00:00:05
called Beetlejuice Beetlejuice uh Justin
00:00:07
is also a pivot fan that's how we met
00:00:09
him welcome to Pivot finally thanks for
00:00:12
having me thanks for having me on the
00:00:15
show I am a huge pivot fan we're
00:00:17
thrilled to have you here and we're
00:00:19
thrilled to have you with such success
00:00:20
Scott go for it if you were talking to a
00:00:23
group of analysts or investors about
00:00:25
what's going on in Hollywood how would
00:00:27
you describe the industry right now like
00:00:29
what do you coming what are your what
00:00:31
are your thoughts on scripted television
00:00:34
the streaming Wars what what do you give
00:00:37
us a state of play from Justin too
00:00:39
without disclosing anything to anyone
00:00:41
you know I I've gone out with a couple
00:00:43
projects this year that I think uh over
00:00:47
the last 10 years would have been um
00:00:49
easy buys you know like like this is a a
00:00:52
thoughtful interesting script that's
00:00:54
engaging um that has many elements that
00:00:57
we haven't seen on television and you
00:01:01
know a couple of those have not been
00:01:03
accepted and it was the first time where
00:01:05
I thought oh wow there really isn't an
00:01:07
appetite for um wonderful uh at the
00:01:11
moment that's not to say that it's I
00:01:14
don't know whose fault that is could be
00:01:15
my scripts could be that these are just
00:01:17
not good scripts and my my radar has
00:01:19
gone completely whack no I've heard that
00:01:21
from a lot of people you know I've heard
00:01:23
that from a lot of people yeah and I
00:01:25
it's not discriminating it's that they
00:01:27
don't know what's about to happen and so
00:01:28
they don't want to take yeah think I
00:01:30
think there's a moment of fear you know
00:01:32
it's it's like you know if you're and
00:01:34
I'm not a stock market guy but if you
00:01:35
were a stock market guy um like you guys
00:01:39
sort of follow um you're kind of just
00:01:41
going yeah okay look let's just we're
00:01:42
going to put our chips on cocacola we're
00:01:44
going to spread our chips you know
00:01:46
across you know whatever it is IBM and
00:01:48
apple and and you know they're they're
00:01:50
like we're not going to you know we're
00:01:52
not interested in a cool little startup
00:01:54
that might win a couple Golden Globes
00:01:56
anymore you know um uh we're going to
00:01:59
just play it safe I'm hearing a lot of
00:02:01
and on the writing front on those sort
00:02:04
of meetings that I've taken they're like
00:02:06
do you have anything and then they
00:02:07
basically without describing a medical
00:02:10
procedural drama set in a hospital in
00:02:13
Chicago they basically describe that and
00:02:15
you're going well you're just talking
00:02:16
about um you know ER gry's Anatomy or
00:02:20
something and you're thinking wait what
00:02:21
we're making we want to make those like
00:02:24
um but I think you know I'm an optimist
00:02:26
so I think those this will bounce back I
00:02:29
think
00:02:30
um I think you know the good news is is
00:02:33
we still have an enormous uh an enormous
00:02:36
amount of outlets an enormous amount of
00:02:37
channels and frankly I think it you know
00:02:40
it it gives YouTube an opportunity to
00:02:42
play you know uh in a bigger they still
00:02:45
have a big pot of money I think that
00:02:46
they could play with and do some
00:02:47
interesting things or you know I still
00:02:50
don't quite understand how Tik Tock is
00:02:52
going to make some money but you know
00:02:54
they're certainly positioned to what do
00:02:56
you do when you're signing onto a
00:02:57
project now not just theaters versus
00:03:00
streaming but where to go cuz you you
00:03:03
you have a little more uh agency cuz you
00:03:06
do more stuff right well Scott's the big
00:03:08
Hollywood Mogul now he's the one selling
00:03:10
scripts getting green in the room left
00:03:12
and right% I'm glad you finally
00:03:14
acknowledge that I'm glad you're in
00:03:15
touch with your feelings are not
00:03:16
threatened by our friendship
00:03:18
Justin um and I'm out here in the desert
00:03:22
just looking for a drop of water when
00:03:23
you just said YouTube like when you're
00:03:25
making project decisions you know it was
00:03:27
a while when the tech companies came in
00:03:29
and now they're buyers right apple is a
00:03:31
real buyer of pretty good stuff right
00:03:34
some of it good some of it not but a lot
00:03:35
of it good absolutely where do you how
00:03:38
do you make a decision of who you're
00:03:40
going to affiliate with now because
00:03:41
there so much well now we're starting
00:03:44
choices and at the same time you know
00:03:46
without describing what each
00:03:47
characteristic is I think each place has
00:03:51
um you start to go oh this feels like it
00:03:53
wants to be at ex you know that's the
00:03:55
decision that everyone makes you so a
00:03:57
script comes in or or is created and
00:04:00
then you go all right where are we going
00:04:01
to take it and they go you know who
00:04:02
would be and then you sort of isolate
00:04:04
your three best buyers for it you know
00:04:06
if you have a hard charging
00:04:09
R-rated comedy um that's that's really
00:04:12
going to be you know um trying to find
00:04:15
the the edges of the room um comedically
00:04:18
you're not going to probably go to Apple
00:04:20
with it necessarily because um you know
00:04:23
they're I think they're you know their
00:04:24
businesses iPhones they you know they
00:04:26
don't want to do anything that messes
00:04:27
that up nor should they um uh you're G
00:04:29
to probably go to Netflix because that's
00:04:31
Ted Sandos who's who's shown to have
00:04:33
some some real spine when it comes to
00:04:35
putting edgy comedy out there um so it's
00:04:40
it's um it's sort of like that I don't
00:04:43
know and for dramas I don't know you
00:04:44
think you know well this is a very peon
00:04:47
you know um maybe you know a a much
00:04:50
harder needle to thread uh drama about a
00:04:54
blah blah blah well we might go to
00:04:56
effects with that because um you know
00:04:59
you know only make a couple things a
00:05:01
year uh their output isn't as high as
00:05:03
Netflix but but FX this really feels
00:05:06
like it belongs with them you you want
00:05:08
to find your partner I mean it's it's
00:05:10
kind of like dating you know um if you
00:05:13
want you know some sort of a you know
00:05:16
whatever you're you know whatever you're
00:05:18
if you're wanting to swipe right or left
00:05:19
you know you want to sort of find the
00:05:21
right um You just want to find the right
00:05:24
partnership because inevitably if you if
00:05:26
if in those situations where you make a
00:05:29
piece of content which the word I hate
00:05:32
um uh and it's not a happy marriage it
00:05:35
will not be a successful show you know
00:05:37
you want everybody singing in the same
00:05:40
key if that makes any sense when when we
00:05:43
talk we talk about AI all the time on
00:05:46
the show and there's been a lot of news
00:05:47
in Hollywood this week California
00:05:48
governor Gavin Nome just signed a pair
00:05:50
of bills that will give actors more
00:05:52
protection over their digital likenesses
00:05:54
landscape plans to start using
00:05:56
generative AI in the creation of its new
00:05:57
movies and TV shows according to the
00:05:59
Wall Street Journal as a writer and and
00:06:02
and particularly as a writer but also as
00:06:04
an actor how do you look at these things
00:06:06
it was a big contention during the the
00:06:09
strikes um you how do you look at AI
00:06:12
right now and do you use it what do you
00:06:14
like about it what you know and again
00:06:17
full skit credit to my friend Scott he
00:06:19
you know when I would hear you guys talk
00:06:21
about it like this is coming this is a
00:06:23
tool this is a thing um I'm writing a
00:06:25
script currently I reached out to Scott
00:06:27
and I said okay what do I download how
00:06:29
does it work is it private you know like
00:06:32
what are they taking from me what are
00:06:33
they not and he said probably the the
00:06:36
most accurate thing he says it's you
00:06:38
know AI as far as writing goes and as
00:06:41
far as you know being able to write the
00:06:44
right prompts for it is largely pretty
00:06:46
anod so I dropped in it took me a while
00:06:49
to figure out you know what parameters I
00:06:52
wanted to sort of put in and what
00:06:53
prompts I needed to give it to sort of
00:06:55
really get where and where it was going
00:06:58
um and gave me back something exactly as
00:07:01
Scott predicted which was anod it was
00:07:04
very kind of vanilla um but it had a um
00:07:09
it had a couple little toe holds in it
00:07:12
where I thought oh this is that's
00:07:13
interesting I hadn't considered that so
00:07:16
it
00:07:17
was in the few instances where I've sort
00:07:21
of used it or you
00:07:23
know had a bit of writer block and going
00:07:26
oh maybe um it's kind of like a writing
00:07:29
partner in a way and that it it can kick
00:07:30
back an idea that you weren't
00:07:32
necessarily
00:07:33
expecting um yeah so yeah ideas it's
00:07:37
ideas that you didn't yes it's ideas
00:07:38
that I didn't I didn't think it likewise
00:07:41
can be helpful in saying in just
00:07:43
answering simple questions in a way that
00:07:45
Google doesn't you know like um work on
00:07:48
this period thing and I needed to know
00:07:50
sort of the origins of the word [ __ ] and
00:07:52
and um you know whether this thing
00:07:54
whether that word Works in a in a period
00:07:56
piece you know and so in this time frame
00:08:00
um give me examples of the time you know
00:08:02
that you know that the word [ __ ] was
00:08:03
used or first examp whatever um and it
00:08:05
sort of just gets to the point a little
00:08:07
quicker than than than Google does you
00:08:09
know um with citations ET oh wow I'm
00:08:12
excited to see that now I'm excited to
00:08:14
see that anyway Justin tho you are we
00:08:16
are your biggest fan actually and you
00:08:18
can catch him if you want to see him in
00:08:21
Beetle juu Beetlejuice and he's he's
00:08:24
terrific in it it's really great thank
00:08:26
you so much thanks Justin I want to come
00:08:28
back Scott and I want to talk about my
00:08:30
feelings later thanks gang
