Chris, a personal shopper for a wealthy family, reveals how he began stealing items to sell for profit. He explains how he sold duplicates of expensive items without the family noticing, and the lengths he went to cover his tracks when they suspected theft.

The episode highlights the risks both men faced, including close calls with authorities and the pressure of maintaining their illegal activities. John's story culminates in a tense moment with customs agents, while Chris navigates the challenges of being suspected by his employers.

Listeners are left with a sense of the thrill and danger involved in their stories, as both men reflect on their pasts and the consequences of their actions.

TL;DR

John smuggled drugs for 20 years; Chris stole from a billionaire family.

00:00:20
it's Cooks this is not my fault that I
00:00:22
stole this car it's conmen this is my
00:00:25
chance I can be rich for life it's w to
00:00:29
be King Pins we all made together
00:00:32
$500,000 and queen pins it was basically
00:00:36
a lounge of
00:00:37
criminals these are stories of the
00:00:39
nonviolent lucky punks and Robin hoods
00:00:43
that Dodge the law I could have gone to
00:00:45
prison not jail prison because here's
00:00:48
the situation baby it's only a matter of
00:00:51
time before the statute of limitations
00:00:54
is up and technically you might walk
00:00:56
away scotf free but don't take her from
00:00:59
me guys I'm obviously no lawyer this is
00:01:04
statute of
00:01:12
limitations what's up it's your boy Mike
00:01:15
The Situation Santino welcome to the
00:01:18
show where we find folks who Once Upon a
00:01:20
Time committed a crime this episode we
00:01:23
have a military man who took the term
00:01:25
high seas a little too literal and a
00:01:28
dude whose job made feel like Christmas
00:01:31
every day when he played a little game
00:01:33
called one for you and one for me we go
00:01:36
now to the high seas like the wicked
00:01:38
high and a guy who spent 20 years
00:01:41
smuggling drugs across the world but he
00:01:45
sailed past the police long enough to
00:01:47
get away with it all meet John my name
00:01:51
is John and I smuggle drugs for 20 years
00:01:54
while I was in the US Merchant Marine
00:01:57
and I smuggled marijuana I smuggled h
00:01:59
ashes and I smuggle cocaine and I never
00:02:03
got
00:02:05
caught in 1980 I joined the Merchant
00:02:08
Marine when you're on a boat it gets
00:02:11
rough you get
00:02:12
seasick but marijuana the THC relieves
00:02:17
the nausea and so there's a joke that's
00:02:20
why they call it the high seas and my
00:02:23
first foreign trip was to portter Prince
00:02:27
Haiti and that's the first time I was
00:02:30
involved in drug
00:02:31
smuggling first thing you do when you
00:02:33
get to foreign Port is you find a good
00:02:36
cab driver he took us somewhere near
00:02:40
pter Prince and there was no street
00:02:43
lights or anything like that we gave him
00:02:46
some money and he took off and a little
00:02:50
while later he came back and he had a
00:02:52
few ounces of weed it was good stuff we
00:02:56
brought it back to the boat and so
00:02:58
wherever we went we would score weed
00:03:01
just for the
00:03:02
seasickness I never smuggled for cartels
00:03:06
it everything was for personal use
00:03:09
anyway I started getting trips to like
00:03:11
the Mediterranean to Africa one of those
00:03:15
trips we uh went to abigan and the Ivory
00:03:18
Coast three other guys they went to
00:03:21
score weed in Aban and they got set up
00:03:25
and uh they got busted the company had
00:03:28
to pay a ton of money money to get them
00:03:30
out and of course these guys were all
00:03:33
Academy graduates and they lost their
00:03:35
licenses and
00:03:38
everything I learned one thing when I
00:03:40
first started working if you hang out
00:03:43
with Americans when you're in a foreign
00:03:45
Port they're just going to get you in
00:03:47
trouble they're going to get drunk
00:03:49
they're going to do some stupid you can
00:03:51
get screwed over by
00:03:53
association like one time we went to
00:03:55
Morocco and uh that was probably the
00:03:59
first trip where I kind of led the
00:04:02
adventure to go score as soon as the
00:04:05
ship hit the dock we're on the beach
00:04:07
it's like 6:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning
00:04:11
we got us a great cab driver first he
00:04:14
takes us to a coffee shop and he takes
00:04:17
the money and he leaves and while he was
00:04:20
gone a police officer walked in so my
00:04:24
two friends they're like freaked out we
00:04:26
get back in the cab and he actually
00:04:29
hadn't got anything but he knew where he
00:04:30
was going to go and so he took us to an
00:04:33
area and then of course he got out came
00:04:36
back a little while later and we had
00:04:39
several ounces of hashish my friends are
00:04:42
afraid to touch it right cuz they're
00:04:45
they think they're going to get busted
00:04:46
by even touching it and I'm just like
00:04:49
give me that basically I had the balls
00:04:52
to do it you know a lot of people they
00:04:54
want to get high but they don't have the
00:04:56
balls you're lucky that you had someone
00:04:58
like me who did so I was sticking in the
00:05:01
pocket of my jacket and so we go back on
00:05:04
board the ship we had to smuggle it out
00:05:06
of Morocco you got to put it somewhere
00:05:09
where the Customs agents can't find it
00:05:12
the best place for that is a chain
00:05:14
locker and so what we do is we take 35
00:05:18
mm film bottles and we stuff it full of
00:05:21
the hash and then hide it behind the
00:05:24
angle iron so it's got a horrible odor
00:05:27
already they just raised the a hatch
00:05:30
look down in there okay looks great and
00:05:33
if they bring a dog aboard the ship you
00:05:35
sprinkle pepper in different locations
00:05:38
on board the ship and when that dog gets
00:05:41
a snoot full of pepper that dog ain't
00:05:44
worth a damn the rest of the day you
00:05:46
know you're in
00:05:48
business you could have smuggled pounds
00:05:52
kilos but of course we never did that
00:05:55
because if you're smuggling large
00:05:56
amounts that's how people get busted and
00:06:00
once I became a licensed officer I was
00:06:03
kind of like the Kingpin you would say
00:06:05
it was like in ' 85 I got married for
00:06:07
the first time and we had a baby and you
00:06:10
know once you have family and you have
00:06:13
other people that can be affected by
00:06:15
your actions you know you think twice
00:06:17
about it but I ain't going to lie I'd
00:06:20
gotten away with it every single time
00:06:22
for so long I still continue to do it
00:06:26
when I started smuggling cocaine the
00:06:28
first place was out of Japan and I flew
00:06:32
back to Hawaii I noticed when I was
00:06:35
wearing the uniform when I went through
00:06:38
customs they didn't even give me a
00:06:40
second look they see me wave me through
00:06:43
I'd put my bag on the
00:06:45
conveyor they'd let it go through and
00:06:48
I'd walk down the other end pick it up
00:06:51
and so I was like
00:06:53
wow I bet I could freaking smuggle Coke
00:06:56
like this in my bag of course of course
00:06:59
I'm only going to start with a small
00:07:01
amount like a few grams that went
00:07:04
through no problem and so then once you
00:07:07
get that through you get a little
00:07:08
Boulder you may get a couple ounces and
00:07:11
then that works and then you end up with
00:07:15
a whole key the most ever smuggle Like
00:07:18
Cocaine was uh like a kilo like this
00:07:21
much something like
00:07:24
that when I was in Rio de Janeiro I flew
00:07:28
back off of that trip I brought a key
00:07:30
back with me there uh Panama well Panama
00:07:34
you could it was so easy to get there
00:07:37
they didn't have hash in Panama it's
00:07:39
just cocaine and weed and you just keep
00:07:41
it on board the ship on a trip back from
00:07:44
the Mediterranean we got some hashes and
00:07:47
we're going into New York and of course
00:07:50
in New York they're going to bring dogs
00:07:51
on you know that so you've already gone
00:07:54
around with your pepper you got your
00:07:56
stuff all stashed in the locker and
00:07:58
everything I didn't think about it I I
00:08:01
was using a 3/8 in brass spitting that
00:08:04
you get from the engine room and using
00:08:07
that to smoke the hash in I had taken
00:08:09
the uh pipe and I'd stuck it in my
00:08:12
pocket so Customs came on you know and
00:08:15
I'm out doing my thing they're doing
00:08:17
their thing searching and checking
00:08:19
everybody so they can go ashore and
00:08:22
leave and stuff like that anyway then it
00:08:24
comes my turn so they take me in my
00:08:27
stateroom I'm wearing these a red
00:08:29
welder's gloves I knew they were going
00:08:32
to ask me to empty my pockets but when
00:08:35
they got in there they're raising the
00:08:37
matresses and looking in the drawers and
00:08:40
stuff like that
00:08:42
so my hand brushes my pocket and I
00:08:45
realized oh my God I got this freaking
00:08:48
pipe in my damn pocket and so they
00:08:52
weren't paying attention to me so I took
00:08:53
it out and I couldn't move because it
00:08:56
the room was small and I couldn't go
00:08:58
anywhere without getting their attention
00:09:00
so I just stuffed it in the uh in the
00:09:03
glove anyway they looked around and they
00:09:06
didn't see anything and so they were all
00:09:08
happy and and so they're like okay we're
00:09:12
done and so we all get up and we start
00:09:14
to walk out and one of them reaches over
00:09:18
and picks up that welder's glove and he
00:09:22
holds it up and the pipe comes rolling
00:09:25
out I I was shaking my boots cuz I
00:09:29
thought I was
00:09:30
screwed oh ship that's right guys
00:09:33
another pun by the situation but the
00:09:35
gloves are off the heat is on and Jon's
00:09:39
standing there with the authorities
00:09:40
holding his pipe he thinks he's screwed
00:09:44
I think he's screwed but what he doesn't
00:09:46
know is someone's about to bail him out
00:09:48
find out how John escapes his sticky
00:09:51
situation on statute of
00:09:53
limitations
00:09:56
next we are back with more statute of
00:09:59
limitations where my man
00:10:01
John he's in deep trouble while trying
00:10:04
to smuggle drugs on board a ship some
00:10:07
incriminating evidence lands right at
00:10:09
the custom agent's feet so how's this
00:10:12
budding Pablo Escobar survived to tell
00:10:14
his story he's got an unlikely Ally in
00:10:17
high places watch this so Customs came
00:10:21
on you know and I'm out doing my thing
00:10:24
they're doing their thing sech in and
00:10:26
one of them reaches over and picks up
00:10:29
that welder's glove and the pipe comes
00:10:32
rolling
00:10:33
out I was shaking my boots cuz I thought
00:10:37
I I thought I was screwed we still had a
00:10:40
bunch of hash on board down in the chain
00:10:42
Locker so you know I the last thing I
00:10:45
wanted was these guys to have a reason
00:10:48
to start checking other things they were
00:10:50
like hey what's this I don't know I've
00:10:53
never seen it before where did this come
00:10:55
from and I'm like dude I I don't know
00:10:57
anything about it and they're like n
00:11:00
this something's wrong here we're going
00:11:02
to the captain about this and we all go
00:11:05
to the captain uh Captain look what we
00:11:07
found in his State
00:11:10
room and so the captain says so what
00:11:12
it's a 3/8 in brass spitting we got a
00:11:15
hundred of them in the engine room if
00:11:16
you want another one go get one and
00:11:19
they're like well no uh it has a screen
00:11:22
in it and we can see something's been
00:11:24
burnt on that screen and the captain's
00:11:28
like huh
00:11:29
do youall have anything else or or is
00:11:31
this it and they're like well no that we
00:11:34
just found that he's like okay well
00:11:36
great he goes I'm busy right now and so
00:11:39
uh y'all get your asses off my ship he
00:11:41
goes I don't have time for this B they
00:11:43
left the boat and I got off scott free
00:11:47
and that was the closest uh I'd ever
00:11:50
come to uh getting caught I did 20 years
00:11:52
in the mercher Marine uh I retired and
00:11:56
uh and I would never ever smuggle drugs
00:12:00
again that's something I did when I was
00:12:02
young and now I'm old I just ain't got
00:12:06
to do it anymore you know they have
00:12:08
their shows like Locked Up Abroad and
00:12:11
and I Almost Got Away With It And I've
00:12:14
always watched those and I'm like what
00:12:15
in the hell were they going to do
00:12:17
someone who actually got away with it
00:12:19
for 20 years and that was me and
00:12:23
actually finally found the
00:12:26
show yo big props to John for riding the
00:12:30
ship and getting his life together he
00:12:32
avoided jail time and served up a whale
00:12:35
of a tail baby wo now that's fire now
00:12:39
it's about to get personal this is a
00:12:41
story of a Cali dude who started as a
00:12:43
personal shopper and became a secret
00:12:46
seller of stolen stuff it could have
00:12:49
landed him in prison but maybe he sold
00:12:51
his soul to the devil because he's here
00:12:54
to share his secret meet
00:12:57
Chris
00:13:01
hi my name is Chris and in 2012 I stole
00:13:05
a lot from a billionaire family that I
00:13:07
was a personal shopper
00:13:10
for in La at that time my parents they
00:13:13
scrapped up all the money they could
00:13:15
middle class family and they sent me to
00:13:18
this school that was really expensive
00:13:20
and I was just surrounded by really rich
00:13:23
kids so clearly I didn't have nearly as
00:13:26
much money as they did but I had had my
00:13:29
own style I could go to Vintage shops I
00:13:31
go to pawn shops there's a lot more work
00:13:34
but I needed a job after school and a
00:13:37
friend of a friend hooked me up with
00:13:39
this gig working for this billionaire
00:13:41
family where I would buy all their stuff
00:13:44
so the dad was a Real Estate Mogul he
00:13:46
was flying around the world all the time
00:13:49
never home neglected the wife neglected
00:13:51
the two kids the wife just she didn't
00:13:54
know what to do at the time she just
00:13:55
bought a bunch of stuff and ate a lot of
00:13:57
brunch the kids same thing handbags
00:14:02
jewelry clothes the whole nine your
00:14:05
typical
00:14:07
influencers they need therapy
00:14:10
man so one time I bought the wife this
00:14:13
handbag she really liked and she went on
00:14:15
vacation and lost it so ever since then
00:14:18
she's like two of everything Chris two
00:14:21
for me two for the kids everything it
00:14:24
got to the point where I had to store
00:14:26
this stuff in my apartment boxes
00:14:28
everywhere where boxes to the ceiling I
00:14:30
couldn't even get in my own kitchen but
00:14:32
then I realized they didn't even use one
00:14:35
of this stuff so there's two of
00:14:38
everything I could sell one of them they
00:14:41
wouldn't even
00:14:42
notice so I decided to give it a try I
00:14:45
grabbed this $200 vintage shirt they had
00:14:48
sitting around for months and I went
00:14:50
into a pawn shop I was was nervous about
00:14:53
it I pulled the trigger got an extra 200
00:14:56
bucks so the next few weeks I couldn't
00:15:00
sleep like are they going to ask about
00:15:03
this shirt am I going to get fired am I
00:15:05
going to go to jail but then nothing
00:15:08
happened they didn't ask me about it
00:15:10
they didn't care they didn't notice I
00:15:12
was in the clear baby drink some
00:15:15
meat so the way I thought if I could get
00:15:19
away with a $200
00:15:21
t-shirt why not $1,000 bracelet why not
00:15:24
a $5,000 handbag so the next two months
00:15:29
boom boom boom I was in every pawn shop
00:15:32
selling every duplicate I had I was
00:15:34
making money and at one point I sold two
00:15:37
of the same handbag and just my luck the
00:15:40
wife wanted it and I didn't know where I
00:15:43
sold it how could I remember I didn't
00:15:45
write it down I I was just making money
00:15:48
and she wanted it she had this big party
00:15:51
that night it went well with her dress
00:15:53
or something I don't know but she called
00:15:55
me four times she's like Chris where
00:15:58
where is this bag I don't see it
00:16:00
anywhere and I'm driving around town I
00:16:03
can't find it I must have gone into six
00:16:05
shops I found the shop where I sold one
00:16:07
of them and they sold it great awesome
00:16:11
I'm going to jail I kept going that day
00:16:13
I went into three more shops I find the
00:16:16
secondhand bag it's on the shelf and I'm
00:16:19
like hey can I buy that and the guy's
00:16:20
like didn't you sell this to us like a
00:16:23
week ago I'm like no no no it's it's
00:16:24
okay I I I need it back I got it to the
00:16:27
wife like an hour before the
00:16:29
party she didn't know anything I didn't
00:16:33
get caught but I had to change some
00:16:35
things I had to be more careful I
00:16:37
started writing everything down where I
00:16:39
sold everything what pawn shop what item
00:16:42
what date all the data I wasn't going to
00:16:45
get caught this time so as a personal
00:16:48
shopper I was making a grand a week I
00:16:51
could make up to 10 grand a month as a
00:16:53
personal seller life was good man I was
00:16:56
making money I was treating myself I I
00:16:58
was treating the people close to me and
00:17:00
they didn't know a
00:17:02
thing so 2 years into the gig making
00:17:06
good money Family decides to move they
00:17:08
need an even bigger house I don't know
00:17:10
why stuff can get lost in the shuffle if
00:17:13
you know what I mean this was a big
00:17:15
chance to score they're not tracking any
00:17:17
of this stuff they got a lot of other
00:17:19
people working for them a lot of stuff
00:17:22
they want me to buy for it this is how
00:17:24
I'm going to do it I can be rich for
00:17:27
life such a big undertaking I got to
00:17:31
bring in another guy I had a buddy from
00:17:33
high school he's a little sketchy but I
00:17:35
knew he'd be willing to do this kind of
00:17:37
thing so we get to work we're writing
00:17:39
everything down we're in every pawn shop
00:17:42
from San Diego to Santa Barbara I I was
00:17:45
working so much I couldn't even spend
00:17:46
the money but I couldn't stop it was so
00:17:49
much money business was booming how
00:17:52
could I stop you going to say no to 10
00:17:54
grand I'm not all of my time was
00:17:57
consumed by this
00:17:59
so one day the wife calls me and says
00:18:01
hey we're in the middle of the move
00:18:02
we're missing some stuff do you know
00:18:05
anything about it I was like no uh
00:18:08
everything should be at the house she's
00:18:10
like we may be rich but we don't like
00:18:11
being stolen from we're going to check
00:18:13
the security footage and I panic oh crap
00:18:18
the security
00:18:20
footage trust me that secret Eye in the
00:18:23
Sky don't
00:18:25
blink find out if Chris can buy his way
00:18:28
at the trouble on statute of limitations
00:18:32
next way back in the day our man Chris
00:18:35
was stealing tons of stuff from the rich
00:18:38
family that employed him but while he
00:18:40
was making all that stuff disappear he
00:18:42
was also creating something in the
00:18:44
process a trail of evidence all thanks
00:18:48
to their security cam footage how's he
00:18:51
going to get out of this the same way
00:18:53
they should have been able to put him
00:18:55
away roll the tape she's like We're
00:18:58
going to going to check the security
00:18:59
footage we may be rich but we don't like
00:19:01
being stolen from I think this is it oh
00:19:04
crap security footage I might have
00:19:07
misstepped here and there are they going
00:19:10
to see me grabbing something from the
00:19:12
basement are they going to see me
00:19:14
Wheeling out a box or two it's been so
00:19:18
long I can't even remember now I'm like
00:19:20
I want to help you get to the bottom of
00:19:23
who's doing this who's looking at the
00:19:25
security footage uh do you want me to
00:19:27
talk to anyone else on staff and she's
00:19:29
like I'll take care of it and walked
00:19:32
away I got scared she didn't trust me I
00:19:36
know she thinks it's me so I got to
00:19:38
cover my tracks I got all this stuff in
00:19:40
my apartment should I put it back in the
00:19:42
house should I get rid of it I got to
00:19:44
talk to my buddy like hey man have they
00:19:46
talked to you at all like maybe we were
00:19:48
hanging out one day at the house and
00:19:50
they know who you are my mind's racing I
00:19:53
got to get everything out of my
00:19:54
apartment I have so much stuff in there
00:19:57
still if I get a knock on the door
00:19:58
they're going to see that I tried to
00:20:00
sell some stuff to pawn shops but I
00:20:03
couldn't do it fast enough I threw away
00:20:05
tens of thousands of dollars of
00:20:08
items right in the dumpster so I know
00:20:11
they're going to be checking the tapes
00:20:12
every day and now I'm just thinking back
00:20:14
to every time I walked through the
00:20:16
basement and there was a camera on me
00:20:18
every time I was walking up the driveway
00:20:20
they had this place under constant
00:20:23
surveillance I'm looking up how long
00:20:25
does footage stay in the system for if
00:20:28
it's a month I'm okay I don't think I've
00:20:30
taken anything from there in that amount
00:20:32
of time but if it's more I think they
00:20:34
got me red-handed one day the wife calls
00:20:38
me in and says hey Chris can I talk to
00:20:39
you for a second I think this is it she
00:20:42
sits me down and says Chris about the
00:20:45
security
00:20:47
footage I think I should be running for
00:20:49
the door and she says
00:20:51
Chris I want to put you in charge of it
00:20:54
I want you to get to the bottom of who's
00:20:56
doing this
00:20:58
I'm like
00:21:01
what are you crazy lady who do you think
00:21:04
has access to all this stuff on the
00:21:07
inside I'm popping champagne bottles I'm
00:21:10
partying I'm
00:21:12
likeo she doesn't suspect it's me she
00:21:15
trusts me but on the outside I'm like of
00:21:18
course I can totally do that for you
00:21:21
anything you need I'm going to help you
00:21:22
out am I in there red-handed am I taking
00:21:25
stuff out of the basement hour six
00:21:28
I found something they have hundreds of
00:21:30
hours of footage here they're not going
00:21:32
to notice if 6 minutes is missing so
00:21:35
delete delete I give her a report I'm
00:21:39
like I don't find anything here could be
00:21:41
these movers you have coming in all the
00:21:44
time but your footage is only stored for
00:21:46
90 days so chances are it's been deleted
00:21:49
already they let it go so I continue to
00:21:53
work for him for the next few months
00:21:55
make sure the move went smoothly I was
00:21:57
like hey
00:21:58
it's time that I do something else so on
00:22:01
my last day as a going away present the
00:22:04
husband didn't even know he liked me
00:22:07
came up and said Chris you did a good
00:22:09
job I want you to have this he gave me a
00:22:12
$5,000
00:22:14
Rolex little did he know I already have
00:22:17
two of
00:22:18
them Yo three must be the magic number
00:22:22
especially when it comes to those
00:22:24
Rolexes I guess he's the type of person
00:22:27

00:22:30
