March 16, 2022 / 46:45

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers six cases, including the disappearance of Jeremy Bright, the murder of Officer John Martin, the mystery of Canadian prospector Dan Willens, and the case of fugitive Leo Cooley. It also features the abduction of Michaela Garrett and unexplained phenomena experienced by retirees Jim and Kay Tatum.

The first case focuses on 14-year-old Jeremy Bright, who vanished from a county fair in Myrtle Point, Oregon, in 1986. Despite numerous rumors and theories about his fate, including possible foul play, his disappearance remains unsolved.

Next, the episode recounts the tragic story of Officer John Martin, who was shot while on patrol in Virginia in 1988. After a lengthy investigation, a suspect named David Wayne Mills was arrested and charged with his murder.

The episode also discusses Dan Willens, a Canadian prospector who disappeared in 1936, leaving behind a potentially unclaimed fortune. Investigators are still searching for his heirs, who may be entitled to millions.

Additionally, the episode covers the abduction of Michaela Garrett in California and the experiences of Jim and Kay Tatum, who encountered unexplained noises and objects moving in their home, leading them to believe they were experiencing poltergeist activity.

TL;DR

Six unsolved cases including a missing boy, a murdered officer, and paranormal activity in a couple's home.

mid-august 1986.
00:02:33
jeremy was never seen again since that

and a jeremy bright and close friend
00:03:31
john it was one of the high points of
00:03:33
the year
00:03:35
normally jeremy lived a hundred miles
00:03:37
away in grants pass where his mother
00:03:38
worked
00:03:39
but during the week of the fair he and
00:03:41
his younger sister were staying with
00:03:43
their stepfather ollie in myrtle point
00:03:45
on friday august 15th holy went to work
00:03:48
before dawn and didn't see jeremy lee
00:03:50
for the fair
00:03:52
but that day a handful of people saw
00:03:54
jeremy and johnny enjoying the
00:03:56
festivities
00:04:01
around 4 45 that same thursday jeremy
00:04:04
placed a long-distance call to his
00:04:06
mother diane
00:04:07
he told her he was having a terrific
00:04:09
time at the fair
00:04:11
she told jeremy she'd be back in myrtle
00:04:13
point in two days to pick him up
00:04:18
five hours later at 9 40 p.m jeremy went
00:04:21
to a local tavern owned by his
00:04:22
grandmother to meet his stepfather now
00:04:24
home from work he asked to borrow some
00:04:27
money from him
00:04:28
here take some of this
00:04:30
thanks
00:04:31
this was the last time jeremy was ever
00:04:33
seen by his family
00:04:36
you behave yourself
00:04:38
[Applause]
00:04:40
two days later on saturday diane arrived
00:04:42
in myrtle point to meet jeremy
00:04:45
he never showed up
00:04:49
i went and got my car and i went to
00:04:51
ole's house at kids and stepdad's house
00:04:54
and i went in and on the tv set
00:04:57
was his house keys from our grants pass
00:05:00
apartment and his wallet
00:05:02
and his new watch that he had told me
00:05:04
he'd bought
00:05:05
i knew when i found those things that he
00:05:07
was around somewhere because he wouldn't
00:05:10
leave without him
00:05:15
as a carnival played on diane's fears
00:05:17
began to escalate
00:05:19
[Music]
00:05:20
on saturday night she contacted the
00:05:22
police
00:05:25
at first they believed her son had
00:05:26
succumbed to the romantic lure of the
00:05:28
carnival and had run away
00:05:32
he did like the fair
00:05:34
there was the thought that perhaps he
00:05:36
was hiding out intending to leave with
00:05:38
the fair
00:05:39
people and
00:05:40
i've explored that possibility in every
00:05:43
way that i can think of i can't
00:05:47
lose sight of the fact that it is
00:05:48
possible that he
00:05:50
left with members of that fair troupe
00:05:52
however in this particular case i've
00:05:54
talked to
00:05:56
family members and and friends of his
00:05:58
that knew him well
00:06:00
and he was just not from what i can
00:06:02
learn the type of a kid who would have
00:06:04
struck out on his own
00:06:06
on sunday august 17 1986 the fair folded
00:06:10
up its tent
00:06:11
myrtle point returned to normal
00:06:14
within days ominous rumors concerning
00:06:16
jeremy's disappearance began to surface
00:06:24
the week of the fair was a time for
00:06:26
partying
00:06:28
according to one rumor jeremy attended
00:06:30
one of these parties and was offered a
00:06:32
beer laced with a powerful illegal drug
00:06:35
either
00:06:38
hey we're looking for a beer yeah
00:06:40
hey don't open the other one
00:06:42
there's one already open right here you
00:06:44
mean i can have this sure
00:06:46
knock yourself out
00:06:48
i've identified at least two and perhaps
00:06:50
three parties where jeremy was present
00:06:53
that
00:06:54
the overdose theory could have occurred
00:06:56
in
00:06:57
it was reported that jeremy had a heart
00:06:58
murmur and therefore a stimulant of some
00:07:01
kind might have uh done some bodily
00:07:04
damage to him just just by his sheer
00:07:06
taking it
00:07:09
an anonymous source told the police
00:07:11
another story
00:07:14
he claimed that three local tufts had
00:07:16
shown up and harassed jeremy and his
00:07:18
friends while they played in a swimming
00:07:19
hole
00:07:21
then things went terribly wrong
00:07:24
is that a gun
00:07:25
what this
00:07:28
it's a toy
00:07:29
it was at the jail where an inmate
00:07:31
related to me the information that he
00:07:34
had heard wherein one individual from
00:07:36
the myrtle point area was
00:07:39
target practicing or shooting
00:07:41
indiscriminately in the water in the
00:07:42
area where jeremy was uh was swimming
00:07:44
all right i'm just gonna sight it don't
00:07:46
move show me what you're made of now
00:07:51
that's better pierce's ear yeah i bet
00:07:54
you can you think so yeah
00:07:56
all right all right i'm gonna try this
00:07:58
look good in it
00:08:02
[Music]
00:08:07
[Applause]
00:08:15
they subsequently took him to a
00:08:17
cabin maybe within
00:08:19
10 miles of the myrtle point area and
00:08:21
attempted to nurse him back to health to
00:08:24
no avail that he died as a result of
00:08:26
that injury either from
00:08:28
loss of blood or from
00:08:30
infection or what have you
00:08:34
[Music]
00:08:37
that
00:08:38
same
00:08:39
source through the jail indicated that
00:08:41
his uh body would be found within 200
00:08:44
feet of this cabin in a in a shallow
00:08:47
grave
00:08:49
police searched the area surrounding the
00:08:51
cabin and found nothing
00:08:55
all the rumors were hard to handle all
00:08:57
of them are hard to think about
00:08:59
every time i'd hear a new one i'd have
00:09:01
nightmares for a week or so
00:09:04
the one
00:09:05
that i hope
00:09:07
is not what happened
00:09:08
is one where he suffered for two weeks
00:09:11
before he died
00:09:13
and they buried his body
00:09:16
because the thought of him suffering for
00:09:18
two weeks
00:09:20
just
00:09:21
makes me sick
00:09:24
there were two more strange clues
00:09:27
jeremy was last seen by his family on
00:09:29
thursday night the following night the
00:09:32
sister of jeremy's friend johnny had a
00:09:34
disturbing encounter
00:09:37
it was friday night of the fair and it
00:09:40
was between midnight and one
00:09:42
when we were leaving my sister's
00:09:44
apartment and we came down the stairs
00:09:46
and we got to the last stair
00:09:48
and
00:09:49
we almost ran into one of the
00:09:50
neighborhood guys
00:09:52
and
00:09:53
i jumped back because it startled me
00:09:55
because he was completely covered in
00:09:56
blood and i mean it was just all over
00:09:59
him and it kind of scared me what
00:10:01
happened to you
00:10:03
well this
00:10:04
he goes oh this this happened hours ago
00:10:06
and he just laughed and then he went
00:10:08
into one of the apartments
00:10:12
a half hour after this encounter johnny
00:10:14
arrived at the same building where
00:10:15
another sister lived according to her he
00:10:18
was overwrought and terrified but didn't
00:10:20
want to explain
00:10:22
whether it is just coincidence or
00:10:24
whether they're directly related to
00:10:25
jeremy's disappearance
00:10:27
is another one of the the mysteries that
00:10:30
you still have to sort through to try to
00:10:32
determine what indeed did happen
00:10:37
the three or four people whose names
00:10:39
keep reappearing in all the rumors and
00:10:42
all of the reports
00:10:44
they're not
00:10:45
exactly what anybody would call pillars
00:10:47
of society
00:10:48
but as long as these men are out on the
00:10:50
street they can hurt somebody else's
00:10:52
child the same as they hurt mine
00:10:56
and if nobody comes forward that's
00:10:57
leaving them out there and if they did
00:11:00
to my son what people are saying they
00:11:03
did
00:11:03
and what they've been heard themselves
00:11:05
say that they did they've got no
00:11:07
business on the public streets
00:11:10
and we can't do nothing until we
00:11:14
get the whole story
00:11:17
and make them pay for what they did to
00:11:18
my boy
00:11:20
i i would just encourage anyone
00:11:24
especially those people who i feel have
00:11:26
information that would help this
00:11:28
investigation greatly
00:11:30
to just simply have the courage to say
00:11:32
yeah i'm scared to death
00:11:34
but in a case like this
00:11:36
my being scared doesn't warrant this
00:11:38
family's pain
00:11:40
[Music]
00:12:02
if you've ever been stopped for a
00:12:03
traffic ticket you might have noticed
00:12:05
that the officer approached cautiously
00:12:07
imagine what's going through his mind
00:12:10
you know who he is because of his
00:12:11
uniform but he has no idea who you are
00:12:15
to him it could be another routine
00:12:16
traffic violation
00:12:18
then again it could be that one case
00:12:20
where the unexpected happens and his
00:12:22
life is on the line
00:12:24
our next story is about just such a case
00:12:27
it happened in a rural county in
00:12:28
virginia where a police officer not been
00:12:30
killed for over 20 years
00:12:32
until last november
00:12:35
[Music]
00:12:38
in the early morning hours of friday
00:12:40
november the 4th 1988 patrolman john
00:12:43
martin a 17-year veteran of the lee
00:12:45
county virginia sheriff's department was
00:12:48
making his regular rounds
00:12:50
when he noticed something unusual
00:12:52
[Music]
00:12:56
604 to jones
00:12:59
go ahead 604.
00:13:02
i'll be checking the park vehicle out at
00:13:03
the western lee county health clinic
00:13:08
[Music]
00:13:10
john martin reported to
00:13:13
our dispatcher in jonesville at 2 58 a.m
00:13:16
on the morning of november 4
00:13:19
that he was checking a car parked behind
00:13:22
the lee county
00:13:24
health clinic in ewing virginia
00:13:28
604 jones
00:13:31
this vehicle just pulled out on
00:13:35
and then he came back and said that the
00:13:37
car was moving out on him and then he
00:13:40
was stopping it about halfway down the
00:13:42
driveway and that it was a large
00:13:45
light brown car possibly a cadillac and
00:13:49
he couldn't give the license number
00:13:50
because it was on the inside of the car
00:13:53
in the back window
00:13:56
that was a last transmission john martin
00:13:59
made to the dispatcher
00:14:01
authorities believe that martin left his
00:14:03
patrol car and approached the driver to
00:14:05
question him see your operator's last
00:14:07
complete
00:14:17
[Music]
00:14:27
604.
00:14:32
he didn't respond to the radio so we had
00:14:34
an officer probably seven miles away
00:14:37
that we sent to check on him
00:14:43
when i arrived at his location i found
00:14:45
officer martin
00:14:46
lying in the driveway of the clinic
00:14:48
at the time of arrival i didn't know
00:14:51
what had happened to him when i got to
00:14:53
him he told me doug i've been shot
00:14:55
number bad
00:14:57
i contacted the dispatcher
00:14:59
and had a rescue squad dispatched
00:15:02
on where you're going to be all right
00:15:03
you know i knew he'd been seriously
00:15:05
wounded
00:15:06
and
00:15:07
of course he was a good friend of mine
00:15:09
as well as a fellow officer
00:15:11
i knew the point when i found him he was
00:15:14
probably critically injured and it was
00:15:15
very important that i'd be able to
00:15:18
maintain the scene and to be able to
00:15:20
get what information i could from him
00:15:21
while he was conscious and that was the
00:15:23
most important thing to do at the time
00:15:25
and that's what i attempted to do
00:15:27
did you see who did it or did you get a
00:15:29
description of the vehicle
00:15:31
he was in his mid-20s
00:15:33
had a mesh tag
00:15:35
i'd ask him about the animal being about
00:15:36
the tag
00:15:37
he advised me the tag was in the real
00:15:39
window that it was a dealer tag
00:15:41
however he could not read
00:15:44
the registration numbers from the tag
00:15:47
but he was able to give me a rough
00:15:48
description of the vehicle as a buick
00:15:51
light brown or tan
00:15:53
and it was a buick from the 1970 to 1977
00:15:57
perhaps one of the large buicks
00:16:01
martin was able to give officer parsons
00:16:03
one final piece of information about the
00:16:05
lysis plate
00:16:07
it read land of lincoln which is the
00:16:09
motto for the state of illinois
00:16:12
did you shoot into the car or shoot
00:16:13
anyone yes i shot at the vehicle
00:16:17
he had advised me he had emptied his gun
00:16:19
into the car i checked his weapon and it
00:16:21
was empty he had fired all six rounds
00:16:23
from his revolver
00:16:27
martin was rushed to the nearest
00:16:28
hospital 22 miles away suffering from
00:16:31
three bullet wounds
00:16:33
doctors removed a 44 caliber bullet from
00:16:35
his body but he lapsed into a coma
00:16:40
[Music]
00:16:41
three days later
00:16:43
john martin died
00:16:47
[Music]
00:16:52
on november the 10th john martin was
00:16:54
laid to rest with full honors
00:16:59
police officers from seven states and

[Music]
00:17:11
i just
00:17:13
thought it wouldn't happen to him
00:17:15
and
00:17:16
we had talked about it but
00:17:19
it don't feel real
00:17:21
cause i just feel like our officer's job
00:17:23
is to protect other people
00:17:26
and that's all he was doing
00:17:29
but we just out of this we're hoping
00:17:32
that we can possibly catch whoever done
00:17:34
it
00:17:36
that's our main priority right now
00:17:39
that's all we want
00:17:43
two weeks ago a man believed to be john
00:17:45
martin's murderer was arrested by
00:17:47
sheriff's deputies in illinois
00:17:52
on november 5th effingham illinois
00:17:54
police impounded a stolen car burnt
00:17:56
almost beyond recognition
00:17:58
inside they discovered evidence that
00:18:00
this was the car that was used in john
00:18:02
martin's killing
00:18:04
the
00:18:05
lee county sheriff's office was
00:18:07
immediately contacted and
00:18:09
their first question was does your burnt
00:18:11
car have a bullet hole in the door and
00:18:12
our answer was yes
00:18:14
and at which point they decided to send
00:18:16
a team of investigators
00:18:18
to effingham and continue the
00:18:19
investigation
00:18:21
police believe that the bullet holes
00:18:23
were caused by john martin's gun
00:18:26
during their investigation authorities
00:18:28
uncovered information that linked a 24
00:18:30
year old man named david wayne mills to
00:18:33
the car
00:18:35
during a search of the home where mills
00:18:36
was living investigators found
00:18:38
additional evidence connecting him to
00:18:40
the murder of john martin when mills
00:18:42
arrived home he was immediately arrested
00:18:45
mills admitted being present when
00:18:47
officer martin was killed but claims
00:18:49
that an accomplice fired the gun
00:18:51
this alleged accomplice has been
00:18:53
questioned but no formal charges have
00:18:54
been made
00:18:56
on january 5th mills was extradited back
00:18:59
to virginia where he is currently being
00:19:01
held without bail
00:19:02
during questioning he gave authorities
00:19:04
information which led them to a 44
00:19:06
caliber pistol
00:19:08
ballistics tests have confirmed this was
00:19:10
the gun that killed john martin
00:19:14
david wayne mills has been charged with
00:19:16
first-degree murder however the
00:19:17
prosecuting attorney may elevate the
00:19:19
charge to capital murder which carries a
00:19:21
death penalty

you about george marsh and charlie

00:19:54
fortunes
00:19:55
both cases were solved and legitimate
00:19:57
heirs came forward to claim their
00:19:59

00:20:00
tonight we have another missing air
00:20:01
story
00:20:02
dan willens a mysterious canadian
00:20:04
prospector spent a lifetime finding gold
00:20:07
according to public records he left an
00:20:09
unclaimed estate of nearly one hundred
00:20:10
thousand dollars but willen's wealth may
00:20:13
be worth much much more than that some
00:20:15
say as much as three million dollars and
00:20:18
as theirs may well be alive today in the

00:20:27
dan williams is one of thousands of men
00:20:29
who poured into canada wanting to strike
00:20:31
it rich
00:20:32
they came from all walks of life
00:20:36
between trucks in the wilderness they
00:20:38
settled in rough mining towns like haley
00:20:40
berry in ontario canada where dan
00:20:42
williams was well known by 1925. oh he's
00:20:45
not laughing
00:20:47
there we go aces twos nine
00:20:50
thrown together by fate and greed these
00:20:52
rough prospectors spent their nights
00:20:54
playing poker and their days hoping to
00:20:56
find that one strike that would make
00:20:58
their fortune
00:21:00
gentlemen the game is yours dan williams
00:21:02
and his closest friends relied on each
00:21:04
other to share information and mistakes
00:21:06
and claims
00:21:07
even they didn't know who dan williams
00:21:10
really was thanks a lot dan
00:21:12
he was very private
00:21:14
i don't know if i ever listen to him
00:21:16
ever brag about himself never
00:21:19
never
00:21:20
or
00:21:21
comment about as fast never never
00:21:24
i consider him as a gentleman gentleman
00:21:28
always well dressed and his walk and his
00:21:31
stance
00:21:33
i would
00:21:34
take her to be a military man good night
00:21:37
really good here dan williams had a
00:21:39
partner bill costner
00:21:41
one night another miner pulled out a map
00:21:44
he told dan and bill that there might be
00:21:46
gold in red lake
00:21:48
850 miles to the west you've heard of
00:21:51
red lake
00:21:52
heard of it i've heard of it yes
00:21:55
well here it is mm-hmm right here
00:21:58
i've staked some claims on this point
00:22:01
and i've got some real good showings
00:22:05
i think we should go there
00:22:07
i think you're right dan williams and
00:22:09
bill karchner journeyed for more than a
00:22:11
month with a desolate outback
00:22:16
in the next year williams and his
00:22:18
partner staked 12 claims around red lake
00:22:22
finally their hard work turned up tiny
00:22:24
glints in the sand that meant gold
00:22:28
from that small beginning one of
00:22:29
canada's most profitable gold mines
00:22:31
sprang to life
00:22:33
and with it the community of red lake
00:22:36
the koshner woolens mine drew 45 million
00:22:38
dollars worth of gold
00:22:40
worth a billion dollars in today's
00:22:42
values
00:22:44
running a lucrative mining company
00:22:46
didn't interest dan his real love was
00:22:48
panning for gold
00:22:50
dan williams continued his solitary
00:22:52
prospecting
00:22:53
often he disappeared in the wilderness
00:22:55
alone for months at a time
00:22:57
still staking claims and sifting through
00:22:59
sand
00:23:01
there was another side to dan williams
00:23:04
the rough outdoorsman led a double life
00:23:06
as a gentleman of culture and breeding
00:23:08
every autumn he take over an entire
00:23:10
floor of the elegant king edward hotel
00:23:12
in toronto wax his mustache and
00:23:15
entertain his friends with lavish
00:23:16
amounts of champagne
00:23:21
had a social life that very few people
00:23:23
knew anything about i think and he loved
00:23:26
life he there's none of the vote he
00:23:28
loved life he liked social ability there
00:23:30
was no nothing about this
00:23:32
from prospector to gentlemen and back
00:23:34
again dan williams kept up this double
00:23:36
life for years
00:23:39
in the autumn of 1936 dan williams
00:23:41
mysteriously vanished while on one of
00:23:43
his prospecting trips
00:23:46
baffled by his partner's absence bill
00:23:48
koshner began to search for willems
00:23:51
he said he went to his cabin and found
00:23:54
everything
00:23:55
immaculately in place
00:24:04
he
00:24:06
got that eerie feeling that he had just
00:24:09
left things in place and
00:24:11
was gone and wouldn't be found
00:24:16
when he disappeared
00:24:18
the story was that
00:24:20
he'd taken a trip into the bush and he
00:24:22
was never heard of again he was lost
00:24:25
that he perished
00:24:29
now dan was a good
00:24:30
bushman and he wasn't a weak man he was
00:24:33
a very strong man
00:24:35
and i don't think for one minute that he
00:24:37
was lost
00:24:40
i think he went back to england and took
00:24:42
his social place in life
00:24:44
i'm in for five five is that all um some
00:24:48
believe that dan may have been killed
00:24:49
after a poker game
00:24:51
and his body thrown down an abandoned
00:24:53
mine shaft
00:24:55
i think i'm gonna take a chance if you
00:24:57
got any poker game it's just hard to say
00:24:59
what might have happened give me the one
00:25:00
i want money
00:25:02
and losers
00:25:04
don't work too well together especially
00:25:06
if they lose their money i'll see you
00:25:07
five and i'll race 20.
00:25:10
he was a good poker player
00:25:13
[Music]
00:25:18
the truth of dan williams disappearance
00:25:20
remains as elusive as his past
00:25:22
only a handful of clues exist
00:25:25
he appeared to be from england
00:25:27
he was skilled as a horseman and at
00:25:29
cards
00:25:30
he never married
00:25:32
one prospector believes he may have had
00:25:34
a sister in england
00:25:36
his unclaimed estate was valued 1936 at
00:25:39
71
00:25:40
000. this money held by the public
00:25:43
trustee of ontario is now worth nearly
00:25:45
one hundred thousand dollars
00:25:48
but we know that willian's owned half
00:25:50
the shares in the costner williams mine
00:25:52
that his partner bill brought back most
00:25:54
of those shares seven years after
00:25:55
willems vanished
00:25:58
those shares alone would have been worth
00:26:00
at least eight hundred and fifty
00:26:01
thousand dollars in 1943
00:26:04
45 years later it could be worth much
00:26:07
more
00:26:08
yet no one can locate the money
00:26:11
terry howes a toronto-based tracer of
00:26:14
missing heirs has learned that dan
00:26:16
willens may not be his true name
00:26:19
we have reason to think that his real
00:26:20
name was dalton thomas williams
00:26:23
and we feel that there are heirs either
00:26:26
in britain or the us
00:26:28
somewhere in the world
00:26:30
today if an air turned up and we have
00:26:32
every reason to think that their heirs
00:26:34
are going to turn up
00:26:36
the estate could be worth in the
00:26:37
vicinity of three million dollars
00:26:39
depending upon the interest that's been
00:26:41
paid over the years
00:26:43
update within days of our broadcast
00:26:46
davey willens a new york businessman
00:26:48
called our 800 number claiming he might
00:26:50
be one of the heirs to dan willen's
00:26:52
fortune
00:26:55
my grandfather we have determined came
00:26:57
from the uk to ontario in 1895
00:27:01
at that time he was 11 years of age
00:27:04
we believe he traveled with another
00:27:06
family member and we also have been told
00:27:09
that there was a cousin someplace up in
00:27:11
the outback of ontario but there was
00:27:13
never any contact with that individual
00:27:15
through the years so when this unsolved
00:27:18
mysteries program aired and this dan
00:27:21
willens a bushman from ontario was was
00:27:23
disclosed it certainly was an exciting
00:27:26
possible link for our family tree
00:27:28
searching
00:27:30
davey williams flew to toronto to meet
00:27:32
joe perkins one of dan willen's last
00:27:34
surviving friends he brought along
00:27:36
photographs of his grandfather harold
00:27:38
wilders and his great-grandfather john
00:27:40
williams to see if there was a family
00:27:41
resemblance
00:27:44
it's uncanny i
00:27:46
couldn't believe it
00:27:47
the similarity of the face
00:27:50
the nose
00:27:51
spacing of the eyes
00:27:53
forehead
00:27:55
and
00:27:56
i think if you took the beard off the
00:27:58
old man
00:28:01
they'd look like twins
00:28:03
indeed there does seem to be a strong
00:28:05
resemblance our great-grandfather john
00:28:08
grandfather harold and prospector dan
00:28:10
willens all-blood relatives
00:28:12
is davey and heir to dan willen's
00:28:14
fortune
00:28:16
certainly money is important to
00:28:18
everybody and if the ontario government
00:28:20
is holding considerable assets that
00:28:22
could rightfully be claimed by a willens
00:28:24
then i'd like to see that happen i don't
00:28:26
know if it'll be me and my cousins or
00:28:28
not but maybe now we can get some
00:28:31
willances to come forward and maybe we
00:28:33
do have a strong case to be made and
00:28:36
certainly we are going to take the next
00:28:37
steps to pursue that possibility
00:28:40
[Music]
00:28:50
next the story of leo curry a volunteer
00:28:53
softball umpire active in his local
00:28:55
church
00:28:56
and a suspected murderer an arsonist who
00:28:58
has eluded the fbi for 10 years

00:29:10
on march 19 1975 in richmond virginia
00:29:13
a bodyguard named chuck kernighan was
00:29:15
murdered
00:29:17
and his body placed in a trunk
00:29:21
police were told the kernighan's corpse
00:29:23
was driven to the rappahannock river
00:29:25
weighed down with a bumper from a 57
00:29:27
chevrolet and thrown overboard
00:29:30
kernighan's body has never been found
00:29:33
the police believe that local
00:29:34
businessman leo curry was responsible
00:29:37
for this contract killing
00:29:42
in the mid 70s the same leo curry was a
00:29:44
volunteer softball empire and active in
00:29:46
his local church
00:29:48
leah was married with four children and
00:29:50
a member of the american legion
00:29:53
[Applause]
00:29:54
leo was a nice guy to many people
00:29:58
there are people that are close to him
00:30:00
that characterize him as a as a caring
00:30:04
uh sensitive individual however our
00:30:07
investigation turned up another leo
00:30:09
corey and that is the leader of a
00:30:11
racketeering enterprise who made a
00:30:13
living committing crimes
00:30:16
then on april 20th 1979 leo corey was
00:30:20
placed on the fbi's 10 most wanted list
00:30:22
as an accused murderer he has eluded the
00:30:25
authorities for 10 years
00:30:29
curry was a successful restaurant owner
00:30:31
who was fiercely competitive
00:30:33
reportedly he tried to force his rivals
00:30:35
out of business by sending in thugs to
00:30:38
terrorize the patrons
00:30:52
on january 15th 1977 corey's friends
00:30:56
brutally attacked innocent customers at
00:30:57
the mailbox restaurant
00:31:00
one person died and several were injured
00:31:03
it became apparent after a few months of
00:31:06
investigation that
00:31:08
leo corey was the very center of a
00:31:11
racketeering enterprise and that means
00:31:13
that he ran an organization that their
00:31:16
primary income was through illegal
00:31:18
purposes be it
00:31:19
frauds extortion murder
00:31:22
uh whatever but their income was uh was
00:31:25
from crime
00:31:27
while the fbi suspected corey was
00:31:29
responsible they could not indict him
00:31:31
because his inner circle was extremely
00:31:33
loyal
00:31:34
they often picked vulnerable groups like
00:31:36
the local gay community as victims for
00:31:38
his scams and extortions i want you to
00:31:41
kill a man for me
00:31:44
i'll do it
00:31:45
in october 1977
00:31:47
curry asked eddie lore to make a hit on
00:31:49
restaurant owner jim hilliar
00:31:55
[Applause]
00:31:59
a few days later cooley scheme backfired
00:32:01
when eddie lore was found hiding outside
00:32:03
jim hilliar's home
00:32:09
[Music]
00:32:11
[Applause]
00:32:13
[Music]
00:32:18
this arrest was a turning point for the
00:32:20
fbi and directly led to curry's
00:32:22
indictment i've heard enough okay we
00:32:24
later learned that he was there
00:32:27
allegedly at leo corey's behest to kill
00:32:31
hillary
00:32:32
to eliminate hilliar as competition in
00:32:35
the restaurant business what are your
00:32:37
options
00:32:39
laura agreed to work with the fbi
00:32:41
he was equipped with a hidden microphone
00:32:43
and the fbi secretly recorded a
00:32:45
conversation with curie for their
00:32:47
investigation
00:32:48
this is the actual recording of leo
00:32:50
curry's voice in the car
00:32:52
i can't understand
00:33:03
based on the surveillance tapes on
00:33:05
october 31st 1978
00:33:07
leo curry was indicted by a federal
00:33:09
grand jury
00:33:11
he was charged with murder attempted
00:33:13
murder extortion assault
00:33:16
racketeering fraud and arson
00:33:20
but the day before the charges came down
00:33:23
leo curry disappeared from richmond
00:33:25
virginia
00:33:26
leo corey is a very competitive person
00:33:30
and it would not surprise me and it's
00:33:32
been done in the past with top 10
00:33:33
fugitives where they pick up the phone
00:33:35
and call the agent who's
00:33:37
who's looking for them simply to tweak
00:33:39
their nose that would be an interesting
00:33:41
call i'd just like to know he's alive
00:33:45
over the last 10 years the fbi have
00:33:47
recorded 165 sightings of kuri mostly on
00:33:51
the east coast but also in brazil in the
00:33:53
middle east
00:33:55
the fbi are offering a 25 000 reward in
00:33:58
this case and have even put up
00:34:00
billboards around the country with leo
00:34:02
curry's face on them
00:34:04
his fbi file is now 38 volumes thick
00:34:08
what we come up with is the most logical
00:34:12
location
00:34:14
for leo corey and what he's doing is
00:34:17
probably
00:34:19
drugs and we believe he's still
00:34:22
closely associated with the gay
00:34:24
community

00:34:48
on november 19th 1988 a nine-year-old
00:34:51
girl named michaela joy gary and her
00:34:53
best friend were given five dollars by
00:34:55
the friend's father to spend at a local
00:34:57
market in hayward california a suburb of
00:34:59
oakland
00:35:00
the two girls rolled from michaela's
00:35:02
house to the market on their scooters
00:35:06
mikaela came and asked if she could go
00:35:09
and i said yes and she jumped up and
00:35:11
down and said oh goody goody
00:35:14
they went to the market and that's the
00:35:16
last time we've seen her
00:35:19
although mikira's house was only four
00:35:21
blocks from the market her parents
00:35:22
insisted she be accompanied by a friend
00:35:26
she usually made us a trip to the store
00:35:27
at least once a day or every other day
00:35:29
or so she'd get a friend and go up there
00:35:31
on her scooters we never let her go to
00:35:33
the store by herself she always had to
00:35:35
be with somebody
00:35:41
[Music]
00:35:43
when they came out of the store
00:35:44
michaela's scooter was gone
00:35:48
[Music]
00:35:50
it was over by a car and when she went
00:35:51
over to get the scooter a man stepped
00:35:54
out of the car and grabbed her from
00:35:55
behind and threw her into the
00:36:00
[Music]
00:36:03
michaela's friend
00:36:05
went back into the store
00:36:06
advised the clerk in the store that her
00:36:09
friend had been kidnapped
00:36:12
they called the police
00:36:13
the biggest thing that makes this one a
00:36:15
little different than most
00:36:17
is that we do have a suspect description
00:36:20
we do have a suspect vehicle description
00:36:24
and we do have a witness that saw this
00:36:26
take place
00:36:27
look at the pictures and see if there's
00:36:29
michaela's friend was shown mug shots of
00:36:31
possible suspects but was unable to
00:36:33
identify any of them
00:36:35
she was however able to assist police
00:36:37
artists in creating a composite of the
00:36:39
suspect
00:36:41
she described a white male age eighteen
00:36:43
to early twenties approximately six feet
00:36:45
in height with dirty blonde
00:36:47
shoulder-length hair
00:36:49
the man had a slender build and a
00:36:51
pockmarked complexion
00:36:56
the car he was driving was a large
00:36:58
american model a few years old in poor
00:37:00
condition
00:37:01
it appeared to be brown or tan in color
00:37:05
right now what we need to know if if
00:37:08
anybody was to call is we need a name
00:37:12
a place where we could find
00:37:14
michaela or the kidnapper
00:37:18
nobody has to leave a name
00:37:20
all they have to do is just give us that
00:37:22
tip that we need to act
00:37:27
life just is not the same and it won't
00:37:30
be the same
00:37:31
again until michaela comes home
00:37:34
[Music]
00:37:57
our next story we will meet a retired
00:37:59
couple jim and kay tatum who are sober
00:38:02
reliable people jim was a career army
00:38:05
officer k an accountant
00:38:07
but in their new home they've
00:38:08
experienced unexplained sounds and
00:38:10
objects that move for no apparent reason
00:38:13
experts call this poltergeist activity
00:38:16
some believe that such activity is not
00:38:18
caused by ghosts but rather by
00:38:20
psychokinesis a hidden psychic power in
00:38:23
the mind of an individual which
00:38:25
unconsciously moves objects through
00:38:27
space
00:38:29
could it be that jim and k tatum caused
00:38:32
their own hauntings
00:38:36
this is a quiet suburb near atlanta
00:38:38
georgia where jim and kate tatum build a
00:38:40
new home
00:38:42
there they plan to retire
00:38:44
but five months after they moved in the
00:38:46
tatums began to experience unusual
00:38:48
events that forced them to put their
00:38:49
house up for sale
00:38:51
for this reason they requested we not
00:38:53
show it but they did allow us to film
00:38:55
inside
00:39:01
one night in january of 1986
00:39:04
kate tatum woke from a restless sleep
00:39:06
not wanting to disturb her husband she
00:39:08
left their bedroom
00:39:10
[Music]
00:39:14
she sensed a strange presence
00:39:21
jim i'm in here
00:39:26
jim i'm in here kay had seen a glimpse
00:39:28
of a man walking past the open doorway
00:39:33
jim
00:39:34
at first i thought it was my husband
00:39:37
and i went into the bedroom and there
00:39:39
and my husband was in the bed so i
00:39:41
thought we had a burglar no
00:39:44
jim searched the house
00:39:46
it was definitely a man and he was
00:39:48
swinging his arm slightly and his head
00:39:51
was slightly bent and he walked briskly
00:39:54
past me there was nothing that you could
00:39:56
see through
00:39:58
there's no evidence of any entry there's
00:40:00
no evidence of anyone having been in the
00:40:02
house
00:40:03
and i thought perhaps kay had been using
00:40:06
an overactive imagination
00:40:08
[Music]
00:40:10
as the night passed into dawn k tatum
00:40:13
lay awake
00:40:14
and wondered
00:40:16
i had fear and i was perplexed about
00:40:18
what happened
00:40:19
while i was tossing and turning i
00:40:21
suddenly remembered that i didn't hear
00:40:23
any sound as he passed me
00:40:26
and i still am unable to
00:40:28
figure out why it happened
00:40:34
after kay's first experience two months
00:40:36
pass by without incident
00:40:38
then one night jim was repairing a
00:40:40
ladder that led up to their attic his
00:40:43
work was interrupted when kate called
00:40:44
him for dinner
00:40:46
i specifically unplugged the drill
00:40:48
because it's a very old drill i thought
00:40:50
it might be dangerous to leave it
00:40:52
plugged
00:40:53
as the evening wore on
00:40:55
he wanted to watch a movie and i decided
00:40:57
to go upstairs and read
00:41:00
one hour later kay heard the sound of
00:41:02
the drill outside her room
00:41:06
she thought the gym was teasing her
00:41:07
about having seen a ghost and she tried
00:41:09
to ignore the noise
00:41:11
eventually she went into the hallway
00:41:14
it was empty
00:41:16
and the drill was unplugged
00:41:20
i was really frightened
00:41:22
and i reached out and felt out and it
00:41:24
was ice cold
00:41:26
it had not been turned on
00:41:28
i was very confused
00:41:30
i knew
00:41:32
very well that something was happening
00:41:33
because
00:41:34
kay is very level-headed
00:41:36
and
00:41:38
she was truly frightened
00:41:40
these incidents continued
00:41:42
one night kay heard the sound of coins
00:41:44
falling in a bowl
00:41:46
but she was alone in the room
00:41:50
another time while cooking
00:41:52
kay felt two sharp tugs on her blouse
00:41:55
after that incident i decided we have a
00:41:57
problem in this house
00:41:59
there's something going on
00:42:01
it's it's not something that we can
00:42:03
understand or explain but there's
00:42:05
something definitely going on
00:42:07
this is where most of
00:42:09
the things have been happening
00:42:11
these occurrences seem to center around
00:42:13
k
00:42:15
parapsychologist william roll visited
00:42:17
the house to try to interpret these
00:42:19
events you know the question comes up
00:42:20
why is this family having these
00:42:22
experiences
00:42:23
is there a sort of ghost that has come
00:42:25
back to haunt them for some
00:42:28
unknown reason or what's taking place
00:42:30
a lot of people have these experiences
00:42:32
it's part of who we are as humans to
00:42:35
have uh so-called psychic experiences
00:42:38
but the pot was up here on the wall i
00:42:40
see okay rohl believes that memories can
00:42:43
actually be transferred to physical
00:42:45
objects
00:42:46
and these residual memories may be
00:42:49
triggered by ordinary people
00:42:52
the nature of his presence seems to be
00:42:55
a teasing type of thing
00:42:59
as though it's teasing us
00:43:01
in february jim finally had his first
00:43:04
experience
00:43:05
it started with this small bell located
00:43:08
in the guest room
00:43:09
jim had a habit of waking hours before
00:43:11
his wife
00:43:13
when k woke she would ring the bell if
00:43:15
she needed him upstairs
00:43:18
i'd grown used to climbing the stairs
00:43:21
after hearing the bell and so i did so
00:43:23
and
00:43:24
it wasn't kay she was asleep
00:43:28
so i went in and looked at the bell and
00:43:30
it was there
00:43:32
and i thought obviously i heard
00:43:34
something else
00:43:35
other than the bell
00:43:36
after the third time this happened the
00:43:38
couple decided to make up a code
00:43:41
in order to outwit the entity if it
00:43:43
ranks three times
00:43:45
i'll come on up the stairs
00:43:48
all right we'll do that
00:43:52
so the next time it rang three times i
00:43:55
knew this was k because this was our
00:43:57
signal
00:43:58
but k was sound asleep
00:44:00
and the bell was in the other bedroom
00:44:03
where it stays
00:44:05
i went in and looked at it
00:44:07
i turned around and walked out the door
00:44:08
and the thing rang again
00:44:15
then i began to
00:44:16
see how kate felt i mean i was
00:44:18
frightened the hair stood up on my neck
00:44:24
i told kay then i says no more bail i'm
00:44:27
not going to answer that bill anymore
00:44:30
and that bell has not rung since
00:44:35
i've never seen him like that before
00:44:39
the number of uh horny cases that are
00:44:42
not very striking not very strong
00:44:44
but where the phenomena nevertheless are
00:44:46
disturbing to the family it might be a
00:44:48
bell ringing a fleeting glimpse of an
00:44:51
aberration the events are trivial but
00:44:54
they're deeply upsetting to the family
00:44:56
because they don't fit into the picture
00:44:59
that most of us have
00:45:01
of the world
00:45:02
and that image of
00:45:04
the physical world particularly our of
00:45:06
our home
00:45:08
is intricately related to who we picture
00:45:10
ourselves as being
00:45:12
the story about the bell gets me
00:45:15
emotional
00:45:16
because uh this was a real turning point
00:45:19
in my life
00:45:21
i
00:45:22
i knew then that there are things that
00:45:23
are unexplained
00:45:26
the tatums feel that their home is no
00:45:28
longer their own
00:45:30
they have decided to move leaving the
00:45:32
entity if that indeed is what it is
00:45:35
to live in the house alone
00:45:40
[Music]
00:45:46

00:45:48
