May 23, 2019 / 45:14

This episode covers the mysterious case of Don Decker, who experienced unexplained rain phenomena after his grandfather's funeral, the unsolved murder of motorcycle racer Michael Hunter, and the unusual life of a con man known as Tom Hughes.

Don Decker's story begins with his troubled past and the abuse he suffered from his grandfather. After attending the funeral, he stayed with friends Bob and Jeanne Kieffer, where strange occurrences began, including water mysteriously dripping from the walls. Police officers, including John Bogan and Richard Wahlberg, witnessed the bizarre events, which some believed were linked to Don's supposed possession.

Michael Hunter, a motorcycle racer, was shot three times on February 24, 1992, yet his injuries were not immediately visible. The police were baffled by the lack of suspects and motives, leaving his family searching for answers about his tragic death.

The episode also introduces Tom Hughes, a man who lived as a professional hospital patient, checking in and out of various hospitals to obtain pain medication until his untimely death. Investigators uncovered his elaborate fraud scheme that led to his demise.

Irene Love's story reveals her discovery of being adopted and her connection to her childhood friend, Dolores, who turned out to be her sister. The episode highlights the emotional journey of Irene as she seeks to reconnect with her family.

was now obliged publicly to mourn it
00:03:03
abused him physically from the time he
00:03:05
was seven years old no other part of the
00:03:09
family know anything about you know what
00:03:12
happened and it was like you know like
00:03:17
good fighting evil like I basically I
00:03:19
put it you know Deva was gone and I was
00:03:24
hoping you know that everything we
00:03:27
changed in fact things would change and
00:03:33
drastically but not no way Don doctor
00:03:36
could ever have imagined after the
00:03:38
funeral Don was completely unnerved by
00:03:40
the way his perce clarified his
00:03:42
grandfather's memory he decided to spend
00:03:44
the night with his friends Bob and
00:03:46
Jeanne Kieffer whom he had met a few
00:03:48
months earlier
00:03:52
it was at the Kieffer's home that all
00:03:55
the uneasy feelings stirred up at his
00:03:57
grandfather's funeral came back to haunt
00:03:59
nan suddenly the air around him vibrated
00:04:06
with a deep chill
00:04:07
almost simultaneously water began to
00:04:10
drip from the living room walls don fell
00:04:14
into an eerie trance-like state jeannie
00:04:28
have you got water running back there
00:04:31
come take a look at this we've got a
00:04:35
leak
00:04:39
it's all over the wall at a total loss
00:04:44
they decided to notify the landlord Ron
00:04:47
man why get some pots or a bucket or
00:04:50
something
00:04:51
I'm gonna call Ron the phone rang and I
00:04:59
got a call from my tenant Bob and he
00:05:02
said you have to come down we have a
00:05:04
problem and I said well what's the
00:05:07
problem he says well he says I can't
00:05:10
tell you he says just come down he says
00:05:11
but he says you have to come down right
00:05:13
away when one arrived he was just as
00:05:19
puzzled as the Kieffer's about the cause
00:05:21
of the problem look it's on the walls
00:05:23
too sure it we decided that maybe you
00:05:27
know some plumbing but there were no
00:05:29
pipes in the front end of the house to
00:05:31
leak there was basically nothing there
00:05:35
that the water could have come from
00:05:36
because me some condensation like that
00:05:40
after watching it for a while I
00:05:42
discovered that it wasn't only coming
00:05:45
from the ceiling down it could come from
00:05:48
the wall over or from the floor up there
00:05:50
was no you know no basic direction that
00:05:53
it was coming from you know it could
00:05:55
come from anywhere
00:05:58
ron van white telephoned his wife
00:06:01
romaine and police officer john bogan
00:06:04
officer loggia didn't know what to make
00:06:07
of the strange scene inside the kefir
00:06:09
house he brought in his partner
00:06:11
patrolman Richard wool provides on this
00:06:13
man I'm not sure I'm seeing what I'm
00:06:14
saying if you don't tell me what's going
00:06:16
on here John at this point he's telling
00:06:18
me I just want you to walk into the
00:06:20
house and I said well I'm not walking
00:06:21
into the house unless you explain to me
00:06:22
what I'm walking into
00:06:24
he says trust me trust me just walk into
00:06:26
the house I walked in the door and he
00:06:28
came right in behind me and I couldn't
00:06:30
got two steps inside the front door and
00:06:32
I was absolutely pelted we were standing
00:06:41
just inside the front door and there's
00:06:43
Straub little water traveling
00:06:44
horizontally and it just passed right
00:06:46
between us and just travel out into the
00:06:48
next room the rest of the house is dry I
00:06:56
literally had a show going up my spine
00:06:58
they make me like to make the hair stand
00:06:59
up on your neck that's how that's how I
00:07:01
fell this was a situation where things
00:07:03
were happening that I never ever dreamed
00:07:05
could possibly happen and there was no
00:07:07
way of explaining what was going on
00:07:09
we're gonna get you outside we're gonna
00:07:10
take her from there let's just go
00:07:11
outside I'd like to stick around this
00:07:13
point officers Bojan and wahlberg left
00:07:15
to report the incident to the police
00:07:16
chief
00:07:17
all the Kieffer's and Don Decker's who'd
00:07:20
gone hours without food walked across
00:07:22
the street to get something to eat
00:07:23
ron van hawai and his wife remained
00:07:26
behind they left and everything else
00:07:32
left to the rain stopped the house was
00:07:35
normal stopping
00:07:40
we were kind of thinking that maybe it
00:07:44
was coming from them and we weren't sure
00:07:47
at that time which one but we kind of
00:07:51
figured you know because when they left
00:07:53
it left you know so we were sure it was
00:07:57
had something to do with one of them it
00:08:03
had now been 23 hours since the
00:08:05
mysterious rain began Pam's gravano
00:08:08
ruined the restaurant opposite the
00:08:09
Kieffer's house had visited them earlier
00:08:11
that day and seen the rain firsthand
00:08:15
Pam was convinced it was a devil's
00:08:18
handiwork and that the devil was acting
00:08:20
through Don Decker you look inna Donnie
00:08:27
and he was like in a trench you know you
00:08:30
you would look at you but now knowing
00:08:31
that you were there I said to genius
00:08:33
said you know he's got to be possessed
00:08:37
oh my god we sitting there this is a
00:08:43
couple of seconds later and there's
00:08:45
water all over the pizzeria - never seen
00:08:50
anything like that happen in my life so
00:08:52
I went in the cash register I had a crew
00:08:54
surface there I took it out put it on
00:08:57
him and the minute you know put it on
00:09:00
and touch the skin and he got burned
00:09:05
burning an eternal black this boy is
00:09:08
possessed you have to call you have to
00:09:10
go to church you have to have the priest
00:09:11
come and look at him
00:09:12
I'm going back to the house to wait
00:09:14
there's no way that anybody could have
00:09:18
played it you know a joke like that this
00:09:20
was real
00:09:20
Donnie was doing it himself and he was
00:09:24
doing it with that realize in it that he
00:09:26
was doing it
00:09:32
even Don ducktor had begun to believe
00:09:34
that he was somehow responsible the
00:09:38
reign of the restaurant is the final
00:09:40
straw it made me more sure that I was
00:09:44
had something to do with it because it
00:09:45
was following me it didn't start raining
00:09:48
in the house until I got there they were
00:09:50
living there enough never happened and
00:09:52
that's when I started realizing that
00:09:55
that was me it's not a coincidence they
00:09:57
think it's him
00:09:58
I don't buy it back at the Kieffer's
00:10:04
house from a in Van Wyk confronted Don
00:10:07
Decker accusing him of somehow causing
00:10:09
all the trouble on purpose it's your
00:10:11
fault
00:10:12
you made it rain in the living room you
00:10:13
made it your fault you Johnny you're the
00:10:17
one that's doing this you have to make
00:10:21
the pots and pans don't over stove they
00:10:24
started rattling that's when I got
00:10:26
levitated off the floor it was just like
00:10:29
floating then it was like a push but it
00:10:33
wasn't like somebody taking your hand
00:10:35
and pushing you it was like feeling it
00:10:37
all over your body at one and I'm a big
00:10:40
guy you know you know I always have been
00:10:43
assertive and I mean made me felt like a
00:10:46
newborn you know I'm scared right now
00:10:53
just talking about it really
00:10:54
right I believe that there was a I don't
00:10:59
know if you'd call it an evil spirit but
00:11:01
whatever a demon you know possessed his
00:11:03
body and caused this I you know wake me
00:11:09
up in the middle of the night I'm out
00:11:10
here a few hours after the strange
00:11:12
incident in the kitchen offers us Bo Jen
00:11:15
and Walter arrival there chief
00:11:17
a hardened skeptic and toe
00:11:24
when the chief cuts in the house he was
00:11:27
pelted with water just as rich and I was
00:11:29
I got the impression that he was put on
00:11:33
the spot maybe a little bit embarrassed
00:11:35
like we expected something out of him
00:11:37
that he could answer there was no way to
00:11:41
explain what happened and I think he was
00:11:43
put in a position where he might have
00:11:45
felt a little uncomfortable the
00:11:52
Stroudsburg Pennsylvania Chief of Police
00:11:54
would be one of the only eyewitnesses
00:11:56
from that bizarre night who denied that
00:11:58
anything out of the ordinary had
00:12:00
happened
00:12:01
you've got me out of bed for this hey
00:12:03
chief this isn't a police problem this
00:12:05
is a plumbing problem
00:12:06
this is a police problem these people
00:12:08
were helpless these people are having a
00:12:09
joke with you they're having their way
00:12:11
with you look nobody's being heard here
00:12:12
nobody's being threatened so we're out
00:12:15
of here we'll talk about it outside the
00:12:20
police chief coated his officers to
00:12:22
leave the Keefer house he instructed
00:12:25
them not to file a report
00:12:26
in fact he directed them not to speak of
00:12:29
the incident at all I think he just
00:12:32
wanted out he could not give us an
00:12:35
explanation for it he couldn't help us
00:12:37
he can provide us with anything more
00:12:39
than what we know we had experienced and
00:12:41
what we came up with well he just
00:12:44
flat-out denied it it didn't happen and
00:12:46
he tried to convince me that nothing
00:12:48
happened and he wasn't going to do that
00:12:50
I saw it and that's all there is to it
00:12:52
[Music]
00:12:54
the next day acting against the specific
00:12:58
orders of the police chief three of his
00:13:00
veteran officers went to the Keifer home
00:13:02
to try and figure out what was going on
00:13:08
one of the officers was bill Davies this
00:13:12
will just take a second bring your hands
00:13:13
we're standing there and I gave mr.
00:13:15
Duquette this go cross to hold just hold
00:13:18
on to that for the next days it's
00:13:20
burning my hands the birds and there's
00:13:23
no explanation for it and you picked it
00:13:26
up when you grabbed it not hot hot but
00:13:31
it's hot and that's somebody had I held
00:13:34
on to it what's going on here hey guys
00:13:39
all a sudden he's lifted up off the
00:13:42
ground and flew across the room with the
00:13:45
force of though a busted hit'em
00:13:50
Donnie look and there was three claw
00:13:53
marks on the side of his neck
00:13:55
let's do blood I have no answer for
00:13:59
whatsoever and I just draw a blank even
00:14:06
to today having a cop forty years in I
00:14:08
never had anything like this here never
00:14:10
I mean there's always an explanation
00:14:11
when something happens if you got
00:14:13
investigated you come up with something
00:14:14
this is why it happened this case here
00:14:17
there is no explanation finally on the
00:14:23
third night Ron ban who I was able to
00:14:25
convince an evangelical preacher who we
00:14:27
will call Reverend Johnson to come to
00:14:29
the house and attempt an exorcism every
00:14:33
Protestant minister and Catholic priest
00:14:35
and Stroudsburg had turned Ron down the
00:14:39
van wise and the Kieffer's kept vigil by
00:14:41
Reverend Johnson prayed for Don
00:14:46
if she started to pray Donnie went into
00:14:50
like a convulsion you know he he started
00:14:53
to shake he pulled himself up until like
00:14:57
a ball and the longer she prayed he
00:15:04
started to relax then his whole body
00:15:07
seemed to quiet completely down and as
00:15:10
you're standing there watching this you
00:15:12
could feel the house itself seemed to
00:15:14
take on a totally different feeling and
00:15:22
by the time she got done praying the
00:15:26
water was gone and that was the last
00:15:28
that we saw and he water at the house at
00:15:31
all amazingly the rain had stopped Don
00:15:36
Decker appeared to return to his old
00:15:37
self some witnesses believe that
00:15:40
Reverend John Cena performed a miracle
00:15:42
or an exorcism but whatever it was the
00:15:45
results that proved to be only fleeting
00:15:48
[Music]
00:15:51
after his fertile Don Decker returned to
00:15:54
the Monroe County Jail within a few days
00:15:56
the mysterious rain had once again
00:15:59
materialized get me out of here what's
00:16:09
the problem I'm soaking wet
00:16:11
it's no gift rate here great can you get
00:16:14
him out of here they put me in a maximum
00:16:16
security cell that was in there with
00:16:18
another maid and I was thinking you know
00:16:22
I shouldn't make it rain in here and all
00:16:25
sudden water just started coming out of
00:16:27
a concrete floor and at that point I
00:16:32
thought I could do stuff I can control
00:16:43
it this time it was different this time
00:16:46
Don felt powerful he realized he could
00:16:49
manipulate the rain at will you could
00:16:52
control her and I tell you what if you
00:16:54
can control the rain make it rain in the
00:16:57
warden's office make it rain and and
00:16:59
Dave keen holds office
00:17:01
I was sitting at a desk and I was
00:17:04
writing a report I was all by myself in
00:17:07
administration area and nobody else was
00:17:09
around it was approximately 8 o'clock in
00:17:11
the evening
00:17:14
at the time I didn't feel anything my
00:17:17
shirt was drooping down I didn't know
00:17:25
what was going on and the officer told
00:17:27
me to look at my shirt
00:17:29
it's a branded shirt and right here on
00:17:32
about the center of my sternum about 4
00:17:35
inches long 2 inches wide
00:17:36
I was just saturated with water he said
00:17:39
he could make I was startled I'm scared
00:17:43
so was the officer the officer was very
00:17:45
frightened at that particular time and I
00:17:48
just didn't have an explanation of why
00:17:50
it happened all of a sudden I received
00:17:53
this Atlantic call from a sergeant in
00:17:57
jail
00:17:58
his name is Keane hold and he said can
00:18:02
you come over we need you we need your
00:18:04
help Reverend Blackburn
00:18:06
nice to meet you sit down splits Thank
00:18:09
You officer we'll be fine so they
00:18:10
brought this very meek mild-mannered
00:18:13
young man into the room and he was
00:18:16
asking my help
00:18:20
I can make it rain they put a cross
00:18:23
around my neck and it burned rosary in
00:18:26
my hand and it burns on touch thing
00:18:29
would to be a lot simpler if you just
00:18:30
stopped all this nonsense right now
00:18:32
you're making all this up aren't you all
00:18:35
of a sudden like that demeanor changed
00:18:38
and the smell came into the room nurses
00:18:46
and doctors medical people will tell you
00:18:48
that when you walk into a room where
00:18:49
someone is dying with a cancer or
00:18:52
something usually there's a smell you
00:18:54
can tell when you walk in the room and I
00:18:58
smelled a smell like that multiplied
00:19:00
five times at least evil foreboding have
00:19:05
powers you don't I can make it rain and
00:19:08
at that point he raised his hand and he
00:19:11
rubbed his fingers together and all of a
00:19:13
sudden it started to rain
00:19:16
it was like The Devil's rain was a mist
00:19:18
I was in the presence of evil I'm gonna
00:19:22
pray for you I don't want you to pray
00:19:24
for me I don't care whether you want me
00:19:25
to or not
00:19:26
prayer is my prerogative and I opened up
00:19:30
the Bible and started read to him but
00:19:32
the pages never got was from the day so
00:19:35
help me it was a frightening sin and
00:19:36
wickedness was found in you through your
00:19:39
widespread trade you were filled with
00:19:42
violence I think it was brain war from
00:19:45
reason was brilliant I prayed and I said
00:19:47
and it was only a brief period a Naren
00:19:50
stop I bite you in the name of Jesus
00:19:54
Christ he subsided and you could feel a
00:19:57
peace he said thank you
00:20:00
he got tears in his eyes and we hugged
00:20:02
and we prayed together he was possessed
00:20:06
there's no doubt in my mind there is no
00:20:09
way that a human being could do what he
00:20:10
did in that room there's no way that he
00:20:14
did anything but what he did was
00:20:16
spiritual and it wasn't of God
00:20:19
guaranteed it was not of God well it's
00:20:22
over and it hasn't happened again so
00:20:26
basically I'm just hoping that it never
00:20:28
will and I just you know go day by day
00:20:31
and as for my grandfather I think what
00:20:37
had happened was his doing because he
00:20:40
abused me when I was young he got a
00:20:42
chance to abuse me again I think what
00:20:47
makes this case very unique is that all
00:20:49
of the witnesses are so credible we're
00:20:52
dealing with very good well seasoned
00:20:54
police officers that were obviously
00:20:57
rather frightened and shaken by this but
00:20:59
also had the powers of observation chip
00:21:03
Decker no relation to Don and Peter
00:21:05
Jordan are the principal paranormal
00:21:07
researchers on this case they believe
00:21:09
that somewhere there is information as
00:21:11
yet undiscovered which may help them
00:21:13
unravel this mystery The Donald Decker
00:21:16
case the rein boy case is by far this
00:21:19
singularly most fascinating an important
00:21:22
case I have ever
00:21:23
we been involved in that does not mean
00:21:26
that I believe that it necessarily is
00:21:28
proof positive to me of demonic
00:21:31
infestation but is the case in my own
00:21:33
personal experience up to this point
00:21:35
that comes the closest to that
00:21:37
hypothesis
00:21:41
what happened to Don Decker in all nine
00:21:45
eyewitnesses ten recounting Don himself
00:21:47
are willing to go on public record
00:21:50
claiming they saw heard and felt
00:21:52
phenomena
00:21:53
apparently not of this world is it
00:21:57
possible that Don Deckard somehow
00:21:59
memorized by the pain of a childhood
00:22:01
trauma stumbled into another world which
00:22:04
none of us confound or was Don Decker
00:22:07
perhaps trapped in some murky region of
00:22:09
his own psyche his power to do good and
00:22:12
his power to do evil locked in combat
00:22:15
with Don's own body as a battlefield
00:22:17
after all is John Milton wrote in
00:22:20
Paradise Lost the mind is its own place
00:22:22
and in itself can make a heaven of Hell
00:22:25
a hell of heaven
00:22:30
next a champion motorcycle racer is
00:22:33
gunned down at an apparent robbery
00:22:35
turned lethal
00:22:37
[Music]
00:22:46
the shimmering lights of San Francisco
00:22:49
Bay can be seen from more than a dozen
00:22:51
surrounding communities on the evening
00:22:54
of February 24th 1992 one of those
00:22:57
communities became the scene of a tragic
00:22:59
unsolved murder at 8:33 p.m. a man
00:23:06
slowly approached a gas station in
00:23:08
Emeryville across the bay from San
00:23:10
Francisco he was hunched over his
00:23:13
motorcycle weaving in an erratic and
00:23:15
perilous fashion
00:23:22
police and paramedics were dispatched to
00:23:24
the scene and attempted to revive the
00:23:26
stricken right this pulse was feeble and
00:23:34
he was barely alive the absence of any
00:23:37
external injuries left the authorities
00:23:39
mystified
00:23:42
there was no bleeding at all at the site
00:23:45
if it had been a reported motorcycle
00:23:50
accident or some kind of an accident you
00:23:52
would expect to see some kind of blood
00:23:55
but there was absolutely none there no
00:24:03
motorcyclist is rushed to a nearby
00:24:04
hospital it was later discovered that he
00:24:08
had been shot three times by a small
00:24:09
caliber weapon one of the bullets that
00:24:14
shattered his knee a second had lodged
00:24:16
in his abdomen the third and fatal
00:24:19
bullet had punctured his aorta
00:24:22
the wounds were nearly invisible but had
00:24:25
resulted massive internal bleeding the
00:24:28
victim never again consciousness is
00:24:31
pronounced dead shortly after 9:00 p.m.
00:24:33
[Music]
00:24:37
the victim was later identified as
00:24:39
thirty year old Michael hunter an avid
00:24:41
motorcycle racer who had survived
00:24:43
hundreds of dangerous competitions only
00:24:46
to perish on a lonely Bayfront road what
00:24:52
happened to Michael hunter is
00:24:53
unfortunately at all too common
00:24:55
occurrence in today's big cities an
00:24:57
innocent person is murdered the killer
00:24:59
walks away the police are left without a
00:25:01
suspect or a motive even in a highly
00:25:04
competitive field of motorcycle racing
00:25:06
Michael hunter was known as a man with
00:25:08
no enemies he lived for one thing and
00:25:10
one thing only high-speed racing during
00:25:16
the mid-1980s Michael hunter suited up
00:25:19
for competitions throughout California
00:25:21
earning a reputation as one of the
00:25:23
area's top cyclists he said that racing
00:25:28
gave him probably the highest high that
00:25:30
he'd ever had in his whole life he said
00:25:32
if there was nothing that beat this
00:25:33
excitement and the thrill of the racing
00:25:37
and I think the competition was maybe
00:25:39
almost incidental to the the thrill of
00:25:42
the racing he was always sharing always
00:25:47
teaching might took me in hand from the
00:25:50
beginning and taught me how to ride
00:25:51
taught me how to ride safely he taught
00:25:53
me how to ride clean
00:26:04
the evening of February 24th began like
00:26:07
many others for Michael hunter
00:26:11
a 7:45 p.m. he climbed aboard his red
00:26:14
white and blue sport bike apparently
00:26:16
just to go for a run February 24th was a
00:26:21
beautiful evening it was almost like a
00:26:23
summer night crystal clear no breeze it
00:26:30
was just it was very pleasant to be out
00:26:33
in
00:26:35
a few minutes after Michael left home he
00:26:41
stopped off at an ATM half a mile away
00:26:45
as he withdrew $20 miss checking account
00:26:49
a security camera in the ATM recorded
00:26:52
the transaction from the photographs
00:26:56
that we have it would appear to be an
00:26:58
uneventful withdrawal so we don't have
00:27:01
any reason to think that he was robbed
00:27:04
or shot at the ATM machine Michael Nutt
00:27:11
showed up at a liquor store half a block
00:27:13
from the ATM there he purchased the pint
00:27:17
of whiskey which was later found in his
00:27:19
jacket pocket
00:27:22
[Music]
00:27:25
what happened next is pure conjecture
00:27:29
the police believe that Michael may have
00:27:31
headed to a frontage road three miles
00:27:33
from the gas station known first
00:27:35
breathtaking view of the Bay Bridge it
00:27:38
was here while enjoying the fresh winter
00:27:40
breeze that Michael hunter may have
00:27:42
encountered his killer or killers the
00:27:48
police theorized if someone may have
00:27:49
robbed Michael of his wallet at gunpoint
00:27:51
and then demanded his motorcycle a
00:27:54
customized Honda VFR interceptor sport
00:27:57
bike probably Mike's love of his
00:28:02
motorcycle would cause him to be
00:28:05
reluctant to turn it over
00:28:09
Michael apparently tried to outrun the
00:28:11
bullets it was a race he had no chance
00:28:16
of winning I think that he was probably
00:28:21
pretty scared tonight I like to think I
00:28:25
really like to believe that he didn't
00:28:28
know what was going on would have taken
00:28:31
him a long time to get to that station
00:28:33
that's not a short stint to ride when
00:28:38
Michael had very few minutes to live
00:28:41
after he was shot the bullet that
00:28:45
shattered his leg would have caused him
00:28:47
to be in a great deal of pain and it was
00:28:52
his past experience and training that
00:28:55
enabled Michael to make the ride into
00:28:58
the gas station where he knew
00:29:00
there would be some kind of health care
00:29:05
an hour later Michael hunter was dead
00:29:08
leaving his family to wonder who killed
00:29:11
him and why I think all the time he
00:29:15
raced I knew that something could happen
00:29:18
to him because he was living beyond what
00:29:22
most people do as far as is what he
00:29:24
chose to do for his recreation had he
00:29:27
died that way it was a choice he would
00:29:29
made and a conscious choice he'd made
00:29:32
and I think that it would have been a
00:29:34
lot easier to accept
00:29:38
there's just no information coming our
00:29:41
way about a person that was on a red
00:29:45
white and blue motorcycle dressed the
00:29:48
same kind of way obviously very
00:29:51
noticeable I believe that somebody saw
00:29:55
Michael hunter in the last 40 minutes of
00:29:57
his life
00:29:59
and we need those people to come forward
00:30:01
to tell us that little piece of
00:30:03
information that will identify the
00:30:06
killers of Michael hunter
00:30:10
Michael hunters friends and family have
00:30:13
raised a $10,000 reward for information
00:30:15
which may help solve this case
00:30:18
[Music]
00:30:23
but we returned a nationwide search for
00:30:26
the true identity of a hospital hopping
00:30:29
compound just before 9:00 a.m. on
00:30:43
February 11th 1992 the emergency team at
00:30:47
a Danbury Connecticut hospital springs
00:30:49
into action the patient a man registered
00:30:53
as Tom Hughes is in the grip of a severe
00:30:56
cardiac arrest for 90 minutes doctors
00:31:01
and nurses labored to revive him however
00:31:06
all their efforts are in vain at 10:20
00:31:10
the man known as Tom Hughes is
00:31:12
pronounced dead on the hospital
00:31:16
dutifully attempted to contact the man's
00:31:18
wife they discovered that her name and
00:31:20
phone number were bogus so were the
00:31:23
patients social security number address
00:31:25
occupation and employer Tom Hughes
00:31:29
simply did not exist among the man's
00:31:34
possessions were receipt from a hospital
00:31:36
in California and a bus ticket stub from
00:31:38
Pennsylvania to Connecticut starting
00:31:41
with these meager clues authorities soon
00:31:43
uncovered a peculiar fraud scheme until
00:31:46
he died a man known as Tom Hughes had
00:31:48
essentially been a professional hospital
00:31:50
patient it was a scam that may have
00:31:53
killed him
00:31:57
he says happened while you were working
00:31:59
yes I was helping my brother do some
00:32:02
work on a house he's buying over in
00:32:04
Ridgefield the con man would stay in a
00:32:06
hospital for three to seven days before
00:32:09
sneaking out and leaving his bills
00:32:11
unpaid wait and the next thing I know it
00:32:15
appears that Tom would check into a
00:32:17
hospital with some sort of small
00:32:18
self-inflicted wound and have a
00:32:20
complaint of the lower back pain we
00:32:23
think that he was checking himself into
00:32:24
the hospitals to obtain the pain pills
00:32:26
okay well my first try something a bit
00:32:28
stronger and I'd like to suggest that
00:32:30
you check herself in for observation for
00:32:32
a few days and objection well whatever
00:32:35
you say sure the doctor we were able to
00:32:39
determine that Tom had essentially been
00:32:40
travelling across the country and
00:32:43
staying in one hospital after another
00:32:45
I'm taking a bus from one destination to
00:32:48
another we were able to track him from
00:32:50
California all the way to Rhode Island
00:32:52
and points in between yes my name is
00:32:56
Thomas Hughes I need to speak with
00:32:58
someone about a personal injury case the
00:33:02
con man had made sixteen calls before he
00:33:04
died on a civil engineer yeah
00:33:08
investigators trace them hoping to
00:33:10
locate friends or family members instead
00:33:13
they uncovered yet another facet of his
00:33:15
unusual scheme every single call had
00:33:19
been made to an attorney in fact we
00:33:21
think he called the attorney's number
00:33:23
the story that he wanted to have a
00:33:25
lawsuit because of his injuries at work
00:33:28
but I think the real reason he called
00:33:30
the attorneys was to again tell his
00:33:32
story to someone and borrow some money
00:33:35
he needed travel money and he would
00:33:38
obtain this by borrowing small amounts
00:33:39
in the attorneys oh listen I I hate to
00:33:41
ask you this would you do me a favor
00:33:44
sure well I'm expecting a package for my
00:33:49
wife today it's come on see Odie
00:33:51
could I borrow $40 until tomorrow yeah I
00:33:55
guess I could do that I'll just add it
00:33:57
to my bill okay $40
00:34:00
we know that Tom had been traveling from
00:34:02
hospital hospital for a year two years
00:34:04
or possibly longer
00:34:05
and each time taking excessive amounts
00:34:08
of painkillers and we believe that there
00:34:12
could be a contributing cause of his
00:34:14
death
00:34:15
this photograph of the unidentified man
00:34:18
was taken just hours before his death he
00:34:20
weighed 277 pounds although authorities
00:34:24
caution that he may have put on much of
00:34:26
the weight since he began living in
00:34:28
hospital beds
00:34:31
[Music]
00:34:52
next a woman needs your help to fight a
00:34:55
childhood friend it turned out to be
00:34:57
much more than just a friend most of us
00:35:09
have read Alice in Wonderland pondered
00:35:11
what it might feel like to fall through
00:35:12
the looking glass into a place where
00:35:14
nothing was quite as it seemed for a Los
00:35:17
Angeles woman named Irene love Looking
00:35:20
Glass was an old strongbox harboring her
00:35:22
mother Minnie's private papers once
00:35:24
Irene opened it her parents and her best
00:35:27
friend turned out not to be at all what
00:35:30
they seemed 1962 mid-city Los Angeles 16
00:35:42
year old Irene love was killing a
00:35:44
Saturday afternoon in her mother's bed
00:35:46
new I used to play music a lot my
00:35:50
records I would sometimes even go to my
00:35:52
mother's drawers and just be nosey have
00:35:55
always been nosy I looked around and
00:35:57
there was some metal box I opened it up
00:36:00
and there were some papers there were
00:36:02
they in 1942 and I thought God mom keeps
00:36:05
this then there was another piece of
00:36:09
paper folded up and it was a birth
00:36:11
certificate and it had Irene went on it
00:36:15
and I go huh same first name was mine I
00:36:20
notice the father's name was Glenn
00:36:22
mother's name was Ramona County General
00:36:26
Hospital the date I said well the date
00:36:29
that was what caught me the date was the
00:36:31
same date as my birth and by that time a
00:36:35
little bit later on my mother came home
00:36:42
what's that and I showed her the paper
00:36:47
[Applause]
00:36:49
where'd you find this over there what
00:36:53
are you doing snooping through my things
00:36:54
you know those are private papers
00:36:57
are you my real mother Irene I love you
00:37:04
so much and it came to life that I was
00:37:07
adopted and she and my dad had adopted
00:37:10
me three days after I was born and she
00:37:14
was fearful that I was going to at that
00:37:16
point leave and go in search for my real
00:37:20
parents and I told her no I wasn't I
00:37:23
just wanted to know what was a story
00:37:25
about it many and Forrest Lovett brought
00:37:31
Irene home on June 3rd 1946 they could
00:37:42
not have children of their own Shalini
00:37:44
and Forrest are especially thrilled with
00:37:46
her new daughter look at that big they
00:37:50
provided her with everything even a best
00:37:52
friend Dolores for just one year older
00:37:56
than Irene was the only child of Minnie
00:37:58
and Forrest best friends
00:38:02
they would bring her over every day or
00:38:05
every weekend we went on camping trips
00:38:09
we went to the park we went everywhere
00:38:13
to the lakes we never really argued it
00:38:17
was like we we knew each other we
00:38:19
connected
00:38:20
if one one is something the other one
00:38:22
knew about it and it was always there we
00:38:26
were just connected so close that there
00:38:30
was like a great friendship there every
00:38:35
holiday they would come over and bring
00:38:37
the gifts and we exchanged guests there
00:38:39
in the living room it was basically we
00:38:44
got the same toys so they didn't deny us
00:38:46
anything they made sure that we were
00:38:49
happy kids
00:38:52
I don't think of challenges was had a
00:38:55
better childhood than I have because I
00:38:57
had my my mom my dad I had billion Ford
00:39:01
they were just like my mother and father
00:39:02
I had Dolores who just had a we just had
00:39:06
a fun time they occupied every minute of
00:39:10
our lives when we were children together
00:39:12
and that was fun times is there anything
00:39:16
else she should tell me well honey day
00:39:21
in 1962 Minnie asked diary to think back
00:39:24
to our happy childhood
00:39:25
she asked you to recall a restaurant
00:39:28
Clifton's were minion forest had taken
00:39:30
Irene every Sunday
00:39:32
now many explained why they have always
00:39:35
gone to the same place Irene's birth
00:39:40
mother Ramona who is Hispanic worked at
00:39:43
the cafeteria this was her only
00:39:46
opportunity to watch Irene grow
00:39:50
don't
00:39:54
[Music]
00:39:56
at some point I release birth father
00:39:59
Glenn began to work at Clifton's -
00:40:05
minion Forrest would alternate their
00:40:07
seating locations in the restroom
00:40:09
so both Glenn and Ramona could see the
00:40:11
daughter they had been to
00:40:13
poverty-stricken to raise them settled
00:40:15
was never his play I never faulted them
00:40:22
for what they did they had to do what
00:40:25
they had to do and I'm thankful that
00:40:27
they gave me to a family and to the
00:40:29
family that they did give me too
00:40:30
so that's you know I was lucky in that
00:40:33
way Irene and Delores and their parents
00:40:37
lived happily until 1956 then Delores
00:40:41
his mother Billy died of a kidney
00:40:43
disease suddenly Delores seemed to
00:40:45
vanish into thin air Irene never saw her
00:40:49
again only years later but Irene's
00:40:53
mother finally told her the truth
00:40:55
did Irene learn what had happened to her
00:40:57
friend shortly after Delores mother died
00:41:03
her father came to the sad conclusion he
00:41:06
could no longer raise her alone
00:41:07
that she needed her mother he took
00:41:14
Delores to live with Glenn and Ramona
00:41:16
the couple who worked at Clifton's
00:41:18
cafeteria I'll take but why
00:41:21
finally the shocking news came out
00:41:24
Delores was also the child of Glenn and
00:41:27
Ramona wind Delores and Irene were
00:41:30
sisters
00:41:33
honey Irene was thunderstruck her mother
00:41:36
explained apologetically that she had
00:41:38
been afraid to let Irene continues
00:41:40
seeing Dolores after Dolores moved in
00:41:42
with Ramona and Glenn I was afraid if I
00:41:45
told you the truth then I would lose you
00:41:48
no matter what you'll always be my
00:41:52
mother
00:41:53
[Music]
00:41:57
in 1989 after both of her parents passed
00:42:01
away Irene found herself irresistible
00:42:03
drawn back to the old neighborhood
00:42:05
reliving her happy childhood with
00:42:08
Dolores in my mind I can see us playing
00:42:14
together we were like twins you know but
00:42:28
not knowing that we were sisters you
00:42:31
know that's so that's what I want real
00:42:32
bad to meet with her she's a part of my
00:42:36
early life she's a part of me I feel
00:42:40
things that I don't think anybody else
00:42:42
could feel right now because it's like
00:42:44
the emptiness that's going on inside of
00:42:46
me due to the fact I don't know where
00:42:48
she's at and I hope one day soon that we
00:42:52
can't come together and be the silly
00:42:54
little girls that we were when we were
00:42:56
growing up cuz I'm still silly little
00:42:59
girl
00:42:59
in heart and I want it I'm gonna be with
00:43:01
her as soon as possible
00:43:04
Eirene also has a message for her birth
00:43:06
parents Glenn and Ramona Wynn who
00:43:08
watched so lovingly from a distance
00:43:10

00:43:15
to get to know you also and bring you
00:43:17
