This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers unusual cases including the mysterious rain phenomenon associated with Don Decker, the murder of Deputy O'Neal Moore, and a family seeking their rescuers.

In Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Don Decker experiences inexplicable rain indoors after attending his grandfather's funeral. Friends and police witness water dripping from walls without any plumbing issues, leading some to believe he is possessed. An exorcism is attempted, but the rain returns when Decker is jailed.

00:02:00
the funeral knows that he has a dark
00:02:03
secret his grandfather the man he now
00:02:06
pretends to mourn physically abused them
00:02:08
from the time he was just 7 years old no
00:02:12
other part of the family knew anything
00:02:15
about what happened it was like uh you
00:02:18
know like good fighting evil I I
00:02:20
basically I put it you know um the evil
00:02:23
was gone and uh I was hoping you know
00:02:28
that everything would change
00:02:32
well things did change but not in a way
00:02:35
that Don Decker could ever have imagined
00:02:37
after the funeral he decided to spend
00:02:40
the night with his friends Bob and
00:02:42
Janine kefir and that's when The
00:02:45
Unexplained began to
00:02:47
happen it was at the keir's home that
00:02:50
all those uneasy feelings stirred up at
00:02:52
the funeral came back to haunt Don
00:02:56
suddenly he felt a deep chill at almost
00:02:59
the the same time water began to drip
00:03:02
from the living room walls Don fell into
00:03:05
a strange trans-like
00:03:08
State Genie come take a look at
00:03:12
this we've got a leap they decided to
00:03:15
notify the landlord Ron Van white r
00:03:19
getting the rug all wet get some pots or
00:03:21
a bucket or something I'm going to call
00:03:24
Ron the phone rang and I got a call from
00:03:27
my tenant Bob and he said you have to
00:03:30
come down we have a problem he says just
00:03:32
come down he says but he says you have
00:03:33
to come down right
00:03:35
away hey Bob what's up thanks we got a
00:03:38
leak ge when Ron arrived he was just as
00:03:41
puzzled by the problems as the kefir and
00:03:44
look it's on the walls too sure is we
00:03:47
decided that maybe it was some Plumbing
00:03:49
but there were no pipes in the front end
00:03:51
of the house to leak there was basically
00:03:54
nothing there that the water could have
00:03:56
come from it could be some condensation
00:03:59
or
00:04:01
after watching it for a while I
00:04:04
discovered that it wasn't only coming
00:04:06
from the ceiling down it could come from
00:04:09
the wall over or from the floor up there
00:04:12
was no you know no basic direction that
00:04:15
it was coming from you know it could
00:04:16
come from
00:04:18
anywhere Ron telephoned his wife and the
00:04:21
police officer bojan didn't know what to
00:04:24
make of the strange scene so he brought
00:04:26
in his partner patrolman Richard Walbert
00:04:29
on this man I'm not sure I'm seeing what
00:04:31
I'm seeing if you don't tell me what's
00:04:32
going on I'm not going to go in there
00:04:34
John at this point he was telling me I
00:04:36
just want you to walk into the house and
00:04:37
I said I'm not walking into the house
00:04:38
unless you explain to me what I'm
00:04:40
walking into he says trust me trust me
00:04:42
just walk into the house I walked in the
00:04:44
door and he came right in behind me and
00:04:46
I couldn't have got two steps inside the
00:04:48
front door and I was absolutely
00:04:50
pelted now you see what I'm talking
00:04:52
about what is this water yeah it's
00:04:54
coming from everywhere you have a broken
00:04:56
pipe there are no pipes we were standing
00:04:57
just inside the front door and then
00:04:59
there's Dro a little water traveling
00:05:01
horizontally and then it just passed
00:05:03
right between us and just traveled out
00:05:04
into the next room that happens all the
00:05:06
time unbelievable and this is only
00:05:08
happening in this room the rest of the
00:05:10
house is dry come look in the dining
00:05:11
room it's not happening there I
00:05:13
literally had a chill going up my spine
00:05:15
it made me like make the hair stand up
00:05:16
on your neck that's how uh that's how I
00:05:18
felt this was a situation where things
00:05:20
were happening that I never ever dreamed
00:05:22
could possibly happen and there was no
00:05:24
way of explaining what was going on
00:05:26
we're going to get you outside and we're
00:05:27
going to take it from there at this
00:05:28
point the officers left to report the
00:05:30
incident to the police chief the Keers
00:05:32
and Don walked across the street for
00:05:34
something to eat Ron and his wife
00:05:37
remained at the
00:05:39
house they
00:05:41
left and everything else left too the
00:05:44
rain stopped the house was normal Ron
00:05:47
look it's
00:05:50
stopping we were kind of thinking that
00:05:54
maybe it was coming from them and we
00:05:57
weren't sure at that time which one
00:06:00
but uh we we kind of figured you know
00:06:03
because when they left it left you know
00:06:06
so we we were sure it was had something
00:06:09
to do with one of them it had now been
00:06:12
23 hours since the mysterious rain began
00:06:16
Pam scrafano owned the restaurant across
00:06:18
from the keir's house she had visited
00:06:20
them earlier that day and seen the rain
00:06:23
firsts hand worse than this morning yes
00:06:26
worse Pam was convinced that Don Decker
00:06:29
was possessed by an evil spirit no no no
00:06:32
no you should probably call the church
00:06:34
have the priest come over and take a
00:06:36
look at you look know Donnie and he was
00:06:38
like in a trend you know he he would
00:06:40
look at you but not knowing that you
00:06:41
were there I said to genius said you
00:06:43
know he's got to be possessed oh my
00:06:47
God oh my God oh my God we sitting there
00:06:52
a couple seconds later there's water all
00:06:55
over the pizzeria too do you have do you
00:06:56
have a crucifix hey do you have a
00:06:58
crucifix I've never anything like that
00:07:00
happened in my life so I went in the
00:07:02
cash register I had a crucifix there I
00:07:05
took it out put it on him and the minute
00:07:08
you know I put it on him touched the
00:07:10
skin and he got burned it burned just
00:07:14
cross burned him and it turned black
00:07:17
this boy is possessed you have to call
00:07:19
you have to call the church you have to
00:07:20
have the pr there's no way that anybody
00:07:23
could have played you know a joke like
00:07:25
that this was real Donnie was doing it
00:07:28
himself
00:07:30
and he was doing it without realizing it
00:07:32
that he was doing it take him to the
00:07:34
church and have the Poli look at him
00:07:35
that's what you should do even Don
00:07:37
Decker began to believe that he was
00:07:39
somehow responsible the rain in the
00:07:42
restaurant was the last STW that made me
00:07:45
more sure that I always had something to
00:07:47
do with it cuz it was following me and
00:07:49
it didn't start raining in the house
00:07:51
until I got there they were living there
00:07:53
nothing ever happened and that's when I
00:07:56
started realizing that that was me it's
00:07:58
not a coin
00:08:00
they think it's him I don't buy it this
00:08:03
is horrible I'm sick of being in back at
00:08:06
the keir's house the landlord's wife
00:08:08
confronted Don accusing him of somehow
00:08:11
causing all the trouble this is your
00:08:14
fault you made it rain in the living
00:08:15
room you made it rain at P's place this
00:08:17
is all your fault it's you joh and
00:08:19
you're the one that's doing this and you
00:08:21
have to make a stop the pots and pans
00:08:24
that were over the stove they started
00:08:27
rattling it's when I got Le hated off
00:08:29
the floor
00:08:34
dny it wasn't like somebody taking your
00:08:36
hand and pushing you it was like feeling
00:08:38
it all over your body at one and I'm a
00:08:41
big guy you know you know I always have
00:08:44
been assertive and that made made me
00:08:47
felt like a newborn you know um
00:08:52
uh I I'm I'm scared right now just
00:08:55
talking about it really I believe that
00:08:57
there was a a I don't know if You' call
00:09:00
it an evil spirit but whatever a demon
00:09:02
you know possessed his body and uh
00:09:05
caused
00:09:07
this well this better be good gentlemen
00:09:09
you wake me up in the middle of the
00:09:11
night I'm out here a few hours after the
00:09:13
strange incident in the kitchen officers
00:09:16
bojan and Walbert arrived with their
00:09:18
Chief when the chief got to the house he
00:09:21
was pel weather just as Rich than I was
00:09:24
it's getting worse I got the impression
00:09:27
that he was put on the spot maybe a
00:09:29
little embarrassed like we expected
00:09:31
something out of him that he could
00:09:32
answer this looks like a problem with
00:09:34
your pipes there was no way to explain
00:09:37
what happened and I think he was put in
00:09:38
a position where he might have felt a
00:09:39
little uncomfortable you got me out of
00:09:42
bed for this hey chief this isn't a
00:09:44
police problem this is a plumbing
00:09:46
problem this is a police the police
00:09:47
chief ordered his officers to leave the
00:09:49
kefir house he told them not to file a
00:09:52
report and not to even talk about the
00:09:54
incident well he just flat out tonight
00:09:57
it didn't happen and he tried to
00:09:59
convince me that nothing happened and he
00:10:02
wasn't going to do that I saw it and
00:10:04
that's all there is to
00:10:08
it next the demon gets physical and an
00:10:12
exorcist is called in to help prayer is
00:10:21
byoga the mysterious rain inside the
00:10:24
keir's home continued but the chief of
00:10:27
police denied that anything out of the
00:10:30
ordinary was
00:10:33
happening the next day three officers
00:10:36
ignored the orders of their police chief
00:10:39
they went to the kefir home to continue
00:10:41
their
00:10:42
investigation Lo one of those officers
00:10:46
was Bill Davies this will just take a
00:10:48
second bring your hands behind your back
00:10:50
we're standing there and I gave Mr
00:10:51
Decker this gold cross the hold just
00:10:54
hold on to that the next thing is it's
00:10:55
burning my hands Burns and there's no
00:10:58
explanation for
00:11:00
it when you picked it up when you
00:11:02
grabbed
00:11:04
it not hot hot but it's
00:11:07
hot and that's when I and I held on to
00:11:10
it hey what's going on here hey guys
00:11:14
started rain here all of a sudden he
00:11:16
lifted up off the ground and he flew
00:11:20
across the room with the force of though
00:11:22
a busted hit
00:11:25
him oh my God Donnie I mean look and uh
00:11:28
there was three marks on the side of his
00:11:30
neck drew blood my God look at his neck
00:11:32
come
00:11:33
on I have no answer for it
00:11:36
whatsoever
00:11:39
and I just draw a blank even to today
00:11:43
having a cop 40 years and I never had
00:11:44
anything like this here never I mean
00:11:46
there's always an explanation when
00:11:47
something happens if you got
00:11:48
investigated you come up with something
00:11:50
this is why it happened this case here
00:11:53
there is no
00:11:54
explanation there's an evil Upon This
00:11:57
House fin finally on the third night Ron
00:12:01
Van W asked the preacher to come to his
00:12:03
house and try an
00:12:05
exorcism we all must kneel and pray
00:12:09
every Protestant Minister and Catholic
00:12:12
priest in Stroudsburg had turned around
00:12:16
down who want in heaven as she started
00:12:19
to pray Donnie went into a convulsion
00:12:22
you know he he started to shake uh he
00:12:26
pulled himself up into like a ball
00:12:29
and uh the longer she prayed he started
00:12:34
to relax then his whole body seemed to
00:12:38
quiet completely down and as you're
00:12:41
standing there watching this you could
00:12:43
feel the house itself seem to take on a
00:12:45
total different feeling trespass against
00:12:48
us lead us not into temptation and by
00:12:52
the time she got done praying the water
00:12:55
was gone and that was the last that we
00:12:57
saw any water at the house at
00:13:00
all the mysterious rain was gone and Don
00:13:04
Decker appeared to return to his old
00:13:06
self but the change was only
00:13:09
temporary after his Furlow Don returned
00:13:12
to jail within a few days the mysterious
00:13:16
rain
00:13:20
returned gu gu get me out of
00:13:25
here what's the problem here look at me
00:13:27
I'm soaking wet it's it's all wet now
00:13:29
get me out of here great can you get
00:13:31
them out of here they put me in a
00:13:33
maximum security cell and I was in there
00:13:35
with another inmate and uh I was
00:13:38
thinking you know I wish should make it
00:13:41
rain in here and all of a sudden water
00:13:43
just started coming out of a concrete
00:13:45
floor and uh at that point
00:13:49
um I thought I could do
00:13:52
stuff what are you doing you throwing
00:13:55
water on the cell walls from the sink or
00:13:57
from the toilet or something huh
00:13:59
I can control it according to Don he now
00:14:02
realized that he could control the rain
00:14:06
sometimes I can't at well you can
00:14:08
control you can control the rain I tell
00:14:10
you what if you can control the rain
00:14:13
Make it rain in the warden's office Make
00:14:15
It Rain and and and Dave Keen hold's
00:14:18
office I was sitting at the desk and I
00:14:21
was writing a report I was all by myself
00:14:24
in administration area nobody else was
00:14:26
around it was approximately 8:00 in the
00:14:31
evening at the time I didn't feel
00:14:33
anything my shirt was drooping
00:14:37
down yeah come in excuse me Warden I was
00:14:41
just down talking to I didn't know what
00:14:42
was going on and the officer told me to
00:14:45
look at my shirt what a brand new shirt
00:14:48
and right here on about the center of my
00:14:50
sternum about 4 in Long 2 in wide I was
00:14:54
just saturated with water he said he can
00:14:57
make it I was startled
00:14:59
I was scared so was the officer the
00:15:01
officer was very frightened at that
00:15:03
particular
00:15:04
time and I just didn't have an
00:15:07
explanation of why it happened all of a
00:15:09
sudden I I received this uh frantic call
00:15:13
from a sergeant in the jail his name is
00:15:17
Keen hold and he said uh can you come
00:15:19
over we need you we need your help
00:15:22
Reverend Blackburn nice to meet you sit
00:15:24
down please thank you officer we'll be
00:15:27
fine so they brought this very Meek mild
00:15:31
mannered young man into the room and he
00:15:33
was asking my help now what is it here
00:15:36
what's going
00:15:37
on I Can Make It Rain they put a cross
00:15:41
around my neck and it burned Rosary in
00:15:43
my hand and it burned son don't you
00:15:46
think it would be a lot simpler if you
00:15:47
just stopped all this nonsense right now
00:15:50
you're making all this up aren't you all
00:15:53
of a sudden like that demeanor changed
00:15:57
and the smell came into the room
00:16:02
uh nurses and Doctors Medical people
00:16:04
will tell you that when you walk into a
00:16:06
room where someone is dying with a
00:16:08
cancer or something usually there's a
00:16:11
smell you can tell when you walk in the
00:16:14
room and I smelled a smell like that
00:16:17
multiplied five times at least evil for
00:16:23
booding I have powers you don't I can
00:16:26
make it rain and at that point he he
00:16:29
raised his hand and he rubbed his
00:16:30
fingers together and all of a sudden it
00:16:32
started to
00:16:34
rain it was like the devil's rain it was
00:16:36
a
00:16:37
missed I was in the presence of evil I'm
00:16:40
going to pray for you I don't want you
00:16:42
to pray for me I don't care whether you
00:16:44
want me to or not prayer is My
00:16:47
Prerogative and I opened up the Bible
00:16:50
and started read to him but the pages
00:16:52
never got wet so help me it was a
00:16:54
frightening thing your wickedness was
00:16:56
found in you through your widespread
00:16:59
trade you were filled with violence I
00:17:02
think it was praying more for me than it
00:17:04
was for him I prayed and I and it was
00:17:07
only a brief period and the rain stopped
00:17:10
I bind you in the name of Jesus Christ
00:17:14
he subsided and you could feel a peace
00:17:18
he said thank you he got tears in his
00:17:20
eyes and we hugged and we prayed
00:17:22
together it's going to be all right he
00:17:24
was possessed there's no doubt in my
00:17:26
mind there is no way that a human being
00:17:29
could do what he did in that room
00:17:31
there's no way that he did anything but
00:17:34
what he did was
00:17:36
spiritual and it wasn't of God
00:17:38
guaranteed it was not of God well it's
00:17:41
over and it hasn't happened again so um
00:17:45
basically I'm just hoping that it never
00:17:47
will and uh I just you know go day by
00:17:50
day and uh as for my grandfather um I
00:17:54
think what had happened was his doing
00:17:59
because he abused me when I was young he
00:18:01
got a chance to abuse me
00:18:03
again chip Decker no relation to Dan and
00:18:07
Peter Jordan are the main paranormal
00:18:09
researchers on this case I think what
00:18:13
makes this case very unique is that all
00:18:15
of the Witnesses are so credible we're
00:18:17
dealing with very good well seasoned
00:18:20
police officers that were obviously
00:18:22
rather frightened and shaken by this but
00:18:25
also had the powers of observation the
00:18:28
Donald ER case the rain boy case is by
00:18:30
far the singularly Most Fascinating and
00:18:34
important case I have ever personally
00:18:35
been involved in that does not mean that
00:18:39
I believe that it necessarily is proof
00:18:41
positive to me of demonic infestation
00:18:44
but is the case in my own personal
00:18:46
experience up to this point that comes
00:18:47
the closest to that
00:18:50
hypothesis it burs just leave it out no
00:18:52
no no just in all nine eyewitnesses plus
00:18:55
Don himself were willing to go on record
00:18:57
saying that they saw heard and felt
00:19:01
phenomena apparently not of this world
00:19:04
and they continue to believe Don was
00:19:07
possessed by the devil they have found
00:19:10
no other explanation for these bizarre
00:19:17
events next a deputy sheriff is murdered
00:19:21
because of the color of his skin maybe
00:19:24
you can help bring his Killers to
00:19:27
Justice

00:19:41
in the early 1960s the American South
00:19:44
was at a
00:19:47
Crossroads with segregation starting to
00:19:50
crumble blacks and whites faced off
00:19:52
intense often violent
00:19:57
confrontations in Washington Parish
00:19:59
Louisiana the black community began to
00:20:02
push for integration of the sheriff's
00:20:08
department in 1964 David Creed Rogers
00:20:12
and O'Neal Moore became the first black
00:20:15
law enforcement officers in Washington
00:20:18
Parish it was just a great day knowing
00:20:21
my husband was the first negro Deputy he
00:20:23
got in his car and he turned his um
00:20:27
radio on and reported in and we just
00:20:32
tickle at that time feelings were
00:20:35
running very high very high and people
00:20:41
some people not all people was against
00:20:45
the blacks taking a part in any part of
00:20:48
law enforcement or
00:20:50
anything O'Neal Moore and Creed Rogers
00:20:53
were working in a white world that
00:20:55
barely tolerated their presence
00:20:57
nevertheless they persevered but it was
00:21:00
a very very dangerous situation and it
00:21:03
all caught up with them One Summer Night
00:21:05
in
00:21:18
1965 after a year on duty O'Neal and
00:21:21
Creed were used to harassment so they
00:21:24
weren't surprised when a pickup truck
00:21:26
began to tailgate them
00:21:31
it appeared to be a dark truck black I
00:21:34
noticed it had a white Grill and a rebel
00:21:36
t on the
00:21:39
front so as we headed south it continued
00:21:43
to followed
00:21:57
us
00:22:00
when the car hit the tree and they pass
00:22:03
still shooting and evidently the last
00:22:06
shot got him knocked him over on me you
00:22:09
guys all right hearing the shots a
00:22:12
neighbor ran to the accident scene don't
00:22:14
worry my wife called the police they're
00:22:16
on the way all right the neighbors stood
00:22:18
guard until Deputy Doyle holiday arrived
00:22:20
a few minutes
00:22:27
later going to be all right when I got
00:22:30
up there I found deuty O'Neal Moore dead
00:22:34
and uh deuty Creed Rogers all shot
00:22:38
up a black truck CED he described the
00:22:41
truck you recognize it right down to the
00:22:44
Last Detail you're going to be okay it's
00:22:46
all right and I immediately put out an
00:22:48
APB on that
00:22:50
truck in less than
00:22:52
about 30 or 45
00:22:56
minutes uh they called me from my office
00:22:59
and told me that they had apprehended a
00:23:01
truck of that description in Tyler Town
00:23:06
Mississippi the truck fit the
00:23:08
description to a t of what Creed had
00:23:11
told me with the exceptions of the side
00:23:14
rails there were no side rails on the
00:23:17
truck at the time of apprehension the
00:23:19
truck was stopped just 20 mi from the
00:23:21
scene of the shooting the driver was
00:23:24
arrested but was released only on a
00:23:27
$25,000 B
00:23:29
the charges were later dismissed due to
00:23:32
lack of
00:23:33
evidence suspicion soon focused on the
00:23:36
Klux Clan but the local chapter
00:23:39
immediately denied any involvement
00:23:42
racial tensions increased but the
00:23:44
sheriff refused to give in to the
00:23:46
pressure O'Neal Moore was replaced by
00:23:50
another black Deputy it really didn't
00:23:52
accomplish anything because when they
00:23:56
trying to get rid of creed and O'Neal
00:23:59
it didn't frighten them that just give
00:24:01
others
00:24:02
more more get up and go about them it it
00:24:05
really it really give them more courage
00:24:08
they wern't going to get the black
00:24:09
deputies off of the sheriff's department
00:24:12
because it was it wasn't anytime after
00:24:15
that until the sheriff called me one day
00:24:17
and told me to go and hire another one
00:24:21
well we can't get on it for first thing
00:24:22
in the morning Doyle holiday continued
00:24:25
his investigation and then 2 weeks after
00:24:28
the shooting he became a victim of
00:24:31
violence after I got through talking to
00:24:33
the sheriff I went over and sat down on
00:24:35
the couch that's when the shot rang
00:24:38
out and I hollered get down and I
00:24:41
grabbed my gun it was laying on the
00:24:42
table and went out the door
00:24:47
fire and they immediately took
00:24:51
off he might have been stepping on
00:24:53
somebody's toes I don't know but I don't
00:24:57
know why they picked me out single me
00:25:00
out because even had they backed me down
00:25:03
which they didn't they still had the FBI
00:25:06
and the state police to contend with the
00:25:08
governor of Louisiana offered a $25,000
00:25:12
reward still local residents refused to
00:25:15
cooperate with the FBI or the sheriff
00:25:19
the case was declared inactive in
00:25:23
1967 years ago the clan was so
00:25:27
strong that the people would not open
00:25:30
their mouth they would not give you a
00:25:32
lead on anything for fear of their house
00:25:35
being burnt or some member of their
00:25:36
family being hurt or something to that
00:25:39
effect back then they didn't want
00:25:41
anything to do with the FBI the state
00:25:44
police or the local
00:25:50
police then in
00:25:53
1987 three informants contacted the FBI
00:25:56
field office in New Orleans
00:25:58
two by letter one by phone each claimed
00:26:02
to know the people responsible for
00:26:04
O'Neal Moore's murder as a result the
00:26:07
case was
00:26:09
reopened one of the two letters is very
00:26:13
specific on identifying individuals that
00:26:16
were within the pickup truck and the
00:26:19
getaway route of the pickup truck
00:26:22
involved we have looked at the three
00:26:24
individuals specifically mentioned in
00:26:26
this Anonymous letter have interviewed
00:26:28
their families or anyone that may be
00:26:30
associated with these three
00:26:32
individuals even after all this time the
00:26:35
FBI still does not have enough evidence
00:26:38
or information to make an arrest however
00:26:42
they do believe that the killers belong
00:26:44
to the clan we feel that it was members
00:26:48
of the Klux clan that took part in this
00:26:52
shooting but they did it on their own
00:26:54
they didn't allow other individuals to
00:26:57
have knowledge of of what they were
00:26:58
going to do since Moore and his partner
00:27:02
Creed Rogers took their last ride
00:27:04
together the South has
00:27:09
changed Rogers refused to be frightened
00:27:11
away from his police career and in 1988
00:27:15
he retired as a full captain from the
00:27:17
sheriff's department when people try to
00:27:21
kill you and you hadn't did anything to
00:27:23
them why that never leaves your mind
00:27:26
sometime you wanted to to still out
00:27:27
there still wanting to try it it's it's
00:27:32
a it's it's a bad
00:27:34
feeling I think that a lot of people
00:27:36
that was involved back then are getting
00:27:39
on up in years like myself and they
00:27:42
don't want to go face the allmighty with
00:27:45
that on their conscience and I think
00:27:47
before the final day somebody's going to
00:27:49
get it off of their
00:27:52
chest the FBI is offering a $20,000
00:27:56
reward for information leading to the
00:27:59
apprehension of O'Neal Moore's Killers

we recently told you the story of the
00:28:36
Dober family of Atlanta Georgia they
00:28:40
were headed to Mexico to celebrate the
00:28:42
Christmas holidays with
00:28:47
relatives on the second day of their
00:28:49
trip just after crossing the border the
00:28:52
weather suddenly changed and they were
00:28:55
caught in a freak snowstorm slow down a
00:28:58
little bit there buddy it's getting a
00:28:59
little bit slick out there okay we were
00:29:01
trying to be extremely cautious because
00:29:03
the road conditions were really getting
00:29:05
pretty bad and my father had just told
00:29:07
me to to even be extremely careful and
00:29:11
just moments after he had told me that I
00:29:13
suddenly lost
00:29:15

00:29:24
control all four people in the other car
00:29:27
were killed
00:29:28
the six members of the do party were
00:29:31
still alive but seriously
00:29:34
hurt luckily an American couple one of
00:29:37
whom was a doctor arrived at the crash
00:29:40
scene minutes later they pulled the Dos
00:29:43
from the wreckage and gave them the
00:29:45
medical care they so badly
00:29:50
needed I feel like it was a miracle many
00:29:53
times is an accident and we just drive
00:29:55
by an accident and they could have done
00:29:57
that that day day but they didn't they
00:29:59
stopped and through their stopping they
00:30:01
saved the lives of our family and we
00:30:04
just want to say thank
00:30:06
you
00:30:09
update when the do story aired a viewer
00:30:12
called our phone center she said that
00:30:15
some friends of hers told her the very
00:30:17
same story of the car accident it was
00:30:21
clear that Dr Nancy nef Hannan and her
00:30:24
husband John were the dover's guardian
00:30:26
angels later that evening the Hannon
00:30:29
spoke to Vance over Vance said well we
00:30:35
found
00:30:36
them that was it we found them they've
00:30:41
called and so it's like you know you
00:30:43
could hear a pin drop on the floor and
00:30:44
it's like you know um we couldn't
00:30:46
believe after 11 years we we found that
00:30:48
these Angels were real human
00:30:51
beings a few weeks later 30 members of
00:30:54
the do family gathered to meet the
00:30:56
hannin and talk about that fateful
00:30:59
Christmas Eve this is the lady do there
00:31:03
was a lady in the front seat which had
00:31:06
turned sideways so had to lift her up uh
00:31:10
cuz the front seat had broken off its
00:31:12
pedestal sort of supported that kind of
00:31:14
wedged myself in there supported that
00:31:16
with my shoulder as I tried to get him
00:31:18
get David out I remember the pain of
00:31:20
somebody pulling me out cuz I guess that
00:31:23
maybe it's where I I woke up whatever
00:31:26
because uh in my leg hurt really bad MH
00:31:29
I guess as a physician that was one of
00:31:33
the most helpless feelings I've ever had
00:31:36
I mean to have the knowledge and
00:31:38
everything but not the tools to do
00:31:40
anything it was just really frustrating
00:31:43
com to us you were like an angel from
00:31:46
God both of you and had you not been
00:31:48
there at all the whole family could have
00:31:51
possibly died and you were so
00:31:53
instrumental and so we just wanted to
00:31:56
say thank you
00:31:58
[Music]
00:32:06
for the police random crime is very real
00:32:09
and can be very difficult to solve for
00:32:12
families touched by such violence it's
00:32:14
simply impossible to understand or
00:32:17
accept the hurleys Pam and David and
00:32:20
their sons shared a normal and happy
00:32:22
life until one weekend in June David and
00:32:26
his brother were about to take take a
00:32:28
Boy Scout troop on a canoe trip David
00:32:31
couldn't sleep the night before okay you
00:32:33
have a good weekend you too I love you
00:32:36
love you too David left home at about
00:32:39
1:30
00:32:44
a.m. about an hour and a half later Pam
00:32:47
was surprised to hear her husband
00:32:49
calling out I need you to come down here
00:32:52
I've been shot what I've been shot what
00:32:55
are you talking about and I was stunned
00:32:58
and thoroughly shocked I just couldn't
00:33:01
comprehend that he had been shot that
00:33:04
was just too
00:33:05
unbelievable while they waited for
00:33:07
paramedics to arrive David told his wife
00:33:10
about the random
00:33:14
attack David was heading towards his
00:33:16
brother's house when suddenly a car
00:33:19
appeared out of
00:33:26
nowhere David thought that he and the
00:33:28
other driver would just exchange
00:33:30
insurance information and that would be
00:33:32
it hey man what's going on you talking
00:33:36
about are you all right I'm all
00:33:40
right hey man hey
00:33:49
[Music]
00:33:54
man he said all he can remember is
00:33:57
getting the van and trying desperately
00:34:01
to get home to get
00:34:02
away
00:34:04
size police and paramedics arrived at
00:34:07
around 3:30 a.m. and David told his
00:34:09
story again he was calm for a person had
00:34:13
just been shot at that particular time I
00:34:16
was concerned with getting information
00:34:18
that I could put on the air for the
00:34:21
other units that were still out on the
00:34:23
road okay man David was rushed by a
00:34:26
helicopter to to a hospital in
00:34:28
Pittsburgh 6 Mi away at 4:30 a.m. he was
00:34:33
wheeled into emergency surgery 2 hours
00:34:36
later doctors emerged from the operating
00:34:39
room and I remember we looked at the
00:34:41
clock and it was 6:30 a.m. and I looked
00:34:44
at my brother and I said this is great
00:34:46
they're done already it must have been a
00:34:48
lot better than we expected because we
00:34:50
expected 4 to 5 hours from what they
00:34:52
told us David had gunshot wounds in the
00:34:55
arm and shoulder and he was bleeding
00:34:57
internally
00:34:58
from a lacerated liver the operation had
00:35:01
gone well until David suddenly went into
00:35:04
cardiac arrest I said um you've got to
00:35:08
be
00:35:09
kidding and he
00:35:11
said no I'm not kidding he's
00:35:16
dead David Eugene Hurley husband and
00:35:20
father of three murdered at the age of
00:35:24
34 in searching for David's killer
00:35:27
police are limited to the sketchy
00:35:29
information David himself provided
00:35:32
before he
00:35:33
[Music]
00:35:35
died we only have the description of a
00:35:37
young black male driving a champagne
00:35:40
colored Honda
00:35:42
Prelude and it's a good possibility that
00:35:45
this individual is local when someone
00:35:47
you love dies it's very painful and that
00:35:52
never goes away and I'm sure that never
00:35:54
will but that pain is also turning to
00:35:56
anger
00:35:58
to realize that there's a person out
00:36:00
there continuing with his life as if
00:36:05
nothing happen just makes me very
00:36:08
angry if you have any information about

00:36:50
time for rape we'll find a body who's
00:36:53
body out of the blue Patterson confesses
00:36:56
that he and his girlfriend paet height
00:36:59
have killed two people p a t t e r s o
00:37:04
n and when did for he kill your sister
00:37:08
Patterson says one of the victims was
00:37:10
his own sister and he even reveals where
00:37:14
the body can be
00:37:15
found he was like a man on a mission he
00:37:18
was out to convince me and anyone else
00:37:20
that would listen to him that what he
00:37:22
had to say was real and he was out to
00:37:24
make the police act on it with this
00:37:26
urgency and his voice and and the detail
00:37:29
to what he was saying to us just made me
00:37:31
feel that everything he he was saying
00:37:33
was the truth and would be
00:37:37
founded detectives rushed to the address
00:37:39
Patterson gave yeah hi ma'am I'm sorry
00:37:42
to bother you we're from the police
00:37:45
department how do you know he was
00:37:47
telling the truth well we have to check
00:37:48
it out now it's probably just a crying
00:37:50
call hopefully Patterson had told
00:37:52
detectives to look for a discolored
00:37:55
patch of cement in the basement at the
00:37:58
foot of the steps under an old carpet
00:38:01
they found
00:38:03
it using sledgehammers and shovels the
00:38:07
investigators begin to dig like me yeah
00:38:12
I think you get a body Julius Patterson
00:38:15
was telling the truth up over here let
00:38:17
me get a shot yeah we already get shot
00:38:19
about a scale Julius Patterson has to be
00:38:21
the worst type of person possible for
00:38:23
somebody to to want to kill your sister
00:38:26
it's just mindboggling
00:38:28
like I said I've never seen that in my
00:38:29
entire police career Julius Patterson
00:38:32
and his girlfriend pauled height were
00:38:34
caretakers for Patterson's Sister Jesse
00:38:37
they had all lived together in the same
00:38:39
house other members of the Patterson
00:38:41
family confirmed that Jesse had
00:38:44
mysteriously vanished 5 years
00:38:49
earlier testing confirmed that the bones
00:38:51
were in fact those of 26-year-old Jesse
00:38:55
Patterson she had been born blind deaf
00:38:58
and mute her brother had murdered Jesse
00:39:02
to cash in on her social security
00:39:05
benefits Julius Patterson also confessed
00:39:09
to a second
00:39:12
murder hul Luther Gordon suffered from
00:39:15
Alzheimer's disease like Patterson's
00:39:18
sister Gordon was also under the care of
00:39:21
Patterson and his girlfriend
00:39:23
Paulette if you look at both of the
00:39:26
individuals Paul Luther Gordon and Jesse
00:39:28
Patterson both of these people um for
00:39:32
totally different reasons were incapable
00:39:35
of taking care of themselves and were
00:39:37
completely at the mercy of the people
00:39:39
that were entrusted with their
00:39:41
care um because someone took advantage
00:39:43
of that situation and that in itself is
00:39:46
not that unusual unfortunately but the
00:39:48
fact that they actually went on to kill
00:39:50
them uh for no other reason than to to
00:39:53
increase their own wealth um yes that
00:39:56
did take a special sign it
00:39:58
Force these pictures of Patterson and
00:40:00
height were taken by a bank ATM camera
00:40:04
authorities believe that over a 10-year
00:40:06
period the pair may have stolen as much
00:40:09
as
00:40:10
[Music]
00:40:11
$150,000 from their
00:40:14
victims yeah I'm coming detectives
00:40:16
traced the missing fugitives to a motel
00:40:19
in South New Jersey got a photograph
00:40:23
just mean anything to you the Patterson
00:40:25
and height had moved out the week before
00:40:27
before they were now on the

00:40:46
gave us a social security number she
00:40:48

00:41:28
