00:02:17
this is the story of a cunning operator
00:02:20
who's allegedly built several
00:02:21
middle-aged women out of hundreds of
00:02:23
thousands of dollars the victim we are
00:02:25
about to meet whom he will call
00:02:27
Katherine never imagined that she'd fall
00:02:28
prey to a scam she was a successful
00:02:31
highly intelligent businesswoman who
00:02:33
owned one Wisconsin most popular hair
00:02:35
salons according to police she was
00:02:38
swindled by one of the most devious
00:02:39
conman to ever operate in the state no
00:02:42
one knows how many women is victimized
00:02:44
no one is even certain of his real name
00:02:49
September 1986 Katherine was at a
00:02:53
singles party when she was approached by
00:02:55
a well-dressed stranger who spoke with a
00:02:57
pronounced European accent he introduced
00:02:59
himself as Mary Kessler I was born in
00:03:02
Hamburg Germany the night I first met
00:03:06
Erik Kessler he presented himself as a
00:03:10
businessman who was in town on business
00:03:14
and would be staying for probably a year
00:03:18
some business associates have asked me
00:03:20
to look at some property here about some
00:03:22
I was impressed on his dress on his
00:03:26
mannerism I never got an impression that
00:03:31
he was even attempting to make a pass
00:03:35
here you work very concurring Katherine
00:03:40
to reveal intimate details about herself
00:03:42
he soon learned that she was divorced
00:03:45
operated a hair salon it was concerned
00:03:47
about being able to put her children
00:03:48
through college it's such a coincidence
00:03:52
that we should meet I'm talking with
00:03:54
some friends of mine from Western Europe
00:03:56
are telling me about some very important
00:03:59
changes in the cosmetology and then to
00:04:02
make a beauty business that this Jurek
00:04:04
happened I have a solution he had
00:04:06
learned it in a small resort town 120
00:04:09
miles away there was a prototype of an
00:04:11
invention which could revolutionize
00:04:13
Katherine's industry well I'd like to
00:04:16
hear about that what what area of the
00:04:17
businesses well it's very complex and
00:04:19
very technical but I this was the hook
00:04:21
that lured Katherine into Kessler's
00:04:23
scheme I did not get any impression that
00:04:28
this would be a physical relationship I
00:04:33
just felt that it was an opportunity yes
00:04:37
I was excited about it
00:04:41
Eric arranged for Katherine to see the
00:04:43
image system known as the video makeover
00:04:45
at that time it was the cutting edge of
00:04:48
technology enabling clients to see how
00:04:50
they would look with different hair
00:04:52
styles and colors now what if we cut off
00:04:55
a little bit on
00:04:56
can you do that why don't we do it that
00:04:58
way just by doing that I thought that
00:05:00
the concept was fantastic from you could
00:05:04
charge large amount money for Erich
00:05:09
Kessler had convinced Katherine that he
00:05:11
could place the system in a major
00:05:12
Midwest department store chain but she
00:05:15
needed to come up with the investment
00:05:17
capital to get them started Sylvia it's
00:05:21
called a video makeover
00:05:23
Katherine secured a $50,000 loan from a
00:05:26
wealthy friend Eric was to repay the
00:05:28
loan four months later she did not ask a
00:05:32
lot of questions because she believed in
00:05:34
me
00:05:34
she wrote a check for $50,000 that
00:05:40
Eric's insistence the business account
00:05:42
was established in Katherine's name
00:05:44
she had sole discretion over deposits
00:05:47
and withdrawals a few days later Eric
00:05:53
suggested that he move into Katherine's
00:05:54
basement so they could work more closely
00:05:56
together
00:05:57
it appeared that their business was
00:05:59
starting to take shape we brought in
00:06:03
another telephone line which was
00:06:04
strictly a business line at one point in
00:06:09
time my son took the message from the
00:06:12
department store saying they wanted to
00:06:15
set up a meeting with Erich Kessler he
00:06:18
was very convincing
00:06:20
before long Eric began to romance his
00:06:24
new partner when I really think about it
00:06:29
what he really did was to find out where
00:06:33
I was
00:06:34
business-wise I have dealt with people
00:06:39
who have attempted to con me or take me
00:06:43
in business matters when Erich Kessler
00:06:46
came into my life it never occurred to
00:06:50
me that the man was a con artist because
00:06:54
I certainly assumed that I would know I
00:06:58
would recognize that the fact that Eric
00:07:02
also made me feel that he was in love
00:07:06
with me
00:07:07
also put me off-guard
00:07:12
three weeks later Eric's conquest was
00:07:15
complete he surprised Catherine with a
00:07:17
most unusual gift I have a gift for you
00:07:36
that other bed was too small for us one
00:07:42
day when I came home from work there was
00:07:44
a king-size bed in my bedroom and he had
00:07:47
made the decision that it would be much
00:07:51
easier if he could have the office
00:07:54
downstairs and didn't have to use it
00:07:55
also as a bedroom and his way of doing
00:07:59
that was to bring in a king-size bed do
00:08:02
you like it I love it oh thank you Eric
00:08:14
seduction now evolved into a strategy of
00:08:16
psychological manipulation well here you
00:08:20
look so beautiful in the outfit I have
00:08:21
chosen for you it makes you feel good
00:08:24
makes you feel confident
00:08:26
Harry control Katherine's every decision
00:08:29
selecting her wardrobe her makeup the
00:08:31
jewelry she wore I did get to the point
00:08:35
that I I was not confident I mean I
00:08:38
wouldn't bought a pair of earrings at
00:08:40
that point because I didn't think that I
00:08:42
was capable of doing it anymore mr.
00:08:46
Castle Eric even convinced Katherine to
00:08:48
lease a high priced cadillac with all of
00:08:50
the options this package does include
00:08:53
the electric sliding sunroof the
00:08:54
hand-sewn leather upholstery the leather
00:08:57
covered steering wheel the am/fm stereo
00:08:59
radio with cassette and high performance
00:09:01
sound system and the six way adjustable
00:09:03
seats that's good I want the car
00:09:05
telephone it also includes a telephone
00:09:07
with a fully retractable antenna good
00:09:09
now on a 24 month closed-end lease
00:09:12
agreement that would bring your payments
00:09:15
down to four hundred eighty seven
00:09:17
dollars and seventy five cents a month
00:09:20
Erica I don't think this is a good idea
00:09:23
I don't think we have $500 a month to
00:09:27
spend on like yeah this is a taxable
00:09:29
deduction why can't you make an
00:09:31
intelligent business decision why are
00:09:34
you wasting the uruk's domination became
00:09:36
more calculating he deprived Catherine
00:09:39
of sleep insisting they conduct their
00:09:41
business at night after cheaper than a
00:09:43
full day of work at the saddle and on
00:09:45
evening entertaining prospective clients
00:09:54
[Music]
00:10:07
there must be noises to be paid yeah we
00:10:15
hadn't planned on these expenses many
00:10:18
times Eric demanded that Catherine give
00:10:20
him large cash advances claiming the
00:10:22
money was old to suppliers who would not
00:10:24
accept checks now we have accountants
00:10:28
Fiat business managers we have lawyers
00:10:30
we have tax cancer as a start-up capital
00:10:32
dwindled Harry convinced Catherine to
00:10:35
put an additional 20 thousand dollars of
00:10:37
her own money into the business I didn't
00:10:41
know who I was more angry with myself or
00:10:45
Eric all we had done is spent money it
00:10:49
had not been spent wisely Here I am as a
00:10:53
business woman and I have blown it I
00:10:57
mentioned to him that I thought that he
00:10:59
was a con man and I had thought about
00:11:02
going to the police he said what good
00:11:06
would it do you you got the money
00:11:08
you signed all of the checks you agreed
00:11:13
to all of the decisions that were made
00:11:15
there is nothing that ties me in I have
00:11:19
never signed anything it is your word
00:11:22
against mine
00:11:25
[Music]
00:11:29
the relationship completely
00:11:31
disintegrated Eric we have to talk
00:11:34
please
00:11:36
now Eric please yeah - wine please
00:11:41
Erica taken another lover and moved out
00:11:44
of Catherine's apartment when the day
00:11:46
arrived for Erik to repay the loan
00:11:48
Catherine met him at a bar to ask for
00:11:50
the money mister do I am supposed to
00:11:53
give Silvia $50,000 tonight there's no
00:11:56
money in the account what am I going to
00:11:59
do
00:11:59
you were right her a check with what
00:12:01
there's nothing left in the account I
00:12:04
have a check coming by special courier
00:12:07
tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. for
00:12:11
$50,000 and if they don't come what then
00:12:14
it would be mostly I was drained and I
00:12:19
was exhausted I wanted to believe that I
00:12:23
was going to get money I down deep I
00:12:26
didn't believe it but I had there was
00:12:28
the only thing I had left I had to hope
00:12:31
that the check was going to be there
00:12:36
I met my benefactor that night I wrote
00:12:39
the check I was very hesitant if it all
00:12:45
was going to come through
00:12:57
hello
00:13:01
I don't know who is this he bounced a
00:13:07
check in here last night for $1,000 and
00:13:10
I want to know where he is I don't know
00:13:11
when the bartender called me the next
00:13:13
morning right down I knew right then and
00:13:16
there it was all over
00:13:18
Catherine lost more than $75,000 and was
00:13:21
unable to pay for her children's
00:13:23
education she was forced into bankruptcy
00:13:25
and sold her business finally she left
00:13:28
Wisconsin and moved to another state to
00:13:30
start over again
00:13:33
authorities were certain that Edward
00:13:35
Maynard was somewhere in the u.s.
00:13:36
stalking his next victim calls to our
00:13:39
telecenter confirmed their suspicions
00:13:43
the night of our broadcast authorities
00:13:45
learned that Maynard had recently been
00:13:47
in Naples Florida using the alias Eric
00:13:50
Kelly last December he became
00:13:54
romantically involved with a woman who
00:13:55
will call and Maynard alias Kelly
00:13:58
persuaded and alone him fifteen thousand
00:14:01
dollars then left with their life
00:14:02
savings last February Maynard showed up
00:14:07
in San Antonio Texas once again using
00:14:09
the name Eric Kelly
00:14:10
he began wining and dining another woman
00:14:14
he kept talking about how that he could
00:14:17
really do a lot for me but of course it
00:14:19
would take a lot of money and he started
00:14:22
asking me if I had money how much I had
00:14:24
and so I started feeling very strongly
00:14:27
that something was wrong he said I need
00:14:37
you to loan me some money
00:14:38
and I indicated that I didn't want to at
00:14:40
that point he got very loud a violent
00:14:43
temper I needed now do you understand
00:14:48
and to be very honest he frightened me
00:14:50
so I gave him the money and I did not
00:14:52
see him again after that evening Barbara
00:14:56
notified the local sheriff's department
00:14:58
about her run-in with Eric Kelly
00:15:01
Wednesday evening I got a phone call
00:15:03
from someone in the Sheriff's Department
00:15:06
it said hey are you watching teeth
00:15:08
unsolved mysteries on TV our boy was
00:15:11
just on there I said Eric Kelly he said
00:15:14
yes bigger-than-life I'm getting ready
00:15:16
to call the FBI and give him all the
00:15:18
information than I have
00:15:20
four days later another viewers tip
00:15:22
placed Edward Maynard in Houston Texas
00:15:24
he was registered at this motel under
00:15:27
the same alias Eric Kelly the FBI closed
00:15:30
in we immediately dispatched a number of
00:15:35
agents out there in fact there was up to
00:15:37
eight agents that are on the scene and
00:15:39
within 45 minutes he was apprehended

00:15:57
next a story of an unscrupulous doctor
00:15:59
turned rapist who uses drugs to
00:16:02
overpower as victims
00:16:12
the crime of rape is a tragic and
00:16:15
all-too-frequent fact of life in the
00:16:16
United States
00:16:18
sadly the stigma attached to the women
00:16:20
who are victimized mean such crimes
00:16:21
often go unreported this is especially
00:16:24
true of date rape victim knows and even
00:16:27
trust the man who rapes her in our next
00:16:30
story the methods of the rapist are
00:16:31
particularly in cities this is a case of
00:16:34
a doctor who uses a powerful sedative to
00:16:36
render his victims helpless and then
00:16:38
assaults them one woman agreed to talk
00:16:41
to us on the condition that we do not
00:16:42
use her real name Saturday night a bar
00:16:50
in Bakersfield California
00:16:52
patty Roberts and Stephanie Phillips
00:16:54
were shooting pool we were greeted by a
00:16:56
friendly skeptic he introduced the two
00:17:01
women to his companion dr. Kenneth Frank
00:17:05
Stephanie and Patti agreed to join them
00:17:07
in for a drink immediately I liked Oh
00:17:14
i he was well-dressed well men so he's
00:17:20
real friendly doctor yes what do you do
00:17:26
I'm a dental assistant well I'm studying
00:17:29
to be a dental assistant you serious
00:17:31
about it really I work with a couple of
00:17:35
dentists he said he had a friend and he
00:17:37
said he might be hiring and he would
00:17:41
give me card
00:17:42
you know referral and all that that help
00:17:45
you out yes
00:17:46
hey no problem I'd love to do basically
00:17:50
he he did that professional okay well
00:17:55
okay why walk to the restroom and I was
00:18:01
talking to this girl that was in there
00:18:02
so I was in there a few seconds and then
00:18:04
I came back out and he was still sitting
00:18:07
there and my friend had was not there
00:18:12
it's been late they decided to leave
00:18:15
they're not coming back first I thought
00:18:17
he was just playing and I said no really
00:18:20
knows what yeah I said what he said I
00:18:23
can give you a ride home and I said no
00:18:24
way
00:18:25
she didn't show ever a few minutes later
00:18:28
and I was ready to go and so I said okay
00:18:30
well do you want to still give me the
00:18:31
ride home and he said sure and I said
00:18:34
you sure you don't mind he said no so he
00:18:37
left in his car and then he wanted to
00:18:39
stop by his apartment
00:18:42
to do something he said and I wanted him
00:18:44
to get that job referral that he had
00:18:47
told me about a dentist fan that was
00:18:48
hiring by the time they got to dr.
00:18:53
Frank's apartment that Saturday night
00:18:54
patty was complaining of a chest cold
00:18:57
here we go just make you feel a lot
00:19:01
better drink that dr. Frank Whitley
00:19:04
mixed up a home remedy a special coffee
00:19:07
drink he claimed would alleviate Patti's
00:19:09
call
00:19:12
I drank it quickly
00:19:15
it wasn't long after that my eyes
00:19:18
started getting blurry and then I was
00:19:21
sitting there trying to figure out why
00:19:22
my eyes were blurry and then my ears
00:19:27
started ringing
00:19:30
and then I just I fell over I remember
00:19:34
laying there and I
00:19:40
[Music]
00:19:46
daddy come on patty time to wake up it
00:19:49
was not until Monday morning that patty
00:19:51
awoke she would soon discover that while
00:19:54
she slept she had been raped seven
00:19:58
o'clock it's Monday morning I've got to
00:20:00
get to work come on let's get going
00:20:03
Monday morning I couldn't figure out
00:20:06
what happened to Sunday somewhere I lost
00:20:10
Sunday you raped me I didn't rape you I
00:20:15
knew that he had taken advantage of me
00:20:17
and I I was so mad I just felt like you
00:20:20
know I wanted to hurt him like he hurt
00:20:22
me you know my feelings cuz I that
00:20:25
wasn't given to him he took it patty had
00:20:29
been knocked out for at least 26 hours
00:20:31
still groggy and disoriented as yet
00:20:34
unaware that she had been drugged patty
00:20:36
had the doctor drive her home we turned
00:20:40
the corner right by my apartment and I
00:20:42
lived in a really huge apartment complex
00:20:44
so I told him to let me out there I
00:20:46
didn't want him to see what apartment I
00:20:48
lived in because I didn't want him to
00:20:49
come after me patty I wouldn't tell
00:20:52
anybody about this if I were you
00:20:54
if you do like so we'll have to fix it
00:20:56
so you can't
00:21:05
I started reading trying to get to my
00:21:07
apartment
00:21:09
[Music]
00:21:13
as I got to my apartment which was in
00:21:17
the very back I saw him in his car he
00:21:21
was right in front of me so he knew at
00:21:24
that point where I lived I went home and
00:21:28
took a shower and I went to my aunt's
00:21:31
house and I just started feeling
00:21:35
nauseated real real bad and I remember
00:21:41
getting sick everywhere and I couldn't
00:21:43
you know I couldn't help it it was kind
00:21:45
of like the flu or something
00:21:49
Patti continued to be immobilized by dr.
00:21:52
Frank's home remedy spending much of the
00:21:54
rest of the day in a deep drug-induced
00:21:55
sleep like many victims of rape Patti
00:22:00
was so overcome by fear and
00:22:02
embarrassment she could not yet bring
00:22:04
herself to go to the police
00:22:05
[Music]
00:22:09
seven days later Patti had a second
00:22:12
encounter with dr. Frey who acted as if
00:22:14
nothing was wrong
00:22:15
Patti decided to play a lawyer hoping to
00:22:18
get frankly admit his crime I was kind
00:22:22
of offended at first and I thought well
00:22:24
if I'm gonna find out anything you know
00:22:26
there have to be nice to asking
00:22:29
questions and stuff
00:22:31
so tell me what was that stuff he gave
00:22:35
me the other night I didn't give you
00:22:37
anything we just had a good time you can
00:22:41
tell me some some pretty wild stuff he
00:22:45
was gonna tell me he didn't give me
00:22:46
anything and then he told me that it was
00:22:49
a sedative and then I was kind of like
00:22:53
an experiment for him you raped me I was
00:23:00
really angry at him did and when after I
00:23:02
started screaming yelling at him he knew
00:23:04
that I I wasn't gonna play his little
00:23:06
games anymore because I had decided then
00:23:09
I was gonna go
00:23:14
basically I just looked around at all
00:23:16
the little girls out there running
00:23:19
around they don't know about stuff like
00:23:21
this and I thought you know if I can at
00:23:25
least give a report to the police then I
00:23:28
can help someone else three months after
00:23:32
the rape patty filed an official police
00:23:34
report but stopped short of pressing
00:23:36
charges she was worried that a trial
00:23:39
would come down to her word against dr.
00:23:41
Frank's an unknown student against an
00:23:44
established physician patty also
00:23:47
believed that being associated with a
00:23:49
rape case would jeopardize her future
00:23:51
chances for employment are you willing
00:23:53
to press charges
00:23:55
no she also feared the dr. Frank might
00:23:58
make good on his threat to harm her if
00:24:01
if he does this again to somebody else
00:24:04
yes I will four months after he had
00:24:12
raped patty dr. Frank raped another
00:24:14
woman
00:24:15
theirs was an established professional
00:24:17
relationship this victim too was given a
00:24:20
sedative when she awoke 24 hours later
00:24:23
Frank admitted that he had drugged her
00:24:25
it was later estimated that the amount
00:24:28
of the sedative in her system was eight
00:24:30
times greater than that normally
00:24:32
administered to patients in surgery she
00:24:36
was a professional woman in town in her
00:24:38
mid 30s and after she became aware of
00:24:42
this situation after dr. Frank told her
00:24:44
what happened she went to a local lab in
00:24:46
town had her blood tested for the drug
00:24:49
he told her he had given her and it did
00:24:52
come back positive for that particular
00:24:54
drug and then she went to the police
00:24:59
based on the statements of Patty and the
00:25:01
other victim Kenneth Frank was arrested
00:25:04
in February of 1986 legal wrangling the
00:25:08
latest trial until December of 1989
00:25:11
Frank showed up on time for every court
00:25:14
appearance December 20th 1989 the jury
00:25:17
rendered his verdict he was convicted of
00:25:22
two counts of rape by administering and
00:25:25
intoxicating or anesthetic substance
00:25:27
carries the same amount of time is what
00:25:29
more common type of rape known as a
00:25:31
forcible rape the what happened is the
00:25:35
jury verdict came in and at that time I
00:25:38
requested the judge take the defendant
00:25:41
into custody because he was looking at a
00:25:43
maximum of 16 years in state prison he
00:25:45
was out on his own recognizance at the
00:25:47
time so there was no bail up at all and
00:25:50
the judge declined to do that when he
00:25:52
came up for sentencing 28 days which is
00:25:55
the normal period of time he didn't show
00:25:57
up
00:25:58
[Music]
00:26:11
when we return the bizarre tale of a
00:26:14
mild-mannered man whose temper suddenly
00:26:16
erupted at work on a very day he
00:26:19
vanished
00:26:19
what happened to Daniel Wilson Dan
00:26:34
Wilson of Spokane Washington was known
00:26:36
as a quiet religious man in 1986 when
00:26:41
Dan was 33 his marriage broke up but he
00:26:44
remained close to his young son and
00:26:45
daughter and visited the lawful 1987 Dan
00:26:51
suffered a nervous breakdown which he
00:26:52
felt was due to the trauma does divorce
00:26:56
by the summer of 1988 Howard was off his
00:26:59
medication and seemed to have his life
00:27:01
back under control in June dan went to
00:27:06
work at the ASC machine tool company in
00:27:08
Spokane and according to co-workers with
00:27:11
a steady reliable employee then Sutton
00:27:15
August 24th everything changed
00:27:19
[Music]
00:27:24
every time I try to get my work did you
00:27:25
come down here and give me a hard time
00:27:26
about it what's going on wait with I
00:27:28
didn't say anything about your work heck
00:27:30
yeah I know what you've been saying what
00:27:32
they've all been saying about me I don't
00:27:34
like I don't need to be quiet I just
00:27:36
want you to leave me alone so I get my
00:27:38
work done all right
00:27:39
dan Wilson's Foreman I was shocked by
00:27:41
the outburst Ian the plant manager were
00:27:43
concerned told Dan to take time off who
00:27:46
returned to work whenever he felt ready
00:27:50
Dan left the pilot 11 o'clock in the
00:27:52
morning was Wednesday August the 24th
00:27:56
1988
00:27:57
[Music]
00:28:06
two days went by dan Wilson's neighbors
00:28:10
noticed that his sprinklers had been
00:28:11
left running but Friday they turned them
00:28:14
off never suspecting that anything was
00:28:16
wrong
00:28:16
dan was not scheduled to visit his
00:28:19
children that weekend so his ex-wife
00:28:20
never noticed he was missing his mother
00:28:23
lived in Colorado telephone it was not
00:28:25
alarmed when she received no answer
00:28:27
Saturday then Sunday came and went no
00:28:30
one even knew Dan Wilson was missing
00:28:36
Sunday August 29th 1988 in a remote area
00:28:41
of Custer County mom town and encar was
00:28:44
investigated by Sheriff Tony Harbaugh
00:28:52
when the car was found the doors were
00:28:56
unlocked in fact one of the doors was
00:28:57
ajar check for keys the keys were not in
00:29:01
the vehicle when it was found there were
00:29:04
a few miscellaneous items one of which
00:29:06
was a Bible laying on the front so you
00:29:08
had a Bible on this Daniel Wilson
00:29:10
inscribed in the front of it
00:29:12
sheriff Harbaugh traced the car to
00:29:14
Daniel says it had been abandoned more
00:29:17
than 700 miles from Dan Spokane
00:29:19
residence there was no luggage in the
00:29:24
car to indicate that animal was planning
00:29:26
a trip nothing that would really give us
00:29:29
a firm indication of what Daniel was
00:29:31
thinking or doing in the area record
00:29:35
this location of this vehicle towed into
00:29:37
town we conducted both ground and aerial
00:29:39
searches it's my belief that if Daniel
00:29:43
Wilson was in the area in in any of the
00:29:46
area that we covered we should have
00:29:48
found him at that time there seemed to
00:29:52
be no explanation for Dan's car being
00:29:54
found abandoned in the middle of the
00:29:56
Montana Prairie
00:29:58
baffled Dan's mother Darlene Wilson
00:30:01
along with two of his cousin's went to
00:30:03
Montana to talk to the sheriff I looked
00:30:05
for some answers we've checked the car
00:30:08
we've searched the ground around the
00:30:10
area here the sheriff told us the car
00:30:13
looked like it had just been parked
00:30:15
there and that someone had walked away
00:30:17
from it they had looked under the hood
00:30:20
and there was nothing wrong there and
00:30:23
there was a third of a tank of gas thank
00:30:27
you
00:30:28
I couldn't visualize in my mind that he
00:30:34
would just walk away from the car and
00:30:38
just take off it certainly was not an
00:30:41
area where you would expect a person
00:30:45
would stop and take a walk I really
00:30:51
feared for his safety from the beginning
00:30:53
because of the State of Mind he was in
00:30:57
Glenda had visited Dan two days before
00:31:00
he disappeared she was surprised by the
00:31:03
disarray in his home looking around I
00:31:07
seen that the children had been there
00:31:08
that weekend things had been left quite
00:31:12
messy which was very uncharacteristic
00:31:13
for him he seemed agitated and he seemed
00:31:20
real tired it is everything okay Oh
00:31:23
early shifts at the job and trouble
00:31:25
there you know before she left
00:31:28
Glenda suggested that Dan take time off
00:31:30
to visit the family on Colorado 48 hours
00:31:38
later Dan had his outburst at work and
00:31:40
vanished
00:31:43
his family believed he had taken
00:31:45
Glenda's advice and started for Colorado
00:31:48
to visit
00:31:53
Dan's family lived here in Longmont
00:31:55
Colorado he had made the trip from spoke
00:31:57
and a long walk many times before
00:32:02
using the roof he normally traveled
00:32:04
interstate 90 Dan would have headed
00:32:06
south at Billings Montana
00:32:08
instead dan turned on to a different
00:32:11
highway Interstate 94 heading due east
00:32:15
he continued for 150 miles into the
00:32:18
sparsely populated area of Montana or
00:32:20
his Carla's father Howard Dan strayed so
00:32:25
far off course on such a familiar route
00:32:28
his mother suspected foul play
00:32:34
I know that he did pick up hitchhikers
00:32:38
if he felt he could give somebody a ride
00:32:41
he would I'm concerned that maybe he was
00:32:45
not the first thing that parked the car
00:32:47
in Montana that it could have been
00:32:50
somebody else determined to unravel the
00:32:56
mystery Dan's mother and cousins went
00:32:58
back to Spokane Dan's form was an even
00:33:01
worse disarray than when Glenda had
00:33:03
visited ten days earlier
00:33:06
I'll go look in the bedrooms
00:33:10
surprisingly his luggage his clothes and
00:33:12
a nun cash paycheck for all is still in
00:33:15
the house suitcases are still here I
00:33:17
couldn't see where he had taken anything
00:33:21
at all not even a toothbrush a razor
00:33:26
they just looked like that he had just
00:33:29
left and and intended to come back
00:33:35
the next day Dan's family left Spokane
00:33:37
more puzzled than ever
00:33:39
Darlene and Glenda drove Dan's car on
00:33:42
the return trip enroute they both had
00:33:45
sore throats he felt an odd burning
00:33:47
sensation in their eyes
00:33:52
now my eyes a bit
00:33:54
as soon as they returned home they had
00:33:56
the car inspected folks what we have
00:33:58
here is a faulty muffler on the car it
00:34:01
could be allowing exhaust gases to enter
00:34:05
into the interior of the car I would say
00:34:07
the car would be unsafe to drive it
00:34:10
appeared that a carbon monoxide leak in
00:34:12
the muffler might have caused Darlene's
00:34:13
and Glenda's physical symptoms thank you
00:34:16
then had been driving the same car every
00:34:18
day for over a year it is possible the
00:34:21
carbon monoxide poisoning could have
00:34:23
caused him severe physical and emotional
00:34:25
damage
00:34:28
chronic exposure to carbon monoxide can
00:34:31
cause fatigue can cause definite changes
00:34:34
in personality confusion can cause
00:34:38
permanent loss of function of the brain
00:34:41
intellectual ability memory as well as
00:34:44
severe personality changes resembling
00:34:47
psychosis
00:34:51
a memory loss confusion and Misha maybe
00:34:58
he knows his name but maybe that's about
00:35:00
all maybe he doesn't realize for his
00:35:03
family is or how to get in touch with
00:35:05
any of them
00:35:08
Darlene Wilson flooded the state of
00:35:11
Montana with fliers in late November of
00:35:14
1988 a homeless shelter in Billings
00:35:16
Montana set Darlene a copy of his desk
00:35:18
register
00:35:21
registers showed that a Daniel Wilson
00:35:23
had signed in to spend the night on a
00:35:25
member 12 nearly three months after
00:35:27
Donna disappeared
00:35:30
Darleen compared the signature with one
00:35:32
of her sons a similarity was striking so
00:35:36
she and her nephew decided to go to
00:35:38
Billings and talk to the men who ran the
00:35:40
shelter still clinging to the fragile
00:35:46
hope that Dan might be wandering
00:35:48
aimlessly knowing his name but nothing
00:35:50
else
00:35:50
Darlene brought along several
00:35:52
photographs of him hoping for a positive
00:35:54
identification could help us I believe
00:36:09
I've seen this young man David oh yeah
00:36:14
we've seen before
00:36:15
I'm serious about the night too it was
00:36:18
really a sense of relief for us we
00:36:21
thought surely if he has been here that
00:36:25
recently that he still would be around
00:36:27
somewhere where we could find him
00:36:29
so we distributed more posters around in
00:36:34
buildings and throughout all the area
00:36:37
from Billings into Spokane again
00:36:45
there has been no trace of Dan Wilson
00:36:48
for nearly two years
00:36:51
authorities found no sign of violence
00:36:53
and no evidence of a second person in
00:36:56
Dan's car so they have tended to
00:36:58
discount the foul play they made they
00:37:01
have however suggested the possibility
00:37:03
that Dan Wilson made a conscious choice
00:37:05
to disappear I feel it's not impossible
00:37:10
that Dan made a decision to disappear
00:37:14
and start a new life he was under a
00:37:17
great deal of pressure he had not had a
00:37:19
happy life since coming to Spokane but I
00:37:24
feel the possibilities are small due to
00:37:28
the fact he was so devoted to his
00:37:30
children and he felt the children needed
00:37:33
him so badly I feel that whatever has
00:37:37
happened is something beyond his control
00:37:42
he could be most anywhere and we would
00:37:45
each be able to locate him or he
00:37:47
wouldn't be able to locate us

robberies executed with military

precision
00:38:13
an ingenious gang of thieves is still at
00:38:16
large every day billions of dollars and
00:38:31
hard kurtz been transported by armored
00:38:33
cars considered by most criminals to be
00:38:36
impregnable these vehicles have recently
00:38:38
been targeted by a brazen heavily armed
00:38:41
gang who carry out their raids with
00:38:43
almost military precision

don't overshoot

00:39:02
robbers go that was quickly subdued no
00:39:05
shots were fired at these guys scenes up
00:39:09
move very smoothly they didn't seem to
00:39:11
be in a hurry or panicky or Nothing they
00:39:13
very smooth these robbers come very
00:39:16
heavily armed and and very much ready to
00:39:20
shoot almost simultaneous the second
00:39:24
phase of the heist began another vehicle
00:39:26
pulled up in front of the armored car
00:39:28
cutting off any route of escape
00:39:30
a fourth robber then placed what
00:39:34
appeared to be a bomb a trucks hood
00:39:37
[Music]
00:39:45
in just under a minute robbers had
00:39:47
stolen close to 1 million dollars
00:39:49
and then vanished without a trace it
00:39:55
seemed like kind of a commando type
00:39:57
thing like these people had been well
00:39:59
trained at that type of thing or well
00:40:01
practiced a bomb squad was immediately
00:40:04
dispatched to the scene attaching guide
00:40:08
wires to the device they carefully
00:40:10
removed it from a trucks hood x-ray is
00:40:16
later revealed a bomb was a fake
00:40:18
the FBI concluded that it was nothing
00:40:20
more than a genius delaying tactic the
00:40:25
FBI linked this fake bomb to an
00:40:27
identical device using the Baltimore
00:40:29
Maryland robbery three years earlier in
00:40:31
that operation the thieves made off of
00:40:33
over $600,000 the FBI concluded both
00:40:37
robberies were executed by the same gang
00:40:40
[Music]
00:40:42
in the first two heists through a
00:40:44
combination of careful planning a
00:40:45
clockwork timing the crooks is stolen
00:40:47
1.6 million dollars they had also
00:40:50
brilliantly covered their tracks
00:40:52
every vehicle they had use had been
00:40:54
stolen wiped clean of evidence and then
00:40:56
abandoned it was thought that the gang
00:40:58
would quit while there were a million
00:40:59
dollars ahead but one year later they
00:41:02
struck again March 27th 1990 Burnsville
00:41:08
Minnesota was ten miles from the scene
00:41:11
of the last robbery as one Brinks guard
00:41:14
waited in the cab another made a cash
00:41:16
pickup in a local bank
00:41:18
[Music]
00:41:26
underground underground right now okay
00:41:31
once again the second guard was caught
00:41:33
behind the wheel as I turned around I
00:41:36
see this band that was coming up in
00:41:38
front of me I hit the ban real hard I
00:41:46
knew that I turned my siren on shots
00:41:49
went on scared the living daylights out
00:41:52
of me I made a circle to come around so
00:41:56
I could see what's going on and when I
00:41:59
was about 3/4 of the way through my
00:42:01
circle I could see where our cart was as
00:42:05
ice going by I could see my partner in
00:42:07
the ground all the shots that were going
00:42:09
on
00:42:09
I thought they'd killed him I thought he
00:42:11
was dead he was just laying on the
00:42:13
ground fortunately that guard was
00:42:15
uninjured hey [ __ ] back at the time I
00:42:19
thought well I got these guys right
00:42:21
where I want
00:42:22
[Applause]
00:42:24
I just rammed it as hard as I could
00:42:27
[Music]
00:42:38
despite the collision robbers still
00:42:41
managed to get away it's a real lucky
00:42:44
situation that some innocent bystander
00:42:46
wasn't killed because there were a
00:42:48
number of shots fired and there were a
00:42:50
number of shoppers passing and Bank
00:42:52
customers passing right by the area
00:42:58
the robbers abandoned their car behind a
00:43:00
nearby shopping center and left on foot
00:43:03
the FBI theorized that they may have had
00:43:05
another vehicle parked nearby which they
00:43:08
used to leave the area
00:43:17
authorities quickly cordoned off the men
00:43:20
they brought in tracking dogs road dogs
00:43:24
were set up the gang at once again made
00:43:27
a clean getaway
00:43:29
the following morning police found one
00:43:31
of the gang stolen cars less than a mile
00:43:34
from the bank as in the other ride it
00:43:38
contained no evidence that identified
00:43:40
the robbers currently all the
00:43:43
authorities can do is wait for the
00:43:45
elusive robbers to strike again these
00:43:48
individuals could be living anywhere in
00:43:50
the United States and we would like to
00:43:51
get information from anybody who has any
00:43:55
indication that people that may be able
00:43:59
to perpetrate this type of crime have
00:44:01
come into a lot of money or that had the
00:44:03
capability to commit these robberies and
00:44:06
in any one of these three cities there
00:44:09
are apparently at least four members of
00:44:11
the gang and authorities have managed to
00:44:13
create composites of three of the men
00:44:16
the first suspect is a white male in his
00:44:19
late 30s with five feet nine inches tall
00:44:21
with dark hair and a dark mustache
00:44:25
suspect number two is white between 35
00:44:29
and 38 years old about six feet in
00:44:31
height weighs between 170 and 180 pounds
00:44:35
the third suspect is approximately 6
00:44:38
feet tall is between 35 and 40 years old
00:44:41
he has gray or white hair and may wear a
00:44:44
false beard the same color
