00:02:04
on a warm spring day in 1967 Mary Eureka
00:02:08
Houston Texas was on her way to visit
00:02:10
her sister Patton as she did nearly
00:02:12
every day suddenly Mary was overcome by
00:02:15
a feeling of dread further down the road
00:02:20
I got the faster I would drive because
00:02:22
it was just like I could feel it in my
00:02:26
bones I knew something was wrong but I
00:02:27
couldn't pinpoint it and I pulled into
00:02:33
the driveway and her little boy Eugene
00:02:36
he was in the doorway the door might
00:02:39
open where's your mommy I knew then that
00:02:41
something was wrong because that didn't
00:02:44
allow the children out by theirselves at
00:02:47
all and then I found Sheila in the
00:02:51
kitchen she had pulled a chair up to the
00:02:54
kitchen sink and that turned the water
00:02:56
on and she was just having a field day
00:03:02
with the water in the dishes the water
00:03:05
was all over the counters and went all
00:03:07
in the floor and I said Sheila where's
00:03:09
mama where's mama
00:03:11
Oh Mama's asleep

00:03:16
Patricia I went into the bedroom and I
00:03:21
saw Pat Lee and halfway on the bed and
00:03:23
then fall and I tried to waken her and I
00:03:27
could not break him off at the hospital
00:03:42
doctors discovered that an aneurysm was
00:03:44
blocking the blood flow to Pat's brain
00:03:46
serves you to correct the condition was
00:03:49
risky an artery and her neck had to be
00:03:51
clamped off the operation saved Pat's
00:03:54
life but there was an unexpected
00:03:56
complication I went back to see her the
00:04:01
next day and she would look at me as if
00:04:04
were like well who are you what are you
00:04:06
doing here she didn't know who I was she
00:04:10
didn't know her husband how you feeling
00:04:13
you feel better now
00:04:16
she didn't know anything everything was
00:04:19
gone she woke up into a different world
00:04:22
than what she went to sleep in Pat did
00:04:26
not recognize her children at all she
00:04:30
looked at me and she says who are they
00:04:33
I said bad they are your children
00:04:37
Jean Sheila then your mom you look
00:04:41
pretty today how do you remember these
00:04:47
pretty babies don't Pat had to be taught
00:04:56
everything again even how to eat it was
00:04:59
all too much for her husband he filed
00:05:02
for divorce and was granted custody of
00:05:04
the children
00:05:04
in November of 1968 a woman who had been
00:05:08
hired look after Pat called Mary at work
00:05:11
Pat had disappeared
00:05:15
I immediately on the phone up and went
00:05:19
home and started searching for I went
00:05:23
everywhere I had really hoped that she
00:05:26
was still in the Houston area six weeks
00:05:30
later Pat was picked up for vagrancy
00:05:32
nearly 700 miles away in Alabama where
00:05:36
she and Mary had lived when they were
00:05:37
young they had been papers in her purse
00:05:42
stating who she was because she didn't
00:05:44
know who she was for anything I don't
00:05:47
have that night and I drove all night
00:05:48
and the next day you'll get in victory
00:05:51
do you remember how you got all the way
00:05:53
to Alabama we were so worried about you
00:06:01
so worried about this I'm sorry
00:06:04
I'm just glad you're all right I'm just
00:06:07
glad you're all right are you ready to
00:06:08
go home yes Pat's memory never fully
00:06:12
returned but eventually her life took on
00:06:14
a semblance of normality had even
00:06:17
attracted a suitor Detroit Carleton a
00:06:19
construction worker the first time I met
00:06:26
Pat I went by Nathan in Mary's house her
00:06:31
sister and brother-in-law and I walked
00:06:35
in and there was Pat hey man I want to
00:06:39
do see them a sister-in-law
00:06:42

00:06:45
Patricia this is my good printer Oh
00:06:46

00:06:47

00:06:54
mark about it being recess in heaven
00:06:56
what angels running around there and
00:06:58
next thing you know we were dating would
00:07:03
you like something to drink
00:07:04
Troy lemonade sure that's a woman chair
00:07:08
buddy right here next an angel it was a
00:07:14
magnetism between us when I first met
00:07:19
Pat I was unaware of totally of any
00:07:22
medical problems when I was made aware
00:07:26
of the fact that she had these problems
00:07:29
it didn't it didn't decrease my feelings
00:07:33
for her not in any way if anything they
00:07:37
increased through concerned Pat and Troy
00:07:41
Carlton were married on January 3rd 1969
00:07:45
Troy urged Pat to fight for custody of
00:07:48
her children and a court hearing was
00:07:50
scheduled for that May
00:07:54
seven days before the hearing Troy came
00:07:57
home for lunch at noon as he did every
00:07:59
day then on the dining table was her
00:08:12
purse or wallet keys the money she had
00:08:16
in her purse
00:08:17
every none of her clothes were gone pat
00:08:20
was gone finally I called Mary her
00:08:24
sister she said I haven't seen Pat I
00:08:27
said well I haven't either since early
00:08:29
this morning I went to the shop went to
00:08:32
the bank went to pay on the furniture
00:08:34
and when I got back she's gone I haven't
00:08:36
seen her in a hide over at which time
00:08:38
Mary responded Oh Lord I've said what
00:08:40
you mean Oh Lord
00:08:41
she said I'll bet Pat walked off I said
00:08:45
what in the hell are you talking about
00:08:48
Pat walked off three weeks of desperate
00:08:54
searching went by
00:08:55
finally Pat was sighted on the other
00:08:57
side of Houston
00:08:59
Troy immediately drove to pick her up
00:09:02
[Music]
00:09:08

00:09:13
oh they're sweet are you mad no it's me
00:09:17
you wanna go home yes
00:09:20
get in the truck
00:09:24
I don't have any idea where she ever
00:09:31
went I don't have any idea why she went
00:09:38
I don't know what she did while she was
00:09:43
gone
00:09:44
she never discussed it period
00:09:47
[Music]
00:09:56
Troi assume pets disappearance was an
00:09:59
isolated episode but he could not have
00:10:01
been more wrong Pat would wander off
00:10:04
without explanation seven more times
00:10:06
within the next year the last time Pat
00:10:11
left was on the 14th day of January of
00:10:13
1971 one year and 11 days after we got
00:10:18
married in Conroe Texas she had no
00:10:21
identification with her know anything so
00:10:26
I know that this wasn't a planned thing
00:10:29
this wasn't a put-on or anything like of
00:10:34
that nature okay
00:10:38
Patricia hi want to come with me I'll go
00:10:42
ahead and make that call for you for 13
00:10:44
months Pat seemed to have dropped off
00:10:46
the face of the earth then she surfaced
00:10:48
in San Diego California evidently her
00:10:51
memory had returned at least in part she
00:10:54
gave a welfare worker her maiden name as
00:10:56
well as her birthplace its hello I'm
00:11:01
trying to locate the family of it along
00:11:04
fair worker did find one of Pat's aunts
00:11:06
in Birmingham but she believed Pat was
00:11:09
still in Houston and did nothing to
00:11:10
follow up that was the last time anybody
00:11:13
ever saw or heard from Pat Carl Pat has
00:11:20
now been missing for more than 22 years
00:11:22
eventually Troy Carlton remarried but
00:11:25
with his current wife support he is
00:11:27
doing everything he can to wade in the
00:11:28
search
00:11:29
[Music]
00:11:30
I couldn't live with Pat again I'm
00:11:36
married for 17 and a half years now I've
00:11:41
raised two stepchildren one of my own
00:11:47
I wouldn't trade what of God for
00:11:49
anything in the world but I would like
00:11:52
to find out that pet his life healthy
00:11:57
and I'd like to see her have the
00:12:00
happiness that she deserves she has been
00:12:05
gone a long time but I don't never quit
00:12:08
believing that she's out there somewhere
00:12:11
she's with somebody I've got to believe
00:12:14
that she is with somebody and they know
00:12:18
that she has a problem and I'm hoping
00:12:22
and praying that somebody that has been
00:12:23
good to her to take care of her
00:12:27
that's all that I can ask for
00:12:33
[Music]
00:12:43
next authorities need your help to solve
00:12:46
the brutal murder of a young cab driver
00:13:01
nestled in the snow-capped Canadian
00:13:03
Rockies is the popular resort town of
00:13:05
Banff Alberta Canada visitors from
00:13:08
around the world come to this idyllic
00:13:10
setting to bask in the natural
00:13:12
surroundings and enjoy the peaceful
00:13:13
friendly atmosphere it was just these
00:13:17
quantities that appealed a 21 year old
00:13:19
Lucie Turmel of La Vie Quebec Canada
00:13:23
Lucy moved to Banff in the fall of 1987
00:13:26
and found work as a part-time cab driver
00:13:30
Lucy came here for Paradise and Banff
00:13:33
was known as the paradise town
00:13:35
everything was great for the people of
00:13:37
the place the way of life everything was
00:13:42
grateful Lucy may 17th 1990 was a
00:13:47
typical night on the job for Lucie
00:13:49
Turmel
00:13:49
she logged in at 8:00 p.m. and spent
00:13:52
much of the evening working the downtown
00:13:54
tourist trade as the end of her shift
00:13:56
approached she had taken in just over a
00:13:59
hundred dollars at 1:40 a.m. Lucy
00:14:04
arrived at the works nightclub on Spray
00:14:06
Avenue hoping to pick up one last fare
00:14:08
there she talked to another cab driver
00:14:11
Larry laundry it was about 1:30 20 to
00:14:19
2:00 in the morning had a little
00:14:21
conversation at which time I had looked
00:14:23
out my window to take a look at them who
00:14:26
was a gentleman and two girls just
00:14:29
seemed normal
00:14:31
yeah I got a three four six hundred
00:14:35
Lucy called in her destination to the
00:14:38
dispatcher
00:14:39
Bruce fairy n check and drove away I
00:14:45
done a few more affairs at which time I
00:14:48
had asked Bruce if Lucy had phoned in
00:14:52
and he said no I haven't heard from her
00:14:54
and this was about 12 minutes later we
00:14:57
started asking for her on the radio at
00:14:59
which time she did not answer
00:15:01
and after about 20 minutes finally
00:15:03
decided to look for Larry drove to
00:15:08
Lucy's last reported destination and
00:15:10
then passed her house less than a block
00:15:13
away
00:15:13
he spotted Lucy's cab Lucy was not
00:15:16
driving such a fan had asked Bruce right
00:15:19
away I said there are you in front of me
00:15:20
Bruce he said no and right away he
00:15:24
replied while the guy stoled in the cab
00:15:25
but at the same time at the bad feeling
00:15:28
you know where was Lucia how come she
00:15:29
hasn't phoned us and said her cab has
00:15:31
been stolen and I told him I said well I
00:15:34
got the guy
00:15:35
[Music]

00:15:46

00:15:49
exactly
00:15:49
[Music]
00:15:51
Larry tailed a stolen cab for two miles
00:15:54
at speeds of up to 80 miles an hour
00:15:58
finally he cornered the cab on a
00:16:00
dead-end street
00:16:05
[Music]
00:16:08
Larry caught a brief glimpse of the
00:16:11
driver who then disappeared into the
00:16:13
woods at virtually that same moment
00:16:26
police were responding to a report of a
00:16:28
body lying in the middle of squirrel
00:16:30
Street two miles away Lucie Turmel was
00:16:35
dead she had been stabbed repeatedly in
00:16:38
the neck it was the first murder that
00:16:44
had occurred here in 20 years there
00:16:46
hasn't been anything like it since and
00:16:49
it's it's a shock to the people that
00:16:51
live here that a crime like this could
00:16:53
occur in a place like Bath we were
00:16:59
missing her wallet and her yellow jacket
00:17:02
which she'd been wearing the wallet was
00:17:03
subsequently recovered our best
00:17:05
information is that robbery was the
00:17:07
motive for this murder
00:17:09
she had probably about a hundred dollars
00:17:12
in taxi fares in the cap when the
00:17:14
killing occurred and that money is
00:17:16
missing when police examined Lucy's cab
00:17:21
they found blood spattered on the
00:17:23
dashboard front seat and steering wheel
00:17:26
oddly lab tests would determine that
00:17:29
none of the blood was Lucy's we're
00:17:33
surmising that the attack on her took
00:17:35
place outside the taxi and that the
00:17:37
attacker somehow cut himself during the
00:17:39
attack and bled inside the taxi while he
00:17:42
occupied it for the 20 or 25 minutes
00:17:44
after the offense occurred what we don't
00:17:47
know is whether the person who killed
00:17:50
her was her last fare may have been in
00:17:52
the taxi with her and forced her to get
00:17:54
out or it also could have been somebody
00:17:56
who flagged her down and dragged her out
00:17:58
of the taxi and then stabbed her
00:18:04
- thanks 18 hours after Lucie Turmel was
00:18:08
killed the murder weapon was found in
00:18:10
the driveway of a local resident police
00:18:13
learned that it had been stolen from a
00:18:15
hotel employee leading them to believe
00:18:17
that the killer may have been from out
00:18:19
of town we've interviewed a lot of
00:18:23
people we did neighborhood inquiries we
00:18:26
were unable to find anybody who had seen
00:18:28
or heard anything at the time of Lucy's
00:18:31
death that is kind of unusual because at
00:18:35
that time a morning there's usually
00:18:36
people out on the street but it's
00:18:39
unfortunate but that's what we're stuck
00:18:41
with for Lucie Turmel the search for a
00:18:46
better life had ended in tragedy all for
00:18:49
$100 for Lucy's friends and family the
00:18:53
search for answers continues when we
00:18:58
learned that Lucy died took us awhile to
00:19:01
realize that it was true we're just
00:19:05
living a nightmare that's all and it's
00:19:10
been two years now
00:19:11
and we're trying to get some answers and
00:19:14
we're hoping that somebody have the
00:19:17
answer do something about it

00:19:37
when we return a land search for his
00:19:40
late wife's family could help identify a
00:19:42
mysterious illness July 1976 two young
00:19:59
servicemen both stationed at Fort Gordon
00:20:01
Georgia were taking in the Richmond
00:20:02
County Fair one of them Darryl Tacey met
00:20:06
a woman who called herself Georgia and
00:20:08
Boyd
00:20:11
what attracted me to George I think was
00:20:14
the dark Heron real dark eyes it was
00:20:21
kind of like a mystery you know I wanted
00:20:23
to know who she was
00:20:25
meet her talk with her she was just
00:20:29
interesting Georgia told Darryl that her
00:20:34
father was a Cherokee Indian that she
00:20:36
was born on a reservation in North
00:20:37
Carolina she said most people called her
00:20:40
Jerry not Georgia Daryl TC fell
00:20:45
head-over-heels in love over the next
00:20:48
two and a half years until Georgia's
00:20:50
untimely death Daryl would discover that
00:20:52
she was a woman of mystery vague about
00:20:54
her past and her identity today nearly
00:20:57
14 years later Daryl hopes someone in
00:21:00
our audience can help him find the truth
00:21:02
about Georgia and Boyd
00:21:06
on the night after they met Dale was
00:21:08
surprised to discover that Georgia
00:21:10
worked at a go-go bar in Augusta three
00:21:12
miles from Fort Gordon Darryl was soon
00:21:15
spending every free moment at the bar
00:21:16
watching Georgia dance Georgia told
00:21:25
Darryl she was divorced she and her two
00:21:27
young daughters Sally and Angel lived
00:21:29
with an older woman Georgia called
00:21:31
granny but who down would later learn
00:21:33
was not a blood relative within two
00:21:43
weeks George and her daughters moved
00:21:45
into Daryl's house it wasn't long before
00:21:48
Dale noticed that Georgia was paranoid
00:21:50
about something or someone at home she
00:21:55
kept the curtains tightly closed even
00:21:57
during the day she refused to answer the
00:21:59
phone
00:22:00
except when Daryl called using a
00:22:02
pre-arranged sequence of rings Georgia
00:22:05
finally admitted that she was afraid her
00:22:07
ex-husband would try to kidnap the
00:22:09
children a month after they had moved in
00:22:12
together
00:22:13
Daryl arrived at the club one night to
00:22:15
find Georgia talking to two men in suits
00:22:17
and ties clearly not regular customers
00:22:20
[Music]
00:22:23
I asked her who they were and she said
00:22:26
they're nobody really she says don't
00:22:29
worry about it and that was he how we
00:22:32
just dropped it from there because I
00:22:33
trusted her
00:22:36
two weeks later three members of The
00:22:38
Devil's disciples an outlaw motorcycle
00:22:40
gang showed up at the club she was
00:22:44
scared
00:22:45
and I asked her what's wrong and she
00:22:48
said I used to run with the disciples in
00:22:50
Atlanta and they're here to take me back
00:22:56
maybe take you away from me
00:22:59
that same night George and Derald left
00:23:02
the club the three motorcycle gang
00:23:04
members were waiting

[Music]
00:23:50
when a police car began to give pursuit
00:23:53
Darryl fishtailed onto a side street the
00:23:55
van sped away
00:23:58
Georgia never offered any further
00:24:00
explanation about the devil's disciples
00:24:05
she would not say anything what she was
00:24:08
really doing with them she did not say
00:24:10
if any of these for the father of the
00:24:12
children or anything and she just really
00:24:15
did not want to talk about it and if she
00:24:18
didn't want to talk about it she
00:24:19
wouldn't say a word at all in January of
00:24:24
1977 the army reassigned Darryl to Fort
00:24:27
Ord across the country in Northern
00:24:29
California on the trip west he and
00:24:32
Georgia were married no but you can get
00:24:41
the door George and Derald arrived at
00:24:46
Fort Ord in February of 1977 Georgia was
00:24:49
pregnant and has seemed that their
00:24:51
troubles were far behind them however a
00:24:57
few months later someone began harassing
00:25:00
Georgia usually when Gerald worked late
00:25:07
[Music]
00:25:16

00:25:19
Gerald was at home

checked around the house and they could
00:25:50
find anything or anybody
00:25:56
[Music]
00:25:58
several days later the intruder left one
00:26:00
final calling card painted on the back
00:26:03
door was a warning off get you Jett
00:26:06
Darren thought Jett like Jerry might be
00:26:09
one of George's nicknames but she denied
00:26:11
it she told me that she would tell me
00:26:15
everything about her past at a later
00:26:20
date she just did not want me to know a
00:26:24
lot of things I couldn't hurt me and she
00:26:29
asked me if anything ever happened to
00:26:30
her - please take care of her children
00:26:33
and I said I would on August 10th 1977
00:26:40
Georgia gave birth to a son
00:26:42
she suffered complications and Derald
00:26:44
was granted a hardship discharge they
00:26:47
moved back to his hometown in Michigan
00:26:49
where Georgia became pregnant again
00:26:51
after their second son was born she
00:26:54
began to have violet headaches Jerry
00:26:59
Jerry doctor said she gotta start
00:27:01
getting up okay you guys I'll get up
00:27:02
walking around well after a couple of
00:27:08
weeks of this I called an ambulance
00:27:09
because she could not get up to even go
00:27:12
to the bathroom anymore the ambulance
00:27:15
came and picked her up and took her to
00:27:16
the hospital
00:27:20
[Music]
00:27:29
Georgia lapsed into a coma the diagnosis
00:27:32
of brain aneurysm
00:27:33
technically Georgia was brain dead agent
00:27:41
yo we've done all we can for test today
00:27:44
didn't show any indication of change why
00:27:48
don't you spend some time with her
00:27:50
and come see me in my office no chance
00:27:54
I don't think so down
00:28:08
I was informed by the doctor that I can
00:28:14
tell them to shut the Machine off
00:28:16
[Music]
00:28:23
Georgia and boy Tacey was only 22 years
00:28:26
old when she died she left behind two
00:28:29
daughters from her first marriage two
00:28:31
young sons from her marriage to Darin
00:28:33
and a mysterious legacy of unanswered
00:28:35
questions just after Jerry died I tried
00:28:41
to contact some family of hers I called
00:28:46
information to get the number to her
00:28:48
father they gave me a number and I
00:28:51
called and the gentleman that answered
00:28:55
said I don't know who you're talking
00:28:56
about
00:28:56
I have no daughters I have no children
00:28:58
at all I'm sorry [ __ ] yeah Daryl says he
00:29:05
could never get a response from a
00:29:06
Cherokee Nation about Georgia or her
00:29:08
father he was also unable to locate her
00:29:11
mother through the sketchy information
00:29:12
Georgia had given him
00:29:14
it appeared that Georgia's identity had
00:29:16
died with her Gerald returned to Augusta
00:29:24
hoping to unravel the mystery of
00:29:26
Georgia's life oh sorry man I don't know
00:29:30
any Georgia she's never worked here I'm
00:29:31
busy okay Ryan Hey look pal just at the
00:29:37
go-go Club the manager acted as if he
00:29:39
had never heard of Georgia
00:29:45
[Music]
00:29:47
I talked to a couple other dancers about
00:29:51
her that knew her from before and one of
00:29:55
the girls said just drop it let it go
00:29:58
and leave town get out
00:30:01
I said why she said you don't want to
00:30:04
know anything just drop it and get away
00:30:09
derald convinced a local TV station to
00:30:11
broadcast this picture of Georgia over a
00:30:14
period of 24 hours however the picture
00:30:16
was shown only once under last why he
00:30:19
said he was told once again forget about
00:30:22
her and leave town
00:30:25
according to Darren the Augusta police
00:30:28
replied to his enquiries in the same
00:30:29
evasive manner nobody I talked to would
00:30:35
give me any information
00:30:37
everybody said leave Leave so I was
00:30:40
running low on money from motel rooms
00:30:42
and eating and everything and I had to
00:30:44
leave and I left Augusta not knowing any
00:30:47
more than when I left Michigan to go
00:30:49
there nearly 14 years have passed since
00:30:55
Georgia's death her daughters are now
00:30:57
grown although derald has remarried
00:30:59
neither he nor Georgia's children have
00:31:01
been able to close an earlier chapter of
00:31:04
their lives I don't care about what she
00:31:09
did in her past I'm not looking to find
00:31:12
out what she had done or anything else I
00:31:15
won't know who she is and I want to know
00:31:18
her side of the family so I can tell
00:31:20
them this lady has died because as far
00:31:23
as I know nobody knows
00:31:30
Update Derald Tacy's long search is
00:31:33
finally over on the night of our
00:31:36
broadcast a viewer called with the news
00:31:38
at Georgia and boy's real name was Edith
00:31:41
Geraldine John's more a few days later
00:31:46
Daryl his stepdaughter Sally and angel
00:31:49
and their children rendezvous in
00:31:51
Savannah Georgia anxiously awaiting a
00:31:54
reunion with Edith family
00:31:56
I was nervous about meeting these people
00:32:01
I didn't know how they would take this I
00:32:04
figured there'd be tears and so I was
00:32:08
really leery scared I guess you could
00:32:11
call it but after I met him there what
00:32:14
are the tears but I felt relief finally
00:32:18
to tell them she had passed away the
00:32:24
reunion was a poignant mix of sadness
00:32:26
and joy perhaps the happiest moment was
00:32:30
when Sally and Angel met their natural
00:32:32
father Gary more the first time since
00:32:35
they were very young children nearly 14
00:32:37
years ago it was and still is unreal I
00:32:42
mean it's hard to comprehend all this is
00:32:44
happening
00:32:44
I found my $2 acts 15 years plus I'm a
00:32:49
grandfather twice over that still takes
00:32:51
a little getting used to
00:32:54
I'm too young a great grandfather but I
00:32:57
reckon I'll have to accept it Sally and
00:33:02
Angel received an even bigger surprise
00:33:04
when they learned that their mother had
00:33:06
two other children from a previous
00:33:07
marriage
00:33:08
Eugene and runner by bringing together
00:33:11
Sally and Angel were their blood
00:33:13
relatives
00:33:14
Darrell felt he had finally fulfilled
00:33:16
his obligation to his late life we're
00:33:20
gonna sit down and we're gonna talk with
00:33:22
with the family and we may get together
00:33:26
and just get to know each other I think
00:33:33
that's the first thing we have to 14
00:33:35
years a long time next a sheriff in
00:33:50
Florida is seeking clues to the identity
00:33:51
of a murder victim
00:33:54
[Music]
00:34:04
Lake panas off key lies in the heart of
00:34:07
the vast Florida wetlands 50 miles
00:34:09
northwest of Orlando it is a steamy
00:34:12
mysterious quagmire which covers 27
00:34:15
square miles crossing the Lakes Eastern
00:34:19
Shore and Sumter County is interstate 75
00:34:21
a major highway connecting Florida with
00:34:24
the rest of the southeast On February
00:34:29
19th 1971 two teenagers were hitchhiking
00:34:33
along the interstate heading north from
00:34:35
Tampa while crossing the narrow Lake
00:34:41
panas off Key Bridge they noticed the
00:34:43
outline of a human form in the shallow
00:34:45
murky water
00:34:48
Hey look at that
00:34:54
within an hour authorities have been
00:34:57
called to retrieve the badly decomposed
00:34:59
body of a young woman she appeared to
00:35:01
have been strangled a man sized 36 belt
00:35:04
was still wrapped around her throat
00:35:09
authorities determined that the woman
00:35:11
may have been in her late teens or early
00:35:13
twenties she carried no identification
00:35:15
and had been dead for approximately
00:35:17
three weeks investigators were unable to
00:35:23
find the killer or determine the woman's
00:35:25
identity tragically no one ever came
00:35:28
forward to claim her body six months
00:35:34
passed the young woman was laid to rest
00:35:36
beneath a small metal marker which
00:35:38
simply read Jane Doe 1971
00:35:42
[Music]
00:35:44
ten years later Jamie Adams became the
00:35:47
sheriff of Sumpter County he began to
00:35:50
review the department's unsolved cases
00:35:52
and was particularly disturbed by the
00:35:54
murder of the young woman it bothered me
00:35:58
the fact that this young girl had never
00:36:00
been identified and being a daddy and a
00:36:04
granddaddy I just you know I just
00:36:05
couldn't couldn't accept the fact that
00:36:08
there's somebody out there couldn't come
00:36:11
forward and let us know who this young
00:36:12
girl was it's something that I had to do
00:36:14
and I just feel deeply their submission
00:36:17
and I've got to accomplish each year law
00:36:21
enforcement is faced with thousands of
00:36:23
cases similar to the murder mystery in
00:36:25
Florida but some are so senseless and
00:36:28
heart-wrenching the investigation will
00:36:30
often turn into a personal crusade for
00:36:33
the past decade
00:36:34
sheriff Jamie Adams has engaged the
00:36:36
foremost experts in the country to find
00:36:38
out everything he possibly can about the
00:36:40
young woman he calls little miss panis
00:36:43
off key a year after he took office
00:36:47
sheriff Adams officially reopened the
00:36:49
case he obtained a court order to have
00:36:52
the body exhumed dr. William maples one
00:36:58
of the nation's foremost forensic
00:36:59
anthropologist was brought in to assist
00:37:02
in the new investigation the
00:37:06
re-examination of the remains ordered by
00:37:08
sheriff Adams gave us a piece of
00:37:10
information that is crucial something
00:37:13
that wouldn't have been known had it not
00:37:15
been for sheriff Adams and that was that
00:37:17
she had Arthur Pedic surgery to her
00:37:20
right ankle the surgery done to the
00:37:23
right ankle of this young woman was
00:37:25
required because of instability in that
00:37:27
ankle this was done by an orthopedic
00:37:30
surgeon who wound a tendon through holes
00:37:33
drilled in the bones of the ankle it is
00:37:36
a Watson Jones or modified Watson Jones
00:37:39
technique the family or the physician
00:37:41
may remember this sheriff Adams next
00:37:45
contacted Linda gala near a forensic
00:37:48
artist renowned for her ability to
00:37:50
create accurate composite drawings based
00:37:52
on human remains one of the first things
00:37:56
we do
00:37:57
I'll get photos of the skulls and it's
00:38:00
important for those to be to scale the
00:38:02
same size of the skull we use the crime
00:38:05
lab to do that and they bring forth that
00:38:07
profiles and facial front of the skulls
00:38:10
themselves then an artist will sit down
00:38:12
and we'll put either tissue paper or
00:38:15
some type of matte acetate over it so we
00:38:18
can still see the photograph but draw
00:38:20
and we actually plot the tissue depth
00:38:22
using these charts and you just mold
00:38:25
that face until it comes to life on
00:38:27
paper little miss panas off-key was
00:38:32
beginning to come alive for sheriff
00:38:33
Adams next he asked Linda gala near to
00:38:37
attempt something she had never done
00:38:38
before
00:38:39
create age regression drawings
00:38:41
approximating how the victim might have
00:38:43
appeared first at the age of 12 then at
00:38:46
the age of 6 this pioneering technique
00:38:50
had never before been used in law
00:38:52
enforcement
00:38:54
maybe my my people that I was trying to
00:38:57
locate hadn't seen mr. panis off key for
00:39:00
several years she could have been uh any
00:39:05
of numerous things that she hadn't been
00:39:06
in touch with a loved one for several
00:39:08
years so I needed something that I could
00:39:11
put her back in time with the hopes that
00:39:13
maybe a schoolteacher Sunday school
00:39:15
teacher even a classmate that it went to
00:39:18
school would say when she's in the fifth
00:39:19
grade all the first grade that would
00:39:21
remember
00:39:23
sheriff Adams has mailed fliers to more
00:39:25
than 3000 law enforcement agencies
00:39:27
throughout the United States and Canada
00:39:29
is contacted hundreds of hospitals
00:39:32
followed up hundreds of leads still the
00:39:34
identity at Little Miss panas off key
00:39:36
remains a mystery I know that there's
00:39:41
there's a parent there's a that a loved
00:39:42
one as a mother a father a aunt maybe
00:39:45
even a sunday-school teacher somewhere
00:39:46
that knows and loves this young girl and
00:39:49
I think I went to them to try to
00:39:50
identify this young girl and get a
00:39:53
buried in a rifle place and take her
00:39:54
home sheriff Adams believes that the
00:39:58
young woman may have been a Native
00:40:00
American heritage
00:40:01
she stood five feet two inches tall
00:40:03
weighed 100 pounds and was approximately
00:40:06
20 years old in addition to the Watson
00:40:09
Jones surgical technique that have been
00:40:11
performed on her ankle the young woman
00:40:13
had extensive dental work including
00:40:15
crowns caps and fillings sheriff Adams
00:40:19
does not rule out the possibility that
00:40:21
she was a runaway the body of Little
00:40:26
Miss panas off key was discovered in
00:40:27
February of 1971 nearly 20 years later
00:40:31
the complete physical examination
00:40:33
revealed that she had given birth to at
00:40:35
least one child which means is somebody
00:40:38
somewhere may have grown up without ever
00:40:40
knowing what happened to his or her
00:40:42
mother
