surmising that the attack on her took

place outside the taxi and that the

attacker somehow cut himself during the

attack and bled inside the taxi while he

19th 1971 two teenagers were hitchhiking

along the interstate heading north from
00:34:35
Tampa while crossing the narrow Lake
00:34:41
panas off Key Bridge they noticed the
00:34:43
outline of a human form in the shallow
00:34:45
murky water
00:34:48

within an hour authorities have been

called to retrieve the badly decomposed
00:34:59
body of a young woman she appeared to
00:35:01
have been strangled a man sized 36 belt

was still wrapped around her throat

authorities determined that the woman

may have been in her late teens or early
00:35:13
twenties she carried no identification
00:35:15
and had been dead for approximately
00:35:17
three weeks investigators were unable to
00:35:23
find the killer or determine the woman's
00:35:25
identity tragically no one ever came

forward to claim her body six months

passed the young woman was laid to rest

beneath a small metal marker which

simply read Jane Doe 1971

sheriff of Sumpter County he began to

review the department's unsolved cases

and was particularly disturbed by the

murder of the young woman it bothered me

the fact that this young girl had never

been identified and being a daddy and a
00:36:04
granddaddy I just you know I just

couldn't couldn't accept the fact that

there's somebody out there couldn't come

forward and let us know who this young

girl was it's something that I had to do

and I just feel deeply their submission

and I've got to accomplish each year law

enforcement is faced with thousands of

cases similar to the murder mystery in

Florida but some are so senseless and

heart-wrenching the investigation will

often turn into a personal crusade for

the past decade

sheriff Jamie Adams has engaged the

foremost experts in the country to find

out everything he possibly can about the
00:36:40
young woman he calls little miss panis
00:36:43
off key a year after he took office
00:36:47
sheriff Adams officially reopened the
00:36:49
case he obtained a court order to have
00:36:52
the body exhumed dr. William maples one
00:36:58
of the nation's foremost forensic
00:36:59
anthropologist was brought in to assist
00:37:02
in the new investigation the
00:37:06
re-examination of the remains ordered by
00:37:08
sheriff Adams gave us a piece of
00:37:10
information that is crucial something
00:37:13
that wouldn't have been known had it not
00:37:15
been for sheriff Adams and that was that
00:37:17
she had Arthur Pedic surgery to her
00:37:20
right ankle the surgery done to the
00:37:23
right ankle of this young woman was
00:37:25
required because of instability in that
00:37:27
ankle this was done by an orthopedic
00:37:30
surgeon who wound a tendon through holes
00:37:33
drilled in the bones of the ankle it is
00:37:36
a Watson Jones or modified Watson Jones
00:37:39
technique the family or the physician
00:37:41

lab to do that and they bring forth that

profiles and facial front of the skulls

themselves then an artist will sit down

and we'll put either tissue paper or

some type of matte acetate over it so we

can still see the photograph but draw

and we actually plot the tissue depth

using these charts and you just mold

that face until it comes to life on

approximating how the victim might have

the age of 6 this pioneering technique

had never before been used in law

enforcement

locate hadn't seen mr. panis off key for

several years she could have been uh any
00:39:05
of numerous things that she hadn't been
00:39:06
in touch with a loved one for several

years so I needed something that I could

put her back in time with the hopes that

maybe a schoolteacher Sunday school
00:39:15
teacher even a classmate that it went to
00:39:18
school would say when she's in the fifth
00:39:19
grade all the first grade that would
00:39:21
remember
00:39:23
sheriff Adams has mailed fliers to more
00:39:25
than 3000 law enforcement agencies
00:39:27
throughout the United States and Canada
00:39:29
is contacted hundreds of hospitals
00:39:32
followed up hundreds of leads still the
00:39:34
identity at Little Miss panas off key
00:39:36
remains a mystery I know that there's
00:39:41
there's a parent there's a that a loved
00:39:42
one as a mother a father a aunt maybe
00:39:45
even a sunday-school teacher somewhere
00:39:46
that knows and loves this young girl and
00:39:49
I think I went to them to try to
00:39:50
identify this young girl and get a
00:39:53
buried in a rifle place and take her
00:39:54
home sheriff Adams believes that the
00:39:58
young woman may have been a Native
00:40:00
American heritage
00:40:01
she stood five feet two inches tall
00:40:03
weighed 100 pounds and was approximately
00:40:06
20 years old in addition to the Watson
00:40:09
Jones surgical technique that have been
00:40:11
performed on her ankle the young woman
00:40:13
had extensive dental work including
00:40:15
crowns caps and fillings sheriff Adams
00:40:19
does not rule out the possibility that
00:40:21
she was a runaway the body of Little
00:40:26
Miss panas off key was discovered in
00:40:27
February of 1971 nearly 20 years later

the complete physical examination
00:40:33
revealed that she had given birth to at
00:40:35
least one child which means is somebody
00:40:38
somewhere may have grown up without ever

knowing what happened to his or her
