May 16, 2019 / 42:57

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the Son of Sam shootings, ghost sightings at the General Wayne Inn, and the kidnapping of Annie Laurie Herron.

Investigative reporter Maury Terry discusses the Son of Sam case, suggesting that David Berkowitz was part of a satanic cult responsible for the murders. The episode highlights discrepancies in eyewitness accounts and explores the possibility of multiple gunmen involved in the shootings.

The General Wayne Inn in Pennsylvania is featured for its haunted history. Innkeeper Barton Johnson shares ghostly experiences, including sightings of a Revolutionary War soldier. Paranormal investigator Mike Killeen conducts experiments to assess the hauntings.

The episode also tells the story of Annie Laurie Herron, who was kidnapped in Jackson, Mississippi. Her husband, Robert Herron, pleads for information regarding her whereabouts after a ransom note is left, linking the crime to Robert's business dealings.

Despite the payment of ransom, Annie Laurie remains missing, and the investigation continues with new developments, including the arrest of a suspect connected to the case.

TL;DR

Maury Terry discusses the Son of Sam cult theory, ghost sightings at the General Wayne Inn, and the ongoing search for kidnapped Annie Laurie Herron.

for over a hundred years people have
00:01:52
seen and heard things around the general
00:01:53
Wayne Inn in Philadelphia that they
00:01:55
cannot explain a number of different
00:01:58
ghosts who seem to have an unusual

agenda of mischief in mind

located in Merion Pennsylvania the
00:02:12
general Wayne Inn opened in 1704 and is
00:02:15
reputed to be the oldest continuously
00:02:17
functioning in in America Ben Franklin
00:02:21
visited the end and George Washington
00:02:24
slept in what is today this dining room
00:02:27
Edgar Allen Poe wrote part of his famous
00:02:30
poem The Raven here in 1836 but it is a
00:02:37
history of hauntings that brings us to
00:02:39
the general Wayne Inn Barton Johnson is
00:02:44
the innkeeper and serves as vice
00:02:46
president of the local Historical
00:02:47
Society we have had towels thrown all
00:02:51
over the kitchen we have had adding
00:02:55
machine problems we've had television
00:02:57
problems directly attributable to
00:02:59
something that it's not understandable
00:03:00
we have had reports of sightings of
00:03:04
entities ghosts we have had a funny
00:03:08
incident with a new Cadillac and the
00:03:10
parking lot outside last year a valet
00:03:15
walked by a Cadillac parked in front of
00:03:17
the inn the owner had gone inside and
00:03:20
had taken his keys with him
00:03:30
doors were locked windows were all
00:03:32
closed kid was scared to death and I
00:03:35
said look calm down these things happen
00:03:37
around here and just relax and I enjoy
00:03:41
these ghosts I mean they don't bother me
00:03:43
at all I think they come up with some
00:03:45
real clever little things on a busy
00:03:52
night that's when this entity will start
00:03:56
and you'll go down the entire side of
00:03:59
the bar blowing on the back of the girls
00:04:01
next and the poor guys they really were
00:04:04
doing nothing and I knew when the first
00:04:09
one started that it would continue all
00:04:11
the way down to the end of the bar it
00:04:13
always did what that happened so often
00:04:18
and I enjoyed standing back on the other
00:04:20
side of the bar and watching a hundreds
00:04:24
of occurrences have happened some very
00:04:27
minor some more dramatic but there have
00:04:29
been hundreds of them bart has witnessed
00:04:33
many ghostly events but is never
00:04:35
actually seen a ghost
00:04:37
dave rogers has I was made a day at the
00:04:41
time and I was we were closing the
00:04:44
restaurant up for the night
00:04:48
now he's starting on my way out and I
00:04:52
looked up I only saw it first but second
00:04:56
just a head sitting on this chest of
00:04:59
drawers it didn't register with me right
00:05:02
away and when I got out into the barrio
00:05:05
it was like like I had hit a brick wall
00:05:07
and it just stopped dead in my tracks
00:05:09
and I started saying I I saw a head I
00:05:11
saw something I saw a head it was just
00:05:15
like it happened yesterday I'll never
00:05:17
forget the details although I just saw
00:05:20
it for an instant
00:05:24
other employees have also seen
00:05:26
apparitions one day Alice Gormley was
00:05:29
walking through the dining room and I
00:05:32
heard someone call my name Alice Alice
00:05:36
so I walked out here to see if it was
00:05:38
the manager and I saw this apparition
00:05:43
this person on the on these stairs and
00:05:48
he was standing on this step and he
00:05:52
looks so startled and when I said can I
00:05:57
help you he just disappeared

00:06:05
local historian J Robert Monty has
00:06:08
studied the ins history in detail and
00:06:10
according to him the spectre has been
00:06:12
seen before over a hundred years ago the
00:06:17
first written record of a ghost in the
00:06:19
general Wayne Inn that we came across in
00:06:21
writing was a report of an election in
00:06:24
1848 that took place in here a lady went
00:06:28
down to the basement to get some more
00:06:30
ballots when she came up she said to the
00:06:33
lady in charge of the elections I just
00:06:36
saw a soldier down there in a green
00:06:38
uniform in recent times there have been
00:06:41
three new sightings of this soldier
00:06:43
letting interviewed three witnesses who
00:06:45
saw the same apparition at different
00:06:47
times each of them saw the ghost in this
00:06:50
basement I know the wine-cellar here
00:06:55
right by the door of the wine cellar but
00:06:59
each one of them saw the operation this
00:07:06
is it this is where they found him
00:07:08
and he stood right there each one
00:07:14
described the imperfect way the green
00:07:18
uniform and the yellowish lapel of the
00:07:21
and the black mustache of a hessian
00:07:22
soldier of the regiments that were
00:07:24
occupying Philadelphia at that time
00:07:28
Hessians were German mercenaries who
00:07:31
frequented the end during the
00:07:32
Revolutionary War what about the British
00:07:37
backs unsolved mysteries invited my
00:07:39
Killeen mayor a paranormal investigator
00:07:42
to the in my Killeen uses experimental
00:07:46
research techniques that can separate
00:07:48
fact from fiction for without evidence
00:07:50
she refuses to believe that ghosts exist
00:07:56
starting with the tale floorplans she
00:07:59
uses statistical analysis to evaluate
00:08:01
the responses are both skeptics and
00:08:03
hand-picked psychics who have been
00:08:05
brought to the scene of the hauntings
00:08:07
when we bring them into a an
00:08:09
experimental situation into a haunting
00:08:11
we ask them to tour the place where
00:08:15
something has been reported Mike Elena's
00:08:20
as psychic Paula Rogers to walk through
00:08:22
the building
00:08:23
Paula knew nothing about the ins history
00:08:26
she went through every room and in the
00:08:28
basement she made a surprising discovery
00:08:33
I got an extremely strong impression I
00:08:37
see a young soldier hiding I can still
00:08:41
see it and he's in a very old costume it
00:08:44
would probably to be at least 200 years
00:08:47
I could see if it was a memory him
00:08:50
crouched there petrifying he seemed to
00:08:53
have been left behind
00:08:56
Paula sensed the soldier only several
00:08:59
feet from the spot where witnesses had
00:09:01
reported seeing the Hessian coincidence
00:09:04
or something more you never know what
00:09:09
they're gonna do and you never know how
00:09:10
long they're gonna do it one night
00:09:16
during a local newscast Halloween story
00:09:19
on the end a number of regular patrons
00:09:21
gathered in the bar to watch as soon as
00:09:26
he showed the first scene of the inside
00:09:29
of this building a whole no flop over
00:09:32
now no snow perfect picture the whole
00:09:36
picture started to go very very slowly
00:09:39
clockwise all the way around 50 people
00:09:50
in the bar we're looking at this and
00:09:52
wondering what was going on and they're
00:09:55
all heads are all turning and the whole
00:09:57
thing just kept going around until our
00:10:00
portion was over but it never did that
00:10:03
before and I never did it afterwards and
00:10:05
no one else in the whole neighborhood
00:10:06
had it that way are there ghosts at the
00:10:11
inn Michael E mayor believes that
00:10:13
something unexplained is going on but as
00:10:16
is so often the case cannot prove for
00:10:19
certain that it is caused by ghosts we
00:10:22
did get some interesting results I can
00:10:24
only call them tentative at this point
00:10:25
but our measures experimental measures
00:10:27
are measures with random number
00:10:29
generators and some of our photography
00:10:33
measures have given us enough of a hint
00:10:35
that something is actually going on at
00:10:38
the general Wayne Inn that deserves a
00:10:40
great deal of further exploration
00:10:43
[Music]
00:10:45
I know I saw something I don't think it
00:10:50
was a figment of my imagination I don't
00:10:53
think it was a mirage or or whatever you
00:10:57
want to call it I I saw something that I
00:11:00
don't believe in ghosts but I know
00:11:01
they're here they have no other place to
00:11:05
go and they might as well have a little
00:11:06
fun and that's exactly what they're
00:11:08
doing and I don't think they're going
00:11:10
anywhere either our next story is about
00:11:21
a modern-day Good Samaritan woman who
00:11:23
dedicated her life to helping others
00:11:25
first as a mother and community
00:11:27
volunteer and later as an advocate for
00:11:29
children's rights and as a
00:11:30
court-appointed attorney for criminal
00:11:32
defendants who could not otherwise
00:11:33
afford legal counsel two years ago she
00:11:37
fell victim to the same type of street
00:11:38
criminal she wants vigorously defended
00:11:42
after raising three children
00:11:44
Gretchen Burford embarked on a new life
00:11:46
in 1979 when she enrolled in law school
00:11:49
at the age of 41 by 1984 Gretchen had a
00:11:53
full-time practice in Palo Alto
00:11:55
California she specialized in criminal
00:11:58
defense and juvenile law motivated by a
00:12:01
lifelong concern for the underprivileged
00:12:03
especially minorities and children it
00:12:06
appears it's a 418 on you're looking at
00:12:08
possible time in state prison I think
00:12:11
justice was really important to my
00:12:12
mother Jessica and I think that's part
00:12:14
of the reason she was drawn to a career
00:12:16
in law she wanted to help people who
00:12:20
didn't maybe start out with all the
00:12:22
benefits that her children had Gretchen
00:12:25
put her heart and soul into defending
00:12:27
the people and she worked hard with them
00:12:29
not only just with the legal defense but
00:12:31
there are a lot of things that she would
00:12:33
be involved in as far as their personal
00:12:35
lives
00:12:40
February 26 1988 was a normal Friday for
00:12:44
Gretchen Burford late that afternoon she
00:12:46
left her office and started home for the
00:12:48
weekend
00:12:49
the police are unclear on her subsequent
00:12:52
movements but with the help of computer
00:12:54
banking logs and eyewitness testimony
00:12:56
they have sketched out a probable
00:12:57
scenario they do believe that what
00:13:01
happened next was a random act of
00:13:02
violence by an assailant unknown to her
00:13:06
[Music]
00:13:08
bank records verify that his 6:30 7:00
00:13:11
p.m.
00:13:12
Gretchen deposited a check for four
00:13:14
hundred and forty nine dollars at a
00:13:15
branch bank four blocks from her office
00:13:17
in Palo Alto it was a beginning of a
00:13:20
nightmare and would last for 30
00:13:22
terrifying minutes
00:13:32
[Music]
00:13:34
it's here that we suspect that her
00:13:38
assailant may have accosted her for the
00:13:40
first time she may have been the type of
00:13:44
person who left her car unlocked which
00:13:47
is what assailants looked for when they
00:13:50
are stalking their victims she's near a
00:13:53
walk-up teller at night obviously she
00:13:59
would be a target for some type of an
00:14:01
attack Gretchen was was naive about
00:14:04
about how she handled herself especially
00:14:07
outdoors she was never really aware of
00:14:11
what was going on around her the way she
00:14:14
looked at things I think she looked
00:14:15
looking people very trusting Lee
00:14:23
[Music]
00:14:28
authorities speculate the Gretchen was
00:14:30
abducted in the bank parking lot some
00:14:32
five to ten minutes after arriving there
00:14:34
the next 20 minutes are a complete
00:14:37
mystery you drive up to go go you can do
00:14:51
some serious jail time for this we can
00:14:54
only speculate as to what was going on
00:14:56
during that 20 minutes she was used to
00:15:00
this type of person and perhaps was
00:15:03
trying to appeal to him as to what the
00:15:07
consequences would be who knows
00:15:09
we don't know at 7:02 p.m. 25 minutes
00:15:15
after her first bank transaction
00:15:17
Gretchen attempted to withdraw money
00:15:19
from another bank machine three miles
00:15:21
away this transaction was aborted and
00:15:24
she requested more cash than she was
00:15:26
authorized to withdraw police assume
00:15:29
Gretchen may have been trying to
00:15:30
discourage her abductor
00:15:32
where's money we had two witnesses pull
00:15:39
up behind Gretchen's vehicle the male
00:15:42
driver saw a struggle going on inside
00:15:45
the car he saw the driver's door open
00:15:48
and then it appeared that she was pulled
00:15:50
back inside
00:15:52
[Music]
00:16:05
witnesses have told us that she got out
00:16:08
of her car screaming he stabbed me he
00:16:10
stabbed me and helped me and she
00:16:14
collapsed immediately so the wound was
00:16:17
it was definitely a one single stab and
00:16:20
it was fatal police believe that
00:16:24
Gretchen Berger deliberately caused the
00:16:26
accident in a desperate attempt to
00:16:27
escape her car came to rest 150 yards on
00:16:34
the drive-up teller machine in the
00:16:37
aftermath two witnesses were able to get
00:16:39
a clear and detailed look at her killer
00:16:41
a lady jumped out of the car and
00:16:47
screaming that she was stabbed and then
00:16:50
he got out of the car stared me and my
00:16:53
friend down then he turned around and
00:16:56
ran within two seconds three seconds he
00:17:00
was out of sight since the girl hit the
00:17:02
ground she said she was dead we went for
00:17:04
her
00:17:06
[Music]
00:17:09
step she was lying on the ground and I
00:17:12
can see a little pool of blood
00:17:14
she was looking up at me she was saying
00:17:17
I'm dying I'm gonna die I said you're
00:17:21
just bleeding and you're gonna be fine
00:17:23
such a you know relax and I held her
00:17:25
hand she looked up at me her eyes roll
00:17:29
back and her eyes closed and it kind of
00:17:33
I guess her life ended right there when
00:17:44
I arrived at the scene Gretchen had
00:17:46
already been transported to an emergency
00:17:49
room yeah female stabbing victim we have
00:17:53
a perimeter set up I almost immediately
00:17:58
started processing her vehicle for any
00:18:01
evidence looked inside and saw a Paisley
00:18:08
baseball hat in the rear passenger
00:18:10
compartment that just seemed out of
00:18:12
place later confirm that that did not
00:18:17
belong to her and it's unknown how that
00:18:19
got in her car so we assumed that it
00:18:23
belonged to our suspect the next day
00:18:27
authorities recovered the murder weapon
00:18:28
a butcher knife with an eight-inch blade
00:18:31
it was found in a driveway one block
00:18:34
from the scene but provided no
00:18:35
additional leads the investigation next
00:18:39
focused on the unusual hat found in
00:18:41
Gretchen's car a check with the
00:18:43
manufacturer revealed that only two
00:18:45
stores in the area stocked this item
00:18:48
even though all attempts to connect the
00:18:50
Paisley hat with a suspect have failed
00:18:52
police are convinced it holds the key to
00:18:55
solving the case
00:18:58
I think it's ironic that that my mother
00:19:03
would have gone on helping you know for
00:19:05
years probably that she had only just
00:19:08
started her law career that she had so
00:19:11
much to give and was giving so much and
00:19:13
in helping so many people and that it
00:19:18
was you know it was just ended by
00:19:20
somebody who had no idea who she was or
00:19:22
what she was or you know ability to care
00:19:25
about her

00:19:52
last week examined the Son of Sam
00:19:54
shootings that took place in New York in
00:19:56
1976 and 1977 investigative reporter
00:20:01
Maury Terry believes that the Son of Sam
00:20:03
did not act alone that he was part of an
00:20:05
organized conspiracy that carried out a
00:20:08
year-long reign of terror in New York
00:20:10
City the Son of Sam shootings began on
00:20:14
July 29th 1976 in 8 separate incidents
00:20:21
six people were killed and seven
00:20:23
seriously wounded all of the shots were
00:20:26
fired by 44 caliber revolver police
00:20:30
created composites from eyewitness
00:20:32
accounts of the shootings the difference
00:20:35
in appearance suggested more than one
00:20:36
suspect but on August 10th David
00:20:41
Berkowitz was arrested and confessed to
00:20:44
all of the Son of Sam shootings
00:20:46
investigative reporter Maury Terry
00:20:48
gathered evidence that indicated that
00:20:50
more than one man was involved the
00:20:54
general perception among the public for
00:20:57
years had been that David Berkowitz was
00:20:59
a lone gunman the facts and the evidence
00:21:01
not speculation two facts in the
00:21:04
evidence say otherwise Terry found major
00:21:07
discrepancies and eyewitness accounts of
00:21:09
the last shooting that support his
00:21:11
theory of more than one gunman
00:21:13
eyewitness Tommy Zane I was parked just
00:21:16
in front of the victim's car and he got
00:21:18
a good look at the gun no I didn't think
00:21:22
it was David Berkowitz then and I don't
00:21:24
think it's him now and thankfully I
00:21:26
don't think it's him a yellow Volkswagen
00:21:28
had been spotted leaving the crime scene
00:21:30
it may have contained one or more
00:21:32
accomplices to the shooting
00:21:36
columnist Jimmy Breslin received a
00:21:38
letter from the Son of Sam in this
00:21:40
letter there were cryptic references to
00:21:42
the quote 22 disciples in hell and a
00:21:46
wicked King wicker John Wheaties the
00:21:49
rapist and Suffolk Eater of young girls
00:21:51
was also mentioned the letter was signed
00:21:54
the Son of Sam underneath was a satanic
00:21:58
symbol Maury Terry believes that the
00:22:03
breslin letter was sent not by Berkowitz
00:22:05
but rather by a satanic cult that
00:22:07
operated in Berkowitz's Yonkers
00:22:09
neighborhood he also believes that
00:22:11
Berkowitz was a member of the cult that
00:22:13
it was this group that planned and
00:22:15
executed the Son of Sam attacks David
00:22:20
Berkowitz lived in a seventh floor
00:22:21
apartment in Yonkers down the hill was a
00:22:25
street named wicker could this be the
00:22:28
king wicker mentioned in the Breslin
00:22:29
letter wicker Street was near the home
00:22:32
of another character believed to be
00:22:34
mentioned in the letter
00:22:35
John Wheaties I learned that the John
00:22:40
Wheaties rapist and suffocate ur alias
00:22:43
of the killer in the present letter was
00:22:45
not really an alias at all but it was
00:22:46
the name of a real person that person
00:22:49
was John Carr who was the real-life Son
00:22:51
of Sam car John Kahrs nickname was
00:22:54
Wheaties and I learned this within a day
00:22:55
of the arrest and from then on I became
00:22:58
deeper and deeper involved in the case
00:23:00
trying to locate John Carr this is the
00:23:03
face of John Carr and these are the
00:23:07
composite drawings of the 44 caliber
00:23:09
killers Maury Terry believes that there
00:23:12
is a resemblance between these two and
00:23:14
John Carr Terry Trek John Carter Minot
00:23:19
North Dakota where he had worked as a
00:23:21
mechanic at a local Air Force Base
00:23:23
though he lived in Minot during the mid
00:23:25
70s car frequently commuted to New York
00:23:28
during the time of the Son of Sam
00:23:30
attacks from my experience John Carr was
00:23:34
a mixed up drug addict
00:23:36
he was hanging around with the group of
00:23:38
people that were on the other side of
00:23:40
the law all the time John Carr many many
00:23:43
months before Berkowitz was ever
00:23:45
arrested had talked about his friend
00:23:47
Berkey to his friends out in Minot North
00:23:48
Dakota John Carr was a friend of a
00:23:53
confidant of an an associate of David
00:23:56
Berkowitz on February 17th 1978
00:24:00
six months after Berkowitz's arrest John
00:24:03
Carr was found dead in his girlfriend's
00:24:05
Minot apartment when I first walked in
00:24:08
the room it was a ghastly sight
00:24:10
obviously the guy had sat on the edge of
00:24:12
the bed put the gun in his mouth and
00:24:14
pulled the trigger my first interview
00:24:17
with his live-in girlfriend at the time
00:24:19
she told me that he must have just taken
00:24:21
his own life
00:24:21
the next day same person new interview
00:24:27
whole new story John Carr had to have
00:24:30
been murdered he was wanted by the
00:24:32
police in New York for the Son of Sam
00:24:34
killings he was afraid for his life and
00:24:38
I fully believe that John Carr was
00:24:41
murdered through interviews with cars
00:24:46
friends and the police officials in
00:24:48
North Dakota the picture emerged of John
00:24:51
Carr being heavily involved in satanic
00:24:53
cult activity both in Minot North Dakota
00:24:55
and in Westchester County New York where
00:24:58
he spent part of his time it involved
00:25:01
blood drinking urine drinking the
00:25:03
ritualistic sacrifice of animals
00:25:06
specifically German shepherds all sorts
00:25:09
of a very horrible activity that certain
00:25:13
satanic cults get into the satanic
00:25:16
symbol found on the Breslin letter
00:25:17
directly under the signature of Son of
00:25:19
Sam was also found inscribed on cars my
00:25:22
nut phonebook one of cars my nerd
00:25:27
acquaintances was a man named Phil
00:25:29
Falken Falken accidentally walked in on
00:25:32
John Carr and a companion performing a
00:25:35
satanic ritual Phil Falcon told us that
00:25:39
he walked into his own house one night
00:25:41
in North Dakota and found John Carr and
00:25:45
another friend of cars part of the
00:25:46
circle in the act of ritualistic Lee sac
00:25:49
facing an animal right into Falcons
00:25:51
house and phil falcon also told us that
00:26:00
john car belongs to a very very violent
00:26:03
satanic cult prison sources who knew
00:26:06
Berkowitz told Maury Terry that
00:26:08
Berkowitz had been introduced to this
00:26:10
cult by John Kahrs brother Michael in
00:26:13
1975 Michael car ended up inviting
00:26:19
Berkowitz to attend of what he called a
00:26:21
floating coven party and Berkowitz came
00:26:24
in and attended the party and
00:26:26
symbolically not literally but
00:26:28
symbolically the 44 was put into his
00:26:30
hand that night that's how he got in -
00:26:33
into the cult scene at 4:00 a.m. on
00:26:37
October 4th 1979 over two years after
00:26:41
Berkowitz's arrest Michael Carr was
00:26:43
killed he was driving at a high rate of
00:26:46
speed when he crashed into a light post
00:26:48
on New York's West Side Highway he died
00:26:53
just 18 months after his brother
00:26:59
conclusive proof that Berkowitz knew
00:27:01
both John and Michael car came during
00:27:03
two of his depositions on October 25th
00:27:06
1978 when asked point-blank whether he
00:27:10
knew John Karr he answered yes in
00:27:14
another deposition taken on January 19th
00:27:16
1982 Berkowitz was asked if the cars
00:27:19
were part of a satanic cult he also
00:27:22
answered yes when asked whether the
00:27:26
brothers were killed to ensure their
00:27:27
silence Berkowitz again responded yes
00:27:32
Maury Terry believes that the death of
00:27:35
the cars may have been engineered by the
00:27:37
quote 22 disciples of hell mentioned in
00:27:40
the Breslin letter he also believes this
00:27:45
is a satanic group that held the rituals
00:27:47
in Hunter Meyer Park located just one
00:27:49
mile from Berkowitz's apartment on
00:27:56
August 11th 1977 the day after
00:27:59
Berkowitz's arrest two young boys led
00:28:02
police to a grave
00:28:03
contained the bodies of three German
00:28:05
shepherds two of them have been
00:28:09
strangled with chains one had been shot
00:28:11
in the head
00:28:12
at least ten other slaughtered dogs had
00:28:15
been found in the park area we received
00:28:19
information that groups of people who
00:28:21
are tired themselves and black or
00:28:24
dark-colored robes with hoods were
00:28:27
chanting carrying on subtypes of rituals
00:28:31
on the aqueduct the rear of on Tamiya
00:28:34
Park subsequently authorities did find
00:28:37
some remains of dogs and the information
00:28:41
that we had was that this group of
00:28:43
people were sacrificing animals in a
00:28:47
satanic ritual I got a call from a young
00:28:51
boy in Yonkers fifteen year old high
00:28:53
school sophomore wanted to know if I
00:28:55
knew that there was a satanic cult that
00:28:57
was meeting in on tomorrow Park in
00:29:00
Yonkers and killing dogs and so I met
00:29:03
him down there it's just just about a
00:29:05
mile from Berkowitz's residence and he
00:29:07
took me around to various spots and
00:29:09
under Meyer Park me where the cult was
00:29:12
meeting we saw the satanic graffiti very
00:29:15
sophisticated graffiti at the time and
00:29:17
took me throughout the park
00:29:23
I saw the remains of probably two or
00:29:26
three German dead German Shepherds right
00:29:28
there at that time and he took me along
00:29:30
the aqueduct literally the gutters of
00:29:33
NYC from the Breslin letter and showed
00:29:36
me where they had set up an altar an
00:29:38
altar they had they place the altar
00:29:40
board right over here in between the
00:29:43
trees and we had to call - we knew where
00:29:46
it was meeting and we could tie it right
00:29:48
- YES on a Sam case and the Son of Sam
00:29:51
letter it was a very significant
00:29:52
development in a case you'd like to see
00:29:55
your cases resolved with a conviction or
00:29:59
an acquittal or no case or whatever but
00:30:02
it's when you have these constant doubts
00:30:03
who else was involved were there others
00:30:06
involved in to what extent will they do
00:30:09
it again you see that becomes the the
00:30:12
overriding concern
00:30:14
if there is someone out there who was
00:30:16
involved in the Berkowitz cases in the
00:30:19
killing of a number of people in the
00:30:21
wounding of a number of people and that
00:30:23
person is bent on doing the same thing
00:30:25
again
00:30:26
than the public's in jeopardy and so
00:30:28
certainly I would like to have that
00:30:29
solve and get that person out of the way
00:30:32
cult activity has continued around under
00:30:35
Meyer Park since the Son of Sam killings
00:30:37
while we were filming to local residents
00:30:40
told us he had witnessed a satanic
00:30:42
ceremony in 1987 about a year and a half
00:30:46
ago me and my cousin were watching TV
00:30:48
and we saw a car headlights go banyak
00:30:51
what I passed when my cousin took a
00:30:53
flashlight and I took on a baseball bat
00:30:54
and walked up through my yard onto the
00:30:57
aqueduct path then this has been about
00:31:00
fifteen or thirty people and it was one
00:31:02
guy and he must have been like the head
00:31:04
chant there was something cuz he was
00:31:06
chanting aloud if nobody other people we
00:31:11
just froze we didn't know what to do but
00:31:13
we've never encountered something like
00:31:14
this before
00:31:17
we both decided to get out of it we
00:31:20
didn't want to get seen because you
00:31:21
don't know what people like that'll do
00:31:26
but I think it would serve the public
00:31:27
interest for us to know if in fact a
00:31:30
cult does exist if in fact they engage
00:31:34
in satanic activities if in fact
00:31:36
sacrifice is part of that activity if in
00:31:39
fact human life is the sacrificial
00:31:41
aspect of that activity and how it's
00:31:44
impacting upon life in our respective
00:31:47
communities the Queens District Attorney
00:31:50
would like to question the individuals
00:31:51
that matched these composites they would
00:31:54
also like to locate the yellow 1971
00:31:56
Volkswagen noticed at the scene of one
00:31:58
of the Son of Sam attacks his license
00:32:00
ends with the letters G you are or G V R
00:32:07
if Maury Terry is correct the satanic
00:32:11
group responsible for the Son of Sam
00:32:12
attacks is still alive still meeting as
00:32:15
still recruiting new members if there's
00:32:18
last claim is true certainly that is the
00:32:21
most disturbing thought of all next the
00:32:25
story of a Mississippi million
00:32:27
Spratly searching for his kidnapped wife
00:32:28
the ransom money has been paid Annie
00:32:31
Laurie Heron is still missing in this
00:32:43
house Jackson Mississippi that 71 year
00:32:46
old Robert Harold but of the wealthiest
00:32:48
men in the state his wife Annie Laurie
00:32:51
Herron is 72 a devoted wife and mother
00:32:54
she's well beloved and extremely active
00:32:57
in the social and civic life of Jackson
00:32:59
on July the 26th Annie Laurie Herron was
00:33:03
kidnapped
00:33:08
good morning 12 days later Robert hare
00:33:12
and Clara press carcase at his hangar
00:33:14
the kidnapping was linked to one of
00:33:16
Harry's businesses I wanted to make a
00:33:18
personal plea to the kidnapper my name
00:33:22
is Robert Harry
00:33:23
my wife Amal I was taken from our home
00:33:26
over ten days ago my children and I have
00:33:29
done everything humanly possible to
00:33:31
obtain her release like any business man
00:33:35
I've made decisions which may appear to
00:33:39
others as unfeeling but those
00:33:41
appearances are just not true
00:33:44
moreover those business decisions were
00:33:47
mine not my wife's she had absolutely
00:33:51
nothing to do with my children I appeal
00:34:04
think my mom all the time and I'm sure
00:34:07
my daddy does too
00:34:09
there's no real way to quantify what
00:34:12
this how enormous a tragedy an ordeal
00:34:15
this has been to him and to the rest of
00:34:17
the family annie laurie herons
00:34:20
kidnapping was unusual rather than
00:34:23
simply insisting on money for himself
00:34:24
the kidnapper left a note naming 12
00:34:27
people who meet felt were owed money by
00:34:29
one of robert herons companies and
00:34:31
should be paid back it is Robert herons
00:34:34
desperate hope that someone watching
00:34:36
tonight will come forward with
00:34:37
information that will lead him to the
00:34:39
woman he loved
00:34:40
woman he married 48 years
00:34:46
when Robert Herren came home from work
00:34:48
on the afternoon of July the 26th he was
00:34:51
alarmed to find that his wife was not in
00:34:53
the house after checking with friends
00:34:57
and family he called the police to
00:35:00
report her missing
00:35:01
I'll wait right here for you officer
00:35:03
thank you
00:35:04
then mr. heron made an alarming
00:35:06
discovery a note apparently left by a
00:35:11
kidnapper lay by his front door the note
00:35:15
said do not call the police however mr.
00:35:19
herring had notified the police prior to
00:35:22
the note being discovered responding to
00:35:25
mr. Harris missing-persons report police
00:35:27
arrived at the scene and found that it
00:35:29
was now a kidnapping connected in some
00:35:32
way to robert herons business dealings
00:35:35
john you need to take a look at this
00:35:39
robert heron put these people back in
00:35:42
the shape they was in before they got
00:35:45
mixed up with school pictures the
00:35:47
demands in the note were very vague l
00:35:49
made several demands of mr. heron
00:35:52
concerning certainly individuals listed
00:35:55
in there who were allegedly harmed by a
00:35:59
company of which mr. heron was president
00:36:03
Heron had been president of school
00:36:05
pictures a company that sells franchises
00:36:08
to photographers throughout the United
00:36:10
States to produce portraits of
00:36:12
schoolchildren between 1981 and 1983 in
00:36:17
an effort to collect outstanding debts
00:36:19
school pictures file lawsuits against 12
00:36:22
franchise owners in eight states
00:36:24
including Florida
00:36:28
on the day of Annie Laurie herons
00:36:30
kidnapping neighbors had reported seeing
00:36:33
vehicles have seen out of place in the
00:36:35
neighborhood
00:36:37
we had calls from various people that
00:36:41
there had been two particular vehicles
00:36:43
that had been seen in that neighborhood
00:36:45
one of which was a pickup truck and the
00:36:49
other was a white cargo van the cargo
00:36:53
van at a Florida Clayton police
00:37:00
discovered that the twelve people on the
00:37:02
kidnappers list for the same 12-seat
00:37:04
bicycle picture they resided in eight
00:37:07
different states but they were all sued
00:37:09
through the Hinds County Court in
00:37:11
Jackson Mississippi
00:37:12
their names were easily available to the
00:37:15
general public and County Court records
00:37:17
this means that the kidnapper need not
00:37:19
have been one of the twelve people on
00:37:21
the note it's possible at these 12
00:37:25
people had absolutely nothing to do with
00:37:27
this abduction but however you can't
00:37:29
rule out the fact that maybe somebody
00:37:31
especially they had the knowledge of
00:37:33
screwed pictures and it's an operation
00:37:35
could have been involved with it no
00:37:39
specific ransom demand was contained in
00:37:43
the letter we assumed it was a ransom
00:37:46
note and we wanted to comply we wanted
00:37:49
to do everything we could to get mother
00:37:51
back school pictures was requested to
00:37:54
look into their files on these twelve
00:37:57
people the transactions were reviewed
00:37:59
and letters were of course sent out to
00:38:03
these twelve people trying to determine
00:38:06
what damages that that they had what did
00:38:10
they want at that point we didn't get a
00:38:16
response except from several them saying
00:38:18
we don't want anything
00:38:21
eight days after his press conference
00:38:23
Robert Haran received a letter you
00:38:25
recognize the handwriting it belonged to
00:38:28
his wife Annie Laurie we had hit a very
00:38:32
low ebb prior to August 15th and that
00:38:36
was the day that we received a letter in
00:38:38
mother's handwriting and it basically
00:38:41
fled with Daddy again to comply with the
00:38:45
demands and to please save her this gave
00:38:51
us quite an emotional lift because it
00:38:53
meant that mother apparently had
00:38:55
survived the initial struggle but it
00:38:57
still was extremely vague as to what we
00:38:59
were to do at that point daddy in order
00:39:03
to do something to show our a good faith
00:39:06
effort to comply with these vague
00:39:07
demands instructed his attorneys to
00:39:10
check these roles and find out how much
00:39:13
school Pictures had sued these twelve
00:39:16
individuals for Robert Haran seniors set

Herron was abducted from her home and
00:39:34
neither her family know the authorities

has had word from her or the kidnapper
00:39:38

it's been our sincere desire from the
00:39:45
very beginning from the moment of the
00:39:47
kidnapping that we do everything
00:39:49
possible to comply with these demands we
00:39:51
won't mother back it's not our intention
00:39:55
to question the motive of these peoples
00:39:57
at this point whatever they want we want
00:40:00
to give it to them so we can get mother
00:40:02
back that is our very paramount concern
