industry has always gone through cycles

and each cycle uh after the downturn

goes through a period of expansion which

is larger than the period before it uh I

believe here in the next year or two

we'll begin the U uh a an expansion in
00:00:56
our industry which will be the single
00:00:57
largest expansion in aviation history

um if you look at the Baseline
00:01:02
demographics of the industry the growth
00:01:05
in uh uh worldwide GDP the growth in per
00:01:08
capita GDP the growth in the Emerging
00:01:11
Markets uh we're no longer going to be
00:01:14
uh an industry that is that is centered
00:01:16
around the United States and Western
00:01:17
Europe which is really the only two
00:01:19
markets where the industry is mature the
00:01:22
rest of the world is going to come up to
00:01:24
the same level of uh use of Aviation uh
00:01:27
that both Western Europe and the United
00:01:30
states do today uh and that's going to
00:01:31
provide for an underlying uh strength in
00:01:35
the in the uh in the growth of the
00:01:36
industry yeah so if you think about it
00:01:38
um clearly uh China is uh is just an
00:01:41
enormous emerging power um and a a very
00:01:45
large uh uh GDP and a and a and a
00:01:48
growing
00:01:50
GDP um an or a country who's who's been
00:01:54
able to sustain large single-digit or
00:01:56
small double digit growth for years and
00:01:59
has has had to manage the rate of growth
00:02:03
um which is a a very high class problem
00:02:05
to have uh China is uh is a tremendous
00:02:09
Market it's also a tremendous partner uh
00:02:12
and it's a tremendous uh growth space
00:02:13
for for us at GE and GE Aviation systems
00:02:19
especially so just recently uh GE
00:02:21
Aviation systems uh announced a joint
00:02:24
venture with its avionics business with
00:02:27
Avic which is with the largest uh
00:02:28
Avionics manufactur in in China and it's
00:02:32
through that joint venture that we will
00:02:34
uh be a part of that our content will be
00:02:36
a part of the comac 919 aircraft which
00:02:39
will be China's first uh real Western uh
00:02:42
narrow body uh that airplane will be uh
00:02:46
an airplane developed in China with many
00:02:48
Western Partners um and our uh our CFM
00:02:52
engine of which GE is a 5050 joint
00:02:54
venture partner with snma will also be
00:02:56
the engine that powers that aircraft and
00:02:58
we think that that aircraft will will uh
00:03:00
do very well and be a big part of the
00:03:02
aviation landscape in the future uh that
00:03:04
aircraft will is scheduled the first fly
00:03:06
between 2015 and
00:03:08
2016 um but it will be um it'll be
00:03:11
China's first four-way into a large
00:03:13
narrow body aircraft um that will be uh
00:03:16
uh that could be widely sold to the rest
00:03:18
of the
00:03:21
world I think when you think about China
00:03:23
what you have to think about is the
00:03:24
relative state of maturity um and so uh
00:03:29
China has not developed a lot of
00:03:31
aircraft for a western market and
00:03:33
certified them uh to Western standards
00:03:36
however the other thing you have to
00:03:37
think about with China is their ability
00:03:40
uh to overcome those obstacles and the
00:03:42
rate at which they can overcome those
00:03:44
obstacles I mean China has basically
00:03:46
done in the last 10 years what it's
00:03:48
taken our Western uh Nations 50 years to
00:03:51
accomplish and that rate uh of change
00:03:55
and the amount of intellect that they
00:03:57
can pour into that uh requirement for
00:04:00
change is tremendous uh very very
00:04:05
powerful Brazil is a a fabulous Aviation
00:04:08
market and it continues to develop um
00:04:10
the Brazilian economy is very strong I
00:04:12
think the the Brazilians have done a
00:04:14
phenomenal job there um you see the
00:04:16
growth the liberalization of the
00:04:18
airlines there and the growth of per
00:04:20
capita GDP and where they intersect you
00:04:22
see the enormous explosion in in air
00:04:24
traffic um you know the largest carriers
00:04:27
in in Brazil still have 15 to 20% and
00:04:29
their passengers as firsttime passengers
00:04:31
every single flight and that's very very
00:04:34
powerful uh Brazil a country of 197
00:04:36
million people is a country that uh will
00:04:39
continue to have a very large uh
00:04:41
Aviation demographic also the distances
00:04:43
between the cities in Brazil uh will
00:04:46
also uh Demand air travel uh the other
00:04:49
nations that are extremely uh uh
00:04:51
important to us as the growing nations
00:04:52
are uh was formerly Eastern Europe the
00:04:54
Eastern European Central European
00:04:56
countries uh those markets to continue
00:04:58
to develop and the
00:05:00
and the uh the economies of those
00:05:02
Nations continue to be um to weather
00:05:04
this storm and will continue to be
00:05:06
strong in the future countries like
00:05:07
Poland the Czech Republic Etc and so
00:05:10
we're we're doing um work with those
00:05:13
Nations as well we have um engineering
00:05:16
and Technology Centers in India uh in
00:05:19
Poland in Mexico in China uh and we uh
00:05:23
recently purchased a an engine
00:05:25
manufacturer in the Czech Republic uh
00:05:28
Walter which is a 95y old engine
00:05:30
manufacturer and that through that
00:05:33
acquisition we will be able to grow into
00:05:35
an adjacent space for us in G aviation
00:05:37
in a small turbo prop
00:05:41
Market think about it from a standpoint
00:05:43
of of Market maturity right so so in Air
00:05:48
transport um the um uh Western Europe
00:05:53
and the United States are mature markets
00:05:56
in business Aviation Western Europe and
00:05:58
the United States are mature markets but
00:06:01
really nowhere else in the world um
00:06:04
business Mark the business Aviation
00:06:05
Market general aviation Market is fueled
00:06:07
by basically two things uh per capital
00:06:10
wealth and the and the security concerns
00:06:14
and so that market is is virtually
00:06:18
non-existent in many nations of the
00:06:20
world where you have a tremendous growth
00:06:22
in wealth and that that will be a
00:06:24
booming industry in the years to come I
00:06:26
think that the Air transport Market is
00:06:28
just purely function of where uh per
00:06:32
capita GDP reaches a certain point and
00:06:35
if you have a open liberalization of the
00:06:37
Air transport industry in that in that
00:06:39
uh country for instance India then you
00:06:41
just get the explosion of Air transport
00:06:43
and and that's going to continue to to
00:06:45
occur
00:06:46
wealth uh the growth of wealth in
00:06:49
Nations tends to drive people into uh
00:06:51
into more urban centers uh away from
00:06:54
their homes uh their historic homes as
00:06:57
it did in the United States and as it
00:06:58
did in Europe and uh and then you you
00:07:01
create a uh an industry around the
00:07:04
travel of those people to and from their
00:07:06
homes or between business locations
00:07:09
India for instance you know you have the
00:07:10
major markets in Delhi and Mumbai and
00:07:13
Bombay and Chennai Etc and there are
00:07:16
some very new airports there and some
00:07:17
very capable carriers there and we'll
00:07:19
continue to see that growth because
00:07:21
let's face it there's there's still a
00:07:22
billion people in China or in
00:07:26
India sure well I mean one of the most
00:07:28
exciting things is the is the um is the
00:07:32
work that we have
00:07:33
ongoing um to try to bring open rotor
00:07:37
technology to the commercial narrow body
00:07:40
Market uh we have a uh we have a a
00:07:43
current test with NASA between GE and
00:07:46
NASA using the uh NASA Glenn facility in
00:07:49
Ohio and we're we have an open rotor rig
00:07:52
test there that's uh we're learning
00:07:55
about new blade shapes we're learning
00:07:56
about how to make open rotor viable on a
00:07:59
commercial Air transport aircraft um we
00:08:03
flew an open rotor in the mid 80s and
00:08:06
it's not a matter of being able to fly
00:08:08
it it's a matter of being able or
00:08:11
whether or not it'll be tremendously
00:08:12
efficient it will be tremendously
00:08:14
efficient and we have proven that we can
00:08:15
fly it it's can you make it reliable
00:08:18
enough and can you overcome the
00:08:19
installation issues related to a very
00:08:21
large fan on the back of the aircraft
00:08:23
but that is tremendously exciting
00:08:24
because you know when you talk about the
00:08:26
advantages of open rotor you're talking
00:08:28
about another incremental 15% uh lower
00:08:31
fuel burn which is lower carbon
00:08:33
emissions as well so if you can overcome
00:08:35
the noise issues and the insulation
00:08:36
issues which are not trivial uh but that
00:08:39
would be an exciting step function that
00:08:41
would be as big a change to airplanes as
00:08:44
uh airplanes going to high bypass fans
00:08:46
for instance open rotor would be um uh
00:08:49
it would be a uh think about a
00:08:51
conventional jet installation on the um
00:08:53
aft mounted typically on the aircraft uh
00:08:56
and two blade sets uh with eight blades
00:08:59
each counter rotating and the blades
00:09:01
being fully articulated and so those
00:09:03
blade sets um give you an infinite
00:09:06
bypass uh ratio on the on the engine and
00:09:09
it it dramatically improves fuel burn
00:09:12
and so um you know it becomes a a very
00:09:14
exciting new new technology new space I
00:09:17
think the other areas that are very
00:09:19
exciting around um flight management
00:09:21
system and uh air traffic management and
00:09:24
the use of what's called r&p or required
00:09:26
navigation procedures and r P approaches
00:09:30
allow us to do continuous descent
00:09:31
approaches today when an airplane comes
00:09:33
out of altitude it wants to come out of
00:09:35
altitude at a constant rated descent at
00:09:38
a con at what's what is the optimum um
00:09:42
of lift over drag so the most fuel
00:09:44
efficient descent possible and from high
00:09:47
altitudes you're talking about descents
00:09:48
that last 100 miles now today what
00:09:51
happens is you get a descent and you get
00:09:53
a descent and you get a descent but in
00:09:55
between those descents you level off and
00:09:56
you increase your fuel burn and you are
00:09:58
burning more fuel at lower altitudes in
00:10:01
the future we'll be able to to uh use
00:10:04
time-based
00:10:05
trajectory and predict the threshold
00:10:08
Crossing time of the aircraft at the
00:10:10
threshold of the runway plus or minus 5
00:10:12
to 7 seconds and when you can do that
00:10:15
when you can get that level of control
00:10:17
then you just dramatically improve the
00:10:18
efficiency of the
00:10:20
system if all aircraft were capable of
00:10:23
r&p today you could save maybe as much
00:10:25
as 12% total worldwide fuel burn now

that's a huge number because air traffic
00:10:30
management you know will spend billions
00:10:32
of dollars to develop a new engine uh or
00:10:34
to develop new technology the air
00:10:36
Frameworks will spend tens of billions
00:10:37
of dollars to develop a brand new
00:10:39
airplane and we we lose much of that
00:10:41
benefit with people flying in the wrong
00:10:44
direction um with people uh doing
00:10:47
intermediate level offs with people uh
00:10:49
in holding patterns and things that
00:10:52
really diminish the efficiency and the
00:10:53
productivity of the airplane it's all
00:10:56
about making the airplane as productive
00:10:57
and efficient as possible
00:10:59
and so that's what we're
00:11:03
about you know I think if you think
00:11:04
about the the future of Aviation you
00:11:06
know in in the times of the
00:11:09
downturn it's always easy to become
00:11:11
convinced that that uh you know
00:11:14
aviation's growth was uh was yesterday's
00:11:17
phenomenon it won't be the phenomenon of
00:11:19
the future and I think the reality is is
00:11:22
that in in every in every
00:11:26
economy uh where you where you have a of
00:11:29
developed uh where a country becomes a
00:11:31
developed Nation um you see the
00:11:34
tremendous growth in aviation and I
00:11:36
think that that that Aviation is an
00:11:39
extremely exciting place to be
00:11:41
Innovations still continue at a at a
00:11:43
record pace and there's still tremendous
00:11:45
gain to be had uh we are far from being
00:11:49
done uh with innovating airplanes and
00:11:52
they will continue to be innovate to be
00:11:54
more and more efficient as as we go
00:11:57
