Confession: I Started My Own Mafia |Statute of Limitations hosted by Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino

March 01, 2024 / 23:48

This episode of Statute of Limitations features stories about crime, including a New York City sample sale scam and high school vandalism. Guests Jeffrey and Ruby share their experiences with theft and revenge.

Jeffrey recounts his time in New York City during the early 2000s, where he became involved in a scheme to steal luxury goods from sample sales. He describes how he and his friends, dubbed the "gay Mafia," managed to siphon off expensive items and sell them online, ultimately accumulating around $500,000.

Ruby shares her story of being bullied in a strict Catholic school and how she sought revenge on her tormentor, Amy, by vandalizing her car. She details the planning and execution of the act, which included using paint, ketchup, and a hammer.

Both guests reflect on their past actions and the consequences they could have faced, but they also express a sense of freedom and satisfaction in their stories. The episode highlights the thrill of getting away with crime and the eventual relief that comes with the statute of limitations.

Mike The Situation Santino hosts the episode, guiding the conversation and connecting the guests' stories.

00:00:36
a lounge of
00:00:37
criminals these are stories of the
00:00:39
nonviolent lucky punks and Robin hoods
00:00:43
that Dodge the law I could have gone to
00:00:45
prison not jail prison because here's
00:00:48
the situation baby it's only a matter of
00:00:51
time before the statute of limitations

limitations what's up I'm Mike The
00:01:15
Situation Santino welcome to the show
00:01:18
where we find ordinary folks who
00:01:20
committed extraordinary crimes way back
00:01:22
when coming up on this episode of
00:01:24
statute of limitations we have some
00:01:26
intense folks we meet the head of the
00:01:29
game Mafia and a girl who got major
00:01:32
payback on a real life high school mean
00:01:35
girl I love that right now we've got the
00:01:38
story of a small town kid who moved to
00:01:40
the Big Apple and got caught up in a big
00:01:43
scam stealing luxury goods he could have
00:01:46
gone down for Grand leny instead he kept
00:01:50
his secret long enough to elude the law
00:01:53
he's like the dawn of the sample sale
00:01:56
Ken norra meet Jeffrey hello my name is
00:02:00
Jeffrey and in the early 2000s I
00:02:03
committed grand larsy for several years
00:02:05
I started a pretty much a game Mafia in
00:02:08
New York City where we stole product
00:02:10
from the sample
00:02:12
sale I moved to New York City without
00:02:15
ever having been to New York City in
00:02:17
2003 I just jumped right in I thought
00:02:20
hey I'm going to start doing comedy and
00:02:22
I'm going to work at a coffee house this
00:02:24
is my life in my 20s one thing I wasn't
00:02:27
prepared for when I moved to New York is
00:02:28
just how expensive was uh my roommate
00:02:31
and I converted a one-bedroom apartment
00:02:34
into a two-bedroom apartment I was
00:02:36
literally living in a living room to
00:02:40
save money you know you couldn't like go
00:02:42
out to eat we made ramen all the time it
00:02:45
was one of those classic artist
00:02:46
struggling artists stories about a year
00:02:49
in my best friend and my roommate and I
00:02:53
started working at a sample sale for
00:02:55
high-end designer home
00:02:58
decor
00:03:01
Sample Sales always sell product for a
00:03:03
discounted rate so this designer would
00:03:06
send products that cost thousands of
00:03:09
dollars retail and when you marked it
00:03:11
down sometimes it still cost thousands
00:03:13
of dollars that's how expensive this
00:03:15
stuff was there was Ring boxes and
00:03:18
necklace holders there was uh vases and
00:03:22
different types of figurines picture
00:03:24
frames just like really gudy stuff very
00:03:27
fancy it was very popular
00:03:30
with a very high brow sort of um Eastern
00:03:34
European Rich Housewives really enjoyed
00:03:36
these products when you're a comedian
00:03:39
and a barista in New York City every
00:03:42
side gig is a bonus I was thrilled to be
00:03:45
invited to something that seemed fun it
00:03:47
seemed nice and temporary it wasn't a
00:03:50
big commitment no one was really looking
00:03:52
over my shoulder there's a manager up at
00:03:54
the front my roommate and our boss lady
00:03:57
was up there she struck me as someone
00:03:59
who did not really keep track of what
00:04:01
she was spending I remember one time she
00:04:04
just surprised us all with some caviar
00:04:05
cuz she had like gotten a little a a
00:04:09
wild idea like oh let me get a caviar
00:04:11
snack for everybody we were like we've
00:04:13
never had caviar but thank you she'd
00:04:15
stood at the front and she'd check
00:04:17
everybody out but she never really was
00:04:19
looking in the back or worried about the
00:04:21
product probably because I came off as
00:04:24
very
00:04:27
trustworthy so after a few days of the
00:04:29
first sample sale I was cleaning up in
00:04:31
the back and I kind of realized hey I'm
00:04:35
in charge back here no one's around uh
00:04:39
what if I just took a few boxes of these
00:04:41
things and I slipped them in my backpack
00:04:43
I was nervous at first uh but as I
00:04:46
slowly walked out the building I
00:04:48
realized no one saw me and they were
00:04:50
mine like who was going to count
00:04:52
anything so once we got home my roommate
00:04:55
kind of side eyed me and was like don't
00:04:57
let me see what's in your bag and I was
00:05:00
like what nothing of course I was
00:05:02
nervous that when my roommate caught me
00:05:05
that I would get in trouble and he was
00:05:06
like mhm and he went into his room
00:05:09
ultimately he ended up doing that too
00:05:10
and I never saw him do it he was better
00:05:12
at it than I was once I realized that we
00:05:14
were kind of incahoots on this the first
00:05:16
time uh the whole world opened up and I
00:05:19
came back the very next day and then I
00:05:21
was ready to go Full
00:05:26
Throttle as we realized how easy it was
00:05:29
to take the product um we just kind of
00:05:33
siphoned it during the sale and then we
00:05:35
would sell it online after the sale for
00:05:38
lower prices than were even at the
00:05:40
sample sale the customers came and they
00:05:42
did the same thing they would buy
00:05:44
product for their homes but then they'd
00:05:45
buy a product to sell uh overseas and
00:05:48
stuff but if I could undercut them on
00:05:51
their posting then my item would get bid
00:05:54
on First and that would blow up into a
00:05:56
higher number all of it was free cash
00:05:58
for me so I didn't care if it went for
00:06:00
$500 $800
00:06:02
$1,500 all of it was pure profit for me
00:06:06
so after the first season sample sale uh
00:06:09
where I kind of got my nerves shaken out
00:06:11
right I got used to it and I thought
00:06:13
well gosh will they rehire me for the
00:06:15
second one and they did very easily my
00:06:19
roommate and I got rehired for the
00:06:20
second one no problem so I guess they
00:06:23
didn't notice anything was missing as
00:06:25
the popularity of this product grew so
00:06:27
did the sample sale so we had to hire
00:06:30
more and more people in order to work
00:06:32
the sale um and we strategically picked
00:06:35
out friends of ours to be a part of it
00:06:37
and thus the gay Mafia was born not
00:06:41
everyone was gay in it but the gay
00:06:42
people ran
00:06:46
it we really kind of graduated in the
00:06:50
way we ran our operation so on the next
00:06:54
sale we had strategically placed our
00:06:56
friends as like okay you're the door
00:06:58
person here you're the cash register
00:07:00
person there you're going to be the guy
00:07:02
who's watching the sales floor behind
00:07:04
the table over here and they were all
00:07:06
people who were also having their
00:07:08
backpacks under the table and just kind
00:07:10
of putting in a couple here and there
00:07:12
I'll say this for our friends they
00:07:14
definitely didn't take as much as they
00:07:16
probably could have uh but I certainly
00:07:19
did so in addition to the game Mafia my
00:07:22
friend also had us hire temporary
00:07:25
workers uh people we hired from online
00:07:28
just strangers that were working
00:07:31
sometimes we had to kind of dance around
00:07:32
them they were very nice people who
00:07:35
wanted to replenish the product and
00:07:37
bring it from the back to the sales
00:07:39
floor I kind of had to make sure please
00:07:41
don't move those open
00:07:43
boxes please just go do your work over
00:07:45
here that'd be great thank you so much I
00:07:48
had to make sure that they weren't
00:07:50
accidentally seeing us steal anything uh
00:07:53
so I always had to have my eyes on the
00:07:55
workers as
00:07:57
well I sometimes thought certainly
00:08:00
somewhere someone is counting how many
00:08:03
boxes are on a truck how many boxes get
00:08:06
sold and how many boxes come back the
00:08:08
cash I was accumulating wasn't just
00:08:10
covering rent um it was covering bills
00:08:14
it was covering my comedy classes I
00:08:16
really kind of felt like oh I know this
00:08:18
is wrong but it's so easy that it
00:08:21
actually feels good that I'm doing it
00:08:24
also it was stealing from rich people
00:08:26
let's be honest it was gy junk that
00:08:28
people really don't have any business
00:08:30
spending $11,200 on a thing I was like
00:08:33
these people are spending my monthly
00:08:35
rent on these fancy items they like
00:08:38
there's something wrong so there was a
00:08:39
part of me that also was kind of like
00:08:42
Stick it to the Man only I didn't know
00:08:44
who the man was it was just like a a
00:08:45
faceless designer I guess but like I
00:08:48
didn't care the rich lady boss did bring
00:08:52
in another lady to be a manager with her
00:08:55
we did not know this lady she also
00:08:57
didn't seem to warm or approachable so
00:09:01
we were so used to this other Bonkers
00:09:03
lady being our manager that the new
00:09:06
manager kind of scared us a little bit I
00:09:07
thought maybe I was going to have to
00:09:08
cook some books or like come up with
00:09:10
some numbers and some sort of paperwork
00:09:13
about what's coming off a truck and
00:09:14
where is it going none of my usual fun
00:09:17
charms worked on her uh she definitely
00:09:21
had like a wall around
00:09:24
her Jeffrey went from a small time crook
00:09:28
to straight up Kingpin in what he calls
00:09:31
the gay Mafia forget prison I'd be more
00:09:34
worried about getting whacked by those
00:09:36
dudes but Jeffrey is about to sink in
00:09:40
even deeper all these dirty details are
00:09:42
coming out on statute of limitations
00:09:47
next we're back with more statute of
00:09:49
limitations my man Jeffrey is smack dab
00:09:52
in the middle of a scheme to steal
00:09:54
high-end Goods just how much did he
00:09:56
steal oh man wait to you guys get a load
00:09:59
of this man check this out the rich lady
00:10:04
boss did bring in another lady to be a
00:10:07
manager with her we did not know this
00:10:09
lady she also didn't seem too warm or
00:10:13
approachable I was a little nervous that
00:10:15
none of my usual fun charms worked on
00:10:19
her I like I didn't care no one's
00:10:22
stopping me and my realization was no
00:10:25
one's going
00:10:27
to so most of the clientele at the
00:10:30
sample sale was very rich Eastern
00:10:32
European Housewives they would come into
00:10:35
the sale and they were working their own
00:10:38
angle right Sometimes some of these
00:10:40
ladies would put little trinkets inside
00:10:43
other bigger Trinkets and then put that
00:10:45
in a box and try to get like two for one
00:10:47
or three for one part of the gay mafia's
00:10:50
job was to make sure that the customers
00:10:53
weren't stealing uh we were also
00:10:55
stealing the irony of busting thieves is
00:10:59
not lost on me you know it takes one to
00:11:01
no one right and sometimes some of the
00:11:04
ladies they kind of looked us up and
00:11:05
down like wow you really have a really
00:11:07
good opportunity working here kind of
00:11:09
energy when the customers came to the
00:11:12
front my roommate was checking everybody
00:11:14
out and he would take everything out of
00:11:15
a box for quality control but it was
00:11:18
really just to make sure that they
00:11:19
weren't sticking more than one item into
00:11:21
a box which we busted at least two or
00:11:23
three every
00:11:25
season deep into the sample sale Mafia
00:11:28
extravaganza
00:11:29
we had one sale in particular that an
00:11:32
entire box truck backed into the loading
00:11:36
dock of the building that we were in we
00:11:39
actually had coordinated some of our
00:11:41
friends to be on the street and they
00:11:43
just took entire boxes off the truck and
00:11:46
walked themselves down the street if I
00:11:49
was to guess the Outreach of the entire
00:11:52
game Mafia in this scheme and how much
00:11:56
we all made together I mean
00:12:00
exponentially that could be like
00:12:03
$500,000 I really have no real way to
00:12:06
guess because there's probably things
00:12:07
that people stole that I don't even know
00:12:09
about but then something happened that I
00:12:11
didn't
00:12:14
expect after many seasons of working
00:12:17
this sample sale we had gotten it
00:12:19
streamlined so good like we had it down
00:12:22
pat but then the Big Wall Street Market
00:12:24
crash happened you know when the economy
00:12:26
goes in the tanker the first thing that
00:12:27
people cut out is luxu I is home decor
00:12:30
and our sample sale
00:12:32
went crash so they kind of pulled the
00:12:36
plug on the sample sale for a while cuz
00:12:37
they just weren't selling any product we
00:12:40
all just kind of graduated not only in
00:12:42
life but we graduated with money in
00:12:45
different directions we had kind of
00:12:46
become more adults so we kind of kissed
00:12:49
our our grand larsy days goodbye I know
00:12:52
there's that that saying the crime
00:12:54
doesn't pay right and uh in this case it
00:12:57
paid me very well
00:12:59
oh it it truly opened up a freedom in me
00:13:03
in a time where as an artist I was
00:13:05
struggling in a very expensive city I
00:13:08
really think the universe was like hey
00:13:09
you know what kid you need a break right
00:13:11
now and so here's an opportunity for you
00:13:14
to game the system work your hustle
00:13:16
throw your charm around and smoke screen
00:13:19
them all and and and enjoy the money
00:13:21
certainly now as an adult as a
00:13:23
45-year-old man who has like a real
00:13:26
career I would not get so heavily
00:13:29
involved in something like the gay Mafia
00:13:30
and I certainly wouldn't lead a gay
00:13:32
Mafia but at the time at 25 years old
00:13:35
this was the best job I had in my entire
00:13:38
life at the time and that's my story at
00:13:41
a boy Jeffrey way to not blow it he
00:13:44
could have got multiple years with the
00:13:46
New York Department of Corrections but
00:13:49
he stayed on the straight and narrow
00:13:51
long enough to keep his butt out of
00:13:53
prison a very very good situation now we
00:13:58
go to a story about a former Catholic
00:14:00
school girl with a checkered past thanks
00:14:03
to a crime that could have put her in a
00:14:05
California big house for 3 years luckily
00:14:10
the big guy and the statute of
00:14:12
limitations are on her side because
00:14:15
she's here to tell her tale and trust me
00:14:20
this one's a real gem guys meet
00:14:25
[Music]
00:14:27
Ruby
00:14:32
hi my name is Ruby and over 20 years ago
00:14:35
I committed vandalism and destruction of
00:14:39
property the statue of limitations is up
00:14:42
and I'm ready to tell my
00:14:47
story back in
00:14:49
1992 I went to very strict Catholic
00:14:52
private school and we were very
00:14:55
repressed you know like we were so
00:14:57
restricted from so so many things so a
00:15:00
lot of these girls would lash out at
00:15:02
each other cuz you got all these women
00:15:04
you know stuck in this high school and
00:15:06
we have a lot of energy right and so
00:15:09
there was a lot of chaos going on I mean
00:15:11
we went at each other's throats all the
00:15:15
time my group of friends we were kind of
00:15:18
like the you know Outcast we were kind
00:15:21
of nerdy we had this like book club and
00:15:25
we were kind of a little like goth so we
00:15:27
would get picked on a lot we always had
00:15:30
trouble with these like cheerleader
00:15:32
types and we were the Juniors they were
00:15:35
the seniors they had more authority over
00:15:38
us they would go around you know with
00:15:40
this like Pride that they were the best
00:15:43
they would leave stuff in our lockers
00:15:45
you know trash prank us all the time you
00:15:48
know throw glue in our drinks it was
00:15:51
frustrating I mean you know we had to
00:15:53
deal with this daily I had this problem
00:15:58
with this girl named Amy I mean she
00:16:00
would pick on every girl and she would
00:16:03
push us she would shove us into the
00:16:05
locker and she always had like two girls
00:16:08
with her all the time so that we
00:16:11
wouldn't you know fight back I was tired
00:16:13
of it you know I was tired of the
00:16:14
bullying I was tired it was a buildup
00:16:17
that was just like h i i i just couldn't
00:16:20
deal with it anymore you know she was
00:16:22
just a bully and no one could stand this
00:16:27
girl
00:16:29
so me and my friends we decided to get
00:16:31
even with Amy and we glued her desk and
00:16:35
we threw trash in her desk we loved
00:16:38
seeing her angry and
00:16:40
mad but the bullying almost got worse
00:16:44
and it would not
00:16:46
stop one day I pull in in my nice Cherry
00:16:50
classic car I come into the parking lot
00:16:53
and then Here Comes Amy behind me with
00:16:56
her brand new car as she starts yelling
00:16:59
you stupid get out of my parking space
00:17:02
you know what are you an idiot and I'm
00:17:05
just like what the hell's going on here
00:17:07
there was a lot of parking spaces and
00:17:09
she could have picked another parking
00:17:11
spot and she just decided to pick on me
00:17:14
she humiliated me and I'm like what are
00:17:18
you talking about this is your parking
00:17:20
spot there was other girls that were
00:17:22
watching what happened and I was just
00:17:24
like oh my God nobody came to my defense
00:17:28
I was there by myself I was scared
00:17:30
because she's got two other girls
00:17:31
they're going to beat me up what do I
00:17:36
do Jesus Mary and Joseph it's like my
00:17:40
mother always said you got to watch out
00:17:42
for those Catholic school girls trouble
00:17:45
for them is like a habit she's got her
00:17:48
tools now she's going to put the car in
00:17:51
Carnage on statute of limitations
00:17:57
next welcome back to statute of
00:17:59
limitations where our girl who is
00:18:01
bullied is seeing red instead of turning
00:18:05
the other cheek she's about to exact a
00:18:07
buttload of payback by vandalizing the
00:18:11
girl's car check this
00:18:14
out and she starts yelling you stupid
00:18:18
get out of my parking space there was
00:18:20
other girls that were watching what
00:18:22
happened and I was just like oh my God
00:18:25
nobody came to my defense
00:18:29
and so I'm just like okay fine you know
00:18:32
I I'll get out of the parking space and
00:18:34
I'll leave so I went back home and I
00:18:38
cried the whole day I didn't even go to
00:18:40
school because I was so upset so
00:18:43
humiliated and you know it's just a
00:18:46
builtup of anger it it was just a bad
00:18:49
feeling a very bad
00:18:51
feeling so then I was sitting there in
00:18:53
my room and I got to thinking you know
00:18:57
what she she really upset
00:19:00
me I'm starting to plot to get revenge
00:19:03
on
00:19:05
this so I came up with a plan to get
00:19:07
even with Amy I'm ready to go over to
00:19:11
the school and just vandalize and rip
00:19:13
her car apart so I got all this stuff
00:19:16
together paint Sharpies a hammer and a
00:19:20
knife so I started to think you know I
00:19:23
don't think it's a really good idea to
00:19:25
do this at school and so I came up with
00:19:28
another plan to do it at her house at
00:19:31
night
00:19:33
time so I'm walking down the sidewalk
00:19:36
Amy doesn't live that far away from me
00:19:38
and I got my bag of Destruction and I'm
00:19:41
walking I see her car and then someone
00:19:44
pulls up right to the right side of me
00:19:47
and I'm like oh there's someone watching
00:19:50
me so at this point I'm thinking you
00:19:53
know what I got to wait till tomorrow to
00:19:55
do
00:19:57
this
00:19:59
so I'm in my room thinking like oh my
00:20:02
gosh this these people saw me um should
00:20:04
I do it should I not but it's like you
00:20:07
know I'm a junior she's a senior if I
00:20:09
don't do it now this will haunt me for
00:20:12
the rest of my life if I don't get
00:20:14
even so it's the next night and I'm
00:20:16
walking down the sidewalk and I'm
00:20:18
looking to my left to my right there's
00:20:20
nobody there so I'm like this is my
00:20:25
move I'm you know have this and
00:20:28
adrenaline rush and I'm angry and I'm
00:20:30
just thinking like you know Amy has
00:20:33
humiliated me she bullies me and I'm
00:20:35
just like you know what it's time to get
00:20:37
even it's time to rip her car
00:20:40
apart I threw ketchup and mustard all
00:20:43
over the
00:20:44
car I threw paint everywhere and I got
00:20:48
my bat and hit the side of her mirror I
00:20:50
got my hammer and I broke the glass and
00:20:53
shattered her
00:20:55
window and just for good measure I got
00:20:57
my my knife and slash your
00:21:00
tires I felt like you know an adrenaline
00:21:04
rush and you know scared at the same
00:21:07
time that I was going to get caught that
00:21:08
someone was watching me that there was
00:21:10
cameras and I'm just like ah yes I total
00:21:14
her car you know I got even with Amy and
00:21:17
then the lights come on the dogs are
00:21:19
barking I'm like oh so I grabbed my back
00:21:22
threw it over my shoulder and I get the
00:21:24
hell out of
00:21:25
there so the next day I went to school
00:21:29
and everyone's talking about how Amy's
00:21:31
car got total and trashed and I'm just
00:21:34
like yes I got even I felt good about
00:21:38
this and Amy never found out you know
00:21:42
she never found out that it was me and
00:21:45
it was just it was an amazing feeling
00:21:47
and I'm just like yes
00:21:53
that so now I'm older and you know I had
00:21:57
a lot of things thinking to do and you
00:21:59
know I could have gotten caught I could
00:22:01
have gotten arrested and you know I
00:22:04
think about the consequences and now I'm
00:22:06
just like you know what I'll never do
00:22:09
that again when it was all said and done
00:22:12
she never got nailed and now thanks to
00:22:14
the statute of limitations she can rest
00:22:17
easy because apparently sins and
00:22:20
vandalism truly are forgiven as long as
00:22:23
you wait long
00:22:26
enough that's so wrap guys for this
00:22:29

00:22:48
the statute of limitations are
00:22:50
complicated and depend on many factors
00:22:53
if you need advice you should seek legal
00:22:55
counsel from a competent attorney in
