pilot computer and
00:46:28
electronics expert he should be
00:46:29
considered armed and extremely dangerous
00:46:34
Cara Juana allegedly holds damaging
00:46:36
information about many highly placed
00:46:38
organized crime figures and the federal
00:46:40
authorities hope they get to him before
00:46:42
the mob does
00:46:43
[Music]
00:46:52
tonight we have seen four stories
00:46:54
without endings four stories in which
00:46:56
ordinary people have been thrust into
00:46:57
the center of an unsolved mystery
00:46:59
perhaps someone tonight can help them
00:47:01
perhaps they were watching
00:47:03
perhaps as human
