Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 1, Episode 13 - Full Episode

May 16, 2019 / 49:15

This episode covers the unsolved murder of Los Angeles disc jockey Lee Seunghwan, the disappearance of Michael Rosenbloom, and the con artist Arthur Frankfort.

Lee Seunghwan, a 46-year-old motorcycle enthusiast, was killed in a high-speed chase with a driver who intentionally targeted him. Friends and family recall his peaceful nature and the tragic circumstances surrounding his death on October 8, 1988. Witnesses describe the driver as a Caucasian male, aged 28 to 32, who fled the scene.

Michael Rosenbloom vanished on February 14, 1980, after being banished from his home due to drug issues. His father, Maurice Rosenbloom, has spent years searching for him, uncovering police mishandling of the investigation and a potential cover-up regarding the discovery of Michael's car.

The episode also features Arthur Frankfort, a conman who preyed on elderly women in Florida, stealing their money and valuables. After a brief romance, he vanished, leaving behind a note and stolen property. His arrest followed tips from viewers after the broadcast.

Additionally, the episode updates on Raja Skåne, a man suffering from amnesia who disappeared in 1986. A lead from Topeka, Kansas, suggested he might be alive, but police were unable to locate him.

TL;DR

This episode covers Lee Seunghwan's murder, Michael Rosenbloom's disappearance, and con artist Arthur Frankfort's crimes.

encounter the crazed killer on the
00:03:03
streets of Los Angeles
00:03:06
it was a fight for survival that Lee
00:03:08
would not win lee seunghwan was a man
00:03:14
who loved the nightlife of Los Angeles
00:03:15
was an important part of it but simply
00:03:19
because he looked different Lee and his
00:03:20
friends were arbitrarily targeted for
00:03:22
murder the sad irony of his death is
00:03:25
that he was only an innocent bystander
00:03:26
the search for his killer has been taken
00:03:29
to the streets of Los Angeles by his
00:03:31
family and the rockers and bikers who
00:03:33
loved him when he first got his
00:03:38
motorcycle I guess I was probably a
00:03:40
little bit nervous about it but I knew
00:03:42
that he was careful and I knew that he
00:03:45
wouldn't take chances unnecessary
00:03:46
chances
00:03:47
wouldn't ride on the freeways he he
00:03:50
wasn't a crazy kind of person and so I
00:03:53
really didn't worry about him a 2ao
00:03:59
October the enemy MC friend left a
00:04:02
Hollywood nightclub unaware of the
00:04:04
danger that awaited in the street
00:04:07
they wrote to buy to Lee and a friend
00:04:10
Maine beachy trading Mike Auerbach and
00:04:12
Rob Caliphate wrote in front drive along
00:04:17
and all of a sudden out of nowhere this
00:04:20
truck comes flying by me as he comes by
00:04:22
he dives in on the rap
00:04:24
you screaming haha you screaming
00:04:26
something I don't gonna hear just
00:04:27
laughing dives it on me
00:04:29
I look over mic and in LA this happens
00:04:33
every day every day but not so clean
00:04:45
infuriated because he's trying to kill
00:04:47
me and I'm really close to the guy yo
00:04:50
and I what the hell you trying to do
00:04:51
trying to kill me
00:04:52
and he starts screaming at me and looked
00:04:54
like like the net I'm drugged spear
00:04:57
would ever cycle then he rolls his
00:04:58
window down and spits in my face right
00:05:02
in my face and just anybody get
00:05:04
significant in their face cuz irate so I
00:05:08
punched out his mirror and he's still
00:05:09
alone his window down up and down
00:05:11
spitting at me ground screaming and then
00:05:14
he starts reaching down like he's bad
00:05:15
again I put my fist through his driver's
00:05:18
window as soon as I broke his window he
00:05:23
triggered shot out of the intersection
00:05:25
and he's doing a Brody u-turn and Mike
00:05:28
and I love each other's got some killers
00:05:30
it's coming after us Nimoy's down
00:05:35
does you turn comes after us we're
00:05:38
flying down the street and I'm just
00:05:40
going and I see his headlights bearing
00:05:42
down on us I'm just gonna sit back
00:05:44
together so we we choose to go right and
00:05:47
as I look back T's comes flying through
00:05:49
the intersection screeching bouncing and
00:05:51
comes to a sly stop when we got to the
00:05:55
intersection he turned left the man in
00:05:57
the truck followed me
00:06:00
he's like create a for what I've seen
00:06:03
he's a crazed maniac cuz he he just
00:06:06
wanted to kill me he wanted to kill me
00:06:11
instead of Rob calafate lease owned
00:06:13
became the target of the drivers rage
00:06:18
according to the witnesses they were
00:06:20
both going anywhere from 60 to 90 miles
00:06:22
an hour and here you have a young man
00:06:24
who is known by his friends known by his
00:06:27
family as a very peaceable man who
00:06:31
purposely avoids fights even when
00:06:33
confronted even though if he is
00:06:35
physically harmed by somebody he'll turn
00:06:37
a walk away you have a man like that
00:06:39
who's out riding his motorcycle having
00:06:40
fun and also he's in a situation where
00:06:43
he's terrorized by someone in a car
00:06:46
she had to be in complete terror and
00:06:48
this terror lasted approximately about a
00:06:49
five mile chase with this man right on
00:06:52
his rear end according to the witnesses
00:06:54
he was right on and he chased him until
00:06:56
the time they actually hit him and drove
00:06:58
him into a telephone pole Lee when he
00:07:05
flew through the air
00:07:06
he flew close to 180 feet before I came
00:07:10
to arrest this is a murder
00:07:15
that's a homicide someone intentionally
00:07:17
took the life of another person it's a
00:07:19
homicide
00:07:21
the massive skull fracture Lee received
00:07:23
in the collision was a cause of his
00:07:25
death
00:07:25
I received a call from Cedars they said
00:07:30
that he was in the intensive care and I
00:07:34
knew I just knew but I don't believe
00:07:42
it's real but it isn't real he was such
00:07:47
a big part of my life he was my buddy
00:07:49
it wasn't just my son he was my buddy
00:07:53
[Music]
00:08:01
at least funeral hundreds of his friends
00:08:04
paid tribute to this music video with
00:08:07
footage shot at the funeral was set to
00:08:09
an original song dedicated to Lee's
00:08:11
memory by the rock group Little Caesar
00:08:22
it was amazing to see all these people
00:08:24
who really cared there's no way that
00:08:27
that that can be consolation enough
00:08:29
there's a real tribute to whom Lee was
00:08:32
by how many people were there and how
00:08:35
many people really have shown how much
00:08:38
they cared
00:08:42
[Music]
00:08:59
these friends organized a rock concert
00:09:02
in his honor the special guest
00:09:04
performances by Billy Idol Julian
00:09:06
Leonard among others proceeds from the
00:09:11
concert went to a fund offering a reward
00:09:14
to anyone who could bring Lee's murder
00:09:15
to justice
00:09:17
a lot of people take the opinion that
00:09:21
these guys are motorcycle gang members
00:09:24
when in fact there was four guys out
00:09:26
having a good time they happen to like
00:09:28
to ride harley-davidson motorcycles what
00:09:31
really counts is who they are and what
00:09:33
they're doing these people weren't doing
00:09:34
anything wrong that night and they had a
00:09:36
right to be out there riding their
00:09:37
motorcycles and dressed the way they
00:09:39
were at least someone wasn't even the
00:09:41
man who gave him the problem it was
00:09:43
another one of the motorcyclists but
00:09:45
this man was so bent on catching the bad
00:09:47
person it didn't matter to him who was
00:09:49
on the motorcycle he had to catch that
00:09:51
motorcycle and he had to run him over
00:09:57
it's incomprehensible to me to think
00:10:01
that we could never find this man it's I
00:10:04
can't even imagine that I could live the
00:10:06
rest of my life not knowing who did this
00:10:12
these killer drove a late-model two-tone
00:10:15
vehicle with a chrome luggage rack and
00:10:17
tinted windows most eyewitnesses agree
00:10:20
that it was a Bronco - or a Chevy Blazer
00:10:22
and that his colors were red on white
00:10:26
damage to the vehicle included a smashed
00:10:28
outside rear view mirror a broken window
00:10:31
and a dented door all in the driver's
00:10:33
side the vehicle would probably have
00:10:36
come into an auto body shop for repair
00:10:38
sometime after October 8th the driver of
00:10:42
the vehicle is described as Caucasian
00:10:44
aged 28 to 32 with green eyes and
00:10:47
reddish brown hair and beard incredibly
00:10:51
four years went by before police finally
00:10:53
got the tip they'd been waiting for
00:10:55
after a recent rebroadcast of the story
00:10:58
a viewer called our phone center and
00:11:00
told one of the operators that there was
00:11:02
a man in prison in Georgia would often
00:11:04
bragged about running down a biker in
00:11:06
Los Angeles the Los Angeles police
00:11:09
obtained a mug shot of the suspect Lee's
00:11:12
friends picked the man out of a photo
00:11:14
lineup his name is Franklin Legrand
00:11:17
Perkins on July 30th 1993 just five days
00:11:24
before Perkins was scheduled for parole
00:11:26
he was arrested one week later he was
00:11:29
brought back to Los Angeles by Detective
00:11:31
Dan Andrews most murder victims know
00:11:36
their attackers know their killers but
00:11:38
this is a case that that just wasn't
00:11:39
that way this was a random event a
00:11:42
person was basically minding his own
00:11:45
business and and unfortunate was in the
00:11:47
wrong place at the wrong time and I
00:11:50
think it's very unusual to identify
00:11:51
somebody and be able to solve a case
00:11:53
after five years it's a very good
00:11:55
feeling except for the most important
00:12:00
fact which is nothing can ever bring Lee
00:12:03
back I hope this will bring some closure
00:12:07
to this five years of uncertainty and
00:12:11
the pain that goes along with it
00:12:13
[Music]
00:12:17
finally justice can be served and and
00:12:21
also I'm grateful that this man is not
00:12:24
out there committing other crimes and
00:12:28
hurting other people who killing other
00:12:30
people's loved ones one portion of the
00:12:37
grief will be closed we're dealt with
00:12:40
and I know that when I'm driving on the
00:12:43
streets I won't be looking in other cars
00:12:52
wondering if that might be the guy in an
00:13:11
earlier broadcast we presented the story
00:13:13
of Stephen Cox accused of defrauding his
00:13:15
friends and neighbors in Medford Oregon
00:13:16
and three and a half million dollars
00:13:18
thanks to our viewers the four year
00:13:21
search for Cox has ended in 1982 Stephen
00:13:26
Cox formed an investment company
00:13:28
offering his clients at 25 percent
00:13:30
return on their money
00:13:31
Cox was able to convince many people in
00:13:34
Medford to invest their life savings
00:13:35
totaling three and a half million
00:13:37
dollars at first his business prospered
00:13:40
then in 1984 it began to sour on
00:13:43
September 22nd 1984 Stephen Cox vanished
00:13:47
allegedly took with him over $200,000 in
00:13:50
gold silver jewelry and cash within
00:13:55
minutes of our broadcast in November six
00:13:58
viewers called our 800 number to report
00:14:00
that Cox was living in Boise Idaho under
00:14:02
the assumed name Robert Bradley Davis
00:14:05
however just hours before the broadcast
00:14:07
Cox disappeared again telling his wife
00:14:10
he was going to Hawaii
00:14:14
update Stephen Cox has been arrested in
00:14:17
Lake Mead Nevada's 25 miles southeast of
00:14:20
Las Vegas five days after he fled from
00:14:23
Boise Cox checked into the Lake Mead
00:14:25
Lodge Motel he registered under the name
00:14:28
John strums listed Mara zona address he
00:14:33
was not the normal guest he stayed in
00:14:35
his room
00:14:35
all day long he would only leave at
00:14:38
night very seldom did he leave in the
00:14:40
daytime and we noticed that the license
00:14:44
plates were not the same as he had put
00:14:46
down on his registration card and that
00:14:49
made us a little suspicious but yet
00:14:51
nothing we could put a finger on two
00:14:55
weeks later
00:14:55
Edna Reed made a startling discovery
00:14:58
one day and when I was out on the ground
00:15:00
I saw the guest come out of his room
00:15:03
instead of putting his trash and Ben in
00:15:05
front of his room he took it up to
00:15:07
number 35 which was several doors away
00:15:09
and when I went to empty the trash out
00:15:12
of that bin I found the crumpled up
00:15:14
letter and like any curious female I
00:15:17
read the letter when I read the letter I
00:15:20
saw the part that said something about
00:15:22
the unsolved mystery show being a
00:15:24
bombshell I showed the letter to my
00:15:27
husband Harold and between the two of us
00:15:29
we decided it was time definitely to
00:15:31
call the Rangers and tell them about the
00:15:33
guest lake me Park Rangers immediately
00:15:36
ran a computer check and discovered that
00:15:38
the car belong to someone other than
00:15:40
John Strauss on the morning of the 14th
00:15:44
we began to look for the person by going
00:15:46
to the Lake Mead Lodge to see if we
00:15:48
could identify in fact who he really was
00:15:49
when we got there the vehicle was gone
00:15:51
and the person was gone and had been
00:15:53
gone for 15 or 20 minutes the next
00:15:57
morning Park Rangers spotted Cox's car
00:15:59
pulled him over in the parking lot of
00:16:01
the Gold Strike casino after we made the
00:16:04
traffic stop he produced identification
00:16:06
the driver's license issued to a Robert
00:16:08
Davis and we checked that name and date
00:16:12
of birth through the NCIC computer he
00:16:14
found that it was an alias used by one
00:16:16
Stephen Cox and that there was a warrant
00:16:18
for mr. Cox at that point we placed him
00:16:21
under arrest during a search of Cox's
00:16:25
cars Park Rangers uncovered a small
00:16:27
fortune
00:16:29
when we looked in the passenger
00:16:31
compartment of the vehicle and in the
00:16:32
trunk we found suitcases and other
00:16:35
luggage tech bags filled with jewelry
00:16:40
rings necklaces collectors type baseball
00:16:43
cards some gold coins silver coins and I
00:16:47
was really very curious to know why he
00:16:51
had it in the vehicle and if in fact
00:16:53
this was the stuff that he was wanted
00:16:54
for taking in the first place

April 2nd 1988 Baldwin borough
00:17:16
Pennsylvania a suburb of Greater
00:17:18
Pittsburgh 30 volunteer firemen gather
00:17:21
on a steep bluff overlooking the
00:17:23
Monongahela River at the suggestion of a
00:17:33
psyche they are here to search for the
00:17:35
remains of Michael rosenbloom a young
00:17:38
Pittsburgh man who has been missing for
00:17:40
over eight years or Maurice Rosenbloom
00:17:44
this search is his latest desperate
00:17:45
attempt to determine the fate of his son
00:17:47
Michael who disappeared on Valentine's
00:17:50
Day in 1980 from a road that runs along
00:17:52
the foot of the cliff there is not the
00:17:57
slightest possibility in my mind that he
00:18:01
could be out there alive I pray that
00:18:05
that one in ten million chance what
00:18:09
happened but I just can't believe it I
00:18:12
just can't believe it I guess you always
00:18:16
have some hope as long as I don't have a
00:18:18
body there's always hope over the last
00:18:22
eight years Maurice Rosenberg has spent
00:18:24
almost a quarter of a million dollars
00:18:26
doggedly pursuing every lead to find his
00:18:28
missing son
00:18:29
strangely many of those leads suggested
00:18:32
that the authorities interfered in the
00:18:33
investigation maurices loan request has
00:18:36
uncovered disturbing indications an
00:18:38
important document may have been forged
00:18:40
a questionable arrest warrant for his
00:18:42
son was issued and crucial evidence was
00:18:44
ignored the search for Michael has led
00:18:46
to a scandal in which a police chief was
00:18:48
fired and then reinstated after a
00:18:51
hearing maurice rosenbloom is not
00:18:53
satisfied the investigation into his
00:18:55
son's disappearance
00:18:59
Michael Rosenbloom began experimenting
00:19:01
with drugs during high school and soon
00:19:03
became a heavy user of a prescription
00:19:05
painkiller that altered his moods and
00:19:07
made him erratic and irritable Michael's
00:19:11
life spun wildly out of control but
00:19:14
throughout he retained the strong
00:19:15
support and love of his family he was
00:19:20
into drugs at the time that was a bad
00:19:22
time for all the kids that were ever
00:19:25
into drugs there was a thing that just
00:19:28
came out now called tough love and it
00:19:31
was supposed to be the thing to do was
00:19:35
tell him you're through here you can't
00:19:37
live here you're out if you won't live
00:19:40
according to my rules you're out I had
00:19:42
never done that and the one time that I
00:19:45
listened that I did that I never saw him
00:19:48
again the night of February 13th 1980 a
00:19:55
month after he was released from a drug
00:19:57
rehab program Michael began acting
00:20:00
abnormally Barbara Rosenbloom found a
00:20:03
bottle of painkillers in his bedroom she
00:20:06
banished Michael and his girlfriend Lisa
00:20:07
from their home they left and Lisa's car
00:20:10
I said to Michael don't come back until
00:20:15
you're completely off drugs until you
00:20:18
want to live your life the way should
00:20:20
and that's that's the way it is I've
00:20:26
always folded myself for that and I
00:20:28
probably will till I die that I didn't
00:20:31
say okay well we'll try again maybe
00:20:38
tomorrow will be different Michael
00:20:48
the next morning Michael awoke with a
00:20:50
severe drug hangover Lisa drove him to a
00:20:54
local hospital but he refused to be
00:20:56
treated according to Lisa Michael became
00:21:11
increasingly agitated 15 minutes later
00:21:14
he left her stranded at a local gas
00:21:16
station and drove off erratically
00:21:19
Michael Rosen blooms last words were go
00:21:22
to my parents house I'll see you there
00:21:24
in two hours
00:21:26
he has not been seen since
00:21:29
I figure well he took her car and he
00:21:35
took off for a day or two he'll be back
00:21:37
or he'll call we waited that night there
00:21:41
were no calls I became seriously worried
00:21:46
my wife felt immediately that it was a
00:21:51
terminal situation that he was dead I
00:21:53
didn't he would never have just left
00:21:57
when he left there was money in his bank
00:21:59
account it was closed when his closet
00:22:02
and if he were going to have gone
00:22:06
anywhere he would have said to us I plan
00:22:09
to do such-and-such and I'm going to
00:22:11
take my money and go but all of that his
00:22:13
money is still in this bank account his
00:22:16
clothes were in his closet where since
00:22:18
cotton they're gone and that wasn't his
00:22:22
style it wasn't his way
00:22:26
the following day rose and blooms filed
00:22:29
a missing-persons report with local
00:22:31
authorities the Pittsburgh Police
00:22:33
Department who began an immediate search
00:22:35
for the car private investigator Steve
00:22:41
intersect was a detective for the
00:22:43
Pittsburgh Police when Michael Rosen
00:22:45
will vanished
00:22:46
you need a starting point any homicide
00:22:49
case your dead bodies you starting with
00:22:51
in this case the car would have been a
00:22:52
started so important we find a car as
00:22:56
quickly as possible and then think the
00:22:58
steps to notify the media for their help
00:23:01
and asking the general public if anybody
00:23:03
saw the boy who was in the car they know
00:23:05
what happened to him after the
00:23:11
Pittsburgh police had searched for two
00:23:13
weeks they found no car and no body so
00:23:17
Michaels father began his own search he
00:23:20
offered a reward for information posted
00:23:22
flyers and traveled as far away as
00:23:24
California visiting with friends Michael
00:23:27
may have contacted I launched the
00:23:32
investigation myself because I was
00:23:34
concerned about finding him and seeing
00:23:39
if I couldn't put him back on the right
00:23:40
track again so I was after him for
00:23:44
myself that kind of suit things over put
00:23:51
it back together again if I could it was
00:23:54
too late it was too late it's just -
00:23:57
right
00:24:00
[Music]
00:24:12
three months later from May 21st 1980
00:24:15
the police department and Baldwin
00:24:18
borough a Pittsburgh suburb notified
00:24:20
Lisa that her car had been found
00:24:23
according to official records the car
00:24:26
had been impounded on the day that
00:24:27
Michael vanished
00:24:29
Maurice rosenbloom wanted to know what
00:24:32
happened during those three months we
00:24:36
couldn't believe that they had that car
00:24:38
for 91 days absolutely couldn't believe
00:24:41
it
00:24:41
the Pittsburgh police had contacted
00:24:44
every Police Department in this area
00:24:47
looking for that specific car and here
00:24:51
that car was discovered in the police
00:24:52
bonded tow yard less than three miles
00:24:55
from where we're sitting right now I
00:24:58
think everybody was quite upset to say
00:25:01
the least
00:25:02
and there was a lot of discussion about
00:25:04
and the old terms of policemen can you
00:25:06
believe this can you believe what
00:25:08
Baldwin done River Road where Lisa's car
00:25:13
was found connects Baldwin borough with
00:25:15
Pittsburgh's Southside a Baldwin police
00:25:18
dispatcher was definitely contacted by
00:25:21
the Pittsburgh Police when they searched
00:25:23
for the car but no one can say whether
00:25:25
the information was ever officially
00:25:27
circulated
00:25:32
[Music]
00:25:43
just two hours after Michael left Lisa a
00:25:46
Bolden police unit found her car on
00:25:48
River Road two of the tires were flat
00:25:51
the keys were gone and the engine was
00:25:54
cool
00:25:55
Michael had vanished into thin air
00:26:04
fifteen minutes later the car was towed
00:26:06
to the Baldwin borough car pound or it
00:26:09
would remain resting on a spent tire
00:26:11
rims in the next three months well no
00:26:16
question throws your whole investigation
00:26:17
off if we start in the beginning that we
00:26:20
knew that car was on River Road the
00:26:22
whole picture would have changed
00:26:23
drastically my personal feeling is on
00:26:27
being a police officer 28 years if we
00:26:29
had known if that car was found in
00:26:31
Baldwin that morning within hours I
00:26:33
strongly believe we would have known by
00:26:35
now what had happened to Michael when
00:26:37
they found the car after 91 days my
00:26:43
immediate reaction was that he was gone
00:26:46
dead Maurice Rosenblum wanted an
00:26:56
explanation and the Pittsburgh Police
00:26:58
Department went to Baldwin Borough to
00:26:59
investigate the delay the Baldwin police
00:27:03
claimed that they had mail Lisa a letter
00:27:05
the day after the car was found saying
00:27:08
they had impounded it lisa says she
00:27:11
never got the letter
00:27:12
the police eventually produced a copy of
00:27:15
the letter but Lisa still insisted she
00:27:18
never received it in my opinion they
00:27:21
deliberately misled the Pittsburgh
00:27:22
police in the search assuming that my
00:27:26
son was never even involved why didn't
00:27:29
they search for the young lady that
00:27:30
owned the car because all this was done
00:27:34
to cover a more sinister fact that's why
00:27:40
around the same time horace claims he
00:27:43
received two anonymous phone calls their
00:27:49
first one came in during the time that
00:27:51
the car was gone they said that he was
00:27:57
arrested and i wrote it off as a
00:27:59
crackpot Oh after the car was found
00:28:05
I received a second telephone call just
00:28:08
simply said but your son was arrested by
00:28:12
the Baldwin Police click they were gone
00:28:18
for six months Maurice Rosenblum
00:28:21
searched for his missing son Michael his
00:28:24
offer of a big reward had borne no fruit
00:28:26
the only concrete clues with the
00:28:29
discovery of the car that Michael had
00:28:30
been driving and the two mysterious
00:28:33
phone calls alleging that Michael had
00:28:35
been arrested then on July 15th 1980 the
00:28:40
Bolden police issued a warrant for
00:28:41
Michael Rosen Bloom's arrest he was
00:28:44
wanted in connection with a robbery that
00:28:46
had taken place in April two and a half
00:28:49
months after he had vanished now the big
00:28:52
twist in this whole thing was that
00:28:54
everybody's talked to the people who
00:28:55
were the victims of the robbery they
00:28:57
both told everybody from day one that
00:28:59
the person who come in or was a white
00:29:01
man and he had a viateur
00:29:02
mirrored sunglasses on that covered eye
00:29:04
above his eyebrows and Donn almost at a
00:29:08
bridge of his nose so the only part they
00:29:10
actually could see would be the forehead
00:29:12
and the chin line but yet the composite
00:29:15
was made without sunglasses and I have
00:29:18
been at police work for thirty years
00:29:19
when I looked at the composite there's
00:29:22
no doubt in my mind that this composite
00:29:23
was made from that first flyer put out
00:29:26
on Michael rosenbloom back in February
00:29:28
it's just too perfect a week later the
00:29:34
warrant was dismissed maurice rosenbloom
00:29:37
was left with three disturbing questions
00:29:41
why are the Baldwin Police Department
00:29:43
failed to respond to the Pittsburgh
00:29:45
Police Department's request for
00:29:46
information when they had Lisa's car in
00:29:48
their possession for three month
00:29:50
why are they issued award for Michael
00:29:52
Rosen blooms arrest and the mysterious
00:29:55
phone calls was there any truth to the
00:29:57
accusation of the Baldwin Police
00:29:59
Department arrested Michael the day he
00:30:01
disappeared
00:30:02
Maurice took his suspicions to the
00:30:04
office of the Pennsylvania Attorney
00:30:05
General the Baldwin Police Department
00:30:08
was investigated and cleared of any
00:30:10
wrongdoing but the case would not die
00:30:17
six and a half years after his son
00:30:20
disappeared
00:30:21
Maurice received an anonymous letter
00:30:23
urging him to talk to a woman named Jean
00:30:25
Haslett who had worked as a dispatcher
00:30:27
with the baldwin Police the letter led
00:30:31
to accusations of the department headed
00:30:34
by police chief a Yoga body had
00:30:36
mishandle Michael's case mr. Rosenblum
00:30:39
showed me an anonymous letter that he
00:30:41
had received indicating that if he
00:30:43
contacted me I had information regarding
00:30:45
the vehicle that the Baldwin police
00:30:48
towed I then told him that approximately
00:30:54
two or three months after the vehicle
00:30:55
had been towed
00:30:57
the Chief of Police ordered his clerk
00:30:59
Fred Capelli
00:31:00
to type a letter notifying the owner of
00:31:03
the vehicle that it had been towed and
00:31:07
the letter was back dated to February
00:31:09
15th the day after the vehicle was towed
00:31:11
I didn't take this upon myself I was
00:31:18
instructed to do all this
00:31:21
Fred Capelli was chief galleries clerk
00:31:24
he corroborated hazlit's story
00:31:28
approximately May 20th the chief told me
00:31:32
to type a letter in reference to the car
00:31:35
that was towed from River Road I never
00:31:39
thought anything about I did what I was
00:31:41
told to do you know he's my boss
00:31:45
so I did what he told me to do and I
00:31:47
didn't question it Fred Capelli claims
00:31:52
that after he typed the letter the chief
00:31:54
ordered him to sign the name of Chester
00:31:57
Lombardi the senior officer at the River
00:31:59
Road scene that
00:32:01
Lombardi has since died he had asked
00:32:06
Chester Lombardi and sign letter and
00:32:08
Chester refused to sign it because it
00:32:11
was back then so the chief told me to go
00:32:15
ahead and sign Chester Limbaugh his name
00:32:17
to it the go mail it should put in a
00:32:23
file and that's what I did to back Tate
00:32:30
letter and place it into the police
00:32:33
files as is an unusual thing and in the
00:32:38
nine years that I was involved in in
00:32:39
police departments it was not something
00:32:41
that I had ever witnessed before based
00:32:50
on these new revelations horace wrote an
00:32:53
angry letter to the baldwin borough
00:32:54
council demanding an investigation into
00:32:57
what he thought was a cover-up in
00:33:01
october 1987 the baldon Borough Council
00:33:04
held a hearing on the matter they
00:33:07
dismissed chief de bourree for
00:33:09
interfering with the investigation into
00:33:11
Michael's disappearance when he was
00:33:15
discharged he appealed that to the Civil
00:33:18
Service Commission and their conclusion
00:33:20
was that the chief was not guilty the
00:33:29
Civil Service Commission voted to
00:33:30
reinstate Gabor E as police chief
00:33:33
finding there was no misconduct they
00:33:36
have never published a transcript of
00:33:38
their hearings but clearly they didn't
00:33:40
believe Fred Capelli why they didn't
00:33:43
believe me because the chief had friends
00:33:50
on that Civil Service Commission and he
00:33:55
wouldn't believe me no matter what I
00:33:57
said there's been so many windows made
00:34:00
about the way it was handled and all I
00:34:02
can say is this Commission rendered his
00:34:06
decision strictly on the evidence in a
00:34:09
testimony that was presented at the
00:34:11
hearing this matter has never totally
00:34:15
and resolved to satisfy anybody in law
00:34:18
enforcement who knows what he's doing
00:34:21
the time that I'll let this go is when
00:34:25
it ends and it's not over yet it's not
00:34:29
over we're getting close but it's not
00:34:31
over
00:34:40
Lloris rosenbloom persistence may have
00:34:43
paid off during the search of the steep
00:34:46
hillside last April a six inch fragment
00:34:48
of what appears to be a human bone was
00:34:50
discovered I contended all along that
00:34:56
something had happened to them but the
00:34:58
possibility that I might have proof in
00:35:01
my pocket makes you kind of sick the
00:35:10
search also turned up patches of
00:35:12
corduroy in a piece of shoe sole both
00:35:15
items are consistent with the pants and
00:35:17
boots Michael Rosenblum is wearing when
00:35:19
last seen these objects were discovered
00:35:23
above River Road overlooking the spot
00:35:26
where Lisa's car was abandoned over
00:35:28
eight years ago

00:35:50
last month the examine the strange
00:35:53
disappearance of Raja stain a 62 year
00:35:56
old father of seven from Los Angeles
00:35:58
California on February 19th 1986
00:36:03
Raja's Kane told his sister that he was
00:36:06
going to a local hardware store his
00:36:08
family never saw him again a month after
00:36:12
his disappearance Rocha scar was found
00:36:14
inside were many of his important papers
00:36:17
including the deed to his property as
00:36:19
well as his glasses and false teeth
00:36:22
Rocha skeins family believes he is alive
00:36:24
and may be suffering from some form of
00:36:26
amnesia I don't give up I still pray and
00:36:32
I find him somewhere one day I just feel
00:36:37
it within my heart Topeka Kansas the
00:36:44
night after our broadcast police
00:36:46
received a call from a man who believed
00:36:47
he recognized
00:36:48
Rogers cane local resident named Homer
00:36:51
Jackson the caller said when he'd seen
00:36:54
him on TV that he was and in questioning
00:36:59
that's when he come up with the
00:37:00
mannerisms the fact that he had no
00:37:03
dentures at that time a scar on his body
00:37:08
which I don't think any probably
00:37:10
probably knew except maybe the Los
00:37:12
Angeles Police and the relatives
00:37:14
acting in the collars tip police
00:37:17
attempted to locate only jackson only to
00:37:19
discover he had disappeared within days
00:37:22
roaches game Sunland Rudy Topeka joined
00:37:25
the police search
00:37:27
I'm glad I know he's been an area of
00:37:30
about a year a year and a half and a
00:37:34
truck driver picked him up decided to
00:37:37
contain him Elmer and gave him his last
00:37:40
name which was Jackson's he goes by
00:37:42
Elmer Jackson he's been working several
00:37:45
jobs or side jobs here and there laying
00:37:48
bricks and things like that
00:37:50
Lyn Canaan the Topeka police canvassed
00:37:52
the neighborhood where Jackson his left
00:37:54
seizure they passed on flyers and will
00:37:57
just canes picture but we're unable to
00:37:59
locate it it's finished it's the best
00:38:02
lead so far the only lead for us we're
00:38:07
unsuccessful today

00:38:28
on July the 29th 1988 a brazen daylight
00:38:32
robbery took place in a suburb of Palm
00:38:34
Beach Florida the thief had a key to the
00:38:38
house he was highly selective and seemed
00:38:41
to know just what he wanted not one
00:38:45
fingerprint was left behind it was a
00:38:48
quintessential inside job at the door
00:38:52
the thief paused long enough to leave a
00:38:53
note for his victim he signed it el the
00:39:03
active socialite from the warm healthy
00:39:05
climate of Florida may get a welcome new
00:39:07
home for retiring senior citizens many
00:39:10
of them are widows and divorcees who
00:39:12
often hope to remarry and in fact love
00:39:14
does bloom frequently in the warm
00:39:15
Florida sunshine but sometimes these
00:39:18
widows and divorcees become easy marks
00:39:20
for a particularly sleazy type of conman
00:39:23
a conman who moves in on their emotions
00:39:25
and makes off with our cash we're gonna
00:39:30
speed it up for you with a little
00:39:31

00:39:38
on May the 20th 1988 a widow who has
00:39:43
asked that her identity not be revealed
00:39:44
went to a Friday night singles dance at
00:39:47
st. Mary's Church in West Palm Beach we
00:39:50
will call her mrs. K eligible men were
00:39:53
not plentiful at these dances so when a
00:39:55
good-looking man named Arthur Frankfort
00:39:57
approached mrs. K and asked her to dance
00:40:00
she was flattered my name is IRA
00:40:05
Frankfort Emily
00:40:08
nice to meet you Emily would you like to
00:40:11
have this dance
00:40:11
delighted when I first saw him sitting
00:40:14
up against the wall I thought it was too
00:40:16
old you know it is a single stance and
00:40:18
you do look him over after he'd asked me
00:40:21
to dance I realized he wasn't as old as
00:40:22
I thought he first appeared mrs. K at
00:40:28
Arthur Frankfort danced every dance that
00:40:30
Friday evening is st. Mary's Church it
00:40:33
was the beginning of a two-month
00:40:34
whirlwind romance and the day that I met
00:40:37
him till the time that he left never
00:40:40
once was I suspicious of any move that
00:40:41
he made as far as to question his
00:40:44
character who he was and he was that he
00:40:47
was a liar and a thief
00:40:50
Frankfort told mrs. K he was a geologist
00:40:53
he said he had worked for the government
00:40:55
primarily in Alaska and I just retired
00:40:57
after twenty-one years of service he
00:41:00
told her we owned a house and several
00:41:02
other rental properties in nearby towns
00:41:04
and lived off that income in addition to
00:41:07
his retirement pay so one night he came
00:41:10
home and he said instead of renting
00:41:12
another place for himself he thought it
00:41:14
would be better if he lived here once he
00:41:16
moved in it was great I would come home
00:41:18
from work he'd have my dinner ready he
00:41:20
would do the grocery shopping he would
00:41:21
make dinner he would clean the house
00:41:23
vacuum the house there was no reason to
00:41:27
have anticipated what he did
00:41:29
[Music]
00:41:36
he came to the house one day with money
00:41:39
it was wrapped in a plastic grocery bag
00:41:43
and he said that he'd sold the house
00:41:44
that he had rented it out with the
00:41:46
option to buy he asked me if I would put
00:41:48
it away for safekeeping I'd like to ask
00:41:51
you to put it in the safe money but I'd
00:41:54
like to give you the combination so you
00:41:57
don't worry about the combination please
00:41:59
I offered him the safe combination
00:42:01
because it was his money and he refused
00:42:04
the combination he said he didn't really
00:42:06
want it all right eventually arthur
00:42:13
frankfurt did allow mrs. k to give him
00:42:15
the combination to her safe by the end
00:42:20
of july mrs. K in Frankfurt had lived
00:42:22
together for one month and had settled
00:42:24
into a comfortable domestic routine when
00:42:27
I came home from work that night we
00:42:29
started play gin and during the course
00:42:31
of the gin game he stopped what he was
00:42:34
doing and he says to me Emily
00:42:37
yes you really love me yes I do very
00:42:43
much I guess that means I can get away
00:42:49
with anything at that time I thought he
00:42:52
meant to gin game because he would like
00:42:54
to try to cheat he head the win
00:43:02
the day after their card game mrs. K
00:43:05
arrived home to find the bed she shared
00:43:07
with Arthur unmade my beds always made
00:43:12
either art made it or I made whoever was
00:43:14
last up even then it did not appear out
00:43:18
of the ordinary to me until the time and
00:43:20
I walked into my closet to change my
00:43:22
clothes and discovered all the clothes
00:43:23
from the closet missing
00:43:28
and then I realized that he had left
00:43:34
mrs. K was heartbroken
00:43:36
[Music]
00:43:40
on the whole table she found a note
00:43:50
the note Arthur Frankford left said
00:43:52
sorry
00:43:53
things too possessive l which was their
00:43:57
code for love then mrs. K remembered
00:44:01
giving him the combination to her safety
00:44:03
[Music]
00:44:07
they didn't realize until the time that
00:44:09
I read the note and went back and opened
00:44:11
the safe and then I discovered that I
00:44:14
was wrong her most expensive jewelry
00:44:17
valued at $4,500 was gone also missing
00:44:21
were several items that had belonged to
00:44:23
her late husband his wedding ring
00:44:25
handgun work ID card and driver's
00:44:28
license renewal for mrs. K notified the
00:44:32
authorities took a lot of courage to
00:44:35
call the police I wasn't in a hurry I
00:44:37
didn't want to say it out loud to myself
00:44:39
that art was who he was detective David
00:44:44
Hoyt came up with sordid background
00:44:45
information on this senior citizen Don
00:44:48
Juan Arthur Frankfort was wanted for
00:44:52
check forgery also burglary to a
00:44:56
condominium
00:44:57
he's using a aka are also known as James
00:45:02
Ferguson
00:45:06
police also learned that mrs. K was not
00:45:08
Arthur Frankfurt's only victim the
00:45:11
president of a senior Olympic center
00:45:13
were Frankford worked for a short time
00:45:15
remembers receiving telephone calls from
00:45:17
three women who had been conned
00:45:19
by Arthur Frankfort and they took me
00:45:22
into their confidence admitting that
00:45:25
they had invited him to live with them
00:45:27
they were sexually involved with him and
00:45:30
it made them very very vulnerable of
00:45:32
course this is and of course he stole
00:45:35
everything he could lay his hands on
00:45:36
when he was in their home Arthur feeling
00:45:42
Frankfort preys on the emotions of women
00:45:45
in their late 50s early 60s often passes
00:45:49
himself off as 65 years of age in
00:45:51
reality he is 77 this is the sort of a
00:45:56
game to it and I know he's probably
00:45:58
somewhere else in the United States
00:46:00
preying on other women the same way
00:46:05
Arthur Frankfort is six feet tall weighs
00:46:08
about a hundred and sixty-five pounds
00:46:09
and has gray hair blue eyes he has been
00:46:13
known to use the alias James Ferguson
00:46:14
who may now be using the alias of Andrew
00:46:17
Kern's
00:46:18
posing as a widower from West Palm Beach
00:46:21
he would have the identification papers
00:46:24
and wedding rings to substantiate this
00:46:26
false identity update within minutes of
00:46:30
our broadcast two viewers called our 800
00:46:33
number to report that they recognized
00:46:34
arthur franklin the individual said I'd
00:46:38
know where Arthur Frankfort is I'm his
00:46:41
ex brother-in-law my name is Floyd
00:46:43
meadows I asked him if he had ever seen
00:46:46
this Arthur Frankfort do magic he said
00:46:48
yes he did and he does it very well this
00:46:51
is one of the keys that I never released
00:46:53
to the press or any other medium that
00:46:56
Arthur Frankfort does magic we received
00:47:00
another call about 20 minutes later from
00:47:02
a white female since Arthur Frankfort
00:47:04
lives next door to me and Whitley
00:47:06
Kentucky this was the confirmation call
00:47:09
that I was looking for at that time
00:47:13
I knew we had our man two hours later
00:47:18
Frankford was arrested at his home in
00:47:20
Kentucky by the McCreary County Sheriff
00:47:22
and Kentucky State Troopers he was
00:47:24
living under the assumed name James
00:47:26
Ferguson with his new wife of two months
00:47:29
during a search of Frankfurt's house
00:47:31
police uncovered several identification
00:47:33
and credit cards with different aliases
00:47:35
they also found a handgun that may have
00:47:37
been stolen from mrs. Kay's home we got
00:47:41
other calls from women that say yes I've
00:47:44
been married to this man I've divorced
00:47:46
him he's left me holding the bag and
00:47:49
what I need is for the people that have
00:47:53
been victimized by Arthur Frankfort to
00:47:56
come forward it's time for the public to
00:47:59
stand up and say hey we've had enough of
00:48:01
Arthur Frankfort this man has preyed on
00:48:03
the public long enough
