Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 11, Episode 6 - Full Episode

May 23, 2019 / 43:46

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the disappearances of Brian Eisen and Lea Roberts, the infamous Lizzie Borden case, and a violent police chase in Kentucky.

Brian Eisen, an 18-year-old student at Roger Williams University, vanished in 1997. Six months later, his remains were discovered on Hog Island beach. Investigators discuss the possibility of suicide or foul play, with Brian's family believing he was murdered.

The episode also revisits the Lizzie Borden case, where Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally murdered in 1892. The Borden house is now a bed-and-breakfast, with reports of ghostly activity. Staff and guests share eerie experiences and the belief that the spirits may be trying to communicate.

Lea Roberts, a college student, disappeared after embarking on a cross-country journey inspired by Jack Kerouac. Her Jeep was found in Mount Baker National Forest, but there was no sign of her. Friends and family express concern over her well-being, and investigators consider various theories regarding her fate.

Lastly, a police chase in Kentucky escalates into a shootout with Deputy Scott Elder, who encounters Steven Howard Anderson, a militia member. Anderson is now wanted for attempted murder and has a significant cache of weapons.

00:02:28
fall of 1996 18 year old Brian Eisen
00:02:32
fell left his New Jersey home for Roger
00:02:34
Williams University in Rhode Island he
00:02:37
looked forward to earning a degree in
00:02:39
architecture as Brian had grown up he
00:02:43
rarely ventured outside the safe
00:02:45
confines of his Family Circle yet he
00:02:48
wrote in his high-school yearbook that
00:02:50
his dream was to make a difference in
00:02:52
the world now he was setting off in
00:02:55
pursuit of that dream during his second
00:03:00
semester at Roger Williams University
00:03:01
Brian left his afternoon literature
00:03:04

00:03:14
six months later on a serene Labor Day
00:03:17
weekend laurie veils and her daughter
00:03:19
chelsea stroll on Hog Island beach just
00:03:22
a few miles from the University I
00:03:24
noticed a shoe on the sand that was at
00:03:28
the high tide line and I just kind of
00:03:35
poked the the shoe with my stick and it
00:03:39
seemed hard like something had been
00:03:41
stuck inside the shoe I realized there
00:03:44
was like a white very shiny white almost
00:03:47
plastic looking smooth surface and
00:03:49
around it like a fleshy substance so I
00:03:53
knew right at that point that there was
00:03:56
a foot inside the shoe DNA test
00:04:00
determined the foot and a shin bone
00:04:02
found close by were those of Brian Eisen
00:04:05
film authorities found no other remains
00:04:08
but could only conclude that Brian was
00:04:10
dead when it was announced that the
00:04:13
bones were possibly Brian's it gave us
00:04:19
some kind of relief knowing that he
00:04:24
didn't just wander off but to lose
00:04:26
someone that you love so much is very
00:04:29
hard it's a catastrophic event it
00:04:32
changes your life forever you know you
00:04:36
go on and you're never the same again
00:04:38
your piece of what you used to be
00:04:48
brian isin felt often sought solitude
00:04:51
here less than a mile from his campus
00:04:53
dormitory intelligent and introspective
00:04:57
he had a passion for poetry he was
00:05:00
well-liked yet had few close friends
00:05:03
from the day he vanished On February 6
00:05:05
1997
00:05:07
no one could seem to agree what happened
00:05:11
some believe he may have slipped and
00:05:13
fell from his favorite seaside haunt
00:05:15
drowning just offshore others thought he
00:05:19
might have been distraught and
00:05:20
deliberately leaped from Mount Hope
00:05:22
Bridge under cover of darkness but the
00:05:26
most disturbing possibility was that an
00:05:28
unknown assailant killed Brian then
00:05:30
dumped his body in the cold Atlantic
00:05:32
waters what really happened to Brian
00:05:35
Eisen filled largely based on the fact
00:05:41
that we have not uncovered any evidence
00:05:45
whatsoever of foul play we're inclined
00:05:48
to believe this this perhaps may have
00:05:50
been a suicide
00:05:51
I don't think Brian would commit suicide
00:05:54
I don't think he did commit suicide
00:05:56
there's no evidence of that there's
00:05:59
never been any evidence of that it's all
00:06:01
theory and an accident I guess it's
00:06:04
possible but in my heart my gut I don't
00:06:07
think that was the case I believe Brian
00:06:09
was murdered to this day I believe Brian
00:06:12
was murdered in a search for answers
00:06:14
investigators try to reconstruct Brian's
00:06:17
brief term at Roger Williams University
00:06:19
from the beginning his life there was a
00:06:22
struggle
00:06:24
Brian's academic career in high school
00:06:27
came very easily for him this was much
00:06:29
more of a challenge and with it being
00:06:31
his first time away from home he missed
00:06:34
his family that he was so close to and I
00:06:38
don't think he realized how much his
00:06:39
family meant to him until he actually
00:06:41
went away so I think Brian was homesick
00:06:44
he didn't do very well that forced mr.
00:06:46
briney
00:06:47
his grades kind of plummeted
00:06:51
investigators believe Brian's difficult
00:06:53
transition to life on his own
00:06:55
might have driven him to commit suicide
00:06:56
with something more sinister may have
00:07:00
led to his disappearance
00:07:02
something that surfaced from the shadowy
00:07:04
corners of his private life midnight
00:07:07
January 30th 1997 today that you have to
00:07:15
come up and get me just by the
00:07:16
inflection of his voice I knew that he
00:07:19
was the crisis mode I knew that he was
00:07:21
scared and he said this kid is
00:07:23
threatening me harassing me on the phone
00:07:25
was threatening to get on campus it's
00:07:27
written in to beat him up he said that
00:07:29
he could get to him anytime he wanted
00:07:31
and I thought if this kid can get on the
00:07:33
campus then security has to know about
00:07:35
it Brian
00:07:39
campus security called the student
00:07:41
advisor in Brian's dormitory the
00:07:45
threatening calls Brian said were from a
00:07:47
student he knew but was no longer
00:07:49
attending the University what motivated
00:07:52
the corner however Brian was either
00:07:54
unable or unwilling to say okay but
00:07:59
Brian now see more trouble than ever
00:08:04
after he left his literature class on
00:08:06
February 6th he was never seen alive
00:08:08
again
00:08:09
six days would pass however before his
00:08:12
absence was deemed suspicious once
00:08:16
notified by the University Brian's
00:08:18
father instantly set out on the
00:08:20
five-hour drive from New Jersey when I
00:08:23
heard that that my son you know that
00:08:25
Brian was missing for a week two things
00:08:28
happened in my mind when I go through a
00:08:29
state of disbelief and shock and the
00:08:32
other thing is I got to find him
00:08:35
I got to get involved I have to see what
00:08:37
the hell happened
00:08:41
of course Brian's room nothing's changed
00:08:47
it's exactly the way we found it
00:08:55
well still heresies it's the middle of
00:08:58
the winter it looked like he stepped out
00:09:02
to get a soda or go to dinner or
00:09:05
something it looked like I should wait
00:09:07
and he's gonna show up again but it was
00:09:09
seven days it was a week since he
00:09:12
disappeared so I knew he wasn't coming
00:09:13
back to the room
00:09:14
[Music]
00:09:18
Brian's Paras believe the former student
00:09:20
who allegedly Menace Brian over the
00:09:22
phone may have carried out his threat
00:09:25
investigators discovered his identity
00:09:27
and learned that he and Brian had been
00:09:29
close friends during his first semester
00:09:32
reporter Jody Erickson wrote a series of
00:09:35
articles about Brian's disappearance
00:09:37
Brian being unsure of himself having
00:09:40
some freshman jitters really seemed to
00:09:42
gravitate toward this one student I
00:09:45
dunno just from talking to Brian's
00:09:47
parents and reading some of Brian's
00:09:49
poetry that he did seem to be a young
00:09:52
man who was questioning his sexuality
00:09:53
and while I am not sure whether it was
00:09:57
an overt homosexual relationship I do
00:10:00
think that there were undertones of that
00:10:02
whatever the nature of their friendship
00:10:04
it abruptly ended for reasons known only
00:10:08
to Brian and his friend certainly one of
00:10:11
the theories that I've explored is that
00:10:14
this former student was going to expose
00:10:16
his relationship with Brian that there
00:10:19
were certain things that Brian didn't
00:10:21
want his parents to know didn't want his
00:10:23
hometown to know and that his
00:10:24
homosexuality could have been one of
00:10:26
them was it possible that Brian was gay
00:10:30
well I guess it's possible he would not
00:10:32
say what soured their relationship he
00:10:37
would not tell me anything in
00:10:40
relationship to the relationship with
00:10:42
the former student that Brian took his
00:10:45
own life unable to face public exposure
00:10:47
that he was gay or did his turbulent
00:10:50
friendship lead to his murder the former
00:10:53
student in my opinion had something to
00:10:56
do with Brian's death he may not have
00:10:59
been actual person to have done him in
00:11:01
but I think he had something to do with
00:11:04
Brian's death we were able to
00:11:07
meet with that individual conduct a
00:11:11
comprehensive interview of him and we
00:11:14
are fully satisfied that that person had
00:11:18
absolutely no responsibility in in the
00:11:24
disappearance of Brian nice and felt
00:11:26
more than four years have passed since
00:11:29
Brian's disappearance for Brian's
00:11:32
parents for years filled with pain and
00:11:34
unanswered questions it's every parent's
00:11:38
worst nightmare if it happened to us it
00:11:44
could happen to you
00:11:46
your child your daughter your son your
00:11:48
nephew
00:11:49
it could happen to you I know somebody
00:11:51
knows something they're just afraid to
00:11:54
talk and I don't know why but they are
00:11:56
afraid to talk they're afraid to come
00:11:58
forward somebody has to know something
00:12:01
about Brian if you ever find yourself in
00:12:21
Fall River Massachusetts you might
00:12:23
consider staying in this quaint country

the scene of one of the most gruesome
00:12:54
unsolved mysteries in US history is now
00:12:57
open for business visitors can enjoy an
00:13:03
informative chat about the sadistic
00:13:06
murders about eating a breakfast of
00:13:08
Johnny cakes and mutton broth the same
00:13:10
meal Abbi and andrew borden ate on their
00:13:13
final day
00:13:15
guests can then linger in the parlor our
00:13:18
Andrews head received 11 unexpected
00:13:21
blows from an axe and after a long day
00:13:24
of sightseeing you can drift off to
00:13:26
sleep in the same bedroom where Abby
00:13:28
Borden's pummelled body was discovered
00:13:30
lifeless on the floor some of the guests
00:13:35
do try to figure out you know who did it
00:13:38
not surprisingly most people do not
00:13:40
sleep easily there are numerous reports
00:13:44
that the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast
00:13:46
is haunted
00:13:47
I think the apparitions and all the
00:13:51
activity that has been happening in the
00:13:52
house is a possibility that the spirits
00:13:55
were trying to communicate through
00:13:58
myself my staff or my guess of who
00:14:01
really committed the murders so they can
00:14:03
rest in peace put the story to sleep but
00:14:06
once and for all on August 4th 1892
00:14:10
wealthy businessman Andrew Borden and
00:14:13
his wife Fabio brutally hacked to death
00:14:14
in their home Andrews 32 year old
00:14:17
spinster daughter Lizzie was arrested
00:14:19
for the double murder her trial however
00:14:22
ended an acquittal and to this day
00:14:24
nobody knows who committed the savage
00:14:26
crime nobody that is except for the
00:14:29
victims themselves and the murderer all
00:14:32
of whom are long since dead are are they
00:14:39
in 1968 Martha McGann moved into the
00:14:42
Borden house which had been purchased by
00:14:44
her grandparents 43 years earlier
00:14:47
according to Martha she soon became
00:14:50
aware of an unsettling presence working
00:14:53
in the shadows of the aging building
00:14:55
when I was about 16 years old I was in
00:14:58
my bedroom
00:14:59
reading a book and above my room I could
00:15:03
distinctly hear footsteps and the sound
00:15:09
of like Marvel's being played and it
00:15:14
almost sounded like little children's
00:15:15
laughter shortly thereafter
00:15:23
Martha witness another strange
00:15:26
phenomenon this one far more disturbing
00:15:29
than the last I went up the stairway in
00:15:31
the window at the end of the second
00:15:33
floor car duck just began opening and
00:15:36
slamming shut it was just violently
00:15:41
going up and down I got the creepy
00:15:47
crawlies that time Martha became
00:15:51
convinced that a ghost was prowling her
00:15:53
home tormenting her at every opportunity
00:15:55
but who and why
00:15:59
the answer to that question may have
00:16:02
come when Martha made the mistake of
00:16:03
entering the basement alone here legend
00:16:09
holds is where Lizzie hid the axe
00:16:11
she used to butcher her stepmother and
00:16:13
father a shadow sort of like a
00:16:17
silhouette floated many four inches
00:16:19
above the floor I could tell it was a
00:16:23
woman I could tell it was Victorian
00:16:26
clothes
00:16:32
I just turned around and ran back up the
00:16:39
stairs
00:16:45
that experience really did frighten me
00:16:50
that actually did make my hair stand on
00:16:52
end I didn't really want to tell anyone
00:16:57
I you know just didn't think they'd
00:16:59
believe it and I didn't want them to
00:17:04
think I was crazy or figment of my
00:17:06
amendment my imagination because I
00:17:08
really did see this happening
00:17:12
Martha's own terrifying experiences were
00:17:15
about to be confirmed in 1994 she
00:17:19
inherited the Borden house and decided
00:17:21
to capitalize on his infamous reputation
00:17:23
by turning it into a very unusual
00:17:26
bed-and-breakfast
00:17:29
using crime-scene photos
00:17:31
Martha replicated the homes exact
00:17:33
condition on the day of the murders when
00:17:38
we first opened I had hired my staff
00:17:40
most of them at the time did not believe
00:17:43
in ghosts or apparitions or anything
00:17:44
like that and then odd things started
00:17:48
happening to them
00:17:50
I arrived at work to stop cleaning the
00:17:56
house and you know making beds I was on
00:18:00
my last room which was the guest room
00:18:04
[Music]
00:18:05
and I had made the bed clean adjusted
00:18:10
and everything and then I turned around
00:18:13
and there was the perfect impression of
00:18:17
somebody laying on the bed they indent
00:18:20
in the pillow in the bed I looked at it
00:18:24
for like a couple of seconds and then I
00:18:26
booked it out of the room I had to leave
00:18:28
I I was just this scared me because I'd
00:18:31
never seen anything like that before in
00:18:32
my life
00:18:33
Carrie was white as a ghost forgive the
00:18:36
pun but she was really pale and I
00:18:39
couldn't get her back in not even to get
00:18:41
her paycheck she would not come in the
00:18:43
house over a century ago in this guest
00:18:47
room Abby Borden received 19 hacks to
00:18:50
her face summer convinced that Abby is
00:18:53
now trying to communicate with the
00:18:55
living Andrew Borden was killed in the
00:19:00
downstairs parlor his half sitting half
00:19:03
lying body slumped across the Victorian
00:19:05
sofa
00:19:09
here employees report seeing a strange
00:19:12
apparition perhaps Andrew vainly trying
00:19:15
to seek human form I was sitting in the
00:19:19
Paulo and on the phone and this strange
00:19:22
feeling came over me a very eerie
00:19:24
feeling hi Sally
00:19:27
it's Eleanor when I looked up to the
00:19:29
kitchen door I saw what I thought was
00:19:33
all this smoke coming out of a kitchen
00:19:36
like a foggy smoke
00:19:44
there's smoke coming out of the kitchen
00:19:47
and I thought to myself well that's
00:19:49
strange there isn't anybody in the
00:19:51
kitchen cooking why would all the smoke
00:19:52
be coming out no no one was there is it
00:19:57
the way it traveled very slow very slow
00:20:01
until it got to the sofa where mr.
00:20:04
Borden was hacked to death and it just
00:20:07
dissipated very slowly it dissipated I'm
00:20:13
freaking this is too weird I was alone
00:20:16
in the house so I know I saw something
00:20:19
that was so out of this world it wasn't
00:20:23
from this world that's for sure what's
00:20:25
going on in the house today
00:20:27
in terms of things that people are
00:20:29
experiencing and seeing and hearing
00:20:31
certainly has a lot to do with the fact
00:20:34
that a violent emotional act went on
00:20:37
here also because it's an unsolved
00:20:40
mysteries means it's definitely here to
00:20:42
stay
00:20:42
also and ghost hunter Catherine Rams
00:20:45
--lens believes that Andrew and Abby
00:20:47
Borden are trying to tell us who killed
00:20:49
them so far unsuccessfully hoping to
00:20:56
document the paranormal activity at the
00:20:58
Borden house Catherine and the house
00:21:00
employee headed to the basement armed
00:21:03
with a voice-activated recorder we went
00:21:05
down there and it's very dark and I just
00:21:10
simply said is anybody here and we could
00:21:15
see that the recorder was activated that
00:21:18
we could hear nothing it was absolute
00:21:20
silence and it was clear something was
00:21:24
being recorded
00:21:26
so I decided instead of asking any more
00:21:28
questions I would just see what we had
00:21:30
gotten we shot up the steps yes we put
00:21:43
sting down there with that whatever it
00:21:44
was a noise from the dead or static
00:21:49
electricity no one knows for sure
00:21:52
Katherine ramzan feels that recording is
00:21:54
a first solid evidence that Abby and
00:21:56
Andrew Borden are ready to share the
00:21:58
chilling circumstances of their bloody
00:22:00
end as for Lizzie following her
00:22:03
acquittal she use her inheritance to buy
00:22:05
a mansion and a fashionable district of
00:22:07
Fall River her final years were spent in
00:22:10
seclusion ostracized by the surrounding
00:22:12
community
00:22:13
she died in 1927 at the age of 67 but
00:22:19
those who work and live at 92 second
00:22:21
Street believe it Lizzie has returned
00:22:23
home they claim that Lizzie Abby and
00:22:27
Andrew still walked these halls and
00:22:29
haunt these rooms chained forever to
00:22:32
this place by the horrific events of
00:22:34
over a century ago and some speculate
00:22:38
that maybe just maybe one of them will
00:22:41
tell us what really happened on August
00:22:43
4th 1892
00:22:46
[Music]
00:23:00
two joggers in Mount Baker National
00:23:03
Forest in Washington State notice a
00:23:05
piece of clothing dangling from a tree
00:23:07
branch honey there's a shirt or
00:23:11
something up there that's weird
00:23:14
see anyone around no someone crashed
00:23:19
down there
00:23:21
a jeep has punched over a steep
00:23:29
embankment inside the car are a passport
00:23:33
money and clothing but there is no sign
00:23:36
of anyone nor any indication that
00:23:38
someone has been injured when you find
00:23:44
there police traced the Jeep to 23 year
00:23:48
old college student Leo Roberts who left
00:23:51
her home in Raleigh North Carolina nine
00:23:53
days earlier without telling anybody
00:23:55
where she was going
00:23:58
I found out that her car had been found
00:24:00
here she is the whole opposite side of
00:24:03
the country haven't heard from her in
00:24:06
nine days and her car shows up with no
00:24:10
sign of Leah so needless to say I was
00:24:14
really really worried
00:24:18
[Music]
00:24:20
the discovery of Lea Roberts Jeep has
00:24:23
only deepened the mystery surrounding
00:24:24
her disappearance there are a few clues
00:24:27
authorities cannot even say for certain
00:24:29
if Lea was in her car when it crashed
00:24:32
only one thing is certain
00:24:34
Lea Roberts embarked on a cross-country
00:24:36
journey of self-discovery her friends
00:24:39
and family are still waiting for her to
00:24:41
come home
00:24:46
Lea is you know just a very awesome
00:24:50
person everybody that meets her likes
00:24:52
are very personable great smile but um
00:24:56
you know she was kind of private also
00:24:58
definitely like very sweet and nice but
00:25:01
it took a while to get to know her when
00:25:04
Lea Roberts was in her early 20s she
00:25:07
experienced a series of tragedies that
00:25:09
would forever influence her outlook on
00:25:11
life first her mother died unexpectedly
00:25:15
then Lea was in a near-fatal car
00:25:18
accident and finally after a long
00:25:21
illness her father passed away I think
00:25:24
that all of those things together had
00:25:26
the cumulative effect of making Lea even
00:25:28
more introspective
00:25:29
and probably more aware that although
00:25:32
she didn't know what she wanted to do I
00:25:35
think she was unhappy that she wasn't
00:25:38
achieving it Lea found solace on the
00:25:41
writings of Jack Kerouac the famous Beat
00:25:44
Generation poet often wrote about the
00:25:47
free-spirited road trips he took during
00:25:49
the 1950's
00:25:51
leah was especially enamored by the
00:25:54
Dharma bums a story that encourages the
00:25:57
reader to leave behind the materialism
00:25:59
of modern life part of that book takes
00:26:04
place at a fire lookout on desolation
00:26:06
peak near Mount Baker in Washington
00:26:09
State from the last conversation that we
00:26:13
had we were talking about Dharma bombs
00:26:15
when Kerouac talks about you know being
00:26:18
alone on desolation peak and and about
00:26:20
how the Kerouac was up on desolation
00:26:22
peak just taking in all the beauty
00:26:24
around him I'd love to go to desolation
00:26:29
peak she was talking about wanting to go
00:26:32
up on desolation Peak and how that she
00:26:35
really wanted to go off by herself and
00:26:36
figure a lot of things out and figure
00:26:38
out what kind of person she wanted to be
00:26:40
because she really didn't know anymore
00:26:43
just three months before she would
00:26:46
graduate from college with a degree in
00:26:47
Spanish
00:26:48
it appears that Lia Roberts secretly
00:26:50
decided to turn her dream into a reality
00:26:53
Lia packed up most of her cherished
00:26:55
belongings and her cat Bea then took off
00:26:58
for desolation Peak 3,000 miles across
00:27:01
the country the way we first heard that
00:27:04
she had left was it had been a period of
00:27:07
like four days where we hadn't seen her
00:27:09
and we began to worry and we called
00:27:13
people family called friends know what I
00:27:17
heard from her
00:27:19
Lia's family and friends filed a
00:27:21
missing-persons report and check bank
00:27:23
records for any activity on her account
00:27:27
Lea had made several cash withdrawals
00:27:30
tracing a route towards the west coast
00:27:32
it took her only three days to make it
00:27:35
to Oregon the day after we filed the
00:27:39
missing-persons report I went over to
00:27:41
Leah's house just to kind of check
00:27:44
through things see if I could find any
00:27:46
clue or whatnot you know just something
00:27:50
to give me an answer amid the clutter on
00:27:59
Leah's dresser Kara discovered a cryptic
00:28:02
note this is to cover bills while I'm
00:28:06
gone remember everyone is together in
00:28:09
thoughts and prayers and time passes
00:28:12
quickly have faith in me yourself
00:28:15
everyone last night said I'm not
00:28:20
suicidal I'm the opposite remember jack
00:28:23
kerouac say that kind of right there is
00:28:28
an allusion to Kerouac and that might be
00:28:31
part of her trip five days later Leah's
00:28:37
Jeep was discovered in Mount Baker
00:28:38
National Forest
00:28:40
100 miles from desolation peak but leah
00:28:43
was nowhere to be found
00:28:46
there were several alarming and
00:28:48
contradictory aspects to the crash scene
00:28:51
authorities estimate that the car was
00:28:53
traveling at 40 miles per hour when it
00:28:55
plunged over the embankment in all
00:28:57
likelihood the driver would have been
00:28:59
seriously injured well with the speed
00:29:04
that the vehicle was traveling and the
00:29:07
amount of damage to the vehicle you
00:29:09
would anticipate some type of injury to
00:29:12
the person inside if there was no injury
00:29:15
to the person inside at least some type
00:29:16
of evidence to indicate contact damage
00:29:19
that the person had been inside the
00:29:21
vehicle but none of those signs were
00:29:24
evident
00:29:25
look at this there was also no blood
00:29:29
inside the Jeepers in the surrounding
00:29:31
area investigators were forced to
00:29:33
consider whether the car was unoccupied
00:29:35
when I went over the hill but that
00:29:38
scenario also turned out to be
00:29:40
problematic there's nothing to indicate
00:29:43
the wheel was tied and that was pushed
00:29:45
off the road and we couldn't find any
00:29:47
marks on the back they indicate anybody
00:29:49
had pushed it to where it was if you had
00:29:53
somebody driving the vehicle and they
00:29:54
jumped out you could have taken your
00:29:56
life into your own hands trying to jump
00:29:58
out of the vehicle at that speed police
00:30:02
now had strong evidence has supported
00:30:04
two opposite conclusions someone had to
00:30:07
be driving the Jeep when it crashed and
00:30:09
no one could have driven over the
00:30:10
embankment without leaving behind signs
00:30:13
of an injury to make matters even more
00:30:16
confusing blanka's had been placed in
00:30:19
the vehicles shattered windows it
00:30:21
appeared that someone had used the car
00:30:23
as a shelter after the accident you guys
00:30:26
seen anything give us a call on the
00:30:27
radio a search of the surrounding area
00:30:30
was immediately undertaken we brought in
00:30:34
dogs who brought in search and rescue
00:30:37
and did a complete grid search up and
00:30:40
down the road and they weren't able to
00:30:42
find any indication that aimed I had
00:30:44
left that vehicle the Jeep was taken to
00:30:49
a police garage and further examined it
00:30:52
was full of Lea's personal belongings a
00:30:54
large amount of cash
00:30:56
an empty cat carrier on a diamond ring
00:30:58
and Lea's mother's diamond engagement
00:31:00
ring as long as I've known Lea she has
00:31:04
worn her mother's engagement ring and it
00:31:06
was her most prized possession and when
00:31:09
we discovered that the ring had been
00:31:10
found in the car it was definitely for
00:31:14
me it was kind of a bad sign
00:31:19
what happened to Lia Roberts was she
00:31:22
even in her Jeep on it crushed if she
00:31:26
was why was there no sign of her being
00:31:28
hurt and finally why would she leave
00:31:32
behind everything that she cared most
00:31:34
about in this world perhaps Lia did
00:31:39
accidentally drive off the road but
00:31:41
survived relatively unscathed
00:31:43
she then would have been stranded in one
00:31:45
of the most remote wilderness regions in
00:31:47
the country Lia may have presented an
00:31:50
irresistible target for a killer you
00:31:54
can't rule out foul play when you don't
00:31:56
see somebody for over a year but there's
00:32:00
no evidence to indicate that that has
00:32:02
happened we did process the vehicle for
00:32:05
you know your typical evidence hairs and
00:32:08
fibers and blood and nothing you know
00:32:11
nothing to indicate that that's happened
00:32:14
[Music]
00:32:17
or maybe the lack of blood at the crash
00:32:19
site indicates that Lee has suffered an
00:32:21
internal injury conceivably a
00:32:24
debilitating head injury could she now
00:32:27
be walking the streets with no memory of
00:32:29
who she is or where she came from there
00:32:34
is a third possibility deadlier roberts
00:32:37
inspired by her favorite author Jack
00:32:39
Kerouac leave her former life behind and
00:32:43
one final dramatic gesture I can
00:32:46
understand Lee is needing to get away
00:32:48
and find some peace within herself but
00:32:53
considering the loss that our families
00:32:56
experienced it's difficult for me to
00:32:59
think that that she would leave us open
00:33:03
for another loss like this it's
00:33:06
difficult to imagine her wanting to
00:33:08
distance herself from her family for as
00:33:10
long as she has but of course you don't
00:33:13
want to imagine the negative things that
00:33:15
could have happened you don't ever know
00:33:18
what someone's thinking in their head no
00:33:20
matter what they tell you you still
00:33:21
don't know not 100% you never know
00:33:24
that's why none of this makes sense to
00:33:27
anybody it's so out of character for her
00:33:30
in some ways and then in some ways it's
00:33:32
not
00:33:39
one week after lia robbers jeep was
00:33:42
found an anonymous tipster called
00:33:44
investigators and reported that his wife
00:33:46
had just seen lee at a gas station 30
00:33:49
miles from seattle Lee appeared confused
00:33:52
and disoriented but before authorities
00:33:54
could obtain further information from
00:33:56
the witness he panicked and hung up the
00:33:58
phone the police are now asking for your
00:34:02
help
00:34:02
[Music]
00:34:06
Lea Roberts is 5 feet 6 weighs 130
00:34:10
pounds and has sandy blond hair she has
00:34:12
a beauty mark on her right upper lip and
00:34:14
a surgical scar on her right hip
00:34:24
rural Kentucky a kind of homespun place
00:34:27
for most folks are downright neighborly
00:34:30
on a quiet Sunday evening in October
00:34:33
Bell County sheriff's deputy Scott elder
00:34:35
was taking a break during a routine
00:34:37
patrol pickup truck suddenly spent by
00:34:40
with both tail lights up deputy elder
00:34:46
had no idea he was behind the wheel or
00:34:48
that all hell was about to break loose
00:34:52
when I came up behind he was driving
00:34:54
fine the only thing that I've directed
00:34:56
my team to was and I'll tell lies I
00:34:59
caught up with it it was a camouflage
00:35:01
truck Kentucky militia on the bag I had
00:35:04
no idea what that was I just didn't know
00:35:07
that's when I made the traffic stop good
00:35:13
evening sir evening I'm deputy elder
00:35:15
with the Bell County Sheriff's Office
00:35:17
hey deputy elder reason I stopped is
00:35:19
your taillights are on that first deputy
00:35:21
elder saw no reason for concern the
00:35:24
drivers seemed friendly enough and he
00:35:26
agreed to take care of the problem right
00:35:28
away and get that fixed thank you for
00:35:31
telling me about that sir but then
00:35:32
everything change
00:35:34
however I do need to see your driver's
00:35:35
license to make sure it's balanced no
00:35:37
you don't need to see my license sir I
00:35:39
do and the reason you don't need to see
00:35:40
this because I'm a member of the
00:35:41
Kentucky state militia he started
00:35:43
getting very agitated started turning
00:35:45
real red he was started yelling that's
00:35:50
when I caught the glimpse of a pistol
00:35:52
magazine to the window I kept screaming
00:36:03
at him step out of the truck step out of
00:36:05
the truck and that's when he threw it in
00:36:07
drive and he took off
00:36:09
I just couldn't believe this was going
00:36:14
on you know it's a Sunday supposed to be
00:36:16
dead shift you know not anymore
00:36:22
careening along Route 25 the two
00:36:24
vehicles were locked in a dangerous
00:36:26
high-speed cat-and-mouse game when the
00:36:29
prey suddenly became the predatory he
00:36:33
turned a u-turn and came back at the
00:36:35
cruiser
00:36:39
when he stops I'm back my crews rub
00:36:44
the swerved missed him and he whipped it
00:36:47
back around
00:36:49
he was chasing me at that point in time
00:36:55
and I was on the radio and I was telling
00:36:57
this budget said he's chasing me and I
00:37:01
don't know what he's trying to do I said
00:37:02
this guy's crazy but he's chasing me it
00:37:06
was a bizarre scene that quickly shifted
00:37:08
from dangerous to deadly with a deputy
00:37:11
now under siege then with bullets flying
00:37:21
in his life on the line
00:37:22
deputy elder turned the tables again
00:37:27
[Music]
00:37:32
moments later he was bearing down on the
00:37:35
truck and the driver suddenly slammed on
00:37:37
his brakes and jumped from the vehicle
00:37:49
according to police a wild shooting
00:37:52
spree ensued the enraged gunman unloaded
00:37:57
more than 30 rounds and peeled off down
00:38:00
the highway
00:38:02
deputy elder fired back but the truck
00:38:05
was a moving target and quickly
00:38:07
disappeared into the night I was shaking
00:38:11
I didn't know whether to cry or scream
00:38:15
get mad you know I didn't know what to
00:38:18
do I just didn't know what to think you
00:38:20
know what the hell happened
00:38:24
deputy Elder was still in shock the next
00:38:26
morning when at least part of the puzzle
00:38:28
fell into place
00:38:31
authorities discovered the gunman's
00:38:33
vehicle abandoned in the backwoods they
00:38:37
identified the owner as 55 year old
00:38:39
Steven Howard Anderson in the back of
00:38:43
Anderson's truck
00:38:44
sheriff's deputies claimed they found
00:38:45
enough weapons and ammo to equip a small
00:38:48
army there were six pipe violently found
00:38:51
in the cab of the vehicle
00:38:52
there was a semi-automatic rifle over
00:38:54
nine thousand rounds of ammunition of
00:38:57
various calibers found in the back of
00:39:00
the vehicle in a camper and the result
00:39:02
their survival gear and clothing and
00:39:04
some food as well given the mindset that
00:39:07
we believe Steven Anderson has when you
00:39:09
see that type of weaponry it poses a
00:39:11
serious threat to property and people
00:39:16
further investigation revealed Steven
00:39:18
Anderson apparently did have ties with
00:39:20
the civilian paramilitary group known as
00:39:22
a Kentucky state militia an organization
00:39:25
not sanctioned by any government body is
00:39:28
stated mission to protect and defend the
00:39:30
US Constitution from all enemies foreign
00:39:32
and domestic
00:39:33
but according to law enforcement
00:39:35
officials some members can be fanatical
00:39:38
and dangerous
00:39:41
even when compared to the group's
00:39:43
extreme element Stephen Anderson was
00:39:46
considered a loose cannon in fact a
00:39:49
short time before the shoot up with
00:39:50
deputy elder Anderson had been booted
00:39:53
out of the militia
00:39:56
stabler dismissal for conduct unbecoming
00:39:58
his agenda would be to do the second
00:40:02
revolution now in our opinion it's not
00:40:06
time legislative process and Kentucky
00:40:09
still works when that system ceased to
00:40:13
function then it's time for a revolution
00:40:19
what Steven Anderson poison launched his
00:40:21
own private war authorities were anxious
00:40:25
to find out after obtaining a search
00:40:29
warrant they uncovered another huge
00:40:31
cache of weapons and explosives on
00:40:33
Anderson's property more pipe bombs
00:40:37
grenades machine guns and approximately
00:40:40
12,000 rounds of ammunition Aegis also
00:40:45
found a low-powered ham radio
00:40:47
transmitter allegedly used by Anderson
00:40:50
to broadcast hate-filled vendetta's
00:40:51
against the establishment in fact just
00:40:58
five days before the shootout with
00:41:00
deputy Anderson acted out an eerily
00:41:03
similar scenario to the actual encounter
00:41:30
- deputy elder Anderson's chilling words
00:41:33
were shocking and scary I had no idea
00:41:37
that he had done that you know there's
00:41:40
no doubt in my mind now that he had at
00:41:42
plan good evening sir
00:41:43
evening any police officer that come in
00:41:45
contact with him that's what was gonna
00:41:47
happen there was gonna be a shootout no
00:41:52
matter what Stephen Anderson is still on
00:41:56
the run and authorities need your help
00:41:58
to bring him to justice it's quite
00:42:01
possible that when Steven Anderson
00:42:03
abandoned his vehicle he may have hid in
00:42:05
the woods for a period of time and
00:42:06
either sought out or received help from
00:42:09
people in the area Stephen Anderson is
00:42:12
wanted by the Kentucky State Police for
00:42:14
the attempted murder of deputy Scott
00:42:15
elder he is also wanted by the ATF the
00:42:20
Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms
00:42:22
for violation of federal Xplosive laws
