00:00:00
hey there and welcome to Runners only
00:00:02
with dom Harvey on this episode Victoria
00:00:04
Taylor this time around I've got a
00:00:06
toddler so every run that I've done has
00:00:09
been pushing him in the pram which has
00:00:11
been a lot more challenging my longest
00:00:13
runs have only been about 30k like
00:00:15
they've been pushing bricks in the pram
00:00:17
who is Victoria Taylor glad you asked
00:00:20
unless your balls deep into your running
00:00:22
you probably won't know the name but
00:00:24
it's a name that you should know
00:00:25
Victoria Taylor she ran the length of
00:00:27
New Zealand 10 years ago when she was 19
00:00:29
years old it took her 34 days which
00:00:31
worked out to be well over a full
00:00:33
marathon every day which is nuts now
00:00:36
she's doing it again but this time she
00:00:39
wants to take the overall record for the
00:00:41
fastest run by a man or woman a record
00:00:43
that has stood since the 1970s and it
00:00:46
stood for so long for a good reason it's
00:00:48
bloody tough
00:00:49
to do this she needs to run around three
00:00:52
full marathons every day for 18 days
00:00:56
the chance of failure is huge but I
00:00:58
reckon that's what makes this more
00:01:00
commendable that she's even giving it a
00:01:01
go I mean if it was easy everyone would
00:01:03
be doing it right I really hope you
00:01:05
enjoy this conversation and learn about
00:01:07
Victoria's wife for doing this and I
00:01:10
really hope you follow her journey as
00:01:12
she attempts to create history if she
00:01:13
does this it's going to be amazing all
00:01:15
right let's go Victoria Taylor
00:01:27
[Music]
00:01:34
[Music]
00:01:40
[Music]
00:01:46
Runners only hit with dom Harvey and
00:01:49
Victoria Taylor Victoria are you mad
00:01:52
woman what are you up to what are you
00:01:53
what are you doing with that drink pass
00:01:55
it over
00:01:56
[Music]
00:01:59
first of all you don't you're about to
00:02:01
run over 100ks a day for numerous days
00:02:03
on end I'm sure you can open a bottle
00:02:09
there you go thank you how are you good
00:02:11
thank you good it's nice to nice to
00:02:14
finally meet you we've known each other
00:02:15
for over 10 years now yeah two years
00:02:17
yeah because it might so decades since
00:02:19
the last round and that's how long I've
00:02:21
been talking to before yes we've been
00:02:23
friends on social media so you you are
00:02:26
um You probably need an introduction for
00:02:27
a lot of people there'll be a lot of
00:02:28
people in the running community that
00:02:30
listen to this that'll be familiar with
00:02:32
who you are but I think majority people
00:02:34
will have no idea but it's an amazing
00:02:36
story so you're Victoria Taylor from
00:02:38
Warner Cable you're how old I'm 29. how
00:02:42
old were you when you ran the length in
00:02:43
New Zealand I had just turned 19 a week
00:02:46
before it and this time around so it
00:02:49
marks exactly 10 years a decade since
00:02:51
the last run yeah so yeah when you were
00:02:53
19 you ran the length of the country in
00:02:54
34 days yeah yeah which breaks down to
00:02:58
what on average per day it was between
00:03:00
50 and 90 kilometers a day for 34 days
00:03:02
in a row right
00:03:04
[ __ ] that's nuts yeah I mean that's
00:03:07
Bonkers isn't it and that was um that
00:03:09
was a New Zealand record I guess that
00:03:11
was the female record yeah yeah
00:03:13
so the mail record so standing at 18
00:03:17
days nine hours right so you would
00:03:19
double that yes then there's a reason
00:03:21
we've got you on the podcast now because
00:03:23
um you're you're going back and you're
00:03:24
doing it again and you plan to do it way
00:03:26
quicker this time around
00:03:28
um but I just want to dwell on that for
00:03:30
a little bit like what did your parents
00:03:32
say well yeah I mean I was at that age
00:03:35
where I'd just been able to start going
00:03:38
out clubbing and drinking and stuff and
00:03:41
I mean it was I went out on my 18th
00:03:45
before Nationals and it was either
00:03:48
um chose my running or chose my social
00:03:50
life at that point in time in my life
00:03:52
because I knew I couldn't have both so I
00:03:55
made the decision that I'd been running
00:03:56
for years and that I'd stick with that
00:03:58
Focus yeah yeah right that's I don't
00:04:02
know if the mics can pick that up but um
00:04:03
your son breaks is here he's how old
00:04:06
three and on September the 12th on the
00:04:08
12th day of the round oh so it's only
00:04:09
he's terrible twos at the moment right
00:04:12
and boy isn't it you turned up about 20
00:04:13
minutes ago and had some lunch he just
00:04:16
about smashed my Lolly jar
00:04:18
it's kind of decorative I mean they're M
00:04:21
M's but you can't eat them but a kid
00:04:24
finds them straight away just about
00:04:26
smashed my bougie Lolli jar and I got on
00:04:28
video
00:04:29
was he just singing along to the Wiggles
00:04:31
no sure okay hopefully you'll be he's
00:04:33
probably running circles over your house
00:04:35
right so yeah so why did you decide to
00:04:38
go longer rather than faster it seems
00:04:40
like it's one of those ones like Ultras
00:04:41
that sort of I I don't know this is a
00:04:44
generalization but I feel like as you
00:04:46
get older as a runner and you lose some
00:04:47
of your speed that's when people look at
00:04:49
going longer so to get into that sort of
00:04:51
crazy [ __ ] when you're 18 is it's nuts
00:04:53
yeah and I guess I was into it from 14
00:04:56
because I was running half marathons
00:04:57
from the age of 14. um when I was
00:05:02
um even younger than that I'm I can't
00:05:05
remember the exact day I lost my
00:05:07
granddad from lung cancer and that was
00:05:10
my drive to want to do a big charity
00:05:12
around the end it needed to be more than
00:05:14
a marathon because I felt that people
00:05:16
run marathons on a daily basis while you
00:05:19
know like regularly so well yeah in
00:05:21
terms of getting attention I mean there
00:05:23
are people like you look at the London
00:05:24
Marathon for example I keep some people
00:05:26
do that for and raise money for a
00:05:28
charity and that's fine I don't want to
00:05:29
take anything away from those people
00:05:30
yeah to get a massive amount of
00:05:32
attention you do need to be something
00:05:34
out there and that's why I chose what
00:05:37
are you up to breaks
00:05:39
you want to take Mom away
00:05:42
um yeah so you run the length of the
00:05:43
country in 34 days
00:05:45
um averaging 50 something K's a day or
00:05:47
whatever and you do that for
00:05:49
um I did that for child Cancer
00:05:50
Foundation yeah right right yeah back in
00:05:54
2012 and I raised seven to over seven
00:05:56
ten and a half thousand for the child
00:05:58
Cancer Foundation what's up Rex
00:06:01
hey
00:06:02
what does he want
00:06:04
s to take me to the kitchen oh no it's
00:06:06
okay man kids are full-on aren't they I
00:06:08
I
00:06:09
um I desperately wanted a family and I
00:06:10
ended up having this tumor and it left
00:06:13
me with fertility issues and I had round
00:06:14
rounds and rounds of IVF and can't have
00:06:16
kids it's still like Mrs Smith with me
00:06:18
but to this day but then when I have
00:06:19
someone on the terrible twos in the
00:06:21
house running around running a muck I'm
00:06:23
sort of thinking oh it's not so bad not
00:06:26
having kids
00:06:33
so when you when you did the when you
00:06:36
ran the length of the country for um
00:06:37
child cancer uh 10 years ago mentally
00:06:40
what was the toughest bat was there any
00:06:41
point where you thought you might give
00:06:42
up yeah but that was because of some
00:06:45
certain people I guess on the run at
00:06:47
South right down like those support crew
00:06:52
people that I was telling you about all
00:06:53
right yeah before we were off yeah okay
00:06:55
right right but other than that let down
00:06:57
by your own support group yeah well
00:06:59
that's the opposite of us yeah the
00:07:01
person that actually was the most
00:07:02
negative wasn't meant to be on my
00:07:04
support because they kind of pushed
00:07:05
their way in so trying to be supportive
00:07:07
that wasn't what you did as a 19 year
00:07:10
old is is absolutely mind-blowing like
00:07:12
it really is so it's you ran more than a
00:07:15
marathon a day four marathons and 34
00:07:18
days when I was only 19. yeah it's
00:07:20
[ __ ] crazy yeah regardless of age I
00:07:23
mean the age does make it you're still
00:07:25
in your last year as a teenager which
00:07:26
makes it amazing but it's amazing for
00:07:28
any age like it's something that not
00:07:30
many people could physically or mentally
00:07:32
bring themselves to do I think you never
00:07:34
felt like quitting no like I hadn't
00:07:37
never give out attitude and I was
00:07:40
willing to push myself to complete it
00:07:42
where did that come from
00:07:44
um I had a hard upbringing so I guess
00:07:47
that like Made Me Stronger I guess I
00:07:50
like looked out for myself a lot growing
00:07:52
up
00:07:53
went for travels growing up like
00:07:56
I guess family issues so I'd say too
00:07:58
much about it on here about I mean yeah
00:08:01
like grew up with two unstable parents
00:08:03
to an extent and had to kind of fend for
00:08:06
myself to an extent so that's weird yeah
00:08:10
it gave me resilience and like I've been
00:08:13
hurt myself so I know like I've grown to
00:08:16
not want to hurt other people
00:08:17
intentionally because of it
00:08:19
that's such a good attitude
00:08:23
Direction and that's the thing like I
00:08:25
never turned to like drugs or any
00:08:27
alcohol or use it as an excuse yeah
00:08:30
exactly like it's currently in the
00:08:32
opposite direction I mean I've been
00:08:34
running since I was so young and running
00:08:36
got me for a lot and then do you think
00:08:39
you were running away running away from
00:08:40
something like psychologically speaking
00:08:42
Yeah in some ways but I guess like
00:08:45
running really helps deal with your
00:08:46
stress and like that so like if it
00:08:49
wasn't for running I would have been
00:08:50
like in a lot of like I could have been
00:08:51
in a lot worse a place by now like so
00:08:54
running got me through so much and
00:08:56
that's why I wanted to be able to give
00:08:57
back for it as well because it helped me
00:08:59
a lot like mentally I guess with all my
00:09:02
like stuff that I was going through
00:09:04
how how did it feel like when you
00:09:07
finished was it the most amazing
00:09:09
euphoric feeling ever
00:09:12
exactly like
00:09:16
like Shamrock came and saw me and said
00:09:18
hello to Mev
00:09:20
um
00:09:23
about the Rand finish itself was
00:09:27
a pretty amazing feeling after you've
00:09:29
like not like I've persevered and I
00:09:32
pushed for and I've got through that you
00:09:34
know what were the what were the darkest
00:09:36
darkest days or darkest phases in those
00:09:38
34 days yeah I don't know was that there
00:09:41
a period where there's like a massive
00:09:42
headwind or it's just pissing down with
00:09:44
rain or it's hilly or wow there was a
00:09:46
period I shouldn't say parent literally
00:09:49
and I had to deal with cramps
00:09:56
yeah exactly so I mean like literally
00:09:59
that was probably my hardest point to
00:10:01
deal with because I was dealing with
00:10:02
like stomach cramps having to like put
00:10:04
whole water bottles on my stomach like
00:10:06
on the first day of cramping so like
00:10:08
there was literally like that side of it
00:10:10
which yeah that other than that I mean
00:10:13
the Run itself like I think I'd listened
00:10:16
to music quite a lot of the time when I
00:10:18
was running as well but I had it was
00:10:20
back in the days where because it was 10
00:10:21
years ago where they didn't have the oh
00:10:24
Bluetooth
00:10:25
so my headphones I've got photos of me
00:10:27
and I've got like a cables
00:10:30
so I mean that kept me going and I guess
00:10:33
I had a lot of people come out and join
00:10:35
me for runs and that and yeah
00:10:38
okay so that was 10 years ago now and
00:10:42
this is the reason we've got you on the
00:10:43
podcast today
00:10:45
um you are going back to do it again
00:10:48
um this time you you uh hoping to do it
00:10:51
on half the time which will be not just
00:10:54
the female record but the overall record
00:10:55
male female however and it was who said
00:10:58
it by the way it was set yeah yeah when
00:11:01
in the 70s 1975 to be exact
00:11:06
so what's that 40 seven years ago 47
00:11:09
years ago this record's been standing
00:11:15
it's impossible you can't do it it won't
00:11:18
be done but then there's a part of me
00:11:20
that thinks you you've done this before
00:11:22
yeah it took you twice as long but you
00:11:24
know what to expect yes so I I anyone
00:11:29
would be an idiot to write you off
00:11:30
because you you've been there you know
00:11:32
what to expect yeah so if anyone can do
00:11:36
it I reckon you're a chance
00:11:38
we did do it in that time last time but
00:11:41
I feel like there's hope with a good
00:11:42
support crew and good gear and me being
00:11:45
in the right space for it are you uh as
00:11:49
as part are you looking back from the um
00:11:50
the record 10 years ago with sort of
00:11:52
Rose tinted glasses like I reckon like
00:11:54
maybe it's worse than what you remember
00:11:55
when you start running again you'll be
00:11:57
like oh that's right it was a pretty
00:11:58
[ __ ] time yeah I don't know oh brexit's
00:12:02
trying to get on the boat he's not free
00:12:03
City
00:12:09
right right
00:12:12
[Laughter]
00:12:17
really good yeah good for night feeds
00:12:19
because like otherwise this would be
00:12:21
even harder so that's the thing I've had
00:12:23
to do all the training while I was still
00:12:25
nursing home at night getting my sleeps
00:12:27
interrupted yeah now how how do you
00:12:29
train for something like this
00:12:31
um I've been well last time I could do a
00:12:34
lot
00:12:35
easier right well like you know when you
00:12:37
were 18 19 yeah yeah well not easy about
00:12:39
I had the chance to just run out the
00:12:42
door on my own of course experience this
00:12:43
time around I've got a toddler so every
00:12:46
run that I've done has been pushing him
00:12:48
in the prime which has been a lot more
00:12:50
challenging unbelievable but what's the
00:12:52
what sort of miles and stuff like how do
00:12:54
you train for a challenge like this
00:12:56
um
00:12:57
well my longest randoms have only been
00:12:59
about 30k like they've been pushing
00:13:01
bricks in the pram right and we're not
00:13:03
good enough that doesn't is that a long
00:13:05
enough run yep I feel that the runs that
00:13:08
I've been doing help I mean I had
00:13:10
planned to like whatever you call it
00:13:12
like a brexitian where I did about two
00:13:16
three twenty to 30k runs a day like for
00:13:18
a couple of weeks but I fell set for
00:13:20
that flow that was going on wait two to
00:13:23
three 30k runs a day 20K runs okay so
00:13:27
you're the pram so you wake up in the
00:13:28
morning
00:13:29
what time
00:13:31
um when I did the training yeah I'd plan
00:13:34
to get up and do it around between four
00:13:36
and six am then do another one the day
00:13:38
and do another one afternoon
00:13:40
oh my God that sounds awful I thought
00:13:43
I'd plan to do that but then I felt sick
00:13:45
with that cold that was going around and
00:13:47
it knocked me down for two to three
00:13:48
weeks so it meant that I missed my
00:13:51
training that I probably should have
00:13:52
done which was really unfortunate but at
00:13:55
the same time I kind of like tried to
00:13:57
stay positive and in that time frame I
00:14:00
actually used that to get the rest of
00:14:02
the sponsors on board and get everything
00:14:05
planned so that the Run was completely
00:14:08
sorted because without that the Run
00:14:10
wouldn't have been going ahead if I
00:14:11
hadn't got all the sponsorship in time
00:14:13
as well so you've been hustling the
00:14:15
sponsors yourself which is it's never
00:14:17
easy a it's a real grind out there and
00:14:19
you've done this all yourself you've
00:14:20
done the training
00:14:22
um and you're raising like a brexit has
00:14:25
terrible toes
00:14:26
wow why don't you wait a little bit
00:14:29
longer
00:14:30
like wait till he was at school or
00:14:31
something give yourself a break no no
00:14:37
he was inside I mean
00:14:39
studying as well well brex to be a
00:14:41
personal trainer so I'm planning on
00:14:43
keeping my career off hopefully after
00:14:45
this like coaching more people and
00:14:47
helping people in that way um it's hard
00:14:49
for me to get my head around the sort of
00:14:51
training that's required but you're
00:14:52
making us a bless you you're making it
00:14:53
sound almost like relatively easy in
00:14:56
terms of the like the length of the runs
00:14:58
you've done
00:14:59
if I was sitting here with you and you'd
00:15:01
never done anything like this before I'd
00:15:03
be like this woman's mad like the
00:15:05
longest run she's done is 30ks albeit
00:15:07
with a heavy pram that's that's not
00:15:09
enough but you know what to expect so
00:15:11
you know that you've done enough yeah
00:15:13
and as I say I would have liked to have
00:15:15
done more kilometers but I felt sick ass
00:15:17
with a cold so that suit me that which
00:15:19
was unfortunate and um Rex was sick at
00:15:22
that point as well so it said Us by a
00:15:25
bit but um I feel like I do still feel
00:15:28
confident with my training that I've
00:15:30
done
00:15:31
I mean obviously it's a lot less than
00:15:33
I'd plan to have done but I've done this
00:15:36
before I've been running for over 20
00:15:38
something years I'm not underestimating
00:15:40
it it's going to be hard but you also
00:15:42
build up as you go like when you think
00:15:43
about it I'm running
00:15:45
Free Runs a day but obviously that's
00:15:47
going to train me up in the way in a way
00:15:49
as I go like I'm not relying on that
00:15:51
fully but I'm just saying that I'm aware
00:15:53
that if I'm running Those runs each day
00:15:57
that's going to build me up as well like
00:16:00
as well as my base that I've already got
00:16:02
right so your body will adapt and adjust
00:16:04
and actually get stronger you reckon as
00:16:06
you go on yeah yeah yeah for sure I like
00:16:08
that's and that's the thing and I mean
00:16:09
it's muscle memory I've got the I've got
00:16:12
the training behind me even if it's not
00:16:14
like even if the last few months hasn't
00:16:17
been as much as I'd planned but I mean
00:16:19
things happen for a reason and like at
00:16:21
least I've avoided injury I'm recovered
00:16:24
like you know like I'm gonna be going
00:16:25
into this run fresher than I may have
00:16:27
been if I'd been doing those runs with a
00:16:30
friend sure that many of them so
00:16:33
I mean it's an audacious thing you're
00:16:34
attempting it's [ __ ] massive there's
00:16:36
there's a reason that this record was
00:16:38
set in 1975 and has been attempted on
00:16:41
got hundreds of occasions since then and
00:16:43
people have failed and it's because it's
00:16:45
a hard one
00:16:46
um but I think you know we need to
00:16:47
afford people for giving these things a
00:16:49
go because if it was easy every [ __ ]
00:16:51
would be doing it exactly so the fact
00:16:53
that you were doing it and there is a
00:16:54
like I would say a higher risk of
00:16:56
failure I think that makes it I I
00:16:58
applaud you for that yeah I think that's
00:17:01
amazing
00:17:02
a lot like a lot of people wouldn't do
00:17:03
it because they're scared of it because
00:17:04
there are those haters out there
00:17:06
there'll be those people that are like
00:17:08
sitting there watching watching your
00:17:09
progress like hoping that there would
00:17:11
come a point where you where you fall
00:17:12
off or you fall behind or you pull out
00:17:14
and they can say oh I knew it she's full
00:17:16
of [ __ ] or whatever yeah what are they
00:17:18
doing sitting at home in front of the
00:17:19
phone screen yeah you're out there
00:17:21
actually giving it a go yeah it's going
00:17:23
to be super challenging and yeah
00:17:25
estimating it and I'm not saying that
00:17:27
I'm gonna fail and I'm definitely not
00:17:28
saying that it's an attempt I'm saying
00:17:30
that I'm going out there and I'm gonna
00:17:31
give her everything that I can in memory
00:17:33
of those loved ones lost
00:17:35
because like I've lost a few people that
00:17:37
way as well so I mean suicide you're
00:17:40
talking about yeah yeah and I think
00:17:42
because I've got that strong connection
00:17:43
of losing someone that was the kindest
00:17:45
person that I ever knew that way and
00:17:48
it's really hurt me like emotionally to
00:17:50
lose someone this way that was close to
00:17:52
me and it just I feel that awareness
00:17:55
needs to be erased for it and stuff yeah
00:17:59
because there were like a few factors
00:18:00
you know like and awareness needs to be
00:18:03
raised in the trades as well like the
00:18:05
builders and stuff like the mental
00:18:07
health right yeah let's let's get into
00:18:08
that now so um so yeah last time around
00:18:11
uh 10 years ago when you were 19 you
00:18:13
were running for um child care so this
00:18:15
time you're running for mental health
00:18:16
and yeah so mental health Foundation of
00:18:18
New Zealand yeah yeah okay that's cool
00:18:20
so you met umu when you were 19. yes
00:18:24
just after the running for New Zealand
00:18:26
last sign right how did you guys make
00:18:29
um so I was at a youth group leaders get
00:18:32
together in Tower at Tower of Baptist
00:18:34
and it was a night we were just like
00:18:36
playing volleyball and stuff and like I
00:18:38
met him like he stood out from everyone
00:18:41
I don't know he had a nice smile and he
00:18:44
was like wearing an
00:18:47
internet yeah
00:18:52
anything it wasn't intentional but we I
00:18:56
met him there because like everyone was
00:18:58
talking and everyone like meets each
00:19:00
other and you get to know people and
00:19:01
stuff and he just stood out to me from
00:19:04
everyone and
00:19:06
um we ended up hanging out a few times
00:19:08
when I like credit but and um went out
00:19:11
like to play kokitiki beach one day and
00:19:14
did this like because there's a regional
00:19:16
park out there like we walked along the
00:19:18
beach we went out there and saw the
00:19:20
sunset it was really nice
00:19:21
um but the hardest part was about that
00:19:24
and I guess I want to bring it up as
00:19:26
well as what am I actually lost his
00:19:28
father from suicide as well which was
00:19:31
when he was seven
00:19:33
so and like we were having like a close
00:19:36
moment then so how old was he at the
00:19:38
time same as some ages you like 19. yeah
00:19:40
because Hayes July he was July okay and
00:19:43
I'm August so like same
00:19:45
right
00:19:46
um so he was only 19 at the time when he
00:19:48
told me this and five years later he was
00:19:51
gone but he kind of pushed me away and I
00:19:54
couldn't understand it because we got
00:19:55
along really really well and I couldn't
00:19:57
understand it at the time and now
00:19:59
looking back at it I feel that there was
00:20:01
some like bigger issues with that a lot
00:20:04
of people do that when they um yeah when
00:20:06
they're suffering depression they sort
00:20:07
of isolate yes so it was pretty sad and
00:20:10
then so we like parted our ways I was
00:20:12
gonna give up my running because I was
00:20:13
running 24 7 so I didn't really have
00:20:15
time for a boyfriend or anything but I
00:20:18
really liked him and like cared about
00:20:20
him so I was like I'll sort of place it
00:20:23
back on my running so that I can spend
00:20:24
some time with you sort of thing but he
00:20:26
was so nice that he knew that running
00:20:29
was my life 24 7 and he wasn't going to
00:20:31
take it like he wasn't going to take
00:20:33
that away from me so we parted but we
00:20:35
stayed friends in the end and when I got
00:20:37
this tattoo and it said that it was a
00:20:39
curl tattoo what does that say it's on
00:20:41
your right wrist what does it say so it
00:20:42
says n-e-g-u with a hat what which is
00:20:45
short for nearly ever get that and it's
00:20:48
um one of the acronyms that juicy Joy's
00:20:50
Rose made up when she was going through
00:20:53
cancer herself she was 14 years old she
00:20:55
passed away but before that she was
00:20:57
going around making Georgia's for other
00:20:59
little kids that were had cancer to make
00:21:01
them happy when they were going through
00:21:03
the treatment and stuff so it was kind
00:21:06
of like uh I wanted to get a tattoo that
00:21:09
had a real purpose behind it and it
00:21:12
supports the run that I did just I
00:21:14
figured that it would also be a good
00:21:16
thing if I'm doing a race and things get
00:21:18
tough to look at and believe it or not
00:21:20
this is like one of the since getting it
00:21:23
it's pretty much one of the like first
00:21:25
races or anything that I've done so and
00:21:28
I feel like there's going to be
00:21:29
challenging times where I'm gonna need
00:21:31
this oh God that is a magnet on my
00:21:33
fridge so it's a quote from Winston
00:21:35
Churchill yeah yeah how about that it's
00:21:38
a good one yeah yeah I definitely didn't
00:21:41
see it coming like I found out over
00:21:43
Facebook and I was in a lot of shock oh
00:21:46
that's how you found out yeah I found
00:21:48
out over Facebook because
00:21:50
um I like obviously post was shared that
00:21:55
had
00:21:55
passed away and I was like so that was
00:21:58
how I found out
00:21:59
um yeah it was in a lot of shock
00:22:01
um when just before I bike to our New
00:22:04
Zealand the oh yeah this was we by the
00:22:06
way we haven't even bought this up so
00:22:08
you biked around New Zealand that's
00:22:10
something you've done after the run at
00:22:12
19. yeah it's about five years ago 2017
00:22:15
it was just
00:22:17
um yeah how many days like you didn't do
00:22:19
Sunni five days yeah because a lot of
00:22:21
people are probably thinking wait you're
00:22:22
gonna you're gonna run the length of the
00:22:24
country in 18 days but you biked on the
00:22:26
75 no you didn't do like State of
00:22:27
highway one you no bike the outline
00:22:29
nearly three times like so I did like
00:22:33
six thousand plus K right so you saw
00:22:36
parts of the country that no one would
00:22:37
ever see yeah yeah yeah and just before
00:22:39
I did the bike the guy that I was seeing
00:22:42
one of his friends took his life and it
00:22:44
was over a girl and I was as support
00:22:46
went to the funeral and stuff and I went
00:22:49
from saying
00:22:51
I'll mention his name because I won't
00:22:53
mention his last name I went from saying
00:22:54
Jamie be this happiest person to
00:22:57
struggling like while not struggling but
00:23:00
you know like and I understand that
00:23:02
feeling now because I didn't understand
00:23:04
it on a level until it happened to me
00:23:07
losing watermo that when you lose
00:23:09
someone this way it's different to
00:23:11
losing someone from them passing away in
00:23:13
another way of course I'm not sure who
00:23:16
um who said this quote in the first
00:23:18
place but it's quote I really like it
00:23:19
talks about how when someone takes their
00:23:22
own life their their pain stops but it
00:23:24
doesn't end it just gets transferred to
00:23:26
everyone around them
00:23:28
I love that it's so true isn't it yes
00:23:31
so much yeah like I Now understand the
00:23:35
pain that people feel when they lose
00:23:36
someone this way
00:23:38
um you know like yes it's something like
00:23:40
108 108 people on average a few someone
00:23:43
that takes her own life that's how many
00:23:44
other lives are impacted by their loss
00:23:47
that's what they say on average and I
00:23:49
think that's probably true yeah and I
00:23:51
think it's so hard as well because I
00:23:53
mean he lost his dad that way and then
00:23:55
now he's gone down but I think yeah what
00:23:58
about what about his mum yeah I'm
00:24:00
friends with the mom like I talk to her
00:24:03
on a regular basis how do you cope with
00:24:05
that like losing your husband that way
00:24:06
and then losing your son yeah that's
00:24:09
yeah it's ruthless like ruthless isn't
00:24:12
the right word to say it but I really do
00:24:14
feel for her I really do you're right
00:24:16
mate
00:24:17
Shoulders Knees and Toes we'd run over
00:24:19
serious conversation here we by the way
00:24:22
uh we just had a pause before you to
00:24:23
change a nappy I thought there was a
00:24:25
funny smell and you and I are sitting on
00:24:27
chairs we're separated by a coffee table
00:24:29
here he was under there taking a dump we
00:24:32
were talking about you were running the
00:24:33
length of the country and he was having
00:24:34
a poo under my coffee table
00:24:39
unbelievable you're good at blocking the
00:24:41
noise out I'm finding it hard to
00:24:43
concentrate yeah you used to it was so
00:24:45
was was Whittemore who like was he a
00:24:47
good communicator like was he good at
00:24:49
talking to his friends like I feel like
00:24:50
that's something a lot of guys like
00:24:51
they're just not good at talking about
00:24:53
the stuff and it's I'm I'm thinking from
00:24:55
personal experiences from you know
00:24:56
friends that I've lost and the song Frey
00:24:59
to initiate that conversation and have
00:25:01
serious conversations with people to say
00:25:02
[ __ ] man I'm not doing well that the
00:25:04
easier option is to take their own life
00:25:06
yeah well I think there are a few
00:25:08
factors and I'll say this and I mean it
00:25:10
may not be the best thing to say
00:25:12
um he actually took his life at work
00:25:14
yeah there's got to be I mean mental
00:25:17
health is such a big thing and it's so
00:25:18
hard to understand isn't it but we we do
00:25:21
need more conversations about um I
00:25:23
suppose like teaching like resilience
00:25:25
and toughness because throughout life
00:25:27
we're all going to face some [ __ ] storms
00:25:29
and it's um we do we just need to be
00:25:31
tougher than that and know that these um
00:25:33
tough situations will pass yeah this run
00:25:36
itself is going to probably make it make
00:25:39
me really aware that he's really gone
00:25:41
but you know like I still feel his
00:25:42
presence and stuff so I don't yeah I
00:25:45
don't know it's so tough it's a tough
00:25:47
thing for sure it's nice and with um
00:25:50
you know running with um someone like
00:25:52
that in your mind uh there are going to
00:25:54
be you know dark times during this run
00:25:56
without a doubt probably starting on day
00:25:58
one yeah
00:26:00
and it won't be just like like fleeting
00:26:03
dark periods there's gonna be like days
00:26:05
perhaps that are just dark um but if
00:26:07
you're running for something like that
00:26:08
then um I think it's not going to make
00:26:11
it easier but it'll it'll help keep it
00:26:13
keep you in the game the pain that I go
00:26:15
for has got to be temporary the pain of
00:26:17
losing someone this way the pain is
00:26:19
forever and especially like if you were
00:26:21
close with them it's really that's a
00:26:23
similar thing with with suicide very
00:26:25
very permanent solution to a temporary
00:26:27
problem like whatever you had going on
00:26:28
it's always going to pass you just need
00:26:30
to hang in there hang in the game Rex
00:26:32
careful it's been banging around my
00:26:35
decorative Apple
00:26:42
[Laughter]
00:26:47
Okay so Thursday September 1 2022 4 a.m
00:26:52
that's that's when you start so you're
00:26:54
at caprianga at the top of the North
00:26:56
Island
00:26:57
so we're gonna stay in Pocono tonight so
00:26:59
we'll get up at 3am and travel to the
00:27:01
cape okay yeah
00:27:03
it's accommodation yeah who's who's we
00:27:06
who's who's in your support group so and
00:27:09
the support
00:27:11
what's it yeah go ahead go ahead
00:27:17
tonight oh yeah yeah so um yeah so
00:27:20
you're starting 4am
00:27:23
um Thursday morning September 1 2022.
00:27:25
I'm just saying that because I'm not
00:27:26
sure when people will listen to this so
00:27:28
pitch dark caperanger at the top of the
00:27:30
the tip of the north island of New
00:27:32
Zealand so it's you who's in your
00:27:35
campervan
00:27:36
um so we will have
00:27:38
um Jessie and her little daughter
00:27:40
Charlotte as well as Brax so there's
00:27:42
going to be totalizers yeah she's a
00:27:45
friend of mine from Auckland so yeah
00:27:47
she's coming the whole way and it's been
00:27:50
a mum on board that's going to help and
00:27:51
the kids having each other to bounce off
00:27:53
rather than it's just being brex is
00:27:55
going to really help a lot as well
00:27:58
um we will have also
00:28:01
free other support crew members which
00:28:03
are coming up oh no actually four so
00:28:07
Andrea who used to be my neighbor in
00:28:09
stanmore Bay she's going to come up and
00:28:10
support us with her you from Kate Ranger
00:28:13
down to taupo and we will also have
00:28:16
Shannon and her partner Alan from
00:28:19
whangarei who are going to come up and
00:28:21
support us and they're going to bring
00:28:22
their car up as well so in their debt
00:28:25
and her dad's gonna come up and help
00:28:27
Drive the motor home to Hamilton
00:28:29
and yeah and then we've got more Crow
00:28:32
joining on Auckland and Hamilton
00:28:35
yeah it's going to be okay so so
00:28:38
Thursday morning you you wake up what
00:28:39
time and what do you eat
00:28:41
um I'm going to wake up have to wake up
00:28:44
before 3am because we have to be on the
00:28:46
road by then
00:28:48
Jesus it's a daunting thought hey
00:28:50
because it's like once once you start
00:28:52
you you just know you're going to be in
00:28:55
a state of sleep deprivation and pain
00:28:57
until until it ends yeah pretty much
00:29:00
until it is it's like that yeah that's a
00:29:03
terrifying thought I feel like vomiting
00:29:05
just thinking about it
00:29:07
yes so it is pretty challenging I mean I
00:29:11
don't think I think I'm going to be able
00:29:12
to eat a solid breakfast at four in the
00:29:14
morning so I have a feeling I might just
00:29:16
eat like a bar or something and then as
00:29:19
I feel like the the breakfast that
00:29:21
morning won't matter like you're always
00:29:22
going to be in a calorie deficit aren't
00:29:23
you yeah as soon as you start yeah when
00:29:25
they first get up I'll probably just
00:29:27
have a banana or a bar or something
00:29:29
because it's gonna be so early in the
00:29:31
morning and chances are probably the
00:29:33
half sleep as well
00:29:35
and then I will during my first days
00:29:38
around which is an average of between 35
00:29:41
and 40K
00:29:42
uh yeah I feel like that's um that's an
00:29:45
interesting way to go about it so you
00:29:46
break it down into three like manageable
00:29:48
chunks and I say I say manageable and
00:29:50
e-commerce because it's they're all
00:29:52
bloody long runs yeah so yeah so you'd
00:29:54
get that first run done which is like
00:29:56
what let's say 30k 30 40K and then I
00:29:58
still like but I mean I can have I can
00:30:00
do it on like 10K Lots or whatever just
00:30:03
get that first lot done then I'll have a
00:30:05
solid break for like an hour or so so
00:30:07
that we can upload everything to like
00:30:09
the hard drive and stuff because
00:30:11
everything's got to be tracked and stuff
00:30:13
um oh forgiveness yeah so that's pretty
00:30:15
fun and then there's a lot are you gonna
00:30:18
just focus on the run or do you have to
00:30:20
like worry about a lot of the logistics
00:30:22
behind the scenes wow the good thing is
00:30:24
I don't need to worry too much about
00:30:25
brex while I'm out running now because
00:30:27
I've got a good support crew behind me
00:30:29
that can help with him so that takes a
00:30:31
huge weight off my shoulders because
00:30:32
even if I end up having to do some of
00:30:34
the like log booking or stuff myself at
00:30:37
least I know I can just focus on myself
00:30:39
so I really appreciate having my friend
00:30:41
that's a mum because that's just gonna
00:30:44
mean that I can just try and focus on
00:30:46
the run as much as I can ideally in
00:30:49
those in those breaks in between runs
00:30:50
you want to be lying down right yeah
00:30:52
yeah I feel like you're not necessarily
00:30:55
going to be doing that
00:30:56
um well I mean I should get the chance
00:30:58
to because we've got like at least we'll
00:31:00
have at least three to four adults um on
00:31:03
the support crew at all times so there
00:31:06
is a chance that I will be able to just
00:31:08
relax like you know and age and race go
00:31:12
um so I feel like if you are to do this
00:31:13
you you need to be as selfish as what
00:31:15
you're able to be yeah I'm not I try not
00:31:18
to be selfish but I guess since I have
00:31:21
well in the sense I have to be in in the
00:31:23
in the sense that I have to listen to my
00:31:26
body and that's what I had to do last
00:31:27
time even though like crazy people
00:31:29
turned up on the support group I still
00:31:30
listen to me my body's gonna within
00:31:33
reason like if my body tells me oh it's
00:31:36
getting tough I'm not gonna give up but
00:31:37
what I'm meaning is I have to listen to
00:31:40
my body when my body needs to drink when
00:31:42
I need to have a break like say if I get
00:31:44
too tired like it happened last time and
00:31:46
if I get well I will get tired but if I
00:31:50
need a little PowerNet just to be able
00:31:51
to get back on the road and go again
00:31:53
safely I'll do it this well then raise
00:31:56
them like I'm not gonna just do that all
00:31:57
the time I'm just saying I need to
00:31:59
listen to me if the support crew can't
00:32:01
understand it I it's just what it looks
00:32:05
like at the end of the day you actually
00:32:07
have to listen to your body and that's
00:32:08
what got me through last time that's why
00:32:09
I managed to get from A to B despite all
00:32:12
the stresses in between because I
00:32:13
actually was listening trying to listen
00:32:15
to what my body was saying that I needed
00:32:18
to do you know yeah but I did run out of
00:32:20
KFC last time
00:32:25
yeah they did sponsor a bit about that
00:32:27
yeah and that's like not so guilty
00:32:29
pleasure I mean there's there's you can
00:32:31
eat whatever the hell you want and you
00:32:32
you're never going to have enough
00:32:34
calories on board and that's the thing
00:32:35
and I mean at the end of the running day
00:32:37
there's no way I want to sit down and
00:32:39
like stand up and cook like I just won't
00:32:41
have the energy you know like and yeah
00:32:44
so I mean
00:32:45
yeah also going back to what I said
00:32:47
before you need to be as selfish as
00:32:48
possible you can't be yeah so okay so so
00:32:51
every day is going to pretty much look
00:32:52
the same yeah so similar to the wake-up
00:32:54
time like 4am each day every time I mean
00:32:57
to wake up at 4am yeah it's a rule of
00:32:59
thumb every day wake up 4 AM 30k run
00:33:02
hour break back out for another run yeah
00:33:05
similar sort of distance similar sort of
00:33:08
distance and then and then okay so so
00:33:10
the first one each day will take you how
00:33:13
long
00:33:14
I'm estimating a lace like I'm allowing
00:33:17
myself an hour for each 10K but I
00:33:20
probably six minutes okay it'll probably
00:33:21
get even slower than that though won't
00:33:22
it well I don't even know if it'll even
00:33:25
get slower than that because I ran five
00:33:26
minute K's with bricks in the Prem and
00:33:28
it's pushing 30 kgs like okay it's not
00:33:31
for that amount of time but when I don't
00:33:33
take breaks in the Prem I run 10 15
00:33:35
minutes faster so yeah you're looking at
00:33:37
that I'm just estimating that worse case
00:33:41
scenario I'll be running six minute case
00:33:42
well like well I mean I might be running
00:33:45
for I mean it's got to get slower than
00:33:48
that as the days go yeah so well well
00:33:50
we'll see how it goes like I mean I'm
00:33:52
just gonna sort of take it as it goes
00:33:54
I'm not too much under pressure as long
00:33:56
as I get that just since covered each
00:33:58
day so my shortest day is the last day
00:34:01
which is 41k which I have to cover in
00:34:03
the first nine hours of the day but I
00:34:05
mean other than that my distances are
00:34:08
mainly between 100 and 100 and I think
00:34:11
my biggest days like 135k or something
00:34:14
that mainly they're just like between
00:34:16
120.
00:34:19
so many K's yeah they are such big dogs
00:34:22
that's why I've split it up where it was
00:34:24
like last time I ran straight like I'd
00:34:26
get up in the morning and I'd just ran
00:34:27
all day but I don't want to do that
00:34:29
because I feel that it's more manageable
00:34:31
and sensible if I'm actually taking a
00:34:35
break and actually refueling properly
00:34:37
and I'm actually going look I'm gonna go
00:34:39
from here to here and it's also like
00:34:41
mentally more able to prepare better for
00:34:44
it whereas like because it's in Free
00:34:46
Runs rather than just slogging along all
00:34:49
day and then just not being more
00:34:52
productive you know yeah I'm just
00:34:54
thinking out loud here and I've I've got
00:34:56
no doubt that you've put a lot of
00:34:57
thought into this and you've thought
00:34:58
about all sorts of different ways of
00:35:00
achieving this goal but did you think of
00:35:02
doing like one run
00:35:04
every eight hours what I mean is like so
00:35:07
say start at midnight get the Run done
00:35:09
have a break then go again at 8am then
00:35:12
when that's done have a break start
00:35:14
again at 4 P.M you know then midnight
00:35:16
whatever it happens to be every you know
00:35:18
what I mean so you get the Run done and
00:35:20
then whatever the break is between
00:35:21
finishing the run and the eight hour
00:35:22
mark That's rest time did you look at
00:35:24
doing something like that I had
00:35:25
contemplated it but then I sort of
00:35:27
thought about the support crew being up
00:35:28
at midnight and I just oh very selfish
00:35:31
yeah yeah listen you've got to be more
00:35:32
selfish no yes I like thought about the
00:35:34
whole thing and also like now that
00:35:37
there's a big support crew which is
00:35:39
great like I definitely want the support
00:35:41
especially with kids on board and staff
00:35:43
and we're not sleeping in the motorhome
00:35:46
like the motorhome is going to be set up
00:35:47
for the event and we've got sponsored
00:35:49
I've already sorted out sponsor
00:35:50
accommodation for the whole trip just
00:35:52
about so we're going to be getting out
00:35:54
of the motorhome so that we can all
00:35:56
shower and like you know like not just
00:35:58
be in the motorhome the whole time so I
00:36:01
thought of it like the whole side of it
00:36:03
and I just like I mean yeah so I'm
00:36:06
estimated to start at 4am I mean I don't
00:36:09
have to like if I wake up and I'd be
00:36:12
like we want to leave we yeah I don't
00:36:14
know I'm just going to take it as it
00:36:16
comes I guess but 4am is the latest I
00:36:19
want to start because if I start later
00:36:22
than that is that do you want to get
00:36:23
that one done so that you're finished in
00:36:25
time for breakfast and yeah yeah so I
00:36:28
sort of thought about it like that so
00:36:30
that would be finished for breakfast
00:36:31
have a break do another run have lunch
00:36:34
do another run and then have dinner like
00:36:37
and then get some
00:36:39
because I sort of thought that might be
00:36:41
the best approach yeah so run run number
00:36:43
three each day what sort of time are you
00:36:44
starting is that so like mid-afternoon
00:36:46
do you think um well so it'll depends so
00:36:48
if I do four to eight a.m and then I
00:36:50
have an hour break start at 9am again
00:36:52
that would be nine till one and then
00:36:54
start again at maybe like two then I'm
00:36:57
like in two to six or two to seven and
00:36:59
then yeah so it'll be late afternoon
00:37:02
right right and then we'll finish at a
00:37:04
reasonable time because in the next day
00:37:06
we've got to be up at four so you know
00:37:08
right because they're not a huge I mean
00:37:09
those one hour one hour break between
00:37:11
those big runs there's not a lot I I
00:37:13
mean it's a nice recovery time take your
00:37:15
shoes off or whatever freshen up but
00:37:17
it's not a great rest but then are you
00:37:19
hoping you just get like a massive sleep
00:37:20
each night wow yeah and a chance to like
00:37:23
have a proper shower and like recover
00:37:25
better that way whereas like if I have
00:37:27
those breaks during the day I'm going to
00:37:28
be all sweaty and gross anyways so like
00:37:30
you know it's probably more productive
00:37:32
today I'm not eating because you need
00:37:34
that you need that I feel like an hour
00:37:37
nap here and there is not going to help
00:37:39
but you need that actual like chunk of
00:37:42
sleep and refilling and stuff so I
00:37:44
figured that was just a better way to
00:37:46
approach it things might change on the
00:37:47
run but as I say like my and then yeah
00:37:50
if things might change we've got the
00:37:52
flexibility that we can start earlier
00:37:54
like as I said some of the days we're
00:37:56
actually staying because of where the
00:37:58
accommodation is and where the start
00:38:00
pointers we're actually staying like
00:38:03
gonna have to drive half an hour 40
00:38:05
minutes to get to where
00:38:07
we are so realistically we're only going
00:38:09
to be up at 3am anyway it's going to be
00:38:11
a whole day thing just about anyway yeah
00:38:13
you can't afford to have a bad day
00:38:15
though one bad day would would [ __ ] the
00:38:17
whole thing up right pretty much so
00:38:19
under the pump well yeah so we've got
00:38:22
like I am planned for it to take 18 days
00:38:26
nine hours to break City Bears record
00:38:28
but when I organized my original plan I
00:38:31
think we've just worked out that if I
00:38:33
make it their own time it's actually
00:38:34
going to be 17 days nine hours which is
00:38:37
not necessarily us under 17 days nine
00:38:40
hours which isn't necessarily a bad
00:38:42
thing because then that gives us an
00:38:43
extra day in case anything goes
00:38:45
everything really went wrong yeah and
00:38:47
then on top of that we've got an extra
00:38:49
two or three days
00:38:51
regarding the Guinness World Records so
00:38:53
if I don't break city builders record
00:38:55
it's not the end of the world but so so
00:38:57
you're saying if you don't break the
00:38:59
men's record you will still break the
00:39:00
women's reports yeah right right so the
00:39:03
main focus is to break the women's
00:39:04
record but I thought it would be a
00:39:06
lovely thing to try and do and what are
00:39:08
most memory so go and get the mail
00:39:10
record at the same time and make it more
00:39:12
of a challenge rather than it just be
00:39:13
what someone else has just gone and done
00:39:15
all right it will be a challenge I mean
00:39:17
either way this will be a challenge
00:39:18
there's a reason that this record was
00:39:20
set in 1975 and hasn't been broken since
00:39:22
yeah but if anyone can I reckon you can
00:39:25
Thanks for believing of me oh no worries
00:39:27
no worries I mean like you've done it
00:39:29
before you've run the length of the
00:39:30
country you did it in 34 days so you
00:39:33
know what to expect you're like you're
00:39:34
not going into the spline mentally I
00:39:36
know you're strong enough but what
00:39:36
happens if physically something goes
00:39:38
wrong like you you break a foot or
00:39:40
something I don't know hey will you
00:39:42
better like block the pain out and keep
00:39:43
on going or will you be sensible well
00:39:45
like what do you do well that's the
00:39:46
thing like some people would expect me
00:39:48
to stop because well I've got to think
00:39:50
of my long-term effects and I think that
00:39:52
if it was that bad I wouldn't be silly
00:39:54
enough to carry on as much as I want to
00:39:56
like the thing with the Guinness World
00:39:58
Records as well is your time starts from
00:40:00
when you start to when you finish and I
00:40:03
think there's only a certain amount of
00:40:04
time frame that you can take in between
00:40:06
that period
00:40:08
like if something goes wrong yeah so
00:40:11
you've you've had the luxury of um
00:40:13
having the women's record for running
00:40:14
the length of the country for like the
00:40:16
last 10 years yes and that was broken in
00:40:18
January this year by uh Emma Thomas who
00:40:20
who smashed your record right yeah so it
00:40:22
was 34 days and she took it down to 21
00:40:25
days
00:40:27
yeah yeah she's she's but she's um
00:40:30
phenomenal she did she did so well yeah
00:40:32
is it a competitive thing are you guys
00:40:35
okay has she given you any any sort of
00:40:38
like advice or tips or pointers or is it
00:40:40
something not like that
00:40:42
I I don't want to say the wrong thing
00:40:44
like I mean they approved us both in the
00:40:47
same year didn't tell us either of us
00:40:49
neither of us were probably aware
00:40:55
oh yeah that's a valid point yeah so she
00:40:58
started running in about a week into
00:41:01
around someone told me that she was
00:41:03
doing it and she was doing it for mental
00:41:05
health and at that point I was sort of
00:41:08
like
00:41:10
um I was like wow this is like cool that
00:41:13
she's doing it and I was all supportive
00:41:14
for what she was doing I knew she was
00:41:15
going to break my record but like I mean
00:41:17
I was all supportive for it and I knew
00:41:19
that I had my run coming up and that um
00:41:22
that I yeah I'll support him for what
00:41:25
she was doing I did feel a bit bad
00:41:27
because I was sort of like oh she's only
00:41:28
just going and breaking it and then I'm
00:41:30
gonna have to sit out so my like my
00:41:33
Approach I guess was positive like I
00:41:35
sent him messages and like was happy
00:41:36
that she did it you know like it was it
00:41:39
was hard as well like losing my record
00:41:41
that I'd had for 10 years but at the
00:41:43
same time I knew that I've got another
00:41:45
chance this year but I mean she did
00:41:47
amazing and I like I know she did
00:41:49
absolutely incredible and she set the
00:41:51
bar real high for me and I'm like I'm
00:41:54
proud of her she's done real well and
00:41:56
she's as I say she set the bar high for
00:41:58
me to go and try and break that record
00:42:01
but obviously because I've applied to
00:42:03
Guinness World Records been approved now
00:42:06
her record is the record I have to break
00:42:07
it just is what it is but she set the
00:42:09
bar High challenged me even more which
00:42:12
is awesome because as I say I'm doing it
00:42:13
for a good cause so I'm sitting here
00:42:16
from my position having never done
00:42:17
anything of any note in my life
00:42:19
um I think like record or not it's still
00:42:21
an amazing thing that you've it's
00:42:22
amazing thing that you did 10 years ago
00:42:24
it's amazing thing you're doing now it's
00:42:25
amazing things she did yeah you guys
00:42:27
should I feel you should be closer than
00:42:28
what you are like I mean yeah it's crazy
00:42:30
it's crazy what you've done and what
00:42:32
you're attempting to getting in it's
00:42:33
crazy what she's done and I wish it
00:42:35
could be that way because I mean like it
00:42:37
seems like it's frosty between you two
00:42:39
I'm picking up on a Vibe here yeah what
00:42:41
you've done already is remember and what
00:42:42
she's done remark like running running
00:42:43
over 100 K's a day for how many days 20
00:42:47
and 27.
00:42:50
you're both absolute weapons yeah
00:42:52
records aside I mean no one can ever
00:42:55
take away your personal achievements
00:42:56
exactly regardless of what's in the
00:42:58
record box all right um so if people
00:43:00
want to support you or follow you or get
00:43:03
them behind uh what can they do they can
00:43:05
go to the Run NZ for mental health page
00:43:08
on Facebook is that what it's called the
00:43:09
page yes it's just run NZ for mental
00:43:12
health okay and then there's the
00:43:14
Instagram watches NZ run winnie22 and
00:43:19
then there's a give a little page I
00:43:21
think of your search running Zed for
00:43:22
mental health it'll come up as well
00:43:24
what's the goal in terms of like as is
00:43:26
it mainly do you want to raise money or
00:43:28
is it mainly like awareness and
00:43:29
conversation starting what is it so I
00:43:32
guess my focus for it is that I want to
00:43:35
raise as much awareness as I can because
00:43:37
then people are more likely to donate
00:43:39
like it would be great if we raise
00:43:41
some good money for the course because I
00:43:43
feel like there needs to be more support
00:43:45
like more counseling more people out
00:43:48
there that can help people when they're
00:43:49
going through these tough times so the
00:43:52
donations definitely help as well we've
00:43:53
managed to get most of the events
00:43:55
sponsored so that majority of many like
00:43:58
goes straight towards the cause over two
00:44:00
grand has already been raised for the
00:44:02
cause specifically on the give a little
00:44:03
but yeah if anyone wants to donate even
00:44:06
just a few dollars every bit helps um
00:44:09
and yeah as I say the main thing that I
00:44:12
want to tell you is around raise
00:44:13
awareness for it so that hopefully when
00:44:15
people are going through tough times
00:44:17
that there's some support because I feel
00:44:19
like you know like when you're going for
00:44:22
a tough time like there needs to be more
00:44:24
counseling available for people and
00:44:25
stuff in New Zealand if you're not in a
00:44:27
position to give any money I would
00:44:28
suggest this it be kind always be kind
00:44:31
yeah be kind and um also um and this is
00:44:34
uh probably particularly to the guys
00:44:35
because I think guys really struggle
00:44:36
with this you know be more be more open
00:44:38
and honest and vulnerable with your
00:44:40
friends and then they'll be more open
00:44:41
and honest and vulnerable back to you
00:44:43
yeah and check in with people absolutely
00:44:45
absolutely and if your friend says yeah
00:44:47
no I'm all good ask them again no how
00:44:49
are you today really and they may be
00:44:52
reluctant to tell you but if you tell
00:44:53
them some [ __ ] that you've got going on
00:44:54
in your life first then they'll know
00:44:56
that it's a safe space and they can
00:44:57
share more with you I don't know there's
00:44:59
no one size fix all and no one no one
00:45:01
knows all the answers but um it's good
00:45:02
that you're getting out there and doing
00:45:04
this doing this for yourself and for a
00:45:05
great course and for the challenge I
00:45:07
feel like yeah it's getting a heap of
00:45:10
awareness for the cause hopefully and
00:45:12
that's the main thing I feel like even
00:45:13
if there was a counselor on every
00:45:14
[ __ ] Corner that was available for
00:45:16
free there's still a lot of guys in New
00:45:18
Zealand that would rather just bundle it
00:45:20
up and think oh oh I'm just going to
00:45:23
take my own life that's a better option
00:45:25
than talking to someone about it yeah
00:45:27
that's the hard thing about it
00:45:31
and then the trades as well because like
00:45:33
I was even talking to the guy at
00:45:35
placemakers and there's a number of
00:45:37
tradies that take their life a year as
00:45:39
well I I had um a farmer on a guy called
00:45:42
um came Briscoe he's just recently wrote
00:45:44
a book he runs something called Farm fit
00:45:46
he told me that um tradies have now
00:45:48
passed the farmers as um as the you know
00:45:51
the worst occupational mental health in
00:45:53
the country yeah well
00:45:55
wow so I delayed that all right Victoria
00:45:58
Taylor thank you very much for your time
00:45:59
and best of luck for what you're
00:46:01
undertaking
00:46:02
um I'm I'm I'm so eager to follow your
00:46:04
progress who knows if it's possible or
00:46:06
not I guess we'll find out but um oh
00:46:08
well even I'll find out because I'm
00:46:10
putting myself out there like I'm
00:46:11
putting myself in a position where like
00:46:13
I'm not saying I'm not gonna achieve it
00:46:15
but I'm taking a risk I I applaud you
00:46:19
for giving it a go and that that's the
00:46:21
thing I think the more terrifying a goal
00:46:23
is and the more chance there is a
00:46:25
failure the more worthwhile it is yeah
00:46:26
and good on you for doing it hey lovely
00:46:28
to meet you Andrew X say hi Brett say hi
00:46:32
you were talking to the microphone look
00:46:34
talking to the microphone say hello so
00:46:37
mummy's gonna run New Zealand run faster
00:46:39
say it Brian Master he is now I'm gonna
00:46:43
um turn my podcast equipment off and go
00:46:45
into the lounge and inspect the damage
00:46:47
is it going to look like a tornado's
00:46:49
been through there what are you oh God
00:46:50
all right hey thanks guys
00:46:53
bye
00:46:55
bye okay thanks for making it all the
00:46:57
way through this episode of Runners only
00:46:58
with dom Harvey really hope you enjoyed
00:47:00
it at the risk of sounding like a
00:47:02
scratchy record
00:47:03
um a couple of I don't know admin
00:47:05
housekeeping things as I do at the end
00:47:07
of all these things if you do like it
00:47:08
and you can think of someone that might
00:47:11
like it as well please let them know
00:47:13
word of mouth is the most powerful form
00:47:14
of marketing another really effective
00:47:16
way is um sharing it on your social
00:47:17
media channels that's really helpful as
00:47:19
well also wherever you get your podcast
00:47:21
from Spotify Apple whatever please give
00:47:23
it a rating if you like it or even a
00:47:25
review one other thing if you're in
00:47:27
business and you want to advertise this
00:47:28
podcast is growing at rates bigger than
00:47:30
what I ever anticipated considering
00:47:32
we're only like five or six months into
00:47:33
the journey we're currently averaging
00:47:35
about 15 000 downloads a week or sixty
00:47:37
thousand a month and I'm looking for
00:47:39
sponsors and advertisers to jump on
00:47:41
board if that sounds like you or your
00:47:43
business let's get talking you can email
00:47:45
me at domharveynz gmail.com I'm not
00:47:48
gonna lie a lot of work goes into this
00:47:50
probably more work than what I
00:47:51
anticipated like the amount of hours
00:47:53
that have gone on to it so far this year
00:47:55
would me well below minimum wage in
00:47:58
terms of the money I've made back it's I
00:48:00
mean it's not about that but ultimately
00:48:02
if I can make enough money off this I
00:48:03
can reinvest get the camera quality
00:48:05
better get some stuff on YouTube and
00:48:08
hopefully make this a job I'm really
00:48:09
passionate about what I'm doing and
00:48:11
these conversations I'm having with
00:48:12
amazing new zealanders so I really
00:48:14
really want to make this work so if you
00:48:16
can help in any way if you're a business
00:48:18
owner or you can think of a business
00:48:20
that could benefit by being on this
00:48:21
podcast please let's get talking
00:48:24
domharveynz gmail.com or message me on
00:48:27
Instagram domharvey NZ alright thanks
00:48:29
very much hope to see you next week
