Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 11, Episode 12 - Full Episode

May 23, 2019 / 44:29

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the mysterious disappearances and murders of Janice and Alyssa Owen, the double homicide of Tina Creamer and Robert Miller, and the case of Trisha Autry's disappearance.

In Boonville, Missouri, Janice Owen and her eight-year-old daughter Alyssa vanished on a Monday afternoon. Witnesses reported unusual activity outside their home before Alyssa's body was discovered the next day. Janice's body was found weeks later, leading to the arrest of Angela and Eric DeMise, who were seen near their home.

The episode also discusses the tragic murders of Tina Creamer and Robert Miller in Oklahoma. Tina's ex-husband, David Kemp, had a history of stalking and was later identified as the prime suspect after shell casings from a gun he owned matched those found at the crime scene. Kemp fled but was eventually captured in California.

Lastly, the case of fifteen-year-old Trisha Autry, who disappeared from her home, is examined. Investigators suspect she may have been abducted after she was seen getting into a red car. Tragically, her remains were later discovered, and Kody Lynn Nielsen was arrested in connection with her death.

The episode highlights the heartbreak and ongoing investigations surrounding these cases, leaving many questions unanswered.

00:02:12
mother of two finished her shift at the

00:02:27
about an hour later Janice's
00:02:29
eight-year-old daughter Alyssa was on
00:02:31
her way home a sweet kid with a sunny
00:02:34
disposition
00:02:35
Alyssa got along well with everyone she
00:02:39
was riding alone that Monday her older
00:02:42
brother had been dropped off earlier at
00:02:44
the babysitters
00:02:47
she's a cute little smiling girl
00:02:50
I just noticed her when she got off the
00:02:53
bus and walked in front of my bus to get
00:02:55
on her property
00:02:56
I watched her angle toward the front
00:03:00
door of this residence and then I was on
00:03:02
my way
00:03:07
later that afternoon
00:03:09
Janice's mother stopped by to say hello
00:03:11
Janet I tried the door and it was
00:03:14
unlocked no she didn't answer me so I
00:03:20
walked on through the house and she
00:03:23
wasn't anywhere to be found in there
00:03:26
Alyssa's coat was on the couch her
00:03:29
backpack on the floor but Frances found
00:03:31
no sign of her daughter or granddaughter
00:03:35
it was now 5:00 p.m.
00:03:40
so I wrote a note that I'd been there
00:03:42
and I thought it was funny that night
00:03:44
she didn't call me but there was nothing
00:03:47
messed up or anything that would it give
00:03:49
me any idea anything was wrong 5:45 p.m.
00:03:55
a neighbor returning home from work says
00:03:58
she saw some unusual activity outside
00:04:00
Janice's home there was people standing
00:04:05
outside her duplex there was cars parked
00:04:08
on the street that usually I mean I just
00:04:12
never noticed before there was a woman
00:04:17
on the porch and there was a younger guy
00:04:19
he was wearing the red baseball cap
00:04:22
they were both facing the street and
00:04:23
they both stared at me as I drove by I
00:04:28
kind of thought something was odd about
00:04:31
the situation
00:04:35
15 minutes later Amy noticed more
00:04:38
strange activity outside Janice's home
00:04:46
there was a white four-door car in front
00:04:49
of her house but on the wrong side of
00:04:51
the street and I saw a different guy
00:04:53
facing me looking down towards my end of
00:04:57
the street my intuition was telling me
00:05:01
there's something wrong and I didn't
00:05:03
know if it was domestic dispute or what
00:05:05
it was but the thought that severe
00:05:08
horror would truly happen to anybody
00:05:09
that never crossed my mind
00:05:13
Janice Owen and her daughter ELISA had
00:05:15
simply disappeared and what happened
00:05:18
between 3:15 p.m. a 6:00 p.m. that
00:05:20
Monday afternoons they owned home would
00:05:22
become the topic of much speculation
00:05:24
police department from two rural
00:05:26
counties soon found themselves
00:05:27
handcuffed by a puzzling case the first
00:05:30
of its kind in this area in 20 years
00:05:32
even big-city detectives called to
00:05:34
assist in the case could make no sense
00:05:36
of the evidence the next day Tuesday
00:05:43
8:45 a.m.
00:05:46
on the outskirts at Fayette Missouri
00:05:48
just 12 miles north of Boonville three
00:05:52
employees from a local sawmill spotted
00:05:54
something on the side of the road at
00:06:05
first glance he thought it was a
00:06:06
mannequin it turned out to be the
00:06:13
lifeless body of a young child
00:06:15
minutes later the Howard County Sheriff
00:06:18
arrived on the scene there was no signs
00:06:22
of any trauma or anything so what we
00:06:24
call the coroner and he arrived and and
00:06:27
could determine that she probably did
00:06:28
you know at least dead six to eight
00:06:30
hours a lot of Sheriff Paulson Howard
00:06:32
County Sheriff's Department with no
00:06:35
reports of any missing children locally
00:06:36
sheriff Polson contacted Boonville
00:06:39
police a neighboring Cooper County yeah
00:06:42
I'll check it out and I'll call you back
00:06:43
as soon as I know anything okay
00:06:45
detective Bob one of her made calls to
00:06:47
several schools and soon had an answer
00:06:49
little Alyssa Owen had been absent that
00:06:52
days it turned out to be her body found
00:06:55
on the side of the road

00:07:01
Tuesday 12:15 p.m.
00:07:04
detective Oliver drove over to see
00:07:07
Alyssa's mother and deliver the terrible
00:07:09
news no answer
00:07:15
suspicious he went inside hello anybody
00:07:20
home mrs. Owen no sign of Janice Owen I
00:07:25
didn't see anything out of the ordinary
00:07:28
that would give me any suspicions that
00:07:30
there was a struggle no signs of any
00:07:32
blood no signs of any kind of any trauma
00:07:36
or anything we did not see anything out
00:07:39
of the ordinary at the house onesy
00:07:43
detective Oliver got a call from the
00:07:45
corner the autopsy revealed Alyssa had
00:07:48
died of suffocation her mother was not
00:07:51
only missing she had become the prime
00:07:53
suspect in a murder case but what
00:07:57
possible motive could she have friends
00:07:59
say Janice adored her daughter as the
00:08:02
investigation continued more perplexing
00:08:05
questions surfaced about the events of
00:08:06
Monday afternoon was a woman named e
00:08:10
podium song of course Janice Owen Amy
00:08:13
wasn't sure she really didn't know her
00:08:16
very well and who were the two men one
00:08:20
wearing a red baseball cap the other
00:08:22
standing by the white car she didn't
00:08:24
know them at all but amy was sure of the
00:08:27
time 5:45 p.m. some 45 minutes after
00:08:32
Janice's mother told detectives she
00:08:34
stopped by the house and found it empty
00:08:40
lieutenant Welliver Police Department
00:08:43
detectives began canvassing the area for
00:08:46
more clues another neighbor reported
00:08:49
seeing an older model dark-colored
00:08:50
pickup truck parked near Janice's home
00:08:52
Monday afternoon
00:08:55
then an employee with a local waste
00:08:57
disposal company came forward
00:08:59
he described seeing a similar pickup
00:09:02
truck Tuesday morning on the same Road
00:09:04
Alisa was found just minutes before the
00:09:06
sawmill workers discovered her body and
00:09:10
his what body's going slow and I looked
00:09:12
at him he's looking at me so I waved and
00:09:14
he didn't turn his head away away for
00:09:15
nothing just stared and just kept right
00:09:17
on going and the guy who's wearing her
00:09:20
red ball cap
00:09:22
Jeff Stacy never got a look into the bed
00:09:25
of the pickup truck but he thinks he
00:09:27
knows what was there a body of Alyssa
00:09:30
Owen
00:09:30
Jeff was certain as she was not lying on
00:09:33
the side of the road when he drove by
00:09:34
minutes earlier fare down to there had
00:09:39
to have done it after 8:30 because I see
00:09:41
they're not you know there's no way why
00:09:43
she was lying at I was saying I miss
00:09:45
seeing her
00:09:48
was the man behind the wheel the same
00:09:50
one reportedly seen at Janice's home on
00:09:52
Monday and was a dark green pickup truck
00:09:55
parked near her home that afternoon the
00:09:57
same one spotted near the crime scene
00:09:58
Tuesday morning detectives searched for
00:10:02
answers but came up empty over the next
00:10:07
month they chased hundreds of other
00:10:08
leads dead ends at every turn and still
00:10:11
no sign of Janice Owen then on March 27
00:10:15
2002 six weeks after Alyssa's death
00:10:18
tragedy struck again Janice's body was
00:10:22
discovered in a creek bed some 12 miles
00:10:25
from where her daughter had been found
00:10:30
[Music]
00:10:32
she'd been in the water quite a while
00:10:34
but there were no really serious signs
00:10:37
of trauma that we could tell everything
00:10:41
she had on from work were still there
00:10:43
her rings and necklaces and earrings and
00:10:46
even her eyeglasses were still on her
00:10:47
head the corner later determined that
00:10:51
mother and daughter had died within
00:10:52
hours of one another and in the same
00:10:55
manner Janice Owen and Melissa Owen had
00:10:58
both been suffocated to death
00:11:03
more questions why was Alyssa's body
00:11:07
left in plain sight on a well-traveled
00:11:09
Road but her mother's body was
00:11:11
apparently dumped in a remote creek bed
00:11:13
some 12 miles away and who could
00:11:16
negotiate the maze of back roads at
00:11:18
crisscross Howard County police have
00:11:21
plenty of theories but still no suspects
00:11:25
it's possible to get from either
00:11:28
location to their location if you know
00:11:30
the route it probably has to be somebody
00:11:34
local I just don't believe a stranger
00:11:36
could find those two locations
00:11:38
separately and just leave what worries
00:11:40
me now is they're still out there who
00:11:46
knows that they won't try it to somebody
00:11:48
else and I don't want that happening to
00:11:51
anybody I would love to say I have it or
00:11:56
that I have any clue I am a law
00:12:00
enforcement officer I am a detective my
00:12:02
job is to leave the options open until I
00:12:03
can prove the facts and I quite frankly
00:12:07
I don't know update shortly after we
00:12:17
completed the story there was a major
00:12:19
development in the case
00:12:20
police have arrested 25 year-old Angela
00:12:23
M mice and her 18 year old husband Eric
00:12:26
demise
00:12:27
each is charged with two counts of first
00:12:29
degree murder
00:12:31
the couple live in the Boonville area
00:12:34
the detectives believe they were the man
00:12:36
and woman seen lurking outside the home
00:12:38
of Janice Owen the day she and Alisa
00:12:41
disappeared

Tina creamer and Robert Miller met on
00:13:06
the job at a Lawton Oklahoma Hospital
00:13:08
where they both worked they had only
00:13:10
recently begun dating the couple plan to
00:13:17
spend a relaxing evening at Roberts
00:13:18
apartment while he prepared dinner Tina
00:13:22
took a hot shower to unwind after a long
00:13:25
day at work they were not aware they
00:13:28
were being watched
00:13:32
Roberts habit of leaving his front door
00:13:35
unlocked would prove tragic
00:13:45
robbed
00:13:54
twenty-five year old Tina creamer and 26
00:13:57
year old Robert Miller never had a
00:13:59
chance just five days before her murder
00:14:05
Tina Kramer's divorce had become final
00:14:09
Tina and David Kemp had been married for
00:14:11
five years according to Tina David began
00:14:14
stalking her shortly after they were
00:14:16
separated could there apparently
00:14:18
turbulent relationship have anything to
00:14:20
do with a double murder investigators
00:14:24
turn to those who knew the victims for
00:14:26
answers
00:14:28
Tina loved the nursing field she loved
00:14:33
helping people anybody she could help
00:14:35
she did so much volunteer work for
00:14:38
people that we didn't even know about
00:14:40
till after the fact according to some
00:14:43
Tina's life with David Kemp was
00:14:45
apparently not very fulfilling
00:14:47
I don't believe they had a marriage I
00:14:50
don't believe they had a relationship I
00:14:53
know he had hit her I know that he was
00:14:57
mentally abusive she had no self-esteem
00:15:01
left till after she left him Tina's new
00:15:07
boyfriend Robert Miller was apparently
00:15:09
providing a refreshing change from her
00:15:11
controlling ex-husband Rob was very
00:15:14
affectionate very loving he brought a
00:15:18
lot of love and laughter into her life
00:15:21
she had a lot of confidence her
00:15:24
self-esteem had just exploded after she
00:15:27
had left David she was a very beautiful
00:15:29
woman this lady was really really good
00:15:32
for him
00:15:33
you're very supportive you know made him
00:15:35
happy if this would have never happened
00:15:37
they would have been perfect for each
00:15:38
other

00:15:41
the bodies of Tina creamer and Robert
00:15:44
Miller were discovered when they failed
00:15:45
to show up for work at the hospital
00:15:47
Rob's best friend police officer Troy
00:15:50
Morris responded to the scene I made
00:15:55
entry and I saw Rob's body lying there
00:15:59
on the floor I was too emotional to
00:16:02
continue on still wanting to preserve
00:16:05
the crime scene for our detectives I
00:16:08
backed out other residents
00:16:12
and chose not to go any further after
00:16:16
exiting the residents I did what police
00:16:19
officers aren't supposed to do that
00:16:20
broke down I can't describe that feeling
00:16:27
I can't describe it you know it was it
00:16:33
was about 11:30 last night Dena's family
00:16:35
learned what happened from a news report
00:16:38
my husband and I which is her brother
00:16:41
was watching TV TV didn't say any names
00:16:45
but it showed the apartment and we just
00:16:49
knew that it was them investigators
00:16:54
processed the crime scene and news of
00:16:56
the murders began to spread many and
00:16:59
Tina creamers circle had their
00:17:00
suspicions who may have been responsible
00:17:02
for the cold-blooded murders and that
00:17:05
suspect would soon come to the attention
00:17:07
of the police the first thing that led
00:17:12
investigators to seeking the whereabouts
00:17:14
of David Kemp was the fact that he had
00:17:16
motive he had made threats to kill
00:17:19
himself and to kill Christina when they
00:17:23
split up Robert said on several
00:17:26
occasions that David Kim would come up
00:17:30
to Comanche County Memorial Hospital and
00:17:32
leave notes on Tina's car stating if I
00:17:37
can't have you that nobody can she
00:17:41
stated to me a few days before the
00:17:43
murders that it was a calm before the
00:17:45
storm because of threats and letters Rob
00:17:49
knew that Tina feared David and we would
00:17:53
stay to him y'all be careful you know
00:17:56
watch out for him lock your doors
00:18:01
when detectives attempted to locate
00:18:03
david kemp for questioning they
00:18:05
discovered he had suddenly left town the
00:18:07
day after the murders without telling
00:18:09
anyone where he was headed
00:18:13
david kemp was not considered a possible
00:18:15
suspect they speculated that when he
00:18:18
received the divorce decree officially
00:18:20
dissolving his marriage to Tina it may
00:18:22
have upset him but would it have been
00:18:25
enough to trigger the murders although
00:18:31
police had no physical evidence to
00:18:32
connect David Lee Kemp to the killings
00:18:34
they located a man who claims he sold
00:18:37
camp a 45 caliber handgun this person
00:18:41
still had in his possession some of the
00:18:42
shell casings that he had fired
00:18:44
previously through that gun he provided
00:18:46
the shell casings to us and we were
00:18:48
submitted them for forensic examination
00:18:50
those shell casings that were known to
00:18:52
be fired through that gun matched
00:18:54
identically to the shell casings that we
00:18:56
found in the crime scene
00:18:59
conclusive proof the David Kemp's gun
00:19:02
was the murder weapon an all-out manhunt
00:19:05
was launched to track down
00:19:06
David Lee Kemp but where was he
00:19:09
investigators had exhausted all leads
00:19:12
then almost two weeks after the murders
00:19:15
a lucky break arrived from California we
00:19:18
were notified by California Highway
00:19:20
Patrol that they had spotted David Kim's
00:19:23
vehicle on a highway just outside of
00:19:25

pickup truck had broken down the police
00:19:38
indicated that there was no one around
00:19:40
the vehicle we faxed them a photograph
00:19:42
of David Kim and advised them of what he
00:19:45
was wanted for then a man fitting Kemp's
00:19:48
description was spotted walking along
00:19:50
the same highway within a few minutes
00:19:53
they called us back and stated that they
00:19:55
had tried to approach mr. Kemp but that
00:19:57
he had fled on foot
00:20:10
California authorities corner David Kemp
00:20:13
in an auto wrecking yard the suspected
00:20:15
killer was trapped he began to wave the
00:20:28
gun about and indicated that he wanted
00:20:31
to kill himself he made a few demands
00:20:38
but the one demand that he did make was
00:20:41
that he talked to his mother on the
00:20:43
telephone the request was accommodated
00:20:52
then as Kemp said his goodbyes he was
00:20:55
momentarily distracted police
00:20:58
sharpshooters armed with non-lethal
00:20:59
projectiles saw their opportunity
00:21:10
David Lee Kemp was taken into custody
00:21:12
the standoff was safely over when David
00:21:18
Kemp was taken into custody in Bishop
00:21:21
California he did have a 45 caliber
00:21:23
pistol with him subsequent examination
00:21:26
indicated that that was indeed the same
00:21:28
gun that was used in the homicide
00:21:30
once extradited back to Oklahoma
00:21:33
David Kemp was assigned to the Comanche
00:21:36
County Jail Oreo to wait trial for the
00:21:38
murders of Tina creamer and Robert
00:21:40
Miller when David was caught and brought
00:21:43
back to the jail we were very happy we
00:21:48
rested at night easier we were glad he
00:21:52
was back so that justice could be served
00:22:01
six months later nine inmates of the
00:22:04
Comanche County Jail including David
00:22:06
Kemp overpowered a guard and forced
00:22:09
their way to freedom eight of the
00:22:12
escapees were quickly recaptured the
00:22:15
ninth
00:22:15
David Lee Kemp was last seen heading
00:22:18
toward Texas when David escaped we were
00:22:22
angry very angry empty feelings of it
00:22:32
being so unfair
00:22:35
it was like hearing my brother getting
00:22:37
murdered for the first time I went to
00:22:40
the jail and I stood there and waiting I
00:22:42
even went into the search parties I
00:22:44
wanted to make sure that I was going to
00:22:45
do everything I could for Rob to make
00:22:48
sure this man David Lee Kamp was caught
00:22:50
personally I don't know how David can
00:22:53
live from one day to the next he's a
00:22:56
coward for what he's done three months
00:23:02
after the escape authorities missed an
00:23:04
opportunity to take David Kemp back into
00:23:07
custody the night manager of a Las Vegas
00:23:09
motel checked to see why a guest hadn't
00:23:12
paid his rent hello manager sir hello
00:23:24
the manager found the guest sitting in
00:23:26
the bathtub covered with blood holding a
00:23:29
knife to his own stomach in what
00:23:31
appeared to be a bizarre suicide attempt
00:23:33
that had failed the man was taken to a
00:23:36
psychiatric hospital where his wounds
00:23:38
were determined to be nothing more than
00:23:40
superficial cuts the troubled man
00:23:43
received treatment and checked himself
00:23:45
out hospital authorities had no idea
00:23:49
that the man was wanted for double
00:23:50
murder the mystery man was David Lee
00:23:53
Kemp Kemp was last seen at a service
00:24:00
station on the outskirts of Las Vegas he
00:24:03
was getting into the passenger seat of a
00:24:04
black Firebird
00:24:09
it's just a never-ending nightmare
00:24:11
I want satisfaction for my brother Rob
00:24:15
and that'll be the only way he can rest
00:24:16
in peace without that he's gonna be
00:24:19
troubled a troubled soul our wounds have
00:24:24
not even gotten to heal because they're
00:24:28
David's never been tried and our wounds
00:24:32
won't heal til til David faces the
00:24:36
consequences of what he's done until
00:24:38
justice is served

June 24 2010
00:25:12
jo-ann Autry awakens at dawn her
00:25:16
daughter Tricia usually a late sleeper
00:25:18
is not in her bedroom Trish
00:25:24
a search of the entire house fails to
00:25:26
turn up any sign of the teenager as
00:25:31
Joanne's concern becomes outright panic
00:25:33
she frantically calls her daughter's
00:25:35
friends Trish's sisters tower the
00:25:38
neighborhood when none of us found her
00:25:41
then I became really frightened all of a
00:25:46
sudden there was this deep fear deep not
00:25:49
of fear in my stomach because it wasn't
00:25:52
like Trisha to do this and I knew that
00:25:58
there was something gravely wrong the
00:26:03
sudden and mysterious disappearance of
00:26:04
fifteen-year-old Trisha Autry left her
00:26:07
family devastated in the police
00:26:09
struggling for clues in many ways Trisha
00:26:12
is a typical teenage girl energetic
00:26:15
insecure and eager to be liked it was a
00:26:18
/ desire that may have led Trish on a
00:26:20
dangerous search for romance a journey
00:26:23
that possibly landed her in the clutches
00:26:25
of an Internet predator
00:26:30
like many teenagers seeking acceptance
00:26:33
Trisha found out a lesson sub painful
00:26:36
experience she was a kid that was
00:26:40
ostracized in school the children made
00:26:43
fun of her she didn't have what she
00:26:46
really wanted net wasn't a really close
00:26:48
friend someone that she could confide
00:26:50
all of her adolescent dreams in and be
00:26:53
able to share those things with so she
00:26:56
was a pretty sad child from that
00:26:58
standpoint is that she just needed that
00:27:00
one special friend
00:27:01
so mrs. ultry has there been any
00:27:03
fighting no there hasn't been police
00:27:06
immediately zeroed in on Trish's state
00:27:08
of mind as an explanation for her
00:27:10
disappearance we thought it was a
00:27:14
typical runaway juvenile case that we
00:27:17
usually get from teenagers about that
00:27:19
age that just take off they've got
00:27:23
problems at home with friends depression
00:27:28
type of things and they just leave for a
00:27:30
couple of days did you make the bed no I
00:27:33
found it like that this morning there
00:27:36
was only one problem with a runaway
00:27:38
scenario Trisha left behind virtually
00:27:42
everything she might need on away from
00:27:45
home there literally was nothing taken
00:27:50
except the clothes on her back and so we
00:27:52
became convinced that she went simply to
00:27:54
meet someone for a few minutes with the
00:27:56
idea that she'd be coming back Trisha
00:28:02
often hid from her unhappiness by
00:28:03
creating elaborate stories sometimes
00:28:07
attaining secret liaisons with much
00:28:08
bolder men two weeks before her
00:28:11
disappearance the teenager told her
00:28:13
family she had started a new story every
00:28:16
night she typed furiously often staying
00:28:19
up until the early morning hours
00:28:24
on the night she vanished Trisha was
00:28:27
again at the computer
00:28:33
her sister Brianne went to bed at 2:00
00:28:35
a.m. no one and Trish's family ever saw
00:28:39
her again for Trisha to disappear was
00:28:43
totally out of character for her and
00:28:46
what I was hoping was to find in the
00:28:50
story that she was writing some clue as
00:28:52
to what she was thinking of where her
00:28:54
frame of mind was and that's why I went
00:28:57
immediately there to begin looking
00:29:02
when Joanne turned on the computer there
00:29:05
was no story only a few pages of
00:29:08
scattered thoughts what then had Trisha
00:29:10
Autry been doing on the computer for all
00:29:12
those countless hours computer expert
00:29:17
John W Georgie examined a system and
00:29:21
made several disturbing discoveries
00:29:24
unbeknownst to her mother Trisha had
00:29:26
three separate email accounts and spent
00:29:29
an enormous amount of time in chat rooms
00:29:32
even more alarming was what occurred at
00:29:35
3:00 a.m. on the night Trisha Autry
00:29:37
disappeared everything that possibly can
00:29:40
be found and who she talked to what she
00:29:43
been doing on the computer in the recent
00:29:46
frame of time was deleted I figured
00:29:50
Trish was taught how to delete these
00:29:51
files because she did not from what I
00:29:53
was told by her mother have the
00:29:55
experience to know where these files
00:29:58
were stored and I took this as a very
00:30:00
bad sign that you know Sid obviously
00:30:03
somebody's trying to cover their tracks
00:30:04
but who could this mystery person have
00:30:07
been Trisha gave no hints to her friends
00:30:10
or family that she had met somebody
00:30:11
online
00:30:17
neighbors however notice suspicious
00:30:19
activity near the Autry home on several
00:30:22
occasions about two weeks before she
00:30:25
disappeared one of our neighbors had
00:30:27
seen her get out of a red car on the
00:30:30
corner and what he thought was some
00:30:32
suspicious behavior is the way she was
00:30:35
walking back to the house from the
00:30:37
corner as if she didn't want to be seen
00:30:38
so that was our first report of a red
00:30:40
car according to another neighbor the
00:30:45
red car appeared again at 4:00 a.m. in
00:30:47
the morning Tricia disappeared
00:30:54
the headlights from a car coming up the
00:30:57
street kind of struck the bedroom window
00:30:58
got my interest so I was looking out the
00:31:02
window and I saw kind of economy type
00:31:04
red car
00:31:09
young man got out the car and oh he was
00:31:12
nervous first thing that popped in my
00:31:14
mind Oh somebody's sneaking out of the
00:31:16
house and after a few minutes a lady was
00:31:20
coming down the street and they walked
00:31:25
to the car together and went on their
00:31:26
merry way I believe that she could be
00:31:31
seduced into thinking she found someone
00:31:33
who needed her and could love her I
00:31:39
think that she was bait good bait for a
00:31:44
predator two hours after Trisha was seen
00:31:49
getting into the red car
00:31:51
glenda trip a local convenience store
00:31:53
employee witnessed a strange incident
00:31:58
are you all right honey yeah I'm okay
00:32:02
thing she seemed really apprehensive and
00:32:06
nervous and she never acted like she was
00:32:08
wanting to buy anything but she kept
00:32:10
kind of stretching her little head and
00:32:11
looking out the window like she was
00:32:13
looking for someone or watching for
00:32:15
someone I've seen her in in and about
00:32:19
the neighborhood so I knew Trisha
00:32:23
I have no doubt in my mind that it was
00:32:26
Trisha after spending 20 minutes in the
00:32:29
store and making no purchases Trisha
00:32:32
vanished over the next two months the
00:32:38
police and the Autry's posted missing
00:32:40
posters in the surrounding communities
00:32:43
a man in Bountiful Utah saw one of the
00:32:47
Flyers and immediately contacted the
00:32:49
authorities what Jerry start up
00:32:55
witnessed would cast an entirely new and
00:32:57
unsettling light on the case I had gone
00:33:03
into the supermarket to do some shopping
00:33:06
I saw coming through the door this young
00:33:10
lady followed by another lady and a
00:33:13
gentleman lagging behind a little bit to
00:33:16
the right of them the man matched the
00:33:21
description of the individual who was
00:33:22
seen picking up Trisha from her home
00:33:25
both he and the woman never let the girl
00:33:28
out of their sight and constantly
00:33:30
berated her in hushed tones and I looked
00:33:34
a little bit closer and saw that her her
00:33:36
eyes were partially closed and her face
00:33:40
was a little puffy not my goodness
00:33:42
this young lady's Pratt's been beaten or
00:33:45
abused I thought she was drugged
00:33:49
she had the appearance of being drugged
00:33:52
was it Trisha yes how confident am i
00:33:55
that that was her 100% I knew I know
00:33:59
beyond a shadow of a doubt that was her
00:34:01
that was her my feeling right now is
00:34:04
she's probably being kept from coming
00:34:07
back either by force or by somebody
00:34:10
keeping her sedated on drugs or
00:34:12
something that wants to keep her I think
00:34:16
this is an abduction type of situation I
00:34:19
don't think it's a typical runaway
00:34:22
for me as a mother the greatest thing is
00:34:24
this is a tiny person that I I loved and
00:34:28
nurtured and worried about and I can no
00:34:32
longer protect her I don't know where
00:34:33
she is when I drive through town and I
00:34:39
see things that we would have been
00:34:41
sharing together or activities come up
00:34:44
that we commonly did together as a
00:34:46
family
00:34:49
and she's not there and there's no I
00:34:52
mean it's sometimes that just the the
00:34:54
grief just washes over you and it takes
00:34:57
your breath away
00:34:59
[Music]
00:35:04
since we filmed the story of Trisha
00:35:06
Autry's disappearance investigators from
00:35:09
the Sheriff's Department and Logan Utah
00:35:11
have made a tragic discovery Trish's
00:35:13
case is no longer classified as out of a
00:35:15
missing person sadly it is now a
00:35:18
homicide and a suspect is in custody
00:35:24
six months after Trisha's disappearance
00:35:26
cash County sheriff's deputies became
00:35:29
suspicious about the activities of Kody
00:35:31
Lynn Nielsen a maintenance man working
00:35:36
for a Wildlife Research Facility in
00:35:38
Millville Utah miles from the home of
00:35:41
Trisha Autry near the time of Trisha's
00:35:44
disappearance Nielsen had been observed
00:35:47
using a backhoe on facility property to
00:35:50
dig deep trenches and refill them for no
00:35:52
apparent reason
00:35:55
we contacted a cadaver dog team out of
00:35:58
Duchene County here in Utah and we
00:36:01
brought the dogs up to this site and
00:36:03
they they were real interested and they
00:36:06
they hit what they called hit on this
00:36:09
one area right here that we knew that
00:36:11
our suspect had been digging and the
00:36:14
dogs hit on this several times about
00:36:16
seven different dogs hit on this
00:36:21
Sheriff's Department investigators began
00:36:24
to dig with her own backhoe at the
00:36:26
location suggested by the dogs when we
00:36:30
got to about ten feet we found a human
00:36:33
jawbone which later was determined to be
00:36:36
Trisha Autry's it was just nothing short
00:36:40
of a miracle that we found that piece of
00:36:42
evidence in that big of a hole in other
00:36:47
trenches sheriff's deputies found more
00:36:49
of Trish's remains and clothing some of
00:36:52
which had been burned
00:36:57
Patricia's mother the news of the
00:36:59
discovery brought great pain but also a
00:37:02
sense of relief primarily because of our
00:37:06
faith we know where she is now where
00:37:09
before we wondered we would lie awake
00:37:11
together at night and worry about
00:37:13
whether she was in the cold or whether
00:37:16
someone was hurting her it's probably
00:37:20
been very agony zhing but also very
00:37:23
validating because we knew that she did
00:37:27
not run away

00:37:49
Griese Hospital Richmond Virginia on
00:37:52
february 9th 1965 a shadowy figure
00:37:55
holding a tiny infant slips silently
00:37:57
down the hall the child had been
00:38:01
diagnosed with congenital glaucoma rare
00:38:05
condition present at birth that leads to
00:38:07
complete blindness and my surgery is
00:38:09
performed within the first few months of
00:38:11
life the woman who said her name was
00:38:16
Mary Carson gave the child's name is Kim
00:38:18
her age two and a half months their
00:38:23
supervisor Billy Updike held the little
00:38:25
girl while Mary completed admission
00:38:27
papers however Billy was stunned by what
00:38:32
she heard next we talked for a minute
00:38:36
and then she said I've got to go now
00:38:39
I'll be back tomorrow Mary told Billy
00:38:43
she had two older children at home that
00:38:45
couldn't be left alone she said you
00:38:47
would return first thing in the morning
00:38:50
she seemed very calm she didn't display
00:38:54
an in motion at all and I would have
00:38:57
been crying heartbroken if I didn't
00:39:00
leave my baby
00:39:02
perhaps it affected Mary far more than
00:39:05
she let on but Billy would never know
00:39:07
when she returned to work the next day
00:39:10
she was shocked to learn that Mary had
00:39:11
failed to show up for her baby's
00:39:13
operation I'll notify administration
00:39:18
without her doctors could not perform
00:39:21
the surgery
00:39:23
desperate hospital administrator Douglas
00:39:26
pace attempted to track Mary down
00:39:28
himself I went out to the address
00:39:32
looking for the mother and I found a
00:39:35
vacant lot
00:39:36
all the houses had been demolished and
00:39:38
the block was completely vacant and I
00:39:40
was stunned and shocked and made me feel
00:39:45
kind of sad that I realized then we had
00:39:48
a baby on our hands without a parent but
00:39:52
time running out Douglas pace convinced
00:39:54
the judge to issue a court order
00:39:56
allowing doctors to perform the surgery
00:39:58
the operation was considered a success
00:40:01
but Kim's eyesight would never be normal
00:40:05
an article in the February 11th 1965
00:40:08
edition of the Richmond Times generated
00:40:10
an outpouring of sympathy donations and
00:40:12
adoption enquiries but the coverage
00:40:15
failed to turn up one solid clue as to
00:40:17
who would abandon baby Kim a police
00:40:20
investigation also led Nova 18 months
00:40:26
numerous operations as several foster
00:40:28
homes later another report in The Times
00:40:30
caught the eye of local residents
00:40:31
Richard and Sandra Butler Sandra's
00:40:34
husband Richard was especially taken by
00:40:37
the heart-wrenching story this is gonna
00:40:40
be my baby this is what he said end of
00:40:44
discussion
00:40:45
he thinks we gonna do this I'll go along
00:40:48
with him

we made a man up from start we wanted on

we got him
00:40:57
Sandra and Richard opened their home in
00:40:59
their hearts to the toddler they named
00:41:01
Kimberly dawn Kim was treated exactly
00:41:04
like the butler's two biological
00:41:06
children but her poor eyesight made life
00:41:09
a constant struggle I do remember being
00:41:13
very angry being very frustrated about
00:41:17
not being able to go and do a lot of
00:41:20
things that other children could do
00:41:21
which was hard because on one hand they
00:41:24
wanted me to grow up very normal but yet
00:41:26
I couldn't do all the normal things
00:41:29
despite her disability
00:41:31
Kim graduated from high school attended
00:41:33
college and went to work as a teacher in
00:41:37
1989 she married Michael Smith the
00:41:39
deputy sheriff over the years Kim showed
00:41:43
little interest in learning about her
00:41:44
birth parents until she became a parent
00:41:47
herself
00:41:48
once I became a mom and had two children
00:41:52
and could tell you to this day every
00:41:55
moment about the day they were born the
00:41:58
time how much they weighed their
00:42:01
birthdates I started thinking I don't
00:42:02
know any of those things about me but it
00:42:06
was more than curiosity that had Kim to
00:42:08
search for her identity as a baby her
00:42:12
son Tyler had suffered from repeated
00:42:14
bouts of respiratory infections doctors
00:42:17
feared that cause was genetic that was
00:42:20
kind of like the straw that broke the
00:42:22
camel's back after going to several
00:42:24
doctors and being able to tell anything
00:42:26
they needed to know about Mike side of
00:42:28
the family that was kind of what made me
00:42:30
decide that it was time for me to start
00:42:33
a search if I could just find those
00:42:35
answers to all those questions I have
00:42:37
and most importantly find the medical
00:42:40
history for my children and I that
00:42:42
that's what I'm in search of that's what
00:42:45
I hope to gain Kim is understandably
00:42:48
concerned for the health of her children
00:42:50
yet she harbors no anger against her
00:42:52
birth mother we always were led to
00:42:55
believe that she left me because maybe
00:42:59
she couldn't afford the medical
00:43:00
treatment I would I would need having
00:43:02
congenital glaucoma I can't be angry at
00:43:06
her about that she could have not taken
00:43:08
me to the hospital she could have not
00:43:10
registered me for the surgery therefore
00:43:12
I might not have any sight today
