00:00:24
one for the running nerds Laura Nagel
00:00:26
five years ago she had a knee injury a
00:00:28
doctor told her that she may never run
00:00:29
again
00:00:30
this year she has dominated the track
00:00:34
season in New Zealand she's unbeaten
00:00:37
she's won the national titles for the
00:00:39
1500 meters three thousand meters and
00:00:42
five thousand meters and she's running
00:00:43
times that she hasn't run for like the
00:00:45
last eight years and it's an honor to
00:00:47

00:01:22
Nagel hello
00:01:25
what what are you doing this year like
00:01:27
you're unbeaten you've got to the end of
00:01:29
the season you've never been beaten yeah
00:01:32
what is so different in 2022 um I think
00:01:35
for me this year everything's just kind
00:01:37
of everything's just kind of come
00:01:38
together
00:01:39
um and yeah my I always keep saying
00:01:42
especially with the girls in our group
00:01:43
I'm like I'm 30 years old I'm old now
00:01:45
that I've kind of just like learned a
00:01:47
lot from in the past and yeah I think
00:01:49
covert has actually helped me I know a
00:01:51
lot of people covert has been really
00:01:52
really tough for but um for me I was
00:01:55
able to get in a lot of really
00:01:57
consistent training and able to rest
00:01:59
that's actually probably the key to
00:02:02
what's changed me the last year is I've
00:02:04
actually learned how to rest properly
00:02:05
which yeah
00:02:08
that's what the form of your life it's
00:02:10
just been phenomenal like did you did
00:02:13
you hear did you have a feeling it was
00:02:14
going to be a good season like who could
00:02:15
you look at your training and go okay
00:02:17
I'm I'm I'm hot [ __ ] at the moment
00:02:20
um
00:02:23
um but yeah I I mean I knew it was gonna
00:02:25
be okay I also I didn't I didn't really
00:02:27
know either because I
00:02:29
um obviously my best times are from what
00:02:32
were from 2014 2015 so that's a long
00:02:36
time ago that's seven years ago is that
00:02:38
when you're in the states yeah when I
00:02:40
was in the states and I had a great
00:02:41
setup there absolutely loved it I just
00:02:43
there was always that fear I'd come home
00:02:45
and wouldn't get back to my best which
00:02:47
basically happened for up until this
00:02:50
year so why why do you think that is is
00:02:52
it because you just had um like really
00:02:54
good training Partners in the states
00:02:55
people that kept you honest is that the
00:02:57
um yeah probably a few things like I
00:02:59
when I came back from the states I went
00:03:01
back to Hawke's Bay and then I was
00:03:02
basically by myself so I could I kind of
00:03:04
keep that training going for like maybe
00:03:06
six months and then I got injured and
00:03:07
then it was so hard to get back from
00:03:10
being injured and then being by yourself
00:03:12
running with no one and yeah it was just
00:03:15
it was really mentally hard and then
00:03:16
obviously it's really the first time I
00:03:18
had to have a full-time job although I
00:03:20
was working when I was in the states too
00:03:21
but it was just yeah it was really
00:03:23
different it was really hot yeah so at
00:03:26
the time that we're recording this it's
00:03:27
like the week after the um Knight of
00:03:29
fives which was um a fantastic event
00:03:31
that you organized and then you went and
00:03:33
smashed it and won the won the 5 000
00:03:34
meters fastest time in eight years yeah
00:03:37
um I I was saying like right after
00:03:40
Nationals I was pretty cooked I was
00:03:42
really ready for a break so but I still
00:03:44
wanted to do those last two races this
00:03:46
season ran another 1500 PB which I was
00:03:48
really happy about I probably wanted a
00:03:50
bit quicker but at the same time I knew
00:03:52
I was literally on kind of dead legs and
00:03:55
then the same thing with 905 so I was
00:03:57
pretty happy that Knight of fives went
00:03:59
the way that it did
00:04:01
um if I had to run maybe a couple of
00:04:03
those K's a wee bit quicker I might have
00:04:04
dipped under 16 but yeah but that's okay
00:04:06
because for the um for the distances
00:04:08
that you're running like fifteen hundred
00:04:09
three thousand five thousand meters
00:04:11
should you be should you be past your
00:04:12
Prime now at 8 30. you know what I mean
00:04:15
no should you be eyeing up like a half
00:04:18
marathons or ten thousand meters now
00:04:19
yeah so like no I don't think so like I
00:04:23
I mean yes I would like to do those and
00:04:24
I would I really want to smash all of my
00:04:26
PBS there because I still I for me
00:04:28
they're not where I want them to be but
00:04:30
I think I mean you're seeing so many
00:04:32
women across the world now that are
00:04:34
actually peeking in their late 30s so
00:04:35
like for me I'm like I'm still fresh I'm
00:04:38
still young yeah absolutely I mean you
00:04:40
you know you've proven that this year
00:04:41
it's phenomenal yeah and I think with
00:04:43
yeah as you kind of get to 30 and then
00:04:46
onwards yeah priority shift but I also
00:04:49
think you start to realize what actually
00:04:50
works for you and not what works for one
00:04:52
person doesn't work for another and I
00:04:54
think that's kind of what I've found
00:04:55
yeah yeah are you going to come north
00:04:58
games are you in the coming of dancing
00:04:59
no no so I I'm a wee bit off standards
00:05:03
right I definitely if I had maybe
00:05:06
another year up my sleeve I think I
00:05:08
would be able to get there but um I've
00:05:10
just kind of decided like this year I'm
00:05:12
wee bit too off for those things and I
00:05:14
need a few other things to go right so I
00:05:16
think this season's kind of been a
00:05:18
really good builder for me and I just
00:05:20
feel like like it's there I just need
00:05:24
um yeah a little bit more time yeah a
00:05:26
bit more time sharpen that knife yeah
00:05:27
and also just like probably maybe throw
00:05:30
myself into like an altitude environment
00:05:31
at some point too just to kind of all
00:05:33
those little extra one percenters which
00:05:35
are really hard to get right
00:05:37
um and yeah so I've got to work out that
00:05:39
plan soon to try and aim for Paris but
00:05:42
um yeah Wednesday at 2024. a couple of
00:05:44
years away a couple years so I think
00:05:46
within two years I can kind of do that
00:05:48
and I think I'm also in like a place in
00:05:49
my life where I'm like all right I feel
00:05:51
like I can maybe give that a crack
00:05:53
without feeling like I'm like leading my
00:05:55
career completely go to craft if that
00:05:58
makes sense so hard isn't it finding
00:06:00
that balance because there's no a lot of
00:06:02
money in running is there no definitely
00:06:03
not I mean you don't become a runner to
00:06:06
get rich that's yeah same as I've
00:06:07
discovered with doing a podcast about
00:06:09
running yeah yeah it's not it's not
00:06:13
only have to love it for what it is
00:06:16
um to keep being able to do it
00:06:18
um yeah even like especially in New
00:06:20
Zealand like prize money isn't exactly
00:06:22
through the roof yeah what is it like a
00:06:24
grand here and there sort of thing yeah
00:06:26
if you get lucky
00:06:27
um like I think there was one race I did
00:06:29
which I was really fortunate like I
00:06:31
didn't think it would go that well I
00:06:32
broke the meat record which had a really
00:06:34
good bonus in there but like so that was
00:06:36
maybe just over a grand so like yeah
00:06:38
that that maybe pays for a pair of shoes
00:06:40
or two but that's about it it doesn't go
00:06:43
far does it no no gas money yeah exactly
00:06:46
trying to get to places and just
00:06:48
different trips and stuff when you think
00:06:49
about like if I do want to go overseas
00:06:51
like they're just like gone right yeah
00:06:52
absolutely so okay so so Paris um 2024
00:06:56
that's like the big long-term goal what
00:06:58
sort of events are you thinking for
00:06:59
Paris they're three thousand five
00:07:01
thousand fifteen yes these I would love
00:07:03
3K but there's no 3K there's only a
00:07:05
Steeplechase all right yeah I would
00:07:07
probably like break my ankles are you
00:07:09
trying to do that one
00:07:12
um so yeah yeah I mean I don't think the
00:07:15
1500 I mean I might be able to in the
00:07:17
1500 but I think 5K is definitely my
00:07:19
better shot yeah um I'm a wee bit off
00:07:22
that but I just I don't know I just I
00:07:24
have this belief in myself that I think
00:07:26
I can do it like I just yeah yeah okay
00:07:29
well yeah so last week in the nine to
00:07:30
five she ran um 1604 which is it's crazy
00:07:34
quick it's phenomenal where do you need
00:07:35
to be for the Olympics um Olympics so
00:07:38
you basically need to run an a standard
00:07:40
to qualify for New Zealand which I think
00:07:41
is about
00:07:43
1504. it's like it's a good minute off
00:07:45
I've run faster my pb's a wee bit faster
00:07:47
but um yeah I just think if I can get in
00:07:50
the right race after a good really good
00:07:52
block of training with some good people
00:07:54
I think I could definitely get really
00:07:56
close if not yeah under that who knows
00:07:58
that yeah oh how exciting all right can
00:08:01
we go we'll go all the way back so so
00:08:03
you're at intermediate you're playing
00:08:05
badminton you hate running how do you
00:08:07
how do you how does it start how do you
00:08:09
get into running yeah why did you hate
00:08:11
it first of all what was your beef with
00:08:12
running I was just remember like we used
00:08:15
to I know I think I ran an intermediate
00:08:17
I was always like really competitive I
00:08:18
was like you know you try to get the
00:08:19
house points and that was always really
00:08:21
fun for me I used to do that with my
00:08:23
friends and everything and I must I
00:08:26
think I qualify for like into
00:08:27
Intermediate School Champs or something
00:08:29
and then they'd make you run a loop at
00:08:32
lunch time to train for that and that
00:08:33
was like like you'd go outside the
00:08:35
school gate and then you'd be running on
00:08:36
the concrete so like that in my head I'm
00:08:40
like no that's probably why I didn't
00:08:41
like it
00:08:42
um and I think it just was I don't know
00:08:45
just not fun it wasn't like a sport
00:08:47
where you're trying to get points it
00:08:48
just yeah it's kind of boring yeah a lot
00:08:51
of kids don't like running a lot of
00:08:52
people not even just kids don't like
00:08:53
running and I totally get that it's just
00:08:55
not for them I I reckon um I've got a
00:08:58
theory about that I reckon like the the
00:09:00
school I went to Palmer's North boys
00:09:01
higher if you've got your PE here as
00:09:03
punishment you just had to like run
00:09:04
around the run laps of the field in your
00:09:06
uniform so there's almost like a and
00:09:08
then you're forced to do the school
00:09:10
cross country so people just have like a
00:09:11
hatred of running yeah and I think
00:09:15
which weighed like 10 kgs that was never
00:09:18
fun
00:09:19
so it was so when did you discover
00:09:21
you're real good so you gotta you go to
00:09:23
taradale high school and then you you
00:09:25
smashed like the school 3000 meter
00:09:27
record or something like a minute yeah
00:09:29
so we're just naturally good
00:09:31
so you said no
00:09:33
um I like like clean and
00:09:36
into fat um
00:09:37
really good to think at the age of 12.
00:09:39
he said it's really unhealthy are you
00:09:41
yeah where did that come from I think
00:09:43
just it's probably the same story like
00:09:45
you see things in magazines or you hear
00:09:47
like you know your friends or like you
00:09:49
know there's a certain girl at school
00:09:50
you're like I wish I looked like that
00:09:51
because of all the boys
00:09:54
um which is really stupid
00:09:56
um so yeah I just ran a loop of my
00:09:58
family Orchard
00:10:00
um basically once a day during that
00:10:02
summer between intermediate and high
00:10:05
school I didn't really think too much of
00:10:07
it like I just used to go and do that
00:10:09
um me and my siblings and kind of free
00:10:11
stuff we were always really active like
00:10:13
we'd be out in the orchard for hours on
00:10:15
end doing stuff so don't know why I
00:10:17
thought I needed to do that
00:10:18
um were you and like in hindsight were
00:10:21
you a healthy weight or were you yeah
00:10:22
it's absolutely fine like I look at
00:10:24
photos I'm like there was Laura there
00:10:26
was nothing wrong with you like now so
00:10:28
yeah obviously just like something got
00:10:30
in my head that that was the thing
00:10:32
um so yeah then I got to high school and
00:10:34
again still competitive with house
00:10:35
points and they always held like the 3
00:10:38
000 meters like at seven a.m before
00:10:40
school one day so I was ah go jump into
00:10:42
that get some more points no no one will
00:10:44
do that because it's seven in the
00:10:45
morning
00:10:46
got it now you're doing notified that's
00:10:48
like the opposite end of the day it's
00:10:50
like close to midnight basically my
00:10:51
bedtime
00:10:52
um yeah so 7am why 7 A.M that's crazy
00:10:55
yeah I guess it was just the only time
00:10:57
it fit because it was like it was like
00:10:58
Athletics and then swimming and then
00:11:00
like there's just so much going on so
00:11:01
yeah and then I I found out the day
00:11:03
after that I broke the record School
00:11:05
record by a minute and the Sports
00:11:07
Coordinator at the time who ended up
00:11:09
being my coach had asked if I would come
00:11:11
along and train with their small group
00:11:13
of
00:11:14
um athletes one of them happened to be a
00:11:16
girl who went off to the states who was
00:11:17
a bit of an idol for me
00:11:20
um and yeah just kind of I think just
00:11:22
through that and me being quite
00:11:24
competitive and just going to training
00:11:26
twice a week week that's when I started
00:11:28
to like slowly chip away at things
00:11:31
um I think actually Angie Smith a few
00:11:33
Maybe Might Have Been last year she kind
00:11:35
of took a screenshot of results from
00:11:37
year nine and I was like 50 something in
00:11:40
the race and then there was a whole
00:11:41
bunch of girls that are still running
00:11:42
now that were like top ten so I was like
00:11:44
you know it was like in the New Zealand
00:11:46
secondary school and I was like wow
00:11:51
like a lot of people kind of give up if
00:11:52
they're a top 50 and they just don't
00:11:54
keep going so yeah that's kind of how I
00:11:56
got into it and then eventually how I
00:11:59
started doing a wee bit better just by
00:12:01
going to training twice a week so what
00:12:03
sort of what sort of times were you
00:12:05
doing like back at that age yeah like a
00:12:07
as a teenager in secondary school oh can
00:12:09
you remember what year like kilometer
00:12:10
time was were you five thousand time um
00:12:12
I Remember by the time I got to seventh
00:12:14
form I think I ran like four
00:12:16
429 or for 1500 and then wow were you
00:12:21
faster than all the guys at your school
00:12:27
1500 yeah
00:12:28
yeah it wasn't it wasn't
00:12:30
nice we had one a couple of guys on the
00:12:32
team
00:12:33
um on the small Squad that we had um but
00:12:35
yeah I always loved beating the guys
00:12:37
there so that's always bad
00:12:39
I quite enjoy doing this yeah I bet yeah
00:12:43
I bet I own that I own that and then um
00:12:45
and then you go to go to the states uh
00:12:47
where's Rhode Island yeah so uh Rhode
00:12:49
Island is 40 minutes or about an hour
00:12:52
south of Boston it gets pretty cold in
00:12:54
the winters
00:12:55
um but some pretty nice full kind of
00:12:57
Summer times but how does that come
00:13:00
about you just um you get on the you do
00:13:01
have some good performances so you get
00:13:02
on the radar of some of the universities
00:13:04
and did you have any other scholarship
00:13:06
offers yeah so I I was like like I said
00:13:10
it mentioned that girl before who went
00:13:11
over she went over to a school loved it
00:13:14
but didn't quite like the coaching kind
00:13:16
of environment so I was like okay I
00:13:18
don't want to go there but I want to go
00:13:20
um and so I did a lot of research at the
00:13:22
time there used to be a website called
00:13:24
New Zealand or NZ run so they had a list
00:13:26
that had basically all the schools with
00:13:29
all of the new athletes that were there
00:13:31
and I was looking through and I'd seen
00:13:33
Kim Smith at Providence College reached
00:13:35
out to her I was like hi like I'm Laura
00:13:37
you probably don't know me I've done
00:13:38
this and I'm really looking at a
00:13:40
scholarship to the states and she was
00:13:42
like Kim Smith the marathon runner right
00:13:43
yeah yeah absolute Legend
00:13:46
um she was like look I'm biased here's
00:13:48
Providence oh like get in touch with Ray
00:13:50
and from there it was just that was it
00:13:55
um I did have a couple other schools
00:13:56
reached out to me but I was just pretty
00:13:58
sold on everything I'd heard from both
00:14:00
kiwis and then also talking to Ray
00:14:03
um at the time as a coach and yeah that
00:14:06
was basically how I went over what do
00:14:07
you get as part of your scholarship like
00:14:08
do they give you some money or they pay
00:14:10
for your flights accommodation what's
00:14:11
the deal yeah so what they do basically
00:14:13
you find your way over there with your
00:14:15
own flights but from there like your
00:14:17
accommodation's taking care of your
00:14:19
Foods taken care of all of your travel
00:14:21
to races is taken care of you get like a
00:14:24
lot of gear not every school's the same
00:14:26
with gear but we were treated really
00:14:28
nicely so it was awesome your education
00:14:30
grateful basically I didn't do anything
00:14:32
I basically just started to pay for my
00:14:34
flight so it was like yeah kind of like
00:14:36
a dream come true like I was like I
00:14:38
didn't really I basically once I turned
00:14:40
15 and knew that my friend had gone to
00:14:43
the states and loved it that was my only
00:14:45
like that's what I'm doing there's no
00:14:46
other option sorry like that's it um so
00:14:50
I actually got injured in year 13 for
00:14:52
like about six months and I was like oh
00:14:54
no my dreams are destroyed how am I
00:14:56
gonna do this uh eventually came back
00:14:58
which was cool and then yeah so that's
00:15:01
kind of Providence I guess that's how
00:15:03
what they end up covering basically
00:15:05
everything that you yeah that's a sweet
00:15:07
deal and you you bloody loved it you
00:15:09
overstated what you were there you're
00:15:10
basically a resident you were there for
00:15:12
six years yeah yeah I um the plan was
00:15:16
only to go for four yeah as everyone
00:15:18
does because you know you think oh I'm
00:15:19
gonna come home and whatever but yeah
00:15:22
pretty quickly after about two years I
00:15:24
started working in sports and phone kind
00:15:26
of saw the path that I could also get my
00:15:28
grad school paid for by working at
00:15:30
school too so yes stayed for sex so how
00:15:33
are you when you went over like 18. yeah
00:15:34
I would have yeah 18 so turned 18 in
00:15:37
February and then would have gone over
00:15:38
and August yeah yeah July August yeah
00:15:42
were you homesick it's a long way from
00:15:44
home
00:15:45
um no I was like I was like at the point
00:15:47
at 18 where I was like New Zealand's
00:15:49
such a [ __ ]
00:15:52
yeah I'm like I need to get out of here
00:15:55
this sucks
00:15:57
um and then yeah every summer because I
00:15:59
stayed for a year and a half before I
00:16:01
first came home
00:16:02
um ended up being taken down to Florida
00:16:04
with a family with a family a friend
00:16:06
which was really really cool and then I
00:16:08
was like well I don't want to go home in
00:16:09
winter so I ended up working on campus
00:16:11
that summer and then yeah came home
00:16:12
eventually after a year and a half
00:16:14
wasn't homesick but I think with the
00:16:16
four weeks leading into coming home for
00:16:18
the first time yes as I was there longer
00:16:21
I definitely got more homesick
00:16:23
um yeah I don't know what it is I guess
00:16:24
it just says you get older things
00:16:25
priorities yeah and then you realize
00:16:28
every time you come home that New
00:16:29
Zealand's political yeah but it must
00:16:31
have been um a crazy eye-opening
00:16:34
experience being from the Hawkes Bay and
00:16:35
and going over there did it feel like
00:16:38
you'd walked into I don't know like the
00:16:40
set of Clueless or yeah
00:16:42
Mean Girls yes I I'd never really gone
00:16:46
much overseas prior to that and my whole
00:16:49
perception of America was the movie so I
00:16:51
was thinking I'm going to go to Province
00:16:52
it's going to be like cheerleaders
00:16:54
they're going to be football teams it's
00:16:55
going to be sororities
00:16:59
um it turns out Providence doesn't have
00:17:01
a football team they have basketball
00:17:02
which was awesome and no sorority life
00:17:06
but there was a kind of similar setup
00:17:07
just because of where it was but it was
00:17:09
very
00:17:10
um it's a very very wealthy school so
00:17:12
you did see a lot of that side of things
00:17:14
which is quite interesting especially me
00:17:16
coming from like little Orchard and
00:17:18
Hawke's Bay like walking to the
00:17:20
supermarket in my bare feet like like a
00:17:23
very different kind of thing but no it
00:17:25
was it was amazing and I loved it so
00:17:28
much yeah you bring up the Barefoot like
00:17:30
that's that's funny I feel like that's
00:17:31
in New Zealand and Australia thing
00:17:32
nowhere else in the world is that
00:17:34
acceptable no and I I don't think I
00:17:36
would actually ever do it in America
00:17:37
anyway like yeah no and how good was the
00:17:41
um how good was the running over there
00:17:42
did you get over there and you were you
00:17:44
were like hot [ __ ] on the team or were
00:17:46
you like suddenly oh my God I'm I'm
00:17:47
nothing special
00:17:49
um I I actually had a kind of nice
00:17:52
um I guess eye-opening moment right
00:17:54
before I got to Providence because I
00:17:56
went to we'll do new champs and I at the
00:17:58
time I thought oh yeah I'm so good like
00:17:59
whatever and then I get to world Junior
00:18:03
Champs and I barely finished 16th I
00:18:06
think in the 3K I was like wow I suck so
00:18:09
it was kind of like a really good item
00:18:11
to be like okay you're gonna be thrown
00:18:12
into the school where you're not the
00:18:13
best you're going to be racing against
00:18:15
the base and you just have to work your
00:18:16
way up
00:18:17
um I did pretty I guess I did do
00:18:20
well-ish my first
00:18:22
sort of six months well my first race I
00:18:25
did anyway but then I got injured and
00:18:27
basically broke my foot because
00:18:29
what ended up being Red's kind of a
00:18:33
turned into a stress fracture which I
00:18:35
didn't really know too much about at the
00:18:37
time what what it reads yes so relative
00:18:39
energy deficiency
00:18:41
um which is basically it used to be
00:18:43
called the female triad but obviously
00:18:45
now it's kind of they've changed the
00:18:47
term because it's not just with females
00:18:48
it's just we hear a lot more about it
00:18:49
with females so basically kind of the
00:18:52
never-ending sort of triangle of
00:18:55
um not eating enough food for the energy
00:18:58
that you're outputting in therefore that
00:19:00
kind of starts to take a toll on your
00:19:01
body over time the longer you leave it
00:19:04
the probably worse it's going to get you
00:19:05
tend to see a lot of bone injuries yeah
00:19:08
and then long-term side effects which
00:19:11
um uh more and more talked about now
00:19:12
which is really cool but it's yeah it's
00:19:14
a bummer I wasn't talking about back
00:19:16
then or even earlier because it's
00:19:17
probably
00:19:19
um yeah it had pretty some pretty bad
00:19:20
effects on a lot of people in the past
00:19:21
is that right how so
00:19:24
um well I guess one of the kind of
00:19:26
bigger ones is a lot of females end up
00:19:28
losing their periods for an extended
00:19:30
period of time when that happens
00:19:32
obviously that's your whole menstrual
00:19:34
cycle your bone density can decrease
00:19:36
from that and then if you're going to
00:19:38
keep going down the track it can prevent
00:19:40
you from being able to have babies
00:19:41
everything like that so it's um it's
00:19:45
something that a lot of younger girls
00:19:47
don't think about like when I was 15
00:19:50
there's no way I was thinking about
00:19:51
having kids it's the last thing you're
00:19:54
thinking about but I think yeah some
00:19:56
people end up
00:19:58
making a few poor decisions they're not
00:20:00
not necessarily about any fault of their
00:20:01
own it's just kind of things that have
00:20:03
happened or the way that they start
00:20:04
thinking and not fueling themselves
00:20:06
properly that lead to this sort of what
00:20:08
is what is the solution like is this
00:20:10
because you're training too hard or is
00:20:11
it just like a nutrition based things
00:20:13
um
00:20:15
but a lot of it is it tends to be around
00:20:18
like not fueling yourself as well but
00:20:21
sometimes yes it definitely is training
00:20:22
too hard like especially if your body's
00:20:23
not ready for that kind of training but
00:20:25
there are some people that might be
00:20:26
training hard and well yeah and just not
00:20:29
fueling enough like they might be close
00:20:32
but not quite there so then their body
00:20:34
starts to sort of break down those break
00:20:36
down the muscle and then it has that
00:20:38
longer term effect so yeah if you're at
00:20:41
that level like you you want to train as
00:20:42
hard as you can right yep so training
00:20:45
list is not not an option I guess yeah
00:20:46
and
00:20:48
yeah and I think
00:20:49
training too like you're trying to live
00:20:52
um well I think a lot of people think oh
00:20:55
yeah well I'm eating enough for training
00:20:57
I'm like yes but you're also like you
00:20:58
know your brain needs the energy to
00:21:00
function like you're still doing other
00:21:02
things other than just running like
00:21:04
there's I think there's a lot of people
00:21:06
that might kind of forget that sort of
00:21:08
element too so yeah it's it's a hard
00:21:10
thing to get right but
00:21:12
um yeah so how did your foot Break
00:21:16
um yeah so it was kind of
00:21:18
it was a weird sort of thing that
00:21:20
happened I finished a cross-country race
00:21:21
and maybe 50 minute 50 meters before the
00:21:24
Finish Line I think I remember it felt
00:21:26
like I stepped in a hole and I couldn't
00:21:28
walk after that race and that was my
00:21:30
first one of the Season like our team
00:21:31
had done really well I'd finished really
00:21:33
well individually and then I couldn't
00:21:34
walk I was like what the hell is going
00:21:36
on here and then basically for the next
00:21:38
seven to eight weeks up until regionals
00:21:41
I would go see a guy who would like push
00:21:43
my bone back into place and that's what
00:21:46
they thought had happened the day before
00:21:48
Nationals which you know NCAA is like
00:21:49
huge competition like a lot of things in
00:21:51
the line day before I'm in tears I don't
00:21:54
tend to cry a lot so to have like to
00:21:57
kind of get to that point
00:21:58
um obviously it was quite bad and
00:22:00
basically didn't race you're in tears
00:22:02
because you you're in pain yeah a lot of
00:22:04
pain but probably a mix of things like I
00:22:06
was like emotionally I need to race like
00:22:08
at the moment I'm like our number five
00:22:10
runner in Cross Country
00:22:12
um in the States you add up the top five
00:22:14
places and that's basically where you
00:22:16
finish so if that number five Runners
00:22:18
out then all a sudden the next person
00:22:20
has to be that and if they're not quite
00:22:22
there that's that is a lot of pressure
00:22:23
and stress on that person if they didn't
00:22:24
think that that was their position so
00:22:26
yeah yeah uh Todd
00:22:30
wow and you've had other injuries as
00:22:32
well like your knee operation a couple
00:22:34
of years ago yeah what other injuries
00:22:36
have you had so you broke your foot yep
00:22:38
um I have always had kind of knee issues
00:22:41
that's probably the main ones um I have
00:22:44
had a hip thing before they put for like
00:22:47
two weeks but
00:22:48
um it's usually my knees I had this yeah
00:22:51
this knee injury basically got it it
00:22:55
would have been about 20 20. you know
00:22:58
2019 yeah was that arthritis or
00:23:00
something yeah so I basically I started
00:23:03
to get this knee pain which didn't
00:23:04
really make any sense to me no one could
00:23:06
figure out what it was I had scanned and
00:23:08
then my knee was swelling up like it was
00:23:11
like double the size of my other knee
00:23:13
and I was like what is going on here
00:23:14
like that doesn't sound good like
00:23:16
someone tell me what's happening and no
00:23:17
one could tell me they eventually told
00:23:19
me to go to rheumatologists and I was
00:23:21
like what I'm 25 like I don't I don't
00:23:25
have arthritis if they said basically I
00:23:27
wouldn't be able to run much again
00:23:28
because at that point I was getting like
00:23:30
well I was getting sharp pain which to
00:23:32
me in my head was like that doesn't that
00:23:35
doesn't equate to arthritis for me like
00:23:36
not from what I've heard um and a lot of
00:23:38
things just didn't make sense like I
00:23:40
would go for a run and it would be fine
00:23:42
and the next day I'd attempt it and I'd
00:23:43
just get the sharp pain couldn't run for
00:23:45
three weeks after that and it would
00:23:47
start to swell up again
00:23:49
yeah it was really it was really
00:23:51
confusing and hard and then basically
00:23:52
they're like oh yeah you just need to
00:23:54
take these pills and probably just not
00:23:56
run at all and yeah and it didn't work
00:23:59
now that must have been um how do you
00:24:01
how do you cope with hearing news like
00:24:03
that that you might never run again like
00:24:05
do you do you believe it or are you like
00:24:07
well screw you I'm gonna prove you wrong
00:24:08
yeah a bit of both like At first I was
00:24:11
like obviously really upset because I
00:24:13
was like yeah that's who you are that's
00:24:15
who I am and also I think
00:24:17
you know sometimes you go into doctors
00:24:18
or these sorts of people that don't
00:24:21
quite realize what that actually means
00:24:23
to you and the delivery of the message
00:24:24
is pretty [ __ ] like I'm like and then I
00:24:30
I remember going in and him saying that
00:24:32
and then I think I went back maybe three
00:24:34
weeks later and I had a list of
00:24:36
questions I'm like I'm gonna throw all
00:24:37
these things at you if you can't answer
00:24:39
like XYZ like you've got something to
00:24:41
say for yourself
00:24:42
um good for you I yeah I wonder how they
00:24:45
feel about that like being uh sort of
00:24:47
challenged I I think they'd appreciate
00:24:49
it right you said no I think they
00:24:52
definitely wouldn't because I've
00:24:55
actually had I've thought about this a
00:24:56
lot recently especially with like covert
00:24:58
and like people challenging other
00:25:00
people's opinions and then challenging
00:25:03
Professionals in that area kind of thing
00:25:05
so it's
00:25:06
it's interesting but to me I like I felt
00:25:09
fine doing it because it no one could
00:25:12
give me an answer that made sense yeah
00:25:13
and until I got there I wasn't gonna
00:25:16
completely give up I mean I felt like I
00:25:18
almost did a little bit but at the same
00:25:20
time deep down I was like no there's got
00:25:22
to be some other answer to that so I
00:25:23
keep I tried like
00:25:25
an osteopath who I honestly could not
00:25:28
tell you what she did like I I felt like
00:25:30
it was like some weird Voodoo kind of
00:25:32
thing
00:25:33
like acupuncture she kind of like held
00:25:37
my leg for like 20 minutes I could I
00:25:41
couldn't feel her doing anything
00:25:42
whatsoever but apparently she was like
00:25:45
moving her fingers and I was like
00:25:47
literally go doing nothing but okay
00:25:50
we'll see what happens here maybe
00:25:52
there's something weird going on that's
00:25:54
gonna fix me
00:25:55
not really sure if that did work but God
00:25:57
you'd try anything though wouldn't you
00:25:59
oh yeah definitely
00:26:00
um yeah and there's yeah I think I would
00:26:04
have probably just gone to anyone until
00:26:06
someone gave me an answer which
00:26:07
eventually I did I got a second opinion
00:26:09
with another MRI and he was like oh yeah
00:26:11
you've just got to assist in here and a
00:26:13
little micro fracture we can fix it with
00:26:15
a keyhole surgery I was like what you're
00:26:17
telling me like I could have had this
00:26:19
done like a year ago and not be out for
00:26:21
two years so yeah oh that's amazing
00:26:24
because that doctor that said you might
00:26:25
never run again I wonder if he's aware
00:26:27
that you've um you've got the national
00:26:28
titles this year for the 1500 the 3000
00:26:31
of the five thousand yeah I've I've
00:26:33
definitely thought about sending a nice
00:26:35
email I just thought I'd leave it there
00:26:38
yeah yeah you must have had time to sort
00:26:40
of ponder this or think about this how
00:26:41
would your life look without running
00:26:44
um what sort of a void would it leave
00:26:46
yeah I have thought about it but because
00:26:48
I'm back running I've tried not to too
00:26:51
much it's just more I'm just really
00:26:53
appreciative of the fact that I can run
00:26:55
now I think what was
00:26:57
what is really interesting now is that I
00:26:59
had that two years off of almost like
00:27:01
kind of had given up
00:27:03
I'd kind of and like this is almost back
00:27:06
to those old habits like the first thing
00:27:07
I thought was like oh my God I can't run
00:27:09
I'm going to turn into an elephant
00:27:12
like that like uh like I shouldn't think
00:27:15
like that that's stupid but I think what
00:27:17
it really allowed me to do is realize
00:27:19
like you know there's more to life than
00:27:21
just running and there's other things I
00:27:23
can do and yeah it was I think it was
00:27:25
really good for me to kind of sit back
00:27:27
and have that time off to be able to do
00:27:29
that but also like someone actually said
00:27:30
to me it was on the side of the track I
00:27:32
was watching and I think I was
00:27:33
recovering from my surgery and they're
00:27:35
like oh well maybe this will just tack
00:27:36
on an extra two years to your career and
00:27:38
I was like I'd actually never thought
00:27:40
about that
00:27:41
oh my god oh that's actually kind of
00:27:43
cool maybe it will and then you start to
00:27:45
see stories recently of like 38 year old
00:27:48
37 year old mums like
00:27:51
breaking American half marathon and
00:27:53
Marathon records and I'm like you know
00:27:55
what I think maybe this is something
00:27:57
that's actually worked out better for me
00:27:59
so absolutely yeah and and if you look
00:28:01
at the means equivalent to what you do
00:28:03
Nick well let's say how it's Willis now
00:28:05
what's her he's still doing some 400
00:28:07
miles 30 39 yeah bloody old it's
00:28:10
remarkable what he what he's done and
00:28:12
what it continues very very good
00:28:14
especially for was it is it 20 years now
00:28:15
he's done that yeah 20 consecutive years
00:28:17
yeah it's amazing really amazing wish I
00:28:20
could do something like that oh who
00:28:21
knows maybe maybe you can maybe
00:28:23
um do you do you think running was
00:28:25
always going to be a part of your life
00:28:26
so even when you're no longer winning
00:28:27
national titles and you're no longer
00:28:29
sitting the world on fire with your time
00:28:31
so you you still just do it for fun for
00:28:33
mental health physical health yeah
00:28:34
definitely I think I'll always run
00:28:36
um we always I've always joked about
00:28:38
this with friends who are in the similar
00:28:39
kind of age group as me I think probably
00:28:41
five years ago we always would have said
00:28:43
no no way would I ever do Masters and I
00:28:45
don't know whether I would still
00:28:47
completely compete once I kind of got to
00:28:50
like maybe over 40 but I think yeah
00:28:53
there's always something there and for
00:28:54
me like I'm still involved in sports so
00:28:58
um there's kind of like I guess the
00:28:59
administrative side or like creating
00:29:01
things that I would want for myself but
00:29:03
kind of later on down the line whether
00:29:05
that's events or
00:29:07
um I coach as well with Lydia O'Donnell
00:29:10
and the fumi Canada crew so yeah you
00:29:12
look like Lydia is fantastic hey yes
00:29:14
she's amazing they do an amazing job
00:29:16
yeah and like so enthusiastic about the
00:29:19
whole thing it makes it really exciting
00:29:20
to be a part of and yeah keep just keep
00:29:23
on kind of giving back to the sport
00:29:24
which we always had given ourselves yeah
00:29:27
when you were when you were training
00:29:28
what does an average week look like for
00:29:29
you I I'm very like high mileage based
00:29:32
so in the winter
00:29:33
um anywhere between kind of 110 to 140
00:29:36
140 is probably like right up there but
00:29:39
I will likely try and hit a few more of
00:29:42
those this winter
00:29:44
um that'll be you know there'll be a
00:29:45
workout or two in there and in a long
00:29:48
run I like to kind of run my long runs
00:29:50
hard-ish so what's what's Harish what
00:29:53
sort of place
00:29:54
I was doing like two hour runs probably
00:29:57
averaging somewhere around like 410 Pace
00:30:00
oh my God that is quick yeah I mean
00:30:03
there are definitely people that run a
00:30:04
lot quicker than that but at the time
00:30:05
that felt pretty fast um and that's kind
00:30:08
of starting out a wee bit slower and
00:30:09
then cutting down so yeah have you ever
00:30:11
tried a half yes they haven't gone that
00:30:13
great um I've done like three when you
00:30:17
say not great what do you mean exactly
00:30:19
um I did well so I did one it was I was
00:30:22
posted it was a long run so I wasn't
00:30:24
supposed to actually do it that fast so
00:30:25
it was in Hawke's Bay I think I ran like
00:30:27
121 so I was pretty happy with that for
00:30:29
a long run and kind of holding back and
00:30:31
then I ran Auckland half
00:30:34
um might have been 2019 felt awful on
00:30:38
the day I was still living in Hawke's
00:30:39
Bay at the time and I remember I came up
00:30:41
and I stayed at my friend's house in
00:30:43
takapuna thought I could just like get
00:30:45
dropped off at the start line now
00:30:46
apparently all the roads are closed
00:30:50
yeah there was a rookie mistake by me so
00:30:52
I ended up running from takapuna to
00:30:54
devonport for my warm-up and I was like
00:30:56
what's up like four or five kilometers I
00:30:59
can't remember it was it was too long
00:31:00
it's a good warm-up yeah I was only
00:31:02
planning on running 10 minutes so to
00:31:04
have to run 25 I was like not happy
00:31:06
about it
00:31:07
um and yeah I think I ran 119 there
00:31:11
um it's quite a hilly one though the the
00:31:13
bridges deceptively hilly isn't it goes
00:31:16
on forever I remember getting to top or
00:31:17
near the top and I was like oh my God am
00:31:19
I feeling faint am I going to get like
00:31:21
rigor mortis I need to slow down like
00:31:23
this is not good
00:31:24
so yeah I did that and then I haven't
00:31:27
really run a decent one since although
00:31:29
we did like a squad
00:31:31
um half marathon over lockdown and ran
00:31:33
an unofficial PB so that was cool to
00:31:36
kind of do that off of basically not
00:31:38
knowing where you're at at all so yeah
00:31:40
it was good what was that that
00:31:42
unofficial PB oh I think it was like 118
00:31:45
[Music]
00:31:46
118 40 or 20ish maybe yeah so geez
00:31:50
that's quick yes it was good off of
00:31:52
doing like not a lot of like kind of it
00:31:54
was just more tempo-paced work so yeah
00:31:56
so I was pretty happy with that one and
00:31:58
are you hoping to have a family at some
00:32:00
point or where and where do you see that
00:32:01
fitting in like uh I mean it's it's a
00:32:04
it's hard and it's unfair because it's
00:32:05
something that male athletes don't have
00:32:07
to think about but I suppose you're like
00:32:08
well you know do I do it before Paris or
00:32:11
do I went to laughter Paris yeah no it
00:32:13
would definitely be after Paris um I
00:32:15
still feel like I'm 18. so I think I'm
00:32:18
ready for that yet that never changes no
00:32:21
yes so that will be yeah a wee bit after
00:32:24
that who knows when
00:32:26
um yeah knowing me I'll probably get hit
00:32:27
with like triplets all in one go so oh
00:32:30
my God amazing yeah I always say that to
00:32:32
my partner I'm like we're probably going
00:32:33
to end up with triplets that's the way
00:32:35
it's gonna go yeah um how did you guys
00:32:37
meet how long have you been together
00:32:38
yeah and we've been together for over
00:32:42
five years now I met through a friend in
00:32:44
Hawke's Bay over at Deco weekend it runs
00:32:46
just to and Gatsby so it was quite funny
00:32:48
he was actually hammered
00:32:51
so yeah great first impression um but
00:32:54
yeah kind of just we did distance for
00:32:56
about a year and then eventually I moved
00:32:57
up and yeah it's pretty good amazing is
00:33:00
he a runner or anything not at all no
00:33:02
it's running um he has tracked around
00:33:04
with me a few times and he's actually if
00:33:05
he could train he'd be a great Runner
00:33:07
but
00:33:08
um yeah that's not really his thing he
00:33:09
plays football so right
00:33:11
um yeah pretty he's pretty decent at
00:33:13
that too so that's always fun to watch
00:33:15
and kind of have some other sport to
00:33:17
kind of yeah I guess be involved in on
00:33:20
the side so yeah yeah
00:33:22
um is he quite supportive comes and
00:33:23
watches you at the track and yes
00:33:25
although if you're not into running it's
00:33:27
a bloody boring thing to watch is it yes
00:33:29
I think it's been interesting kind of
00:33:31
trying to explain explain to him how
00:33:33
running Works
00:33:34
um and I will I'll it's been really
00:33:37
funny actually what do you mean
00:33:39
explaining how it works well he's like
00:33:40
what have you say to me when he goes I
00:33:43
think he came down to one of the races
00:33:44
we had as a squad meet and one of my one
00:33:47
of the girls in the team kind of arrived
00:33:49
a wee bit late she wasn't racing she was
00:33:50
like oh what's Laura trying to run and
00:33:52
he's like I have no idea like how long
00:33:54
is this race so just completely had no
00:33:58
idea about the whole thing which is
00:33:59
quite funny but
00:34:01
um I've gotten into the habit of trying
00:34:03
to kind of give him here's my race plan
00:34:05
it might not work but now that you know
00:34:07
you'll kind of watch this and sort of be
00:34:10
able to see how it plays out and luckily
00:34:12
actually every single race plan has
00:34:14
worked out exactly to a t this season so
00:34:16
he's kind of seeing how that happens and
00:34:18
why things happen but I do get questions
00:34:20
like
00:34:21
you know why do you need a Pacer why
00:34:23
can't you just go and run and just do it
00:34:26
yourself which is actually a pretty
00:34:28
valid question and I actually found that
00:34:30
kind of hard to explain but
00:34:32
um yeah yeah how would you explain it
00:34:34
because it's not at least it's a
00:34:36
headwind you're not getting the same
00:34:38
sort of um it's not like cycling you
00:34:40
know where it makes a huge tangible
00:34:41
difference if you're sitting on
00:34:42
someone's wheel does it just take the
00:34:45
thinking out of it for you that you can
00:34:46
just like sit on someone's yeah I think
00:34:48
definitely taking the thinking out but
00:34:50
also what I've actually found and it's
00:34:52
actually helped me explain it wee bit
00:34:54
more is I've had a couple girls pace
00:34:55
through 800
00:34:57
um for the 1500 recently and I just I
00:35:00
feel more relaxed I'm like okay cool we
00:35:01
could just do a Sit run like them
00:35:04
um and just yeah just try stay as calm
00:35:07
as you can until it's then your turn to
00:35:08
like really go for it so and what's the
00:35:11
story with the Pacer like if you're a
00:35:12
Pacer do you have to pull out or if
00:35:14
you're feeling really good can you yeah
00:35:16
you can keep going no you can keep going
00:35:18
um yeah you can definitely keep going
00:35:20
and like obviously us who are being
00:35:22
paced we want you to go for as long as
00:35:24
you can yeah but yeah usually you'll
00:35:26
pull out at your at the distance that
00:35:29
you're meant to go to or you know if
00:35:31
you're really off the pace they might
00:35:33
jump out because they don't want to kind
00:35:34
of screw the race up for you or if
00:35:35
you're feeling really really good just
00:35:37
keep going there's definitely been times
00:35:40
where Pacers have tried to just keep it
00:35:42
going and they actually finish the race
00:35:43
I did that about a year or so ago for a
00:35:46
group of girls and oh that is a nasty
00:35:48
way to finish your race
00:35:49
but yeah it's pretty fun so yeah okay so
00:35:53
you've got to the um the end of the um
00:35:55
the New Zealand track season now and
00:35:57
you're unbeaten and you've got all the
00:35:58
national titles and everything so how
00:36:00
long do you what's what does a break
00:36:01
look like for you now right
00:36:03
um so I haven't run for the last four
00:36:06
days but then did my first kind of like
00:36:08
20 minute job today
00:36:09
um and then I'll just kind of run every
00:36:10
second day for at least the rest of this
00:36:13
week maybe another week depending on how
00:36:15
I'm feeling but it's one of those things
00:36:17
where you get to the end of the season
00:36:18
you're ready for a break but you're also
00:36:20
so ready to get back into training and
00:36:22
mileage and everything like in the
00:36:23
winter obviously was doing quite a lot
00:36:25
of miles and then as it got to track
00:36:27
season it was a little bit less and I
00:36:29
was like oh man I want to do more but I
00:36:31
know it's kind of silly to do that so
00:36:33
yeah
00:36:35
um you don't take a full few weeks off
00:36:38
so yeah just kind of slowly get back
00:36:40
into it again but without losing too
00:36:42
much Fitness otherwise that can
00:36:44
really hurt yeah what do you like before
00:36:46
a race are you a pain in the ass to be
00:36:48
around for a couple of days or are you
00:36:49
quite quite Zen about the whole thing I
00:36:52
mean there's been a lot of pressure on
00:36:53
you this year I guess of all years yeah
00:36:54
I try and be pretty relaxed and pretty
00:36:57
like
00:36:59
try not to be too serious because it
00:37:00
just kind of takes the fun out of it
00:37:01
although this year I've been quite
00:37:03
nervous for a lot of races which is
00:37:05
unusual for me because you've been like
00:37:07
red hot favorite for all of them no it's
00:37:10
probably more I just appreciate it
00:37:13
sure is probably the whole
00:37:15
I used to I I know it's weird I keep
00:37:18
saying all season long that I felt like
00:37:19
a phony but I was running these 1500
00:37:20
races that I just never felt like that
00:37:23
was my event
00:37:25
um maybe it's just because I for so long
00:37:27
had never really done them and I think
00:37:28
that's probably why like I never
00:37:30
even you if the race plan was going to
00:37:32
go right it's only three and three
00:37:34
quarter laps like you don't really have
00:37:35
a lot of time to just like rethink
00:37:38
things or change something up and once
00:37:40
you go you basically have to go like you
00:37:42
can't it's really hard to do like a
00:37:43
second surge or anything so just yeah I
00:37:46
guess I just hadn't really had that
00:37:47
confidence in myself over the distances
00:37:49
that I was running right yeah yeah well
00:37:52
it's all worked out remarkably well
00:37:53
hasn't it yeah yeah pretty pretty happy
00:37:55
I mean it couldn't really have gone too
00:37:57
much better and how's how's your mental
00:37:59
health been living there's been a lot a
00:38:01
lot of chat about that recently I mean
00:38:02
there was the um sad death last year of
00:38:04
Olivia podmore of cycling and women's
00:38:06
tennis has been a lot of focus on that
00:38:08
and gymnastics at the Olympics yeah it's
00:38:10
a lot of pressure at this level I
00:38:12
actually had a thought about this a week
00:38:13
while ago I think it might have been
00:38:15
just after sir Graham Douglas meet
00:38:18
obviously the level I met is still
00:38:20
relatively low compared to like world
00:38:22
world stands yeah domestic about Stone I
00:38:25
guess when you you're getting a lot of
00:38:27
people coming at you constantly and I
00:38:30
need like I'm not great at staying off
00:38:32
my phone so obviously you do scroll a
00:38:34
lot it's really hard so and actually
00:38:37
remember being like I think I was
00:38:39
talking to one of the girls on the team
00:38:40
actually just I was like I just feel
00:38:42
like it's a lot right now and I just
00:38:44
need to like throw my phone away and
00:38:46
yeah I I yeah that was probably the one
00:38:50
time where I was like okay now I kind of
00:38:52
understand what people say when and when
00:38:54
it gets a bit too much like sometimes it
00:38:56
is hard to understand until you've
00:38:58
actually seen it yourself or
00:39:01
being a part of something that that is
00:39:03
where that happens so yeah I mean I've
00:39:05
been pretty good like yeah been pretty
00:39:07
good but that was just kind of one sort
00:39:09
of element where I was like wow okay
00:39:11
this is not really that much that high
00:39:14
of a level but still is it can be hard
00:39:16
because you're managing yourself
00:39:17
basically yeah absolutely and what you
00:39:20
want the best for yourself what was it
00:39:21
on your phone was it articles about
00:39:23
yourself or was it comments what was it
00:39:25
oh no well I mean I guess I I do a lot
00:39:27
of things I'm notorious but probably not
00:39:30
saying no
00:39:32
um like obviously I have a job I'm
00:39:34
coaching I have like friends but you're
00:39:36
also trying to you're trying to promote
00:39:38
yourself to at the same time because
00:39:41
yeah at the end of the day you've got to
00:39:43
pay your bills so at some point like I'd
00:39:45
love to be able to go and run full time
00:39:47
for whatever that looks like and
00:39:50
yeah I guess you're trying to put
00:39:51
yourself out there
00:39:53
um as best you can but without yeah it's
00:39:56
really hard to explain like yeah you're
00:39:59
trying to self-promote without doing too
00:40:01
too much
00:40:02
um and that's been something that we've
00:40:04
tried to work work with with our group
00:40:06
too just to try and build that and
00:40:07
really create a cool woman's
00:40:10
um community of Runners um so yeah yeah
00:40:12
it's just a lot sometimes yeah yeah
00:40:15
you've got to learn how to say it's hard
00:40:17
though like you want to say no and you
00:40:18
know you should but then you don't want
00:40:20
to miss out on opportunities do you
00:40:21
exactly and that's like you know you
00:40:24
have really big time athletes and stuff
00:40:26
they have managers for that and yeah and
00:40:28
they just take care of all that kind of
00:40:30
stuff but um yeah when you're at that
00:40:32
lower level it's just kind of hustle
00:40:34
just keep keep going
00:40:36
have you got some good sponsors or yeah
00:40:39
we hear some really good supporters with
00:40:40
our group and then I also
00:40:42
um through science via New Balance and
00:40:44
New Balance has been um a kind of big
00:40:46
one for me over the years I'm just kind
00:40:48
of helping out with gear which goes a
00:40:51
long way especially when I'm running as
00:40:52
much as I am and you know have to throw
00:40:54
away a pair of shoes every eight weeks
00:40:56
kind of thing so yeah so that they've
00:40:58
been really awesome and we have a few
00:41:00
that are around our group too which
00:41:02
definitely helps when you're you know
00:41:04
just little bits here and there so yeah
00:41:06
yeah well I'm really excited to see what
00:41:09
um what is next for you um hopefully
00:41:11
that Olympic dream come wouldn't that be
00:41:13
something special yes yeah I know yeah
00:41:17
unbelievable and hopefully the world's
00:41:18
completely back to normal then so you
00:41:20
can get the full Olympic experience and
00:41:21
yep yeah definitely that would be pretty
00:41:24
cool I think
00:41:25
um Tokyo sounded like it was a really uh
00:41:28
hard on a lot of that challenging yeah
00:41:30
and very not quite the experience they
00:41:33
would have thought but at the same time
00:41:34
it's the Olympics obviously you know you
00:41:36
do what you've got to do to get there so
00:41:38
I think
00:41:39
um Paris will be amazing after the last
00:41:41
few years yeah 100 hey we're just in
00:41:44
with some quick fire questions
00:41:46
what are you what do you like to listen
00:41:48
to when you run or you listen to say you
00:41:50
out for that two hour long run on your
00:41:51
own do you have music on or yes or yeah
00:41:55
no I've got music on
00:41:56
um and I have a range of everything my
00:41:58
partner's pretty big into music so he'll
00:42:00
flick through a whole bunch of stuff but
00:42:02
um yeah I've got a whole list of random
00:42:04
songs random genres that I feel like
00:42:06
each song kind of has like a different
00:42:08
sort of thing that is in my memory
00:42:10
sometimes I'm like running and I'm
00:42:11
listening to it fully other times I'm
00:42:14
that beat has like made me imagine like
00:42:16
I'm running in the Olympics then all of
00:42:19
a sudden I drop a really quick K and I'm
00:42:21
like settle down Laura okay I'm down God
00:42:23
I need to get your playlist if it's
00:42:25
gonna get me running four minute team
00:42:26
case
00:42:27
um for all for it what's your favorite
00:42:28
place to run oh Hawke's Bay Home yeah I
00:42:32
just I really like it there I know so
00:42:34
many Loops
00:42:35
um there's yeah I just really like
00:42:37
running Hawkes Bay yeah yeah the
00:42:39
favorite show oh New Balance New Balance
00:42:41
yeah I actually really like the 1080s
00:42:43
I've had Achilles issues recently and
00:42:46
they've got a nice little soft back that
00:42:48
doesn't quite push on that part so yeah
00:42:50
yeah do you prefer to run alone or with
00:42:52
a crew ah definitely worth a crew we've
00:42:54
got a really great group of girls yeah
00:42:56
there are times where I definitely like
00:42:57
to run by myself and just kind of zone
00:42:59
out but um I just find when you can run
00:43:01
with a good group of people and get a
00:43:03
great convo going like yeah helps helps
00:43:05
pass the case doesn't it yeah definitely
00:43:07
do you prefer summer or winter for
00:43:08
rowing summer 100 really yes but you
00:43:11
live in Auckland now it's awful here in
00:43:13
summer it's so humid no I love the I
00:43:15
just like the heat
00:43:16
um yeah I'm such a summer person like
00:43:19
that's me to a tea I will be at the
00:43:21
beach any chance I can get so yeah
00:43:23
summer all right what's the uh what's
00:43:25
the worst injury you've had no day just
00:43:27
because it took so long to figure out
00:43:29
and like knees are so hard there's
00:43:31
always something going on with the knees
00:43:34
people assume that just because you
00:43:35
because you're running you are going to
00:43:37
end up with fact mates but I say to them
00:43:38
no I don't think that's necessarily the
00:43:39
case no I don't think so either I think
00:43:42
um if you can get like your strength and
00:43:43
all that stuff right
00:43:45
um You can do it fine um it's just
00:43:48
making sure and like being really aware
00:43:49
of your body and knowing when things are
00:43:51
off and I mean I have a good group of
00:43:53
people around me like I go see a
00:43:54
chiropractor in a sportsman or something
00:43:56
like the whole you know the list of
00:43:58
things but just to kind of keep me alive
00:44:00
I'm running so much that yes those
00:44:02
injuries will pop up because of just the
00:44:05
overused yeah it just it just happens so
00:44:07
yeah run as high is that real or a myth
00:44:09
oh definitely real yeah yeah oh that's
00:44:11
yeah because you're always bloody
00:44:13
winning uh yeah so do you think it'll
00:44:16
always be part of your life like even if
00:44:18
it's just um getting out for 10K at a
00:44:20
slow pace yes definitely
00:44:22
um yeah
00:44:23
like who knows we always kind of joke
00:44:25
about like being like the old ladies
00:44:27
like oh I remember back in my day I used
00:44:28
to run these kind of things and like
00:44:30
doing really slow laps around the track
00:44:32
but you know still enjoying your day
00:44:34
still doing it it's so good hey lovely
00:44:36
to meet you you too thanks for coming
00:44:38
over and best of luck for everything I
00:44:39

00:44:41

00:44:45
it to the end thanks very much hope you
00:44:46

00:44:48

00:44:50
of work to do to make it to the Olympics
00:44:51
